- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, what's up? What's up?
- 0:01Speaker 2: Everybody? Welcome back to film study presented by coach. I'm
- 0:04Speaker 2: Rene Montgomery. I played eleven years in the WNBA. I've
- 0:07Speaker 2: been an All Star, I was six Woman.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Of the Year.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I've pretty much had every role that you could possibly
- 0:12Speaker 2: have on a team. So I'm excited to chop it
- 0:14Speaker 2: up with Hailey van Lyth Collegiate standout Louisville LSU TCU.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Welcome Hailey, And by the way, which school do you
- 0:23Speaker 2: wreck the most?
- 0:23Speaker 3: Like?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Which one should I lead with? As as your school?
- 0:28Speaker 3: Well, nice to see you, and I thank you for
- 0:31Speaker 3: having me. But you know it's a conflict because I
- 0:35Speaker 3: spent the longest at Louisville, I have a degree, I'm alumni.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Obviously TCU is my last school, so there's an attachment there.
- 0:42Speaker 3: So I'm gonna rock with TCU right now. But you
- 0:45Speaker 3: know it's it's definitely it's up for debate.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Okay, So I'm went TCU stand out.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Now number eleven pick in the WNBA draft plan for
- 0:55Speaker 2: the Chicago Sky But talk to me about that though,
- 0:58Speaker 2: because what I've noticed, and I played on different teams,
- 1:01Speaker 2: whether that was even in the States or overseas. I
- 1:04Speaker 2: picked up a little something from everywhere I went, So
- 1:07Speaker 2: I kind of want to go through each stop and
- 1:10Speaker 2: you tell me, like what you picked up from there, Like,
- 1:12Speaker 2: so let's start with Louisville, Like what did you pick
- 1:15Speaker 2: up and learn at Louisville.
- 1:17Speaker 3: You know, Louisville was the beginning of my college career,
- 1:20Speaker 3: so there was a lot of maturing going on, you know,
- 1:23Speaker 3: just growing as a young woman in general. But I
- 1:26Speaker 3: think mostly being comfortable in the college game. I think
- 1:31Speaker 3: I learned the pace, what's expected, how you need to play,
- 1:36Speaker 3: how to be successful. I kind of got the baseline of.
- 1:38Speaker 4: That at Louisville.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Moving into LSU, I think LSU was huge for me
- 1:43Speaker 3: on the mental side of the game and how to
- 1:46Speaker 3: be able to show up as my best self from
- 1:48Speaker 3: a mental standpoint, because you know, when you as you
- 1:52Speaker 3: go up higher in levels, I kind of learned that
- 1:54Speaker 3: the separation really comes from who is mentally tougher, always
- 2:00Speaker 3: about skill set when everybody's really good. So LSU was
- 2:03Speaker 3: a huge year for me from the mental standpoint of
- 2:06Speaker 3: getting better. And then TCU was special because I kind
- 2:09Speaker 3: of got to put it all together. I got a
- 2:12Speaker 3: chance to put together the physical aspect of the game
- 2:15Speaker 3: with the mental aspect of the game and kind of
- 2:18Speaker 3: just see what I could do in that year with
- 2:21Speaker 3: Coach Mark, and it was. It was definitely memorable and
- 2:26Speaker 3: I really enjoyed it.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I love that.
- 2:28Speaker 2: So now you got your bag, You're heading into the
- 2:30Speaker 2: WNBA with this guy, and I'm gonna just be honest,
- 2:33Speaker 2: Like when I went from Yukon to the pros, one
- 2:36Speaker 2: of the hardest things for me to adjust with was
- 2:38Speaker 2: the fact that, like, you lose games more often. You know,
- 2:41Speaker 2: in college, when you're on a good team, you don't
- 2:43Speaker 2: lose game. You lose a couple games a month maybe,
- 2:46Speaker 2: and then you get to the WNBA you might lose
- 2:49Speaker 2: three games in one week.
- 2:51Speaker 1: It's just if you're if you're having one of those weeks.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And so just talk through, like how has you evolved
- 2:58Speaker 2: from now? You you got all of the skill sets,
- 3:00Speaker 2: you learned all these things in college, and now you're
- 3:03Speaker 2: in the WBA where your seasons are gonna be always
- 3:06Speaker 2: a roller coaster. How are you putting all that together
- 3:08Speaker 2: now in your rookie season.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, obviously it's been a journey of trying
- 3:15Speaker 3: to learn every day. I think It's the biggest thing
- 3:16Speaker 3: for me is just being open to learning every single
- 3:20Speaker 3: day and taking every day as what it is and
- 3:23Speaker 3: then trying to be better the next day. Like you
- 3:25Speaker 3: can't get too ahead of yourself anytime I do, I
- 3:29Speaker 3: learn my lesson real fast, So taking it one day
- 3:32Speaker 3: at a time. But also I've never came off the
- 3:35Speaker 3: bench in my career, and so learning how to change
- 3:39Speaker 3: my mindset to be able to do that and still
- 3:42Speaker 3: be myself and still impact the team and help the
- 3:45Speaker 3: team win, and like the different ways that I can
- 3:47Speaker 3: contribute to culture and winning habits that don't necessarily mean
- 3:52Speaker 3: that I'm always on the floor.
- 3:53Speaker 4: So it's still going on.
- 3:55Speaker 3: I'm still going through the process, but so far, I
- 3:59Speaker 3: think the losing part is definitely shocking. Yes, one hund shocking,
- 4:05Speaker 3: But you know, every vet that I have has told me,
- 4:09Speaker 3: like you know, your rookie year, it always like is
- 4:13Speaker 3: is a big hit, But then you kind of learn
- 4:15Speaker 3: that's just how the game is at the soul.
- 4:17Speaker 1: To your point, there is a way to have impact.
- 4:20Speaker 2: For me, what I looked at when I was on
- 4:22Speaker 2: the bench is all the all the ways the games
- 4:25Speaker 2: are flowing. Because each game, as I'm sure you're seeing
- 4:27Speaker 2: there's something different every game, whether you come in and
- 4:31Speaker 2: they might need you to score because y'all are in
- 4:32Speaker 2: a scoring drought, or you come in and you got
- 4:34Speaker 2: to raise the defensive intensity take care of the ball.
- 4:37Speaker 2: But are you noticing that now that like you come
- 4:39Speaker 2: into the game almost with an idea or a plan
- 4:42Speaker 2: of attack.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Yeah, one hundred percent, Especially the last couple of weeks,
- 4:48Speaker 3: I really felt that as I get to watch the
- 4:52Speaker 3: beginning of the game, especially being a point guard and
- 4:54Speaker 3: being a lot of ball screens, seeing how teams are
- 4:57Speaker 3: covering our ball screens with certain personnel, whoever the big
- 5:01Speaker 3: is in the ball screen, if it's different depending on
- 5:03Speaker 3: the big or the guard, it helps me be more
- 5:05Speaker 3: prepared and any type of preparation I can get this year,
- 5:11Speaker 3: like I've been hungry for it, so definitely. I think
- 5:16Speaker 3: at the beginning, I took it for granted and I
- 5:19Speaker 3: didn't quite realize the opportunity I had to like study
- 5:22Speaker 3: the game along the bench. But lately I've definitely definitely
- 5:27Speaker 3: have been watching and trying to learn so that when
- 5:29Speaker 3: I go in, I already have a game plan of
- 5:33Speaker 3: what I'm about.
- 5:33Speaker 1: To see exactly. It's a cheat code. I'm not even
- 5:36Speaker 1: gonna lie.
- 5:36Speaker 2: It's a little cheatode where you get to you almost
- 5:38Speaker 2: get to see the other team's game plan. Like you
- 5:40Speaker 2: said before, you actually play against the game plan. When
- 5:43Speaker 2: you're a starter, you don't like I wouldn't know if
- 5:45Speaker 2: they were trapping me because they don't want me to shoot.
- 5:47Speaker 2: I don't know if they're like what they're going to hardhedge.
- 5:49Speaker 2: But if I saw them and how they was guarding
- 5:52Speaker 2: the starting point guard, they might switch it up. But
- 5:54Speaker 2: usually teams have tendencies. So you talked about your being
- 5:58Speaker 2: a rookie. Do you have a Welcome to the to
- 6:00Speaker 2: the w moment yet? It's only early halfway through there?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Do you do you have one yet? You know I
- 6:08Speaker 2: don't have one. I think I have a bunch of
- 6:10Speaker 2: tiny moments where I'm like, oh, but like not a
- 6:13Speaker 2: huge one yet. So I think that one is waiting
- 6:15Speaker 2: for me. It's still it's still waiting on me. And
- 6:19Speaker 2: when I'm when it happens, i'll know it. You'll know
- 6:21Speaker 2: it when it happens, all right, So let's just get
- 6:23Speaker 2: into some of your places called film studies. So let's
- 6:26Speaker 2: look at some film so as we can see off
- 6:30Speaker 2: the ball in the corner. You got your teammate going
- 6:33Speaker 2: off the double. Now Angel rolls a little bit slow,
- 6:36Speaker 2: so I know you can kind of see that way
- 6:38Speaker 2: to kind of move with her, Cause if you came
- 6:40Speaker 2: up right away, obviously y'all would have been sitting in
- 6:43Speaker 2: the same place as you can see, So way to
- 6:45Speaker 2: come up at the same time. Wait on the timing
- 6:47Speaker 2: of her boom, great pass. Now most people might assume
- 6:51Speaker 2: she was gonna shoot it. Even hold on, let's wait
- 6:52Speaker 2: a minute. Look at the coaches. The coaches even thought.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Look at the coaches, they're like, hey, they thought it
- 6:57Speaker 2: was going up, but way to stay ready. She doesn't
- 7:00Speaker 2: shoot it, knocks it down. Is that a play that
- 7:03Speaker 2: y'all work on? Is that a comfortable like you an
- 7:05Speaker 2: Angel connection?
- 7:08Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 7:08Speaker 3: I mean I think I know Angel's game pretty well now,
- 7:12Speaker 3: so I know whenever I give it to her, she's
- 7:14Speaker 3: a very willing passer, and especially with me, she always
- 7:18Speaker 3: is yelling at me to knock threes down. So whenever
- 7:22Speaker 3: she has the ball and I'm in the vicinity, I'm
- 7:23Speaker 3: one hundred percent moving my feet to try and get
- 7:27Speaker 3: a window to be open, because I know that she's
- 7:29Speaker 3: looking for me, and I think that getting stealing shots
- 7:34Speaker 3: like that where I can just get my feet set
- 7:36Speaker 3: and catch and shoot, has been huge for me.
- 7:39Speaker 4: To not pass up at this level.
- 7:42Speaker 3: And I think I guess the question I would have
- 7:45Speaker 3: for you is like, how did you try to simplify
- 7:49Speaker 3: your game as you got to the pros so that
- 7:52Speaker 3: not everything was so hard all the time.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a great question.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I really think the game slows down the more you
- 7:59Speaker 2: can anticipate this.
- 8:00Speaker 1: So even let's take this play right here, right like.
- 8:03Speaker 2: You know Angel and you know what she does, her tendencies.
- 8:07Speaker 2: That's the beauty of playing with somebody you Even here's
- 8:10Speaker 2: another thing. You see how like you're not in the frame,
- 8:12Speaker 2: your defender is completely turned around. Another thing to do
- 8:16Speaker 2: is to move so that they don't know where you
- 8:18Speaker 2: are when they turn around. So you could even slide
- 8:21Speaker 2: a little bit over so that Angel can see you,
- 8:23Speaker 2: and your defender's automatically gonna run back to where you
- 8:25Speaker 2: are there, so you're kind of where she expected.
- 8:27Speaker 1: You to be.
- 8:28Speaker 2: You could probably be a little more wide open if
- 8:30Speaker 2: you moved over to the slot a little bit more.
- 8:33Speaker 2: But I think the main thing is anticipating your teammates like,
- 8:37Speaker 2: I'm I was a small guard, so I need to
- 8:40Speaker 2: get clean looks.
- 8:41Speaker 1: It'll help the percentage out.
- 8:42Speaker 2: So the more you can anticipate what your teammates is
- 8:45Speaker 2: gonna do, and when you see your defender turn their head,
- 8:48Speaker 2: you got them. As soon as your defender looks like this,
- 8:51Speaker 2: she must have forgot you as a shooter, baby, because
- 8:53Speaker 2: as soon as she gets that, you should have known
- 8:55Speaker 2: it's night night right there instantly.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And you playing with Angel, what'd.
- 9:00Speaker 2: You say it's her most slept on skill set, Cause
- 9:02Speaker 2: you know there's a lot of things that she does
- 9:04Speaker 2: well rebounding, but what would you say is her slept
- 9:06Speaker 2: on skill set?
- 9:07Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 9:08Speaker 3: I mean, I think her ability to play, you know,
- 9:11Speaker 3: out of the high post or out of the dunker
- 9:14Speaker 3: spot and facilitate as well as score has been huge
- 9:18Speaker 3: for our offense. And you know, we run a lot
- 9:21Speaker 3: of stuff through her because of that. So I think
- 9:24Speaker 3: typically you don't necessarily think as uh think of biggs
- 9:27Speaker 3: as playmakers are reader like people that make reads. And
- 9:30Speaker 3: I think that Angel is really good at at making reads,
- 9:33Speaker 3: like whether it's to shoot, to pass, to just get
- 9:36Speaker 3: the ball moving. And I think I think that she
- 9:38Speaker 3: definitely excels at that.
- 9:40Speaker 2: So use that you know, Like, so now you know
- 9:43Speaker 2: when you're in the game. Cause one of the main
- 9:45Speaker 2: things that helped me is each person I played with,
- 9:49Speaker 2: I knew exactly.
- 9:50Speaker 1: What their specialty was.
- 9:52Speaker 2: So that when you're playing with Angel, now you know
- 9:53Speaker 2: she's a playmaker. So that means that you need to
- 9:55Speaker 2: be slide and slide and slide, and like every time
- 9:58Speaker 2: she gets the ball, you're definitely not a suite. Mean,
- 10:00Speaker 2: she's gonna shoot it, even though you saw all the
- 10:02Speaker 2: coaches assuming she was gonna shoot it.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Like, but you need to know, oh, she probably not
- 10:07Speaker 1: gonna shoot this.
- 10:08Speaker 2: And so that's that's a good note for you. All Right,
- 10:10Speaker 2: we're gonna go into the second play. The second play here,
- 10:13Speaker 2: little catch and shoot play, little catch and shoot action.
- 10:16Speaker 4: I'm all right, the three is going on.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Yeah, come on now, listen.
- 10:21Speaker 2: I love I think the three is a game changer.
- 10:25Speaker 2: So it's a skill set. If you haven't you're a
- 10:26Speaker 2: spacer on the court, you can you know, you can
- 10:29Speaker 2: change the game and situationals. All by the way, stay
- 10:32Speaker 2: ready on the bench because situationals when they need a three,
- 10:36Speaker 2: that's that's when you can really have impact, all right,
- 10:38Speaker 2: So let's check this one out here. You're off the
- 10:41Speaker 2: ball now, Kea Nurse gets a shot up. Great easy.
- 10:45Speaker 2: I played with Elizabeth Williams, one of the best rebounders
- 10:48Speaker 2: in the game. Look at you, So first of all,
- 10:49Speaker 2: let's let's already look at you again.
- 10:52Speaker 1: We done caught your defender. What are you doing? We didn't?
- 10:56Speaker 1: We caught her again? Look at you.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I can see that you see her. What are your
- 11:00Speaker 2: thoughts right here? I'm gonna even just pose it, like,
- 11:02Speaker 2: what are your thoughts right here? Because I can see
- 11:04Speaker 2: you seeing this.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Again, he's another big who I know is an extremely
- 11:09Speaker 3: william passer, and if she sees two people in front
- 11:13Speaker 3: of her, she's gonna look to find the open man.
- 11:16Speaker 3: And so I was just trying to get into a
- 11:18Speaker 3: space where she could see me because I knew that
- 11:20Speaker 3: my man had doubled crack down on her. So I
- 11:25Speaker 3: knew if she just saw me, she would give it
- 11:27Speaker 3: to me.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Facts. I play with Easy too, and this is facts.
- 11:30Speaker 2: There's three defenders in there with her. There's multiple options,
- 11:34Speaker 2: but you got one of your teammates crashing, so that's
- 11:36Speaker 2: not an option.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Love, how you keep moving?
- 11:39Speaker 2: So look you're here, but great because your defender comes
- 11:43Speaker 2: down low.
- 11:43Speaker 1: So you keep it playing, You keep moving.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Your defender's late, bah, take it, take it. So this
- 11:50Speaker 2: is so these are the kind of plays that within
- 11:53Speaker 2: the flow. I'm gonna rewind it again because this is
- 11:55Speaker 2: within the flow of Office. This is off of an
- 11:56Speaker 2: offensive rebound. And you know they say there's no better
- 11:58Speaker 2: shot off of offs rebound.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Then what a dagger? Three yep?
- 12:03Speaker 2: And then you provided the dagger. So Kia Nursey comes
- 12:06Speaker 2: off of the screen, the down screen. Great Office, You're
- 12:09Speaker 2: already even before she shoots it. Though, look at you
- 12:12Speaker 2: already before she shoots it. You're still active, like you're active.
- 12:16Speaker 2: You think about going in for the rebound, You're like, nah,
- 12:18Speaker 2: easy got it, easy, got it.
- 12:24Speaker 1: But this is your role, so here, easy gets it?
- 12:26Speaker 1: You keep it moving. What is after a play like this?
- 12:29Speaker 1: What does that do for you? After a play like this?
- 12:33Speaker 3: I think it really just when you whenever you see
- 12:35Speaker 3: the ball go through the net, it just is like
- 12:38Speaker 3: you get into a flow, a rhythm, whether you have
- 12:41Speaker 3: been in, whether I've been in for a while or
- 12:43Speaker 3: I just checked in. As soon as I see the
- 12:45Speaker 3: ball go through the net, like especially this year with me,
- 12:48Speaker 3: you know, rookie. It just helps me calm down and
- 12:51Speaker 3: relax and I stop moving so fast and the game
- 12:54Speaker 3: slows down and I can just take a deep breath
- 12:56Speaker 3: for a second.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that's fat. That's the question. How aggressive?
- 13:02Speaker 2: Like when you come into the game, are you sometimes
- 13:05Speaker 2: like all right, I want to just play it safe
- 13:07Speaker 2: so that I don't make mistakes. Or when you come
- 13:10Speaker 2: into the game, where you thinking all right, I want
- 13:11Speaker 2: to be aggressive? Like what are your thoughts when you
- 13:13Speaker 2: come into the game.
- 13:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I think when I first started, I was coming
- 13:19Speaker 3: in just trying not to make a mistake and not
- 13:23Speaker 3: be a reason that the other team went on a run.
- 13:27Speaker 3: And then I kind of learned that having that aspect,
- 13:31Speaker 3: one I was still making mistakes, and two it wasn't
- 13:34Speaker 3: helping me, you know, help the team at all or
- 13:37Speaker 3: earn myself more time on the court. And so I
- 13:41Speaker 3: kind of had to learn that you have to be
- 13:43Speaker 3: willing to take the risk to be aggressive to make
- 13:46Speaker 3: an impact because people are too good. You can't just
- 13:49Speaker 3: blend in and think that you're going to get to
- 13:51Speaker 3: stay out there. So I'm getting better at it. I'm
- 13:54Speaker 3: learning the balance between how to be aggressive, Like what
- 13:57Speaker 3: that looks like as a point guard for our team
- 14:00Speaker 3: doesn't necessarily mean me trying to get a bunch of
- 14:02Speaker 3: shots up. It just means, I mean, really just trying
- 14:04Speaker 3: to get in the paint and create some type of
- 14:08Speaker 3: movement or.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Flow for for our team. I think.
- 14:11Speaker 3: So it's it's changing. My mindset is changing every day.
- 14:16Speaker 3: But I'm I'm glad that I have surpassed like the
- 14:19Speaker 3: the passive.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Version of myself at this point.
- 14:22Speaker 2: No, that is amazing, and that is probably the hardest thing, like,
- 14:26Speaker 2: because you should be aggressive coming in. But aggressive might
- 14:29Speaker 2: mean you hit 'em with a shot, fake drive, drop
- 14:32Speaker 2: it to angel, get hurt, easy bucket. Aggressive might mean
- 14:35Speaker 2: you locked up shot clock violation, you didn't even get
- 14:38Speaker 2: a still in the stat sheet, but you know you
- 14:40Speaker 2: did that. And so that is a fine line of
- 14:42Speaker 2: finding like, alright, how aggressive can I be? It definitely
- 14:46Speaker 2: doesn't mean shooting, but that that is gonna be the
- 14:49Speaker 2: the the fine line that every player unless you're like
- 14:52Speaker 2: the top of the scouting report where you know it's
- 14:54Speaker 2: like straight up green lights, that's f that's for every player.
- 14:57Speaker 2: So once you get to figure out that and you
- 15:00Speaker 2: really lock in on your role, which I see the
- 15:02Speaker 2: coach has you in a lot of catch and shoots,
- 15:04Speaker 2: which is great for you though, because if they're putting
- 15:06Speaker 2: you in that role, then they trust you to knock
- 15:08Speaker 2: it in.
- 15:08Speaker 1: You said, angels telling you to shoot it. Your coaches
- 15:11Speaker 1: are putting you in that, so will you get it?
- 15:13Speaker 1: You gotta knock it in.
- 15:14Speaker 2: You gotta knock it in or at least take it,
- 15:15Speaker 2: because sometimes not taking it throws the offense off as well.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Yes it does.
- 15:20Speaker 2: All right, let's go to play number three. All right,
- 15:24Speaker 2: you're at the top of the key. We get it
- 15:25Speaker 2: to easy down low. I can see you're checking it out,
- 15:28Speaker 2: checking the scene, all right, So this is great because
- 15:32Speaker 2: right now it's looking like this play could be going
- 15:35Speaker 2: nowhere fast. Do you remember this play, by the way, yes,
- 15:38Speaker 2: I do.
- 15:39Speaker 1: You know? You know what happens? Okay, happen all right? Cool?
- 15:43Speaker 2: Because what happens here, what I love is the timing
- 15:47Speaker 2: of it. All if you would have let me play it,
- 15:50Speaker 2: because we know the secret that they don't know watching it,
- 15:52Speaker 2: so let me play the clips so that they can
- 15:54Speaker 2: see what we know. But if you would have went
- 15:57Speaker 2: too soon, this would have never worked. But your timing
- 16:01Speaker 2: is great. First of all, did you notice you have
- 16:04Speaker 2: a big on you here? What were your thoughts when
- 16:06Speaker 2: you see there's a miss. There's a cross matchup with
- 16:08Speaker 2: Sonya and Alia right now?
- 16:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I was trying to I again, he
- 16:16Speaker 3: was looking to pass she she realized it wasn't the
- 16:19Speaker 3: look she wanted, and so I was trying to get open.
- 16:20Speaker 3: But Ali was almost playing aggressive to defend me off
- 16:23Speaker 3: the ball. And what And as I've developed my game,
- 16:28Speaker 3: I've learned that if I can just I don't even
- 16:31Speaker 3: have to have the ball to use my quickness. It's
- 16:33Speaker 3: honestly better for you for me to use it off
- 16:35Speaker 3: the ball. And so I was trying to set her
- 16:38Speaker 3: up to get a cut cause I wanted to get
- 16:40Speaker 3: a look at the rim. I hadn't made a ton
- 16:41Speaker 3: of shots this game.
- 16:42Speaker 2: So so Gotti Gotti right here. I mean, beautiful timing.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Even let me even just rewind it to where like Sonya,
- 16:54Speaker 2: Like I'm watching Sonya too. You see Camilla kind of
- 16:57Speaker 2: dive in. It brings Sonya in with it too. So
- 17:00Speaker 2: Camilla took gravity with you, y'all cut at the same time.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I don't even think this was playing. It was just
- 17:05Speaker 2: a beautiful, a beautiful sequence, wide open. This is the
- 17:10Speaker 2: perfect way to get yourself going. Yeah, and then after
- 17:13Speaker 2: plays like that, so now you're thinking, after plays like that,
- 17:17Speaker 2: I got myself a cut.
- 17:18Speaker 1: What are your thoughts then? Like, are you like? What?
- 17:20Speaker 2: What are your thoughts after this is even? I mean,
- 17:22Speaker 2: this is a big bucket right here too. That makes
- 17:24Speaker 2: the score. I'm assuming it's about to be fifty two
- 17:26Speaker 2: fifty six. We're in the third m What are your
- 17:28Speaker 2: thoughts in these moments?
- 17:30Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 17:30Speaker 3: I mean again, it helps me slow the game down
- 17:33Speaker 3: and recognize and like you said, I had the mismatch
- 17:37Speaker 3: with Aliyah, and I think that slowing down to recognize
- 17:41Speaker 3: those mismatches, whether they're with me or they're with one
- 17:44Speaker 3: of my teammates, and how to get myself in the
- 17:47Speaker 3: best position to take advantage of it has been something
- 17:51Speaker 3: that I've gotten a lot better at over the course
- 17:55Speaker 3: of the last few games. And whether that's I boomerang
- 17:59Speaker 3: it so that I can get it off the catch.
- 18:02Speaker 3: If it kicked it out to me and I couldn't
- 18:04Speaker 3: get Alia right on the on the rip, I would
- 18:07Speaker 3: boom rang it and try to get it back so
- 18:09Speaker 3: that I could get around the next rip instead of
- 18:10Speaker 3: dribbling so much. Yeah, So like learning little things like
- 18:14Speaker 3: that and being able to see it play out in
- 18:18Speaker 3: real time has definitely built my confidence.
- 18:20Speaker 2: No, that's a great point too, because I think that
- 18:24Speaker 2: is the jump too from college to pro. In college,
- 18:27Speaker 2: you can almost dribble yourself into any shot you want, like, yeah,
- 18:30Speaker 2: because that's just how college is. But in the pros
- 18:32Speaker 2: it's more of a cut yourself pick and roll.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Off the pick and roll. It's a different form.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Like you said, your quickness still applies, but you were
- 18:41Speaker 2: just using it in different places.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I like that. I like that. All right, Let's go
- 18:45Speaker 1: to this next play play number four.
- 18:48Speaker 2: All right, so I love this already. People may not
- 18:52Speaker 2: notice what just happened, but for me, this is a
- 18:54Speaker 2: great detail. Look at where you catch it and then
- 18:57Speaker 2: look at where you dribble it down to boom. What
- 19:00Speaker 2: do you think that just did to the whole offense?
- 19:04Speaker 3: It It helped me set up the screen, so I
- 19:06Speaker 3: was gonna I'm gonna be able to get her off
- 19:08Speaker 3: uh of each screen right here because she was jumping
- 19:12Speaker 3: in a little bit.
- 19:12Speaker 4: I didn't like the spacing.
- 19:15Speaker 3: So when I when I set it up, I I
- 19:17Speaker 3: was trying to get a little bit better spacing and
- 19:19Speaker 3: help you out so that she could set a good.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Screen for me.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Yeah. Look, literally, look.
- 19:24Speaker 2: At Look at the three defenders in this gaggle right here,
- 19:27Speaker 2: Easy's defender, you're a defender, and Rebecca Allen's defender. Watch everybody,
- 19:33Speaker 2: when you take this dribble, watch what they do.
- 19:37Speaker 4: Yeah, everybody steps over.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Look at that. Just that one dribble change the whole
- 19:42Speaker 1: entire play.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Because now, like you said, Easy's one of the best
- 19:46Speaker 2: screeners in the league.
- 19:47Speaker 1: I p like I said, I played with her.
- 19:48Speaker 2: I know either i'm'a get open, she gonna get open,
- 19:51Speaker 2: or somebody's gonna get open. So you get her down.
- 19:54Speaker 2: And now you come off of the screen. Great shoulder
- 19:57Speaker 2: to shoulder boom.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Now what are you seeing? What are you looking at?
- 20:01Speaker 1: What are your thoughts here?
- 20:04Speaker 3: When I immediately come off the screen, I always look
- 20:06Speaker 3: at the post defender's feet, where they're facing, how close
- 20:11Speaker 3: they are to me. But immediately when I looked at that,
- 20:16Speaker 3: I saw fee too. I there was two people in
- 20:19Speaker 3: front of me, so and it wasn't my defender. So
- 20:22Speaker 3: I knew that someone was wide open because I had
- 20:25Speaker 3: two people staring at me, and both of them are
- 20:28Speaker 3: really good defenders, so I was really about to get
- 20:30Speaker 3: off this ball. But yeah, that's I always look at
- 20:34Speaker 3: the the post defender's feet, and Fee gave me a
- 20:37Speaker 3: pretty easy read. She sucked in pretty hard, So yeah
- 20:40Speaker 3: it wa It was an easy read.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Easy read.
- 20:43Speaker 2: But I the reason I'm not gonna just let this
- 20:45Speaker 2: easy read go. There's a reason this read was so
- 20:48Speaker 2: easy this first part. Look at Fee, We looked at
- 20:53Speaker 2: the other three defenders. Look at what Fee did when
- 20:55Speaker 2: you did that. Uh, she thought she was about to
- 20:59Speaker 2: have to go help so instantly. Now you've changed the
- 21:02Speaker 2: whole entire play off of just one one move coming
- 21:07Speaker 2: down low, everything's easy money after that, this is just
- 21:10Speaker 2: textbook one on one.
- 21:11Speaker 1: You come off.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Now everybody's at your wheel because everybody's helping, everybody's recovering.
- 21:17Speaker 2: You got Rachel telling you, like baby, Rachel.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Let you miss it. But again, don't don't forget the
- 21:27Speaker 1: little details. You know.
- 21:28Speaker 2: I'm wondering, are there any other things that you've noticed
- 21:31Speaker 2: that like, oh, if I just do just this little thing,
- 21:34Speaker 2: I've noticed that I have more success in the game,
- 21:36Speaker 2: Like just simple things like this. Have you noticed any
- 21:39Speaker 2: other little things that you've noticed that may be small
- 21:42Speaker 2: but have large impacts.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I think another Another one that I've learned has
- 21:48Speaker 3: helped me a lot is to open up the pocket
- 21:50Speaker 3: pass for my bigs. I'm a downhill player off of
- 21:54Speaker 3: a ball screen, so I like to come off tight.
- 21:57Speaker 3: But in this league, I've kind of had to learn
- 21:59Speaker 3: I need get as much space from my post defender
- 22:03Speaker 3: or my player as possible, So still coming off the
- 22:07Speaker 3: screen tight, but taking a little bit wider angles so
- 22:10Speaker 3: it opens up space to where Alana would have to
- 22:13Speaker 3: make a read to either guard the pocket or take me,
- 22:17Speaker 3: and then the read is easy. I'm dumping off to
- 22:19Speaker 3: eat instead of playing so close to her that Alana
- 22:22Speaker 3: can really guard both of us and I can't make
- 22:25Speaker 3: any read. So the little adjustment of coming off tight
- 22:30Speaker 3: to the screen but still a little wide has really
- 22:33Speaker 3: helped me a lot.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Amazing.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Yes, like that because your threat, the fact that you
- 22:39Speaker 2: can shoot, makes the defense have to respect that and
- 22:41Speaker 2: pulls them to you easy jump. I call it Merry
- 22:44Speaker 2: Christmas when you get these post players, these little gifts.
- 22:47Speaker 2: You know, we got to normalize. Listen the football like
- 22:50Speaker 2: the offensive line always.
- 22:51Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. Like they're showing love. The
- 22:53Speaker 1: quarterbacks showing love.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Post players gotta start showing us love and we giving
- 22:56Speaker 2: them Christmas presents.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Like give me a point or something, yeah, something, yeah.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Alright, alright, let's go to a little step back action.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Alright, what we got here? So we got a little
- 23:08Speaker 2: step back going on. Okay, so now you got the
- 23:12Speaker 2: ball in your hand. First of all, do you like that?
- 23:15Speaker 2: Do you like when you had the ball in your
- 23:16Speaker 2: hand at the top of the key. Yes, okay, cool,
- 23:19Speaker 2: So you got the ball weed, So you're in your
- 23:21Speaker 2: comfort zone. And this made me think of something. So
- 23:24Speaker 2: you played three x three. How how do you think
- 23:27Speaker 2: that helps you with space? Because three x three, like
- 23:29Speaker 2: you have to it's dogs only, it's what I call it,
- 23:33Speaker 2: like where if you're if you're on the court defender
- 23:35Speaker 2: or offense, like you have to figure it out because
- 23:39Speaker 2: there's not other people to help. So how do you
- 23:41Speaker 2: think three x three has helped you, like in these
- 23:43Speaker 2: types of situations.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Angles, cutting, setting up screens, understanding roles and spacing like
- 23:51Speaker 3: three on three has helped me so much with that. Really,
- 23:53Speaker 3: when I when I tried to move to the point
- 23:55Speaker 3: guard position from TCU, like the the Olympic. My three
- 24:00Speaker 3: on three Olympic summer helped me like understand how to
- 24:04Speaker 3: navigate that position so much and how to get people
- 24:08Speaker 3: where you want them so that you know the defense
- 24:10Speaker 3: has to make a choice and understanding things like that
- 24:14Speaker 3: that has been huge. And it also like I set
- 24:17Speaker 3: a lot of screens in three on three, so I
- 24:19Speaker 3: developed this skill set of being able to be a
- 24:22Speaker 3: great screener two, which I think as a guard, it
- 24:25Speaker 3: is something that you can really add value to your
- 24:28Speaker 3: game if you're able to do so. Yeah, three on
- 24:30Speaker 3: three definitely like dogs only if you don't compete, you're
- 24:36Speaker 3: gonna get exposed.
- 24:38Speaker 1: No doubt about it. But that's a great point.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Screeners usually open if you said a good one, so
- 24:42Speaker 2: here it's the one an island, they literally give you
- 24:44Speaker 2: a high pick and roll. To me, this signals, uh oh,
- 24:47Speaker 2: it's get a bucket time. So Camilla sets the screen,
- 24:51Speaker 2: the defender tries to fight over a little bit. Ooh
- 24:54Speaker 2: ooh this is nice, and you know what, this is
- 24:57Speaker 2: still a tough shot. But how are you like, so
- 24:59Speaker 2: when you get to that spot, is this one of
- 25:01Speaker 2: your spots? Like where if I can get to that spot,
- 25:04Speaker 2: I feel comfortable.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Yeah, a A A MIDI going to my left is
- 25:10Speaker 3: high on my shot chart of of shots that I'm
- 25:12Speaker 3: trying to get to, which I think y is valuable
- 25:17Speaker 3: because it's it's hard to guard men range it a
- 25:20Speaker 3: lot of people already there expecting the three are the layup,
- 25:23Speaker 3: so it helps me keep defenders off balanced.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Love that.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Love that, Yeah, don't forget the mid and so try
- 25:28Speaker 2: to find those moments fast break off the pick and
- 25:32Speaker 2: rolls like that, get to like you control your pace,
- 25:35Speaker 2: you control your game. So try to get to to
- 25:38Speaker 2: those moments in those hot spots. Like Simona Gustus, I
- 25:40Speaker 2: play with her. I already knew, like if Simone was
- 25:43Speaker 2: struggling that game, I'm calling the play to get her
- 25:46Speaker 2: to that spot because I know all she needs is
- 25:48Speaker 2: one and then it's a rap.
- 25:50Speaker 1: You know the other ones get there.
- 25:51Speaker 2: So you almost sometimes might have to call your own
- 25:53Speaker 2: number after you gotta flow of the game. I'm not
- 25:56Speaker 2: saying right when you check in, you call it, cause.
- 25:57Speaker 4: That everyone on so low down a little bit.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Y'all.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Get a couple of sis, give a couple merried Christmases,
- 26:05Speaker 2: and then you might call your midrange game after you're
- 26:07Speaker 2: feeling that, So just something to keep in mind. Get
- 26:10Speaker 2: to your hot spot, all right, last play we got here,
- 26:13Speaker 2: so balls in your hand again. We know you like
- 26:15Speaker 2: that now because you let us know. Oh okay, I
- 26:18Speaker 2: see this is a double screen happening.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Great setup.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Your defender fights over the first screen now here, yep
- 26:25Speaker 2: you could, y'all can read.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Definitely a late switch.
- 26:27Speaker 2: But the reason it's late is because they don't want
- 26:30Speaker 2: to leave their man. And you just talked about this,
- 26:32Speaker 2: so we're gonna see. You just talked about bringing your defender.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Now look at this separation. For me, I see two
- 26:38Speaker 2: things developing right now. What do you see developing right now?
- 26:42Speaker 3: E's role is about to go behind her defender, So, yep,
- 26:47Speaker 3: I have E. Probably I could lead E to the
- 26:50Speaker 3: rim because emma cannon is so high. And then then
- 26:55Speaker 3: it forces the person guardian Beck to make a choice
- 26:58Speaker 3: of whether she's gonna cry, and then I have the
- 27:01Speaker 3: throw behind or not, And obviously I end up I
- 27:06Speaker 3: end up making a play this this.
- 27:09Speaker 1: You know this play already. I love it. I love
- 27:11Speaker 1: that you know them all.
- 27:13Speaker 4: I know all my good things.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Good things are her to come by when you're so
- 27:17Speaker 3: everything I've done good.
- 27:18Speaker 4: I know, I know it by heart.
- 27:20Speaker 2: I love that though, keep that energy, but this is
- 27:22Speaker 2: still the right play though. You named all the right things,
- 27:25Speaker 2: and this is still the best option because as the
- 27:28Speaker 2: play developed more, you can see that Emma.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Did a great job.
- 27:31Speaker 2: She did recover quickly, and you did a great job
- 27:34Speaker 2: of look at look at these two defenders. They almost
- 27:36Speaker 2: hit each other. So once you see that, yes, raps,
- 27:38Speaker 2: like what is this boom? They hit each other like that,
- 27:41Speaker 2: it's reps, and then you just keep going downhill by
- 27:44Speaker 2: the boom, by the bang, easy layup. But that's all
- 27:47Speaker 2: the reads and so sometimes it's a point guard. It
- 27:49Speaker 2: can feel weird calling your number, but sometimes that's our
- 27:53Speaker 2: best play. Like that was something I struggled with because
- 27:55Speaker 2: I like to set people up, but sometimes it's literally
- 27:58Speaker 2: the best play for you to sh that shot.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Which is that one there? All right? So now it's
- 28:03Speaker 1: time to get in your bag. Baby. We've broken down
- 28:06Speaker 1: your game with the court. Now I want you to
- 28:08Speaker 1: give us, you know, a situation.
- 28:10Speaker 2: I want to get you a situation and you tell
- 28:12Speaker 2: me how you would handle it. So you got your
- 28:14Speaker 2: bag there. I think you got a little president there
- 28:17Speaker 2: that you're gonna read to us.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Well, I had to grab my coach bag, one of
- 28:22Speaker 3: my favorites, bring it with me everywhere. Oh okay, do
- 28:25Speaker 3: we have a little something in here?
- 28:27Speaker 1: Okay, we got what we got? What's in the bag?
- 28:33Speaker 3: It says, would you rather make a game winning shot
- 28:36Speaker 3: or love a game winning assist? Why? Okay, I'm a
- 28:43Speaker 3: natural score. Okay, I'm a natural too. So I'm gonna
- 28:47Speaker 3: stick to my roots and say game winning shot because
- 28:50Speaker 3: that's just my DNA of who I am.
- 28:52Speaker 1: And let's go me like that.
- 28:55Speaker 4: So we're sticking with it.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Okay, So no, So then you got the game. It's
- 28:59Speaker 1: a time. It's a tide ball game.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Like, let's say you got less than ten seconds left.
- 29:06Speaker 2: What play are you drawing up to get yourself the
- 29:09Speaker 2: game winning shot? What play would be just the perfect
- 29:12Speaker 2: play for.
- 29:12Speaker 1: You in that moment? Can you draw this up?
- 29:14Speaker 3: Like?
- 29:14Speaker 1: I mean, I think you have. Let me see cause,
- 29:16Speaker 1: let me see what you got, coach.
- 29:18Speaker 4: Come, let me let me put my coaching hair on. Really, okay,
- 29:22Speaker 4: I got it.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Let's see what we got and talk us through it.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Where we go and talk us through it?
- 29:28Speaker 3: Okay, So to get a to set up a play
- 29:32Speaker 3: for me to make a read or get a bucket.
- 29:35Speaker 3: I've learned that I love guard to guard ghost actions
- 29:38Speaker 3: cause it's hard for people to guard them. It takes
- 29:41Speaker 3: a lot of communication to guard it correctly, and a
- 29:43Speaker 3: lot of time people aren't willing to communicate to do it.
- 29:46Speaker 3: So it always gives me an advantage. But of course
- 29:49Speaker 3: I'm gonna start with the ball on the right side
- 29:52Speaker 3: because I want to go to my left. I'm a
- 29:54Speaker 3: true lefty and I always like one of my best
- 30:00Speaker 3: shooters to do the ghost with me. Whoever on the
- 30:02Speaker 3: floor is my best shooter. I want them to come
- 30:06Speaker 3: from the bottom. Let's get the bigs.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Okay, we're getting reaction over here.
- 30:12Speaker 4: I like this.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Yeah, so I'm gonna have I want the big space
- 30:17Speaker 3: in the dunker because I want I want a lot of.
- 30:19Speaker 4: Space to create in the key if I get that deep.
- 30:22Speaker 3: And really it's a simple play because it makes the
- 30:24Speaker 3: defense and I just all I want is the guard
- 30:27Speaker 3: to come up and I'm gonna start moving slowly towards
- 30:30Speaker 3: them and it's a ghost and they don't hit it,
- 30:32Speaker 3: and then I'm coming downhill to my left hand, which
- 30:35Speaker 3: is where I make I make a lot of good
- 30:38Speaker 3: plays and all the good breeds.
- 30:39Speaker 2: So show it to us, show us, show us the
- 30:41Speaker 2: board now, because I know what you're talking about.
- 30:43Speaker 1: But let everybody.
- 30:44Speaker 2: So basically, the reason that you want the best shooter
- 30:47Speaker 2: is because that's the biggest chance for people to make
- 30:49Speaker 2: a mistake. Somebody might stay connected. They don't want to
- 30:52Speaker 2: leave the shooter. Now you come off clean because your
- 30:55Speaker 2: man might have switched on to them. Now you have
- 30:57Speaker 2: a clean, strong left handed drive going downhill.
- 31:01Speaker 1: You just told us.
- 31:02Speaker 2: That MIDI to the left is your sweet spot, so
- 31:04Speaker 2: you could stop there, you could go all the way.
- 31:08Speaker 3: Even if they do get a clean switch and they
- 31:10Speaker 3: guard it correctly, I just I'll just bounce it out
- 31:12Speaker 3: and play one on one and probably get to some
- 31:15Speaker 3: sort of drag step back, any type of action going
- 31:19Speaker 3: to my left. So even if they do guard it right,
- 31:21Speaker 3: they still have to guard the ISO at the end,
- 31:23Speaker 3: they're not escaping that. So I think it's a great play.
- 31:26Speaker 1: I love that.
- 31:27Speaker 2: That's how you stay true to yourself, Like, that's how
- 31:29Speaker 2: you get.
- 31:30Speaker 1: To where you're going.
- 31:31Speaker 2: All right, So before we wrap this up, I just
- 31:33Speaker 2: want to give you my two cents right quick, because
- 31:36Speaker 2: I can see, like, first of all, I love that
- 31:38Speaker 2: you're a student of the game. I can tell that
- 31:40Speaker 2: this is a film study we had, but you already
- 31:42Speaker 2: have studied all of your film And I can tell
- 31:44Speaker 2: that the thing, the thing that is the hardest thing
- 31:47Speaker 2: to keep and the easiest thing to lose in the
- 31:50Speaker 2: WNBA is confidence.
- 31:51Speaker 1: And so with shooting, like confidence shows up everywhere.
- 31:55Speaker 2: It shows up in your shooting, it shows up in
- 31:57Speaker 2: your energy, it shows up in your attitude.
- 32:00Speaker 1: So I know it's such a simple thing.
- 32:02Speaker 2: But I made a career off of showing up the
- 32:05Speaker 2: exact same way every day, Like it don't matter if
- 32:08Speaker 2: I'm sick, if I'm having a bad day, a good day,
- 32:11Speaker 2: you know what you're gonna get from me every single night.
- 32:15Speaker 2: And my coaches could rely on that. It didn't matter
- 32:17Speaker 2: if I was hitting shots that night, it didn't matter
- 32:19Speaker 2: if I was getting a lot of dimes. It didn't
- 32:22Speaker 2: matter because they knew that I was gonna come in,
- 32:24Speaker 2: I was gonna know my scout, I was gonna have
- 32:25Speaker 2: a certain energy, and I was gonna limit my mistakes.
- 32:28Speaker 2: So my best advice that I could give to you,
- 32:30Speaker 2: somebody that's already doing all the right things that you
- 32:33Speaker 2: can to put yourself in position, like talk nice to
- 32:36Speaker 2: you in your head.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Yeah, So it's easy.
- 32:38Speaker 4: It's easy talk.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Nice to you, okay, Like cause in our heads is
- 32:42Speaker 2: where we have the real warfare, and it's where we
- 32:45Speaker 2: really be. We're mad at ourselves almost cause we know
- 32:47Speaker 2: we can do better. So you gotta just kind of
- 32:50Speaker 2: talk nice to you a little bit better and that'll
- 32:52Speaker 2: just carry out further.
- 32:54Speaker 1: So that's that's all I got.
- 32:56Speaker 2: I appreciate you chopping chopping it up with me for
- 32:58Speaker 2: film study presented by Coach.
- 33:00Speaker 4: Thank you and I
