Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hello and welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today we are in Psalm 143. We're actually in our last full
- 0:23week of Book 5 of Psalms and I am so excited, man.
- 0:29It just feels like it's been so long that we've been in Psalms
- 0:35and that's both like literally it's been maybe four or five
- 0:41months now because we started in Book 5 of Psalms, I think in
- 0:47September or October right after we finished Ephesians.
- 0:52And so it's been literally a long time there.
- 0:55But then going through the other four books of Psalms, man, we've
- 0:59been doing that since I believe March of 2024.
- 1:05And so now about two years later, we are wrapping up all of
- 1:10Psalms and certainly many other books as well in the meantime.
- 1:14But I am just so excited to be diving into the passage for
- 1:18today and looking forward to hopefully how the Lord will use
- 1:24a Tabernacle talk even going forward.
- 1:26And looking forward to a couple of things that we have even next
- 1:29week as we conclude Book 5 of Psalms, things that I'm really
- 1:34looking forward to. But let's read beginning in
- 1:36verse #1 of Psalm 143. The inscription for this Psalm
- 1:40reads a Psalm of David. He says, Yahweh, hear my prayer.
- 1:46In your faithfulness listen to my plea, and in your
- 1:50righteousness answer me. Do not bring your servant into
- 1:53judgement, for no one alive is righteous in your sight.
- 1:58For the enemy has pursued me, crushing me to the ground,
- 2:01making me live in darkness like those long dead.
- 2:05My spirit is weak within me. My heart is overcome with
- 2:09dismay. I remember the days of old.
- 2:12I meditate on all you have done. I reflect on the work of your
- 2:17hands. I spread out my hands to you.
- 2:20I am like parched land before you, sailor.
- 2:25Answer me quickly, Yahweh, my spirit fails.
- 2:28Don't hide your face from me or I will be like those going down
- 2:32to the pit. Let me experience Your faithful
- 2:35love in the morning, for I trust in You.
- 2:39Reveal to me the way I should go, because I appeal to You.
- 2:44Rescue me from my enemies. Yahweh, I come to You for
- 2:47protection. Teach me to do Your will, for
- 2:51You are my God. May Your gracious Spirit lead me
- 2:55on level ground for Your name's sake.
- 2:57Yahweh, let me live in Your righteousness, deliver me from
- 3:01trouble, and in your faithful love, destroy my enemies, wipe
- 3:05out all those who attack me, for I am your servant, while this is
- 3:13another one of those psalms of David where he's going.
- 3:15God, I am in big trouble and I am in desperate need of your
- 3:20assistance, and I don't know what your day is like today.
- 3:25But as I've mentioned before, whether you have physical human
- 3:29enemies like here David did, or whether you don't have human
- 3:35enemies right now, all of us have our spiritual enemy, Satan
- 3:40and his demons. And so as we walk through this
- 3:44passage, I think there's some things that we can be encouraged
- 3:46about even for our spiritual battleground and about our
- 3:50relationship with God, about prayers and unanswered prayers
- 3:54and times of great loneliness and soul tension.
- 4:01All of that we can see from this passage today.
- 4:04Let's begin looking at verses 1 and 2.
- 4:07He says Yahweh, hear my prayer. In your faithfulness, listen to
- 4:12my plea and in your righteousness, answer me here.
- 4:16David's asking for God to. It's not just like listen to his
- 4:21prayer. We realize that God always in
- 4:24one sense hears our prayers, but he's wanting God to act as a
- 4:30result of what he hears in the prayer of David.
- 4:34And again, I've mentioned this to you guys before.
- 4:38This feels so affronting to me unless I think about it like my
- 4:46kids asking me something where when my kids go, dad, like pay
- 4:52attention, dad, listen to me. I no longer think of it like
- 4:58someone going up to a great king or ruler or politician and
- 5:02insisting that they do something for the one that's asking.
- 5:07When you think about it that way, you can go, man, David
- 5:10seems like he's being kind of rude to God.
- 5:13But when we recognize that God is our heavenly Father, He is
- 5:16the one who cares most about us. He's the one that loves us.
- 5:20He's the one that seeks not just our worship, but he seeks a
- 5:26relationship of love and care with us.
- 5:31Man. We can be encouraged, as we
- 5:33heard in Hebrews chapter 4, to come boldly to the throne of
- 5:37grace so that we may find grace to help in time of need.
- 5:42So David says, God, I want you to hear, to listen, to act on
- 5:46this prayer that I'm bringing to you.
- 5:49And he gives 2 reasons why God should listen to him.
- 5:51He says, God, because of your faithfulness, because of the
- 5:54fact that you are consistent in what you do.
- 5:57You are the same yesterday and today and forever.
- 6:01And I'm thankful that that's the kind of God that we serve.
- 6:05And so here David says, God, because you're consistent, be
- 6:08consistent here in rescuing me because I'm in danger.
- 6:13God, you've rescued me before. Would you rescue me again?
- 6:17And the longer that I live, the more and more I'm able to even
- 6:20draw not just on the histories and testimonies of other people
- 6:25and how they've seen God work in their lives.
- 6:28I've been able to go, God, I remember when you were here for
- 6:32me in college. And God, I remember when you
- 6:35intervened in Washington in a big way.
- 6:38And God, I remember two years ago when you did this at
- 6:42Tabernacle, and God, last year when you did this.
- 6:44And so God, for the thing that I'm facing today, would you be
- 6:47faithful and consistent in your interactions with me?
- 6:53So David says, because of your faithfulness, listen to my plea,
- 6:57he says. And in your righteousness answer
- 6:59me, God, because you do what is right all day, every day,
- 7:04because you never choose to do what is wrong, because you
- 7:08choose to live in a right relationship with your created
- 7:14beings. Now, we don't always see things
- 7:17the way that God does. So if you're like, man, this
- 7:20thing happened in my life and I don't really see how God could
- 7:23be right in dealing with me that way.
- 7:25My friend, look at the book of Job.
- 7:30At some point we're going to be going through that together.
- 7:32I actually, I'll throw this in. If you're listening, you can
- 7:37accept this. My wife has been going through
- 7:42the book of Job with a gal that she's discipling and the
- 7:46insights, the the joys that are there are just so incredible.
- 7:50And I would actually love to have Samantha on the podcast
- 7:55with me. I'd have to figure out a few
- 7:56things, Mike wise to see if I could make it work.
- 7:58But if I can make it work, I think it would be a tremendous
- 8:03joy to go through the Book of Job with her.
- 8:07I just think it'd be a blast. Anyways, so look at the book of
- 8:11Job. God does what is right by His
- 8:14creation, by His people. And so David says, God, because
- 8:18you will do what is right. I'm asking that you would do
- 8:21what is right in protecting and saving me in this environment.
- 8:26And then he gives in verse #2A very, very interesting verse.
- 8:30He says do not bring your servant into judgment for no one
- 8:34alive is righteous in your sight.
- 8:38He says, God, I understand that I am imperfect and so it very
- 8:44well could be that this hardship that I'm going through is as a
- 8:49result of my sin. So you can think many times in
- 8:52David's life where this would apply.
- 8:55He could be praying this as his men want to kill him as a result
- 9:02of their wives and children being kidnapped and taken away
- 9:07from the city of Ziklag by the Amalekites when David was like,
- 9:11oh, yeah, we'll go out and we'll do some missions for this
- 9:14Philistine king. And really, like, we're we're
- 9:19acting on behalf of Israel. We're not acting on behalf of
- 9:23the city, the Philistine city of Gaffe.
- 9:26But he doesn't know about that because we're telling him, Oh,
- 9:28yeah, you know, everything went great and we did this and that.
- 9:33And so there's just a lot of, like, lies and decedent stuff
- 9:35that are going on. And it ends up David and the men
- 9:40are going to go with the Philistines to attack King Saul
- 9:46and his army. But the rest of the Philistine
- 9:49kings tell Akish, King of Gath, they're like, no, there is no
- 9:52way. We are letting David, the guy
- 9:54that they used to sing Saul has killed his thousands, but David,
- 9:58his 10s of thousands, they said, we're not letting him go into
- 10:02battle with us because how in the world could he more endear
- 10:05himself to Saul than going into battle with us and then turning
- 10:10against us and we all get destroyed.
- 10:12And Akash is like, oh, but I love David.
- 10:14He's so great. All right, fine, David, you go
- 10:16back with the guys. They they won't let, they won't
- 10:20let me include you in our army. So David and his men go back to
- 10:25their kind of home base of Ziklag.
- 10:28And when they get there, it's been burned to the ground.
- 10:31All their wives and kids are gone.
- 10:33And so then the men are like, oh, come on, David.
- 10:36Like, what in the world did you do?
- 10:37We're going to kill you. And so, David, there could be
- 10:41praying like, oh, Lord, you see everything that's going on.
- 10:44You know that. Like, I've made some mistakes.
- 10:46I've seen in some ways, but God don't, don't bring me into
- 10:49judgment, like don't condemn and punish me in this moment because
- 10:54God, no one's righteous, like no one deserves the goodness of God
- 10:59based on their perfect rule keeping and their perfect
- 11:03morality. He says none of us have that.
- 11:05He says so God don't bring me into judgment.
- 11:08Could be, you know, as he's on the run from his son Absalom,
- 11:12who was trying to take over the Kingdom.
- 11:14And the whole reason that Absalom wanted to do that was
- 11:17because of David's neglect of executing justice on his son
- 11:23that had raped a daughter of David, who was the sister of
- 11:28Absalom. So it could be that that he goes
- 11:32like God, you know, the ways that I failed don't treat me
- 11:37according to what my morality and what my choices in life have
- 11:41earned me says because God, no one is right enough.
- 11:45No one is as opposed to the God who is righteous.
- 11:48He says, God, there is no one alive who is righteous in your
- 11:53sight. And of course, the New Testament
- 11:54authors pick up on this thread that David writes many times and
- 11:59Paul would echo the same exact thought where he says all have
- 12:02sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, which is why Jesus
- 12:06came. So this can be a prayer that we
- 12:09pray as well. God, I understand that I've done
- 12:11some things. I said some things maybe within
- 12:13my family, within my job, within my friend group.
- 12:17And it very well could be that I am experiencing some of the
- 12:21consequences of my actions right now.
- 12:24God, don't bring me into judgment.
- 12:26God, forgive me for my Sid, but I'm asking for you to work in a
- 12:30supernatural way. I'm asking for you to heal this
- 12:33relationship that is broken. God, I'm asking for financial
- 12:37provision in this moment, even though like I might be in this
- 12:43financial mess because of bad choices I've made.
- 12:45But God, because you are faithful, because you are good
- 12:48to me, would you not punish me, but instead would you have mercy
- 12:53on me? And hear this is what David is
- 12:55praying, he says in verses 3 and 4.
- 12:57For the enemy has pursued me, crushing me to the ground,
- 13:01making me live in darkness like those long dead.
- 13:06And so he says God like I just feel thrushed.
- 13:10I feel like no one really cares or knows that I am alive.
- 13:15I feel totally alone and forgotten, like I'm as good as
- 13:20dead right now. Verse four, he says my spirit is
- 13:23weak within me. The word for spirit in Hebrew is
- 13:27ruach in the New Testament in Greek, it's pneuma.
- 13:31In both cases. It's like your breath.
- 13:33It's my life breath. It's my very essence of my
- 13:39animated spirit and existence in life.
- 13:43So you can think about drawing your final breath where you is
- 13:49like your spirit, your life is gone out of you.
- 13:51It's the immaterial part of you. And he says my spirit is weak
- 13:59within me. I'm just totally at the mercy of
- 14:04those that are seeking to harm me.
- 14:07I don't have strength right now, he says.
- 14:09My heart is overcome with dismay that the seat of my mind and
- 14:16will and emotions is just like depressed and sad.
- 14:21And you might be saying, well, I don't have people like coming
- 14:24after me right now like David did literal physical enemies.
- 14:28But I've been there too. I felt just weak, downtrodden,
- 14:32depressed in in spirit and an attitude and I I've been there.
- 14:38Well, I'm thankful that God gives us this language in
- 14:41Scripture so that when we experience those kinds of
- 14:44things, we can pray the prayers that David did.
- 14:47And we know God brought David out of all of his troubles and
- 14:52saved him despite his wickedness and despite his evil, that God
- 14:56had a merciful love for him. And God's not going to treat
- 15:00David in that way and then go to you and go, no, I forgave David,
- 15:05I had mercy for David, I love David, but really, you've done
- 15:10too much wrong. And so I'm not going to treat
- 15:12you that way. No, God is faithful.
- 15:15He's righteous. And so the way that he treated
- 15:18David is the way that he will treat you.
- 15:21Now, that doesn't mean you're going to be king over all
- 15:23Israel. It doesn't mean the literal
- 15:25physical Messiah is going to come from your lineage.
- 15:29He won't do everything for you that he did for David.
- 15:32But the way that He will treat you is the way that he treated
- 15:35David versus 5 and 6. I remember the days of old.
- 15:39I meditate on all you have done. I reflect on the work of your
- 15:44hands. That's what we do.
- 15:45Every time that we look at Tabernacle talk, every time we
- 15:48open Scripture, we remember what God has done.
- 15:52We think about it over and over and over again and we go, man,
- 15:56God, you are good, you are powerful, you work miracles and
- 16:01wonders, you save, you forgive, you do all of these good things.
- 16:05And so that influences the way that I think about my situation
- 16:09right now, because the God who worked back then is the same God
- 16:13now. He is not a lesser God.
- 16:16He has not become less powerful over time.
- 16:19No, I can trust that this God that I read about in Psalm 143,
- 16:24I can trust that the God I read about who on the cross said,
- 16:27Father, forgive them. I can read about this God that
- 16:32parted the Red Sea, this God that was there encouraging and
- 16:37helping Elijah when he was despairing to death.
- 16:40That God is the same God that I worship today.
- 16:43And so I can remember, I can meditate, I can reflect here the
- 16:47remembering. This is calling back to mind
- 16:51that sometimes we forget to think about God.
- 16:53But he says I remember the days of old and what God, Dad, he
- 16:56says, I meditate on all you have done.
- 16:58It's I'm thinking about it over and over and over and over
- 17:01again. I'm not just choosing that for,
- 17:04you know, 1520 minutes in the morning.
- 17:06I'm thinking about God. But all throughout the rest of
- 17:09the day, I'm thinking about what I read or what I listen to or
- 17:12what I, you know, journaled or whatever about what God has
- 17:17done. I meditate on it.
- 17:18I think about it over and over and over again.
- 17:21And then he says, I reflect on the work of your hands.
- 17:24I'm going to choose to not just have the stories or the passages
- 17:28in the Bible be something that's like, great, you know, that
- 17:31happened 3000 years ago. Wonderful.
- 17:34No, instead I'm going to say this has an impact on the way
- 17:38that I live my life. I might not be going through
- 17:41everything that David was going through, but I felt some of
- 17:44these emotions. I have some of these same
- 17:47recognitions of my imperfection in the sight of a holy God, of
- 17:51consequences for my actions and a desire for mercy from God.
- 17:56I just love that little trifecta there.
- 17:58I remember, I meditate, I reflect.
- 18:01Verse 6, he says. I spread out my hands to you.
- 18:04You know, I've got my toddlers right now, technically as the
- 18:08toddler bees, just a small kid at this point.
- 18:12And as they spread out their hands to me to pick them up
- 18:15every single time, I think there will come a day when I can no
- 18:21longer, either due to their weight or my lack of muscle.
- 18:26There's going to come a day when I can no longer pick up my kids
- 18:29or all have picked them up for the very last time.
- 18:32And I'm so glad that my God isn't like that.
- 18:35There's never going to come a day where he goes.
- 18:38No, I, I reject you, Brian, I will not comfort you.
- 18:42I will not bring you joy. I will not work wonders or work
- 18:49miracles out of these situations that you're agonizing over and
- 18:52praying over that when I spread my hands out to God, he is
- 18:55always able to work and maybe he'll change the situation,
- 19:00maybe he'll change me, but he's going to do something and I'm so
- 19:04thankful for that. He says, I spread out my hands
- 19:07to you. I'm like parched land before
- 19:10you. He goes, God, I'm a desert and I
- 19:13maybe not even a desert and he goes, God, I am land that needs
- 19:18to bring out like fruit in my life.
- 19:22You can think agricultural setting here.
- 19:24You need the rains to come so that then you can plant the
- 19:30seeds so that the seeds get watered so that the plants come
- 19:34up that they don't, you know, wither and die.
- 19:37You need the water and David says God, I need you like this
- 19:43land needs water. And we need to recognize that
- 19:49that we don't just need God in small instances.
- 19:55You would have to have the water at every single moment of the
- 20:00process. When he says I'm like parched
- 20:03land before you got, I need you so that the word of God can take
- 20:07root in my heart. I need you so that the word of
- 20:09God that has come into my heart because the ground was soft
- 20:13enough to receive it. It wasn't Stony ground or thorny
- 20:16ground. God, I need that same water of
- 20:20the Spirit to bring forth its character, the character of God
- 20:25within my life. And then God, I need you to keep
- 20:28on cultivating that so that it grows more and more and more.
- 20:32You have kind of the Psalm one, It's like a tree planted by the
- 20:35rivers of water that brings forth its fruit and its season.
- 20:39God, I want to not just have a tree of faith in my life, but I
- 20:42want that tree to have repercussions for all of those
- 20:47around me. Whether it's that I am bringing
- 20:49other people into faith with Christ, whether it's I'm
- 20:51discipling other people in their walk with the Lord.
- 20:54But God, I need you because you are the water, you are the rain
- 20:59that I need for every single moment and instance of my life.
- 21:04I love. I love that word picture there,
- 21:07verses 7 through 10. Answer me quickly, Yahweh, my
- 21:10spirit fails. Don't hide your face from me or
- 21:14I will be like those going down to the pit that is the grave.
- 21:19He says, let me experience your faithful love in the morning
- 21:22fright just in you like God, get me through the night.
- 21:25And I don't know about you guys. I've been there at points in my
- 21:28life where I'm like, all right, God, you know, maybe it's 11:00
- 21:31at night or maybe it's 3:00 in the morning and I'm just going,
- 21:35God, would you just get me to the morning that I would be able
- 21:39to experience your consistent, loyal, covenant, steadfast,
- 21:43faithful love. God, just get me to the morning
- 21:47and he says for I trust in you that I believe you will come
- 21:52through for me time and time and time again and you can pray.
- 21:56God just get me to tomorrow morning and he will and he's
- 21:59faithful says reveal to me the way I should go because I appeal
- 22:04to you when you don't know what you should do, when you don't
- 22:07know what you should say, look to God and don't just go our
- 22:12God. I want to know what your will is
- 22:15for this situation. I want to know what the right
- 22:17thing to do is and then just be like waiting and expecting, you
- 22:21know, an audible something in your ear.
- 22:23No turn to the Word because God will show you through the
- 22:27interactions, through the mindsets, through the principles
- 22:31of the Word of God. The Holy Spirit will use the
- 22:34Word of God to make the child of God more like the Son of God.
- 22:37When you need answers, rely on the Holy Spirit and then use
- 22:41what the Holy Spirit has already given you in His Word so that
- 22:45you can know what His will is. Verse 9 says rescue me from my
- 22:49enemies. Yahweh, I come to you for
- 22:51protection. If you have been suffering
- 22:54through temptations and trials, turn to the Lord and ask for His
- 22:59rescue. That just as Satan wanted to
- 23:03destroy Job, just as Satan wanted to use Peter to derail
- 23:08Christ from the direction that he needed to go.
- 23:11Even as we would read and see the First or Second Chronicles,
- 23:14I assume First Chronicles that David or sorry that Satan
- 23:19tempted David to number the people, something that was
- 23:23forbidden from the Law of Moses because they weren't supposed to
- 23:27rely on their numbers, they were supposed to rely on their God.
- 23:31That Satan wants to destroy you in your life.
- 23:35And we see from the gospels over and over and over again what
- 23:38defeats the devil. Well it is the word of God and
- 23:41by that I mean specifically the Son of God.
- 23:44But then all of those that follow in Jesus pattern and
- 23:48utilize scripture that utilize the word of God, that comes from
- 23:53the word of God, if you will, by the Bible scripture that comes
- 23:59from Jesus who is himself the Incarnate Lagos, the word that
- 24:04we are able to defeat Satan through reliance on God and his
- 24:10word. And so you can ask the Lord for
- 24:12rescue from your temptations and your trials.
- 24:15He is the one that can protect you.
- 24:17Verse 10 teach me to do your will for you are my God.
- 24:23Notice he doesn't say help me to do my will, He says teach me to
- 24:27do your will. What you want to do in your life
- 24:30is not necessarily what God wants you to do with your life.
- 24:33Ask the Lord not to help you be successful at everything you
- 24:37want to do. Ask God to help you be
- 24:39successful in everything that He wants you to do.
- 24:43I think of Joshua 1/8. This book of the law shall not
- 24:46depart out of your mouth, but you will meditate on it day and
- 24:50night, for then you will make your way prosperous, and then
- 24:54you will have good success. Then verses 11 and 12 as He
- 24:59ends, for your name's sake, Yahweh, let me live in your
- 25:03righteousness, deliver me from trouble, and in your faithful
- 25:07love, destroy my enemies, wipe out all those who attacked me,
- 25:11for I am your servant. He says, God, you know I just
- 25:15want to follow you. Would you rescue me from these
- 25:18people literally and trying to kill me?
- 25:21Hopefully you don't have anyone looking to kill you today.
- 25:24But I am thankful that the one who is the enemy of our souls,
- 25:27Satan, that old dragon, the serpent from Genesis 3, he is
- 25:32the one that will be forever destroyed from the presence of
- 25:36the Father. And what a joy that that is.
- 25:39If you want some encouragement today, read Revelation 20.
- 25:42Read about Satan and his end result.
- 25:46And then don't listen to him today.
- 25:47Don't listen to his temptations. Don't fall away from the Lord in
- 25:52your trials, instead rely on the Lord and know what the end
- 25:56result is for the one that brings those difficulties into
- 26:00your life. God does not tempt or or try any
- 26:04man with evil. That's what we read in James
- 26:05one, but instead Satan is this one that wants to destroy us.
- 26:10He is walking around like a roaring lion, seeking who he may
- 26:14devour, but his end is death and destruction.
- 26:19And I'm looking forward to that day when sin is no more and when
- 26:23I am forever reconciled with my Savior.
- 26:26What a great God that we serve and man from this Psalm.
- 26:30What an encouragement to rely on God's Spirit and to have a
- 26:36genuine confidence and reliance on the Word of God to shape how
- 26:42I think about my life and how I pursue God's will in my everyday
- 26:48life as I go to Him in prayer and ask for Him to use what I
- 26:52have read to help guide me through the day.
- 26:55Thanks for tuning in today. Hope you have a great one man.
- 26:58It was a longer episode today, but thank you for tuning in.
- 27:01See you next episode.
