Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Right, Which suburbs will Auckland Council save from high rise
- 0:03Speaker 1: apartment towers? That is the question after the government you
- 0:05Speaker 1: turn on intensification yesterday. The council apparently has until around
- 0:10Speaker 1: April to tell the government. Andy Baker is Franklin Ward
- 0:13Speaker 1: councilor joins us live this morning. Andy, good morning, Kday. Right,
- 0:16Speaker 1: So who it is council that will decide or at
- 0:19Speaker 1: least recommend to the government which suburbs. Do you know
- 0:23Speaker 1: have an idea of which suburbs you might be saving
- 0:25Speaker 1: from high rises?
- 0:27Speaker 2: No, we don't because we haven't seen any detail yet.
- 0:30Speaker 2: But you know, I would imagine with the intent being
- 0:33Speaker 2: that we're going to intensify along the when near transport
- 0:37Speaker 2: hubs and along the rapid transit network, it's those areas
- 0:40Speaker 2: on the outside of those that aren't as well served
- 0:43Speaker 2: that will be first in line to be have a
- 0:46Speaker 2: specter of intensification removed from them.
- 0:49Speaker 1: So you're Mount Eden's, oh.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Well, who knows? I mean? And that's the thing. And
- 0:54Speaker 2: so you know Mount Eden has a beautiful new train
- 0:57Speaker 2: station getting built there, Munga Foe so as part of
- 1:01Speaker 2: the CRL. So you know, who knows I don't think
- 1:04Speaker 2: it's going to please everybody. The outcome. I don't think
- 1:07Speaker 2: it's the silver bullet that some people have been asking for.
- 1:10Speaker 1: So for those because there is the people with the
- 1:12Speaker 1: character homes and the character areas, they're going, yeah, we've won.
- 1:15Speaker 1: You're saying, not necessarily.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I'd be. It wouldn't be. I wouldn't be celebrating too soon.
- 1:22Speaker 2: You know, who knows, And that's the thing. It's just
- 1:24Speaker 2: we just don't know, and we're going to have to.
- 1:26Speaker 2: You know, as of last night, staff had any engagement
- 1:30Speaker 2: with government officials. We only know what's out in the
- 1:34Speaker 2: public arena from what we've seen and read.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Is it fair to say, if you are in the CBD,
- 1:40Speaker 1: or if you are in the town center or near
- 1:43Speaker 1: a station, you're probably going to have a high rise
- 1:46Speaker 1: near you, and if you're not, you won't.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, I think that's a reasonable assumption and
- 1:52Speaker 2: that makes sense, and I don't think there's been too
- 1:54Speaker 2: much opposition to that whole sort of the context of
- 1:58Speaker 2: doing it, and in the intensification where there is access
- 2:02Speaker 2: to good public transport. You know, we do have to
- 2:05Speaker 2: take into consideration heritage and the other things that we've
- 2:09Speaker 2: been told are important Talklanders, but exactly what that means
- 2:15Speaker 2: we won't know yet and for a little while yet.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Appreciate your time this morning, Andy. Thank you, Andy Baker,
- 2:20Speaker 1: Franklin WARLD counselor.
