- 0:37Speaker 3: Hello, Leggy.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Morning, fellas.
- 0:39Speaker 6: All right, let's go back before we go forward tonight.
- 0:45Speaker 6: The Chargers game.
- 0:46Speaker 5: We've heard the reaction from Bo Nix and it sounds
- 0:50Speaker 5: like he's in one right now. How much of this
- 0:52Speaker 5: do you think is purely mental from Bo Nix on
- 0:55Speaker 5: the struggles offensively? How much of this is just a
- 0:58Speaker 5: talent and physical thing?
- 1:01Speaker 2: Well, you know, I guess I'd say it ain't all him.
- 1:04Speaker 4: He just gets the, you know, welcome to the world
- 1:08Speaker 4: of quarterbacks in the NFL. You are, you are the
- 1:12Speaker 4: hub of the wheel, criticism, praise, you know, glory yeah
- 1:17Speaker 4: grouchiness all of it you're in there but i mean
- 1:20Speaker 4: you know i think you're looking at you know you
- 1:24Speaker 4: see this a lot with with guys in the nfl
- 1:28Speaker 4: you know success has been such a big part of
- 1:31Speaker 4: their athletic life you know as they get to the
- 1:34Speaker 4: nfl and life was pretty good for bow nicks as
- 1:38Speaker 4: a young quarterback you know he had you know his
- 1:41Speaker 4: rookie year was kind of gravy They were surprisingly better.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Than people thought.
- 1:47Speaker 4: They were finishing the playoffs.
- 1:52Speaker 2: They make the wild card round.
- 1:54Speaker 4: He has some comeback wins and makes some plays off
- 1:59Speaker 4: schedule and all of those things. I think this is
- 2:04Speaker 4: kind of like his NFL version of Auburn right now.
- 2:07Speaker 4: He's taken a lot of heat, and it's hard to
- 2:10Speaker 4: know what to do with that unless you've been through it.
- 2:13Speaker 4: And this is kind of his first trick through it
- 2:16Speaker 4: in the NFL at this level. But mechanically, there's some
- 2:20Speaker 4: issues there.
- 2:21Speaker 2: And, you know, it's up to him and the Broncos.
- 2:25Speaker 4: You know, they've got a, you know, the largest coaching
- 2:29Speaker 4: staff in the NFL. And, you know, they got some
- 2:33Speaker 4: things to do with the quarterback, but the protection hasn't
- 2:37Speaker 4: always been great. They don't run the ball that great. And,
- 2:41Speaker 4: you know, when On plays where Nix does have some time,
- 2:46Speaker 4: the receivers don't always get separation or the route concepts
- 2:51Speaker 4: don't give him many options sometimes.
- 2:54Speaker 2: So I think it is.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Truly a collective struggle right now, and he's taking a
- 3:00Speaker 4: lot of the heat. I think it's probably not fun
- 3:03Speaker 4: for him right now.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Jeffrey, you've been around a long time. Long time.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah, a really long time.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Anciently long. Do you recall before, before the internet, before
- 3:15Speaker 2: the internet? Yeah, that's for sure. How about that?
- 3:17Speaker 3: See, if I said that you'd be all over me,
- 3:19Speaker 3: but Vic says that you just play with love. Cause
- 3:22Speaker 3: I'm just as old as he is.
- 3:23Speaker 5: That's why.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Do you recall a press conference like the one Bo
- 3:27Speaker 3: had earlier this week that displayed such vulnerability?
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah. I think he's, he's trying to be as honest
- 3:34Speaker 2: as he can.
- 3:34Speaker 4: And you don't often see that, you know, these days
- 3:38Speaker 4: in such a public forum, uh, And then, you know,
- 3:42Speaker 4: I see, and then he takes some heat, you know,
- 3:44Speaker 4: people clip it. And, you know, I've mentioned some things,
- 3:47Speaker 4: you know, myself that struck me what he said, but
- 3:51Speaker 4: I sort of, you know, it's watching him try and
- 3:57Speaker 4: figure out sort of what to say, how to explain
- 4:01Speaker 4: it and like convey in some fashion how he feels
- 4:08Speaker 4: about it without just sort of unloading on on everything
- 4:11Speaker 4: I think is a, is a hard line for him
- 4:13Speaker 4: to walk, but he's, you know, the last two weeks,
- 4:17Speaker 4: I think he's, you know, you can see it, it
- 4:21Speaker 4: is weighing on his mind and that's a hard way
- 4:24Speaker 4: to play, frankly.
- 4:25Speaker 6: Yeah. Brock Huard was on with the morning sprint yesterday.
- 4:30Speaker 5: He talked about what he gleaned from the comments from
- 4:34Speaker 5: Bo Nix and, So I'm going to play this for you.
- 4:36Speaker 6: Just get your reaction to it. Here's Brock Huard.
- 4:38Speaker 7: This morning on the show, we spent a segment playing
- 4:40Speaker 7: the 60 seconds of Bo Nix yesterday versus about 25
- 4:45Speaker 7: seconds of Sam Darnold. And they were both reacting to
- 4:48Speaker 7: the same thing. Turnovers, right? Getting the ball out of
- 4:51Speaker 7: your hand. What are you seeing? And for Bo, it
- 4:55Speaker 7: was fascinating. I think it was such a window in
- 4:58Speaker 7: to what ended my NFL career. I could not turn
- 5:01Speaker 7: the voices off.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I couldn't do it.
- 5:04Speaker 7: When I got to the NFL, it was Mike Holmgren's voice.
- 5:07Speaker 7: It was just Tom Moore's voice. Very different voices, but
- 5:10Speaker 7: their voices. I couldn't shut them out. I got to
- 5:14Speaker 7: do this.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I got to do this.
- 5:15Speaker 6: What do you think about that, his assessment?
- 5:18Speaker 4: I think you can see a lot of that in both,
- 5:21Speaker 4: but whenever you see a quarterback struggle with where to
- 5:26Speaker 4: go with the ball and passing open receivers and leaving
- 5:29Speaker 4: clean pockets, those are all usually a guy working through
- 5:35Speaker 4: the long list of things he's been told. Now, you know,
- 5:38Speaker 4: that said, Sean Payton even made it a point and
- 5:41Speaker 4: has made it a point the last two seasons to say,
- 5:46Speaker 4: you have to be careful how much you tell that position.
- 5:50Speaker 4: So I think he recognizes and it's basically admitting what's
- 5:56Speaker 4: going on. But, you know, again, I, look, it's a
- 6:00Speaker 4: highly paid profession. You get a lot of, you know,
- 6:04Speaker 4: I always say the richer you get, the more free
- 6:06Speaker 4: stuff people want to give you. And so it's, it's
- 6:10Speaker 4: a good life out there in the land of NFL quarterbacks.
- 6:17Speaker 4: But the other side of the coin is you are
- 6:20Speaker 4: talking about a 20 something person, you know, trying to
- 6:23Speaker 4: work through all this in a really public forum, you know,
- 6:29Speaker 4: When I was 26, screwing up at work, I didn't
- 6:32Speaker 4: have to explain to anybody except my sports editor and
- 6:36Speaker 4: the 10 people who wrote me letters to tell me
- 6:39Speaker 4: I sucked. But he's doing it in real time in
- 6:44Speaker 4: front of everybody. Look, that's part of the gig. You
- 6:49Speaker 4: sign up for that. And I get that. But we
- 6:52Speaker 4: are seeing a young guy really struggle with a very
- 6:57Speaker 4: public way of kind of learning the position. But I
- 7:03Speaker 4: think sometimes we look past the fact the simple solutions.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Are really the solutions.
- 7:10Speaker 4: We always want to complicate everything.
- 7:13Speaker 2: If he would fix his footwork and.
- 7:16Speaker 4: They would, you know, again, I'm going to, I'll collapse
- 7:22Speaker 4: on this hill, but if they would just put him
- 7:25Speaker 4: under center, His footwork is much better under center because
- 7:29Speaker 4: he has to think about playing quarterback. When he's in
- 7:33Speaker 4: the gun, it's high school again. Drop my arm angle,
- 7:38Speaker 4: fade away. You know, it's all about the athletic sort
- 7:42Speaker 4: of feel of playing quarterback. When he's under center, he
- 7:46Speaker 4: has to think about playing quarterback and going through his progressions.
- 7:52Speaker 4: But that's not what we do. in the modern NFL.
- 7:56Speaker 4: They all come up playing the gun and they all
- 7:58Speaker 4: want to leave them in the gun. But I learned
- 8:02Speaker 4: a lot from watching an awful lot of film with
- 8:04Speaker 4: Gary Kubiak and Mike Shanahan. And I believe if you
- 8:08Speaker 4: want to fix a quarterback, put them under center and
- 8:11Speaker 4: it gets fixed.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Great story today from you on Jalen Waddle. Is that today?
- 8:17Speaker 3: When did it first come out?
- 8:18Speaker 2: I think it was this morning.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Yeah, this morning. And I read through it. By the way,
- 8:23Speaker 3: how long does it take you to write an article
- 8:25Speaker 3: like that? Because that was longer than like a typical
- 8:27Speaker 3: midweek something or other.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm efficient, Moshe.
- 8:31Speaker 4: I get it done. It doesn't take me a ton
- 8:34Speaker 4: of time. It takes me longer to research and talk
- 8:36Speaker 4: to everybody.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Okay. That being said, Jeff, is there any threat? And
- 8:42Speaker 3: there's a number of different reasons, and I saw Sean
- 8:44Speaker 3: Payton's comments. Like, we need to fix a lot of things.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Is there any possibility as this season goes on, it's
- 8:49Speaker 3: still early, that this becomes a bust of an acquisition?
- 8:53Speaker 3: I mean, how much is on him? How much is
- 8:56Speaker 3: this on a putrid offense right now?
- 8:58Speaker 2: Well, he's an awfully good player.
- 9:00Speaker 4: You know, I just find if you got to hand
- 9:03Speaker 4: him the ball, hand him the ball.
- 9:05Speaker 2: You know what I mean? If you got to throw
- 9:07Speaker 2: it two feet, throw it two feet.
- 9:12Speaker 4: I was shocked, honestly, when I went through everything to
- 9:15Speaker 4: do this story.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I recharted all the plays. I talked to.
- 9:20Speaker 4: several coaches around the league to make sure I wasn't
- 9:23Speaker 4: seeing things. But the fact the only route in the
- 9:29Speaker 4: route tree where Bo Nix has like one of the
- 9:32Speaker 4: league's best QBR, which is a metric like passer rating,
- 9:38Speaker 4: but is on crossing routes. It's also the route they've
- 9:42Speaker 4: thrown the least this year. So I cannot understand why
- 9:47Speaker 4: the one thing your quarterback has done well is the
- 9:51Speaker 4: one thing you're not doing. Jalen Waddell has two catches
- 9:55Speaker 4: on crossing routes this year.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Is that because he's not throwing it?
- 9:58Speaker 4: I mean, I see an awful lot of plays where
- 10:03Speaker 4: there's no intermediate receiver, which I also don't get, and
- 10:08Speaker 4: I keep asking, and I don't get much of an answer.
- 10:11Speaker 4: But it's unrecognizable to me that maybe the best catcher
- 10:18Speaker 4: one of the best catch and run receivers in the
- 10:20Speaker 4: league has caught two passes on crossing routes this year.
- 10:25Speaker 4: And that just tells me how much is, is sort
- 10:28Speaker 4: of disjointed in the offense when they've got all these
- 10:32Speaker 4: numbers and they got a staff of, you know, 30
- 10:35Speaker 4: people breaking it down. It's impossible for me to think
- 10:41Speaker 4: they don't know. Bo Nix has a 98 QBR on
- 10:44Speaker 4: a crossing route and they won't throw them.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 10:48Speaker 6: That's crazy.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Jeff Legbaugh with us, all conversations with Leggy, brought to
- 10:51Speaker 5: you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, IBEW, Local 68.
- 10:55Speaker 5: Start with a job and with a career.
- 10:56Speaker 3: I bet you were up all night writing that article.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Probably took you all night long.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I take it easy. I take it slow.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Okay.
- 11:06Speaker 5: You know what's crazy, Leggy? We talked to Ian Furness yesterday.
- 11:08Speaker 5: He's a radio host up in Seattle. And he started
- 11:10Speaker 5: describing Seattle's team right now. And he goes, well, got
- 11:14Speaker 5: a quarterback that doesn't look very confident, that's turning the
- 11:17Speaker 5: ball over a lot in Sam Darnold. And they can't
- 11:19Speaker 5: run the football, and their defense gives up yards, but
- 11:21Speaker 5: not a lot of points. And he kept going, like,
- 11:24Speaker 5: point by point through the Seahawks, and.
- 11:26Speaker 6: They go, that's my team. That's the team that we
- 11:28Speaker 6: watch every week, too.
- 11:30Speaker 5: How similar are the Seahawks and the Broncos to each other?
- 11:33Speaker 4: Well, very similar, because they're both defensive-fueled teams right now.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Any success they've had.
- 11:40Speaker 4: I mean, the only reason the Broncos beat a terrible
- 11:43Speaker 4: Chargers team is on the last five possessions by the Chargers,
- 11:48Speaker 4: the defense allowed 19 yards in five possessions and turned
- 11:53Speaker 4: the ball over twice and forced a fourth down. You know,
- 11:58Speaker 4: they held on fourth down on another one. I mean,
- 12:02Speaker 4: so they're very similar right now.
- 12:04Speaker 6: Going back to that, though, Leggy, were you.
- 12:06Speaker 4: I will say Seattle has Jackson, Smith, and Jigba, so
- 12:09Speaker 4: that's a whole different other thing.
- 12:11Speaker 6: Were you blown away when Harbaugh went for it on
- 12:13Speaker 6: fourth down?
- 12:15Speaker 2: You know, I didn't understand it.
- 12:16Speaker 4: You know, I get the, you know, you're 0-4, who
- 12:19Speaker 4: cares type thing, you know, trying to spark the team.
- 12:23Speaker 4: But in that moment with the momentum at that point,
- 12:26Speaker 4: I mean, the game turned right there, you know, the
- 12:29Speaker 4: minute the Broncos held them. But I don't think enough
- 12:34Speaker 4: of us have talked about the last five Charger possessions,
- 12:38Speaker 4: the Broncos defense gave up 19 yards.
- 12:41Speaker 3: That's it.
- 12:43Speaker 4: And they gave the offense the ball inside the Chargers
- 12:46Speaker 4: 50 on all of those.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Yeah. That's why the defense won the game.
- 12:51Speaker 2: They've won them a lot of games.
- 12:54Speaker 6: I know.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:56Speaker 3: And whatever adjustments they need to make tonight, they could
- 12:58Speaker 3: be without three defensive backs tonight, three.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Starting defensive backs.
- 13:02Speaker 4: Smith and Jigba is going to be a problem. You know,
- 13:04Speaker 4: he's leading the NFL in yards per game. You know,
- 13:08Speaker 4: I think he's tied for the, the touchdown lead and
- 13:11Speaker 4: he's third in yards per target and everybody knows he's
- 13:15Speaker 4: getting the ball and it still doesn't matter.
- 13:17Speaker 5: Do you, could you apply like a Joker, you know,
- 13:21Speaker 5: when Jokic is on one of his heaters and the
- 13:24Speaker 5: opposing defense just goes, you know what, then score 50
- 13:26Speaker 5: tonight and I'm going to stop everybody else.
- 13:29Speaker 6: Could the Broncos do that with JSN?
- 13:30Speaker 3: Are you nuts? What?
- 13:32Speaker 4: You know, I think what, I think what you're trying
- 13:34Speaker 4: to do is, is I would expect them to bracket
- 13:36Speaker 4: them and try and limit, limit the damage. You know,
- 13:40Speaker 4: maybe he finishes with 130 yards, but no touchdowns. That's
- 13:45Speaker 4: kind of what you're looking for because he's getting the ball.
- 13:50Speaker 4: He wins the rep right at the snap. I mean,
- 13:53Speaker 4: his release is elite. You know, his footwork is unbelievable.
- 13:57Speaker 4: He leverages defensive backs with just the innate feel.
- 14:02Speaker 2: That the great receivers have.
- 14:04Speaker 4: So, yeah, I mean, it's, I think, you know, Like,
- 14:07Speaker 4: he has 145, but no touchdowns.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I think they'd be more than happy with a night
- 14:12Speaker 2: like that.
- 14:14Speaker 6: Jeff Legwald, ESPN.com, joins us every single Thursday. Always appreciate it, Leggy.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Thank you. Thanks, fellas. We'll see you.
- 14:20Speaker 6: Jeff Legwald.
- 14:21Speaker 5: Don't forget, Mile High postgame tonight after the Broncos-Seahawks. Instant reaction, analysis,
- 14:26Speaker 5: and plenty of opinions. LG, Vic, DMACC, myself. You'll watch
- 14:30Speaker 5: on Altitude TV or listen right here on 92.5.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Hey, Vic, I got a wonderful idea. How about we
- 14:35Speaker 3: just let him get 287 yards receiving and five touches,
- 14:39Speaker 3: but as long as nobody else gets anything. This was
- 14:41Speaker 3: Brett's idea. This was Brett's idea. Here, I got an idea, guys.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I got an idea. Let's let JSN have seven touchdowns.
- 14:49Speaker 3: In fact, let's not cover him at all. Let's just
- 14:52Speaker 3: go 11 on 10. Let him open. Let him do
- 14:57Speaker 3: whatever he wants. Did you even realize what comes out
- 15:01Speaker 3: of your face? Do you have any idea what you're saying?
- 15:05Speaker 6: Do you know how sports work? Yeah, I know how
- 15:07Speaker 6: sports work. No, apparently you don't, bro, because that was
- 15:09Speaker 6: really dumb.
- 15:10Speaker 5: My suggestion wasn't nobody stands in front of Jackson Smith
- 15:13Speaker 5: and Jigba. It would be, instead of selling out to
- 15:16Speaker 5: stop him, sell out to stop everything else and rely
- 15:19Speaker 5: more on one-on-one coverage.
- 15:21Speaker 6: Maybe let Jadé Barron have a crack at him. And
- 15:25Speaker 6: see if he's worth the salt.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Listen, man, on tomorrow night. Let's take their greatest weapon
- 15:30Speaker 3: and be really soft on him. Let's let Sidney Crosby
- 15:32Speaker 3: have a hat trick. But as long as nobody else
- 15:34Speaker 3: scores anything.
- 15:35Speaker 5: Why do you guys assume that if you don't have
- 15:38Speaker 5: him double covered every single play that he's going to
- 15:40Speaker 5: have 15 touchdowns tonight?
- 15:42Speaker 3: Because he's a stud.
- 15:43Speaker 2: I know.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Who cares?
- 15:48Speaker 6: By the way, did you ask Lakewald, is Jalen Waddle
- 15:51Speaker 6: a bust? Is that what you asked?
- 15:52Speaker 3: No, I said, what's the potential of this acquisition becoming
- 15:55Speaker 3: a bust as the season goes on? Because if you
- 15:57Speaker 3: read his article, it's very good. And it's not all
- 16:02Speaker 3: on Nixon, Payton, and everything else. It's also on Waddle
- 16:05Speaker 3: himself a little bit. You got to use him. You
- 16:08Speaker 3: got to use him. Yeah, but the first paragraph was
- 16:12Speaker 3: referring to the ripped off helmet and the frustration.
- 16:15Speaker 2: You know what's funny?
- 16:16Speaker 5: The Broncos, two of their first-round picks that they've used
- 16:18Speaker 5: over the last few years, one of them's on Jalen Waddell,
- 16:20Speaker 5: who they refused to get the football. The other one's
- 16:22Speaker 5: on Jadé Barron, who did not play at all up
- 16:24Speaker 5: until a week ago.
- 16:26Speaker 3: It's really weird.
- 16:27Speaker 6: Two first-rounders.
