- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Genesis 24, a wife for Isaac.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Abraham lived to be very old man.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: The Lord blessed him in everything that he did.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Abraham's oldest servant was in charge of everything that he owned.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Abraham called that servant to him and said, Put your hand under my leg.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Now I want you to make a promise to me.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Promise to me before the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not allow my son to marry a girl from Canaan.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: We live among these people, but don't let him marry a Canaanite girl.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Go back to my country, to my own people, and find a wife for my son Isaac.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Bring her here to him.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: The servant said to him, Maybe this woman will not want to come back with me to this land.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: If that happens, should I take your son with me to your homeland?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Abraham said to him, No, do not take my son to that place.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: The Lord, the God of heaven, brought me from my homeland to this place.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: That place was the home of my father and the home of my family, but he promised that this new land would belong to my family.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: May he send an angel before you so that you can choose a wife for my son.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: If the girl refuses to come with you, you will be free from this promise, but you must not take my son back to that place.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: So the servant put his hand under his master's leg and made the promise.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: The search begins.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: The servant took ten of Abraham's camels and left that place.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: The servant carried with him many different kinds of beautiful gifts.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: He went to Mesopotamia to Nahor's city.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: In the evening when the women come out to get the water, he went to the water well outside the city.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: He made the camels kneel down at the well.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: The servant said, Lord, you are the God of my master Abraham.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Please show your kindness to my master by helping me find a wife for his son Isaac.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Here I am standing by this well of water, and the young women from the city are coming out to get water.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: I will say to one of them, please put your jar down so that I can drink.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Let her answer show whether she is the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: If she says drink, I will also give water to your camels, I will know that she is the right one.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: It will be proof that you have shown kindness to my master.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: A wife is found.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Before the servant finished praying, a young woman named Rebecca came to the well.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: She was the daughter of Bethuel.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Bethuel was the son of Milka and Nahor, Abraham's brother.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Rebecca came to the well with her water jar on her shoulder.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: She was very pretty.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: She was a virgin.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: No man had ever had sexual relations with her.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: She went down to the well and filled her jar.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Then the servant ran to her and said, Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Rebecca quickly lowered the jar from her shoulder and she said Drink this, sir.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: As soon as she finished giving him something to drink, Rebecca said, I will also pour some water for your camels.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So Rebecca quickly poured all the water from her jar into the drinking trough for the camels.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Then she ran to the well to get more water, and she gave water to all of the camels.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: The servant quietly watched her.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: He wanted to make sure the Lord had given him an answer and had made his trip successful.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: After the camels finished drinking, he gave Rebecca a gold ring that weighed a quarter of an ounce.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: He also gave her two gold arm bracelets that weighed two ounces each.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: The servant asked, Who is your father?
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: And is there a place in your father's house for me and my men to sleep?
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Rebecca answered, My father is Bethuel, the son of Milka and Nahor.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Then she said, Yes, we have straw and other food for your camels and a place for you to sleep.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: The servant bowed and worshiped the Lord.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Praise be to the Lord the God of my master Abraham.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: The Lord has been kind and loyal to him by leading me to his own people.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Then Rebecca ran and told her family about these things.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: She had a brother named Laban.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: She told him what the man had said to her.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Laban was listening to her and when he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister's arms, he ran out to the well.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: There the man was, standing by the camels at the well.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Laban said, Sir, you are welcome to come in.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: You don't have to stand outside here.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: I have prepared a room for you to sleep in and a place for your camels.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: So Abraham's servant went into the house.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Laban unloaded his camels and gave them straw and feed.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Then he gave Abraham's servant water so that he and the men with him could wash their feet.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Laban then gave him food to eat, but the servant refused to eat.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: He said I will not eat until I have told you why I came.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: So Laban said, Then tell us.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Bargaining for Rebecca, the servant said, I am Abraham's servant.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: The Lord has greatly blessed my master in everything.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: My master has become a great man.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: The Lord has given him many flocks of sheep and herds of cattle.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: He has much silver and gold and many servants.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: He has many camels and donkeys.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Sarah was my master's wife.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: When she was very old she gave birth to a son, and my master has given everything he owns to that son.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: My master forced me to make a promise to him.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: He said to me, You must not allow my son to marry a girl from Canaan.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: We live among these people, but I don't want him to marry one of the Canaanite girls.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: So you must promise to go to my father's country, go to my family and choose a wife for my son.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: I said to my master, Maybe the woman will not come back to this place with me, but my master said to me, I serve the Lord, and he will send his angel with you and help you.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: You will find a wife for my son among my people there, but if you go to my father's country and they refuse to give you a wife for my son, you will be free from this promise.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Today I came to this well and I said, Lord, God of my master Abraham, please make my trip successful.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: I will stand by this well and wait for a young woman to come and get water.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Then I will say, Please give me water from your jar to drink, and the right woman will answer in a special way.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: She will say drink this water, I will also get water for your camels.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: That way I will know she is the one Lord has chosen for my master's son.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Before I finished praying, Rebecca came out to the well to get water.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: She had her water jar on her shoulder.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: As she went to get water from the well, I asked her to give me some water.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: She quickly lowered the jar from her shoulder and poured me some water.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Then she said Drink this and I'll get some water for your camels.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: So I drank the water and then she gave water to my camels.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: I asked her, Who is your father?
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: She answered My father is Bethuel, the son of Milka and Nahor.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Then I gave her the ring and bracelets for her arms.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: I praised the Lord, God of my master Abraham.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I thanked him for leading me straight to the granddaughter of my mother's master's brother.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Now tell me, will you be kind and loyal to my master and give him your daughter or will you refuse to give her to them?
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Tell me so that I will know what I should do.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Then Laban and Bethuel answered, We see that this is from the Lord, so there is nothing we can say to change it.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Here is Rebecca, take her and go, let her marry your master's son.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: That is what the Lord wants.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: When Abraham's servant heard this, he bowed to the ground before the Lord.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Then he gave Rebecca the gifts he had brought.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: He gave her beautiful clothes and gold and silver jewelry.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: He also gave expensive gifts to her mother and brother.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Then he and his men had something to eat and drink, and they spent the night here.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Early the next morning they got up and the servant said, Now we must go back to my master.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Rebecca's mother and her brother said Let Rebecca stay with us for a short time.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Let her stay with us ten days.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: After that she can go.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: But the servant said to them, Don't make me wait.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: The Lord has made my trip successful.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Now let me get back to my master.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Rebecca's mother and brother said, We will call Rebecca and ask her what she wants to do.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: They called her and asked her, Do you want to go with this man now?
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Rebecca said Yes, I will go.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: So they allowed Rebecca to go with Abraham's servant and his men.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Her nurse also went with them.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: While Rebecca was leaving, they said to her, Our sister, may you be the mother of millions of people, and may your descendants defeat their enemies and take their cities.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Then Rebecca and her nurse got on the camels and followed the servant and his men.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: So the servant took Rebecca and left.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Isaac had left Bir Lahiroi and was now living in the Negev.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: One evening he went out to the field to think.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: He looked up and saw the camels coming from far away.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Rebecca also looked and saw Isaac.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Then she jumped down from the camel and she said to the servant, Who is that young man walking in the field to meet us?
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: The servant said that is my master's son.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: So Rebecca covered her face with her veil.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: The servant told Isaac everything that happened.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Then Isaac brought the girl into his mother's tent.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Rebecca became his wife that day.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Isaac loved her very much, so he was comforted after his mother's death.
