- 0:25Speaker 1: I am never on time or have my stuff ready?
- 0:28Speaker 1: Harper with me today as my coals. What's up balls?
- 0:32Speaker 1: What's up? My boy? And you know what, I was
- 0:35Speaker 1: on time, I just didn't have my stuff, So you're
- 0:38Speaker 1: kind of right. I mean you did you There's a
- 0:40Speaker 1: couple of things you gotta, you know, get right here.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Um would a charge or not? The charge of the
- 0:45Speaker 1: USB microphone microphone? Yeah, yeah, you gotta get that. But
- 0:50Speaker 1: whatever the case, we're gonna get you set up. Today,
- 0:52Speaker 1: we got a special guest, Sees, a former teammate of mine,
- 0:56Speaker 1: a former irishman. We got Darryl dc Amble joining us
- 1:01Speaker 1: today on the show. DC. What's up baby? How you doing?
- 1:04Speaker 1: What's up? Peanut Man? Appreciate your own man. Love to
- 1:07Speaker 1: be on the show Man. You guys are funny as
- 1:09Speaker 1: all get out. Love it, love it to death, love
- 1:12Speaker 1: the banner you guys have it. M just glad to
- 1:14Speaker 1: be on um Man journey, right, That's pretty much what
- 1:18Speaker 1: it's all about. Notre Dame to Chicago with you, um,
- 1:25Speaker 1: watching you run around Peanut punching the hell out of everybody,
- 1:27Speaker 1: which is great. Um. And then to the Browns for
- 1:34Speaker 1: a season under Romeo Carneal won four games and that
- 1:37Speaker 1: was just horrible. That was just horrible. Yep. And then
- 1:43Speaker 1: to Tampa for a couple of seasons under Gruden UM
- 1:48Speaker 1: and then starting my trick with the Arena Football League
- 1:52Speaker 1: with the Orlando Predators for a season. By halfway through there,
- 1:55Speaker 1: Baltimore picked me up, so I got to put my
- 1:58Speaker 1: hand in the dirt again. Release once they after couple
- 2:01Speaker 1: couple of games. And then to Canada, where I think
- 2:05Speaker 1: right before this we were talking about my uh my
- 2:07Speaker 1: Kimbo Kimbo slice affinity, you know, so I had How
- 2:12Speaker 1: long was I was? How long was the one season
- 2:15Speaker 1: in a Great Cup with Mark Trust was the head
- 2:17Speaker 1: coach there? Um? It was. It was pretty good, pretty
- 2:21Speaker 1: pretty awesome. Different ball out there for no, not Toronto,
- 2:24Speaker 1: the Montreal Montreal the yeah yeah yeah played played Calgary
- 2:30Speaker 1: and the Great Cup and uh yeah and one and
- 2:34Speaker 1: I'll tell you what, those Montreal days were pretty pretty cool.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I think you got to get get use to that
- 2:39Speaker 1: French Canadian speech though. That's something else, that's a that's
- 2:42Speaker 1: a yeah. And they encourage you to try and speak
- 2:45Speaker 1: French right like the more you. Oh yeah, if if
- 2:48Speaker 1: you're coming from below the border and you're trying to
- 2:50Speaker 1: just roll roll with English, that's just not gonna work.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I mean, you're not You're not gonna get a sandwich
- 2:54Speaker 1: when you try to go to put you ain't gonna
- 2:56Speaker 1: get nothing. They're gonna they're gonna work with you. You
- 2:58Speaker 1: know a little bit. A little bit I've been in,
- 3:03Speaker 1: I got a little bit, you know what I mean.
- 3:04Speaker 1: A lot of the trainers, those part of their staff
- 3:07Speaker 1: kind of helped me out. Um. But I think the
- 3:09Speaker 1: one thing you just gotta be honest, man. You gotta
- 3:11Speaker 1: know your lane. As long as your honest, people will
- 3:14Speaker 1: work with you. If if you if you try to
- 3:15Speaker 1: do something they know you can't you listen, you don't
- 3:18Speaker 1: even stop that, just don't even go there, you know
- 3:20Speaker 1: what I mean? But uh yeah, as long as you honest,
- 3:22Speaker 1: you stay in your lane. People will work with you,
- 3:24Speaker 1: you know who as you went in a trail Rome.
- 3:27Speaker 1: So I went there for Kai you know Kaya Bearer.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Man, he got married in Montreal.
- 3:33Speaker 1: He was there for a very long time. So that
- 3:35Speaker 1: was one of my trips to Montreal. And it's funny.
- 3:37Speaker 1: So I took French in high school and so I
- 3:40Speaker 1: pick up the little things. I know how to read it,
- 3:42Speaker 1: I know how to say the little things. You know.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Jim Uppelle Roman talk a little bit here and there.
- 3:48Speaker 1: You attempt, but like he's saying though, like being a
- 3:51Speaker 1: brother from below the border and you come up there
- 3:54Speaker 1: like you must attempt to speak rich. You've got a shot.
- 3:58Speaker 1: It will not be happy with you because Montreal is
- 4:01Speaker 1: one of those like hard hard French Canadian lines, like
- 4:05Speaker 1: that's where it is, and they want you to speak
- 4:08Speaker 1: French there. They don't want you to be speaking English
- 4:11Speaker 1: in Montreal, so especially certain parts of it. So it's
- 4:14Speaker 1: really cool to experience that and hearing, you know, doing
- 4:17Speaker 1: some research on DC Man and hearing his adventures about
- 4:22Speaker 1: in Montreal, which to me, I think we really need
- 4:24Speaker 1: to jump into that. It's a lot more to unpack
- 4:26Speaker 1: in your one season in Montreal under coach Trestman, everything
- 4:31Speaker 1: that you got to do and experience there. I listened
- 4:34Speaker 1: to you on another podcast talk about, you know how
- 4:38Speaker 1: the videoographer guys like they didn't speak English and all
- 4:41Speaker 1: a sudden they quit and halfway through the season. Now
- 4:43Speaker 1: you step in and they didn't even know you could
- 4:45Speaker 1: do this. They were like, hey, you know, well you
- 4:47Speaker 1: were already doing some my T stuff once you got
- 4:49Speaker 1: off of work, and you're like, hey, maybe I could
- 4:51Speaker 1: you know, fill in this board for you and they're like, nah,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you just focus on football, and it's okay, go ahead,
- 4:57Speaker 1: felt and then eventually they came back to you. Yeah.
- 5:00Speaker 1: The crazy thing is when you have discriminal employees, especially
- 5:03Speaker 1: in that whole it videography world, it's just not a
- 5:06Speaker 1: good look for the team. So, you know, I kind
- 5:08Speaker 1: of figured it like this, Well, I'm going to be
- 5:10Speaker 1: watching film anyway, just as all the other you know,
- 5:13Speaker 1: my teammates. Well, like, you know, hey, man, so I'm
- 5:16Speaker 1: a few extra Canadians so I can get this done
- 5:18Speaker 1: for us and then make some highlight clips on the way.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I mean, it's really just apply, just applying yourself, man,
- 5:24Speaker 1: trying to make extra buck and you know, make make
- 5:27Speaker 1: sure making sure that everybody else's uh you know, comes
- 5:30Speaker 1: along with you with respect to that. So before you
- 5:33Speaker 1: making an extra buck though, yeah, I mean it was
- 5:37Speaker 1: like it was like unpaid and stuff. Right. He was
- 5:39Speaker 1: doing it just to do it to kind of help
- 5:41Speaker 1: everybody else out. Well, yeah, I mean to start, but
- 5:44Speaker 1: then after a while, like it just you know, you
- 5:47Speaker 1: gotta gotta gotta slide a little bit of extra something,
- 5:50Speaker 1: you know what I mean, because it's just the time, man.
- 5:51Speaker 1: You know this, and you know, people like if you
- 5:54Speaker 1: if you, if you study and taping, like you're like
- 5:56Speaker 1: all right, man, like I'm trying to to study my opponent.
- 6:00Speaker 1: But at the same time, I got to get this
- 6:01Speaker 1: ready for like everybody else, you know what I mean,
- 6:03Speaker 1: Like it's the time spend value received that this just
- 6:08Speaker 1: got has to has to line up, so um, and
- 6:11Speaker 1: they didn't slipping a few extra dollars which was cool. Um.
- 6:14Speaker 1: But yeah, well a lot of it was really fun. Though.
- 6:17Speaker 1: When did you get started? I know, because you had
- 6:19Speaker 1: you had trust, when I had trust. When he was
- 6:20Speaker 1: in Chicago, What time would you guys start your day?
- 6:23Speaker 1: The schedule is a little bit similar to like NFL ball.
- 6:27Speaker 1: You're up there early, you eat in the morning, you
- 6:29Speaker 1: kind of go through your walk throughs throughout the day,
- 6:30Speaker 1: and then you go and you have your practice. It's
- 6:32Speaker 1: just that it finishes a lot, a lot sooner than
- 6:35Speaker 1: than NFL ball does. So he tried to be as
- 6:38Speaker 1: with us, but it didn't. It didn't work. It So, yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 1: ro it was not Oh what did he drove with?
- 6:44Speaker 1: You got try the same type of thing happen. So
- 6:47Speaker 1: now you know how you do one on ones the
- 6:50Speaker 1: whole time, right, you know, you do walk through and
- 6:52Speaker 1: then you have like scout one, scout two, scout team whatever.
- 6:56Speaker 1: We would do scout team, but it was a walking
- 6:59Speaker 1: scout team. So you never saw the Yeah, you never
- 7:04Speaker 1: saw the plays from the offense full speed. It was
- 7:08Speaker 1: at a walkthrough pace. And I remember Lands and I
- 7:11Speaker 1: were like, hey, can we can we get these plays
- 7:14Speaker 1: a little bit faster because come Sunday, they're gonna be
- 7:17Speaker 1: running this goal route, They're gonna be running this smash
- 7:19Speaker 1: or this high loves like they're gonna do it fast.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Like I can. I can defend this all day. I'm
- 7:24Speaker 1: all pro in a walkthrough, but I need to see
- 7:27Speaker 1: this faster. But we literally would practice full speed ones
- 7:32Speaker 1: on one. So it was a training camp practice. Every
- 7:34Speaker 1: single day it was just our offense, number one offense
- 7:38Speaker 1: versus number one defense. I couldn't tell you how many
- 7:40Speaker 1: times I knew our own offenses, our offensive plays, because
- 7:45Speaker 1: we went against them every team period, every single day.
- 7:48Speaker 1: They didn't work out. I mean, it's cool in Canada,
- 7:51Speaker 1: you know AFL, you know Canadian CFL. Excuse me, but
- 7:54Speaker 1: it just how we did things. Nah, man, it didn't
- 7:57Speaker 1: really work out for us. When did you know, like
- 8:00Speaker 1: it was time to be done. I knew you're making
- 8:02Speaker 1: you're making edits, you're doing all these films, But when
- 8:04Speaker 1: did you know it was time to be done? Like
- 8:06Speaker 1: you know, and I think I've I think I've got
- 8:08Speaker 1: my last sack. It's time to hang these clicks up.
- 8:11Speaker 1: So once I was done with Canada and after that
- 8:15Speaker 1: that first season, came back to the States and I
- 8:19Speaker 1: was just kind of mouling around for a while. Like
- 8:21Speaker 1: my my wife was, you know, an investment banker with
- 8:23Speaker 1: City Banks. She had just transferred from Chase in Chicago. Um,
- 8:27Speaker 1: we're in Philly. We had no family here, you know,
- 8:29Speaker 1: in pa um and my son was my son was
- 8:33Speaker 1: my son was as I was to stay at home dad.
- 8:35Speaker 1: And you know, my wife came home one day and
- 8:38Speaker 1: she was like, listen, you know, like this is all
- 8:40Speaker 1: great for you to be, you know, with your son,
- 8:43Speaker 1: with your boy. Look, I love it. I love the
- 8:45Speaker 1: fact that you are embracing fatherhood. But you know, she
- 8:49Speaker 1: said like, hey, you know what, there's more to you
- 8:51Speaker 1: than this. You know, there's there's more to you than this. Um,
- 8:55Speaker 1: maybe maybe reach out to your coaches, maybe, you know,
- 8:57Speaker 1: ask around. Maybe maybe you can get into coaching. Maybe
- 9:00Speaker 1: that's like your next deal. Um. So I reached out
- 9:02Speaker 1: to Trestman and he was still with it with Montreal. UM.
- 9:07Speaker 1: I said, listen, you know, based upon the skill set
- 9:09Speaker 1: that you know, I've showed out in Canada. UM, do
- 9:13Speaker 1: you know anybody in the industry, you have any friends,
- 9:15Speaker 1: any connections something. I'm just looking for the next step here. Um.
- 9:18Speaker 1: He said. I have a friend at NFL Film's name
- 9:20Speaker 1: is Greg Cosell. He's the executive producer for ESPN NFL Matchup. UM,
- 9:25Speaker 1: I can't promise you anything. I talked to him. Go
- 9:28Speaker 1: over there to Mount Laurel, NFL Films headquarters and you know,
- 9:34Speaker 1: have a conversation, be yourself. Probably shaved the Afro Kimbo
- 9:39Speaker 1: slice thing before you do that? That would that would
- 9:41Speaker 1: be good? Um? I was like sure. Um. I ended
- 9:45Speaker 1: up showing up an NFL film suited and booted as
- 9:49Speaker 1: in the lower level atrium, um and waiting for care
- 9:53Speaker 1: then and Jaluci now Rodgers, who is kind of like
- 9:57Speaker 1: the production coordinator here in the NFL film on the
- 10:01Speaker 1: end the producers department. She was upstairs. First person I
- 10:04Speaker 1: meet with Steve Sable. He comes to the double doors
- 10:07Speaker 1: to the lower level cafe and he's like, hey, are
- 10:10Speaker 1: you waiting for someone? I was like, yeah, I'm here
- 10:14Speaker 1: to meet with Greg Cosell. He's like, we'll get up
- 10:17Speaker 1: there sooner or later, but let me take you on
- 10:19Speaker 1: a tour. But I'm like, but Kara's coming to take me,
- 10:23Speaker 1: but don't worry about it, so Joe, she'll catch up.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Though I did that, you can't even like whatever you
- 10:32Speaker 1: wants me to do, I'm about to do. So. I mean,
- 10:34Speaker 1: he took me everywhere. He told me about all the
- 10:36Speaker 1: art work that he himself created that's littered all over
- 10:40Speaker 1: the walls here in the NFL films. It's it's pretty amazing.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Um took them to the studio, my audio department. Um,
- 10:47Speaker 1: they have like their own like they have an orchestra here,
- 10:49Speaker 1: their own orchestra here. It's crazy, um feel like background
- 10:53Speaker 1: music like all that. Oh yeah, they create their compose
- 10:55Speaker 1: their own music here. Um. So took me on a
- 10:59Speaker 1: full fledged tour of NFL Films facilities outside inside the
- 11:02Speaker 1: whole nine. I end up in the office with Greg
- 11:05Speaker 1: co Cell and he's literally just picking my brain on tape.
- 11:09Speaker 1: All twenty two tape. That's all this man does all day,
- 11:12Speaker 1: every day, five in the morning to seven eight at
- 11:16Speaker 1: pm and night he is all twenty two tricked out.
- 11:19Speaker 1: That's just still um picks my brain about football knowledge,
- 11:23Speaker 1: you know, defensive line knowledge. Up. I met um Pat
- 11:26Speaker 1: kellerher and Ross Ketever here they are the two, the
- 11:29Speaker 1: two and headed dragon here at the NFL Films now
- 11:31Speaker 1: the new Steve and then Sable um if you will,
- 11:34Speaker 1: since they're passing um. And it was just natural, man.
- 11:39Speaker 1: It was almost like I found, you know, I just
- 11:40Speaker 1: I found my new team. And you guys know how
- 11:43Speaker 1: it is, once you're done playing ball, you just you
- 11:45Speaker 1: just searching for the next that next locker room experience
- 11:47Speaker 1: to kind of like you know, grandfather's you in. So
- 11:51Speaker 1: when you said he was picking your brain about tape, like,
- 11:54Speaker 1: what does what does that even mean? Like? I get
- 11:56Speaker 1: picking a brain about football, Like what does d line do?
- 11:58Speaker 1: What was a quarterback? Due? I get that, But how
- 12:01Speaker 1: do you pick someone's brain about like tape? What does
- 12:03Speaker 1: that even Literally literally feet kicked up on the desk,
- 12:08Speaker 1: big monitor on his wall, all to all twenty two rolling.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Hey tell me about this, uh this smash concept over here.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Hey tell me about you know, covering three boundary lock
- 12:17Speaker 1: that's going on down here here? Tell me about you know,
- 12:20Speaker 1: the inside blitz. And I'm sitting me. Were looking at
- 12:22Speaker 1: this man like, No, who knows ball? He's just in
- 12:26Speaker 1: the office, Like he's like he knows ball. He's just
- 12:29Speaker 1: in the crazy thing. He's like he never played football,
- 12:31Speaker 1: but he's just like a student of the game. It's
- 12:34Speaker 1: like an intellectual exercise for this man. Like every the
- 12:38Speaker 1: fact that he had, you know, he had a wealth
- 12:39Speaker 1: of football knowledge and he was speaking my language. You know.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I appreciated that, and I kind of feel like, yeah,
- 12:45Speaker 1: I think I can do this. This is this is
- 12:47Speaker 1: where I need to be. So earned met. No, they
- 12:51Speaker 1: didn't hire me on hire me on the spot. Like,
- 12:54Speaker 1: they waited about a week or so and then they
- 12:56Speaker 1: called me in to get an internship opportunity. So that
- 12:58Speaker 1: first year, came in learned behind a guy by the
- 13:01Speaker 1: name of Nick Kehoe who was the graphic producer for
- 13:04Speaker 1: an NFL matchup. UM picked his brain every single day
- 13:08Speaker 1: until the following season when they hired me on as
- 13:10Speaker 1: a seasonal and I took over the range for him
- 13:12Speaker 1: and match up for like three years before they made
- 13:14Speaker 1: me full time. Got you? So when you finally got
- 13:17Speaker 1: the job, though, how was it going from professional athlete
- 13:20Speaker 1: to an unpaid intern? How was it? How was that transition? Oh? Yeah,
- 13:24Speaker 1: I mean, well, not making no money is not really fun.
- 13:27Speaker 1: But at the same time, it's it's it's uh, it's
- 13:30Speaker 1: it's the learning experience. You know. I kind of think,
- 13:32Speaker 1: I just you gotta put in its sweat equity, you
- 13:35Speaker 1: know what I mean, You gotta put it, you gotta
- 13:36Speaker 1: put it, put it in terms like that. So I
- 13:39Speaker 1: was learning UM and while I was in here was
- 13:42Speaker 1: just it was just a matter of the curiosity, just
- 13:45Speaker 1: like all twenty two was an intellectual exercise for Greg.
- 13:48Speaker 1: It's just like you know, when you're a player, and
- 13:49Speaker 1: you go to a new team, you gotta you gotta
- 13:52Speaker 1: learn the roads, you gotta learn the plays, you gotta
- 13:53Speaker 1: learn the ins and out to the of the defense
- 13:55Speaker 1: so that you can find where it is your best
- 13:57Speaker 1: suited and how it is you can you know, activate forwards.
- 14:00Speaker 1: So you know, for me, I was like, well, you
- 14:02Speaker 1: know what you know, I'm a computer science you know,
- 14:05Speaker 1: software programming engineering guy, and let me go talk to
- 14:08Speaker 1: people I know that speak my same language in this world.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Let me go to the engineering side talk to them.
- 14:12Speaker 1: They showed me how things the back end and the
- 14:14Speaker 1: front end works with with with within the realm of
- 14:18Speaker 1: TAKEE masters and lto and like how the offline side
- 14:21Speaker 1: of the building communicates with the on side online side
- 14:24Speaker 1: of the building, which none of the producers really know
- 14:26Speaker 1: that more do their care um. But to me, that's
- 14:30Speaker 1: where I kind of found my niche and um and
- 14:34Speaker 1: also too, it goes a long way treating people how
- 14:40Speaker 1: you how they deserve to be treated, from low level
- 14:44Speaker 1: groundskeeper to VP of the organization. I just kind of
- 14:48Speaker 1: kept that mindset as well. And there is nothing that
- 14:52Speaker 1: I couldn't ask anyone. I could I go into anyone's room, office, meeting,
- 14:57Speaker 1: you know what I mean, And they would just welcoming
- 14:59Speaker 1: U and and and and and willing to to to
- 15:02Speaker 1: give me as much knowledgeist you know, I crave, so
- 15:05Speaker 1: you know, I use that, applied that and you know,
- 15:09Speaker 1: three Emmys and a couple promotions later here I am
- 15:15Speaker 1: em Yeah, I got a few of them. So it
- 15:17Speaker 1: really is a team game though, right, like taking the
- 15:20Speaker 1: team from playing football, you know, the D line defense
- 15:24Speaker 1: or whatever, and then you transition at kind of in
- 15:27Speaker 1: this new professional this new transition um and and broadcasting
- 15:31Speaker 1: right or excuse me, production. I've gone to a couple
- 15:35Speaker 1: of broadcast boot camps and I don't really talk about
- 15:38Speaker 1: like the on camera you know thing for talent. I'm
- 15:41Speaker 1: always there to just let people know and let players know, like, hey,
- 15:44Speaker 1: there's another side of this thing that where where you
- 15:46Speaker 1: can really add in and in amazing ways, which is
- 15:50Speaker 1: the back end being an editor, being a graphics producer,
- 15:54Speaker 1: you know, um, being a director, that like there's there's
- 15:58Speaker 1: there's so much application based upon our careers that we
- 16:03Speaker 1: can add into that that's so different than just the
- 16:06Speaker 1: normal producer who's lean has always been filming the whole lot,
- 16:10Speaker 1: you know, but at the end of the day though,
- 16:11Speaker 1: and we talked about that last night though about just
- 16:14Speaker 1: you know, some for the kids who never make it
- 16:17Speaker 1: to the NFL and they think their life is always like, oh,
- 16:20Speaker 1: I didn't make it to the league, but you can
- 16:21Speaker 1: still do or have a job around football that keeps
- 16:25Speaker 1: you connected to the game. Absolute producer, a scout, a coach,
- 16:32Speaker 1: a director like you said, So, yeah, I think that's um,
- 16:35Speaker 1: it's just way more. There's so many more ways to
- 16:38Speaker 1: be a part of the game without actually being on
- 16:40Speaker 1: the field, tackling and playing the game. And I don't
- 16:43Speaker 1: think as young people, especially as African Americans, like we
- 16:47Speaker 1: only see the only way to get there. We gotta
- 16:49Speaker 1: be the guy. We got to be the man. We
- 16:51Speaker 1: don't actually talking encourage enough of our young our young
- 16:55Speaker 1: people in this world, especially in America, that I mean,
- 16:58Speaker 1: you can still do other things than of yourself, whether
- 17:00Speaker 1: it's being a cameraman, working the chains, being in upstairs,
- 17:05Speaker 1: involved with different organizations. I think that's so cool and
- 17:09Speaker 1: so true. I don't think we talk enough about that.
- 17:11Speaker 1: I mean, it's my question for you, DC. Yeah, my
- 17:14Speaker 1: question for you, DC is like, and we all struggle
- 17:18Speaker 1: with this, how do you change that perception of everybody
- 17:21Speaker 1: else that I'm more than just the athlete or I'm
- 17:24Speaker 1: just an athlete in this space. I think the way
- 17:29Speaker 1: the way that's worked for me has been basically sticking
- 17:33Speaker 1: to my truth, which is, you know, embracing the fact
- 17:36Speaker 1: that I'm an athlete and that I am set apart
- 17:38Speaker 1: in that way. You know, my eyes over the course
- 17:40Speaker 1: of my career have been my lens if we if
- 17:43Speaker 1: we talk about production, you know what I mean. But
- 17:45Speaker 1: I've seen a lot of stories. I have, you know,
- 17:48Speaker 1: a knowledge base and the skill set that's that's applicable
- 17:50Speaker 1: in this field in a much different way than someone again,
- 17:53Speaker 1: like we said before, who's never played the game and
- 17:55Speaker 1: who's only been about film and understanding the nuance they're in. So,
- 17:59Speaker 1: you know, for the pe Nut Tillmans, for the Roman
- 18:02Speaker 1: Harpers of the world, you guys are so unique because
- 18:04Speaker 1: you guys have seen the game and game in such
- 18:06Speaker 1: a way that no producer on this side of the
- 18:09Speaker 1: fence has ever seen it like you. You you have
- 18:12Speaker 1: been using your lenses and capturing footage. You know what
- 18:14Speaker 1: You're what your what your writtiness for years, you know,
- 18:17Speaker 1: at a high level, bringing that to this side, like
- 18:20Speaker 1: people minds will be blown like you have no idea,
- 18:24Speaker 1: you know. So that's that's how how it worked for me,
- 18:28Speaker 1: and I think for for any you know, player that
- 18:31Speaker 1: is done with the game to to to understand and
- 18:34Speaker 1: know that you know, hey, it's not over. You can
- 18:37Speaker 1: just take everything that you have experienced, hands on experience
- 18:40Speaker 1: handing the dirt or you know, backpedaling into the backfield
- 18:44Speaker 1: and bringing that to this side of the fence. So
- 18:46Speaker 1: I'm jealous that you got emmies. You got three emmies.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I want to emmy listen. I promise you you keep
- 18:52Speaker 1: doing this, man, You're gonna be you can be just
- 18:54Speaker 1: like Dave Bennins and you too. So you got you
- 18:58Speaker 1: got three of them, don't you. M Yes? So what
- 19:01Speaker 1: are your Emmy's in US best sports serialized documentaries? Two
- 19:06Speaker 1: of them for Hard Knocks, one for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
- 19:09Speaker 1: one for the Houston Texans UM and then our NFL
- 19:13Speaker 1: hundred UM production. I think, well, during that season a
- 19:18Speaker 1: few few years ago, like myself however, really produced there
- 19:22Speaker 1: are we have something like twenty some odd thirty producers
- 19:26Speaker 1: in the house to cut that basically taking like seven
- 19:28Speaker 1: eight hundred hours of footage and dueling it down to
- 19:31Speaker 1: the best hour of television. Each training a camp for
- 19:35Speaker 1: whatever hard knocks, you know, team, we're focusing on what
- 19:39Speaker 1: it is seven Yeah, what do you say? That's how much? Yeah?
- 19:42Speaker 1: We're basically like when when everybody's at home and that
- 19:45Speaker 1: Tuesday night and they were watching that Best one hour. Yeah,
- 19:48Speaker 1: on Monday it started out, it's like seven hundred and
- 19:51Speaker 1: fifty hours of footage, but do you have to watch?
- 19:54Speaker 1: So y'all divide it all up, like if you it's
- 19:57Speaker 1: twenty of us, we got seven hundred hours of film.
- 20:00Speaker 1: How much film do I get? How much film do
- 20:02Speaker 1: you get? How much film does wrong get? So? I
- 20:04Speaker 1: mean so it's it's it's it's not even it's like
- 20:06Speaker 1: all hands on deck, you know. And you also think
- 20:08Speaker 1: you got your your twenty head producers, you know or
- 20:12Speaker 1: twenty harman is you have your twenty head producers. When
- 20:15Speaker 1: you have assistance production assistance, they're all helping the law
- 20:19Speaker 1: footage of one you know what it is that you're
- 20:21Speaker 1: looking at, right, and then you get those subclips and
- 20:23Speaker 1: you can put that into the best one hour story
- 20:25Speaker 1: starting from that seven fifty and that happens seven days
- 20:29Speaker 1: a week for seven straight weeks. So like this it's
- 20:32Speaker 1: almost like a training camp experience here on the editor
- 20:35Speaker 1: on the production side, just to get to the best
- 20:37Speaker 1: one hour for you know, public consumption at home. And
- 20:41Speaker 1: it's all about are you guys trying to tell a
- 20:43Speaker 1: specific story or do you kind of just like, well,
- 20:46Speaker 1: wherever this journey kind of takes is we just know that.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Well that's the thing. It's like you glory ever changed
- 20:52Speaker 1: from week one to week two in the training camp,
- 20:54Speaker 1: were like, dude, we didn't even know we had this.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Now we got to really give more of this. Well,
- 21:00Speaker 1: here's the thing. It's just like this this past you
- 21:02Speaker 1: know someone we did with, you know, Detroit Lions. So
- 21:05Speaker 1: like my first few weeks, i had Dan Campbell, Aaron Glenn,
- 21:10Speaker 1: Brad Holmes. Right, those are those are my characters, right,
- 21:13Speaker 1: So hey, DC, you're a sign of these guys cover
- 21:17Speaker 1: whatever it is that you think is best. Now. We
- 21:19Speaker 1: have production meetings every day, like and we talk about notes.
- 21:22Speaker 1: We talked about different things that we everyone saw and
- 21:25Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, okay, cool, let me write this down
- 21:27Speaker 1: that was on this tape. Oh this this assistant saw this,
- 21:31Speaker 1: um while I was loving and saw this, and then
- 21:33Speaker 1: you put your best stories together for those characters and
- 21:36Speaker 1: it's all comprised into that best hour, you know, for
- 21:39Speaker 1: for Joe fan at home with the best case scenario
- 21:43Speaker 1: of just showcasing coaches. Dan Campbell has a huge personality.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Not former teammate in New Worth and he was awesome
- 21:49Speaker 1: and he coached there. He was the last couple of
- 21:51Speaker 1: years before he got this Detroit job. Age was a
- 21:54Speaker 1: former teammate of mine. He has a great personality. To
- 21:57Speaker 1: hear him and do Staley going back and forth, I'm like,
- 22:00Speaker 1: they're gonna each one of these guys gonna get a
- 22:02Speaker 1: new coaching job off this hard Knocks. It was like
- 22:04Speaker 1: the best job interview that you could ever do. And
- 22:08Speaker 1: I was so appreciative of it because everybody has this
- 22:10Speaker 1: negative opinion about Detroit, and after you watched two episodes,
- 22:13Speaker 1: you're like, man, I love this coaching staff. Oh yeah,
- 22:16Speaker 1: unique case of all these former players that are now
- 22:19Speaker 1: on the staff. I thought it was amazing that you
- 22:21Speaker 1: guys are able to pull this off, and the way
- 22:23Speaker 1: you showcased it and packaged it was beautifully dub. I
- 22:26Speaker 1: gotta ask you a question. Room is Dan Campbell really
- 22:30Speaker 1: liked that in like in real life because he really
- 22:32Speaker 1: liked that. Like, I just gotta ask you because that
- 22:35Speaker 1: man was first on who swore was a man connected
- 22:46Speaker 1: this one No just one piece, you know, like why
- 22:52Speaker 1: why bro it is so number one? He kind of
- 22:56Speaker 1: is like that man. He's kind of a meathead that
- 22:58Speaker 1: has learned to be able to manage a game. When
- 23:02Speaker 1: he got the interim job in Miami, did a great
- 23:05Speaker 1: job of really turning them around. Then he came back
- 23:08Speaker 1: to us and continue to coach and and I think
- 23:11Speaker 1: because he's been around so many great coaches in his
- 23:13Speaker 1: past that he has learned what it takes on that
- 23:16Speaker 1: side of it. But he deep doubt he is a meathead.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Like and I don't think that, lady. I think everybody
- 23:24Speaker 1: just and it respects and he's just like I mean,
- 23:26Speaker 1: he's kind of gonna just be this meat head of
- 23:28Speaker 1: a head coach. And he's willing to lift weights or
- 23:31Speaker 1: like he says, bite ankles or whatever else. I think
- 23:34Speaker 1: he really truly believes those things when he says that.
- 23:36Speaker 1: I don't think he's like just saying it to get attention. Now.
- 23:39Speaker 1: I think that's who he is here in the division.
- 23:43Speaker 1: I don't want to see him win, but after watching
- 23:46Speaker 1: Hard Knocks, I will say I will probably admit this.
- 23:50Speaker 1: I want to see him do well. The heartbreak on
- 23:53Speaker 1: some of these guys is awful. Um, it's really really tough, man.
- 23:58Speaker 1: And that maybe so you can talk about DC is
- 24:01Speaker 1: uh maybe some of the benefits of positives from young journey.
- 24:04Speaker 1: You know, it's gone from team to team, from league
- 24:07Speaker 1: the league. What is that Has it had had any
- 24:09Speaker 1: kind of impact in your current journey now that you're
- 24:13Speaker 1: I think even when I even when I take like
- 24:16Speaker 1: NFL films into you know, um, when when I put
- 24:19Speaker 1: it into put it into perspective, Um, there's highs and
- 24:23Speaker 1: lows and everything fellas I mean, you know that, Um,
- 24:26Speaker 1: especially when it comes to me being a journeyman just
- 24:28Speaker 1: kind of you know, living out of a bag for
- 24:30Speaker 1: the majority of my career. Um. You know, after you
- 24:34Speaker 1: get let go a couple of times, um, and I'm
- 24:38Speaker 1: I'm a faith based man. It's it got to the
- 24:41Speaker 1: point where I was like, you know what, whoever guy
- 24:43Speaker 1: wants me, that's what I'm gonna be. And when I
- 24:45Speaker 1: settle in and I find you know that that team
- 24:48Speaker 1: that like you know, I'm I'm there for the long haul.
- 24:52Speaker 1: You know the door won't be you know, shutting my face,
- 24:54Speaker 1: or I won't be closed. You know I'll be there
- 24:57Speaker 1: forever and always so the check. We gonna take a
- 25:00Speaker 1: little break right now when we come back. We got
- 25:02Speaker 1: some quick hitter questions for him, all right, if we
- 25:07Speaker 1: want to welcome you guys back me my co host,
- 25:10Speaker 1: pe Nut Tilman or some people call him Charles, but
- 25:12Speaker 1: I don't know many people that call him that. Pet
- 25:15Speaker 1: Tilman on the other side, and our guests for the day,
- 25:18Speaker 1: Darryl Campbell ak a d C DC man. We got
- 25:22Speaker 1: some quick hitters for you. Are you ready? I am
- 25:25Speaker 1: all right? All right. Number one, I want to know
- 25:28Speaker 1: your favorite moment of your playing career. Favorite moment two
- 25:35Speaker 1: thousand and four, two thousand and five. Minimally, I'm in
- 25:38Speaker 1: the middle of a game. I can't recall who we're playing,
- 25:41Speaker 1: but I got Lands Brig, I got Hunter hilen Meyer,
- 25:45Speaker 1: and I got Brian Urlacker behind me, and I totally
- 25:51Speaker 1: totally forget to play. Totally brain gone out the window
- 25:59Speaker 1: looking back. All I know is black come up to
- 26:03Speaker 1: me and say, listen, big dog, don't boy. I'll make
- 26:06Speaker 1: you right. Shit, that's it. Favorite player ever. True leadership,
- 26:12Speaker 1: truly true leadership. The boy said, I forgot to play.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Look back like, hey, what's the play. Don't worry about
- 26:23Speaker 1: a dog I got you. Just do what you want.
- 26:24Speaker 1: But yeah, that's confidence. I got it. So if you
- 26:27Speaker 1: weren't a producer, here's here's mine. If you weren't a
- 26:29Speaker 1: producing what other career or professional would you be doing
- 26:31Speaker 1: right now? I would be an it professional. Um. I
- 26:35Speaker 1: would have a small cubicle almost Prairie dog style, popping
- 26:40Speaker 1: up from it, and I would probably be doing either
- 26:44Speaker 1: building laptops or doing some type of NSA or STP
- 26:49Speaker 1: building apps. That would probably be the career that I
- 26:54Speaker 1: would choose. Who's on your personal Mount Rushmore? People who
- 26:58Speaker 1: have helped you be successful in life as it as
- 27:01Speaker 1: a whole. Uh you get for remember because we don't
- 27:06Speaker 1: all know how many people. He might not know how
- 27:08Speaker 1: many mount rushmore. So so I'm showing you four. So uh,
- 27:13Speaker 1: I start off with my mom. H she would she
- 27:16Speaker 1: would be the number one. Um, because I watched that
- 27:21Speaker 1: woman you know, uh work her tail off when my
- 27:26Speaker 1: dad left when I was three to provide you know,
- 27:29Speaker 1: rough and over my head and and make sure I
- 27:31Speaker 1: went to college. And you know, she was the one
- 27:34Speaker 1: that put in like two hundred light bulbs so I
- 27:36Speaker 1: didn't fall asleep after football practice and not want to
- 27:39Speaker 1: do my homework. You know what I mean? She was
- 27:40Speaker 1: always there. Some mom's number one, Uh my number two,
- 27:45Speaker 1: I would say, Um, honestly, I say my number two
- 27:51Speaker 1: would would be a compendium of all of the players
- 27:57Speaker 1: I had a chance to to to play with. Uh.
- 28:00Speaker 1: The Tommy Harris is in Chicago, you know who you know,
- 28:05Speaker 1: just watching him body control, just kind of just just
- 28:11Speaker 1: an absolute beast. Um. Tank Johnson's you, peanut. You know
- 28:15Speaker 1: how hard you work every People don't realize how you know,
- 28:18Speaker 1: I can't curse on this podcast, how f and hard
- 28:21Speaker 1: you worked your whole career. Man, It's it's it's real.
- 28:24Speaker 1: I've said this before another meetings we've been on two
- 28:26Speaker 1: Like I look up to you man. Um. You know,
- 28:29Speaker 1: um the Orphans Roys of the world, Um, the Chris Hovans, um,
- 28:38Speaker 1: the Kevin Carter's everybody, every great player that poured into
- 28:42Speaker 1: me along my journey to just you know, do the
- 28:46Speaker 1: very best I possibly can. Um. So that might be several,
- 28:50Speaker 1: but I'll just package them into one um Um. I
- 28:53Speaker 1: think my third would be, you know, being able to
- 28:57Speaker 1: come here and applying knowledge learned from guys like you know,
- 29:01Speaker 1: Grego Sell. Um. I'd say Grego sell was a was
- 29:04Speaker 1: a really big help. Because it's one thing to be
- 29:07Speaker 1: a player, like a defensive lineman. You know, understanding the
- 29:11Speaker 1: full breadth of work as it as it pertains to
- 29:13Speaker 1: put my hand in the dirt is one thing. But
- 29:15Speaker 1: you know, if if if I'm honest, his knowledge base
- 29:20Speaker 1: was about the game and its entirety. You know what
- 29:22Speaker 1: I mean, if you were to ask me like like
- 29:25Speaker 1: what was a smash concept or you know, fire x
- 29:29Speaker 1: blitz and what how how linebackers that I would have
- 29:32Speaker 1: no idea. I just know that right here I got
- 29:34Speaker 1: to I got this be yeap, I gotta jet it
- 29:36Speaker 1: and I gotta make some plays, you know what I'm saying.
- 29:38Speaker 1: You know, if you if we're talking like boundary, cover three,
- 29:41Speaker 1: lock or cover three in general and all the like,
- 29:43Speaker 1: you know, quarters, coverage, quarter, quarter, half, all that type
- 29:46Speaker 1: of stuff, I ain't had no that wasn't in my playbook,
- 29:48Speaker 1: No no way, but to actually learn about the nuance
- 29:53Speaker 1: of the game and its entirety offense and defense and
- 29:55Speaker 1: learning from somebody like that. It actually gives me a
- 29:59Speaker 1: newfound appreciation all the guys I used to play with
- 30:01Speaker 1: two Like the stuff that y'all had to do in
- 30:02Speaker 1: the back. That's crazy, it's just ridiculous. Just I don't
- 30:06Speaker 1: even know hype. But that's why y'all do what y'all doing.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Y'all as great as y'all are. Um, And then I'd say, um,
- 30:15Speaker 1: you know, not that this should be last, but you know,
- 30:18Speaker 1: being a faith based man, it's always first. But it's
- 30:20Speaker 1: one of them, you know, just my faith and God
- 30:23Speaker 1: and just trusting, you know, the process, embracing you know,
- 30:27Speaker 1: every up and not so up because all of those,
- 30:31Speaker 1: all of the adversity face lead led me to this
- 30:34Speaker 1: podcast and to you guys. So I think God has
- 30:38Speaker 1: really been a blessing over the course of my life
- 30:40Speaker 1: and my career most definitely. Amen. Amen, all right. I
- 30:45Speaker 1: think we all we all said a mom. Mom was
- 30:47Speaker 1: in mind. Mom was a humorist. I think John Running
- 30:50Speaker 1: he said his mom was at his UM, I got
- 30:54Speaker 1: one for you, filling the blank. My life right now
- 30:59Speaker 1: is a blessing. It's a blessing. Um. I say that
- 31:09Speaker 1: because you know there's a there's a point in i'd
- 31:12Speaker 1: say two thousand and fifteen, two and sixteen where um,
- 31:18Speaker 1: and again it might be a little bit personal too
- 31:20Speaker 1: much for this, I don't know, but um I had to.
- 31:23Speaker 1: I had a perianal abscess in my heart stopped a
- 31:25Speaker 1: couple of times. Um. You never know why things happen,
- 31:30Speaker 1: but I can tell you one thing that like when
- 31:32Speaker 1: you're in the hospital table, when you got doctors surrounding,
- 31:34Speaker 1: you're saying, hey, listen, you know, um, you might want
- 31:37Speaker 1: to talk to your son and your wife because you know,
- 31:39Speaker 1: if this this procedure doesn't go well, and say you
- 31:43Speaker 1: get buy a type deal. Um, and to still be
- 31:46Speaker 1: here and to again, like I say, be talking to
- 31:49Speaker 1: you guys. Um, you know, life is a blessing. Man.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna write, I'm gonna right side of
- 31:55Speaker 1: the ground every day and I don't take anything for granted.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Right Glad you're here. That's d that's great man. That
- 32:05Speaker 1: whenever you get to talk to people that actually appreciate
- 32:07Speaker 1: the space to their end every day, you know that
- 32:10Speaker 1: really goes a long way and really pouring into others.
- 32:13Speaker 1: And you know we can pick up so much just
- 32:15Speaker 1: by speaking to you, just by engaging with you. Somebody
- 32:18Speaker 1: that's thankful, appreciative of just being where they are, their
- 32:22Speaker 1: feet where they are, and actually having the opportunities right
- 32:25Speaker 1: in front of them. Man, that really goes a long way.
- 32:27Speaker 1: So I appreciate you joining us and you know, really
- 32:30Speaker 1: just blessing us with your presence and your experience, your
- 32:33Speaker 1: life journeys all those other things. Man. Really cool. Also
- 32:37Speaker 1: giving all the dbs some love too, because me and
- 32:39Speaker 1: Peanut got know. The further you are away from the ball,
- 32:43Speaker 1: where you gotta be. I don't think people that you
- 32:46Speaker 1: gotta be able to figure stuff out and connect the dots,
- 32:49Speaker 1: because when you're close to the ball, you don't have
- 32:51Speaker 1: to know everything. Like you said, dude, I've just got
- 32:53Speaker 1: this gap, but I'm good way from the ball. You
- 32:56Speaker 1: gotta know everything got It's a lot of things you
- 32:58Speaker 1: gotta be able to figure out. Trying to tell you
- 33:00Speaker 1: you guys are the smartest like safeties, corners, Man, you're
- 33:05Speaker 1: the smartest dudes on the field. Man, I think safes
- 33:07Speaker 1: are the smartest ones on the field. In my opinion,
- 33:09Speaker 1: I would I would say safeties. I think safeties are
- 33:11Speaker 1: the smartest players on the field. I think corners are
- 33:14Speaker 1: the most athletic players on the field. Yeah, I get that.
- 33:18Speaker 1: I would definitely that Peanuts one of the smartest corners
- 33:22Speaker 1: I ever knew because he actually wanted to know what
