Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: This mediated podcast. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia. We are
- 0:12Speaker 1: joined by a very special guest and just a regular
- 0:15Speaker 1: special guest today. The very special guest is Michael Waddell,
- 0:18Speaker 1: where you just heard a few days ago on the
- 0:20Speaker 1: Regular Mediator episode Give it up. Mike Waddell. There we go.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Thank you all for having now because he does bad?
- 0:27Speaker 1: Are we also going to clap for just our regular
- 0:28Speaker 1: special guest, which is Corey Calkins. Corey is the guy
- 0:33Speaker 1: that if you write to Info with the Media dot
- 0:35Speaker 1: Com is at the address meat Eater. That's kind of funky.
- 0:40Speaker 1: If you write to that address, Corey is going to
- 0:43Speaker 1: read it. Yeah, he made the most judgmental man on
- 0:46Speaker 1: the planet because every email he has a judge. Yes,
- 0:51Speaker 1: he has a judge. It's merits all right to go?
- 0:54Speaker 1: Is it actually funny? Is it actually interesting? How many
- 0:58Speaker 1: day you think? One hundred, hundreds, hundreds and hundreds of emails?
- 1:03Speaker 1: It's full time, just good, it's bad, all right. This
- 1:07Speaker 1: is meat eat Trivia, Michael. This is trivia you're not
- 1:10Speaker 1: going to get from Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit or any
- 1:13Speaker 1: bar and grill trivia. These are born out of meat eaters.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Four verticals. What are they based loosely off? Mediators four
- 1:19Speaker 1: verticals and hunting, fishing, wild foods and conservation plus pioneers
- 1:23Speaker 1: and explorers. Here's why I like to that in there,
- 1:26Speaker 1: Ike environment. I had heard on a radio show once
- 1:28Speaker 1: upon a time that ten percent of your listeners at
- 1:31Speaker 1: any given moment are brand new. So I think we
- 1:34Speaker 1: need that. Oh that's why we can see that up
- 1:36Speaker 1: every single time, otherwise it's gonna be like, now, why
- 1:38Speaker 1: was there a question about a thirty odd six followed
- 1:40Speaker 1: by a question about al dente pasta? Oh? Yeah, that's great. Yeah,
- 1:44Speaker 1: but the people didn't like the eldente pasta question. Steve
- 1:46Speaker 1: didn't like the al dente pasta. There is a prizely
- 1:49Speaker 1: ridiculed media will donate a feedback provided to me through Corty.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Now here's what you're playing for, Michael. There is a prize.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Media will donate one hundred dollars to the con servation
- 2:00Speaker 1: organization of the winners choosing. We've played six times so far.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Steve has won three times, Brody has won twice, and
- 2:07Speaker 1: Clay has won once. Wow. Okay, so you were some
- 2:11Speaker 1: heavy hitters in this room. That was Brody tiebreaker with
- 2:18Speaker 1: Brody and Cal which came down to the came down
- 2:22Speaker 1: to came down to math, and I'm sad at math. Now, Michael,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I had a question during the podcast I didn't get
- 2:28Speaker 1: to bring up because it we kind of missed the moment.
- 2:30Speaker 1: But you talked about being a champion turkey caller, and
- 2:32Speaker 1: I heard Phil Robertson say once, who's a founder of
- 2:35Speaker 1: Duck Commander, that a living, breathing Mallard would get last
- 2:39Speaker 1: place in a duck calling contest. Is that the same
- 2:42Speaker 1: for turkeys? You think? Probably not as much so in turkey,
- 2:45Speaker 1: I would say that especially now, Holy cow, those guys
- 2:48Speaker 1: sound just like a wild turkey. Maybe maybe some of
- 2:51Speaker 1: the scenarios like if you just asked for a yep,
- 2:53Speaker 1: but no, it's so, that's a real deal. It's real deal.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Is scary own point like hair puts goose bumps on you?
- 3:02Speaker 1: Now for sure? What does guy's meant sound like? Now
- 3:04Speaker 1: we have some housekeeping from previous games of trivia. A
- 3:09Speaker 1: listener reach out and said that the Lake Geneva Antique
- 3:11Speaker 1: Mall in Wisconsin has a punt gun for sale. So
- 3:15Speaker 1: I called the antique store yesterday to get some details
- 3:17Speaker 1: The gun is sixty three inches long and listed for
- 3:20Speaker 1: sale at five thousand, five hundred dollars. The antique store
- 3:23Speaker 1: worker told me the gun has been there for years
- 3:25Speaker 1: and that the owner doesn't really care if he sells it,
- 3:28Speaker 1: so it's unlikely there'd be much of a negotiation. The
- 3:30Speaker 1: person on the phone said it's a spectacle that gets
- 3:32Speaker 1: a lot of folks in the door to look at it,
- 3:34Speaker 1: but he doesn't think there have been any seriously interested buyers.
- 3:37Speaker 1: You didn't just say, because we're gonna edit it out
- 3:39Speaker 1: if you did. Where it is, Yeah, the Lake Geneva Antique.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Why would you? Why would you? Stupidest thing I've ever heard?
- 3:48Speaker 1: You want to buy this thing? Yes? No, okay, now
- 3:50Speaker 1: here's why I didn't think you would want to. It's
- 3:52Speaker 1: only sixty three inches long. That's a little over five feet. Oh.
- 3:56Speaker 1: As far as far as punk guns go, this is
- 4:00Speaker 1: is long as like what a standard want off punt guns,
- 4:05Speaker 1: backpackers mountain I can already say this is way over
- 4:12Speaker 1: my yeah, okay, we'll hold off. I want a real
- 4:16Speaker 1: two man. It's the ducks. It's the guns. I used
- 4:19Speaker 1: to use a commercial, uh for those those big yeah,
- 4:23Speaker 1: big market hunt for dark. Yes, and they call punt guns.
- 4:27Speaker 1: You guys shoot him. One guy just holds the barrel
- 4:29Speaker 1: over his shoulder. I cannot wait to get one. It
- 4:31Speaker 1: looks awesome, but again it's only a little over five
- 4:33Speaker 1: feet long, so I don't think that's the one we
- 4:35Speaker 1: got it for. It's a stupid one. Staying on the
- 4:37Speaker 1: subject of punt guns, about a dozen people rode in
- 4:39Speaker 1: to let me know that they got the punt gun
- 4:41Speaker 1: question correct because of the movie Tremors four. As a
- 4:45Speaker 1: prequel to Tremors, this movie is about how a Nevada
- 4:48Speaker 1: town defends itself against grab boids in the eighteen hundreds.
- 4:51Speaker 1: In one of the film's most famous scenes, hear Him
- 4:53Speaker 1: Gummer misses a tremor at point blank range with a
- 4:56Speaker 1: punt gun, which inspires an onlooker to yell this, you missed.
- 5:01Speaker 1: What a cat now. The movie didn't use a real
- 5:07Speaker 1: punt gun, of course, but prop master Bill Davis did
- 5:10Speaker 1: construct a replica that ended up being over eight feet
- 5:13Speaker 1: long and ninety four pounds. The prop gun was then
- 5:16Speaker 1: fitted with a real H and R twelve gage shotgun
- 5:19Speaker 1: on the inside, which is what would actually fire when
- 5:21Speaker 1: the trigger was pulled to make each shot more dramatic.
- 5:23Speaker 1: The crew drenched the bear with w D forty, which
- 5:26Speaker 1: created a giant cloud of smoke whenever fired. Wow, just
- 5:30Speaker 1: giving all sorts of kids, all sorts of bright ideas exact.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I feel like everyone in America is an expert on
- 5:36Speaker 1: prop guns and stuff now after the Rust film. Yeah, yes, debacle,
- 5:41Speaker 1: Now we're all like, well, I actually it's not how
- 5:43Speaker 1: it works with a prop gun. It does make me
- 5:45Speaker 1: feel good though. Here the WD forty, because I do
- 5:47Speaker 1: believe WD forty and duct tape was pretty much in
- 5:51Speaker 1: everything that I grew up. A matter of fact, we
- 5:53Speaker 1: didn't call it duct tape. We called it Alabama chrome.
- 5:57Speaker 1: We used to refer to w D as wild Yeah,
- 6:01Speaker 1: little cooler wild dog. Remember spreading at the on the
- 6:04Speaker 1: hot on the tracks into evil coknevel that spend the
- 6:07Speaker 1: tires You spread a little w first. Oh Now, I
- 6:10Speaker 1: imagine that is not going to be our last punk
- 6:12Speaker 1: gun update. So if you see one at your antique store,
- 6:16Speaker 1: let me know about it and I will investigate. So
- 6:18Speaker 1: we are now onto our game of meat eater trivia.
- 6:21Speaker 1: All right, Phil, play the drop. Look, I need to
- 6:26Speaker 1: know what I stand to win everything? How I'm saying,
- 6:30Speaker 1: just tend to win everything. Well done. All right, we
- 6:41Speaker 1: are now on to trivia. The first question, which is
- 6:44Speaker 1: one of ten. The first question is always multiple choice,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and that's what we have here. Again. The topic is predators.
- 6:52Speaker 1: What is the leading cause of kyote deaths in urban areas?
- 6:56Speaker 1: Is it being killed by other coyotes? Mange get shot
- 7:00Speaker 1: or vehicles? You forgot to say, like A, what is
- 7:06Speaker 1: the leading cause of kyo desks in urban areas? Is
- 7:09Speaker 1: it A being shot or excuse me, being killed by
- 7:12Speaker 1: other coyotes? B, Mange C getting shot or D vehicles? Again,
- 7:19Speaker 1: this is an urban areas, dude, dude, does everybody have
- 7:26Speaker 1: an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 7:29Speaker 1: Seth saying D, Cal saying D vehicles, Steve saying A
- 7:35Speaker 1: other coyotes, Michael saying B. Which is mange, Brody saying
- 7:41Speaker 1: D vehicles, Corey saying B, Mange, Phil saying other coyotes,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and Corin saying mange. The correct answer is D vehicles?
- 7:53Speaker 1: O what bro get? I got ding? I felt like
- 7:58Speaker 1: we were set up es. Honestly, I overthought that. I
- 8:04Speaker 1: really thought. You can overthink them, you can underthink Yeah,
- 8:09Speaker 1: it's it's just hard to find the spot a game
- 8:12Speaker 1: in a game. This statistic is via the Urban Coyote
- 8:15Speaker 1: Research Project. By tracking collared kyotes, they determined that about
- 8:18Speaker 1: forty five percent of kyote desk are caused by vehicles,
- 8:21Speaker 1: twenty percent or from being shot, ten percent are from mange,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and the remaining twenty five percent are labeled as other
- 8:28Speaker 1: or unknown. So home at getting killed by a kyote,
- 8:31Speaker 1: it's not even in there. I think that just made
- 8:32Speaker 1: that one up. I think that constitutes the twenty five percent.
- 8:37Speaker 1: You're right, you can't determine the death I just did.
- 8:43Speaker 1: We are onto question two. The topic is turkeys. What
- 8:48Speaker 1: state has the furthest west population of Rio Grand turkeys?
- 8:55Speaker 1: What state has the most western population of Grand turkeys? Okay,
- 9:02Speaker 1: this is kind of a um oh, we got Steve
- 9:06Speaker 1: groaning and it's really unhappy with this question. Michael, doing
- 9:10Speaker 1: a lot of right. I'm trying to must be a
- 9:12Speaker 1: state with five five trying out the United States outline
- 9:19Speaker 1: to figure out what's the western this most point. But
- 9:22Speaker 1: I think it's I think it's uh, don't say it,
- 9:26Speaker 1: what state kin west population of real grand turkey? Steve,
- 9:31Speaker 1: I'm afraid you're gonna help the room start asking. I'm
- 9:34Speaker 1: really struggling. You're struggling with I think I'm struggling with.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Everybody have an answer, very hold on, hold on iph
- 9:42Speaker 1: geography here? Oh no, you can't use a phone Google right,
- 9:46Speaker 1: I would say no phones allowed. Does everybody have an answer?
- 9:50Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Seth saying Nevada,
- 9:54Speaker 1: cal saying California, Steve saying Oregon. What else saying what
- 9:58Speaker 1: are the two? You pick one? Which one? Well, that's
- 10:02Speaker 1: my question? Which is more Western states have them? Um,
- 10:07Speaker 1: you gotta just do it quick because you can't be
- 10:08Speaker 1: in for people's stuff, Okay, Washington, Washington, Wattel says, Brody
- 10:12Speaker 1: says Hawaii, Cory says, as Phil says Arizona, and Corren
- 10:16Speaker 1: says New Mexico. The correct answer is Hawaiian. I don't
- 10:25Speaker 1: count that because I figured that way so far out
- 10:29Speaker 1: of back east. Again. No, that's why Captain Cook quit exploring.
- 10:34Speaker 1: He just staying a man. That's right. Literally, I'm just
- 10:39Speaker 1: the gobbler from Hawaii. They're probably gobbling there right now.
- 10:42Speaker 1: They are are roughly four hundred reels. We're trapped in Texas,
- 10:47Speaker 1: and transferred to Hawaii in the nineteen sixties. Today, their
- 10:50Speaker 1: population is about eighteen thousand, and at just twenty dollars
- 10:54Speaker 1: for a non resident license, they offer one of the
- 10:56Speaker 1: cheapest tags for out of staters in the nation. You know,
- 10:58Speaker 1: Jim Harrison observed it. Oh Jesus, the writer Jim Harrison
- 11:03Speaker 1: observed that, being his age, he can't take Hawaiian Alaska seriously.
- 11:09Speaker 1: A states. This is from a Steve Ronella who is
- 11:14Speaker 1: over two. He there was just a meat Eater episode
- 11:18Speaker 1: where you guys were hunting that in his mind with
- 11:23Speaker 1: people saying how states, what goes to his mind is
- 11:26Speaker 1: forty eight. Nobody got that right. I'm gonna start cheating
- 11:31Speaker 1: like I didn't. Courtney Rody is gonna have to have
- 11:36Speaker 1: a very poor game to catch him. We are on
- 11:39Speaker 1: the question three. The topic is fishing. What color is
- 11:43Speaker 1: the most popular among fishing lures? According to Shield Sports. Now,
- 11:48Speaker 1: if you're not familiar, shields isn't found in the entire country,
- 11:51Speaker 1: but for most of the country, they go all the
- 11:53Speaker 1: way down to Texas, all the way up to North Dakota,
- 11:55Speaker 1: all the way west to Nevada, all the way east
- 11:58Speaker 1: to Illinois. I think so that's kind of the range
- 12:00Speaker 1: you're looking at. And to get this answer, I had
- 12:02Speaker 1: to go to selsports dot com and then sort their
- 12:05Speaker 1: fishing lures by color. This color yielded the most results. Now,
- 12:11Speaker 1: this is tracking jigs, crank baits, plastic, spoon spinners, basically
- 12:14Speaker 1: everything except flies. If that helps you answer at all,
- 12:17Speaker 1: Me and Broider this is this is not just soft plastic.
- 12:20Speaker 1: This is everything, everything except flies. Very colors would sell?
- 12:25Speaker 1: Me and Broider have the same answer. It's not. Yeah,
- 12:27Speaker 1: and are they real colors or is it like pumpkin? Yeah,
- 12:31Speaker 1: exactly real colors watermelon. Yeah, that's a good question, like
- 12:38Speaker 1: when you buy a pumpkin like pumpkin. Uh, worms, not
- 12:42Speaker 1: like it was like who's pumpkin? It's not like like
- 12:45Speaker 1: eggshell white. That's not what I'm looking for. Ye, this
- 12:48Speaker 1: is just a standard. Does everybody have an answer? No? Yeah,
- 12:55Speaker 1: our fisherman Seth struggling to find a color bad spot. Well, yeah,
- 12:59Speaker 1: that color I was going with wasn't a color. It's
- 13:02Speaker 1: like a very popular Does everybody have an answer? Yeah,
- 13:06Speaker 1: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Seth saying green,
- 13:09Speaker 1: cal saying chartrups, Steve sang chartruse, what else saying white,
- 13:14Speaker 1: Brodie sang chartruse, Corey sang red, Phil saying yellow, and
- 13:18Speaker 1: Corin saying purple. The correct answer is chartruse, green or yellow.
- 13:26Speaker 1: If you said greener yellow, couldn't spell it. I haven't
- 13:31Speaker 1: used it in the poem. If I was gonna say
- 13:36Speaker 1: fire tiger, well that would be chartruse. Would like it
- 13:40Speaker 1: would it would be labeled under chartruse or greener yellow. Again,
- 13:44Speaker 1: if you said green or yellow, accept that because chartrups
- 13:46Speaker 1: is supposed to be the exact medium between green and right.
- 13:50Speaker 1: As well, chartrus had an actual definition. I thought you
- 13:53Speaker 1: knew it when you see it. There are nearly one
- 13:55Speaker 1: thousand fishing lures for sale and Shields dot com that
- 13:58Speaker 1: contain green, yellow, or shirt truth. That's followed by seven
- 14:01Speaker 1: hundred for sale that are black, six hundred that are white,
- 14:04Speaker 1: and five hundred that are orange. Additionally, there are thirty
- 14:07Speaker 1: five meetty items for sale on Shields dot com, ranging
- 14:11Speaker 1: from knives to turkey calls to seasonings. Yea, so so white?
- 14:16Speaker 1: Was there? White? Was there there in place? We're onto
- 14:20Speaker 1: question for the topic is firearms. What is the only
- 14:23Speaker 1: sport at the winter Olympics that uses a gunr this
- 14:29Speaker 1: is something I should know. A lot of fast answers
- 14:32Speaker 1: stept for maybe Waddel the least wintered guy here. Ah,
- 14:40Speaker 1: I just saw a special on this whole thing. This
- 14:42Speaker 1: girl got beat up and the only sport at the
- 14:46Speaker 1: Winter Olympics that uses a gun. We were just talking
- 14:50Speaker 1: about twenty two's. Oh my god, I can see the
- 14:53Speaker 1: whole discipline. Just describe it. We're waiting on Waddell. I'm
- 15:00Speaker 1: I'm I'm about to murder. I'm about to make everybody
- 15:04Speaker 1: in Georgia hate me. I don't think. I don't even
- 15:12Speaker 1: know what I know. Caitlyn Jenner didn't do it. But
- 15:16Speaker 1: I know I don't even know if you spell this.
- 15:20Speaker 1: I don't even know if it is. I'm just gonna
- 15:22Speaker 1: put a lawn over here. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 15:26Speaker 1: We have seth saying by athlon, by athlon, by athlon,
- 15:30Speaker 1: Waidell saying, Pathlon, tell us, tell us what you said.
- 15:36Speaker 1: What is the athalon? Brody's saying, by athlon by athlon
- 15:42Speaker 1: everybody but whatever, close, Yeah, Pathlon, We'll give it to him.
- 15:50Speaker 1: The Sports Standard Rifles and and Shoots eighteen twenty seven
- 15:53Speaker 1: Fourtner which ninety seven percent of competitors use. Athletes shoot
- 15:57Speaker 1: twenty two rim fire rounds at targets that are fifty
- 15:59Speaker 1: four yards. To weigh, their guns must weigh between seven
- 16:02Speaker 1: point seven and sixteen point five pounds, with a minimum
- 16:04Speaker 1: trigger pull of one point one pound. Germany is the
- 16:07Speaker 1: most successful nation in Olympic biathlon history, followed by Norway
- 16:11Speaker 1: and Russia. Wow, Michael, you need to get one of
- 16:14Speaker 1: those guns for your pecan orchard. Yeah, yeah, I don't know.
- 16:18Speaker 1: All the targets are the same length of way. We
- 16:20Speaker 1: have a little course up here yards. There's a little
- 16:22Speaker 1: course down in North Ketcham. But the target sizes are different,
- 16:26Speaker 1: I believe, because you have to take shots from standing
- 16:28Speaker 1: as well as prone. I think the standing ones it's
- 16:30Speaker 1: like five inches, but the prone ones it's like one
- 16:32Speaker 1: and a half inches. Yeah, my kid, when you heard
- 16:35Speaker 1: about biathlone, he thought that sounded all right. I bet
- 16:38Speaker 1: they don't have trouble getting twenty two shells. No, bet
- 16:42Speaker 1: they shoot those fiokis No, No, it's very specific. We
- 16:47Speaker 1: are onto question five. After this question, we will get
- 16:50Speaker 1: a scoreboard update from Philly. Topic is cooking. This next
- 16:54Speaker 1: great question comes to us via Jonathan Gilman. If you
- 16:57Speaker 1: have a question you think is right for Mediator Trivia,
- 16:59Speaker 1: you can send it to Trivia at the mediator dot com.
- 17:02Speaker 1: According to Jewish dietary rules, for a fish to be
- 17:06Speaker 1: considered kosher, it must possess two features. Name one of them.
- 17:12Speaker 1: According to Jewish dietary rules, for a fish to be
- 17:15Speaker 1: considered kosher, it must possess two features. I need you
- 17:20Speaker 1: to name one of them. A confident Steve one of them,
- 17:25Speaker 1: just one of them. Confident Steve, not so confident for
- 17:28Speaker 1: the rest of the room. I had a Jewish girlfriend
- 17:30Speaker 1: for a long time. I know all this stuff. I
- 17:36Speaker 1: could talk to you about this whole subject. Two things
- 17:40Speaker 1: to consider it kosher. Two features. Now, it's not like
- 17:43Speaker 1: a help the room out here for a second. We're
- 17:46Speaker 1: just not about how it's killed or okay, it's not
- 17:50Speaker 1: kosher slaughter kosh root, I believe. And we just need
- 17:53Speaker 1: one of those, just one of the features to make
- 17:57Speaker 1: a fish kosher. I'm ready. I think Steve might be
- 18:02Speaker 1: the only one ready. Oh this is gonna help me
- 18:05Speaker 1: close in on Brody. Does everybody have an answer? Brody's
- 18:08Speaker 1: still writing, He's nervous. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 18:11Speaker 1: We have Seth saying scales, Cal saying scale, Steve saying scales,
- 18:15Speaker 1: what else saying skin, Brody saying I can't see the answer,
- 18:19Speaker 1: head Corey saying white flesh. Phil without an answer, Krin
- 18:25Speaker 1: without an answer. The correct answer is either scales or
- 18:29Speaker 1: finn scratch scales to help me helps, We got Seth,
- 18:36Speaker 1: Cal Steve. Some examples of fish out of kosher include bass,
- 18:41Speaker 1: carp trout, herring, tuna, and snapper. And some examples of
- 18:44Speaker 1: fish that aren't kosher include catfish, sturgeon, eel, burbit, paddlefish,
- 18:49Speaker 1: and shark. Caveat is only considered kosher when it comes
- 18:52Speaker 1: from a kosher fish, So eggs from a trout would
- 18:55Speaker 1: be kosher, but eggs from a sturgeon would not. Wow,
- 18:59Speaker 1: you want to it caused like a little wrinkle and
- 19:01Speaker 1: culture eating is when I remember reading about that, it
- 19:06Speaker 1: was realized that like shark skin is that is scale,
- 19:11Speaker 1: Like it's just a different it's like a different texture,
- 19:13Speaker 1: different size, same a sturgeon. And then you had to
- 19:15Speaker 1: sort of look and reassess, and then you know they
- 19:19Speaker 1: kind of the scholars kind of then argue about what
- 19:21Speaker 1: it all means and isn't there a name for that
- 19:24Speaker 1: feature on like sturgeon and shark skins, like scoots or
- 19:27Speaker 1: something that scoots. No scoots, the sturgeon has scoots. Scoots
- 19:31Speaker 1: are not the same thing as scales. Scoots are like
- 19:33Speaker 1: the sharp parts that are run across the back and
- 19:35Speaker 1: a little bit on the side. Phil, give us a
- 19:37Speaker 1: scoreboard update. All right. I don't like saying last place
- 19:42Speaker 1: because it sounds a meaning. I know who that is.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Mike and Corey ted ted in last with one point.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I have two. Uh, Steve coming in is this second?
- 19:59Speaker 1: P second place with three? And then we have a
- 20:02Speaker 1: three way tie for first. Wow, Brody, Seth and Cal
- 20:06Speaker 1: I'll have four points. Wow. This is tight, assholes. Five
- 20:21Speaker 1: questions left. This is question six. The topic is conservation.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Now this is a visual question. I will do my
- 20:27Speaker 1: best to describe to listeners what the room is going
- 20:30Speaker 1: to be seeing. But if you want to play along
- 20:32Speaker 1: for real and see what these guys are seeing, you
- 20:34Speaker 1: can go to Instagram and check out at Spencer new Arth.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I will have this photo there that you can use
- 20:40Speaker 1: to play along. Now, I have looked at the game
- 20:42Speaker 1: agency logos for all fifty states and have declared This
- 20:46Speaker 1: one the absolute best. It features a raccoon, a bass,
- 20:50Speaker 1: and an oak leaf. To get this correct, I need
- 20:53Speaker 1: you to tell me what state it's from, and I
- 20:55Speaker 1: will now show the room and I have scrubbed the
- 20:58Speaker 1: logo of any words. What it's a triangle. It's a bass,
- 21:07Speaker 1: a raccoon, and oakley a blue triangle. This is absolutely
- 21:14Speaker 1: not We're not talking a large mouth. This is the
- 21:20Speaker 1: best game agency logo. I salute this state for having
- 21:23Speaker 1: this as their logo when so many other states are
- 21:26Speaker 1: just so boring. It's great logo. It's not new, is it? No,
- 21:30Speaker 1: like like maybe the last couple states added to the
- 21:34Speaker 1: Union type of new, or yeah it's not one of them. Yeah,
- 21:37Speaker 1: not giving anything doesn't recognize you're not just whistling dicksie,
- 21:42Speaker 1: are you No? No, nobody in the room knew it
- 21:48Speaker 1: off the top of their head. So everyone's just gonna
- 21:50Speaker 1: be taking educated guests. I took a stab at off
- 21:52Speaker 1: of what would have a raccoon, a bass, and an
- 21:55Speaker 1: oak leaf as their logo. Everybody having crazy guess on
- 22:00Speaker 1: my part, I think everyone will have a pretty educated guess. Now,
- 22:03Speaker 1: if somebody uh comes out and says like Hawaiian be like, huh,
- 22:06Speaker 1: not too educated. Brody's raising though, I can tell you
- 22:10Speaker 1: I probably wouldn't have two questions here with the answers
- 22:13Speaker 1: Hawaii though that's yeah. Um, does everybody have an answer? Yeah,
- 22:20Speaker 1: I wrote an answer. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 22:25Speaker 1: We have Seth saying Mississippi, Cal saying South Carolina, is
- 22:30Speaker 1: Steve saying West Virginia, while Dell saying Kentucky, Brody saying
- 22:34Speaker 1: West Virginia, Corey saying Oklahoma, Phil saying Alabama, and Crin
- 22:38Speaker 1: saying New Jersey. Nobody got it correct for some reason,
- 22:43Speaker 1: I was going Alabama too. Does anybody want to take
- 22:45Speaker 1: a second? Babaks, it feels Alabama? While that would have
- 22:50Speaker 1: known him. I don't feel like it was Alabama because
- 22:54Speaker 1: you've seen it and it wouldn't be. I don't think
- 22:55Speaker 1: it was Tennessee. The correct answer here is Missouri, one
- 23:03Speaker 1: of the best that conservation state. It's well funded, independent,
- 23:08Speaker 1: game all sorts, and a great logo. Seven other states
- 23:11Speaker 1: have a bass in their logo, those being Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana,
- 23:17Speaker 1: South Carolina, and Tennessee. But only one other state has
- 23:20Speaker 1: a raccoon in their logo, which is Tennessee. Yeah, born
- 23:24Speaker 1: on the outs, you see, resident of Missouri can get
- 23:33Speaker 1: Missouri Conservation. Yeah, Brandon Butler's probably having a heart attack
- 23:37Speaker 1: right now. No one knew that. We are onto questions.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Thank you, We are onto question seven. Topic is biology.
- 23:43Speaker 1: This next great question comes to us via Adam Elmhorst.
- 23:46Speaker 1: If you have a question you think is right from
- 23:48Speaker 1: mediator Trivia, you can send it to Trivia themedia dot com.
- 23:52Speaker 1: According to our friends at the National Deer Association, a
- 23:55Speaker 1: whitetail buck has seven glands, named two of them. This
- 24:02Speaker 1: is according to the NDA, a whitetail buck has seven glands.
- 24:06Speaker 1: I need you to just name two of them. Feeling
- 24:10Speaker 1: very strong right now? Okay? Right? Why am I blanking
- 24:14Speaker 1: on this? It's this question seven. Brody's struggling. We have
- 24:19Speaker 1: three left. You're doodling or struggling? Brodie, I might be struggling.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Now? Hang on staring at
- 24:29Speaker 1: this deer head on the wall. You're gonna ask You're
- 24:33Speaker 1: trying to ask him. I literally I wrote down the
- 24:37Speaker 1: name of the gland that I didn't actually like physically remove.
- 24:41Speaker 1: This year for helping the room out, Kel Yeah, don't
- 24:46Speaker 1: don't help the room out. Cal. Just struggle quietly, don't
- 24:50Speaker 1: struggle out loud. You might just give Brodie the answer
- 24:55Speaker 1: he's looking for. No, I'm not gonna change it, because
- 24:58Speaker 1: then that would be cheat fudge. Does everybody have an
- 25:08Speaker 1: answer ready for you? Oh? I'm not accepting three answers.
- 25:13Speaker 1: You need to pick two. Cal, I see a lot
- 25:15Speaker 1: of Well, go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 25:20Speaker 1: Seth saying tarsl and lymph nodes. Cal saying tarsal and thyroid.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Steve sang orbital and tarsal. What else? Sang tarsal and orbital?
- 25:31Speaker 1: Brody sang tarsal and metatarsal. Cordy sang scent and reproduction.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Phil sang not Penny's boat. What does that mean? That's
- 25:40Speaker 1: all you lost fans out there? Okay? Karin saying tarsl
- 25:45Speaker 1: and sent the seven glands on a white tail buck
- 25:49Speaker 1: are the pre orbital, which I would accept, orbital um,
- 25:52Speaker 1: the forehead, the nasal interdigital which is on the hoof
- 25:56Speaker 1: penile sheath, tarsal and metatarsal. Good job, I almost said forehead,
- 26:01Speaker 1: but I thought that's too simple. I didn't know, so
- 26:05Speaker 1: the room did fairly well, who all got it correct? Here?
- 26:07Speaker 1: You can't just got one. The most mysterious of these
- 26:15Speaker 1: seven is the metatarsal gland, which is located in a
- 26:18Speaker 1: small tuft of white hair on the lower leg. Biologist
- 26:21Speaker 1: best guess is that it helps with body temperature regulation,
- 26:24Speaker 1: because white tails in Central and South America have metatarsal
- 26:28Speaker 1: glands that are nearly non existent, m and mule deer
- 26:32Speaker 1: having even bigger metatarsal gland than white tails do, which
- 26:36Speaker 1: has led them to that guess. Hmm. I was in
- 26:40Speaker 1: the in the forehead gland is just called the forehead
- 26:42Speaker 1: because I was sitting there trying to think, because that's
- 26:44Speaker 1: the you know, they always are using ana, licking branches
- 26:47Speaker 1: and rubbing. But I could. I was like, for sure,
- 26:48Speaker 1: it just can't be forehead, but it is cool. We
- 26:51Speaker 1: are onto question eight. We will get you on the
- 26:53Speaker 1: back of it. I know we will get another scoreboard
- 26:56Speaker 1: update from Phil after this question. The topic is cooking.
- 27:01Speaker 1: This dish that's very popular in the mid Atlantic goes
- 27:04Speaker 1: by many names. It's best described as a mush of
- 27:07Speaker 1: stewed meat scraps with corn meal that's shaped into loaves
- 27:11Speaker 1: for slicing and frying. Traditionally it's made with pork, but
- 27:14Speaker 1: there are also versions that use beef, turkey, chicken, and
- 27:17Speaker 1: of course venison. What is it uspa boys have an advantage? Yeah. Again,
- 27:23Speaker 1: this goes by many names. Helping out the room to yourself,
- 27:32Speaker 1: just struggle quietly. Again, it's best described as this is
- 27:38Speaker 1: an actual definition. A mush of stewed meat scraps with
- 27:41Speaker 1: corn meal that's shaped into loaves for slicing or frying.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Traditionally it's made with pork, but there are many other
- 27:47Speaker 1: versions that exist as well as many names. Do you
- 27:51Speaker 1: accept the other name? I will accept the other names?
- 27:53Speaker 1: Do you get bonus points for having allot of them down? No?
- 27:56Speaker 1: I have about five written down here. I would be
- 27:58Speaker 1: surprised if we hear more than two you when we
- 28:01Speaker 1: reveal the answers, Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead
- 28:05Speaker 1: and reveal your answers. We have Seth saying scrapple or
- 28:08Speaker 1: pan hoss, Cal saying scrapple, Steve saying scrapple aka pan has,
- 28:15Speaker 1: Michael sang Shepherd's pie, Brody's saying scrapple, Corey saying mushy,
- 28:19Speaker 1: Pork saying scrapple, and Corin saying scrapple mushy park. I'm sorry.
- 28:26Speaker 1: The correct answers are scrapple, pan has pan, rabbit, krepple's liver,
- 28:32Speaker 1: mush or spam spams. The same spam would be unacceptable.
- 28:38Speaker 1: No spam is scrapple. There's no corn meal in there.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I think we call it. Well, they call it that right,
- 28:44Speaker 1: hands in the air, please. I found a nineteen o
- 28:47Speaker 1: nine article from the Montreal Gazette that says scrapple is
- 28:50Speaker 1: so off pudding that people who eat it quote must
- 28:53Speaker 1: pretend to enjoy it. But the article later concedes that
- 28:56Speaker 1: it has its health benefits, saying that scrapple fed children
- 28:59Speaker 1: in the country are healthier and make progress in school
- 29:03Speaker 1: in the South. You heard meat like a pickled kind
- 29:07Speaker 1: of a scrapple, I would assume our potted meat, Heill,
- 29:10Speaker 1: I eat a lot of that scrapples. Amazing potted mate, Phil.
- 29:21Speaker 1: We have two questions left. Give us a scoreboard, all right,
- 29:23Speaker 1: I'll just give you the scores that matter. H and
- 29:26Speaker 1: everything stands in the same way we have. Actually, no,
- 29:29Speaker 1: it doesn't. Steve Seth and Cow are tied with five
- 29:33Speaker 1: points in second place, and Brody has six points in
- 29:36Speaker 1: first place. Some bots called the Kaiser blade, I called
- 29:42Speaker 1: a sling blade. Question nine. The topic is public lands
- 29:47Speaker 1: besides the Great Lakes. Name one of the three biggest
- 29:51Speaker 1: lakes in the lower forty eight besides the Great Lakes.
- 29:55Speaker 1: So if you were to look at the top list,
- 29:57Speaker 1: the top five are the Great Lakes. So I'm looking
- 30:00Speaker 1: for six, seventh or eight natural or yeah, come on now,
- 30:04Speaker 1: it's like there could be a reservoir, it could be
- 30:07Speaker 1: a natural lake current or come on, what what? I
- 30:17Speaker 1: don't like this? Yeah, I don't like this one either,
- 30:19Speaker 1: because it rolls in these big impoundments on the Missouri
- 30:23Speaker 1: and stuff. Man, just have to be a natural lake.
- 30:26Speaker 1: The Great Lakes are natural lakes. Don't be rolling in
- 30:29Speaker 1: like some chunk of the Missouri which runs for like
- 30:32Speaker 1: three hundred miles, at which point someone determines that the
- 30:37Speaker 1: lake has ended in the river resumes still a lake.
- 30:39Speaker 1: I just don't think we got no natural lakes in
- 30:41Speaker 1: the South. It's either a pond or but we got some,
- 30:45Speaker 1: you know what, Okay, let me, I'm so, so is
- 30:51Speaker 1: it natural? Are we going with? Just any of it
- 30:53Speaker 1: can be a reservoir or a natural lake, besides a
- 30:56Speaker 1: great lake doing a drought cycle or not doing a drought.
- 31:03Speaker 1: I don't know how to spell this. You know these
- 31:06Speaker 1: other lakes experienced drouts as well. Even if it is
- 31:08Speaker 1: it large by volume or surface area, is by surface area,
- 31:11Speaker 1: it's an acceptable question. That's an acceptable question. Okay, describe
- 31:17Speaker 1: where it is lower forty eight, right, lowery Yeah, it's like, well,
- 31:27Speaker 1: that's the biggest, that's the biggest natural It's the biggest
- 31:30Speaker 1: natural lake west of the Mississippi. We have an angry
- 31:33Speaker 1: room right now. It's just a very unspecific bullshit questions.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Does everybody have a bullshit answer? I have one. Go
- 31:40Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Seth saying the
- 31:43Speaker 1: great Salt Lake cal saying lake me say what I
- 31:46Speaker 1: scratched out and what I wrote? Steve saying I can't
- 31:48Speaker 1: read what you scratch scratch it out? Says fort Peck
- 31:52Speaker 1: what else saying pick one of them? He has three
- 31:59Speaker 1: answers he has. I didn't know if Steve was gonna
- 32:03Speaker 1: And first, I don't even know if I'm right in
- 32:04Speaker 1: natural a reservoir. But you know, if I want to
- 32:07Speaker 1: play out my claim here, Kentucky Lake's big, you know
- 32:10Speaker 1: all right, then you got Oka Chobe down in Florida,
- 32:12Speaker 1: which we forgot about flori big big, And then and
- 32:15Speaker 1: then Devil's Lake out in North Dakota, which which one
- 32:17Speaker 1: he's put down on a number of large I'm gonna
- 32:20Speaker 1: go maybe with Devil's Lake because I think that's gonna
- 32:24Speaker 1: flood out all of North Dakota in time. Right Why
- 32:26Speaker 1: Dell says Devil's like, Brody says Lake, Powell, Corey saying
- 32:30Speaker 1: like the Ozark's Phil saying flathead, and Krin saying the
- 32:34Speaker 1: lake in Chicago. But that one doesn't count. Yeah, it's
- 32:38Speaker 1: a great lake. You're thinking Lake Michigan. The correct answers
- 32:43Speaker 1: are the Great Salt Lake, Lake of the Woods, or
- 32:46Speaker 1: Lake Owahee. I want to stay last Powell, Michael ten
- 32:55Speaker 1: years your answered the Devil's Lake might be right, might
- 32:58Speaker 1: be right? Pretty dang flat that could eat up the
- 33:00Speaker 1: whole state. I am like, we need to be Great
- 33:05Speaker 1: Salt Lake, Lake of the Woods, and Lake Hawaii. Those
- 33:09Speaker 1: are all natural. Lake awa he's a reservoir that's on
- 33:12Speaker 1: the Missouri River. It goes from North Dakota to South Dakota. Now,
- 33:16Speaker 1: the Great Salt Lake is two thousand square miles. Lake
- 33:18Speaker 1: of the Woods is seventeen hundred square miles. In Lake
- 33:20Speaker 1: Hawah he is seven hundred square miles. But even if
- 33:22Speaker 1: you put all three together, that's still only half the
- 33:25Speaker 1: size of Lake Ontario, which is the smallest of the
- 33:27Speaker 1: great Lake. How big is Pecker? Where's that come in?
- 33:30Speaker 1: I don't know what's the lake on in International Falls?
- 33:32Speaker 1: Is that? It is? That a great lake there on
- 33:35Speaker 1: ice fishing? One time International it was the coldest moment
- 33:39Speaker 1: of my entire lit It's not a great lake. But
- 33:41Speaker 1: now to your credit, I think was maybe like fourth
- 33:45Speaker 1: was in there. It was like top six Pack was
- 33:48Speaker 1: at one time the largest earth and dam in the world.
- 33:51Speaker 1: I got what I was thinking of. We are on
- 33:54Speaker 1: to our last question. Give us another scoreboard update? Phil Uh, Well,
- 33:59Speaker 1: I don't think it's changed, so the same thing, so well,
- 34:01Speaker 1: so get it right? Oh he did? Yes, Seth tied Brody.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Oh wow, come on film dramatic twist. I was not
- 34:10Speaker 1: paying any attention. Seth and Brody or tied for first
- 34:12Speaker 1: thing with six points the Great Salt Lake, and then
- 34:17Speaker 1: Cal and Steve with five. Oh. The last question the
- 34:23Speaker 1: topic is fishing. This next great question comes to us
- 34:26Speaker 1: via Tom McCormick. If you have a question you think
- 34:28Speaker 1: is right for Meatia to trivia, you can send it
- 34:30Speaker 1: to Trivia at the meat eater dot com. What Southern
- 34:34Speaker 1: state has the most species of fish in America? Southern State?
- 34:39Speaker 1: Does this encount include saltwater fish? It does this? This
- 34:43Speaker 1: includes crazy? Do we gotta is this now when we
- 34:47Speaker 1: say Southern steak? Is this below the Mason Dixon line?
- 34:50Speaker 1: Or just yes? Anybody who would think of a Southern
- 34:53Speaker 1: steak think of this as being one of them. Stu
- 34:57Speaker 1: Millers like Illinois, What southern state has the most species
- 35:02Speaker 1: of fish in America? We had a confident Seth and
- 35:09Speaker 1: a Brody who has yet to ride an answer. Okay,
- 35:13Speaker 1: you were asking the question, I would say, very confident Brody,
- 35:16Speaker 1: I would say, it's just the first thing that popped
- 35:17Speaker 1: in my head. Okay, that's really interesting. I feel like
- 35:21Speaker 1: it could be a trick question. I have a reason
- 35:22Speaker 1: why I gave my answer, and this this is a
- 35:24Speaker 1: like er. It's a state. The Southern state has the
- 35:29Speaker 1: most species of fish in America. Okay, I'm changing, I thought. Okay,
- 35:36Speaker 1: ah man, it's so does everybody have an answer? Saying okay,
- 35:41Speaker 1: you could go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 35:45Speaker 1: Seth saying Florida, cal saying Florida, Steve saying Florida, Florida, Florida, Florida,
- 35:51Speaker 1: Phil saying Louisiana. And Krin saying Louisiana. Florida's got all
- 35:56Speaker 1: those non native species. It's got the Pacific and the
- 36:01Speaker 1: too obvious. The correct answer is Alabama. I wrote down
- 36:09Speaker 1: like you falla and I don't know why, but it
- 36:11Speaker 1: hit me. But I'm thinking way thinking Alabama. It's home
- 36:16Speaker 1: to four hundred and fifty species of fish, which is
- 36:19Speaker 1: made up of about three hundred and fifty freshwater and
- 36:21Speaker 1: one hundred marine species. Biologists estimate that the Cacaba River
- 36:26Speaker 1: alone has more species of freshwater fish than the entire
- 36:29Speaker 1: state of Florida. Excuse me, the entire state of California,
- 36:32Speaker 1: the entire state of California. Are they counting all those
- 36:35Speaker 1: crazy non natives in Florida. I would assume so, because
- 36:38Speaker 1: when they count the Alabama and they're getting into all
- 36:40Speaker 1: these crazy catfish, little catfish ter yeah, in caves. So
- 36:47Speaker 1: do we have a winner? No, we have to go man,
- 36:55Speaker 1: But Steve and I should play in the tiebreaker any
- 36:58Speaker 1: time dead run up leader's racket. Yeah, now we have
- 37:02Speaker 1: the tiebreaker question. The question is numerica. Everybody can play along,
- 37:08Speaker 1: but the only answers that matter are Brody and Seth.
- 37:11Speaker 1: We have a chance for Brody to catch Steve with
- 37:13Speaker 1: the most wins of all time or Seth to get
- 37:16Speaker 1: on the leaderboard. Here's the question. North America's white tail
- 37:20Speaker 1: population hid an all time low in eighteen ninety. What
- 37:23Speaker 1: was it? I'll give you some help here. What is
- 37:30Speaker 1: pre European contact? There were twenty five million and today
- 37:33Speaker 1: they're about twenty five million. In eighteen ninety, when herd
- 37:36Speaker 1: sizes crashed, it's estimated that there were point one three
- 37:40Speaker 1: white tails per square mile across their range. So I'm
- 37:45Speaker 1: looking what their population was at their all time low
- 37:48Speaker 1: in eighteen ninety? Is this across North America? Are just
- 37:53Speaker 1: across North America? Steve said he was gonna play He
- 37:58Speaker 1: doesn't even have an answer. Well, I mean, I really
- 38:01Speaker 1: had to come up with one, but he's not feeling
- 38:03Speaker 1: too confident. I will give you guys a hand to embarrassed.
- 38:06Speaker 1: How many do it is just per square mile, a perk,
- 38:09Speaker 1: just the total population, but the perse square mile. Population
- 38:13Speaker 1: was point one three white tails per square mile, so
- 38:15Speaker 1: it's closest to the number we do not do. Prices
- 38:21Speaker 1: twenty five million before European contact and twenty five million today.
- 38:26Speaker 1: M hmm. You said you were going to give us
- 38:30Speaker 1: a clue. Well, Steve detested it very quickly. Here, I'll
- 38:33Speaker 1: give you the clue. It's between one and a million.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Oh and Brody e raised his answer, why would you
- 38:41Speaker 1: just do that? Yeah? I think yea robbed victory from
- 38:48Speaker 1: sess Ma really not his mom, but his ma, his mom.
- 38:51Speaker 1: I wasn't expecting such a specific clue there too, a
- 38:55Speaker 1: Now they're contested victory here. I don't think it's that
- 38:59Speaker 1: specific because there's a million answers. Very true, there are
- 39:04Speaker 1: ain't a million answers when we talk about states. Do
- 39:07Speaker 1: you guys have an answers? What you got? Seth? Does
- 39:09Speaker 1: the rest of the room want to play along? You
- 39:11Speaker 1: guys all give it? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 39:14Speaker 1: We have Seth saying four hundred and eighty eight thousand,
- 39:19Speaker 1: and Brody saying five hundred thousand. Guys's guesses we're within
- 39:23Speaker 1: twelve thousand of each other. The correct answer is three
- 39:28Speaker 1: hundred thousand, making Seth well pleasures on the winner's board.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Do you want to make an acceptance speech? Seth H,
- 39:39Speaker 1: Thank you Mike Wandal for being here today taking that
- 39:44Speaker 1: picture of I'm just glad I didn't lose Steve that
- 39:48Speaker 1: inspired him to get to where he's at today. Now, Seth,
- 39:50Speaker 1: where are you going to donate the one hundred dollars
- 39:53Speaker 1: to UM? Since all I can think about, uh coming
- 39:57Speaker 1: up a Turkey season. I'm going n wtf'd like it?
- 40:00Speaker 1: I like it. Congratulations South, Thank you, I'm glad it
