- 1:03Speaker 1: when John T. Edge, the host of True South, joins us.
- 1:07Speaker 1: The season premieres tomorrow. He will be with us here
- 1:11Speaker 1: in about 15 minutes. We have got also our.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Writers' Roundtable coming up. We are going to hear from
- 1:23Speaker 1: Marco Jones. We're going to hear from Eric Morris of
- 1:28Speaker 1: Oklahoma State. We're going to crown a weekly Friday's Fearless winner.
- 1:34Speaker 1: We have a tie, so hopefully the winners, one of
- 1:37Speaker 1: them are listening. And it's a full Monday show, and
- 1:42Speaker 1: we'll tell you what's on tap for the rest of
- 1:44Speaker 1: the week as we go along. The SEC announcing today
- 1:48Speaker 1: that the A & M- LSU game will kick off at 6.30
- 1:54Speaker 1: on ABC in Death Valley.
- 1:56Speaker 3: That is no surprise.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Second straight year, it will be a night game in
- 2:02Speaker 1: Baton Rouge.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Of course, A & M opens the.
- 2:05Speaker 1: SEC hosting Kentucky in what should be a real pleasant
- 2:11Speaker 1: afternoon game on ESPN on Saturday. Greg Sankey saying the
- 2:19Speaker 1: 24-team college football playoff is not a foregone conclusion. Said Sankey,
- 2:27Speaker 1: we participated in the conversation. That doesn't mean it will happen.
- 2:32Speaker 1: There's a media negotiation opportunity, which is an important piece
- 2:36Speaker 1: of information. And then we'll have an opportunity later in
- 2:40Speaker 1: the fall to make a decision about the future form.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Sankey is pumping brakes on public momentum, expanding the field
- 2:51Speaker 1: from 12 to 24. Not good news for Mike Norvell today.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Florida State has fired its athletic director, Mike Alford. President
- 3:02Speaker 1: Richard McCullough has appointed Bruce Warwick, senior associate AD to
- 3:08Speaker 1: be interim AD. The president says he loves Mike Norvell, but...
- 3:15Speaker 1: We will see what happens. Yesterday, the AP Top 25
- 3:21Speaker 1: came out.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Remember, it means nothing.
- 3:25Speaker 1: The Aggies are number 9, one spot ahead of Alabama
- 3:29Speaker 1: at 10. Ole Miss is 8, LSU 7, just in
- 3:33Speaker 1: time for the showdown this weekend. Ohio State drops one
- 3:38Speaker 1: spot from 5th to 6th. Miami is way ahead. Underrated,
- 3:46Speaker 1: they dropped from two to five. Indiana up to four.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Notre Dame stays at three. Georgia stays at two. And
- 3:57Speaker 1: Texas is at number one. If I were voting, Miami
- 4:03Speaker 1: would be one, Georgia two, Texas three, and then we
- 4:06Speaker 1: could discuss from there. Texas Tech is 13. Tennessee is 15.
- 4:11Speaker 1: SMU is 16. Michigan up to number 19 after their
- 4:18Speaker 1: win over Oklahoma. Missouri is 20. Oregon drops from 15
- 4:24Speaker 1: to 21. Houston in for the first time at 22.
- 4:26Speaker 1: OU falls from 13 to 24 after their loss to Michigan.
- 4:28Speaker 5: Let's see.
- 4:28Speaker 3: The Texas Rangers.
- 4:41Speaker 1: The woeful Texas Rangers have Josh Young back in the
- 4:45Speaker 1: lineup and Nate Evaldi in the bullpen and start a
- 4:49Speaker 1: nine-game homestand this week. They have 12 games left. They
- 4:56Speaker 1: are one game behind the Astros in the West, although
- 5:00Speaker 1: effectively they are two games back because Houston has the tiebreaker.
- 5:06Speaker 1: They're also two back in the wild-card chase behind Cleveland
- 5:10Speaker 1: State and Toronto. Speaking of the Astros, Josh Hader has
- 5:15Speaker 1: been named the Astros nominee for this year's Roberto Clemente Award.
- 5:23Speaker 1: It's the second time he's been nominated, a six-time All-Star,
- 5:30Speaker 1: and he's got a lot of activities behind his name
- 5:34Speaker 1: in Houston. And It seems this is just coming out,
- 5:40Speaker 1: but Thursday, A & M guard Rylan Griffin was granted
- 5:45Speaker 1: a temporary restraining order against the SEC and the NCAA. Griffin,
- 5:56Speaker 1: one of 42 players seeking an additional year of eligibility.
- 6:04Speaker 1: The Aggie men's program quoted.
- 6:07Speaker 3: By, let's.
- 6:11Speaker 1: See, who is it quoted by? I'll get this in
- 6:15Speaker 1: a minute. Griffin is enrolled at A & M. Remember,
- 6:20Speaker 1: he was on the team last year. He has a
- 6:23Speaker 1: two-time transfer from Alabama and Kentucky. Rylan Griffin is 104
- 6:29Speaker 1: years old, believe it or not. But may or may
- 6:36Speaker 1: not get another year of eligibility. We'll see what happens.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Bryson Warren won a TRO last Wednesday, and he is
- 6:50Speaker 1: in the transfer portal. So we'll see. I mean, be
- 6:56Speaker 1: a big get for Bucky to get Ryland Griffin back
- 7:01Speaker 1: because he's a pretty good player.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Yeah, he's pretty good.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Tomorrow, we have got a high school report. We'll hear
- 7:11Speaker 1: from Mike Elko on the show tomorrow.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I don't know. We may hear from Lane Kiffin.
- 7:20Speaker 1: We may hear from Pete Golding as we get ready
- 7:23Speaker 1: for that showdown Saturday. I'm actually going to talk to
- 7:26Speaker 1: John T. Edge because he lives in Oxford.
- 7:29Speaker 3: He may be special. sticking pins in Lane Kiffin voodoo dolls,
- 7:34Speaker 3: for all I know.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Scott Clendenin will be with us on Wednesday. And Thursday
- 7:44Speaker 1: and Friday, I'm going to be on assignment working for you,
- 7:48Speaker 1: the listener. Thursday, Jason Cornelius is going to be in.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And Friday, we will have our usual cast of characters.
- 8:01Speaker 1: with Ryan and Caleb. So we got that going on
- 8:05Speaker 1: for us, which is nice. We have got the Writers'
- 8:08Speaker 1: Roundtable coming up in the second hour of the program.
- 8:14Speaker 1: We're going to take a little break. We're also going
- 8:20Speaker 1: to give away a prize for our Friday's Fearless. We
- 8:26Speaker 1: had two pickers this week pick the exact score of
- 8:33Speaker 1: Texas and Ohio State in the tiebreaker.
- 8:37Speaker 3: They both went eight and two. That was the best
- 8:40Speaker 3: record this week.
- 8:43Speaker 1: The pros just absolutely killed me, which just sucks. So
- 8:53Speaker 1: we're going to hear from one of them, we hope,
- 8:55Speaker 1: coming up in the next 20 or 30 minutes. We'll
- 9:00Speaker 1: call their names out and have them call in and
- 9:03Speaker 1: give away a prize on Friday's Fearless. We'll tell you
- 9:06Speaker 1: about this week's Friday's Fearless, which is up and ready
- 9:10Speaker 1: to go. I've already made my picks. I'm already second-guessing them.
- 9:15Speaker 1: We'll see what happens with that. We'll come back and
- 9:19Speaker 1: have John T. Edge here in a minute after this
- 9:21Speaker 1: for ANCO Insurance.
- 9:24Speaker 6: Anco Insurance is now a part of Hub International, bringing
- 9:27Speaker 6: you more choices, better value, and even greater expertise. While

- 10:25Speaker 8: That's my name.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Hey, welcome back. Thanks for being with us.
- 10:55Speaker 9: We're going to jump out to the Players Fund Center
- 10:59Speaker 9: phone line and visit with the host of True South,
- 11:02Speaker 9: the Emmy Award-winning True South.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Which premieres Season 9 tomorrow night on the SEC Network
- 11:26Speaker 1: at 7 o'clock Texas time.
- 11:28Speaker 3: He is John T.
- 11:29Speaker 5: Edge.
- 11:30Speaker 3: John T., how the heck are you?
- 11:32Speaker 5: I'm doing great. It's great to be back with you, sir.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I'll always look forward to it. Let me ask you this.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Are you putting pins in your Lane Kiffin voodoo doll
- 11:42Speaker 1: this week down in Oxford?
- 11:46Speaker 5: I would be soft pedaling it if I didn't say
- 11:50Speaker 5: some people were. I really don't give a damn at
- 11:52Speaker 5: this point. I just want to play football and beat
- 11:54Speaker 5: their ass.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Well, is it going to be the kind of atmosphere
- 12:01Speaker 1: we think it's going to be Saturday night?
- 12:04Speaker 5: I can tell you this, is that my wife, who
- 12:06Speaker 5: loves football and looks forward to being up in the Grove,
- 12:10Speaker 5: is talking about wearing a bicycle helmet because she's afraid
- 12:12Speaker 5: of the rowdiness of what we will find once we
- 12:18Speaker 5: head towards the stadium.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Well, the good news is nobody will have had a
- 12:23Speaker 1: chance to drink all day before the game Saturday night.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Lord, Lord, this is all true. I just hope our
- 12:30Speaker 5: fans rise to the occasion and just focus on the
- 12:33Speaker 5: game instead.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Of Do you go to the Grove? Do you tailgate?
- 12:47Speaker 10: Do.
- 12:47Speaker 5: We're not in the Grove. There's the Grove and there's
- 12:50Speaker 5: the Circle. The Circle is a little less.
- 12:53Speaker 11: Yes.
- 12:56Speaker 5: Clouded? Dense, dense, yes. So we're not even in the Circle.
- 13:01Speaker 5: We're north of the Circle a little bit.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Okay, okay.
- 13:04Speaker 5: It's a big group of friends, including my buddy Wright Thompson,
- 13:08Speaker 5: with whom we make True South. And so... We watch
- 13:12Speaker 5: TV and drink a few cocktails and hang out and
- 13:16Speaker 5: children run and throw footballs.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Nice.
- 13:18Speaker 5: It's just really mellow and lovely.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Will you go to the game?
- 13:23Speaker 5: If I get a ticket, if you're listening here and
- 13:26Speaker 5: you've got a couple of tickets.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Come on, man. Come on. You're John T.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Edge.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Call your buddies at ESPN and get a ticket.
- 13:36Speaker 5: I never pull that on them, except for the Georgia game.
- 13:39Speaker 5: I do ask for– but I don't even ask ESPN
- 13:43Speaker 5: for that. I ask other friends. But that's the only–
- 13:47Speaker 5: Since I flunked out of the University of Georgia and
- 13:50Speaker 5: graduated from the University of Mississippi, I always want to
- 13:53Speaker 5: go to that game.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Well, yeah, no, I get that part, but I'm shocked.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I know you have people, John T. I don't have
- 14:01Speaker 1: anybody left anymore. I've lived too long, but I know
- 14:07Speaker 1: you have people.
- 14:09Speaker 5: I don't know about that, Chip, but I think you've
- 14:11Speaker 5: got plenty of people.
- 14:12Speaker 3: All right.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Let's talk about True South. Is this true it's the
- 14:16Speaker 1: ninth season?
- 14:18Speaker 5: Yeah, man. It kind of boggles my mind that we're
- 14:21Speaker 5: nine years into this. I mean, I can remember the
- 14:25Speaker 5: first episode filming in Athens, Georgia. It ended up being
- 14:31Speaker 5: the third episode we showed, but it was the first
- 14:32Speaker 5: episode we filmed. And, you know, we didn't have an
- 14:36Speaker 5: auspicious beginning. At the end of that filming four days
- 14:41Speaker 5: in Athens, Georgia, a Chevy Tahoe crossed the center line
- 14:46Speaker 5: and hit my little mini head on. Right now we're
- 14:50Speaker 5: in it. We didn't quite walk away from it, but
- 14:53Speaker 5: we limped away from it. We were very lucky. So
- 14:56Speaker 5: even that first season, it's like, is this something we're
- 14:59Speaker 5: going to be able to do again? And the faith
- 15:02Speaker 5: that the SEC network has put in us and the
- 15:06Speaker 5: connections that people who watch this show, you know, I get,
- 15:09Speaker 5: I don't know, I get a dozen or more letters
- 15:15Speaker 5: a week from people who watch the show and it
- 15:18Speaker 5: made them think about their love of their place or
- 15:21Speaker 5: a relationship that had frayed and they were bringing back
- 15:27Speaker 5: into their heart and their family and their routine or
- 15:32Speaker 5: a favorite restaurant that they won't need to know about.
- 15:36Speaker 5: The kind of community that's built out of this is really...
- 15:40Speaker 5: really affirming and really humbling for us.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Well, it's been eight years already. If people haven't listened
- 15:48Speaker 1: to me by now, I can't help them. You know
- 15:52Speaker 1: it's one of my favorite shows on television. You guys
- 15:56Speaker 1: just do a fantastic job telling stories year in and
- 15:59Speaker 1: year out and just finding people. And props to you
- 16:05Speaker 1: and Wright and your production crew for being able to
- 16:10Speaker 1: to tell just amazing stories throughout the South?
- 16:15Speaker 5: Well, my favorite thing is watching our crew, Bluefoot Entertainment,
- 16:20Speaker 5: pull together this amazing crew, most of whom have been
- 16:22Speaker 5: with us from the very beginning, and to watch them
- 16:25Speaker 5: step into a world they don't necessarily know. Like right now,
- 16:27Speaker 5: I've often been to these places and know these people,
- 16:31Speaker 5: but the crew shows up with cameras and mics and
- 16:35Speaker 5: and then, you know, leans in to listen to these stories,
- 16:38Speaker 5: and they fall in love with these places, and they
- 16:40Speaker 5: fall in love with these people. And that's the reason
- 16:42Speaker 5: the show is good is because of how darn good
- 16:44Speaker 5: our crew is.
- 16:45Speaker 1: What have you learned about your part of the country,
- 16:50Speaker 1: John T., while you've been doing this show?
- 16:55Speaker 5: The thing I keep relearning is, you know, we're in
- 16:59Speaker 5: a really– fractious American moment. Um, people are, are unkind
- 17:06Speaker 5: to each other. People, um, are suspicious of others intentions.
- 17:13Speaker 5: People are, um, you know, this is, this is like
- 17:17Speaker 5: a blood sport moment and it's not pretty. And yet
- 17:21Speaker 5: when I moved through the world, making true South and
- 17:24Speaker 5: when I stop in these small towns and get to
- 17:26Speaker 5: know people, um, I fall in love with the South
- 17:29Speaker 5: all over again, and I wonder what we're all fighting about.
- 17:35Speaker 1: You have been to larger cities and found similar stories,
- 17:42Speaker 1: I might add, but there's something about these smaller communities.
- 17:48Speaker 1: What is it about the smaller communities, John T., that
- 17:52Speaker 1: you find these people that are basically just living life,
- 17:56Speaker 1: working hard, running restaurants, doing life.
- 18:00Speaker 3: I mean, isn't that America?
- 18:04Speaker 5: It is, and it's, you know, I mean, even when
- 18:07Speaker 5: we do make an episode in a larger town, like
- 18:12Speaker 5: we've got an episode coming up this season in Atlanta,
- 18:15Speaker 5: but it's set on Buford Highway. It's set on a
- 18:17Speaker 5: six-mile stretch of highway that runs north out of the
- 18:22Speaker 5: city of And it's really two shopping centers across the
- 18:27Speaker 5: street from each other, Asian Plaza and Pine Tree Plaza.
- 18:30Speaker 5: They're directly across the street from each other. So it's
- 18:33Speaker 5: a really tight, confined, and it's like its own neighborhood
- 18:36Speaker 5: in Atlanta. The second episode, that's the third episode of
- 18:40Speaker 5: the season, the second episode is set in and around Hazen, Arkansas,
- 18:45Speaker 5: which is a really small town. in the Grand Prairie
- 18:49Speaker 5: area of the Arkansas Delta, so eastern Arkansas, the duck-hunting
- 18:55Speaker 5: capital of America, if not the, one of the. And,
- 19:00Speaker 5: you know, it's a tiny place, but it's a place
- 19:03Speaker 5: with a big story. And, you know, everyday folk and
- 19:07Speaker 5: billionaires from across the world fly into this little place
- 19:12Speaker 5: of Hazen, Arkansas, to go and try and kill ducks
- 19:14Speaker 5: and eat really good catfish at a place called Murray's
- 19:18Speaker 5: and eat really good barbecue sandwiches at a place called
- 19:21Speaker 5: Craig Brothers.
- 19:22Speaker 3: How do you not weigh 400 pounds?
- 19:26Speaker 5: I have a girdle.
- 19:27Speaker 3: I do weigh 400.
- 19:31Speaker 5: I mean, when I'm researching, I'll eat six or eight
- 19:37Speaker 5: times a day, but I don't eat the whole meal.
- 19:39Speaker 5: I take a bite and I politely cover the rest
- 19:42Speaker 5: with my napkin You know, I'm trying not to put
- 19:47Speaker 5: on too much weight. I'm trying to, because I want
- 19:49Speaker 5: to keep eating and drinking so uh that's the continuous
- 19:53Speaker 5: struggle did.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Do you find that while you're taping you gain weight
- 19:58Speaker 1: and then you have to come home and and try
- 20:00Speaker 1: to do something to maybe take a little of it
- 20:02Speaker 1: off Yeah, my wife.
- 20:04Speaker 5: Blair, talks about welcoming me home with spa cuisine. And
- 20:07Speaker 5: that just means, like, lots of salads and vegetables.
- 20:10Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:11Speaker 3: I mean, that makes sense.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So we're starting tomorrow night in Muscle Shoals.
- 20:19Speaker 5: We are indeed. So we're in the Shoals proper, which
- 20:23Speaker 5: is Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia. Florence and Sheffield.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Which I knew nothing about these four, these quartet of cities,
- 20:31Speaker 1: as you told. I mean, I know Muscle Shoals and
- 20:34Speaker 1: I've read books and I've done stories on all the
- 20:38Speaker 1: music that came out of there. I had no idea
- 20:41Speaker 1: there were like four little towns together or close to
- 20:44Speaker 1: each other.
- 20:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 20:45Speaker 5: And it's one of those really like if you haven't
- 20:48Speaker 5: been up there and you're listening to this and you're
- 20:49Speaker 5: thinking about a weekend trip. It's a beautiful weekend trip
- 20:53Speaker 5: for us. It's two hours from Oxford, but it's also
- 20:56Speaker 5: like an hour and a half from the National Airport
- 20:58Speaker 5: if you're flying. And, you know, Florence, the largest, it's
- 21:02Speaker 5: high on the bluff, the Tennessee River. And a lot
- 21:05Speaker 5: of this episode focuses on the Tennessee as a river
- 21:09Speaker 5: and what it made possible there. You know, the TVA,
- 21:14Speaker 5: the Tennessee Valley Authority, begins there in many ways because of,
- 21:19Speaker 5: the development of a big dam across that river. That
- 21:21Speaker 5: dam drove hydroelectric power. It drove textile manufacturing where they
- 21:26Speaker 5: made the t-shirts. So, you know, the music story, like
- 21:30Speaker 5: everybody from the Rolling Stones to Aretha Franklin to, to
- 21:35Speaker 5: Paul Simon, um, recorded there. It was also, go ahead.
- 21:40Speaker 3: The Beatles. They were there.
- 21:42Speaker 5: I didn't know that.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 21:45Speaker 5: I'd see is there's much to learn. Um, But, you know,
- 21:49Speaker 5: it was also at the same time it was the
- 21:51Speaker 5: hit recording capital of the U.S., it was also the
- 21:53Speaker 5: T-shirt capital of the U.S. So all the band merch
- 21:57Speaker 5: that you see, all that begins there, too, because that's
- 22:01Speaker 5: where they're making the band T-shirts were printed and sold
- 22:03Speaker 5: on tour was in that same place. And that was
- 22:07Speaker 5: the big industry there was textile manufacturing. And then after NAFTA,
- 22:10Speaker 5: it went away. And you see this area, the shoulders
- 22:13Speaker 5: kind of collapsed. building what's next. And that's, in a
- 22:17Speaker 5: lot of ways, what the show's about. That's what the
- 22:19Speaker 5: South is about. It's like, what comes next? It always is.
- 22:25Speaker 1: You have written about food for a long time and
- 22:29Speaker 1: been around it. I can't imagine right now what these
- 22:36Speaker 1: little mom-and-pop restaurants are going through to try to make
- 22:41Speaker 1: a living.
- 22:43Speaker 5: Yeah, it's hard. It's hard. You know, price of inputs,
- 22:48Speaker 5: price of all the things that you're cooking on the
- 22:51Speaker 5: griddle or frying in the basket, all that's going up.
- 22:55Speaker 5: And so is the cost of transport and everything else.
- 22:59Speaker 5: You see a lot of old guard places hanging it up.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Yes.
- 23:03Speaker 5: And, you know, I don't think that our little show
- 23:07Speaker 5: can have any impact on that, but I think it
- 23:10Speaker 5: becomes more important than ever to spend your money with
- 23:13Speaker 5: local people instead of a franchise spend your money with
- 23:18Speaker 5: you know a mom and pop instead of a concept
- 23:21Speaker 5: um and you know because we need these places we
- 23:24Speaker 5: don't want we don't want to lose these places and
- 23:27Speaker 5: the best way to support these places is spend your
- 23:29Speaker 5: money in these places well we.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Know there was good music and is good music around
- 23:34Speaker 1: muscle shows uh is there is there another stop that
- 23:40Speaker 1: that surprised you with with the music because we've talked
- 23:43Speaker 1: about this every year and i part of what i
- 23:45Speaker 1: love is you guys find local artists and incorporate that
- 23:49Speaker 1: into the show the fourth.
- 23:51Speaker 5: Show of the year is um set in rain louisiana
- 23:55Speaker 5: which is just um just west of lafayette okay your
- 23:58Speaker 5: way okay um and rain is is one of the
- 24:03Speaker 5: crawfish capitals of the u.s i've I've never gotten boiled
- 24:08Speaker 5: crawfish and been able to crack a claw and pull
- 24:11Speaker 5: meat out of it. But I was able to do that.
- 24:13Speaker 5: There was monstrous crawfish. Um, the band that you'll see
- 24:18Speaker 5: that we fell in love with, we were down there,
- 24:20Speaker 5: share a leaf. Um, um, and, uh, that, um, with the,
- 24:28Speaker 5: they play kind of modern Cajun.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Okay.
- 24:32Speaker 5: Um, and we filmed them in, uh, kind of juke
- 24:38Speaker 5: joint bar on the edge of Lafayette that is just remarkable.
- 24:44Speaker 5: And I think everybody who watches Cher Elise will want
- 24:47Speaker 5: to go see them live after seeing them play in
- 24:50Speaker 5: this little juke on the outskirts of Lafayette.
- 24:53Speaker 1: After eight years, and now nine years because you've taped
- 24:56Speaker 1: this season, are you surprised sometimes when you walk into
- 25:03Speaker 1: one of these juke joints or one of these little restaurants?
- 25:08Speaker 5: By what?
- 25:09Speaker 3: By everything. I mean, by the food, by the people,
- 25:13Speaker 3: by the music.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Are there still surprises around the corner?
- 25:16Speaker 5: Oh, yeah. I mean, you know, I spend a lot
- 25:19Speaker 5: of time going to restaurants I've never been to before.
- 25:23Speaker 5: And every time I walk in, I'm expecting the food's
- 25:28Speaker 5: going to be great. Yes. But I'd say 30% of
- 25:31Speaker 5: the time it's not.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Yes.
- 25:34Speaker 5: I'd say probably 30%. 50% of the time it's not.
- 25:37Speaker 12: Really?
- 25:37Speaker 5: Okay. No, I mean, you have to, like, to drive
- 25:42Speaker 5: the road in search of great food is to believe
- 25:45Speaker 5: that every tumbledown place is actually going to be a,
- 25:48Speaker 5: you know, a secret shining star. Yeah. And then, you know,
- 25:51Speaker 5: also to have the clarity to realize, like, oh, this
- 25:56Speaker 5: is bad. Like, that fry grease they put these fries
- 26:00Speaker 5: in is rancid.
- 26:00Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 26:01Speaker 5: You've got to see with clarity to step aside from
- 26:04Speaker 5: kind of the nostalgia that traveled on heavy so what.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Happens what happens in that case john when you walk
- 26:10Speaker 1: into a place that you expected to to be show
- 26:13Speaker 1: worthy and it turns out not to be well i
- 26:15Speaker 1: just go to.
- 26:16Speaker 5: The next place i mean you know it's it's um
- 26:19Speaker 5: you know i follow people's leads people you know who
- 26:22Speaker 5: listen to your show or watch our show yeah will
- 26:25Speaker 5: call me or email me and say go try this
- 26:27Speaker 5: place go try this place right keep a big google
- 26:29Speaker 5: map with all those places and i go try to
- 26:32Speaker 5: try to get there yeah you know i mean it's
- 26:35Speaker 5: I just need to get my reps in. I'm a
- 26:37Speaker 5: football player.
- 26:38Speaker 3: I've got to get my reps in. You have a
- 26:41Speaker 3: tough job, I know. Believe me, I know the travel.
- 26:45Speaker 1: I know everything that's involved in putting a 30-minute show.
- 26:49Speaker 5: I love the road. I love coming home to my
- 26:52Speaker 5: family here in Oxford, but I also love wandering and
- 26:56Speaker 5: not knowing what's going to be around the bend.
- 26:59Speaker 1: It's probably the wrong time to ask you, and you
- 27:02Speaker 1: probably don't even know the answer to this, but I
- 27:05Speaker 1: hope we're going to have a season 10.
- 27:08Speaker 5: We're already planning for season 10.
- 27:10Speaker 8: Awesome.
- 27:11Speaker 5: With any luck, one of those locations is going to
- 27:14Speaker 5: be Texas. I scouted something about a month ago, and
- 27:17Speaker 5: I think it's going to work, and I'm excited to
- 27:20Speaker 5: bring it back to Texas.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Well, we mentioned cities. Was it last year you did Austin?
- 27:26Speaker 12: Or the year before?
- 27:27Speaker 5: I think it was the year before.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Okay.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Well, to tell you what a– and I texted you
- 27:34Speaker 1: about this, but what a great storyteller you are. You
- 27:38Speaker 1: go to places that I've known about all my life
- 27:42Speaker 1: and find places. And sometimes you find places that I
- 27:45Speaker 1: would have sent you to, but sometimes you don't.
- 27:48Speaker 3: And I'm going, how did I miss that?
- 27:50Speaker 1: So that's a testimony to what you guys do to
- 27:53Speaker 1: be able to find these kind of places.
- 27:57Speaker 5: Well, we love the search and we love, I like
- 28:00Speaker 5: being surprised. I like falling in love with a place.
- 28:04Speaker 5: That's the joy of this. Step in somewhere you didn't
- 28:08Speaker 5: know before, just by dumb luck, you pull over the
- 28:11Speaker 5: car and then the heavens open up when you open
- 28:14Speaker 5: the door.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Well, I can't thank you enough. I'm always super excited.
- 28:19Speaker 1: I have been watching, and because we have the premiere
- 28:24Speaker 1: tomorrow night, obviously True South has been playing a lot
- 28:28Speaker 1: the last couple of three weeks. And I've seen all
- 28:32Speaker 1: of them, and I'll sit, and it's like a movie,
- 28:35Speaker 1: John T. I go, well, I've already seen this, but
- 28:39Speaker 1: then if I wait two minutes, it's too late.
- 28:42Speaker 13: I'm hooked.
- 28:43Speaker 5: Well, that's our director, Tim Horgan. I just got off
- 28:46Speaker 5: the phone with Tim before I picked up the phone
- 28:49Speaker 5: with you, and he lives and breathes this stuff, and
- 28:52Speaker 5: he's a visual genius, and he knows how to hook you,
- 28:54Speaker 5: and he hooks me, too.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Well, it's pretty obvious.
- 28:58Speaker 1: The work you guys do is Emmy-worthy, for sure. I
- 29:03Speaker 1: always appreciate the time, John Teeth.
- 29:06Speaker 5: You too, Chip. I always enjoy these conversations. Thank you
- 29:08Speaker 5: for paying attention to what we do.
- 29:09Speaker 3: You bet. It's John T. Edge from True South.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Again, tomorrow night, the premiere of Season 9 at 7
- 29:19Speaker 1: o'clock on the SEC Network. I'll tell you again, if
- 29:24Speaker 1: you haven't watched the show, you are missing out. It's
- 29:28Speaker 1: one of the best things on television. And I say
- 29:32Speaker 1: that without hesitation. And by now, I hope you know
- 29:37Speaker 1: me well enough to know that if it wasn't true,
- 29:40Speaker 1: I wouldn't tell you that, right? I'm just, if you
- 29:43Speaker 1: haven't found true self, that's on you, start watching it.
- 29:47Speaker 1: And if you'll just set it up on your recording,
- 29:51Speaker 1: like I said, they play old ones almost every day
- 29:55Speaker 1: on the ESPN family, whether it's, you know, The Ocho, ESPN.
- 30:03Speaker 3: News, ESPNU, the main channel.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Just put True South in and thank me later if
- 30:12Speaker 1: you haven't done that already.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Okay. Galleria is, you know, it's an award winner. And
- 30:21Speaker 3: it has been since they opened in 1993.
- 30:23Speaker 5: Okay.
- 30:26Speaker 1: They opened a little bit before I started on this program,
- 30:33Speaker 1: and I have known about them all these 33-plus years.
- 30:38Speaker 1: I have used their services. I have bought their gift
- 30:41Speaker 1: certificates for my wife over the years, whether it's a
- 30:46Speaker 1: special occasion or whatever. you know, a stocking stuffer for

- 33:31Speaker 3: gentlemen or not, but.
- 33:34Speaker 1: They are eight and two in week two, and they
- 33:37Speaker 1: pick the exact. I don't know if we've ever had
- 33:41Speaker 1: anybody pick, I mean, tie with the exact scores. We've
- 33:46Speaker 1: had exact scores picked before, but I've got two people
- 33:50Speaker 1: who picked 24-23 on Texas-Ohio State.
- 33:54Speaker 3: Russell Martin John Pettit.
- 33:59Speaker 1: If either one of you is listening right now, or
- 34:02Speaker 1: if you know them, call them and tell them, hey,
- 34:05Speaker 1: I'm talking about them on the radio. The first one's
- 34:08Speaker 1: going to get a $ 50 gift certificate from Rudy's Barbecue.
- 34:13Speaker 14: 693-1150.
- 34:13Speaker 12: 693-1150.
- 34:13Speaker 3: Russell Martin John Pettit.
- 34:22Speaker 1: The first one that calls is going to be this
- 34:26Speaker 1: week's winner.
- 34:27Speaker 3: I already have the week three games up. Brian and Rudder.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Oh, my. That is the tiebreaker this week. College Station
- 34:38Speaker 1: at Pflugerville Weiss. North Texas at Texas State. Houston at
- 34:42Speaker 1: Texas Tech.
- 34:44Speaker 3: SMU Louisville. See, it gets harder. Utah State, Utah. LSU
- 34:49Speaker 3: Ole Miss. West Virginia at Virginia. The Bengals against the Texans.
- 34:56Speaker 1: And the Redskins and the Cowboys.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I said it.
- 35:01Speaker 1: The Redskins against the Cowboys. There's 10 games this week.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Go on chiphoward.com and make your picks between now and
- 35:15Speaker 1: 5 o'clock on Friday.
- 35:17Speaker 3: Now and 5 o'clock on Friday. Make your picks. Okay?
- 35:23Speaker 3: 10 games. Week 3. There we go. Connor, do we
- 35:30Speaker 3: have a caller? Do we have a caller?
- 35:33Speaker 5: No?
- 35:33Speaker 12: Okay.
- 35:35Speaker 3: All right.
- 35:36Speaker 1: So I'm just saying, Russell or John, Russell Martin, John Pettit,
- 35:41Speaker 1: if you know them, say, hey, you better call in
- 35:44Speaker 1: so you can win this week. And we will go
- 35:48Speaker 1: from there. Coming up, we're going to hear from Marco Jones.
- 35:54Speaker 3: Which one? Who is it? Who is it?
- 35:59Speaker 14: Hey, this is Russell.
- 36:00Speaker 3: Russell, how are you?
- 36:02Speaker 12: I'm good.
- 36:03Speaker 3: How are you? Well, you were pretty good this week.
- 36:07Speaker 5: Yeah, we did all right.
- 36:08Speaker 3: I mean, you did better than all right. You picked
- 36:10Speaker 3: the exact score.
- 36:12Speaker 17: Yeah, that's just pure luck, though.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Well, duh. I think my score was pretty close, but
- 36:18Speaker 1: I missed an extra game. How'd you do the first week?
- 36:23Speaker 17: Pretty good. I think I'm at 15 points overall based
- 36:27Speaker 17: on what my brother told me. I haven't checked in,
- 36:29Speaker 17: but my brother was checking it for me.
- 36:30Speaker 3: Okay. And when do you typically make your picks?
- 36:35Speaker 17: Whenever I get a free minute in the week.
- 36:37Speaker 3: And when you're thinking about it. Okay. Good enough.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Hey, you're right there then. If you've got 15, you're
- 36:42Speaker 1: pretty close to the top. You're not at the top,
- 36:45Speaker 1: but you're close, Russell. Have you played every year? No.
- 36:50Speaker 17: I think my dad, my brother, and sister and I
- 36:52Speaker 17: have played for like the last four or five years,
- 36:54Speaker 17: I think.
- 36:55Speaker 3: Well, you know, I hope one of you gets their
- 36:57Speaker 3: name on the cup. That's why we all play, you know.
- 37:01Speaker 17: Yeah, no, it's always fun. Always provides some entertainment.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Awesome.
- 37:05Speaker 17: Something extra to kind of watch out for, you know,
- 37:07Speaker 17: throughout the week.
- 37:07Speaker 3: Russell, I'm going to put you on hold.
- 37:10Speaker 1: I have a $ 50 gift certificate from Rudy's to get
- 37:13Speaker 1: to you. I appreciate you playing, and congratulations being the
- 37:17Speaker 1: Week 2 winner.
- 37:17Speaker 17: Appreciate it.
- 37:19Speaker 5: Thanks, Chip.
- 37:19Speaker 3: Yep. That's Russell Martin.
- 37:22Speaker 1: And Connor, if you'll tell him how to pick up
- 37:26Speaker 1: his prize, that'll be great.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Okay. Let's go forward. Do we need to go forward?
- 37:34Speaker 3: We need to take a break. Let's go forward.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Let's hear from Marco Jones postgame on the win against
- 37:45Speaker 1: Arizona State Saturday.
- 37:47Speaker 8: Okay.
- 37:47Speaker 18: Marco, just first, take us through the pick six. When's
- 37:50Speaker 18: the last time you had a pick six?
- 37:53Speaker 19: Yeah, last time I had a pick six, high school,
- 37:57Speaker 19: definitely high school, like senior year maybe, I think.
- 38:02Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, it was cool.
- 38:03Speaker 19: Like, it was just, I mean, you know, that play
- 38:05Speaker 19: doesn't happen without TJ. I mean, he did a great job,
- 38:07Speaker 19: you know, gets home, like does everything he needs to do, reaches,
- 38:11Speaker 19: gets the ball up.
- 38:12Speaker 5: In the air.
- 38:13Speaker 19: And then I just kind of just, like, time kind
- 38:14Speaker 19: of just slowed down a little bit, and I was like,
- 38:16Speaker 19: I just got to go get it. And I went
- 38:17Speaker 19: and got it and just started running, and then I
- 38:19Speaker 19: was in the end zone. So it was kind of
- 38:20Speaker 19: a blur, but it was cool.
- 38:22Speaker 18: And then you guys talked all offseason about wanting to
- 38:24Speaker 18: force more turnovers this season. Just what did it mean
- 38:26Speaker 18: for you guys as a defense to kind of see
- 38:28Speaker 18: that come to fruition the way it did in the
- 38:30Speaker 18: fourth quarter?
- 38:31Speaker 12: Yeah, that's big for us.
- 38:33Speaker 19: I mean, you know, I feel like last year we
- 38:35Speaker 19: didn't get as many as we would have liked for sure.
- 38:37Speaker 12: And, you know, like– It's still early.
- 38:40Speaker 19: We want to still create as many turnovers as human possible.
- 38:45Speaker 19: I think for us, it's just a start, the first
- 38:48Speaker 19: step to a whole staircase. I think that it's something
- 38:50Speaker 19: that we're looking forward to and we're excited about, but
- 38:52Speaker 19: we just got to keep building on it.
- 38:54Speaker 8: On the right-hand side with Travis?
- 38:56Speaker 4: Were you nervous at all anybody might catch you? Did
- 38:57Speaker 4: you look up the Jumbotron or anything, or did you
- 38:59Speaker 4: think you were smooth sailing?
- 39:01Speaker 12: Nah. When I was running, I was definitely looking back.
- 39:03Speaker 19: I kept peeking back because I felt somebody running behind me.
- 39:07Speaker 19: And I was like, all right, I just cannot let
- 39:09Speaker 19: them catch me. So I just was just running as
- 39:10Speaker 19: fast as I could. So, yeah, that was it.
- 39:13Speaker 4: And the guys who made an impact on the game, you, TK, Julio,
- 39:16Speaker 4: guys that have kind of had to earn their spot
- 39:19Speaker 4: in the team this season, do you feel like this
- 39:21Speaker 4: was like a little bit of a prove-it game for
- 39:23Speaker 4: some of y'all guys or a payoff game for the
- 39:25Speaker 4: work that some of y'all put in?
- 39:28Speaker 19: I think for us, we never look at it as
- 39:31Speaker 19: a personal thing. We never sit here and try to
- 39:34Speaker 19: prove ourselves or anything.
- 39:35Speaker 12: That's what fall camp is for. Fall camp is for
- 39:37Speaker 12: us to grind and.
- 39:38Speaker 19: Really make a name for ourselves. I think this game
- 39:41Speaker 19: is really, when we play on Saturdays, it's for the team.
- 39:44Speaker 19: We just got to do whatever we can to win.
- 39:46Speaker 19: I think that's just what we did best today. and just,
- 39:49Speaker 19: you know, all the guys, young guys, older guys, guys
- 39:52Speaker 19: who played a lot, guys who haven't, just all just
- 39:53Speaker 19: played as one team, just did their thing and just
- 39:56Speaker 19: played together and got a good win.
- 39:57Speaker 12: Right side with Christy.
- 40:00Speaker 20: How proud are you guys as a defense to turn
- 40:02Speaker 20: a close game into a blowout within, like, five minutes, basically?
- 40:06Speaker 19: Yeah, I mean, it's definitely something that's good, like, I mean,
- 40:09Speaker 19: you always love games that, like, you know, aren't close, but,
- 40:13Speaker 19: you know, obviously with every game there's learning, there's learning opportunities,
- 40:16Speaker 19: there's things to grow on, so You just got to
- 40:18Speaker 19: take it as a learning opportunity, right? Like, because not
- 40:21Speaker 19: every game is going to be a blowout game, right? And, like,
- 40:23Speaker 19: you got to think of, like, you know, what would
- 40:25Speaker 19: happen if those plays didn't happen. And so I think that,
- 40:27Speaker 19: you know, just for us, we just got to just
- 40:29Speaker 19: look at it as a learning opportunity, you know, enjoy
- 40:30Speaker 19: the W, but just keep moving on. And, you know,
- 40:33Speaker 19: we got to just take it week by week, day
- 40:34Speaker 19: by day.
- 40:36Speaker 12: Left side with Alex.
- 40:38Speaker 18: What were they doing well in the first half and
- 40:39Speaker 18: then early into that third quarter that was really keeping
- 40:41Speaker 18: you guys maybe on your heels there on defense?
- 40:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 40:44Speaker 19: I mean, they just have, you know, they have really
- 40:46Speaker 19: good players. They have a lot of guys that are
- 40:48Speaker 19: going to go play at the next level. They have
- 40:49Speaker 19: really good coaching staff. I think they, you know, they,
- 40:52Speaker 19: they kind of just find your weakness and just go out,
- 40:54Speaker 19: go at it. And I mean, you know, I think
- 40:57Speaker 19: they just kind of just like try to do things
- 40:59Speaker 19: that maybe they don't normally do, or maybe they do.
- 41:02Speaker 19: And just, you know, just keep picking away at it
- 41:04Speaker 19: and getting small gains, small gains, and then, you know,
- 41:06Speaker 19: turn it into something big. So I think that's just
- 41:07Speaker 19: what they did well. They just, you know, and they
- 41:09Speaker 19: execute really well. They're a really good, well-coached team, got
- 41:12Speaker 19: a lot of like disciplined players and they just execute
- 41:14Speaker 19: and everybody does their job.
- 41:15Speaker 12: So I think that's what was important for them.
- 41:17Speaker 18: And then Elko basically said that you guys, I mean,
- 41:20Speaker 18: what y'all were running in toward the end of the
- 41:21Speaker 18: third quarter into the fourth quarter was like maybe very
- 41:24Speaker 18: different from what y'all had started the game with. What
- 41:26Speaker 18: were maybe the biggest schematic changes that y'all made that,
- 41:28Speaker 18: that started paying off toward the end?
- 41:31Speaker 19: Um, I mean, yeah, it was just, it was just
- 41:33Speaker 19: different from the game plan a little bit, right? Like
- 41:35Speaker 19: you just, we just make adjustments like everybody does at halftime. Um,
- 41:39Speaker 19: I mean, I just think just, you know, just guys
- 41:41Speaker 19: understanding why we're doing some of the things. I think
- 41:43Speaker 19: that was kind of the biggest thing. But that's really it.
- 41:46Speaker 19: I think, you know, the changes were big, but they
- 41:49Speaker 19: weren't things that we haven't done before.
- 41:51Speaker 8: Right side with Peter. What happened on the fake punt
- 41:55Speaker 8: for them?
- 41:58Speaker 19: I mean, you know, they just lined up in the
- 41:59Speaker 19: formation that they don't normally line up in. And, you know,
- 42:03Speaker 19: we kind of just called it out and just guys
- 42:04Speaker 19: went to go fill the hole. And we made a
- 42:06Speaker 19: good play and stopped them on the fourth down.
- 42:08Speaker 1: How– early do you guys recognize different formations and start
- 42:12Speaker 1: communicating with each other on that?
- 42:13Speaker 19: Yeah, I mean, I think for Arizona State, they have
- 42:16Speaker 19: a very, like, specific formation kind of that they run.
- 42:18Speaker 19: So it was, you know, when they weren't lined up
- 42:20Speaker 19: in that, it just was a telltale sign. Like, as
- 42:22Speaker 19: soon as they broke the huddle, it was like, all right,
- 42:24Speaker 19: that guy's not where he normally is. But, you know,
- 42:27Speaker 19: for some teams, it's not like that. But just for
- 42:29Speaker 19: them specifically, you know, they're normally just one certain, like, position.
- 42:33Speaker 8: We'll wrap things up with Travis.
- 42:36Speaker 4: Marco, on defense, y'all were able to rotate a lot
- 42:37Speaker 4: of different guys at a lot of positions. How important
- 42:40Speaker 4: was that depth, especially on a game today where it
- 42:42Speaker 4: was so hot on an early kick?
- 42:44Speaker 19: Yeah, I mean, that's like the beauty of it, I think,
- 42:47Speaker 19: of our defense is, I was saying this earlier, like,
- 42:51Speaker 19: you know, we got not just the first 11, but
- 42:53Speaker 19: we have the next 11, the next 11, the next 11. Like,
- 42:57Speaker 19: it's anybody who ever touches the field, like, it's somebody
- 43:00Speaker 19: who can go out there and make plays.
- 43:01Speaker 12: And make an impact on the game.
- 43:02Speaker 19: And I think that's really important because, like, you know,
- 43:06Speaker 19: Even if you have the best guys in the world
- 43:08Speaker 19: and you just leave them in there to dry and
- 43:11Speaker 19: they're super tired, they're not going to be the best
- 43:13Speaker 19: guys in the world anymore. I think that's what's important.
- 43:15Speaker 19: Always having fresh legs, always having people that are going
- 43:17Speaker 19: to go in, do what they need to do, go
- 43:19Speaker 19: make plays. I think that's huge, and that's kind of
- 43:21Speaker 19: what leads to us having a good defense this year.
- 43:24Speaker 1: That's Marco Jones, one of the two pick sixes on
- 43:28Speaker 1: Saturday in the fourth quarter that blew open a close game.
- 43:36Speaker 1: We'll talk with the writers coming up here in about
- 43:38Speaker 1: 20 minutes. Get their take on what happened on Saturday
- 43:42Speaker 1: and look forward to the Kentucky game right now.
- 43:46Speaker 3: It's an Astros report. They got swept.

- 45:03Speaker 21: The Houston Astros got blown out in their game against
- 45:06Speaker 21: the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday.
- 45:08Speaker 3: Final score, 14-4.
- 45:10Speaker 21: Starting pitcher Hayden Wesneski had a rough day getting pulled
- 45:14Speaker 21: after giving up three runs on six hits in just
- 45:17Speaker 21: three innings. The Astros gave up 11 unanswered runs in
- 45:20Speaker 21: the first five innings. Houston didn't score till the sixth,
- 45:24Speaker 21: with Isak Paredes hitting the first of two Astros home runs,
- 45:28Speaker 21: but the game was way out of hand by that point.
- 45:31Speaker 4: 0-2 again.
- 45:33Speaker 3: And that is club deep to left field. Racing back
- 45:35Speaker 3: is Simpson at the wall.
- 45:37Speaker 12: Looking up.
- 45:37Speaker 5: See you later.
- 45:39Speaker 21: The Astros will have the day off today, and they'll
- 45:41Speaker 21: be back in action tomorrow night to begin a home
- 45:44Speaker 21: series against the Kansas City Royals. First pitch is set
- 45:47Speaker 21: for 7-10, and coverage will be provided by the Space
- 45:50Speaker 21: City Home Network. With your Houston Astros report, I'm Adam See.

- 46:21Speaker 1: Member FDIC.
- 46:32Speaker 9: The first thing I remember knowing was a lonesome whistle
- 46:37Speaker 9: blowing and a young'un's dream of growing up.
- 46:40Speaker 3: Hey, welcome back.
- 46:41Speaker 1: Thanks for being with us on this Monday. We've got
- 46:44Speaker 1: the writers coming in here in about 15 minutes. What
- 46:47Speaker 1: in the world happened in Stillwater? O-M-G.
- 46:51Speaker 3: 3931 Oklahoma State.
- 47:01Speaker 1: Dan Lanning had a 35-0 record at Oregon against unranked opponents.
- 47:09Speaker 1: Oregon had not lost to any unranked opponent in over
- 47:16Speaker 1: five years. Oklahoma State, they hadn't won a Division I
- 47:26Speaker 1: game in, what, 12 games or something like that?
- 47:32Speaker 3: It was crazy.
- 47:33Speaker 1: They were 24-and-a-half-point underdogs. That's the biggest upset of an
- 47:42Speaker 1: Oregon team since 1978.
- 47:44Speaker 12: Okay?
- 47:44Speaker 3: Drew Mestermaker threw for, well, had 554 total yards with
- 47:51Speaker 3: the offense.
- 48:02Speaker 1: And I just looked today, by the way, BetMGM, 95%
- 48:10Speaker 1: of the money wagered on the straight-up winner was Oregon, right?
- 48:16Speaker 11: Of course.
- 48:18Speaker 3: I mean, what in the world?
- 48:22Speaker 1: And Oklahoma State plays Murray State this weekend.
- 48:28Speaker 3: Would you double-check this?
- 48:29Speaker 1: I could have sworn I saw 57.5 points spread. That
- 48:35Speaker 1: can't be right. That had to be like an over
- 48:38Speaker 1: and under or something. That just can't be right. I mean,
- 48:42Speaker 1: this is a team that lost to Tulsa a week ago.
- 48:48Speaker 1: This is why you can't, you know. It's college football, man. Okay.
- 48:53Speaker 3: Enough of that. We're going to hear a little from
- 48:56Speaker 3: Eric Morris, the Oklahoma State coach.
- 49:00Speaker 2: How much does this win mean to you, especially in
- 49:03Speaker 2: year one at Oklahoma State?
- 49:05Speaker 8: Yeah, not as much to me. I'll come back and
- 49:09Speaker 8: reflect on it.
- 49:12Speaker 14: I'm so happy that our players, we challenged them this
- 49:15Speaker 14: week in a really tough way and tough manner.
- 49:18Speaker 8: And we had some meetings that weren't very pleasant in here.
- 49:21Speaker 14: And they had to listen to how bad they were
- 49:23Speaker 14: after hearing how good they were for such a long time.
- 49:25Speaker 14: And to see them practice this last week, the intensity,
- 49:30Speaker 14: the focus, the effort that they had, to be rewarded
- 49:35Speaker 14: for it. Just because, in my opinion, that game, I mean,
- 49:39Speaker 14: Without the two tip passes that ended up being interceptions
- 49:42Speaker 14: in that first half, we might have won the game
- 49:45Speaker 14: by 25-plus points. I just thought that physically we played
- 49:49Speaker 14: so much faster and we were more aggressive. The guys
- 49:53Speaker 14: went out there and competed their tails off. For them
- 49:56Speaker 14: to have that moment, for me as a coach, that's
- 49:59Speaker 14: what's rewarding for me.
- 50:01Speaker 8: I'll look back on this at some point later in life.
- 50:04Speaker 14: We're going to have to be really good as coaches
- 50:06Speaker 14: this week.
- 50:07Speaker 8: Because everybody's going to tell them how good they are
- 50:09Speaker 8: now all of a sudden. And, you know, all this
- 50:11Speaker 8: stuff switches and, you know, we're in Stillwater. They're going
- 50:13Speaker 8: to have a great night tonight, which they should, right?
- 50:17Speaker 8: But then, you know, the narrative changes. And this is
- 50:20Speaker 8: why everybody loves college football, right?
- 50:22Speaker 10: I mean, you know, but for me, like for this
- 50:26Speaker 10: place that has been down for a while and struggled and,
- 50:30Speaker 10: you know, You know, I know, you know, and I feel.
- 50:33Speaker 8: Like I take great pride in this place.
- 50:35Speaker 14: We have great friends here in Stillwater, people that we love,
- 50:37Speaker 14: our kids love.
- 50:39Speaker 8: And, you know, you get the sense.
- 50:41Speaker 14: And then all of a sudden we lose one game and, like, oh,
- 50:43Speaker 14: here we go again. But I've done this before. Like,
- 50:46Speaker 14: I'm built for this. Just I've been in these situations,
- 50:49Speaker 14: you know.
- 50:49Speaker 8: And actually this is better.
- 50:50Speaker 14: My first two games at the Carnot Ward I lost.
- 50:52Speaker 14: My first two games at North Texas I lost. So
- 50:56Speaker 14: one and one is actually an improvement for me.
- 50:57Speaker 5: Go ahead.
- 51:00Speaker 8: Did you see this coming in practice this week?
- 51:04Speaker 14: The guys were phenomenal. Now, I didn't know what to expect. Obviously,
- 51:07Speaker 14: this is a really good team. I knew we were
- 51:08Speaker 14: really locked in Thursday and Friday. We were super physical
- 51:12Speaker 14: with the guys. We got after it Tuesday and Wednesday
- 51:15Speaker 14: just because we thought we weren't near good enough in
- 51:19Speaker 14: the trenches last game. And so I thought they responded
- 51:22Speaker 14: on the tough days. And then Thursday and Friday, our
- 51:27Speaker 14: kids just had a different look and intensity and They.
- 51:30Speaker 8: Were locked in in so many different ways.
- 51:32Speaker 14: And so I would say yes, but then obviously it
- 51:37Speaker 14: was to be seen yet if we can go out
- 51:38Speaker 14: and we can perform and actually do it in front
- 51:41Speaker 14: of 50, 60,000 people out there against a top ten opponent.
- 51:44Speaker 14: And hats off to our guys for actually going to
- 51:47Speaker 14: execute it. The president has told a story this summer
- 51:50Speaker 14: where he said he wanted to talk to.
- 51:51Speaker 8: Your team and tell you guys that. The goalposts were
- 51:54Speaker 8: ready to be torn down.
- 51:56Speaker 14: When you think about the support that you guys have
- 51:58Speaker 14: and have today, your debut here, what can you say
- 52:00Speaker 14: about that? Yeah, I mean, I think for me, you know,
- 52:04Speaker 14: both President Entz and Chad were amazing last week.
- 52:08Speaker 8: And, you know, they're your two bosses, obviously.
- 52:11Speaker 14: And for them to call you and have the support and, hey, like,
- 52:16Speaker 14: you know, obviously not the way we want it, but
- 52:19Speaker 14: there's a reason you're here and we believe in you.
- 52:21Speaker 8: And just to have that support, I think, It means
- 52:24Speaker 8: a ton to me, right?
- 52:24Speaker 14: And it allows me to believe in myself and what
- 52:26Speaker 14: I do and the way we.
- 52:28Speaker 8: Prepare these kids. And so did they get the goalposts? Yeah,
- 52:32Speaker 8: it seems like they did. I saw a lot. Yeah,
- 52:36Speaker 8: so that was crazy.
- 52:37Speaker 14: I was surrounded by police officers after I shook hands
- 52:41Speaker 14: with Coach Lanning, and they started rushing me off the
- 52:44Speaker 14: field for an ESPN interview.
- 52:46Speaker 8: And, boy, they were taking people out left and right.
- 52:48Speaker 8: Hats off to those guys.
- 52:49Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 52:50Speaker 14: Some of the hardest hits I saw of the day
- 52:52Speaker 14: were our loyal officers taking people out, getting me to
- 52:56Speaker 14: the tunnel to do an interview. So I didn't get
- 52:59Speaker 14: a witness, you know, the actual on the field. You know,
- 53:01Speaker 14: I saw it as chaos around me. But happy for
- 53:04Speaker 14: our fans, right?
- 53:05Speaker 8: I mean, a long time coming, and we'll find some
- 53:09Speaker 8: new field goals. We have a great ag department here.
- 53:11Speaker 8: They can probably weld them right now. Drew ran for
- 53:13Speaker 8: 109 yards today.
- 53:18Speaker 4: How much confidence did he gain over this week in
- 53:20Speaker 4: his ability to run the ball?
- 53:22Speaker 8: Yeah, Drew, he's a dog, man. I got no other
- 53:25Speaker 8: way to say it. He was so good. He's put
- 53:29Speaker 8: in the same category as everyone else.
- 53:31Speaker 14: Our first clips in here of that ball from last
- 53:34Speaker 14: week was Drew Messamaker, who's all summer long put on
- 53:37Speaker 14: a pedestal, which rightfully so.
- 53:39Speaker 8: He's performed at a level to be really good.
- 53:42Speaker 14: But guys, he made some throws today that were just eye-opening.
- 53:46Speaker 8: I mean, there's a throw on the flea flicker that
- 53:48Speaker 8: he threw.
- 53:49Speaker 14: To Wyatt Young across the field that not many people
- 53:51Speaker 14: in this world can make. And then we thought, just
- 53:55Speaker 14: with their game plan going into it, we thought we
- 53:58Speaker 14: could run the quarterback a little bit just with what
- 54:00Speaker 14: we do.
- 54:01Speaker 8: And they came out in a little bit different defense.
- 54:03Speaker 8: They went back kind of last year in a three.
- 54:05Speaker 8: They ran a lot of three high situations last year.
- 54:07Speaker 14: And so we figured with our offense, that would be
- 54:09Speaker 14: something they'd get to at times. came out in the
- 54:12Speaker 14: first game and Drew did a great job reading it
- 54:15Speaker 14: and something we liked and happened. And I think, you know,
- 54:19Speaker 14: it gave us a great moment on that same time.
- 54:21Speaker 14: You know, we got three points.
- 54:22Speaker 8: Out of it last week.
- 54:23Speaker 14: Like we, we got, there's one thing we got to
- 54:26Speaker 14: get better on as the season goes.
- 54:28Speaker 8: Like we got to get better inside the five yard line.
- 54:30Speaker 8: And then I've, we've had fourth and inches more times.
- 54:34Speaker 14: In two games here than I've had maybe in my
- 54:36Speaker 14: whole entire 10 years as a head coach.
- 54:38Speaker 8: Like I get so stressed out now. It was like,
- 54:41Speaker 8: I mean, someone needs to do a stat on that
- 54:43Speaker 8: for next week when we have the press conference.
- 54:45Speaker 14: How many fourths and ones with Pat in two games?
- 54:49Speaker 5: When you had the fourth and ones, the shorts, you
- 54:52Speaker 5: said you'd run the quarterback a little more.
- 54:54Speaker 8: What else did you see on Phil that this is
- 54:56Speaker 8: something we're going to take advantage of against Oregon? Yeah,
- 54:58Speaker 8: we just slowed it down.
- 54:59Speaker 14: Like, I thought going back and really researching, like, and
- 55:03Speaker 14: every team's different.
- 55:04Speaker 8: Like, our team last year Um, we're a little bit
- 55:07Speaker 8: older up front.
- 55:07Speaker 14: I have a bunch of guys that play in like
- 55:09Speaker 14: our tempo stuff was, was really good for us last
- 55:11Speaker 14: year on third and short. And it was something, um,
- 55:14Speaker 14: for me, I just had to go back and look
- 55:15Speaker 14: as a play caller and say, Hey, like, let's get
- 55:18Speaker 14: some good downhill runs for, for those situations today. And
- 55:22Speaker 14: then obviously in some key situations, have a little bit
- 55:24Speaker 14: of more misdirection just because these guys were so good.
- 55:27Speaker 12: Right.
- 55:27Speaker 8: And up front, like those, those ends are pretty now. Um,
- 55:31Speaker 8: and so, and so I just like, like that's, For them.
- 55:35Speaker 14: To travel all the way here and deal with the
- 55:37Speaker 14: heat and sit in the locker room, like, and that's what, like,
- 55:40Speaker 14: it was hot.
- 55:40Speaker 8: Out there, right? And I think, you know, we didn't
- 55:42Speaker 8: practice inside at all last week. Like, I mean, we
- 55:45Speaker 8: went outside, and that was part of the challenge to
- 55:48Speaker 8: our guys is, you know, we got to go out
- 55:50Speaker 8: there and practice in the conditions that we're going to
- 55:52Speaker 8: play in.
- 55:52Speaker 1: All right, that's Eric Morris at Oklahoma State. Huge, huge
- 55:58Speaker 1: upset on Saturday against the team that I picked to
- 56:01Speaker 1: win the national championship. Against the quarterback that I picked
- 56:05Speaker 1: to win the Heisman Trophy. That's how knowledgeable I am
- 56:10Speaker 1: of college football. I probably shouldn't say that, but when
- 56:17Speaker 1: I go and tell you to go to a business,
- 56:20Speaker 1: you're going, well, he can't pick Oregon and, you know.
- 56:24Speaker 1: But I do know that Oliver Brothers has been around
- 56:26Speaker 1: our community for well over 50 years. I do know
- 56:30Speaker 1: Larry Haygood. I do know the staff over there. I
- 56:34Speaker 1: do know how conscientious they are when they're looking at
- 56:38Speaker 1: your car or truck. Free diagnostic exams, manual and automatic
- 56:46Speaker 1: transmission service, rebuilt services with a warranty. They are right
- 56:53Speaker 1: in the heart. A 2107 Cabot, a block off of Texas.
- 56:58Speaker 1: They have been there all these years taking care of people.
- 57:03Speaker 1: I say this all the time. I don't go to
- 57:06Speaker 1: a seafood restaurant and order steak. I order seafood. Don't
- 57:10Speaker 1: take your car to get your transmission fixed to anybody
- 57:14Speaker 1: but that deals with this every single day. See why
- 57:18Speaker 1: they say no one knows transmissions like we do at
- 57:22Speaker 1: Oliver Brothers.
