- 0:01Speaker 1: Live from the sky New Center. This is the Kenny Report.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Thanks for joining the Kenny Report.
- 0:09Speaker 2: I'm here at one of my favorite places in the world, Bondi,
- 0:13Speaker 2: rocked into an eerie silence by an unthinkable massacre. I'll
- 0:18Speaker 2: have the whole program for you from here tonight, covering
- 0:21Speaker 2: all the angles and the anger, with Denika de Giorgio,
- 0:24Speaker 2: Josh Friedenberg, Michaulia Cash, gemton Yuni, Paul Rubinstein and Moore.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Before I go any further, though, let me show you
- 0:32Speaker 2: the details we know about the victims. We don't know
- 0:35Speaker 2: all the people who have been killed, all the fifteen
- 0:37Speaker 2: who have been killed yet, they have not all been named.
- 0:39Speaker 2: We know the youngest was Matilda, aged ten, Alexander Kletman,
- 0:45Speaker 2: Daniel Epkiman, Peter Mayer, Rabbi Elie Schlangen, Reuven Morrison, Rabbi
- 0:54Speaker 2: Yakov Leveton, and Timour Whitson. Fifteen people all up. We
- 1:00Speaker 2: don't have all their names yet, and there are forty
- 1:02Speaker 2: two in hospital Bondai Beach on a summer Sunday, Fifteen
- 1:08Speaker 2: people killed in an Islamist terrorist atrocity. The youngest victim
- 1:12Speaker 2: a ten year old girl named Matilda. You could hardly
- 1:16Speaker 2: get a more Australian setting for such an UnAustralian act.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Bon Dai has become our ground zero in the fight
- 1:23Speaker 2: against anti Semitism and Islamist extremism. If Ballei was our
- 1:28Speaker 2: nine to eleven, then yesterday's barbarity was our October seventh,
- 1:33Speaker 2: today is the eleventh anniversary of the Lint Cafe siege.
- 1:38Speaker 2: But time and again our politicians, especially Anthony Albernesi and
- 1:42Speaker 2: this government ignore the warnings, They deny the obvious, and
- 1:46Speaker 2: they avert their eyes, so we end up with this
- 1:50Speaker 2: to fill the hanuka. It was what we all feared most,
- 2:16Speaker 2: a mass casualty attack. We'd seen cars graffited, shops vandalized,
- 2:22Speaker 2: synagogues burned.
- 2:24Speaker 1: And our leaders did far too little.
- 2:27Speaker 2: We saw almost daily protests caused to eliminate Israel from
- 2:31Speaker 2: the river to the sea and chance for death to
- 2:35Speaker 2: the IDF and even right here on Bondai Beach just
- 2:39Speaker 2: three months ago, chanced to globalize the Interfada.
- 2:57Speaker 3: It's just not normal.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Yet still we were told the government had it under control.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Yet we now have seen what globalizing the Interfada means.
- 3:10Speaker 2: When we heard and saw celebrations after October the seventh.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Nothing happened when they chanted at the opera house. We
- 3:18Speaker 2: were told, don't worry. They didn't say gas the Jews.
- 3:21Speaker 2: They said where's the Jews? As if that's any better,
- 3:25Speaker 2: Where are the Jews? Well they're here at Bondi threatened
- 3:30Speaker 2: and intimidated for two years, abandoned for two years, and
- 3:35Speaker 2: now fifteen people, innocent, people dead.
- 3:40Speaker 4: The Jewish community are hurting today. Today all Australians wrap
- 3:45Speaker 4: our arms around them and say we stand with you.
- 3:49Speaker 4: We will do whatever is necessary to stamp out anti Semitism.
- 3:53Speaker 4: It is a scourge and we will eradicate it together.
- 3:58Speaker 1: But he hasn't done all he could.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Alberizi has not called out Islamist extremism. He hasn't implemented
- 4:05Speaker 2: the recommendations from his Special Envoy against anti Semitism. Even worse,
- 4:11Speaker 2: when he appointed her, he also appointed an envoy for Islamophobia.
- 4:15Speaker 1: When has that been a problem in Australia.
- 4:18Speaker 2: As I said last Thursday in what I thought would
- 4:20Speaker 2: be my last editorial of the year, this false equivalence
- 4:24Speaker 2: is not only weak, it's dangerous. We've been calling out
- 4:28Speaker 2: Albanesi's weakness on this since October ninth, twenty twenty three,
- 4:34Speaker 2: Anthony Albanesi and Penny Wong discussed me they have stood
- 4:40Speaker 2: by while the Australian Jewish community has been terrorized, and
- 4:44Speaker 2: their constant demonization of Israel has only fueled this anti
- 4:48Speaker 2: semitism in our country. It is delusional, but it's all
- 4:52Speaker 2: so dangerous and it shows just how quickly a national
- 4:57Speaker 2: government can make this country less liable, less committed to
- 5:02Speaker 2: his traditional values, less supportive of democracy and sovereign rights,
- 5:07Speaker 2: and crucially less secure. It's a sickening day for Australia
- 5:12Speaker 2: and confirmation that the Albanese labor government is changing this
- 5:16Speaker 2: country quite dramatically, quite quickly, and all for the worse.
- 5:22Speaker 2: The political left, our own government, most of the media,
- 5:26Speaker 2: and the protesters have rewarded terrorism. We just to have
- 5:31Speaker 2: to hope now that it doesn't encourage more.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Yet.
- 5:39Speaker 2: We now know that after a Muslim cleric celebrated the
- 5:43Speaker 2: slaughter of Jews in Israel back in October twenty twenty three,
- 5:47Speaker 2: Albanesi spoke the very next day at the lakember Mosque
- 5:51Speaker 2: and did not even mention the atrocities of just days earlier,
- 5:56Speaker 2: and that same cleric was among other hardline protesters in
- 5:59Speaker 2: the August march across the Harbor Bridge. Instead of calling
- 6:03Speaker 2: out the extremists, Albanese caved into them. He rewarded terrorists
- 6:08Speaker 2: and the extremists and of course the terrorists of Humas
- 6:12Speaker 2: by recognizing the non existent state of Palestine.
- 6:15Speaker 1: What Anthony Albanesi has.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Done today shames our nation and it imperils us. And
- 6:24Speaker 2: now we get more reassurance in place of action from
- 6:28Speaker 2: the Prime Minister.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Australia will never submit to division, violence or hatred and
- 6:34Speaker 4: we will come through this together.
- 6:39Speaker 1: But you have submitted to it, Prime Minister.
- 6:41Speaker 2: You have given the anti Israel crewe exactly what they wanted.
- 6:45Speaker 2: You've attacked the victims of terrorism rather than those who
- 6:48Speaker 2: inspire it. Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin that Yahoo has got
- 6:54Speaker 2: your measure.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Your government did nothing to start the spread of anti
- 6:59Speaker 5: Semitism in US failure. You did nothing to curb the
- 7:03Speaker 5: cancer cells that were growing inside your country. You took
- 7:08Speaker 5: no action, You let the disease spread and the result
- 7:12Speaker 5: is the aurific attacks on Jews we saw today.
- 7:16Speaker 2: So what should Albanese do well, He's starting from a
- 7:20Speaker 2: terrible place now.
- 7:21Speaker 1: This mass killing is.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Exactly what we all feared exactly why we called for
- 7:26Speaker 2: a tougher stand against Islamist extremism and against anti Semitism
- 7:31Speaker 2: all along. Albanese should do now what he failed to do.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Then he should go to Muslim communities and talk about
- 7:37Speaker 2: how they suffer too from extremists, but make them join
- 7:40Speaker 2: in a public battle to root out this extremism. The
- 7:44Speaker 2: Iman's Council's first statement after this Bondai massacre didn't even
- 7:49Speaker 2: mention Jews or the Jewish community. Ponder that they've since
- 7:54Speaker 2: put out a new statement that does mention them. Albanese
- 7:58Speaker 2: needs to do what is anti Semitism Envoy has asked,
- 8:01Speaker 2: including provide stronger policing and security, but he needs primarily
- 8:06Speaker 2: to call out the actual problem, the ideology. Terrorists will
- 8:11Speaker 2: use knives, guns, cars, planes, fire whatever they can. You
- 8:15Speaker 2: can't battle Islamist extremism without taking on the hatred. Police
- 8:21Speaker 2: today refused to even discuss the obvious motivations for this
- 8:25Speaker 2: evil thession.
- 8:26Speaker 6: There are reports of black Isis blood was great over
- 8:30Speaker 6: the gun's car.
- 8:31Speaker 7: A police aware of this is a blood being recovered.
- 8:34Speaker 8: That's all part of the investigation. As I'd have said before,
- 8:37Speaker 8: I'd rather not comment on that ride at the moment. Obviously,
- 8:39Speaker 8: we will look at the motives behind this attack, and
- 8:41Speaker 8: I think that's really important as part of the investigation.
- 8:44Speaker 8: Our investigation will be thorough and we will be happy
- 8:47Speaker 8: to provide further information.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yeah, but one of the terrorists was on an ASO
- 8:53Speaker 2: watch list, yet he still did this, still got access
- 8:57Speaker 2: to guns, which of course was a mistake to be sure,
- 9:01Speaker 2: but a welcome distraction really for the Prime Minister.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Government is prepared to take whatever action is necessary. Included
- 9:10Speaker 4: in that is the need for tougher gun laws.
- 9:15Speaker 2: The gun debate is a distraction because even without guns,
- 9:19Speaker 2: extremist rick havoc. We've seen that time and time again.
- 9:23Speaker 2: When you focus on guns, you miss the main point,
- 9:26Speaker 2: the ideology, the motivation. The Islamist extremist ideology is hard
- 9:31Speaker 2: for those of us who love life to understand. But
- 9:35Speaker 2: it's about chaos. It's about scaring Jews away away from everywhere,
- 9:40Speaker 2: and the Christians then we're all fair game in pursuit
- 9:44Speaker 2: of a global Islamist caliphate.
- 9:47Speaker 1: This chaos, this trauma.
- 9:49Speaker 2: The weakness of our governments, well that's exactly what they
- 9:52Speaker 2: want to see.
- 9:53Speaker 1: And right now today Australia is.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Weaker than it was last week, and the Islamists are
- 10:00Speaker 2: stronger than inspired. Good people are scared, Good innocent people
- 10:06Speaker 2: are dead.
- 10:08Speaker 1: You can't reason with this, Prime Minister.
- 10:11Speaker 2: I implore you for the two hundredth time, take it on.
- 10:17Speaker 1: And what can we do? You and I? We need
- 10:20Speaker 1: to accept that this is our problem.
- 10:23Speaker 2: This is not just a horrible dilemma for the Jewish
- 10:25Speaker 2: community alone. It's an assault on our country, our values
- 10:30Speaker 2: and our future. Speak up, condemn it. Don't cower in
- 10:35Speaker 2: the face of the extremists. We outnumber them. They're just
- 10:39Speaker 2: a lot noisier. If Australia stands for anything, it stands against.
- 10:45Speaker 1: This what we've seen here.
- 10:47Speaker 2: We can't accept weak leadership anymore. Let me cross now
- 10:57Speaker 2: to the former deputy leader of the Federal Liberal part
- 11:00Speaker 2: reformer Treasurer Josh Frodenberg, who's been outspoken against anti Semitism
- 11:05Speaker 2: over the past few years.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us, Josh.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Tell us how this has just what we've seen unfolded
- 11:10Speaker 2: here't folding in BONDI a place you know?
- 11:13Speaker 1: Well, this is the sum of all our fears, isn't it.
- 11:18Speaker 9: Well, this is our worst nightmare, and as you rightly
- 11:21Speaker 9: pointed out in your introduction, many of us have been
- 11:24Speaker 9: warning that this day will come if the government did
- 11:28Speaker 9: not take sufficients and strong action to safeguarded citizens. But
- 11:35Speaker 9: now we're mourning the last of sixteen lives, including ten
- 11:39Speaker 9: year old Matilda, Holocaust survivors rabbis. It's unthinkable that in
- 11:45Speaker 9: many ways it was predictable because it was not an
- 11:48Speaker 9: isolated or spontaneous response to the event of October the seventh.
- 11:55Speaker 9: What we have seen since two and a half years
- 11:57Speaker 9: ago is just act of violence and harassment and intimidation
- 12:04Speaker 9: and hatred after act, and it's all culminated in this
- 12:09Speaker 9: horrific massacre on our national icon, Bondi Beach.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Josh Rodenberg, let me pick you up there and correct you.
- 12:19Speaker 2: We do not mourn sixteen people. We mourn fifteen people.
- 12:22Speaker 2: We do not mourn the terrorist in this case. We're right,
- 12:24Speaker 2: sixteen deaths, fifteen innocent people killed. Now, Josh, you have
- 12:28Speaker 2: warned about this for two years. You've been so prominent
- 12:32Speaker 2: on this. You were instrumental in the sky News documentary
- 12:35Speaker 2: about anti Semitism and the anti Semitism Summit the sky
- 12:38Speaker 2: News hosted just up the road here.
- 12:41Speaker 1: What is it most. What are the top few things.
- 12:43Speaker 2: That Anthony Arberizi has failed to do and what he
- 12:46Speaker 2: could do tomorrow.
- 12:50Speaker 9: Well, as you know, in that documentary, I interviewed John
- 12:52Speaker 9: Howard Chris and I asked John Howard what would he
- 12:55Speaker 9: have done if he was Prime Minister at the time
- 12:58Speaker 9: of October the seventh. He said his first call would
- 13:01Speaker 9: be to the opposition leader Kim Beasley, and he would
- 13:04Speaker 9: ask Kim Beasley to stand with him in the Prime
- 13:06Speaker 9: minister or a courtyard and to send a message to
- 13:09Speaker 9: every Australian that these were the red lines that were
- 13:12Speaker 9: not to be crossed. But that has not been done
- 13:14Speaker 9: by a Prime minister. So when there's marches over the
- 13:19Speaker 9: bridge the Sydney Harmbor Bridge, people are waiving Hamas and
- 13:22Speaker 9: Hesbalara and Isis flags and enchanting death to the idf
- 13:26Speaker 9: or without sanction. And when we see on the steps
- 13:29Speaker 9: of the Opera House and the hours after the Hamas
- 13:33Speaker 9: attack people celebrating it, and as you say, Muslim and
- 13:38Speaker 9: religious leaders celebrating the attack, there has not been sufficient sanction.
- 13:43Speaker 9: And then we see daily weekly protests across our cities,
- 13:47Speaker 9: all of which are acting as incubators of hate, and
- 13:50Speaker 9: then on campuses, Jewish students and Jewish staff are harassed
- 13:55Speaker 9: and intimidated. Jewish artists like Deborah Conway canceled and docked.
- 14:01Speaker 9: Jewish businesses are boycotted day after day. There's unacceptable conduct
- 14:08Speaker 9: in our country, yet our government seems to be tolerating
- 14:13Speaker 9: the intolerable. And that is what has occurred over the
- 14:16Speaker 9: last two and a half years, and that is what
- 14:19Speaker 9: has culminated in the massacre of Bonda.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Just before I let you go, Josh, I want to
- 14:25Speaker 1: show you what we heard.
- 14:27Speaker 2: What we've heard some comments from Jewish leader David Ossip.
- 14:30Speaker 10: Have look two years ago on the fore court of
- 14:34Speaker 10: the opera house, Anti Seamites chanted f the Jews and
- 14:38Speaker 10: where are the Jews? Sadly, last night they found the Jews.
- 14:42Speaker 10: For two years, people have paraded in our streets and
- 14:46Speaker 10: universities calling for the interfada to be globalized, a catchphrase
- 14:52Speaker 10: which means kill Jews wherever you find them. Last night,
- 14:57Speaker 10: the Interfarata was globalized.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Josh Friedenberg, will you be seeking a meeting with Anthony
- 15:03Speaker 2: Albinisi and let him know what he needs to do.
- 15:08Speaker 9: I'll leave that to the Jewish leadership of our community.
- 15:12Speaker 9: Which no doubt is engaging as we speak with our
- 15:15Speaker 9: intelligence and security agencies. But the point that must be
- 15:19Speaker 9: made is that everything has to be on the table
- 15:23Speaker 9: and everything has to change from here. Nothing can be
- 15:27Speaker 9: the same. And you're right, gun reform is important, but
- 15:32Speaker 9: it's by no means the only response. The Prime Minister,
- 15:37Speaker 9: the Human Rights Commission, our leaders at universities, our religious
- 15:42Speaker 9: leaders need to take on the hatred, the vitriol that
- 15:48Speaker 9: is just commonplace now and normalized in our society because
- 15:53Speaker 9: what we've seen over the last two and a half
- 15:56Speaker 9: years is a lack of action has only in boldened
- 16:00Speaker 9: those who hate and those who harm. And enough is enough.
- 16:05Speaker 9: It's time the Prime Minister stood up. He led, He
- 16:10Speaker 9: took personal responsibility, and there was accountability for him, for
- 16:15Speaker 9: his Home Affairs ministers, and for everyone else who has
- 16:19Speaker 9: questions to answer after this horrible, horrible attack at our
- 16:24Speaker 9: iconic Bondi Beach.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Yep spot on. Josh Ridenburg, thanks so much for joining
- 16:30Speaker 2: us here. This is a terrible massacre that's occurred on
- 16:33Speaker 2: Anthony Albanezi's watched despite two years of warnings. Now when
- 16:37Speaker 2: you saw the news breaking here on Sky News last night,
- 16:40Speaker 2: Danika de Georgio, Sky News' host was in the chair
- 16:43Speaker 2: in the studio bringing you all the horrible events unfolding here.
- 16:46Speaker 1: She joins me.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Now, after spending the day speaking to people around here, Danika,
- 16:50Speaker 2: it is eerie. It is a somber tell me about
- 16:54Speaker 2: what you've found, what you've heard here today.
- 16:56Speaker 11: It's almost hard cris to put into words the mood
- 16:58Speaker 11: here tonight. It is an eerie feeling. And anybody who
- 17:01Speaker 11: knows Bondi knows this is a joyous area. It's full
- 17:04Speaker 11: of love, life and laughter. And today we've seen a
- 17:07Speaker 11: steady stream of people come in, pay their respects, lay flowers,
- 17:11Speaker 11: many in tears. It was about twenty minutes ago I
- 17:13Speaker 11: saw a woman in a Quantus uniform come down bawling
- 17:16Speaker 11: her eyes out. It's touched everyone because this is not
- 17:20Speaker 11: just an assault on Jews. This is an assault on
- 17:22Speaker 11: Australians and all of our values. And I caught up
- 17:25Speaker 11: with members of the Jewish community today. Many were at
- 17:27Speaker 11: the Hanaker event last night here on Bondi Beach, and
- 17:30Speaker 11: they speak for themselves. Have a look at this.
- 17:38Speaker 12: While we were down on the ground, we were just praying.
- 17:42Speaker 3: There was mothers crying, people dead, on the streets.
- 17:46Speaker 13: Penny Wong, wake up, It's time to wake up.
- 17:50Speaker 1: This is on you.
- 17:51Speaker 13: The blood is on your hands, and wake up.
- 17:55Speaker 14: Australia.
- 18:02Speaker 12: We started hearing some shots and initially I thought it
- 18:05Speaker 12: was firecrackers. We were on the ground closest to the
- 18:09Speaker 12: point of where the kid's ground playground is fairly close
- 18:14Speaker 12: to where the entrance to this area was, and it
- 18:16Speaker 12: was a gated to the area, so we were in
- 18:18Speaker 12: fact trapped in that space. You couldn't run because it
- 18:21Speaker 12: was an open space. They were there waiting to shoot,
- 18:24Speaker 12: and they were shooting to kill.
- 18:26Speaker 1: I felt like I was at nova. That's how it felt.
- 18:29Speaker 11: I was behind at tent with about twelve people.
- 18:33Speaker 1: We were all cowering together.
- 18:34Speaker 11: I was half on top of this lady, this poor
- 18:37Speaker 11: woman who couldn't find her daughter, her little girl.
- 18:43Speaker 15: I'm an empt equivalent, so medical first responder, and.
- 18:47Speaker 11: Tell us what you saw when you got here last night.
- 18:51Speaker 1: It was absolutely obscene.
- 18:52Speaker 15: It was horrific. People in today's day get to see
- 18:55Speaker 15: it online. But yeah, you know, people lying down, kids, screaming,
- 19:00Speaker 15: parents frantically looking for kids. At best, at worst, you've
- 19:03Speaker 15: got gunshot wounds, people bleeding up from any part of
- 19:05Speaker 15: their body.
- 19:08Speaker 11: What's going through your minds at that time?
- 19:12Speaker 1: What were you thinking?
- 19:13Speaker 12: I'm going this is this excuse my language, and this
- 19:16Speaker 12: is being real. This is happening, and it's happening right now.
- 19:18Speaker 12: This could be our last moment. I was praying.
- 19:24Speaker 3: There was mothers crying, people dead on the streets, just sad.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Man.
- 19:29Speaker 3: It was just I saw a dead person. I saw
- 19:31Speaker 3: people getting like haled into the ambulances. It was just
- 19:33Speaker 3: the most horrific thing I've.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Ever seen as a mother.
- 19:36Speaker 11: What was going through your head when you tracked your
- 19:39Speaker 11: phone and found out that your son was here at
- 19:42Speaker 11: the scene of such a tragedy.
- 19:45Speaker 7: That was absolutely terrified. I thought we had lost him.
- 19:48Speaker 7: He's totally traumatized, and you know, he said someone had
- 19:52Speaker 7: their brains blown apart in front of him. Took for
- 19:55Speaker 7: shir to try and help him, and I think for
- 19:58Speaker 7: a fifteen year old, it's just too hard to comprehend.
- 20:03Speaker 11: You're wearing You're Never Again is Now t shirt today?
- 20:06Speaker 16: Why I bought this T shirt after October seven.
- 20:14Speaker 7: And today walking around Bonti, it's exactly like.
- 20:18Speaker 16: What October eighth felt like. It was eerie, it was quieted.
- 20:24Speaker 17: In the Jewish community.
- 20:26Speaker 18: You're thinking, I think we're gonna I'd ask you if
- 20:30Speaker 18: we need to do we need to go?
- 20:31Speaker 16: Where can we go?
- 20:33Speaker 13: There were so many warning signs to this, and it's
- 20:35Speaker 13: almost like we weren't protected. But the red flags were
- 20:39Speaker 13: there from October eighth when he allowed this to happen.
- 20:44Speaker 13: Why was this allowed to happen? And then they kept
- 20:46Speaker 13: protesting and you kept allowing it, and you kept allowing it.
- 20:49Speaker 1: A rabbi was shot.
- 20:50Speaker 13: He was meant to do my son's bum mits for
- 20:52Speaker 13: next week.
- 20:54Speaker 16: Why this is what it's taken for Australia and STU fine,
- 21:00Speaker 16: at least that happens to beak up because we have
- 21:03Speaker 16: felt so alone, Like we have felt so alone, you know,
- 21:07Speaker 16: like only we.
- 21:08Speaker 18: Can understand this trauma and the opera house steps, the
- 21:13Speaker 18: by bombings, the vandalism, walking around, seeing stickers everywhere people,
- 21:20Speaker 18: you know, the cars coming from other suburbs with the
- 21:23Speaker 18: flags flying, and you know, and I think Australians have
- 21:26Speaker 18: honestly thought that this was just.
- 21:28Speaker 1: A Jewish problem.
- 21:29Speaker 16: And now I think they've woken up and it's taken.
- 21:32Speaker 18: You know, fifteen of our community members.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Missed out.
- 21:43Speaker 18: But easy, your time is now you either need to
- 21:46Speaker 18: step aside, step down or stand up.
- 21:49Speaker 11: Is Australia safe for Jewish Australians?
- 21:52Speaker 1: Okay, what's happened?
- 21:53Speaker 13: Look at the people around us.
- 21:54Speaker 1: We are not safe.
- 21:56Speaker 13: The Australian government.
- 21:57Speaker 15: Needs to wake up.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Penny Wong, wake up. It's time to wake up. This
- 22:02Speaker 1: is on you.
- 22:03Speaker 13: The blood is on your hands. This is also on
- 22:07Speaker 13: New Albanize you and it's the truth.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Extraordinary interviews, Denika, extraordinary. The emotion here is so high,
- 22:21Speaker 2: but there's a level of comforting here. People are comforting
- 22:24Speaker 2: each other.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Also so much resolve. Yes, to overcome this. There is resolve.
- 22:30Speaker 11: I think there's a lot of frustration in the community
- 22:32Speaker 11: right now. I had people coming to me today from
- 22:35Speaker 11: the Jewish community saying, what do we do next?
- 22:37Speaker 1: Where do we go from here?
- 22:38Speaker 11: Because this is what they have been saying for over
- 22:41Speaker 11: two years now, Chris, and it's culminated in what we
- 22:44Speaker 11: saw last night and you heard it from their interviews.
- 22:47Speaker 11: They're saying, Prime Minister, this is on your hands.
- 22:50Speaker 1: And they've been telling me today. We knew it was coming.
- 22:52Speaker 1: We all knew it was coming. We were telling you exactly.
- 22:54Speaker 11: They knew it was coming. So yes, I do agree
- 22:56Speaker 11: there is a level of resolve here. Everybody is here
- 22:59Speaker 11: to comfort one they put their hands around another. But
- 23:02Speaker 11: there's also a lot of confusion as to where they
- 23:04Speaker 11: go next, because, as one woman told me, we feel
- 23:08Speaker 11: like we're in hiding.
- 23:09Speaker 15: Where do we go from here?
- 23:11Speaker 11: It's just unfathomable and you can't put it into words.
- 23:15Speaker 2: If there's one key message though, it is that this
- 23:18Speaker 2: is our problem. This is not the Jewish community's problem,
- 23:23Speaker 2: the Australians who happen to be Jewish.
- 23:25Speaker 1: This is a massive challenge for all Australians right, it.
- 23:28Speaker 11: Is a massive challenge for all Australians. Now it is
- 23:30Speaker 11: our time, I guess, for all of Australia to wake
- 23:33Speaker 11: up and say this is not just an assault, This
- 23:35Speaker 11: is not just happening to Jewish Australians, because it's now
- 23:37Speaker 11: our values are at risk and they have been at
- 23:40Speaker 11: risk for the last two years. And the sad part
- 23:42Speaker 11: is the saddest part out of all of this. It's
- 23:44Speaker 11: taken a massacre, a massacre of this scale for Australians
- 23:49Speaker 11: to go actually, we do have a problem.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Just extraordinary. Thanks so much to Nika, Thank you so much.
- 23:54Speaker 2: We better take a break after the breaking on the
- 23:56Speaker 2: catch up with a member of the Jewish community here
- 23:58Speaker 2: at Bondai with the Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Michayla Cash.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Don't go away.
- 24:08Speaker 2: I'm Chris Kenny here at the Bondai pavilion where people
- 24:11Speaker 2: have been laying flowers at this makeshift memorium here commemoration
- 24:16Speaker 2: all day. We are expecting the New South Wales Premier
- 24:19Speaker 2: Chris Men's opposition leader Kelly Sloan, Police Commissioner mal Langen,
- 24:23Speaker 2: and the Governor of New South Wales, Missus Beasley, to
- 24:30Speaker 2: arrive here soon and they'll be joining the ceremony here.
- 24:33Speaker 1: So we'll cut to those pictures live when they happen.
- 24:34Speaker 2: But let me bring in a member of the Jewish community,
- 24:37Speaker 2: Marney Perstein, the Money, who we've spoken to you throughout
- 24:41Speaker 2: the last couple of years. It's good to see you
- 24:42Speaker 2: again in the flesh.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Marl Money.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Just want you tell me what it's been like for
- 24:46Speaker 2: your community, seeing your worst fears unfold.
- 24:50Speaker 17: It has been shocking, and yet no one in the
- 24:55Speaker 17: community is actually surprised. We really actually expected that something
- 25:02Speaker 17: like this could happen, and we have been dreading it.
- 25:05Speaker 17: But we've been kicking and screaming For two years.
- 25:08Speaker 2: You've been in the media, You've been on my show
- 25:11Speaker 2: a number of times. You're very active on the social media.
- 25:13Speaker 2: You've been lobbying politicians, bringing it to people's attention, trying
- 25:17Speaker 2: to get other media interested in it.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Why do you feel that nobody's been listening to the warnings.
- 25:23Speaker 17: I don't know why our government hasn't been listening to
- 25:26Speaker 17: the warnings. I don't understand why there hasn't been decisive action.
- 25:32Speaker 17: I don't understand why straight after the events at the
- 25:34Speaker 17: Opera House there wasn't policy reform, there weren't arrest made.
- 25:38Speaker 17: There are just so many things that I don't understand.
- 25:42Speaker 17: I don't understand why the Muslim Brotherhood and his but
- 25:44Speaker 17: Career were designated as terrorist organizations, and why it took
- 25:48Speaker 17: our government so long to designate the Iranian regime. But
- 25:52Speaker 17: what I can't what I find so sad today is
- 25:55Speaker 17: I look at the crowd behind us, is that it's
- 25:57Speaker 17: taken a mass and a shooting for regular Australians to
- 26:03Speaker 17: try and understand the plight of a tiny little community.
- 26:06Speaker 2: This is a point I've made many times when speaking
- 26:08Speaker 2: with the Jewish communities. Is there Jewish community is strong here.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Anybody living in the eastern suburbs of Sydney or in
- 26:17Speaker 2: those southeastern suburbs of Melbourne will be in contact with
- 26:22Speaker 2: the Jewish community. But there are large parts of the
- 26:24Speaker 2: country that don't even know Jewish people that they think
- 26:27Speaker 2: it's someone else's problem. I think I'm not attacking them
- 26:30Speaker 2: for it, but they're not confronted with guards out the
- 26:34Speaker 2: front of schools and childcare centers and synagogue. We need
- 26:37Speaker 2: to convince all of Australia that this is their problem.
- 26:40Speaker 2: We all share this problem because it's an assault.
- 26:43Speaker 1: On all of us.
- 26:44Speaker 17: This is absolutely an Australian problem. Yesterday may have been
- 26:49Speaker 17: a shooting aimed at Jewish people celebrating Kanaka, but there
- 26:52Speaker 17: could have been many people in the crowd on Bondo
- 26:55Speaker 17: Beach who had no affiliation with that event. And it
- 26:58Speaker 17: may start with a Jewish event, but it never ends
- 27:01Speaker 17: in a Jewish capacity. If you look at a lot
- 27:03Speaker 17: of other terrorist attacks, they're much much broader, and I
- 27:07Speaker 17: fear that Australia could and will possibly still see something
- 27:11Speaker 17: like that.
- 27:12Speaker 2: I've spoken to so many Jewish people over the past
- 27:15Speaker 2: two years who have said they feel ostracized in Australia.
- 27:18Speaker 1: They feel scared and under threat in Australia.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Some have even contemplated moving to Israel or the US
- 27:24Speaker 2: because they think they would feel more secure there. How
- 27:26Speaker 2: much more palpable is that after yesterday's massacre?
- 27:31Speaker 17: It is more palpable. And ironically, my youngest son is
- 27:35Speaker 17: in Israel right now on a school trip with one
- 27:37Speaker 17: hundred and twenty students, and they rang me. The whole
- 27:40Speaker 17: group rang me last night trying to understand what was
- 27:43Speaker 17: going on. And I said to them, for two years,
- 27:45Speaker 17: the parent cohort has been meeting to decide whether it
- 27:48Speaker 17: was safe enough to send them to Israel and whether
- 27:51Speaker 17: they would be secure. And ironically, we are now so
- 27:55Speaker 17: grateful that they are there, because if they were here
- 27:57Speaker 17: last night, they would have been on Bondi Beach. So
- 28:00Speaker 17: it is very ironic that we send our children to
- 28:02Speaker 17: a country that's been at war for two years and
- 28:05Speaker 17: that we feel they are actually safer.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Their I spoke to a family today who would arrived
- 28:09Speaker 2: from Israel four holidays with teenage daughters to this they
- 28:13Speaker 2: want to go.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Back to Israel. How do we get our heads.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Around a grown man shooting dead a ten year old girl.
- 28:20Speaker 17: I don't believe that we can get our heads around that.
- 28:23Speaker 17: I spoke to someone at three point thirty this morning
- 28:25Speaker 17: who was at the beach and involved in the attack.
- 28:28Speaker 17: She was there with her family. She flew on top
- 28:32Speaker 17: of her two year old and they witnessed two people
- 28:35Speaker 17: being shot right next to them, and there was blood
- 28:37Speaker 17: all over her. She has moved here from France because
- 28:39Speaker 17: she wanted to escape anti Semitism in Europe.
- 28:42Speaker 1: So I don't.
- 28:43Speaker 17: Believe we can get our heads around losing a child,
- 28:47Speaker 17: or a Holocaust survivor, or any innocent civilians, Jewish.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Or not Jewish. Absolutely, thanks so much for joining us
- 28:53Speaker 1: at a secret time moment.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Thanks for everything, prominent member of the Jewish community here
- 28:58Speaker 2: in Sydney. To go to Perth now and catch up
- 29:01Speaker 2: with the shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Michaelia Cash.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us, Michaelia.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Does the Albertezi government and in particular the Prime Minister,
- 29:10Speaker 2: bear any sense of culpability for the way that anti
- 29:13Speaker 2: Semitism and Islamist extremism has been expressed here in Bondo.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Yes they do.
- 29:20Speaker 6: This has been a complete, total and utter failure of
- 29:23Speaker 6: leadership by our Prime Minister.
- 29:26Speaker 14: The Jewish people.
- 29:27Speaker 6: For over two years now, since October the eighth, when
- 29:30Speaker 6: we saw those horrific scenes on the Sydney Opera House,
- 29:34Speaker 6: have been calling for leadership from our Prime Minister, and
- 29:38Speaker 6: each time he has stood up, Chris and provided us
- 29:41Speaker 6: with nothing more than weasel words. He has chosen appeasement
- 29:46Speaker 6: over consequences. And now we wake up today as Australians
- 29:52Speaker 6: in a changed country. Chris, this is not the Australia
- 29:57Speaker 6: I know and love. Jewish people were slaughtered on Bondi
- 30:02Speaker 6: Beach because anti Semitism has been allowed to take hold
- 30:07Speaker 6: under the Alberanese government. Today mister Albanesi stood up and
- 30:11Speaker 6: said he will do whatever it takes to combat anti Semitism.
- 30:17Speaker 6: Will guess what, Chris. We are going to hold the
- 30:20Speaker 6: Prime Minister.
- 30:21Speaker 1: To his word.
- 30:23Speaker 6: Enough of the excuses, enough of the weasel words. The
- 30:28Speaker 6: first thing the Prime Minister needs to answer, Chris, is
- 30:30Speaker 6: this Gillian Sigal, your hand picked envoy. She did not
- 30:36Speaker 6: provide you six months ago with a list of slogans,
- 30:41Speaker 6: Prime Minister Albanesi. Jillian Sigal provided you and your government
- 30:46Speaker 6: with a to do list.
- 30:48Speaker 1: You have not even had the.
- 30:49Speaker 6: Decency to respond to your own hand picked envoys report.
- 30:56Speaker 6: What are you going to do? And as Susan Lee
- 30:59Speaker 6: has made clear, Chris, if we need to recall the Parliament,
- 31:04Speaker 6: we stand ready to return to Canberra to change the laws.
- 31:09Speaker 6: The laws are clearly not strong enough. The Sigal Report
- 31:14Speaker 6: deserves implementation immediately and we stand ready to do it.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Sure does, Sure does.
- 31:22Speaker 2: You're seeing live pictures now of the commemoration here at
- 31:25Speaker 2: Ondi Pavilion where people have been turning up and laying
- 31:28Speaker 2: wreaths all day. Many people have made speeches or said
- 31:32Speaker 2: silent prayers. Others have spoken to the audiences here, and
- 31:36Speaker 2: we're waiting on the new South Wales Premier Chris Men's
- 31:38Speaker 2: as well. But just to explain those pictures you're seeing there,
- 31:41Speaker 2: there have been all sorts of comments made, speeches made,
- 31:46Speaker 2: and performances if you like, sharing thoughts and emotions with
- 31:52Speaker 2: people here as they've come and gone all day. Michaelia,
- 31:55Speaker 2: I want to let you know that I started the
- 31:57Speaker 2: day this morning in our rat in Western Victoria, and
- 32:01Speaker 2: I saw a couple of women walking their dog at
- 32:03Speaker 2: six o'clock in the morning as I was trying to
- 32:05Speaker 2: get back here, and I asked them how they felt
- 32:07Speaker 2: about Bondi. It's very close to me. This is a
- 32:09Speaker 2: beach I come to every day. And they were gut
- 32:12Speaker 2: wrenched and they teared up and they said the government
- 32:16Speaker 2: needs to look at immigration. Is immigration part of the
- 32:19Speaker 2: discussion here?
- 32:21Speaker 6: I think we have to have a very serious discussion Chris,
- 32:25Speaker 6: now about values based immigration. Yes, this was an attack,
- 32:29Speaker 6: a direct attack on the Jewish community. Members of the
- 32:32Speaker 6: Jewish community were slaughtered last night on Bondi Beach. But
- 32:36Speaker 6: this was also an attack on all of Australia, on
- 32:40Speaker 6: our way of life, on our safety, on our culture,
- 32:43Speaker 6: on the Australia that we love and hold so dear.
- 32:47Speaker 6: So yes, I am very prepared now Chris, to have
- 32:51Speaker 6: an open conversation on the type of Australia that we need.
- 32:55Speaker 6: But again, shame on the Prime Minister because Gillian Segal,
- 32:59Speaker 6: in one of her recommendations, said we needed to look
- 33:03Speaker 6: at settings and in particular the ability to cancel a
- 33:06Speaker 6: visa as quickly and efficiently as possible in light of
- 33:10Speaker 6: anti Semitism. Again, the Prime Minister has done nothing. I mean,
- 33:14Speaker 6: as Josh Bredenberg correctly wrote today, this is the Prime Minister.
- 33:19Speaker 6: On October the eighth, he said to all of Australians,
- 33:22Speaker 6: but in particular the Jewish community. I will not, as
- 33:25Speaker 6: your Prime Minister, allow anti Semitism to get a foothold
- 33:29Speaker 6: in Australia. Well, Prime Minister, you failed Australians by your
- 33:34Speaker 6: inaction and your appeasement and your excuses as opposed to
- 33:39Speaker 6: consequences and enforcement.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Mikayla Cash, thanks so much. Obviously I can hear the
- 33:49Speaker 2: passion in your voice. I do want to add that
- 33:51Speaker 2: I think this immigration debate has to be part of
- 33:54Speaker 2: the discript.
- 33:54Speaker 1: We have to have it.
- 33:55Speaker 2: You be careful and sensible about it, yes, but we
- 33:58Speaker 2: have to have this immigration debate. I do quickly point
- 34:01Speaker 2: out though, that that hero we saw yesterday taking down
- 34:04Speaker 2: one of the government absolutely Syrian refugee. So it's about
- 34:08Speaker 2: value members of Jewish community, of course the immigrants. Thanks
- 34:14Speaker 2: so much for joining me at Michaulea. We need to
- 34:16Speaker 2: take a break.
- 34:17Speaker 1: On the other side. I have more here from Bondai
- 34:19Speaker 1: and will also cross to.
- 34:20Speaker 2: London to get some of the international reception and coverage
- 34:24Speaker 2: of what's unfolded in Australia. Chris Kenny here at the
- 34:35Speaker 2: Bondai Pavilion, Bondo Beach. We are awaiting the arrival of
- 34:40Speaker 2: the Premier of New South Wales, Chris Mins, and the
- 34:42Speaker 2: opposition leader Kelly Sloane. I think you might see them
- 34:44Speaker 2: walking down to the area in just a few moments.
- 34:48Speaker 1: They will be laying breaths here.
- 34:49Speaker 2: The New South Wales Governor Mary Beasley, and of course
- 34:53Speaker 2: the Police Commissioner Mal Langon joining them as well.
- 34:56Speaker 1: But with me here to talk.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Over the top of these pictures is Paul Rubinstein, who
- 35:01Speaker 2: heads up the Australia Israel Jewish Affairs Council. Paul, fifteen
- 35:07Speaker 2: people dead, dozens more in hospital.
- 35:12Speaker 1: And some of them in a critical condition.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Give us your thoughts on what this means to the
- 35:17Speaker 2: community and how you think you'll code well.
- 35:21Speaker 14: Chris, I think, unfortunately, as a lot of people in
- 35:25Speaker 14: the community have been saying that this is a really
- 35:28Speaker 14: big shock, but unfortunately not unexpected. We've been talking about,
- 35:34Speaker 14: you know, the possibility of someone actually getting killed, but
- 35:37Speaker 14: what's actually happened is really everybody's worst nightmare. I think
- 35:41Speaker 14: a lot of people are feeling particularly vulnerable and unsafe,
- 35:46Speaker 14: but you know, we're resilient and we obviously have to
- 35:50Speaker 14: respond to it, and let's just hope that today is
- 35:54Speaker 14: really some sort of a turning point in Australia where
- 35:56Speaker 14: people can understand what's really.
- 35:58Speaker 1: We're seeing just behind it now.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Chrisman's there with the Opposition leader Kelly Sloane, and the
- 36:03Speaker 2: governor and other ministers and the Police Commissioner laying reads.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Of course, it's a good thing that they are doing
- 36:09Speaker 2: this and recognizing the wound here and recognizing those lives lost.
- 36:14Speaker 2: What more do you want from the premiere in particular, Well, I.
- 36:19Speaker 14: Think, you know, I think the sentiment that generally has
- 36:22Speaker 14: been spoken about by many people in the Jewish communities.
- 36:26Speaker 14: We've had a lot of talk, and there's been a
- 36:29Speaker 14: lot of sentiment, and there have been some good things
- 36:30Speaker 14: done both federally and at the state level. But it's
- 36:33Speaker 14: time for action. There's no longer a need to prevaricate
- 36:37Speaker 14: on certain legislation in New South Wales and especially adopting
- 36:40Speaker 14: the recommendations federally of Jillian Siegel. It's actually time to
- 36:44Speaker 14: just get on with it and start doing it because
- 36:48Speaker 14: the community is kind of tied. I think of actually
- 36:51Speaker 14: just hearing.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Talk Synagolics burned shops, vandalized, people threatened, now fifteen innocent
- 36:58Speaker 2: people killed.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Do you feel like.
- 37:01Speaker 2: You've been hounded out of Australia.
- 37:04Speaker 14: We're not being hounded out of Australia. But people are
- 37:07Speaker 14: starting to question, and they have been for a while,
- 37:10Speaker 14: but particularly so now is this a safe place.
- 37:12Speaker 1: For us to live?
- 37:13Speaker 14: I mean, I'm a fourth generation of Australian. My family
- 37:16Speaker 14: came to Australia one hundred and you know, fifty years ago.
- 37:20Speaker 14: Why should I'm an Australian just like everyone else. That
- 37:24Speaker 14: fifteen Australians were killed yesterday. They happened to be Jewish,
- 37:27Speaker 14: but they are Australians. Why should we be thinking about
- 37:30Speaker 14: leaving this country? You know, for an unprecedented.
- 37:36Speaker 1: You know.
- 37:38Speaker 14: Circumstance in Australia where we have community group against community group,
- 37:41Speaker 14: we have fifteen Australians killed by other Australians.
- 37:44Speaker 1: That is a place which a lot of.
- 37:46Speaker 14: People in the Jewish community find to be extremely difficult
- 37:50Speaker 14: to sort of understand. Children. You think, what is the
- 37:53Speaker 14: future for them? It's very unclear and uncertain.
- 37:56Speaker 2: Anti Semitism has many forms. But we are seeing in
- 38:00Speaker 2: the Middle East and here Islamist extremism. Why is it
- 38:03Speaker 2: that our government, especially the Prime Minister, seems unable to
- 38:07Speaker 2: talk about the scooge and confront it.
- 38:09Speaker 14: Well, it's obviously the elephant in the room. I mean,
- 38:13Speaker 14: you know what we have in Australia is we've got
- 38:17Speaker 14: I think what we've actually got it at government level.
- 38:20Speaker 14: It's not that there's an unwillingness or a malevolence, but
- 38:24Speaker 14: there's I think a difficulty in actually defining what the
- 38:28Speaker 14: evil is and speaking openly about what it is and
- 38:31Speaker 14: dealing with it.
- 38:32Speaker 2: If you can't even talk about it, how do you
- 38:34Speaker 2: confront it and defeat it correct?
- 38:37Speaker 14: To actually deal with a problem, you have to You've
- 38:39Speaker 14: got to identify the problem, and I think that's really
- 38:41Speaker 14: the problem.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Now, Paul, thanks for joining us. Thank you Chus.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Paul Rubinstein there from the Australia Israel Jewish Affairs Counsel.
- 38:47Speaker 2: I want to go overseas now and catch up with
- 38:48Speaker 2: Sophie el's Worth, a News corporate correspondent and Sky News contributor.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Sophie.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Great to talk to you in horrible circumstances though of
- 38:58Speaker 2: course this is.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Huge news around the world.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Islam as terrorist attack at world famous Bondai Beach, fifteen
- 39:06Speaker 2: people killed.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Tell us about some of the coverage.
- 39:10Speaker 19: Oh, absolutely, Chris I mean, just getting up here this
- 39:13Speaker 19: morning in the UK, I picked up a stack of
- 39:15Speaker 19: papers and every single one Chris front page. You know
- 39:19Speaker 19: this one here the Sun Bondi killers were father and son.
- 39:23Speaker 19: I mean, there's just every single one blood bath at
- 39:27Speaker 19: Bondi Beach on the Times, the Daily Mail, another one,
- 39:31Speaker 19: you know, Bondai massacre. I mean, we've just got you
- 39:35Speaker 19: know everythingle Haper here, every single radio station, Chris on
- 39:39Speaker 19: the Tube. This morning I could see people scrolling their
- 39:43Speaker 19: phones reading about what's happened in Bondi. Same last night.
- 39:47Speaker 19: Even walking through the streets in London, I've heard people
- 39:50Speaker 19: talking about did you hear what happened at Bondi Beach.
- 39:55Speaker 19: Many English people have said to me, how on earth
- 39:57Speaker 19: did this happen in Brondei Because it's so famous, it's
- 40:01Speaker 19: so well known around the world, particularly the Brits love
- 40:04Speaker 19: Bondai Beach. It's just such a shocking situation, Chris. But
- 40:08Speaker 19: there's been a real outroaring of brief We had a
- 40:11Speaker 19: vigil at Australia House last night in central London where
- 40:15Speaker 19: there were British and Israeli flags and many of the
- 40:18Speaker 19: Jewish community uniting. And we've also heard from the King
- 40:22Speaker 19: and Queen who have sent their deepest condolences to Australia.
- 40:26Speaker 19: So there's no doubt this tragedy is being felt around
- 40:30Speaker 19: the world.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Let's just have a look at some of the international
- 40:35Speaker 1: media coverage of this good evening.
- 40:38Speaker 11: A British born rabbi and a ten year old girl
- 40:41Speaker 11: are among sixteen people killed in a terror attack at
- 40:44Speaker 11: a Jewish celebration on Bondai Beach in Australia. To breaking
- 40:47Speaker 11: news from Australia, police say targeted the Jewish community.
- 40:51Speaker 13: It's been treated as a terrorist attack.
- 40:54Speaker 20: The gunmen opened a fire on Jews at a Hanaker
- 40:57Speaker 20: party along Bondai Beach. Israel's Minister Benjamin nett and Yahu
- 41:01Speaker 20: says anti Semitism is a cancer spreading around the world.
- 41:07Speaker 2: You're right, So, FORI everybody knows Bondi Beach. Everyone from
- 41:09Speaker 2: overseas wants to come here. When I'm here every morning,
- 41:12Speaker 2: I hear every language, every accent, see every color and creed.
- 41:17Speaker 2: That's part of the reason a terrorist would take attack
- 41:21Speaker 2: a place like this because of that global media coverage.
- 41:23Speaker 19: Right, absolutely, Chris, I mean, it's arguably one of the
- 41:29Speaker 19: most famous beaches in the world. It's one of Australia's
- 41:33Speaker 19: biggest tourist spots. I'm familiar with so many people here
- 41:37Speaker 19: in the UK and across Europe, and people are questioning,
- 41:40Speaker 19: now is it safe to go to Bondi Beach because
- 41:43Speaker 19: of what has happened. Chris takes an awful lot for
- 41:48Speaker 19: a situation in Australia to make the front page of
- 41:52Speaker 19: every single British newspaper. Sadly, that is what the case
- 41:56Speaker 19: here is as I wake up on Monday morning here
- 41:59Speaker 19: in London.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Let's just have a look at what President Donald Trump
- 42:04Speaker 2: and UK Prime Minister Sir Keith Starmer have had the
- 42:07Speaker 2: same and.
- 42:08Speaker 21: That was an anti Semitic attack, obviously, and I just
- 42:13Speaker 21: want to pay my respects to everybody, but to Australian,
- 42:17Speaker 21: the Prime Minister, to everybody that we know so well,
- 42:20Speaker 21: we get along with so well, we have a great relationship.
- 42:24Speaker 21: That's a terrible situation going on over there.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Think of that.
- 42:30Speaker 2: President Donald Trump there and of course the UK Prime
- 42:32Speaker 2: Minister Keys Starmer said that the news that the Bondai
- 42:35Speaker 2: Beach attack was an anti Semitic terrorist attack against Jewish
- 42:38Speaker 2: families at a Harnake event is sickening. It sure is sickening, Sophie.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Just tell us. Then.
- 42:47Speaker 2: The point here is, of course that the UK has
- 42:49Speaker 2: been through similar horrors a number of times. We don't
- 42:52Speaker 2: see we've learned any of the lessons that we might
- 42:55Speaker 2: have from the UK's experience.
- 43:00Speaker 19: They know, Chris, they were talking on radio this morning
- 43:02Speaker 19: obviously because there was those attacks in Manchester at the synagogue. Recently,
- 43:07Speaker 19: they've had their anti Semitism attacks repeatedly here.
- 43:11Speaker 1: In the UK.
- 43:12Speaker 19: They have stepped up security across the UK in places
- 43:16Speaker 19: where Jewish people congregate, synagogue, schools and other parts of
- 43:22Speaker 19: the country. There's no doubt that the UK is watching
- 43:25Speaker 19: this extremely closely with a fear of something might happen here,
- 43:30Speaker 19: Because Chris, this just doesn't happen in Australia. And to
- 43:33Speaker 19: hear that it is happening, to watch these images from
- 43:37Speaker 19: here in the UK of that country that so many
- 43:40Speaker 19: Aussies we live over here, Dearly Love, is just absolutely heartbreaking.
- 43:47Speaker 2: It's heartbreaking. Thanks so much for joining us, Sofia. I
- 43:50Speaker 2: appreciate it. Sofia's worth their live from London. Yes, we've
- 43:53Speaker 2: had a number of Islamist terrorist attacks in this country.
- 43:56Speaker 2: A number of others foiled too. But this is our
- 43:59Speaker 2: first mass casualty attack. It's a chilling time, a chilling
- 44:04Speaker 2: day for this country. Hopefully we'll wake up to the
- 44:07Speaker 2: threat around us. Let's take another break. I'll be back
- 44:10Speaker 2: with Gematon Yuni after this. I told you this Prime
- 44:19Speaker 2: Minister and these political leaders would look for any distraction
- 44:23Speaker 2: from their own failure to combat anti Semitism and Islamist extremism.
- 44:28Speaker 2: And of course gun control was the most likely option,
- 44:31Speaker 2: and sure enough, out of national cabinet today they've tried
- 44:33Speaker 2: to put the focus on gun control. Now, sure someone
- 44:36Speaker 2: on an ASIO watch list should not have access to weapons,
- 44:40Speaker 2: but now new gun controls are being promulgated out of
- 44:44Speaker 2: national Cabinet, trying to set the agenda in that direction.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Let me bring in Gematon Yuni, who always catches up
- 44:49Speaker 2: with this on a Monday, from GT Communications.
- 44:51Speaker 1: This is so predictable.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Jemma talking about accelerating a national firearms register, more secure
- 44:57Speaker 2: and criminal intelligence checks on firearms life. This is limiting
- 45:01Speaker 2: the number of firearms held by one individual and limiting
- 45:04Speaker 2: open ended firearms licensing.
- 45:07Speaker 1: That doesn't stop his littlest extremists. They will use anything.
- 45:10Speaker 22: This Prime Minister continues to deal with problems that don't exist.
- 45:13Speaker 22: Australian gun laws are already amongst the toughest in the world.
- 45:18Speaker 22: But to your point, why is anyone on an ASIO
- 45:20Speaker 22: watch list allowed to have a gun license? That's the
- 45:22Speaker 22: first thing. But the second thing is this Prime Minister
- 45:25Speaker 22: has all the spine of a wet biscuit. He refuses
- 45:28Speaker 22: to confront the problem that's right in front of him.
- 45:31Speaker 22: And the thing that I would say to him tonight is,
- 45:33Speaker 22: Prime Minister, the weapon isn't the firearm. The weapon is
- 45:35Speaker 22: the ideology that you refuse to confront. And here we
- 45:38Speaker 22: all are, and you and I have had circular conversations
- 45:41Speaker 22: over the last two years about what is the tipping
- 45:43Speaker 22: point to people who say, oh my god, I can't
- 45:46Speaker 22: believe this happened. Where have you been this? Where have
- 45:48Speaker 22: you been?
- 45:50Speaker 2: Nine to eleven happened with box cutters, correct and flying lessons.
- 45:55Speaker 1: We've seen cars and trucks and buses used. We've seen
- 45:58Speaker 1: matches used, We've seen knives used relentlessly.
- 46:02Speaker 2: It seems to me that Anthony Albanezi and the other
- 46:05Speaker 2: leaders involved in this will do anything except talk about
- 46:08Speaker 2: the ideology.
- 46:09Speaker 1: They need to confront.
- 46:10Speaker 22: This is an inconvenient, difficult conversation that either by design
- 46:15Speaker 22: or default, the Prime Minister seems unwilling to lead. And
- 46:18Speaker 22: I feel like it is incredibly insulting to the lives
- 46:21Speaker 22: who are lost here and to the rest of us
- 46:24Speaker 22: in the community who expect more from our government to say, oh,
- 46:27Speaker 22: it's about gun laws. I'm old enough to remember Port Arthur.
- 46:30Speaker 22: That was reform, that was needed, reform. I've never run
- 46:34Speaker 22: Asio Chris obviously, but again, why does anybody on a
- 46:38Speaker 22: CEO watch list have a gun license? Surely that's a
- 46:42Speaker 22: question we need answered absolutely now.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Jemma, you've been such a strong advocate for the Jewish
- 46:47Speaker 2: community in this country, the Australians who are Jewish. You
- 46:50Speaker 2: know the community well, you've been to Israel twice. You've
- 46:53Speaker 2: been a strong advocate pleading for governments to take more action.
- 46:58Speaker 2: How have they failed agents who are Jewish?
- 47:01Speaker 22: But by pretending it's not a problem, by responding with
- 47:04Speaker 22: words instead of actions, by saying things like there's no
- 47:07Speaker 22: place for antisemitism in Australia.
- 47:09Speaker 1: Guess what there is?
- 47:10Speaker 22: There is because look at where we are tonight. It's
- 47:13Speaker 22: not that they've it's not that they've welcomed with open arms,
- 47:17Speaker 22: that they've made a cup of tea and said stay
- 47:18Speaker 22: as long as you like. And you can say things
- 47:20Speaker 22: like we won't stand for it, we won't be divided,
- 47:23Speaker 22: but that is just empty rhetoric.
- 47:26Speaker 2: What do we do though, about the media conversation, because
- 47:29Speaker 2: that's a big part of it. The politicians get away
- 47:31Speaker 2: with this because they have large parts of the media
- 47:34Speaker 2: that want to avoid that conversation too, large parts of.
- 47:37Speaker 1: The media that want to demonize Israel that will.
- 47:40Speaker 2: Run untrue hummus propaganda in their news without even labeling
- 47:45Speaker 2: it or exposing it. We have to have honest conversations
- 47:49Speaker 2: in order to combat this problem.
- 47:50Speaker 22: That's a question I genuinely struggle to know what the
- 47:53Speaker 22: answer is. For I mean, with the ABC, they are
- 47:55Speaker 22: a taxpayer funded organization, so there needs to be a
- 47:58Speaker 22: greater degree of accountability there. That's your money and mine.
- 48:01Speaker 22: As for the private media, for want of a better phrase,
- 48:04Speaker 22: I don't know what the answer is. But here we are,
- 48:07Speaker 22: weeks and weeks after the ceasefire and most of the
- 48:09Speaker 22: hostages have been released, and you see much of the
- 48:13Speaker 22: global media who condemned Israel now reluctantly saying, oh, well,
- 48:17Speaker 22: Amnesty International has actually turned around and said it was
- 48:19Speaker 22: terrible October seven. It's even a broken clock will tell
- 48:23Speaker 22: the time accurately twice a day. I mean, that's what
- 48:27Speaker 22: we're dealing with here.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Gematoniini, thanks so much for joining.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Us, you, my friend, That's just about all I've got
- 48:32Speaker 2: for you here from Bondai Pavilion, bringing you the story
- 48:35Speaker 2: I thought I would never have to share with you
- 48:37Speaker 2: at this place that so many Australians loved so deeply,
- 48:40Speaker 2: a place of great happiness, of great tolerance, of great diversity.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Now a place where fifteen innocent people at least were
- 48:50Speaker 2: murdered by Islamist extremists, where a country has to confront
- 48:54Speaker 2: the anti Semitism and Islamist extremism in its miss.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Well, we'll see more of this. Stay watching here on
- 49:00Speaker 1: Sky News tonight, and Peter Kredlin is up next
