- 0:00She was a CrossFit OG,
- 0:02always around the scene since the
- 0:04beginning.
- 0:05And now she's one of CrossFit's newest red
- 0:08shirts.
- 0:08Kelly Clark is next.
- 0:30The game is in trouble.
- 0:31I've been in my death for the piece
- 0:32of the puzzle.
- 0:33I got it for real
- 0:55What is going on everybody?
- 0:56Welcome to lunch or maybe dinner with the
- 1:00Clydesdale today.
- 1:02We have my friend Kelly Clark here.
- 1:06And I know this is a new format.
- 1:08This is only like the third or fourth
- 1:10person we've had on since we've switched
- 1:12this over.
- 1:13And these are not going to be traditional
- 1:15interviews.
- 1:15I've done so many of the traditional
- 1:17interviews.
- 1:19I just want to sit and chat with
- 1:21friends and have a good time.
- 1:23And if like news breaks,
- 1:24we'll talk about it.
- 1:25Like within the last hour, news broke.
- 1:28So we're going to start there.
- 1:31So I'm going to pull this up.
- 1:33It was announced on Dallin Pepper's
- 1:35website on Instagram and by the barbell
- 1:38spin that I'll try to blow this up.
- 1:42Sure I will.
- 1:44Here it is.
- 1:46He says,
- 1:47I guess that bike in SoCal messed me
- 1:49up more than I thought.
- 1:51It's been a long few weeks and I'm
- 1:53heartbroken to not be heading to Scotland
- 1:55for Rogue.
- 1:56Saw signs of rhabdo early on and thought
- 1:58I could clear things up and get back
- 2:00into training.
- 2:01Turns out I couldn't and continued to see
- 2:04major issues as weeks went on.
- 2:06After speaking with a doctor and getting
- 2:07lots of blood work done,
- 2:08I've been medically advised to take a few
- 2:10weeks off and make sure I'm coming back
- 2:12in twenty twenty six the way I envision,
- 2:15which is to wreck shop.
- 2:17Bill and Katie,
- 2:18you guys put on the best show of
- 2:19the year.
- 2:20I'll be back.
- 2:22So you've been around this sport for ever.
- 2:27Right.
- 2:28And I don't mean to say that in
- 2:30a way that you're old,
- 2:32but you've been around since the
- 2:35beginning.
- 2:37Have you experienced rhabdo before?
- 2:41Maybe a minor case of rhabdo once or
- 2:44twice,
- 2:45but nothing that's like sent me to a
- 2:48doctor or the hospital or anything.
- 2:52been a coach as well have you seen
- 2:54any any other athletes that i have never
- 3:00i have never seen any of my athletes
- 3:02get rabdo um i've heard of people getting
- 3:06rabdo but um no you know where i
- 3:11where i hear about it most often these
- 3:13days is um in our firefighters in the
- 3:17fire academies wow
- 3:21And nobody that we work with,
- 3:23but regularly in the fire academies.
- 3:27Well, that's a nice segue.
- 3:33I do want to come back to this
- 3:34a little bit.
- 3:35Well, let's finish this off.
- 3:36Off topic.
- 3:38Did you see SoCal, the team,
- 3:42where he went to the edge on that
- 3:47three workout thing?
- 3:49Yeah.
- 3:54Yeah.
- 3:54So it was an air runner for, um,
- 3:56well,
- 3:58I don't even remember the distance and
- 4:00then over the bar and then the echo
- 4:05bike for fifty cows.
- 4:10Yeah.
- 4:11You're a competitor too, right?
- 4:15It's not every day you see someone go
- 4:17that far to the dark or whatever we
- 4:22want to call it, to push.
- 4:26Do you think you could get to that
- 4:28level?
- 4:30I think only someone like Dolan could give
- 4:33himself rhabdo on a workout like that.
- 4:35I think that's...
- 4:38I don't think I could get there on
- 4:42a workout like that for me, especially,
- 4:45uh, because I suck at the echo bike,
- 4:47but, but, but yeah,
- 4:50I think that most people could not bring
- 4:55that level of intensity to do that kind
- 4:59of damage to themselves on that workout.
- 5:03That's awesome.
- 5:05You have to be fit,
- 5:07as fit as he is,
- 5:09and the amplification of how far he then
- 5:11has to push past to get Rabdo.
- 5:15Because I'm assuming when you see it in
- 5:17firefighters,
- 5:17it's because they're not fit enough when
- 5:20they try to do the big task at
- 5:23the academy.
- 5:25yeah well yeah either not fit enough or
- 5:28not hydrated um you know they they went
- 5:32spent the weekend drinking and then came
- 5:33back to the academy on monday body weight
- 5:36murph you know like that kind of stuff
- 5:40um but like but yeah in general either
- 5:45is either you know hydration plus
- 5:47intensity or or you know um
- 5:51Improper scaling is a thing that I've
- 5:55heard of, that kind of stuff.
- 5:57But I think it's really rare that you
- 6:00see someone that fit just do that much
- 6:05damage.
- 6:07The only time we really probably get to
- 6:09see it is at the games.
- 6:11You know,
- 6:11there's the most famous cases of the Murph
- 6:15in Carson where Annie kind of starts
- 6:18wobbling.
- 6:19Kara doesn't even know where she's at in
- 6:22that last little sprint to the finish
- 6:24line.
- 6:25And I don't know if they went as
- 6:26far as Dallin did.
- 6:27No, I know.
- 6:30for more heat injury issues, right?
- 6:32Like that's not, that's not,
- 6:34we're not talking about rhabdo there.
- 6:38Um, I mean, I guess,
- 6:39I guess they could go hand in hand
- 6:41potentially, but yeah, I, yeah,
- 6:46that's a thing.
- 6:49It is.
- 6:49It's not something you see every day.
- 6:52And, uh,
- 6:52the fact that he is willing to go
- 6:55to that,
- 6:55do you think that it affects him going
- 6:58forward?
- 7:00in pushing that hard again that's the only
- 7:04uh probably depends on how much damage he
- 7:09did and how bad it is um and
- 7:14how well he heals heals up um and
- 7:17takes care of himself i know um who
- 7:19else shelby neal recently um got rabdo um
- 7:26more of him
- 7:28I think she was taking some time off
- 7:29and then came straight back into Murph and
- 7:32didn't hydrate appropriately afterwards,
- 7:34I think is the story that she told.
- 7:37But I think it's been kind of a
- 7:39longer duration issue for her.
- 7:45She's had a hard time coming back from
- 7:47it than she expected.
- 7:49So I think if you do enough damage,
- 7:51it can affect your ability to bring that
- 7:54level of intensity back.
- 7:56in the future um but yeah that's maybe
- 7:59out of my scope of practice yeah you
- 8:04just worry because dallin and shelby both
- 8:07are young athletes who have a long career
- 8:09ahead of them and you hope that this
- 8:12doesn't affect anything moving forward
- 8:16yeah i would really hope
- 8:19But I think that I'm a big believer
- 8:21in, you know, I like PT clinics,
- 8:23so I'm a big believer that if you
- 8:25really commit to doing the rehab and
- 8:27recovering properly,
- 8:30I think
- 8:31In those cases,
- 8:33I think probably the biggest danger is
- 8:34that he tries to come back too fast,
- 8:37do too much too early,
- 8:39and then never fully recovers or doesn't
- 8:42fully heal or sets himself back.
- 8:45But he's got good resources around him.
- 8:47And I'm sure he's got a good team
- 8:49that's giving him some good advice.
- 8:51So hopefully he'll, you know,
- 8:54take the right steps and
- 8:56Yeah,
- 8:56I think my biggest worry isn't physically.
- 8:58I think he'll be, you know,
- 8:59if you look at the sickness, wellness,
- 9:01fitness continuum,
- 9:02he's clear over on the one side of
- 9:05the pendulum.
- 9:06So his recovery will be fine.
- 9:07I think it's the mental piece that I
- 9:09would worry about the most.
- 9:11Interesting.
- 9:12Yeah.
- 9:14You think he could be scared to go
- 9:15there again?
- 9:17That's what I'm worried about.
- 9:18Yeah.
- 9:20Or maybe he only pushes to eight thousand
- 9:23RPMs instead of nine.
- 9:26I mean, would it really matter?
- 9:29Yeah.
- 9:29Everybody else anyway.
- 9:35True, true.
- 9:36But if you're trying to be a games
- 9:38champion, which is his goal,
- 9:40and he has made that abundantly clear,
- 9:44there are going to be times where in
- 9:45a competition you're going to have to
- 9:47push.
- 9:47Go there.
- 9:49And will he hit the pedal to the
- 9:51metal again?
- 9:53I think he will.
- 9:53I have faith in him.
- 9:54I think he's tough.
- 9:58He'll get himself mentally rehabbed as
- 10:02well as physically.
- 10:04Ernie Garza said instead of a hundred and
- 10:06ten percent,
- 10:06he's going to go a hundred and eight.
- 10:07Yeah, yeah.
- 10:08Yeah.
- 10:12The men's field is just so stinking close
- 10:15these days.
- 10:16Like, it's with, I mean,
- 10:21we said on this show,
- 10:22there were ten guys that could have won
- 10:24the games this year.
- 10:24Yeah.
- 10:25Yeah.
- 10:26Right.
- 10:27And so like when it's all that close
- 10:29and you're fighting for every point
- 10:30because you're all swapping places,
- 10:33like every little,
- 10:34every little percent matters.
- 10:35That's that men's field is a really tough
- 10:39fight.
- 10:40I mean, and that is something you are,
- 10:45you are familiar with.
- 10:46If people don't remember you missed out on
- 10:49the games twice by like a Nat's eyelash.
- 10:55that like one percent would it could have
- 10:57made a difference right but you know
- 11:04you're living your best life now I am
- 11:07I am old news yeah
- 11:11So I do want to get into the
- 11:12firefighting thing,
- 11:14but I saw your sweatshirt and it's so
- 11:16funny.
- 11:16Yesterday we were looking or Sunday night,
- 11:18we were looking up the trademarks that
- 11:20CrossFit has.
- 11:22And you know that they've let that
- 11:24trademark expire.
- 11:26Oh, that logo.
- 11:27I mean, that doesn't surprise me,
- 11:30but I didn't know that.
- 11:32Yeah.
- 11:33I was shocked.
- 11:34Yeah.
- 11:34It says like dead or abandoned on the
- 11:37trademark site.
- 11:39day okay because um the new podcast the
- 11:44sport of fitness it was someone told me
- 11:47that they have they trademarked the sport
- 11:49of fitness so they own that and i
- 11:52was just going out to see like what
- 11:53else have they trademarked because like
- 11:56someone like the wfp
- 11:58Can't even use that now.
- 11:59They can't use CrossFit.
- 12:01They can't use sport of fitness.
- 12:03Like they are really limited in what they
- 12:04can do because of the trademarks.
- 12:07It turns out just meandering about like,
- 12:09what all have they trademarked?
- 12:11They have three, two, one go.
- 12:13They have Murph.
- 12:15They have so many pukey,
- 12:19forging elite fitness.
- 12:23Speaking of breaking news,
- 12:24forging elite fitness,
- 12:25big marketing campaign yesterday.
- 12:29What are your thoughts on that?
- 12:31I think it's,
- 12:32I love what's coming out of the training
- 12:35and the education department right now.
- 12:37I think that it's good.
- 12:42I don't know.
- 12:43It's just nice to see them.
- 12:46I guess I used to use their words,
- 12:47you know,
- 12:48like put the stake in the ground and,
- 12:50and hold it there, you know,
- 12:51like plant the flag and remind everybody
- 12:55who we are and why we're here and
- 12:58and what this is all about.
- 12:59You know, I think,
- 13:00I think it's always easy to get lost
- 13:02in the noise or go off into the
- 13:04weeds and, you know,
- 13:08and having CrossFit to really take on the
- 13:14task of making sure that they like are
- 13:20holding the flag and that's, and that's,
- 13:22you know, they're,
- 13:22they're anchoring us to our mission and
- 13:24our purpose.
- 13:25And I think that's,
- 13:27That's what they should be doing.
- 13:29You know, I love forging elite fitness.
- 13:32I've said it forever.
- 13:34I started CrossFit over five hundred
- 13:35pounds.
- 13:37I wasn't looking for Timu fitness.
- 13:39I wanted elite fitness.
- 13:41Right.
- 13:42If I'm going to go if I'm going
- 13:43to put in the work,
- 13:44I want it to be the best.
- 13:46And so I love that because I think
- 13:48people say that only reaches the tip of
- 13:51the spear.
- 13:52That's not true.
- 13:53I think everybody who's looking to get fit
- 13:56wants the best they can get.
- 13:57Yeah, they want the best for them.
- 14:00Right.
- 14:01And it just has to be explained to
- 14:02them that that's what CrossFit can be.
- 14:05It can be whatever you need it to
- 14:07be in that moment.
- 14:11So I've heard a criticism.
- 14:14I want to hear your feedback on it.
- 14:21How is Harley?
- 14:23Harley's doing great.
- 14:25She's not appreciating the cold weather
- 14:27right now.
- 14:27She's got her hoodie on,
- 14:27but she's doing great.
- 14:31So the one criticism I have heard a
- 14:33little bit is that I love the video.
- 14:37I love the narration.
- 14:39I love the people in it,
- 14:42but there's no action item at the end.
- 14:43Yeah.
- 14:48So like,
- 14:49how do I get to an affiliate?
- 14:51How do I get this elite fitness you're
- 14:52talking about?
- 14:53Where do I go?
- 14:58Interesting.
- 14:59Yeah.
- 15:02And it was brought to my attention.
- 15:04I did not think of this on my
- 15:05own.
- 15:05Just like I was,
- 15:08I was like all gung ho when I
- 15:09first saw it all pumped up,
- 15:11ready to go.
- 15:12But then someone said, what next?
- 15:14Yeah.
- 15:17You know,
- 15:19I think it's on your end.
- 15:23Hopefully just your end.
- 15:26You know, I feel like... I don't know.
- 15:30I'm not a media person,
- 15:31so maybe someone would argue with me about
- 15:34this.
- 15:36But I do think that there's...
- 15:40I don't know.
- 15:40I don't feel that there needs to be
- 15:42an action item.
- 15:44How would they do that?
- 15:46How would they send you to a specific
- 15:49affiliate?
- 15:50They maybe could link you to the affiliate
- 15:52map and you could find an affiliate near
- 15:55you.
- 15:56Maybe that would be cool.
- 16:01But I think that CrossFit's job is to
- 16:04just keep sending the message and
- 16:12I don't know.
- 16:13Let me counter your argument.
- 16:16Let me counter your argument.
- 16:19Isn't their job also to support the
- 16:21affiliates?
- 16:24So at the end of that,
- 16:26if the narrator says, if you want,
- 16:28if you want this,
- 16:30go to the link in our bio and
- 16:33check out the closest location for you.
- 16:35Yeah.
- 16:38Well, as simple as that.
- 16:42And then you,
- 16:43it's a link to the affiliate map.
- 16:44Yeah.
- 16:47I think that'd be cool.
- 16:48I don't think I have a strong opinion
- 16:49on that because I don't,
- 16:52and maybe I don't understand media as
- 16:55much,
- 16:55but I could see how from like a
- 16:58media marketing perspective,
- 17:00if you want to have kind of a
- 17:01call to action with everything.
- 17:05Well, I think the message is awesome.
- 17:08Yeah.
- 17:08And if you're selling something,
- 17:10where do I buy it?
- 17:12Right.
- 17:13And I think that's the piece that's
- 17:14missing.
- 17:16Yeah.
- 17:17If you show me a cool toy and
- 17:19I'm like, man, I want that toy.
- 17:22And then you don't tell me where I
- 17:23can buy it.
- 17:25The message is wasted on me.
- 17:31Just thoughts.
- 17:32Okay.
- 17:33I'm not being uber critical.
- 17:35I just, I don't.
- 17:36I can see that.
- 17:37I can see that.
- 17:41Ken Walter says dogs are the best.
- 17:42Dogs are the best.
- 17:47My dog and I have been having a
- 17:48little, we, we,
- 17:51we need some relationship advice,
- 17:53counseling.
- 17:57He thinks he owns my house.
- 17:58Yeah.
- 18:00I'm trying to tell him he does not.
- 18:01But you know, we'll work through it.
- 18:07We'll work through it.
- 18:07I'm sure.
- 18:08Good luck with that, yeah.
- 18:11I think I let my dog win that
- 18:13one a while ago.
- 18:15My wife is allowing him to own the
- 18:17house.
- 18:18And so then when I say, no,
- 18:21you don't, he's like,
- 18:22I'll just wait till mom gets home.
- 18:24Right.
- 18:26He knows how to play you.
- 18:28Yeah, yeah.
- 18:31Yeah, well, cool.
- 18:32So you've been very busy in your...
- 18:36it's weird.
- 18:36Cause I talked to you at one point
- 18:37and you're like, yeah, I'm retiring.
- 18:39I'm taking a step back.
- 18:41Yeah.
- 18:41I see you just as much.
- 18:46So, so in,
- 18:48in addition to continuing to compete at
- 18:50the age group level,
- 18:51and let me ask you about that.
- 18:52What is that?
- 18:53Is that,
- 18:54how is that different from you for you
- 18:56than the elite division?
- 19:00Uh, I think when in the elite division,
- 19:05it,
- 19:08it was more of
- 19:11like a career, you know,
- 19:13that was like the thing I was doing
- 19:15with my life to some extent.
- 19:17I was coaching as well, but, you know,
- 19:19I limited the number of hours that I
- 19:21was coaching so that I could maximize my
- 19:23performance in the gym.
- 19:25And it's not just the training hours that
- 19:27you're putting in,
- 19:28it's the recovery time and the sleep you
- 19:30need and, you know,
- 19:31the meal prepping and this, you know,
- 19:33managing your stress levels.
- 19:35You can't burn the candle at both ends.
- 19:37And so, you know, you're eating, sleeping,
- 19:38breathing, you know,
- 19:40competition and performance.
- 19:42And, um,
- 19:45I think now in the master's division,
- 19:50this is the thing that I do for
- 19:53fun.
- 19:54This is the thing that I do as
- 19:55like a stress relief.
- 19:57This is the thing, you know,
- 19:58I have a full career.
- 19:59I have, you know, a social life and,
- 20:04um,
- 20:05I am investing more into my career and
- 20:07my relationships and CrossFit is the thing
- 20:09to celebrate.
- 20:11The thing that I do to celebrate what
- 20:13my body can do to like, um,
- 20:16you know, I still have the fitness.
- 20:18It's still in me to compete.
- 20:20I still have that mindset of like,
- 20:23if I'm going to do it,
- 20:25that I want to,
- 20:26I want to do it well.
- 20:28um with the bandwidth that i have and
- 20:31i still have that drive i still have
- 20:33that competitive edge to me uh so in
- 20:36competition you know i'm there to compete
- 20:40but but it's it's the thing that i
- 20:44do for fun with my time it's just
- 20:46a little bit less pressure less stressful
- 20:49and i find that a lot of the
- 20:50other masters athletes are similar the
- 20:53conversations in the
- 20:55in the warmup area are different.
- 20:57You know, uh,
- 20:59when you're in the open division,
- 21:00people are there to do the thing and
- 21:02they're zoned in and they're focused and
- 21:04they've spent the whole year training for
- 21:07this thing.
- 21:08And in the master's divisions, it's like,
- 21:11how are your kids?
- 21:12How's the family?
- 21:13What, how's the job?
- 21:14How's the, you know,
- 21:15and people are kind of chit chatting and,
- 21:17and don't get me wrong, we're competitive.
- 21:19Everybody wants to win.
- 21:20Uh, but yeah,
- 21:22you know,
- 21:22like we're focused when it's time to be
- 21:24focused,
- 21:24but it's just a little bit more relaxed
- 21:26than everybody has lived a little bit more
- 21:29life.
- 21:30You know, if that makes sense, it does.
- 21:35And it, I, when I'm at the mat,
- 21:38I say this all the time.
- 21:39I would mind.
- 21:41I get more enjoyment at the age group
- 21:43games than I do at the elite games.
- 21:45Yeah.
- 21:45Yeah.
- 21:46Because I can sit down on a bench
- 21:48and have a conversation with you,
- 21:50and you're not all stressed out.
- 21:52You know what I mean?
- 21:53It's just you're there to have a good
- 21:55time,
- 21:56and not that you don't want to win.
- 21:59Right.
- 22:00Everybody wants to win.
- 22:01It's just there's so many priorities in
- 22:04life now that that isn't the main one
- 22:07anymore.
- 22:08Yeah.
- 22:09Yeah.
- 22:10And like, yeah, I mean,
- 22:12that was a really cool thing to like
- 22:15just be walking around the convention
- 22:18center and like sit down and chat with
- 22:20you.
- 22:20And that was actually something that I
- 22:22talked to my team ahead of time about.
- 22:24We were talking about, you know,
- 22:25do we get an Airbnb?
- 22:27Do we get a hotel attached to the,
- 22:29you know, that kind of thing.
- 22:30And I specifically said,
- 22:33I want to hang out.
- 22:34in the athlete area.
- 22:35Like I normally,
- 22:36what I would do is I would go,
- 22:38like I would set up my own camp
- 22:39where I would get the hotel attached to
- 22:42it.
- 22:42And as soon as an event was done,
- 22:44I would be back in my hotel room
- 22:45doing recovery things, doing eating,
- 22:48being in my own head space,
- 22:49getting ready for the next thing,
- 22:50you know, or,
- 22:52or just de-stressing with my crew,
- 22:54you know, and I,
- 22:55and I would be more isolated because I
- 22:57was just keeping myself focused and not
- 23:00you know,
- 23:00letting energy bleed out anywhere else.
- 23:02And I,
- 23:03I specifically talked to my team ahead of
- 23:04time and said, I want to,
- 23:05I want to make friends.
- 23:06I want to have fun.
- 23:07I want to talk to people, you know,
- 23:09I want to see everybody.
- 23:11I want to enjoy the whole full experience,
- 23:14not just to be there to perform.
- 23:17And that was cool to see because like,
- 23:19I saw you joking around with competitors
- 23:21or people in other age groups,
- 23:23like just laughing and having a good time.
- 23:25And, and it was really cool to see.
- 23:28Yeah.
- 23:29Um,
- 23:30So conversely,
- 23:31you said like when you were competing
- 23:33elite,
- 23:34you shrunk back your coaching hours to
- 23:36make sure that you had time to perform
- 23:38and all that kind of stuff.
- 23:40Now that you're not in the elite division
- 23:42anymore,
- 23:43is coaching like your primary job and have
- 23:46you upped those hours again?
- 23:48And what kind of fulfillment does that
- 23:49give you?
- 23:54I coach a lot of hours now.
- 24:01And that's the thing that I'm doing with
- 24:03my life now.
- 24:03This is the thing that I'm putting a
- 24:05hundred percent into now.
- 24:07And I,
- 24:11and more fulfilled than I imagined when I,
- 24:15I think a lot of athletes imagine a
- 24:18lot of athletes get scared when they pull
- 24:20back from competing that they're,
- 24:23you know,
- 24:23what am I going to do with my
- 24:24life?
- 24:24How do I, what is my identity now?
- 24:27What's my purpose.
- 24:28And for me, I,
- 24:30Coaching is just as fulfilling,
- 24:33if not more so,
- 24:33because it's not as selfish of a pursuit.
- 24:36And not that there's anything wrong with
- 24:39that, but I competed for me.
- 24:44In all honesty,
- 24:46I competed because I loved it.
- 24:49And that was the big dream that I
- 24:50had.
- 24:51And...
- 24:53my coaching, I'm passionate about it.
- 24:55I get a lot out of it.
- 24:57I, I learned a lot from my clients,
- 25:00but I am also giving so much and
- 25:05it's so much of a selfless, uh,
- 25:08pursuit and it gives back so much that
- 25:13I just think I find it so fulfilling
- 25:16and meaningful.
- 25:18Um,
- 25:20And I actually,
- 25:22I have a hard time not giving too
- 25:24much, you know,
- 25:27trying to make sure that I'm also taking
- 25:29care of myself and have some level of
- 25:32balance in my life.
- 25:32I'm not great at balance.
- 25:36Is that what made you a great athlete?
- 25:37And now it's making you a great coach,
- 25:41but really hard to find balancing that
- 25:44out.
- 25:44Because my next question is,
- 25:48you've become a red shirt.
- 25:49You're now seminar staff with CrossFit.
- 25:52At what point did you say, man,
- 25:53that would be really cool.
- 25:55And I need to go for that.
- 25:57Oh, the red shirt.
- 26:00Actually,
- 26:01I wanted to be on seminar staff ever
- 26:03since I got my level two.
- 26:07And when was that?
- 26:08That was.
- 26:10Twenty.
- 26:14Fifteen.
- 26:16Sixteen.
- 26:19Maybe twenty sixteen.
- 26:23Yeah, something like that.
- 26:24Probably twenty sixteen.
- 26:28It's really early on in your what we
- 26:31would know as your competitive career.
- 26:33Yeah.
- 26:34Six years into CrossFit.
- 26:36Yeah.
- 26:37Uh huh.
- 26:40Yeah.
- 26:40No,
- 26:41I did my level two and I watched
- 26:43my coaches.
- 26:45at the level two,
- 26:47just mold people and work with people and
- 26:50dig deep into coaching.
- 26:51And I just was like,
- 26:52I want to do that.
- 26:53That looks like the greatest job.
- 26:58And I loved my level two.
- 26:59I also think that was my favorite
- 27:00certificate course that I did was that
- 27:04like just digging deep into the skill of
- 27:08coaching.
- 27:11It was so much fun.
- 27:13Yeah.
- 27:14And it was so unique to anything else.
- 27:16Like you're not just learning material.
- 27:18You're not just taking in concepts and
- 27:20theories and, uh, you know,
- 27:23you're doing the thing and you're learning
- 27:25how to be better at doing the thing.
- 27:29So off of that,
- 27:30I have a bunch of questions.
- 27:31Okay.
- 27:32So,
- 27:33so you wanted to be a seminar staff
- 27:35member all the way back to twenty fifteen,
- 27:37twenty sixteen.
- 27:38Hmm.
- 27:39You live in Northern California and you're
- 27:42close to the ranch and you've been used
- 27:44to test workouts for Dave.
- 27:46Yep.
- 27:47So you have connections.
- 27:50What the hell took so long?
- 27:54Because I can only do one thing well
- 27:58at a time.
- 28:03I actually remember at the end of my
- 28:05level two, I walked up to Pat Barber.
- 28:07He was one of my coaches.
- 28:09And I said,
- 28:10what do I have to do to get
- 28:11on staff?
- 28:13And he basically said,
- 28:13you have to get your level three at
- 28:15the bare minimum.
- 28:17and you know after that you can apply
- 28:20do your internship etc and i said okay
- 28:23uh so i kind of put myself on
- 28:25that path but then my competitive career
- 28:27started taking off and i just felt like
- 28:32what it took for me to compete at
- 28:35the level that i wanted to compete at
- 28:36i didn't have it in me to also
- 28:40be at that time seminar strap was
- 28:42traveling all over the world every weekend
- 28:45it was you know um and i just
- 28:48didn't think i could do both well um
- 28:53and i don't like if i'm if i'm
- 28:58gonna do something i want to be really
- 29:01good at it so in the early days
- 29:04of crossfit yeah
- 29:07Annie was red shirt.
- 29:08Yeah.
- 29:09Rich was red shirt.
- 29:10Kalipa was red shirt.
- 29:13Camille,
- 29:13like all these big athletes were red
- 29:16shirts doing both at the same time.
- 29:18I know.
- 29:20What kind of respect do you have for
- 29:21them that they were able to pull that
- 29:23off?
- 29:25Oh, cute.
- 29:27But I just had a seminar with Katie
- 29:29Hogan.
- 29:29I love Katie.
- 29:32Last weekend.
- 29:32I love Katie, too.
- 29:35She's the best.
- 29:36It was so fun.
- 29:37We had a great time together.
- 29:37I haven't seen her in a long time.
- 29:38This was the first time we got to
- 29:40work together on staff.
- 29:41So it was awesome.
- 29:43But I just had this conversation with her
- 29:46where she was telling me about...
- 29:50uh coaching a seminar literally the
- 29:53weekend before she competed at the games
- 29:56and she was telling me that she flew
- 30:01It was like down in San Diego or
- 30:03something.
- 30:03And then she flew back home only to
- 30:05turn around the next day and fly back
- 30:07for the games.
- 30:08And she was just telling me how she
- 30:09was on the airplane crying because she was
- 30:13so tired and so scared about, you know,
- 30:16going straight from a seminar to the
- 30:17games.
- 30:18Like it's a lot of energy to go
- 30:22through a seminar.
- 30:23You are on and you are, you know,
- 30:26driving the energy all weekend long.
- 30:31And,
- 30:31and then to turn around and go compete
- 30:33at the caves.
- 30:34I think, I think it was a lot.
- 30:38And she probably was an affiliate owner at
- 30:39that time too.
- 30:40Right.
- 30:41Oh God.
- 30:45I don't know.
- 30:46Cause a lot of those,
- 30:47a lot of those people were.
- 30:48Yeah.
- 30:49Some of them were.
- 30:49Do you add that into the mix?
- 30:51Holy cow.
- 30:52Right.
- 30:52Yeah.
- 30:53I know.
- 30:54Also, I mean, there is,
- 30:55I do think that like,
- 30:57she was also telling me, she's like, yeah,
- 30:59I competed at the games and I didn't
- 31:01have a strict muscle up, you know?
- 31:04So like,
- 31:07there is a different level of athletic
- 31:10ability now to compete at that level.
- 31:14Uh, whereas, you know,
- 31:16I like talked to Pat and a few
- 31:18of like the real OGs and they were
- 31:21like, yeah,
- 31:21we just signed up and showed up at
- 31:22the ranch, you know?
- 31:24Um,
- 31:27uh and so like there there was a
- 31:31turning point i feel like i was always
- 31:33just behind you know every time i unlocked
- 31:36a new level of my fitness they just
- 31:39kept raising the bar so i was like
- 31:42just underneath that line um do you think
- 31:47that made you a better coach
- 31:49Oh yeah.
- 31:50Because like you now know that you knew
- 31:52what it meant to have the drive and
- 31:55the work to get that next thing.
- 31:58And we all have that next thing,
- 32:00whether it be your first box jump,
- 32:02your first pull up, your first muscle up,
- 32:04whatever it is,
- 32:05every athlete that walks into that gym has
- 32:07something they're striving for.
- 32:09Yeah.
- 32:10Yeah.
- 32:11Oh, I think, yeah,
- 32:12I think being an athlete has absolutely
- 32:16made me a better coach.
- 32:17Um,
- 32:19because I've had to pick apart everything
- 32:21that I'm doing.
- 32:22I've done everything so systematically and
- 32:25so intentionally and deliberately that
- 32:26I've really put a lot of thought into
- 32:30every single thing that I do.
- 32:32And that helps me then break it down,
- 32:35communicate it,
- 32:37empathize with people that are trying to
- 32:41do their thing,
- 32:41trying to chase their goals.
- 32:45So during the process of becoming a
- 32:47seminar staff member,
- 32:49what was the hardest part?
- 32:55Uh, uh, I think me for me,
- 33:01the hardest part was figuring out what the
- 33:06fitting my coaching style into the format
- 33:08of the seminar.
- 33:09Um,
- 33:14the early days you're just so terrified to
- 33:17like mess something up.
- 33:19I don't think I've ever actually been so
- 33:21terrified.
- 33:21You know,
- 33:22I'm used to being on a stadium floor
- 33:25with, you know,
- 33:27thousands of people and noise and lights
- 33:29and announcers.
- 33:31And I like the adrenaline rush.
- 33:33I work well under pressure.
- 33:34I consider myself someone who can perform
- 33:37under pressure.
- 33:38And I have never been so terrified as
- 33:40I was at my first seminar.
- 33:44And even like my first internship,
- 33:46have you ever talked to Pat Barber or
- 33:49Wes Pyatt?
- 33:50They'll tell you how terrible I was.
- 33:56What is the evaluation process like after
- 33:58that first nervous internship?
- 34:02Well,
- 34:03so you go through like this internship
- 34:06process and they're mostly trying to
- 34:07figure out, are you the right person?
- 34:10You know,
- 34:11do you have the right personality?
- 34:14Are you the right fit to do this
- 34:15kind of work?
- 34:17You know,
- 34:18and they can teach you the skills of
- 34:19coaching and everything.
- 34:21They can teach you how to do the
- 34:22seminar.
- 34:23But you have to have...
- 34:27the personality that fits.
- 34:28And so that's really what they're looking
- 34:31for.
- 34:31And they did make me feel better.
- 34:33They, they, you know,
- 34:34told me stories about their first seminar
- 34:36and how bad they sucked.
- 34:37And, you know, like, don't worry.
- 34:39Like we all sucked at the first time,
- 34:41but I, you know,
- 34:42and it wasn't that I didn't know what
- 34:44I was doing.
- 34:44I just froze.
- 34:45It just,
- 34:47froze.
- 34:49I couldn't believe it.
- 34:51I walked up to him afterwards and I
- 34:52was like,
- 34:52I've been coaching for fifteen years.
- 34:55How did this happen?
- 34:59I know how bad that sucked.
- 35:01Your first seminar was an L-I or an
- 35:02L-II?
- 35:02An L-I.
- 35:05Okay.
- 35:05Do they just give you like one piece
- 35:08of it and say,
- 35:09know this and come in?
- 35:11Or do they say you got to know
- 35:12it all and then you start?
- 35:15I'm still, honestly,
- 35:17like I'm still drinking through a fire
- 35:18hose.
- 35:19I'm over a year in now on staff
- 35:22and yeah,
- 35:24the it's it's a long several years long
- 35:27process to the point where you can coach
- 35:30everything in the seminar like it's a very
- 35:32long process and they they stair-step you
- 35:35but the first few times um it was
- 35:38more like they they toss you into like
- 35:41the breakout sessions you know like
- 35:46coach the squats or the presses, you know,
- 35:48like they give you a little breakout and
- 35:50it's just coaching.
- 35:51I'm just teaching somebody how to squat or
- 35:53to deadlift.
- 35:53I do that every single day for the
- 35:55last fifteen years.
- 35:59But there is a format.
- 36:00There's kind of a formula that they use.
- 36:02The circle thing,
- 36:04the circle was really foreign to me.
- 36:06I hadn't done that in, you know,
- 36:09since my level two, essentially.
- 36:10And that's not the way I coach in
- 36:12my gym.
- 36:14And interacting with people,
- 36:16getting experience,
- 36:17like interacting with people that you've
- 36:18like just met and immediately like being
- 36:21on them is a little bit of a
- 36:24different thing than the members that you
- 36:27see every day that you connect with,
- 36:29that you learn their personalities and how
- 36:31they respond to feedback and the cues that
- 36:33they need and how far you can push
- 36:35them and everything.
- 36:37And so it's a little bit different.
- 36:42And that took me a minute to figure
- 36:44out, okay, I see what's happening.
- 36:47I see what we're doing here now.
- 36:49Have you come to the realization that the
- 36:54people there are probably just as nervous?
- 36:58When I did my first L-One,
- 37:01I've had my L-One for ten years.
- 37:03So my first L-One, Julie Fouché was...
- 37:07first breakout instructor i was shaking in
- 37:10my shoes i didn't want to be called
- 37:12out and of course i did i was
- 37:16one of the people called out and then
- 37:18i'm like so i'm i'm as nervous as
- 37:21you would be presenting that
- 37:24yeah i uh i've been told katie and
- 37:28i actually she told me that this weekend
- 37:30she's like yeah every time i think i
- 37:32you know like i get nervous about giving
- 37:34a new lecture i just remind myself they're
- 37:36more scared of me than i am of
- 37:38them and i i think that does help
- 37:44a little bit um
- 37:47But yeah, and I'm not as nervous anymore.
- 37:50I'm always nervous when I pick up a
- 37:52new lecture.
- 37:53They kind of stair-step you.
- 37:56They say like, all right,
- 37:57you're gonna teach this lecture and you
- 37:58get to prepare, you get ready for it.
- 38:01And then you give that lecture a number
- 38:03of times before they say, okay,
- 38:05you're ready for the next lecture.
- 38:06And so they give you like one little
- 38:08piece of the seminar at a time.
- 38:12And you get to like,
- 38:14dial that in and then they give you
- 38:16the next thing,
- 38:16which is actually really nice.
- 38:17That's been a really great way to progress
- 38:21through learning the material.
- 38:23Um, but yeah,
- 38:25so I'm always nervous giving a new
- 38:27lecture.
- 38:28There's a lot of pressure that I put
- 38:30on myself to make sure that I do
- 38:32a good job and, you know,
- 38:34make sure that I give people the
- 38:37experience that they came for,
- 38:38that I'm not just regurgitating
- 38:40information.
- 38:41Um,
- 38:43but, uh, I, yeah,
- 38:45I've never been as nervous as I was
- 38:46that very first seminar.
- 38:51Uh, so five AM squat club, uh,
- 38:52Julie Foucher was my games athlete crush
- 38:54back in the day.
- 38:56This is what will be cool for you.
- 38:58When she was teaching my L one,
- 39:00she was in her walking boot from tearing
- 39:03her Achilles.
- 39:04So she was at the height of her
- 39:06popularity.
- 39:08Um,
- 39:09And I think there was like eighty some
- 39:12people in our L-One that day because it
- 39:16was at Rogue because I lived here in
- 39:18Columbus.
- 39:19So it's easy to go down to Rogue
- 39:21to get your L-One.
- 39:24Well, you have such huge seminars.
- 39:28Back in the day, there were, you know,
- 39:30fifty, sixty, eighty person seminars.
- 39:34I'm kind of sad I missed those days
- 39:36where they'd have like five staff members
- 39:39on a seminar and just tons of people.
- 39:43How many are on us typically now?
- 39:47Somewhere in like the twenties.
- 39:51And what, like three staff members or?
- 39:54Uh,
- 39:55usually two until they get to the high
- 39:59twenties to thirty,
- 40:01then we'll get a third.
- 40:06Um, was?
- 40:08CrossFets asks, was?
- 40:10I'm sorry,
- 40:11Rogue is still a cool place to go.
- 40:17Yeah!
- 40:18Um...
- 40:18so okay so you're doing this whole thing
- 40:22and then in addition to that you have
- 40:25you have a program called k-two yes and
- 40:29that is to make sure that our firefighters
- 40:31stay healthy and fit so walk us through
- 40:35because when i reached out to you to
- 40:37come on with me you were actually away
- 40:40at a at a firehouse or an academy
- 40:42or something doing something with with
- 40:44them so walk us through what you're doing
- 40:46there
- 40:48So,
- 40:48we're working with the Pasadena Fire
- 40:50Academy.
- 40:52We work with Santa Cruz Fire as well,
- 40:54but when you were talking to me,
- 40:57we were down in Pasadena onboarding their
- 41:03new recruit class for their next fire
- 41:05academy.
- 41:07Our program essentially has,
- 41:10we have a few different pieces to it.
- 41:11So we go down there and we spend
- 41:15a couple of days down there talking to
- 41:17the recruits.
- 41:18We do a lot of,
- 41:19we do a complete movement assessment,
- 41:21injury risk assessment.
- 41:22We put them through like an FMS screen
- 41:25and, um,
- 41:27a Y balance test.
- 41:28And then we, you know,
- 41:30we have our own little tests and things
- 41:31that we've built out over the years.
- 41:34I put them through,
- 41:35I do some coaching with like squats and
- 41:37hinges, pushups, hanging,
- 41:40things like that.
- 41:41I look at their movement,
- 41:42make sure that they know how to do
- 41:43things properly, at least the basics.
- 41:45And then I sit down with them.
- 41:46I talk to them about stress, sleep,
- 41:49nutrition, hydration,
- 41:51all those kinds of things.
- 41:52Make sure they're, you know,
- 41:54prepared for whatever
- 41:56what not only the fire academy is going
- 41:59to demand,
- 41:59but for what the job is going to
- 42:01demand later.
- 42:03And so we,
- 42:04we try and we really try and set
- 42:05them up with a good foundation.
- 42:07These are guys that are just getting into
- 42:09firefighting and, you know,
- 42:11they're just heading into academy.
- 42:12They're brand new.
- 42:13And so I kind of see it as
- 42:15our opportunity to get them while they're
- 42:20still developing habits and still figuring
- 42:23out the rhythm of things.
- 42:24And, um,
- 42:27and try to set them up for success
- 42:30as much as possible.
- 42:31So we do all that stuff and we
- 42:34put together from all of that assessment,
- 42:38they get a corrective exercise program
- 42:41from our physical therapists.
- 42:44for ryan who owns the physical therapy
- 42:46clinic he gives them a corrective exercise
- 42:48program if they if we find any imbalances
- 42:51mobility limitations if there's some
- 42:53tweaky things or an old injury that acts
- 42:56up things like that we try and make
- 42:58sure that we're taking care of that stuff
- 43:00and then they go through a ten week
- 43:03pre-academy program which is designed to
- 43:07make sure that
- 43:09they are fit enough to make it through
- 43:11the academy so we have a fitness test
- 43:15that we put them through in at the
- 43:17start of the program and then we retest
- 43:19them at the end of the program and
- 43:23it's kind of a broad test across multiple
- 43:25domains but we make sure that we're trying
- 43:27to make them as well-rounded and prepared
- 43:29for
- 43:30what they will need to be successful in
- 43:32the academy as possible.
- 43:34There's a lot of injury prevention things
- 43:37sprinkled in there.
- 43:38There's a lot of corrective exercise stuff
- 43:42and a lot of recovery work.
- 43:45Part of our job is to make sure
- 43:47that they're not only really fit,
- 43:49but making sure they're not getting
- 43:51injured,
- 43:51making sure they know how to take care
- 43:53of injuries.
- 43:53If things pop up,
- 43:56make sure they know how to recover
- 43:58appropriately from
- 44:00their training that they're doing.
- 44:02And then, so they,
- 44:04that program is delivered remotely because
- 44:06they're kind of all over the place at
- 44:07that point.
- 44:08They're not in the academy yet.
- 44:10They can message us.
- 44:11They can send us videos.
- 44:12We send them feedback.
- 44:13We've got like a group chat with them
- 44:15and, you know,
- 44:16we're all talking to each other.
- 44:17So it's really fun.
- 44:18They're in that now.
- 44:19They just,
- 44:20they're about halfway through now.
- 44:22And then we'll go back down in late
- 44:28November.
- 44:29before the Academy starts.
- 44:30The Academy starts in December first.
- 44:34And we'll work with their training cadre,
- 44:36the guys who are going to be running
- 44:38the Academy.
- 44:40And we'll do a couple days down there
- 44:43with them,
- 44:44teaching them how to run our fitness
- 44:46program through the academy.
- 44:48So then we'll have our fitness program
- 44:50articulate with their fire academy.
- 44:53So they'll come in every day of the
- 44:54academy and they do their physical fitness
- 44:57first thing in the morning.
- 44:59And then they go on with their fire
- 45:00evolutions and all their training for the
- 45:02day.
- 45:02And like I said,
- 45:04a lot of the problems that they're seeing
- 45:06is that either guys aren't fit enough to
- 45:09make it through.
- 45:10or they get hurt early on and they
- 45:12have to,
- 45:13they wash out because they can't complete
- 45:15it.
- 45:17We've heard of a lot of cases of
- 45:18rhabdo or things like that.
- 45:20And so that's really what we're trying to
- 45:23mitigate is make sure they're fit enough
- 45:25when they walk into the academy,
- 45:26make sure they don't get hurt in the
- 45:28academy and they make it through to be
- 45:32a successful firefighter.
- 45:35So this is really about pre-firefighting,
- 45:37not about those who make it through and
- 45:39keeping them fit while they're on the job.
- 45:42Or is there a hope that that translates
- 45:45forward?
- 45:46Yeah,
- 45:46we have an ongoing program that is usually
- 45:51like with we don't have it.
- 45:52We're not working with Pasadena yet with
- 45:54that one.
- 45:56Right now they're focused on their
- 45:57academy.
- 45:58But with Santa Cruz Fire,
- 46:00we have an ongoing program that we run
- 46:02at the gym and they have access at
- 46:05the firehouse.
- 46:05So they can either come in to our
- 46:08K-II classes at the gym or they can
- 46:10access the program remotely and do it at
- 46:12the firehouse or at home or wherever they
- 46:13want.
- 46:14And that's just ongoing,
- 46:16trying to take care of their current
- 46:19firefighters.
- 46:22I was excited to talk to you about
- 46:23this because I live in the state of
- 46:28Ohio.
- 46:29I work for the state of Ohio.
- 46:31We had public safety on with us because
- 46:34on nine eleven,
- 46:34they do a first responders.
- 46:38Climb.
- 46:40Oh, yeah.
- 46:40Or they do a CrossFit workout.
- 46:43There are different options.
- 46:45But when I ask them,
- 46:47do you spend more money on gym equipment
- 46:50in the prisons or in the first responders'
- 46:52houses?
- 46:53The answer was the prisons.
- 46:56And when they tested – and this came
- 46:59right from the director of public safety –
- 47:02the fitness level of the prisoners was
- 47:05like,
- 47:05twenty points higher than the fitness
- 47:07level of the police officers trying to
- 47:10chase them.
- 47:13So, like, where are our priorities?
- 47:18Right.
- 47:18So,
- 47:19I was excited that you have a program
- 47:21and you're working with cities to at least
- 47:24get fitness into first responders' hands.
- 47:27Yeah.
- 47:28So how did it come to be?
- 47:30Did they come to you?
- 47:32Did you go to them?
- 47:33How did the relationship form?
- 47:35Yeah, we actually, um, the,
- 47:39it came to be because, uh,
- 47:44Ryan and I kept having this recurring
- 47:47conversation.
- 47:49Uh,
- 47:50Ryan is the owner of the gym and
- 47:52the physical therapy clinic.
- 47:53And I, you know,
- 47:55I'm doing my competitive athlete thing.
- 47:56I'm, you know,
- 47:58performing at a high level.
- 47:59Ryan comes with me when I go to
- 48:02compete.
- 48:02He takes care of my recovery and preps
- 48:05me for events and things like that.
- 48:07And I put a lot of effort into
- 48:09my recovery.
- 48:10I put a lot of effort into not
- 48:13just my physical recovery,
- 48:14but managing my nervous system,
- 48:16especially as I get older.
- 48:17I find that
- 48:19my nervous system gives out before my
- 48:22physical body does.
- 48:23My physical body will do anything I want
- 48:25it to.
- 48:25But my nervous system is much more
- 48:27sensitive, especially as I get older.
- 48:29And so I do a lot of things.
- 48:33I have a lot of tools in my
- 48:34toolkit.
- 48:35But I do one of those things is,
- 48:38you know, I called it a recovery flow,
- 48:41you know,
- 48:42where I kind of just did this low
- 48:43intensity flush.
- 48:44And I did it like once a week
- 48:46just to make sure that I was –
- 48:49you know, flushing stuff out,
- 48:52recovering ranges of motion,
- 48:54moving properly, activation.
- 48:56It was kind of my prehab, you know,
- 48:57injury prevention stuff I'd sprinkle in
- 48:59there.
- 49:00And we kept having these conversations
- 49:03about all of the firefighters and police
- 49:05officers that he was seeing coming into
- 49:07the clinic.
- 49:08And they're all just, they're all broken.
- 49:10They're all burnt out.
- 49:12They don't know how to manage the stress.
- 49:14They don't know how to train
- 49:16appropriately.
- 49:18If they get hurt on the job,
- 49:20they don't know how to rehab an injury
- 49:22and take care of themselves,
- 49:23but also whilst trying to stay fit for
- 49:26the job.
- 49:30we just kept getting like like why is
- 49:33this this shouldn't be like this they
- 49:34should have better resources they should
- 49:36know you know all of the things that
- 49:39i know as an athlete like our firefighters
- 49:42are occupational athletes they are
- 49:46Like,
- 49:46we should be treating them like
- 49:47professional athletes.
- 49:48They should have the resources that
- 49:50professional athletes have.
- 49:51They should, you know, like,
- 49:53they should be guided through these
- 49:54things.
- 49:55How come they don't have these resources?
- 49:56How come they don't know how to do
- 49:57this stuff?
- 49:58How come, you know, like,
- 49:59they shouldn't get to the point where
- 50:00they're broken before we see them?
- 50:03And it was just something that we kept
- 50:05circling back around, you know,
- 50:09that we were kind of just...
- 50:11This is sad.
- 50:11These are the people who give endlessly of
- 50:14themselves to take care of our
- 50:15communities.
- 50:16And it should not be this way.
- 50:18And we can fix it.
- 50:21And so then we got to that point
- 50:23where we were like, wait a minute,
- 50:25we can fix this.
- 50:27We know how to do this.
- 50:28So why don't we do that?
- 50:32And so we created a program and I
- 50:37wrote it up and we beta tested it
- 50:39at our gym.
- 50:41at the CrossFit gym and it ended up
- 50:44exploding.
- 50:46We ended up, it's now,
- 50:47I think it's about fifty percent of our
- 50:49membership is part of our K-two program.
- 50:53And it started attracting this whole new
- 50:56clientele to our gym that we
- 50:59didn't realize it was going to fit be
- 51:01a great fit for and that's kind of
- 51:03a different story but um it was so
- 51:06successful that then we um started talking
- 51:09to our firefighters that were coming into
- 51:10the clinic and we just started inviting
- 51:12them and come try it see what you
- 51:13think and uh we had a few firefighters
- 51:16that were real kind of ambassadors for us
- 51:19that were like oh this is really great
- 51:21this is what we need we need to
- 51:23get all of our guys on this um
- 51:26and it it took some time but it
- 51:28Eventually, they were really bought in.
- 51:34One thing led to another.
- 51:36The next thing we knew,
- 51:37we were working with Santa Cruz Fire.
- 51:40Then Pasadena happened because Chad
- 51:48Augustine, do you know who he is?
- 51:51The name sounds vaguely familiar.
- 51:53He's a Masters Games athlete.
- 51:55Okay.
- 51:56you're a masters games athlete, but he's,
- 51:58uh,
- 51:59I think he used to live in Santa
- 52:00Cruz.
- 52:00Ryan knew him and we knew he was
- 52:02a firefighter.
- 52:03Um, and we knew he was a CrossFitter.
- 52:06And so Ryan called him up and wanted
- 52:09to pick his brain.
- 52:10We were, you know, okay, like,
- 52:11can we just talk to you about this
- 52:13new program that we have that here's what
- 52:15we have in mind, but like,
- 52:16we wanted to talk to you.
- 52:17Tell us where your pain points are.
- 52:18Tell us what you guys need.
- 52:21Tell us if we're on the right track
- 52:23and what turned,
- 52:24what went from like a
- 52:26a kind of we want to pick your
- 52:28brain call turned into, oh, by the way,
- 52:31Chad's the chief of Pasadena Fire.
- 52:33And at the end of the call,
- 52:34he's like, great.
- 52:35When can you start?
- 52:40We basically looked at each other after
- 52:42that call and said,
- 52:43I guess we're building a program.
- 52:44Very cool.
- 52:46Yeah.
- 52:47So and it's two years with Pasadena now
- 52:51and three or four with Santa Cruz.
- 52:54And it's kind of just been slowly growing
- 52:56and iterating as we go.
- 52:58Is it still a two-person job or two-person
- 53:02business?
- 53:03Or have you had to bring other people
- 53:04in?
- 53:05No, we have our other head coach.
- 53:09It does the programming and the
- 53:12communicating with the recruits with me.
- 53:14So it's essentially three of us now.
- 53:17Okay.
- 53:18Do you see this being a valuable resource
- 53:20for even other occupations?
- 53:22Oh, yeah.
- 53:24Yeah, this has been I mean,
- 53:27any shift worker,
- 53:29any but any first responder,
- 53:32I think it's really valuable for any shift
- 53:34worker.
- 53:36Honestly, I mentioned that we.
- 53:39beta tested it at the gym and then
- 53:41it exploded.
- 53:42It's been really great for people who are
- 53:45graduating from physical therapy and not
- 53:49quite ready to jump into CrossFit classes.
- 53:51Maybe they're still have,
- 53:52they're working around some significant
- 53:53limitations or they're just really scared.
- 53:56You know, like after big injuries,
- 53:58people are really scared to move their
- 53:59bodies.
- 54:00They don't trust themselves yet.
- 54:02Or they're really,
- 54:03they've maybe they've gotten really
- 54:04deconditioned.
- 54:06And so it's a good entry point for
- 54:10people.
- 54:11And it's been great for our older
- 54:15athletes.
- 54:19Yeah,
- 54:19we've kind of found that it really fits
- 54:22anyone that's just really trying to
- 54:25focus on their foundations,
- 54:27really be injury prevention focused,
- 54:30have the option to recover when they need
- 54:33it rather than, you know,
- 54:36putting themselves through intensity at
- 54:40the wrong time.
- 54:42So here's my thought.
- 54:43You know,
- 54:44I said I work for the state of
- 54:45Ohio.
- 54:45I work in reemployment.
- 54:46So when people lose their jobs trying to
- 54:48help them find something new,
- 54:50The opioid crisis in Ohio is an epidemic.
- 54:55And it started in the construction
- 54:56industry for the most part.
- 54:58Guys would get hurt on the job.
- 55:00They don't get paid if they don't show
- 55:01up.
- 55:02So they take the opioid to get them
- 55:04back to work.
- 55:05It becomes an addiction.
- 55:06And then you're on the downward spiral.
- 55:08Yeah.
- 55:09and i'm just thinking like all these
- 55:10construction workers that are lifting a
- 55:12lot of objects all the time doing the
- 55:15the like sprint grunt work all day long
- 55:19like it just seems like that would be
- 55:21a good thing for them to kind of
- 55:24have those kind of flow state workouts to
- 55:27flush things out yeah
- 55:30Yeah, I do.
- 55:31That's a really valuable thing.
- 55:33And I don't think it takes any kind
- 55:34of, honestly,
- 55:35I don't think it takes any kind of
- 55:36special program.
- 55:37It's great.
- 55:38I think I've read a great program,
- 55:40but the recovery flow honestly came
- 55:43because it's not like the concept of
- 55:46recovery,
- 55:46a low intensity flush is anything new,
- 55:48but we were realizing that
- 55:52people come to a gym,
- 55:53they come to classes because they want to
- 55:56be coached.
- 55:57They want to, they want,
- 55:58they don't want to think about what
- 56:00they're supposed to do, how to do it.
- 56:03You know, when you say like,
- 56:05take your recovery days, you know,
- 56:07and make sure that you, you know,
- 56:09you do some recovery every now and then
- 56:11maybe you just go flush on a rower.
- 56:12They're not going to do that.
- 56:14You have to like give them the,
- 56:17the step-by-step you have to give them the
- 56:19coached experience still.
- 56:20Um,
- 56:22Yeah, I can see that.
- 56:23And I think that was kind of what
- 56:26clicked.
- 56:27That was what clicked for us,
- 56:29was you can tell people to recover,
- 56:33to take days off,
- 56:34to do something low intensity until you're
- 56:36blue in the face.
- 56:37But there's going to be a very small
- 56:39percentage of people that actually take
- 56:42the initiative to do that.
- 56:45And I think that one of the really
- 56:48big things we found for people is...
- 56:52The gym is their community.
- 56:54That's their social life.
- 56:56That's where they connect.
- 56:57And that's such an important part of the
- 57:01CrossFit experience.
- 57:02It's not just the workouts and what it's
- 57:05doing for your body.
- 57:06It's coming to see your friends and
- 57:09connect and get a...
- 57:11a break from work or family or whatever
- 57:14it is.
- 57:15And so being able to come to the
- 57:18gym and still hang out with your friends
- 57:21in the same class,
- 57:22in the same space at the same time
- 57:23that you always come and just choose a
- 57:27more appropriate option for yourself when
- 57:29you need it,
- 57:31I think made that so much more accessible
- 57:35to people.
- 57:37That's really cool.
- 57:39Because that's what you see, right?
- 57:40You see the, like, I've heard of that.
- 57:43I've heard that story a number of times
- 57:45in the construction world that, you know,
- 57:46you get on painkillers and then the next
- 57:49thing you know.
- 57:50But you hear that story a lot with
- 57:51people.
- 57:52Anyone that works a high-stress job,
- 57:55whether that's physical stress or even,
- 57:57you know, in Silicon Valley,
- 57:59we're in the tech bubble.
- 58:00So it's... Right.
- 58:02The tech companies own you.
- 58:04They drive you hard.
- 58:06And...
- 58:08The people here, they're high performers.
- 58:12Not necessarily athletically,
- 58:14but at the thing that they do,
- 58:17they're very driven.
- 58:18And they'll burn themselves up.
- 58:21And I think that... I don't know, just...
- 58:31You hear that story a lot.
- 58:32They get themselves in a hole.
- 58:33They get burnt out.
- 58:34Work is stressful.
- 58:35Family is stressful.
- 58:36You get some little tweaky thing that
- 58:39happens, a little minor injury,
- 58:40and they go,
- 58:41I can't come to the gym.
- 58:42You know,
- 58:43I can't go to the gym today.
- 58:44And then I, you know,
- 58:45it's been three days and I still can't
- 58:46go to the, you know,
- 58:47it's still not better.
- 58:48I'm not fully recovered.
- 58:50And then it's been a week and then
- 58:51it gets harder to come back to the
- 58:52gym because you kind of just got in
- 58:55that rhythm.
- 58:56And then it's been two weeks and then
- 58:58it's been a month and then it's been
- 58:59six months.
- 59:01I know that life.
- 59:02Yeah.
- 59:03I mean,
- 59:03I've had twelve back procedures and I went
- 59:06from like being there and two twice a
- 59:09day,
- 59:11seven days a week to like I couldn't
- 59:13I couldn't I couldn't even face not being
- 59:16able to be myself.
- 59:18Yeah.
- 59:19And so mentally it was really hard to
- 59:21like step my feet back into the gym
- 59:23at that point.
- 59:26And as much as they want it for
- 59:27you,
- 59:28if you don't understand that you don't
- 59:30have to be who you were,
- 59:33you just have to be better than you
- 59:34were yesterday.
- 59:35We talked about it today on my lunch
- 59:37show.
- 59:38And it's something I struggle with every
- 59:39single day.
- 59:42Yeah.
- 59:43And that's so hard.
- 59:44And so for us,
- 59:45it's about catching people before they get
- 59:48there.
- 59:50It's about making sure that people know...
- 59:53If work is stressful, life is stressful,
- 59:56you have a little tweaky thing going on,
- 59:58the answer is not don't come.
- 1:00:00The answer is come.
- 1:00:01Show up.
- 1:00:03Show up for yourself.
- 1:00:04Commit to your movement practice.
- 1:00:06And we will make sure that we give
- 1:00:08you something that you can do that's
- 1:00:10appropriate for you,
- 1:00:12that we guide you through it.
- 1:00:13We'll make sure that there are still so
- 1:00:15many things that you can do.
- 1:00:18You know,
- 1:00:19and I always just want people to know
- 1:00:21that if you show up, you know,
- 1:00:24like I will show up for you.
- 1:00:25I will be here.
- 1:00:26We will give you something that's
- 1:00:28appropriate for you.
- 1:00:29We're not going to just smash you when
- 1:00:32you're, you know,
- 1:00:33if you're hurt or you're stressed and you
- 1:00:36know that's not the right thing for you.
- 1:00:39And I think that that like for us,
- 1:00:41it's just about catching people before
- 1:00:43they go down that road.
- 1:00:45Yeah,
- 1:00:46it's really important because once even
- 1:00:48you're two steps down the road,
- 1:00:50it's really hard to turn around.
- 1:00:53Yeah.
- 1:00:54Yeah.
- 1:00:55Honestly, honest to God, I've lived it.
- 1:00:58And I struggle to this day.
- 1:01:02Yeah.
- 1:01:02To this day with it.
- 1:01:03Yeah.
- 1:01:06So I don't want to get all emotional
- 1:01:08because I'm starting to.
- 1:01:10Yeah.
- 1:01:12So I love what you're doing,
- 1:01:14and I'm glad you hung out with me
- 1:01:16tonight.
- 1:01:17It's good seeing you, as always.
- 1:01:20I always like hanging out with you at
- 1:01:21events,
- 1:01:22and it was really cool seeing you laugh
- 1:01:23and smile and joke around with all of
- 1:01:26your competitors at the each group games
- 1:01:28this year.
- 1:01:28Thanks so much.
- 1:01:29It's really great to talk to you.
- 1:01:31Always good to see you.
- 1:01:33I love your jersey behind you,
- 1:01:34by the way.
- 1:01:35You like that?
- 1:01:36I saw that, yeah.
- 1:01:38Well,
- 1:01:38it's not in a frame yet because I'm
- 1:01:40waiting for it to be signed.
- 1:01:42Oh, that's right.
- 1:01:44Okay.
- 1:01:45So once it's signed,
- 1:01:46it'll go into a frame and hang on
- 1:01:48the wall.
- 1:01:50But I love it.
- 1:01:51And everybody's commented,
- 1:01:52is that a Will Clark jersey?
- 1:01:53Yeah.
- 1:01:55Some people have asked if it's a Caitlin
- 1:01:57Clark jersey.
- 1:01:58No.
- 1:01:59That's not even the right number.
- 1:02:00Way cooler.
