- 0:29take you until 5:00. Still to come, Brad Heinrichs
- 0:33from the Swarm Collective will join us in about 25 minutes.
- 0:36Find out the latest on that from Brad.
- 0:39But right now, let's get back to the NBA.
- 0:40Jackson Gatlin, part of the locked on network.
- 0:42Locked on NBA he joins us Jackson Trenton Kent, thanks for
- 0:48coming on lot of ground other than just what we're witnessing
- 0:50now. And it seems like the inevitable
- 0:53is about to happen. The Thunder are going to be
- 0:55crowned. We stranger things have
- 0:57happened. It's sports after all.
- 0:58But boy, Bibi think it'd be a monumental upset at this point
- 1:01considering Halliburton's far from 100% and he has to be.
- 1:06And the way that Williams is coming on, is it a foregone
- 1:09conclusion? Jackson, is this series over?
- 1:13I'm going to say I'm going to say I don't think it's over just
- 1:16yet because look, this Pacers team was written off repeatedly
- 1:21against other team. You know, they were written off
- 1:23when they faced the Cavs. They were written off against
- 1:26the Knicks. You know, they they came in as
- 1:29underdogs and they have surprised time and time again.
- 1:32This Pacers team literally just doesn't quit now.
- 1:35I fully agree, right? Tyrese Halliburton, the injury
- 1:37not great. He needs to be significantly
- 1:40better and I think he needed to be better even even pre injury,
- 1:45right, or reaggravating it or whatever.
- 1:47But I'm not ready to write this Pacers team off right.
- 1:50This is this Pacers team play some of the best brand of
- 1:53overall team basketball that we've seen since like the
- 1:56beautiful game Spurs or, you know, going going back even
- 2:00further, like the the O 4 Pistons.
- 2:02Rightly, they don't. I'm not going to go so far as to
- 2:05say they don't need Halliburton to be their star.
- 2:07They do. They need that production from
- 2:08somewhere, but they're also not, you know, a heliocentric
- 2:12offense. It's going to completely crater
- 2:14if Halliburton only give you, you know, 15 and seven, which
- 2:17he's more than capable of doing even when he's not 100%.
- 2:20What a go to the star of last night and that is court Jalen
- 2:23Williams. What he did in the 40 point
- 2:25performance now, it's not out of nowhere.
- 2:27He was a first round pick, right?
- 2:29This is a guy that anticipated he was going to be a good
- 2:31player. He was the 12th pick overall,
- 2:33ended up at Sienna Clara. What was it about him?
- 2:36What, what is it about him that a people in NBA circles coming
- 2:40from Santa Clara and short of Steve Nash, not exactly a hotbed
- 2:44for NBA talent, what made people believe right away that he was
- 2:47going to be an impact player and, and what he's developed now
- 2:50here in year #3? You know, I think with with J
- 2:53Dub, you know, First off, testament to the Thunder and
- 2:57their developmental staff, like the Thunder have done such a
- 3:00great job finding talent and then developing it.
- 3:04And that, you know, credit to Mark Dagnall, his coaching
- 3:06staff, everything they've got going on there.
- 3:08They're one of the few NBA associations that has their,
- 3:12like their G League department housed in the same building,
- 3:16which I think is a really, you know, beneficial thing from a,
- 3:18from a development standpoint, being able to spend, you know,
- 3:21guys down to the G League. And then they're not really,
- 3:23you're not having to travel all over country and catch different
- 3:25flights. Like you're literally just in
- 3:26the exact same building, the exact same training facilities,
- 3:30all that stuff. So I'm sure that has a level of
- 3:32cohesion that that helps from their developmental staff.
- 3:36But yeah, I mean, look, JW has come on incredibly strong in
- 3:39just three short years here, you know, making himself his first
- 3:43All Star appearance this year. Needs everything that you want,
- 3:46everything that you need in a costar next to Shay, Gilders,
- 3:50Alexander, right? This is a tough role for some
- 3:52players to fill because some guys are incredibly comfortable
- 3:55with the basketball on their hands and they're running the
- 3:56show and it's great. And then you try to put them in
- 3:58an all full role and they. Struggle or vice versa.
- 4:01Right there they can thrive in an all full role, but then the
- 4:03moment the pressure gets turned up you you ask them to create or
- 4:06run some offense and they can't really do that either.
- 4:09J Dub has this effortless ability to be able to step into
- 4:12whichever role the Thunder needs him to be on any given, not
- 4:15just, you know, game to game, but any given possession, right.
- 4:18So if SGA needs to take a possession off, he comes off to
- 4:20the side. And then Jay does run on the
- 4:22offense. And yeah, that that that
- 4:24explosion that he had in last night's game with something
- 4:27else. The The Pacers defense really
- 4:28just didn't have an answer for him all night long.
- 4:31Bennett Matheran, obviously, they need more.
- 4:33You go back to Game 4 missing those free throws late in the
- 4:36basketball game yesterday, he just couldn't hit the broad
- 4:38swimming 2 for 11. He's got to be better than that.
- 4:41Yeah, you've got some, you know, some key rebounds at some point
- 4:44and if it if Halliburton and and he is injured, but if he's if
- 4:48he's nowhere near and you can't count on him, as you mentioned,
- 4:51it's going to be other guys on that roster like a Mathurin that
- 4:54has to step up. I think he can count on
- 4:56McConnell. He's seemingly there night in
- 4:58and night out. Toppins got to hit the three
- 5:00ball with a kill. Nemhart not to turn the ball
- 5:03over in the fourth quarter. God, he was awful.
- 5:06So it's it's going to have to be a collaborative effort for this
- 5:09team, if indeed Halliburton can't carry them, fair to say.
- 5:13No, absolutely. And the way the problem is even,
- 5:16you know, however, it even had some opportunities.
- 5:18You know, some shots that he got some threes, some wide open look
- 5:21just generated off the general kind of pace and tempo and flow
- 5:24of that of that Pacers offense. And he couldn't even hit those
- 5:27like that. The open ones.
- 5:28Those are the back breaking ones where you're just like, OK,
- 5:30you're not you're not having to be Lou Dort or Cason Wallace off
- 5:34the dribble or or get Chet home ground on a switch.
- 5:36And then, you know, dance on him and create that little bit of
- 5:39separation with his ridiculously long outstretched like go go
- 5:42gadget arms to be able to to get a shot off.
- 5:44You got to at least be able to hit the open ones you get.
- 5:47And yeah, Benedict Matheran is a guy that, you know, for me, I
- 5:50was really disappointed in this play because to me he's he's one
- 5:53of the guys. Hammond and and Pascal Theakrim
- 5:55are the two best players on that Pacers team about just getting
- 5:58downhill and forcing the issue. And I don't think he was nearly
- 6:01aggressive enough and trying to kind of, you know, draw fouls,
- 6:04get to the free throw line. Maybe, you know, you know, the
- 6:07Pacers identity isn't necessarily slow the game down,
- 6:09but you know, once you're operating in that half court,
- 6:11right, just getting, you know, throwing your body into a guy,
- 6:13forcing the issue, making the refs blow the whistle and
- 6:16getting those opportunities, those easy points at the free
- 6:19throw line is so important. And to your point about Nemhard,
- 6:22the the the turnovers, man, like there was there was one play
- 6:25where, you know, Nemhard got downhill and, and the the
- 6:28Thunder defense is so strange in the way that sometimes some of
- 6:33the stuff that they do is so unconventional.
- 6:35Like he had a wide open pass to Myles Turner, who was like under
- 6:39the rim. But because the Thunder
- 6:41defenders are so suffocating and they're so in your face, it it's
- 6:44almost like it's almost impossible to make the right
- 6:47like read to the next man. So then Nemhard went to go make
- 6:50like the the the safety valve pass out to the three-point line
- 6:54and SGA like knew that's exactly where the pass was going to be
- 6:57and just shot the gap and got the easy turnover.
- 7:00So, you know, this Thunder defense is just something else.
- 7:03And it's not that the Pacers can't handle it, but they have
- 7:06been in that game, five in particular, they certainly got
- 7:09speed up by the Thunder defense and they were making a lot of
- 7:11mistakes they probably really shouldn't have been making at
- 7:14the end of the day. Had any?
- 7:15Thought watching Chet Holgren getting banged around at times.
- 7:19He's never going to be a big guy, that's just his.
- 7:22His body type is not going to be that way.
- 7:25How much more upside is there, though, in Chet Holgren?
- 7:27I mean, how much better of a player could he be?
- 7:30He averaged 15-A game, maybe gets up to 1820 game, something
- 7:33like that. But is he ever going to be a guy
- 7:35that's considered, you know, one of the best 12 players on the
- 7:38planet, something like that. What do you see going forward
- 7:41for Holgren? I think it's tough because he's
- 7:45never going to be expected to be, you know, an offensive go
- 7:49getter. Like you're never really going
- 7:50to put the ball in Chet's hand and say, hey, go generate us
- 7:53some offense, right? He's great attacking off the
- 7:55catch. He's great catching, you know,
- 7:57catching and shooting from the perimeter.
- 7:59But he doesn't really have a post up game.
- 8:01He's never really probably going to have a post up game.
- 8:03And that's not to say that he couldn't maybe develop one, but
- 8:07in the confines of what this Thunder team is, I think a
- 8:10really good analogy here to maybe use is he's going to be
- 8:13the Klay Thompson of this Thunder team.
- 8:15Like he's going to be the guy where everybody's going to
- 8:18wonder, oh man, how good he could he be if he went and got
- 8:21his own team one day, right? Like he wanted to go to so and
- 8:24so team and just be the number one option, get all the shots
- 8:27and run the show and do this. Like, how good could he be?
- 8:29He's going to be a year in, year out, you know, DPOY candidate,
- 8:32like every single year there's going to be a chance for him to
- 8:34be in the DPOY conversation. And then all offensively, right?
- 8:38He's a knockdown 3 point shooter.
- 8:39He's a solid play finisher. He's an underrated passer, I
- 8:43think. So there's a lot to like there.
- 8:45But at the end of the day, you know, the the thunders first and
- 8:48second options are always going to be at least for now, right?
- 8:50They're going to be SGA and J Dub.
- 8:52So it's not it's I think it's a little bit more so that Chet is
- 8:55going to have his moment. He's going to have his games
- 8:56where he completely pops off and looks awesome, dominant
- 8:59rebounding performances, lights out shooting performances.
- 9:02But I don't think he's ever going to be the guy that's
- 9:03really given enough runway to then be like, Oh yeah, he's
- 9:06clearly a top, you know, 15, top 12 guy in the NBA.
- 9:10Does this feel like the beginning of something with this
- 9:12team? Does this feel like the
- 9:13beginning of maybe not win it 3 consecutive years, but get there
- 9:17and win a couple of them? I mean, we've thought that
- 9:20before and that hasn't been the case.
- 9:21We've seen really good teams and been we haven't seen any of one
- 9:23of those dynasty runs for for some time now.
- 9:27But with the way this roster is constructed, all the first round
- 9:30picks that they have this draft that I don't think they'll use
- 9:33them all, but they could. Does this feel like we're on the
- 9:36cusp of, you know, one of these? I don't know.
- 9:39I don't want to use the D word. They haven't won 1 yet, but you
- 9:42get where I'm going. Well, to be fair, they're one
- 9:45game away from. But I think we're pretty.
- 9:47I think we're pretty close. Guys be able to say it or at
- 9:50least say the start of a dynasty.
- 9:52Yeah. I mean, how could you not look
- 9:54at this team, right? You know, they were dominant in
- 9:56the regular season, the best team in the NBA, a historic
- 9:59defense. They've got the MVP who is
- 10:02likely about to sweep the MVP awards, which is kind of
- 10:06ridiculous, right? Wins the regular season, then
- 10:08wins the Western Conference MVP and it's likely to win Finals
- 10:11MVP here, you know, if they close this thing out.
- 10:14So. You know what's not to like
- 10:16about this funded team and thinking about their future
- 10:19together as as long as they're able to keep SGAJ, Dub and Chet
- 10:23together with the just absolute treasure trove of assets that
- 10:28Sam Presti has acquired over time.
- 10:31Like it's just about keeping the ancillary pieces along those,
- 10:34you know, alongside those guys. And as we've already
- 10:36established, right, the Thunder have done a remarkable job with
- 10:40their development staff, with their training staff, bringing
- 10:43in young guys and finding ways for them to be effective.
- 10:46Like you look at the role that Cason Wallace is playing as an
- 10:49incredible young player in his first NBA final.
- 10:51I mean, this whole Thunder team is incredibly young and you look
- 10:54at how mature they are, how how they've handled themselves, how
- 10:57they've responded to adversity. They don't get, they don't get
- 11:00shaken very easily right there. Their reactions after losing
- 11:04game one of the NBA Finals on their own court, they were so
- 11:07lackadaisical about it. There's like, yeah, yeah,
- 11:09whatever. Like we'll come back and we'll
- 11:10we'll clean it up. It's just like, it was like a
- 11:11regular season game in like the middle of January.
- 11:13And they're just like, yeah, we'll get back on track.
- 11:15Like that's just the mentality that this Thunder team has.
- 11:18So I don't see how you don't look at this as the beginning,
- 11:21you know, as the potential budding of a of a dynasty at
- 11:24this point. Jackson, you cover the Rockets
- 11:27on a day-to-day basis over at Locked on Rockets along with
- 11:30what you were to do with Locked on NBA and the podcast there.
- 11:33Kevin Durant, rumored to go there, he was rumored.
- 11:36Minnesota, he said. No, no, no, no.
- 11:37Was. That taxes and weather, is that
- 11:39what? I would guess weather, board,
- 11:41What? What can you tell us though?
- 11:42It's going to be a big offseason topic.
- 11:44He's 36. The dude can still score.
- 11:47Kevin Durant. Is the juice worth the squeeze?
- 11:51I think it absolutely is. I think that you look at, I
- 11:53don't know if you guys are baseball guys at all and then
- 11:55we're not going to get into I don't want.
- 11:57To it. Could be could be scary
- 12:00conversation in these parts talking about the Astros.
- 12:02But I've like, I've likened this potential trade.
- 12:05It's kind of like the Astros going after Verlander, right?
- 12:07Like, I mean, Verlander was a little older, but he was the
- 12:10piece that really put them over the top, right, helped him
- 12:12secure the World Series. And so I think KD, you look at
- 12:15this Rockets team, right? And they're in a position and
- 12:17they're, they're in this, you know, a little bit of a
- 12:18stalemate bidding war with a few other teams.
- 12:21Spurs, the Heat, the Timberwolves are trying to get
- 12:23in the mix. But Katie, like you guys already
- 12:26said it, right? No, no, no, don't wanna go
- 12:27there. Maybe the Wolves wind up being,
- 12:29you know, the 2020 version of the Toronto Raptors, you know?
- 12:32But. The idea of being able to add
- 12:34Katie, who is very clearly still a top ten talent even at 36
- 12:38years of age, he'll be 37 next year.
- 12:40His game is one that should age pretty beautifully, pretty
- 12:43gracefully. You know, he's a, he's a knock
- 12:45down 3 point shooter scored from anywhere on the floor.
- 12:48And for me, the argument that I pretty consistently made with
- 12:51this rocket team, there are a lot of rocket fans that really
- 12:54don't want to see them go after Katie.
- 12:55They're like, no, we're a young team.
- 12:56There's a lot of upside talent. Give them give them more time to
- 12:59grow and gel and and get better. But my argument is simply, well,
- 13:03depending on what the cost is, it's all it's all depending on
- 13:05what the cost is. But if if you're looking at a
- 13:07trade where it's, you know, Jalen Green and Dylan Brooks and
- 13:10like one or two picks or Dylan Brooks and Jabari Smith junior
- 13:13and from salary filler and one or two picks, either of those
- 13:16options are just flat out no brainers to me.
- 13:18Because the biggest weakness for this Rocket team this season,
- 13:20with their inability at times to literally just put the ball in
- 13:23the bucket, they were a top five defense.
- 13:26They have this young, exciting, talented core players who are
- 13:30nowhere near reaching their eventual potential.
- 13:33And so I look at it like, you could have Katie as kind of a
- 13:36stopgap. Let him be your best player.
- 13:38Let him be your closer. Let him be your go to guy for
- 13:40the next, you know, year or two while Alperin Shingoon and Amin
- 13:44Thompson mature. And then they start to hit their
- 13:47stride and reach their prime as to who they're actually going to
- 13:50be at the best of their abilities at the NBA level.
- 13:52And I mean, Amin Thompson projects to be a future kind of
- 13:55superstar at this stage, and he's only done with the Year 2.
- 13:58So I think it's a no brainer for the Rockets.
- 14:00And I think that they should, you know, put forth whatever
- 14:04they need to be able to secure KD as long as it doesn't
- 14:06disrupt, as long as they're not giving up too much of the
- 14:08rotation that netted them 52 wins and their first trip to the
- 14:12playoffs since the James Harden era.
- 14:14Get you out of here on this. Do we get a game seven in the
- 14:16NBA? I'm calling it we did a Game 7
- 14:20and. I hope you're right.
- 14:21Six, we're getting a game seven in OK C.
- 14:24Good stuff, Jackson Gatlin locked on NBA.
- 14:27Appreciate it as always. Thanks for what you did for us
- 14:29this playoff run, Jackson. We'll talk to you down the road.
- 14:32Thank you man. Thanks guys, always a pleasure.
- 14:34Yeah, good to talk to Jackson Gatlin as we take a look at the
- 14:37at the NBA. I don't think we do.
- 14:42You don't. What's the point spread?
- 14:44Is it like 5-6? Yeah, right.
- 14:46In that range. Let me see if I got the number
- 14:49here 4 1/2. Is it only four and a half?
- 14:53That's I think you're, I think you're too deep on Halliburton's
- 14:58injury. It's back in Indiana.
- 15:01We know role players play so much differently.
- 15:04Matheran's been awful these last two.
- 15:06He has, but you think he's just going to be awful every time
- 15:10going forward. I don't the way they clamp down
- 15:13on him. I mean they've got his number.
- 15:14This defense is AI mean the Thunders defense is everybody
- 15:18knows is elite, yes, but it's different.
- 15:20Indiana. And that's why I keep coming
- 15:22back. You know, when I look at a
- 15:23trend, I look at Florida's a better team than Edmonton.
- 15:25Yes, Oklahoma City's a better team than Indiana.
- 15:29And it's going to prove out. But Game 6 is in Florida in the
- 15:32NHL. Yeah, Game 6 is in Indiana in
- 15:35the NBA. That's.
- 15:36They'll be, they'll be bananas. There's no doubt about that.
- 15:39No doubt. Go back to Friday night.
- 15:42Yep, those last four minutes. Just.
- 15:45Awful were they scoreboard watching did do you think I
- 15:48don't that was something that it's almost like a prevent
- 15:51defense it it felt that way right for the first time.
- 15:54It felt like maybe all series they started looking up at that
- 15:57scoreboard 1 Trent and we're going to be up three one in this
- 16:01series. What there was too much as
- 16:03probable as that seemed like to everybody, and it wasn't that
- 16:07they were literally. But anybody that's played
- 16:09basketball, you know, you see that clock and you know what the
- 16:13score and you start playing that way, that's what happens.
- 16:17What? What's the series price now?
- 16:21Is it N? Is it north of eight?
- 16:24Oh, it's I bet it is. I bet it is north of Nine.
- 16:27Probably. Let's see series prices.
- 16:30Here we go. This is from our friends at
- 16:31Circus Sports. You could get the Oklahoma City
- 16:35Thunder Lane 1450. Lane that much?
- 16:39Yeah, are the Pacers at 9:00 to 1:00?
- 16:43No. You like a price?
- 16:46I do. Not that price.
- 16:48What? What?
- 16:48OK, so let's since we're price shopping, what about Jalen
- 16:52Williams to win the MVP? Gatlin thinks it's SGA.
- 16:55And if SGA is an overwhelming favorite, yes.
- 16:58If Williams, if it does go, what does it have to go?
- 17:02Does it had they have to they have to win it, don't you think
- 17:05on in Game 6 or is it better for him?
- 17:09To get out. Of a good game in Game 6 but
- 17:11come up on the losing end and then a Game 7 where he goes off
- 17:15for another 40 burger. And if So, what would his price
- 17:17be? It would have to be SGA played
- 17:19terribly. Like when you say that 26 for
- 17:22him, well, 20. Four another What was the game
- 17:24that he was like? 20 it was shot like 40.
- 17:26Percent from the field, another one of those kind of clunkers.
- 17:28He had 24 points, I think of that game, a game like that, he
- 17:32goes off and it's not his fault that they lose, then comes back
- 17:36in Game 7 and does it again, right, and you get plus 750.
- 17:40That's all it is, huh? Not enough, Not enough.
- 17:44All right. Brad Heinrich from the Swarm
- 17:47Collective. He joins us next.
- 17:49I look forward to this conversation with Brad.
- 17:51Miller and Condren are on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 18:04I'm Hillary Condon coming up on 1:30 on a Tuesday, top of the
- 18:08hour. We turn things over the drive.
- 18:10Heather and Lucas take you until 5 overtime Iowa 5 until 6 O
- 18:14clock. Well, last week we had Brent
- 18:16Bloom from the We Will collective.
- 18:18Let's get Brad Heinrich in here, Hawkeye swarm as we get the
- 18:22latest on the lay of the land. What lies ahead for Brad and his
- 18:25work at the swarm. Brad Trenton Kent, thanks for
- 18:28coming on. Appreciate it.
- 18:29Obviously some, I don't know if you want to call it Topsy Turby,
- 18:34there's a, there's a lot of questions still need to be
- 18:37answered, but I guess we, when it comes to your role, we're
- 18:41going to go straight to the source.
- 18:42So how are you guys going to handle business going forward?
- 18:47We know you've been instrumental in raising money and forming
- 18:49partnerships like with the Swarm Ale.
- 18:52That's been a success. What?
- 18:54So what lies ahead for you? Brad, thanks for coming on.
- 19:01Oh, we lose them. Are you there?
- 19:04Think babe got a funky? No, we cannot hear.
- 19:08That's a little better. Try again.
- 19:10You go ahead. We cannot.
- 19:13We'll try we're. Going to, if you can hear us,
- 19:15we're hanging up, Brad. We're going to try you back and
- 19:17see if we can get you. Here we are 2025.
- 19:20We still have the same problem as we've had for 25 years when
- 19:24cell phones first came into existence.
- 19:27Certainly very handy, but man, oh, man, they're frustrating
- 19:30yourself. So we'll get Brad Heinrich in
- 19:31here, a number of issues that need a little bit of clarity on,
- 19:35and he'll go. We're going to go straight to
- 19:36the straight to the source to get those answers when it comes
- 19:40to him. All right, Brad is back.
- 19:43He's searching in his location for a spot that we can get a
- 19:47better signal. We'll have him momentarily
- 19:49Speaking of momentarily transplays the day.
- 19:52We'll do that before we get out of here.
- 19:54Those coming up at about, oh, 10 minutes or so before before
- 19:592:00. Still working on Brad.
- 20:04Let's get to him. No, Brad.
- 20:07Oh, landline, that's better. He's got one.
- 20:09He's still got one. Do you?
- 20:11You know we do, but we don't turn.
- 20:13Well, the only reason I do is it's free long distance to
- 20:16Canada. OK yeah my cell service has cost
- 20:18me money. Ohh.
- 20:19Interesting. So in order to do that, that
- 20:21makes sense. Yeah, I want to talk home.
- 20:23I, you know, got to, it's a landline, it's not free, I guess
- 20:265 bucks a month. Anyways, Brad Heinrich,
- 20:28momentarily, we will talk to him on the Swarm as Beth Getz still
- 20:33seemingly is cooperative. Certainly she was more so than
- 20:36Gary Barda to say the very least.
- 20:38Let's get Brad back in here. Brad asked you, you know, what's
- 20:41your role going forward now that seemingly the landscape has
- 20:44changed a little bit? Thanks for coming on, Brad.
- 20:47How do you see things going forward?
- 20:49Is it still business as usual at the Hawkeye Swarm?
- 20:53Yeah, business as usual right now.
- 20:56I think there are still more questions than we have answers
- 20:59at this point. I think they just came out with
- 21:03some QS and as I think maybe even yesterday.
- 21:07But I don't think that we're really going to know what the
- 21:10new world looks like for weeks if not months from now.
- 21:15As you know, there's any, anybody that we signed to a deal
- 21:19now has to, has to be cleared through this clearinghouse where
- 21:25where somebody, a third party tells us whether a a student
- 21:31athletes deal is legit or not, or whether or not their their
- 21:35market value is, is appropriate in the contract or not, Which
- 21:38just feels like a, a lawsuit waiting to happen.
- 21:43But but yeah, we're, we're telling our members that it's,
- 21:46it's business as usual until, until the rules become a lot
- 21:51more clear and, and, and crystallize for everybody.
- 21:56So the university now will have their twenty and a half million
- 22:00dollars that they will disperse 2 student athletes that is
- 22:03separate than what you guys are. But we look past that 20 and a
- 22:07half million dollars and we hear Texas Tech maybe a $55 million
- 22:12payroll for their athletic department this year.
- 22:15Is there a number that Iowa Swarm needs to get to that you
- 22:19guys are looking at that to keep you guys competitive in the Big
- 22:2210 and nationally? Is there a number now going
- 22:25forward knowing they got their 20 1/2 that they're going to be
- 22:28spending that you guys need to hit?
- 22:31We haven't gotten any specific direction.
- 22:34Hey Swarm, you need to come up with X $1,000,000 to help Polish
- 22:38this off. So you know that now those those
- 22:42conversations may be happening in the future.
- 22:44I do know though, that at least if the, if the, if the other
- 22:50collective owners are, are being truthful, we're going to have at
- 22:55least four teams on our schedule this fall that have $30 million
- 22:59payrolls for football. And, and that's just incredible
- 23:05to think about. So and we and we will not, I'll
- 23:09just go ahead and say that we're not going to have $30 million
- 23:12tied up in football this fall. But, and I can't imagine Iowa
- 23:16State will either. But but the landscape, you're
- 23:19right, the landscape has changed.
- 23:21It's a very, I would still consider it to be mostly cloudy
- 23:25situation. Obviously the house settlement
- 23:28passing is, is is certainly least a step towards some
- 23:32clarity and maybe, you know, might might help, you know, give
- 23:39us a path towards some answers, but we don't have all the
- 23:41answers yet. And so we're still, I, I talked
- 23:44to Beth Getz just yesterday and, and you know, and she was
- 23:49apprehensive to give a whole lot of directions because she's
- 23:51still trying to, to, to get guidance from, from the Big 10
- 23:55and from the NCAA. And so I think we're in the same
- 23:58boat as as probably Iowa State and and many of the other
- 24:01collectives across the country still trying to wait to get some
- 24:04direction and, and really understand what our new world
- 24:10looks like and how we can support our student athletes
- 24:15moving forward. You mentioned your conversation
- 24:17with Beth Goetz and I remember when she was, she got the job,
- 24:21which was the absolute right hire in my opinion.
- 24:24And it seemed like she was a breath of fresh air from, you
- 24:27know, from Gary Barda and his unwillingness, unwillingness
- 24:30seemingly to work with your group and, and Beth Goetz
- 24:34embraced you and and did so publicly.
- 24:37Is she, is she still as enthusiastic about the Hawkeye
- 24:40swarm and what you guys will be able to do in conjunction with
- 24:43the House settlement? Yeah, I think Beth has been
- 24:46nothing but supportive of the swarm and, and every every
- 24:52place, every time that I that I saw her speak publicly last year
- 24:58as it pertained to student athletes and and, you know, in
- 25:03the new world, she she always was was quick to that prop up
- 25:07the swarm. And and, you know, we really
- 25:08appreciate that. And it shows that that that,
- 25:10yes, the Iowa flooding department has been, you know,
- 25:16very supportive of of what we're trying to do.
- 25:18And and yeah, your breath of fresh air is a fair a fair
- 25:23characterization. She certainly has been, you
- 25:28know, a difference maker for for Iowa athletics over the last
- 25:31couple of years. So when you look at what you
- 25:33guys did in the past, it was a lot of going out to different
- 25:35events around the community helping in that direction.
- 25:40Is that going to be much different now going forward?
- 25:42You know, those charity kind of events, going to the Children's
- 25:45Hospital, those kind of things where guys are out there in the
- 25:48community and they're getting paid for their efforts to do
- 25:50that. Or is it strictly going to have
- 25:51to be guys doing ATV commercial and he's showing up in signing
- 25:55books? Is it, are we moving more
- 25:57towards that part of it or is the charity aspect still going
- 26:00to be a big part of Iowa Swarm I?
- 26:01Hope that the charity, the charitable aspect doesn't
- 26:04completely go away. That's the first thing I'll say,
- 26:08but I think you're on to it. It it it starts it, it feels
- 26:11like that the charitable component.
- 26:14Maybe, you know, not it moving away from front and center in in
- 26:21everything that we're doing, but that's still a little cloudy as
- 26:26well at this point. So I, I'm, I'm a little
- 26:29apprehensive to say it's, it's going away or it's, it's going
- 26:33to be close to non existent. I'd like for it to continue to
- 26:36be existent because I feel like our student athletes have done a
- 26:39lot of great things for, for charities around eastern Iowa
- 26:42and, and even in the western side of Iowa and Des Moines
- 26:45area. And I know that they've had a
- 26:47lot of impact on, on, on, on kids, for example, and, and
- 26:51other homebound people and, and, and folks that really need help.
- 26:55So, so I've, it, it'll be very disappointing if that part goes
- 26:59away. But as you know, you know, the
- 27:01world's always changing and we've got to change with it.
- 27:05And, and so we'll, we'll be ready to ready to take direction
- 27:10whenever we get it. We just at this point, we're
- 27:12still a little bit in a holding pattern.
- 27:14It's you. You would think that once they
- 27:16pass that settlement, we would have a playbook, but but that
- 27:21hasn't been that hasn't been provided yet.
- 27:23So we're we're still kind of awaiting that.
- 27:26Seth Davis. Wrote a piece today and Seth
- 27:29Davis from CBS got the NCAA coverage college basketball as
- 27:33you know, he, he, he kind of put out a, you know, an all points
- 27:38bulletin to athletes that in the future that, you know, when you
- 27:42see what one of your team mates is getting paid, that there's
- 27:45pretty good likelihood that you get maybe get 10 or 20% of that
- 27:48value from from your NIL going forward.
- 27:52Do you think that's going to be the case?
- 27:54I mean, I think I think the one of the emphasis behind this was
- 27:57to get everybody running the same race, being, you know, kind
- 28:01of in the same financial ballpark and, and not having one
- 28:05school having this outlandish amount of money to throw at
- 28:07student athletes and some of the have nots not being able to keep
- 28:11up. So on the surface, that seems
- 28:13like a really good idea. What's the likelihood that
- 28:16that's the case, that that they are able to bring that that
- 28:20level of financial compensation closer together for everyone?
- 28:25Or is that just Pollyannish that there's no way in hell that's
- 28:27going to happen? I wouldn't.
- 28:29Say no way in hell, but I've come close to that.
- 28:34I, I, I'm not I, I don't, I don't have a lot of optimism in
- 28:37that regard. I mean, just just for example,
- 28:39if you know, I was reading something today, you know, we
- 28:42all read about this stuff and and and you know, the the Big
- 28:46East, I think it was it might have been St.
- 28:48John's was talking about how, you know, they're going to spend
- 28:52their twenty and a half million bucks and they're going to split
- 28:54it amongst, you know, men's and women's basketball, I think, or
- 28:57something micro pulley the. Invented vitamin water, Yeah.
- 29:01So, right, so, so they're going to, you know, the, the teams
- 29:04that don't have football, well, they're not going to drop
- 29:0715,000,000 bucks on on football. They don't have football.
- 29:10They're going to go spend it on, we're going to go spend it on
- 29:12basketball. Well, you look at Iowa or Iowa
- 29:14State that have football teams, there's absolutely no chance in,
- 29:18in the world that we're going to be able to spend 15,000,000
- 29:22bucks on or, or 20 million bucks on men's, men's and women's
- 29:27basketball. It's just, it's just not going
- 29:29to happen. And so you know, your, your,
- 29:31your idea of potentially maybe it's not your idea, but the idea
- 29:35of, of having a level playing field a la the NFL where
- 29:40everybody has the same wallet to, to spend.
- 29:44The only way that that I see that potentially happening is if
- 29:49the we we go the way of collective bargaining where the
- 29:52student athletes voluntarily agree to a certain cap on, on,
- 29:58on salaries. I mean, if you, if you look at
- 30:01that, you read the the judge's ruling, at least my read of it,
- 30:04was that she didn't necessarily say that that the, the 20 and a
- 30:14half million doesn't violate antitrust law.
- 30:18She basically says that's for somebody else to decide.
- 30:21I'm just going to opine on everything else.
- 30:23Well, if you think about this, the Supreme Court said, you
- 30:28know, you can't prevent these student athletes from making
- 30:31from making money and, and colluding to make it so that,
- 30:35that none of them can make money.
- 30:36That violates antitrust law, right?
- 30:39From my view, and again, I'm not an attorney.
- 30:42So what we, we basically said that $0.00 violates antitrust
- 30:46law, which was just imposed upon these kids.
- 30:49Now we're going to say now we're going to impose 20 and a half,
- 30:51$1,000,000, which is an obviously if it's basically an
- 30:54arbitrary type number, right? Well, how does, how does, IF0
- 30:59violates antitrust law, how does 20 1/2 not violate antitrust
- 31:03law, right? It kind of feels to me like it's
- 31:05just a bigger number doing the exact same thing.
- 31:08And, and it would not surprise me if this whole thing is
- 31:11challenged again. And, you know, unless there is
- 31:15collective bargaining, my guess is, is that the capital
- 31:19eventually go away or get to a level that nobody even pays
- 31:23attention to it because it's so high.
- 31:25I I just don't know how that doesn't violate antitrust, but
- 31:31that's, again, as an aside, yeah, they're, they're, I don't
- 31:35see any, any chance that that the schools, if you look at just
- 31:38even this last year, you know, you get schools like Creighton,
- 31:42that's in our neighborhood, right?
- 31:44How's, how's Creighton's football team?
- 31:45Yeah. Yeah, so, so, so, so they.
- 31:49So they, oh, So what does Creighton do?
- 31:51They spend all their money on basketball.
- 31:53Oh, we had a couple of we had a couple of transfers from Iowa.
- 31:56They're pretty good players. Where did they go?
- 31:59They went West of us. Yeah, right.
- 32:01They went W to you guys, they skipped right over aims and went
- 32:04over to Creighton. You know, it's not just because
- 32:07they have a lot of people coming to their games, it's because
- 32:10they have a lot, they have a they have a hell of a payroll
- 32:12over there. And and so, you know, there's a
- 32:17perfect example of how, you know, it's, it's the, the, the
- 32:22teams in the Big East will become like the Yankees when it
- 32:27comes to college basketball. And I think it'll be the Big 10
- 32:32in the SEC And certain teams in the Big 10 in the SEC will
- 32:36become, you know, be like the New York Yankees.
- 32:39It's unless they're, unless they voluntarily collectively
- 32:42bargain, I don't see any way that there's ever going to be a
- 32:47any, you know, a level playing field, so.
- 32:50To recap as we finish up with you, Brad, I was Swarm Hawkeye,
- 32:54Swarm Collective, not going anywhere, but we're in a bit of
- 32:58a holding pattern. Is that kind of a way to kind of
- 33:00tie it into a little bow here? I I would.
- 33:03Say so until I'm until I'm told otherwise, which could be
- 33:06tomorrow or anytime in the in the distant future.
- 33:10Good stuff. Well, he talked to Beth Getz
- 33:11yesterday and she didn't give you a walking paper for.
- 33:15Now. I think, Brad, thanks for coming
- 33:18on man Appreciate it. There's so much grey area out
- 33:20there. Sounds like even for you that
- 33:22are certainly closer to it than Trent and I are athletic
- 33:25department seemingly somewhat in the dark as well.
- 33:28As you said, there's no handbook been produced yet to what we can
- 33:31refer to. Brad, thanks for jumping on.
- 33:34Appreciate you doing this, man. Thank you.
- 33:36And. Thanks to all your listeners who
- 33:39support the Iowa Swarm at iowaswarm.com.
- 33:41Good stuff. Thanks, Brad.
- 33:42Appreciate it. Take care.
- 33:43Take care, Brad Heinrich. I'm no closer to knowing the
- 33:49fact that I think we were right. Last week we said bet Big E
- 33:52schools in basketball, Yes, we had that.
- 33:56Because they're going to. Have only one place to funnel
- 33:58those monies to, right? Well, it's all Washington state.
- 34:01You see what they did today? No.
- 34:02Washington state has a pretty good track and field team.
- 34:04Send a lot of people to the Olympics.
- 34:06They now have a good track team. No more field.
- 34:10Washington state track, more track and field.
- 34:14That's done. Tough decisions coming.
- 34:17Tough decisions. It's going to get worse.
- 34:19Yeah, transplays of the day. How did you do yesterday?
- 34:212:00 and 2:00. 500 day we had a big.
- 34:24Winning week last week we did, We've seen.
- 34:26It well. We'll try to.
- 34:28Stack on to that one and well, we got a first pitch right
- 34:31around the corner. I'm already on who's playing
- 34:34this afternoon? Louisville.
- 34:36Gets to Oregon. State How about our guy?
- 34:39What's his name? Gage Wood.
- 34:40Yeah, Arkansas kid, no hitter, you know, and and and all the
- 34:44meaty he did afterwards and then going over the Murray State
- 34:47dugout and consoling some of the players that a that he knew when
- 34:49talking to the guys that he just know he had seemed like a pretty
- 34:52good egg. Yes, absolutely right.
- 34:54He's been bounced around on all the shows today, has he?
- 34:56Yeah, why not? Good stuff.
- 34:58Miller and Condor back with trench plays of the day.
- 35:00Circus Sports sponsor those. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 35:04Network. All right, final couple of.
- 35:20Minutes here Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 35:23Welcome to the program. What's left of it coming up at
- 35:25the top of the hour, the drive will take over.
- 35:28Heather and Lucas will take you up until 5:00.
- 35:32Although it sounds like you're pinch hitting for the first
- 35:34segment of the program, at least that was the.
- 35:36You didn't jump to the. Forefront to that one I I saw
- 35:39you kind of I can I got a full. Time job, man.
- 35:42So do I, except I'm on a clock. Well, that's true.
- 35:47Anyways, well done helping out. So you'll stick around to begin
- 35:50with and then Heather will slide on into your chair.
- 35:53What are you betting on tonight? I got.
- 35:57Well, I said baseball. Give me Louisville.
- 35:59My 27 to 1 ticket on the Cardinal just hanging by who are
- 36:03they playing Oregon? State.
- 36:05This afternoon, no score as I've just opened things up.
- 36:08OK, baseball tonight I'm going to play the Cincinnati Reds.
- 36:11You know why? No, they're playing my crappy
- 36:14Twins. Simple as that.
- 36:15That's the handicap. There it is David Fest on the
- 36:18mound for with the Twins. So how long is is?
- 36:20Royce out for now, Lewis, I mean, how long will he be back
- 36:24for before he goes again? All right?
- 36:25And they'll reevaluate. It'll be longer than they
- 36:28initially say and it will just get well.
- 36:31I mean, he hasn't been helping much anyway.
- 36:32Yeah, that's true. That's true.
- 36:35Mets and the Braves tonight. Do you have an opinion?
- 36:37I do. I'm.
- 36:38Going to be grabbing the plus money.
- 36:40How am I getting plus money on the Mets with Peterson?
- 36:44Who's the better pitcher? Yeah, with the better team.
- 36:47Yeah, I agree. Yep, I'm confused.
- 36:49I'll grab it. Give me plus one.
- 36:51Schwalenbach was really good. At his last start, I think it
- 36:54was really. Good.
- 36:54Let's see if he can go back. To back can be the race.
- 36:57Why didn't anybody like the race right now?
- 36:59I like the race. I've been making money on the
- 37:00race. Absolutely.
- 37:01I think they're. Legit I think the second best
- 37:03team in the east lame -115. Against those crappy Orioles,
- 37:07I'll jump aboard. So I'm gonna split up and play
- 37:101/2 unit on each in hockey tonight.
- 37:12Panthers -150 and puck line -1 1/2 + 160 on that puck line, so
- 37:18an empty that goal. Yes.
- 37:20Or a six one or six one again. The Oilers will start Skinner
- 37:24again. If you get the Game, 6 is the
- 37:26Stanley Cup and you're going back and forth with your
- 37:28goaltender. It isn't that just wild and it's
- 37:32heard of. Yeah, it's unheard of.
- 37:34But but here they are. Yeah.
