- 0:00Welcome back to this podcast miniseries Wow to Old School,
- 0:03where I'm interviewing some of World of Warcraft's most
- 0:05recognized creators, asking them about their perspectives and
- 0:09their experiences on 2 of gaming's most popular MMORPGS.
- 0:13This next guest game. Knowledge is an understatement
- 0:17of what he possesses. He knows way too much about
- 0:19classic World of Warcraft. If you kept up with only Fang
- 0:22Season 2, this guy was almost World 1st 60 except World of
- 0:27Warcraft. The classic World of Warcraft
- 0:31kind of crashes sometimes and it crashed.
- 0:35So he wasn't the first to 60, but that's besides the point.
- 0:39He's also raid leaded some of the craziest accomplishments in
- 0:44all of hardcore World of Warcraft.
- 0:45He's constantly on the front lines.
- 0:47You've probably seen highlights and clips of them.
- 0:50We're talking with Ampy. This has bugged me for a while
- 1:03because I've gotten mixed answers on this.
- 1:07Ampie or ampie. Either or either or, depends
- 1:10where you're from. That's the worst.
- 1:11Answer me too. What do you get?
- 1:14Amphie. Amphie right that's.
- 1:16The European version I say. I say ampie.
- 1:19You say Ampie. OK, I'm going to say Ampie then,
- 1:21because it's from the source. All right.
- 1:23Well, Ampie, how long have you been playing World of Warcraft?
- 1:28When did you start? When did you pick it up?
- 1:31That's my whole life. Like straight up I, I started
- 1:34playing when I was like 6 years old, running around and just
- 1:37like doing nothing right. You know, the classic, you know,
- 1:39your, your parents play games, they get you into it just a
- 1:42little bit. You know, you're just kind of
- 1:44like walking around on a character.
- 1:45Did that for like pretty much all the classic like, you know,
- 1:49you, you played some classics, you know, my highest level
- 1:51character in in classic Wow was level 30, so.
- 1:56Over like how long? Like what period?
- 1:58The whole classic. Like the whole classic.
- 2:00Over a year, right? So like, you know, like 6-7 year
- 2:03old me ended up killing a couple boars along the way.
- 2:06So I've been playing since then. That was like 2000 and 5:00-ish
- 2:11probably when I started playing. My parents were in like the open
- 2:14beta or whatever, the closed beta for for wild Classics.
- 2:17So they're like pretty big into it.
- 2:19So did you take like any big breaks in between then and now
- 2:23or have you just kind of to? Be honest, not not like extended
- 2:27breaks like maybe maybe like, you know, a couple months where
- 2:31I didn't really play that much, but I've pretty much been like
- 2:34my one game has been World of Warcraft for as long as I can
- 2:38remember. It's.
- 2:38Been the the heart of your gaming, basically just your home
- 2:41base. Yeah, I was curious just because
- 2:44every MMO, yeah, got those like eras where a lot of people are
- 2:49taking breaks. You know, like old school wasn't
- 2:52really a thing for a while too right?
- 2:54Where you know, you had like Runescape and then it progressed
- 2:57and then there was this gap, this like dark age right before
- 3:00Old School Runescape came out again.
- 3:01That happened with Wow too, but it was way longer.
- 3:04It was 2005 to 2019 before anything came out.
- 3:07So what I actually did since? 2005 to 2019, right?
- 3:12Oh, because of classic. Yeah, Right.
- 3:14Right, right, right. No, no Classic yeah, I mean, TBC
- 3:18was a really good Wrath was decent, but no I I ended up
- 3:21playing private servers. So I was always playing, even
- 3:24even during the times where people are taking breaks from
- 3:26the game. I just went to private service
- 3:28and I started playing like Classic again.
- 3:29Yeah, the parallels between Wow and Runescape world just cause
- 3:33in like 2011 I think, I guess well, 2012 was when the
- 3:38evolution of combat update. I'm sure you've heard whispers
- 3:40of that I. Haven't.
- 3:42I don't. I don't know what that means.
- 3:43No, I don't know. What that means?
- 3:46I'm completely new but in the Runescape world still like I've
- 3:48I've grinded but I don't know any back story.
- 3:52All right, I'll, I'll keep it as brief as possible because if I
- 3:54don't keep it brief, I will be yapping your ear off for two
- 3:57hours straight. But essentially in 2012, like,
- 4:00you know, the combat, you know, in Runescape right now, you
- 4:02know, click running on the tick system, everything in 2012, they
- 4:09were pressured by the higher ups and and the the shareholders to
- 4:14figure out a way to modernize the game because they had just
- 4:17been completely screwed with like losing players left and
- 4:21right. They were like taking away the
- 4:23free trade. Like you literally couldn't give
- 4:25somebody else GP. Like this was pre Iron Man or
- 4:28anything. Like everybody was just playing
- 4:30it like a normal MMO and there was a ton of shady things going
- 4:36on and and trying to figure out how to moderate it all.
- 4:40So their conclusion was we need to modernize the game and create
- 4:45a whole new combat system. So they introduced a hot bar
- 4:49with abilities. They changed the way that
- 4:51special attacks work. Like, they took special attacks
- 4:53out of the game pretty much. You know, you had to start using
- 4:57your keyboard for pressing your abilities.
- 5:00It was essentially a, a, a leap to try and have somewhat of a
- 5:04Wow combat system. Yeah.
- 5:06And that made nobody happy. Like, the whole game quit,
- 5:11basically. It was the lowest of low and
- 5:14then a year later we got Old School Runescape because of.
- 5:18How it was that early? It was a year in like 2013.
- 5:22Yeah, 2013 was Old School Runescape in 2012 CFC.
- 5:26Crazy it was. I don't even think I remember.
- 5:28I don't even remember hearing about Old School Runescape until
- 5:30like like late maybe 2018 kind of like that's so far.
- 5:36Yeah, that would make. Sense what existed, I thought.
- 5:37I thought it was much closer to classic.
- 5:39Yeah, yeah, 2013. We didn't get our first, to put
- 5:43some context in it, 20, 2016 was the first time we got our first
- 5:46quest like exclusive old school quest Monkey Madness 2.
- 5:51That was the first time we ever got like actual content in like
- 5:55a, you know, like a classic plus kind of vibe of like, oh, we're
- 5:58creating our own storyline. Like they had little snips like
- 6:01agility rooftops. That was an old school thing.
- 6:03That was probably one of the first ones.
- 6:05Nightmare Zone. I don't even know if you've seen
- 6:07nightmare zone. It's pretty irrelevant nowadays,
- 6:09but. I've never seen it.
- 6:10Yeah, that was like one of our first updates, but yeah, it was
- 6:15very quick. After the whole evolution of
- 6:16combat thing, there's there's like 40 documentaries about it
- 6:20because of how crazy it was. Like you'll, you'll probably
- 6:23it's crazy. I.
- 6:24Didn't know about that at all. Yeah, it's, it's that was like
- 6:26the big update that killed it. It was, yeah, yeah, I guess to
- 6:31to kind of backtrack because like I said, I'll talk about
- 6:34this for an hour if I don't moderate myself.
- 6:37Really bad at rabbit holes. I'm so down for rabbit holes.
- 6:40Yeah, don't worry about it. So I guess to, to kind of go
- 6:44back to the World of Warcraft stuff, given the, just the
- 6:49general community, like there's, there's all this stuff recently
- 6:53of a bunch of wow guys kind of saying, you know, I'm, I'm
- 6:56taking a break from classic for now.
- 6:59There's nothing really to do anymore.
- 7:01And then there's people kind of returning for I, I, I just heard
- 7:05that the Legion remix came out. So like with all that in mind of
- 7:09what's going on, what is your general opinion of the World of
- 7:13Warcraft world right now over there?
- 7:16Just general glance, no specific, but the community,
- 7:20just the community, the state of the game.
- 7:22Like we just when you think about World of Warcraft, what's
- 7:24on your mind? I can't speak at all to the
- 7:27retail side of things. There's like, you know, like
- 7:29it's just like Runescape where there's like 2 versions of the
- 7:31game really, right. I play a classic exclusively.
- 7:34I, I haven't touched retail in, in like 5 years.
- 7:36Gotcha. So when I, when I talk from my
- 7:38perspective, that's where I'm coming from, but as a classic
- 7:41player, I, I see that people are very frustrated right now as in
- 7:48a, in a general sense, there are people that are just happy to be
- 7:51there. Of course, they're just playing
- 7:53the game, especially people who are newer to the game, like
- 7:58happy right now. But it's like starting to get to
- 8:01me the the Blizzard model where they're not really making
- 8:04content, they're just re releasing it, right?
- 8:07And, and I think the biggest thing is it's it's all time
- 8:09gated. So the newest servers,
- 8:11anniversary servers came out. Oh God, like maybe last year or
- 8:14something. It was.
- 8:15It was like a year around the time, like what didn't we like
- 8:19launch only things the same time that they came out?
- 8:21Yes, yes. It was so yeah, the end of last
- 8:24year. It's like if they released
- 8:26leagues, but they weren't like really interesting.
- 8:29Yeah. And they were time gated.
- 8:30That's that's basically like the vibe with the the server.
- 8:33It's just, I don't know, I feel kind of like at a point where
- 8:38I'm, I'm just kind of over the, the classic.
- 8:40Like I've been playing classic for so long and I've, I just am
- 8:43kind of over it. And I, and I, I know some
- 8:45people, especially people who have been rating a long time are
- 8:49like pretty frustrated because it's just like the same thing.
- 8:52There's no, there's no updates. Right.
- 8:55It's because, I mean, I, I guess the general play style, like
- 8:59once you're especially in classic, I guess it applies to
- 9:03most versions of World of Warcraft.
- 9:04But once you're at that Max level, you're essentially just
- 9:07raid logging once a week for the most part, right?
- 9:10Unless you're like making a new character.
- 9:12So I guess that would make sense of just feeling that, that
- 9:16burnout. I actually have it written down
- 9:17for the video essay I'm doing on this, of just how World of
- 9:21Warcraft's format and its structure and it's gameplay loop
- 9:25is essentially a recipe for burnout.
- 9:28Just giving people free burnout just because of the way that you
- 9:32know, the worst thing you got to, you got to play the.
- 9:34The the worst thing bro, is, is that for me, it's it's not
- 9:38burnout. It's like noticing the pattern.
- 9:41I don't know if you know this. So so so wow schedules their
- 9:45releases in a way such that you subscribe the longest Gotcha.
- 9:50That's how it's designed. So they're going to they're
- 9:52going to release one thing and drip feed you content once a
- 9:55month so you stay subscribed. And it's like little tiny things
- 9:59they'll do like a they'll do a classic wow patch and then
- 10:02they'll do an XYZ version patch and then they'll do a retail
- 10:07patch and then they'll rotate it back.
- 10:08And it's like this, like I the way I say, I don't know if this
- 10:11is, this is like weird, but like I'm tired of getting milked by
- 10:15the company, you know, like that's how it literally how it
- 10:17feels. You're just sitting, you're just
- 10:19sitting there and it's just like you're waiting for your turn to
- 10:22get an update and then it's just that little thing and you're
- 10:24like. Yeah, it definitely.
- 10:25Makes sense like it doesn't feel good as a player it especially
- 10:29when Blizzard has like all the resources tied to their main
- 10:33game. So the actual classic team I
- 10:36don't know if you know manages 2 versions of the game the the
- 10:40well three now with Sod. So they had Sod Classic and then
- 10:44like the Progressed Classic which is now in Mop, it's like a
- 10:48five person team and they're in charge of those 3 versions is.
- 10:51It really, yes, wow, I didn't know.
- 10:53So I didn't know. It's like it's just that little
- 10:55bit. Shit it's very neglected from
- 10:58the company perspective. Not the people working on it are
- 11:00trying very hard, but the actual company behind the uppers like
- 11:05working on it don't see it as a viable like game or or
- 11:09something, I don't know, not monetizing it, whatever.
- 11:12So the game is like literally I, I say this all the time, but
- 11:15it's like classic minus over time they've been like breaking
- 11:19things. My my go to example is that
- 11:21there there are boss mechanics, core boss mechanics that no
- 11:25longer work that are just that have not worked for years.
- 11:29Damn, so they how does they even have?
- 11:31Dragons. Yeah, that's what I mean.
- 11:32That's what I mean. Like like like.
- 11:34The content that is provided is broken as well.
- 11:37Damn. And because they're putting in
- 11:40like straight up old patches that weren't hot, it's because
- 11:44it's. Because they're, they're all
- 11:45working on the same client. So classic the the vanilla
- 11:49version, classic Mop and classic Saud are all on the same client
- 11:54and for whatever reason things bleed through to the other
- 11:56versions. Weird.
- 11:58So you're getting like an update.
- 12:01And I think that this is just a lack of people, right?
- 12:04Because obviously this shouldn't happen, but it's probably like,
- 12:06you know, maybe somebody's going too fast, right?
- 12:08Sloppy work, whatever, it didn't get reviewed, whatever.
- 12:11They'll release a patch and then it's like, oh, you can buy runes
- 12:15in normal Classic now. I don't know if you're familiar
- 12:17with Sod, but it's like a special ability, right?
- 12:20So you can do that. It didn't do anything, but it
- 12:21was just like weird boss mechanics start working
- 12:24differently. They'll start targeting
- 12:25different people. They never did before.
- 12:26So strats have to change slightly.
- 12:28And it's just weird. And I feel like that's the most
- 12:31we get. And it that that sucks that that
- 12:33sucks to see. That does suck.
- 12:35I I can't believe there's that little people working on I I
- 12:38expected like are are you like that's confirmed that there's
- 12:41only like 5 people working on all those things.
- 12:44Well, where's that? Just how I.
- 12:45Mean I've met, I've met the classic team.
- 12:47It's very small. Yeah, I bet.
- 12:49Yeah, it would make sense. It it seems like they've never.
- 12:51Really been 5 but like they really don't have many people.
- 12:55Yeah, I get. I get what you mean.
- 12:57Yeah, yeah, definitely. Seems like Blizzard hasn't
- 13:01really acknowledged it as something worth putting a bigger
- 13:04team on to yet, if ever. Yeah, I'm not exactly sure, but
- 13:08when when we did did like a tour of their like office at some
- 13:12point. A lot of streamers and and I
- 13:15don't know dude, there's probably like 15 to 20 people
- 13:18Max, but that's like including like managers and like not
- 13:24really like people working on it day-to-day.
- 13:26Yeah, they're obviously very understaffed.
- 13:29I guess before I we, we get into the, the old school
- 13:33conversation, I just wanted to touch on your personal
- 13:36background here, just because me and Sardaka talked very briefly
- 13:40about just like the huge challenges that you guys did
- 13:44with like hardcore and everything.
- 13:47So like, can you just give a brief background on like how you
- 13:51got into this more serious play style and like just this surge
- 13:57into like Guild slash raid leading and having all this
- 14:01knowledge and just being, you know, quote UN quote a sweat,
- 14:05you know, like just how that became like who you are as a.
- 14:09Player I started playing on private servers back back to
- 14:13that earlier conversation. I started playing on private
- 14:14servers around like 2014. I was try Harding on on private
- 14:18servers. I was raiding bro, I was raiding
- 14:214 times a week, but of course on PST you have you ever been on
- 14:25like EST schedule on PST with like a it's.
- 14:28Terrible. It's awful.
- 14:29Yeah. By.
- 14:29The way so my raid was at 4 PMI get out of school at like 3:00
- 14:35PM. So I'm like there were times
- 14:37where like I'm like running home to make my raid and it's brutal,
- 14:43but I was committed, man, I really was I was committed.
- 14:45We were ready four times a week. We were progressing nacks in
- 14:48classic wow on on private servers and it was a great.
- 14:53I loved it. And that's that's what really
- 14:54got me into classic because I was too young to really
- 14:57experience it the first time around.
- 14:58So I was playing private servers and that's what really got me
- 15:00started in in classic wow stuff. I was playing on a server called
- 15:03Warsaw in Phoenix, which was old hosted in Russia 250 paying to
- 15:10connect to it and really sketchy like some crazy rich guy would
- 15:14come in and buy characters for his entire Guild that they'd
- 15:16clear stuff and they'd all quit. Like it was just like such a it
- 15:19was such a weird landscape. Early private service, sketchy
- 15:23as shit. They still kind of are, but
- 15:24they're they're like more businesses now, I feel like.
- 15:27Yeah, I've seen all that stuff recently with like, turtle Wow.
- 15:30Turtle Wow. Yeah.
- 15:31He's like big, almost like conglomerates working on like
- 15:34multiple private servers. It's really fascinating to me,
- 15:38the whole. Anyways, yeah, so I played on
- 15:40private servers. I played on so many.
- 15:41Back then the way you played was whatever new server came out
- 15:44every time You're leveling to 60, you were doing the raids and
- 15:47then you quit and then you level to 60 and you and you do the
- 15:49raids and you quit. That was the, that was the
- 15:51cycle. It was really fun.
- 15:53Honestly the, the most fun part for me is that first rush where
- 15:56you've got like 3 weeks of non-stop content and you just,
- 16:00you don't sleep, you don't shower and it's just pure sweat.
- 16:04That's my environment dude. So that's that's where it came
- 16:06from. Just fell in love with that.
- 16:09Like that journey to Max sort of thing.
- 16:11Yeah, and, and, and on those journeys I started getting in
- 16:14touch with my speed running side.
- 16:16So I started running it faster and faster and faster and I
- 16:19started practicing it. And so my first classic like
- 16:23server like first in in classic 2019, my goal was to get server
- 16:26first, like first sixty. That was my goal.
- 16:29So that was my first like kind of thing on the 2019 servers,
- 16:34the the classic servers, I didn't end up getting it.
- 16:37I tried really hard. I ended up playing like I, I
- 16:39slept like 6 hours over the course of like 5 days.
- 16:43It was really bad. It was really, really, really
- 16:47bad, but I ended up getting like second solo character.
- 16:50So that's how I kind of started. And then once the servers were
- 16:53out, I was just rating a lot. I mean, I had like started with
- 16:57one character and then you're alone, you're in the raid log
- 17:00stage. So I'm like, oh, I'll level
- 17:01another one. Yeah.
- 17:02Then you got 2 characters you're rating on and I level a mage
- 17:05because I'm like, wait, if I'm in a level characters I got a
- 17:07level I'm quick as mages can level your alts.
- 17:10Yeah. So I leveled the mage and then I
- 17:12leveled five more characters. So I ended up having like 8 or 9
- 17:16characters that I rated on weekly by the end of Classic.
- 17:19So I was just a raid fiend. I was, I was waking up, rating
- 17:23four or five times a day, getting world buffs, going to
- 17:26sleep and rating again. That was my like cycle for like
- 17:293 months at the end of Classic Wow.
- 17:31And then at the end of Classic, someone named Cargos was like
- 17:34really hyping up hardcore Classic Wow, which back then
- 17:37wasn't a version of the game, it was an add on.
- 17:40Yeah, I remember the add on. For is right now where you you
- 17:45put the add on on and if you die it says you died and it was up
- 17:49to the community to not cheat. It was supposed to be still
- 17:51found. It was a challenge mode and I
- 17:54started that with my friend Dax. And then we we do it up.
- 17:58We died, we do it up and we, we never made it to 60.
- 18:01We, we stopped at 58. TBC came out.
- 18:03That was the first hardcore experience that I had.
- 18:06TBC stuff was really exciting. And then came out with another
- 18:09server called Season of Mastery. And that's where like the first
- 18:12challenge was for me. Cargos reached out and was like,
- 18:15we're doing this challenge. Road to Ragnaros.
- 18:19I want you to rate lead it. Yeah.
- 18:22Road to Ragnaros was of the first hardcore raid that
- 18:26happened in Wow, I think. I don't know what year it was,
- 18:28but that, you know, middle of TBC song comes out.
- 18:31We didn't know until it came out like the week or two or four.
- 18:34They actually buffed the raids like a lot.
- 18:36So we were going into it with the idea like, yeah, we're going
- 18:39to do modern core. It's easy.
- 18:40I mean, you saw only things. It was so easy, right?
- 18:42Yeah, yeah. So they buffed it.
- 18:44They disallowed world buffs. You can't world buff from the
- 18:46raid. They buffed the boss HP by like
- 18:50100% and they added new mechanics for every boss.
- 18:53Wow. So that was Som and not a lot of
- 18:56people know about Som. That was their first take on
- 18:58like updated classic Rays and a lot of people don't even know
- 19:01they didn't play it. Yeah, I think I've only heard
- 19:03whispers of of. Yeah, it's Mastery 1.
- 19:07Yeah it it wasn't big at all. I think the timing was too
- 19:10quick. They released classic and then
- 19:12TBC was was like 3 months in when they started Som Yeah.
- 19:16It's like they people just finished their classic like no
- 19:19life runs and they release it again.
- 19:21We did some hardcore. It took us 2 1/2 months to clear
- 19:26it. We we, we full cleared it.
- 19:28Only ever 2 deaths in MC. And then I was told that that
- 19:32was almost like a, a proof of concept for hardcore.
- 19:36Like maybe hardcore servers could be a thing.
- 19:38And then so that was my hardcore challenge stuff.
- 19:40I ended up playing something called Hardcore All Stars as
- 19:42well later. On So you said a ton of exposure
- 19:44to all this like all these hardcores that you like you're
- 19:46so used to avoiding death on World of Warcraft which is so
- 19:51crazy yeah I. Mean that's that's been like
- 19:53kind of my my go to challenge for so long.
- 19:56Yeah, to just jump ahead a little bit, is the Guild name
- 19:59Frontier? Is that the right?
- 20:01Yeah, name of it. So what can you explain what
- 20:04that is like just in general that's.
- 20:05Actually, right, right now, 2023, yeah, that's about right.
- 20:09There were whispers on the wind about a hardcore server.
- 20:13That's what that's what really sparked it.
- 20:14There was like, oh, we're doing hardcore All Stars, dude, he
- 20:16said, she said, they said maybe there's going to be a hardcore
- 20:19server one day. So we started a guilt.
- 20:21That's kind of, that's kind of how Frontier started.
- 20:23I, I, I invited a lot of people who were in the competition
- 20:26who've been around for a long time.
- 20:27I've talked to people from Road to Rag.
- 20:28I reached out to like pretty much everybody and and it was
- 20:31like this weird, like a gamer net.
- 20:33We kind of tried to get the best hardcore people, the best, like
- 20:36classic Raiders, whatever, prep them for the idea of a hardcore
- 20:39server with the goal, of course, of clearing everything world
- 20:43first. Gotcha.
- 20:44Speed run hardcore. Exactly.
- 20:46Yeah, So we did it. The the service came out, half
- 20:49of our raid roster had died and quit.
- 20:51It was it was rough, man. We were raiding six times a week
- 20:55and in the off day we were farming consumes for the next
- 20:58week. Yeah.
- 20:59So it was, it was straight up just raid raid, raid, raid.
- 21:02You're always raiding right? But we cleared everything in 49
- 21:06days from launch. Wow, faster than only things
- 21:09even entered in MC. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 21:12We were slow as shit dude. MC was so late.
- 21:15Oh yeah. But it was a lot of fun though I
- 21:17ended up dying right on the LastPass which was really sad
- 21:20but. I remember that clip.
- 21:21Actually, I I do remember that everyone bowing to you at the
- 21:24end because you kept, I remember you kept raid leading after you
- 21:28died. It's like so like that everyone
- 21:31would really. Have to.
- 21:32Yeah, you have to. Yeah, I remember seeing that be
- 21:33like, that was so cool. Like it's like, I've never seen
- 21:36that before, you know? Obviously it's like a
- 21:38devastating thing. Your character dies after all
- 21:41that time, like you're so far, and then you don't even have a
- 21:44millisecond to like, you know, be upset about it because you,
- 21:49you keep everyone else like you know.
- 21:51That's the thing when you're when you're hardcore rating,
- 21:52it's like you accept the fact that you could die.
- 21:55Yeah. You kind of got to get that out
- 21:57beforehand, I think. Absolutely.
- 22:00Do you think that where Wow is at now?
- 22:02Is there much of A future for any hardcore content that you
- 22:06see yourself diving into, or would you say that?
- 22:10I'm done with hardcore. You're done with hardcore era's.
- 22:12Done, Yeah. Yeah, but also Frontier, by the
- 22:16way, we just finished the the another Frontier challenge.
- 22:19We did it all again with no world buffs.
- 22:21That was that was our most recent challenge.
- 22:23Yeah, I I did hear about that. I think I saw a clip of it too.
- 22:25That was my that that. That's what made me quit, I
- 22:28think. Just cause of how it.
- 22:29Was just it was just grueling. Bro mind numbing that that
- 22:32journey is. Like now the the problem with
- 22:36hardcore is when you're rating in hardcore, you lose too much.
- 22:42So people quit all the time. The turnover in hardcore is so
- 22:46high that you go in like we went into this three months ago with
- 22:50a roster of 160 people and we had to bring in like bench
- 22:57people, like people who wouldn't hadn't rated for a long time.
- 23:00Like we barely had enough to finish it.
- 23:02So like 3/4 of our Guild quit over the course of three months.
- 23:08And it's just because, you know, you put in, you put in 20 days
- 23:10of your, your life slash play and not even like real time,
- 23:14right? Like you're talking like time
- 23:15invested every day. And then you DC and you die.
- 23:19You, you, you go into a dungeon, the server crashes, 5 people
- 23:24die. Just stuff happens all the time
- 23:26that isn't even in your control. Not even there are stuff that
- 23:29you die to that is in your control.
- 23:31But I think hardcore isn't sustainable without some sort of
- 23:34a little bit of protection. Like I know I know, Runescape
- 23:36has scape crystals right? I don't know how they work, I've
- 23:39never used one. Yeah, there's a few things that
- 23:42old school has that can potentially help you for sure.
- 23:45Right. There's like some barrier in
- 23:47classic. There's no barrier.
- 23:49If you DC, you're on the game for about 1 to 2 minutes.
- 23:52It depends on your. I don't know, it depends.
- 23:55I've seen people on for a long time after the DC, so even if
- 23:58you DC in like low level content, you might just die,
- 24:02cause some random mob patrols onto you and then you're in
- 24:05combat and just like you don't disconnect fast or whatever.
- 24:08It's very frustrating to play classic and invest your time in
- 24:11when there's such a high risk of of things going wrong that you
- 24:16can't really control right. And that's what that's what
- 24:19makes me not want to play. Very understandable.
- 24:22Very understandable. But there was a point where
- 24:24where like the meta is to just not play if you're doing
- 24:27anything, even if it's a minor upgrade, you shouldn't do it
- 24:29because the risk is higher than the reward.
- 24:32Yeah, and that's how I felt as soon as I hit like level 50.
- 24:35Like I was just like, dude, everything I need to do is super
- 24:37safe. And then once I hit 60 I barely
- 24:39wanted to farm pre bis because I was just like, I'm already here.
- 24:42Like I got here dude. I don't want to like throw it
- 24:44all away. So that definitely makes sense.
- 24:47So wait, so that's what I found is that hardcore at its core
- 24:52creates for a lot of people a mental state that, like, you'd
- 24:57rather not play. It breeds not playing the game.
- 25:01And that's terrible for a game that's not good.
- 25:03Yeah, you don't want to not play.
- 25:04Yeah, that's why I'm done. I'm done playing hardcore,
- 25:06unless it's like some event for fun, I'm not going to do any
- 25:09more challenges on hardcore. Wow, that would make sense.
- 25:11Man. That's a lot.
- 25:13That's a long journey of of stressful staying alive and
- 25:18redoing it and going again. It's terrible, Yeah.
- 25:21Especially leading it is the worst because people you have to
- 25:25like be the person who who they talk to when they're quitting,
- 25:29right. So you're constantly seeing your
- 25:30friends quit the game. Yeah, it just like takes your
- 25:33day. You're like you, you finish
- 25:34rating in hardcore and you're just like just log off and like
- 25:37melt. Yeah, Given all that, given your
- 25:40history of turning into this gamers, absolute gamer, I think
- 25:43it was probably around like somewhere in July, maybe August,
- 25:47I don't remember. You started playing Old School
- 25:50Runescape alongside a lot of other Wow players that found
- 25:54their way over here. But you personally, what was
- 25:58your initial reason? You know, aside from seeing
- 26:01other Wow guys try it, when you looked in the direction of old
- 26:05school seeing these guys try it, what was it that made you want
- 26:09to create your account and login?
- 26:11I think the fact that they had been playing for like, like I
- 26:14didn't start until people were kind of deep in Runescape.
- 26:18I was like, you know, Stardock was on like day 40, Joker day
- 26:2220, you know, stuff like this and, and, and seeing them
- 26:25committing to it for like multiple weeks, like closer to a
- 26:28month timelines. Maybe you think like maybe there
- 26:31is something there it's like really fun or engaging,
- 26:34whatever. And I think that's what made me
- 26:37log in. I was in the middle of Frontier
- 26:40most recent no world buff thing and we were in like a super raid
- 26:44log status mode. We were just raiding like twice
- 26:46a week. And I was like, I'm going to
- 26:48give it a shot. And I logged in and I originally
- 26:51I was playing hardcore ultra iron or hardcore Iron Man, not
- 26:54ultra hardcore Iron Man blind like kind of like Goo Zoo's
- 26:58approach. And I did that for two days.
- 27:02I was killing frogs in Lumbridge.
- 27:04I was killing this like my, that was my XP farm.
- 27:07You know about the frogs? Oh yeah, they're probably.
- 27:10Pretty good. Anyways, so I was I was, I was
- 27:12farming that I I farmed my own set of bronze armor or tin.
- 27:16I don't know. I don't.
- 27:17Remember him? Yeah, the.
- 27:18Bronze armor, Yep, I farmed that.
- 27:20I was blasting and I woke up day three.
- 27:23I'm like, this is bullshit. I'm done with blind dude.
- 27:25I don't there's too much in this game.
- 27:27I unleashed myself and it was so much fun.
- 27:29I, I, I've been, I've been blasting Runescape with the
- 27:33tips, with the tricks, with tutorials, whatever, but I've
- 27:35been having a blast with it. I'm like, at this point it's
- 27:39kind of hard to keep track because I've been going between
- 27:41games. I'm like, I like 44 something
- 27:45days in. We're doing like cursed Gauntlet
- 27:48and. And yeah, well, prior to making
- 27:51the account, like I'm, I'm assuming you've, you'd heard of
- 27:55Old School Runescape. Like what?
- 27:57Yeah, there was. Impressions that you had like
- 28:00before you made my. Impressions of Runescape was
- 28:03like ultra like giga nerdy. Yeah.
- 28:07The friends that I had that played Runescape were like
- 28:11degenerate sweats. Really.
- 28:13The the best in the best way, right?
- 28:15They were degenerate sweats. So the only thing I, the only
- 28:17exposure I had to the game were like people that were like 1.5
- 28:21ticking teks all day or like doing just like bullshit like
- 28:25this, Like they're they're they're ticking chinchampas,
- 28:27whatever they're doing. Yeah.
- 28:29And that was my, that was like my initial reaction.
- 28:31I thought the whole game was like that interesting doing this
- 28:34like weird like interaction between your inventory in the
- 28:36world, like between ticks and it's just like, that's the game.
- 28:39That's what you do. That's so funny.
- 28:41I, I don't know if I've ever talked to anybody that had known
- 28:46like, I guess it's 'cause you had friends who were like
- 28:48sweating the game like that, but most players didn't like, they
- 28:51don't learn about that until they're like a week or two in.
- 28:54Like they don't even think about what a tick is.
- 28:56So like that stuff is so foreign to new players.
- 28:59So that's really interesting that that you had that knowledge
- 29:01Go I. Didn't know about the ticks, I
- 29:03didn't know about ticks or the mechanics.
- 29:05I just knew what they were doing, like I'd seen them play.
- 29:07And they're like clicking. Weird, you're just clicking all
- 29:10over the place. What is this?
- 29:12Yeah, but you knew there was that side of the game.
- 29:14Right. Yeah, these are the degens I'd
- 29:16play Wow with, and they'd be playing Wild while playing
- 29:18Runescape. Yeah, so did you expect you'd
- 29:21have to be doing weird shit like that right away or that?
- 29:24Was my expection. Yeah, just logging in.
- 29:26You have to do that, right? That's like the tutorial, right?
- 29:28You got a 1.5 tick teaks in the tutorial island, right?
- 29:31I'm pretty sure you do. That's so funny.
- 29:34That's awesome. What was your thoughts on like
- 29:36the graphics of old school? Just looking at it first glance,
- 29:40do you remember like what you were thinking?
- 29:41It was terrible. Yeah.
- 29:43It was just weird. That's.
- 29:44The charm, I mean, Classic Wow's graphics are pretty terrible too
- 29:47in a lot of things. I I've been playing games that
- 29:50are like super old graphics don't matter to me at all.
- 29:54I don't care. Yeah, same.
- 29:55The only thing that turned me off about the game initially,
- 29:57like before I started playing, was the play style because it's
- 30:01it's Click to move, like to do everything.
- 30:04Yeah, that was what was hard for me to even want to play.
- 30:07I think because I come from Wow and I come from playing all
- 30:10these games where it's WASD have hotkeys.
- 30:13And yeah, yeah, the clicking to move I feel like would be
- 30:17probably the weirdest part for players who have never really
- 30:21played a game at Click to move if you're just used to WASD.
- 30:24I will say I my friends back a long time ago did try to get me
- 30:28into Runescape but I never did anything.
- 30:30I logged in to Lumbridge, they gave me a staff, fire staff I
- 30:34think like 100K and then I I logged off with their money.
- 30:40Yeah, I think that's a lot of people's initial.
- 30:43It just was so it was like so much.
- 30:45They're like, all right, now go quest.
- 30:46I'm like, I think I would go play Wow.
- 30:49Yeah, I've had so many friends that have been in your position
- 30:54that I've tried to get them to play with the exact same story
- 30:58of just like, why, why it was going on.
- 31:00Like this is not for me. Like immediately kind of thing.
- 31:04Yeah, but how many days did you say you played before you
- 31:07started? Like not worrying about the
- 31:09whole going in blind thing. Two days, two days, two days and
- 31:12I was losing my mind. Just like trying to understand
- 31:15everything. Blind, I was spamming pause
- 31:16champ dude. I talked to Evil Bob and the
- 31:19chat was spamming no, you're going to lose hardcore Iron Man.
- 31:23And that's what that's what really did it for me.
- 31:25Yeah. Just saying no.
- 31:27I'm just like, dude. That's so funny.
- 31:32So but once you started like embracing the tips and tricks,
- 31:36that was like your first week. So what?
- 31:38What were your impressions of the game after you started
- 31:40embracing that stuff? Like what were you feeling as
- 31:43you started experiencing the game?
- 31:44Sweaty bro. Sweaty immediately.
- 31:46I mean, I treated it sweaty though, like I was playing.
- 31:49I was playing a lot. Yeah.
- 31:52When I was first starting, I was playing probably 17 hours a day,
- 31:56maybe 18 hours a day. Wow.
- 31:58So I was just like sending it, dude.
- 32:00You're just hooked. Yeah, I was.
- 32:01I was pretty addicted after, after.
- 32:04I think you know what it was. I think it was all the stats got
- 32:07me addicted. Oh yeah.
- 32:09Where like you get this dopamine of like your attack is 45.
- 32:13Oh, shit. OK, OK.
- 32:15And then you're then you're like strength goes up.
- 32:16You're like, whoa, another level.
- 32:18Yep. Runescape incorporates your
- 32:20skills so well with like the other skills that you don't even
- 32:24realize you're levelling up your skills until you get the levels
- 32:26and you're like, oh, just keeps coming.
- 32:27It's just like perma dopamine. Yeah.
- 32:29Especially early where like it really gets you hooked I feel
- 32:33like. Absolutely, especially if you're
- 32:35playing Iron Man, you just realize how how intertwined all
- 32:38the skills are, like how much they work together all the time
- 32:40no matter what you're doing. Yeah, that's definitely a cool
- 32:44thing to kind of like feel the satisfaction of, of seeing all
- 32:47the number go up working together.
- 32:50Like knowing that every movement you're making, every resource
- 32:53you're gathering is for a reason.
- 32:55Like, it it's it's not a complete waste of your progress
- 32:57to do something in the game. What were your impressions like?
- 33:00Your your initial impressions of Runescapes progression systems
- 33:05compared to like more of this linear journey to level 60 in
- 33:11classic like and then you you start.
- 33:13Like leveling up versus total level?
- 33:15Yeah, like you're not just fighting, you know, 'cause I
- 33:18mean, if you were to do a parallel, I like it.
- 33:20You like it? Yeah.
- 33:22I I really like the Runescape system.
- 33:23In fact, the Runescape experiences that I've had make
- 33:27me wish professions were like Runescape in a sense that like,
- 33:32you know, you level up like maybe a little bit more
- 33:34intertwined, you know, with, with your daily gameplay.
- 33:37But it's not in, in classic, you kind of pick an herb, but you
- 33:39put it in your bag. You forget about it.
- 33:41It doesn't matter to you. Yeah, for the most part, right.
- 33:43It, it, it doesn't matter in Wow, They, they, they try to do
- 33:47something kind of sneaky with, with their professions.
- 33:50They make you have two profession slots.
- 33:52The reason being probably to create social friction so you
- 33:55interact with other people. It's like, I need a blacksmith.
- 33:57And they are intertwined, right? You need a blacksmith for
- 33:59enchanting and you have whatever leather worker for an enchanter.
- 34:03So you need you need like more than two professions to the
- 34:06point that playing self found you can't do what you can in
- 34:10Runescape. So I think that it makes me wish
- 34:13that there was like, you know, unlimited professional thoughts
- 34:16and Wow for some sort of like single player mode, kind of like
- 34:19how Runescape has it where you just can do everything you can.
- 34:22You can chop a tree, fletch the arrow and then and then, you
- 34:26know, poison it, whatever. I don't know.
- 34:28I don't, I don't really know the interactions.
- 34:31I mean, yeah, I I really like it.
- 34:33Yeah, I think it also, it gives a more of an adventurous
- 34:37feeling, like on an immersive level of like it.
- 34:39Wow, it quite literally is a profession.
- 34:42Like it. It feels like you're assigned an
- 34:45actual profession. Like if you're mining in
- 34:47blacksmithing, like those are your things.
- 34:49That's what you go do. Every other resource in the
- 34:52world, you don't even glance at it.
- 34:53It's not shining on your screen. You know it.
- 34:55It doesn't matter to you ever. Whereas in old school, it's kind
- 34:59of like you are everything, whatever you want to be,
- 35:01whenever you want to be. This world is yours to interact
- 35:04with, like no matter where you are, what you're doing.
- 35:07So it definitely adds to that immersion factor.
- 35:10I was definitely missing that when I was playing World of
- 35:14Warcraft for the first time. I was like, I want to do all
- 35:16these professions, why am I not allowed to do everything?
- 35:19What do you mean? I got to reset if I want to do
- 35:21the other thing like that sucks, yeah.
- 35:24I mean, I think like Wow almost like brainwashed me in a way
- 35:26where it's like, I didn't even have that like perspective until
- 35:29I played Runescape because I'd only played a game where you can
- 35:32only have two professions, but you only get the two.
- 35:35And it's like, OK, well, that's just how it is.
- 35:36But then when you play Runescape, you have everything.
- 35:39So I'm jealous of your guys. Runescape.
- 35:41I feel like Runescape in a lot of ways is has aspects of the
- 35:45game that I wish were in Wow. I really do.
- 35:49Yeah. Do you do you have like a like
- 35:50different examples of what? I wish there was more fleshed
- 35:53out single player combat. Like, yeah, like in Wow you have
- 35:58to be not, and this is controversial, a lot of people's
- 36:01like, I mean, I even say it. I think social friction in like
- 36:03group content is the core of MMO World of Warcraft experience,
- 36:08right? But I do think it would be cool
- 36:11to even even if it's just not the normal game mode, just to
- 36:14have like a league where it's like, it's just so low.
- 36:16Wow. That's the game mode.
- 36:17It's so low. Wow.
- 36:18You have all professions, you know, the the raids are tuned
- 36:21for you to do solo whatever, right?
- 36:24I think that that would be really interesting.
- 36:26I think that it's really freeing and Runescape to just log in and
- 36:30it's like, oh, I could go raid. Yep, I could go do I could go do
- 36:33this boss. I could go do anything I want to
- 36:36do. And wow, it's not like that.
- 36:37It's like, oh, it's not 8:00 PM. Oh I can't raid.
- 36:41Yeah, definitely. That's it's a huge hindrance, I
- 36:45think. Yeah, I think that's something
- 36:47that I I really like about Runescape, the ability to just
- 36:50log in and do anything you want, maybe outside of like TOB.
- 36:53Right. Yeah, unless you get insane,
- 36:57most people never do. Yeah.
- 37:00So I guess to bounce off of that, I'm sure you've heard this
- 37:04expression that it's, I don't even know if it's mostly Wow
- 37:08players saying it or if it's like this phrase that old school
- 37:13players have kind of picked up to support old school over Wow
- 37:18when the Wow guys are trying it. But there's this constant saying
- 37:22of progression matters here versus the whole seasonal
- 37:25feeling of Wow. Like especially retail.
- 37:28I know you don't play retail but.
- 37:29No, it isn't classic too. Yeah, so like when?
- 37:32You have a 14 month time window to experience Classic and then
- 37:35it's gone again. Yeah, it breathes FOMO and it
- 37:38doesn't. Yeah.
- 37:39So do you feel like that that expression does actually apply
- 37:42here? Definitely.
- 37:44I mean, I, I feel like, I feel like for me it's a little bit
- 37:47harder because I I feel like I kind of got up until like the
- 37:51last week I got trapped in this cycle where I was almost like
- 37:54pseudo competing with other Wow streamers in the sense like in
- 37:58my head, it wasn't even like there's no competition, right?
- 38:01It's just Runescape. We're all playing solo.
- 38:04But like part of me was like, I want to get first infernal Cape.
- 38:06I want to do this first, right? Like it just be cool.
- 38:09Yeah, it's like almost like friendly like competition.
- 38:11But since I stopped that, it's definitely really nice to know
- 38:17that it's like I could come back and stop like coming right back
- 38:21to where I was have the exact same progression.
- 38:24There's no like maybe there's some devaluation if like skill
- 38:28things happen, but like I could come back in like 2 years and
- 38:31it's like my character is still in the same place, same
- 38:33progression. Yep, Iron Man pick up right
- 38:35where you left off basically. Like the CG?
- 38:38Yep, yeah, it's definitely a nice feeling knowing that, you
- 38:42know, if you log into your character that you haven't been
- 38:44on in a few years, it's like if you really wanted to, if you
- 38:47kept a note of what you were up to, you can it's still on your
- 38:51path that you would be taking anyway, sort of thing.
- 38:53So it's it's nice, It's super. I've found that it's it's
- 38:58relatively quick to catch up to updates and stuff like if and
- 39:01none of them are mandatory either.
- 39:03That's that's the cool part is even if you want to participate
- 39:06in like end game stuff or raids, like you don't need to have the
- 39:11best of the best gear, like best in slot everything.
- 39:13Like you can still do that content even if your gear is
- 39:17like outdated by a few years. So you're never like pressured
- 39:21to go get that new expansions gear and you know all that
- 39:26stuff. So that is that is nice knowing
- 39:30that it is. It does actually apply because I
- 39:33couldn't really speak on it too much because I don't have too
- 39:35much experience with. I've had some experience like my
- 39:38Rath character's gear being immediately destroyed by like
- 39:43the second quest I do in Cata sort of thing.
- 39:46Like it just. Doesn't have a character with
- 39:49like like end game best and slot heroic abyss from wrath.
- 39:53If I log in right now, my character is like worse than a
- 39:57level like it's it's two expansions behind.
- 39:59I haven't played in in two years, three years, whatever.
- 40:02So it's just completely gone. Like I it means nothing now and
- 40:05it it's kind of sad. Yeah, it's not a good feeling.
- 40:08It's something that that I really do like about about
- 40:10Runescapes progression. Like you, I don't, I don't have
- 40:13any of the cool items yet I feel like.
- 40:14But if I get like a, if I end up getting something like a scythe,
- 40:17I will always have that. Oh yeah, it's like you're always
- 40:20just going to have that item. At least in Iron Man, I think
- 40:23that progression is very big. I don't know, I can't even speak
- 40:26on normal game mode. I've never played it on Iron
- 40:29Man. So all my perspective is Iron
- 40:30Man. Yeah, which honestly, I think is
- 40:32is good because it it really is like a yeah, it it's nice to
- 40:37have that like. It's almost the same path.
- 40:39It's like, you know, everybody that's Iron Man that's done XYZ
- 40:42has done kind of the same experience.
- 40:44Yeah, yeah. It definitely opens up that
- 40:46whole tips and tricks avenue of getting down all the methods
- 40:51that you would never really know about and.
- 40:53I was thinking almost in like it's like your rights or
- 40:55whatever. It's like your your trial by
- 40:57fire, you know? You like the right of?
- 40:59Passage, right? Yes, exactly.
- 41:01You have like these, like the rights of passage like oh you
- 41:03sold your first fire Cape on Iron Man?
- 41:05Nice bro. Yeah, what?
- 41:06What, where's your account at now?
- 41:07Like roughly. I'm like 1650 total level and
- 41:14I'm grinding CG like 100 runs in.
- 41:17Nice. That's that's where I'm at.
- 41:19I don't know if that's like a good perspective.
- 41:21I've got like 120 quests done. It's like not everything, but a
- 41:25good amount. Yeah, that's a.
- 41:26That's a big. Job some of the I got, I got all
- 41:28the big quests. Like I haven't done monkey
- 41:29madness too yet. You talked about that earlier.
- 41:31I haven't done that one yet. I haven't done all the like the
- 41:33really higher end quests. Yeah, those are.
- 41:38I guess it'll depend on how much you're embracing the the tips
- 41:41and tricks part, but what what are your the impressions of the
- 41:47old school quests here like in comparison to fetch quests and
- 41:51stuff like that Me off the the old school do old school quests
- 41:54do interesting? Some of them, some of them some.
- 41:57Of them underground pass, dude. Underground pass.
- 42:02Iconic, yeah. I definitely feel like Runescape
- 42:05questing has been fun, they just put some things in to just like
- 42:10mess with you. Oh, absolutely there's.
- 42:11Some things where it's like, oh, you're going to fail this over
- 42:14and over and over and over again.
- 42:16Yep. And you're going to love it.
- 42:18Yep, Mommy, you're you're impressed.
- 42:20I don't love it. Sometimes I don't love it
- 42:21sometimes. You don't love?
- 42:23No. I don't.
- 42:24I don't want to fall on agility ever again.
- 42:28Yeah. Did you follow the the Wow
- 42:31player meta of getting high agility levels very early on to
- 42:36run more and not fail? No, I, I It was so funny when
- 42:39everyone was first starting because everyone started just
- 42:42rushing agility. People were mad.
- 42:43At me for not doing it in the trap people were like why are
- 42:46you not doing agility? You have 20 agility.
- 42:48Stop questing. It's so funny, yeah.
- 42:50It was bad bro. I will say dude, the the it's so
- 42:54funny. Runescape is definitely a game
- 42:56where people love to tell you their opinion on it.
- 42:59Absolutely things. And that's the most that's
- 43:02that's been a really enjoyable experience for me.
- 43:04Dude, we've got the Aboba emote in the chat.
- 43:07Yeah, everybody we've got it's it's been really funny.
- 43:10Yeah. The backstage is crazy.
- 43:11Especially now that I know who who is giving bad advice.
- 43:15Before I didn't know. That's why I was just following
- 43:17bad advice and good advice. But at least now I know like,
- 43:19there's you can definitely. Yeah.
- 43:22Anyways, it's it's been fun. Well, I hope when you do
- 43:25experience those like later quests, you find more enjoyment
- 43:28in it because they really are. Because a lot of the ones that
- 43:32frustrate you that you're talking about like.
- 43:33Low level stuff, that's the problem.
- 43:35Like mornings end Part 2 where you're failing the obstacle and
- 43:38shit and the light puzzle and stuff.
- 43:39Like those are 2000 and six 2000 and five 2006.
- 43:42Yep. So it's like those are very old
- 43:44design quests. Like there's some good writing
- 43:46and everything in those. But the old school team like
- 43:50starting in 2016 on like they actually started having quality
- 43:54written good quests and it it's it's a treat to go through and
- 43:58see like what they've made out of this original world from the
- 44:02early 2000s and how they've like evolved the story.
- 44:05They've done a really good job of it.
- 44:07So hopefully you'll you'll enjoy those more than than the early.
- 44:10Requests, I guess. No, I definitely do because I
- 44:14can tell like Varlemore came out recently because the quests are
- 44:16so much better. Oh yeah.
- 44:18Like they're just not as as like punch you in the face kind of
- 44:21difficulty. Oh yeah, they're they're,
- 44:23they're good. So what would you say your
- 44:26favorite sort of experience with old School has been in terms of
- 44:31activities of like whether you're grinding a skill out for
- 44:35a while, like kind of like the the repetition, or you're like
- 44:38going for a drop at a boss or like CG sort of thing.
- 44:42Like what do you find yourself enjoying the most?
- 44:44I think the most enjoyable thing for me in Runescape is getting
- 44:47something unexpectedly. Yeah, that is a good feeling.
- 44:51Like for example, doing doing something, not knowing it,
- 44:55there's like some rare reward and then you get it and it's
- 44:57like holy shit. Did you have something like that
- 45:00happened? I don't, I did early but I
- 45:05completely forget. I did though.
- 45:07Yeah, I know exactly what you mean.
- 45:08Find the clip. Yeah, right around the time that
- 45:10all the WOW guys came over, I started a group Iron Man with my
- 45:13friend Walnut, who he was an only thing as well.
- 45:16And I I've done a winter tot like I don't even know how many
- 45:20times over the years. It was the barrel, sorry.
- 45:22Oh, the barrel from from Yeah, I.
- 45:24Got the fish barrel? From my.
- 45:26My like 10th tempur rows or something.
- 45:27That's awesome. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 45:29It was the IT was the same deal. Like I had no idea that you
- 45:32could get a dragon hatchet from from Winter Tot because it's
- 45:36like 1 in 10K or something. So I pulled it out of the cart
- 45:41out of nowhere and it was like the biggest shock of all time.
- 45:44Like it was on stream and everything and I was like, I
- 45:47can't believe I'm this surprised at seeing something in the game
- 45:51right now. It's two times rarer than
- 45:54getting a pet. Like that's how crazy it was.
- 45:58So it is a very, very good feeling, like having something
- 46:00like that happened. And it, it can always happen
- 46:03because unless you know every drop table of everything, you'll
- 46:06just, yeah, you'll just stumble across that stuff.
- 46:08But what are, what are your thoughts?
- 46:09Like I'm, I'm assuming are you going for like BofA right now
- 46:11and CG or are you just doing it for like, money?
- 46:13Yeah, yeah. I mean, I'm going for BofA.
- 46:16I I don't know why you. Don't know why I just decided to
- 46:20do it. People said that I do that yeah.
- 46:24So that's I don't I don't really know the stats on it, but
- 46:26apparently it's good. And then my my plan is just to
- 46:30kind of like do all the bosses. That's my goal in the game is to
- 46:33do all of the bosses available, you know do like infernal Cape
- 46:37and so I. Need the gear.
- 46:38It's a fun journey to go on of kind of like the stepping stones
- 46:42up to the yeah, infernal Cape. What is like the peak?
- 46:47Sorry, is infernal Cape the highest thing?
- 46:50What is the highest like difficult?
- 46:52So I mean, it's up for debate because I think in Frol Cape was
- 46:572017, it was like the first big, huge, crazy solo challenge.
- 47:03But now there's challenges like the new delve stuff, which is
- 47:07kind of like that infinite floor thing that's like the newest
- 47:10high end content where you just see how far you can go.
- 47:15There's like the awakened bosses from Desert Treasure 2, which is
- 47:18basically just buffed out versions of the quest bosses
- 47:23that essentially you'll see how much cosmetics.
- 47:27Yeah, you'll see all the cosmetics that come from, you
- 47:32know, beating these crazy challenges like the the Radiant
- 47:35Oath Plate, I think it's called Radiant Oath Plate.
- 47:37It's like the sickest armor in the game.
- 47:39It looks like a stormtrooper, like it's new and it's it's
- 47:43badass. But to get it, it's very, very
- 47:47hard. Like the Yama challenges that
- 47:49you have to do like the contracts are crazy.
- 47:52So the bosses themselves are hard, but the hardest content
- 47:55comes from the E combat achievements because that's when
- 47:58you have to start doing things in a certain amount of time or
- 48:02doing it without using a prayer point or you know, like all this
- 48:05crazy shit. So that's where the insanity
- 48:09comes in to get like the Zuck helm, like the the end all, you
- 48:14know, cosmetic to show everyone that you are like the best of
- 48:18the best. So yeah, and getting your
- 48:20infernal Cape and getting the the quiver from the Colosseum is
- 48:23like your introduction to the craziness.
- 48:28Like that's like the first big thing.
- 48:31And then you can, you'll start doing what your friends were
- 48:34doing with those teaks, but with combat sort of thing.
- 48:37Like you're going to be marking tiles and, and timing ticks and.
- 48:42You know, oh, I'm doing that, dude.
- 48:43I'm ticking. I'm ticking them already good,
- 48:45ticking the ticks. Very good.
- 48:48Oh, that's good. What?
- 48:49What are your thoughts on like these long repetitive like CG
- 48:53grinds? Like if you're going for a goal,
- 48:54Oh. I don't like them.
- 48:56You don't like them? You don't like like doing it
- 48:57over? I I understand why it's so
- 49:00grindy, but I definitely wish it was a little bit less so.
- 49:04Yeah, I get that. I.
- 49:05Think I would have a lot of fun with like a league or something.
- 49:08Oh yeah, did you have you tried the the grid master?
- 49:11I didn't. I didn't try Gridmaster.
- 49:13I've been all about a different game right now.
- 49:15What? Have you been playing?
- 49:16It's a Fellowship just came out. He's like, it's like a Wow
- 49:20dungeon simulator almost. Interesting, I don't think I've
- 49:23ever heard of it. Fellowship.
- 49:25Yeah, I mean it literally, just like this week, so.
- 49:28Oh, gotcha. When I talked to Sardako, he
- 49:29actually said that he was kind of refraining from trying like a
- 49:34gridmaster slash league vibe because he he was so focused on
- 49:37his like main account to he didn't want to like waste any
- 49:41time playing temporary game mode yet on his first year of like
- 49:45grinding the game out. So it's kind of like a mixed
- 49:49mixed opinion on whether to try it as a new player or not.
- 49:53But as a that's someone who's played a long time, I I'm loving
- 49:57the dopamine right now. It's feeling nice.
- 50:00It's so cool. I was watching some dude play
- 50:02and he was like getting like 5 times of XP doing one thing.
- 50:06Oh yeah, doing like agility, strength, like I don't know.
- 50:08I don't know what he was getting.
- 50:09Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's crazy.
- 50:11It's the systems are are nuts. Very crazy looking at.
- 50:15I definitely want to try it the next league.
- 50:17I want to like, know I want to sweat the next league.
- 50:19It looked like so much fun. I was watching.
- 50:21He was this bald guy. Old guy I.
- 50:25Don't know what he's anyways, there's a lot of bald streamers
- 50:27in Runescape so it's not very helpful.
- 50:29Maybe there's ODA block? No, no, no, no it's not.
- 50:33The guy named Bald in the game, I think with your play style
- 50:39like your, I mean, I guess that's assuming that you'd like
- 50:42to continue. Oh, Foe.
- 50:43Yeah, Fox Foe. Yeah, yeah.
- 50:46I was watching his run at the beginning of Gridmaster and it
- 50:48was insane. It was super cool to watch.
- 50:50Yeah, he's got a whole like I actually looked at his his
- 50:52notepad, his like gameplay. He's got like a step by step
- 50:55plan all the way up to like through the grid.
- 50:58It's crazy. But yeah, I was assuming that
- 51:00eventually you'll really enjoy like kind of just actually
- 51:05embracing that speed run slash sweat side that you've that
- 51:09would like carry over from your speed running day.
- 51:12It's. Literally already issuing to do
- 51:13it. You should restart and do it
- 51:15faster. Yeah, you said you're playing a
- 51:18different game right now, which is very healthy.
- 51:20Not many Runescape players would follow in your footsteps, but I
- 51:23think it's a very healthy thing to do to not only play
- 51:25Runescape. All people say I'm getting
- 51:27quitting every day, Yeah. That's a big problem.
- 51:30It's a big problem that Runescape audience has is they
- 51:33cannot stand quit. Yeah, they can't stand it.
- 51:37They they think the worst of the worst if you're playing anything
- 51:39except for Runescape, like they they don't know what to do with
- 51:42themselves. So it's it's it's a problem.
- 51:46But would you say like right now you, you still find yourself
- 51:50like pursuing goals to the point like you see yourself playing
- 51:53for a long time and you're going to keep grinding things and
- 51:56yeah. You mean I want to kill all the
- 51:58bosses? My I I I 100% will not quite
- 52:01Runescape until they kill all like inferno cave Coliseum.
- 52:04I don't think I'm going to do that comment to be honest, but.
- 52:07Oh yeah, no, that it would take years, but.
- 52:09OK, OK, hold on. No it wouldn't.
- 52:11Yes, it would. I do.
- 52:12I look, look, listen, do you know who settled is?
- 52:16Yeah, OK. Very, very good friend of mine.
- 52:18When I came to him and I asked him how long do you think it
- 52:22would take me to get a Zuck helm?
- 52:25He said at least a year or two. And I said the same thing.
- 52:30I said, why do you fucking hate me?
- 52:32Why are you saying that to me? I thought we were good friends.
- 52:34He said, I'm not kidding. He's like, the amount of
- 52:37knowledge that you need to have for some of these things is so
- 52:40absurd. You will waste months of your
- 52:43life trying to achieve these things over and over again like
- 52:47because of how hard they are. He he is one of the best players
- 52:51to ever log into this game to like understand the systems he
- 52:54does not have as a helm. Like it's crazy.
- 52:59Well, that's because he's doing his swamp politics, man.
- 53:01That series been done for fucking three years, yeah.
- 53:05But but, but that's what I mean. He's doing some crazy shit,
- 53:08probably. He's he does a side series where
- 53:10he's going for it. It's just it takes forever.
- 53:13I actually don't know where he's at with it.
- 53:15I'm looking at his latest episode.
- 53:17Yeah. No, he's not there yet.
- 53:18He's not at his at helm yet. He has.
- 53:21Oh, the AI said. No, the popular Old School
- 53:24Runescape creator does not have a Zuck helmet.
- 53:27Yeah, he's not OK. He's not there yet, though.
- 53:32I just checked. I was like, I don't know how
- 53:34that grind's been for him, but it's also one of the things
- 53:38where the goal post keeps. Because they add more embosses,
- 53:43right? Yeah, so you have to, you lose
- 53:46it every time you lose that helmet, every time that a new
- 53:48boss comes out with combat achievements, you have to get it
- 53:51back. So it's like.
- 53:52It's like quest Cape. Exactly.
- 53:54Cool. I think that's really cool as a
- 53:56system. It is, yeah.
- 53:57And. Wow, it's not like that.
- 53:58They'll they'll kind of like have an achievement if you get
- 54:00it, you keep your stuff forever, even if they like make it harder
- 54:03to get in the future. Interesting.
- 54:05Yeah, I think it is a a cool system they have.
- 54:08You get it, earn it back. Like prove that you're still
- 54:11deserve we're having it sort of thing.
- 54:12Collection seems like a big part of the game.
- 54:14I I was watching whether it's achievements or Diaries or, or
- 54:20combat achievements or even just combat like or collection log
- 54:23like. I feel like there's a really
- 54:24good collection aspect to the game.
- 54:26Wow, I was missing the Wow Classic doesn't have that.
- 54:28Really. Yeah, retail does.
- 54:30It's good, like for collectors and people who like to cut their
- 54:32pets or mounts or whatever, like cosmetics.
- 54:36The Classic doesn't really have that, and that's definitely
- 54:38something that I wish it did in some way.
- 54:41Yeah, that would be a cool system to have been like, I
- 54:44guess because in retail it's like the amounts that people are
- 54:47going for, right, Mostly, I guess like the that's the big
- 54:49collection thing. It's got like the pets here, but
- 54:51pets are just insanely rare on old school.
- 54:54But the pet hunters are very, very real, very out there.
- 54:58I was watching a pet hunter, yeah, an Iron Man pet hunter
- 55:02that had like 4000 clues made. I was like, dude, this is this
- 55:07is not healthy. Yeah, they, they get pretty
- 55:09insane. It's it's ridiculous.
- 55:11We've been going for a while. I've kept you here for a long
- 55:13time. But I do have one last question,
- 55:15probably the most important question.
- 55:16What would you rate Old School Runescape out of 10?
- 55:21I would give Runescape a solid 8 out of 10. 8 out of 10.
- 55:26All right, where are those two points getting done it?
- 55:27Would be 9. It would be 9 out of 10 if I
- 55:30didn't have to do dumb old quests.
- 55:33It would be 10 out of 10 if I got a bow for the next run.
- 55:36All right, but look, you got you use quest helper though, right?
- 55:39You got the fucking arrows flashing all over NPCS items
- 55:42highlighted, all right, it's not that bad then.
- 55:46No, it's it. Is that bad?
- 55:47Because because the problem was as a new player.
- 55:50The new player experience is not fun when you don't know where
- 55:54Brimhaven is. Yeah, that's true, you know.
- 55:56Where XYZ is. So I'm like, I have a quest
- 55:58helper and then I have shortest path.
- 56:01And the shortest path actually should be called the longest
- 56:03path because it tells you to go somewhere thinking you have like
- 56:06a teleport unlocked. So as a new player, I'm like
- 56:08walking to a spirit tree. I don't have them unlocked and I
- 56:11go to the spirit tree and it's like teleport to here and it's
- 56:14like I can't do that. So I can turn.
- 56:16Around like it was it was really hard.
- 56:18I think the first like 20 days I was so frustrated questing
- 56:22because I didn't know the world. If I restarted right now I
- 56:25definitely would like quest more.
- 56:27Yeah, but man, I I got like, it was so bad for me.
- 56:31Yeah, there's, there's definitely like a a learning
- 56:34curve there for the. World is a massive.
- 56:36It's huge. Yeah, it's it's so big and
- 56:39there's so many ways to get around, like so many teleports.
- 56:42Yeah, I still travel inefficiently.
- 56:45Like having played just fucking almost 20 years, I still don't
- 56:49take the most optimal route almost everywhere I go because
- 56:52of how many different ways there are to get different places
- 56:55where to go, like how to get there.
- 56:58But I think you're in that unique position of like you
- 57:02jumped from blind into full blast tips, tricks, quest
- 57:08helper, highlighting everything to the point where it's like
- 57:12there there was no in between section.
- 57:14So it's like you never had that full like exploration
- 57:17experience. But that's OK.
- 57:18You, you, you really, that's the beauty of Runescape is you don't
- 57:21need that aspect of the game if you don't want it.
- 57:25Like you, there's a way to enjoy the game differently.
- 57:29Like everybody has their own way to enjoy it.
- 57:30If you, you can cut. To be honest, I really liked
- 57:33enjoying like exploring the world, even with quest helper,
- 57:36it was really cool. Yeah, it is still.
- 57:38Seeing all the places for the first, there's still places I
- 57:40haven't gone on the map. Oh yeah, there's so many places.
- 57:43There's places I haven't been multiple, many places I still
- 57:46haven't been because of the content you'd have to do to get
- 57:50there. Or if it's new, it's like
- 57:52there's always somewhere. But.
- 57:55Well, I I mean, I hope you keep playing, dude.
- 57:57I hope you beat every fucking boss.
- 57:59I I think you could. You're you're a gamer, dude.
- 58:01You're not gonna have a problem doing it.
- 58:02Just it's just gonna be those repetitive grinds.
- 58:04Those are gonna be your obstacle.
- 58:06Yeah, but I mean, you're no stranger.
- 58:10You're no stranger to, to long grinds.
- 58:12So you'll be fine. I think you'll you'll do it.
- 58:15Thank you so much for for taking your time out to talk with me
- 58:18about all of it was a ton of fun.
- 58:20Interesting hearing about all the the Wow hardcore stuff and
- 58:23the history behind it. It's very interesting.
- 58:25There's so much, but I mean, I've been playing the game for
- 58:27like 20 years. There's.
- 58:28So many things, I bet. Man, that's crazy, but all
- 58:31right. It was a blast, thank you man.
- 58:33Big thank you to Ampy for sitting down and talking with
- 58:35me. That was awesome.
- 58:36Kind of hearing about the history behind Hardcore, like
- 58:39where it came from, what was going on with it.
- 58:41That was really cool to talk about South.
- 58:43I'm super glad that he he found some time to talk.
- 58:47All of his links are down in the description.
- 58:49Make sure to go tell him hello if he's streaming, subscribe to
- 58:52his YouTube. You know the deal.
- 58:54You know what's happening here by now.
- 58:55Just show him some support next episode.
- 58:57I'm talking with someone who was actually a part of my first ever
- 59:01Nomergon run alongside Soda, Poppin, and Grubby.
- 59:05She out DPS Ed me which I chalked up to her just being a
- 59:08more experienced Wow player and then I learned she was playing
- 59:12on controller. So see you all next episode
- 59:17where we talk with Annie Fuchsia.
