- 0:00Do you have a son or a daughter
- 0:05who's walked away from God, who's wandered away
- 0:09from the Lord, and who seemingly is having a love affair with the
- 0:12world? Is there someone you're standing in the gap
- 0:16for as you intercede and you pray and you cry
- 0:20out to God for that person to return to Christ?
- 0:24Beloved, I have good news for you. In today's
- 0:28passage in Isaiah 49, we are going to unpack some
- 0:32promises that God has concerning our sons
- 0:36and daughters who've wandered away from God.
- 0:41We're going to unpack them and we're going to pray them. Don't miss
- 0:45it. Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is
- 0:48September 26th. Now let's continue our journey
- 0:52reading through the entire Bible in one year. This week we are reading from the
- 0:56New Living Translation. For the Old Testament and
- 1:00for the New Testament.
- 1:06Isaiah 48:12-50:11.
- 1:15Listen to me, O family of Jacob, Israel my
- 1:19chosen one. I alone am God, the first and the
- 1:23last. It was my hand that laid the foundations of the earth.
- 1:27The palm of my right hand spread out the heavens above. I spoke
- 1:31and they came into being. Have any of your idols
- 1:35ever told you this? Come, all of you, and listen.
- 1:39The Lord has chosen Cyrus as his ally. He will use him to
- 1:43put an end to the empire of Babylon, destroying the Babylonian armies.
- 1:48I have said it. I am calling Cyrus. I will
- 1:52send him on this errand and will help him succeed. Come closer
- 1:56and listen. I have always told you plainly what
- 2:00would happen so you would have no trouble understanding.
- 2:04And now the Sovereign Lord and his Spirit have sent me with his message.
- 2:09The Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, says,
- 2:12I am the Lord your God who teaches you what is good and
- 2:16leads you along the paths you should follow. Oh,
- 2:19that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had
- 2:23peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling
- 2:26like waves. Then you would have become as numerous
- 2:30as the sands along the seashore— too many to count! There would
- 2:35have been no need for your destruction. Yet even now, be free
- 2:40from your captivity! Leave Babylon and the Babylonians,
- 2:43singing as you go. Shout to the ends of the earth that
- 2:47the Lord has redeemed His servants, the people of Israel!
- 2:51They were not thirsty when He led them through the desert. He divided the
- 2:55rock and water gushed out for them to drink. But there is no peace for
- 2:59the wicked, says the Lord. Listen to Me, all of you in far-off
- 3:03lands. The Lord called Me before My birth.
- 3:07From within the womb He called Me by Name.
- 3:11He made my words of judgment as sharp as a sword.
- 3:15He has hidden me in the shadow of His hand. I am like
- 3:19a sharp arrow in His quiver.
- 3:22He said to me, You are My servant, Israel, and you will bring Me
- 3:25glory. I replied, But my work all seems
- 3:29so useless. I have spent my strength for nothing and
- 3:33to no purpose at all. Yet I leave it all in the hands of
- 3:36the Lord. I will trust God for my reward. And now
- 3:41the Lord speaks, He who formed me in my mother's womb to
- 3:44be His servant, who commissioned me to bring His people
- 3:48of Israel back to Him. The Lord has honored me, and my
- 3:52God has given me strength. He says, You will do more than
- 3:56restore the people of Israel to Me. I will make you a light to
- 4:00the Gentiles, and you will bring My salvation to the ends
- 4:04of the earth. The Lord,
- 4:07the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel, says to the one who is despised
- 4:12and rejected by a nation, to the one who is the servant of rulers: Kings
- 4:20will stand at attention when you pass by; princes
- 4:23will bow low because the Lord has chosen you. He,
- 4:26the faithful Lord, the Holy One of Israel, chooses you.
- 4:31This is what the Lord says: At just the right time I
- 4:36will respond to you. On the day of salvation I will help you.
- 4:41I will give you as a token and pledge to
- 4:44Israel. This will prove that I will re-establish the land of Israel
- 4:48and reassign it to its own people again. Through you I
- 4:52am saying to the prisoners of darkness, come out!
- 4:56I am giving you your freedom. They will be my sheep
- 5:00grazing in green pastures and on hills
- 5:04that were previously bare.
- 5:07They will neither hunger nor thirst. The searing sun and
- 5:12scorching desert winds will not reach them anymore,
- 5:17for the Lord in his mercy will lead them beside cool
- 5:21waters, and I will make my mountains into level paths
- 5:25for them. The highways will be raised above the valleys.
- 5:28See, my people will return from far away,
- 5:32from lands to the north and west, and from as far south
- 5:37as Egypt. Sing for joy,
- 5:40O heavens! Rejoice, O earth! Burst into
- 5:44song, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted
- 5:48his people and will have compassion on them in their sorrow.
- 5:52Yet Jerusalem says, the Lord has deserted us,
- 5:56the Lord has forgotten us. Never!
- 5:59Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no
- 6:03love for a child she has borne? But even if that were possible,
- 6:08I would not forget you. See, I have written your
- 6:12name on my hand. Ever before me is a picture
- 6:15of Jerusalem's walls and ruins. Soon your descendants
- 6:21will come back, and all who are trying to destroy you will go away.
- 6:25Look and see, for all your children will come back to you.
- 6:29As surely as I live, says the Lord,
- 6:34they will be like jewels or bridal ornaments for
- 6:38you to display.
- 6:42Even the most desolate parts of your abandoned land will
- 6:46soon be crowded with your people. Your enemies
- 6:50who enslaved you will be far away. The generations
- 6:54born in exile will return and say, we need more room,
- 6:58it's crowded here. Then you will think to yourself,
- 7:02who has given me all these descendants?
- 7:05For most of my children were killed, and the rest were carried
- 7:09away into exile. I was left here all alone.
- 7:13Who bore these children? Who raised them for Me?
- 7:18This is what the Sovereign Lord says: See,
- 7:22I will give a signal to the godless nations. They will carry
- 7:26your little sons back to you in their arms.
- 7:29They will bring your daughters on their shoulders. Kings and
- 7:33queens will serve you. They will care for all
- 7:37your needs. They will bow to the earth before you and lick
- 7:41the dust from your feet. Then you will know that
- 7:44I am the Lord. Those who wait for me will never
- 7:48be put to shame.
- 7:52Who can snatch the plunder of war from the hands of a warrior?
- 7:56Who can demand that a tyrant let his captives
- 8:00go? But the Lord says, the captives of warriors
- 8:04will be released,
- 8:07and the plunder of tyrants will be retrieved. For I
- 8:11will fight those who fight you, and I will save your children.
- 8:15I will feed your enemies with their own flesh. They will
- 8:19be drunk with rivers of their own blood.
- 8:22All the world will know that I, the Lord, am your Savior and Redeemer,
- 8:27the Mighty One of Israel.
- 8:30The Lord asks, did I sell you as slaves to my creditors?
- 8:35Is that why you are not here? Is your mother gone because I divorced
- 8:39her and sent her away? No, you went away as captives because
- 8:44of your sins, and your mother too was taken because of your sins.
- 8:48Was I too weak to save you? Is that why
- 8:52the house is silent and empty when I come home? Is it
- 8:56because I have no power to rescue? No, that is
- 9:00not the reason, for I can speak to the sea and make it dry,
- 9:04I can turn rivers into deserts covered with dying fish.
- 9:08I am the one who sends darkness out across the skies, bringing it
- 9:12to a state of mourning. The Sovereign Lord has
- 9:15given me his words of wisdom so that I know what to say to
- 9:19all these weary ones. Morning by morning he wakens
- 9:23me and opens my understanding to his will.
- 9:27The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me and I have listened.
- 9:32I do not rebel or turn away. I give my back to
- 9:36those who beat me and my cheeks to those who pull out my
- 9:39beard. I do not hide from shame, for they mock me and spit
- 9:44in my face. Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not
- 9:47be dismayed. Therefore, I have set my face like a
- 9:51stone, determined to do his will, and I know that I will
- 9:55triumph. He who gives me justice is near.
- 9:59Who will dare to oppose me now? Where are my enemies?
- 10:03Let them appear. See, the Sovereign Lord is on my side.
- 10:08Who will declare me guilty? All my enemies will be destroyed
- 10:12like old clothes that have been eaten by moths.
- 10:15Who among you fears the Lord and obeys his servant?
- 10:20If you are walking in darkness without a ray of light,
- 10:23trust in the Lord. And rely on your God.
- 10:28But watch out, you who live in your own light and
- 10:32warm yourselves by your own fires!
- 10:35This is the reward you will receive from Me: you will
- 10:38soon lie down in great torment.
- 10:48Ephesians 4:17-32.
- 10:57With the Lord's authority, let me, Paul, say this:
- 11:01Live no longer as the ungodly do, for they
- 11:04are hopelessly confused. Their closed minds are full
- 11:08of darkness. They are far away from the life of God
- 11:12because they have shut their minds and hardened their hearts against Him.
- 11:17They don't care anymore about right and wrong, and they
- 11:20have given themselves over to immoral ways. Their lives are
- 11:25filled with all kinds of impurity and greed. But that
- 11:28isn't what you were taught when you learned about Christ.
- 11:32Since you have heard all about Him and have learned the truth that
- 11:36is in Jesus, throw off your old nature and your
- 11:40former way of life.
- 11:43Which is rotten through and through, full of lust and
- 11:47deception. Instead, there must be
- 11:51a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes.
- 11:54You must display a new nature because you
- 11:58are a new person created in God's likeness— righteous,
- 12:02holy, and true. So put away all
- 12:06falsehood and tell your neighbor the truth, because we belong
- 12:10to each other. And don't sin by letting anger gain control
- 12:14over you. Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry,
- 12:18for anger gives a mighty foothold to
- 12:22the devil. If you are a thief, stop stealing.
- 12:26Begin using your hands for honest work, and then give generously
- 12:29to others in need. Don't use foul or
- 12:33abusive language. Let everything you say be
- 12:36good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement
- 12:40to those who hear them. And do not bring sorrow
- 12:44to God's Holy Spirit by the way you live.
- 12:47Remember, he is the one who has identified you as his own,
- 12:52guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.
- 12:57Get rid of all bitterness, rage,
- 13:00anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as
- 13:03all types of malicious behavior. Instead, be kind to each other,
- 13:10tenderhearted, forgiving one another just as God through Christ
- 13:14has forgiven you.
- 13:21Psalm 69:1-18.
- 13:26Save me, O God, for the floodwaters are up to my neck.
- 13:30Deeper and deeper I sink into the mire. I can't find
- 13:34a foothold to stand on. I am in deep water and the floods overwhelm
- 13:39me. I am exhausted from crying for help.
- 13:42My throat is parched and dry. My eyes are swollen
- 13:47with weeping, waiting for my God to help me.
- 13:50Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than
- 13:54the hairs on my head. These enemies who seek
- 13:58to destroy me are doing so without cause. They attacked
- 14:02me with lies, demanding that I give back what I didn't steal.
- 14:06O God, You know how foolish I am. My sins cannot
- 14:10be hidden from You. Don't let those who trust in You stumble
- 14:14because of me. O Sovereign Lord Almighty, don't let
- 14:18me cause them to be humiliated. O God of Israel,
- 14:22for I am mocked and shamed for Your sake.
- 14:25Humiliation is written all over my face. Even my
- 14:29brothers pretend they don't know me; they treat me like
- 14:33a stranger. Passion for Your house burns within
- 14:37me, so those who insult You are also insulting me.
- 14:41When I weep and fast before the Lord, they scoff at me.
- 14:45When I dress in sackcloth to show sorrow, they make fun of me.
- 14:49I am the favorite topic of town gossip, and all
- 14:52the drunkards sing about me. But I keep right
- 14:56on praying to You, Lord, hoping this is the time You will show me favor.
- 15:01In Your unfailing love, O God, answer my prayer with
- 15:05Your sure salvation. Pull me out of the mud. Don't let me
- 15:09sink any deeper. Rescue me from those who hate me and
- 15:13pull me from these deep waters. Don't let the
- 15:16floods overwhelm me, or the deep waters swallow me,
- 15:21or the pit of death devour me. Answer my prayers,
- 15:25O Lord, for your unfailing love is wonderful.
- 15:28Turn and take care of me, for your mercy is
- 15:32so plentiful. Don't hide from your servant.
- 15:35Answer me quickly, for I am in deep trouble.
- 15:39Come and rescue me. Free me from all my
- 15:42enemies.
- 15:47Proverbs 24: 5 and 6.
- 15:51A wise man is mightier than a strong man, and a man of knowledge
- 15:55is more powerful than a strong man. So don't go
- 15:59to war without wise guidance. Victory depends on having many
- 16:03counselors.
- 16:09I want to speak to you today from our reading from Jeremiah
- 16:13chapter 49. And I want to begin with a piercing,
- 16:17penetrating question.
- 16:21Do any of you have grown children who
- 16:25have wandered away from the Lord,
- 16:29who are prodigal sons or prodigal daughters?
- 16:34If you can relate to that, there is such a deep grief
- 16:38and a sorrow and a mother or a father's heart
- 16:43when they have a grown child who has wandered away from Jesus.
- 16:48And it, it's just a grief that's
- 16:53hard to bear. But I have good news for you today, my friend.
- 16:58We read a passage in Jeremiah chapter 49
- 17:01that we're going to turn into a prayer that
- 17:06God will hear. We will pray this prayer, and it will be a
- 17:10prayer that is bullseye, right on the mark.
- 17:17I am going to start in verse 14, and the
- 17:21context for this is Jerusalem
- 17:26and the inhabitants of Jerusalem have gone into exile.
- 17:30They are taken away to Babylon, And now they're in
- 17:34exile, and many of them, their children,
- 17:38their sons and daughters have been sold into slavery, and they're separated
- 17:42from their sons and their daughters, and they are so dejected and
- 17:46rejected and forlorn, and they feel forgotten and
- 17:49deserted and abandoned and rejected.
- 17:54And so I'm reading now from Jeremiah chapter 49,
- 17:57starting in verse 14. Yet Jerusalem or Zion says,
- 18:02the Lord has deserted us. The Lord has
- 18:05forgotten us. That's how they feel. But you cannot go
- 18:09based upon your emotions and your feelings. Your emotions and
- 18:13feelings can be very deceptive. You may feel what you're feeling,
- 18:17but it's not the truth.
- 18:21So God answers this emotional cry with the truth
- 18:25in verse 15. He says, never!
- 18:28Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she
- 18:32feel no love for a child she has borne? But even
- 18:36if that were possible, I would not forget you.
- 18:40See, I have written your name on my hand.
- 18:45Ever before me is a picture of Jerusalem's walls in
- 18:50ruins. Soon Your descendants
- 18:55will come back, and all who are trying
- 18:58to destroy you will go away. Look and
- 19:02see, for all your children will come back
- 19:06to you. As surely as I live, says the Lord,
- 19:10they will be like jewels or bridal ornaments for
- 19:14you to display.
- 19:18Now I want to jump into the New King James Version,
- 19:24starting in Isaiah 49:20. The children you
- 19:28will have after you have lost the
- 19:32others will say again in your ears, this place is
- 19:35too small for me. Give me a place where I may
- 19:39dwell. And so
- 19:43this is a promise, a rich promise, and there are layers
- 19:47or levels of meaning that we can unpack.
- 19:50Now, at the national level concerning Israel,
- 19:54concerning the Jewish people, they were scattered to all the
- 19:57nations, and this is a promise that God is going to
- 20:01regather them, bring them back to the land, and their
- 20:05sons and daughters are going to literally be carried on the shoulders of
- 20:09the Gentiles as they bring them back home to Israel. So that's
- 20:14true. And that is an application and a truth for the nation
- 20:18and the people of Israel. But it's also true that we can take
- 20:22it at a personal application level, that the children
- 20:26that you have lost, what He's
- 20:30saying here is that we can pray and He's going to hear our prayer.
- 20:34So I'm going to just turn this into a prayer starting in verse 17.
- 20:38Lord, You know each person who is listening to
- 20:42this particular lesson today. You know
- 20:46the names of our children who have
- 20:50wandered far away from You, who are having
- 20:54a love affair with the world, and there is no room in that world for
- 20:58Jesus. We turn this Scripture
- 21:02passage into a prayer, a heart's cry,
- 21:06an impassioned plea. Father,
- 21:10Your Word says, and it is— Your Word is
- 21:14true. And when we pray the Word of God, we can hit the
- 21:18mark bullseye because we are in total alignment with
- 21:22Your will. So we pray, Father,
- 21:26Your Word says soon Your
- 21:30descendants will come back and all who are trying
- 21:34to destroy you will go away. And we pray in verse
- 21:3718, look and see, for all your children— and
- 21:42we name them in our heart, we name our children— they
- 21:46will come back to you. As surely as I live, says the
- 21:50Lord, they will be like jewels or bridal ornaments for you to
- 21:55display. We pray that as our heart's prayer,
- 22:00heart's cry today. We pray Isaiah chapter 49,
- 22:04verse 20, children that we have and
- 22:08that we have lost, children that we will have
- 22:12and others that we have lost, others will again
- 22:16say in our ears, this place is too
- 22:20small for me. Give me a place where I may dwell. So Father,
- 22:24whatever that looks like, however that plays out,
- 22:28if You are to give us spiritual children,
- 22:31that we can mentor and guide and coach and take
- 22:36under our wing. If You give us spiritual sons and
- 22:40daughters in the place of the biological
- 22:44ones who have turned their back upon You, however You
- 22:48want to do that, Lord, we just pray that You will fulfill Your
- 22:53good Word. We pray for the salvation
- 22:57of our lost loved ones who are far from You.
- 23:02And we pray, Lord, that You will orchestrate circumstances in their
- 23:06lives to reveal Yourself to
- 23:10them, to show them who You are,
- 23:13and that they will cry out to You, that they
- 23:16will no longer be self-sufficient and standing
- 23:21in pride or arrogance or standing in their comfortableness
- 23:25or their complacency. But Lord, wake them up,
- 23:29shake them up, bring them to
- 23:32the end of themselves,
- 23:35and let them come to you. Let them come to the cross.
- 23:39Let them recognize and acknowledge
- 23:42and confess, I am a sinner, I need
- 23:47a Savior. Rescue me, save me,
- 23:50Redeem me. Father, we cry out to You for
- 23:54lost souls today, and we
- 23:59pray that You would fulfill Your good Word that says that
- 24:02our descendants will come back and that
- 24:06our children will come back and that our children
- 24:10will be like jewels and bridal ornaments for You to
- 24:14display.
- 24:18I pray all of these things now in
- 24:22the name of Jesus. Amen.
- 24:45Yeah, yeah,
- 24:49yeah.
- 25:30The Aaronic Blessing from Numbers chapter 6,
- 25:3324 to 26.
- 25:37Adonai bless you and keep you.
- 25:40Adonai make his face to shine upon you and be
- 25:44gracious to you. Adonai lift up his countenance upon
- 25:48you and give you peace.
