- 1:30Speaker 1: the show in terms of income. I continue I've continued
- 1:33Speaker 1: to look for advertisers, but I found it a difficult
- 1:38Speaker 1: challenge just because of the format of the show as
- 1:41Speaker 1: well as the overall audience appeal to and we're looking
- 1:46Speaker 1: to expand our video theater. From one episode a month
- 1:50Speaker 1: to two, and listener support can help with that. If
- 1:54Speaker 1: we have a total of eight hundred dollars per month
- 1:58Speaker 1: and listener pledges, we will we'll upgrade our server, which
- 2:02Speaker 1: will allow us to better be able to serve our
- 2:05Speaker 1: growing traffic. At the one thousand dollars level, we'll avoid
- 2:10Speaker 1: ads and sponsor announcements prior to the show except during
- 2:15Speaker 1: the listener support campaign. At the thirteen hundred dollars a
- 2:20Speaker 1: month level, we'll look at upgrading software and hardware used
- 2:25Speaker 1: to produce the show, and at the two thousand dollars
- 2:28Speaker 1: a month level, we won't do any more listener support campaigns,
- 2:32Speaker 1: but we will have listener appreciation specials instead. And at
- 2:36Speaker 1: the three thousand dollars level, we will start another weekly
- 2:41Speaker 1: podcast series not related to Great Detectives, but using old
- 2:46Speaker 1: time radio that will be determined in part by the
- 2:50Speaker 1: vote of the fans, in particular Patreon supporters at various levels.
- 2:54Speaker 1: But we'll talk about that more after the show. Well,
- 2:57Speaker 1: now we'll get into today's episode of the The original

- 3:53Speaker 2: Modern Crime now comes transcribed to radio, starring Hollywood's brilliant
- 3:57Speaker 2: and talented actor Tom Conway as the Saint.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Mind if I sit down here, mister?
- 4:15Speaker 4: Oh no, I don't mind.

- 4:22Speaker 4: Oh oh yeah, yeah, you're a good.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Looking faith Oh you're just saying that to be sociable.

- 4:40Speaker 5: It's okay?
- 4:41Speaker 3: How would you know you haven't touched it?
- 4:44Speaker 4: Being on a train kind of spoils my appetite.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So that's what's spoiling your appetite?
- 4:48Speaker 4: Sure, what else I wouldn't know?
- 4:52Speaker 3: Uh, mister Doyle, who's paying for my dinner?
- 4:55Speaker 6: Me?
- 4:56Speaker 3: Or you?
- 4:57Speaker 4: Well, they take a good look. I'd be glad to
- 5:03Speaker 4: buy you a dinner.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Oh good thing. I'm not the demure type. Restrain your
- 5:07Speaker 3: joy and hand me that menu. Sure, thank you, and
- 5:11Speaker 3: button your jacket your guns showing.
- 5:20Speaker 7: Hello, Yeah, I want some information, doesn't I want to
- 5:24Speaker 7: know if the Chicago Limited is on time and passing
- 5:28Speaker 7: through town here, and thanks well on the dot, Mitch.
- 5:38Speaker 7: Two thirty in the am. It's a little past eleven
- 5:41Speaker 7: now the train stops here for ten minutes.
- 5:43Speaker 4: That ain't an awful long time. Colonel's long enough. Maybe
- 5:48Speaker 4: I don't want another drink.
- 5:49Speaker 7: You don't need it. I hope noiles enjoin his train ride.
- 5:53Speaker 7: I wouldn't you think you'd be glad to see us, Mitch?
- 5:57Speaker 4: I want another drink?
- 5:58Speaker 5: You know something? I think i'd be so happy that
- 6:01Speaker 5: it's just Liabeler killing.
- 6:11Speaker 6: Oh I'm closed for the knife. I've gone out of business. Oh,
- 6:19Speaker 6: I'll hate you in the morning.
- 6:20Speaker 8: Oh okay, just a second, mister Templar.
- 6:27Speaker 6: Yes, and the hours midnight and I am about to
- 6:29Speaker 6: go to sleep.
- 6:30Speaker 8: You look very nice.
- 6:32Speaker 6: Oh you must say that to all the boys whose
- 6:34Speaker 6: bells you ring.
- 6:35Speaker 9: I'm not working my way through college, Simon.
- 6:38Speaker 6: No, from where I stand, i'd say you'd graduate.
- 6:41Speaker 9: From where I stand. I'm getting tired of standing.
- 6:44Speaker 6: Oh, I'm sorry, come in. It's a little late to
- 6:49Speaker 6: begin a beautiful friendship.
- 6:50Speaker 3: I'm frightened.
- 6:51Speaker 6: Your eyes tell me that, And they're very beautiful.
- 6:56Speaker 9: You know a lot about women, don't you?
- 6:57Speaker 6: Not as much as i'd like.
- 6:59Speaker 9: I'm married, did you, Doyle?
- 7:01Speaker 6: Doyle, I don't know him. I want you to meet
- 7:03Speaker 6: him tonight so I can be frightened too.
- 7:06Speaker 9: He's coming into town on the Chicago Limited in a
- 7:08Speaker 9: few hours.
- 7:09Speaker 6: Oh you want me to bring him from.
- 7:11Speaker 9: I want you to see that he gets home alive.
- 7:15Speaker 6: Well, the police do fairly well at that kind of thing.
- 7:19Speaker 8: I can't go to them.
- 7:20Speaker 6: Oh you're afraid to Why should.
- 7:23Speaker 8: You kill me if he found out?
- 7:26Speaker 6: I see where is home for? And I'm to see
- 7:31Speaker 6: that he gets there alive. You haven't told me why
- 7:34Speaker 6: he might not, nor do you intend to. Why should
- 7:40Speaker 6: I bother missus? Doyle?
- 7:42Speaker 9: Perhaps because I'm lonely and afraid.
- 7:45Speaker 10: Perhaps because i'd like you to call me match, Simon,
- 7:49Speaker 10: have no one else to go to?
- 7:51Speaker 6: All right? I meet his train when five in the morning,
- 7:55Speaker 6: five hours to go.
- 7:56Speaker 9: Then I'll go home now, taking care of things, Simon,
- 8:02Speaker 9: I might even be able to sleep.
- 8:04Speaker 6: Hasn't dreams? Man?
- 8:18Speaker 4: Another drink?
- 8:20Speaker 3: What are you trying to do? Launch me?
- 8:23Speaker 4: Don't be that way, baby, I'm drinking right along with
- 8:26Speaker 4: you right now.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I'd say you were a couple of blocks in front
- 8:29Speaker 3: of me. Hey, what time is it anyway?
- 8:34Speaker 4: Yeah? Too thirty almost early ours. Baby, Hey, don't tell
- 8:42Speaker 4: me the trains running out of gas.
- 8:44Speaker 3: That's just christ that's what it is.
- 8:47Speaker 6: Just a whistle stop.
- 8:49Speaker 3: I was talking about whistling.
- 8:51Speaker 4: I said it was a whistle stop. Nothing press.
- 8:56Speaker 11: An awful dark got do you think somebody lives in
- 9:00Speaker 11: these times?
- 9:01Speaker 3: I knew a fellow once lived in a small town.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Yeah, he was a dope.
- 9:07Speaker 3: What did you see out the window?
- 9:09Speaker 4: A couple of people getting off, some.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Waiting they get say, who are you throwing your whiskey?
- 9:15Speaker 4: As I didn't throw it slipped out of my hand.
- 9:19Speaker 3: That's so. Yeah, somewise you hand shaken. I'm tired, you're scared.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Look, look, let's get out of this club card too many.
- 9:28Speaker 3: People anything, you say, Yeah, it's kind of a switch.
- 9:34Speaker 3: The girl seeing the fellow.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Home, Yeah, funny.
- 9:37Speaker 3: So why don't you have somebody pulling the train out
- 9:42Speaker 3: from under me?
- 9:43Speaker 4: Just hold on to me. They're just switching engines.
- 9:47Speaker 3: They got to fasten these trains down better.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Yeah, this here's my car. The cor Partons right along here.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Oh, aren't you fancy? I just got a lower birth.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Yeah. Oh no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Come well, girl's gotta be careful of her reputation. Nobody
- 10:04Speaker 3: around but either.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Please come in. We'll gabble while.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Okay, give here. It's kind of darkn won't you put
- 10:14Speaker 3: a light on your.
- 10:33Speaker 5: Hey, Templar?
- 10:34Speaker 6: Huh, oh, Lieutenant Flynn, what.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Are you doing here?
- 10:40Speaker 6: Is there a law against lurking on station platforms?
- 10:43Speaker 5: Don't tell the commissioner you're meaning the train, and.
- 10:46Speaker 6: It's easy to see why they made you.
- 10:48Speaker 11: Lieutenant Hell, thanks very much, friend of yours, coming in unlimited?
- 10:53Speaker 11: That's hard to say translated. You mean you're not saying
- 10:58Speaker 11: why are you here? I'm crazy about trains. Oh, also,
- 11:02Speaker 11: the department got a wire. Seems somebody on that train
- 11:05Speaker 11: wasn't a very good traveler.
- 11:07Speaker 6: Hum, seems he died en route. His train sickness can
- 11:10Speaker 6: be overdone. Huh, wasn't exactly train sickness.
- 11:14Speaker 5: What was the name of the man you were meeting again?
- 11:16Speaker 6: Why did you say it was a man?
- 11:18Speaker 11: No, this fellow stopped a couple of bullets in the
- 11:22Speaker 11: worst possible place. Are there any good places to stop bullets?
- 11:27Speaker 11: You're not too busy, Templar. When the train pulls in.
- 11:29Speaker 11: Maybe you'd like to climb aboard with me. Take a
- 11:31Speaker 11: look at the fellow I'm talking about.
- 11:33Speaker 6: I might not be too busy. What's his name?
- 11:37Speaker 2: Doyle, Jimmy Doyle.
- 11:48Speaker 6: He didn't improve his appearance the bullets.
- 11:51Speaker 11: I mean, whoever shot him didn't have a beauty treatment
- 11:54Speaker 11: in mind. You know I'm templar.
- 11:56Speaker 6: His name is Doyle, Jimmy Doyle. Isn't that what you
- 11:59Speaker 6: told me?
- 12:00Speaker 4: He fence very nice. When did he die?
- 12:04Speaker 11: Closes? The medical examiner just figured it. He must have
- 12:06Speaker 11: been shot around two or three in the morning.
- 12:09Speaker 6: It's nice to know he dined in a private compartment.
- 12:13Speaker 6: We ever shot him had fun ripping the place up.
- 12:15Speaker 6: He could have been looking for something. Wonder what as
- 12:20Speaker 6: I'm wondering too, Lieutenant, nice to have company. Could have
- 12:24Speaker 6: been diamonds, though Doyle collected them. I hate to tell
- 12:28Speaker 6: you this. When he was a bad boy, he stole em,
- 12:30Speaker 6: oh for shame in Chicago. He and a couple of
- 12:32Speaker 6: other bad boys, one of whom er four glasses. How
- 12:37Speaker 6: do you know that not much of a guest, Lieutenant.
- 12:40Speaker 6: This is what I just picked up off the floor.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Looks like a tiny hunk of crumbled tissue Tomay.
- 12:45Speaker 6: Came out of a sight save a package, Lieutenant. That
- 12:47Speaker 6: tissue was used to wipe a pair of glasses.
- 12:49Speaker 11: Who may have it thanks one of the bad boys
- 12:53Speaker 11: who pitched in on the Chicago deal with Doyle's, a
- 12:55Speaker 11: man named Kerner. The important point of the moment being
- 13:00Speaker 11: wise glasses.
- 13:01Speaker 6: Well, that tissue is mildly flimsy as evidence, but it
- 13:05Speaker 6: helps you are thinking, huh, No, No, nobody heard the Shanes.
- 13:09Speaker 11: When God was killed. Nah, it's noisy on a train.
- 13:12Speaker 11: It may have been going through a tunnel at the time. Well,
- 13:15Speaker 11: it's been fun, Lieutenant, but as it could be even
- 13:18Speaker 11: more fun, templar, Oh, if you would let me introduce
- 13:22Speaker 11: you to Lola, And who is Lola? The kind of
- 13:26Speaker 11: girl your mother wouldn't have liked?
- 13:29Speaker 6: Well, since I'm not my mother, some other time, perhap spa.
- 13:32Speaker 5: It m'd be another time. We're booking your own suspicion
- 13:34Speaker 5: to murder.
- 13:35Speaker 4: She went, glasses, mm hmm.
- 13:37Speaker 5: And the men do make.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Passes being too kind to me.
- 13:41Speaker 5: She and Doyle were lapping up firewater all evening.
- 13:43Speaker 11: She went with him to his compartment this one and
- 13:46Speaker 11: she chatted with him for a while and went to
- 13:48Speaker 11: her own birth. Nobody saw her at the important times
- 13:51Speaker 11: though too bad, it's only suspicion of murder. Well, it's
- 13:55Speaker 11: been chummy with lots of crooks, especially jewel crooks.
- 13:57Speaker 6: Sounds like a case.
- 13:58Speaker 11: The only trouble is whoever knocked off Doyle is after
- 14:02Speaker 11: the diamonds. Lola doesn't have the monor Lucky for Lola.
- 14:07Speaker 6: Did the train stop anyone route?
- 14:09Speaker 11: Jerkwater town named Hainesville too interesting? But I still like
- 14:14Speaker 11: to have you talk to Laura. Why you're pretty and
- 14:17Speaker 11: I am?
- 14:17Speaker 6: Oh, thank you?
- 14:19Speaker 11: You might you might get something out of her. Furthermore,
- 14:22Speaker 11: if you do, I'll stop wondering what brought you here?
- 14:25Speaker 6: Well, that does it. I couldn't bear to think if
- 14:27Speaker 6: you was staying up nights wondering lead me to up.
- 14:30Speaker 11: We're keeping her in compartments. See a couple of doors
- 14:32Speaker 11: down from here, keep her company. We've got to search
- 14:35Speaker 11: everybody on the train.
- 14:36Speaker 6: Aren't you going to introduce me?
- 14:38Speaker 4: Just smile at him.
- 14:40Speaker 6: Oh, I'll do my best.
- 14:41Speaker 11: Well, remember the last guy who was alone with her
- 14:45Speaker 11: wound up dead?
- 14:53Speaker 5: How long that we have to hold up in this room?
- 14:55Speaker 6: That long?
- 14:56Speaker 7: You just be glad you're off of that train. Yeah,
- 14:59Speaker 7: you know, I never we did like cops. But one
- 15:01Speaker 7: thing you gotta give him credit for. They know how
- 15:04Speaker 7: to search a man. For a while back there, I
- 15:06Speaker 7: wasn't sure they were going to leave the skin on me.
- 15:10Speaker 5: Hey, what's the matter, Mitch, I am, I'm wondering where
- 15:13Speaker 5: the stones are?
- 15:14Speaker 7: Kind of yeah, yes, saw am I They weren't in
- 15:16Speaker 7: that compartment. We tore it apart, couldn't find them.
- 15:19Speaker 6: I didn't.
- 15:20Speaker 5: Now, wait a minute, Mitch, you were with me all
- 15:22Speaker 5: the time.
- 15:22Speaker 12: Sure, we got on the train, but according to what
- 15:25Speaker 12: the cops were thrown out as somebody visited Doyle while
- 15:27Speaker 12: you and me split up locating.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Now our birds.
- 15:30Speaker 7: Yeah, but we had to take berths in different cars.
- 15:32Speaker 7: We'd have been spotted too easy if we hadn't.
- 15:34Speaker 12: Sure sure, except with the way it worked out, you
- 15:37Speaker 12: could have got the Doyle's compartment before his body was found.
- 15:40Speaker 6: You could have shut him and ditched the stones something.
- 15:42Speaker 5: Yes, So, my friend, could you would I bring it up?
- 15:44Speaker 5: If I you might?
- 15:45Speaker 7: You might just to make sure that I didn't. I look, Mitch,
- 15:48Speaker 7: there's one thing we know. Neither of us has got
- 15:51Speaker 7: the stones on us now, No matter.
- 15:52Speaker 5: Who killed Doyle.
- 15:54Speaker 6: So, so do you care who killed him?
- 15:56Speaker 4: I care about the stone?
- 15:57Speaker 5: All right, and let's start using our heads. Huh.
- 16:00Speaker 7: Doyle reached the station in Chicago with the stones. We
- 16:03Speaker 7: figured he'd have him with him all the time, but
- 16:05Speaker 7: maybe he arranged to have them reach New.
- 16:07Speaker 5: York separate from himself.
- 16:09Speaker 4: You see.
- 16:10Speaker 13: Yeah, all right, Now I got an idea.
- 16:13Speaker 7: Of where in New York those stones would have to
- 16:15Speaker 7: wind up if that's what Doyle did, And that's where
- 16:19Speaker 7: that's Doyle's home. So why don't we drop in on
- 16:23Speaker 7: missus Doyle and tell her the sad news?
- 16:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, that way, we get a seat on the inside.
- 16:29Speaker 13: Where we said and wait the company.
- 16:41Speaker 6: Evening, Lola, or should it be good morning?
- 16:45Speaker 3: Go away and w everyone should go away and drop dead.
- 16:48Speaker 6: But you haven't even met me. I'm Simon Temple.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Lola, you can drop dead too. Wait, Simon Temple said,
- 16:59Speaker 3: that's all a girl on my condition needs go.
- 17:03Speaker 6: What Lieutenant Flynn told me to smile? I'm smiling.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Doctor West would be proud.
- 17:09Speaker 6: Oh I don't know. He just gives me the brush
- 17:11Speaker 6: every morning.
- 17:14Speaker 3: You're funny to that, thank you, But I'm slow. I
- 17:17Speaker 3: don't want to shake in the train.
- 17:18Speaker 6: I'll be careful.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Oh this train shake awful?
- 17:21Speaker 5: Easy?
- 17:22Speaker 3: Ah, it could be I have a hangover.
- 17:24Speaker 6: Oh were you drinking last night?
- 17:27Speaker 3: I was drinking.
- 17:28Speaker 6: Well, a hangover seems plausible.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Then I can think of a lot better words for
- 17:32Speaker 3: it than that.
- 17:33Speaker 6: For example, yeah, you're in trouble.
- 17:38Speaker 3: What are you doing practicing to be sir Gallahad? Not exactly,
- 17:41Speaker 3: because if you are, you're wasting.
- 17:42Speaker 6: Your time about Doyle.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Don't mention him. I can see his face right now,
- 17:46Speaker 3: have blown up?
- 17:46Speaker 6: That's a really accurate description.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Would you mind leaving me and my hangover all alone?
- 17:54Speaker 6: But according to want you told the police, you lift
- 17:57Speaker 6: him in his compartment alive? Now do you know what
- 18:01Speaker 6: his face look like? Dead?
- 18:03Speaker 3: Get out of here?
- 18:04Speaker 6: That don't much. Did you kill Doyle?
- 18:07Speaker 3: You don't look like my dirry go away?
- 18:09Speaker 5: Did you kill Doyle?
- 18:10Speaker 3: Do you believe me?
- 18:12Speaker 6: I can't tell as yet. You were after his diamonds?
- 18:15Speaker 6: Weren't you were?
- 18:16Speaker 3: It's possible, but I'm not answering that one.
- 18:18Speaker 6: How did you know what his face looked like after
- 18:20Speaker 6: he'd been shot?
- 18:21Speaker 3: All right? You got beyond that? So I didn't spiller
- 18:25Speaker 3: the cops because I figured I didn't have to, all right, not,
- 18:29Speaker 3: it's different. I went with Doyle to his compartment. We
- 18:32Speaker 3: were both kind of on the trunk side, you know
- 18:34Speaker 3: what I mean. Well, anyway, he was drunker than me,
- 18:38Speaker 3: so I I thought maybe I could pick up a few.
- 18:41Speaker 6: Carrots, you know, I think so? Yes, So he walked
- 18:44Speaker 6: into his compartment.
- 18:45Speaker 3: It was dark in there. The first thing that happens
- 18:47Speaker 3: is dog gets shot. Somebody hits me on the head
- 18:50Speaker 3: before I can get a good size scream out.
- 18:52Speaker 6: You didn't see whodwin?
- 18:53Speaker 3: No no. When I came to, I was dead. The
- 18:57Speaker 3: compartment has been turned upside down, and I felt rotten.
- 18:59Speaker 3: If they're fast at lower Birth.
- 19:02Speaker 13: Look just like home.
- 19:04Speaker 6: You could be telling the truth. Lean over.
- 19:09Speaker 3: What are you gonna do out?
- 19:11Speaker 13: Hey?
- 19:11Speaker 6: There is a bruise on your head. One of two things,
- 19:15Speaker 6: either that your story is true or that you were
- 19:17Speaker 6: clever enough to acquire that or by yourself.
- 19:19Speaker 3: It's not the kind of thing I like to go
- 19:21Speaker 3: around acquiring.
- 19:22Speaker 6: I don't know if the police will hold you. I
- 19:25Speaker 6: suspect they won't. If they do release you, i'd advise
- 19:29Speaker 6: you to be very careful. Avoid diamonds. They're beautiful, but
- 19:33Speaker 6: they might be the death of you.
- 19:49Speaker 8: Just a second.
- 19:52Speaker 5: Oh hello, missus Dyer Kerner and Mitch, you mind if
- 19:56Speaker 5: we come in?
- 19:57Speaker 7: You don't mind? She looks all broken up by grief,
- 20:03Speaker 7: don't she, Mitch?
- 20:04Speaker 4: All broken up?
- 20:05Speaker 8: Is that a new routine?
- 20:06Speaker 5: She don't sound like a new widow at all.
- 20:08Speaker 8: Did you say you widow?
- 20:11Speaker 7: Don't tell me you didn't know? Didn't the cops get
- 20:13Speaker 7: in touch with you about what? I guess they didn't.
- 20:16Speaker 7: I guess maybe Doyle didn't bother keeping him posted about
- 20:18Speaker 7: his home address.
- 20:19Speaker 8: Will you tell me what happened?
- 20:21Speaker 3: Please?
- 20:21Speaker 7: Sure somebody took a sudden dislike to your husband, so
- 20:25Speaker 7: you're a widow. When two o'clock this morning he was
- 20:28Speaker 7: on a train. People die on trains too, you said
- 20:31Speaker 7: the police he was murdered, Missus Doyle, He isn't bringing
- 20:34Speaker 7: home the bacon?
- 20:35Speaker 8: Would you mind leaving?
- 20:36Speaker 7: Somebody else may bring it around? We like bacon. I
- 20:39Speaker 7: don't just have to put up with us for a while.
- 20:41Speaker 7: I Mitch, take a look around, see if there's any
- 20:43Speaker 7: other entrance to the apartment.
- 20:45Speaker 9: Okay, what do you want of me?
- 20:47Speaker 7: Mitch and I figure that you're going to have a
- 20:50Speaker 7: visitor soon. We want to be in on the welcoming committee,
- 20:53Speaker 7: and we ought to figure that it should be a
- 20:55Speaker 7: very warm welcome.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Aren't police stations attractive?
- 21:06Speaker 6: Well, they're useful.
- 21:09Speaker 3: I guess I have you to thank for being able
- 21:12Speaker 3: to walk out of there.
- 21:13Speaker 6: No, forget it, unless, of course, you really kill Doyle.
- 21:17Speaker 3: I never kill a man.
- 21:18Speaker 4: Why not?
- 21:19Speaker 3: I like her.
- 21:21Speaker 6: You might like diamonds even more, but I don't. Well,
- 21:26Speaker 6: it's been nice meeting you, Lolla, but I have s.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Remember are you in such a horrid Well.
- 21:31Speaker 6: I've got a special date a widow.
- 21:35Speaker 3: What's so special about a widow?
- 21:37Speaker 6: I just want to see if she's married.
- 21:51Speaker 5: Hey, Karn, Yeah, time's passion and we got lots of it. Actors, Bolton,
- 21:56Speaker 5: all we gotta do.
- 22:01Speaker 6: Across the mass.
- 22:02Speaker 7: You'll be quiet, Okay, we kill the lights and wait
- 22:05Speaker 7: the doors are locked, and after a while, Junior out
- 22:07Speaker 7: there is going to get impatient by the handle and
- 22:10Speaker 7: that the door is open, and walk right and.
- 22:17Speaker 1: The door.
- 22:18Speaker 6: Let me wrestle. Friend, this shouldn't take very long. Mad,
- 22:27Speaker 6: put the lights on. H you had a glass jaw.
- 22:34Speaker 10: Oh S'm so glad, so glad.
- 22:39Speaker 9: When you're riding the bell, I was terrified and when
- 22:42Speaker 9: the door open. You weren't there.
- 22:45Speaker 6: You took too long answering the doorbell. I thought maybe
- 22:47Speaker 6: something might be wrong, so I kicked the door opened
- 22:49Speaker 6: and duck to her side until the firework stopped. This
- 22:53Speaker 6: gentleman with the glasses. No one's going to make passes
- 22:59Speaker 6: at him either except the coroner. He's dead. The other Mitch, yes,
- 23:05Speaker 6: you recover. Colonel was near the door. Mitch fired the
- 23:10Speaker 6: guns lying on the floor near him, and he hit
- 23:12Speaker 6: Colonel instead of me.
- 23:14Speaker 4: A very pleasant error, simon.
- 23:17Speaker 8: They told me, Jimmy, it's dead. He is he was killed,
- 23:22Speaker 8: wasn't he?
- 23:23Speaker 4: Yes?
- 23:24Speaker 6: Why he was carrying a tidy parcel of stolen diamonds.
- 23:28Speaker 6: Colonel and Mitch were trying to remove them from him.
- 23:31Speaker 6: Apparently they'd helped in the original theft.
- 23:35Speaker 8: So they came here to wait for whom Jimmy. They
- 23:41Speaker 8: knew he was dead.
- 23:44Speaker 6: I think you could use a drink, and not a
- 23:45Speaker 6: soft one at that. Where can I find that?
- 23:49Speaker 8: Come on, Jimmy kept everything in that time, door.
- 23:57Speaker 6: Spolted. I'm going to make it easier for our unknown
- 24:02Speaker 6: friend outside, went over to a side madge and passed
- 24:05Speaker 6: the start trying bullets. Hello, Lola, come in and shut
- 24:12Speaker 6: the door behind you. Simon, I'll do it. Then lend
- 24:17Speaker 6: me your bag.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Lola.
- 24:18Speaker 3: You mustn't think I.
- 24:20Speaker 6: Won't till later.
- 24:22Speaker 4: M hm.
- 24:24Speaker 6: No gun, of course not. Oh, you may have your
- 24:27Speaker 6: bag back. You also may have dropped the gun someplace else, Madge.
- 24:33Speaker 6: This is a lady named Lola. Lola missus Doyle.
- 24:36Speaker 8: Who is she?
- 24:37Speaker 4: Sim a girl with a lower berth was.
- 24:39Speaker 6: Straight into the wrong compartment. Let's go into the living.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Room, Simon.
- 24:44Speaker 3: I came here because I was afraid.
- 24:45Speaker 4: For you or for the diamonds.
- 24:48Speaker 3: No, it wasn't that I The objects on the floor
- 24:52Speaker 3: bothering you.
- 24:53Speaker 6: Only one of them is dead, this one, mister Kerner.
- 24:58Speaker 6: Nothing interesting in his pockets. As for Mitch Simon, he
- 25:03Speaker 6: wouldn't have the jewels, let's say he shouldn't have, but
- 25:06Speaker 6: he has.
- 25:08Speaker 8: Look rings, necklace.
- 25:13Speaker 6: Simon, Yes, half a dozen pieces. The only question is
- 25:18Speaker 6: are they the things Doyle was bringing in from Chicago?
- 25:20Speaker 6: Where's your phone made them? Mitch is starting to come
- 25:31Speaker 6: to one of you had better take that gun't hello,
- 25:34Speaker 6: Lieutenant Flint point that gun at Mitch if he acts up.
- 25:38Speaker 6: Don't be delicate.
- 25:41Speaker 9: When I think of how he made Jimmy look at.
- 25:44Speaker 6: Flynn, Simon Templar, would you mind reading off a list
- 25:49Speaker 6: of the stolen joels Doyle who was supposed to have
- 25:51Speaker 6: on him? That's right now? Mm hmm fine, Oh no, lieutenant,
- 25:59Speaker 6: not intellectual curiosity. You see, I have executed those jewels
- 26:03Speaker 6: with me, not to mention the corpse and the killer.
- 26:06Speaker 6: The address is forty nine Marble Avenue, Apartment C H
- 26:10Speaker 6: and oh uh, lieutenant, don't hurry. I'm having fun.
- 26:15Speaker 8: The jewels you found on Mitchell.
- 26:17Speaker 6: Are part of a Chicago loot. Yes, only one thing
- 26:20Speaker 6: bothers me. What's that man? Mitch couldn't have shot Coloner
- 26:25Speaker 6: the angles rather the angle? Yes? Besides, why should either
- 26:29Speaker 6: of them have their started shooting? They didn't know who
- 26:31Speaker 6: would be coming through the door, Simon.
- 26:34Speaker 10: I didn't want to get involved, but eye shot Kerner.
- 26:39Speaker 10: Mitch was holding his hand over my mouth. I had
- 26:41Speaker 10: a hand free. I didn't want them to.
- 26:43Speaker 9: Kill you, Simon.
- 26:44Speaker 6: We're in a unanimous agreement on that. As for Lola,
- 26:49Speaker 6: I don't like the way you're looking at me. Oh
- 26:53Speaker 6: you imagine standing side by side a very pretty picture.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Now, talk to me about pictures. They got frames around them.
- 27:00Speaker 3: You just said the stuff you found on Mitch's part
- 27:02Speaker 3: of the stuff Doyle had with him on the train.
- 27:04Speaker 3: That's right, Well, that proves Mitch killed Door and stole
- 27:06Speaker 3: the diamond.
- 27:07Speaker 6: No, it merely proves that the diamonds were not on
- 27:11Speaker 6: the train.
- 27:12Speaker 3: Look, I never even got through high school. For me,
- 27:15Speaker 3: you have to make it a lot.
- 27:16Speaker 6: Simply, I'll be glad to everyone who walked off the
- 27:19Speaker 6: train this morning was thoroughly searched. No one could have
- 27:22Speaker 6: got away with the jewels. Therefore, that jewels went on
- 27:25Speaker 6: the train, not when it reached New York.
- 27:27Speaker 8: It is I think I know what you mean, Simon.
- 27:30Speaker 6: Yes, probably because you'll go through high school, manage, Hiever.
- 27:35Speaker 6: Where does that leave us? It leaves us with a start.
- 27:38Speaker 6: The train made at around two o'clock in the morning
- 27:40Speaker 6: at a small town named Haynesville.
- 27:42Speaker 3: I remember that that's where Colonel and Mitch got on.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Doyle tall them he got scared, So that means they
- 27:48Speaker 3: gotta be the ones who killed him.
- 27:49Speaker 6: It uer means something else, Lola. It means that other
- 27:54Speaker 6: people could have got on the train at Haynesville too.
- 27:56Speaker 10: You mean someone else is involved, someone we don't know about. No,
- 28:00Speaker 10: then you'd have searched these other people you mentioned in
- 28:04Speaker 10: New York.
- 28:05Speaker 6: The star over at Haynesville was some how long, Lola.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Ten minutes they switch engines.
- 28:11Speaker 6: Which means that someone could have got aboard the train,
- 28:13Speaker 6: shot Doyle, taken the diamonds, and then got off the
- 28:16Speaker 6: train at Haines Dowl.
- 28:18Speaker 8: But who could have done that?
- 28:20Speaker 9: Simon, you madge, that's ridiculous.
- 28:24Speaker 6: You saw me at midnight, did a very pretty song
- 28:27Speaker 6: and dance, and then left. You then took a plane
- 28:29Speaker 6: to Haynesville, met the train and your husband there, killed him,
- 28:32Speaker 6: and flew back to New York.
- 28:33Speaker 4: No, it'll be easy to trace the plane.
- 28:36Speaker 10: Madge, anyone thinks of it. I have what makes you
- 28:39Speaker 10: think I'll let you pass those thoughts on?
- 28:41Speaker 6: You won't be able to help yourself. True, you've a gun,
- 28:45Speaker 6: but you've already killed two men. Lola doesn't approve of
- 28:50Speaker 6: killing men. Lola, I got it.
- 28:52Speaker 8: Simon.
- 28:55Speaker 6: You better let me have that gun, thank you. You
- 28:59Speaker 6: better so that a jurymage, because you'll be seeing one.
- 29:13Speaker 2: You have been listening to another transcribed adventure of the
- 29:16Speaker 2: Saint the robin Hood of Modern Crime, And now here
- 29:20Speaker 2: is our star, Tom Conway.
- 29:23Speaker 6: Ladies and gentlemen, Democracy demands an active faith, a dynamics
- 29:29Speaker 6: struggle against the fanatics who would destroy our national unity
- 29:33Speaker 6: with a poison of prejudice. We must protect ourselves and
- 29:38Speaker 6: our families against prejudice by accepting or rejecting people on
- 29:43Speaker 6: their individual wealth, by refusing to listen to or spread
- 29:48Speaker 6: rumors against a race or religion, by speaking up wherever
- 29:52Speaker 6: we are against prejudice, and for understanding. Remember, freedom and
- 29:59Speaker 6: prejudic cannot exist side by side. If we choose freedom,
- 30:05Speaker 6: we must fight prechardice. This is Tom Conway inviting you
- 30:10Speaker 6: to join us again next week at the same time
- 30:12Speaker 6: for another exciting adventure of the Saint good Night.
- 30:44Speaker 2: The script of The Saint was written by Lewis Betties.
- 30:47Speaker 2: In our cast, you heard Gloria Blondell as Lola and
- 30:50Speaker 2: Joyce McCluskey as Madge. Paul Richards and Peter Leeds played
- 30:53Speaker 2: Kerner and Mitch Shepherd Mancin was Doyle and Ken Christy
- 30:57Speaker 2: Lieutenant Flynn, based on characters created by Leslie Chitteris is

- 32:04Speaker 14: Be sure that you're done and write like the very
- 32:08Speaker 14: best medio Morning, Noon and Night is from this station, Morning, Noon,
- 32:14Speaker 14: and Night MBC.
- 32:18Speaker 5: This is NBC, the National Broadcasting Company.
- 32:32Speaker 3: This is Andrew J.
- 32:33Speaker 11: Graham, author of the web surface series Oh and a
- 32:36Speaker 11: Man and his Wife.
- 32:37Speaker 12: You're listening to the great Detectives of Old Time.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Radio, Welcome Back.
- 32:48Speaker 1: I really did like uh Glory Blonde Doll in this episode.
- 32:54Speaker 1: She was very solid. I wish I could uh say
- 32:58Speaker 1: the same for Tom kawn Way. While I'm trying to
- 33:01Speaker 1: do my best not to actively compare him to Vincent Price,
- 33:06Speaker 1: it feels like his performance was a little bit mailed
- 33:09Speaker 1: in on this one. I also have to confess when
- 33:12Speaker 1: I heard Don Rickles the name at the end, I
- 33:15Speaker 1: had to go and look it up. I don't know
- 33:17Speaker 1: if I have mentioned this before, but I did find
- 33:24Speaker 1: out there is actually another Don Rickles is definitely not
- 33:28Speaker 1: the comedian, but was a radio announcer who lived from
- 33:33Speaker 1: nineteen twenty seven to eighty five, and also announced the
- 33:38Speaker 1: Great Guilder Sleeve, Knots Beat, and NBC University Theater on
- 33:44Speaker 1: the air, and did a lot of work over television
- 33:47Speaker 1: and also doing a lot of work in the Los
- 33:52Speaker 1: Angeles area, including as a news anchor for KMBC. All right, well,
- 34:00Speaker 1: before we get into listener comments and feedback, I do
- 34:03Speaker 1: want to mention the various rewards we do have at
- 34:07Speaker 1: the Patreon campaign. At the Rookie level, which is two
- 34:12Speaker 1: dollars a month, we'll thank you and acknowledge you on
- 34:15Speaker 1: the program. Then at the four dollars a month level,
- 34:18Speaker 1: we have the Shamas level, where we'll send you access
- 34:22Speaker 1: to our Premium sign Then we have our Detective Sergeant level,
- 34:27Speaker 1: which is with a donation of seven dollars and fourteen
- 34:31Speaker 1: cents or more per month, you get early access to
- 34:34Speaker 1: the episodes before they're recorded, so you can email comments
- 34:40Speaker 1: on an episode and have them read on that program
- 34:44Speaker 1: as long as you email me before the recording date.
- 34:48Speaker 1: You also get your choice of one of the ebooks
- 34:51Speaker 1: that we offer when you join, and then every six
- 34:56Speaker 1: months thereafter, at the Master Detective level, which is fifteen dollars,
- 35:01Speaker 1: a month obviously named in honor of Nick Carter. You
- 35:07Speaker 1: not only get everything in the Detective Sergeant package, but
- 35:11Speaker 1: you also get early access to my unrecorded commentaries, and
- 35:17Speaker 1: you also get to listen to all the public domain
- 35:21Speaker 1: radio programs that I'm going to be listening to in
- 35:24Speaker 1: a given week, including comedies, dramas, and adventure stories. Also
- 35:29Speaker 1: provide a list of non public domain shows that I
- 35:32Speaker 1: listen to, as well as movies and TV shows for
- 35:36Speaker 1: those who are you really curious, and you'll receive a
- 35:39Speaker 1: full access to an archive of my current ebooks as
- 35:43Speaker 1: PDF documents, and you'll get access to all new ebooks,
- 35:50Speaker 1: and that's all included as part of being a Master Detective.
- 35:53Speaker 1: In addition, every six months, you'll receive one colonial radio
- 35:58Speaker 1: theater audio drama from our list of approved selections every
- 36:02Speaker 1: six months. Then we have what we call the Radio
- 36:07Speaker 1: Operator Spot. You get everything that comes with being a
- 36:10Speaker 1: Master Detective, but you also can record a short bumper.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Andrew Rohns was putting those in the episodes to illustrate
- 36:20Speaker 1: that would play just as we're returning after the program.
- 36:24Speaker 1: And that is also a way if you want to
- 36:26Speaker 1: advertise in some way with just a brief mention of
- 36:28Speaker 1: your website full details our Patreon dot Great Detectives dot net.
- 36:32Speaker 1: And then we have the Chief of Detectives level, which,
- 36:37Speaker 1: in addition to the benefits of Master Detective, you can
- 36:40Speaker 1: get a free se a sign paperback copies of any
- 36:44Speaker 1: currently published novels that I've written that you'd lock, and
- 36:48Speaker 1: then you'd also get free sign copies of any future
- 36:53Speaker 1: books again at your request. You also can record and
- 36:58Speaker 1: add for a family friendly business that would air after
- 37:01Speaker 1: my commentary that could be about two minutes, and all
- 37:05Speaker 1: that subject to host approval. No ads for financial services permitted.
- 37:11Speaker 1: And you also can nominate a public domain radio program
- 37:21Speaker 1: of any genre to be played on the podcast as
- 37:25Speaker 1: a special all that subject to host approval and fold.
- 37:30Speaker 1: And you also will receive one BBC Audio drama download
- 37:35Speaker 1: of a single program. So by that I mean we
- 37:39Speaker 1: could send you the audio drama Fellowship of the Ring,
- 37:43Speaker 1: but not the entire season of Yes Minister, because that's
- 37:47Speaker 1: a little bit more expensive. And you do also get
- 37:50Speaker 1: to play a part if we do reach that three
- 37:52Speaker 1: thousand dollars level in choosing a new series, and the
- 37:55Speaker 1: Commissioner level you get all the benefits of Chief of Detectives.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Plus you can choose a commissioner special every quarter to
- 38:06Speaker 1: be played during the series, and that is the commissioner
- 38:13Speaker 1: special is still subject to host approval, and you get
- 38:15Speaker 1: two votes on the new series. And I will be
- 38:18Speaker 1: honest that the commissioner level is something I adapted from
- 38:21Speaker 1: another program. So if I don't actually get anyone to
- 38:25Speaker 1: take that level and there's only one spot available, I
- 38:28Speaker 1: will probably discontinue it after this listener support campaign full
- 38:32Speaker 1: Detailspatreon dot Great Detectives dot net. All right, well, finally
- 38:36Speaker 1: we do get into listener comments and feedback, and a
- 38:39Speaker 1: lot of people sad to see Vincent Price leaving, and
- 38:42Speaker 1: so many really enjoyed his performance. Brian writes, really going
- 38:47Speaker 1: to miss that wonderful voice. Timothy says, I'm sorry to
- 38:51Speaker 1: see him go. It has been enjoyable listening to him.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Bobby Lee says, if you remember, I did not care
- 38:58Speaker 1: for the show in the beginning. I was a die
- 39:00Speaker 1: hard Johnny Dollar fan and did not like any other shows.
- 39:03Speaker 1: I'm glad I gave him a chance. I hate to
- 39:05Speaker 1: see it in and Matt simply says, goodbye, Vincent. Indeed,
- 39:10Speaker 1: he had a definite legacy and it really did a
- 39:14Speaker 1: great job as the Saint. And the only thing to
- 39:17Speaker 1: note is there are a lot of lost episodes of
- 39:20Speaker 1: his performances of the say and while it's not terribly
- 39:24Speaker 1: likely that many from the Mutual era or the CBS
- 39:29Speaker 1: Radio era will show up, there's still a chance that
- 39:33Speaker 1: we may get to hear more lost episodes. If any
- 39:36Speaker 1: of those do come up and I'm available and I
- 39:38Speaker 1: can play, then we'll certainly revisit this series. All right, Well,
- 39:42Speaker 1: that will do it for today. If you do have
- 39:44Speaker 1: a comment, send it to me Box thirteen at Great
