- 0:42A hamster with a blunt penknife. The Doctor Who commentary
- 0:45podcast. Now, I'm figure.
- 0:48We could talk about. We could just leave and talk
- 0:53about something else or else. We could fucked already know
- 1:05what I was saying. Again, by five start again,
- 1:15three to go. Welcome back to a hamster with a
- 1:19blunt penknife the Doctor Who commentary podcast.
- 1:22We're back to talk about the Satan pit or we could just
- 1:25leave. What do you think, boys?
- 1:29Ha ha, ha! No!
- 1:36Well, when we left it, the Beast was busy.
- 1:39Saying and that's we're gonna find out.
- 1:42Everyone's deepest darkest secret.
- 1:45So, this is just another episode of hamster.
- 1:47Really isn't it? Yeah, I'll bet you two have some
- 1:51very deep, very dark secrets. Oh, you're both gone quiet.
- 2:04Now, for the, for the benefit of the audience listening, we may
- 2:08have the odds. Growl or bark from phrases
- 2:12cute-as-a-button dog. That's in his lap right now and
- 2:15he is a full participant in this episode of had stuff.
- 2:18She I'll let sorry. Sorry I've got the sex role.
- 2:24Well gentlemen, how do we fill this story is progressing to
- 2:28date? It's been good.
- 2:33Like I said, a really interesting character driven,
- 2:39you know, tense atmospheric so far.
- 2:42And my biggest quibble has been resolved that the doctor and
- 2:47Rose been together. Doctrine was been together
- 2:50because very cleverly, the doctor has now been separated
- 2:54from yours and sent down the pit, but certain don't tip it.
- 3:00On his own. Where do we Market the Rowdy?
- 3:02All right, well, I've hardly got strength to pick up to Toby.
- 3:17So thank you for joining us. Thank you very much.
- 3:30Judgment. But when Toby's heads around,
- 3:32anyway, we pop headfirst into the site.
- 3:35Stop it. I gotta stop it.
- 3:39Yes. Well, he's got, he's got a lot
- 3:43more stuff yet so I, you know, it has mmm.
- 3:50So are we ready to head into the say?
- 3:51Yes, it is ready. As I'm ever gonna be.
- 3:54Okay. I was like, how does it go on
- 3:57then? Yeah just for a change gon do
- 3:59much. Sank, quatre trois Deux, uh, go.
- 4:09Okay. You know, we didn't talk about
- 4:11the CGI for the sanctuary base, which I think is actually dated,
- 4:15but actually still looks pretty good.
- 4:19Yeah, it's lots of ways. It's very similar to the Bowie
- 4:25base. One in waters of Mars, isn't it?
- 4:28It's a flat-pack base sort of put together nicely.
- 4:33Well, I think yet those seams are just on screen, just long
- 4:36enough to convince you, and that's fine.
- 4:38That's what you want your CGI to do, and that is kind of how they
- 4:41would do. It though, isn't it?
- 4:42If they evolved into these far-off missions, take a
- 4:45flat-pack base that they would build up, it makes perfect
- 4:49sense. Yeah, I like the fact that, you
- 4:51know, a whole segment of the base went under when the
- 4:55earthquake when you know and thus we have a William Hartnell
- 4:59story where they're cut off from the Tardis.
- 5:01It's we could offer the ship might have.
- 5:06This is a long reprise it, isn't it?
- 5:11So I that is open and I am free. Whoa, It's chilling.
- 5:21Gave Little Wolf plays it as brilliantly as he plays suit
- 5:25explicitly. So just you know I'm not as much
- 5:28opportunity here is he wasn't to take.
- 5:31No, I don't think you quite well.
- 5:33No actually I've become wrong now.
- 5:35I think he does because you don't actually see him at all.
- 5:39So it's all. Voice work, but some of the
- 5:42content that he gets to deliver that we've had at the end of the
- 5:46last episode. So the seam of mr.
- 5:47Jefferson. And then the scene where he's
- 5:51sort of taunting each of the people about their secrets.
- 5:54That's really, really good. If you had a poor vocal
- 5:57performance, delivering those lines.
- 5:59Yeah, you need someone with real gravitas and they've got it and
- 6:04I always talk about the line about mr.
- 6:06Jefferson but actually there's just like one after another is.
- 6:09It was what do they say? Danny, I can't remember this
- 6:13specific lines. That will this coming up in a
- 6:15minute? So we'll have a look.
- 6:17But we have little bit about their backstory that just is
- 6:20there, and the girl who's going to die.
- 6:22Some sort of that's all gathering in it.
- 6:25The first instance of and how many times have they done that
- 6:28since while they're still doing it?
- 6:30Now on them? You will die soon.
- 6:35I shall quite like that in the bank was, you know, we're so she
- 6:37won't. Oh, oh, There was a voice.
- 6:42Don't look around appraiser. We thought you'd vanished.
- 6:44I was on the racers carry on the floor.
- 6:49Yeah, absolutely. On the floor, trying to get the
- 6:51dog so blessed, but hey, I'm here em.
- 6:56So thing I wanted to see about the splitting of the doctor.
- 7:03And Rose is what happens is, we'll get something with David
- 7:06Tennant, which is very Davison and we get the doctor with the
- 7:13older female companion. Yes he works.
- 7:20It really works because the doctor and Ida make a much more
- 7:25compelling and interesting pairing in this story for me
- 7:28than the doctor and Rose do. He's so much partner with her
- 7:32was odd about those scenes, is they are extended dialogue
- 7:36scenes and you don't get a lot of those in the new series
- 7:39because usually we're squashed into 45 minutes.
- 7:43So you get character moments that it If they get a, like, a
- 7:4623 minutes, scene of all talking about religion and faith, in the
- 7:52universe, her personal religion, the religion of Gallifrey, like
- 7:55it's probably intelligent character drama.
- 7:59It is. One of the thing that I really
- 8:02loved was a scene towards the end of Impossible Planet, where
- 8:06the doctor is doing. He's Hall, you know, pop
- 8:11culture, shtick. And is it go?
- 8:13Why did you have to say that? It's Say no, this is the best
- 8:16Christmas ball thuds. Ever going to have in.
- 8:19She just turns it on and says are you quite finished?
- 8:22Ha ha ha. You just she's having none of
- 8:24it. Exactly.
- 8:25It's just so it's just such a much nicer, take that make than
- 8:31than Rose and the doctor simple enough to each other.
- 8:35So I really love all these scenes with Ida.
- 8:37And in the doctor, I love the way, just there, she turns her
- 8:40Communicator off. So she doesn't have to go back
- 8:43because she wants to explore. Or and of course the doctor is
- 8:47going to love that because he would do exactly the same in
- 8:50that situation. So they've got a kind of
- 8:52kindred's lover curiosity We haven't really had a companion
- 8:59like this, have we in the new series I'm an older more for
- 9:06sort of company. They've all been younger or
- 9:08something they hop from Graham. And Dan part from grave, but G,
- 9:13there's like a naivety about grandmas in.
- 9:15And yeah, things are wiseness with him, but he's experiencing
- 9:19everything fresh. Whereas, if you had a character
- 9:20like Ida going around, like she's kind of like Universe,
- 9:25Savvy, isn't she? I think it would be quite nice
- 9:28to have a companion like that. It's a really interesting
- 9:31Dynamic and I do like the fact, what's her name?
- 9:35Claire Rush Brooke. She was on that weakest link
- 9:39special and I love the fact that she was proper.
- 9:42Like, pioneering the show at the foot fetish just is one
- 9:45appearance that she was in. Which is really, really nice.
- 9:49Do you know the line that gets me?
- 9:51Is when? And if I really annoyed me back
- 9:53in the day, I thought I was just such an obvious thing, but now
- 9:58I'm a little more world-weary, is when she says, oh, what what
- 10:03is that? What is the devil in that
- 10:06culture in that religion? She says, oh, the things that
- 10:08men do well since between watching this then and now, I
- 10:14know there are some terrible things that men do, and it's a
- 10:17line that just has As an awful lot of meaning and it means
- 10:20something different to every single member of the audience.
- 10:22I think, is a great line. Yeah.
- 10:25It's got a kind of universe, see ality to it.
- 10:29Then everyone from read some. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:33Look at that. But yeah, but everyone can read
- 10:36their own thing into it, which makes it makes it something
- 10:40something really, really good. It's a lovely piece of writing
- 10:44Fraser. Joe, I've got a question for you
- 10:47then. Go on.
- 10:48What is it? You like about Rose in this
- 10:50episode. Let's guess you've a positive
- 10:51reading on Earth. Hi.
- 10:53I like that. Rule was becomes the doctor.
- 10:56Yeah, she is. It's a very short horns of name
- 11:00on thing. Where, you know, the doctor is
- 11:03separated from the companion, down the pit.
- 11:05So the companion is the one that has to drive the story forward.
- 11:09So, you know, we've already seen here roses is kind of saved.
- 11:16It will be from being executed by Jefferson and will then see
- 11:20rules completely take charge of the situation now.
- 11:23Got terms like where you cross flame is cooking these little
- 11:26cupboard. You know, she's the one that
- 11:28takes charge, she's the one that starts dishing out jobs for
- 11:32people in. You're going to do this and
- 11:33you're going to do your then she drives them through the air,
- 11:36ducts to get to food sent Roland incapacity lose, that's that all
- 11:42her doing. So it's a brilliant story for As
- 11:45in as much as she gets a lot to do in this episode, the previous
- 11:49episode when she's with the doctor who is when I really
- 11:51don't like it and they have that Dynamic but as soon as they
- 11:54separate them, both of them really become something new and
- 11:59different and much more enjoyable for me as interesting
- 12:03because rose and a timestamp feature much in love and
- 12:05monsters. But then in fear her again, the
- 12:07doctors taking out the action halfway through and she's the
- 12:12doctor in that as well as in, she figuring out the solution.
- 12:15In there with the ax. I think the idea is in this
- 12:18episode and that is that it's giving that scene between Jackie
- 12:23and Rose in Army of Ghosts. When she says, I don't even
- 12:25recognize you anymore. You're getting more and more
- 12:27like him. It gives it a bit of weight
- 12:30because we've seen we've, you know, we've seen her taken on
- 12:32that role. And when she comes back in the
- 12:37stolen Earth, she's basically the doctor isn't she.
- 12:39She's taking charge, you know, she's got a gun.
- 12:43She's not scared of anybody. She's chambliss.
- 12:46You just lie in turn left. Brilliant, I think.
- 12:49Yeah. Here's your red eye dude.
- 12:54Sorry. But can't find your terrifying.
- 12:56Yeah, so terrified, my nephew. So, this is the thing, that's in
- 13:02it. Where we hear the backstory is
- 13:04that right? Yes.
- 13:07Yeah, so so it's about when the Beast was was trapped and the
- 13:12doctor can't accept that it was before time.
- 13:15He can't accept that as a concept, which is really, that's
- 13:18really nice character beat for the doctor because he has things
- 13:22that he believes in and he believes, isn't he?
- 13:25Yeah, exactly. And it's a nice little little
- 13:28moment for him. And David Tennant, plays that
- 13:31really well. And I really like David
- 13:33Tennant's performance in this episode a lot more.
- 13:37Than the previous episode. Because he's very calm and he's
- 13:40very still, and he's very thoughtful.
- 13:44And I like that aspect of his performance a lot.
- 13:48We don't get that an awful lot. We don't get time to get that an
- 13:53awful lot, because usually he's running and doing Exposition and
- 13:57running for his life. And and and and and he's
- 14:00rattling off the lines at 1,000 miles an hour.
- 14:04I love the fact that you know what you just said there.
- 14:07About let him not being able to accept it before time and he
- 14:12actually gives a rationale as to potentially why he keeps
- 14:15traveling. And that is to basically find
- 14:20alternatives to his worldview, you know.
- 14:22And I think that's really, really interesting for them to a
- 14:25motivation for him, continuing to travel Universe to see things
- 14:29that contradict his view of the Universe.
- 14:33I like this scene as well. This goes back to something.
- 14:36We saw in episode add one that we didn't didn't talk about
- 14:39about all the moments where the crew all panic and they're all
- 14:43talking over each other, like you would in a situation of
- 14:46they're not, it's not unnatural istic B, where you're waiting
- 14:50for someone to talk and then you're talking and then you're
- 14:52adding to it, they're all babbling over each other until
- 14:55someone tells them to stop. That's how you know, it's
- 14:58podcast is live, you know, because that's what we do all
- 15:00the time. Exactly just babbling on all
- 15:04over each other. I do think that this, but now,
- 15:09with the doctor, You know, go down but are using its.
- 15:16It doesn't land for me. It feels very much like the
- 15:18trying to give him a parking space moment.
- 15:23Oh, is this the one you talking about sorry?
- 15:25No, no. Actually, that wasn't the arcing
- 15:27space moment. I was going to talk about.
- 15:29I have another arcade space moment to come.
- 15:32Yeah. I think you guys are way Kinder.
- 15:36When Matt Smith gets those moments and he gets just as many
- 15:39moments where he's going, are you?
- 15:40Even being zero Matt? Yeah.
- 15:42He gets just as many moments like this.
- 15:44And yeah, I think you just prefer the style of performers
- 15:47when they asked me, if does it? Yes, I think I prefer the style
- 15:50performance but also prefer Steven Moffat writing I think
- 15:55Steven Moffat can give his coat as better words than Russell.
- 15:58T, Davies gone and we often thought you were insane but
- 16:00never more of those tenants horror as well.
- 16:04Sorry, although do you think he's hard?
- 16:06Matt Smith. Sorry.
- 16:07Oh no, Matt, Matt definitely leave it.
- 16:10I will go with. I'm gonna be all girls hair
- 16:11then. You know, when that cord goes
- 16:18flying down the shaft there, cut them off.
- 16:21That's that's that's basically a narrative.
- 16:23Thread being cut, isn't it, right?
- 16:25You ain't going back up there. You know, you've been thinking
- 16:29about that. One of you.
- 16:31Obviously, do not for a while. Finally, that gets to fucking do
- 16:35something. It's like, yes, he's there with
- 16:38his gum. Now, he's running about it.
- 16:41Oh no. He opens doors.
- 16:42Doesn't he for a bit? He does.
- 16:43Yeah, you push his buttons? Yeah, I think we're good.
- 16:47He's like Jeopardy buttons. We're gonna see some of the
- 16:50sexiest ventilation shafts ever in docto in a bit.
- 16:53Huh, they really well-lit, I think, you know.
- 16:55Yeah. There we go.
- 16:58So, here's Rose taking her doctor moment.
- 17:02Talking to them, giving them the making them, think making them
- 17:07react, making them do something. So, do you wish we'd had a bit
- 17:12more of this in season two that series to?
- 17:14Yeah, I liked it, I liked this part of rows, where she can
- 17:17because she can be inspirational and she can take charge, and
- 17:21she's done that from Rose. And here's my Arkin space
- 17:24moment, because the shuttlecraft has got the power.
- 17:29That's independent, from the rest of the base, but they use
- 17:34yet. And then they all go into a
- 17:36ventilation, shaft just note insects in about just the, you
- 17:42know, Well that's a goodie that's a goodie reference.
- 17:48These feels very classic who this story.
- 17:50This episodes. I think this is a big maybe.
- 17:52This is why I like it so much this and like things like Forest
- 17:59of the dead and silence in the library that feels very classic
- 18:01Who admits he's very popular stories.
- 18:04I think lean into What? You know what we're used to, and
- 18:09what we like, For a moment, I thought you'd said in the forest
- 18:16of the night and I was just going to pull you up on that
- 18:20now, y'all get on Fraser. We can say, yeah, I've got a
- 18:24question for you, two guys. Then is Russell T Davies?
- 18:28A religious man. No not so and he says that in
- 18:32interviews, but he believes in faith in whatever form it takes
- 18:38and that's why in gridlock, he has characters have faith.
- 18:43In. They have their own religion,
- 18:46but it's completely sort of non-secular.
- 18:49It's not religion as you would accept it.
- 18:52So, no, I think he believes in faith.
- 18:56I think it's clear from the end of the world onwards where he
- 18:59says and the use of religion is banned on on the space station,
- 19:06isn't it? So I think he sort of sets is
- 19:08still there. I think he likes the power that
- 19:11faith has to bring you together whether Be faith in in a concept
- 19:16or the doctor, or whatever. But I don't think he has a
- 19:21Christian faith for a religious faith of any kind, but I think
- 19:26he does, if he portrays a character with faith with a
- 19:31religion, he doesn't judge those characters know.
- 19:34So he has that character as you know, as kind of authentic as
- 19:39they can possibly be, but he doesn't have the story judge
- 19:42those characters and I think Think that's how you should
- 19:44write. It does.
- 19:47Like tuna doctor introduces though?
- 19:50Well yes he does, he does. Hmm.
- 19:53In fact, Daniel know I gave a fabulous reading on that, you
- 19:55know, one of these episodes and a very positive one to, which I
- 19:59found quite refreshing because, all right, I found it agonizing
- 20:03when he's off floating with angels and things like that, you
- 20:05know? But yeah.
- 20:10Speaking of Daniel night, he did reply to my tweet asking for
- 20:15opinions on this story. Okay, for work.
- 20:18Excellent segue. So he says, who has to go t.
- 20:23This is one of the scariest Pooh stories, spoke by some
- 20:26nothingness, the scene where the doctor wants to hug Zach.
- 20:35Yeah, but I wouldn't have to the hog.
- 20:38They've attended to count with us.
- 20:40Have we have deer? Ready at humidors worse?
- 20:44Who says? Oh, I like that bit.
- 20:50Dave also says, a really scary story with super music.
- 20:53Great acting performances, and probably the best devil
- 20:56realization I've ever seen coming up.
- 20:59I thought moment with the right and appearing.
- 21:01I bet scared the crap out of people and who doesn't love a
- 21:05nude? Yeah, because we talked to over
- 21:07the bit where Toby that the writing goes from the piece of
- 21:13pottery to Toby's face and it's a very simple It's cool effects.
- 21:18Yeah, effective for it. Yeah, that is the great moment
- 21:22is that where he looks down at his hands and you're expecting
- 21:25it to be on the top of his hands and you have that moment of
- 21:29relief and then he turns his hands over and the scriptures on
- 21:32his hat on on his palms. It's so simple but it's so
- 21:37effective. It's a little jump scare at that
- 21:39moment and even though you know it's coming but it just eats it
- 21:43out, just enough to bring the tension, you must have however,
- 21:46was just sort of a little Lil Bit off in this like from the
- 21:48Star where you have that language that the Tardis can't
- 21:51translate. I think that's a nice novel
- 21:53concept as well. And he has to figure out,
- 21:57doesn't he? When he goes down?
- 21:59He has to figure out the Trap that was set for the devil down.
- 22:04Yeah so the doctor has to be smart.
- 22:06Yeah, yeah. It's lovely.
- 22:13And you know, I think you know why we're going to lose some
- 22:16people along the way here, like that.
- 22:17That's definitely who's it gonna be.
- 22:21It's mr. Jefferson.
- 22:21Sorry spoiler I think that's the moment that, you know, you said
- 22:25earlier that you weren't that Keen on it.
- 22:28But That my my he rescues himself.
- 22:32Yeah, he's redeemed at the ends because he's a man who's very
- 22:39Jobsworth he does his, he's there to do his job, and he will
- 22:43do it to the letter of the rules.
- 22:47Right. Up to the end gentlemen, I have
- 22:50a question for both of you. Can you can you think of any
- 22:56sexier or on par ventilation shafts than these?
- 23:03For example. Oh praise the first.
- 23:10Is this what we've come down? Do sexy ventilation shafts.
- 23:15Yeah, euphemism Fraser, I think. Well, okay, if, if we're going
- 23:22to talk about this, then the Triangular ones in the Arkin
- 23:25space, that Sarah James reverses are pretty damn cool as
- 23:30ventilation shafts. Go about the ones in Genesis of
- 23:33the Daleks that they crawl up a pretty nice as well.
- 23:37They're quite like, these ones. Yeah, the worst ones are the
- 23:39ones in power of Kroll. This is my.com, but this does
- 23:48have a nice like claustrophobia to it, doesn't it?
- 23:52Yes, I wondered if they're reused for the death of the
- 23:57doctor, when you've got the scenes with Clyde and Ronnie and
- 24:03me in in the ventilation ducts. Yeah, they do like that.
- 24:08And it's again, they're thinking realistically about about the
- 24:11location in that you have to create an air pocket for each
- 24:15section before you can go which call creates the suspense
- 24:19because they've got to wait for the doors are open and the odor
- 24:22scuttling along. And yeah it's a reminds me of
- 24:27the scenes and Dalek where Rose is running and you're watching
- 24:31it on the screen and you're watching the progress and that's
- 24:34a really good way of ramping up the tension because you're
- 24:37watching it happen and you're there with the characters for
- 24:41Are they going to get other going to get that other going to
- 24:43make it other going to make it? And it all has the same
- 24:45character beat, doesn't it where mr.
- 24:49Jefferson says like rose says, oh, I wasn't quick enough.
- 24:53Yeah. At the moment hits as well.
- 25:00I just I think the moment where he'd have more than one where
- 25:03everyone dies in this story I think He is like I think they're
- 25:08all great Powers. Yeah, that's it.
- 25:10It's you don't every You know, death is it's about meaningful
- 25:16is perhaps not the word, but it's felt it's you know, it's
- 25:20not just doesn't just happen in the dwell on it.
- 25:23You know, we will have Scooby's death where the find a body and
- 25:28either, you know, talks about, you know, she's only 20 years
- 25:31old and then Jefferson gives that that pool meeting.
- 25:34We have Jefferson, you know, who is has that conversation with
- 25:41with Zachary in. You know, asks for the are to be
- 25:45turned off. So he has bit more control over
- 25:48what happens with them, you know, these could have just been
- 25:51flash in the pan or the gone move on.
- 25:53But the fact that they've spent the time, I also, the spent, the
- 25:58time to give us, You a few minutes with each person as the,
- 26:05as the dye really adds to the World, building the character
- 26:10building, which is the main strength, or one of the main
- 26:13strengths of this. But don't you think that again?
- 26:16Is it like another one of those moments that would hits an adult
- 26:20more than a child because it's a person basically saying, will
- 26:23you kill me faster? I don't get that.
- 26:26I want to choose to die, like that's stuff.
- 26:29I think that's chilling. Yeah, it's Emotional is what it
- 26:37is, it's and Danny Webb plays, it really, really well.
- 26:42It's, I think that moment nest of Russell to, you know, is that
- 26:46he does Infuse, real sentiment, as sometimes over sentiment, I
- 26:50know, but real sentiment into his stories and usually there's
- 26:53a moment in every single episode that really makes me feel
- 26:56something. And as much as I like Chris,
- 26:59chibnall Zahra and episodes, those moments, just don't hit me
- 27:04in the heart like Dates back in Rusty, Davis's time.
- 27:10When it showed up with Jim strong, as well for the
- 27:12direction of these scenes because it's not just about
- 27:16Scooby and about Jefferson, it's roses reaction, it's, you know,
- 27:21Danny's reaction, it's actually, everyone gets a reaction shot,
- 27:26don't they everyone? And again, like I said, they're
- 27:30all reacting slightly differently because it's not a
- 27:34universal thing and that's why these characters feel real
- 27:38because they're so well drawn. And so, Oh, well acted, yeah.
- 27:42Well, you go straight from that quiet moment into a moment of
- 27:45action and Jeopardy again. Yeah, because that's what this
- 27:48jewelry does. All the way through I did the
- 27:50same with scooty. Didn't a, is she there?
- 27:52She's floating away and then suddenly the base is under under
- 27:55siege, yeah, pull away from that moment and we've got to react,
- 27:59you know, and that all that's that's the chilling moment where
- 28:03he puts the fingers to his lips and his eyes turn red, only the
- 28:08actor saying that he Love doing this role because he's never
- 28:11played anything like this before.
- 28:12He got some really menacing you know, I'll put a question about
- 28:18feed them, right? Oh, why is it that the
- 28:22characters in this based on The Siege story are so memorable.
- 28:27And yet, this is subjective. I realized this question to me,
- 28:31the characters in The Rebel flesh and the almost people and
- 28:36that two parts are in series 9 on the underwater base on
- 28:40anywhere near as memorable. Like, I can't remember off those
- 28:43characters names, let alone their backstories What makes it
- 28:47so effective here? It's probably what we've talked
- 28:52about the the rating for one in the direction as well.
- 28:55You know, the fact that, you know, we aren't just allowed to
- 28:59forget these characters when the go that we are dwelling on them
- 29:03that we are spending that time to mark their person.
- 29:08It's like when we did remembrance of the Daleks June,
- 29:11we talked about what you want and Ratcliffe and Make, you
- 29:17know, when they died, we had two shots of their face.
- 29:21So that stays with you, that you know, that count as not just
- 29:24disposable the actually, where the encoder of the funeral, as
- 29:27well. Didn't wait very own.
- 29:28Yeah, I thought this was visually very.
- 29:32Yeah, just him in the dark. And the way he's in the middle
- 29:39of it. So you feel that it's big and he
- 29:41seems small, is is really good. We don't see the doctor as a
- 29:46small figure very often. And it's interesting because
- 29:51that's official I could have pulled off in Classico just
- 29:53blah. Yeah.
- 29:54Yeah. It's the G Williams with the
- 29:58black drapes. It's really awesome.
- 30:03That's incredibly just hang in there.
- 30:07Yeah, but what like with this again comes down at the
- 30:11direction and editing is that we've had a big sequence on the
- 30:14base with rules leading the team against it lose.
- 30:19That was a long sort of like, was it ten-minute sequence?
- 30:22You know, we've completely you know put the doctor and I do to
- 30:26one side and now we're coming back to them you know, so we get
- 30:30some time without. It's not like, you know, where
- 30:33you might cut quite quickly between the two and a half, you
- 30:36know, like a couple of minutes. Base couple of minutes in the
- 30:38pit so on and so forth. We been given the time that we
- 30:42need, you know, to get the tension, built up to get the
- 30:46fear to get the drama before we come back down.
- 30:49And so, now we get some time with these two to again, build
- 30:52up and have this these adult conversations about religion and
- 30:57faith and, and all the rest of it.
- 31:00It's a moment where I just says, I don't want to die alone as he
- 31:05had another might lie, I think, would that would Hit as an adult
- 31:08that isn't yeah. It's more cerebral than your
- 31:12average new. Who episode isn't it?
- 31:14It's I think why it stands up so well.
- 31:20Really effective and you do you think, like when you're going
- 31:24from other ten minutes of Uris action to Extended dialogue,
- 31:27scenes and the pacing would feel off, but I don't think it does,
- 31:32but it feels very well judged like that is like Peaks and
- 31:36troughs but it all feels Ernst. It feels and you've got a big
- 31:42action sequence and then acquired to sequence afterwards
- 31:45because the characters are dealing with different things in
- 31:49different. Places here and I think that
- 31:52that works well to differentiate between it just as quiet moment
- 31:57of the doctor having some doubt is really, really great.
- 32:02Here we go. This is the bit.
- 32:03Isn't it? Where he's talking about from
- 32:05Beyond before the universe and he can't believe in that?
- 32:10And especially this will fit his rules.
- 32:13Yeah. If Doctor Who sort of goes
- 32:14around the universe like a bit cocky and I know it all, you
- 32:18know. So there you go.
- 32:21Jason Thompson. That's the impossible in The
- 32:23Impossible Planet. The comes from before time yet
- 32:26the fact that surround a black orb it's impossible because it
- 32:30comes before time and the other impossible is that David
- 32:34Tennant's? Doctor doesn't know it all.
- 32:36There we go. it will always still going to pretend in the
- 32:41next week's episode that he does, of course, Now, he's great
- 32:47and you're right side 10 and didn't get enough.
- 32:51Extended quiet moments like this, I think, or they went the
- 32:54other way, didn't they in the specials?
- 32:57It was all that and none of them grapple grapple.
- 33:00Gabbo, gabbo gabbo gabbo the whole time.
- 33:03I've gotta say, some of those scenes, the scene between him
- 33:05and we'll find end of time. We give them the gun.
- 33:08Like, some of those scenes are incredibly active.
- 33:11Yes, we'll, we'll find the doctor in the cafe.
- 33:13In entertain part. One is, is worth watching that
- 33:16entire episode, just for that one scene in some school.
- 33:20To ask, I mean, David Tennant was hit immediately, you know,
- 33:24he was a massive hit. He was you kind of, you know,
- 33:29you had the same sort of energy, is Chris at Boston's doctor,
- 33:33bought the same name different, you know, very energetic, but
- 33:36different type of energetic, you know, gobble gobble gobble,
- 33:40mine's a million amazing, lots of teeth accident in whatnot.
- 33:46How how did you find him then? And how did you Find him now.
- 33:51Oh yeah, that's a really, that's a big question, isn't it?
- 33:57I actually I think series to it is his weakest season and I feel
- 34:03there's a massive step up from Runaway Bride onwards.
- 34:07There's a lack of maturity in his performance from that second
- 34:10series where he knows he's been a here and they're doing
- 34:14probably more complex things of his character as well.
- 34:17In that first series, I feel that Peter Davison sort of If
- 34:22I'm excitable, or if I'm this or if I'm at I'm just going to do
- 34:25this squeaky voice. You know.
- 34:26And there's a lot of that and it goes from like extreme anger to
- 34:30be an extremely calm and it sounds like he's trying
- 34:33everything out and seeing what sticks you then you can watch
- 34:36him in Smith and Jones and that's a really measured
- 34:39performance and Smith and Jones and and you know and then you're
- 34:43getting performances. Like human nature.
- 34:45You're getting from. This is like midnight what was
- 34:47of Mars as some of the best action you've ever seen.
- 34:49And the time in Doctor Who He gets better and better as he
- 34:53goes along that first series. He's finding his feet so I he's
- 35:00good, he's always good, but there's a, but I've, yes.
- 35:07The thing is he David? Tennant is always good and
- 35:11always works with the material. I don't think his doctor is very
- 35:16likable at the time. I thought he was wonderful, but
- 35:20going back to him. Him sort of years later he's not
- 35:25adopted that I like very much. He's not he's very full of
- 35:29himself, he's very sure of himself.
- 35:31He's very cocky and it's designed to be a contrast with
- 35:36the 9th Doctor Who Wasn't those things but wanted to be those
- 35:40things what I think happens with David Tennant is the opposite of
- 35:46what happens with Matt Smith, I think David Tennant starts
- 35:49failing consistency in assistant Lee and he gets more assured as
- 35:55he goes along and then he's delivering powerhouses in his
- 35:57last season and a bit. Whereas I think Matt Smith
- 36:01starts out incredibly assuredly in series 5 and come 7 there
- 36:07right into his successes and the performance suffers as a result
- 36:12sigh. Yeah.
- 36:15Oh you're absolutely right. I think they have at the even at
- 36:19the end, then not necessarily writing to David Tennant
- 36:23successes. He brings some of those but
- 36:26they're not. It's the 10th doctor is
- 36:30consistently written all the way through in a way that maybe the
- 36:3411th isn't Greater. Yeah, I kind of agree with you
- 36:41as both to certain extent, I think as yeah, you know, at the
- 36:46time you know, I was as much of a tenant Farmers as anyone else
- 36:50was when this series went out live, you know, totally against
- 36:53swept along with the the zaniness in the teeth acting in
- 36:57and all the rest of it and, you know, coming back at it.
- 37:01Now it is the later performances that are prefer the ones where
- 37:05he does have those more Still Moments, you know, that's sort
- 37:08of, like, end of gridlock where Martha pulls out.
- 37:11The Cheney has to sit and phasing you note or the other,
- 37:14you see the student any scene with him and Bernard cribbins in
- 37:17end of time is just you know, absolutely magnificent.
- 37:22And I think it's not so much that he's character has been
- 37:25written differently again. It's the different Dynamic.
- 37:28You know you take him away from Rose, Tyler in you give them
- 37:31Martha Jones, who was kind of pain enough trouble, unrequited
- 37:34lie, if you put them with you know Catherine Teams not into
- 37:38any of that. Donna Noble, not many of that.
- 37:41Then it's a completely different Dynamic.
- 37:43But I typically work with you said, say about his doctor being
- 37:46very unlikable at times and certainly, you know, season
- 37:50series for when he is with Donna, there's a lot of sort of
- 37:55control around them. You know.
- 37:59He's the one that's in control and Donna in Martha and Rose to
- 38:04different extent are quite subservient to his Dr. Which I
- 38:09don't particularly enjoy a lot of the time.
- 38:11I think that's why, you know, serious things over with
- 38:14subservient, to the 10th doctor. Are you watching today?
- 38:18Yeah. Absolutely.
- 38:19I mean, you take the end of fires of Pompeii, for example,
- 38:24where Donna is reduced to go back.
- 38:28She or doesn't she doesn't she, I'm telling you this thing back,
- 38:33she collapses in a blubbering mess on the TARDIS.
- 38:37To the point where he then goes back and see if Capaldi's family
- 38:41and then she is expected to be thankful for it.
- 38:46But he has done her a fear that's have reading on that.
- 38:49I've never considered. I think, you know, I think is
- 38:51next wrong. I know, I actually agree with
- 38:55Fraser home. Well, I think, any companion
- 39:00that comes after Donna, sort of Amer Clara that seen a fat seen
- 39:06it played out, then the doctor would have felt a bibbity
- 39:09bobbity buck. And Across these.
- 39:12Why did generate again? Why does the doctor have to be a
- 39:17likable figure? Why can't was not just because
- 39:20this longing of our story essentially Capaldi's are
- 39:24fucking asshole, but if no one likes him, only the fans like
- 39:29him. I like him.
- 39:31So sort of times and so is. And I don't like him because it
- 39:35takes Man when it comes to time Lords I do yes particular kind
- 39:48of doctor it would seem as if it's not then it's weird, you
- 39:53know? Because it's complete opposite
- 39:54of my love life but I happen to really like a bastard, you know,
- 40:03I think the doctor should be sorry I was just gonna comment
- 40:06about what was going on. On-screen.
- 40:10What's on the Telly? Isn't the priest good?
- 40:15Yeah, surprisingly so given we are however many years later.
- 40:19What? We 18 years later Not quite only
- 40:23it's only be back 17. So though we're 15 years but
- 40:29Technologies come on a lot in 15 years.
- 40:33And Given that special effect was never supposed to be there.
- 40:35They had to scrape together, money to put that effect on the
- 40:38screen. It's a brilliant effect.
- 40:41I mean, the CGI of the whole coven is stupendous in the Beast
- 40:46is magnificently realized. Yeah.
- 40:49And it's just the scale. Yeah.
- 40:51When they, when you've got the little doctor looking at, I will
- 40:54with the Beast bearing down on him.
- 40:56Yeah, and yet, it might not stand up quite as well in the,
- 41:00you know, days of fun officers Whatever else that marvelous
- 41:04chuckling that goes under, yeah, what does actually be assist
- 41:07from Disney plus, but it's still a really good effect in a really
- 41:11good and I think that's only one year later than the slovene from
- 41:17World War 3. Yeah, yeah, things move on Fast.
- 41:22Look how far we've come, honestly, you know, in this
- 41:27climax. I really love the scenes in the
- 41:29shuttle. I feel like everybody's really,
- 41:32really well. Well written, I love the bit
- 41:34where Rose wakes up and down. He goes, oh my God!
- 41:36We're gonna have a Troublesome passenger here and she just for
- 41:40the ball garbage, she's president, she literally is
- 41:45technically committing suicide. There, there's no way she
- 41:48couldn't have known that in that wind.
- 41:50She was going to save the universe and do the right thing.
- 41:55It's great. And I do think the guy playing
- 41:58Toby is chilly, when he is just spouting out that, I so good.
- 42:04I mean, that's the angle, isn't it?
- 42:05That's the sort of angle of the resolution is that, you know,
- 42:09the DSC of the universe is safe because the doctor has faith in
- 42:14rules not anything else? Because again we have this whole
- 42:19thing's it, huh? Well, you would lose moves.
- 42:21Oh no. But then it's kind of I have
- 42:25faith in her that she's not a victim and that everything will
- 42:28all turn out. Well and I think to, I do not
- 42:32buy this, you know, I'll go gone gone, I'll come back.
- 42:35Hey, the talked over a lot of the scenes where rules is, you
- 42:41know, having to be Cydia that they get onto the ship as well.
- 42:45And you know, for all that I can point fault and what rules
- 42:51Taylor can't actually fault. Billy paper in the slightest.
- 42:56Now we're at all. She just she is and I think her
- 43:02seems Jean Bad Wolf by. That's the rawest performance.
- 43:06You're going to say from an actor in doctor whose entire
- 43:09run. I don't know what ever see is
- 43:11like again. And even even here when she is,
- 43:16you know, being told that you can't go back for the doctor
- 43:17when she wants to go back to the doctor.
- 43:20There's a very sort of childlike performance there from her.
- 43:24You know, I'm going to stay and it's like because I don't know
- 43:26what I want to be on my own. There's a very sort, of course,
- 43:29to a very childlike place with that performance.
- 43:33It's just brilliant. And this, I mean, Lex, I don't
- 43:35particularly like what happens between him and the doctor as
- 43:38their characters, but that is probably all the more because
- 43:42Cuz of really papers performance.
- 43:46Yeah, I agree. With some of it does, that's a
- 43:51really great moment where Toby gives himself away.
- 43:54But no one knows where he says, what's he doing?
- 43:58What's he doing? And no one on the ship knows why
- 44:03he said that and I don't pay any attention but you know, that
- 44:07they're still the connection between Toby and the Beast at
- 44:10that point, it's really remarkable moment and I do know
- 44:14this show just go back to what you were saying about will
- 44:18Forbes. Performance and considering he's
- 44:22perform it. His lines are being dubbed,
- 44:25really as well because because it's Some of it is it Gabriel
- 44:33wolf doing that or is it him? I'm not sure.
- 44:37But yeah so if he's just mouthing those words and it's
- 44:40even more important. Yeah, I think that's really much
- 44:45healing. Yeah, I die written York knees
- 44:48forever. He knows, he's really sitting
- 44:51pretty Panic. A my voice is going to squeaky
- 44:54like, yeah, I'm gonna give you a hug then Rose has her James
- 45:02Bond, blind, go to hell. Yes, it's and it's fine.
- 45:07It's what you do. I love it.
- 45:11I love it. Don't you know what?
- 45:13I'm gonna lay in a little secret when I first watched this.
- 45:16Yeah. And I know this because I went
- 45:18back and read my reviews on the dock, I do reviews.
- 45:21I absolutely adore. The state of big gave it 10/10,
- 45:24I load, I hate this episode. I gave it a 4 out of 10, whereas
- 45:28now, I think it's a very consistent piece.
- 45:30It's very strange, how your opinion can change over time.
- 45:33I think the second part of the stronger part.
- 45:35I think we'll you word from you. I think obviously the The
- 45:40tension and the emotion is more in the first part, but the
- 45:43second one is where the quieter more contemplative moments come.
- 45:46And like I said, the rows in the doctor are completely separated,
- 45:49which makes both of their characters instantly better. and
- 45:54as I said, the whole thing is just so incredibly well
- 45:57realized, I just love this bit where he's blown backwards and
- 46:02he's blown into the Tardis and it's either that's why it is
- 46:06feel. It's a huge coincidence and know
- 46:10this is the marigold course of delight tons.
- 46:23Let you go and tadaa its backwards.
- 46:29Well, it is, as you've probably got that, my biggest book,
- 46:33bareboat rtds rating, is the resolution to a lot of these
- 46:38plots where it is just dies. It's like literally dies in this
- 46:43instance, you know, x mark and not just, you know, though those
- 46:49narrative threads have kind of led him down a corridor Down an
- 46:53alley, where there's no other way out, other than just, the
- 46:57Tardis is there. They actually Jesus for tardis
- 47:01going down a hole in the first episode and then the doctor
- 47:05traveled down a hole in the second episode.
- 47:08How is that a deus ex machina? He's literally, he's found his
- 47:12ship. He's gone in the direction, it
- 47:14fell. But the pit wasn't open at that
- 47:17point. You always gone down a few
- 47:20tunnels also happens. He staggers in the right
- 47:25direction to where the Tardis is.
- 47:29Yep, this bothers me a bit because he says, oh, I couldn't
- 47:34go back and save the Ubud. Well, why couldn't you go back
- 47:38and save the end? And if Jodi Whittaker's doctor
- 47:41had done this, they wouldn't be huge outcries.
- 47:44Right now about another race that she's let go.
- 47:47And the 10th doctor could get away.
- 47:49With it that you know what? If you read the writers, tail
- 47:52Rusty Davis says himself, that was a mistake and that's why he
- 47:57wanted to write planet of the Ood.
- 47:59And he even says in Planet of the huge, I should have saved
- 48:02them and so he wants to he wanted to like acknowledge that
- 48:06they shouldn't have done this at the end of this story, it's
- 48:09terrible ache because there's no reason why the doctor couldn't
- 48:12have gone and save them. He said there's no time but he's
- 48:16got a fucking time machine, you know, don't you?
- 48:19It's all about a lot of people that died in.
- 48:21But well, not blood. Are you sure?
- 48:27I thought you knew everyone. Hey, it literally just need to
- 48:31line. Doesn't it?
- 48:32Like I couldn't see if it would do to the Blended blend of it?
- 48:36Limitation effect, I could only make one trip that was, that was
- 48:39a much better comment on the human race where it's like that
- 48:44alert. I want you to promise me that
- 48:46you're not. Are what, why am I kidding?
- 48:47You just gotta go. Yeah.
- 48:48Anyway, Way the human race. That's a much better reading
- 48:52than, you know, humans are amazing.
- 48:57Oh, this was the last thing they should not wash.
- 49:00This was their last story. The stuff of Legend.
- 49:05It's a nice pull out on them as well, up the come up, the time
- 49:09rotor and I'll say it again now. Even though you guys might not
- 49:13think it, they are the stuff of Legend because they're still
- 49:15talked about now, this parent. Yeah.
- 49:20So perhaps deserved if a little bit self-congratulatory Well
- 49:25it's my self-congratulatory doesn't it.
- 49:28Well it certainly Dallas. Yeah.
- 49:29Oh come on every year you know that Sentara special was going
- 49:32to be. So I was Time of the Doctor so
- 49:35it was in the time they were all seen off their Errors By
- 49:38clapping themselves on the back. It's nice that you see no more,
- 49:44who was I what self-congratulatory?
- 49:50Yeah. Well you should be absolutely
- 49:54fantastic. That's love of monsters.
- 49:58I've got a brand-new combine harvester.
- 50:00You've got a brand-new key again and I'm flashing you.
- 50:10My knickers Yeah, I'll leave you there.
- 50:25Oh, Joe anyway, fellas, we've reached the end of our epic
- 50:37adventure, on Sanctuary Base, number 6, or whatever number it
- 50:40is. Oh, that was if the nothing that
- 50:45made us laugh. One at the start and Impossible
- 50:48Planet where I does like to take what planet is this.
- 50:52And she's like, as if this planet could have a name and
- 50:54then five minutes later. She's like, so this week's used
- 50:58to call this planet cropped, or she was trying to be openness,
- 51:09shall we do our round robin of free things up?
- 51:12A piece that we recommend about The Impossible Planet and the
- 51:16Satan pit. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:19They say you're at the top of the screen.
- 51:20Why don't you go first? Well, I'm going to take the top
- 51:26one, which is, I think the thing that really makes this story
- 51:30work better than anything else. The one thing that lifts it
- 51:37above everything else is movie called score this, the You know
- 51:42that simple violent piece but then they'll bit that comes
- 51:44after that which is a bit more Your Castle but still just based
- 51:48around the strings. It just really cells that Miss
- 51:50fear, all the scenes down in the pit and Scooby's death and the
- 51:56bit where they find a body, it just absolutely, you know, seals
- 52:01those moments in really Elevate them.
- 52:03So movie gold, I'm gonna say the authentic and lived in set.
- 52:12Setting is a huge strength of this and the efforts that the
- 52:16design team have gone to to make it feel that way.
- 52:20So I'm going to say the absolutely beautifully
- 52:27wonderfully cast cast of this story, really make this story
- 52:34made the characters are all feel authentic without and everyone
- 52:40is really good without Very showy.
- 52:46Fraser and second thing that I love about this and would
- 52:51recommend it for is the separation of the Doctor and
- 52:53Rose in the second part and to allow Rose Tyler to be
- 53:00magnificent away from the doctor.
- 53:02And you'll fully sure what she is capable of as a companion as
- 53:06a substitute doctor. But then also, to give David
- 53:10Tennant, his sort of Davis, a moment with a different female
- 53:15companion, To have those wonderful back and forth
- 53:18discussions around some really deep meaty topics.
- 53:25I'm going to say there was like three or four very adult moments
- 53:30of horror that hit in this episode, Jefferson asking to
- 53:35commit, suicide scooty, knowing that she was about to die and
- 53:43those were moments that really made me sit up and pay
- 53:45attention. The first time I watched this
- 53:49and I think yeah, there are some really genuinely chilling
- 53:52moments in this and Dobbs who doesn't scare me very often.
- 53:55There's a few moments in this that do.
- 54:00Okay, it's got to be the Ood, whose are gue.
- 54:04That's so brilliant. That beautifully designed, they
- 54:08feel real. They feel like they've got a
- 54:11culture and something that we don't quite know and the writing
- 54:15about them being a slave race. And then the fact that they're
- 54:19all absolutely disposable that they can put a virus in just to
- 54:23kill them, all off, and the doctor leaves them.
- 54:27All behind says, a lot about them, think they They, they were
- 54:30one of the monsters that captured the imagination from
- 54:34the new series and the fact that they were in Doctor Who just
- 54:38last year again and they were at the center piece almost of the
- 54:43time, lord, Victorious story as well, with Brian Lee Hood and
- 54:47all those things, they're very memorable and their comeback for
- 54:52a reason because their goods, there's lots to explore their,
- 54:56it's even with their personal balls.
- 54:57So pretty simple design, isn't it?
- 54:59But it's Memorable. Yeah, because they're not
- 55:02they're not quite human with their eyes on the sides and
- 55:05their little tentacles in front of their mouths and things like
- 55:09that. It's really, really nice design
- 55:11work. Okay.
- 55:12Way for kids to kind of moving with this.
- 55:13Well yeah if fingers yes we've all been doing.
- 55:16Yeah. Fraser em.
- 55:20Just on a tangent then you know obviously will have planet of
- 55:24the Ood coming up in series for you.
- 55:28Do you guys think that's a good? Good continuation of the old
- 55:31story, or would you have liked to have seen something a bit
- 55:33different? I think planet of the Ood isn't
- 55:37Eric's toward story transplanted into the new series, it's
- 55:42violent. The body count is high.
- 55:44It's gritty its directed by Graeme Harper.
- 55:48It's it's, I think it's, I and I do think it offers a sympathetic
- 55:55reading of the Ood and takes them to a satisfying conclusion.
- 56:00So I think it's a great continuation.
- 56:04I'm fine. Absolutely, but it's got a big
- 56:09brain. Yeah, I I don't know it.
- 56:15It's okay. It's just okay, it never is one.
- 56:18I've been all I'd really like to watch planet of the Ood and in a
- 56:22mood bit like an area toward story.
- 56:25Yeah, yeah. I don't know it, I can't quite
- 56:31grasp what it is. That is Because I don't feel
- 56:34there's anything wrong with it, but I don't think there's lots
- 56:37that makes it stand out Iva. And Donna is very much in the
- 56:42same mode as rows in this story of are there a slave race.
- 56:47You need to be better and but there's a lot of running around
- 56:50and that the awful sort of subplot of turning mr.
- 56:57Food maker into a nude himself. I don't think that quite a bit
- 57:03because you've got a B movie moment where he peels off his
- 57:06wings and it's got the stupid moment with with the with the
- 57:15big digger. Italian Well when did you wash
- 57:27them together? One day often.
- 57:29Yes. It's an inch long list.
- 57:32The one time since I've seen planet of the Ood and yet it's
- 57:36not one that I'm clamoring to go back and see not do well from
- 57:39what I remember there was just some very very silly.
- 57:43Points where you just think this is bobbins.
- 57:45This is and I wonder if you two wouldn't watch that you know,
- 57:50now because it sounds like it's been awhile and re-evaluate that
- 57:53one a little bit obvious lessons bobbins to be honest.
- 57:56But I think you know, just, I think that would my opinion
- 58:02from, what I remember of it is that that you deserved a bit
- 58:04better than that story. The deserved a bit more, the
- 58:07meteor, Continuation, a better story than just, you know, big
- 58:14brains in pits and stuff like that, John a bit.
- 58:19I think that, that really sells how dreadfully they're being
- 58:22treated is, when you got those free use and they'd given him
- 58:25all different voices, the sexy woman, who'd, and the Homer
- 58:28Simpson Rule, and I'm like, no. And not only slaves, they're
- 58:32taking a piss out of them as well, like it's just awful, and
- 58:35it's so real because that's what we do with such a commercially
- 58:38Society. Now those exactly what we would
- 58:40do. So pulling.
- 58:42It was that your point? Was that just a question?
- 58:44No, that was just running through a question.
- 58:50We talked about Buddha had a question so I asked her but it's
- 58:52obviously anyone out there that really loves planet of the Ood,
- 58:55then feel free to drop your message and come on home.
- 58:58Schooling is bagsy. Don't worry, sometimes when you
- 59:00got it. But what I've just said there
- 59:04should all turned off at the first five minutes of the
- 59:06episode 1. Anyway, anyhow, it's my turn to
- 59:09pick. You're still with us is phrases.
- 59:12Third point. It's Jim's, reassuringly,
- 59:16expensive, strong and his Direction.
- 59:20I was going to be my one. That's why you shouldn't let me
- 59:23go first. Yeah, it's a fantastic directed
- 59:29episode as we've discussed. There's a lot of shots, lot of
- 59:32moments that would necessarily, you know, necessary.
- 59:37But also in there, I think, you know, the end Scene with David
- 59:41Tennant, where he is confident in the beast in, he's gone back
- 59:43to his chief acting and all the rest of it.
- 59:48And, you know, the different cuts in there.
- 59:51The different angles all cook. Together really works
- 59:55fantastically. Well he's bought, he's got a
- 59:58fantastic performance out of all of these cast.
- 1:00:00Well well done it's my third thing is it is this his first?
- 1:00:06Yeah. What a way to impress hmm.
- 1:00:10Went on to do Daleks in Manhattan and evolution of the
- 1:00:12Daleks Voyage of the Damned partners in crime, in the Planet
- 1:00:16of the Dead. I think partners in crime is the
- 1:00:19new series episodes with the most amount of scenes, you know,
- 1:00:22there's a website, whatever you might think of Daleks in
- 1:00:29Manhattan, evolution of the Daleks.
- 1:00:30It is very well directed. I think he's just a very
- 1:00:34competent director and he knows how to put a starter shop
- 1:00:38together. And put the money on the screen
- 1:00:41and well then I suppose my third and now I'm literally on the fly
- 1:00:47now because I had one so it now got to make it up my third
- 1:00:52recommendation. For this is anomalous, a sexy
- 1:00:56ventilation starch, Fraser is to be utterly contrary I think the
- 1:01:08Tenth Doctor and Rose are terrific in the first episode
- 1:01:12and it's nice to have that opposing view.
- 1:01:13Don't you give me those eyes? I'll I think is a justifiably
- 1:01:19celebrated hearing and there is a confidence and a chemistry
- 1:01:25between the two actors that has rarely been bettered or caught
- 1:01:31on with the general audiences. You know what?
- 1:01:34It doesn't work for me. It's coming into this episode
- 1:01:37and isolation, I didn't enjoy it.
- 1:01:40Taking the whole series as a whole.
- 1:01:43It does work and you know knowing where we're going you
- 1:01:50know I watch they get to London the other night and the would
- 1:01:52just as horrendous in that as the word in this.
- 1:01:56So, you know, it is definitely a continuation and is definitely
- 1:01:59planned by RTD that we are going to, you know, To make this a
- 1:02:05hyper sort of romance. And then because I'm going to
- 1:02:08pull the rug out of it from underwritten.
- 1:02:10I think that's one of the things I like about RTD is that you
- 1:02:14pushes his character as in places that you might not enjoy
- 1:02:18them going but without better but makes it better and classic
- 1:02:23example. Again would be the Tenth Doctors
- 1:02:26final scene with Wilfred end of time part 2.
- 1:02:29Where, you know, I could have done so much more and he's
- 1:02:32raging against the fuck. Some say well and so you know
- 1:02:34you don't like that but for me that is pushing the character
- 1:02:39into a place that we don't enjoy but we get much more out of it
- 1:02:44from from that and that is exactly what what he's doing
- 1:02:47with the Tenth Doctor and Rose. Here, I feel like with the time
- 1:02:49stops are in those specials, he started basically like the tenth
- 1:02:55doctor it's almost like he knows how popular is and he buys into
- 1:02:59his own myth and the humor was that I don't like it but I love
- 1:03:05that. They did it.
- 1:03:06I love it. They took the doctor to a point
- 1:03:07where he's so fucking arrogant, that he thinks he can take on
- 1:03:11time itself. And I'm going to make up the
- 1:03:14rules and I'm this all-important and then he's punished for it.
- 1:03:17He's killed like. No, you can't.
- 1:03:19That you've gone too far, you're out.
- 1:03:22I like that. It's dark, and it's unusual.
- 1:03:27And I, you know, like yeah, people are usually really didn't
- 1:03:30like it, but it's certainly trying new things.
- 1:03:33Things, you know. It's yeah, well you can't fault
- 1:03:35it for that really can't. What's your third thing?
- 1:03:39I think. I am going to bring the tone
- 1:03:44down and say, oh my God will fault.
- 1:03:47Oh yeah just because we could all have moments of that and
- 1:03:54right from when it. Yeah.
- 1:03:56Oh God. Yeah.
- 1:03:58So there and I he looks really sexy with the num with the
- 1:04:03lettering across his face. I mean I'm sorry about that
- 1:04:06though. I worried about like I'm sorry
- 1:04:08you're more turned on by him when he's the devil.
- 1:04:12Well, you know that was my gonna be my question with or without
- 1:04:16the red I say oh, we've Go. The whole hog.
- 1:04:21Does that mean you like a bad boy because he's a good boy.
- 1:04:27It's just something about bad. Boy, isn't especially when the
- 1:04:30wind blowing your hair and your tempting people out there.
- 1:04:36How on Earth do we got? No free now.
- 1:04:38How did I miss out? Shawn parks and is BBC.
- 1:04:41I mean, are you can have an extra one?
- 1:04:42There we go, never mind. No, no, I'll have my 3.
- 1:04:47Well, well, boys, which way we heading next.
- 1:04:52Well anyway that's always we have we've discussed so many
- 1:04:59stories that we going to do. Haven't we?
- 1:05:04We have and there are a couple there are free.
- 1:05:08I believe that we could put into a pole.
- 1:05:11Oh please. If you could just announce those
- 1:05:13three and then, okay, well we got, it's been a while since we
- 1:05:17ignored at Twitter pool. Exactly, we've got Christopher
- 1:05:21Eccleston. Visiting card, if in Boomtown.
- 1:05:25Oh yes, amazing. We've got Patrick troughton
- 1:05:30Fraser Hines and when deep a e heading to the moon in the seeds
- 1:05:35of death, another six part, I woo.
- 1:05:39And and just recently added to the list of stories, we're going
- 1:05:43to do take on one of the top 10 best ever Doctor Who stories and
- 1:05:51we go back. This one.
- 1:05:53Oh sorry the best one. Best art history ever made.
- 1:05:57We got to go back in time to a point before the Daleks were
- 1:06:01created. You mean avert their creation or
- 1:06:06affect? Their genetic development.
- 1:06:08They evolved with the less aggressive creatures that
- 1:06:12feasible. We fucking know which story will
- 1:06:15win this pole. I'm sorry but won't sound but do
- 1:06:19we have the rate?
