- 0:23None. Hamster with a blump.
- 0:34Pen knife for doing quicker, quicker, quicker.
- 0:39Quicker Are you ready for Episode 2, Joe?
- 0:41I am ready for episode 2, Matt. Dude, I think it's.
- 0:44Peaceful. I think it's shrouded, you know,
- 0:52we can't see it. All right, let's go and find
- 0:58Lady Pink. What's dead body?
- 1:00Oh Jesus, What is it? What does it matter?
- 1:05These are she's dead. But I am alive.
- 1:09This is your tomb, Richard. What?
- 1:13Matter. Well, look, shall we dive
- 1:23straight in? Let's go in.
- 1:25Let's do it. Let's not do any bumps if you're
- 1:28part of the expression. Let's go in 321.
- 1:34Off we go. How old were you then when this
- 1:37was on? 8.
- 1:41Oh, perfect. It's almost too perfect at that
- 1:44age. It is.
- 1:45It's it's brilliant. And this this series is the one
- 1:49that I particularly remember as a kid.
- 1:55I love Silver Nemesis. I remember I was at a Christmas
- 1:58party when Greatest Show was on, because I think that I think
- 2:03that just tipped over into 1989 with the last episode.
- 2:10But it was a Christmas party and I sneaked out the Christmas
- 2:13party into a little spare room to watch The Greatest show on
- 2:19the TV. Which episode of Greatest Show
- 2:21in the Galaxy was that? It must have got it must have
- 2:25been episode 3, maybe two or. Three.
- 2:28It was episode four. I think that's the one or one of
- 2:31the very few McCoy episodes. That tipped 6 million.
- 2:33I think it's 6.6 million. Yeah.
- 2:35Thanks to you. Oh.
- 2:37Or. Or me.
- 2:39Oh, this is a long recap for McCoy.
- 2:42Oh no, it's not too long. Here they are the.
- 2:44Way his scarf sort of flies in the air like that.
- 2:47Because of the like engines of the Cyberman.
- 2:52Spaceship. I love the little disco lights
- 2:54they've got inside there as well, it looks like.
- 2:56Looks like they've got a little nightclub going on inside.
- 2:59There's a few little. I'd love to take a poke around
- 3:02that spaceship. There's a bit like a kind of the
- 3:05entrance to a sauna or something like that.
- 3:07Well, I'll tell you one or two things about that.
- 3:10You've got no, it's like that at the entrance.
- 3:11So you're sauna mine's just as all going down a back alley.
- 3:14Up the gutters you go. Thinking more of the sort of
- 3:20darkness in the sort of slightly sickly green glow coming from.
- 3:24Somewhere. Enjoy.
- 3:25I don't know. Right.
- 3:25Have you seen some of those sad man bumps?
- 3:28They're pretty men. Well, I mean.
- 3:31I think that's how they got cast, John Nathan Turner bend
- 3:35over, right? Oh, they love this pair.
- 3:40Sylvester McCoy 's. Hope you ordered.
- 3:42Diving away into craters, don't they?
- 3:44They do it a couple of times. They do, and they're very good
- 3:47at it as well. I I love Sylvester.
- 3:49Mccoy's like very sort of silent comedy, isn't he?
- 3:52It's just that kind of tactile. Sort of prat falling and things
- 3:59like that. He's really good at.
- 4:00You've got to think I'm mad. You know who he reminds me of
- 4:03with his physical comedy? Patricia Rowledge.
- 4:06She does the same sort of thing. She uses her whole body and she
- 4:10exaggerates her facial expressions.
- 4:13And it's very funny with McCoy and it's very funny with
- 4:16Patricia. Rowley, if he if he'd been born
- 4:18as producer in 1990, he would have been like Patricia Rowledge
- 4:22is the new Doctor Who. Yes, that would be amazing.
- 4:31Upwardly mobile Time Lord yeah. Oh, I love it be.
- 4:36Careful of my round those days. What else was the thing that
- 4:39annoyed me, though? JNT was always talking about how
- 4:41he talked about comedy actors being in Doctor Who, and he'd
- 4:44always cite Patricia Routledge as a great comedy actress that
- 4:47delivers amazing drama. How did he never fucking cast
- 4:50her? No.
- 4:52What Cunt? She'd have been a brilliant
- 4:54villain. She would.
- 4:55Oh yeah. She would have been a shoe in, I
- 4:59reckon, if there'd been a fourth McCoy series.
- 5:02There's two things they love in the thrust of McCoy era, Matt,
- 5:05and that is sparks going, pitting, pitting off people and
- 5:09cars and Cybermen and everything and guns with like, physical
- 5:14flashes. They do like a bit of physical
- 5:17flashes. There's a there's gold dipped in
- 5:19poison. Lady Penfold's calling card.
- 5:22Lassie. I wish I had a cold calling card
- 5:27that was like gold dipped in poison.
- 5:30My lady, who is that little man? It is.
- 5:40Here's my signature. Don't touch it.
- 5:43Don't scratch yourself. That's what I said last time
- 5:46your cock came out. Oh glorious evil it is.
- 5:49He. Everything started sparking.
- 5:58Oh, I could do amazing things, honestly.
- 6:02I I I just love the little looks that Carl gives to to to Flores.
- 6:09Like when he's like, go and fetch that bow and he's like,
- 6:11for fuck's sake, am I getting paid for this?
- 6:14You know what He's doing it though, don't you?
- 6:16He's absolutely realised that Anton Different has phoned out
- 6:19and he's just, you know, he's more of a statue than the bloody
- 6:22statue, so he's like right, I've got to reject a bit of character
- 6:25into these. The statue is made of living
- 6:28metal and Anton Difference made of Deadwood, but.
- 6:35Sophie, you were so fat. Oh, my lady.
- 6:39There I would have killed to have been on the streets today.
- 6:42This was filmed. Look, there's a lot of people at
- 6:46a bus stop and she's walking, passing fucking Edwardian dress.
- 6:52Just flouncing A flouncing dress.
- 6:55Oh, I do love this location inside this sort of silo.
- 6:59Whatever it is, it's great. This is, do you not think these
- 7:03scenes are really Sharda as well?
- 7:06So it's like when Scan Chris walking around Cambridge in
- 7:091979, her walking. I just think there's So there's
- 7:12something really Season 17 about this story.
- 7:15Oh, completely. And there's just something.
- 7:17So Doctor Who about it, isn't it?
- 7:18You've got monsters, you've got historical characters walking
- 7:21around contemporary Earth, you've got bloody spaceships
- 7:24going through the countryside. It's.
- 7:25Just like you couldn't do this in any other series, it wouldn't
- 7:28be right, the Nazis attempting, you know, a resurgence in their
- 7:33reputation. With about six of them, yeah,
- 7:37it's worse than the bloody Zygons.
- 7:39Yeah, you can do a lot with six Nazis, All right.
- 7:43Oh, I love this. Even by Omega and the Rascal.
- 7:46Medium was created as the ultimate defence source on
- 7:49Gallopry. Is this the first time that it's
- 7:52confirmed that Omega and Rascal on the contemporaries?
- 7:57Why is it remembrance it does talk about?
- 8:00Didn't he just say that they had trouble with the original
- 8:03though? Does he mention wrestle on the
- 8:05Omega? Didn't we have trouble with the
- 8:07original? He doesn't have one of those
- 8:08lines. You know, 15 new adventures were
- 8:11written around that line. That's very true and and she's
- 8:15trying to tease out. I love that she's trying to
- 8:17tease out like a bit of information there when it when
- 8:21she goes, it was created by Omega and she goes and and
- 8:23wrestle on and and she never left Galilee.
- 8:28Do you know actually on that documentary, the making of
- 8:31documentary that's on the video, you see them rehearsing that
- 8:36scene and McCoy keeps fluffing it up and his line delivery is
- 8:41terrible, but on location he's smooth ass.
- 8:45Yeah, he I I think it's, it's a shame, like on Big Finish,
- 8:49sometimes it's just like it becomes a bit obvious that it's
- 8:52the first time he's ever read the line when he's performing
- 8:55it, and sometimes it's line readings.
- 8:58They're a bit strange as a result, but you don't really get
- 9:02that on TV. He's always he's always
- 9:05rehearsed and on point on TVI. Love this bit when they're just
- 9:08wandering around as well. Oh, whistling.
- 9:11Yeah, there's just such relaxed chemistry between them.
- 9:16Do do you like the front axial projection that's used to make
- 9:19the the bow in the statue I? Do except for the when when
- 9:22they're in close quarters is our.
- 9:24Decrypt and then you can just see the light for cheap.
- 9:27But axial? So you're a big fan of front
- 9:29axial projection or fat you? Want to ask?
- 9:32Me that, I thought. I thought you you know the
- 9:34answer. To that question, all right,
- 9:39I'll have you know my front projection is about 15 metres,
- 9:44all right. I hear there's a lot of fat,
- 9:46fat, fat pink. We talked all over.
- 9:51What are you, social workers? Oh no, look, they're tied upside
- 9:56down, naked. We've both got.
- 10:00Joe's just left, just left, left the room for some reason.
- 10:04My hands are here, all right. He's just.
- 10:07He's just appeared on the TV screen.
- 10:16What do you think about that? So you know those very sort of.
- 10:19It's it feels like an old middle class man writing thugs.
- 10:23I I don't. I think it it's a strange choice
- 10:30because you don't need, they don't add anything.
- 10:32There's no point to those characters really.
- 10:35It's not the fact funnier joke, but death is but a door.
- 10:38But no. But I do love it when he goes,
- 10:42Who did this to you? Social workers.
- 10:44That's great. You know, like there's kind of
- 10:47like a vague sense that it was just because JNT wanted some
- 10:51skinheads tied up naked. I mean, I can think that's a
- 10:55good motive for me, you know? Are we having fun?
- 10:59Yeah. So.
- 11:02That's it. The idea here of the side men
- 11:05listening to jazz, which is something that is beautiful and
- 11:09unpredictable and illogical, saying its meaning.
- 11:13And then we take the Mickey out of the line.
- 11:15But that's a good idea. Oh, and the best bit about the
- 11:19novelisation is. There's a bit where the tape of
- 11:25the jazz is kind of used, like Cybermen trying to crush that
- 11:28tape is used as a bit of a metaphor for the way that they
- 11:32try to crush creativity and emotion and feelings.
- 11:36So it's probably, it's probably a Kevin Clark's biggest reach
- 11:40for like some sort of literary credibility.
- 11:42The Doctor's going to have a closer look.
- 11:44So there are germs for ideas here, aren't there?
- 11:49I thought, you're going to say there are germs in his mouth.
- 11:52His germs are now they. Touch the skinheads.
- 11:55They're covered in germs. There are when I'm finished
- 12:00with. Them.
- 12:01All right. Oh, just take your prep germ.
- 12:07There are seeds of ideas here. I'm not sure any of.
- 12:10Them are your seeds. Oh my God, I'll give up.
- 12:14I know not. They will eat us.
- 12:18I. Beg you, my lady.
- 12:23Return without the nemesis. Never return as England's now is
- 12:28full of terrors. Oh, they're all wonderful.
- 12:34Together, I feel as if they should have had a sequel of a
- 12:37pair of them. I I think they should.
- 12:40I think Richard should have like seduced Lady Painful and they
- 12:45could have rode off into the distance on the back of alarm.
- 12:51It is thy grave, Richard. If the dogs would not eat thee,
- 12:55I ordered you to put that. Here, see, there's thy stone.
- 13:02Daves is my burial place. Yeah, a lot grander.
- 13:09Isn't that the same sort of castle thing they use in
- 13:12Battlefield? It looks exactly the same.
- 13:14You know what? The explosions come out of it.
- 13:17Yeah, yeah. I don't know.
- 13:19Maybe I'll make an hour. Stay in your car while in the
- 13:22safari park. It's like a lion's room.
- 13:24The fear and a walk is like jabbing away Lion with their
- 13:29arrow. What's very funny about this is
- 13:31everyone just sort of. What?
- 13:32There's no pace to it was just sort of wandering around the
- 13:34countryside. Aren't they going well?
- 13:36It's a nice pottery episode. We'll come across the statue.
- 13:40At some point. At first, I'm in a poodle here.
- 13:43Oh. I love this bit.
- 13:45In a minute. Hello.
- 13:46I'm the Doctor and I believe you want to kill me.
- 13:50Oh, and the sidemen have had a Potter around as well.
- 13:54Yeah, what I I do quite like the these sort of polished up.
- 13:59Really silvery Cybermen. They're really leaning into the
- 14:03silver theme, aren't they? And I like the fact that he
- 14:06shoots them from below a lot. Yeah.
- 14:09But I just think this is some of the worst right in the cyber
- 14:12never had there. There's there's no real threat
- 14:15here, is there? Is this the human condition of
- 14:18madness, leader? It is Even they're getting
- 14:24comedy lines. It is meaningless.
- 14:32Oh, look, they they think. She's she's she's having a
- 14:36quandary. But you know, an identity crisis
- 14:40because she's just seen her tomb, don't they?
- 14:41I. I think it looks more like it's
- 14:43an instant lock in for The Crystal Maze and they look at
- 14:46the. Oh.
- 14:48Love the crystal Man. Traitors challenge.
- 14:51He went, he went, oh gold and they went, oh started running
- 14:56off and. Then, like Carl and the Flores
- 15:01are just driving around, have you seen a woman dressed in 17th
- 15:06century class? And he just goes.
- 15:09He just goes. Shut up, doesn't he?
- 15:15Oh yeah, so, so the the these tubby guys in the headphones are
- 15:20Cybermen agents because they're they're inside.
- 15:22I always thought one of them was John Levine I.
- 15:26Don't know why it looks like you.
- 15:32Can I? Ask you about I see, I see John
- 15:35Levine, sort of. I see dead people.
- 15:38Matt, can I ask you a question about the power of the Doctor?
- 15:41You can try. Well, what did you think about?
- 15:44The sequence between McCoy and Aldred where they're talking
- 15:47about the explosives that she uses here.
- 15:50I was just trying to teach you good habits, never without fair
- 15:59warning. I don't know where you're you're
- 16:03putting him in the Highlands, but he sounds like Jamie in the
- 16:06Highlanders. Yeah, I've had your teeth.
- 16:12Better than that. Yeah, race.
- 16:16Hammer Dukes. You're right, Hen if we'd have
- 16:23talked like that, I'd have loved.
- 16:25It it's, yeah. It doesn't seem to bear any
- 16:31relation to anything that we've ever seen on screen, but fair
- 16:35enough. He does tell a rough a lot about
- 16:38using the Nitro 9, except when he needs her to use the Nitro
- 16:41Nine. I think that was the point.
- 16:42That, that, that was that was fun.
- 16:44I thought that was her best bit, actually, when she was talking
- 16:47to the 13th Doctrine said, oh, they are don't use explosives
- 16:52unless you tell me to. Yeah, right.
- 16:54Nothing's changed, yeah. Certainly.
- 16:59Oh God, you really could see the different acting styles though,
- 17:01couldn't you? Between an 80s actor and a
- 17:03Monday actor in that. I think this model shot
- 17:08explosion is fab. Oh God, yes, brilliant.
- 17:12And and you can you can tell it's a model, but it's it is
- 17:17really well done, but you get. The smoke and the flames, the
- 17:21CGI explosion, we're thinking that department store going up
- 17:24in rows. I mean, it just looks shocking,
- 17:26Didn't. It where they come.
- 17:35Yeah, I I, the sidemen have just been running around.
- 17:37Scared in this episode? Hardly the most brutal.
- 17:41Force in the universe. They killed them just because I
- 17:44blew up the ship. There are a lot more sparks
- 17:48there. The guns are doing their sparky
- 17:49thing again, aren't they? Well, what?
- 17:51Do you think about her going well?
- 17:52I'm really really. Scared, Doctor, because I reckon
- 17:55she's faced worse than the sidemen.
- 17:57It it it does, there's a bit in remembrance where they like
- 18:02stop. In the middle of a chase and
- 18:06they stopped by the TARDIS and she goes, oh, we could just nip
- 18:09in here and go or something like that, doesn't she?
- 18:11There's like a slightly weird thing where occasionally she's
- 18:14just like, oh, she's just bugger off on boarding now.
- 18:17Sold this for Game of Soldiers. They make a whole cliffhanger
- 18:20out of it and grey show in the Galaxy.
- 18:22Are we going in or aren't we? You know.
- 18:26You should be like, do you know what that one part next?
- 18:32Week song's a phrase that one part Doctor Who story was
- 18:35amazing. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:44Shall we visit the leisure hive? No.
- 18:49I also feel they'll try to do some sort of Nazi Cyberman
- 18:53parallel, but don't think it's coming off.
- 18:55We are the Superman. You are the giants.
- 19:01Oh dear. Why should we form an alliance
- 19:04with you? We had that leader once.
- 19:06He put it like, yeah. Can you remember in mine camp
- 19:08where Hitler writes about the Cyberman?
- 19:10I can't. Ask you.
- 19:12How did they? Yeah, 8/19/88 Silver giants from
- 19:16the stars. He was a visionary.
- 19:25And he'll come down in a very pedestrian directed way, very
- 19:31pedestrian. You insult us.
- 19:37See. Look, they're taking it
- 19:38personally now. Accept, destroy the woman in her
- 19:44sense. In the extended version there's
- 19:47a. A bit where they'd like.
- 19:49It's all a bit of a double bluff and they want to convert the
- 19:53Flores and I think most of that is just sort of cut from the
- 19:57isn't. He just wearing a pair of
- 19:59headphones though. Yes, the.
- 20:02Cheapest conversion he's. Listening to the Wimbledon
- 20:04scores coming through, Matt, Matt has won the match.
- 20:10We are invincible to your weapons.
- 20:16I love it. In a minute it's David Banks.
- 20:18Live reading of when he goes. Then where is the bow?
- 20:22He's. A sarky cunt.
- 20:26I'll tell you how this cyber leader.
- 20:31The Cyber Leader's like the best 80s villain isn't.
- 20:35It just like, Oh yeah, one of Yeah.
- 20:37What was that, Ross? Oh yeah, yeah.
- 20:40Actually, yes, you're right. And to be fair, I like the Amy
- 20:43Master in the Rodney Best, 4 Villains Best, 4 Recurring
- 20:47villains, one of the. Top Ten Villains.
- 20:50Of the What about Seal and the Devil Sees of Arador talking to
- 20:58Sophie Aldridge? I mean so.
- 21:02Can you try and explain the back story to me then please?
- 21:04So what? Why did he set the Nemesis off
- 21:06into space? Oh, OK.
- 21:11I I think so that it could keep coming back every 25 years and
- 21:15bugger things up. I don't.
- 21:16I I think he was trying to prevent it falling into the
- 21:19wrong hands or something, wasn't he?
- 21:21But. What?
- 21:22And as a by product, it came down and wiped out Kennedy.
- 21:25Yeah, and and like, of course, World War One and Two.
- 21:29So that's a bit of an own goal, wasn't it?
- 21:33I'm not sure. I'm not sure they thought
- 21:34through that bit of the scripture.
- 21:35It's like, so you just basically came the Doctor accidentally
- 21:38caused like World War 2 and Hitler.
- 21:44Yeah, let's skip over that bit. Everyone has an off day, you
- 21:47know. Kevin Clark's Like God moves in
- 21:50mysterious ways. I love it where she says they're
- 21:53carved in absolute evil. Not for nothing did I design my
- 22:01own tool. I often say that.
- 22:05I bet you do. Death is but a door.
- 22:09I always knew I cheated. No, he just bundles her out of
- 22:17the room, didn't he? Yes, drags her off.
- 22:21I like. I like the way she calls him.
- 22:22Feeble like she's Margaret Thatcher.
- 22:26Oh, that's right. So it feels like it's all coming
- 22:27to our head now because we feel like the three elements are
- 22:29together, because we think he's got the bow.
- 22:32Yeah. Oh, and that the the statue
- 22:35twitching under like cobwebs and stuff.
- 22:37That's. Brilliant.
- 22:38And when it comes out of all the explosions.
- 22:40And the Oh yeah. Over.
- 22:42It I think the statue is actually really sort of creepy.
- 22:45And yeah, but it's just a bit odd, isn't it?
- 22:49It's eerie in a way that you don't get many eerie Dr.
- 22:52Monsters, but it's like that, that blank.
- 22:56This sort of blank face there and the sort of dash of the
- 22:59mouth. It's the same thing with like
- 23:00the altar and things like that, isn't it?
- 23:02Like simile of the face rather, yeah.
- 23:05But but the like, the hair and stuff just make it even weird.
- 23:09And when it's like lit up and then just sort of floating
- 23:12around, it's just there's something actually reasonably,
- 23:17effectively otherworldly about it.
- 23:18It's quite. Cool.
- 23:19And just that how they did it as well.
- 23:21It's all lit up like that. I know it's.
- 23:24Fat, fat, fat, fat, fat, fat. They're fapping, fapping all
- 23:28night. Oh, I know, I know a little bit
- 23:31about that. You know, she's looking at,
- 23:36she's looking at that sort of bubble, hoping that the cyber
- 23:39war fleet will emerge. I don't think it says much about
- 23:43the peso that the pair of them are just sitting there looking
- 23:45bored. No looking at a lizard.
- 23:50They're shrouded. These little spaceships I.
- 23:54Thought that Salamander was telling us that he was back from
- 23:56enemy of the world. My God.
- 24:00Him as well, although this this war.
- 24:04Fleet has never been mentioned before.
- 24:09I know it's it's like, yeah, it's a bit.
- 24:12I'll tell you what it is right is that this is done with such
- 24:14energy and humour and fun, but it does feel like someone's just
- 24:18written the script as they've gone along.
- 24:19Well, that'd be fun. Let's do that.
- 24:20Or that'd be fun. Oh, I'll throw in a cyber
- 24:23awfully. That'll be great.
- 24:25But it kind of, it kind of has to be there for the next episode
- 24:30because they're doing the whole, the whole thing of like wiping
- 24:33out the dialects, wiping out the Cyber Men, kind of, yeah, I.
- 24:36Have seen that plot somewhere before, you know.
- 24:39It was just a few weeks earlier. Fortnight.
- 24:42Ago. See again, though, it does get
- 24:44that line reading. Brilliant, he goes.
- 24:45Saba warships, They were invisible.
- 24:50No, they're not. They're not invisible.
- 24:55They were there, that whole. Time you can see that.
- 25:03OK, well now look, I'm going to ask you another unfair question
- 25:06at the end of Episode 2. Yeah, I like doing this too.
- 25:08It's Bob would. OK, Can you please give me
- 25:14because I know this is an area you love.
- 25:18What are your top three Sylvester McCoy stories?
- 25:26My top three McCoy would be. Yeah, it's not like tedious my
- 25:35my favorite three probably slightly different than the best
- 25:38three, but I think the best three are clearly going to be
- 25:40Remembrance, Survival, and in the past I would have said The
- 25:49Curse of Fenerick, but I really wasn't massively impressed by
- 25:53the TV version of when I when I was watching it when I was doing
- 25:56the Watch 3. The Curse of Fenerick Special
- 25:59Edition is much better, so I would go.
- 26:01Remember and Survival. Probably greatest show of the
- 26:05three best, but my favorite is some announces.
- 26:09Yeah, that's a good answer. And just for the record, mine
- 26:12are and I'm not taking the piss, Time in the Ronnie, Greatest
- 26:17Show in the Galaxy and Ghost Light.
- 26:21I just so many good ones. I mean, it is it is genuinely 1
- 26:24where you're spoiled for choice. It's like you you don't
- 26:26necessarily get that with. I used to think there was one
- 26:30duffer a year. I used to think it was Dragon
- 26:31Fire, Silver Nemesis, and Battlefield.
- 26:34Well, Dylan Reece has recently convinced me that Dragon Fire is
- 26:39astonishing. You're doing a fantastic job
- 26:41with Silver Nemesis, And my other half turned me to
- 26:43Battlefield, so now I don't think there's a dub there.
- 26:46I I I love Battlefield. Yes, I think I remember watching
- 26:54it at the time, but then they did the like 1990. 2 Repeats and
- 26:58they'd like Time Meddler and the mine droplet.
- 27:01And it was the McCoy that they picked for those repeats.
- 27:04And I really, really enjoyed it on the rewatch.
- 27:07How about Matt? Looks like we get the deck
- 27:09chair. I love powerful.
- 27:12What's it? So you married or what?
- 27:13What do? You want.
- 27:17I'll cut it there. I'll cut it there.
