- 0:05podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:13you by that great news podcast. Why should you listen?
- 0:17Because good news should be heard.
- 0:20And the link is in the show notes.
- 0:23Today's quote is widely attributed to Michelangelo.
- 0:26Sculptor, painter, architect and the poet of the Italian
- 0:31Renaissance, the man behind the Sistine Chapel painting, the
- 0:35statue of David, and some of the most breathtaking works of human
- 0:39creation ever produced. The original source of the quote
- 0:43can't be 100% verified to Michelangelo, but as you'll
- 0:47hear, no one in history lived its truth more completely.
- 0:52And it goes like this. The greater danger for most of
- 0:55us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it
- 1:00is too low and we reach it. This quote is profound because
- 1:06it inverts the fear most of us carry through our entire lives.
- 1:10We are terrified of aiming too high, of reaching for something
- 1:14beyond our current capability and falling short, of being seen
- 1:18trying and failing, of the gap between ambition and outcome
- 1:23being visible to others. That fear is so powerful and so
- 1:28pervasive that most people quietly negotiate their dreams
- 1:32downward before they've even begun setting targets they know
- 1:38they can reach. Pursuing goals that won't
- 1:41embarrass them if they achieve less.
- 1:43Building a life sized carefully to avoid the specific pain of
- 1:48falling short. And Michelangelo, or at least
- 1:52the wisdom attributed to him, is saying that's the wrong fear
- 1:56entirely. The danger isn't the miss.
- 2:00That danger is the reach that was never attempted, the aim
- 2:04that was set so low that achieving it left everything
- 2:07that mattered most untouched. Consider what Michelangelo
- 2:11himself chose to aim at. He undertook projects of almost
- 2:14incomprehensible ambition, years of relentless, solitary effort
- 2:19on the Sistine Chapel, lying on scaffolding, painting above his
- 2:24head until his neck and eyes filled him.
- 2:27He could have aimed lower. He could have produced work that
- 2:30was merely excellent rather than transcendent.
- 2:33Nobody was forcing him toward the ceiling of possibility.
- 2:37He chose that. And here's what the low aim cost
- 2:41that most people never calculate.
- 2:43Not just the outcome, but that person.
- 2:47When you set your aim deliberately within what you
- 2:50already know you can achieve, You don't grow, you can form.
- 2:56You arrive at the destination exactly the same person who set
- 3:00out. No larger, no more capable, no
- 3:03more alive, and no way to know what you're actually capable of.
- 3:09A low aim reaches a kind of comfortable stagnation dressed
- 3:13up as success. A high aim mist is something
- 3:17completely different. Even in the missing, even in the
- 3:22falling short, you become someone you weren't before.
- 3:27Your capacity expands in the attempt.
- 3:30The distance between where you started and where you fell short
- 3:34is ground you now occupy that you didn't before.
- 3:38As conductor Herbert von Karjen said, those who have achieved
- 3:43all their aims probably set them too low.
- 3:47The full achieved goal is its own confession.
- 3:53The miss at least proves you were aiming at something worth
- 3:56going for. So here's the question where in
- 4:00your life are you? Quietly negotiating your aim
- 4:03downward, not because of the higher target was impossible,
- 4:07but because falling short felt more frightening than ever.
- 4:11Attempting it at all because the wisdom attributed to
- 4:14Michelangelo isn't asking you to be reckless.
- 4:17It's asking you to be honest about which fear is actually
- 4:21more dangerous. Falling short of a high aim?
- 4:25Build something. Reaching a low one confirms
- 4:29nothing. Aim higher.
- 4:31The miss is better than the mark.
- 4:34That's going to do it. For today, I'm Andrew McGivern,
- 4:37Signing off for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:43Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
