- 0:08Speaker 1: Marlin's reliever Tyler Phillips with us right now. Wow, great
- 0:12Speaker 1: hat dude.
- 0:13Speaker 2: How you doing on the ship. I'm the captain now,
- 0:16Speaker 2: Captain Phillips, you know.
- 0:21Speaker 3: So good as looking for his prop too, I'm looking
- 0:24Speaker 3: for mine.
- 0:25Speaker 4: I don't I think I got rid of it. Actually
- 0:26Speaker 4: I think I got rid of it. I threw it away.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Guys, it's great to have you. Did you just have
- 0:33Speaker 1: that sitting around? Or is this part of like a
- 0:36Speaker 1: are they doing a giveaway?
- 0:38Speaker 5: It was yesterday that a give away. I like to
- 0:41Speaker 5: grab them. I have like four of them in my
- 0:42Speaker 5: locker right now.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Wow.
- 0:46Speaker 6: Is it a yacht rock? Was it yacht rock Day?
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah? It was yacht rock Day? Smart man, yacht rock Day.
- 0:52Speaker 6: Who's your favorite yacht rocker?
- 0:55Speaker 3: H m hm.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Honestly, I don't know. Does John Mayer count? Like he
- 1:01Speaker 2: doesn't even count.
- 1:02Speaker 6: Slap yourself, slap yourself.
- 1:06Speaker 7: He slaps himself to get ready. That's not a punishment.
- 1:08Speaker 6: I don't know. He needs to learn these things. He
- 1:10Speaker 6: needs to learn if you're going to.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Rock the hat rock, that's what he is. That's me.
- 1:16Speaker 4: You got at least know Christopher Cross, I mean, come on,
- 1:18Speaker 4: I mean he's in every song.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I know, I know, you put me on the spot.
- 1:21Speaker 2: You put me on the spot.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Kenny Loggins was a yacht rocker before he became popular.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's on me.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Sorry, guys, you're good, You're good, You're young, and you're
- 1:33Speaker 1: a little busy right now. So tell us what's going on.
- 1:37Speaker 1: How is the team looking? And yes, I want to
- 1:39Speaker 1: know about any runnings you've had with Joe Mack. Did
- 1:42Speaker 1: you spend time with him in spring training at all?
- 1:45Speaker 5: I spent a lot of time with Joe. He actually
- 1:48Speaker 5: he caught every one of my bullpends off. He's not
- 1:50Speaker 5: forced him to, obviously, when you're up here, like you
- 1:55Speaker 5: you know what's going on down the lower levels, you
- 1:57Speaker 5: know who's good.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It's huge prosper act.
- 2:01Speaker 5: So once I met him at I met him at
- 2:03Speaker 5: my gym in the off season, and I just told him, hey, like,
- 2:06Speaker 5: you're probably gonna be up at some point soon, so
- 2:08Speaker 5: you're going to catch me every time, like I don't care.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Like Liam Hicks was there too, but he's seen me.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Uh So I wanted to get Joe acclaman and he
- 2:15Speaker 5: always answered the call early in the morning. He was
- 2:18Speaker 5: there catching me and uh did everything I asked, so
- 2:21Speaker 5: unbelievable worker, like hard worker. I heard that he needs
- 2:26Speaker 5: to work on his communication skills when it comes to
- 2:28Speaker 5: answering the phone.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I'm surprised he even made it here today.
- 2:31Speaker 5: But uh yeah, he's He's been great so far, and
- 2:35Speaker 5: I think he has a good understanding for me at least.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Well, tell us more about the communication skills. It totally
- 2:41Speaker 3: just ambushed my real question, Like he doesn't answer his phone.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I heard that that.
- 2:47Speaker 5: I heard that he would have been probably called up
- 2:49Speaker 5: three years ago if he would be answering his phone more.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that's three.
- 2:55Speaker 6: I mean, what is he is?
- 2:56Speaker 2: He is?
- 2:56Speaker 3: He does he live in the eighties, Like like it's
- 2:58Speaker 3: not like you have to call like a low hotel phone.
- 3:00Speaker 7: He just doesn't.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I think he's I think he's a big gamer man.
- 3:04Speaker 5: I think he likes to likes to play the game
- 3:06Speaker 5: here and there, a game that I don't agree with.
- 3:09Speaker 5: But you know that's a that's that's a different story.
- 3:13Speaker 5: I think he just like, isn't good on his phone,
- 3:15Speaker 5: is what I heard. He always answered me, so I
- 3:16Speaker 5: had no issue with him.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Okay, so so you guys were at Kressy. I'm assuming
- 3:20Speaker 3: with my guy Jake Bruno and and Liam Hicks was there.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Dude, Jake Bruno, that's a name right there. He's my
- 3:28Speaker 5: triple A bullpen catcher. Love that guy.
- 3:31Speaker 6: Bruno.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Bruno's the assistant coach at the high school that I
- 3:34Speaker 3: coach at. So Bruno's my my guy. He was down
- 3:37Speaker 3: at Kressey with you. What does all of that mean
- 3:41Speaker 3: for a young guy like Joe Mack or even a
- 3:43Speaker 3: guy like it's not like Liam Hicks is like a
- 3:46Speaker 3: you know, Cagy Vett. What does it mean to be
- 3:49Speaker 3: around those kinds of guys in the offseason? Do you
- 3:51Speaker 3: think that increases their level of readiness for when they
- 3:55Speaker 3: get to the big leagues or is it just kind
- 3:57Speaker 3: of like, well that's what everybody does now, they go
- 3:59Speaker 3: to Kressy and around everybody.
- 4:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think for sure it increases it
- 4:05Speaker 5: from the standpoint of like you're around season vets. You know,
- 4:08Speaker 5: like some of the big names that are there early
- 4:10Speaker 5: in the morning. I mean, you got Sures or of
- 4:12Speaker 5: Berland or all these guys. I think Joe caught a
- 4:16Speaker 5: few of them. But you can't show up late, you
- 4:18Speaker 5: can't mess around, like those guys are very meticulous about
- 4:23Speaker 5: what they're trying to do with their craft and their
- 4:24Speaker 5: bullpens as well, and there's constant communication between the catchers
- 4:28Speaker 5: and all the all the pitchers thrown in there. So
- 4:31Speaker 5: I think it just gives you a little bit more
- 4:34Speaker 5: sense of like being comfortable once you get here. I
- 4:37Speaker 5: know that's I know that could be controversial, like people
- 4:40Speaker 5: don't like it's the big leagues.
- 4:41Speaker 2: You have to earn it.
- 4:42Speaker 5: But I do want my catcher to show up and
- 4:45Speaker 5: not be timid, and I want him to come to
- 4:47Speaker 5: me and try to ask me what pictures I'm looking
- 4:48Speaker 5: for and what my tendencies are. So I think being
- 4:52Speaker 5: around those guys and just catching bullpens constantly throughout the
- 4:56Speaker 5: day and hearing all of these different ideas from guys,
- 4:59Speaker 5: I think that it's super valuable for them.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Thoughts on when when you're talking to a catcher and
- 5:08Speaker 1: communicating with one during this time period now with the Marlins,
- 5:12Speaker 1: how he's getting calls from the dugout. How does that
- 5:14Speaker 1: whole process work when a guy is coming up here
- 5:17Speaker 1: now for the first time.
- 5:20Speaker 5: Yeah, that's that's a different one man, Because in between innings,
- 5:25Speaker 5: I tend to go to the coach. Now, Rob in
- 5:27Speaker 5: there and I'll just ask him about calls and I'll
- 5:30Speaker 5: tell him what I was thinking. But it's really good
- 5:33Speaker 5: when the catcher, if he's not up to bad obviously,
- 5:36Speaker 5: it's really good that they get into that conversation as well,
- 5:38Speaker 5: and we just kind of spit all together because at
- 5:41Speaker 5: the end of the day, like the coach, Rob, he's
- 5:43Speaker 5: gonna he's gonna put his suggestion down, Catcher's gonna call it.
- 5:47Speaker 5: And if I'm shaking, like with the pitch clock now,
- 5:50Speaker 5: like I need those guys to be on the same
- 5:52Speaker 5: page as me and know who I'm who I'm going
- 5:54Speaker 5: to be throwing the curveball to. Let's say so, it's
- 5:57Speaker 5: a lot of a lot of conversation, but the catchers
- 6:01Speaker 5: and Rob are talking constantly. I'll talk with them, Like
- 6:04Speaker 5: even Ramirez yesterday, like he came out he was hitting.
- 6:08Speaker 2: He said, hey, I don't know what you and Rob
- 6:10Speaker 2: talked about, but what do you want to do here?
- 6:13Speaker 5: So, I mean it's it's a little different, but uh,
- 6:17Speaker 5: Robing them are always they're always on top of it.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Let's talk love, life, ft family. I know it's an

- 7:18Speaker 6: Tyler's that way.
- 7:19Speaker 4: You have an Apple Watch on so you can get
- 7:20Speaker 4: the calls right now, so you can get the steps.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Oh so still a curveball, So still a curveball here.
- 7:28Speaker 5: Just I've been asked, I've been asking them to give
- 7:31Speaker 5: me my own PitchCom but yeah, I should just use
- 7:34Speaker 5: this right.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Yeah, you could do like college where all the college
- 7:37Speaker 4: kids have the wristband and they just all go like
- 7:39Speaker 4: this all the time, and they're like.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Oh, herdball.
- 7:42Speaker 6: Okay. That's maybe changs a lot, which is fine.
- 7:48Speaker 4: But I find it interesting that Ramiro just they had
- 7:51Speaker 4: to come ask you what you and the coach talked about.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Now he's in triple A, so maybe you should have questions.
- 7:57Speaker 2: That is a tough one. I think he was.
- 7:58Speaker 5: I think he was on deck or up the back,
- 8:00Speaker 5: and I think he saw me go over and talk
- 8:02Speaker 5: to him. I just had some questions about some ideas
- 8:05Speaker 5: that I had during a net bat.
- 8:07Speaker 2: I think ultimately I agreed with what Rob was calling, but.
- 8:11Speaker 5: I gave him what my backup plan would have been,
- 8:13Speaker 5: and I just wanted to see what he thought and
- 8:14Speaker 5: why he went to something, because I'm I'm constantly trying
- 8:17Speaker 5: to learn myself, and you know, it's.
- 8:20Speaker 2: It could be as simple as I do. I don't
- 8:21Speaker 2: know that was your fifth pitch, like I don't.
- 8:23Speaker 5: I don't think you should be going out there and
- 8:26Speaker 5: throwing Bryce Harper your your forcing fastball, which is metrically
- 8:30Speaker 5: not great, and it's your fifth pitch.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I want you to go get him with your best stuff.
- 8:33Speaker 5: So you know, there could be a little overthinking on
- 8:36Speaker 5: my end, But like I said, there's conversations. A lot
- 8:39Speaker 5: of it happens with the pitchers and Rob now and
- 8:43Speaker 5: Rob will talked with the catchers as well, but if
- 8:46Speaker 5: they're around, it's a it's a three way talk.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Have you ever come out of the bullpen and been like, man,
- 8:52Speaker 3: I just I don't I don't really feel like I'm
- 8:54Speaker 3: spinning my curveball.
- 8:55Speaker 7: Well, I don't feel like the ball's coming out?
- 8:57Speaker 3: Well yes or no?
- 8:59Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 9:00Speaker 3: I have yeah, okay, so do you have a do
- 9:02Speaker 3: you have a signal? Do you have a signal to
- 9:04Speaker 3: the bench guys for seamer no bueno today?
- 9:09Speaker 7: Like, how do they know? All they're going is by paper?
- 9:14Speaker 3: Says his four steamers was hit up and away to
- 9:17Speaker 3: Bryce Harper because he can't touch ninety five plus up
- 9:20Speaker 3: and away. So we're gonna stay out of here.
- 9:22Speaker 7: And you're like, my arm is killing me when I
- 9:24Speaker 7: try to extend up and away. Let's go with the curveball.
- 9:27Speaker 7: Oh wait, no, pitch clock's over ball one.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Yeah, that's the thing they can get a little finicky
- 9:32Speaker 5: with it is obviously they're not the one receiving the ball.
- 9:36Speaker 5: I have seen the catchers give them a look and
- 9:39Speaker 5: like like no, like I want this one. So like,
- 9:41Speaker 5: for example, my splitter one game, it was the only
- 9:44Speaker 5: pitch that I had in the zone that was working,
- 9:48Speaker 5: and I think they were trying to get to some
- 9:49Speaker 5: other pitches and I just I didn't have any of them,
- 9:51Speaker 5: and I don't remember who was catching, but I could
- 9:54Speaker 5: see them like kind of urging like no, we're gonna
- 9:57Speaker 5: go with the splitter regardless.
- 9:59Speaker 2: It's not a dictator here.
- 10:01Speaker 5: I knew what pitch was working, so I was going
- 10:04Speaker 5: to shake to get to that splitter anyway. And whoever
- 10:07Speaker 5: it was catching, I think they could sense that as well.
- 10:09Speaker 5: So even if I did shake, they were going straight
- 10:11Speaker 5: to it and you could see that we were on
- 10:13Speaker 5: the same page as well.
- 10:17Speaker 2: So so yeah, I mean that is where it gets
- 10:20Speaker 2: a little difficult.
- 10:21Speaker 5: But I think they also have like in game reports
- 10:23Speaker 5: where they can see what pitches in the zone, and
- 10:26Speaker 5: like you said before, it's just a little difficult when
- 10:28Speaker 5: it comes to the pitch clock now, but again that's
- 10:31Speaker 5: on me to have ownership of what I want to throw,
- 10:33Speaker 5: and I'm just gonna have to shake.
- 10:35Speaker 3: I know we asked you this before, and I'll probably
- 10:37Speaker 3: ask you again. The ninth inning doesn't matter. We did
- 10:41Speaker 3: a whole segment about the fact that there's less saves
- 10:45Speaker 3: across the game now than there ever has been the
- 10:48Speaker 3: ninth inning. Are those three outs exactly the same as
- 10:52Speaker 3: when you get the same hitters in your lane that
- 10:55Speaker 3: the sheet says, Okay, Tyler Films is supposed to come
- 10:58Speaker 3: out of the pen, regardless of where Pete are Banks
- 11:00Speaker 3: is this is his lane. Is it the same getting
- 11:03Speaker 3: those three hitters in the ninth.
- 11:04Speaker 2: In I think the sensors are just a little heightened.
- 11:09Speaker 5: You can you can like feel that feel that saved
- 11:12Speaker 5: under your belt, you know. But I mean, when it
- 11:16Speaker 5: comes to me, my role is I'm very I'm a
- 11:18Speaker 5: very versatile picture. You know, I've started, I've I've closed,
- 11:21Speaker 5: I've been length. We're trying to preach with me is
- 11:25Speaker 5: just say, man, like, if it's ten to nothing, if
- 11:27Speaker 5: it's if it's a one run game, like you're going
- 11:29Speaker 5: out there treating it like it's zero zero. I do
- 11:32Speaker 5: think that the adrenaline is through the roof. I mean,
- 11:35Speaker 5: I think when we were in La, I came in,
- 11:40Speaker 5: Pete had a little issue. I came in basis loaded.
- 11:42Speaker 5: He came out with the with the injury. I didn't
- 11:45Speaker 5: feel good. I think I was one day off of
- 11:47Speaker 5: like forty seven pitches, you know, trying to get out
- 11:51Speaker 5: of it, and then through again the next day in
- 11:53Speaker 5: the ninth and again arm wasn't feeling great, but the
- 11:56Speaker 5: villa was.
- 11:57Speaker 2: It was pomping out there.
- 11:58Speaker 5: So uh, I think just the fact that the hitters
- 12:02Speaker 5: feel it at the end of the game, those guys,
- 12:04Speaker 5: like even I it's the heart of the lineup, They're
- 12:06Speaker 5: going to try to be a little bit more scrappy.
- 12:09Speaker 2: So yeah, like the senses are definitely heightened.
- 12:12Speaker 5: But for myself, it's whatever inning is, whether it's the
- 12:15Speaker 5: first or the ninth. Like I'm coming in there and
- 12:17Speaker 5: treating it like it's the ninth.
- 12:20Speaker 3: When they make a closer routine for you because you
- 12:24Speaker 3: do close or you do the f you throw the
- 12:27Speaker 3: first or the seventh, should you only have that routine
- 12:31Speaker 3: when you're out there closing a game. It's only a
- 12:33Speaker 3: ninth inning and doors open, you need your routine.
- 12:38Speaker 5: I mean, I do the same thing every single day.
- 12:41Speaker 5: I'm not a show up late like in the third
- 12:43Speaker 5: or fourth inning. Guy, I'm out there first pitch. I
- 12:47Speaker 5: start getting ready on the third inning, and you kind
- 12:50Speaker 5: of just watch the game.
- 12:52Speaker 2: I'll have a general idea.
- 12:54Speaker 5: Of what relievers we have that are up and down
- 12:57Speaker 5: based off of who through the day before. But you know,
- 13:00Speaker 5: I'm like I said, I'm trying to be ready from
- 13:03Speaker 5: first pitch on.
- 13:03Speaker 2: You never know what's going on. I don't think the
- 13:05Speaker 2: routine would change at all.
- 13:07Speaker 5: It just the timing of which I do It might
- 13:10Speaker 5: be a little different, but yeah, I'm getting going from
- 13:14Speaker 5: the third inning on and just doing little things here
- 13:15Speaker 5: and there, just staying ready to keep an eye on
- 13:18Speaker 5: the game.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Grats.
- 13:20Speaker 1: I think we might have created it for him too,
- 13:22Speaker 1: where it's like you get the I am the captain
- 13:25Speaker 1: now line from the movie and then he comes out
- 13:29Speaker 1: to whatever, what's your song?
- 13:32Speaker 2: It's Mother by Danzig, So there we go.
- 13:36Speaker 6: You need to change.
- 13:37Speaker 4: You need to go to like smack that or smack
- 13:39Speaker 4: my bleep up something like that.
- 13:40Speaker 2: That wouldn't be bad.
- 13:44Speaker 5: Honestly, I've I've tried to get them to do some
- 13:46Speaker 5: like openers before I come out of the gate and
- 13:49Speaker 5: put some funny stuff on there.
- 13:50Speaker 2: But you know, he can't. He can't really do a
- 13:53Speaker 2: lot of the stuff that I want to do, you know, PG.
- 13:57Speaker 7: Thirteen choreographed.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I don't like that. I'm so used to
- 14:01Speaker 2: the clubhouse. I just want to. I want to. I
- 14:05Speaker 2: want to be a little crazy out there. I wish
- 14:08Speaker 2: it could be.
- 14:09Speaker 1: I wish they could be like, you know, like a
- 14:11Speaker 1: quick disclaimer before it starts, like like like old school
- 14:14Speaker 1: when you're watching like thebo and they're like, hey, like
- 14:17Speaker 1: this content, blah blah blah.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Here's they used to have topless dancers. They used to
- 14:23Speaker 3: have topless dancers at Loane Depot. If somebody can do it,
- 14:26Speaker 3: you know, Tyler Phillips now entering the game, Tyler Phillips
- 14:30Speaker 3: and just hear muffs everybody under that.
- 14:33Speaker 5: I do have a pretty cool like video that we
- 14:37Speaker 5: took on media day where I am slapping myself and
- 14:40Speaker 5: then I run past the camera. I don't I don't
- 14:42Speaker 5: know if they if they want to show that to
- 14:44Speaker 5: children or whatever. I've been trying to talk to them,
- 14:47Speaker 5: but honestly, it's not a bad idea.
- 14:49Speaker 2: I might I might see if they could put like, hey, you.
- 14:52Speaker 5: Know, like a parental advisory thing up on the up
- 14:55Speaker 5: on the board. That would be kind of sick, even
- 14:57Speaker 5: if it's not for me, even if it's for Pete
- 14:58Speaker 5: when he's back.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Hey, let's just put that up. I think that's kind
- 15:02Speaker 2: of intanmiditing, and.
- 15:02Speaker 1: To be honest, I think it would be I really
- 15:05Speaker 1: like that. All of that stuff is entertaining now and
- 15:08Speaker 1: we need it.
- 15:08Speaker 2: We need it.
- 15:09Speaker 1: The TV audience too, that's not there, so.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Well, good luck that is what goes. We'll be looking
- 15:13Speaker 2: for it. Dude. Yeah, we're entertainers. That's what I That's
- 15:16Speaker 2: what I want to see.
- 15:17Speaker 5: Like we're ball players, but we're also entertainers, so I
- 15:20Speaker 5: want it to be fun.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I'm glad you understand that that's an important part, and
- 15:24Speaker 1: I think we're getting into that more and more as
- 15:26Speaker 1: a sport.
- 15:27Speaker 2: So keep doing your thing. Captain Phillips, good to see you.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Thanks for the time. As always, we appreciate it. Yeah,
- 15:34Speaker 2: Sarah appreciate you. Guys.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Hey, we're excited for this one. Joining us LIB right
- 15:46Speaker 1: now is Sarah Edwards, who has had a really cool
- 15:48Speaker 1: journey through the game, and by the game, I mean
- 15:50Speaker 1: softball and baseball. Former Phillies coach, also the first woman
- 15:54Speaker 1: to be an on field coach in Asian Pro Baseball,
- 15:56Speaker 1: among many other accolades. Sarah, it's great to have you
- 15:59Speaker 1: on here and thank you for joining us. Can you
- 16:02Speaker 1: give our fans like a little more context on your
- 16:04Speaker 1: journey through the game so far.
- 16:07Speaker 8: Yeah, thank you guys, and nice to mutual.
- 16:11Speaker 2: So.
- 16:11Speaker 8: I'm from Long Island.
- 16:13Speaker 9: I played Division one softball at Buffalo and then at
- 16:16Speaker 9: Hopstra and then started my overseas softball journey, got my
- 16:20Speaker 9: Italian passport to be on the Italian national team, and
- 16:24Speaker 9: played about five years of overseas ball before getting noticed
- 16:28Speaker 9: by a Phillies recruiter on LinkedIn because I was doing
- 16:31Speaker 9: a lot of coaching in my travels, coaching for the
- 16:33Speaker 9: clubs that I was playing for, and just kept my
- 16:35Speaker 9: LinkedIn up to date, and that's kind of how I
- 16:37Speaker 9: got picked up by them, had my first I'm in
- 16:40Speaker 9: pro Ball Pro Baseball with them, and then coached in
- 16:44Speaker 9: the Japan Winter League. During that time, I was also
- 16:48Speaker 9: a recruitment manager for Baseball Jobs Overseas, which is an
- 16:51Speaker 9: online international recruitment service for players and coaches who want
- 16:56Speaker 9: to go around the world like I did, and so
- 17:00Speaker 9: at the Japan Winter League. That's how I got acquainted
- 17:03Speaker 9: with the manager of the CPBC Brothers, and that's how
- 17:07Speaker 9: I got the job as a hitting coach in Taiwan.
- 17:10Speaker 3: All right, start playing or coaching, because you kind of
- 17:13Speaker 3: did both. You play, you coach at the same time.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Most people go playing, playing, playing, and then only coaching.
- 17:20Speaker 7: And for me, I say, thank.
- 17:22Speaker 3: God, I'm not playing anymore because there's a lot going
- 17:25Speaker 3: on when I'm playing.
- 17:26Speaker 7: But for you, playing or coaching, which is better?
- 17:30Speaker 9: Ooh, that's a tough one, I think. I mean, I
- 17:33Speaker 9: like bouncing back and forth. I know that that's very unorthodox,
- 17:36Speaker 9: but it kind of I just assess whatever opportunities are
- 17:42Speaker 9: presented to me at the time and then pick the
- 17:43Speaker 9: one that seems more fun. So sometimes that's coaching, sometimes
- 17:46Speaker 9: that's playing. But I really enjoy both a lot. I
- 17:49Speaker 9: think that going from one to the other makes me
- 17:52Speaker 9: better on both sides of it. Like I think having
- 17:55Speaker 9: still kind of a player mind makes me a better coach,
- 17:59Speaker 9: and also so being able to coach and really keep
- 18:02Speaker 9: learning and reinforcing my beliefs makes me a better player
- 18:05Speaker 9: when I go back to to strapping the cleats on.
- 18:08Speaker 9: So for now, like, I'm turning thirty this year. I'll
- 18:11Speaker 9: keep doing it probably for the next couple of years,
- 18:13Speaker 9: and then eventually we'll have to be forced to just
- 18:17Speaker 9: coach because my body will not be able to handle
- 18:19Speaker 9: it anymore.
- 18:21Speaker 6: Now, you're still young.
- 18:23Speaker 10: Play as long as you can, Play as long as
- 18:24Speaker 10: you can. Yeah, so you've been all right, So you've
- 18:27Speaker 10: been You've obviously been in the States, and then you've
- 18:30Speaker 10: been in Europe and in Asia, so you've seen you've
- 18:33Speaker 10: seen our sport in three different really parts of the world.
- 18:36Speaker 10: Do you see differences in European baseball and softball and
- 18:40Speaker 10: in Asian baseball and then in the States, Like, do
- 18:43Speaker 10: you do you see differences between how the countries play
- 18:46Speaker 10: and which one would you say you prefer?
- 18:50Speaker 9: Of course, Yeah, there's a lot of differences. In Europe,
- 18:53Speaker 9: it's very much at an amateur level for the most part,
- 18:56Speaker 9: like the local players, unless they're on the national team
- 19:00Speaker 9: and have really made a name for themselves in this game,
- 19:03Speaker 9: they go to school or they work and then you know,
- 19:06Speaker 9: in the European leagues, we play on the weekends to
- 19:08Speaker 9: kind of accommodate that.
- 19:09Speaker 8: In Asia it's a lot more advanced.
- 19:11Speaker 9: It is a professional level, you know, Japan, Korea, Taiwan,
- 19:16Speaker 9: but they are technologically a little bit still behind compared
- 19:19Speaker 9: to the game in the States. Also, just the players
- 19:24Speaker 9: are different. Their style of play is a little bit different.
- 19:26Speaker 9: There aren't as many power hitters. There's nobody hitting forty
- 19:30Speaker 9: homers in a season, so the game play itself is
- 19:35Speaker 9: adjusted for that.
- 19:36Speaker 3: And of course, all right, switching from baseball to softball,
- 19:41Speaker 3: softball to baseball, is that difficult because I have a
- 19:44Speaker 3: seventh grade daughter and I coach my son's high school team,
- 19:49Speaker 3: and there's sometimes Now if you remember being a thirteen
- 19:52Speaker 3: year old girl, your dad knows nothing. I know nothing, Dad,
- 19:56Speaker 3: you don't even know softball, So what are you even
- 19:59Speaker 3: talking about?
- 20:00Speaker 7: But how hard is that? Like transition back and forth?
- 20:06Speaker 9: I think at first I was in denial of it,
- 20:09Speaker 9: and I was like, the swing is the swing. It's
- 20:10Speaker 9: all the same, you know, like pitching is different, but
- 20:12Speaker 9: the swing is the same. But I think, you know,
- 20:14Speaker 9: if you're comparing men and women, we have a different
- 20:17Speaker 9: center of mass. We obviously have different muscle mass and
- 20:20Speaker 9: things like that. And the bat is lighter in softball,
- 20:23Speaker 9: so you do swing it differently. You can move weight differently.
- 20:29Speaker 9: So it took me a long time to admit, like, Okay, yeah,
- 20:31Speaker 9: they are very different sports. But I do think that
- 20:34Speaker 9: like earlier, you know, with the Phillies, when I first
- 20:37Speaker 9: started out, I think my strongest point was that I've
- 20:40Speaker 9: been in the box with the game on the line
- 20:42Speaker 9: and things like that. So like the mental part of
- 20:44Speaker 9: it was the same for me and still is. So
- 20:48Speaker 9: I think when I go back and forth between softball
- 20:50Speaker 9: and baseball, there are physical adjustments to make, but I
- 20:53Speaker 9: still feel like the same player inside.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:00Speaker 3: No, I mean I think that's I think that's awesome.
- 21:02Speaker 3: I think that's a that's a good I'm gonna actually
- 21:05Speaker 3: I'm actually clip that and I'm gonna send it to
- 21:07Speaker 3: my daughter, so it might give me a little bit
- 21:10Speaker 3: of street cred, but it's making me sound like I'm
- 21:12Speaker 3: listening to her also nice.
- 21:16Speaker 8: Yeah, it was the same way. I think if you
- 21:21Speaker 8: could get out and.
- 21:22Speaker 9: Somehow play men's softball, you might be able to walk
- 21:26Speaker 9: in her shoes a little bit better, and then I
- 21:28Speaker 9: think she would maybe respect.
- 21:29Speaker 2: You for that.
- 21:31Speaker 10: I like that, all right, Sarah, So let's take us
- 21:36Speaker 10: let's let's let's talk about ten years from now. Sarah Edwards.
- 21:40Speaker 10: Everything goes exactly how you have it drawn up to go,
- 21:44Speaker 10: exactly how you want it to go. Where where is
- 21:46Speaker 10: Sarah Edwards in ten years? What's your dream job? Where
- 21:49Speaker 10: do you Where do you want to be? Where are
- 21:50Speaker 10: you're aspiring to get to?
- 21:54Speaker 8: Dang, that's so tough.
- 21:55Speaker 9: I never was someone to have like a five year,
- 21:58Speaker 9: ten year plan or anything like that, But you know,
- 22:00Speaker 9: I have aspirations and I just hope to be somewhere
- 22:03Speaker 9: that I feel like I belong and I feel like
- 22:05Speaker 9: I'm contributing to something really great and bigger than myself,
- 22:09Speaker 9: a winning environment.
- 22:10Speaker 8: I want to stay in the game, whether it's baseball
- 22:12Speaker 8: or softball. I don't know, but.
- 22:16Speaker 9: Maybe, like I think, you know, I've won championships in
- 22:20Speaker 9: my career, and I consider myself a winner, and I
- 22:23Speaker 9: know what it takes to win, especially on the mental side,
- 22:27Speaker 9: which I think is why I've been able to survive
- 22:29Speaker 9: in this game for so long, even without the resources
- 22:32Speaker 9: and everything that that baseball has, like softball really lacks
- 22:37Speaker 9: a lot.
- 22:38Speaker 8: And so I think as a forty year old.
- 22:42Speaker 9: I would be happy with maybe a head coaching position,
- 22:44Speaker 9: whether it's at the collegiate level or professionally and just
- 22:48Speaker 9: somewhere that we're all just pulling in the same direction
- 22:51Speaker 9: to win a championship.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Hey, Sarah, can you give us more context on the
- 22:59Speaker 1: Phillies and how that when and what you learned and
- 23:02Speaker 1: you know who you're able to work with their.
- 23:06Speaker 8: Yeah. I loved my time with the Phillies.
- 23:09Speaker 9: I obviously was very green and had a lot to learn,
- 23:12Speaker 9: and I think I stepped in it the right way
- 23:15Speaker 9: knowing that I had more to learn than to give.
- 23:19Speaker 9: But the funnest part for me was just mingling with
- 23:22Speaker 9: the Latin players and learning Spanish and learning how the
- 23:25Speaker 9: game is different to them and how passionate they are
- 23:28Speaker 9: about it, and they just they still play like little
- 23:30Speaker 9: kids because they are They're like, you know, they play
- 23:33Speaker 9: like they're ten years old even though they're eighteen, nineteen twenty.
- 23:38Speaker 9: And actually Felix Reyes, who I saw is on the
- 23:41Speaker 9: thirty Man right now for the Phillies, he was he
- 23:44Speaker 9: was one of my rookies, so that's really cool to see.
- 23:49Speaker 8: But I learned.
- 23:54Speaker 9: Basically, we had Luke Merton as our hitting director at
- 23:57Speaker 9: the time, and he put forth a nominal system for
- 24:01Speaker 9: us to kind of get these kids just to learn
- 24:04Speaker 9: a little bit more and becomes more students of the game,
- 24:07Speaker 9: because at that point, a lot of those Latin players,
- 24:09Speaker 9: they just were so raw and they're so talented, but
- 24:12Speaker 9: they don't they weren't used to thinking for themselves yet.
- 24:15Speaker 9: So just kind of giving them the building blocks to
- 24:19Speaker 9: become more autonomous like players and be able to continue
- 24:24Speaker 9: throughout their whole careers with a good base of knowledge.
- 24:27Speaker 6: All right, Sarah.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Last one, the FCL where you were had to be hot,
- 24:31Speaker 3: so if you had a good time, you were sweating.
- 24:34Speaker 3: I appreciate it that you're still smiling about that experience.
- 24:37Speaker 3: But I have to ask you. When my daughter's team,
- 24:40Speaker 3: when they get hit by a pitch, I always say,
- 24:43Speaker 3: it's okay, it's a.
- 24:45Speaker 7: Softball, and it's still hurts.
- 24:49Speaker 3: So getting hit by getting hit by a baseball and
- 24:52Speaker 3: getting hit by a softball, which, by the way, I
- 24:54Speaker 3: have played in the men's league. In my very first
- 24:57Speaker 3: at bat, I hit a danger so it was not
- 24:59Speaker 3: slow pits fast pitch, but my dad, I've been around
- 25:02Speaker 3: fast pitch softball for a long time. My dad pitched
- 25:04Speaker 3: for thirty years. So anyway, is it a little bit
- 25:09Speaker 3: softer than a baseball?
- 25:13Speaker 8: No, I think it.
- 25:14Speaker 9: I think softballs are harder than baseball technically, but why
- 25:17Speaker 9: are they called why?
- 25:20Speaker 8: I think they were maybe at one point.
- 25:22Speaker 7: Soft Okay, well witness.
- 25:26Speaker 9: Either way, we got to eat it. You can't, you
- 25:29Speaker 9: can't show pain. You got to eat it no matter what.
- 25:35Speaker 2: I love it.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Yeah, well, krat, We're not changing the name of the sport. Sarah,
- 25:38Speaker 1: You're great. Thank you so much for joining us. Great
- 25:40Speaker 1: to learn more about what you're doing, and for anyone
- 25:42Speaker 1: watching follow Sarah on social media to to kind of
- 25:45Speaker 1: see her path through baseball, softball, playing, and coaching. Appreciate you, Sarah,
- 25:49Speaker 1: Thank you, Thank you guys,
