- 0:08Speaker 1: Okay, Well, one thing we didn't talk about on Wednesday,
- 0:10Speaker 1: a sad week for the dribblers, as the patron saint
- 0:14Speaker 1: of No Dribble has died, Bonnie Tyler. It's a heartache.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Nothing but a heartache hits you when it's too late,
- 0:21Speaker 1: hits you when you're down. Barlet Bonnie Tyler, You're on No.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Dribble strap in.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Hello and on that sad start. Welcome to No Dribble,
- 0:41Speaker 1: the podcast where we talk about neck ball, we talk
- 0:43Speaker 1: about so much more. I'm Carolyn Swindell.
- 0:48Speaker 2: M and I'm Sue Gordian.
- 0:49Speaker 3: I extended my trip in Bali for an additional day.
- 0:53Speaker 4: Your soul.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Well, we appreciate you were coming back Thursday.
- 0:56Speaker 5: But Carolyn, I'm glad it was Bonnie Tyler not Darren
- 1:01Speaker 5: Hinch also died this week, and I thought, that's.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Yes, Darren Hitch is not the patron saint. There was
- 1:11Speaker 1: a bit of a ship stir of though, so you know,
- 1:13Speaker 1: maybe but true, Yes, did you guys ever have hair
- 1:17Speaker 1: like Funny Tyler's?
- 1:18Speaker 4: Oh no, what did you not try for the big
- 1:23Speaker 4: tease fringe?
- 1:24Speaker 2: And did you tease that?
- 1:25Speaker 6: No?
- 1:26Speaker 2: Only when I was at KLOSENICX.
- 1:28Speaker 4: You must have had a perm.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I had a perm, but I didn't it wasn't teased
- 1:32Speaker 3: up like that. I had a perm, but not a
- 1:35Speaker 3: not teased So what sort.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Of perm did you have, like a perm like sort
- 1:41Speaker 1: of straight on the top and then curly around the edges.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Or no, god, no, no, no, no no, it was no,
- 1:47Speaker 3: like I don't know like that.
- 1:49Speaker 4: That's pretty close the barley beach hair.
- 1:53Speaker 5: We were talking about and calisthenics the other day though,
- 1:56Speaker 5: did you have the little like did you have a
- 1:59Speaker 5: leotard and stuff?
- 2:01Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 2:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I did kelosenics for seventeen years. Seventeen years. I
- 2:06Speaker 3: started when I was Yeah, I this is what people,
- 2:09Speaker 3: well some of the dribblers will know, because I noticed
- 2:11Speaker 3: a few people writing that they knew mum.
- 2:12Speaker 2: So yeah, and I did kelosenics. I started when I
- 2:15Speaker 2: was two.
- 2:15Speaker 3: You're supposed to start when you're three, but when you're
- 2:17Speaker 3: the teacher's daughty, you can start earlier.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And then I wait, what.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Do you mean you're supposed to start when you're three?
- 2:23Speaker 1: What type of Eastern European nineteen eighty two training regime
- 2:28Speaker 1: is this? Like?
- 2:29Speaker 2: Oh, I know, I know, well it gets worse Soviet kids.
- 2:35Speaker 3: I wasn't flexible at all, and Mum would get on
- 2:37Speaker 3: your back and push you down, and oh god, anyhow,
- 2:42Speaker 3: my hamstrings I can tell you they've never been the same.
- 2:45Speaker 3: But yeah, I went to the AIS and then I
- 2:47Speaker 3: even when I came back from the AIS, I went
- 2:49Speaker 3: back and did one or two more years, I think.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Can you for those of us the uninitiated, yeah, good,
- 2:57Speaker 2: what is kelosenics? Yeah? For the it's like you explain
- 3:01Speaker 2: it to us.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it's so it's like, oh god, like it's routines
- 3:06Speaker 3: to music. But you're like it's a team, right, So
- 3:09Speaker 3: but you do things like marching free Arm Rods dance
- 3:14Speaker 3: Farm but free Arm. So like, you know, I'm terrible.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I can't explain calthen Like ready, okay, you know what,
- 3:24Speaker 3: go and google calosenics. Like when you watch it at
- 3:26Speaker 3: the elite, like like anything in sport, it is unbelievable,
- 3:31Speaker 3: like insane. So they you know, you have like ballarats
- 3:34Speaker 3: like where you go for the main championships and you know, yeah,
- 3:38Speaker 3: blah blah blahs like what because and again, all you
- 3:43Speaker 3: Calosenic people out there that no more than me, please
- 3:45Speaker 3: feel free to write jop down what all this is?
- 3:48Speaker 3: About but Ballarat because it's where they have the theater.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I can't remember what the theater's called, but yeah, it's
- 3:54Speaker 3: always just been where they used to go for like
- 3:56Speaker 3: you'd have all competitions, so you'd learn all your routines,
- 3:59Speaker 3: and then you'd competitions and then you'd go to the
- 4:02Speaker 3: comps and then eventually go to like the main competition.
- 4:05Speaker 3: It just was in Ballaratu and so you go away
- 4:06Speaker 3: for the weekend and it'd be there's a lot like
- 4:09Speaker 3: the makeup and the leg ten and the like. And
- 4:12Speaker 3: I used to run from a netball court, so like
- 4:14Speaker 3: obviously I started netball late.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I was only I think I was fourteen or something
- 4:18Speaker 2: when I started playing.
- 4:19Speaker 1: You were two and a half when you started netball.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Two and a half when I.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Yeah, so, and I would literally play a game and
- 4:26Speaker 3: like I'd have a broken finger, Like I remember actually
- 4:28Speaker 3: one game in particular, I was playing outside. I'd fallen over,
- 4:33Speaker 3: I had gravel rashed down my left leg and I'd
- 4:35Speaker 3: broken one of my fingers, and I was like, and
- 4:38Speaker 3: then the competition happened to be the comps were actually
- 4:43Speaker 3: right next door to where the courts were, so in Ashburton,
- 4:47Speaker 3: so I was playing at the Ashwood netball courts and
- 4:49Speaker 3: then it was at the Ashburton stage like whatever, and
- 4:54Speaker 3: I remember going across, running across. After I'd finished playing,
- 4:57Speaker 3: I had blood going down my leg and a broken
- 4:58Speaker 3: bloody finger.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I knew deadss never got fixed. It's terrible. And I
- 5:03Speaker 2: went in and Mum just looked at me like she
- 5:06Speaker 2: was like this, look.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Right, and she's just like, well, no, leg, ten's going
- 5:12Speaker 3: to cover that, and then like broken finger, you should
- 5:14Speaker 3: try and spilt like rods and clubs with a broken finger.
- 5:17Speaker 2: But I never said tikety boo because my.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Mom my mom would have let me know about it.
- 5:24Speaker 3: So yeah, I'd go and i'd go and complete straight
- 5:26Speaker 3: off a netball court.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Would she have stopped you playing their No?
- 5:30Speaker 3: No, no, no no, I mean look like, do you
- 5:33Speaker 3: know what I actually And it took me a long
- 5:36Speaker 3: time to appreciate this. So I'm not a real Calosenics person.
- 5:42Speaker 3: People that meet me would A lot of people on
- 5:44Speaker 3: this are going to.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Go, oh my god, yes we are.
- 5:48Speaker 2: But I yeah, but I.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Have very good timing rhythm stage right, so you can imagine.
- 5:55Speaker 2: So I just wasn't overly flexible, but I was.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I was very good at calosenics, but not at the
- 6:02Speaker 3: level of like being able to be flexible, Like flexibility
- 6:05Speaker 3: is a key thing, but I smashed everything else. But
- 6:09Speaker 3: for my coaching, it's unbelievable because I've grown up understanding patterns,
- 6:15Speaker 3: like I see patterns on a netball court as a coach,
- 6:18Speaker 3: and in calosenics, patterns are really significant. So you you know,
- 6:23Speaker 3: you're always shaped, you know, it's part of calosenics, like
- 6:26Speaker 3: formations and you know you move to a different pattern
- 6:29Speaker 3: and all these sorts of things, and so you know,
- 6:32Speaker 3: like from the age of two, Mum has had a
- 6:34Speaker 3: massive influence on the way that my brain has shaped,
- 6:38Speaker 3: and then it's transferred into my coaching even to this
- 6:40Speaker 3: very day.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I just see I'm a patent coach. Yeah you know this.
- 6:44Speaker 5: Explains though, because if you're at the No Dribble Live
- 6:47Speaker 5: event pre Grand Final and Gordy was ripped off the
- 6:51Speaker 5: stage into a dance off with the mob man and
- 6:55Speaker 5: she picked that up very quickly, didn't she?
- 6:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Well you do know that she'd
- 7:01Speaker 1: been sent the moves in advance, Yes, I know now.
- 7:04Speaker 4: But still had then got it down her.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I reckon the three of us and Liz would go
- 7:15Speaker 1: as a little calisthenics troop.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Yeah, no good, no, seriously, And I heard I heard
- 7:21Speaker 3: you guys talking about it last week. I think where
- 7:24Speaker 3: Liz mentioned when we did the Centurions, I dragged them
- 7:27Speaker 3: in to Cherelle, Cath and Liz with Mum to practice
- 7:32Speaker 3: a routine and ah my god, and I did when
- 7:36Speaker 3: I hopped in the car with Mum, or when I
- 7:38Speaker 3: saw Mum, Mom's like, oh my, and she said, oh,
- 7:41Speaker 3: Liz is terrible, but.
- 7:46Speaker 4: This depends great good at everything.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Yes, no, that's why it's fun to hear that there's
- 7:54Speaker 1: something she's not good at.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Liz Ellis knows she's been asked to do dancing with
- 7:59Speaker 5: the stars at the times, and she's like, oh, wouldn't
- 8:01Speaker 5: embarrass myself.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I can't dance.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, she lacks a little bit of the rhythm.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Charrelle's got Charrell's got rhythm. Charrelle picked it up very easy.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Kath can apply herself. And I didn't think was too bad,
- 8:14Speaker 3: but Liz was, Oh yeah, Liz was hard to watch.
- 8:21Speaker 4: So you love it when they're not here to.
- 8:26Speaker 3: It was so funny watching Mum try to coach them
- 8:29Speaker 3: through what we were doing.
- 8:30Speaker 2: It was just hysterical mad.
- 8:32Speaker 5: Liz Ellis feel better about herself after a little something
- 8:35Speaker 5: that happened to me this morning. So Harper was allowed
- 8:38Speaker 5: to go in and watch.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Like YouTube or whatever. I do no dribble this morning.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Anyway, she jumps on and she likes to watch the
- 8:45Speaker 5: dogs singing in agt and stuff like that, or the
- 8:48Speaker 5: rehearsals and the.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Auditions whatever they call.
- 8:51Speaker 5: Anyway, she goes to fetch some stuff up and she goes,
- 8:55Speaker 5: Nanny's been watching you play Nepple and I was like,
- 8:58Speaker 5: really anyway, So we clicked on one of the games
- 9:01Speaker 5: and started watching it. So Harp was watching it for
- 9:03Speaker 5: a while in silence, and then she turns around to
- 9:05Speaker 5: me and goes, you're not actually very good, And I
- 9:09Speaker 5: said okay. She said, what does everyone carry on about? Like?
- 9:14Speaker 4: I thought you were way better, but you're not actually
- 9:16Speaker 4: very good.
- 9:17Speaker 5: I said, I've never I've never. This is legit, right,
- 9:20Speaker 5: I said, I've never said I was the best buddy,
- 9:23Speaker 5: like at all.
- 9:24Speaker 4: And she goes, I thought you were like Annie Lives
- 9:26Speaker 4: and I said good, no, Annie Lis is the goat.
- 9:31Speaker 4: This conversation went back.
- 9:32Speaker 5: And forth for age and she goes.
- 9:34Speaker 4: I honestly thought you were so much better than this.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, been there in that conversation and been
- 9:42Speaker 1: able to say, Catherine, I'll feel these questions, thank you
- 9:46Speaker 1: very much, because you've been way too humble there. And
- 9:52Speaker 1: as everyone knows, I mean, no one listened to this
- 9:54Speaker 1: podcast needs needs me to explain what a bloody legend
- 9:57Speaker 1: you are. But oh man, that's that. That's some brutal
- 10:01Speaker 1: reality checks and looking.
- 10:03Speaker 5: Forward to the team is Oh I know, but to
- 10:06Speaker 5: the point that I almost wanted to search up. You know,
- 10:07Speaker 5: I'm trying to think in my game.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Which game was really good stuff?
- 10:10Speaker 5: And just threw the point to what am I doing?
- 10:12Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 10:13Speaker 4: What am I doing? Step back?
- 10:16Speaker 3: You need you need to show it. You know where
- 10:18Speaker 3: you need to show it. You need to show it.
- 10:20Speaker 3: When you came to Fever, I reckon you were the
- 10:24Speaker 3: most ripped I'd ever seen you.
- 10:26Speaker 2: When you were at Fever.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Yeah, you were playing goal attack like they're a photo.
- 10:32Speaker 3: You were like you were ripped, that you were insane.
- 10:36Speaker 3: You really show her that. She would be shocked.
- 10:39Speaker 5: Now.
- 10:39Speaker 4: I just don't think anything's going to bring me back.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Also, she could just shut her pie hole. Frankly, you know,
- 10:44Speaker 1: come on, that's that's outrageous.
- 10:47Speaker 5: So Liz Ellis is up here, Pat Cubs is even
- 10:51Speaker 5: further down than where she was before after this one.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Well, if we were going to talk about hard to watch,
- 10:57Speaker 1: maybe Gordy could coach me in a in a goal
- 10:59Speaker 1: circle at some stage and then she could walk away.
- 11:02Speaker 1: And so that was hard to watch, but it's interesting.
- 11:05Speaker 1: So remember my mate Andrew Barnette who came along and
- 11:09Speaker 1: opened our show in Penrith with some comedy like he's
- 11:13Speaker 1: got two teenage boys, and he said he never performs
- 11:17Speaker 1: worse than when his kids are coming along to see
- 11:20Speaker 1: him like that, it's just And he opened for Jim
- 11:23Speaker 1: Ohen once and one of his kids was there and
- 11:25Speaker 1: it wasn't that great. And Jim Owen came out and
- 11:27Speaker 1: said to Barney's son, I don't know, he's really really
- 11:31Speaker 1: good usually, oh, but just having his kids there him
- 11:38Speaker 1: made him nervous because there's no harsher critic.
- 11:42Speaker 3: That's an occupational hazard for the comedian, isn't it. I
- 11:46Speaker 3: just wouldn't take the kids.
- 11:47Speaker 1: It's like every so often you're just going to get
- 11:50Speaker 1: up on stage and it's what we call eating shit
- 11:53Speaker 1: because that's basically what it feels like for the time
- 11:55Speaker 1: that you're up there.
- 11:58Speaker 2: I had an eating shit moment.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I'm putch Wood. I'm very lucky in that I've had
- 12:06Speaker 1: shows where I've come off and gone. I didn't love that,
- 12:09Speaker 1: but I've never had one where I've come off and
- 12:12Speaker 1: gone that that was an absolute Desiresta. You know, I've
- 12:18Speaker 1: come off and gone. I was the worst on the
- 12:21Speaker 1: line up tonight, but you know, still managed to get
- 12:24Speaker 1: some musk. But what's interesting, I record every set that
- 12:27Speaker 1: I do and I listen back because invariably, if I
- 12:31Speaker 1: come off and go, I am a god of the
- 12:34Speaker 1: comedy world. When I listen back, the audience's reaction is
- 12:38Speaker 1: not as good as I felt. And if I come
- 12:40Speaker 1: off and go that's the worst set I've ever done,
- 12:43Speaker 1: the audience reaction is much better than I was hearing
- 12:45Speaker 1: at the time. So so much of what's happening in
- 12:48Speaker 1: that moment is what's going on in your head, not
- 12:50Speaker 1: actually what's happening in the room.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Yeah, when you come off and you think that you haven't,
- 12:54Speaker 5: like it wasn't your greatest performance, can you tell straight
- 12:57Speaker 5: away like is it all reliant on last for you
- 13:00Speaker 5: or can you tell, like my timing was off or yeah.
- 13:04Speaker 1: So you absolutely feel it in the moment, because so
- 13:07Speaker 1: much of the energy that you get as a stand
- 13:11Speaker 1: up comedian comes from what the audience gives in now.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Quite often if they're quiet, they're still enjoying it, and
- 13:18Speaker 1: that sort of. So we'll often as comedians, have watched
- 13:21Speaker 1: the audience for one another a little bit and just go, no,
- 13:24Speaker 1: they were there, you had them. They were just a
- 13:26Speaker 1: quiet audience. So a good MC will get up at
- 13:29Speaker 1: the beginning and will not only warm them up, but
- 13:31Speaker 1: we'll tell the audience your job is to laugh out loud.
- 13:35Speaker 1: They will do their job better if you do your
- 13:37Speaker 1: job right. But you know, it's not we're not it's
- 13:41Speaker 1: not TV, so you can't be sitting having a chat
- 13:43Speaker 1: because we can definitely hear. But it's also it's not
- 13:46Speaker 1: the buddy symphony orchestra where you have to sit quietly
- 13:49Speaker 1: and politely. So a good MC really briefs the audience
- 13:54Speaker 1: well about here's what you'll get a better experience out
- 13:57Speaker 1: of this if we all follow follow these guidelines.
- 14:02Speaker 4: So and no one's ever heckled you.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Oh you might get heckled all the time, but you
- 14:06Speaker 1: know it's not. It's I think it's fallen out of
- 14:10Speaker 1: fashion a little bit. Often audiences will turn on one
- 14:13Speaker 1: another that if there's someone who's really trying to hijack
- 14:16Speaker 1: the show, the audience will turn on that person. So
- 14:20Speaker 1: I've been on that person. Well, yeah, to a certain degree.
- 14:23Speaker 1: But actually it's better in most instances, unless it's someone
- 14:27Speaker 1: who you go, this is actually fun and we're all
- 14:30Speaker 1: going to enjoy it, you're better off to try to
- 14:33Speaker 1: minimize that and let everyone else in the room get
- 14:38Speaker 1: on with what they were there for, which is not
- 14:40Speaker 1: listening to some clown who's had a few too many
- 14:43Speaker 1: drinks and thinks, hey, I'm funny. So generally, what I
- 14:47Speaker 1: will try to do is acknowledge that they're talking, but
- 14:51Speaker 1: sort of just move on, I guess, belittle the move
- 14:54Speaker 1: them back into their box just a little bit without
- 14:56Speaker 1: without shaming them, because then they'll come out even harder,
- 14:59Speaker 1: but sort of make a bit of a joke about
- 15:01Speaker 1: it and then move on and that sort of one.
- 15:03Speaker 1: But generally, if someone is hell bent on derailing, the
- 15:07Speaker 1: audience will turn on them, and that's it's really interesting
- 15:11Speaker 1: and so really yeah, often people will escort themselves out
- 15:14Speaker 1: once the rest of the has turned on them.
- 15:17Speaker 2: But I'm not ape any ball. You know how you
- 15:20Speaker 2: said you watch it when you go home. I listened
- 15:22Speaker 2: to it. I don't. I don't video everything. Okay, do
- 15:25Speaker 2: you laugh.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Rarely? Because I know what's coming up, so so more
- 15:32Speaker 1: of yeah, I will if it's something that I sort
- 15:36Speaker 1: of that was an improv thing or whatever. Sometimes I
- 15:39Speaker 1: might get a little bit of a laugh out of it.
- 15:43Speaker 1: But you know, I don't laugh out. I know my jokes,
- 15:46Speaker 1: but so you know, I just wonder whether you still laugh.
- 15:50Speaker 1: But it's actually it's really funny when you're telling a
- 15:53Speaker 1: joke that goes well all the time and then one
- 15:56Speaker 1: audience doesn't laugh, where the last ninety nine audiences have laughed,
- 16:01Speaker 1: and it's like, hey, you guys, no that was you.
- 16:04Speaker 6: You mean It's like, no, that was me.
- 16:06Speaker 1: I ice, clearly I screwed it up. And it's each interesting.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Sometimes you'll see a comedian hang shit on the audience
- 16:13Speaker 1: and go you groat audience, and it's like, well, it's
- 16:16Speaker 1: your job to make them last.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Ye oh, god, fascinating.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Should we have a little break and come back and
- 16:24Speaker 1: talk about the netball?
- 16:25Speaker 2: Here?
- 16:25Speaker 1: Yes?
- 16:29Speaker 7: Turn every now and then I get a little bit
- 16:34Speaker 7: nornely and you never coming around, turn around every now
- 16:39Speaker 7: and then I get a little bit child listening to
- 16:43Speaker 7: the sound of my dear round every now and then
- 16:47Speaker 7: I get a little binnerse that the best of all
- 16:50Speaker 7: the years have gone by road every now and then
- 16:55Speaker 7: I get a little bit terrify them.
- 16:57Speaker 8: Then if you don't look in your eye.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Na time.
- 17:08Speaker 8: Ever again, dream of some way.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Well, Gordie, you're having a teensy holiday now, which, thanks
- 17:30Speaker 1: to the magic of audio, actually finished yesterday. But here
- 17:33Speaker 1: we are on a Friday talking to you, and you
- 17:35Speaker 1: are just a few short days away from getting on
- 17:38Speaker 1: a plane, and we don't need to go through the
- 17:41Speaker 1: economy class thing and Carolyn having short leads and not
- 17:44Speaker 1: needing to have a worried about we don't we don't
- 17:46Speaker 1: need to go over that ground again. But you're flying
- 17:50Speaker 1: to Glasgow on Monday.
- 17:54Speaker 2: No, when on Wednesday? Wednesday? On Wednesday?
- 17:57Speaker 4: Yeah, and then you start Friday.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Yeah, so hold on so Land Thursday Friday rehearsal and
- 18:06Speaker 3: then I'm doing a coaching workshop Friday night for the
- 18:09Speaker 3: Scottish coaches.
- 18:12Speaker 2: A bit of a side gig yep high cast.
- 18:14Speaker 3: No not with Cat Tetley like we've coaches, you know,
- 18:18Speaker 3: like a coaching workshop. Yeah, gotcha, and then start Saturday
- 18:25Speaker 3: three games.
- 18:26Speaker 2: It's a it's a hectic schedu Cat.
- 18:28Speaker 3: As you know, the last time we did it well
- 18:31Speaker 3: when we did Brisbane Gold Coast sorry when we dig
- 18:34Speaker 3: Gold Coast. Yeah, like you just it's it's a huge,
- 18:37Speaker 3: it's the workload's huge.
- 18:39Speaker 2: It is huge.
- 18:40Speaker 1: So three games a day for sort of a days.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Ish No, So this the way the fixture works is
- 18:47Speaker 3: the first two days there are three sessions yep. And
- 18:53Speaker 3: then so yep, so that's I'm just thinking Saturday, Sunday
- 18:57Speaker 3: and then i think Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday at two sessions
- 19:00Speaker 3: and I think I'm two or three games a day
- 19:04Speaker 3: on that, and then Thursday goes back to three sessions
- 19:09Speaker 3: and then then finals. Finals is less because you have
- 19:12Speaker 3: your your qualifications yep. And then obviously if you're in
- 19:19Speaker 3: the top four, you that becomes a rest day and
- 19:22Speaker 3: then you then then there's the metal games.
- 19:25Speaker 4: So so you're a minimum of two games a day.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, I think like, no, that's my max
- 19:31Speaker 3: is three games ye my personally for me.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Yeah, So there's six teams in each side of the drawer.
- 19:37Speaker 1: There's two sides to the draw, six teams each. They
- 19:40Speaker 1: all play each other, so they've all got they've all
- 19:44Speaker 1: yet five games, is that right? And then is it
- 19:47Speaker 1: the top three from each pool?
- 19:50Speaker 2: Top two?
- 19:52Speaker 5: Ye?
- 19:52Speaker 3: Which is which is why Australia's pool I think is
- 19:56Speaker 3: tough because when well it is, it's tough because there's
- 20:00Speaker 3: no guarantees for any country, right So but we always
- 20:03Speaker 3: have this great confidence in that Australia will finish one
- 20:06Speaker 3: or two. But they have England and South Africa in
- 20:11Speaker 3: that pool, and I think that that, like you know,
- 20:14Speaker 3: I'm all eyes on South Africa this tournament. I actually
- 20:17Speaker 3: genuinely feel like they are on the rise. I think
- 20:21Speaker 3: their systems over there are getting much better. You know,
- 20:24Speaker 3: their scouting's going well. I think you know, their league
- 20:27Speaker 3: over there is vastly improved, standard wise. I think their
- 20:31Speaker 3: current coach is seems to be the right fit. And yeah,
- 20:36Speaker 3: so I just think there's some real interest in South Africa.
- 20:39Speaker 3: And so I want to say that whilst you know,
- 20:43Speaker 3: I feel like Australia will finish one or two, but
- 20:45Speaker 3: I think England need to be really careful.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I think they're going to you know they're going to
- 20:49Speaker 2: have to.
- 20:50Speaker 5: Well, England lost that series to them, didn't they at
- 20:52Speaker 5: the start.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Of the year.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, And you know there was sort of
- 20:55Speaker 3: a lot potentially behind that. But what it irrespective of
- 20:59Speaker 3: what is behind that, what England did is they gave
- 21:04Speaker 3: South Africa confidence, and confidence is a big beast in
- 21:08Speaker 3: the world of international netball, right, So I feel like
- 21:11Speaker 3: South Africa going to this tournament feeling pretty confident that
- 21:14Speaker 3: they could potentially take England and find themselves in one
- 21:19Speaker 3: or two. And then that becomes the crossovers. So then
- 21:22Speaker 3: you've gotten the other pool. Potentially it'll be New Zealand
- 21:25Speaker 3: and Jamaica. I don't know if there's as much challenge
- 21:29Speaker 3: in that pool as there is in Pool A.
- 21:31Speaker 2: And so then they'll have one v two in the crossovers.
- 21:35Speaker 3: So Pool A one plays Pool B two, and the
- 21:39Speaker 3: winner of that, yep, the crossovers, and then the winner
- 21:42Speaker 3: of those two games the crossover games go straight into
- 21:47Speaker 3: the gold medal game and the losers play for the
- 21:49Speaker 3: bronze medal.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Okay, wow, it's pretty brutal. It's pretty brutal.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it's actually makes it makes the the it makes
- 22:00Speaker 3: the rounds a little interesting. I think, you know, sometimes
- 22:03Speaker 3: we've been through tournaments and you're kind of like, you know,
- 22:07Speaker 3: it can be long, whereas I feel like, you know,
- 22:09Speaker 3: like I was thinking on day two Australia play England,
- 22:11Speaker 3: I'm like, I can't wait.
- 22:12Speaker 2: I'm calling that game.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Can't wait to call that game, right, And then when
- 22:16Speaker 3: you get to that crossovers, you know, they're brutal games.
- 22:20Speaker 3: And I remember that last year at the not last year, Craig,
- 22:23Speaker 3: he's a couple of years back at the World Cup
- 22:25Speaker 3: in South Africa where Jamaica had.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Beaten Australia during the rounds and then.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Got into the crossover game and Australia had to beat Jamaica, yes, to.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Go into the gold medal game.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Oh and Australia has never not played in a gold
- 22:46Speaker 3: medal game. Like, so can you imagine the weight on
- 22:49Speaker 3: the shoulders of those players. I was calling that game
- 22:52Speaker 3: and I felt physically ill for everybody in.
- 22:56Speaker 4: The semi final is by far the more stress full game.
- 23:00Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, because you don't want.
- 23:02Speaker 4: To be Australian team never to make it through.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Yeah, And I felt like in watching it, like if
- 23:07Speaker 3: you can recall this game, so Steph would absolutely stole
- 23:12Speaker 3: the show in this game. She was a genius and
- 23:16Speaker 3: played her little heart out.
- 23:20Speaker 2: And when Australia won, and I just was.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Like, like Australia one because of Steph Wood in that game,
- 23:26Speaker 3: it was it was insane. But when it got into
- 23:29Speaker 3: the gold medal game, she didn't feature as much, but
- 23:31Speaker 3: she'd done her job in the most important you know,
- 23:33Speaker 3: like theoretically, in the most important game in the context
- 23:37Speaker 3: of that tournament, and so it was such it was
- 23:39Speaker 3: such a great game. And almost when you watched Australia
- 23:41Speaker 3: playing in that gold medal game against England, it was
- 23:46Speaker 3: almost like it was a training run, Like the weight
- 23:49Speaker 3: of it was almost like the pressure looked like it
- 23:52Speaker 3: was off their shoulders. That wouldn't have been the case,
- 23:54Speaker 3: and but they they were Yeah, God, that was a
- 23:57Speaker 3: that was a good tournament.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Enjoyed.
- 23:59Speaker 4: So what happened, Harper and tell her that I was
- 24:01Speaker 4: like Steph Wood, I was great.
- 24:03Speaker 5: In a rounds and then I just sucked in the
- 24:04Speaker 5: important games.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 24:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:10Speaker 6: AnyWho, you're ever worrying about your ego, have kids, I'm
- 24:15Speaker 6: excited to I started doing some research this week and
- 24:19Speaker 6: looking at some of the surnames of pronunciation.
- 24:22Speaker 4: So I m.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Jcob Wenda and Halita Bev and asked for them to
- 24:26Speaker 5: give me voice memos for all their team names, which.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Yeah, so good, send it three please. I'm a cat.
- 24:33Speaker 3: That first game, I yeah, the first game I call,
- 24:36Speaker 3: which like, is Austraight, It's Australian tongue, right, yes, I'm
- 24:39Speaker 3: pretty sure.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Yeah, Australia.
- 24:42Speaker 3: And I've got Cat to ivity alongside me, so I'm
- 24:45Speaker 3: like to she, I don't have to worry.
- 24:49Speaker 2: All the pronounciations.
- 24:50Speaker 4: I was going to.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Message Cat and ask her, but she always puts the big,
- 24:54Speaker 5: you know, the proper spin on it.
- 24:56Speaker 4: So I test Helena and I.
- 24:58Speaker 5: Said to her, if you can give me the Aussie version
- 24:59Speaker 5: of it, the amazing things so much.
- 25:03Speaker 1: I do love this though, because you know, growing up
- 25:06Speaker 1: in you know, watching rugby league through the eighties and
- 25:09Speaker 1: there are a lot of South Pacific Islanders playing, and
- 25:12Speaker 1: the commentators made no effort to and culturally it wasn't
- 25:17Speaker 1: like it was just the commentators who were doing it.
- 25:19Speaker 1: As a society, we just didn't make an effort to
- 25:22Speaker 1: get people's surnames correct and.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Just sort of oh too hard.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Whatever, I'll say it my way, or I'll give you
- 25:27Speaker 1: a nickname or whatever, and it's like, and now consistently
- 25:33Speaker 1: it is. You are hearing commentators in all sports trying
- 25:37Speaker 1: to get it right and really acknowledging that there is
- 25:41Speaker 1: a correct pronunciation that might be a little bit difficult
- 25:43Speaker 1: for your average ossie speaker, but it's well try you
- 25:48Speaker 1: know some way.
- 25:48Speaker 2: I reckon, I love it.
- 25:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 25:51Speaker 3: In terms of critical feedback, that's where you cop it
- 25:57Speaker 3: the most is when you don't pronounce one's name correct.
- 26:01Speaker 3: And I think I might have mentioned this on this
- 26:02Speaker 3: podcast before and I will remention it leading into the
- 26:05Speaker 3: Commonwealth Games. But when you do your research and Kath
- 26:10Speaker 3: has done what she's done or whatnot. But you can
- 26:13Speaker 3: go and ask a player how to pronounce their name
- 26:16Speaker 3: and they will tell you like they'll tell you and
- 26:21Speaker 3: they'll explain how they pronounce their name. But then they'll say,
- 26:25Speaker 3: it's okay if you just say it like this right,
- 26:28Speaker 3: because they know that might be easier. So you might
- 26:30Speaker 3: you've got approval of the person to go and pronounce
- 26:33Speaker 3: their name in.
- 26:33Speaker 2: That particular way.
- 26:34Speaker 3: And blah blah blah South Africa names some of the
- 26:38Speaker 3: fig names whatever. But then you still get abused because
- 26:41Speaker 3: someone's like, you know, blah blah blah. Yeah, like or alternatively,
- 26:46Speaker 3: you go to the team manager and you say to
- 26:48Speaker 3: the team manager, I was wondering if you could just
- 26:50Speaker 3: help me with pronunciations and.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Names she's got I don't know.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I can tell you that has happened so many
- 26:56Speaker 3: times at big tournaments where you go to the team yeah,
- 26:59Speaker 3: and then you can't even this is the thing I'm
- 27:02Speaker 3: worried about, caf IS And you know, hard for you
- 27:05Speaker 3: because you're calling it off a TV screen.
- 27:08Speaker 2: I'm there live.
- 27:09Speaker 3: But you know, like when you get to Malawi and
- 27:12Speaker 3: Uganda and their names are so long, yes, that they
- 27:17Speaker 3: minimize the font on the back of the dress to
- 27:20Speaker 3: fit the name of us.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Yes, And so you've got.
- 27:22Speaker 3: To get your bloody binoculars out, like you're calling the
- 27:24Speaker 3: AFL to even half the time know who the player is,
- 27:29Speaker 3: you know, because something like actually probably sixty to seventy
- 27:33Speaker 3: percent of the athletes that we're going to see at
- 27:34Speaker 3: this tournament are new to us.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:37Speaker 2: So it's a challenge, it's not it is a challenge.
- 27:40Speaker 2: It's not easy. It's not easy. We do our best,
- 27:42Speaker 2: we do our best.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Well I've been scrolling through trying to find a post
- 27:47Speaker 1: in the Facebook group from Daniel Yuli because and once again, Daniel,
- 27:51Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I will probably be butchering that. But last
- 27:54Speaker 1: week I talked about how unique Polavi's family give her
- 27:57Speaker 1: those lolly necklace is at the south of Scotlanders and
- 28:01Speaker 1: so it's common in the Samoan community and the Tonguan community,
- 28:05Speaker 1: and I butchered the pronunciation and Daniel was very kind,
- 28:10Speaker 1: but he said he'd make us fun sometime, which I
- 28:12Speaker 1: would love. But I think would Harper be impressed? Then
- 28:17Speaker 1: if you had a sports fan saying to you, I
- 28:21Speaker 1: will give you a lay a lolly of a lolly
- 28:25Speaker 1: necklace to acknowledge this achievement that you have done, but
- 28:29Speaker 1: you can't have any because you don't think I'm good enough.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Like maybe that would be.
- 28:34Speaker 5: I feel like I've got a fair way down now,
- 28:36Speaker 5: I've got some work to do, but that would help.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Yes, you know what, you're the coach of her team,
- 28:42Speaker 1: so I would be suggesting that you probably need to
- 28:45Speaker 1: get more targeted in your feedback with her.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Where is Harper put her on? We'll tell her.
- 28:54Speaker 3: So from here, we've got a LOLLI alas for you.
- 29:00Speaker 5: Quickly come over here, and Gordy wants to have a chat.
- 29:03Speaker 4: Gordy, Annie, Gordy wants to talk to you. Se your
- 29:06Speaker 4: head in.
- 29:10Speaker 2: High harps, high harps? Where are you dull?
- 29:14Speaker 3: I can't see you next see your face? Oh there,
- 29:19Speaker 3: I can see one eye. Hey, did you know how
- 29:22Speaker 3: good a netball player your mother was?
- 29:27Speaker 5: No?
- 29:29Speaker 2: A legend of the game, legend? Did do you? Do
- 29:33Speaker 2: you know that she was as good as Arnie Liz?
- 29:36Speaker 4: She said she wasn't.
- 29:39Speaker 2: She said she wasn't.
- 29:42Speaker 4: She wasn't.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Oh yeah, she was your mother.
- 29:46Speaker 1: International goal shooter of the Year five years in a row.
- 29:49Speaker 5: Gordy, yea, it doesn't. I need to get the chet
- 29:54Speaker 5: out again, anyone.
- 29:56Speaker 4: How'd that go down? Well or not? Well? She didn't.
- 30:00Speaker 1: She didn't seem that fuss to be on the podcast.
- 30:02Speaker 1: I've got to say we have we have other guests
- 30:04Speaker 1: who are more enthusiastic, and we'll come and be more
- 30:07Speaker 1: complimentary about you, Catherine. So Papa can come back and
- 30:11Speaker 1: try again when she's twelve. We'll re audition her at
- 30:13Speaker 1: that stage and see she's spat. She just didn't dribble,
- 30:17Speaker 1: if you know what I mean. So just before we
- 30:19Speaker 1: move off our netball segment CPA.
- 30:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I know nothing.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Well, I don't know. I think we all need to
- 30:30Speaker 2: have CPR, don't. We got no idea what's going on.
- 30:33Speaker 3: No, look, they're still negotiating, I think, chipping away at it,
- 30:38Speaker 3: and the great thing is chipping away at it quietly
- 30:41Speaker 3: in the background. So you know, historically this has always
- 30:43Speaker 3: been a bit of a nervous, noisy public period. I
- 30:47Speaker 3: think I saw the first article come out in the
- 30:50Speaker 3: Herald Sun potentially, but yeah, no, not not. I don't
- 30:55Speaker 3: know that we're close to shit, so it's probably gonna
- 30:57Speaker 3: take a little bit of a while, which.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Makes it tough.
- 30:59Speaker 3: But what what you can be assured of though, is
- 31:03Speaker 3: that there that doesn't really stop clubs, you know, having
- 31:08Speaker 3: the required discussions, and there's a general I think there's
- 31:11Speaker 3: a general feel around roughly where the CPA will land,
- 31:15Speaker 3: but there's just a little bit of detail that's got
- 31:17Speaker 3: to be worked through. So I think once that hopefully
- 31:22Speaker 3: gets done in the not too distant future, it will
- 31:25Speaker 3: really then just be a bit of a matter of
- 31:29Speaker 3: just getting contracts signed as such, because I think a
- 31:32Speaker 3: lot of what is being discussed in the background between
- 31:35Speaker 3: clubs is what normally happens irrespective of the CPA.
- 31:39Speaker 1: So does it pause for the Commonwealth Games or are
- 31:43Speaker 1: we looking at association is?
- 31:47Speaker 3: Yeah, But I like a couple of things, so like
- 31:51Speaker 3: I used to fear that myself when I was when
- 31:53Speaker 3: I was in the chair. But to be blattly honest
- 31:56Speaker 3: with you, the Ossie Diamonds players in particular, and I
- 32:00Speaker 3: guess a lot of the other players that are playing
- 32:04Speaker 3: at these tournaments, they have managers, and their managers are good,
- 32:08Speaker 3: like you know what I mean, Like they're not sitting
- 32:10Speaker 3: with idiot managers and it's the role of the manager,
- 32:12Speaker 3: and so the manager would know all too well they
- 32:15Speaker 3: either want to get confirmation locked away prior to them going,
- 32:19Speaker 3: or they won't disturb them while they're there.
- 32:21Speaker 2: So I would find it very of.
- 32:24Speaker 5: Course they will, like if it comes down to a
- 32:26Speaker 5: time crunch and they need a decision to make, they
- 32:29Speaker 5: have they.
- 32:29Speaker 3: Will I reckon a lot of the players, No cat,
- 32:33Speaker 3: I reckon a lot of those players will will have
- 32:36Speaker 3: made their decisions or no, Like I find that pretty.
- 32:40Speaker 3: I'm probably talking more Diamonds in my head. I mean
- 32:44Speaker 3: the Kiwi's English Gandon's like we've got all of them
- 32:47Speaker 3: in the league, right, But I reckon most of them
- 32:49Speaker 3: will will have tried to have made those decisions before
- 32:52Speaker 3: they start day one of the tournament.
- 32:55Speaker 2: But you know, that's that's the situation.
- 32:58Speaker 3: Everyone's best laid plans would have been to have had
- 33:00Speaker 3: the CPR locked away, but that's just not the case
- 33:03Speaker 3: and never is. And we're no different to any other sport.
- 33:06Speaker 2: This is all.
- 33:07Speaker 3: It's always a tough time. And if in the game,
- 33:10Speaker 3: is this a three year No, I don't reckon it.
- 33:13Speaker 3: I think it'll be a one year roll over, to
- 33:15Speaker 3: be honest with you.
- 33:16Speaker 1: That's which I guess makes sense because of the change
- 33:18Speaker 1: that's coming in broadcast next year and the like that
- 33:21Speaker 1: it will look like a very different competition next year
- 33:25Speaker 1: than what we have just seen.
- 33:27Speaker 5: Quick Ballpark, give me a just throw a number at me.
- 33:30Speaker 5: How many more KEI we recruits do you feel like
- 33:33Speaker 5: we're going to have next year off the back of
- 33:34Speaker 5: the success we saw this year?
- 33:36Speaker 2: On top of those.
- 33:38Speaker 4: Already scrambling all on the phone.
- 33:41Speaker 3: I reckon, well, they are. I can tell you they are.
- 33:45Speaker 3: I actually know they are. The phones are, like I'm saying,
- 33:48Speaker 3: I think I said it on Wednesday the phones are
- 33:50Speaker 3: going red hot.
- 33:52Speaker 2: And here's the funny thing is, I'm getting a lot
- 33:55Speaker 2: of emails.
- 33:56Speaker 3: So I've still got my West Coast feed the email
- 33:58Speaker 3: address because of my role in coaching with Fever. But
- 34:01Speaker 3: there are some Kiwi managers that must think I'm still
- 34:04Speaker 3: the general manager and so I've had no shortage of
- 34:07Speaker 3: emails come to me from KeyWe managers about players coming,
- 34:12Speaker 3: which I just foward onto that they might handle so interesting.
- 34:17Speaker 3: I reckon it's like the interesting one for me. Does
- 34:21Speaker 3: of all the Kiwi's that came out. I wonder where
- 34:24Speaker 3: the Whitney Sooners maintains a contract. But I wouldn't be
- 34:30Speaker 3: surprised to see another two.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Or three join the league.
- 34:34Speaker 4: I reckon there's going to be.
- 34:35Speaker 2: I think a lot more would like to.
- 34:37Speaker 1: There's a lot of chaos over there with what's happening
- 34:39Speaker 1: with their league next year is and the money, the
- 34:42Speaker 1: big questions as to what so so I guess they
- 34:45Speaker 1: would be looking for. Well, I need a guaranteed opportunity
- 34:48Speaker 1: that I'm going to be playing next year.
- 34:51Speaker 5: It's not UK and it's the best cop Yep.
- 34:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw an interview Maddie Gordon did Madi Gordon.
- 34:58Speaker 3: Mattie Gordon did yesterday, No this morning. I was watching
- 35:02Speaker 3: it as I was scrolling through my socials and the
- 35:05Speaker 3: guy was sort of asking about, you know, what was
- 35:07Speaker 3: it like coming back from SSN into the Ferns camp.
- 35:10Speaker 2: She said, Oh, it's really exciting and then he.
- 35:12Speaker 3: Said, what what was it like playing over in Australia.
- 35:16Speaker 3: And I'm always fascinated when you know, the players have
- 35:19Speaker 3: their first year of the particularly the key Wei's because
- 35:21Speaker 3: their league's formidable, right like, and it's sad the demise
- 35:25Speaker 3: in terms of financially of what's happening. And Maddie Gordon
- 35:30Speaker 3: said it's like she was like, it's insane, Like she said,
- 35:33Speaker 3: it's like playing international test matches every week. Well, she said,
- 35:39Speaker 3: it's just such a high standard. So like it's great
- 35:42Speaker 3: to hear it. And I know there's always this question
- 35:44Speaker 3: about how many imports. But I love the fact that
- 35:49Speaker 3: someone like her comes into a league and says something
- 35:53Speaker 3: like that about the league, because that's the kind of
- 35:55Speaker 3: league that I want to be a part of.
- 35:58Speaker 1: You make Commonwealth Games and the Constellation Cup and the
- 36:03Speaker 1: World Cup next year and I mean they've already I
- 36:06Speaker 1: think done some smart stuff with restructuring the World Cup
- 36:08Speaker 1: that you play for the Cup, but if you're in
- 36:10Speaker 1: the bottom half of the comp, you're playing for the
- 36:12Speaker 1: plate as well. So it's not like your comp isn't over.
- 36:15Speaker 1: It's not like the soccer World Cup where it's like
- 36:18Speaker 1: you're going to see it later. Thanks for coming that
- 36:20Speaker 1: there is actually something else to play for.
- 36:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's good. I think that'll be exciting
- 36:25Speaker 3: next year. So but yeah, like it'll be interesting CAF.
- 36:28Speaker 3: I think, you know, it could be more, could be more,
- 36:31Speaker 3: but there's not that many spaces, you know, And that's
- 36:34Speaker 3: to say, you know, the lot of teams. Like I
- 36:37Speaker 3: think one of the key things in recruitment is stability, right,
- 36:41Speaker 3: so you can't just go on like And the other
- 36:43Speaker 3: thing that people have to remember as this year presented
- 36:47Speaker 3: is that we'll have an earlier start to the season
- 36:50Speaker 3: most likely again, which means limited preparation. Preparation time becomes
- 36:57Speaker 3: less again, and there's an international season in January most
- 37:03Speaker 3: likely where a lot of the players, your elite players
- 37:06Speaker 3: get consumed, so they're going to come off the back
- 37:08Speaker 3: of this Commonwealth games, some of them them go into
- 37:11Speaker 3: a Constellation Cup. They then have to get and you'll
- 37:14Speaker 3: leave in and then they go back into a international
- 37:17Speaker 3: series and then they come to club some four weeks
- 37:21Speaker 3: six weeks out before the start of the season. So
- 37:23Speaker 3: when you're recruiting, you need to take all of that
- 37:26Speaker 3: information into consideration because time is time is important, right,
- 37:31Speaker 3: time is important. Doesn't matter how good you are. It's
- 37:35Speaker 3: a team, right, and you've got to be able to
- 37:36Speaker 3: blend into the team.
- 37:37Speaker 2: And what it is that we've seen the injuries this year.
- 37:41Speaker 5: You don't want to see that happen again, missing out
- 37:43Speaker 5: on these bends.
- 37:46Speaker 1: But it's interesting that you raise that. So there may
- 37:48Speaker 1: actually be a disadvantage in having a team that is
- 37:52Speaker 1: too full of international players because as a super and
- 37:56Speaker 1: Nepro team, because of all of you talked about there
- 37:58Speaker 1: about being able to get them to get there, is
- 38:00Speaker 1: that get them to gel as a team?
- 38:02Speaker 3: Well, that used to look the Vixen's a great example
- 38:05Speaker 3: and that when you're saying international players dimonds players like
- 38:07Speaker 3: they have a high contingent and used to particularly when
- 38:11Speaker 3: Lizzie Watson was there. So you know, often someone would
- 38:13Speaker 3: go into a pre season with four players.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't really want to.
- 38:18Speaker 5: Come try though, isn't it like they're all out at
- 38:19Speaker 5: the same time, they're all back at the same time,
- 38:21Speaker 5: instead of South Africa is in now, in England's in now.
- 38:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's one of the hard things.
- 38:27Speaker 3: And that's where I've been saying for ages, like we
- 38:29Speaker 3: need a Yeah, we need a window.
- 38:31Speaker 2: We need a window.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Is there an argument too that too much stability is
- 38:36Speaker 1: actually potentially probably? You know, it's like the Vixens were
- 38:39Speaker 1: looked unbeatable at the beginning of this season, but then
- 38:42Speaker 1: was there a kind of staleness whereas you saw something
- 38:44Speaker 1: like the Thunderbirds where it's like a couple of couple
- 38:46Speaker 1: of really good tweaks to the team and then suddenly,
- 38:50Speaker 1: you know, once they found their rhythm, then they became unbeatable.
- 38:54Speaker 2: I think Vixen's.
- 38:57Speaker 3: Thunderbirds are then Nemesis, right, and I don't I that
- 39:03Speaker 3: Round six game, you go back and watch it, you know,
- 39:06Speaker 3: Thunderbird there was reasons behind we like, you know, which
- 39:09Speaker 3: we know more of now, but there was a lot
- 39:12Speaker 3: going on in that game for the Thunderbirds, and so
- 39:16Speaker 3: no excuses Vixen's. You know, there's a lot that goes
- 39:18Speaker 3: on in teams all the time, and so Vixen's took
- 39:21Speaker 3: their opportunity. But I believe that the list Vixens have,
- 39:25Speaker 3: if it remains the same and the Thunderbirds remain the same,
- 39:29Speaker 3: the results will remain the same.
- 39:31Speaker 2: That's my thoughts.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they need it. They need to be
- 39:38Speaker 2: honest with you.
- 39:39Speaker 3: I actually think the Vixens need a tall posting shooter
- 39:43Speaker 3: off the bench. I think Garvin and Kierra need to
- 39:46Speaker 3: continue to do what they do, but they when they
- 39:48Speaker 3: change things up, that they need something different in that attack.
- 39:54Speaker 4: End true.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Now, I can't let you leave this netball segment, Gordy
- 40:01Speaker 1: without asking you gold, silver, bronze.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Yeah, no gold and then Australia, England, Jamaica for me?
- 40:11Speaker 2: Uh oh, ship and.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Silver and bronze.
- 40:15Speaker 2: No, I'm going to say New Zealand. I actually think
- 40:17Speaker 2: New Zealand are going to be up there. I believe.
- 40:22Speaker 2: I think, do you know, do you know? Do you know?
- 40:24Speaker 3: Do you know?
- 40:26Speaker 2: Hmmm?
- 40:28Speaker 1: Do we think that New Zealand and Jamaica will win
- 40:30Speaker 1: that side of the draw and we think Australia and
- 40:35Speaker 1: this and Gordy, you're not sure whether it's England or
- 40:37Speaker 1: South Africa. After day one, I'll tell you whether I
- 40:43Speaker 1: think South Africa or England, because I just need to
- 40:45Speaker 1: get my eyes on South Africa.
- 40:48Speaker 2: All right, well thank you.
- 40:49Speaker 5: Can we are know what I mean?
- 40:52Speaker 3: Yeah no, but anyhow, look listen, I think it'll be
- 40:55Speaker 3: in Australia New Zealand Grand Final.
- 40:59Speaker 4: Now that I remember New Zealand are playing.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah, And I feel like Australia shouldn't just
- 41:07Speaker 1: necessarily think they're going to win that, Like I think.
- 41:09Speaker 2: I look at the.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Talent we have seen from New Zealand this past year
- 41:14Speaker 1: and the development and the coaching that they have too.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Like just the biggest concern from New Zealand for me
- 41:22Speaker 2: is their goal attack.
- 41:24Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's the one position I'm not like Nazio
- 41:28Speaker 3: not playing. She's held that role, very senior player, experienced.
- 41:33Speaker 3: Heffernan goes in, what does that look like, Georgia salmonon Yeah,
- 41:40Speaker 3: Georgia yeah yeah, yeah, sister.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Surely we're seeing her in here next year.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Yeah Salmon who yeah, just and yeah, I don't know,
- 41:49Speaker 3: it's just I feel like they're lacking that there's an
- 41:52Speaker 3: opportunity for a goal attack to stand up. But it's
- 41:57Speaker 3: the one question mark I have that said that, I
- 41:59Speaker 3: was thinking about this the other day when I was
- 42:01Speaker 3: walking that potentially the mid court being so formidable, I
- 42:07Speaker 3: think for New Zealand will counteract a little bit of
- 42:11Speaker 3: the loss.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Of strength in goal attack.
- 42:16Speaker 3: So that's going to be you know, like, yeah, I
- 42:18Speaker 3: think it will be easy to shut down the goal
- 42:20Speaker 3: attack which puts a lot of weight and pressure on WIKI.
- 42:23Speaker 3: But then I also look at the mid court between
- 42:25Speaker 3: Maddy Gordon, Heffernan Burger issues on wing defense.
- 42:28Speaker 2: It depends how they run their line.
- 42:30Speaker 3: But I think that that can be pretty impressive.
- 42:35Speaker 5: Until you get to Australia because our midport is incredibly
- 42:38Speaker 5: formidable as well.
- 42:40Speaker 3: Well yes, yeah, I think you know that. That's again
- 42:43Speaker 3: that's where Australia probably shines. Well, I think Australia shines
- 42:48Speaker 3: in the depth of our bench. It's always the case.
- 42:50Speaker 2: And I think.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Marinkovich and the selection panel of always do a very
- 42:54Speaker 3: good job when they're selecting because they're always it's easy
- 42:58Speaker 3: to select a seven but what they're select thing is
- 43:00Speaker 3: plan BCD and E and how to counteract.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Which is what all the teams try to do.
- 43:05Speaker 3: But I always look and like I have for many
- 43:07Speaker 3: years and gone, you know, they can bring Steph Wood
- 43:10Speaker 3: historically off the bench. Well, christ who wouldn't want Steph
- 43:13Speaker 3: Wood off the bench right or whatever that might look like. So,
- 43:16Speaker 3: you know, Conean, I think I'm excited to see what
- 43:19Speaker 3: Conan does this tournament. I think, you know, the development
- 43:24Speaker 3: of her goal attack game, but getting back into that
- 43:26Speaker 3: goal shooter role and that real crisp movement that's different
- 43:29Speaker 3: to what Garvin offers.
- 43:30Speaker 2: I think lights up Cira Austin as well.
- 43:33Speaker 3: So that's that's a complete change that a Jamaican defense
- 43:38Speaker 3: will have to contend with. So everyone's like, oh, you know,
- 43:40Speaker 3: how were we going to beat Jamaica. Well, we probably
- 43:42Speaker 3: don't beat Jamaica with Garbon and Austin, but we don't
- 43:45Speaker 3: have to worry about that.
- 43:46Speaker 5: Yeah, I reckon we beat them in the attack and anyway,
- 43:49Speaker 5: we beat them in the defense end because they've got
- 43:51Speaker 5: a lot of.
- 43:51Speaker 3: Yeah correct, yeah, yeah correct, Yeah. So yeah, it's international network.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Don't you love it? Oh it's excited, Yeah, exit.
- 44:00Speaker 1: That's fantastic. And yes, before anyone decides to point this out,
- 44:05Speaker 1: we do know it's Steph frettell now, but Steph Woods
- 44:08Speaker 1: games I believe so.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Do you know what though?
- 44:14Speaker 3: And I've even in commentary. I've known, I knew Steph.
- 44:17Speaker 3: I had her as when I was head coach at
- 44:19Speaker 3: the AIS and this little Steph Wood came in and
- 44:22Speaker 3: I could just I saw straight before me, a genius.
- 44:26Speaker 2: I've loved the genius ways.
- 44:28Speaker 3: Oh she's a genius. She was a genius. She just
- 44:30Speaker 3: didn't she just didn't look like your standard netball player.
- 44:33Speaker 3: And she speaks, she's spoken about.
- 44:34Speaker 2: This, you know.
- 44:35Speaker 3: And we gave her the award that year, which was
- 44:37Speaker 3: the Gwyneth Benzis Award for the player most likely to
- 44:41Speaker 3: go on and play for Australia, and she was. I
- 44:44Speaker 3: awarded her that that year and she was one of
- 44:47Speaker 3: the only players the following year not to get a
- 44:49Speaker 3: contract with an ss N team.
- 44:52Speaker 4: There you go, and look what happened.
- 44:54Speaker 1: Someone didn't want to Godion to be correct is interesting.
- 44:58Speaker 3: And I coaches bringing me and I was I remember
- 45:01Speaker 3: chatting with Plumb and I've had a couple of coaches
- 45:03Speaker 3: ringing me and I'm like, no brainer, yeah, no brainer,
- 45:10Speaker 3: great jo yeah great, yeah.
- 45:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:12Speaker 3: They're one in a million, those ones. And it's it's
- 45:15Speaker 3: it's in the brain. It's the brain. It's just the brain.
- 45:19Speaker 3: They just see the game unbelievably anyhow, That's why I
- 45:22Speaker 3: always just gravitate to Wood. I can't believes little Steph
- 45:25Speaker 3: got married, has had a baby and he's all grown
- 45:27Speaker 3: up had.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Her baby too. Congratulations, yeah, congratulations, Yeah, no pressure, But
- 45:33Speaker 1: come back on court. Uh, you know we're going to
- 45:37Speaker 1: take a little break, Molly job. You should take as
- 45:39Speaker 1: long a break as you need and enjoy it and
- 45:41Speaker 1: come back. We're ready when you are, but we'll take
- 45:44Speaker 1: a little break and then come back. Okay. Now that
- 45:58Speaker 1: I've just gone against everything I stand for and put
- 46:00Speaker 1: pressure on women to get back to work after having
- 46:03Speaker 1: a baby at a time that suits me rather than
- 46:05Speaker 1: what suits them, I will apologize. I would say my penance,
- 46:07Speaker 1: but I will suggest to you, Catherine, that your next
- 46:10Speaker 1: holiday you do not choose to go to South China.
- 46:16Speaker 4: Oh my god, can you believe?
- 46:18Speaker 2: Did you see?
- 46:19Speaker 4: It's like my worst nightmare?
- 46:23Speaker 5: Nine hundred so fakes escaping.
- 46:27Speaker 1: So there were floods after Typhoon Maysak and in Hendo
- 46:32Speaker 1: and severe flooding that overwhelmed a facility and catastrophic flooding
- 46:39Speaker 1: destroyed a snake breeding farm in southern China, sending nearly
- 46:43Speaker 1: nine hundred snakes into surrounding neighborhoods and flood watchers like
- 46:48Speaker 1: and you just there these these video images of the
- 46:52Speaker 1: snakes just being carried along in.
- 46:54Speaker 4: The water with the ness monsters.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 47:00Speaker 1: It looks menacing, like when there's when flooding happens in
- 47:05Speaker 1: central Queensland and things and people have to climb onto
- 47:08Speaker 1: their roofs and wait to be rescued. That the snakes
- 47:11Speaker 1: like to be on ground too, so the snakes will
- 47:14Speaker 1: come towards their home. It's like, what, it's nighttime, my
- 47:20Speaker 1: house is flooded. I'm on the roof waiting to be rescued,
- 47:23Speaker 1: and now the snakes are coming in. It's like the
- 47:25Speaker 1: worst worst horror movie you could ever imagine.
- 47:29Speaker 2: I think there is a movie.
- 47:30Speaker 3: There's I've seen a stupid movie where that happens, where
- 47:33Speaker 3: the water comes and the snakes are all coming up.
- 47:35Speaker 2: There's someone on the roof. I have seen this beating
- 47:37Speaker 2: them away.
- 47:39Speaker 5: I would firstly, I would not go to the toilet
- 47:42Speaker 5: because they'd be coming through the bowl. It would be
- 47:43Speaker 5: a whole thing. You'd be checking under every thing before
- 47:47Speaker 5: you did anything. But if you're also seen in Florida
- 47:49Speaker 5: whenever there's floods or whatever. They quite often find crocs
- 47:53Speaker 5: in random.
- 47:54Speaker 2: The crocs that have got out.
- 47:56Speaker 4: With the floods.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Brigators alligators.
- 47:59Speaker 1: Alligators, Yeah, theylligators. What I did see something and this
- 48:05Speaker 1: was about I don't know whether I've mentioned this, but
- 48:07Speaker 1: this is a bit about January or February, and they
- 48:09Speaker 1: were having a cold snap in Florida, which I think
- 48:11Speaker 1: is a bit like a cold snap in Brisbane, like
- 48:13Speaker 1: it's it's not really cold. But they have these iguanas
- 48:16Speaker 1: and they are an invasive species. They're not native to
- 48:20Speaker 1: the area. But the iguanas will freeze and just fall
- 48:24Speaker 1: off the trees onto the ground, and so then people
- 48:28Speaker 1: will use that as a time to go through scoop
- 48:30Speaker 1: all of these things up and then take them away
- 48:32Speaker 1: to have them usinas or whatever they do with them.
- 48:36Speaker 1: It's like cane toads. We don't have to feel sorry
- 48:38Speaker 1: for them. But these things just literally freeze and then
- 48:40Speaker 1: fall off the tree. And so there's all these videos
- 48:43Speaker 1: of these guys with these flatbed trucks with hundreds of
- 48:46Speaker 1: these frozen iguanas, and they're not dead, they're just in
- 48:49Speaker 1: sort of suspended animation because they've been cryo ciovat.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Or no what it's called.
- 48:56Speaker 1: So these are not holiday destinations for us. Don't go
- 49:00Speaker 1: to Florida in winter and have iguanas fall off the
- 49:03Speaker 1: tree and knock you on the head. Southern China in
- 49:06Speaker 1: a flood that seems like a bloody nightmare. But Barley
- 49:11Speaker 1: and Queensland look in golden.
- 49:14Speaker 2: Yeah, perfect. That sun beds waiting for me on else
- 49:18Speaker 2: and I'm where am i? Friday?
- 49:19Speaker 3: It's Friday, you're back now, Friday men.
- 49:26Speaker 1: We are extremely grateful that you have taken time to
- 49:30Speaker 1: join us this week. Liz is doing all Australia type
- 49:32Speaker 1: busy stuff, so Gordy valiantly stepped in and what a
- 49:37Speaker 1: great chat it has been. Once again, Susan Gordian, thanks
- 49:41Speaker 1: for joining us. Everybody, get ready, We're going to have
- 49:44Speaker 1: some sleepless nights. We've got a lot of Commonwealth games
- 49:46Speaker 1: to watch. We've got little a lot of the dulcet
- 49:49Speaker 1: sounds of Catherine Cox and Susan Gordion in our ears
- 49:52Speaker 1: to look forward to in the middle of the night.
- 49:54Speaker 1: So get some rest. I'm Caroline Swindel.
- 49:57Speaker 2: I'm Cad I'm Sue Gordian. Thanks have a great week.
- 50:07Speaker 2: You want to learn some Indonesian. Yes, what do you go?
- 50:10Speaker 2: Upper bar? No? Not not upper kabar, upper kabar.
- 50:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and then you say bugles is that?
- 50:22Speaker 1: How are you?
- 50:23Speaker 2: How are you? And then bugs good?
- 50:25Speaker 3: BUSI Well, it's not a rude word, but it sounds rude.
- 50:34Speaker 2: Singlar piece, singlar piece? What's expensive? Too expensive? Singular? Yeah,
- 50:40Speaker 2: but when you say you say it like you're taking
- 50:43Speaker 2: the singular piece, single piece to expense.
- 50:48Speaker 1: There you go, no dribble teaching us another language. Thank you, Tim,
- 50:52Speaker 1: Cassie sigrdion.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Yes, singular fits, it's not a patalion. Oh they single
- 51:00Speaker 2: o bit?
- 51:01Speaker 4: What's bye?
- 51:02Speaker 2: What's goodbye? Goodbye?
- 51:05Speaker 4: Oh God?
- 51:06Speaker 2: What's goodbye?
- 51:08Speaker 4: Later?
- 51:08Speaker 2: I have rud of mine. Probably don't say yes, ohio,
- 51:14Speaker 2: God you are Snara
