- 0:00Hey there, it's Jeff. Hope you are doing well. We wanted to
- 0:03let you know that this podcast episode was recorded on Wednesday, September twenty seven,
- 0:07twenty twenty three. By the time you hear this, somethings may have
- 0:10changed with some of the subject matter that you're hearing, but we hope you
- 0:13still enjoy the show. All right, everybody, you're listening to the Philadelphia
- 0:41Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the
- 0:45world. Thanks so much for joining us over ten years strong. Here did
- 0:49I just say that? I don't even know if I said it. I've
- 0:51been doing this intro for years. I actually forgot if I said over ten
- 0:56years strong. Anyway, I'm Jeff Warren and I'm going by Eric Leonard Man.
- 1:00How you doing, Eric? I think you've said it at the top
- 1:03of every show this year, so okay, let me sist. Yeah,
- 1:07sometimes you say something so much so often. Right now, I'm doing that
- 1:11intro basically four times a week because now we have the Eagles postgame shows.
- 1:17You just say it. There are times when I just don't even realize what
- 1:22I'm saying what I'm doing the intro anymore, And as we all know.
- 1:25I certainly don't know how to do the outro. After all these years,
- 1:27I don't know how to do the outro. No, you haven't. All
- 1:32for ten years strong, you have not been able to do the outro really
- 1:34well. But it is getting close to a radio cliche. You're like,
- 1:41first time long time guys like the tenth You're gonna come up with something next
- 1:45year because it's it's getting a little we love cliches on the show, and
- 1:48the intro is becoming a cliche, you think, so I gotta have to
- 1:51change it up. Huh. I was actually thinking of doing like a whole
- 1:55production thing for an intro, of actually having like the intro. But I'm
- 1:59like, I don't want to. There's a lot of hackey podcasts out there
- 2:01to do that. Yeah, you know what I mean. I just figure
- 2:06as saying something, Well, maybe we should try something different to actually make
- 2:09this thing popular. Maybe we should go that route. I don't know,
- 2:12fart in the microphone boo. Let's hope for the show, folks, Let's
- 2:17do it all right, we got sports here by the way, all right,
- 2:23idea kill one weeks ago just doing a cliches show. Yes, we
- 2:27got I think that should not just be a throwaway thought. We should just
- 2:30we should just actually do it. I think it's an excellent idea. Let's
- 2:32do it. Let's do it like maybe around the holidays or something like that.
- 2:36That'd be a good idea. Yeah, it just lan you bring something
- 2:39cliches, which just thirty minutes of let's just throw see what we can do
- 2:44a show just wrapped around cliches. Oh, I know we're gonna hear some
- 2:47cliches in this particular podcast episode for sure, because first and foremost on the
- 2:53agenda, we've got a report card that we're gonna give. We're gonna give
- 2:55a report card here for and grade each team as we're heading into the fall
- 3:00here, Philly Sixers, Flyers, Eagles. I'm just gonna mention something when
- 3:06we start that segment about the Philadelphia Union, since we have been getting into
- 3:08the Philadelphia Union on this show when lenn is on. So I'm just gonna
- 3:13mention something real quick. Eric, you don't have to mention the union at
- 3:15all. You don't have to. You can replace the Flyers of the Union.
- 3:19Okay, So all right, and then from there we're gonna get into
- 3:23a discussion about this Philadelphia Phillies team as they clinched the top wildcard spot in
- 3:29the National League and they are heading to the postseason. It is a red
- 3:32October. And from there we are going to get into some Sixers talk as
- 3:37well. We know that Dame Lillard is going to be heading to the Bucks.
- 3:39How that kind of affects things with regard to James Harden And also a
- 3:44look at the Sixers roster in terms of their bench. Do they actually have
- 3:47a deep bench going into this NBA season. We're gonna talk about that,
- 3:53and then we got a bunch of NFL and Eagles talk on the way as
- 3:55well, So stick around, hope you enjoy the show. Let's start off,
- 4:00Eric with our report card for each of these Philly sports teams as we
- 4:04head into the fall. We're gonna grade each team here, and like I
- 4:09initially said, I want to just really quick talk about the Philadelphia Union and
- 4:15the fact that I think I'm thinking did they actually did they win tonight?
- 4:20Hold on, I gotta see if they won tonight, because I think they
- 4:25did because they are now third in the Eastern Conference. So I know you
- 4:30do not follow the Philadelphia Union, but folks, they are fourteen eight and
- 4:34eight. I think it was a draw tonight. Actually it was a draw.
- 4:38So anyway, they played Dallas fourteen eight and eight. On the season,
- 4:42I am going to give the Philadelphia Union based on the fact of where
- 4:46they were last season. I'm going to give them an A minus third in
- 4:48the Eastern. Love what we're seeing from this team throughout the season. So
- 4:51that being said, Eric, I'm not gonna make you do any grades for
- 4:55the Union. How many teams are in the East. How many teams are
- 4:59in the East. Yeah, I think there's I think there's fifteen. I
- 5:02think, yeah, fifteen. Well, then they get an A minus because
- 5:06they're third. Okay, there you go, there you go. Yeah.
- 5:10Mathematically, oh there, there you go. Meg dolling out the grades based
- 5:14on math. I like it. I like it. All right, let's
- 5:16head into this report card with regard to the Philadelphia Phillies here Eric again,
- 5:20like I mentioned, we're going to talk about him a little bit later as
- 5:24well, but clinching the top wild card spot in the NL head into the
- 5:27postseason, I think where this Philadelphia Phillies team is right now, I'm really
- 5:31concerned about what we're going to see from the bullpen, and of course some
- 5:34of the starting pitching. The starting pitching is not how it was heading into
- 5:39last year's postseason. I'm a little concerned about it. But still where this
- 5:43team was earlier in this season leading up to the All Star Break. I
- 5:47just I mean, they were getting hot in June. They were certainly getting
- 5:51hot in June. But I'm going to give this team overall here in the
- 5:55fall and a minus. What do you give them? I mean, you
- 6:00have to write and I think we're going to talk about each team a little
- 6:03bit right like and just kind of where we see them, like within the
- 6:09city in terms of popularity. And I want to go a but they don't.
- 6:14You know, they didn't win the division, which they were they were
- 6:15going to win division this year, but to clinch that top wild card spot
- 6:20like they did, now they can kind of just kind of not coach,
- 6:24but get get prepped for the wild card. Weird. I had to go
- 6:27back and look like, how the hell is the first round still work?
- 6:30Again? The three game right now? If it ended, they play the
- 6:32Diamondbacks. But just they get an a minus? And man, I know
- 6:41everyone this is an Eagles town. I mean, and there're three no right
- 6:43now. Everyone loves them. But I got I this is the most likable
- 6:46team in the city right now. I just everybody and this everybody on the
- 6:50team gives a great interview every time they win. There's the there's there's uh
- 7:00what he called ice water. That's like they all seem to really enjoy one
- 7:03another, and they all seemed like really into this team and really into the
- 7:08city. Like I mean, we talked about it many times this year where
- 7:11they're putting up billboards saying Trey Turner, you can do a bud like,
- 7:15which is was an unheard of like in the city of philadelph They gave him
- 7:18a standing ovation. He loved it, and then he gave a billboard back
- 7:21to the fans saying thank you. They legitimately like thank you and is invested
- 7:28here in the city. Yeah, I'm just saying, top to bottom,
- 7:30probably the most likable team because of just the personalities and every like tonight they
- 7:35won and they were showing they came back to meet the Pirates eight to seven
- 7:41and they were stowing some clips from the celebration last night and dudes just no
- 7:45overalls getting hammered. Well, I was gonna say, Garrett Stubbs. I
- 7:47mean, you're back when your backup catcher has such a personality and is able
- 7:53to entertain us fans the way that Garrett Stubbs is simply by wearing overalls.
- 7:58And last night he refused to put on the red October shirt that everybody else
- 8:03was wearing because he had the powder blue overalls. Man, it was fantastic.
- 8:09They each have their own personality that meshes so well with what the city
- 8:13is. Man, I think he hit the nail right on the head.
- 8:15And the manager is extraordinarily likable. He's a hard ass. You can tell
- 8:18it in his face and in his tone, but he gives a good,
- 8:20really good interviews. He's very honest, and he's his speech last night was
- 8:24just like fuck yeah, guys, do this again. Like I love that
- 8:28mentality. I love that positive vibe. But he's also he's also got a
- 8:31hard ass, like I said, And man, it's just it's a great
- 8:33team. Dombrowski was like the ideal GM for the squad because they're a veteran
- 8:39team. They needed pieces to win now. But they've also kind of stayed
- 8:43a little young, not as young as like the their you know, their
- 8:46rivals, the Braves and other teams like that. But man, they could
- 8:50have gone the route of the Mets, you know, and signed the wrong
- 8:52players off for a veteran squad, and he didn't. He made the smart
- 8:58Pretty much every trade he's made, every signing he's done, is pretty damn
- 9:01good. You got here. I mean, Taywan Walker is fifteen and five
- 9:05this year, what all of a number three pitcher and like, and we're
- 9:09going back to the postseason and like, what a They're in a great spot
- 9:11again, Like if they win, who do they play? Like? They
- 9:15either the Braves or the Dodges. I mean, Braves are scary? Did
- 9:18this Dodge is really scary that much? Not really? No, No,
- 9:20they've got some issues going on there. The Braves, Yeah, they do
- 9:24actually scare me. Yeah you know, I mean they scared me last year
- 9:26too. But again, as we head into the postseason, you know,
- 9:30anything can happen. Certain teams get hot, certain teams get cold. It
- 9:33is possible for this team to get back to the series. Again. I
- 9:37don't want to put the car before the horse, but still oh cliche.
- 9:39Oh no, so I don't want to do that right now, but it's
- 9:46possible in the postseason. For magical things to happen. We saw it last
- 9:50year. It could totally happen again, and and it wouldn't surprise me.
- 9:56I mean, why teams keep pitching to Carl Schwarberg. Why would you put
- 10:01anything in his zone because he could knock out of the park. It makes
- 10:03no sense. He backs one ninety eight right five home runs, But for
- 10:07some reason it works on this team. How the hell is he a leadoff?
- 10:11I don't know how that works, but they've been doing it all season
- 10:13long. Nick Castianos was is so cool this year. Kind of unlikable times
- 10:18last year awesome this year having his son is kind of his like mini me.
- 10:22That's been really cool to watch again. Just a really fun team.
- 10:24And I you know, I think before the show we were talking, you
- 10:28wanted to give kudos to the owner and kind of how he spent money,
- 10:31but spent money in a in a wise way. I was, yeah,
- 10:33I'm actually gonna wait for that for our discussion about them after when we get
- 10:37into our next segment. I'm gonna I'm gonna wait on that. I was
- 10:41gonna say that, yes the president, Dave, I'm sorry, John Middleton,
- 10:46I want to I definitely want to give him some kudos. I'm gonna
- 10:48wait on that for a little bit, but we'll definitely get there for sure
- 10:50quick. Yeah. Can I just draw correlation? So absolutely? Pre two
- 10:54thousand and eight, Phillies late nineties up to like the two thousand were range
- 11:01not the most likable team. I mean pre Jim tell me, I would
- 11:03say two thousand and three super unlikable, but we had the best announcers,
- 11:09the most likable announcers and Harry and Whitey right yep, it's completely flipped.
- 11:13Now we have the most likable team in the city. And I hate so
- 11:16much Tack and Ruben A. Marrow really, Oh, I can't stand much.
- 11:24Oh Ruben is that I could live without him? I don't Kroc and
- 11:28t Mac they've actually grown on me. They have grown on me. Yeah,
- 11:31Kruk's not bad, and even with Michael Jack on Sundays with him,
- 11:35the two of the three of them aren't bad. But has there ever been
- 11:39a guy who has failed upward more than Ruben Tomorrow Junior in baseball? It's
- 11:43unbelievable. He screws up at every job that keeps getting promoted. I should
- 11:50write a book. It's amazing what he is seriously an amazing baseball story.
- 11:54A general manager wins a World Series with a team in the Philadelphia Phillies,
- 12:00a couple of years later gets kicked out. He's gonna be a first base
- 12:03coach up up in Boston, right, I think, I think, oh,
- 12:07is it the Mets, And you're right, I think I have the
- 12:11Red Sox. Yet that didn't work out. So now he's in the broadcast
- 12:15booth for the Phillies in a cush job. He's never gonna lose, yes,
- 12:20Like, there's so many good guys for that seat and he's not one
- 12:22of them. But yet he'll be there for the next twenty years. Exactly,
- 12:26yep, exactly. All right, let's move on to the Philadelphia seventy
- 12:28six ers here, Eric, and we're certainly gonna get in some more Sixers
- 12:33talk on the show. But in terms of what this team is right now,
- 12:35I'm just I'm just giving him a c. It's just like it's I
- 12:39feel just average right now. Again, this is as we're heading into the
- 12:41fall here, how we're feeling about the team. We know that they have
- 12:45not taken a dribble during the course of a regular season. The twenty twenty
- 12:48three two twenty four season is right around the corner here, and I just
- 12:54feel and I'm just feeling bad kind of about this team and I'm gonna give
- 12:58him a sea right now at this point. And a lot of that is
- 13:01because of one James Harden and the the the stench that is hanging over that
- 13:07particular saga and situation. It does. It stinks and that's why they get
- 13:11a sea for me. What do you give him? I mean, I
- 13:13know we're talking about the six years later in the in the show, so
- 13:16I won't go to two inch detail, but I understand the stench and the
- 13:20potential lingering stench of what could happen with him beat if he gets unhappy.
- 13:26And sorry there nobody, but I mean, the hardened thing is a complete
- 13:31black cloud over this whole season so far, and status figure out. The
- 13:37crazy thing is that the Dame trade today might have opened up an avenue where
- 13:41they could bring in a better player to replace Harden and put get him off
- 13:46to the Clippers, where he probably wants to be. Anyway, I think
- 13:50LA's perfect for him. He's a complete phony and a ship bag, so
- 13:54that's where he should go. And it now opens up a potential three way
- 13:58deal where Drew Holiday can come in and we'll talk about that later, but
- 14:01that I think. But as as far as a grade right now is they're
- 14:03currently created. I mean, I just looked at the roster before the show.
- 14:09Decent bench, but holy hell, this could be a catastrophe by the
- 14:13end of December. I go see right now? See as well? Okay,
- 14:16let's move to the Philadelphia Flyers. I know you don't follow them very
- 14:22much at all. I'll give one take when I go, yeah, okay,
- 14:28So I'm actually going to give the Philadelphia Flyers at this particular point a
- 14:33B minus. And I'm saying that because Danny Brier has made some tremendous moves
- 14:37during his early tenure as this new general manager. It is a new era
- 14:43of Flyers Hockey, and it is a new era of thinking about what the
- 14:46future can actually be like, not hoping, but what it can actually be
- 14:52like. With with the draft this past season, with the moves that Danny
- 14:58Brier made to get additional draft picks, it was calculated. It's something we
- 15:03haven't seen in many, many years. Yes, we held out hope that
- 15:07Ron Hextall was going to be able to turn this organization around. We certainly
- 15:09held out hope for a very short period of time that Chuck Fletcher was going
- 15:13to be able to turn things around. But I think Danny Brier actually does
- 15:16have a vision implementing that now, setting the foundation of the future. And
- 15:22when you can set that foundation early in a general manager's tenure, That's why
- 15:26I'm giving this team actually a B minus. The plug the hockey place certainly
- 15:31hasn't started, and we know what it's going to be. We know that
- 15:33it's going to stink this year, but we know that two to three years
- 15:37from now this team could really be clicking on all cylinders. So I'm giving
- 15:41them a B minus. So what are your thoughts here, Eric, So
- 15:45you're telling me two to three years ago they were two to three years away
- 15:48from something. That's the Flyers, that's the Flyer's handle. Basically, Hey,
- 15:52guys were two years away from being two years away. Yeah, I
- 15:56was Brier's offseason moved to sowning that jerk off son of his. Oh god,
- 16:00yeah, that was terrible. Yea. Yeah, here's my only take.
- 16:06I don't pay attention to the Flyers at all. I'm sorry broadste Hockey,
- 16:10all our friends over there and anyone who likes the Flyers. I have
- 16:12a lot of Flyers fans of my life, and even they're just like,
- 16:15yeah, you're you're fine, Slyne. You don't have to. But it
- 16:19was funny. So money. And I'm watching the Eagles and they're they're given
- 16:23like a C plus effort, like I mean, not effort, but they're
- 16:26playing a C plus kind of game be minus. It wasn't great. The
- 16:30lines just destroyed the both Bucks lines offensive defensively, and at the same time
- 16:36they won by fourteen points. I'm watching the Phillies or I'm you know,
- 16:38I'm getting ready for the looking at the standings that Phillies win tomorrow, you
- 16:41know they're gonna be in the playoffs. And I look at my phone and
- 16:45the Flyers lost six nothing to the Devils and the first preseason gas and I'm
- 16:51like, wow, what a what a contrast from what I'm looking at right
- 16:56now. But it is the preseason, ever know, and maybe this is
- 17:02the regime, this is there what third regime attempt to turn this around?
- 17:06And but because of the preseason, you have to have some kind of hope.
- 17:07I guess C plus. Okay, all right, very good, very
- 17:11good. I liked. I like your analysis. There as somebody who really
- 17:14doesn't get into the team that much in terms of following them religiously. Like
- 17:19like I said, Michelle, no Lenn and Lenn and I do. Yeah,
- 17:25I think it's very fair, very fair. Your wife and I have
- 17:29the same Flyers knowledge, I think. So, I think so absolutely all
- 17:33right, And finally let's move on to the Philadelphia Eagles. I mean,
- 17:37I'm gonna give the Eagles thus far, they're three and oz one of three
- 17:41teams to not have lost a game as of us recording this, and they're
- 17:47heading into this Week four matchup against the Washington Commanders, as Eric likes to
- 17:52call them, the Comes. So so I'm thinking this team is going to
- 17:57be four and oh and look has been perfect this past week. Some issues
- 18:02in the red zone, certain play calling you kind of question, and they
- 18:07really weren't able to get a lot done in the red zone. But again,
- 18:10they're three and ozer they won twenty five to eleven on the road.
- 18:14Eagles Nation travels so well. Fifty nine percent of the stadium Raymond James Stadium
- 18:19were Eagles fans. It was like another home game for them down there.
- 18:23And yes, this is not a report card for the fan base, But
- 18:26with this team, I'm giving them an A minus at this point because they
- 18:30are one of the two top teams in the NFC they are, and but
- 18:34one of the three top teams I believe in professional football at this point.
- 18:40So I think an A minus is deserved. What do you give them?
- 18:42Definitely an A minus and they're leaning on their strengths as as the quarterback gets
- 18:49kind of used to the new offensive scheme and gets used to his players again,
- 18:53because again that was like is what third game? Didn't have any preseason
- 18:57and they have the luxury of having the best offensive line of football and one
- 19:02of the most ferocious, frightening defensive lines in football. Which that was the
- 19:06entire Buccaneers game. I watched it, and it was it was unbelievable how
- 19:10much bigger each line was, our line compared to their line. I'm both
- 19:15sides of the ball, Like Jordan my Allot at one point was standing next
- 19:18to Goldston, their defensive tackle, and I'm like, he's two inches taller
- 19:22and like sixty more pounds than him, and that guy's supposed to go through
- 19:29my life. It's just unbelievable and I was telling you before them. You
- 19:33know, I'm absolutely in love with Jordan Davis and Jailing Card to the pairing
- 19:37of those two, it's it's my favorite defensive pairings since I mean, my
- 19:41god, Wes Hopkins and Andre Waters come to mind, Jerome Brown, Reggie
- 19:45White, like you know, those are my squads, the late eighties,
- 19:48early nineties teams, and I've always really leaned toward towards the defensive side of
- 19:52the ball. Those guys are so frightening and so fucking good and just annihilating
- 19:57collapse the entire in tier alliance on some plays. And I can't believe what
- 20:02an athletic phenon Carter is at tackle. It just how do you fall to
- 20:06nine? Every pastime's got to be kicking them. It's it's unbelievable what they've
- 20:10Eagles ab to pull off. And because of that, like I just this
- 20:15is one of my favorite teams already so far, and mainly because of the
- 20:19defensive line part a minus. For sure, They're just gonna get better.
- 20:25Offense is a little shaky, which but we're still winning by two touchdowns,
- 20:29you know, in these games, And I don't know what else is there
- 20:33to say. The only we talked about for the show. I'll bring it
- 20:36up. My only fear is like just the spotlight that's on this team.
- 20:42Yea, Eagles never really had that before. I mean, they've had it
- 20:47at times, but they're usually they've never really been the sexy team. They
- 20:52don't play that way. But they're starting to become the sexy team because you
- 20:56know, Jalen Hurts is on commercials and stuff and the Kelsey thing. You
- 21:00know, oh my god, who the hell ever imagine a center would become
- 21:03like a primetime star in the NFL. But it's happening because his brother as
- 21:08well. And you know, I will say, like I'm I'm just fearful
- 21:14that one eventually, we're gonna be like Okay, enough already, like we're
- 21:17kind of I love Jason Kelsey like anybody does. But man, like this
- 21:22past weekend with with that news that came out, I'm just thinking to myself,
- 21:26this is going to be brutal over the course of this season. Because
- 21:30I do I do listen to their New Heights podcast. It's such a good
- 21:33podcast. It's so entertaining, and they certainly addressed you know, the stuff
- 21:37that went on in Kansas City this past Weekend in a very calculated, I
- 21:41think way, and I think it needed to be done from business standpoint for
- 21:45you know, both individuals. But still it I can see myself, just
- 21:49like you Eric seriously around December being like, oh my god, I love
- 21:52the Kelsey or I love Jason Kelsey, and it's like, oh my god,
- 21:56can we please stop? My gosh. But I but I, like
- 22:00I said, you know, I'm like, you give me in a reality
- 22:02show. I don't like reality shows. And it's slowly becoming that the addition
- 22:07of Taylor Swift and this whole thing is just like completely insane, like that
- 22:11that Chiefs, like what do you call it? Luxury Suite was already nuts
- 22:15with Mahomes wife and his brother and Taylor Swift in the Mega It's just it,
- 22:19it just becomes it's it's it's now like beyond reality TV. But I
- 22:26you know, I think I told you if Doctor Jay was on a reality
- 22:29show my favorite human being of all time. Yeah, by season three,
- 22:32I probably like, all right, I mean a little sick of Doctor James.
- 22:36It's too much. I don't want to be with this person that much.
- 22:37So and but I wisten that podcast is really entertaining. I don't know
- 22:42if you guys heard the Jason Kelsey told the story of Vince Young when he
- 22:48was his first year on the Eagles. He was yeah, and he he
- 22:52was he was a rookie and Vince Young was there and he saw Vince Young
- 22:55much years and years later and was like, I'm gonna go say hi,
- 22:59No way he remembers me, and yes, He's just like, yeah,
- 23:02I don't probably remember Vince Young's of course I remember you, man, Brent
- 23:04Selick, you were a great tight end. Yeah, And I was like,
- 23:10how do you think Jason Kelsey's a tight end like that? Like that
- 23:15kind of stuff is great. It's the other Taylor Swift and the reality shows.
- 23:18I get tired. I love when they get into the athleticism stuff on
- 23:22the on the podcast, like I usually listen to them when I'm when I'm
- 23:25mowing the lawn. And I was absolutely stunned. And I've actually never as
- 23:30as close as I followed football, I've actually never heard stories about how much
- 23:33weight these guys lose during the course of training camp, like a day at
- 23:37camp, like a day of camp, how much weight they lose and it's
- 23:41water weight and the the the I don't want to call it a curriculum,
- 23:48but just the mathematical aspects of how they need to keep their body hydrated throughout
- 23:52the course of a day, throughout the course of a week, and how
- 23:56that relates to their performance. And I know it sounds may be obvious,
- 24:00the way they went into it was incredible. And the amount of weight that
- 24:04they both guys have actually lost during the course of one day, one day
- 24:11not anywhere near ridiculous. To lose ten pounds in a practice, ten pounds
- 24:18in a practice, that's how hard these guys are actually practicing. And the
- 24:22most weight both of them actually lost in one practice in their entire careers was
- 24:26fourteen pounds in one day, which is why they're eating like hogs when they're
- 24:33not at the Novocare compl or maybe when they are at the Novocare Complex or
- 24:37whatever or wherever Travis Kelsey eats at. But it was amazing, Like the
- 24:41stories they tell about inside football are really really good, and that's that's the
- 24:48aspect of that show and the insight those guys bring because they're super likable and
- 24:52funny, yeah, entertaining, but they can also bring that like the stuff
- 24:57that you and I would never know about. We love sports, Yeah,
- 25:00exactly is really cool. Like I said, once you add the element of
- 25:03reality TV, that's where I start to be like, I'll listen to the
- 25:07podcast, but that's about it. Yeah, everything else. I love how
- 25:10we're talking about the Kelsey's Now. People are probably like, oh my gosh,
- 25:14you assholes are talking about them. There you go, let us know
- 25:18what you're thinking about our report cards? Did we get it right? Philadelphia
- 25:22Sports Table at gmail dot com. We'd love to read your email here on
- 25:25the show and respond to it. Now, Eric, let's get into some
- 25:27more detailed discussion about this Philadelphia Phillies team again clinching that top spot in the
- 25:33wild card and they're they're gonna be in this NL race heading to the postseason
- 25:40now. And like we said a few minutes ago, when we were talking
- 25:42about the Phillies, and I really wanted to bring up John Middleton because how
- 25:48many years were we saying, you know this guy, this freaking cheap skat,
- 25:51he doesn't want to spend any money. Oh my gosh, he's a
- 25:55detriment to this team. And then a few years ago he said a phrase
- 26:00to decide to spend some stupid money and we were all like, all right,
- 26:03what is he talking about? Here? And now here in twenty twenty
- 26:07three, reflecting on that, I have to say we need to give credit
- 26:11to John Middleton for actually deciding to pull the plug in. Yes, folks,
- 26:15I do know it's easy. It's easy to spend money. You've got
- 26:17millions upon millions upon millions of dollars. Yes, I guess it's easy to
- 26:19spend it. However, making the decision to do so really help put this
- 26:23Phillies team where they're at today, where they were at last year as well,
- 26:29that magic that was the World Series team and can they get back to
- 26:33it this year. I don't think we would be talking this way if John
- 26:37Middleton didn't decide, as you know, one of the main owners of this
- 26:41team, that you know what, Yeah, we're going to be spending some
- 26:44big money. We're gonna be going after some free agents. Bryce Harper's contract
- 26:48worth every freaking penny, every single penny, the free agents, whether it's
- 26:55Kyle Schwarbert, Nick Castiano's coming in the development within the farm system as well,
- 27:00and the investments that the Phillies organization has made in the farm system with
- 27:03new development coaches. We're seeing, we're seeing guys like Bryson Stott coming up.
- 27:08Alec Bohm, the type of season he had. I know, my
- 27:11friend Ben Silver, who we had on a few weeks ago talking about the
- 27:15Phillies, wasn't necessarily the biggest Alec Bohm fan, but I certainly still am
- 27:19because I think he's developed pretty damn well defensively, He's born and bred in
- 27:26the system here, and I think the investments that John Middleton has made Eric
- 27:30over the course of these past few years, we're seeing, we're seeing how
- 27:33the money was spent coming to fruition. And it's not just spending money.
- 27:37Spending money. We've seen how teams have done. The Dodgers have done that
- 27:41for how many years? And look, I mean, yes, they usually
- 27:45get to the postseason, but where has it really gotten them and what has
- 27:49it done for their fan base as well? So I gotta give some props
- 27:53to John Middleton as we're talking about the Phillies heading into this postseason here,
- 27:57he deserves a lot of props. And that terms stupid money can go two
- 28:00ways and go like I'm going to spend a ship ton of money. Yeah,
- 28:03I can be stupid or you spend it stupidly, and you and you
- 28:08pay the wrong players and you make the wrong free agent signings right and I
- 28:14maybe people were a little like confused by what he said. Looking back,
- 28:18it makes it makes sense, like he's like, I'm going to spend a
- 28:21shit ton of money, but I need I need to get the right people
- 28:23in here and make get the right GM, which he did for this particular
- 28:26team. I'm the biggest Dombrowski fan. You go through his history, not
- 28:30the best moves, but for teams that are veteran teams like this, he's
- 28:34he's always been pretty solid at building on an aging team that is still it
- 28:41can kind of win now mode, but they've also kind of remained young.
- 28:45I'm not sure what he doesn't like about Alec Bohm. Ben's you say,
- 28:48Ben Silver, I'm yeah, I'm a fan. Like he can play first
- 28:52and third, he's versatile, yes, versatile, and he's one of the
- 28:56few young guys you have right now on the team. I'm a huge fan
- 29:00that they have arms, like they have depth. You know, you don't
- 29:03necessarily need that in the playoffs. You really got to hope Nola Wheeler and
- 29:07Walker and maybe Lorenzen is kind of tailed off at the end of the season
- 29:12here, but yeah, a little bit. But they but they have depth,
- 29:18they have a good bullpen, and they have they have all the elements
- 29:21to make a run. And I like, like I said earlier, the
- 29:26Braves are going to be extremely formidable. But that's they beat them last year,
- 29:30right, And if you just get hot, if Nola and Wheeler get
- 29:33going again, it's completely possible. And thank thank god we're in this situation
- 29:38because just think back a few years ago, this team, you know,
- 29:41before Milton decided to spend stupid money, you know it, they were not
- 29:48likable and they sucked and they were they were just as if they felt just
- 29:53as like lost in direction list to me as the Flyers are now. Yeah,
- 29:59Like there was a point where was like, am I going to see
- 30:02this team in the playoffs before I'm like fifty years old? Like holy hell,
- 30:04like what is this team doing? Like it? And it was like
- 30:07we talked about Ruben Tomorrow earlier and he he made some awful moves that killed
- 30:14off that oh eight run that probably should have won another title, and they
- 30:18were in no man's land for I mean, how long were the Phillies in
- 30:19No Man's Land. Eight years raced. Yeah, it was awful and just
- 30:25to have this team now we're actually going you know what, if we get
- 30:27in, we got a shot to go to the World Series again. Like
- 30:30and and that's legit talk. That's not two idiots who don't know, Like
- 30:33you're just pie. You know, I'm the sky. But with the Pine,
- 30:37this guy, I'm cliched out like you don't. I don't know my
- 30:40cliches. No, you got him, buddy, I know you do.
- 30:45But you know, And I can't say enough about the owner doing what he
- 30:48did and bringing in the right people. So absolutely, Philadelphia Sports Table at

- 31:45Table there. We are going to take a quick break here. We'll be
- 31:48back in just a bit. All right, we are back and Eric,
- 31:52let's take a look at what this Philadelphia seventy six ers team may look like.
- 31:56It's especially from the bench stand point, because I was actually looking at
- 32:00the roster recently and I was thinking to myself, I'm like, hold on,
- 32:05did they have a pretty deep bench here? I'm thinking to myself,
- 32:07I'm like, all right, the Anthony Melton, who's who started and closed
- 32:13a lot of games for the Sixers last season, is probably gonna have that
- 32:16role of a sixth man when when the main guys on the team are healthy.
- 32:22Patrick Beverly, he's coming to Philly here with his trademark, you know,
- 32:27defensive prowess as well, Paul Reid, as we know, is going
- 32:30to be coming in for Joel Embiid every now and again. Mo Bomba,
- 32:37you know, I mean he could also give Philly more you know, grunt
- 32:39and size while having that modern skill set as well. So I don't know,
- 32:45I'm thinking this is a this is kind of a deep bench here and
- 32:50it hopefully it is going to serve them well this season. Yeah, probably
- 32:54won't. I mean, I'll be honest, I'm not. I'm not.
- 32:59I'm not with you the positive one in it really tried, dude, I
- 33:02don't know if you saw it in the outline. I tried. I actually
- 33:07was like, you know what, let's try to get some positivity going with
- 33:09the Sixers team. Listen. I went through the roster and I'm just like
- 33:15Mo Bamba, such a disappointment for what supposed to be Patrick Beverley's thirty five
- 33:22not not my favorite guy in the league. I mean, PJ Tucker is
- 33:28another year always thirty eight years old. I know, I almost forgot about
- 33:31I forgot to mention p J Tucker. Yes, I mean who does he
- 33:35cover if they if they play the Bucks in the playoffs? Now, Like,
- 33:37who the hell does PJ Tucker. I don't know. It's just not
- 33:43Dwayne Deadman. They a bunch of centers, Montrese hair all, Danny Green's
- 33:46back. Yeah, you know, great h Daniel House who was nothing last
- 33:52year. D'Anthony Melton. I like him a lot, not not a great
- 33:55player. Kelly Ubrey actually not a bad son. He kind of like him.
- 33:59I was gonna say we got to mention him. He would he was
- 34:00just signed like yesterday. I think. Yeah. And this is a team
- 34:05that this roster right now is constructed. Like with Nick Nurses, the coach
- 34:09probably went a first round. No way they get past a second round.
- 34:13This is this is a second round defeat big time. Once again. The
- 34:17key is you gotta get you gotta get moved off. James Harden. There's
- 34:22just no way we can talk about the Dame thing today. That happened today
- 34:25real quick. Such a downer because this is a win now team. Like
- 34:31the process thing is just way overdone, and they should have made some sort
- 34:37of move to try and get Dame here because you got maybe two years left
- 34:39with Embid. You know, I got a two year window here, and
- 34:44why not go after a guy who's got probably two amazing years left in him
- 34:47has never played with a player like Embiid, Like the two of them would
- 34:52probably played really well together. Pick and roll defensively, could be struggle,
- 34:57but he's you wouldn't need him, like you just getting shootouts with the other
- 35:00teams. And if you could somehow get him, if you could somehow got
- 35:05him and got rid of Harden and kept MAXI somehow like something, because I
- 35:08don't know, if you saw what the Blazers got, it wasn't impressive.
- 35:12I mean it, Deandreton was probably the nicest piece and Drew Holiday and then
- 35:16but here's the one, here's the one silver lining that Drew Holliday is now
- 35:20completely on the open market. And when the players aren't going to keep him,
- 35:25he was just throw in yeah, they're gonna flip him from for more
- 35:30assets, which is smart because why they already drafted Scoot Henderson and you have
- 35:34some other guards there in Portland. This now like opens up very nicely at
- 35:39a good window for Drew Holliday to return to Philadelphia. And if you guy,
- 35:44you can move hard into the Clippers some kind of three way deal where
- 35:46where the Blazers get picks future six Ers picks which you're probably really valid,
- 35:52valuable, like three four years when we when we start to if this doesn't
- 35:54work out and uh and beads and with the knicks and we're going like twenty
- 36:00five and whatever like this, those picks could be actually huge. So a
- 36:05combo of Drew Holiday, Maxi, and Embed with maybe one other piece here,
- 36:10like another wing or something that's a little more interesting, like you actually
- 36:15you can actually let Maxie just score and Drew Holliday be the defensive guard,
- 36:19where with Harden and Harden and Maxie you're just you're You're dead at defense.
- 36:22You have no no shot at the guard spot. Undefensively. Again, it's
- 36:27all about James Harden. We know that. That's that's what it all comes
- 36:30down to. And I told you before we hit the record button that you
- 36:35know, I was just like I was just kind of disenchanted with Dame going
- 36:38to the box, thinking, man, there are that much better now.
- 36:40That team is going to be so good this year, and thinking to myself,
- 36:46man, if we could have had him, what could have been?
- 36:50And then we're talking about Drew Holiday possibly and I'm like, yeah, but
- 36:52does that even get us out of the second round? And you had a
- 36:55good point. You made a really good point by saying, you know what,
- 36:59I'd rather there have the opportunity to do so than to be where we're
- 37:02currently at right now. Because where we're currently at right now with the you
- 37:07know, big fat jerk off. You know, you know, we're not
- 37:10gonna we're not gonna get out of the first round probably, you know.
- 37:14So like it's it's I don't know, it's it goes back to the it
- 37:17goes back to my C grade, r C grade that we gave the Sixers.
- 37:22At this point, it's just this middling type of nothing going on right
- 37:27now. And you know what, if Drew Holiday comes here, then fine,
- 37:30it's gonna be it would be interesting to see, for sure. And
- 37:31that's at least when I want to see with this Sixer season, at least
- 37:35something a little interesting. Yeah, And just I mean from a likability standpoint,
- 37:39he's so much more likable. And I mean, he hit one of
- 37:43his best seasons last year. He made the All Defensive team once again,
- 37:45fifth time in his career. Nineteen points, five rebounds, eight assists.
- 37:50Like, he's still really damn good. And I know he's thirty three,
- 37:52but so is James Harden And which which which career trajectory would you want?
- 37:59Right through? It takes care of himself and he plays good defense and can
- 38:01still shoot, and god knows what the hell James Harden's going to be in
- 38:06two seasons. So if you can somehow, the only downside is when that
- 38:09move happened. I think no one thought true Holiday was going to be available,
- 38:14but now he definitely is. And there's probably more than I mean,
- 38:16I'm sure the heat are involved. I'm sure any any contending team would want
- 38:21him on their roster. So if you can somehow, you're gonna have to
- 38:24give up something to get him. And if you can somehow move Harden onto
- 38:29another like if he wants to be on the Clippers, fine, whatever the
- 38:31hell you can to do to make that happen, make it happen. And
- 38:36if you can get Holiday out of the deal somehow, then freaking do it
- 38:38and trade away future picks, because this is it. You got like two
- 38:40years left. Absolutely, if it's three team deal, if it's a four
- 38:44team deal, you gotta do it. You just have to do it.
- 38:46I don't think i've ever like I've seen it on video games, but I
- 38:52don't think i've ever seen a four team deal in actual life, they look
- 38:55fun like get it done, Daryl, you think, I know, when
- 38:58you're on the trade machine, it's funny, you just throw all these teams
- 39:00in, But right it never Actually the three team deals are kind of unique,
- 39:05and I was kind of surprised to hear this one. Were you surprised,
- 39:08like like where some of the players went, Like yeah, like like
- 39:13the Blazers didn't didn't get what I thought they should have gotten in exactly what
- 39:16was the other team? Oh, the Suns got Like I thought they got
- 39:21kind of shit in that deal. I know they're trying to shed salary to
- 39:24save money because all they have those three players there now, But I was
- 39:28I after the Bucks. The Bucks destroyed that trade, like they put themselves
- 39:32right back in contender mode, And I thought the other two teams actually got
- 39:36cut got a little worse. Ye Like the Suns don't have a great bench,
- 39:39so I don't know. I That's why it made me sad that that's
- 39:43that was the trade, because I'm like, couldn't the Sixers have done something
- 39:45in that trade to get Dame Yea? The Sons get like Grayson Allen Nasir,
- 39:51little Johnson. I think yeah, like, and I know they have
- 39:57to get cheap bench players because they have you know who, they have,
- 40:00the three quote superstars. But I didn't like and I don't and I don't
- 40:05know. I just I looked at it, and I'm like, I guess
- 40:06the Blazers were just like, this is the best we're going to get.
- 40:09I would have waited, maybe waited a little bit, but I don't know.
- 40:14It was a weird trade. You don't know what was going on behind
- 40:15the scenes. We just don't know, do you know what I mean?
- 40:17And you're right, that might have been just the best they might have been
- 40:20in their offices saying, holy shit, guys, you know this is this
- 40:22is the best we're gonna get right here. We gotta pull the plug up.
- 40:25There's there's already rumors on on X or Twitter or whatever that can call
- 40:30it X again. I'm gonna kill you. I know that the Bucks were
- 40:34tampering a little bit already, yeah, in the off season, but I
- 40:37you know who the hell knows? The NBA tampers all the time. They're
- 40:42the worst league at it by far. They decide who they're going to punish
- 40:45just because they don't like a certain team. Well, that that in free
- 40:49agency, Like at twelve oh one, so and so signed with the Songs.
- 40:52You're like, how can you sign a contract ten seconds in defeat if
- 40:55you weren't talking early, It's like it's possible, all right, Well,
- 41:02it's it's a C grade for this team right now. God, it's so
- 41:07freaking frustrating that nothing's happened right now. It's not gonna happen to October.
- 41:10Probably, yeah. And what sucks is like, even if they get Drew
- 41:15Holiday and move on from Harden, you're still at like a B. Yeah.
- 41:21Are you better than the Bucks? Are you better than the Celtics?
- 41:22Probably not? Like you can see some of these teams that have gotten Actually
- 41:27some of these teams have gotten to the finals the past couple of seasons.
- 41:30You're like, you know what, they were playing some B grade level ball
- 41:35and you thought the rosters were B grade level as well, and look where
- 41:39it got them, do you know what I mean? Well, and for
- 41:43you to make the finals and B for three straight rounds has to be like
- 41:50all world forty points a game, twenty rebounds, yeah, with the roster,
- 41:53Wade is yeah, and can he possibly do that? Probably not?
- 41:58Like, yeah, that's like eighteen to twenty games solid where he has to
- 42:02perform and not not a not pull a Donovan McNabb Warren Burner game because he's
- 42:08he's got those in him. He gets that look on his face and he's
- 42:12kind of drooping down the court. You're like, oh shit, yeah,
- 42:14he's tired, he's not into this, and it's it's mean, the only
- 42:17one the only thing it's worse is when James Harden just stop shooting. Yeah,
- 42:22like in this Celtics series, Like that's that is that is that is
- 42:25McNab warren Burner times ten because you know you're in trouble, like he's not
- 42:30going to give you anything. So I love the McNab warren Burner thing.
- 42:34So it's so and and the best part is like you didn't even have to
- 42:38like look at his face because the chin strap was always hanging. Yes,
- 42:43he walked onto the field with the chin strap hanging. You're like, oh,
- 42:45warm burner game coming exactly. We're gonna see five warm burners. Yeah
- 42:51in this corner, six warm burners, two interceptions, fumble, you know
- 42:54a bad game is coming. Yeah. All right, well, let's on
- 43:00to our final topic here before I let you go Eric, just to get
- 43:06into some quick NFL talk here, because it's been a weird NFL season I
- 43:08think so far. Look, the Cowboys lose to the Cardinals this past week,
- 43:14a Cardinals team that was supposed to be quote tanking. They actually look
- 43:17like they're fighting. They actually look like they give a shit about their season,
- 43:22about their team. You know, as much as I cannot stand how
- 43:28Jonathan Gannon left this Philadelphia Eagles team and organization, like I said, I'm
- 43:31not saying I said it on Twitter, I'm not saying anything bad about him
- 43:36for the rest of September because they beat the or the Cowboys. You have
- 43:39the Dolphins that are absolutely dominating and their quarterbacks the MVP frontrunner at this point,
- 43:45the Jaguars the up and coming team, and the AFC they end up
- 43:50losing to the freaking Texans. The Giants are an absolute offensive disaster at this
- 43:55point. Dude, It's a really weird NFL season. It's it's it's been
- 44:00pretty bizarre, and it leads me to believe something that I've said a number
- 44:04of times over the years on this podcast is that I don't know, perhaps
- 44:07the talent is leveling out a little bit I'm gonna talk to our friend of
- 44:10the show, Chip Kagi from the All About the Birds podcast. He's gonna
- 44:15be joining us in a bit. I'm gonna ask him a little bit about
- 44:16that as well. But I think that I think the talent across the league
- 44:22may actually be kind of leveling itself out. Eric, It's just it's a
- 44:24really weird season. Maybe it has to deal with the preseason where a lot
- 44:29of these starters are not playing, but then again, you take a look
- 44:31at Tua and what he's doing in Miami. It's just I think it's been
- 44:35a weird season. I think it's you know, when you manage people,
- 44:40there's there's always this right even teaching, you know, there's always this curve,
- 44:45like the Bell curve. Yeah, where you're twenty percent at the top,
- 44:49twenty at the bottom, and then you got your your middle like sixty
- 44:51percent. And I feel like the NFL is like ten eighty and ten right
- 44:55now, or maybe even twenty at the bottom. Like you've got some really
- 44:59good team at the top, but it's not in many of them. Like
- 45:01I would not put many teams as as being contenders outside of like the obvious
- 45:07ones, you know, I mean our prediction of Bengals Eagles right now for
- 45:12the Super Bowls? Holy hell? Oh but that's not good. I mean,
- 45:16but then you know, but I mean, how many teams do you
- 45:20say are our contenders right now? Four? Maybe four? Maybe four?
- 45:22How it's looking right now, and it's it's etaly. We're heading into week
- 45:25four here, it's early, but yeah, like maybe four, maybe five
- 45:30perhaps, But I mean the Eagles are one of those, one of those
- 45:32four or five definitely. But look, do I think that my I'll say
- 45:37this right now, Do I think Miami is gonna be able to sustain this
- 45:39type of success that they have. No. I think they're gonna lose some
- 45:43games. They're gonna end up getting a little bit of the injury bug and
- 45:45how that affects various aspects of the offense or defense wherever that injury does end
- 45:50up coming from. Because it's gonna happen with every team. I mean,
- 45:52we saw it with the Eagles in Week two. They lost a bunch of
- 45:54their guys in the secondary. It affected them. They still ended up winning
- 45:59the game because they're a damn good team. But it's it's it seems like
- 46:04a lot of teams still have a lot of rust on them that they're trying
- 46:06to get off. Well, I'll start here. The bottom of the trash
- 46:12heat is horrendous, like the Bears the world badly, the Bears, the
- 46:19Broncos losing by fifty, The Giants are awful. Like, there's some really
- 46:23bad teams, dude, And I think the Panthers are there right there with
- 46:28them, like, and they're already looking like do we take the wrong quarterback?
- 46:30I can't believe how small that guy looks out there. I know the
- 46:32storyline was like, oh he's tiny, maybe we don't take him first.
- 46:36Overall, he looks scared and small. The one game I watched to him
- 46:40like wow, did they maybe pick? And then he's watched c J.
- 46:43Stroud for the Texans. You're like, maybe they made the right pick because
- 46:46I don't know. I'm just I'm thinking, like the worst teams and like
- 46:50where are they going to go from there? But the middle is really fat.
- 46:53There's a lot of teams in they're just like I don't I don't see
- 46:55it. The Chargers, maybe the Lions, we Jared Goff really, you
- 47:00know, the Saints are a weird team. The Raiders are weird. There's
- 47:05just a lot of weird teams. That's what I mean. It's a weird
- 47:07season. Yeah. And and I as far as the Dolphins go, I'll
- 47:12say this like, I think they're definitely in the mix because I like I
- 47:15like Michael Michael Lombardi's podcast. I've always liked his analysis and football yeah or
- 47:22former GM, so obviously he's won some rings. But he made a really
- 47:24good point though on his recent podcast that the Dolphins are doing something incredible and
- 47:30how fast not just how fast the team is, but how fast the plays
- 47:34are and how fast Tua gets the ball out because like they're they're coach who's
- 47:38really damn smart. I'll give him credit. He's really pop, really pompous,
- 47:43cocky dude. But I I like the way he calls his offenses like
- 47:46he sees what he has. He doesn't have a great offensive line, and
- 47:49two was very injury prone. We saw the concussions last year. And he
- 47:52decided he's gonna have the ball out of his hand within two seconds. I'm
- 47:57not gonna allow the offensive line to get him hit. And I'm not gonna
- 47:59allow to make a dumb decision holding the ball for five or six seconds.
- 48:02Yeah, Either getting concussed or throwing an interception. He's like, I had
- 48:07the fastest team in the league. I'm going to call the plays even faster.
- 48:09And I was like, that sounds so simple, But how hard is
- 48:14that to do? Because you have to have these tight you have to have
- 48:16the type of athletes and play calling in place. And yeah, I heard
- 48:20that in Lembar. I was like, Wow, that's really smart. Man.
- 48:22I never It's like, I don't I've ever seen an offense like this
- 48:27before. Yeah, I don't think we have. Actually, I mean I
- 48:29go back to I think it was during our Eagles season preview podcast that we
- 48:32did Eric where we were talking about, you know, maybe who we would
- 48:37like to rather have in terms of the wide receiver corps, who maybe the
- 48:39better wide receiver corps would it be. I remember we talked about specifically the
- 48:44Dolphins and then the Eagles and I and I said, you know, the
- 48:46Eagles because you had a J Brown who was just a big, large guy
- 48:51out there who's going to be able to go up to the catch point bring
- 48:54that ball down, and we've seen him do it a number of times throughout
- 48:58his career. And then you have the speed with DeVante Smith and I said,
- 49:01because down down in Miami, they've jail and Waddle, they have Tyreek
- 49:07Hill. It's all speed. And I said, I'd rather have a combination
- 49:10of both, and I'm not. I'm still there. I'd rather have a
- 49:15combination of both. But you are seeing Mike McDaniels put together a system and
- 49:20the call, the play calling that you were talking about, Eric, where
- 49:23it is so fast that I don't think we've seen this before, the level
- 49:29of how fast the plays are called, coming in and just getting on.
- 49:32Like, I'm gonna be really interested to see at the end of this season
- 49:37how Miami if they're able to sustain a little bit of the play calling aspect
- 49:42of this, how quickly each play actually was because they do, they have
- 49:46to the speediest wide receivers in the entire league. And yes, where he
- 49:50most dirties what in he's thirty, in its thirties or whatever, and killed
- 49:54it this past week. I don't think he's gonna be able to sustain that
- 49:58type of success, but still it is. It is fascinating to see another
- 50:01aspect of professional football evolved and the Miami Dolphins are doing it. Yeah,
- 50:08I mean, I know, I said the same thing as you, I'd
- 50:10rather have Smith than Brown, but I mean kind of have to rethink it
- 50:15a little bit. I mean maybe, I mean maybe I see him.
- 50:16Amy is incredible. It is like it is and it's three games too.
- 50:20So that's why I said, let's wait till the end of the season.
- 50:22I really want to see It's gonna be really interesting to see that data and
- 50:24those numbers. I'm still I'm still still with a j and DeVante still with
- 50:30them right now, so my and and I just I don't know, I
- 50:34just it was really cool analysis to hear. And then you think about,
- 50:37like, Okay, well you know the Dolphins play the Eagles. Can can
- 50:42they get to to a fast enough right to to before he throws it to
- 50:45Tyreek Hills? This grace receiver in the league. I just it was.
- 50:51It was. It's an extremely weird season with a lot of a lot of
- 50:54strange storylines and that that being one of the most positive ones, and like
- 51:00the whole two of thing could have gone horribly wrong where he got concussed in
- 51:04the first week and his career is over. Yeah, as opposed to and
- 51:07this is like because there's so many storylines that went down the tubes I mean
- 51:10the Titans are atrocious. No, Aaron Rodgers, Yeah, Aaron Rodgers went
- 51:15down. The Bears and the Broncos are like two of the worst teams I've
- 51:17seen in history, Like they're really bad. Could not wait to see what
- 51:22both of those teams were actually going to do this season. I was really
- 51:23looking forward to it. I'm like, all right, how are they going
- 51:25to develop here? And it's been The Falcons should be probably three enough they
- 51:32had any sort of quarterback. That guy sucks. Yeah, the Vikings and
- 51:36Panthers are both thowing three. Who the hell is gonna who would watch any
- 51:39one second of that game? Yeah, that's a brandice And I mean they
- 51:44culture two and one, but what the hell's what the hell isn't matter there?
- 51:45And I just it's just good to have a couple of positive stories.
- 51:51And one of the best positive ones is that the Patriots are really shitty and
- 51:53the Cowboys lost and that they were they were the darling of the NFL for
- 52:00two weeks and then there their cornerbacks towards ACL they get housed by the Cardinals
- 52:05and now now and no one's talking about them. I could be happier.
- 52:07I know, same here, same here. That's a great way to end
- 52:10this segment before we go into our break. Let us know what you're thinking
- 52:15about this NFL season Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com. We will read
- 52:19your email here on the show, will respond to it. We'd love to
- 52:22hear from you, folks, and Eric, Buddy, I'm gonna let you
- 52:23go. You have any last thoughts before we head out here. No,
- 52:27I've jibber jabbered along a long Oh my god, I just looked out at
- 52:30the time. I thought, I swear to god, I thought we were
- 52:34recording for like our regular time of like maybe forty minutes or something like that.
- 52:37Nope, holy cow, it's incredible. Well, and thank I did
- 52:42not complaining about it, because that used to They used to be a big
- 52:44one for you. I know, I used to think, Yeah, I
- 52:47know who cares, right exactly. Yes, all right, buddy, I'll
- 52:52let you go. Folks. Remember to follow Eric on Twitter at brick Polite.
- 52:57And we're gonna take a quick break. We will be back. Got
- 53:00Philadelphia Eagles talk coming your way. Stick around. All right, we are
- 53:05back. Let's get into some Philadelphia Eagles talk. Where this team is heading,
- 53:09what we've been seeing from them, as well as they're going to be
- 53:13facing the Washington Commanders this weekend. It's what we're throwing down on the table
- 53:17and now on the table. It is great to have back on the podcast.
- 53:23Always love talking to him and you can hear a lot of his great
- 53:27content over at All about the Birds. That great podcast. I've been on
- 53:30a number of times and it's fun. The guys are fun over there,
- 53:35and you can follow them on Twitter at Chip for the Birds. We've got
- 53:38our friend Chip Kaye. How you doing, buddy? What's going on,
- 53:42Jeff? Thanks for having me on. Nice to talk about some three and
- 53:45no Eagles over here. I love it. I love it, and I
- 53:46love the fact too. Before we get into like the topics that I sent
- 53:50you that, we want to get into the fact that fifty nine approximately I
- 53:53think from what I read about fifty nine percent of Raymond James Stadium yesterday for
- 53:57Monday Night football, we're Eagles fans. Incredible, man, Incredible. How
- 54:00this team's fan base travels, How we love the team that much, you
- 54:05know, it just amazes me. And we know that we know this team
- 54:09travels very well, that most away games turn into primarily home games. But
- 54:15I guess it was the Christmas colors of it all, the red versus the
- 54:20green where it was so drastic. I mean, you saw the Buccaneers trying
- 54:23to pull up their little sign and Eagles fans preventing them. You know,
- 54:27when the game was clearly out of hand. You saw Raymond James emptying out
- 54:30and it was being Eagles fans. You saw newscasts where they were saying,
- 54:35oh, he thought Eagles fans were annoying before you know, what did the
- 54:37Eagles do right? Everything? What did the Buccaneers do wrong? Everything?
- 54:39I mean, it was just this team has such a positivity around it.
- 54:44Now before we get in all that, did you catch because I've been struggling
- 54:47with this now for I guess twelve hours, almost twenty four hours. They
- 54:51definitely said that it's the first time that they're gone three and zero, right,
- 54:54he said this little statistic wrong at the end of the year. Oh,
- 54:58absolutely, And that's not at the end of the game. I think
- 54:59he I was trying to say it was the first time they've been three and
- 55:00oh since ninety two ninety three, But I'm like they were eight and oh
- 55:04last year. So I don't know what cool aid you drank all night at
- 55:07Raymond James, but it was the wrong cool aid exactly. And I think
- 55:09they also went three and it didn't They also go three and oh or maybe
- 55:13I'm thinking two and oh back in two thousand, two thousand and two,
- 55:15because I think over the past like thirty years, it's been three times,
- 55:19and then this year and last year were one or two of those times.
- 55:22I think. I mean, it just it goes to the narrative of they
- 55:27don't understand enough about this team because it's not one of the sexy teams in
- 55:32the NFL. Like with the one Drive when you had Kenny Gainwell running the
- 55:37ball and they kept saying Andre Swift it's gonna be over two hundred yards today,
- 55:38I'm like, that's Kenny gin Yes. I just think because they're not
- 55:44the Chiefs there, not the forty nine ers, they're not the cowboys,
- 55:45they don't do there, they don't do their business of making sure they understand
- 55:49this team. I felt. I still, for some reason, I canceled
- 55:52my athletic for subscription. I did. I'm like, you know what,
- 55:55they have no sixers writer, no flyers writer, I'm canceling it. So
- 56:00I but somehow I'm still getting access to the articles anyway. I read the
- 56:05power rankings. Eagles are not a top three. They're not a top three.
- 56:07They're they're They're four. It's like the Dolphins, then forty nine Ers,
- 56:14then the Chiefs, who are two and one, by the way,
- 56:16and then the Eagles. No, the Chiefs lost a game. The disrespect
- 56:20is incredible. The Chiefs lost the game and haven't really played anybody since.
- 56:24I guess you know what, it worked really well for us in twenty and
- 56:29eighteen. No one likes us, we don't care underdog mentality. Let's go
- 56:30for it again. There you go, there you go. Look all right,
- 56:32well, let's get into some of these topics. I wanted to really
- 56:36talk with you about here, Chip. You know, I don't know about
- 56:38you, but I'm happy. I'm happy here about how this Eagle season is
- 56:42really progressing. And I think we're seeing so many moving dynamics within the league
- 56:46itself where the talent is really kind of leveling itself out. You know,
- 56:51my my co host Eric and I we were talking before about the fact that,
- 56:53I mean the Giants are just putrid on offense. I mean, you
- 56:58have the Dolphins honestly a surprise. We thought that would be pretty good,
- 57:00but I mean a perennial MVP into a tuck of myloa. You also have
- 57:06the Jaguars losing to the Texans, and like, it's a lot of weird
- 57:09stuff is going on, a lot of surprises throughout the league just after three
- 57:14weeks, and I do wonder what we should make of the narrative that the
- 57:17Eagles team, despite being three and Ozer, isn't quite living up the certain
- 57:22a certain level and certain expectations this season thus far. It kind of bothers
- 57:28me a little bit when I see that narrative, especially amongst fans within Eagles
- 57:32Nation. I don't know what are your thoughts on that, because I think
- 57:35it's a pretty good season so far. So I think there's a lot to
- 57:37break down in this in this first topic. So the first thing is that
- 57:40the NFL has been very weird this season. Yes, I mean it just
- 57:45has been. You know, my wife and I we do are our NFL
- 57:46pick them every week and it's just been a weird season. You mentioned a
- 57:52couple of games that went the way that we weren't really sure about that other
- 57:54teams are kind of performing the way that many thought that they would, but
- 58:00the hypes around like the Bears, people were saying that Justin Fields is better
- 58:04than Jalen Hurts, and Justin Fields, unfortunately, isn't going to do well
- 58:07because you know, they invented the forward pass in the nineteen hundreds, so
- 58:12that's gonna be problematic for him. You know the fact that Josh Dobbs has
- 58:14led the Cardinals to be a competitive team when everything is saying they had no
- 58:17interest in being a competitive team this year, even with the hiring of Jonathan
- 58:22Gannon, with the Rams doing their everything that they could to put together a
- 58:25mediocre roster and again being competitive. So I don't know if it's so much
- 58:30that the talent is evening out or it's tough because I look at this Eagles
- 58:37team and again, on paper, I think the reason why the narrative is
- 58:39the way it is is because on paper, this Eagles team was supposed to
- 58:43be blowing teams out, much like the Dolphins did yesterday. They're supposed to
- 58:46be blowing out bad teams. You have got probably the best offensive and defensive
- 58:52line in football. I would argue that against anybody secondary, you know you're
- 58:59gonna be a little short linebackers should let everybody go. But offensively, we
- 59:02should in theory be scoring forty forty five points a game, and it just
- 59:06hasn't clicked yet. So then you got to kind of look into the y.
- 59:09You've got new coordinators, you've got first time coordinators. Yeah, you've
- 59:14got an offensive line that had played together for years. You know, Isaac
- 59:19sale Malu left. You know, Cam Jurgen's is kind of learning a new
- 59:22spot. Landon Dickerson has really had to step into the starting role. I
- 59:24think there's still a lot of pieces you entirely replace a running back room.
- 59:29You know, you're still trying to get Dallas Goddard to be the guy,
- 59:31and he's maybe the fifth or sixth best option on the team. Yeah,
- 59:36offensively, I mean I think that you know, you look at week one,
- 59:42and week one is what it is. It is bad football because there's
- 59:45something to be said about playing your starters during the preseason. Absolutely, we
- 59:50talked about him on this podcast. Yep, yep, Yeah, have to
- 59:52at least for a drive. It's got I mean, and then and then
- 59:55they'll hit you back with, oh, well, the joint practices. You
- 59:59cannot simulate live game action. You just can't so Week one look detrocious.
- 1:00:05I'm pretty sure all three of the Eagles games have been played in the rain.
- 1:00:09That is true. Yeah, there's a factor in that. There's been
- 1:00:12a weather factor. And again I'm not trying to make excuses, but this
- 1:00:15team is definitely not to lift up. And you look at some of the
- 1:00:16other things, and you know, I know we're gonna, you know,
- 1:00:19discuss Jalen Hurts a little bit. Next up. I think you saw it
- 1:00:23in the preseason with the backups. I think you saw quarterbacks holding onto the
- 1:00:28ball entirely too long, and I think you're seeing a continuation of that.
- 1:00:30So it's almost my concern is there's such a narrative around Jalen Hurts becoming a
- 1:00:34pocket passer that he's doing the Donovan mcnabbrow, which is he's got a pass
- 1:00:37before he's allowed to run. Yeah, it's interesting you mentioned McNabb changed his
- 1:00:43game. Yeah, it's interesting you mentioned donovanman that he really looked like McNabb
- 1:00:45yesterday. In fact, some of my buddies were actually saying that in our
- 1:00:49text thread. You know, we're sitting there watching the game text and we're
- 1:00:52like, man, he's looking like McNabb right here in that development of Hurts,
- 1:00:55and it's a really good segue into what we're really seeing from him him
- 1:01:00because his play on the field this year, I don't think it's terrible by
- 1:01:04any stretch of the imagination. And as I was saying on our postgame show
- 1:01:07yesterday, he's a quarterback that continues to make elite plays. He is making
- 1:01:12elite plays, folks. But the turnovers, yes, they are a new
- 1:01:15development here this season. And he was very calculated last season. This year
- 1:01:20it's been more of a reckless type of play from him, trying to force
- 1:01:23the ball into certain defensive situations that he's facing. How do you assess Jalen
- 1:01:29Hurts so far this season based on kind of what you were just what you
- 1:01:31were just saying. So, I think again, part of the situation is
- 1:01:37the reason why people are going well. This team isn't playing well enough yet.
- 1:01:39Why Jalen Hurts isn't playing well enough yet is due to the expectations surrounding
- 1:01:44this team going into the season. The expectation is the Eagles are a super
- 1:01:47Bowl caliber team. Jalen Hurts is an MVP caliber quarterback. You look at
- 1:01:52all the quarterbacks who are in that MVP caliber. Burrows has looked terrible.
- 1:01:58Yeah, Homes hasn't look great. Josh Allen hasn't looked great. Trevor Lawrence
- 1:02:01hasn't looked great. Tua has played out of his mind, but he's kind
- 1:02:06of played along the level of what we all expected Jalen Hurts to do.
- 1:02:08So people are looking at going, well, if Tuah, who's not a
- 1:02:12fantastic quarterback, is making all these great plays and he even have Jalen Waddle
- 1:02:15on Sunday and they put up seventy points. Yeah, tell me why Jalen
- 1:02:20Hurts in a year where he's returning his two top wide receivers, his tight
- 1:02:23end, his offensive line is struggling. And I think it goes a lot
- 1:02:28to the new relationship with the play calling. I think that Brian Johnson is
- 1:02:31still trying to figure out what exactly he wants to do as a play caller,
- 1:02:36and I think the person who is taking the biggest brunt of that is
- 1:02:38Jalen Hurts. Because Jalen Hurts wants to go out and he wants to go
- 1:02:42and make plays. I think he's being told, hey, settle through your
- 1:02:45reads a little bit try and make those throws look for the passes, which
- 1:02:50again I don't hate the idea of developing as a passer. But while you
- 1:02:54say elite plays, and that's true, he does put some absolute great throws
- 1:02:58and he makes great runs. I am more excited about Jalen Hurts the winning
- 1:03:02quarterback. Yeah yeah, I don't care if he puts up MVP numbers.
- 1:03:08I just don't. I don't care if he rushes for fifty yards because he
- 1:03:12runs the push push twenty times, right, I don't care do they win
- 1:03:15the game. And that's the same thing that he echoed last week. Since
- 1:03:19when is winning not enough? And it's that mentality. It's gonna push Jalen
- 1:03:23Hurts to that elite level. Absolutely. I think that's a great point too,
- 1:03:27because you again, the elite plays are there, you know, I
- 1:03:31mean, my god, the touchdown throws a CAUs was a freaking beautiful It
- 1:03:37was incredible. I think, folks, we need to start calming down a
- 1:03:40little bit here with regard to this team. There are three and all,
- 1:03:45for the love of all that is good and holy, folks, let's start
- 1:03:47calming it down just a little bit. Okay, So all right, let's
- 1:03:52move along here every single year, the majority of Eagles fans and the fan
- 1:03:55base to get annoyed when Howie Roseman decides to kind in trade on the trenches
- 1:04:00during early rounds of the NFL draft, Chip, and especially the first round.
- 1:04:05But you know what, we are seeing what Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter
- 1:04:09are creating in terms of the foundations of the defensive line's future here, and
- 1:04:14it's just amazing to watch. And then on the opposite side of the ball
- 1:04:17you mentioned Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, we're seeing them helping to lay the
- 1:04:23foundation of the future as well from an offensive perspective. In the trenches,
- 1:04:28we're seeing the trenches are where football games are won. And the Eagles have
- 1:04:32certainly not just figured it out, but they've honed in on it and it's
- 1:04:35their bread and butter. So when you reflect on previous drafts, Chip and
- 1:04:40how the Eagles are constructed year after year, how would you assess how this
- 1:04:45Eagle's front office here has become just a staple of team building year after year.
- 1:04:50It's amazing to see. I think if you look back just a few
- 1:04:55seasons ago, when everyone was calling for Howie Roseman's head on a spike.
- 1:04:59Myself include it same here. It was it was a team with no direction,
- 1:05:02and as it turns out, it was actually due to the fact that
- 1:05:06guys like Chip Kelly and even Doug Peterson wanted to go a different way with
- 1:05:12how teams were developed. The times that this team has been its most successful
- 1:05:15are when they build in the trenches. You saw with Andy Reid and the
- 1:05:19development of that franchise, and then they what they did is you win games
- 1:05:26in the trenches. So Nick Sirianni, who is I'm going to pick the
- 1:05:30best player available at all times, has found these players and again, Howie
- 1:05:34Roseman builds the roster. Nick Sirianni said that at his first press conference,
- 1:05:40Howie builds the roster. I make sure that the players can play. Yeah.
- 1:05:43Now, it just so happens that Georgia Bulldogs keep falling into our our
- 1:05:47lap, which I'm okay with because they're a professional program that I'm pretty sure
- 1:05:53could beat the Giants right now. The Giants are dreadful, and I just
- 1:05:56had to take a giant shot in that I had people telling me that they
- 1:05:58were going to win the division, and no, they're not. No,
- 1:06:00they're not. But that's why listen, I did a four I did a
- 1:06:05NFC East table pod and delusions were were magnificent. But again it goes back
- 1:06:14to the idea of it's not sexy. Right, everybody wants it to be
- 1:06:17an offensive game where you're putting up seventy points. Joe Burrows is a really
- 1:06:25good example of when you don't have a great offensive line. Because he doesn't,
- 1:06:30it's very difficult to get the ball to Jamar Chase and to Te Higgins
- 1:06:33and Tyler Boyd and Joe Mixon because you're fearing for your life. I think
- 1:06:40you saw that a lot with with Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield had Mike Evans
- 1:06:44last night, he had Chris Godwin last night. He had guys that you
- 1:06:45could throw the ball too. He just couldn't throw the ball, right.
- 1:06:49I think that when you look at and art, our strength is running the
- 1:06:55football. It is not sexy. It's just not. But again, does
- 1:07:00it win football games? Absolutely? Our defense, Our defense is sexy.
- 1:07:04Yeah. Absolutely. We may not have that one T. J. Watt
- 1:07:08type player, that Aaron Donald type player, that Micah Parsons type player,
- 1:07:13that it is the entire defense. But when you neutralize those guys, those
- 1:07:16defenses are beatable. So what do you have. You have a Jalen Carter.
- 1:07:19Jalen Carter is going to be come one of those players, but you
- 1:07:23also have a Fletcher Cox and a Brandon Graham, and a Josh Sweat and
- 1:07:25a Derek Barnett and and the list goes on. The front seven of this
- 1:07:30team is violent, yes, and it is beautiful. That is sexy,
- 1:07:35absolutely it is. And I think too when you're building through the trenches like
- 1:07:39the Eagles and Howie Roseman have done, it creates more versatility on both sides
- 1:07:45of the ball, and that's inevitably what you want. Like you said,
- 1:07:47the run game, it's not the sexiest thing in the world. It's not
- 1:07:50as sexy as AJ Brown going up grabbing a pass and grabbing a catch at
- 1:07:56the catch point. It's not that sexy. But it allows for versus because
- 1:08:00at the end of the day, a J. Brown is gonna get those
- 1:08:03catches. He's gonna have a good, great season like he had last year.
- 1:08:05DeVante Smith is gonna have a great season like he did last year.
- 1:08:09And they're also gonna be able to run on the ground too. That offensive
- 1:08:11line and the defensive line building in the trenches allows for versatility, and that's
- 1:08:16where the league is going. And I think the Eagles really are at the
- 1:08:19forefront of that chip and I think that you see it a lot because of
- 1:08:25Jeff's Helen. Right. Yeah, So I think a really phenomenal couple of
- 1:08:30things to point out when it comes to our offensive line is Number One,
- 1:08:31a guy like Jason Kelsey and I I, of course, you know,
- 1:08:33I couldn't wait to watch Eagles football yesterday, so I watched the Kelsey documentary
- 1:08:39for the first time. I'm like crying like a baby. I'm like,
- 1:08:41how is it only new? And I still have to have hours. But
- 1:08:44Jason Kelsey's not gonna come back if he's not in a safe space. Lane
- 1:08:46Johnson's not gonna come back if he's not in a safe space. The fact
- 1:08:48that they turned Jordan my Lotta into an All Pro tackle, it's incredible.
- 1:08:53He's incredible. The fact that Andre Dillard, a first round pick lost out
- 1:08:58to Jordan my Lotta, signed to the Titans, I believe and has looked
- 1:09:03terrible. Yeah, goes to show you that it's happening in house. Yep,
- 1:09:08it is happening. In house. Isaac Salamalu, an incredible guard has
- 1:09:13looked just okay. They can't run the ball in Pittsburgh. Yep, yep,
- 1:09:16you know you see it. Holliplui valley by tie right over in Detroit,
- 1:09:23same thing. Jeff Stoutland is the key to that team, and it
- 1:09:25does not go. It does not get brought up enough that he is the
- 1:09:30best coach position coach in football, hands down, barn I absolutely, hands
- 1:09:35down for sure. Again, folks talking to Chip Kegi from the All About
- 1:09:42the Birds podcast. They are on YouTube. I listened on Apple podcasts.
- 1:09:45Is well, great, great times over there, and let's move over to
- 1:09:49the defense, because defensively, Chip, I can still see how we're making
- 1:09:54a move, perhaps at the safety position. I think in terms and you
- 1:09:58mentioned it earlier, in terms of the best back end of the secondary.
- 1:10:01There's still a lot of not just question marks, but guys that just need
- 1:10:04to develop. Yes, read blanket Ships having quite a nice season so far,
- 1:10:09but I'm not comfortable with this depth here, especially with the injuries we
- 1:10:14saw yesterday to Sidney Brown and Evans as well. I believe he was injured
- 1:10:19two at one point in the game. Are you feeling the same way about
- 1:10:23the safety position. Do you think how he's gonna inevitably need to make a
- 1:10:25move there? So I actually feel the way about the entire secondary right now,
- 1:10:30I mean I do. I know that the safety position is obviously going
- 1:10:32to stand out. It was a weakness going into the season. Reblanket Ship
- 1:10:35has played phenomenal again in proof of another great draft pick and everything kind of
- 1:10:42going the way that it should. But when he missed a game, you
- 1:10:45also saw that the depth isn't there. So you look at the rest of
- 1:10:48this depth chart, right, Sidney Brown left or no, I'm sorry,
- 1:10:51Justin Evans left the game. The team felt that Terrell Edmonds was allegedly going
- 1:10:58to be a starter. He lost out jobs here and there. Sidney Brown,
- 1:11:00he's a good player, but you have four safeties on the roster.
- 1:11:02A Fonte Maddox at one point was a fifth safety, kind of a floater
- 1:11:05player. He's out for the years. So then you have to look at
- 1:11:08this entire team. When you move you're starting outside corner and James Bradberry to
- 1:11:13the slot because of a guy like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, and you
- 1:11:16know what they're gonna bring and you leave Josh Job as your backup. You
- 1:11:20have a shortage, the fact that you know Keiley Ringo, he hasn't done
- 1:11:25anything yet, Marriel Goodrich, Eli Rix, these guys are young, but
- 1:11:29we just haven't seen what they have. And I think that we have the
- 1:11:31Dolphins coming up in a couple of weeks. It keeps going back to that
- 1:11:33game. For me, I'm not worried about losing a game to Baker Mayfield.
- 1:11:38I'm just not I'm not worried about losing a game to Daniel Jones.
- 1:11:41I'm not worried about but Tua, who hits weapons left and right, I'm
- 1:11:46worried about. You cannot rely on Bradberry and the side. You have to
- 1:11:49have him on the outside shutting somebody down, which means you're gonna need another
- 1:11:54slot corner and somebody who can kind of play corner and safety. Yeah,
- 1:12:00it's sad we don't have CJ. Gardner Johnson. It's sad, but he's
- 1:12:03hurt too. He is hurt, Yes, exactly. Versatility. I think
- 1:12:08one thing that really is amazing about this defense is the versatility. So you
- 1:12:11look at a guy like Nolan Smith and you can put him, you know,
- 1:12:13linebacker line. You know, you look at guys like Hassan reading.
- 1:12:15Can you put him at the ed rusher, edge rusher, You can put
- 1:12:17him at the lot, You can do all these things. But again,
- 1:12:21you do need just experienced bodies because you're planning on making a Super Bowl run,
- 1:12:29yep, which means unique guys that have been there before exactly. Just
- 1:12:33you just do. It's a great, great, great little segment right there.
- 1:12:40And the final segment of talking about the Eagles here is going to be
- 1:12:45special teams chip because I got I have to say it. It's just it
- 1:12:48has bothered me now for years and years where special teams have gone with this
- 1:12:53Philadelphia Eagles team. They were once a staple. And I talk about special
- 1:12:57teams a lot on this podcast because they are just so important terms of field
- 1:13:01position. And I know it's like it's like talking about the trenches. It's
- 1:13:04not sexy, but my godfield position is so important in this day and age
- 1:13:09in the game of professional football. And dare I say that Britain Covey is
- 1:13:13turning into a viable punt returner. Dare I say that actually, because holy
- 1:13:20cow, I actually saw a productive special teams unit yesterday in terms of the
- 1:13:25punt punt unit. I mean great to see that he was averaging twenty seven
- 1:13:29yards per punt return yesterday, mainly because of that fifty two yard return that
- 1:13:31he had in that game against the Bucks. But I'm wondering, like,
- 1:13:35what are your overall feelings on how special teams have performed over the past few
- 1:13:40weeks. And oh, by the way, aside from Justin Tucker, we
- 1:13:44got the best next best field goal kicker in the NFL in Jake Elliott.
- 1:13:47He's fantastic. So I don't know, I think I think maybe we're seeing
- 1:13:50special teams developing here. What are your thoughts on him? Yeah, so
- 1:13:54special teams is always a big deal for me because you can win or lose
- 1:13:57games depending on how your special teams play. You know, we know,
- 1:14:00you know we a couple of years ago against the Bucks in the playoffs,
- 1:14:02we lost a game because we couldn't punk the ball. Yeah, it just
- 1:14:05it happens. You you need your special teams to be able to play.
- 1:14:09I was, oh man since last season banging the drum about how Aaron Syplos
- 1:14:15is not the punter of this team. He can't. He is just not.
- 1:14:19He has some of the worst punts in football. And they kept bringing
- 1:14:24it back, and they kept bringing it back, and then you know,
- 1:14:26they didn't put any punter on the roster, and then they did the active
- 1:14:28called thing. And again I'm banging on the drums. Aaron Psypos can't be
- 1:14:30the guy just because he can hold the ball for Jake Elliott. Jake Elliott,
- 1:14:33because he is as great of a kicker as he is, kind of
- 1:14:38got to dictate what he wanted. You know what, I want Sypos as
- 1:14:41my holder. That's how I do best. So you better believe last night
- 1:14:44I was watching Brandon Man holding that ball and nothing was different. Nothing was
- 1:14:48Yeah, nothing different want because Jake Elliott is the best kicker in football.
- 1:14:54Justin Tucker might be the greatest kicker in the history of football, but he
- 1:14:58misses some chip shots. Now, his percentage is great. I look at
- 1:15:01it the same way with baseball, Right, you have to rotate things,
- 1:15:03right, so there's not an ace every year. You're gonna look at the
- 1:15:05top five guys and those are the aces for the year, and they don't
- 1:15:08just get to stay there. Jake Elliott is the best kicker in football.
- 1:15:12I love it. Jake Elliott is the best kicker in football. And that's
- 1:15:15how I feel about that. The special teams is finally clicking. And that
- 1:15:18was actually a point of concern because you had so many young guys and you're
- 1:15:21worry about coverages and you're losing guys like you know, Avante Maddox, and
- 1:15:26you're losing these guys that that can cover all day. You know you're you're
- 1:15:30cutting, but they're figuring it out. You know why, because you have
- 1:15:34to figure it out in this league. And Britain Covey went from being that
- 1:15:38every week call up to going, you know what, no, here's your
- 1:15:40spot on the active roster now again if he breaks one, amazing. I
- 1:15:45just need a sure handed receiver. And I think, again, being from
- 1:15:49Philadelphia, we're sported because we had the DeShawn Jackson's, the Brian Westbrooks,
- 1:15:54the Brian Mitchell's, the Rod Smarts and he hates me of the world.
- 1:15:59I mean, I think we're spoiled in that you're Reno Mahi's. But I
- 1:16:03can't stand watching Greg Wardfield anymore. Punch. I know it was so rough.
- 1:16:08I just can't. Covey is not an integral part of this offense.
- 1:16:13So if something heaven forbid, where to happen? It doesn't wreck the season,
- 1:16:17right, right, exactly, exactly, great way to look at it.
- 1:16:20So let's really quick talk about the NFC East here and the NFC in
- 1:16:25general too, Chip before I let you go here, because I gotta tell
- 1:16:29you the Cowboys and their fan base. Man, they had to take a
- 1:16:31seat, take a seat this past week after getting their socks knocked off by
- 1:16:36the Arizona Cardinals. And look, okay, we know this the Cowboys,
- 1:16:41they're a pretty good team. They are a pretty good team. But I
- 1:16:43think the Eagles are showing the league who's truly going to dominate, not only
- 1:16:46in the division but in the conference along with the San Francisco forty nine ers
- 1:16:50here. So I just want to get your quick thoughts and assessments on the
- 1:16:55NFC. How you see things shaken out early here? So opt the remomy.
- 1:17:00Where are we in the this is their year cycle? I know that
- 1:17:04it was. This is their year for the Cowboys, Yes, and then
- 1:17:06it's we beat some really good teams and then they lose a really bad game,
- 1:17:12and then they lose at some point and they missed the playoffs. So
- 1:17:15they barely make the playoffs and then they lose in the playoffs, right,
- 1:17:19So I just it's the yearly cycle. It's you know, you can almost
- 1:17:23watch it on VHS at this point along with their Super Bowl highlights. So
- 1:17:29I think that there's again the Cowboys. They always have their excuse. So
- 1:17:34before it was the fact that Kellen Moore was a terrible offensive coordinator, and
- 1:17:38he probably was. You know, it was maybe the fact they were trying
- 1:17:41to force feed Ezekiel Elliott the ball and Tony Poller was a better running back.
- 1:17:45And it was the fact that Dalton Schultz they did not replace Dalton Schultz,
- 1:17:48You're right, the fact that they went out and traded for a first
- 1:17:53round quarterback to back up their quarterback who's already disgruntled. Yeah, that's saying
- 1:17:58a little something. And I when you look at this Cowboys team, they
- 1:18:03always have an excuse. So this year the excuse will be, well,
- 1:18:08Trayvon Diggs isn't playing. Ah there, Yeah, who's who's gonna stop the
- 1:18:13Eagles receivers? You know, we went out and signed Stefan Gilmour so that
- 1:18:15there would be two guys to cover these two Eagles receivers. Okay, but
- 1:18:21he got Hurt and Michael Parsons is still a dominant player, but he's beating
- 1:18:26up on bad teams right now. Yeah, as as you should as you
- 1:18:29should be, but you're beating up on bad teams. And I think that
- 1:18:31when you look at the state of the overall the NFC, you know,
- 1:18:34it's a it's a two it's a two team race. It's the Eagles and
- 1:18:38the forty nine ers. Yes, I think it's been that way. I
- 1:18:42think that brock Purty is still very young and he's benefiting from the fact of
- 1:18:45he's got some guys that can do amazing things. You know, Christian McCaffrey
- 1:18:48when healthy is probably the most offensive weapon in he's the best offensive weapon of
- 1:18:55football. And then you pair with the Deebo Samuel. I mean, you've
- 1:18:57got some guys out there. You've got George Kittle, You've got some guys
- 1:18:59since just go. You've got a pretty good defense. But again, it's
- 1:19:03gonna tie down to can brought pretty to do the job. Jalen Hurt has
- 1:19:05already proven that he can do the job, and he's got all those weapons.
- 1:19:09So it's a two team race. You know, when you look at
- 1:19:11some of the other pretenders. I don't think that the Green Bay Packers are
- 1:19:15good enough. I think that Jordan Love is kind of forced himself to win
- 1:19:20a couple of games, but I don't think very much of him. I
- 1:19:24think that the Lions are a pretty good team, but Detroit is gonna Detroit.
- 1:19:28I think that they horribly miscalculated what DeAndre Swift is. Yeah, gibs
- 1:19:34wow. I think that the Bikings are owing three because Kirk Cousins is your
- 1:19:38quarterback and he's great at patting stats, but that's about it. And they
- 1:19:41have nobody on defense. The Commanders, the Giants, these are all teams
- 1:19:45that are not good football teams. The Saints, they're not a good football
- 1:19:49team. And they're getting Kamara back and that's great and all, but they're
- 1:19:54still not a good football team. And you know, now they're gonna be
- 1:19:56without Derek Carr weeks a week. And Jamis Winston's your guy again. Okay,
- 1:19:59I think that the Bucks are not I mean, you look at his
- 1:20:01two teams. It is the Eagles and it is the forty nine ers,
- 1:20:04and they one of those two teams will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.
- 1:20:10Now that's what it's gonna be yep, absolutely again. Folks. Follow
