Latest / Halo Territory: A Los Angeles Angels Podcast / IN LIMBO: Angels MGR Kurt Suzuki gets vote of confidence from an interim GM who won't have final say
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Say goodnight to the Angels. Well, Mark, the 2026 season
- 0:14Speaker 1: came to a merciful end on Sunday in Seattle with
- 0:18Speaker 1: the Angels losing 100 games for the first time in
- 0:22Speaker 1: franchise history. Triple figures, man. Great for an RBI season.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I'm not sure about team losses.
- 0:29Speaker 2: 100 wins for a Los Angeles team.
- 0:34Speaker 1: That's correct.
- 0:35Speaker 2: The Dodgers.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Wait.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah, the Dodgers were able to do it against the Giants.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Credit to Tony V for getting thrown out in the
- 0:43Speaker 2: last game of the season. I believe with the retiring
- 0:48Speaker 2: umpires last game too, Marvin Hudson. So that's not Angel news,
- 0:52Speaker 2: but I did find that always fighting till the end.
- 0:55Speaker 2: And I think that was partly why interim GM John
- 1:01Speaker 2: Moselak today had some comments about I guess the Angels,
- 1:05Speaker 2: in his opinion, always fighting for their manager and playing
- 1:08Speaker 2: hard and one of the things he really liked.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yeah, in the wake of their 11th straight losing season
- 1:15Speaker 1: and 12th without a playoff spot, Mo met with the
- 1:18Speaker 1: media on Monday morning. Neither Mark nor I could be there.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I had commitments, but we did listen to an audio
- 1:25Speaker 1: of the press conference and we had three big takeaways.
- 1:29Speaker 1: The first one and the biggest, well, we'll just let
- 1:33Speaker 1: Sam Blum's tweet tell you about it. John Mozealek said
- 1:37Speaker 1: he wants to retain Kurt Suzuki back as Angels manager. However,
- 1:42Speaker 1: he said it's not his decision. It's up to the
- 1:45Speaker 1: next ownership group. Mozealek said he's been coordinating with Kevin
- 1:49Speaker 1: Demoff at Kroenke Sports Entertainment. And Kevin, of course, is
- 1:55Speaker 1: the president of the Los Angeles Rams. Mo added that
- 2:00Speaker 1: he's scheduled to speak with Demoff later on Monday. And
- 2:05Speaker 1: that Suzuki's future, that Mo's own future, and the short-term
- 2:09Speaker 1: and long-term baseball operations plans will be discussed further. So
- 2:16Speaker 1: we've made it pretty clear on HT how we feel
- 2:20Speaker 1: about Kurt Suzuki. And we want to reiterate, it's nothing personal.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I just feel like he did not do enough this
- 2:27Speaker 1: year to warrant returning after his one-year contract expires. But
- 2:33Speaker 1: Mo feels differently.
- 2:35Speaker 2: What do you think, Mark?
- 2:36Speaker 1: I mean, I can't say we were surprised by this,
- 2:38Speaker 1: but it still seemed a little odd to hear today.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I wasn't too surprised. I found this on the web.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Sounds surprising. Let me know what you found on the web.
- 2:52Speaker 2: I think that these are things that are kind of
- 2:57Speaker 2: leading up to this for the last month and change,
- 3:00Speaker 2: really ever since Mike Maddox was dismissed. A lot of
- 3:04Speaker 2: praise for Kurt Suzuki. A lot of statements that indicated
- 3:08Speaker 2: he liked the job that he was doing. He liked
- 3:11Speaker 2: the leadership skills. He liked that he was able to
- 3:13Speaker 2: keep the clubhouse together, that nobody quit on him. That's
- 3:16Speaker 2: subjective and probably up for debate. I don't know if
- 3:21Speaker 2: I would exactly say, and the biggest gripe by far
- 3:24Speaker 2: all year was the lack of hustle. And that is
- 3:28Speaker 2: something that I will never get off of, even if
- 3:30Speaker 2: I'm long gone off this show. Uh, it just is
- 3:34Speaker 2: in professional sports. You hustle, you, you give your best effort.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And I think, uh, John Mosaic also agrees with that.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Hence why he had a meeting with the shortstop a
- 3:43Speaker 2: while back to discuss this. I think that partly what
- 3:46Speaker 2: I heard when I listened to the transcript of the
- 3:48Speaker 2: audio today, uh, it wasn't so overt, but a lot
- 3:52Speaker 2: of the blame, uh, needs to be put. And I
- 3:55Speaker 2: would put it also there on previous general manager, Barry Manassian, uh,
- 4:01Speaker 2: for poor leadership, a very bad job with infrastructure. It
- 4:06Speaker 2: seems like there were very qualified front office people that
- 4:09Speaker 2: were not allowed to do their job to the best
- 4:12Speaker 2: of their ability, hindered the ball club. The draft strategy
- 4:17Speaker 2: was addressed to a long-term plan, not the draft and rush.
- 4:22Speaker 2: And as far as managing the bullpen, I think we'll
- 4:25Speaker 2: get into that too. That was one of the things
- 4:27Speaker 2: that was not a strength, but How much of that
- 4:29Speaker 2: was Kurt's fault, and how much of that was the
- 4:31Speaker 2: roster construction, do you think?
- 4:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that was an interesting thing to me, one of
- 4:37Speaker 1: Mo's most interesting comments. The Angels lost 22 games this
- 4:41Speaker 1: year when tied or leading after eight innings. But when
- 4:46Speaker 1: Sam Blum of The Athletic asked Kurt, asked Mo, specifically
- 4:50Speaker 1: if Kurt should be blamed for a bulk of those losses,
- 4:53Speaker 1: Mo Zalock said, quote, who should he have pitched in
- 4:56Speaker 1: those moments? We traded some bullpen pieces, and I don't
- 5:00Speaker 1: think he had the tools to successfully navigate a lot
- 5:04Speaker 1: of those games. I don't think he was making poor decisions.
- 5:08Speaker 1: He didn't have people available on given nights, and he
- 5:11Speaker 1: understood the hand he was dealt. I mean, certainly in
- 5:15Speaker 1: these last few weeks when they did lose some bullpen pieces,
- 5:19Speaker 1: whether it was Silseth via trade and Kirby Yates, my
- 5:25Speaker 1: favorite guy on the team, And then there were some
- 5:27Speaker 1: injuries to Sam Bachman. Even though Ben Joyce came back,
- 5:33Speaker 1: I don't think any of us, I don't think either
- 5:35Speaker 1: of us really thought he was 100% or totally right.
- 5:38Speaker 1: That bullpen was severely handcuffed over the last two months.
- 5:42Speaker 1: So yeah, maybe he wasn't given the pieces, but there
- 5:46Speaker 1: were a lot of games early in the season where
- 5:48Speaker 1: I questioned a lot of his late game bullpen moves.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Once again, how many of those moves were made by
- 5:55Speaker 1: Mike Maddox, the former pitching coach who was fired in
- 5:57Speaker 1: early August. Kurt always said he had the last, you know,
- 6:02Speaker 1: the last decision, or he made the final decision on these.
- 6:06Speaker 1: But we've speculated on this show that Mike Maddox might
- 6:09Speaker 1: have had a much bigger hand. Are you buying what
- 6:12Speaker 1: Mo said about specifically the bullpen management and how Kurt
- 6:18Speaker 1: didn't deserve a lot of the blame?
- 6:21Speaker 2: I think I am. I think that The key part
- 6:26Speaker 2: of that phrase was the hand that he was dealt,
- 6:29Speaker 2: paraphrasing possibly. But I think Fletch is the big poker player.
- 6:33Speaker 2: But are we saying this is a Devin Deuce offsuit?
- 6:39Speaker 2: I think that's what I'm kind of hearing. A team
- 6:42Speaker 2: that really lacked depth up and down, especially going into
- 6:48Speaker 2: the we didn't. I mean, we were speculating as to
- 6:50Speaker 2: who the closer was going to be. in spring training
- 6:53Speaker 2: where the games were not televised. And that's all we
- 6:57Speaker 2: could do was speculate. And I think I had thrown
- 6:58Speaker 2: out Kirby Yates and ended up being Romano, who I
- 7:02Speaker 2: thought actually looked pretty good. In hindsight, yeah.
- 7:07Speaker 1: In hindsight, he looks really good.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Small sample, and then he was kicked to the curb.
- 7:12Speaker 2: And we don't know why. I don't know why. Nobody does.
- 7:16Speaker 2: But Perry, the guy that did it. So, Kurt didn't
- 7:20Speaker 2: have the weapons. I mean, this comes down to a
- 7:23Speaker 2: lack of talent. And that's really, you know, it's going
- 7:27Speaker 2: to sound somewhat harsh or very harsh, but why does
- 7:30Speaker 2: a team struggle? And I think that inexperience is part
- 7:33Speaker 2: of it with this team. But you can argue, and
- 7:37Speaker 2: I think he did, that on the pitching side, that
- 7:39Speaker 2: you almost have to build in some regression looking towards
- 7:43Speaker 2: the future, which to me means that these teams especially
- 7:46Speaker 2: the starters performed in that sample the last couple of
- 7:50Speaker 2: months better than you can reasonably expect. Absolutely on fire.
- 7:54Speaker 2: And I think it's unfair to the players too. Urania,
- 7:58Speaker 2: for example, if you expect him to put up those
- 8:01Speaker 2: numbers every year, which he might, he's got incredible stuff,
- 8:05Speaker 2: but that, that creates a lot of you know, I
- 8:09Speaker 2: got to throw sub three ERA you know, innings. for
- 8:14Speaker 2: the entirety of a season. And I hope he does. Um,
- 8:17Speaker 2: Reed Detmers had a fantastic year. He could even get
- 8:19Speaker 2: better in some categories. Ryan Johnson. Uh, is it for real?
- 8:23Speaker 2: I I'd like to think it is. It's an odd
- 8:26Speaker 2: kind of mix. It's it's the, well, everything's odd about
- 8:29Speaker 2: watching him, but, um, you know, he, he did a
- 8:32Speaker 2: much better job. It looked very good. They got some
- 8:34Speaker 2: young arms too that are on the way, but I
- 8:37Speaker 2: also think that this team is going to have more
- 8:40Speaker 2: losing seasons, uh, to come. And I think that, The
- 8:44Speaker 2: main thing behind that is the poor defense and the
- 8:47Speaker 2: lack of offense, lack of pop in the offense. Just
- 8:51Speaker 2: not enough power from the positions that you rely on
- 8:54Speaker 2: for power. What do you think?
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yeah, offense is a huge question mark and hole. There's
- 9:01Speaker 1: so many holes in that lineup going in the offseason.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I think Mo was asked today about how many offense
- 9:10Speaker 1: and bullpen, two main problem areas. That's pretty clear. He
- 9:15Speaker 1: was asked, well, how quickly can we expect to see
- 9:20Speaker 1: some major improvements in these areas?
- 9:22Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Offensively, I'm not seeing a ton. We've talked about this
- 9:27Speaker 1: on the show before. Neither of us have seen much
- 9:30Speaker 1: in the free agent market. Offensively, that's going to turn
- 9:33Speaker 1: your lineup around. To me, the only area where you
- 9:36Speaker 1: can make some significant headway is in the bullpen, but
- 9:39Speaker 1: you're going to probably have to overpay for, you know,
- 9:44Speaker 1: Early 30s relievers who are, you know, coming off good years,
- 9:48Speaker 1: but we know how unpredictable the reliever market is. Just
- 9:52Speaker 1: look at so many of these angels signings in recent years.
- 9:57Speaker 2: You mentioned overpay, but these guys are going to have choices, too.
- 10:00Speaker 2: if they are. And how are you going to convince
- 10:04Speaker 2: quality players that are maybe prime a little past, but
- 10:09Speaker 2: still very capable of putting up numbers to come to
- 10:12Speaker 2: a place that are they going to be able to
- 10:15Speaker 2: compete immediately? And should they try and compete immediately in trade?
- 10:19Speaker 2: the farm system, which Mo is adamant today that that
- 10:22Speaker 2: is not a sound strategy. He doesn't want to have
- 10:26Speaker 2: another barren farm system ranked last or near the last.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I think that he's quite happy with their progression there,
- 10:32Speaker 2: and he should be because having a lousy major league
- 10:36Speaker 2: club and a lousy farm system is a bad recipe.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yeah, plus I think it depends where you get certain
- 10:43Speaker 1: guys in their careers. Like there may be a reliever
- 10:46Speaker 1: or two guys who have– had great careers and they
- 10:50Speaker 1: have not made the playoffs or they haven't won. And
- 10:53Speaker 1: I'm going to go to a team I know I
- 10:55Speaker 1: can make the playoffs with. So that's the guy you
- 10:58Speaker 1: have to overpay for a lot to get on a
- 11:00Speaker 1: team like the angels. So each, you know, a lot
- 11:03Speaker 1: of individual cases, but you know, just the bullpens relievers
- 11:08Speaker 1: being so much more available and, so much of a
- 11:12Speaker 1: variety of guys, lefties. There's some pretty good lefties on
- 11:15Speaker 1: the market. There's some guys who have clothes that are
- 11:17Speaker 1: going to be on the market. There's some decent arms
- 11:19Speaker 1: that are going to be available. To me, you have
- 11:21Speaker 1: to get at least two to three of those guys
- 11:24Speaker 1: somehow into your bullpen. I'm not going to say they're
- 11:29Speaker 1: going to lose 100 games again next year, but, yeah,
- 11:31Speaker 1: it's going to be really tough to have a winning season. Hey,
- 11:34Speaker 1: we're going to take a quick break for a word
- 11:36Speaker 1: from our sponsors, and we'll be right back with more
- 11:38Speaker 1: Halo territory.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Kratzy, just because the website says the tickets are sold
- 11:46Speaker 3: out doesn't mean you can't go see the Brewers in Milwaukee,
- 11:49Speaker 3: see the Dodgers in L.A., see the Rays in Tampa Bay.
- 11:52Speaker 3: You can go to SeatGeek and find the best seat available.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Pick wherever you want to sit and buy one.
- 11:58Speaker 4: There's no bad seats in Milwaukee because the stadium is
- 12:02Speaker 4: right on top of the field. It feels like you're
- 12:04Speaker 4: in the grass. L.A., just don't get a seat near
- 12:08Speaker 4: the speakers. But you can find out where the best
- 12:10Speaker 4: seats in each stadium are on SeatGeek. And of course
- 12:13Speaker 4: I have a code for you guys. You can use
- 12:15Speaker 4: code TERRITORY10 for 10% off your next set of tickets
- 12:18Speaker 4: at SeatGeek. That's 10% off any tickets with promo code TERRITORY10.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Make sure you click the link in the description to
- 12:27Speaker 3: download the app and have the code automatically added to
- 12:30Speaker 3: your account.
- 12:30Speaker 2: So you can use it later. And you know what?
- 12:32Speaker 2: If your team's not in the playoffs, it's no big deal.
- 12:36Speaker 4: Because SeatGeek's got you for tickets for NFL, for concerts,
- 12:40Speaker 4: anything that you want.
- 12:44Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbo, the
- 12:47Speaker 1: former Angel Slugger, and Mike DiGiovanna, the former LA Times
- 12:50Speaker 1: baseball writer, host of the show. Well, Foul Territory Network
- 12:56Speaker 1: has hooked us up with some new graphic toys. And
- 13:01Speaker 1: you can probably see, well, if you're on YouTube, you
- 13:03Speaker 1: can see on the side of your screen a lot
- 13:06Speaker 1: of stats. You get a lot of year-end numbers. We're
- 13:09Speaker 1: going to try this, see how you guys like it.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Let us know in the comments if it's too distracting.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Let us know if you like it.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Let us know.
- 13:17Speaker 1: But we want to at least try a few new
- 13:19Speaker 1: things here. Before we resume the conversation about today's press conference,
- 13:25Speaker 1: we did want to mention some of the fan reaction
- 13:27Speaker 1: to the news that Mo wants Kurt back. Here's some
- 13:33Speaker 1: of that on my Twitter from Kevin McIntyre. Would be
- 13:36Speaker 1: a horrific mistake. From 13 Shades of Grey, this only
- 13:40Speaker 1: solidifies my wish for a new GM and a new manager.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Fully flush and start from square zero. I didn't know
- 13:47Speaker 1: there was a square zero. And from TKD, dude, what?
- 13:53Speaker 1: So I think that sort of gives you a pretty
- 13:56Speaker 1: good feel, sample size, small sample size, granted, but of
- 14:02Speaker 1: how the fans feel about Kurt Suzuki. And I want
- 14:05Speaker 1: to reiterate, you know, this is nothing personal. I really,
- 14:10Speaker 1: in hindsight, I think I have more respect, Mark, for
- 14:14Speaker 1: Kurt even taking this job when you knew you were
- 14:16Speaker 1: walking into almost a no-win situation with a team that
- 14:20Speaker 1: wasn't going to compete with a one-year contract. And when
- 14:24Speaker 1: you look at some of the personalities they had in
- 14:26Speaker 1: the team, you know, Jorge Soler, Yuan Mankata, guys who
- 14:30Speaker 1: just weren't the type of, let's just say they weren't
- 14:34Speaker 1: the Wade Meckler types of guys who you know are
- 14:36Speaker 1: going to just run through a wall for you.
- 14:39Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I'm not saying my feelings about Kurt have changed. I
- 14:44Speaker 1: think there was a lot of things that he just
- 14:48Speaker 1: wasn't very good at as a manager, and some of
- 14:50Speaker 1: those happened in the first half of the season before.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Mo was here.
- 14:53Speaker 1: A lot of that had to do with managing the clubhouse,
- 14:57Speaker 1: nipping some of these things in the bud in terms
- 15:00Speaker 1: of the lack of hustle. But I don't know. Do
- 15:03Speaker 1: you view Kurt any differently just knowing how difficult the
- 15:08Speaker 1: situation really was. And maybe, I don't know, maybe I
- 15:11Speaker 1: have a little more understanding of why most sort.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Of feels about, feels how he does about Kurt. Go
- 15:20Speaker 2: back to the beginning of the year, Sam Blum, I
- 15:22Speaker 2: think the took the under on 65 wins and he
- 15:25Speaker 2: was right about that. And then, you know, there was
- 15:28Speaker 2: some other rhetoric that it was foolish to dismiss this
- 15:32Speaker 2: ball club so soon. It's just ridiculous. to write them off.
- 15:37Speaker 2: And what was it? I don't think it was. I
- 15:41Speaker 2: think I was being too nice when we did our
- 15:43Speaker 2: preseason predictions. I didn't see a good team. I don't
- 15:46Speaker 2: think you did either. It was, if everything goes right,
- 15:52Speaker 2: maybe we can sniff 500 and buy everything, literally everything.
- 15:56Speaker 2: And to be honest, the starting pitch, Jose Soriano was
- 15:59Speaker 2: incredible for us, Decent sample size. Reid Detmer's had a
- 16:04Speaker 2: fantastic season. You have Walbert Urania. You had a healthy
- 16:07Speaker 2: Mike Trout. We'll talk about him in a second. But
- 16:11Speaker 2: he was as available as he has been in many years.
- 16:16Speaker 2: OPS over 800, 100-and-something walks. The defense has declined. But
- 16:22Speaker 2: it's hard to say that this was not– I mean,
- 16:24Speaker 2: I think this was a win for Mike Trout in
- 16:26Speaker 2: terms of battling the injuries and– you know, mentally there's
- 16:31Speaker 2: a ton that goes into that too. Trusting that the
- 16:34Speaker 2: knee is going to hold up. And he was out
- 16:36Speaker 2: there minus the last game, which some people had opinions
- 16:40Speaker 2: about too, but I'm not surprised. Uh, that's a veteran courtesy, uh,
- 16:44Speaker 2: to me. And people that get hung up on this
- 16:50Speaker 2: 100 games, it's just silly. It's silly. What is 99 losses?
- 16:54Speaker 2: It's equally as garbage. Uh, there's no difference to me
- 16:58Speaker 2: at all. Um, if, if it's, why would you even
- 17:01Speaker 2: want to mention that, uh, to anyone anyway, as a
- 17:04Speaker 2: point of pride, Hey, we've never lost a hundred games.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Like who people would laugh in my, I would laugh.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Somebody dropped that on me. Well, how much have you won?
- 17:14Speaker 2: It's about the winning and, uh, just being, you know,
- 17:18Speaker 2: a team that has not gotten there. And I think
- 17:20Speaker 2: that's part of it too, that they didn't really capitalize
- 17:23Speaker 2: on the draft picks, uh, when they were this new
- 17:27Speaker 2: format doesn't reward the big tankers like, like they used to,
- 17:31Speaker 2: but this is a team that at least has a
- 17:34Speaker 2: strategy now, as far as whether or not people agree
- 17:38Speaker 2: with John Moselec's comments today, that's for them to debate.
- 17:44Speaker 2: I'm not surprised by what I heard. I think that
- 17:46Speaker 2: there were a few things that didn't get any coverage
- 17:48Speaker 2: that surprised me. I think one of which is he
- 17:51Speaker 2: made a little footnote at some point that what the
- 17:56Speaker 2: Best thing for some of these players, and I think
- 17:58Speaker 2: two in particular I thought about, might be a little
- 18:01Speaker 2: more seasoning down on the farm. I believe he might
- 18:03Speaker 2: have been talking about second and third base. I don't
- 18:06Speaker 2: know if you heard that part. Yeah, I heard him.
- 18:11Speaker 1: He was saying that Guzman at 22 would have been
- 18:14Speaker 1: a college senior this year. So that's a lot, obviously.
- 18:20Speaker 2: I'm going to infer that Christian Moore was also part
- 18:22Speaker 2: of that too. And I think about myself at that age, 22,
- 18:27Speaker 2: I was playing in the fall league, 23, I was
- 18:29Speaker 2: in the Dominican Republic and 24 after I'd already played, uh, uh,
- 18:34Speaker 2: September and the big leagues, I was on my way
- 18:37Speaker 2: to Venezuela. And I think that's the big difference today.
- 18:40Speaker 2: A guy like Christian Moore, uh, where does he go?
- 18:43Speaker 2: I am. If it were me, uh, I would, you
- 18:46Speaker 2: want to figure it out in the game in, in,
- 18:49Speaker 2: and I think that's where Venezuela gave me a huge
- 18:51Speaker 2: confidence boost going into my, uh, full-fledged rookie season, uh,
- 18:55Speaker 2: where I was able to hold my own facing good competition.
- 18:59Speaker 2: The fans absolutely bring it. You're going to face pressure.
- 19:02Speaker 2: And I think he needs to face, uh, pressure because
- 19:05Speaker 2: what does more seasoning look like in Salt Lake city?
- 19:09Speaker 2: That's not a great recipe. Uh, maybe someone can argue
- 19:12Speaker 2: that it is and convince me that, um, they could
- 19:15Speaker 2: benefit from that, but it's almost like they don't have
- 19:19Speaker 2: this in between stage for guys that aren't, um, you know,
- 19:23Speaker 2: working their way up from a ball, double A, triple A,
- 19:26Speaker 2: that is the sequence. So a couple of questions that
- 19:29Speaker 2: are intriguing. Maybe success can be found in a facility somewhere.
- 19:35Speaker 2: I'd like to see it.
- 19:36Speaker 1: I don't know if it's still the case, but I
- 19:38Speaker 1: know at least when you were coming up and 20,
- 19:40Speaker 1: 30 years ago, didn't they always send kids like Christian
- 19:44Speaker 1: Moore and Guzman down to Venezuela or the Dominican so
- 19:47Speaker 1: they can learn to hit breaking balls? It just seemed
- 19:49Speaker 1: like there are a lot of older pitchers down there
- 19:51Speaker 1: throwing a lot of junk a lot of off speed
- 19:53Speaker 1: and boy if there's one thing both these kids need
- 19:57Speaker 1: a lot of work on is hitting breaking balls I.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Think it yes the answer is yes especially Venezuela a
- 20:03Speaker 2: lot more off speed Dominican has more uh hard throwers
- 20:07Speaker 2: uh And that was at least my observation, although Venezuela
- 20:11Speaker 2: has their fair share too. But that's where I got
- 20:13Speaker 2: a lot better at hitting the breaking ball. I think
- 20:14Speaker 2: I touched on that before. But also, you're going to
- 20:17Speaker 2: hear it. You're going to hear fans that are on you.
- 20:20Speaker 2: You're going to have crowds that are much bigger than
- 20:23Speaker 2: maybe that you're used to. And there is a pressure
- 20:25Speaker 2: to perform because down there, they do not mess around.
- 20:28Speaker 2: If you are below the Mendoza line, they're going to
- 20:31Speaker 2: catch it. And they don't care about your prospect status,
- 20:34Speaker 2: your draft. No, I'm serious. Your draft status. You put
- 20:37Speaker 2: up or you don't and they'll find somebody else. And
- 20:40Speaker 2: they've done it for. And I think that's a very
- 20:43Speaker 2: interesting element. I got fired down there in the Dominican
- 20:46Speaker 2: and I deserve to be fired. I wasn't playing well.
- 20:49Speaker 2: When they did it, I said, yeah, of course I
- 20:51Speaker 2: would fire me. So that is partly why I'm very
- 20:57Speaker 2: interested in today's world with the player development, more scientifically.
- 21:02Speaker 2: All the numbers, but how do you create that confidence
- 21:05Speaker 2: for guys that could really use it going into, you know,
- 21:08Speaker 2: next year's big league season? Yeah.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Let's turn to another huge takeaway from today. And this
- 21:14Speaker 1: one I was really glad to see. We'll go to
- 21:19Speaker 1: Jeff Fletcher's tweet. Mo also said Mike Trout came to
- 21:23Speaker 1: him about playing left field and more DH next year.
- 21:26Speaker 1: And Mo Zaloc called that a win-win for Trout and
- 21:30Speaker 1: the Angels.
- 21:32Speaker 4: Boy, I.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Think we talked about it on our last show.
- 21:36Speaker 1: It was, what, four or five years ago when we
- 21:38Speaker 1: got to spring training and Joe Maddon said Trout was
- 21:40Speaker 1: going to move to a corner. Trout responded very negatively.
- 21:44Speaker 1: And within, what, two or three days, Trout was back
- 21:47Speaker 1: in center field, sort of like, how dare you? I
- 21:50Speaker 1: don't know if, I can't remember if they made that
- 21:53Speaker 1: move without consulting him first and if that's what he
- 21:55Speaker 1: was pissed about. But either way, he was not happy
- 21:57Speaker 1: with that. But boy, this year, whole nother story. first
- 22:04Speaker 1: of all, it's great that Mike Trout was healthy enough
- 22:06Speaker 1: to play over, I think it was over 100 games
- 22:08Speaker 1: in center field. However, Trout, according to Fangrass, had a
- 22:13Speaker 1: minus eight defensive runs saved. That was 14th out of
- 22:17Speaker 1: 17 qualifying center fielders. He had a minus five outs
- 22:22Speaker 1: above average. That was 16th and an overall defensive rating
- 22:27Speaker 1: of minus 5.7. And that was 16th, the only Other
- 22:32Speaker 1: center fielder who is considered worse was Trent Grisham of
- 22:36Speaker 1: the Yankees. So the eyeballs tell you what the numbers
- 22:43Speaker 1: don't need. The numbers back up what the eyeballs have
- 22:46Speaker 1: seen all year. Mark, I don't know if physically it's
- 22:51Speaker 1: going to help him that much to move to a
- 22:54Speaker 1: corner or be that big a difference. But if the
- 22:57Speaker 1: Angels can upgrade defensively as center fielder, preferably with a
- 23:00Speaker 1: guy who who can bring something on the offensive side,
- 23:03Speaker 1: that's a win-win in my mind.
- 23:07Speaker 2: I think that it is, it needs to be said.
- 23:09Speaker 2: I think that Mike, if he, I'm not going to
- 23:13Speaker 2: say if this seems to be how it went down,
- 23:15Speaker 2: if he is saying it himself, then he knows, um,
- 23:18Speaker 2: the reality of it. You can't beat father time. I
- 23:21Speaker 2: believe there were only two center fielders, um, Mike and
- 23:25Speaker 2: Frederick Mullins that were 30 plus years old. Oh, 30 plus.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Wow.
- 23:29Speaker 2: If I, if I'm wrong, um, Correct me. Correct me
- 23:32Speaker 2: all you want. But let's say that that is true.
- 23:35Speaker 2: That's very indicative of the way the game is going
- 23:39Speaker 2: as a whole. Center field is a position that has
- 23:42Speaker 2: got to be manned by someone with excellent speed, excellent
- 23:46Speaker 2: ability to save runs on extra base hits come in.
- 23:50Speaker 2: And I think that that's probably the area. Well, going
- 23:53Speaker 2: back wasn't a strength either. I think the balls coming in,
- 23:56Speaker 2: there were a lot that fell. A lot of people
- 23:58Speaker 2: thought he played too deep. Uh, but if, well, that's
- 24:04Speaker 2: the dilemma, but I think the sound strategy is, is to,
- 24:08Speaker 2: when you get older and you know that things are declining,
- 24:12Speaker 2: you want to limit the extra base hits more than
- 24:14Speaker 2: the dink singles. They're both going to hurt, but you're
- 24:17Speaker 2: giving up two, uh, you know, doubles, triples. Um, those
- 24:21Speaker 2: really sting those. I saw something where, um, you know,
- 24:24Speaker 2: these defensive runs saved, there was a number attributed to, uh,
- 24:28Speaker 2: I can't remember who it was, but an ill-advised attempt
- 24:31Speaker 2: at a ball that got by for a triple, and
- 24:33Speaker 2: it was almost a full run value. So that at
- 24:38Speaker 2: least opened my eyes to how important it is. And
- 24:41Speaker 2: it's not going to be the same for infielders, and
- 24:43Speaker 2: they don't grade it the same. But all of these
- 24:47Speaker 2: things matter. Why left field over right field, do you think?
- 24:50Speaker 1: I think left field is a little less demanding, although
- 24:53Speaker 1: in Anaheim, Angel Stadium, I'm not sure that's the case
- 24:57Speaker 1: because anything over your head in right field in Anaheim
- 25:01Speaker 1: is probably going to hit off that big wall or
- 25:03Speaker 1: be a home run.
- 25:05Speaker 2: I think the throw is a third. We'll have to
- 25:07Speaker 2: ask somebody who's played both of those. Yeah, I think
- 25:09Speaker 2: the throw is a third.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Wait. All right, we'll get to that in a sec.
- 25:15Speaker 1: You ask me, I'm going to give you my answer.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I think the throws from left field are a lot
- 25:19Speaker 1: easier to third base. You don't need a Vladdy Guerrero-like
- 25:22Speaker 1: cannon to play left field. I think you can get
- 25:25Speaker 1: away with a little bit more there. And I think
- 25:27Speaker 1: left field, uh, let's just say Mike Trout cannot be
- 25:32Speaker 1: any worse than Jose Siri out there.
- 25:34Speaker 2: I'll, I'll, I'll put it that way.
- 25:37Speaker 1: That's a whole nother can of worms, but Mark, since
- 25:40Speaker 1: you have played both corner spots and the corner infield spots,
- 25:44Speaker 1: including third base and a no hitter, what is the difference, uh,
- 25:49Speaker 1: I assume the angles are similar from a lefty, you know,
- 25:52Speaker 1: in left field, the righty slicing to the right field.
- 25:54Speaker 2: They're not.
- 25:55Speaker 4: All right.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Do educate us. This is my opinion, and I don't
- 26:00Speaker 2: have and didn't have the athleticism that some of these
- 26:04Speaker 2: guys do. Although, Siri's got the athleticism, and, you know,
- 26:08Speaker 2: we saw. He did pop a home run. I think
- 26:11Speaker 2: that we'd be remiss not to mention that big contribution. But, yeah.
- 26:16Speaker 2: right field to me came a lot more naturally. I
- 26:18Speaker 2: always advocated, um, when I could let Seattle, for example,
- 26:22Speaker 2: it always stick me in left field. Uh, I was
- 26:25Speaker 2: no good out there. I don't know what it was,
- 26:27Speaker 2: but I was not very good on the left side
- 26:29Speaker 2: of the field. I think we, you know, LOL, um,
- 26:33Speaker 2: as I do to the third base play, but I,
- 26:36Speaker 2: it just, um, and I had some arm strength, but
- 26:38Speaker 2: it wasn't something that, uh, I gunned to my head.
- 26:42Speaker 2: And I think that at some point, I know the
- 26:44Speaker 2: NFL has done this, but, eye dominance. It's going to
- 26:47Speaker 2: sound very geeky, but LSU really leaned into having receivers
- 26:53Speaker 2: run routes that only favored their dominant eye and the
- 26:57Speaker 2: catch percentage. I remember talking to Jack Marucci about this
- 27:00Speaker 2: years ago, bat maker and head athletic trainer. But I
- 27:05Speaker 2: think that for me, it probably came down to the
- 27:07Speaker 2: fact that I got much better reads in right field
- 27:12Speaker 2: and I wasn't as apt. In left field too, you got...
- 27:16Speaker 2: it's changed with the, with the change of hit, the
- 27:18Speaker 2: style of hitting, but there used to be a lot
- 27:20Speaker 2: more little left-handed guys that would hit those bloopers. Um,
- 27:25Speaker 2: and kind of just kind of like what Arias does,
- 27:28Speaker 2: does kind of like what Shauna will does, uh, and
- 27:31Speaker 2: punch it down the line. And I was coming in
- 27:34Speaker 2: being a right-hander trying to go across the body. Um,
- 27:37Speaker 2: and usually if I was coming in and across, not
- 27:41Speaker 2: a lot of good things happened. So, You got to
- 27:44Speaker 2: pick your spots. I know Meckler had a couple kind
- 27:46Speaker 2: of clunk. I think in Sacramento, he just something about
- 27:49Speaker 2: the lights. He's a better defender than that. But at
- 27:52Speaker 2: the end, there were a couple of plays. So I
- 27:54Speaker 2: was curious as to kind of what was going on.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Part of it, too, and this is going to sound stupid, but,
- 28:01Speaker 2: you know, running out every day to your position in
- 28:05Speaker 2: between innings. Sometimes it's the shorter route. Depends where your
- 28:09Speaker 2: dugout is, right? It does depend where your dugout is,
- 28:13Speaker 2: but I have to assume Mike came up, and I
- 28:15Speaker 2: believe when he got called up, he was playing left field.
- 28:17Speaker 1: He got hit 19. That was his first, I believe,
- 28:19Speaker 1: his debut was in left field.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Now, why was that? Maybe because the arm at that
- 28:24Speaker 2: time was not strong, and it was adequate, but below average.
- 28:30Speaker 1: They also had a guy who might have won nine
- 28:32Speaker 1: gold gloves in center field, a guy by the name
- 28:35Speaker 1: of Torrey Hunter.
- 28:36Speaker 2: They had plenty of depth. Peter Borges played a great
- 28:39Speaker 2: center field, too. Oh, my God. Go ahead.
- 28:42Speaker 1: I'll never forget the game in Baltimore where Trout made
- 28:47Speaker 1: that insane catch with half of his body above the
- 28:51Speaker 1: wall and right center. And later that game, he was
- 28:54Speaker 1: replaced by Borges for defensive purposes.
- 28:59Speaker 2: I don't think J.J. Hardy will forget that game either.
- 29:01Speaker 4: Oh, I know.
- 29:02Speaker 2: That was amazing. Why was he... taken out i was
- 29:05Speaker 2: i was in left field if i'm not mistaken i
- 29:07Speaker 2: should have been long gone before.
- 29:09Speaker 1: He maybe he i i'm gonna go back and look
- 29:11Speaker 1: at the box for when we're done he might have
- 29:13Speaker 1: got moved to left is my guess because yeah that
- 29:15Speaker 1: was the second year he was still playing some left
- 29:17Speaker 1: field all right our third takeaway and this one is
- 29:22Speaker 1: not that surprising uh from monday's presser with john mosey
- 29:25Speaker 1: luck mo said in terms uh of the.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Gm search it's now on pause What that means.
- 29:34Speaker 1: And he also said that his own status with the team,
- 29:37Speaker 1: and we've speculated that he sure is speaking and acting
- 29:40Speaker 1: and maybe sounding like a guy who doesn't want to
- 29:43Speaker 1: leave but ultimately this is going to be the the
- 29:47Speaker 1: decision of the cronky group they may have somebody completely
- 29:50Speaker 1: else in mind to run the team, to be a
- 29:54Speaker 1: president of baseball operations. That person would pick a GM.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Those two people would probably pick a new manager. All
- 30:01Speaker 1: this speculation about Kurt Suzuki could be moot if Mo
- 30:05Speaker 1: is not back. So Mo doesn't really have any more
- 30:09Speaker 1: clarity on his status. That's going to probably be decided
- 30:12Speaker 1: over the next few weeks. Remember, his contract goes through December.
- 30:16Speaker 1: He's still considered interim GM and a consultant. Um, any
- 30:21Speaker 1: other takeaways, Mark, from today's presser?
- 30:26Speaker 2: I think that it was, I'm going to go back
- 30:30Speaker 2: and listen.
- 30:31Speaker 4: What was it?
- 30:31Speaker 2: About 25 minutes or so. There was a lot said,
- 30:33Speaker 2: and I don't know how the media as a whole,
- 30:35Speaker 2: you could answer this obviously, but you, how do you
- 30:38Speaker 2: choose what parts to cover? Uh, probably obviously the ones
- 30:41Speaker 2: that are going to get the most looks, the most reactions,
- 30:44Speaker 2: but there was a fair amount of things buried in
- 30:46Speaker 2: there too. One of them was, uh, Shauna Wells, uh,
- 30:50Speaker 2: inability to stay on the field for the entirety of
- 30:52Speaker 2: the season. And I think that that is something that
- 30:56Speaker 2: Mo is clearly stating he would like to see improved.
- 31:01Speaker 2: He talked about Zach Netto's maturation and really impressing him.
- 31:06Speaker 2: I guess they've had a number of conversations. I'm not
- 31:08Speaker 2: surprised that he's followed up beyond the one because I
- 31:11Speaker 2: think that Zach strikes me as a guy that might
- 31:14Speaker 2: need general reminders and some positive reinforcement from time to time.
- 31:18Speaker 2: And that's a good thing. And I think that they're
- 31:20Speaker 2: going to really need him to continue to do that.
- 31:24Speaker 2: As Joe Adele, I think was somewhat, or did a
- 31:27Speaker 2: nice job as a vocal leader, let's call it. And
- 31:30Speaker 2: then probably a little bit of a void after that.
- 31:34Speaker 2: And overall, I just, when you put up those stats earlier,
- 31:38Speaker 2: I mean, looking at the offense, it was, you talk
- 31:42Speaker 2: about why this team struggle. I can't get off of
- 31:45Speaker 2: some of these things and led the league in strikeouts
- 31:47Speaker 2: and lowest OPS, lowest slugging percentage, not a lot of doubles,
- 31:55Speaker 2: not a lot of triples. 29th in runs, yeah. Yeah,
- 32:00Speaker 2: the RBIs, I think that that's one thing too. When
- 32:04Speaker 2: evaluating players sometimes, and that would be my last point,
- 32:08Speaker 2: guys get very attached to their hometown players or the
- 32:10Speaker 2: players they root for. Comparing them to players on their
- 32:14Speaker 2: own team, And when you're comparing guys to players on
- 32:18Speaker 2: this team, it's not the highest bar. So I think
- 32:23Speaker 2: that people can get a little bit annoyed. Is there
- 32:25Speaker 2: a best contact hitter? And it's like, well, that may
- 32:29Speaker 2: be the case, but how does he compare to the
- 32:31Speaker 2: rest of the league? If you were to take trade
- 32:34Speaker 2: calls today, how many people would want this player? Would
- 32:37Speaker 2: the phone be ringing off the hook? Would it be
- 32:39Speaker 2: kind of silent? So when I look at some of
- 32:41Speaker 2: these things, One last point, I guess, too, is I
- 32:46Speaker 2: saw a footnote. I don't think we've covered it since,
- 32:48Speaker 2: but they are going to encourage him to get into
- 32:51Speaker 2: better shape. And I think that's something that you advocated, too,
- 32:53Speaker 2: to be able to catch more games.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I just think if he's going to be an
- 32:57Speaker 1: asset offensively, if you can have that offensive asset behind the.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Plate, look at what Cal Raleigh did for.
- 33:03Speaker 1: The Mariners last year.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Oh, you like that one, huh, Mark? No pun intended.
- 33:11Speaker 1: But yeah, no, I think, I think physically he, you know,
- 33:15Speaker 1: he is athletic. I think he will have a lot
- 33:18Speaker 1: better chance than the angels apparently agree with this of
- 33:21Speaker 1: catching 80 to 90 may a hundred might be a reach,
- 33:25Speaker 1: but you know, more than 80 to more than half
- 33:27Speaker 1: the games. If he, if he thins up, if he,
- 33:31Speaker 1: if he leans up a bit and is not carrying
- 33:33Speaker 1: that much weight because it's, It's a brutal position to play.
- 33:37Speaker 1: It's the most demanding, grueling position in baseball, one of
- 33:41Speaker 1: the more grueling positions in all of sports. And if
- 33:44Speaker 1: he's worn down physically from trying to catch too much
- 33:47Speaker 1: because he's carrying a little too much weight, I can't
- 33:51Speaker 1: imagine that not affecting him at the plate. We'll just
- 33:54Speaker 1: leave that at that.
- 33:56Speaker 2: I think it was well said. I think that– I
- 33:59Speaker 2: don't know if he's verbalized that he– I haven't seen
- 34:01Speaker 2: anything related to the fatigue. I just think the overall–
- 34:04Speaker 2: athleticism and saving some runs, uh, if needed, but I
- 34:08Speaker 2: like him as a player. The numbers were somewhat modest,
- 34:12Speaker 2: but I look at the, uh, what stands out. I
- 34:15Speaker 2: see premium bat speed and I see very good hand eye.
- 34:19Speaker 2: And I think that this is a guy that could
- 34:21Speaker 2: really contribute and has got that thump, uh, weird to
- 34:24Speaker 2: talk about this team because that's what they were known
- 34:26Speaker 2: for a couple of years ago, but, uh, not so
- 34:29Speaker 2: much now. Um, so we did the best we could with,
- 34:32Speaker 2: with what we had today. I think next episode, Maybe
- 34:35Speaker 2: we'll have more clarity. I doubt that we'll get some
- 34:37Speaker 2: concrete answers on these things. And feel free in the
- 34:41Speaker 2: comments section. I think somebody told you to get an
- 34:43Speaker 2: Otani angel bobblehead.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Oh, I forgot to put that up there. I'm sorry.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I'll get that for the next show. Hey, one last
- 34:49Speaker 1: thought on today's presser. One thing that also stood out
- 34:52Speaker 1: to me was if Mo does stay, he does seem
- 34:55Speaker 1: to have developed a pretty good working and personal relationship
- 34:59Speaker 1: with Zach Netto. his actual quote to me, he really
- 35:04Speaker 1: grew up and his teammates started to look at him
- 35:06Speaker 1: as a leader. I was impressed with how he grew
- 35:10Speaker 1: as a player. He's a talented guy. And I don't
- 35:13Speaker 1: think either of us have ever questioned his talent. It's
- 35:16Speaker 1: a matter of consistent focus of attitude of effort. And
- 35:23Speaker 1: I don't know. It leads me to believe that if
- 35:25Speaker 1: Mo does stay on board, I think Zach Netto is
- 35:28Speaker 1: going to be here to stay as well, that he, Yeah,
- 35:31Speaker 1: he is clearly the best player on this team right now,
- 35:36Speaker 1: and he can do a lot of things. What was it,
- 35:38Speaker 1: 60-something extra base hits, 20-something stolen bases, led the team
- 35:42Speaker 1: in homers, had a pretty good year, especially when, you know,
- 35:47Speaker 1: in the last two months, last 40, 50 games of
- 35:49Speaker 1: the season. So moving forward, maybe Zach Netto can feel
- 35:53Speaker 1: a little more loved. Maybe he gets that contract extension
- 35:56Speaker 1: we think he wants.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Maybe with....
- 36:01Speaker 1: With that feeling of security, he'll feel more wanted and,
- 36:04Speaker 1: and just, just feel more reasons to, you know, put
- 36:09Speaker 1: his best effort forward every night and, and maybe grow
- 36:12Speaker 1: up a little. So I thought that was a positive
