- 0:32Today's episode is all about pizza.
- 0:35We're going to learn where pizza came from, what goes into making
- 0:38it, and the many delicious types you can find around the world.
- 0:42So get ready to discover why pizza is one of the most popular
- 0:46foods on the planet. Let's start with the history of
- 0:49pizza. Even though pizza feels like a
- 0:51modern treat, it has actually been around for a very long
- 0:54time. Long before pizza looked the way
- 0:56it does today, people ate flatbreads with toppings.
- 1:00Thousands of years ago. In ancient Egypt, Greece, and
- 1:03Rome, people baked flatbreads in ovens and topped them with oil
- 1:07and herbs. These early versions didn't have
- 1:10tomato sauce or cheese, but they were a tasty way to use bread as
- 1:13a plate for other foods. The pizza we know and love today
- 1:17began to take shape in the city of Naples, Italy.
- 1:20Naples is a coastal city, and in the 1700s and 1800s it was a
- 1:25busy place full of workers and families who needed food that
- 1:28was affordable, quick and filling.
- 1:30Bakers and Naples started selling flatbreads topped with
- 1:33tomatoes, which had just been brought to Europe from the
- 1:36Americas. At first, not everyone liked
- 1:39tomatoes because some people thought they were poisonous, but
- 1:41the Neapolitans gave it a try. Soon these tomato topped
- 1:45flatbreads became very popular. One of the most famous pizzas,
- 1:49the Margarita, was created in Naples in the late 1800s.
- 1:54The story goes that a chef wanted to make a pizza for Queen
- 1:57Margarita of Italy. He topped the pizza with
- 1:59tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and fresh basil.
- 2:03These three toppings made the pizza look like the Italian
- 2:06flag, red, white and green. The queen loved it, and the
- 2:10Margarita pizza became famous not only in Italy but around the
- 2:14world. Now let's talk about the
- 2:16contents of a pizza. At its most basic, a pizza is
- 2:20made-up of three main parts, the crust, the sauce, and the
- 2:24toppings. The crust is the base of the
- 2:26pizza. It's made from dough, which
- 2:28usually contains flour, water, yeast, salt, and sometimes a
- 2:33little bit of sugar or oil. The yeast helps the dough rise
- 2:37and become fluffy. Some crusts are thin and crispy,
- 2:41while others are thick and chewy.
- 2:43Some pizzas even have stuffed crusts, which means there's
- 2:46cheese baked inside the edge of the crust.
- 2:49Next comes the sauce. The most common pizza sauce is
- 2:52made from tomatoes. The tomatoes are crushed and
- 2:55cooked with herbs like oregano, basil and garlic to give the
- 2:59sauce a rich flavor. In some places, people use
- 3:02different sauces like pesto, which is made from basil, pine
- 3:06nuts, cheese and olive oil, or even a white sauce made from
- 3:10cream or cheese. After the sauce comes the
- 3:13cheese. Mozzarella is the most popular
- 3:15cheese for pizza because it melts well and gives pizza that
- 3:19stretchy, gooey texture that many people love.
- 3:23Some pizzas use other cheeses too, like cheddar, parmesan,
- 3:27provolone, or ricotta to add different flavors.
- 3:30Finally, we have the toppings. This is where pizza gets really
- 3:34creative. Classic toppings include
- 3:37pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, bell Peppers, and
- 3:41olives. Some people love extra cheese,
- 3:44while others add vegetables like spinach, artichokes, or even
- 3:48pineapple. In some parts of the world,
- 3:51people use seafood, corn, or even eggs as toppings.
- 3:54There are so many options that almost anyone can find a pizza
- 3:58combination they like. Did you know that in Japan, you
- 4:00can find pizzas topped with squid, mayonnaise or even
- 4:04teriyaki chicken? In Brazil, green peas are a
- 4:07popular topping. In Sweden, people sometimes put
- 4:11bananas and Curry powder on their pizza.
- 4:13These different toppings show how pizza has changed and
- 4:17adapted to different cultures and tastes all over the world.
- 4:20Now, let's explore the different types of pizza you might see or
- 4:24try. There are many styles, but here
- 4:27are some of the most famous ones.
- 4:29First, there's Neapolitan pizza. This is the original Italian
- 4:33pizza from Naples. It has a thin soft crust, simple
- 4:37tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella cheese and basil.
- 4:40Neapolitan pizzas are usually cooked in a very hot wood fired
- 4:44oven for just a couple of minutes, which gives them a
- 4:46slightly charred, puffy crust. Next is New York style pizza,
- 4:51which is very popular in the United States.
- 4:54It has a thin, wide crust that's crispy on the outside but soft
- 4:58enough to fold in half. New York pizzas often come in
- 5:01large slices, and people like to grab a slice as a quick snack or
- 5:05lunch. The classic toppings are tomato
- 5:07sauce and mozzarella cheese, but you can find all kinds of
- 5:11options, from pepperoni to mushrooms to extra cheese.
- 5:14Chicago style deep dish pizza is another American favorite.
- 5:19Unlike most pizzas, this one is baked in a deep pan, which gives
- 5:23it a thick, buttery crust. The toppings are layered in
- 5:27reverse order. Cheese goes on the bottom, then
- 5:29meat or vegetables, and finally a chunky tomato sauce on top.
- 5:33Deep dish pizzas are hearty and filling, almost like a pizza
- 5:37pie. Sicilian pizza comes from the
- 5:39island of Sicily and Italy. It has a thick, rectangular
- 5:43crust that's soft and airy, almost like focaccia bread.
- 5:47Sicilian pizzas are often topped with tomato sauce, onions,
- 5:51herbs, and sometimes anchovies. In the United States, Sicilian
- 5:55pizza is sometimes called grandma pizza and is served in
- 5:59square slices. California style pizza is known
- 6:02for its creative and unusual toppings.
- 6:05Chefs in California like to experiment with fresh
- 6:08ingredients like arugula, goat cheese, smoked salmon, or
- 6:12roasted vegetables. The crust is usually thin and
- 6:15crispy, and the focus is on fresh, local ingredients.
- 6:19There's also Detroit style pizza, which has a thick, chewy
- 6:22crust that's baked in a rectangular pan.
- 6:25The cheese goes all the way to the edges, so it gets crispy and
- 6:29caramelized. The sauce is often spooned on
- 6:32top of the cheese and toppings instead of underneath.
- 6:35Of course, there are many more local and regional styles of
- 6:38pizza around the world. In India, you might find pizzas
- 6:42with spicy chicken tikka or pain or cheese.
- 6:45In Turkey, there's a version called pied that's shaped like a
- 6:49boat and filled with meats, cheese and vegetables.
- 6:52In Australia, people sometimes add BBQ sauce and shrimp to
- 6:56their pizzas. Here's another fun fact.
- 6:59In the United States alone, people eat about 3 billion
- 7:02pizzas every year. That's almost 350 slices per
- 7:06second. Pizza is so popular that there's
- 7:09even a National Pizza Month celebrated every October.
- 7:13Pizza has also set some impressive records.
- 7:16The largest pizza ever made was over 13,000 square feet and was
- 7:20baked in Rome, Italy in 2012. That's bigger than many houses.
- 7:26The longest pizza stretched over a mile long and was made in
- 7:29California, USA in 2017. Pizza isn't just delicious, it
- 7:35can also be healthy depending on how it's made.
- 7:38If you choose whole wheat crust, lots of vegetables, and less
- 7:41cheese or fatty meats, pizza can provide important nutrients like
- 7:45protein, fiber, and vitamins. But even if you like your pizza
- 7:49cheesy and gooey, it's a fun food to share with friends and
- 7:52family. Let's do a quick recap of what
- 7:55we learned today. Pizza started as a simple
- 7:57flatbread in ancient times and became the cheesy, saucy treat
- 8:01we know today thanks to the people of Naples, Italy.
- 8:04The basic parts of a pizza are the crust, the sauce, the
- 8:08cheese, and the toppings. Around the world, people have
- 8:12created many different types of pizza, from thin and crispy
- 8:15Neapolitan to thick and hearty Chicago deep dish, and they use
- 8:19all kinds of toppings to suit their tastes.
