Latest / Cardinal Territory: A St. Louis Cardinals Podcast / Cardinals stop skid against White Sox, what's next?
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: This episode was going to go one of two ways.
- 0:09Speaker 1: We were either going to talk about the Saint Louis
- 0:11Speaker 1: Cardinals riding their ship after a very much needed day off,
- 0:15Speaker 1: or we were going to have to have a much
- 0:16Speaker 1: more serious conversation about this ball club. Thankfully, for you
- 0:20Speaker 1: Cardinals fans, it's the first one. Welcome back to Cardinal Territory.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I'm your host, Katie Wu. The Cardinals route the White
- 0:25Speaker 1: Sox twelve to two in the first of three games
- 0:28Speaker 1: in the South Side against the White Sox today. I
- 0:31Speaker 1: am not with the team this series. I will meet
- 0:32Speaker 1: back up with them on Friday at Bushadium. But you
- 0:35Speaker 1: don't mean to tell you don't need me to tell
- 0:37Speaker 1: you how important getting a win today was. Saint Louis
- 0:41Speaker 1: coming into play today had dropped three of four to Milwaukee,
- 0:45Speaker 1: lost seven of their last eight, ten of their last fourteen.
- 0:48Speaker 2: You get the picture.
- 0:49Speaker 1: It was pretty grim June so far, not great for
- 0:52Speaker 1: the Cardinals. In fact, it's been their worst stretch for
- 0:54Speaker 1: the team so far this season, and I thought it
- 0:57Speaker 1: was so so important coming back after he direly needed
- 1:01Speaker 1: off day that pretty much everyone needed, gave the team
- 1:04Speaker 1: an opportunity to reset, regroup, I thought it was so
- 1:07Speaker 1: important that the Cardinals came out well rested and handled
- 1:10Speaker 1: business against the White Sox today, and they did. Lars
- 1:14Speaker 1: Newbar returned to the lineup after a mini hiatus.
- 1:17Speaker 2: We'll get more.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Into new Bar and what's been going on with him
- 1:21Speaker 1: later in the show. He batted seventh today, and we'll
- 1:23Speaker 1: also get to Allie Marmle's lineup configuration later in the show.
- 1:26Speaker 1: But Brendan Donovan looks healthy after a minor scare with
- 1:29Speaker 1: a toast brain. He missed four games but played again
- 1:31Speaker 1: on Sunday. Looks to be all good there. Alec Burlison
- 1:34Speaker 1: is heating up. All good signs. Big homer from Victor
- 1:37Speaker 1: Scott the second today, who had been going through it
- 1:39Speaker 1: offensively lately.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Let's just break down the box.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Score and we'll go and look at what changes Allie
- 1:44Speaker 1: marmal made with his lineup. You'll start with Brendan Donovan
- 1:48Speaker 1: batting lead off today, and you know, I think that
- 1:50Speaker 1: worked out pretty well.
- 1:50Speaker 2: He had a four hit day score two runs that'll
- 1:52Speaker 2: play pubblo by Mason Wynn and his normal number two spot.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yvon Herrera bumped up to the three hole with Donnie
- 1:59Speaker 1: and leadoff, Contra cleanup, Burlason, Aronado, new Bar down to seven,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and then of course PAHs and Scott bringing up the
- 2:06Speaker 1: rear in their usual roles. It's a different lineup than
- 2:09Speaker 1: what we've seen pretty much all year. The results twelve runs,
- 2:11Speaker 1: thirteen hits, multi hit games across the board. We mentioned
- 2:16Speaker 1: Donovan's four hit game that was really exciting to see.
- 2:18Speaker 1: At the top of the lineup, Herrera drove in four runs,
- 2:21Speaker 1: got a home run taken away from him, continues to
- 2:24Speaker 1: swing one of the most exciting bats on the team.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Burlison goes deep. We talked about picture Scott leaving the.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Yard and most notably for new Bar went hitless, zero
- 2:34Speaker 1: for three, but he did walk and no strikeouts, so
- 2:37Speaker 1: baby steps in the right direction for Newt. But honestly,
- 2:41Speaker 1: while the offense was great and this is something that
- 2:43Speaker 1: you're supposed to do against this White Sox team, what
- 2:46Speaker 1: I was super encouraged by overall was Matthew Libertor coming
- 2:49Speaker 1: out and posting a quality start. Here's the line from Libby.
- 2:53Speaker 1: He went six in e ands, five hits, two in runs,
- 2:56Speaker 1: no walks, four strikeouts.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Through eighty six pitches, fifty eight.
- 2:59Speaker 1: For strikes, that to me looks a lot more Libby
- 3:02Speaker 1: like than what we've seen over the last three starts.
- 3:05Speaker 1: This was his first quality start since May twenty fourth
- 3:08Speaker 1: against the Diamondbacks, so that had three straight starts where
- 3:11Speaker 1: his stuff just wasn't there. The below wasn't sustaining. Looked
- 3:15Speaker 1: much better today for Libby. So that is all things
- 3:19Speaker 1: pointing in the right direction for a Cardinals team that
- 3:22Speaker 1: really needed to pick up the win today. Now, I
- 3:25Speaker 1: know what you're thinking. One win against the White Sox
- 3:28Speaker 1: does not mean that the Cardinals woes are fixed to
- 3:30Speaker 1: No means am I suggesting that, But I am saying
- 3:34Speaker 1: when you take into consideration of what the team looked like,
- 3:36Speaker 1: that was a really tough series against the Brewers. We
- 3:38Speaker 1: talked to Nolan Arnaudo on Sunday at an American family Field
- 3:41Speaker 1: and he said, I don't know why, but every time
- 3:43Speaker 1: we come to this ballpark, it's really hard to win here.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And it got me thinking, Yeah, I can't really remember
- 3:49Speaker 1: the last time the Cardinals won a convincing series in Milwaukee. Now,
- 3:53Speaker 1: certainly they've beat Milwaukee before, but that's bet at Bush Stadium.
- 3:57Speaker 1: That happened this year Already, they I don't know what
- 4:00Speaker 1: it is about this team playing an American family field,
- 4:02Speaker 1: but that was a disappointing series loss those division series,
- 4:05Speaker 1: especially when you see how the National League Central is
- 4:08Speaker 1: shaping up. We always make jokes that it's not a
- 4:09Speaker 1: super competitive division. Well jokes hype be on us, because
- 4:12Speaker 1: it's shaping up to be pretty competitive between four teams here.
- 4:16Speaker 1: It was disappointing, and the Cardinals knew that June was
- 4:19Speaker 1: going to be a stretch. This is something that Allie
- 4:21Speaker 1: Marmel had said when May ended, trying to avoid a
- 4:25Speaker 1: June swoon, but the scheduling fate was not on their side.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Cardinals have, as you know, just two off days of
- 4:30Speaker 1: their last one of the month was yesterday, and they
- 4:33Speaker 1: needed it across the board. No one's making excuses, though
- 4:36Speaker 1: no one said after the game, yeah, no excuses. Every
- 4:39Speaker 1: team has to go through a point of their schedule
- 4:41Speaker 1: like this. We have to play better. We have to
- 4:42Speaker 1: beat our division. Opponents couldn't agree more. They weren't able
- 4:45Speaker 1: to do that against the Brewers. I felt like today,
- 4:48Speaker 1: give them the circumstances. You got a lot of guys
- 4:50Speaker 1: that were given days off or time to rest or
- 4:52Speaker 1: coming back from injuries, you get an entire.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Team off day, come in handle a team in the
- 4:57Speaker 2: American League that just really is not performing well.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Well, they're doing better than last year, but low bar
- 5:03Speaker 1: and go out there and get a win. Start this
- 5:05Speaker 1: next stretch because the Cardinals have I think until July
- 5:08Speaker 1: third before their next off day, so important to start
- 5:11Speaker 1: this next stretch off with a win, and they do that.
- 5:14Speaker 1: So again, my beloved Cardinal territory listeners and watchers, I'm
- 5:18Speaker 1: not at all but at any means suggesting the Cardinals
- 5:21Speaker 1: are fixed. I just really want to overstate the importance
- 5:24Speaker 1: of them winning today because if they had just dropped
- 5:27Speaker 1: to the Brewers, you know, got set by Toronto, had
- 5:29Speaker 1: the off day, and dropped to the White Sox, I
- 5:31Speaker 1: think morale be in a dangerously low place.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Instead, we have something to build off. So we'll get.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Into a little bit more about what I'm looking at
- 5:40Speaker 1: as the Cardinals aim to finish June better than they
- 5:43Speaker 1: started quick However, a first message from PCHG.
- 5:48Speaker 3: It is summertime. We are in the thick of golf season.
- 5:51Speaker 3: It's always golf season down in Florida, but we're in
- 5:54Speaker 3: the thick of golf season. Across the country and someone's
- 5:57Speaker 3: looking to get a new club, that logo should say
- 6:01Speaker 3: it all PXG what do they do?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Go get fitted?
- 6:04Speaker 4: Go get fitted by one of their master fitters, professional fitters.
- 6:07Speaker 4: I've done it. It's helped shave many strokes off my handicap.
- 6:11Speaker 4: It is worth it. It's educational. You learn about not
- 6:13Speaker 4: only clubs. You learn about chefs, you learn about grips,
- 6:16Speaker 4: you learn about angles. They have all the numbers, all
- 6:18Speaker 4: the setups that you need to help improve your handicap.
- 6:21Speaker 3: You feel like a VIP when you're there.
- 6:23Speaker 4: One hundred percent. They even help my putting, which needed.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Help there They help your putting there there. That's how
- 6:30Speaker 3: cool it is. So schedule you're fitting today and for
- 6:33Speaker 3: a limited time you could save up to twenty percent
- 6:35Speaker 3: on your entire order. Head over to PXG dot com
- 6:38Speaker 3: slash foul. That's PXG dot com slash foul to save
- 6:41Speaker 3: up to twenty percent on your entire order. P XG
- 6:44Speaker 3: dot com slash foul restrictions apply se site for details.
- 6:51Speaker 1: All right, So, like we talked about Tuesday's lineup with
- 6:54Speaker 1: most of the regulars back, I believe all the regulars
- 6:57Speaker 1: back actually looked much different than the lineup we've been
- 7:00Speaker 1: accustomed to seeing all season long.
- 7:02Speaker 2: We'll start with the leadoff spot.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Obviously, we know that Laras Newbar has been going through
- 7:06Speaker 1: it lately, probably one of the worst slumps of his career.
- 7:10Speaker 1: It got so bad on Friday against the Brewers, a
- 7:13Speaker 1: three to two loss for the Cardinals. Lars went zero
- 7:15Speaker 1: for five with four strikeouts, including the strikeout that ended
- 7:18Speaker 1: the game with runners and scoring position. First credit to Newbar,
- 7:23Speaker 1: who made himself available after the game full uniform. We
- 7:26Speaker 1: come in the clubhouse, He's sitting at his locker and
- 7:29Speaker 1: doesn't shy away from the moment. He owns it.
- 7:32Speaker 2: You know.
- 7:32Speaker 1: He said I wasn't there for it, and I was
- 7:34Speaker 1: doing a different interview, but I did acknowledge that he
- 7:36Speaker 1: did make himself available to reporters.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Told the other reporters that, you know, hey, this is.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Something I'm going through. It's difficult. Obviously he wants to
- 7:43Speaker 1: be doing much better. But I thought it was very
- 7:45Speaker 1: commendable that new Bar, as soon as we came in,
- 7:47Speaker 1: when media opened to the clubhouse, was there ready to
- 7:50Speaker 1: talk about it. Not every single player does that. The
- 7:53Speaker 1: Cardinals have done a really nice job across the board
- 7:55Speaker 1: with that. This is the first time that I can
- 7:57Speaker 1: remember Newbar being in a position where he'd been struggling
- 8:00Speaker 1: this poorly to have to.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Be in that situation, but he did.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And uh, it's always appreciated, I think, from both media
- 8:08Speaker 1: and fans alike when players can be accountable for that.
- 8:11Speaker 1: But back to why we're talking about Lars in the
- 8:12Speaker 1: first place. The slump in June got so bad, I'll
- 8:16Speaker 1: read it here coming into play today, So these stats
- 8:19Speaker 1: do not include today's game. New Bar from June first
- 8:25Speaker 1: was hitting. This is a slash line one fourteen, two
- 8:27Speaker 1: thirty five one fourteen. Yes, that's a one fourteen slugging percentage,
- 8:31Speaker 1: just an ops of three forty nine, no homers, no
- 8:35Speaker 1: runs batted in, a whopping nineteen strikeouts, And to me,
- 8:41Speaker 1: that is the teller that Lars.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Newbar is not going well, because.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Something that makes him so effective as a hitter, especially
- 8:48Speaker 1: a lead off hitter, is his plate discipline. And this
- 8:51Speaker 1: is something I talked with Ali Marmal about as well.
- 8:53Speaker 1: He's searching and you can tell that he's not feeling
- 8:55Speaker 1: right in the box because he's swinging to a lot
- 8:57Speaker 1: of pitches outside of the zone that has never been
- 9:00Speaker 1: the type of hitter that Lars Newpar has been in
- 9:01Speaker 1: the major leagues. It's led to a huge amount of
- 9:03Speaker 1: strikeouts and swing and miss not a lot of contact.
- 9:07Speaker 1: He walked six times in those thirteen games, so the
- 9:10Speaker 1: walk numbers are.
- 9:11Speaker 2: About the same, but the strikeouts were really alarming.
- 9:13Speaker 1: So long winded explanation of saying, after that Friday game,
- 9:18Speaker 1: while there's I think an intent to play these players
- 9:21Speaker 1: through their slumps because this is about the runway and
- 9:23Speaker 1: opportunity year right, it got to the point where playing
- 9:26Speaker 1: new Bar every day was actually going to be detrimental
- 9:29Speaker 1: to his mental health and his progress. So Olie Marvel
- 9:31Speaker 1: took him aside and said, hey, we're going to give
- 9:33Speaker 1: you Saturday off, and we're ideally going to give you
- 9:35Speaker 1: Sunday off, so that you have three days included in
- 9:38Speaker 1: the off day on Monday to get right, mental reset,
- 9:41Speaker 1: get your head in a better spot, and we'll play
- 9:43Speaker 1: you on Tuesday. Now, he did say, we will use
- 9:46Speaker 1: new Bar as a defensive replacement or a pinch runner
- 9:48Speaker 1: if the situation allows. They ended up doing that both
- 9:50Speaker 1: on Saturday and Sunday, but it was so important for
- 9:53Speaker 1: the Cardinals and for new Bar that he did not
- 9:55Speaker 1: take any advance until Tuesday. They hope that this will
- 9:58Speaker 1: help him find his budding back in the batter's box because,
- 10:01Speaker 1: as Ali Marmal has said, for this group to work
- 10:05Speaker 1: for this idea of twenty twenty five to be both
- 10:07Speaker 1: about runway and results, Lars Newfar has to be a
- 10:11Speaker 1: key person in that. They need him to get right
- 10:13Speaker 1: and they need him at the top of the order.
- 10:15Speaker 1: But him being the leadoff man right now is not
- 10:18Speaker 1: helpful for both him or the team.
- 10:20Speaker 2: So need to get him back of the lineup because
- 10:22Speaker 2: he needs to play.
- 10:23Speaker 1: But dropping him down to seven, where he's a little
- 10:25Speaker 1: bit more protected, makes a lot of sense. Who are
- 10:27Speaker 1: you going to step up in that moment, ce Brendan Donovan.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Because of course, of course he is.
- 10:32Speaker 1: He has been the Cardinals' most valuable player this year,
- 10:34Speaker 1: and you look what Brendan Donovan does as a hitter.
- 10:37Speaker 1: The only reason I didn't like him in the leadoff
- 10:39Speaker 1: spot was because I like him so much in the
- 10:41Speaker 1: three hole, and that's coming from someone who did not
- 10:42Speaker 1: like him the three hole when the season started.
- 10:44Speaker 2: So he just goes ahead and shows you what I know.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Thank you for subscribing, But when it came down to
- 10:50Speaker 1: know each player in their strengths, I'm not sure there
- 10:52Speaker 1: was a better option there.
- 10:54Speaker 2: You could maybe argue Mason Winn and I wouldn't.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Disagree, but I saw what the organization, what Ali was
- 10:59Speaker 1: thinking putting Donovan in the leadoff role. I'm not just
- 11:02Speaker 1: saying that because he got four hits today. I think
- 11:04Speaker 1: his overall skill set, his ability to make contact. We
- 11:06Speaker 1: know he hits the ball, we know he gets on base,
- 11:08Speaker 1: we know he doubles a ton. Those are all good
- 11:10Speaker 1: characteristics of a leadoff hitter as well. So that makes sense.
- 11:14Speaker 1: But if you have Donovan out of the three hole
- 11:16Speaker 1: and batting leadoff, well, you need someone with just as
- 11:19Speaker 1: much power and impact in that three hole spot. That
- 11:23Speaker 1: to me was made a lot of sense. I mean
- 11:25Speaker 1: that one was not hard to figure out. Who would
- 11:26Speaker 1: backfill Donnie.
- 11:27Speaker 2: It's Herrera.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Yvon Herrera just continues to be such a professional hitter
- 11:34Speaker 1: for this lineup. He's transformed what this Cardinals offense can
- 11:36Speaker 1: do and in a way has made things a little
- 11:39Speaker 1: bit more complicated for the overall roster construction.
- 11:42Speaker 2: We talked about this up on the Athletic after the
- 11:44Speaker 2: Brewer series. Nolan Gorman, who has.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Done a really nice job, has a nice June, has
- 11:50Speaker 1: one of the highest ops's on the team in June,
- 11:53Speaker 1: he's been relegated back to the bench. I think it's
- 11:55Speaker 1: fair to question why he did not start today against
- 11:57Speaker 1: a righty starter for Chicago.
- 11:59Speaker 2: I two would that if I was there.
- 12:01Speaker 1: But you look at what the Cardinals are trying to accomplish,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and Ali Marmal is trying to accomplish. The plan was
- 12:07Speaker 1: Herreeric to be the everyday catcher, Gorman to DH Donovan
- 12:12Speaker 1: at second to new barn Walker in the corners right.
- 12:15Speaker 2: However, this is no knock on Herrera.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Pedro Pahes has emerged as the far superior defensive catcher
- 12:22Speaker 1: and the pitching staff and overall game planning and overall
- 12:26Speaker 1: defensive alignment that is not measured in the box score
- 12:29Speaker 1: or measurement Baseball Savant or fangrafts, really and however you
- 12:32Speaker 1: want to look at it, but it means so much
- 12:34Speaker 1: to this pitch to contact staff that the Cardinals feel
- 12:38Speaker 1: like they need to play him every day. But at
- 12:39Speaker 1: the same time, they are not taking Herrera's bat out
- 12:41Speaker 1: of this lineup, so he becomes the mostly everyday DH.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Then what do you do with Gorman. You can put
- 12:47Speaker 1: him at second base, but Donovan is the superior second
- 12:50Speaker 1: basement defensively, and you lose a lot of defensive value
- 12:55Speaker 1: at second base if you put Gorman there and you
- 12:57Speaker 1: put Donovant in the corners, you also lose defensive value
- 13:01Speaker 1: in the corner outfield spots if you have Donovan.
- 13:03Speaker 2: There over someone like new Bar.
- 13:05Speaker 1: It's kind of a wash with Donovan and Walker. I
- 13:07Speaker 1: don't have the exact stats in front of me, but
- 13:08Speaker 1: the eye test will tell me it's about the same.
- 13:11Speaker 1: But the overall best defensive outlook for this club as
- 13:14Speaker 1: Pedro Pa has behind the plate, Brendan Donovan at second
- 13:17Speaker 1: Lars Dubar had left von Herrera as the DH. Nolan
- 13:20Speaker 1: Gorman then gets left to the bench. Now don't love
- 13:24Speaker 1: that for Gorman, of course, because I do think he
- 13:26Speaker 1: is part of the you know, was named part of
- 13:28Speaker 1: this transition season.
- 13:29Speaker 2: It was him and Walker the defining names here.
- 13:31Speaker 1: But when you look at how the bench is currently constructed,
- 13:34Speaker 1: stay with me. The Cardinals don't have an impact bat
- 13:37Speaker 1: off the bench outside of Gorman right now. Everyone else
- 13:40Speaker 1: on the bench or they're pretty much role players. That's
- 13:43Speaker 1: what happens when the Cardinals carry essentially three catchers, and
- 13:46Speaker 1: you know Poso is the best right handed bat off
- 13:49Speaker 1: the bench there, but Barrero his entire role is to
- 13:53Speaker 1: offer protection for the middle end field, specifically Mason Win
- 13:56Speaker 1: and go out and pinch run if needed. So you
- 13:59Speaker 1: don't really have a lot of depth in your bench
- 14:01Speaker 1: as currently constructed until you bring Gorman there, Walker off
- 14:05Speaker 1: the bench.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Sometimes you can have Burleson off the bench.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Sometimes just having an impact bat off the bench will
- 14:10Speaker 1: make this lineup a lot more dynamic. They didn't have
- 14:13Speaker 1: that because New bar had that two day hiatus, because
- 14:17Speaker 1: Donovan was dealing with stuff. He missed three of the
- 14:18Speaker 1: four games against Milwaukee, because Jordan Walker missed two of
- 14:21Speaker 1: the four games against Milwaukee, their bench was really thin.
- 14:24Speaker 1: So for all of the clamor on why Nolan Gorman
- 14:27Speaker 1: was not in the lineup today and I don't know
- 14:29Speaker 1: what the exact playing time role will be for him
- 14:31Speaker 1: going forward, I get it, it's valid, but you think
- 14:35Speaker 1: about what would it happen, the impact it would have
- 14:37Speaker 1: in late inning games to have someone like Gorman's bat
- 14:40Speaker 1: off the bench.
- 14:42Speaker 2: I like it.
- 14:42Speaker 1: I understand it again, It's not perfect. Nothing about this
- 14:45Speaker 1: roster was ever supposed to be perfect. We knew that
- 14:47Speaker 1: on opening day, but today it worked out. I'll be
- 14:50Speaker 1: interested to see how this continues to go forward. I
- 14:53Speaker 1: don't expect Lars Newbar to bat seventh forever, but I
- 14:56Speaker 1: imagine some version of this lineup going forward in the
- 14:59Speaker 1: near future as the Cardinals works to get a new bar.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Right of sure, seems like they have a pretty viable
- 15:05Speaker 1: replacement right now.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I really like what we're seeing with Donovan, Wynn and
- 15:08Speaker 2: Herrera at the top of the order.
- 15:11Speaker 1: All right, we'll spin it forward to what we're looking
- 15:13Speaker 1: at next. First, though, one more message from our dear
- 15:16Speaker 1: palas of cargurws.
- 15:18Speaker 3: It might be that time. If you're looking for a
- 15:20Speaker 3: new car, there's one place to go that is going
- 15:23Speaker 3: to take care of you, and it's car Gurus.

- 16:19Speaker 1: All right, all right, all right. So the Cardinals did
- 16:21Speaker 1: what they were supposed to do. They got a much
- 16:23Speaker 1: needed win to open the set against the White Sox.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Now what's next, It's a very fair question. They need
- 16:28Speaker 2: to keep it up.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Obviously, taking a series from the White Sox, it has
- 16:33Speaker 1: to happen. I'm not over here asking for a sweep
- 16:34Speaker 1: sweeps so hard, but taking two of free from this team,
- 16:37Speaker 1: it's a must. Cardinals have their race in sunny gray pitching.
- 16:40Speaker 1: On Wednesday, Eric Funny makes his return to the White
- 16:43Speaker 1: Sox that's being traded almost a year ago to close
- 16:46Speaker 1: out the series on Thursday, you hope that at least
- 16:49Speaker 1: one of your top two pitchers can go ahead and
- 16:52Speaker 1: shut down this White Sox offense. And to be fair
- 16:55Speaker 1: of the Chicago team that has not really had a
- 16:57Speaker 1: lot of problem with their pitching, it's been the other
- 16:59Speaker 1: side of the ball, the offensive production that has really
- 17:01Speaker 1: plagued them.
- 17:02Speaker 2: So you feel confident.
- 17:04Speaker 1: About at least one of Sunny Gray and or Eric
- 17:07Speaker 1: Fetti posting against this White Sox team and putting the
- 17:10Speaker 1: Cardinals in a position to take home a series win.
- 17:13Speaker 2: They really need it, because when the Cardinals come.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Back to Bush Stadium on Friday, first very important Cole
- 17:18Speaker 1: Swindell concert. That's what I'm looking at postgame concerts either.
- 17:22Speaker 1: But on a real note, three games against the Reds
- 17:25Speaker 1: and then four at home against the first place Cubs
- 17:30Speaker 1: this homestand I don't really think it's out of the
- 17:32Speaker 1: question or dramatic to say that this upcoming homestand can
- 17:37Speaker 1: really start to cement the immediate future of this club
- 17:40Speaker 1: as we shift to July and as we shift to
- 17:42Speaker 1: the two scariest words of the summer trade deadline. And
- 17:46Speaker 1: I've been getting a lot of questions about what are
- 17:47Speaker 1: the Cardinals going to do with the trade deadline. Are
- 17:49Speaker 1: they buyers, are they sellers? Are they holders? What about
- 17:51Speaker 1: the future? Are they going to go for it? Who's
- 17:53Speaker 1: in charge? So much remains unknown because it's going to
- 17:57Speaker 1: depend on what this team does in the next two
- 18:00Speaker 1: three weeks leading into.
- 18:01Speaker 2: The All Star Break.
- 18:02Speaker 1: But this stretch right here, seven consecutive games against division opponents,
- 18:07Speaker 1: will say so much about this Cardinals club. Let's pull
- 18:09Speaker 1: up these standings in the NL Central recordings at around
- 18:13Speaker 1: ten PM on Tuesday night, I think all of the
- 18:15Speaker 1: games are done. Yeah, they're for the Cubs running away
- 18:18Speaker 1: with it. They're forty five and twenty eight. They have
- 18:20Speaker 1: a six and a half game lead over the Brewers,
- 18:22Speaker 1: so they're in second place, and the Cardinals and the
- 18:24Speaker 1: Red thirty eight and thirty five, seven games back.
- 18:27Speaker 2: In that division. You let this division spiral.
- 18:30Speaker 1: If you're the Cardinals, you let this this gap between
- 18:33Speaker 1: them and the Cubs get to double digits at the
- 18:37Speaker 1: end of June.
- 18:38Speaker 2: That is I think.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I don't think that can happen if you are looking
- 18:41Speaker 1: to be buyers at the deadline. There's also another thing
- 18:44Speaker 1: to weigh, as you know, is the organization going to
- 18:46Speaker 1: consider playoff contention overall. At the Cardinals are still in
- 18:49Speaker 1: it for the wildcard spot come the trade deadline, would
- 18:52Speaker 1: they go for it? Or is this just strictly divisional matchup?
- 18:55Speaker 1: Let's check the wildcard standings because that's fun to do
- 18:57Speaker 1: in June. Really means something right now, Wow, the Cardinals
- 19:00Speaker 1: would be two games out of a wild card spot.
- 19:02Speaker 1: There'd be Phillies, the Giants who did some crazy things
- 19:07Speaker 1: over the weekend trading for Raphile Devers Bester Posey went
- 19:10Speaker 1: crazy for that, and the Padres would get the last spot.
- 19:13Speaker 1: It'd be the Brewers, Reds and the Cardinals, O go
- 19:15Speaker 1: figure fighting to get in there, all separated by half
- 19:19Speaker 1: of a game. So clearly this division is already shaping
- 19:22Speaker 1: up to be super important. And you know what, it's
- 19:25Speaker 1: about time that we had a competitive NL Central where really,
- 19:29Speaker 1: I mean, I think the Cubs. I don't want to
- 19:30Speaker 1: go out and say they're running away with it on
- 19:32Speaker 1: June seventeenth, because we still have over half of the
- 19:35Speaker 1: season to play. But when you're looking at where the
- 19:37Speaker 1: Brewers and the Cardinals and the Reds all stand up
- 19:39Speaker 1: next to each other, I think they're really close.
- 19:41Speaker 2: And that's going to be intriguing to watch.
- 19:44Speaker 1: So this next homestand first things first, get through the
- 19:48Speaker 1: White Sox series, get a series win, get everyone feeling
- 19:50Speaker 1: a little bit better about the situation. Then when you
- 19:52Speaker 1: come home, handle business against the Reds and handle business
- 19:55Speaker 1: against the Cubs.
- 19:56Speaker 2: See where you stack up at the end of the
- 19:58Speaker 2: month after that homesta. And because then you.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Have another ten game trip on the road. Oh it's
- 20:04Speaker 1: not just seven games, it's ten. Yeah, ten games in
- 20:07Speaker 1: the next two weeks against division opponents. Because the Cardinals
- 20:10Speaker 1: go three in Cleveland, three in Pittsburgh, and then three
- 20:14Speaker 1: right back in Chicago Rigley Field from fourth of July weekend,
- 20:16Speaker 1: So that will be insane. Yeah, a lot can happen
- 20:20Speaker 1: in the next two weeks. And I don't want to be,
- 20:22Speaker 1: you know, the bearer of dramatic news, even though I
- 20:24Speaker 1: love drama. But we have just a limited amount of time,
- 20:28Speaker 1: less than a month before the All Star break, and
- 20:30Speaker 1: so many division games in between those timelines. We could
- 20:34Speaker 1: be having two entirely separate conversations about the trade deadline.
- 20:37Speaker 1: With this team, it all depends on how they perform.
- 20:41Speaker 2: So that's what.
- 20:42Speaker 1: I'm looking at over the next two weeks or so
- 20:45Speaker 1: Bernie and I. We've had some weird scheduling things going on,
- 20:47Speaker 1: but he and I will be back to preview not preview,
- 20:50Speaker 1: recap the White Sox series on Thursday, and we'll get
- 20:53Speaker 1: a series recap about the Reds as well. I am
- 20:56Speaker 1: going to kick back, relax and listen to Chip Carry
- 20:59Speaker 1: and Brad Tom on the next two days from home,
- 21:01Speaker 1: and hopefully when the Cardinals come back to Bush Stadium
- 21:04Speaker 1: they're in a much better spot than when they left
- 21:06Speaker 1: American Family Field, because that was grim.
- 21:09Speaker 2: All right, Cardinal.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Territory fans, be back with you later in the week.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Thanks as always for watching Talk Soon
