- 0:00How amazingly blessed we are to have God's commandments.
- 0:05Living by one's own truth leads to chaos.
- 0:09Truth is absolute and leads to order and stability.
- 0:14Some people prefer to drift. You can't drift into the
- 0:18presence of God. One evening I lay on my bed in
- 0:23hopes of getting some relief from pain in my back.
- 0:26I drifted into another dimension and a wave of and profound
- 0:31regret washed over me. It was a million times more than
- 0:36the Blues. This was profound, paralyzing,
- 0:41unrelenting sorrow. It was hail.
- 0:46That conception of hail lies in 2 words too late.
- 1:06Hello again, my name is Larry Corbridge and this is episode 6
- 1:12of the Stand Forever series. In the last episode, we
- 1:17considered God's greatest gifts, His Son, His Spirit and His
- 1:23life, without which chaos, darkness and death prevail.
- 1:29The next three episodes are about those awful conditions and
- 1:34as a result, they are a bit gloomy.
- 1:40But, but take heart, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
- 1:45Beginning in episode 9, Speaking of Adam and Eve, Lehigh taught
- 1:50that they could not know joy without also knowing misery.
- 1:54And similarly, we can't appreciate light without passing
- 1:59through darkness along the way as well.
- 2:02Without God and his Son, without his spirit and life, chaos,
- 2:07darkness, and death prevail. Without intervention, all things
- 2:13trend toward disorder and chaos. Chaos is a state of confusion
- 2:19and disorder without meaning, purpose, or direction.
- 2:23The natural state of all things trends towards chaos.
- 2:27That process of degradation is broadly defined as entropy.
- 2:34Without the intervention of focused energy to counteract
- 2:38entropy, all things are continually breaking down,
- 2:42trending toward disorder. A man remembered that when his
- 2:48parents membership in the church was withdrawn, they're followed
- 2:52in his words, a complete absence of the spirit in the home, and
- 2:58the violence and abuse reached higher proportions and increased
- 3:03in frequency, making life hell. The absence of God and his
- 3:09spirit leads to chaos. God not only offsets entropy,
- 3:15but also creates order out of chaos.
- 3:18And of course, the best example of divine energy counteracting
- 3:23entropy and creating order out of chaos is the creation of the
- 3:29heavens and the earth. And then the Lord said, Let us
- 3:34go down. And they went down at the
- 3:36beginning. And they, that is, the gods,
- 3:39organized and formed the heavens, and the earth
- 3:43organized. And the gods organized the
- 3:48lights and the expanse of the heaven, and caused them to
- 3:51divide the day from the night, and organized them to be for
- 3:56signs and seasons, and for days and for years.
- 4:00And the gods organized them to be for lights and the expanse of
- 4:05the heaven to give light upon the earth.
- 4:08And the gods organize the 2 great lights, the greater light
- 4:12to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night.
- 4:15So the gods went down to organize man in their own image
- 4:21and the image of the gods to form they him male and female to
- 4:26form they them. Another example of divine order
- 4:33over chaos is the resurrection restoring all things to their
- 4:38proper order. Almatot, I say unto thee, my
- 4:43son, that the plan of restoration is requisite with
- 4:47the justice of God, for it is requisite that all things should
- 4:52be restored to their proper order.
- 4:57Behold, it is It is requisite and just, according to the power
- 5:01and resurrection of Christ, that the soul of man should be
- 5:05restored to its body, and that every part of the body should be
- 5:09restored to itself. End Quote.
- 5:12While God is the Creator, Satan is the destroyer.
- 5:18Without intervention, entropy and chaos prevails spiritually
- 5:24and individually as well as physically and universally.
- 5:30As surely as a truck parked in the field will eventually rushed
- 5:34and turned to dust, We also trend towards spiritual decay
- 5:39and disorder without God's intervention.
- 5:43Chaos, darkness and death are all consequences of not keeping
- 5:48God's commandments. The Lord has said Behold mine
- 5:53house is a House of order. Say it the Lord God, and not a
- 5:57House of confusion. How amazingly blessed we are to
- 6:05have God's commandments. What safety and protection and
- 6:11order come from keeping them? Pick pick any commandment and
- 6:17consider the consequences of not keeping it.
- 6:20For example, disregard for thou shalt not kill, or thou shalt
- 6:25not commit adultery, or thou shalt not steal, or thou shall
- 6:28not bear false witness. All lead to chaos, darkness, and
- 6:34death. As for, for example, thou shalt
- 6:39not bear false witness. After nearly 30 years of
- 6:43practicing law, I asked myself, what have I seen, what have I
- 6:49observed over that period of time?
- 6:53And the most prominent trend was a much greater propensity among
- 6:59people generally to not tell the truth, to lie, and to do so even
- 7:06underoath. The result is chaos in commerce,
- 7:12in the judicial system, and in life in general.
- 7:16If you can't rely on what someone says, chaos is the
- 7:19consequence. Think of pornography or the Word
- 7:25of Wisdom, and the consequence of addictions resulting in
- 7:29broken lives and broken families, chaos, darkness and
- 7:34death. Think of the law of chastity.
- 7:39It is amazing to me that God has granted to us in this life his
- 7:45children, immortality, the power of procreation.
- 7:52I mean, it makes sense, but it's such an incredible power, the
- 7:56power to create life. What could be?
- 8:00What greater trust could be given?
- 8:02I wonder. I wonder what what is greater,
- 8:06the power to create worlds or the power to create life?
- 8:14Worlds are just orbs in space without life.
- 8:17Life is what gives everything meaning.
- 8:22So what would be the consequence if all of God's children without
- 8:27number had the power to create, to procreate rather, with
- 8:34whomever, wherever, throughout all eternity?
- 8:38What would be the consequence of that?
- 8:41Obviously chaos. Chaos would be the consequence.
- 8:47Total, absolute chaos. Would it make sense for God to
- 8:52endow us with that godly power throughout all of eternity if we
- 8:59do not learn to use it appropriately here and now?
- 9:06God's house is organized by families.
- 9:10We are given these very few years of mortality to learn to
- 9:16use this sacred power appropriately, that we might
- 9:20retain the same power throughout eternity.
- 9:27God's house is a House of orders, I've said many times,
- 9:31and disregard for the rules of the house leads to chaos.
- 9:36Truth is absolute and leads to order and stability while living
- 9:44by one's own truth. Marching to the beat of 1's own
- 9:49drum, doing 1's own thing leads to chaos.
- 9:53It is one of the primary reasons for the restoration.
- 9:59Speaking of the conditions of the world at the time of the
- 10:02restoration, the Lord said these words.
- 10:06They will not hear the voice of the Lord, he said, neither the
- 10:10voice of His servants, for they have strayed from mine
- 10:15ordinances and have broken mine everlasting covenant.
- 10:19They seek not the Lord to establish His righteousness, but
- 10:23every man listen to this. Every man walketh in his own
- 10:29way, and after the image of his own God, whose image is in the
- 10:36likeness of the world, and whose substance is that of an idol
- 10:40which waxeth old, and shall perish in Babylon, even Babylon
- 10:46the great, which shall fall. Wherefore I, the Lord, knowing
- 10:53the calamity which should come upon the inhabitants of the
- 10:57earth, called upon My servant Joseph Smith junior, and spake
- 11:02unto him from heaven, and gave him what commandments?
- 11:09And if that if that were not enough, the Lord has promised to
- 11:15give us more commandments as we obey those we now have, saying,
- 11:23Yeah, blessed are they whose feet stand upon the land of
- 11:26Zion, who have obeyed my gospel. For they shall receive for their
- 11:31reward the good things of the earth, and it shall bring forth
- 11:35in its strength, and they shall also be crowned with blessings
- 11:39from above. Yeah, and with commandments, not
- 11:45a few. And with revelations in their
- 11:48time, they that are faithful and diligent before me.
- 11:55Lack of purpose leads to chaos as well.
- 12:00Without God, life has no meaning other than what we may conjure
- 12:05up on our own. And without purpose we wander.
- 12:09We can't go where we don't know to go.
- 12:13What is life's purposes? One of the great questions of
- 12:18the ages. Without a destination, people
- 12:23can't chart a course. They are buffeted by the blows
- 12:26and circumstances of life, randomly knocking one in One
- 12:31Direction and then another. They drift with the winds, as
- 12:35Paul said, toss to and fro, carried about by every wind of
- 12:41doctrine and the sleight of men and cunning craftiness.
- 12:46The winds don't blow and the currents don't flow toward home.
- 12:52You can't drift into the presence of God.
- 12:57Some people prefer to drift. Just go with the flow and less
- 13:03will be expected. The fewer the expectations, the
- 13:07fewer the disappointments. They prefer to keep things vague
- 13:12and foggy so they are never off course.
- 13:14You can't be off course if you never set 1.
- 13:17You can't miss if you don't aim free and easy.
- 13:21They avoid the disappointment of failure until they have failed
- 13:24so badly there is no way to ignore it.
- 13:30Other people drift without knowing it.
- 13:32They think they have a destination toward which they
- 13:35are sailing. They believe that they have
- 13:38charted the course of their life.
- 13:40They can tell you what it is if you ask, but it is usually
- 13:43something formulated in the moment.
- 13:48It may be a star in their sky, sure enough, but it is not
- 13:51really their North Star. They are vaguely aware it is
- 13:56there. They can point it out if you
- 13:58ask, but they don't really take their bearings from it, at least
- 14:01not often. Their course is not fixed on it.
- 14:07They think it is, but it isn't. They drift without knowing it
- 14:13unless checked against the North Star, the winds blow and the
- 14:16currents flow toward the shores of desolation, waste and chaos.
- 14:23One evening I lay on my bed in hopes of getting some relief
- 14:27from pain in my back. My wife Jackie was close by in
- 14:33an adjoining room. As I rested, I drifted into
- 14:38another dimension and a wave of profound regret washed over me.
- 14:46Although I was fully awake, my state of mind was really more
- 14:50dreamlike. I was aware of other people
- 14:54overcome by extreme overwhelming sadness and regret, and I felt
- 15:01what they were feeling. The despair was so overwhelming
- 15:08I unconsciously began to moan and hoping to find relief from
- 15:12something far greater than the pain in my back.
- 15:15I stood for a moment and then dropped my knees, unable to
- 15:20stand. Jackie then rushed into the room
- 15:24to find me on my knees with my head in my hands, trying to
- 15:28understand what was happening. She, of course, was alarmed, but
- 15:33I could not explain to her what was going on because I didn't
- 15:36really understand it. Words can never adequately
- 15:41describe the depths of this despair.
- 15:44This was not mere despondency. It was a million times more than
- 15:51the Blues. This was profound, irreparable,
- 15:56paralyzing, debilitating, unrelenting sorrow.
- 16:02It was hail, but not hail of the wicked, rather the hail of
- 16:08regret. This was the desolation of
- 16:13waste, wasted talents, wasted time, wasted opportunities that
- 16:21had come and gone, never again to return.
- 16:27It was the clear realization of what could have been, but what
- 16:31will never be, because the time to act had passed forever more.
- 16:38Jacob wrote, famously wrote really.
- 16:42But woe unto him that has the law given, yeah, that has all
- 16:47the commandments of God like unto us, and that transgresseth
- 16:51them. And that wasted the days of his
- 16:54probation. For awful is his state.
- 16:59For some reason I know something about the awfulness of that
- 17:03state. I know what woe feels like.
- 17:09I'm not sure why, but I know about the hell of waste and
- 17:15regret. An Italian composer, Kim Carlo
- 17:21Minotti, said this hail begins on the day when God grants us a
- 17:26clear vision of all that we might have achieved, of all the
- 17:31gifts we might have wasted, of all that we might have done
- 17:36which we did not do. For me that conception of hail
- 17:41lies in 2 words. He said too late.
- 17:48The Lord has said, for behold, this life is the time for men to
- 17:55prepare to meet God. Yeah, behold, the day of this
- 17:59life is the day for man to perform their laborers.
- 18:04And now, as I said unto you before, as I have had so many
- 18:07witnesses, therefore I beseech of you that you do not
- 18:11procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end.
- 18:15For after this day of life, which is given for us to prepare
- 18:19for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in
- 18:24this life, then cometh the night of darkness, wherein there can
- 18:29be no labor performed. Then continuing on, he says, You
- 18:34cannot say when you are brought to that awful crisis, that I
- 18:38will repent, that I will return to my God.
- 18:42Nay, you cannot say this. For that same spirit which doth
- 18:47possess your bodies at the time that you do go out of this life,
- 18:52that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that
- 18:57eternal world. For behold, if you have
- 19:01procrastinated the day of your repentance, even until death,
- 19:06behold, you have become subjected to the spirit of the
- 19:09devil, and he doth seal you his chilling words.
- 19:16Therefore the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and
- 19:21hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you.
- 19:26And this is the final state of the wicked.
- 19:30End Quote. A few months later, I spoke with
- 19:34a mission president about 3 disobedient missionaries.
- 19:38He recently had learned about their most recent escapades and
- 19:42was wondering if he should send them home with a dishonorable
- 19:47release. One had already gone home,
- 19:50having completed the term of his mission, and the other two had
- 19:53only three weeks remaining. I referenced the foregoing
- 19:59scripture with him and observed that the time for them to repent
- 20:03and perform their laborers insofar as their mission was
- 20:07concerned, the time to prove their faithfulness and qualify
- 20:12for the supreme blessings of heaven as missionaries had sadly
- 20:17passed. And at least in that sense,
- 20:21awful was their state, regardless of what decision was
- 20:24made. Relative to how and when they
- 20:27return home, time had passed them by.
- 20:33I also recalled talking to missionaries on one occasion
- 20:38about the opportunities of their mission and how their
- 20:42performance as missionaries would largely determine their
- 20:46performance in all aspects of life after their missions.
- 20:51As we broke for lunch, 2 missionaries in different parts
- 20:55of the Chapel remained seemingly transfixed in their seats after
- 21:00everyone else had left. They sat alone in different
- 21:04parts of the empty Chapel. Both had the same catatonic
- 21:10stare. They both were at the end of
- 21:13their missions and both had been somewhat marginal in their
- 21:17commitment and performance as missionaries.
- 21:21Neither had really given the full measure of devotion.
- 21:25I knew why they remained glued to their seats and I knew what
- 21:29they were thinking. I mourn for them, but there was
- 21:33little I could do because to some extent they had wasted the
- 21:38wasted the days of their mission.
- 21:42Awful was their state, and there was nothing I could do to change
- 21:47it. Trying to go in too many
- 21:53directions is almost as bad a strategy as drifting.
- 22:00In a BYU devotional address, Tyler J Jarvis, professor of
- 22:05mathematics at BYU, described the astounding mathematical
- 22:11difficulty of plotting the best route among multiple
- 22:15destinations, which is especially important for
- 22:19delivery companies like UPS. With 10s of thousands of trucks
- 22:25on the road every day, 10s of millions of dollars would be
- 22:30saved annually if each driver could shave just one mile off
- 22:35the daily route. The problem is how to find the
- 22:39best route with multiple destinations.
- 22:44With three destinations, there are 6 possible routes.
- 22:48With four destinations, there are 24 possible rounds.
- 22:53With five stops, 120 routes, 10 stops, 3,268,000 routes.
- 23:03If there are 20 stops, there are, and I'm not sure I can even
- 23:07say this, 2 quintillion, 432 quadrillion, 902 trillion,
- 23:198,176,640,000 routes for 20 stops.
- 23:30If a computer could check a billion routes per second, it
- 23:34would still take 27 years to check all possible routes for 20
- 23:40destinations. An average UPS driver makes 120
- 23:46deliveries a day for 120 destinations.
- 23:51There are so many possible routes, they cannot be stored in
- 23:56all of the memory of any computer in existence.
- 24:01If we had a computer with as many processors as particles in
- 24:05the universe, and if it could check a trillion routes per
- 24:08second, it would still take more than the age of the universe to
- 24:12calculate. This dilemma has been dubbed the
- 24:17Traveling Salesman Problem, and $1,000,000 prize has been
- 24:22offered for anyone who can find an algorithm that solves this
- 24:26problem in a reasonable amount of time.
- 24:30We may solve the Traveling Salesman problem later in
- 24:34episode 10 if I remember to come back to this and see if we can
- 24:39claim the $1,000,000 prize. The reason for all of this is to
- 24:45simply say that many people are also trying to determine the
- 24:49best course to multiple destinations such as being a
- 24:55good spouse, a parent, a family member, career success, church
- 25:00service, development of talents, recreation, financial security,
- 25:04education, community service, personal development, physical
- 25:09fitness and health, personal time and more.
- 25:12Each one of those 13 destinations or objectives that
- 25:17I just mentioned subdivides into a dozen more, for a total of 156
- 25:23destinations. That's more than the UP the UPS
- 25:28driver. How best to do all of that is a
- 25:33much greater problem than the dilemma facing delivery
- 25:36companies. Imposing order to something
- 25:40inherently chaotic is is a hard knot to untie.
- 25:46Some people drift, while others try to go in too many
- 25:50directions. While some are content with
- 25:53doing little, others are trying to do too much, racing all over
- 25:57the map, trying to go everywhere but aiming nowhere.
- 26:01Either strategy is flawed, they all or both rather lead to
- 26:05chaos. Information overload also leads
- 26:10to chaos. Too much information.
- 26:12It's like trying to go in too many different directions.
- 26:15Their struggle to stay afloat, if not swim in the daily tsunami
- 26:20of information, misinformation and disinformation is a life and
- 26:24death struggle. More than ever before, we are
- 26:28flooded with messages that are good or bad, true or false, and
- 26:31much in between. Most people are plugged into
- 26:35messaging in one form or another.
- 26:37Most of the time, if there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of
- 26:42good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.
- 26:46If we are smart because we become what we can, we consume.
- 26:53But even in the category of virtuous, lovely, or of good
- 26:57report or praiseworthy, there is much more than what we can begin
- 27:00to swallow, much less assimilate.
- 27:04Whether we drown in good Clearwater or brackish dark
- 27:07water, either way we drown. We live in the dispensation of
- 27:12the fullness of times and it is really full.
- 27:17There is so much available to us that is good and uplifting, but
- 27:21overall it is more than we can assimilate.
- 27:25So much so that even if we had our own personal security system
- 27:29that only permitted the truth and the good to filter through,
- 27:33we would still be overwhelmed and at be at risk of drowning
- 27:37and good, even good things because there is so much.
- 27:42One good thing dilutes another which diluted and obscured the
- 27:46one before. And then another comes along
- 27:48pushing to the back everything else and on and on until nothing
- 27:52makes a difference. We can be awash and even drown
- 27:56in good things. We are bombarded by so much that
- 28:01the whole of it is chaos. Whether the messaging is good or
- 28:06bad, overall it is chaos, and chaos is never good.
- 28:11God's house is a House of order, but how does one order a
- 28:18tsunami? How does 1 sift through it all?
- 28:22Not not only separate good from bad and true from error, but
- 28:26recognize and clutch to the few most important things among all
- 28:31the good things. Only God can tell us who we are,
- 28:36show us who we can become and how to do it.
- 28:41Only He can reveal what is most important.
- 28:45Only He can offset spiritual decay, disorder and chaos and
- 28:49also edify, build up and organize man in His image
- 28:55spiritually, mentally, emotionally as well as
- 29:00physically. Only He can give us the strength
- 29:04to bear up the burdens of life. Only He can bless us.
- 29:09Without God, chaos prevails.
