- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Coming up on NHL Unscripted.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It's in in Thephile in sixty Golden Globes recap. A
- 0:26Speaker 1: great knight for Pta and shot A May teach me
- 0:29Speaker 1: how to Dougie Rumors swirling around Dougie Hamilton, Bill Zeno, Panthers,
- 0:33Speaker 1: Jimill join us. A great story about Reggie Jackson, this
- 0:36Speaker 1: time as the bat boy of the nineteen eighty two
- 0:39Speaker 1: Milwaukee Brewmers and the toronom May Beliefs are rolling.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I'm back from Montreal hometown. JD and Tal.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Great knight for the Habs as they win six to three.
- 0:48Speaker 1: The big news, though Ze Bulliam being scratched out of
- 0:51Speaker 1: foot did not tell us that the boarding escape like
- 0:53Speaker 1: what we're gonna really sell? Zee bullyam in this one
- 0:55Speaker 1: now not playing tonight. Cannocks hung in there though, three
- 0:58Speaker 1: all after forty all to though Vancouver or JD now
- 1:00Speaker 1: one eight and two in their last eleven they have
- 1:03Speaker 1: the worst record in hawk squarely in the leaf the
- 1:05Speaker 1: top pick in the draft, which would likely mean adding
- 1:08Speaker 1: Gavin McKenna or Evar Stenberg.
- 1:10Speaker 2: What do you think of this? Canucks team the rest
- 1:12Speaker 2: of the way just tank for McKenna.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I think there's no there's no chance here and
- 1:17Speaker 3: I mean they don't look good at all. I think
- 1:19Speaker 3: you want to keep that your demko as healthy as possible.
- 1:22Speaker 4: And I mean, listen z bullyam.
- 1:24Speaker 3: It comes with the growing pains of you know, becoming
- 1:27Speaker 3: an NHL player defenseman, It's it's very it's a lot
- 1:30Speaker 3: more fickle when you're trying to, you know, teach the
- 1:34Speaker 3: young kids how to play the right way. And Adam Foot,
- 1:37Speaker 3: who certainly played the right way for a long time
- 1:39Speaker 3: in his career, I think there's no problems with telling
- 1:41Speaker 3: him if you see if he's seeing his game slip
- 1:44Speaker 3: a little bit. But yeah, I mean it's going to
- 1:46Speaker 3: be more a question of what is their needs in
- 1:49Speaker 3: the draft because you got you know, Verhoff, you got McKenna,
- 1:52Speaker 3: and you got Stenberg, who when I watched the World
- 1:54Speaker 3: World Juniors, great, I thought Stenberg was the best player
- 1:58Speaker 3: of those three. Now, I mean, I don't know if
- 2:01Speaker 3: Canada just didn't compete the way they should have. I
- 2:04Speaker 3: knew McKenna is a facilitator and can you know, do
- 2:07Speaker 3: amazing things and he's still kind of the overall number
- 2:10Speaker 3: one pick no matter what happens. But you know, I
- 2:13Speaker 3: never know. There could be kind of a weird shocking
- 2:18Speaker 3: pick this year. I think for the number one, I
- 2:21Speaker 3: think we'll see what Vancouver does. But it's more of
- 2:23Speaker 3: a I mean, tell me if I'm wrong. Have you've
- 2:26Speaker 3: seen a team that is kind of in the past
- 2:29Speaker 3: three years just gone from great to dog shit just quickly,
- 2:35Speaker 3: like you know, And I think it all started with Listen,
- 2:38Speaker 3: I'm I'm a fan of JT.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Miller, but when they picked JT.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Miller over Bowl Horvat, I think that's where all the
- 2:44Speaker 3: things started to kind of fall apart for them a
- 2:46Speaker 3: little bit. You know, Bohoveat leaves, then after that JT.
- 2:50Speaker 3: After that JT. Miller leaves, and then it's like it's
- 2:53Speaker 3: just one after the other and all you're left with
- 2:55Speaker 3: this EP forty Elias Petterson is your.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Eleven and a half million dollars one of the worst
- 2:59Speaker 1: contracts in hockey.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Well you said it, not me. So when he comes
- 3:03Speaker 4: for us, we have him on the show and he's
- 3:05Speaker 4: he's not going.
- 3:06Speaker 2: To come on the show.
- 3:06Speaker 1: If you I've seen our guest list, We're not gonna
- 3:08Speaker 1: getting least Betterson on the show.
- 3:11Speaker 4: We can't get video let alone.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Guess yeah, I think no, but I think it's yeah there,
- 3:18Speaker 3: it's not going to be good for them. I just
- 3:19Speaker 3: saw Jake Debrosk be like, I haven't lost as many
- 3:21Speaker 3: games in my life.
- 3:22Speaker 4: It's like, we'll get used to a buddy. There's more coming.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yeah, not good times right now for Jake.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Meantime, Everson out, Bonus in we're not talking about David Borrianis.
- 3:32Speaker 2: We are talking about Bones. Though.
- 3:34Speaker 1: The Columbus Blue Jackets fifth head coach in thirty months,
- 3:38Speaker 1: got the news coming down right before the has Can
- 3:40Speaker 1: Jody Shelley breaking the news Dean Everson gone along with
- 3:42Speaker 1: his assistant Steve McCarthy and Rick Bonus, who retired as
- 3:45Speaker 1: head coach the Jets in twenty twenty four.
- 3:47Speaker 2: It's tough to believe. John Forston told me it's his
- 3:50Speaker 2: sixth decade of coach. Again said there's no way how
- 3:52Speaker 2: old is this guy.
- 3:53Speaker 1: But at the time of the change, Columbus said the
- 3:54Speaker 1: worst record in the East. They win Bones' debut to
- 3:57Speaker 1: jump ahead of the Rangers. They've managed to within striking
- 4:00Speaker 1: distance of a playoffs spot. Columbus has six points behind
- 4:03Speaker 1: Toronto for the tack a wildcard spot in the East.
- 4:06Speaker 2: What do you make of the coaching change, JD.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Is it too little, too late or is Columbus bond
- 4:10Speaker 1: Rick Bonus gotta go to the playoffs?
- 4:13Speaker 3: Well, I mean a change like this shows clearly that
- 4:17Speaker 3: their hope is to make the playoffs like they want
- 4:20Speaker 3: to in its playoffs or busts. So you know, I think, listen,
- 4:24Speaker 3: this team is proven to be a close knit group.
- 4:26Speaker 4: They love each other.
- 4:27Speaker 3: You know, all the things that happened with Johnny Gudreau
- 4:29Speaker 3: and you know, rest in peace with him and his family.
- 4:32Speaker 3: And I think, you know, Meredith is there shooting the
- 4:35Speaker 3: cannon there yesterday. But I think it's a team that
- 4:39Speaker 3: has highestpirations and I think they're disappointed in their game.
- 4:42Speaker 4: They have, you know, they have all the pieces.
- 4:44Speaker 3: I just you know, goaltending has always been something that's
- 4:46Speaker 3: been a little helter skelter for me. You got one
- 4:48Speaker 3: of the best defensemen in the NHL and some great
- 4:51Speaker 3: top six forwards, so there's no reason why they can't
- 4:54Speaker 3: six points.
- 4:55Speaker 4: At this point of the season.
- 4:57Speaker 3: You kind of have that last you know, twelve ten
- 5:00Speaker 3: game stint push before the break where you need to
- 5:02Speaker 3: really get as close as possible. I feel like after
- 5:05Speaker 3: the break, it's very hard to make up ground as
- 5:08Speaker 3: all teams are coming back and you start seeing more
- 5:10Speaker 3: overtimes and more loser points. You never want that to
- 5:13Speaker 3: happen because typically the end of the season after the
- 5:16Speaker 3: break is a lot more it's a lot more games
- 5:21Speaker 3: against your division, and so that's when you get a
- 5:23Speaker 3: lot of teams that play each other, they go to overtime,
- 5:26Speaker 3: they end up getting a points.
- 5:27Speaker 4: So it's very hard to make up ground.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Now you're playing against teams that aren't really in your division,
- 5:30Speaker 3: you might have one or two, but you're playing against
- 5:32Speaker 3: teams in the other conference. This is when you got
- 5:33Speaker 3: to kind of get your points, get up, get move,
- 5:35Speaker 3: and get as close as possible.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Dean Evison, for whom the expression if luks could kill
- 5:41Speaker 1: was invented, imagine firing that guy. I mean it just
- 5:43Speaker 1: I would just send him a text. I'm like, let's
- 5:45Speaker 1: just not do this in person, because Dean Everson might
- 5:47Speaker 1: just murder you with those eyes.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Oh he's he's a he's a scary man when he's looking.
- 5:52Speaker 3: I don't know how tough he is. If he like
- 5:53Speaker 3: eats glass or anything like that. But did you see
- 5:56Speaker 3: did you see Rick Bonus talk about how he got
- 6:00Speaker 3: the call and was like he thought like the GM
- 6:03Speaker 3: was calling him to give have advice about a player,
- 6:07Speaker 3: like the guy did not want to coach at all
- 6:08Speaker 3: or wasn't even thinking of it, And they're like, yep,
- 6:11Speaker 3: you're coaching, Bud.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Come on any there, Jesus Christ, here comes bones.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Bones can't say no.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Meantime, the Outawa Center is seven announcement to make, and
- 6:19Speaker 1: note it's not about signing goldten er James Reimer, the
- 6:21Speaker 1: former Leaf, to a one year contract and a move
- 6:23Speaker 1: that stunned everybody. The Sins released the statement Friday denying
- 6:27Speaker 1: completely fabricid and false stories that are spreading on social
- 6:31Speaker 1: media a butt our hockey club. At this point, most
- 6:33Speaker 1: people weren't even aware of what the rumors were, but
- 6:35Speaker 1: apparently involving Goldtonerlenus ol Maark and his absence for the team.
- 6:38Speaker 1: By trying to get ahead of the story, the Sins
- 6:40Speaker 1: appear to make it even bigger, putting OUTAWUS players in
- 6:42Speaker 1: the unfortunate position of having to answer questions about these rumors.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Apparently lead us ome Maark again, as we know his
- 6:48Speaker 1: way with the team for personal reasons. People speculating problems
- 6:51Speaker 1: at home, infidelity, blah blah blah. Is this a massive
- 6:54Speaker 1: pr blunder by this sense shady or is there a
- 6:56Speaker 1: method to the madness?
- 6:58Speaker 4: Uh?
- 6:59Speaker 2: You know, you never.
- 7:00Speaker 3: It's tough because when you're in a market like that
- 7:02Speaker 3: in Canada and there's this burner account that comes out
- 7:04Speaker 3: and says x y Z cheated, you know, and it
- 7:08Speaker 3: catches wildfire like that, I can only imagine the amount
- 7:11Speaker 3: of dms from people to the wives of the team,
- 7:16Speaker 3: family members of the team, players of the team, and
- 7:19Speaker 3: the noise gets like, you know, if this happens in
- 7:21Speaker 3: a Columbus, or it happens in a San Jose or
- 7:24Speaker 3: you know, a smaller market, there's none of this kind
- 7:26Speaker 3: of blowback. But in Canada, you know, in a team
- 7:29Speaker 3: like Ottawa and a franchise like this, it just I
- 7:33Speaker 3: think the noise just got too loud and they had
- 7:35Speaker 3: to address it because I can only imagine what like
- 7:38Speaker 3: Lena Solmark's wife or girlfriend. It escapes me whichever one
- 7:43Speaker 3: it is, But if she was getting text messages DMS
- 7:47Speaker 3: from people being like, you know, your husband's a piece
- 7:50Speaker 3: of shit x y Z and I just see that,
- 7:52Speaker 3: you know, but I just you can you can understand
- 7:56Speaker 3: where that comes from. Where it's like they probably had
- 7:58Speaker 3: the knee jerk reaction. Maybe you don't want to address it,
- 8:00Speaker 3: but he becomes so big that you have to. And
- 8:03Speaker 3: I think, you know, Col talked about it as well
- 8:06Speaker 3: and was like, you know, this is bullshit and disgraceful,
- 8:09Speaker 3: and I just think, what, I can't believe a burner
- 8:13Speaker 3: account got this much traction this quickly, Like I'd guys, we'd,
- 8:18Speaker 3: you know, we'd our group chats being like is this
- 8:20Speaker 3: shit real?
- 8:21Speaker 4: Like is this actually real?
- 8:22Speaker 3: And that's just tough when you're in the world we're
- 8:25Speaker 3: in today, where it's like somebody can throw a tweet
- 8:27Speaker 3: out and it potentially you know, disrail in a franchise
- 8:34Speaker 3: and players and families and stuff like that.
- 8:36Speaker 4: So I guess it comes with the job.
- 8:38Speaker 3: It's not really a sexy part of being a professional
- 8:41Speaker 3: athlete is if somebody wants to come out of the
- 8:43Speaker 3: woodwork and kind of fuck you over or try to
- 8:46Speaker 3: mess with you.
- 8:47Speaker 4: But I don't know if it's true.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I can't speculate on it, but all I know is
- 8:50Speaker 3: that I feel like the way they reacted to it
- 8:53Speaker 3: probably not true because if and I'm just gonna put
- 8:56Speaker 3: my teammate hat on it, if lenas Olmark actually outed
- 8:59Speaker 3: all the guys, he probably would not be with us
- 9:02Speaker 3: anymore because he would have got jump by everybody.
- 9:05Speaker 2: It would be like a full metal jacket situation. I'm
- 9:07Speaker 2: just taking a bar of soap and towels just beating him.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Oh yeah, they would have tied him to the bed.
- 9:11Speaker 4: They would have.
- 9:12Speaker 1: If you get caught cheating by your partner and then
- 9:14Speaker 1: you tell her, well, don't worry, x y Z here
- 9:16Speaker 1: all cheating as well, and then that person then goes
- 9:19Speaker 1: and tells all their wives of girlfriends.
- 9:20Speaker 2: That's like the ultimate ultimate thing you can't do.
- 9:23Speaker 3: JD I kind of you know when you think about it,
- 9:25Speaker 3: like not that this didn't happen, but that's a hell
- 9:29Speaker 3: of a move. Take everybody down with you at this point,
- 9:32Speaker 3: you're like, if I'm fucking going down, Hey, no honor
- 9:36Speaker 3: amongst thieves. At this point, I'm gonna try to I'm
- 9:40Speaker 3: gonna try to mitigate.
- 9:41Speaker 4: He made me do it.
- 9:42Speaker 5: He made me do it.
- 9:44Speaker 2: All scum. It's not just me.
- 9:46Speaker 4: It's not just me.
- 9:47Speaker 2: I'm the least a bunch I was abriated.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Uh No, I don't listen. I don't. I don't.
- 9:53Speaker 3: I don't take any kind of credence to it at all,
- 9:56Speaker 3: and I don't. I don't think there's anything. There's anything there.
- 10:00Speaker 3: I just think it's unfortunate that that happens. And if
- 10:03Speaker 3: it did, if this that was the case, he wouldn't
- 10:05Speaker 3: be on the team. He'd be off the team probably,
- 10:08Speaker 3: and they would have put him on waivers, and you
- 10:09Speaker 3: would there'd have been more signs than right now. They're
- 10:11Speaker 3: all coming out and supporting them, so it's obviously right
- 10:13Speaker 3: something that's not that.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Good point worst news for Sens fans. The Leafs on
- 10:17Speaker 1: a hater right now. They're back in a playoff spot.
- 10:19Speaker 1: They lost in Utah on Tuesday, but that was their
- 10:21Speaker 1: first regulation loss in December twenty, first coming off and
- 10:24Speaker 1: impressive OT win in Colorado that was eye opening. Austin
- 10:27Speaker 1: Matthews seven goals is last seven games. Willie styalas your
- 10:31Speaker 1: boy back in the lineup, got the OT winner against
- 10:34Speaker 1: that powerhouse Avalanche team. Ten straight games the Leaves had
- 10:37Speaker 1: a point until as I mentioned that loss against Utah.
- 10:39Speaker 1: It looks like they got their mojo back Monday. Will
- 10:42Speaker 1: have them on Prime against Quinn Hughes, the Minnesota whild
- 10:44Speaker 1: your thoughts and the Leafs turning things around.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's tough to go in Colorado and then
- 10:51Speaker 3: play the Lake game and then play Utah in the
- 10:53Speaker 3: late game at elevation, back to back. I mean I
- 10:57Speaker 3: could have that is the That is a gambler's delight. Yeah,
- 11:01Speaker 3: that game last sight. I caught it too late.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I tell you what, rappers delight to gambler's delight, that's
- 11:08Speaker 1: what you're.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Touch your house on that one. Because back to back,
- 11:11Speaker 3: back to back. I don't know if there's a betting
- 11:13Speaker 3: we can get a betting sponsor here. We're not a
- 11:14Speaker 3: loud sponsors on our show, no video those sponsors. But
- 11:18Speaker 3: I think, uh, you know, they've been playing some great hockey.
- 11:22Speaker 3: I mean Austin Matthews seems like he's found his mojo again,
- 11:25Speaker 3: which is which is awesome. You know, it's always fun.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I love Austin Matthews the goal scorer. I love watching
- 11:30Speaker 3: him just be so dominant. I think he gets such
- 11:33Speaker 3: a bad rap around the league, you know, because everybody
- 11:36Speaker 3: lumps him in with the McKinnon's and the McDavid's and
- 11:39Speaker 3: you know these guys that I think are just untouchable
- 11:42Speaker 3: up top, these top two or three guys that just
- 11:45Speaker 3: there's just no one going to catch them. They're just
- 11:47Speaker 3: in a different world altogether. But he's been amazing for them.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Their team's looking more and more healthy. Joseph wol has
- 11:53Speaker 3: been really playing some good hockey. And you know, having
- 11:56Speaker 3: Willie Nelander come back and play the way he did
- 11:59Speaker 3: in Colorado is is pretty It's pretty spad. Everybody's kind
- 12:02Speaker 3: of worried how he would, you know, be sliding back
- 12:05Speaker 3: into that roster and if you kind of disrupt some
- 12:06Speaker 3: things because they're in a little bit of a heater.
- 12:08Speaker 4: But he's, uh, he looked really good.
- 12:10Speaker 3: And I mean the one thing he's is he attempting
- 12:13Speaker 3: to get on season two of Heated Rivalry. Potentially every
- 12:17Speaker 3: interview is like, is a crotch up, no shirt, sweating,
- 12:21Speaker 3: and he's like and he's like, looks like he's oiled up.
- 12:26Speaker 4: And I was going to tweet about.
- 12:27Speaker 2: It, but I was like, is he should have tweeted
- 12:29Speaker 2: about that?
- 12:29Speaker 5: Just?
- 12:30Speaker 3: I think, so, Hudson Williams, you got a season two
- 12:34Speaker 3: of Heated Rivalry. Willie Nilander has to make a cameo
- 12:38Speaker 3: the little chest hair. I'm like Jesus Willy, slow down.
- 12:42Speaker 3: He keeps them for the rest of us.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Jesus slick.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Look at a branch out a little bit that could
- 12:48Speaker 2: be pretty good, by the way, talents a Hated Rivalry
- 12:51Speaker 2: Golden Globe story first later, So that's coming up in
- 12:53Speaker 2: set of sixty, just to tweet it.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Which on the interview with Gail King talco ahead.
- 12:59Speaker 2: No, Dal's got something else for us. No, I mean
- 13:01Speaker 2: we can say quick now. I was gonna wait till later.
- 13:03Speaker 6: I have a friend who was a DJ'd the CAA
- 13:06Speaker 6: after party nice at the Globes, and apparently the two
- 13:09Speaker 6: stars of Heated Rivalry recently signed a CAA and they
- 13:13Speaker 6: showed up at the party and that was like everyone
- 13:16Speaker 6: was buzzing, like it wasn't you know, it wasn't over
- 13:19Speaker 6: a DiCaprio entrance or a Shalame entrance. The stars of
- 13:22Speaker 6: Heated Rivalry came into the party and everyone was just
- 13:25Speaker 6: like turning.
- 13:26Speaker 2: It was they felt the presence of these two guys.
- 13:29Speaker 6: They're definitely having a moment right now, which is which
- 13:32Speaker 6: is fun to see.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Good for hockey, whatever it takes you, all right, Teach
- 13:36Speaker 1: me how to Dougie, Jack and Luke when the bow
- 13:38Speaker 1: of the Hughes Brothers Monday Night, Devil's beat older brother
- 13:41Speaker 1: Quinn Hughes in the wild five to two Monday Night
- 13:43Speaker 1: defense from Dougie Hamilton back in the line after the win,
- 13:45Speaker 1: after being a healthy scratch Sunday against Winnipeg, that absence
- 13:49Speaker 1: leading to speculation that Hamilton could be traded. He's three
- 13:51Speaker 1: seasons removed from that twenty two goals seventy four points season,
- 13:55Speaker 1: two years left to this contract after this year. We're
- 13:58Speaker 1: poorly blocking a trade to your Sharks over the summer.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Do you think this is it for Dougie Hamilton?
- 14:04Speaker 3: I mean, we don't want him in San Jose, So
- 14:07Speaker 3: go fuck yourself. You don't want to go to San Jose?
- 14:09Speaker 2: Nice like?
- 14:10Speaker 3: You know, that's a that's a that's my team, it's
- 14:13Speaker 3: my squad. Uh No, I listen, Dougie Hamilton. You know
- 14:17Speaker 3: you gms are the ones that are at fault for
- 14:21Speaker 3: giving guys no move clauses. You have every right to
- 14:23Speaker 3: exercise it, but by or beware, if a team wants
- 14:29Speaker 3: to get rid of you, they'll find a way to
- 14:30Speaker 3: make you as uncomfortable as possible to waive that no
- 14:33Speaker 3: move clause, so you know, he hasn't moved and this
- 14:36Speaker 3: team's been kind of in a spiral. Wasn't a spiral.
- 14:39Speaker 3: They kind of finally won one, but they were in
- 14:41Speaker 3: a spiral. You know, after all that Quinn Hughes nonsense
- 14:44Speaker 3: and Dougie Hamilton didn't want to wave his no move clause,
- 14:46Speaker 3: and you know, I think it's just from there, it's
- 14:48Speaker 3: kind of just started, you know, got out of control
- 14:50Speaker 3: a little bit and they're trying to wrangle this back,
- 14:52Speaker 3: so they scratch him. Goba Savage comes back. They lose it,
- 14:56Speaker 3: don't they, you know, drop a game to Winnipeg, and
- 14:58Speaker 3: then they win this next one. So do I think
- 15:00Speaker 3: he's gonna end up waving? You know, his agent came
- 15:03Speaker 3: out and kind of put some water on the on
- 15:05Speaker 3: the flames and the rumors, being like we're trying to
- 15:08Speaker 3: work with them, and you know, so now it's just
- 15:10Speaker 3: a posturing and positioning him who could make the other
- 15:13Speaker 3: side look worse. But you know, this Devil's team that
- 15:16Speaker 3: had high, high aspirations to win a Stanley Cup. I mean,
- 15:20Speaker 3: I don't think they can win without bringing something in.
- 15:24Speaker 3: And the only big trading piece is Dougie Hamilton. So
- 15:27Speaker 3: I did see somebody float out Dougie Hamilton for Darnell Nurse. Wow,
- 15:34Speaker 3: as like a one for one with the money swapped
- 15:37Speaker 3: the money lefty righty, you know if if Darnagh wasn't happy,
- 15:41Speaker 3: I don't think, you know. But that also frees up
- 15:45Speaker 3: cap space for the oil not doesn't free up castles
- 15:48Speaker 3: for the oilers, but it just brings in, you know,
- 15:51Speaker 3: another right shot to go behind Bouchard. So now they
- 15:54Speaker 3: have their one two punch, you know potential. I kind
- 15:57Speaker 3: of was like, oh, that's not a bad trade. It
- 15:59Speaker 3: solves their lefty righty and then for them they get
- 16:01Speaker 3: Darnell Nurse, who's a great defenseman and he's an they're lefties.
- 16:05Speaker 3: So it's I think it's, uh, that's just my little
- 16:08Speaker 3: you know, rumor millshit that I'm thrown out there. Hopefully
- 16:11Speaker 3: put some gasoline on the fire and I'll get called
- 16:14Speaker 3: into a couple spots for podcasts, for radio hits, because
- 16:19Speaker 3: radio hits.
- 16:19Speaker 2: In Edmonton, New Jersey, that's what you're seeing right now.
- 16:22Speaker 3: This I'm called radio hit in New Jersey, I mean
- 16:25Speaker 3: not New Jersey, but in uh in Edmonton. I mean,
- 16:27Speaker 3: I need something. You know, those sponsors know nothing. We
- 16:30Speaker 3: need something.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Holding a sponsors, We got a market That's our marketing
- 16:34Speaker 4: tactic is is Rai's rampant speculation.
- 16:37Speaker 2: They're getting radio hit money. That's what you're telling me
- 16:39Speaker 2: right now.
- 16:39Speaker 3: That's our That's the only way we can market for
- 16:42Speaker 3: this is on radio or an audio.
- 16:45Speaker 2: We'll take it. That's what that's what that's to Bels,
- 16:47Speaker 2: We'll take it.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Big Knight, take anything, Big Knight for number ninety one
- 16:51Speaker 1: special season Detroit made even more special seeing Surrogey Federalf
- 16:54Speaker 1: still looks great, by the way, thirteen seasons in Detroit,
- 16:57Speaker 1: when three Stanley Cups scored four hundred goals nin hundred
- 17:00Speaker 1: fifty four points, won the Heart Trophy in nineteen ninety four,
- 17:03Speaker 1: sign with him and O three.
- 17:05Speaker 2: And then it was just bizarre.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Played with Columbus in Washington before finishing his career in Russia.
- 17:10Speaker 1: At the ceremony, what was notable was Federoff admitted going
- 17:13Speaker 1: to Anaheim was a mistake.
- 17:14Speaker 2: He's not wrong.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Detroit won the Cup five years later. You could make
- 17:17Speaker 1: the case he would have won more. You got Nick Linstrom,
- 17:19Speaker 1: pabl Datsu, Kenrick Zenderberg, Thomas Holmestrom, Johann Franz. And it
- 17:23Speaker 1: makes you think JD one of the great what ifs.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Of all time? What if Federoff had not gone to Anaheim?
- 17:27Speaker 2: Loved him in Detroit.
- 17:28Speaker 1: He was a great player to watch, and you think
- 17:30Speaker 1: of the Russian wave and all those players coming over.
- 17:32Speaker 1: The guy was silky smooth, an absolute stud. Never should
- 17:34Speaker 1: have left.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Yeah, sometimes the grass isn't always greener, but I'm sure
- 17:39Speaker 3: he says that. But he enjoyed the sand there for
- 17:41Speaker 3: a little bit in the beach and yeah, but yeah,
- 17:43Speaker 3: I think he. I mean, he was so good. I
- 17:47Speaker 3: love those skates. I need to get a pair of those.
- 17:49Speaker 3: While all the guys were in his his skates and
- 17:52Speaker 3: warm ups and it's cool.
- 17:53Speaker 4: I mean, he was one of the.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Great you know, he could he played both sides of
- 17:57Speaker 3: the puck ford and defense. Uh you know, played at
- 18:01Speaker 3: times as a defenseman. Always also sup fort amy. He
- 18:04Speaker 3: was silky smooth, slick, you know, just a wizard with
- 18:08Speaker 3: the puck. And yeah, to have those guys back together
- 18:10Speaker 3: and staying there in Detroit would have been just cinema
- 18:17Speaker 3: to have them continue there run. But you know, sometimes
- 18:19Speaker 3: it's just you don't know a good thing until it's gone,
- 18:22Speaker 3: and you don't you know, you wish you knew you
- 18:24Speaker 3: were in the good times. Yea, when you were in
- 18:26Speaker 3: him so well, said life coach or andany Bernard would
- 18:31Speaker 3: say from the office, very good.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Good reference still to come here.
- 18:35Speaker 1: In NHL inscripted, Bill Zito, Stanley Cup winning general manager
- 18:38Speaker 1: of the Florida Panthers. He's got stories not just about
- 18:41Speaker 1: how he acquire Brad Marsham motivation there, but also his
- 18:44Speaker 1: former client Tim Thomas making his day on the ice
- 18:47Speaker 1: back in twenty eleven.
- 18:48Speaker 2: That's coming up after this. You're an NHL in scripted
- 19:04Speaker 2: Our next guest played collegiately.
- 19:06Speaker 1: At Yale before starting ACME World Sports in nineteen ninety
- 19:09Speaker 1: five and building into a top agency representing NHL All Stars.
- 19:13Speaker 1: From there, he worked in the Columbus Blue Jackets organization
- 19:16Speaker 1: for seven seasons, serving as assistant general manager and vice
- 19:19Speaker 1: president of hockey operations. In twenty twenty, he was named
- 19:22Speaker 1: general manager of the Florida Panthers. Since then, the Panthers
- 19:25Speaker 1: have played in three straight Stanley Cup Finals, winning the
- 19:28Speaker 1: last two. He's also part of the management group for
- 19:30Speaker 1: USA Hockey's Olympic team and the founder, along with his
- 19:33Speaker 1: wife Julie, of Panthers on the Prow, a fundraising campaign
- 19:37Speaker 1: to raise money for cancer research. Bill's you know, thanks
- 19:40Speaker 1: mich for giving us a few minutes here on Anchel
- 19:41Speaker 1: in scripted.
- 19:43Speaker 5: Good morning, good morning, Thanks for having them.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Of course, it's been a unique season for you, phil Ke,
- 19:49Speaker 1: Sorry I say that again.
- 19:50Speaker 2: It looks like a little then I get that all
- 19:53Speaker 2: the time. You know.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I was actually in Buffalo and Craig Muni was calling
- 19:57Speaker 1: out to me and I go, hey, how are you?
- 19:58Speaker 1: And I didn't recognize it was He goes, it's Craig
- 19:59Speaker 1: Muniy my Cay. He goes, Shelley, It's great to see
- 20:01Speaker 1: you again. So I had to pretend I was Christian
- 20:04Speaker 1: tell you this for correct Munty. It was great, good
- 20:06Speaker 1: looking guys.
- 20:06Speaker 5: So you're in good shape.
- 20:08Speaker 2: I appreciate it's a good comp But thank you, Bill.
- 20:10Speaker 1: It's certainly been a unique season for you, you know,
- 20:12Speaker 1: so many key players being in another lineup and if
- 20:14Speaker 1: the team is still there. You obviously had a very
- 20:17Speaker 1: successful event with reguards to Winter Classic.
- 20:19Speaker 2: What's been like for you navigating this season?
- 20:22Speaker 5: Uh, just just day to day, right, It's probably no
- 20:25Speaker 5: different than anybody else. The years you don't have any injuries,
- 20:29Speaker 5: you thank your lucky stars when you get to the
- 20:31Speaker 5: rink every morning, and then other days you just have
- 20:34Speaker 5: to react and everybody goes through it. It's a little
- 20:37Speaker 5: more time consuming as you sit down every day and
- 20:41Speaker 5: do the what ifs. Well, if we have this player
- 20:45Speaker 5: on this day, then I'll do this trying to yeah,
- 20:50Speaker 5: just keep things afloat and be pragmatic in our approach
- 20:54Speaker 5: to to our roster every day.
- 20:57Speaker 3: How you know, bill for you as a GM when
- 21:01Speaker 3: you have all these you know, injuries to key players, Like,
- 21:03Speaker 3: how hard is it as a GM to kind of
- 21:05Speaker 3: stay patient when you know you're probably taking in a
- 21:08Speaker 3: lot of information from a lot of different people and
- 21:10Speaker 3: just being the ability and having the ability to kind
- 21:13Speaker 3: of stay in the pocket, so to speak.
- 21:17Speaker 5: I think it's it's probably easier than you think in
- 21:22Speaker 5: so far as there's nothing you can do. So there's
- 21:26Speaker 5: so many, so many parts to this job that I
- 21:28Speaker 5: would get frustrated with, and through the the kindness and
- 21:37Speaker 5: guidance of other people who have encouraged me, and not
- 21:43Speaker 5: just me, probably any other people who come into this
- 21:46Speaker 5: job worry about the stuff you can control. Just there's
- 21:51Speaker 5: no don't even doesn't even phase you. If you control
- 21:54Speaker 5: it and you you position your brain the right way,
- 21:57Speaker 5: then you worry about the things you can and the
- 21:59Speaker 5: other stuff happens like nothing you can do about it.
- 22:03Speaker 5: So now that the confusing part is well, maybe I
- 22:09Speaker 5: could do something about it, right if the if the
- 22:13Speaker 5: food was better, would they not get sick? If we
- 22:17Speaker 5: slept an hour later and we've practice later where Joe
- 22:21Speaker 5: blow and not have gotten hurt asle You know, you
- 22:24Speaker 5: can take that to a pretty ridiculous degree. But at
- 22:28Speaker 5: least we do, I guess have a little more a
- 22:31Speaker 5: little more confusion, you know, every day just making sure listen,
- 22:36Speaker 5: control the things we can and don't worry about the
- 22:38Speaker 5: things we can.
- 22:40Speaker 2: It's a good rule of thumb in life.
- 22:41Speaker 1: But you're right, you can make yourself neurotic if you
- 22:43Speaker 1: start worrying with every single detail.
- 22:44Speaker 2: There's no question about it.
- 22:45Speaker 1: And Matthew, you can shock is such a special player, Bill,
- 22:48Speaker 1: Obviously he's nearing a return. What can you tell us
- 22:50Speaker 1: about a potential time of when he could be back
- 22:52Speaker 1: and what kind of an impact you'll have on this team?
- 22:56Speaker 5: Not a thing, No, he's a pretty good hockey player.
- 23:02Speaker 5: So I think he's kind of in the final weeks
- 23:05Speaker 5: of his of his rehab. I kind of leave him alone,
- 23:09Speaker 5: and when he's back, he's back. It's just it's just
- 23:11Speaker 5: like what we just talked about, right, when someone tells
- 23:15Speaker 5: me he's playing, he's playing, and you know he his
- 23:22Speaker 5: impact is obviously on the ice, right, he's a world
- 23:24Speaker 5: class player, but also in our room with the guys,
- 23:30Speaker 5: his energy is it's unique and it would be great
- 23:37Speaker 5: to have him back in the mix. And I think
- 23:39Speaker 5: he'll bring an energy and enthusiasm to our room and
- 23:43Speaker 5: to the boys that the probably only he can bring.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Bill.
- 23:49Speaker 3: You know, he's going to be part of the Olympic roster,
- 23:51Speaker 3: you know, God willing if he's fully healthy. But you know,
- 23:54Speaker 3: for you being a part of that, and since that
- 23:57Speaker 3: roster has been announced, you know, the best part about
- 24:00Speaker 3: the NHL and the fans is they love dissecting any list,
- 24:02Speaker 3: any roster, anything of that capacity. So for like so
- 24:06Speaker 3: many elite players to choose from, for you guys, what
- 24:09Speaker 3: was the selection process like for everyone in the management
- 24:12Speaker 3: team and was it kind of smooth sailing or is
- 24:15Speaker 3: it kind of similar to what we talked about before
- 24:16Speaker 3: of like there's it's a lot of taking guidance and
- 24:19Speaker 3: really weighing all the options.
- 24:21Speaker 5: It was fascinating for me and I'm very grateful to
- 24:25Speaker 5: be a part of it. And Billy Garon, who's the
- 24:28Speaker 5: general manager, did a wonderful job of conflict with love
- 24:34Speaker 5: maybe where the conversations were open, honest and hard without
- 24:40Speaker 5: being personal or or negative. You could disagree with somebody's opinion,
- 24:46Speaker 5: but you know, you didn't disagree or disrespect them, So
- 24:50Speaker 5: it was a very very healthy way. He's very, very
- 24:54Speaker 5: thorough and No, I'm very appreciative to be a part
- 25:01Speaker 5: of it and very impressed with how that selection, how
- 25:05Speaker 5: our processes worked, and probably steal a few things and
- 25:09Speaker 5: implement them on our.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Set as you should.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting, Bill, going back to your agency days,
- 25:17Speaker 1: you had Tim Thomas, two Karascus clients when they're both
- 25:20Speaker 1: fighting for the net in Boston.
- 25:21Speaker 2: How complicated did that get?
- 25:23Speaker 5: It was? Uh, you know, I reflect back on it now,
- 25:26Speaker 5: I'm not sure today I could have done it. But
- 25:30Speaker 5: they were really both really gracious and kind to me.
- 25:36Speaker 5: They understood, and it was we were very open and honest.
- 25:40Speaker 5: And do you guys have a problem with this Billy,
- 25:43Speaker 5: you know, do you know, I'm fine, you know, and
- 25:46Speaker 5: I think I think that they understood that play was
- 25:52Speaker 5: based on merit and I wasn't the kosher I wasn't
- 25:56Speaker 5: the team. I couldn't. I could just help them with
- 25:58Speaker 5: their contracts and their careers, and it I think the
- 26:02Speaker 5: situation helped that timmy one of the cons mic. So
- 26:06Speaker 5: it wasn't like Tuca was sitting there saying, well, jeez,
- 26:09Speaker 5: I can't understand why this guy is playing. I think
- 26:13Speaker 5: he understood, and it was. It was a great experience
- 26:18Speaker 5: for me and two really really good guys who both
- 26:21Speaker 5: of them did a lot for me, what.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Billy for you?
- 26:25Speaker 3: You know, Tim Thomas is such a colorful personality, and
- 26:30Speaker 3: I'm sure you've had some amazing phone calls with him.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Is there any kind of story that sticks out with
- 26:34Speaker 3: you about Tim Thomas' character who he is as a guy,
- 26:37Speaker 3: because the things you hear are just amazing.
- 26:40Speaker 5: So when Boston wanted in Vancouver, I was there. Yeah,
- 26:48Speaker 5: and you see, now you know, the whole world goes
- 26:50Speaker 5: on the ice, right the peanut venters on the ice
- 26:52Speaker 5: of it. And this was like twenty ten. I Melissa's
- 26:57Speaker 5: wife said, you know as you want to go. No, no,
- 27:00Speaker 5: Asians don't go, it's not appropriate. And I was standing
- 27:05Speaker 5: in the hallway kind of underneath in Vancouver by myself,
- 27:08Speaker 5: like security guards were out, like everyone was watching the
- 27:11Speaker 5: Stanley Cup. And he came off the ice and got
- 27:15Speaker 5: me and brought me back and said, we've been through
- 27:20Speaker 5: a lot together. I can't you're gonna be here with me?
- 27:23Speaker 5: And then I stood at center ice with him, and
- 27:25Speaker 5: I was so touched, and I saw Peter Schirelli, who
- 27:28Speaker 5: gave him his chance and who believed in it. You
- 27:30Speaker 5: have to understand that for eight or nine years with
- 27:33Speaker 5: Tim Thomas, people made fun of me, like where you're
- 27:36Speaker 5: gonna sell Tim Thomas again? And it was he never
- 27:46Speaker 5: bailed on me. You know, he probably could have said
- 27:48Speaker 5: it was my agent and I wouldn't have blamed him.
- 27:52Speaker 5: So that was something that showed me his level of
- 27:56Speaker 5: integrity and grace. And it was funny because then it
- 28:00Speaker 5: became a fun interesting moment because then Tuca came over.
- 28:03Speaker 5: It was kind of laughing at us. You guys are dorks,
- 28:06Speaker 5: right like, and then someone from PR someone came to
- 28:11Speaker 5: Timmy and said, come on, we gotta go. I don't
- 28:14Speaker 5: think he had he had been awarded the trophy yet
- 28:17Speaker 5: the consmiat. So those two guys skated away and I'm
- 28:20Speaker 5: standing literally at center ice by myself, realizing you're not
- 28:26Speaker 5: a part of this, you have nothing to do with this.
- 28:30Speaker 5: And I walked off the ice and I went to
- 28:33Speaker 5: my hotel, grabbed my bag, took the subway to the airport.
- 28:36Speaker 5: Remember they had all the all the stuff in the
- 28:38Speaker 5: street and everything. Took the stubway, then got out and
- 28:41Speaker 5: took found a cab, went to the airport, got on
- 28:43Speaker 5: the next flight, went home, and I was really like,
- 28:47Speaker 5: it was one of the things that made me really
- 28:50Speaker 5: want to investigate the next opportunity to get to the
- 28:53Speaker 5: league side, because it was it was really sad like
- 28:58Speaker 5: for me. Yeah, but pretty special.
- 29:02Speaker 2: That's a unique story.
- 29:04Speaker 1: It's it's also greatly to been doing Billy, You and
- 29:05Speaker 1: your wife Julian incredible work raising funds for Panthers on
- 29:09Speaker 1: the prow again raising money for cancer research.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Where did that idea first stem from?
- 29:14Speaker 5: Well, it's a hybrid. It was Julie's idea. But I
- 29:17Speaker 5: don't know if you guys were around at Chicago around
- 29:20Speaker 5: two thousand and two thousand and five, they had these
- 29:22Speaker 5: life sized cows out on Michigan Avenue and it was
- 29:25Speaker 5: called I think Cows on Parade and it started as
- 29:28Speaker 5: an art exhibit and then became a tourist exhibit. So
- 29:31Speaker 5: like out in front of the Italian Place, you know,
- 29:34Speaker 5: the cow was painted like a chef, and then American
- 29:37Speaker 5: Airlines had you know, wings on theirs or whatever. It was, right,
- 29:40Speaker 5: but it was it was so special and so interesting
- 29:44Speaker 5: that people would come as tourists just to see the cows.
- 29:47Speaker 5: And someone had given us life size panther statues, and
- 29:50Speaker 5: Julie thought, why don't we Why don't we sell if
- 29:53Speaker 5: you will, or you know, get donations for the panthers.
- 29:56Speaker 5: People can individualize them and personalize them. And the fun
- 29:59Speaker 5: part is it can be anything for anyone. So could
- 30:04Speaker 5: be really poignant, it could be sad like, it could
- 30:07Speaker 5: be you can honor someone, or it could just be
- 30:09Speaker 5: silly and fun like. So the response has been phenomenal.
- 30:15Speaker 5: And then uh, a local artist, Romero Brito, said, why
- 30:19Speaker 5: don't you auction mine? You'll get a considerable you know
- 30:23Speaker 5: some for that. So we did that and now we're
- 30:26Speaker 5: we're in the auction stage and we have some some
- 30:29Speaker 5: pretty special Panthers, so very very optimistic about reaching our
- 30:35Speaker 5: goal on now.
- 30:35Speaker 4: One is the one from the artist?
- 30:38Speaker 3: Is that kind of your favorite one or do you
- 30:39Speaker 3: have one that is kind of closest to you?
- 30:43Speaker 5: I gotta tell you, Michael Bubla did one wow. And
- 30:48Speaker 5: I think he did it with his niece whose name
- 30:50Speaker 5: escapes me in the moment. And and I know his
- 30:54Speaker 5: son had some vision issues with uh, I think with
- 30:57Speaker 5: the chemotherapy or with his cancer. And it's in Braille
- 31:01Speaker 5: and it's one of the most powerful things that are seeing.
- 31:04Speaker 5: Like when you see it at you, it gives you pause.
- 31:08Speaker 5: It's beautiful and then aesthetically like it's a it's like
- 31:11Speaker 5: a leopard print with a deep blues and purple. It's
- 31:14Speaker 5: really subtle. It's really cool.
- 31:18Speaker 2: That is awesome. It's obviously a fasting life you've led. Bill.
- 31:21Speaker 2: I want to take you way back as a baseball fan.
- 31:24Speaker 1: You were the bat boy for the Brewers team made
- 31:26Speaker 1: it all the way to the World Series in nineteen eight.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Are you kidding me? You've got stories of Robin the
- 31:29Speaker 2: l Paul malder See. So Cooper, what do you got?
- 31:32Speaker 5: It was the guys you don't have enough time? Oh,
- 31:36Speaker 5: we do.
- 31:37Speaker 2: This is a career highlight.
- 31:38Speaker 5: Yeah, Now it was the most special. I you know,
- 31:43Speaker 5: I look at my son and I think, this kid's
- 31:44Speaker 5: the prince. He's the luckiest kid in the world. Right,
- 31:47Speaker 5: it comes to the rink and watches hockey, and but
- 31:53Speaker 5: that opportunity for me. The guys were so gracious, so kind,
- 31:58Speaker 5: they understood, so helpful, and I mean we had it down.
- 32:06Speaker 5: We would get there early. We would we would do
- 32:08Speaker 5: the laundry, clean the shoes, to our chores, and then
- 32:10Speaker 5: we could go play. We'd go to batting practice and
- 32:12Speaker 5: shag balls or you know, we go and take batting
- 32:15Speaker 5: practice or we go like whatever. It was. It was
- 32:18Speaker 5: like a playground with all of these future Hall of famers.
- 32:25Speaker 5: Just a great, great experience.
- 32:28Speaker 3: How how nerve wracking was it early on to the
- 32:32Speaker 3: shack of the bats and make sure you're getting back
- 32:34Speaker 3: in time like like that's it's such a It's an
- 32:38Speaker 3: underrated gig, I think for kids, because there's a lot
- 32:41Speaker 3: that goes into it potentially that maybe I don't see
- 32:44Speaker 3: from afar, but it seems like at times it could
- 32:46Speaker 3: be you don't want to be in the way and
- 32:48Speaker 3: you kind of want to be a side but Joseph
- 32:50Speaker 3: want to make sure you're getting in and out quickly.
- 32:52Speaker 5: Right, there's a great story and all tality in a moment.
- 32:57Speaker 5: This was night in the early eighties. Right. We had
- 33:00Speaker 5: one security guard, uncle Wally, who slept in front of
- 33:03Speaker 5: the door. Anybody could have come in and in fact,
- 33:06Speaker 5: like when it rained, like on those types of nights,
- 33:10Speaker 5: I'd call my buddies and have them come down and
- 33:13Speaker 5: just help clean, right, because everything's money, you're doing laundry
- 33:16Speaker 5: during the game, you're cleaning. Like. There was all kinds
- 33:19Speaker 5: of things that would happen where it was just sort
- 33:25Speaker 5: of a free for all, but it worked. But there
- 33:28Speaker 5: was one situation when I first started. I was down
- 33:31Speaker 5: the right field line. You know that the kids will
- 33:33Speaker 5: get the foul balls, and yeah, well they play catch.
- 33:36Speaker 5: One of them plays catch with the odd man out
- 33:38Speaker 5: in the outfield. So Reggie Jackson was in the right
- 33:42Speaker 5: field and the center fielder was playing with the left
- 33:44Speaker 5: field and he comes and I'm looking. He's pretty far,
- 33:49Speaker 5: so he fires the laser beam at me. I managed
- 33:52Speaker 5: to catch it. My arms about to fall and I
- 33:56Speaker 5: get it and it goes sailing over his head. The
- 34:01Speaker 5: right field fans go nuts. Right right. So he trots
- 34:05Speaker 5: back and gets it. Then he throws another one. I
- 34:09Speaker 5: throw another one over his head. So this happens a
- 34:12Speaker 5: couple of times. The game starts, I mean the inning starts.
- 34:15Speaker 5: He comes out for the next inning, and I ran
- 34:17Speaker 5: out there and I said, listen, could you could you
- 34:20Speaker 5: play with the center fielder. I can't get it to you?
- 34:23Speaker 5: He said, can't get it to me, threw it over
- 34:25Speaker 5: my head. You can get it to me. I'm here
- 34:28Speaker 5: all night. We're going to get this down. You're fine.
- 34:31Speaker 5: I on mind, We're fine, and and help me. And
- 34:35Speaker 5: then you know, maybe by two more innings we were
- 34:37Speaker 5: playing catch and like at that time he was ready,
- 34:42Speaker 5: like he had a candy bar right. So special, so great.
- 34:51Speaker 4: I got goose bumps right now that.
- 34:56Speaker 5: It was that kind of Uh, I don't know. I
- 34:59Speaker 5: used that word around here a lot grace. That Brewers
- 35:01Speaker 5: team reminds me a lot of our guys.
- 35:03Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 35:04Speaker 3: Uh, you know, speaking of special jobs, you were a
- 35:07Speaker 3: GM of the Lake Erie Monsters, the Columbus Hlfhill you
- 35:10Speaker 3: guys want to call their cup in twenty sixteen, I
- 35:14Speaker 3: mean co tenants with the Cuocking Loans at the Quicker
- 35:16Speaker 3: Loans Arena with the Cleveland Cavaliers first time they win
- 35:20Speaker 3: an NBA championship. Lebron's around, But like, talk about that
- 35:23Speaker 3: experience in Lake Erie and just taking that team.
- 35:27Speaker 4: I mean, you had some youd I was looking at
- 35:29Speaker 4: the roster.
- 35:29Speaker 3: You did good cast of character zach O Wrensky's first
- 35:32Speaker 3: year as well, So just talk about that whole experience.
- 35:36Speaker 5: It was phenomenal and I learned so much from from Yarmol,
- 35:43Speaker 5: you know, going through it and serving serving as an
- 35:48Speaker 5: advisor and helping and explaining and nudging me on players
- 35:56Speaker 5: and on Jared Bednar, who I disagreed with when I
- 36:00Speaker 5: first came in on a lot of things and then
- 36:02Speaker 5: figured out maybe this I knows what he's doing. It
- 36:09Speaker 5: was great And one one kind of fun fact is,
- 36:13Speaker 5: and I have pictures on my phone if you go
- 36:16Speaker 5: to the parade that they held for the Monsters, it's
- 36:21Speaker 5: like one point five million people there. Well I neglected
- 36:26Speaker 5: to share with you that it was also the parade
- 36:29Speaker 5: for the Calves, so we were all in the same parade.
- 36:32Speaker 5: But it was nuts. I mean it was it was
- 36:35Speaker 5: so much fun, just a great great Actually hockey.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Town, did you cross paths with Lebron at all.
- 36:45Speaker 5: Once in the hallway. Once in the hallway, he must
- 36:50Speaker 5: have been getting treatment or something. We were rarely there
- 36:54Speaker 5: at the same time as them. I think the guys
- 36:56Speaker 5: probably did right. But that setup is outstanding. It's a
- 37:01Speaker 5: great arena. I mean, you're in the you're in the
- 37:05Speaker 5: minor leagues trying to make it to the NHL, and
- 37:07Speaker 5: you're playing in the same house as Lebron. That's pretty cool.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's very cool.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Also very cool is the play of Brad Barshan, who
- 37:14Speaker 1: has just been an absolute stuff for you guys for
- 37:16Speaker 1: a good reason. Bill, you we have been widely acclaimed
- 37:19Speaker 1: for those types of moves and making that trade last season.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Can you just walk us through that process.
- 37:24Speaker 1: How you identified he'd be such a key piece for you,
- 37:26Speaker 1: not only last season but also this year.
- 37:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it goes to his character and whatever.
- 37:32Speaker 5: I mean as far as the move, I don't know,
- 37:34Speaker 5: you want you want Brad marsh on your team, Okay,
- 37:37Speaker 5: I don't. I don't think that's a great uh accomplishment
- 37:42Speaker 5: To understand, he's a pretty bad hogging player. But but
- 37:46Speaker 5: as a person, like the fun thing for me was
- 37:48Speaker 5: to see that infectious energy that he has. I talked
- 37:52Speaker 5: a little bit about Matthew earlier, but then you know,
- 37:55Speaker 5: you watch Brad on the ice when you play against
- 37:57Speaker 5: him and you can't stand him. But that is but
- 38:03Speaker 5: it's real, it's it's not it's how he is. It's NonStop,
- 38:07Speaker 5: it's all the time, and it's wonderful. And I think
- 38:10Speaker 5: we all have friends like that. Maybe we don't play
- 38:13Speaker 5: in the NHL, but there's that one guy who was
- 38:15Speaker 5: just has energy like where does he get it? And
- 38:18Speaker 5: so that's really helped our team on top of what
- 38:22Speaker 5: a special hockey player he is.
- 38:25Speaker 3: And you get you get a bunch on that team
- 38:27Speaker 3: in Florida, you know, Sam Bennett being one of them.
- 38:29Speaker 3: You know, my last one for me is you know
- 38:31Speaker 3: him being left off the roster for Team Canada. But
- 38:34Speaker 3: I mean with the Canend's schedule, you never know what
- 38:36Speaker 3: can happen with injuries and stuff like that. But as
- 38:40Speaker 3: somebody that's working with Team USA, do you have to
- 38:42Speaker 3: field calls from the other gms around the you know,
- 38:45Speaker 3: the other countries and is that how do those conversations go?
- 38:48Speaker 3: Because they calling you like how's he looking, how's he feeling?
- 38:51Speaker 3: Do you have to disclose kind of all the information
- 38:53Speaker 3: if they contact you.
- 38:55Speaker 5: I don't know what you have to do. I certainly would,
- 38:58Speaker 5: and I think, look, there is is obviously hippa, and
- 39:05Speaker 5: there is information that you have to keep tight, and
- 39:08Speaker 5: there's there's legal and professional guidelines and morality. At the
- 39:13Speaker 5: same time, you know, we're all in the same sport
- 39:16Speaker 5: our Our Olympics is a celebration for all of us
- 39:22Speaker 5: of this wonderful game. So I think just being helpful
- 39:25Speaker 5: and being a good neighbor wherever we can, and pretty much,
- 39:29Speaker 5: you know, having having done the World Championships before, Uh,
- 39:32Speaker 5: certainly that's how every general manager treated me. So yeah,
- 39:38Speaker 5: it's it's a it's a hard process, but I think
- 39:43Speaker 5: overall it'll work out for everyone in the end.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Hey, Bill, I just had one for you as well.
- 39:50Speaker 6: We've mentioned three guys who you brought to Florida, and
- 39:52Speaker 6: Bennett Marshaw and Kit Chuck.
- 39:55Speaker 2: They all have that same kind of quality.
- 39:58Speaker 6: Call them pests, call them agitators, call them whatever you
- 40:00Speaker 6: want to call them. But is that a quality that
- 40:03Speaker 6: when you got to Florida you identified as something you
- 40:06Speaker 6: specifically wanted to bring to that team.
- 40:11Speaker 5: If I reflect back when we first got here, it
- 40:14Speaker 5: seems like decades ago. The compete, the love of the
- 40:19Speaker 5: game and the compete where that was paramount. So you know,
- 40:28Speaker 5: we we brought other guys. Sam Reinhard, I wouldn't call
- 40:31Speaker 5: him a past unless you don't like to get scored on.
- 40:34Speaker 5: But so different types of players who might fit, but
- 40:39Speaker 5: all who who you know, we had hoped would compete.
- 40:44Speaker 5: That was the That was the biggest thing, more than
- 40:47Speaker 5: the sort of pest label. I think that's just an
- 40:52Speaker 5: added dimension to those three guys.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Still Kim Winnings manager Bill Sedo obviously having another fantastic
- 40:59Speaker 1: here the Panthers looking ahead to Timyo say, in the Olympics,
- 41:01Speaker 1: and I gotta commend you, Bille. I was there in
- 41:03Speaker 1: Florida for six have been weekend and incredibly on that Saturday,
- 41:07Speaker 1: you guys won six seven seven six was the final.
- 41:10Speaker 2: So that I don't know how you did it.
- 41:13Speaker 5: My kids they were the ones giving it to me
- 41:15Speaker 5: about it, And I did an ESPN one opening night
- 41:18Speaker 5: it wasn't startup Wizard Emily Kaplan and she said the
- 41:22Speaker 5: question was you know you want to I don't you
- 41:25Speaker 5: think you can win cups? Or something like that. I said,
- 41:27Speaker 5: I don't know if I think about that, but if
- 41:29Speaker 5: I'm gonna, I mean, I want to win. Six seven
- 41:34Speaker 5: some of those some of those are awesome. The kids
- 41:37Speaker 5: have so much fun. Oh, I think that's I think
- 41:40Speaker 5: that's over now. I've been told.
- 41:42Speaker 4: I hope it is.
- 41:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I've been I've been told I'm not cool. And
- 41:47Speaker 5: so we got to wait for the next one.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Yeah, six seven officially dead, but the Panthers alive and well, Bill,
- 41:53Speaker 2: thanks so much of the time, Good.
- 41:54Speaker 5: Luck, Thanks guys, mm hmm, thanks.
- 42:04Speaker 2: What's to Bills?
- 42:05Speaker 1: Great stuff there as far as Cinophile and sixties concerned.
- 42:07Speaker 1: A Golden Globes recap. My favorite speech in the night,
- 42:10Speaker 1: the great jut Apatow. I love when he presented Best
- 42:13Speaker 1: Director because, as he said, if you're presenting this a war,
- 42:15Speaker 1: clearly you're as good as anybody here as far as
- 42:17Speaker 1: directors are concerned. Tugue in cheek and he's like, you know,
- 42:20Speaker 1: I know where to put the lenses and stuff. I'm
- 42:22Speaker 1: clearly on a part with Steven Spielberg. He then mentioned,
- 42:25Speaker 1: he goes, I've been snubbing the Golden Globes. I've even
- 42:27Speaker 1: here since train Wreck lost ten years ago. The film
- 42:29Speaker 1: I directed, starring Amy Schumer. It lost to the Martian.
- 42:33Speaker 1: He's like noted comedic genius Ridley Scott who made such
- 42:36Speaker 1: really funny movies and Alien and Blade Runner. He's like, yeah,
- 42:41Speaker 1: one of the great comedic directors of our time. I
- 42:43Speaker 1: guess I've come back the Gold Globes after this appatow
- 42:45Speaker 1: is the best overall. Great night for Paul Thomas Anderson.
- 42:49Speaker 1: I messed this for an eleven time Hoscar onmity. He's
- 42:51Speaker 1: never won. He's hitting everything. Now we have a flowers
- 42:54Speaker 1: segment coming up, potentially sponsored by one hundred flowers dot Com.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Everyone's giving their flowers to pt Anderson At the Globes.
- 42:59Speaker 1: He wins for Best Screenplay, Best Director. One batt left
- 43:02Speaker 1: on their wins' Best Picture. I spilled that timidates shallow
- 43:05Speaker 1: May wins for Best Actress, Best Actress.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Jesse Buckley. I got my wife to watch Hamden. She
- 43:09Speaker 2: loved it.
- 43:10Speaker 1: I knew she would, and Buckley deservedly wins Best Actress.
- 43:12Speaker 1: So good race now actually for the Oscars with her
- 43:15Speaker 1: and Rose Byrne. Great title Tuttle the year. If I
- 43:18Speaker 1: had legs, I'd kick you because she also won Best
- 43:20Speaker 1: Actress that'll be a fun race. Oscar Races by the way,
- 43:22Speaker 1: coming out next Thursday. Your thoughts, jd Any aspect of
- 43:25Speaker 1: the globes, I.
- 43:28Speaker 3: Saw what I just saw the Rock just you know,
- 43:30Speaker 3: the Rock didn't win, So yeah, not surprised there, but
- 43:34Speaker 3: Asmashic he was. But he had a nice little thing
- 43:36Speaker 3: on his Instagram about his daughter the gift they gave
- 43:39Speaker 3: him with like, you know, little notes every day for
- 43:42Speaker 3: him to take and you know, stuff that's very wholesome,
- 43:45Speaker 3: and he kind of read it to the group being like,
- 43:47Speaker 3: you know, we're all winners still and being grateful and
- 43:50Speaker 3: stuff like that.
- 43:51Speaker 4: So that was cool. Uh, you know, Chala may ye.
- 43:55Speaker 2: I'm gonna see Marty Supreme Tale. I'm gonna watch it twice.
- 43:58Speaker 2: You have to go.
- 43:59Speaker 4: I have to go. Maybe today. How's the hosting and
- 44:01Speaker 4: all that with Nikki?
- 44:03Speaker 2: I was watching football. I didn't see whuch the hosting tow
- 44:05Speaker 2: Can you speak to that? I was pissed the Eagles
- 44:06Speaker 2: loss and I watched by the charge that it was
- 44:08Speaker 2: much real. I went and got a bagel, go ahead,
- 44:09Speaker 2: some smoke.
- 44:10Speaker 6: I just wasn't watching. I was kind of sitting in
- 44:13Speaker 6: and out. I came in and out while my wife
- 44:15Speaker 6: was watching.
- 44:16Speaker 2: She thought she was funny. I thought it was funny
- 44:18Speaker 2: how some.
- 44:19Speaker 6: Of those winners had to walk pretty far to get
- 44:22Speaker 6: onto that stage. It was kind of amusing to see
- 44:24Speaker 6: them navigate their way to the stage, and the awards
- 44:27Speaker 6: looked much bigger. I remember feeling like the Golden goats
- 44:29Speaker 6: were very small, and now they look like freaking baseball
- 44:32Speaker 6: bats out there.
- 44:32Speaker 4: So well did we talk about all?
- 44:35Speaker 3: Speaking of baseball bats, the Hudson Williams interview with Gail King,
- 44:39Speaker 3: when he absolutely stunned her nod she wanted to take a.
- 44:43Speaker 4: Rocket ship to the moon.
- 44:45Speaker 3: When he was like, the show's like it's like we're jizzing,
- 44:49Speaker 3: and I'm like, oh, you gotta go watch it.
- 44:51Speaker 4: It's it's hilarious.
- 44:53Speaker 3: He talked of jizz to Gail King, and Gail King's
- 44:57Speaker 3: Gail King was as pale as me and all the
- 45:02Speaker 3: blood ran from her face.
- 45:05Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely interview, she.
- 45:07Speaker 2: Was like, oh my god.
- 45:08Speaker 4: She's like, I don't know about all that, but it's
- 45:10Speaker 4: a great show.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Speaking of entertainment, the new Young Blood trailer coming down.
- 45:17Speaker 1: We've said this before. I was lobbying to try to
- 45:18Speaker 1: get Jad to play like a virulent racist because it's
- 45:21Speaker 1: an all black cast, But how can you forget the
- 45:23Speaker 1: nineteen eighty six original starring Rob Lowe is Dean Youngblood
- 45:27Speaker 1: along side a young Patrick Swayzee and Canna Reeves. Now
- 45:29Speaker 1: we got our first look Ashton James playing young Blood.
- 45:32Speaker 1: I love Blair Underwood veteran actor Blair Underwood playing his father.
- 45:35Speaker 1: And the hockey scenes coordinated by Chris Nelson The Devil's
- 45:38Speaker 1: Draft Picko previously worked on Miracle and Mighty Ducks Game Changers.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Jad, you're the athlete, what do you think of the trailer?
- 45:44Speaker 4: I mean the guy.
- 45:45Speaker 3: They can all skate, Ashton James Loo look good in
- 45:49Speaker 3: the trailer, and you know the hardest thing about doing
- 45:53Speaker 3: anything hockey related is how you need the cameraman to
- 45:56Speaker 3: be able to operate cameras on skates moving the way
- 46:00Speaker 3: they shoot it is the way that's kind of missed
- 46:03Speaker 3: in the past. So you know, I was kind of
- 46:06Speaker 3: looking at that a lot of like on the ice views,
- 46:08Speaker 3: I think was really good. But also it's that's always
- 46:11Speaker 3: the thing with with hockey and hockey movies in general,
- 46:15Speaker 3: is I want to see all the guys be good skaters,
- 46:18Speaker 3: like you want guys to be talented, you know, athletes
- 46:22Speaker 3: and hockey players, you know, and it's like bring in
- 46:24Speaker 3: old veteran guys and film them the right way and
- 46:27Speaker 3: also make sure your camera guys can all skate. So
- 46:29Speaker 3: it's like you want to really embody what.
- 46:31Speaker 4: Hockey is it.
- 46:32Speaker 3: It's fast paced, it's quick cuts and stuff like that.
- 46:34Speaker 3: So I just always, you know, if I'm putting on
- 46:36Speaker 3: my director lens, it's always something I look for.
- 46:40Speaker 4: When I'm watching a hockey movie.
- 46:43Speaker 3: Hockey show, you know, obviously not heated rivalry because it's
- 46:47Speaker 3: not really hockey related, but but it's it's there is
- 46:50Speaker 3: hockey elements. And they did show some good cuts which
- 46:53Speaker 3: I like. Even though the players, the main characters I
- 46:56Speaker 3: don't think are great skaters. They do a good job
- 46:59Speaker 3: of kaye hiding that. But this one, Ashton James, looks fantastic.
- 47:02Speaker 3: Looks like he you know, plays in a lower league
- 47:05Speaker 3: and East Coast or something like that and can kind
- 47:08Speaker 3: of move and grove, so I like it.
- 47:09Speaker 2: Tell your thoughts on the trailer. I thought it looked good.
- 47:13Speaker 2: I thought it looked really good.
- 47:14Speaker 6: I you know, I don't know what how wide the
- 47:17Speaker 6: distribution will be for this thing.
- 47:18Speaker 2: But I'm definitely curious to check it out.
- 47:20Speaker 6: And actually, you know, we're working to get some people
- 47:22Speaker 6: from the film on the on the podcast.
- 47:24Speaker 2: And interesting note from the publicity team. They the scenes.
- 47:28Speaker 6: The hockey scenes were coordinated by Chris Nelson, who previously
- 47:32Speaker 6: worked on Miracle and Mighty Ducks Game Changers.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Are you hearing an echo?
- 47:38Speaker 4: Yeah? Is there an echo? Hello? Hello? No, ad net.
- 47:44Speaker 2: He's just been a smart as.
- 47:47Speaker 4: We'll cut that out. No, keep that keep going, but
- 47:51Speaker 4: I will I'm not done.
- 47:52Speaker 3: It again, Chris Nelson? What is Where's Chris Salvin? He's
- 47:55Speaker 3: the Devil's draft pick.
- 47:56Speaker 2: Devil's draft pick.
- 47:57Speaker 7: And and I was going to say in nineteen ninety
- 48:02Speaker 7: he won a national championshi ship at the University of Wisconsin,
- 48:06Speaker 7: becoming the first black hockey player to win an NCAA
- 48:10Speaker 7: national championship.
- 48:11Speaker 4: That's a great tibut.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Now, how did you let me finish what I was saying?
- 48:15Speaker 4: Lead with that?
- 48:17Speaker 2: We would have got to that anyways, there it is.
- 48:21Speaker 4: I ask you you got to keep that any checked
- 48:25Speaker 4: with it.
- 48:25Speaker 3: If we had if we had video capabilities, that would
- 48:28Speaker 3: go that would go viral.
- 48:29Speaker 6: Well, you had echo before on your mic and That's
- 48:32Speaker 6: why I was wondering if you know we we did
- 48:34Speaker 6: have an echo.
- 48:35Speaker 2: I thought that's what sold the joke what JD said.
- 48:37Speaker 1: It was like, oh, there might be an echo, like
- 48:39Speaker 1: he actually watching you on video.
- 48:42Speaker 4: If we had a video element on YouTube like YouTube shorts.
- 48:44Speaker 4: If you're going like.
- 48:45Speaker 2: YouTube shorts, would be great. Do you think that can
- 48:47Speaker 2: happen for the podcast?

- 50:07Speaker 1: selection that playing in the Olympics is a dream he
- 50:09Speaker 1: shared with his dad, Brian, who passed unexpectedly on Thanksgiving.
- 50:13Speaker 1: And Lastly, the lightning can't be stopped to one shootout
- 50:15Speaker 1: winning Pittsburgh eleventh straight victory. That ties the longest streak
- 50:18Speaker 1: in franchise history, longest win streak in the NHL this season,
- 50:22Speaker 1: and it makes the lightning right now JD. The favorites
- 50:24Speaker 1: in the Eastern Conference.

- 50:33Speaker 3: talking about Tampa historically, I'll just touch quickly on all
- 50:35Speaker 3: of it.
- 50:35Speaker 4: I mean, Conor.
- 50:36Speaker 3: McDavid's a freak, fucking freak. Uh, he doesn't even he
- 50:40Speaker 3: should have his own league by himself. Him and Nathan McKinnon.
- 50:42Speaker 3: Just play one on one and refilm it and broadcast
- 50:44Speaker 3: it live, no goalies.
- 50:46Speaker 4: Just then one on one.
- 50:48Speaker 3: The Clayton Keller one that's, you know, heart wrenching and
- 50:51Speaker 3: tough to listen to. He's a close friend and got
- 50:54Speaker 3: to see him when he was in New York. He
- 50:55Speaker 3: give them a hug and just a great kid, so,
- 50:58Speaker 3: you know, well deserved, and you know, I'm sure his
- 51:01Speaker 3: dad's smiling and and really just so proud of him
- 51:05Speaker 3: and what he's done and his strength and through all this.
- 51:07Speaker 3: So and then you know, thirdly, the Tampa Bay lightning.
- 51:11Speaker 3: This is if not for the Florida Panthers. I mean
- 51:16Speaker 3: this team would had could have won the last two years. Also,
- 51:19Speaker 3: so this team is cooking again. They find a way
- 51:22Speaker 3: every single year. It seems like the hockey is well.
- 51:26Speaker 3: Florida is the state of hockey. It has been and
- 51:30Speaker 3: it has reigned supreme in the East. That's for damn
- 51:33Speaker 3: fucking sure. So good for them. And then my lastly,
- 51:36Speaker 3: the Rose amongst the Thorns. You guys want a segment,
- 51:38Speaker 3: will give you a segment. This is Chasin emerged with
- 51:41Speaker 3: his Rose amongst the thorns, Leon Dreysidel against the Nashville

- 51:51Speaker 3: he has forty nine points, twenty seven goals and twenty
- 51:55Speaker 3: two assists in twenty career games against the NASA repetters.
- 52:00Speaker 3: That is fucking insanity. He had a goal and two

- 52:25Speaker 1: down the line.
- 52:26Speaker 2: But I want to thank once again Bill Zido, Stanley
- 52:28Speaker 2: Cup winning gem of the Panthers.
- 52:30Speaker 1: He's obviously one of the kings of the hockey world.
- 52:33Speaker 1: And the pregnant pause. No one loves a pregnant pause
- 52:35Speaker 1: like Bill Zedo. Great stuff from moving the entire crew.
