- 0:15evan: Hello and welcome to Left of the Projector. I'm your host, Evan,
- 0:18evan: back again with another film discussion from the left.
- 0:21evan: You can follow the show at leftoftheprojector.com, as well as leave a rating.
- 0:26evan: It would be much appreciated.
- 0:28evan: This week on the show, I have the hosts of Altmania. I have Este and Ryan back
- 0:34evan: again. Thank you for being here today.
- 0:36Track 3: Hello.
- 0:37Track 2: Thank you.
- 0:38evan: Yes.
- 0:39Track 2: Yeah, it's a treat. Yeah, we're delighted. Thank you.
- 0:42Track 3: You have to be back in the projection room, the booth. I don't know if you call it that.
- 0:48evan: No, that actually is, that sounds, that's catchy. Back in the projection room.
- 0:52evan: Like that's where you would.
- 0:52Track 3: Back in the booth.
- 0:53evan: Back in the booth. But yeah, so we were, I asked you to come on and we were
- 0:59evan: talking about like summer movies.
- 1:00evan: I don't know exactly, maybe I just was just throwing movies like at the, in the wind.
- 1:05Track 2: Yeah.
- 1:05evan: And we landed on, as you can tell, we're discussing Wet Hot American Summer,
- 1:10evan: which was released in 2001, directed by David Wayne.
- 1:15evan: It has, I'm not going to read the entire cast because I'll be here for like five minutes.
- 1:19evan: You're reading how many people are in this film, but it's a stacked cast and
- 1:23evan: so I guess I'm just curious, well, actually before we even talk about the film,
- 1:27evan: remind everyone about Altmania, maybe what you're doing now on the show.
- 1:32Track 3: Yeah, yeah, Altmania. We're in Demi mode right now, so our show is ostensibly,
- 1:39Track 3: it's about the films of Robert Altman.
- 1:40Track 3: as we say you know we talk about them in their context how
- 1:44Track 3: they speak to today um and we
- 1:47Track 3: finished up altman just about a year ago now and i think when we were last on
- 1:51Track 3: we were just about to start on our alan rudolph series who was like a friend
- 1:55Track 3: and like protege of altman we've finished that since and we are now like just
- 2:01Track 3: getting started on our uh series looking at the films of jonathan Demme,
- 2:05Track 3: who through an interview that we just did with the son of Robert Altman and
- 2:10Track 3: like frequent camera operator,
- 2:12Track 3: found out that the two of them actually were good friends.
- 2:15Track 3: And so kind of through coincidence right before we started, there was a connection.
- 2:20Track 2: We couldn't really find anything linking them in our research,
- 2:23Track 2: but we were talking to one of his kids, Robert Reed Altman.
- 2:26Track 2: And yeah, he was like, oh, they were really good friends. And we were like, oh, awesome.
- 2:30Track 3: Yeah, perfect.
- 2:31evan: It's funny that they never came up anywhere.
- 2:33Track 3: We just kind of figured he fit the vibe. I know.
- 2:35Track 2: Yeah.
- 2:36Track 3: Like we already are seeing a lot of similarities and stuff.
- 2:39Track 3: Like a film we just talked about, Citizens Band, felt very Altman-like.
- 2:44Track 3: Like it feels like we're right at home.
- 2:47evan: I was looking at his films and I've embarrassingly have not seen a ton of them, actually.
- 2:54evan: I feel like I've seen like the big ones, you know, Manchurian,
- 2:57evan: Canada, Philadelphia, Silence of the Lambs.
- 2:59evan: I think I saw Beloved. But a lot of that I have not seen.
- 3:03Track 2: Yeah, that was mostly the same with me, too. Like I had seen KGT and then like all the big ones.
- 3:08Track 2: And it was a similar thing like going into Rudolph. Like I think we had both
- 3:12Track 2: only seen one of his films.
- 3:13Track 2: But that's kind of part of the fun of it is like exploring and discovering stuff as we go along.
- 3:18Track 2: I feel like if we kind of knew everything that way, like it wouldn't be as fun.
- 3:22Track 2: Yeah, it's it's sort of like in our research. We're like, oh,
- 3:25Track 2: look at this cool thing we found or like Citizens Band.
- 3:28Track 2: It literally is. There was one article where they described it as Nashville-esque,
- 3:32Track 2: and it literally is like a rare Nashville-esque 70s ensemble comedy that most
- 3:39Track 2: people, including myself, had never really heard of.
- 3:42Track 2: And the cast is—it's really funny, especially for a film from almost 50 years
- 3:46Track 2: ago. It holds up pretty well.
- 3:48evan: Yeah, I'm going to have to— Yeah.
- 3:49Track 3: It's been a blast. And he started out with the Roger Corman kind of part of
- 3:53Track 3: Hollywood, which we hadn't really ever gotten into.
- 3:56Track 3: So that's been super fun to look at those exploitations.
- 3:59evan: Is KHT his first film?
- 4:00Track 3: Ooh.
- 4:01Track 2: He has like four firsts.
- 4:02evan: We've been talking about this.
- 4:04Track 2: He has the most first films of any director we've done so far.
- 4:07Track 2: At least three, I think. Maybe four.
- 4:09Track 3: Yeah, he had started out writing, and then I believe KHT was his first director.
- 4:14evan: Okay, so his first director.
- 4:14Track 2: Yeah.
- 4:15Track 3: It was kind of a weird, like, climbing the ladder until he graduated the Corman
- 4:19Track 3: School, which is where we are, like, right now on the show.
- 4:24Track 3: We're about to do a Columbo episode that he directed, so that'll be really fun. Got a Columbo.
- 4:29evan: Yeah.
- 4:29Track 2: Citizens band didn't do so well so he's sort of licking his wounds and going
- 4:34Track 2: to the slums of television.
- 4:36evan: When it comes when it came
- 4:38evan: to wet hot american summer i think you both had seen it
- 4:41evan: obviously seen it before did you have like uh
- 4:44evan: like what's your maybe i don't know history of the film sounds like uh sound
- 4:49evan: maybe too much but just like yeah do you remember the first time you saw it
- 4:53evan: or like do you have a memory of it it seems like this uh for me it's like this
- 4:57evan: trapped in movie that kind of like trapped in time where i don't know do.
- 5:02Track 2: You want to go first.
- 5:02Track 3: Yeah yeah well i think i don't
- 5:06Track 3: remember when i first saw this movie honestly i feel like
- 5:09Track 3: i've always just like have seen the movie like yeah it's weird i maybe it's
- 5:14Track 3: so long ago i went and dug out because i had this like stella dvd i think i
- 5:18Track 3: got this like in high school like i i've always really liked david wayne and
- 5:23Track 3: like uh i don't know that him and like michael sowelter and uh he's.
- 5:27Track 2: My favorite wayne's brother.
- 5:28Track 3: David oh yeah yeah my my username
- 5:31Track 3: right now is fountains of wayne with an eye that's my
- 5:34Track 3: bit um and then yeah i was at the blu-ray here
- 5:37Track 3: too that i it's very nice it's very nice blu-ray um yeah i don't know yeah i
- 5:41Track 3: think maybe i saw role models or something like and but i'd seen stella on comedy
- 5:47Track 3: central and like i don't know i got around to it at some point but yeah i mean
- 5:51Track 3: And I've always really liked it. And it's really funny to see, especially like,
- 5:55Track 3: i don't know people like bradley cooper who like i think just not long before
- 5:59Track 3: this he was like on like inside the actor's studio being like i'm gonna be a
- 6:03Track 3: big actor one day talk to james lipton or whatever.
- 6:07Track 2: You could see him in the crowd of an inside the
- 6:09Track 2: actor's studio and also there's a rare like taped performance
- 6:13Track 2: of ucb like they uh perform they taped
- 6:16Track 2: themselves doing a herald and it's like uh amy poehler
- 6:19Track 2: and uh whatever ian edwards a bunch of other people um but
- 6:22Track 2: yeah and so um and you can see him in the crowd of
- 6:25Track 2: that as well yeah yeah
- 6:28Track 2: i went to high school
- 6:31Track 2: from like 2002 to 2006 basically and
- 6:35Track 2: i remember i had a friend in high school daniel who like showed me this movie
- 6:38Track 2: so it would have only been out for a few years which makes sense because it
- 6:43Track 2: was clearly a movie that like not a lot of people went to see when it like originally
- 6:48Track 2: came out which is a shame i i mentioned this this is my most logged film on letterbox,
- 6:54Track 2: it was my fifth log which like doesn't include all the times i watched it pre-2019
- 7:00Track 2: so yeah and i i i uh i re-watched the prequel series as well and i started watching
- 7:08Track 2: the 10 years later uh miniseries on netflix they're pretty good i.
- 7:12evan: Was actually surprised when they came out like i'm not having like very high
- 7:16evan: expectations, but kind of surprised by them.
- 7:18evan: I think I was trying to think about when I had seen it the first time.
- 7:21evan: And my memory that I have is in college, someone I knew had a bunch of VHS tapes
- 7:27evan: of the state and I had never heard of it because this,
- 7:30evan: that was, I was way too young, I think, to have watched it when it was on TV
- 7:33evan: and like, oh, let's watch these VHSs of the state. I'm like,
- 7:36evan: all right, I've never heard of the show.
- 7:37evan: And then I remember buying it on iTunes, like back when people would buy,
- 7:40evan: you know, movies on iTunes and shows, not the whole series, Cause each one was
- 7:44evan: like a buck or two. So I bought the first, I don't know,
- 7:47evan: four episodes or something. I think there's only maybe 25 at most of them.
- 7:51evan: And thinking like, oh, like, this is cool. Like, what else did he do?
- 7:55evan: And then that led me to, oh, well, he did what on American summer,
- 7:57evan: which you mentioned was a bomb.
- 7:59evan: It was only made $300,000 on a just under $2 million budget.
- 8:04evan: So total, total bomb out, especially given how many just star current stars are in this film now.
- 8:11evan: And yeah, and I just always been, I don't, I don't think i had a letterboxd
- 8:16evan: that early but i would imagine this would be at least i probably watch at least
- 8:20evan: i've watched it three times in the last month but i probably watch it you know.
- 8:24Track 2: Yeah many.
- 8:25evan: Many times so it's uh.
- 8:26Track 3: One thing i really loved about the prequel series was just the bit of like they
- 8:33Track 3: are all supposed to be the same age they are in the original.
- 8:35Track 2: Yeah commitment.
- 8:36Track 3: To that especially michael showalter who just looks.
- 8:39Track 2: Like michael showalter one of the bravest on-camera
- 8:42Track 2: performances i've ever seen like does not look
- 8:45Track 2: i mean yeah i mean because not
- 8:48Track 2: only the wig and like the clothes but also then he puts on
- 8:51Track 2: the choker and then like the fork pie hat looking like but
- 8:54Track 2: and then there were just like long cakes of him just like looking like
- 8:57Track 2: absolute i'll just say very funny looking right
- 9:00Track 2: but yeah it's it's it's certainly a comfort movie
- 9:03Track 2: for me uh like it feels like
- 9:06Track 2: it's just like a go-to i can laugh and yeah like
- 9:09Track 2: the the thing about like the pre people i kind
- 9:12Track 2: of like took my time before i got to them because i didn't want
- 9:15Track 2: to like i don't know i have such fond memories of the original film but it's
- 9:18Track 2: the thing about i was going to mention um the seinfeld episodes whenever like
- 9:23Track 2: they have jerry stiller just play like a young version of himself and it's just
- 9:28Track 2: him in fatigues with all these young guys that's it's a great bit yeah it's super funny yeah.
- 9:32Track 3: It never gets old yeah i wanted to know did you guys go to summer camp growing
- 9:36Track 3: up i was i was curious about this because i never did.
- 9:39evan: So i did go to summer camp for for
- 9:42evan: like a few years and that was
- 9:45evan: sort of this is one of the things i was looking at to go
- 9:48evan: to summer camp and the thing that i was thinking about was when i
- 9:51evan: was i don't know like 13 or something you would see your
- 9:54evan: counselor would be what 17 at most like five years
- 9:57evan: older than you and the way that i remember them as being
- 10:00evan: just like super old people like they're just like really old
- 10:03evan: adults somehow but so in a way it almost kind of like makes sense in my mind
- 10:09evan: the way i like perceive the fact that they're what they're 25 playing you know
- 10:13evan: 17 year olds or 16 year olds or whatever it is i just think of it as like that's
- 10:18evan: how the kids looked at them almost like.
- 10:21Track 2: They saw them as.
- 10:22evan: These like really old people and obviously it's still just a funny bit and joke
- 10:27evan: but that's just kind of the way i think of it in my brain.
- 10:29Track 2: I never went to camp but i like i would play sports in the summer and i did
- 10:33Track 2: go to like golf camp but it wasn't like an overnight like I wouldn't stay there
- 10:37Track 2: it was just like a couple summers maybe three summers I would just go to this golf course.
- 10:42Track 3: During the day play.
- 10:43Track 2: Golf all day yeah so i i suck i haven't played in forever but i'll always have
- 10:47Track 2: a competent swing but yeah no summer camp for me i think my mom was like too scared you know.
- 10:52Track 3: Yeah i grew up in the pacific northwest and like there's got to be summer camps
- 10:58Track 3: around here but yeah it was just never a thing uh for anyone i knew like my
- 11:02Track 3: sister went to one with a friend,
- 11:05Track 3: and i think they even went to like idaho or something they didn't even stay
- 11:08Track 3: in washington I think it's like a Northeastern thing.
- 11:12evan: I mean, I'm not saying that there's no camps in the country,
- 11:14evan: but it feels like this, like this takes place in Maine, but they film it in
- 11:18evan: Maine or whatever. It takes place in Maine.
- 11:19evan: And so, I don't know, maybe that's just kind of the, it's more of a thing. I don't know.
- 11:24Track 3: Two people that I know that like are friends of mine that went to summer camp.
- 11:28Track 3: I hope this isn't like offensive, but they're both Jewish and they're both from
- 11:33Track 3: other states. So I don't know if it's like a common thing in like Jewish families, but yeah.
- 11:38Track 2: I was going to say, like, yeah, I'm lucky because I grew up in Texas.
- 11:41Track 2: So I'm lucky because if I did ever go to a quote unquote summer camp,
- 11:45Track 2: it probably would have been like heavily religious. And like, right.
- 11:48Track 2: I would have been like running away or vacation Bible school.
- 11:51Track 3: Yeah.
- 11:52Track 2: Yeah. And thankfully, I never had to was submitted to anything like that.
- 11:57evan: One interesting, too, that I was thinking about because I watched the documentary,
- 12:01evan: which is basically just behind the scenes footage of what they recorded film.
- 12:05evan: There was some interviews and some funny, really funny stuff. like
- 12:07evan: they're all drunk pretty much the entire time and but
- 12:10evan: i was thinking about like wayne went to like a jewish summer camp
- 12:13evan: and a lot of these were scenes and like things
- 12:16evan: that actually happened to him i was actually i said i don't know if i believe all
- 12:19evan: of that but that's what he says like the van
- 12:23evan: crashing apparently he actually did that like he crashed the
- 12:25evan: van coming back to see a girl at camp but i
- 12:28evan: was thinking it's like he could have made the camp be like a jewish camp but
- 12:31evan: he decided to just kind of it just they like have the joke later when junior
- 12:35evan: graffalo is like naming all the jewish kids who are going to get picked up or
- 12:38evan: whatever like david ben goryan yeah but like he like they made it just be just
- 12:42evan: like a camp you know like there is no right just that's which.
- 12:46Track 2: They um they yeah i think it's more like a
- 12:49Track 2: cultural thing like they mentioned in the
- 12:51Track 2: prequel there's like because in the prequel there's a
- 12:55Track 2: like a anglo there's like a waspy sort of
- 12:58Track 2: like high you know like a higher class camp
- 13:01Track 2: like next door uh it's and so
- 13:04Track 2: like so it's like all the rich kids or whatever and so there's
- 13:07Track 2: like a rivalry um and they they like explicitly make
- 13:10Track 2: a joke about it in that and i was gonna say like
- 13:13Track 2: because you mentioned on the doc like if is
- 13:16Track 2: david wayne is i actually like google that before you even put that in the doc
- 13:20Track 2: right because like and you can cut that out or whatever or you can leave it
- 13:24Track 2: in but i was just gonna say because so i didn't find him saying anything which
- 13:28Track 2: in and of itself you know i feel like by this point if you hadn't said anything
- 13:31Track 2: like that in itself is kind of a statement but um.
- 13:35Track 2: I did find okay because like in the prequel there's
- 13:38Track 2: David Wayne actually plays a character who's like an Israeli
- 13:41Track 2: guy and he's an absolute creep like
- 13:44Track 2: his storyline is literally cooking David show up
- 13:47Track 2: here and it's so funny because so I googled that
- 13:51Track 2: or I googled like David later and I
- 13:54Track 2: found this like post this blog from like a
- 13:57Track 2: site called like the tablet or something and it was a guy basically saying that
- 14:00Track 2: like oh yeah this is a very like you know you can it was like whatever like
- 14:04Track 2: a very of a jewish uh summer camp or whatever but he was like oh and that like
- 14:09Track 2: israeli character he's so cool like i love that guy like we all we all loved
- 14:13Track 2: him and i was like wow that is so telling we.
- 14:16Track 3: All identified with this.
- 14:18Track 2: Like man that guy was so cool we wanted to be him so bad i'm like i also.
- 14:23evan: Could not find anything you know and one way or the other at all about it the
- 14:27evan: only thing that i was going to say is so i saw the film um the 10 that came out i think in like 2007,
- 14:36evan: in washington dc at the jcc and it was like a screening and then he actually
- 14:41evan: like answered due to q a afterwards and i actually had like i knew i had gone
- 14:45evan: to see it but i sort of hadn't,
- 14:47evan: remembered like the whole q a about it and nothing came up about israel at all
- 14:52evan: or anything It was just simply questions about the film, like, you know, totally.
- 14:56evan: So my guess is if he is one, I don't know it. So cool.
- 15:02evan: I don't know. I don't know. I don't mean that in like a derogatory sense.
- 15:05evan: Just like, yeah, you know, he's just, yeah.
- 15:07Track 3: Yeah. I was thinking, I was like, you know, we might hurt ourselves if we tried
- 15:12Track 3: to find a political angle in this movie.
- 15:15Track 3: But I think it does come out of like a specific middle class America,
- 15:21Track 3: like Gen X kind of upbringing.
- 15:24Track 3: And because so much of the script is based on all of their experiences,
- 15:27Track 3: like this kind of common experience or whatever.
- 15:30Track 3: Or, I don't know, maybe, you know, it's a snapshot a little bit of,
- 15:35Track 3: like, maybe a particular time of America or, like, whether it was real or not,
- 15:39Track 3: like, or just something in the movies.
- 15:40Track 3: But, like, I do think it's funny that the original plan for this movie was to
- 15:45Track 3: be entirely improvised, I think, based on an outline.
- 15:48Track 3: And that was inspired by Sam Seder's short film, Who's the Caboose?
- 15:52evan: Yeah.
- 15:52Track 3: And I'm like, well, Sam Seder is now, like, a big, like, left-wing,
- 15:55Track 3: you know, he does majority report. Yeah.
- 15:58Track 2: Yeah you.
- 15:58Track 3: Know there's like the the little bit of a connection there.
- 16:02Track 2: There's also a joke in like the prequel where
- 16:05Track 2: they like do jigswords with a shofars so
- 16:08Track 2: like i don't think he has any reverence for his religion i
- 16:11Track 2: think if he get because i mean we talked about that like how hard
- 16:14Track 2: it would be to like parse out politics of this but i was going to
- 16:16Track 2: joke any movie with american in the title is inherently
- 16:19Track 2: like very political um but also like
- 16:22Track 2: i do think like i don't know i feel like the way the fact
- 16:25Track 2: that this movie got made it is very like i don't
- 16:28Track 2: know it's it's emblematic of that gen xer sort
- 16:31Track 2: of like uh thing of like checking out which i
- 16:34Track 2: think can apply to like all generations post war but this
- 16:36Track 2: like sort of uh you know slacker thing of like oh
- 16:39Track 2: i'm not even gonna pay attention or mention politics i'm just gonna completely
- 16:43Track 2: disappear into the world of like culture or whatever and then like this is the
- 16:47Track 2: product which is like really funny in a movie that i love but also it has like
- 16:50Track 2: yeah there's no weight to it like politically or i don't know if it'll if it's
- 16:54Track 2: like remembered or you know if people like care about it so much as time goes by it's.
- 17:00evan: Interesting you mentioned that
- 17:01evan: if it has the word american and it like has some inherent you know even.
- 17:05Track 2: If unintentional.
- 17:06evan: Like politics i saw on imdb i don't know if this is a joke and they came up
- 17:10evan: with this later but there's a list of like 35 other potential names that they
- 17:15evan: were thinking of of naming the movie and some of them are just.
- 17:18Track 2: Absurd like boner.
- 17:19evan: Camp america big american love wedgie like this i don't know if these were just like.
- 17:23Track 2: You know it's.
- 17:24evan: Just a joke and they had this list later on or something but to me it just felt
- 17:28evan: like they were trying to harness the experience that he had like going to camp with this.
- 17:35Track 2: Like ridiculously.
- 17:35evan: Talented cast of people who are funny and he worked with before and then on
- 17:40evan: top of that just sort of the you know it feels very much like a verge like a a,
- 17:44evan: a modern version of like meatballs or something but like in a in a in a much
- 17:48evan: different like less in a crude way but in like a in a kind of more tongue-in-cheek
- 17:53evan: than meatballs i think i don't know it's been a while since i've seen i think.
- 17:57Track 2: Yeah and i think like most substantially um there
- 18:01Track 2: if it's let's say uh i will get into it obviously later but
- 18:04Track 2: there are a couple of members of the cast who like outside of this film have
- 18:08Track 2: gotten into some interesting hobbies and activities we'll say um perhaps friendships
- 18:15Track 2: uh let's say uh h2o usage you know lawn care stuff like that uh this.
- 18:23Track 3: Movie has like what like three four different montages like scenes.
- 18:27evan: In succession.
- 18:28Track 3: Sergey eisenstein you know that's that was uh you know the hegelian dialectic
- 18:33Track 3: right like that uh represented via montage shunning narrative structure for
- 18:38Track 3: uh you know moving the action by the group so therefore this movie is a marxist yeah that's my theory.
- 18:46evan: Like i think i joke this is like probably the silliest like
- 18:50evan: most movie that i've ever like taken notes like while
- 18:53evan: watching it you know and i was thinking about it but the thing i was thinking
- 18:55evan: is they mentioned a few times in that documentary that the film was basically
- 19:00evan: just a bunch of you know individual funny scenes that just kind of were taking
- 19:04evan: place throughout the day of one day at camp and like that wayne was just good
- 19:08evan: at kind of corralling everyone, although it didn't seem like,
- 19:12evan: it seemed like the shooting was probably pretty chaotic.
- 19:15evan: They kind of maybe hinted that in that documentary, but don't outright say it.
- 19:19evan: I don't know exactly, but it just, it seemed like this, it's like the next logical
- 19:25evan: step for, you know, those other things like the state, like taking these bits
- 19:28evan: and just kind of putting them all together and just being committed to them for an hour and a half.
- 19:32Track 3: Yeah. Like there's a, there's a little bit of connecting.
- 19:34evan: Yeah.
- 19:35Track 3: Cause I listened to this in a, this Q and a with him,
- 19:38Track 3: It's like an hour long. I forget what it was. It was part of some podcast.
- 19:41Track 3: It was in like 2013 or something.
- 19:44Track 3: But yeah, he mentioned like, yeah, it is a lot of like sketches basically like
- 19:49Track 3: kind of sewn together as like character stories or whatever.
- 19:53Track 3: But like he wanted it to, he specifically, they said they studied like Nashville,
- 19:58Track 3: Altman's Nashville, which I think is kind of good.
- 20:00Track 2: And.
- 20:01Track 3: Like dazed and confused and like do the right thing.
- 20:03Track 2: Where it's like one.
- 20:05Track 3: Kind of set period of time with a
- 20:08Track 3: bunch of different characters and like figuring out how to connect it together
- 20:11Track 3: and there is like little stuff like the scene with paul rudd where he's like
- 20:14Track 3: acting like a baby and like cleaning up the stuff off the floor or whatever
- 20:17Track 3: like that is like funny but also it kind of tells you that he's like lazy or
- 20:22Track 3: whatever and he's like that's why we left it in because it helps later when
- 20:25Track 3: like you know the kid or whatever is drowning and it's like you just remember that he's a lazy guy.
- 20:30Track 2: Just like the fact that like this movie was made
- 20:33Track 2: and put in theaters like that wouldn't happen today you
- 20:36Track 2: know or if it did no one would i mean no one really cared when it came
- 20:39Track 2: out but especially now like i feel like that that
- 20:42Track 2: was the most interesting thing to me was like the the fact
- 20:44Track 2: that people sort of had this like mental real estate and
- 20:48Track 2: money and ruined the theater to be like yeah let's give
- 20:51Track 2: money to a bunch of like kind of young people who you
- 20:54Track 2: know they've done some tv or whatever but yeah let's have him
- 20:57Track 2: make a movie and you know it failed but like they gave it
- 21:00Track 2: a shot and everyone sort of had a career after this so
- 21:03Track 2: even if the movie didn't make money I think it was ultimately a success
- 21:05Track 2: and plus like you know it's a cult it's as of now
- 21:08Track 2: like cult status or whatever but yeah it does seem like I don't
- 21:11Track 2: want to say like frivolous but it does seem like
- 21:14Track 2: weirdly detached from anything and I think that goes to
- 21:17Track 2: that idea of like irony and like like
- 21:20Track 2: everyone likes to say that every generation is the first to discover
- 21:23Track 2: irony but they've literally been saying it they said that about millennials they
- 21:26Track 2: said that about gen x2 like everything's ironic and
- 21:29Track 2: even baby boomers there's a there's actually um
- 21:33Track 2: a a sequence in uh adam curtis's
- 21:36Track 2: hyper normalization that i kept thinking of where he like he's talking about
- 21:40Track 2: patty smith and how like the boomers as like life became more as the world became
- 21:45Track 2: more complex or whatever they just sort of disappeared into their like worlds
- 21:50Track 2: of culture and you know became cool detached observers and this feels like.
- 21:55Track 2: The like genetics obviously had that thing in
- 21:58Track 2: them like as we all have uh but like this feels like
- 22:01Track 2: a 100 like an artifact of that because it is weirdly just like it's like in
- 22:06Track 2: a vacuum like it's sealed off by its like parody and satire or whatever but
- 22:10Track 2: like it's those tendencies you know those off the wall because that's what it
- 22:13Track 2: is it's like it's a parody of those films it's everything taken to the 11th
- 22:17Track 2: you know degree or whatever i.
- 22:19evan: Mean it says something that netflix would come back you know,
- 22:22evan: that much later and make not one but two different you know series based on
- 22:27evan: i mean clearly they've saw you know i hate to say like value in it you know in it as a as a you know.
- 22:34Track 2: Ip yeah.
- 22:35evan: Yeah i mean i think i also saw they were briefly considering there being like
- 22:40evan: a show that was going to be a sitcom which i don't think would work it has to
- 22:43evan: be on cable you know like something like yeah they.
- 22:45Track 3: Were they were.
- 22:46Track 2: Working on like.
- 22:46Track 3: A network show i think that wouldn't work for this.
- 22:48Track 2: That would have been weird yeah yeah.
- 22:51Track 3: That would be bad yeah.
- 22:53Track 2: Yeah at least like the netflix shows feel like there's certainly
- 22:56Track 2: like an uncanny uh aspect to them but
- 22:59Track 2: they still feel like sort of like cinematic in
- 23:02Track 2: a way that like the film did you know like the film's
- 23:05Track 2: not the most cinematic film ever but it is shot on actual film
- 23:08Track 2: and so like the netflix the cinematic approach i
- 23:11Track 2: think like helped you know in this case or whatever and
- 23:14Track 2: again they like play up that uncanny aspect and it's
- 23:17Track 2: so funny because like some of the casts you know david showalter
- 23:20Track 2: bless his heart other other of the cast you know have like not aged a day and
- 23:26Track 2: like now that i'm like a little bit older i feel like the key difference is
- 23:29Track 2: like those who drink versus those who don't like i'm like oh i can kind of tell
- 23:33Track 2: which one's like like elizabeth bakes is probably drinking a lot of water mostly you know yeah.
- 23:40evan: Well it's funny i mentioned at the start like how many people are in this and
- 23:44evan: it's not just tons of people, but it's a lot of people's, their first,
- 23:48evan: like their cinematic date, or I guess their, uh,
- 23:52evan: yeah, film debuts, like including Bradley Cooper, which I think famously he
- 23:57evan: says he doesn't ever remember getting paid for the movie.
- 23:59evan: And also he skipped his graduation from film school to be in the scene where
- 24:04evan: he, you know, has sex with, uh, with, um, like black.
- 24:09evan: And like, that was, that was literally how he describes it. I left to go do
- 24:13evan: that scene. And it's this.
- 24:14Track 3: That's the maestro that's the maestro you know.
- 24:17evan: Yeah and it has so many and like it's funny i was just watching
- 24:20evan: right before we recorded this this new shonda rhimes
- 24:24evan: series about like a murder in the white house i can't think of what it's called
- 24:27evan: at the moment but ken marino is like one of the main characters in it and i
- 24:30evan: was thinking like he he i mean i wish there i always say like i wish there were
- 24:34evan: just more shows that had ken marino in it just like more of them i always uh
- 24:38evan: like when He's in things.
- 24:40Track 2: Party Down.
- 24:41Track 3: Apparently his wig in this movie, he found himself.
- 24:45evan: Oh, really? I didn't see that.
- 24:46Track 3: Yeah, well, because he was like doing TV stuff at the time. And so he couldn't
- 24:51Track 3: actually like get a perm or whatever.
- 24:53Track 3: So I think they said they were going to have some on set for him.
- 24:57Track 3: But he was like, no, it's going to be, I'm not going to have any good choices.
- 24:59Track 3: And so, yeah, he like bought that horrible perm wig in LA.
- 25:03evan: I mean, so many of them had nobody. Like Amy Poehler was saying they came and
- 25:06evan: like didn't have anything. like
- 25:08evan: they didn't know what to bring they didn't have any stuff you know like.
- 25:11Track 2: Yeah because they because they spend it all on weed and beer that's where all their money.
- 25:16evan: Yeah literally bradley.
- 25:17Track 2: Cooper though like the first time i remember seeing him was in wedding crashers
- 25:21Track 2: which was a comedy and you know and then like famously he did elephant man on
- 25:27Track 2: broadway with no prosthetics he's like i'm doing this full natty i mean that's
- 25:31Track 2: one of the funniest bits he's ever done you know uh comedic genius in some ways.
- 25:36evan: Yeah i don't i.
- 25:38Track 3: Guess he was in the hangover also i guess he was of course.
- 25:41evan: Yeah i was trying to think of the first thing i remember him
- 25:44evan: being in or i think i remember it was i mean probably this but
- 25:47evan: at the time when i saw this i probably didn't really know bradley cooper was
- 25:50evan: still you know fairly early on i think yeah yeah i think like he was also an
- 25:54evan: alias for a bunch of uh season or seasons too but i don't know if i watched
- 26:00evan: that show like religiously so i don't know that i remember no yeah i think i've
- 26:03evan: just seen a few episodes but i think he was a major a main character of
- 26:07evan: for a few seasons but yeah like just all of the the actors on i mean this is
- 26:12evan: this is like i wasn't listening to this on my like notes or anything but like
- 26:15evan: who do you like what character is your favorite in this uh film.
- 26:19Track 3: I also i had a similar question it was kind of more like what what which one
- 26:23Track 3: do you like identify with they're like which one would you say you are but okay
- 26:27Track 3: you could you could say you could go either one it's like which one would you want to be and which.
- 26:30evan: One are you.
- 26:31Track 3: Yeah i don't know i think that's a good i'm probably the kid who's just sitting
- 26:37Track 3: in the radio room talking into an unplugged microphone dude i was gonna take
- 26:41Track 3: a shower i was gonna say doing.
- 26:43Track 2: A radio show into unplugged machinery and equipment is like a very good metaphor for podcasting.
- 26:50Track 3: You know so i mean i definitely.
- 26:53Track 2: Yeah i mean uh gary is the he has the funniest quotes like he's when he's like
- 26:59Track 2: when they're like watching um like the girls on dress and he's like oh it's just like clue um.
- 27:06Track 3: Yeah is that 80 miles is that his character yeah.
- 27:10Track 2: Yeah 80 miles is scary yeah he has so many just like fucking funny lines like
- 27:15Track 2: that he has my like he's my favorite because like him and ken marina um.
- 27:20Track 3: I like that like gene like the the head cook or whatever like is always like
- 27:24Track 3: yelling at him but like he's never like he's never intimidated by Christopher
- 27:29Track 3: Maloney at all yeah he's just kind of like okay man yeah.
- 27:32Track 2: Me and Ryan were talking about how good Christopher Maloney is he's good.
- 27:36Track 3: In this and the prequel.
- 27:37Track 2: He's amazing also.
- 27:39Track 3: I mean you haven't seen They Came Together but you need to for Christopher Maloney he has,
- 27:45Track 3: one of the funniest bits in that movie. I won't spoil it.
- 27:48evan: Yes, that is like on the top of my list, obviously. Oh, oh yeah,
- 27:53evan: so wait, so you both said, you both identified with, what was the kid's name? What is his, the.
- 27:58Track 3: What was the kid's name? I don't remember.
- 27:59Track 2: The beekeeper.
- 28:00evan: The beekeeper, yes, of course. I love also where he talks about how he can be,
- 28:04evan: you can like listen to him at his like synagogue or his like the Jewish day
- 28:07evan: school's radio station when he gets back home.
- 28:11Track 2: But I was also going to say Gary and JJ played by Zach Orth.
- 28:15Track 2: Like they're kind of like the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of this film.
- 28:18Track 2: And they might be my favorite part of the movie. Like, oh, they're so good.
- 28:23evan: I always, as far as like my favorite character, as I already admitted being
- 28:27evan: a big Ken Marino fan, I feel like I just love his character and just it's,
- 28:31evan: it's funny and all of that.
- 28:34evan: And it's like for the one that I would identify with, I mean,
- 28:37evan: I guess maybe like the raid, the kid, the radio kid, but also just maybe like
- 28:41evan: one of the, I don't know. I mean, maybe, maybe even just Michael Showalter, you know?
- 28:46Track 2: Yeah. I was going to say like Michael Showalter Coop, he's like,
- 28:49Track 2: he's definitely the character that like, I would hate to admit it,
- 28:54Track 2: but like there definitely was a time, i.e. high school when I a hundred percent
- 28:57Track 2: was a Coop and I, if I could go back in time.
- 29:01Track 3: I probably looked to like a lot like him in high school.
- 29:03Track 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 29:04Track 3: I had pretty long hair in high school.
- 29:06Track 2: So yeah, we all had that haircut, I think at one point for sure.
- 29:09evan: And it's funny because when I went to camp, there was a kid whose name was Coop.
- 29:14evan: Like, I feel like every camp had a Coop. I don't remember what his first name
- 29:17evan: was, but everyone just called him Coop. But his name wasn't Cooperberg. It was just Cooper.
- 29:21Track 2: In this film, it's actually short for Bradley Cooper, strangely enough.
- 29:25Track 2: It's his name in the film.
- 29:27Track 3: It's Cooperberg, which is also like, I think I'm playing more on the Jewish joke.
- 29:31Track 3: I did like that Molly Shannon's character's name was like von Kleinenstein.
- 29:36evan: Yeah, just like a German.
- 29:38Track 2: It's really good. it's.
- 29:39evan: Ridiculous names i mean i think like i think you you mentioned 80 miles and
- 29:43evan: zach or it's kind of their like pairing i also just like the amy polar bradley
- 29:47evan: cooper dynamic and like a more they're like.
- 29:48Track 2: Definitely more mean-spirited.
- 29:50evan: In a way but like when they come to the table and they're like you know leave
- 29:53evan: your like leave your bullshit behind and you know come to the audition.
- 29:57Track 2: I was gonna say yeah like amy polar i used to go to
- 30:00Track 2: a bunch of shows for a short period of time uh at
- 30:02Track 2: the one of the ucb theaters in la the one on franklin and
- 30:06Track 2: there was this show they would do where like it would be like one actor
- 30:09Track 2: paired up with one improviser and that
- 30:11Track 2: it would be a short scene and the actor would know all their lines and the improviser
- 30:15Track 2: wouldn't know what it is so they would just have to make shit up so I saw like
- 30:18Track 2: Thomas Middleditch and people like that perform or whatever um but yeah I saw
- 30:21Track 2: Amy Poehler uh perform there and she's very funny like she's she's always had
- 30:25Track 2: that like swag or whatever you know about her like she's just she's super funny.
- 30:30evan: Yeah. Her, like her, um, behind the scenes, like in the documentary,
- 30:34evan: she, her and probably Jeanine Grilofalo are probably the funniest kind of doing
- 30:38evan: bits in that, you know, off camera.
- 30:40evan: And they also said, this was like one of the notes that they describe is they
- 30:44evan: filmed for 28 days and it rained for, I think, 21 of them. They said,
- 30:48evan: so they were just inside.
- 30:49Track 3: You can see it in the background. A lot of the times it's just, yeah.
- 30:53evan: And really cold apparently like they would film scenes in bikinis and they would
- 30:56evan: just have to like, Like, make sure you couldn't see, like, their breath in the
- 31:00evan: air because it was so cold.
- 31:01evan: But both of them, like, would, were clearly, they talk about how they all just
- 31:04evan: became extremely close to each other.
- 31:06evan: They were just hanging out, getting drunk, getting high.
- 31:09evan: Just, you know, that was just what they did.
- 31:11Track 2: Yeah, I mean, yeah. And who am I kidding? I'm Lindsay. I'm Elizabeth Banks when
- 31:16Track 2: she has barbecue all over her face.
- 31:19Track 2: That's who I am.
- 31:20Track 3: We have coined a term called barbecue cinema where like it's come up a few times
- 31:26Track 3: now where it's like these kind of like almost like populist type movies about
- 31:29Track 3: like, I don't know, a Southern family or whatever.
- 31:32Track 3: And like it originated with like this Alan Rudolph film that he like was hired
- 31:37Track 3: to direct called Rhodey with like meatloaf.
- 31:39Track 3: And Art Carney is in it. And he literally is like smearing barbecue sauce all
- 31:44Track 3: over his face in one scene.
- 31:46Track 3: And that's where it originated from.
- 31:49Track 2: Yeah. Like, Ernest Goes to Jail, which I always contend should be Ernest Goes
- 31:53Track 2: to Prison because he doesn't go to jail, he goes to prison.
- 31:56Track 2: But Ernest Goes to Jail is a barbecue sauce movie. The TV show Mama's Family
- 32:00Track 2: is 100% a barbecue sauce TV show.
- 32:03Track 2: It's barbecues. Yeah, Hee Haw, that's all barbecue.
- 32:07Track 2: And now this, you know, Elizabeth Banks.
- 32:10Track 3: Another edition.
- 32:11Track 2: Yeah, Sloppy Barbecue.
- 32:12Track 3: The barbecue criterion, yeah.
- 32:13evan: I like how she's listed as the last person in the starring, at least on Wikipedia.
- 32:19Track 3: I always forget she's in this movie.
- 32:21evan: She doesn't have a lot of scenes, right? She's in like halfway in.
- 32:23evan: She really is like on the side, except for the scene where she's making out with Paul Rudd.
- 32:27evan: I feel like she's just not really in it too much.
- 32:30Track 3: Yeah, that's kind of what she's here for. That and the...
- 32:33Track 3: barbecue sauce which is one of my favorite scenes yeah i feel like the the characters
- 32:39Track 3: that are closest to like the cast of this movie like david wayne and all them
- 32:43Track 3: are the theater people because they're all like nyu uh yeah you know like i
- 32:49Track 3: don't know i feel like the state and like,
- 32:51Track 3: stella to an extent it did kind of feel like theater kids a little bit but like
- 32:55Track 3: funny theater kids so like you know you kind of it doesn't come with the negative
- 33:00Track 3: connotation that theater kid sometimes comes with.
- 33:02Track 2: And then also the improv thing with amy polar and then in in like the prequel
- 33:07Track 2: series they have like rob hubel and paul sheard.
- 33:10Track 3: Yeah a lot.
- 33:11Track 2: Of ucb uh kinds of types or whatever so yeah this is also like they're very
- 33:16Track 2: much like a theater kid movie but like complimentary you know.
- 33:19Track 3: Exactly yeah yeah.
- 33:21evan: I mean they're like it's funny how there's some of the you know i think of like
- 33:25evan: jolo trulio's character isn't in it much either but i think of him and other
- 33:29evan: things since then as also being extremely funny,
- 33:32evan: but he just, you know, there's only so much, I don't know, I don't know if there
- 33:35evan: were other scenes that didn't make it, or just, as you said,
- 33:37evan: maybe who were people who were more close to David,
- 33:40evan: got to, you know, got more screen time.
- 33:42Track 3: Yeah, he gets one of my favorite scenes in this, which is when he's reacting
- 33:46Track 3: to Ken Marino's saving the kids in the rack.
- 33:48Track 2: Oh, yeah.
- 33:49Track 3: We never see it, but he's just like, oh, there he goes, oh, he's saving them.
- 33:54Track 2: It depends on where you are in Wayne's world, you know.
- 33:57Track 3: That's right, yeah, that's right.
- 33:59evan: Yeah, it could be Wayne's World. You need a hat that says Wayne's World, but just spelled W-A-N.
- 34:04Track 3: Our friend Jake told me to tell this joke, but the wet, hot American summer,
- 34:09Track 3: that refers to the gallons and gallons of water that Amy Poehler uses to water
- 34:13Track 3: her plants and lawn in Los Angeles. Yes.
- 34:16Track 2: She got in trouble. Speaking of bad politics, yeah, she got in trouble for using
- 34:21Track 2: way more water than she should at her Beverly Hills home.
- 34:26Track 2: California, obviously, a state that has, you know, they have a thing about water, you could say.
- 34:30Track 3: Yeah, there's sort of a drought.
- 34:32evan: Well, since you mentioned, like, the, like, politics, some of the cast, you both,
- 34:36evan: or I don't remember which one of you had sent me the link to Michael Ian Black's
- 34:40evan: friendship with Meghan McCain and a book that I didn't know existed,
- 34:44evan: which I would never, I would never buy, maybe I just, like, memory hold that,
- 34:48evan: like, I just, you know, forgot that it existed.
- 34:51Track 3: So much has happened, more important things have happened.
- 34:54evan: Yeah, I guess so. What was that, like, 2012 or 13, I guess it would have been? No.
- 34:58Track 3: Maybe, like, 2019.
- 35:00evan: Oh, it's even more, oh, geez.
- 35:02Track 3: I feel like it wasn't that long ago, but it was long enough that it's like understandable to forget.
- 35:05evan: Yeah, so yeah, like you said, a few things have happened since then.
- 35:08Track 3: But apparently— I wish I could forget it.
- 35:10evan: Yeah, it just—and honestly, it doesn't surprise me. I think—I don't know if
- 35:13evan: I follow him on Twitter, but sometimes I see some of the things he posts.
- 35:16evan: And he just, to me, strikes me as probably a lot of the cast just kind of like standard liberals.
- 35:21evan: You know, I feel like that's just kind of their—,
- 35:23evan: You know, very like a.
- 35:25Track 3: Patton Oswalt or whatever, like, yeah, too much online, maybe you're like,
- 35:29Track 3: you know, I'll name the worst one.
- 35:31Track 3: It's just Greg groups. That guy needs to get off.
- 35:33Track 2: Yeah.
- 35:36Track 2: Yeah. I was the one who sent you the article because I knew about their friendship
- 35:40Track 2: and I knew about their book and stuff.
- 35:42Track 2: And I looked up this fucking it's from his sub stack, by the way.
- 35:46Track 2: And this shit was from this year. It's an article he fucking wrote.
- 35:50Track 2: I'll just read like the beginning of it. I just went to Megan McCain's podcast.
- 35:55Track 2: Every time I mention Megan or Megan mentions me, we both get grief about our friendship.
- 36:00Track 2: People are flummoxed by our relationship, which in turn flummoxes me.
- 36:05Track 2: Is it that unusual for two people of opposite sexes in political parties to have a friendship?
- 36:10Track 2: Maybe it is. And now that I think of it, Megan is my only female conservative
- 36:15Track 2: friend, or at least she's the only one as vocal about it as I am about my own liberal leanings.
- 36:21Track 2: we met at a tv taping i was hosting
- 36:24Track 2: a talk show pilot she was a guest we hit
- 36:27Track 2: it off because we we hit it off and became twitter friends one night casting
- 36:32Track 2: about for one night casting about for something to do i took an ambient got
- 36:37Track 2: on twitter i got the brilliant idea that we should write a book together i dm'd
- 36:42Track 2: her something along the lines of we should write a book together,
- 36:45Track 2: um yeah so he took a fucking sleeping pill and dm'd her and now they're best
- 36:50Track 2: friends to this day wow it's so crazy but it's so i.
- 36:55Track 3: Like how he thinks he's like the first guy to be like i'm a liberal and i'm
- 36:59Track 3: friends with the conservative like.
- 37:00Track 2: James carville.
- 37:02Track 3: Hasn't been doing like 40 years or whatever.
- 37:04Track 2: I was literally gonna say like me and ryan have made
- 37:06Track 2: fun of james carville because it's like yeah like the fact that you can like
- 37:09Track 2: have fucking dinner drinks with these people that's part of the fucking problem
- 37:13Track 2: and it's part of the reason why nothing gets done and it's just it's so emblematic
- 37:17Track 2: of the liberal mindset of just like well hey like because none of this shit
- 37:20Track 2: really bothers them right it's all theater none of it affects them it's all
- 37:24Track 2: just like my team versus your team at the end of the day they're all a bunch
- 37:27Track 2: of fucking rich assholes well i was.
- 37:29evan: Gonna say it's like they're both conservative he just has like he's like and.
- 37:33Track 2: Exactly he just.
- 37:34evan: Like you know like weed should be legal and like you should pay more tax gay people can.
- 37:38Track 3: Get married or whatever yeah.
- 37:40Track 2: Yeah, and the way that all liberals are fascists, it's the same thing of all
- 37:46Track 2: conservatives are just liberals.
- 37:48Track 2: They just want everyone to like the same TV shows and music that they do,
- 37:52Track 2: and they want to be on TV. It's the same bullshit.
- 37:56evan: I think that's a lot of it.
- 37:57Track 3: You mentioned she went on her podcast. I was imagining two unplugged microphones on the floor.
- 38:04Track 2: Yeah, I mean, if we lived in a good world, that's what it would be.
- 38:07evan: That wouldn't have to get broadcast.
- 38:09Track 3: That's what it's going to be in my head. I will never.
- 38:11Track 2: Yeah, I would wear a king.
- 38:13evan: That reminds me, not reminds, that like leads me to like one of the only,
- 38:16evan: I don't know if I would call this a political aspect of it, but it reminded
- 38:19evan: me just because of like the Meghan McCain and Michael Ian Black and sort of
- 38:23evan: like, you know, one of them would be like, I'm pro, you know,
- 38:25evan: I'm in favor of abortion.
- 38:26evan: The other was like, oh, I'm, you know, I'm pro life or whatever.
- 38:29evan: And the only thing I could like derive from this and sort of like politics and
- 38:33evan: I sort of took this as like sort of like identity politics.
- 38:36evan: Maybe maybe I'm reaching here again.
- 38:38evan: This is wet on American summer, but I'm going to try or maybe I'd maybe I shouldn't try.
- 38:43evan: But like when they drop like the like the the F slur a few times specifically,
- 38:47evan: I think it's 80 miles and Zach Orrith when they're talking about Michael in black coincidentally,
- 38:54evan: you know, and and Bradley Cooper's character as, you know,
- 38:58evan: first they realize like they're trying to get him a girl and then
- 39:01evan: they see you know see them getting i guess married or
- 39:04evan: whatever in the woods and like you know it's seeming
- 39:07evan: it seems like they're like angry and upset that they now know that
- 39:10evan: they're gay but then later we have the scene where they bring them this like
- 39:13evan: chase lounge from crate and barrel which apparently was able to be delivered
- 39:17evan: same day you know at uh such a good summer camp which is also a great for you
- 39:21evan: but you think it's going to be something like nefarious or mean but like somehow
- 39:26evan: in my mind i'm thinking to myself like Like, is this this weird, I don't know,
- 39:29evan: this kind of like liberal mindset of like,
- 39:33evan: you know, you're against these things unless it's like helpful to us politically. I don't know.
- 39:38Track 2: Yeah.
- 39:38Track 2: I was gonna say like they want to have their cake and eat it too
- 39:41Track 2: because like I was literally thinking about this like earlier today
- 39:45Track 2: like sometimes I feel like in I'm in the twilight zone and
- 39:47Track 2: I'm the only person who has like long-term memory because
- 39:50Track 2: like I was around back then I was around in 2001 I was
- 39:53Track 2: 14 like I remember like we knew back then
- 39:56Track 2: that you couldn't say these kinds of things you couldn't say these words I
- 39:59Track 2: wasn't saying them you know when I was 14 or whatever so like
- 40:02Track 2: because people you know say like oh it's a different time but it's like no we
- 40:05Track 2: knew and we still know and i think like i don't
- 40:08Track 2: think much has changed i think there are still comedians who
- 40:11Track 2: you know otherwise they're like you know left or
- 40:14Track 2: progressive thinking people but who would use the word you
- 40:17Track 2: know if it if if they think it'll get
- 40:20Track 2: a laugh you know and they'll say like oh if it's funny you know who cares and
- 40:23Track 2: you know uh and yeah it is a bit again i think it's having your cake you need
- 40:27Track 2: it too because you want to you want to take advantage like you want to have
- 40:31Track 2: the shock you want to have the like oomph of like saying it but you want to
- 40:35Track 2: be like oh but you know we don't really believe you know hey we're going full.
- 40:39Track 3: Out on the 80s comedy parody and so we have to use some kind of slur.
- 40:43Track 2: Yeah yeah yeah it's.
- 40:45evan: Funny it's almost like.
- 40:46Track 2: That's actually a good point right but if they had commented on it it's like
- 40:50Track 2: they had said it and be like dude you can't say it and be like hey it's the
- 40:53Track 2: 80s you know whatever like it's a different time they do that with the whole.
- 40:56Track 3: Like softball game joke right.
- 40:57Track 2: Like yeah that is such a good yeah breaking.
- 40:59Track 3: The fourth well with that.
- 41:00Track 2: Yeah yeah i think that actually.
- 41:02evan: That would have that would have been a really smart way to like in a smarter
- 41:06evan: slightly smarter comedy might have been like oh you can't say that and like
- 41:09evan: oh like it's you know it's the 80s and you know
- 41:12evan: That would have been a good line to, I don't know.
- 41:16Track 3: I do remember one Stella's sketch where like the three guys,
- 41:20Track 3: they get girlfriends in one of these little like, I don't even,
- 41:23Track 3: I think it's like one of the Comedy Central episodes. So they're like very short.
- 41:27Track 3: And I think their girlfriends are like Rashida Jones and like Amy Poehler and
- 41:31Track 3: like some other very talented now famous person.
- 41:33Track 3: But they are like hiding from them at one point and they like need to walk past
- 41:38Track 3: them in a disguise. And so they go behind a bush and they come out and they
- 41:42Track 3: are in like full like vaudeville like blackface.
- 41:46Track 3: Like it's crazy.
- 41:49Track 3: Like there is.
- 41:50Track 2: Yeah.
- 41:51Track 3: I've done for like shock and like like look how dumb these guys are.
- 41:54Track 2: You know, and like that's just like a definitely a liberal coded thing of like,
- 41:58Track 2: oh, but we're doing it subversively.
- 42:00Track 3: It's I remember like rewatching it a lot like a couple of years ago and like
- 42:05Track 3: my jaw fell to the floor. I was like, holy shit.
- 42:08Track 2: It doesn't yeah it doesn't hold like like uh
- 42:11Track 2: i know always sunny you know they've taken down episodes because
- 42:14Track 2: but i think it's totally different like you know
- 42:17Track 2: it holds up like again i feel like
- 42:20Track 2: it's that liberal thing of like hey like we're you know it
- 42:23Track 2: it doesn't hold up after you know the way that
- 42:26Track 2: they've sort of made excuses for kamala and joe
- 42:29Track 2: biden and hey like who cares about gaza just
- 42:32Track 2: vote for them you know you're you know hey look we got trump now you know like
- 42:36Track 2: as if they didn't just as if the biden administration including kamala didn't
- 42:40Track 2: just aid the genocide or whatever but yeah it's totally like liberal mindset
- 42:45Track 2: thinking but it's a really funny movie too i think unfortunately well it's it's.
- 42:50evan: Unfortunate like that so i don't know if you remember either like the the jimmy
- 42:55evan: kimmel show the man show i don't know if you've ever actually seen.
- 42:58Track 2: It's very offensive in general yeah like.
- 43:00evan: The show has like.
- 43:01Track 2: A concept.
- 43:01evan: But he also did like blackface of like Charles.
- 43:04Track 2: Barkley. Oh, yeah.
- 43:05evan: And I think eventually he came out and said...
- 43:07Track 3: Yeah, like Karl Malone, I think. I think he did it a couple times for a different NBA game.
- 43:11evan: I think his, like, apology was, like, not really an apology.
- 43:14evan: He's like, oh, I did... It's like one of those, like, I didn't mean to offend
- 43:17evan: anyone, but, like, he still probably thinks...
- 43:19Track 2: Sorry if you got offended.
- 43:20evan: Yeah, exactly. Something like that.
- 43:22Track 3: Sorry I made you feel that way, yeah.
- 43:24Track 2: Hey, sorry you feel that way, brother.
- 43:26evan: But that was the same time period.
- 43:27Track 2: I think it was.
- 43:27evan: Like, 1990... I looked it up. 99 to 2004.
- 43:31evan: So around the same time, again, to the point of these things were offensive,
- 43:37evan: but people viewed it as like, we're just pushing the envelope or something.
- 43:42evan: You know, like, you know, not...
- 43:44Track 3: Yeah, I feel like to like, I don't know, especially with like,
- 43:49Track 3: I don't know, the kind of liberal celebrity types, like it's it's almost less
- 43:53Track 3: nefarious and more stupid of like, I just don't want to even think about it type thing.
- 43:57Track 3: And like, stop, stop showing me it, you know, I think that's what they want.
- 44:01Track 3: They just want to go to brunch or whatever.
- 44:03Track 2: And that feels very gross. That to me is extremely offensive. Yeah, I hate that.
- 44:09evan: Well, I don't know if this is like maybe a poor segue, but I was just thinking
- 44:14evan: because you're talking about sort of like, oh, yeah, like, let's just, you know, do whatever.
- 44:17evan: It reminds me of the scene where they're like, they're all, they just had their
- 44:20evan: meeting with camp director, Jeannie Graffalo.
- 44:23evan: And they're like, oh, like we should, you know, in 10 years,
- 44:26evan: we should all see what like we're like and, you know, and meet up.
- 44:28evan: And they're like, oh, meet up at nine o'clock. It's like, oh, what about 930?
- 44:31evan: And Bradley Cooper's like, oh, we'll say nine, but let's make it 930.
- 44:35evan: Like, oh, why can't we be here? Why can't we make it your beeswax to be here by 930?
- 44:39evan: And I was just thinking like this, I almost like lost my, uh,
- 44:43evan: my thread as to my loose thread as to why those two things came together.
- 44:47evan: And I don't know what it was.
- 44:49evan: Oh, just like, you know, this, like, we don't really care about anything.
- 44:52evan: We just kind of care about our own personal thing.
- 44:55evan: It's like, oh yeah, I have a, an appointment at 11.
- 44:58evan: I can't move it. I don't, I don't know. Just this, I think that my,
- 45:00evan: my connection of those two things really is a real, is doesn't work too well, but.
- 45:04Track 2: It's an inconvenience yeah they hate being inconvenient.
- 45:07evan: Yes i think that's what it really is i really.
- 45:09Track 3: Paul rudd is like the the epitome of like all of that attitude yeah.
- 45:14Track 2: And i bring this up all the time but i'm
- 45:16Track 2: like every like second of convenience for us comes at like the suffering of
- 45:21Track 2: someone else you know like and that's like i'm not i'm not like excluding myself
- 45:25Track 2: from that but it's like a harsh reality that again people don't they're like
- 45:30Track 2: you know like don't bum people out you know you can't stay this kind of stuff at a party or whatever.
- 45:35evan: Yeah um what was i gonna mention there's
- 45:38evan: a there's a bunch of other like random things so i don't think we mentioned or
- 45:41evan: maybe you did the beginning was like the david hyde pierce in this
- 45:44evan: film and i was thinking about i was thinking about
- 45:46evan: him and i i honestly i was just like recounting some
- 45:49evan: of my favorite scenes and honestly i actually wrote down
- 45:52evan: just every scene that he is in is funny like every
- 45:56evan: time he's in the film with mostly with jenny ruffalo like their banter back
- 45:59evan: and forth for me like my favorite one is when they're i think it's in the evening
- 46:03evan: during the talent show and he's like oh meet me over at the picnic table in
- 46:06evan: 10 seconds and she just like is staring into the sky and it actually 10 seconds
- 46:10evan: does go by and she walks over and like all the kids are assembled you.
- 46:13Track 3: Could see he like barely managed to get the like lab coat on like they actually
- 46:18Track 3: like carried out a bench or whatever in 10 seconds.
- 46:21Track 2: He like snaps and yells at her.
- 46:22Track 3: And then like apologizes later there's some random bursts of like anger like
- 46:29Track 3: when he like looks at the results and he's like fuck my cock you know it's so funny.
- 46:33Track 2: Yeah yeah because we there was a movie we watched recently where like,
- 46:37Track 2: uh i think it was maybe hard to kill whereas like the way peter fonda yelled
- 46:42Track 2: at his son was fighting mad yeah yeah sorry yeah it was like it felt very real
- 46:48Track 2: like the way he like was yelling at his kid.
- 46:50evan: Yeah he has lots of great telling.
- 46:53Track 3: Him to shut up.
- 46:54evan: I mean it like the it just it's kind of great that
- 46:56evan: they got him and uh um baloney to
- 47:00evan: to be in this film like they've they've they probably both read the script and
- 47:03evan: like this is really funny sure i'll you know i'll do this whatever it you know
- 47:06evan: it seems like a good time but it does seem uh like um from what i gathered it
- 47:11evan: seemed like david hyde pierce didn't hang out with most of the people who were
- 47:15evan: in it they were all much younger than him i guess well i don't know how old he was what year was the.
- 47:19Track 3: Yeah he was like mostly in his room right like.
- 47:21evan: During yeah it seemed like he wasn't really part of the rest of the group i
- 47:24evan: mean he was he was born in 1959 well before most of these people so yeah except
- 47:29evan: for maybe jenny graffalo yeah.
- 47:31Track 2: He was a boomer and he had been on like fraser forever by this point he was
- 47:35Track 2: in his hotel with his emmys you know.
- 47:37evan: He did not do none of the nonsense yeah that would be it would actually be
- 47:40evan: funny if he didn't actually stay at the camp but maybe he like had just had
- 47:44evan: his own private cabin or something i think bradley cooper in the like the in
- 47:48evan: the uh thing thought because the way he probably envisioned like being on set
- 47:52evan: was like get your own trailer and it's all spread out he's like i got there
- 47:55evan: and i'm just like sleeping in the infirmary that was cool yeah.
- 47:59Track 3: Sleeping in a bunk bed yeah.
- 48:00evan: We i guess we talked about like our arc the best characters. What are some of the...
- 48:07evan: Again, because there's so many, really so many scenes.
- 48:09Track 3: I feel like that is the best way to talk about this movie because it is such a loose structure.
- 48:15Track 3: There's like seven or so character stories. I kind of recorded them down.
- 48:18evan: Oh, well, yeah.
- 48:19Track 3: Like broke them down a little bit. But you have like...
- 48:21Track 3: cooper and katie which is uh michael show walter and uh
- 48:25Track 3: marguerite moreau i think uh and then
- 48:28Track 3: you have andy and katie which is paul rudd and and moreau and
- 48:31Track 3: then you have like a few different like mini hookup stories of like
- 48:34Track 3: ken marino uh and like his whole thing in the woods which is amazing and like
- 48:39Track 3: michael eon black and uh bradley cooper and then you have molly shannon as gail
- 48:43Track 3: the art teacher with those it's i love that she is just given her whole own
- 48:47Track 3: like little plot like She doesn't interact with anyone else in the movie. Not until the end, yeah.
- 48:53Track 3: She's like, all right, bye, everyone. I'm going to go marry this child.
- 48:56evan: That also has one of my favorite lines when Amy – or when Ginny Garofalo says,
- 49:01evan: I'm allergic to oxymorons.
- 49:03Track 3: Yeah.
- 49:04evan: Oh, my gosh.
- 49:04Track 3: And then, yeah, you have the talent show, which is kind of being set up by Susie
- 49:09Track 3: and Ben, which is Amy Poehler and Bradley Cooper.
- 49:11Track 3: And then you have Beth and the professor when the whole like the Skylab is going
- 49:15Track 3: to come crashing into Earth and it's going to fall right on the rec center in 90 minutes.
- 49:21Track 3: Oh, and you also have children trapped on a raft that need to be saved from the waterfall.
- 49:26evan: Yes.
- 49:26Track 3: Which connects back to Ken Marino's thing.
- 49:29evan: Yeah, they do connect a lot of them. Like a thread goes through them.
- 49:32evan: And also like the constant moments when Paul Rudd is like annoyed by a kid and
- 49:37evan: drives them out with a van and throws them out.
- 49:39Track 2: Dude, yeah. I wrote those down. Every time Paul Rudd, you know,
- 49:41Track 2: there's a couple of times where, like, one kid will see him, like,
- 49:44Track 2: kind of kill another kid and sort of have to like throw him off out of the van
- 49:48Track 2: like in the middle of nowhere i again i love jj and gary like whenever they're
- 49:53Track 2: like watching the wedding and one of them's like it looks like she's playing
- 49:57Track 2: the flute he's like kinky,
- 50:00Track 2: it's so good even at the beginning uh marguerite
- 50:03Track 2: moreau she has this like whenever coop tells her something
- 50:06Track 2: she just has this she goes yeah like it's just
- 50:09Track 2: the word yeah but the way she says it is so fucking funny and
- 50:12Track 2: then of course like all this stuff uh with gene like
- 50:15Track 2: his like soliloquy or whatever about vietnam
- 50:18Track 2: bomb oh i wrote down because like you know you're talking about like politics
- 50:22Track 2: and stuff because and gene is obviously a vietnam veteran or whatever and i
- 50:26Track 2: wrote this down i was like you know because oh we had a guy like that in our
- 50:30Track 2: community growing up like whenever there would be like a thing he would show
- 50:33Track 2: up and he would you know be in his camo jacket sort of like crawling around the.
- 50:38Track 3: Bombs were going down yeah.
- 50:39Track 2: He would be doing like that And I wrote down that, like, you know,
- 50:43Track 2: the, the, like, Iraqi and Afghanistan war veterans, they're not as fun as the Vietnam veterans.
- 50:49Track 3: They don't quite have the Oliver Stone, like, energy that we need, you know.
- 50:54Track 2: Jacob's Ladder. Yeah, they don't have to survive.
- 50:58evan: Yeah, he had the right of mind to do some comedy bits while he was having his
- 51:03evan: PTSD, like, moments, chopping, like, potatoes.
- 51:07Track 2: Yeah.
- 51:08evan: You know, in the.
- 51:09Track 2: It's so good.
- 51:09evan: I just love his interaction. I think you mentioned already with Gary,
- 51:13evan: like when he's in the kitchen, he's like, I think Paul Rudd or one of them asked
- 51:16evan: for like the mashed potatoes and he's like gets all pissed off and like just
- 51:19evan: slams backwards and, you know, just everyone keeps a straight face.
- 51:23evan: I mean, I sometimes wonder how many takes they needed for some of these scenes
- 51:27evan: of just that are just so funny that it would be hard to just keep straight.
- 51:30Track 2: I want to say i don't know if you mentioned but h john benjamin played yes i did not mention that.
- 51:35Track 3: Yeah talking vegetables yeah oh.
- 51:38Track 2: And uh there's a really funny line uh the dungeon master nerd i never noticed
- 51:44Track 2: this uh watch but he says any dungeon master worth his weight in geldings always
- 51:49Track 2: has a 20-sided dice a gelding is a castrated horse.
- 51:54Track 3: So like that's.
- 51:56Track 2: Really funny like any dungeon master worth his weight it uh castrated horses
- 52:00Track 2: i thought that was really good yeah.
- 52:02Track 3: Probably take a couple pounds off and.
- 52:05Track 2: I yeah and i love the nerds are really funny whenever they're like one of them's
- 52:09Track 2: like maybe we should all just let them die and.
- 52:12Track 3: Then one's like no he's like no my.
- 52:14Track 2: Friend jimmy's there he's like you have a friend he's like no i'm just kidding.
- 52:18Track 3: Well then.
- 52:18evan: I think they like later on they're like we're all friends you know like these
- 52:21evan: are you're like my only friend.
- 52:23Track 3: Yeah i i like uh the way david wayne
- 52:26Track 3: like is a lot of times parody movies
- 52:29Track 3: can sometimes be a little too much like i think we're like
- 52:32Track 3: naked gun and like airplane succeed i think this these
- 52:36Track 3: movies do too like they came together i think david wayne
- 52:38Track 3: is really good at finding like really specific tropes like
- 52:42Track 3: uh there's one scene when ken marino and
- 52:44Track 3: joe latrullio are driving to the river to go
- 52:47Track 3: on their little trip and like joe latrullio just has like a like a
- 52:50Track 3: protractor in his hand and it's like oh he's the math nerd
- 52:53Track 3: like it's like stupid 80s like comedy shit
- 52:56Track 3: like that like it's it's yeah always funny to me or like and they came together
- 53:00Track 3: there's a gag with like a bag of groceries that is like you're just like typical
- 53:04Track 3: like movie bag of groceries of like lettuce and like a baguette when they go
- 53:08Track 3: into town oh yeah yeah yeah oh when they go into town that's like one of the best even um.
- 53:16Track 2: I was going to say, you mentioned the softball scene. I had,
- 53:19Track 2: like, MASH vibes at the end of MASH.
- 53:21evan: Oh, yeah.
- 53:22Track 2: The big football scene. Also, anytime someone says, like, day by day,
- 53:27Track 2: like, hey, you have to take it day by day, I always go, day by day.
- 53:30Track 3: Day by day.
- 53:31Track 2: Day by day. Also, I just want to say, I am also so old that I ate Tyrannosaurus
- 53:39Track 2: eggs and wrapped a bacon.
- 53:41Track 3: Instead of cots, we laid on slams.
- 53:45Track 2: My classmate was fucking jesus christ.
- 53:47evan: For me that scene is what's almost funnier to me than like the jokes which are
- 53:51evan: like you know corny is actually the reactions of laughter by the by the campers
- 53:56evan: those are what makes me laugh so rolling.
- 53:58Track 3: In the aisles.
- 53:59evan: Yeah just you know yeah when.
- 54:01Track 2: They react to godspell with booze.
- 54:03Track 3: It's like hissing like a beautiful performance of a song from Maxwell and they hate it, yeah.
- 54:09evan: I think when Beth is kissing, they play the acoustic version of Kisses Beth,
- 54:16evan: which I think then came up again in another Wayne movie with her in it.
- 54:20Track 3: Role models.
- 54:21Track 2: Role models, yeah.
- 54:22Track 3: Paul Redd sings it at the end.
- 54:24evan: Yeah.
- 54:25Track 2: Yeah, he loves that song.
- 54:27evan: Having that, like, that exact, just, like, playing that song at that exact moment,
- 54:30evan: like, those, like, little bits are just, I don't know, they're just perfect.
- 54:34Track 3: I like that when, And whenever it does start to get kind of real or whatever,
- 54:39Track 3: like they immediately start pointing it out to the point and like to make it
- 54:43Track 3: uncomfortable again, like or to make it funny again. They just keep like pointing
- 54:46Track 3: out what they're doing. I think it's really clever.
- 54:49Track 2: There's a bunch of references to Ruth Buzzy, the comedic actors like Ruth Buzzy
- 54:55Track 2: and Jane Fonda for some reason.
- 54:57Track 2: Oh, yeah. The Three Mile Island. The kids want to watch Three Mile.
- 55:01Track 2: Or no, the kids want to watch China Syndrome again. Yeah.
- 55:03Track 2: Which I looked it up. That came out 12 days before the Three Mile Island disaster.
- 55:09Track 3: That's crazy.
- 55:10evan: It's just a crazy film that like a bunch of kids would have been watching.
- 55:14evan: Like, yeah, let's watch China Syndrome again. Not like, you know,
- 55:17evan: well, I guess Goonies hadn't come out yet. I don't know. Something.
- 55:19Track 3: Then like the Clute reference.
- 55:21Track 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:22evan: Clute. Oh, that would have been. Wait, what's the one? Oh, Parallax View hadn't come out.
- 55:27Track 3: Parallax View, yeah.
- 55:28evan: Wait, that came out after this. So that wouldn't have worked.
- 55:31Track 2: The line we always used to quote like in high school is, I need some lube for my pussy. My pussy.
- 55:37Track 2: it's pretty gross but like you know we were kids.
- 55:40evan: Yeah well.
- 55:42Track 3: I i love the uh the going into town scene too
- 55:44Track 3: because it's i don't know there's just something about it of like they're so excited
- 55:48Track 3: to go into town and like apparently this was
- 55:50Track 3: uh this goes back to like the earliest scripts like they had like they had this
- 55:55Track 3: all like written out like pretty early on but it's so good like it starts they're
- 55:58Track 3: like eating mcdonald's fries and then like it escalates to like they're getting
- 56:02Track 3: a pack of beer and they're smoking weed and then they're buying a bag of coke
- 56:06Track 3: and like robbing old it's great because.
- 56:09Track 2: It has the punchline when they
- 56:10Track 2: get back he's like it's great to go into town even if it's for only an.
- 56:13Track 3: Hour.
- 56:13evan: Or whatever that's so good yeah apparently
- 56:17evan: the part where they are doing like the pretending to
- 56:20evan: shoot heroin i think that uh showalter was like actually
- 56:22evan: nervous about that he's like oh you're not gonna like actually hit me
- 56:25evan: with the needle or anything right and and then i think in the and then
- 56:28evan: like behind in the behind the scenes they're like oh like
- 56:31evan: where did you get the heroin and he's like oh i think i what does
- 56:34evan: he joke he says i got it from i forget which cast member maybe
- 56:37evan: it was paul rutt i don't know like they like jokingly say that they got it from
- 56:41evan: one of the other cast members and it was just they all thought it was hilarious
- 56:43evan: so good that that scene was always one of my just like this is just so insane
- 56:48evan: and they come back and like they're not high anymore they're just like running
- 56:51evan: around yeah we didn't just do heroin 22 minutes ago or whatever we.
- 56:56Track 3: Didn't just like go through years and years yeah.
- 56:59Track 2: Junior garoffo is really funny there's a
- 57:01Track 2: There's a moment where she's with my great Mara and she tells her like,
- 57:05Track 2: oh yeah, I use moose for my hair. She goes, moose?
- 57:08Track 2: And she does like hand gestures for like a moose's antlers or whatever.
- 57:13evan: Oh i i don't think i mentioned this at the beginning but uh when
- 57:16evan: i was probably i don't know it's probably around this time like
- 57:19evan: the early 2000s i don't know if it was from this
- 57:22evan: or maybe because from dogman which came out what maybe like two or
- 57:25evan: three years after this i always had like the biggest crush on genie garofalo
- 57:28evan: and then when i like watch this like whenever i watched this movie i'm like
- 57:32evan: and especially in the behind the scenes she's just extremely funny obviously
- 57:36evan: she was like a standard stand of comedy and so that was kind of her she's like
- 57:40evan: good on her feet I do wonder,
- 57:43evan: you said that they originally wanted this to be improv.
- 57:46evan: Do you think that still some of the lines were? I couldn't find anything that's said.
- 57:50Track 3: I think the way it worked, I think David Wayne said it was kind of like do your
- 57:56Track 3: best type thing of try to follow the lines.
- 57:59Track 3: But a lot of these people hadn't been in a movie before.
- 58:02Track 3: And so it was like they had to kind of be loose with it. But Janine Ruffalo,
- 58:07Track 3: though, notably, on Air America with Sam Seder, she was like a big opponent
- 58:13Track 3: of the Iraq War and stuff. She was.
- 58:15Track 2: Oh, yeah.
- 58:15Track 3: I mean, she's still around. I say she died or something. She's still around.
- 58:20Track 3: She's still hanging out. But she's cool. Her and like Marc Maron and a few other comedians.
- 58:25Track 3: I think like Al Franken, who is
- 58:28Track 3: now, you know, sort of not in the public anymore. I don't know about it.
- 58:31Track 2: Yeah.
- 58:31Track 3: Yeah. they all showed up in the altman like miniseries tanner on tanner uh very
- 58:37Track 3: briefly but yeah a bunch of the air america people were were on.
- 58:40evan: There been in anything in a little while i don't think i.
- 58:44Track 3: Saw like a clip of her recently like yeah i don't know if she's doing like comedy
- 58:49Track 3: and stuff anymore of like was she on like a big sitcom or anything like is she
- 58:53Track 3: just like cashing like royalty checks now i have no idea.
- 58:56evan: I'm just looking at her like she's been in shows in the last you know like 10
- 59:01evan: 12 years but nothing more than like you know 10 episodes you know 10 episodes
- 59:06evan: here five there like shows i actually haven't even heard of i remember she was
- 59:09evan: on west wing for a little like that was a while ago now for a little bit she was on 24 in the.
- 59:14Track 2: Mid 2000s i know she still does stand-up
- 59:17Track 2: i remember i went i think it was like it was some like three-day festival in
- 59:21Track 2: austin fun fun fun fun fest or something like that or f.i.f something like that
- 59:26Track 2: whatever but um yeah she was doing stand-up in a tent so even when she wasn't
- 59:30Track 2: doing like movies or whatever i think like she's always steady she's a stand-up
- 59:34Track 2: you know she's old school like.
- 59:35Track 3: That yeah yeah.
- 59:36evan: I would i would.
- 59:37Track 3: See if she came to.
- 59:38evan: If she did a show i would definitely try i haven't seen her do stand-up before.
- 59:41Track 3: Yeah um i i just want to
- 59:44Track 3: talk more about ken marino's weird plot because
- 59:47Track 3: i love when uh joe latruglia is on the raft and they're like we won't want vic
- 59:52Track 3: back or whatever and he's like we all do sammy he's like my name's not sammy
- 59:56Track 3: and then he's like okay i'll go i'm gonna go get him guys and he just hops off
- 1:00:00Track 3: and like there's a motorcycle just waiting there that entire that entire scene.
- 1:00:04evan: To me is i know like of all like the things that are sort of like very satirical
- 1:00:09evan: and everything like that one just like with the music that also would be one
- 1:00:13evan: of the three montage i think you said there's three different montages in this like also like the.
- 1:00:17Track 3: Bale of hay in the in.
- 1:00:18evan: The in like the center of the road and he's like.
- 1:00:20Track 3: Oh fuck damn it got away slow motion jump over it yeah it's very like silent
- 1:00:25Track 3: movie kind of level humor just like a guy chasing another guy even.
- 1:00:30Track 2: In the 10 years later sequel they still keep up the bit of Camerino being a
- 1:00:34Track 2: virgin, which is really funny.
- 1:00:37Track 3: He's like, I want her inside.
- 1:00:40evan: Yeah, that's why I wrote that.
- 1:00:41Track 3: Maybe Michael St. Welty says that, but he's like, oh, she was talking to you.
- 1:00:44Track 3: That means she definitely wants to fuck me.
- 1:00:46Track 2: Yeah. Is she saying anything about me? She wants to fuck me?
- 1:00:49Track 2: Camerino's so funny because he was in the league and stuff.
- 1:00:52Track 2: I love a guy who's, because he looks like a jock.
- 1:00:56Track 2: I'm sure he probably was and he's super handsome, but also just fucking funny
- 1:01:00Track 2: as fuck and unafraid to make himself like stupid or whatever.
- 1:01:05Track 2: Like one of my favorites.
- 1:01:06evan: Yeah.
- 1:01:06Track 2: So good.
- 1:01:07Track 3: Party Down.
- 1:01:07evan: Party Down.
- 1:01:08Track 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:08evan: The first two seasons, or I guess the first, the original run of that show is
- 1:01:12evan: just some of the best, one of the best shows ever, I don't know. So good.
- 1:01:18Track 3: Yeah. Well, and, uh,
- 1:01:19Track 3: I like, it is such a great 80s parody too of like every single guy in this is
- 1:01:24Track 3: like, other girls are purely like objects of our desire.
- 1:01:29Track 3: And like, it's purely like a pursuit of like getting laid. And it's not like
- 1:01:33Track 3: anything deeper than that. Like we don't actually want to be friends with any of these girls.
- 1:01:37Track 3: Like, they're like, oh, we could just be friends. And it's like a huge letdown,
- 1:01:41Track 3: like the friend zone or whatever, you know, like.
- 1:01:44evan: Well that's like uh katie's uh like telling coop like you know like that they
- 1:01:49evan: they're not going to be together the next day and explaining she's like i like
- 1:01:53evan: you a lot but like paul rutt he's just really really really hot like i'm gonna
- 1:01:57evan: just have sex with him okay i'm 16 like that's explaining in there's.
- 1:02:04Track 2: A bit yeah in the prequel where it's like amy poehler has an affair with john
- 1:02:08Track 2: slattery from madman um roger sterling and uh like when they kind of a spoiler
- 1:02:15Track 2: but when they break it off she's like i'm only 16.
- 1:02:19evan: Which is really.
- 1:02:20Track 2: Funny because it's a.b. polar but she's like and she's like yeah one day you'll
- 1:02:23Track 2: make you'll make an underage girl very happy i was gonna say kim arena was also
- 1:02:27Track 2: in uh eastbound and down i always forget oh yeah he's so good in that yeah he
- 1:02:31Track 2: said yeah reno 911 like uh yeah children's hospital he's the man he.
- 1:02:37evan: Was It's also in, what was that show? I was just thinking about it.
- 1:02:41evan: It was only on, I think, like two, oh, Happy Endings. Have you seen that?
- 1:02:44Track 2: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:45Track 3: I don't think I've seen that.
- 1:02:46evan: That's a bunch of people.
- 1:02:47Track 3: There was a David Wayne show. It was called, like, Medical Police or something like that from 2020.
- 1:02:51evan: Oh, yeah.
- 1:02:51Track 3: I remember watching that, and it's really good. It's, like, up there with his
- 1:02:55Track 3: episodes he did of, like, Children's Hospital.
- 1:02:58evan: Oh, yeah. That movie, isn't that show, like, with, oh, God, I don't remember who else was in it.
- 1:03:04Track 3: It's, like, Rob Hubel.
- 1:03:05evan: Oh, right. I thought it was Rob Cordy.
- 1:03:08Track 3: Rob Corddry, yeah. Rob Corddry is the clown doctor.
- 1:03:12Track 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:13Track 3: There's a character named Dr. Jason Manzoukas, but he's not played by Jason
- 1:03:18Track 3: Manzoukas. It's a really good bit.
- 1:03:20evan: One of the other things that I saw in the documentary, I think they were going
- 1:03:24evan: to make Michael Showalter's character be like a murderer and it would be uncovered
- 1:03:30evan: that he killed a bunch of people but his parents apparently made him change
- 1:03:35evan: it because they thought it was the worst thing and it would have ruined the movie.
- 1:03:38evan: So they changed and they cut that whole part from it or something.
- 1:03:42evan: I'm pretty sure it was Michael Showalter and his parents because they do interview.
- 1:03:46evan: His parents were there, I think, as well as David Wayne's parents at the shooting
- 1:03:50evan: of this film. Which is cute.
- 1:03:52Track 3: The scene you mentioned when, what's her name? Katie or whatever.
- 1:03:56Track 3: She's like, yeah, I'm going to go be with Paul Rudd because he's chiseled.
- 1:03:59Track 3: He looks like he's chiseled out of marble.
- 1:04:01Track 3: I love the editing in that scene where it just keeps cutting back to Michael
- 1:04:04Track 3: Showalter. They're like nodding and smiling. He's just like, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
- 1:04:08Track 2: Yeah, I was going to say that that's one of like the funniest,
- 1:04:11Track 2: like kind of underrated parts of this film, especially in like the Molly Shannon scenes.
- 1:04:16Track 2: Like they're like reaction shots of the kids, especially that are just so fucking funny.
- 1:04:21Track 2: It will be like somebody be talking to those cuts to a kid and just looking
- 1:04:24Track 2: kind of like confused or whatever.
- 1:04:27Track 2: It's OK. It's a great touch.
- 1:04:29evan: And they weren't actors. They took out an ad in the newspaper to get the kids to be in this movie.
- 1:04:34evan: And they I mean, maybe them were like aspiring like child actors,
- 1:04:37evan: I guess could have been. But they also had a bunch of scenes with them,
- 1:04:40evan: like, interacting with the cast and, like, getting advice from them and just,
- 1:04:44evan: you know, these, it must have been so hysterical.
- 1:04:48Track 3: David Wayne talked about the audition for the kid that won't shower, the radio kid.
- 1:04:53Track 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:53Track 3: And he said, like, he was so bizarre, like, he was homeschooled.
- 1:04:57Track 3: And they were like, oh, like, what's that like being homeschooled?
- 1:04:59Track 3: And he's like, well, it's great because I'm the best kid in the class,
- 1:05:02Track 3: but also I'm the worst kid in the class.
- 1:05:04Track 3: Like, that's the letdown, you know? And they were like, okay, we have to hire this kid.
- 1:05:09Track 3: But apparently he was so bad at remembering lines or reading the script that
- 1:05:13Track 3: they got Sam Levine to dub over his lines from like Freaks and Geeks.
- 1:05:18Track 2: Yeah, it works well because in the prequel they have, they do a similar thing
- 1:05:22Track 2: where they like recast the kid, but they get Sam Levine to do the radio voice.
- 1:05:26Track 2: And then in the sequel, they actually just have Sam Levine as the beekeeper.
- 1:05:30evan: Yeah well the uh they also said that apparently the kid who goes water skiing
- 1:05:36evan: in the in the film they asked him to be like oh can you water ski is it call
- 1:05:39evan: you i can water ski and then he couldn't actually water ski so they had to like
- 1:05:43evan: figure out how to teach him to
- 1:05:44evan: water ski just for long enough to get that shot which i think is classic.
- 1:05:48Track 2: Actor thing to do.
- 1:05:49evan: Yeah of course i can do it like they probably assume you wouldn't actually have
- 1:05:52evan: to do it and they just were asking him and exactly Sure, I can ride a horse.
- 1:05:58Track 2: Your agent will tell you to do that. They'll be like, have you ever ridden a
- 1:06:01Track 2: horse? Yes. Okay, then put that on that you can ride a horse.
- 1:06:05Track 2: Can you imagine yourself on a horse? Put that down that you can ride a horse.
- 1:06:08Track 3: Can you imagine yourself speaking Spanish?
- 1:06:11Track 2: Right. Yeah. The Duolingo app. You got the ear. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:15evan: The other thing that was like a big thing in the documentary,
- 1:06:18evan: I think I asked you both if you had heard of the game Snaps,
- 1:06:21evan: which I think it might stand for something or whatever, But it's basically,
- 1:06:24evan: I remember kids playing this when I was younger, but I don't think I understood how to play.
- 1:06:29evan: And part of the running joke was a lot of the cats didn't understand for the
- 1:06:32evan: entire month how to play until like the last day.
- 1:06:35evan: They're having dinner and they're like, oh, I think I get how this game works.
- 1:06:39evan: And then they have them try and play and they still don't get it.
- 1:06:43Track 3: Do you, what is the, could you tell me the premise of the game?
- 1:06:46evan: The premise of the game is that you say is like the, so you think of,
- 1:06:50evan: or someone gives you like a celebrity or an actor or something.
- 1:06:53evan: and you then have to... One person is essentially the...
- 1:06:57evan: person giving the clues and then you have like the guesser i
- 1:07:00evan: guess or it could be multiple people and you have to say like the
- 1:07:03evan: name of the game is snaps or the name of the game isn't snaps if
- 1:07:05evan: you say it is that means you're gonna help spell
- 1:07:08evan: the name of the actor whereas if you isn't you're
- 1:07:12evan: gonna give a clue to them so like if the actor was you
- 1:07:14evan: know uh you know tom cruise and you
- 1:07:17evan: wanted to give the clue like mission impossible or something you could
- 1:07:20evan: say isn't and then you would have to snap and then the way
- 1:07:23evan: you would give the clue is the first letter of the sentence you said
- 1:07:26evan: was the letter of the word and then snapping was
- 1:07:30evan: vowel so it was like a is one snap b or uh i is two whatever and so on and so
- 1:07:36evan: you'd have to give them a few clues but they were like david wayne and a few
- 1:07:39evan: of them were like michael showwater were so good they would give like two or
- 1:07:42evan: three like clues and they'd be they would get it every time like in the in the scene they.
- 1:07:47Track 3: Were they were down in the theater kid minds like playing.
- 1:07:49evan: Yeah or like i don't know i mean they also could have edited in a way that it
- 1:07:52evan: like seemed like i don't know but sure it just this was a game that they were
- 1:07:55evan: just playing throughout it i think they apparently still play when they like
- 1:07:59evan: hang out with each other which is pretty well.
- 1:08:01Track 3: And notably uh david wayne i believe he said like he went to summer camp a few
- 1:08:07Track 3: years and then he became a camp.
- 1:08:08evan: Counselor like.
- 1:08:09Track 3: When he was 16 but all the other campers are like 15 so it's like yeah you're
- 1:08:13Track 3: one year older than everybody so it's like a lot of just like yeah go do your
- 1:08:17Track 3: own thing i'll go do my own thing like we're pretty much the same age like i'm
- 1:08:20Track 3: not gonna boss you around or whatever so it's a lot of hanging out.
- 1:08:23evan: Which is kind of the way that the counselors act
- 1:08:26evan: in this show like they're just basically there to hang
- 1:08:29evan: out except for molly shannon who's you know clearly older
- 1:08:33evan: than the rest of them and i always found her like
- 1:08:36evan: scene like the whole thing with her divorce and then later when you know the
- 1:08:40evan: husband comes or and he's like telling her to go away yeah judah free yeah it's
- 1:08:45evan: such a like that is hat it's a it's a really good like follow through of that
- 1:08:49evan: plot all the way she's like practicing the phone call like be strong yeah.
- 1:08:55Track 3: And the payoff that she's.
- 1:08:57evan: Gonna marry that marries the kid the kid's.
- 1:08:59Track 3: Really funny yeah he's great he's that's probably the best kid actor they got.
- 1:09:04evan: Oh I don't.
- 1:09:05Track 2: Want to sound like I'm talking against my gender excuse the Yiddish but we can
- 1:09:08Track 2: be real you know whatever but yeah he's really good and it's a great payoff
- 1:09:13Track 2: too yeah and again the rare Judah Freelander without his trekker hat.
- 1:09:18evan: Yeah yeah like he just got the big fro i.
- 1:09:20Track 3: Saw a funny clip of judah friedlander doing crowd work recently and like he's
- 1:09:24Track 3: like you know he asks the guy he's like where are you from and he's like israel
- 1:09:27Track 3: and he's like oh you mean palestine that's great he just keeps like hammering
- 1:09:31Track 3: on it like for like 10 minutes it's really yeah that rocks.
- 1:09:36evan: One of the things i was doing too this was i
- 1:09:39evan: don't i don't know if i told you this i think i made my last like letterbox
- 1:09:42evan: review was just this i was counting how many times a character uses the middle
- 1:09:46evan: finger in it yeah and i and i got i thought it was four the first time and then
- 1:09:50evan: i was just kind of then i was counting like if they did it twice like at the
- 1:09:54evan: same time it was mostly paul rudd who did it i think he has like three or four
- 1:09:57evan: of the five yeah it's early on when they do it a bunch and then they just stops doing it.
- 1:10:02Track 3: Yeah the the things you start noticing on like your 20th.
- 1:10:04evan: Or whatever.
- 1:10:05Track 3: Like yeah i only just started noticing how recycled the cast is like the outside
- 1:10:10Track 3: of the main characters like they clearly had a small cast And so they would
- 1:10:13Track 3: just move them around and like, uh, the one girl that's like the punk rock kid,
- 1:10:18Track 3: the one that's like 90 minutes.
- 1:10:20Track 3: That's like how long a mixtape is, which is a very stupid, like eighties line.
- 1:10:24Track 3: Yeah. Uh, she's in the like Godspell performance, like doing the lead.
- 1:10:28Track 3: Like they just move people around like all the time. So, yeah,
- 1:10:32Track 3: I think that was part of like the magic of this too was, uh,
- 1:10:35Track 3: you know, the low budget film.
- 1:10:37evan: That song was written for this, right? That the.
- 1:10:39Track 2: Oh, the, uh, the day by day. That's a song from Godspell. I actually looked
- 1:10:43Track 2: it up a little bit because, oh, sorry.
- 1:10:45evan: Not that one. Wasn't there like the other song?
- 1:10:48Track 3: The credit song?
- 1:10:49evan: Yeah, the credit song.
- 1:10:51evan: Did they write it?
- 1:10:52Track 3: I don't know. Yeah, I didn't hear about that.
- 1:10:54evan: But probably. Wait, what's the song you're talking about? You're talking about Day by Day.
- 1:10:57Track 2: Oh, yeah. I was saying, because I looked it up, like, Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar.
- 1:11:03Track 2: Like, in the 70s, there was this, like, there were all these,
- 1:11:06Track 2: like, musicals that were, like, Christian.
- 1:11:08Track 2: But, like, Christians hated them because they thought they were,
- 1:11:11Track 2: like, you know, sacrilegious or whatever. But I guess mainstream audiences.
- 1:11:15Track 3: Hey, Jesus Christ Superstar has some good songs. Yeah.
- 1:11:18Track 2: I mean, the performance of Day by Day in this is really good.
- 1:11:22Track 3: No actually I was booing when they did I.
- 1:11:25evan: Was saying it.
- 1:11:25Track 3: Was horrible it's funny cause just so you know all these performers suck dick
- 1:11:30Track 3: I love what she says that before they go up it's.
- 1:11:33Track 2: So funny and speaking of stuff like you I didn't realize until like this watch
- 1:11:36Track 2: like the audience not only are they booing but like they're hissing as well they're like.
- 1:11:41Track 3: Yeah it's so good yeah I was really loving the like the comedian that Michael
- 1:11:47Track 3: Schroelalter played I fucking was cracking up at that character I was like it's so stupid
- 1:11:51Track 3: stupid a lot of the jokes and the that stick with
- 1:11:54Track 3: me in this are just the the stupidest jokes like the crate and barrel box or
- 1:11:58Track 3: like yeah like the just weird little details like that or like the pottery shatter
- 1:12:03Track 3: sound effect uh that they use like 50 times like he throws the like garden shovel
- 1:12:08Track 3: and it's like like the cracking pottery sound yeah.
- 1:12:11evan: Oh so the song show me the fever which is the like the theme song was around
- 1:12:15evan: for the movie i don't does i.
- 1:12:17Track 3: Can't i.
- 1:12:17evan: Didn't see who wrote it or it's classic it sounds like a song that could have
- 1:12:21evan: been like you know journey or like you know i think jefferson starship is in
- 1:12:25evan: it a bunch like actual songs.
- 1:12:27Track 3: So yeah oh jay yeah a big notable thing and this is the licensed music because
- 1:12:32Track 3: this is like right before you it became very difficult to use licensed movie
- 1:12:37Track 3: music and movies because you used to be able to do what was called like a step
- 1:12:40Track 3: deal which was like you could get a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a,
- 1:12:43Track 3: music and movies for really cheap as long as the gross was under a certain amount
- 1:12:47Track 3: and if it went over that then you'd have to start paying more but because this
- 1:12:51Track 3: is so low budget and like didn't really make its money then they never really
- 1:12:54Track 3: had to worry about that yeah imagine if it had like been a runaway hit and they're.
- 1:12:57evan: Like having to pay you know.
- 1:12:59Track 3: Jefferson starship like.
- 1:13:00evan: A million dollars i don't know i don't know what.
- 1:13:02Track 3: They actually david wayne said they still like haven't paid the uh investors
- 1:13:06Track 3: back for this movie like they still are like every now and then they'll get
- 1:13:09Track 3: a little check and send it to the investors they.
- 1:13:12Track 2: Use it in the uh netflix uh sequels as well i love it like that intro yeah jane
- 1:13:19Track 2: by jefferson starship it's so sick it's one of my favorite.
- 1:13:22Track 3: It's very like days you're confused of like yeah they're all by the big bonfire
- 1:13:27Track 3: or whatever and like yeah.
- 1:13:28Track 2: I mean you've read it a few times but yeah when you asked about like our favorite
- 1:13:32Track 2: summer movies like yeah days you can choose i i've seen that movie probably
- 1:13:35Track 2: one of the only movies i've seen it's more than this one,
- 1:13:39Track 2: yeah I mean it's the first day of summer or whatever still going into Houston
- 1:13:43Track 2: to get the Marilsman tickets.
- 1:13:44Track 3: Oh that movie yeah this movie almost feels like an extension of that as well
- 1:13:49Track 3: like yeah kind of like Gen Xer somewhere.
- 1:13:51evan: The Dazed and Fused.
- 1:13:52Track 3: Oh yeah I'll just say that's probably.
- 1:13:54evan: One of the movies I've seen probably more than this like that and like the Big Lebowski Dazed.
- 1:13:57Track 3: And Fused yeah I feel like we'll probably talk about it on the show one day
- 1:14:02Track 3: maybe we can have you come by for it or something I love that I feel like inevitably
- 1:14:05Track 3: we'll do it just because it's like yeah a commonality between us actually.
- 1:14:10evan: I'm surprised i didn't suggest that because that would have been like a
- 1:14:13evan: not that this is like not an amazing movie but that also is uh such a so many
- 1:14:17evan: stories and actually the what was i just gonna say about it like i i hope i
- 1:14:21evan: know that there's a blu-ray but i want them to like come out with a i don't
- 1:14:25evan: know like a 4k with even more behind the scenes i actually don't have this movie
- 1:14:29evan: on uh blu-ray which i should .
- 1:14:32Track 3: Blu-ray is good. It didn't even come out that long ago either.
- 1:14:36Track 3: It took them a while to get it out, but it's really good. It looks great.
- 1:14:40evan: I know.
- 1:14:40Track 3: I need to get it.
- 1:14:42Track 2: How about Blu-ray? I remember when I was a kid, I got a five-day rental of Days
- 1:14:48Track 2: of Confused and watched it every night for five days.
- 1:14:51Track 2: I think I watched it twice one night. I love that movie.
- 1:14:54Track 3: Yeah i was excited talk about summer
- 1:14:57Track 3: you know has become a big summer movie for me after we
- 1:15:00Track 3: did altman was his movie oc and stiggs which
- 1:15:03Track 3: i have now watched every summer since we
- 1:15:06Track 3: covered it on the show because it's i think it's kind of in the vein of out
- 1:15:10Track 3: american summer a little bit too of like for sure parading it's parodying movies
- 1:15:14Track 3: that are like not even out yet like that's how ahead of the curve that movie
- 1:15:18Track 3: is and it's like kind of based on a national lampoon thing uh yeah and And it's a whole wild ride.
- 1:15:26Track 3: And it's kind of mean-spirited. Like, it's very fun.
- 1:15:29evan: Wait, what movie is this?
- 1:15:30Track 3: It's Robert Altman's film, O.C. and Stiggs.
- 1:15:33evan: Oh, I have not seen this.
- 1:15:34Track 3: I think it came out in, like, 87 or something.
- 1:15:37evan: Oh, yeah, 87. You got it right. I have not seen this. I'm going to have to check this out.
- 1:15:40Track 3: Check it out. It's good. I could send you a link to, like, a spreadsheet of
- 1:15:45Track 3: all. We have all of his movies linked in there.
- 1:15:46evan: Oh, yeah. I think I still have. You sent that to me at some point. I bet I still have it.
- 1:15:50Track 3: We have a Jonathan Demme one now, too, if you want to.
- 1:15:53evan: No, but I, but if you, if you, yeah, you should, if you remember to send it
- 1:15:57evan: to me after I, but it's funny.
- 1:15:58evan: I was just looking, you can buy Wet Hot American Summer Blu-ray for $9. So that's.
- 1:16:02Track 3: Hell yeah.
- 1:16:03Track 2: Hell yeah. Yeah.
- 1:16:04Track 3: Good deal.
- 1:16:05evan: That's kind of, in a way, like kind of makes me sad. It can't even make,
- 1:16:10evan: uh, you know, even at like websites that I've never, like oldies.com,
- 1:16:14evan: which I don't think I've ever, I wouldn't order from there, but it's $10 and 30 cents.
- 1:16:18evan: It's like 30 cents over, you know, market rate or whatever.
- 1:16:36Track 3: I have, like, a bunch of other notes just from watching the movie.
- 1:16:38evan: Oh, please.
- 1:16:39Track 3: It's mostly just, like, favorite bits.
- 1:16:41evan: Oh, yeah. Please. We haven't talked about everything yet.
- 1:16:43Track 3: The softball game bit is probably one of my favorites of, like,
- 1:16:46Track 3: we have to have the big culminating climactic softball game that was never established.
- 1:16:51Track 3: And, like, I love that he just is, like, we had a kooky training period.
- 1:16:55Track 3: It seemed like nothing was going to go right. Somehow we made it to the finals.
- 1:16:58Track 3: And, of course, we have the anonymously evil, like, rival camp.
- 1:17:02Track 2: Yeah.
- 1:17:02Track 3: And then the bus gets there and like, he's like, yeah, the kids aren't into
- 1:17:06Track 3: it. They said it's like trite. It's kind of hacky.
- 1:17:08evan: That's the best line that he says. It's trite. Like for me, that is the best line.
- 1:17:13Track 2: And the other coach goes, he goes, yeah, it is pretty hack. He's like,
- 1:17:18Track 2: they were totally cool with it.
- 1:17:19Track 3: Yeah. All right. Cool. Let's go back to hanging out.
- 1:17:24Track 3: Anytime there's like any semblance of like a plot starts coming in there,
- 1:17:28Track 3: like get that out of here.
- 1:17:29Track 2: I love when Paul Rudd's like, I'm writing down in my journal. I write in it every day.
- 1:17:36Track 3: Oh, you mean journal?
- 1:17:37evan: He's like, I'm not smart like you.
- 1:17:39Track 3: Smart people call it.
- 1:17:40Track 2: Yeah. Only like three people have access to this.
- 1:17:44evan: That scene also when he lets the kid just take the boat out and then he brings
- 1:17:48evan: it back too, like nicely.
- 1:17:50evan: He just glides into the dock.
- 1:17:54Track 3: The whole growth of the Gene character,
- 1:17:57Track 3: his sort of arc of like yeah he just is like really afraid to talk about what
- 1:18:02Track 3: he's gonna go do in private which was like his dick cream or his uh smearing
- 1:18:07Track 3: mud on his ass humping the fridge have.
- 1:18:09Track 2: A great winter i'm gonna go home to fridge.
- 1:18:11Track 3: But doesn't he get into the car.
- 1:18:14evan: At the end like is that his supposed to be his wife at the end.
- 1:18:16Track 3: I have no idea i love his outfit at the end though he looks amazing he's got
- 1:18:23Track 3: like the big glasses and like the white pants they.
- 1:18:25evan: Apparently filmed the like the scene where he humps the fridge and they like
- 1:18:28evan: sort of wheel it out they apparently did that a bunch of times and it's like
- 1:18:32evan: to get it just to get it right i guess and like i don't know.
- 1:18:36Track 3: They told the kids to leave i actually.
- 1:18:40evan: Wonder that too like there's never a scene where uh one of the uh what is it
- 1:18:44evan: uh who was it one of them makes out with one of the kids like in front of the.
- 1:18:48Track 3: Yeah and she's like.
- 1:18:49evan: You snooze you lose.
- 1:18:50Track 3: Yeah yeah the girl that ken marino is going after like can't she kiss a child,
- 1:18:56Track 3: I don't know they might have just been like you know because we see her from
- 1:19:00Track 3: behind I guess I'm making out with myself type yeah Abby Bernstein,
- 1:19:05Track 3: Abby yeah yeah yeah um,
- 1:19:08Track 3: And then, yeah, and then, what's his name?
- 1:19:11Track 3: Michael Showalter's, like, arc in the movie as well of, like,
- 1:19:15Track 3: you know, that's another montage of, like, he's training with Gene of,
- 1:19:19Track 3: like, doing, like, dances.
- 1:19:21evan: Oh, I love it. Like, that's, like, that gave me, like, very Karate Kid vibes.
- 1:19:25evan: I mean, I guess that's kind of what they're going for.
- 1:19:26Track 3: Yeah, snatching the thing out of his hand.
- 1:19:28Track 2: One of, like, the hardest scenes to watch is when Coop is calling his parents.
- 1:19:32Track 2: and he's like i know you guys have uh worried about me having trouble meeting
- 1:19:38Track 2: women well worry no more like well.
- 1:19:41evan: Do you think.
- 1:19:42Track 2: Raflow's staring at him like.
- 1:19:43evan: Being like oh.
- 1:19:44Track 2: Yeah it's so good it's so good because he's like i don't know but.
- 1:19:48Track 3: She does have a big nose clearly.
- 1:19:51Track 2: Yeah yeah it's so
- 1:19:54Track 2: funny because like that i've 100 have done
- 1:19:57Track 2: that you know as a teenager at some point was like well my
- 1:20:00Track 2: troubles are over i found the
- 1:20:03Track 2: one yeah fuck you i found a girlfriend so i wait he's like i'm gonna marry her
- 1:20:09Track 2: like they're 16 yeah yeah and then when he sees like when he sees her talking
- 1:20:17Track 2: to paul rudd and he like walks away and he's like yeah he's like pumps his fists oh another great paul.
- 1:20:23evan: Rudd scene is when michael showalter goes to talk to him in the bunk and he's
- 1:20:26evan: like i talked to you for a second he's like that was a second.
- 1:20:28Track 2: It's like even longer.
- 1:20:31Track 3: For a second you wanted to talk more than a second oh.
- 1:20:34Track 2: There's a great bit in the prequel
- 1:20:37Track 2: where like it's this girl and she's doing cheers by herself on
- 1:20:40Track 2: the porch she's like boys go to jupiter to
- 1:20:43Track 2: get more stupider girls go to mars and these superstars
- 1:20:46Track 2: and then she like runs to a stall and like
- 1:20:49Track 2: she has her first period or whatever and then like as she's talking through
- 1:20:52Track 2: the stall so like uh the other women she's like her voice suddenly drops and
- 1:20:57Track 2: like when she went in it was a child actress and then like she's talking and
- 1:21:01Track 2: then her voice drops and then when it walks out it's like adult abby and suddenly
- 1:21:06Track 2: she's like into boys or whatever yeah it's pretty good bit oh man.
- 1:21:10evan: I gotta i have to i was saying i was i need to it's been a while since i've seen the cool david.
- 1:21:14Track 3: Wayne loves like switching out one guy for like a texas switch or like uh.
- 1:21:19Track 2: Yeah like joe latrugio.
- 1:21:21Track 3: And this like the guy on the motorcycle with the.
- 1:21:22Track 2: Very clear wig on yeah because
- 1:21:26Track 2: there's like uh yeah there's one shot where they had they showed joe lutruglio
- 1:21:30Track 2: and he has this crazy wig and they come back to him again and then he has a
- 1:21:33Track 2: normal wig on it's just like yeah this stuntman like uh yeah clearly like it's
- 1:21:38Track 2: like some stunt guy they do that in with like in like a dance sequence with like paul red yeah they.
- 1:21:43Track 3: Do that with the little kids too when they throw him from the van david wayne specifically said that.
- 1:21:47Track 2: Oh yeah he's like there's a guy in new york he's like.
- 1:21:50Track 3: Kind of a he's like a little person he's like four feet tall or something and
- 1:21:53Track 3: like literally like that's what he he does is like he does you need like someone
- 1:21:57Track 3: to be a child stunt actor and so yeah they're like here's a couple hundred bucks like.
- 1:22:02evan: Toss you.
- 1:22:03Track 3: From the van a couple times two different outfits.
- 1:22:05evan: And you're.
- 1:22:06Track 3: Good to go.
- 1:22:06evan: I that's awesome one of the
- 1:22:09evan: one of the other that like these are they're like things that i've
- 1:22:12evan: i've noticed and seen a bunch of time but there's a scene early on
- 1:22:15evan: where there's a bunch of kids that are just sort of like hiking in the
- 1:22:17evan: woods and every single one of them has like not a game boy because i hadn't
- 1:22:21evan: come out yet but like you know like an electronic gaming thing or whatever it
- 1:22:25evan: is playing you know asteroid or something and it just uh like and they're also
- 1:22:29evan: they mentioned how they went to go see the movie again like they're watching
- 1:22:33evan: like movies and playing video games it seems like a very loose structured camp,
- 1:22:37evan: it didn't seem like that from before yeah.
- 1:22:41Track 3: They're doing ipad.
- 1:22:42Track 2: Kids stuff in 1981 i looked up because they say exactly what day it is in the
- 1:22:48Track 2: movie and i looked it up and like nothing happened that day like the most boring is last day in history.
- 1:22:53Track 3: Well apparently it was 1979 the sky lab was going to crash to earth but it landed
- 1:23:00Track 3: in like australia but i think david wayne said he was at camp when that happened
- 1:23:05Track 3: and they were like wondering if it was going to like hit the camp,
- 1:23:09Track 3: yeah it's gonna hit this very specific camp like.
- 1:23:12evan: They built a huge like the thing they built apparently was like enormous and
- 1:23:17evan: took them i think it's like five days to build the like the model sky lab thing they had yeah.
- 1:23:23Track 2: Oh um it's august 18th 1981 there was like a patent for some random type of
- 1:23:30Track 2: cigarette that no one bought like it's just a very like chill day one of the
- 1:23:36Track 2: chillest days in all of american history the.
- 1:23:39Track 3: Day where truly nothing happened yeah.
- 1:23:42evan: We're talking about like the politics of it and i think you could probably argue
- 1:23:46evan: that if you if we had like covered this plus like the prequel and like you have
- 1:23:50evan: like the reagan stuff like you kind of get a little bit of it but more and just
- 1:23:54evan: like we're just making fun of this i don't know that it's like overtly meant
- 1:23:57evan: to be like political statement yeah for.
- 1:24:01Track 2: Sure michael showalter his reagan
- 1:24:04Track 2: is so good like he played like his older
- 1:24:07Track 2: coop is like obviously very awkward for community effect but his
- 1:24:10Track 2: reagan is like pretty spot on um yeah and i was gonna say like this is like
- 1:24:15Track 2: the i don't know it's like the best version of like uh gen x but like people
- 1:24:19Track 2: forget like marjorie taylor green elon musk peter till these are all gen xers
- 1:24:23Track 2: right like they may be getting something of a pass still but it won't last forever you.
- 1:24:30evan: Know yeah.
- 1:24:30Track 3: They talk just like the uh you know the same people.
- 1:24:35Track 2: I was going to say, because it's like that happened, like I said,
- 1:24:38Track 2: basically from boomers onward.
- 1:24:40Track 2: But like, if you go back to like that boomer generation and the hippies and
- 1:24:43Track 2: like everyone in the 60s, it's like, you know, they see like the Kennedys die.
- 1:24:48Track 2: They see JF or they see like MLK get shot.
- 1:24:52Track 2: They see like Fred Hampton get murdered.
- 1:24:55Track 2: yeah so like all these people either straight
- 1:24:58Track 2: up get murdered or like get hooked on drugs and
- 1:25:01Track 2: die from that and everyone who's left over basically
- 1:25:04Track 2: gets bought out right like they're the eagles or whatever
- 1:25:07Track 2: you know or yeah or like
- 1:25:10Track 2: bobby seal doing a cooking show or whatever and like
- 1:25:13Track 2: so it's like kind of like not like to excuse
- 1:25:16Track 2: it but it's like you know i guess it's like
- 1:25:18Track 2: well they killed everybody they killed everyone who really cared or
- 1:25:21Track 2: whatever and then that kind of like carries is over into
- 1:25:24Track 2: like you know watch your step and then you kind of
- 1:25:27Track 2: get shit like you're like stuff that's really apolitical i mean i
- 1:25:29Track 2: feel like even like taylor swift kind of people give her
- 1:25:32Track 2: shit for never she never said anything about like pound sign
- 1:25:35Track 2: or whatever which like it is true like because at some point like
- 1:25:38Track 2: those few it's just it's a it's a money thing right
- 1:25:41Track 2: it's corporate and that's why everything kind of sucks is because everything's
- 1:25:44Track 2: just very corporate or whatever but like at the same
- 1:25:47Track 2: time it's like like by not saying anything that in and of itself becomes a huge
- 1:25:52Track 2: statement you know because it's like this happened you know the past almost
- 1:25:56Track 2: two years have happened and you know uh if you if you haven't said anything
- 1:26:01Track 2: at this point like why not you know that in and of itself yeah yeah like.
- 1:26:05Track 3: Neutrality in times of oppression you're siding with the oppressor right like.
- 1:26:09Track 2: It's like imagine like like we don't go back to like oh yeah there's
- 1:26:12Track 2: this really funny like comedic film from germany
- 1:26:15Track 2: from 1943 it's completely apolitical it
- 1:26:18Track 2: has nothing to do with what was going on like you can appreciate just
- 1:26:22Track 2: like as a movie like no one does you know what i mean like it's even fucking
- 1:26:25Track 2: like it's crazy to me like i mean this sort of is in the discourse of superman
- 1:26:29Track 2: i guess like imagine if like they had made superman and he was like you know
- 1:26:32Track 2: what i'm actually not going to address the whole like world war ii thing like
- 1:26:35Track 2: i'm going to kind of stay out of it or whatever like this is so crazy to me that's.
- 1:26:40Track 3: Why i'll never forgive the minions for what they did you know
- 1:26:43Track 3: Hiding out during World War II.
- 1:26:46Track 2: Yeah, I mean, even fucking like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck were addressing the fascist situation.
- 1:26:55Track 2: But like you couldn't, you know, you couldn't say anything.
- 1:26:59evan: This like maybe is partly related to like the corporation. I was thinking about this.
- 1:27:03evan: I think maybe someone wrote an article that I saw on somewhere.
- 1:27:07evan: but just like the idea that people like you don't really people don't give celebrities
- 1:27:11evan: shit anymore for like selling.
- 1:27:13Track 2: Out and doing.
- 1:27:13evan: Commercials for like everything like think of how many commercials every celebrity
- 1:27:18evan: you see in any movie is in nowadays not.
- 1:27:20Track 2: Dude everything.
- 1:27:21Track 3: So you have to go to japan so people so americans wouldn't like lose their trust exactly.
- 1:27:26evan: And like so.
- 1:27:27Track 3: It's just thinking yeah.
- 1:27:28Track 2: We talk about all the time because like i was watching like pluto tv and i saw
- 1:27:32Track 2: fucking like ryan seacrest doing uh he was doing an ad for like a mobile gaming casino called like,
- 1:27:39Track 2: uh like poke choco it was a really good name.
- 1:27:43Track 3: I forget what it was.
- 1:27:44Track 2: Yeah i wish it was so it was so weird but like you
- 1:27:47Track 2: see that all like eva longoria i saw her i'm like
- 1:27:50Track 2: didn't she just do a fucking like uh fucking cheetos
- 1:27:53Track 2: movie i don't know but they're like the office people they're like doing i mean
- 1:27:58Track 2: you see that a lot i mean even like big stars like uh i don't like uh chris
- 1:28:03Track 2: pratt and the monopoly go ads yeah oh yeah yeah those are the ray-ban commercials
- 1:28:09Track 2: with uh chris hemsworth and chris pratt like i.
- 1:28:13Track 3: Was telling you i saw one recently for aura with robert.
- 1:28:17Track 2: Downey jr.
- 1:28:18Track 3: And i was like what is.
- 1:28:18Track 2: Robert downey.
- 1:28:19Track 3: Jr he has billions of dollars by now he must like with a b.
- 1:28:24Track 2: Matt damon larry uh larry david uh all the crypto spike lee all did crypto commercials
- 1:28:31Track 2: see we should like not that's not cool we that i like the.
- 1:28:35Track 3: Spike lee one was like particularly bad because it was like.
- 1:28:38Track 2: Because it's selling it to african-american people yeah exactly it was like black people this.
- 1:28:42Track 3: Is our new currency or whatever.
- 1:28:43Track 2: It's so credit to me what are you doing bro and we
- 1:28:47Track 2: should we should give these people so much more shit i mean matt mcconaughey
- 1:28:50Track 2: still does it but i'll never forget the one because i watch you know
- 1:28:53Track 2: i went to uc so i watch all the football games but there's a crypto commercial that
- 1:28:55Track 2: i always play where he's like well ai ever gain sentience or
- 1:28:59Track 2: gain consciousness well we and i'm like fuck
- 1:29:02Track 2: you dude like maybe not you specifically will ever gain consciousness because
- 1:29:05Track 2: you're a fucking dullard but like yeah we already have man keep up you know
- 1:29:09Track 2: like i uh i hate that shit but thank you for reminding me i'll make a list of
- 1:29:13Track 2: every every celebrity who ever did a fucking crypto commercial or any sort of
- 1:29:17Track 2: gambling uh related like online that shit is evil dude yeah.
- 1:29:23evan: Well, now it's like, I mean, to even go further, like basically there's someone I think wrote a,
- 1:29:28evan: either wrote a book or maybe they were talking about this of also how just like
- 1:29:31evan: the sports industry and all the sports networks are basically just in bed with
- 1:29:36evan: gambling, like sports gambling.
- 1:29:38Track 3: It's like unwatchable now.
- 1:29:40evan: Yeah. Crypto Arena or something.
- 1:29:42Track 2: It hits me.
- 1:29:43evan: Or whatever.
- 1:29:44Track 2: Yeah. The prevalence of like, yeah, like sports gambling and stuff.
- 1:29:48Track 3: Like now they just show the like odds numbers during games and stuff.
- 1:29:52Track 2: Described them completely like corrupted it yeah
- 1:29:55Track 2: how quickly like the mainstream and like the networks and the leagues themselves
- 1:30:00Track 2: have embraced it and there's already like multiple like uh scandals right regarding
- 1:30:04Track 2: players like fixing because that's why we kept it out of we kept gambling out
- 1:30:08Track 2: of sports for so long because this is what happens right they're gonna start
- 1:30:11Track 2: fixing games and it's been for a while and start uh.
- 1:30:14Track 3: Being like yeah i'll throw this.
- 1:30:15Track 2: Game yeah probably like um
- 1:30:18Track 2: fucking it has made sports unwatchable as someone
- 1:30:21Track 2: who like my whole life i've loved fucking sports it has
- 1:30:24Track 2: made it literally unwatchable to me and like i
- 1:30:27Track 2: i remember seeing a video and i think they said within like
- 1:30:30Track 2: the first five years like 2019 to 2024 i think people lost something americans
- 1:30:36Track 2: lost like 250 billion dollars like on sports gambling and that's all just an
- 1:30:41Track 2: upward transfer of wealth that's all that's happening right they're just taking
- 1:30:44Track 2: poor people's money and giving it to the rich as they do with every fucking thing in this country.
- 1:30:48evan: People stop playing the lottery and they need to find a new way to steal your
- 1:30:51evan: money. I mean, I guess you could argue...
- 1:30:52Track 2: It's the same thing with...
- 1:30:53Track 3: Yeah well i was gonna say.
- 1:30:55Track 2: It's the same thing with crypto like i like these are these are theoretically
- 1:30:58Track 2: currencies right that you would use to buy stuff but instead it's just pump
- 1:31:02Track 2: and dump schemes it's like yeah.
- 1:31:03Track 3: Like it's literally just meant to be bought and sold yeah and traded yeah and
- 1:31:07Track 3: i think you know i don't i forget how we got dealt this rabbit hole but like,
- 1:31:11Track 3: gambling and sports like that it ruins sports like socially too because it makes
- 1:31:16Track 3: people like oh yeah angry like they don't longer just like they just want to
- 1:31:20Track 3: see their team win it's like Now there's money involved and like now that it's like personal.
- 1:31:25Track 2: It becomes really sad.
- 1:31:27Track 3: Yeah.
- 1:31:28Track 2: I went to Vegas once and I gambled it because I wanted to play the tables,
- 1:31:32Track 2: you know, like, uh, like I went to the old part of Vegas.
- 1:31:34Track 2: I don't want to play to anyone, but it was like a once in a lifetime thing for
- 1:31:37Track 2: me. But like, I don't do it online or, you know, whatever, or any of the apps.
- 1:31:41Track 2: I knew someone who like, I, it's okay if I guess I don't say his name,
- 1:31:44Track 2: but I had a coworker here.
- 1:31:45Track 2: I knew like quit drinking, but he was like a degenerate gambler and that's all
- 1:31:49Track 2: he would talk about. and I'm like Las Vegas sober yeah I was like that's a great
- 1:31:53Track 2: that's great dude yeah I was like is this any better because like this is still
- 1:31:57Track 2: pretty sad to me you know yeah.
- 1:31:58Track 3: I'm Nevada sober I stopped drinking but.
- 1:32:00Track 2: Now I'm addicted to gambling yeah that's crazy and like we watch like we love
- 1:32:05Track 2: Bob but he's like a notorious gambler and honestly like it's really funny Robert
- 1:32:09Track 2: Allman but like big gambler but when he does it it's usually pretty funny because
- 1:32:13Track 2: it's not like sad it's like Harry Belafonte doing prints right it's a little less sad.
- 1:32:17Track 3: Oh there happens to be a horse track right by the set that we're shooting on how.
- 1:32:20Track 2: Convenient oh shooting a whole movie because it's close to a horror series track
- 1:32:24Track 2: like that is that's I mean but he's got the he always had the money you know
- 1:32:28Track 2: the gambler's gene yeah going there with Bella Fonte and stuff yeah,
- 1:32:34Track 2: oh it's Marvin Van Peebles I think yeah Melvin Van Peebles sorry yeah.
- 1:32:39Track 3: Uh that was for oc and stiggs the movie we were talking about i think we've
- 1:32:42Track 3: kind of gone off on a tangent which is i don't know i don't.
- 1:32:45Track 2: I don't remember.
- 1:32:45evan: Exactly where we're a guy.
- 1:32:47Track 2: Oh because we were and we were talking about sort of
- 1:32:50Track 2: like uh just like tangentially the commercials the
- 1:32:53Track 2: cast of this movie right like like yeah well i
- 1:32:56Track 2: mean because this is a very janex thing right like it used to be sort of
- 1:32:59Track 2: faux pas to sell out right
- 1:33:01Track 2: but i think i saw it happen like with the millennials like because
- 1:33:05Track 2: at that point people had stopped buying music and they were
- 1:33:07Track 2: like look the only way we can get any sort of attention or money is by doing
- 1:33:10Track 2: an itunes commercial so the whole idea of like selling out as like a negative
- 1:33:15Track 2: thing sort of went away and now it's the opposite everything is hyper commercialized
- 1:33:19Track 2: everything like every interaction every social interaction is like hyper commodified
- 1:33:24Track 2: and stuff here's the idea like.
- 1:33:25Track 3: Here's how we can tie it in i just saw a nintendo switch 2 commercial with paul
- 1:33:31Track 3: rudd and joe latrullio in it.
- 1:33:33Track 2: So there you go and he's He's.
- 1:33:36Track 3: Recreating an ad he did in the 80s for the Super Nintendo, and he's wearing
- 1:33:41Track 3: the same outfit and, like, hair and everything.
- 1:33:43Track 3: And it's, like, nostalgia bait, and it's like, hey, it's Paul Rudd,
- 1:33:48Track 3: and, like, Joe LaTrulio also happens to be there.
- 1:33:52Track 2: They Ant-Manned him, dude. So hard. I hate that.
- 1:33:54evan: I just don't understand, as you said, like, with some of these people as...
- 1:33:59evan: They have, most of them have so much money, but I guess what's a little more?
- 1:34:07Track 2: Like Ryan Seacrest. Why is he doing Pluto mobile app gaming app commercials? Or like Eva Longoria.
- 1:34:13Track 3: They made you the new Dick Clark.
- 1:34:15evan: There must be some nefarious reason. Like he owes the mob money or I don't know.
- 1:34:21Track 3: Nicholas Cage, he bought a bunch of artifacts that he now has to pay for or whatever.
- 1:34:27Track 2: Like eva longoria was like
- 1:34:30Track 2: she was on desperate housewives which was a show that went into syndication
- 1:34:33Track 2: she was a producer i believe on ugly betty
- 1:34:36Track 2: she produced that cheetah movie like she's
- 1:34:40Track 2: married to tony parker still i think like these people
- 1:34:43Track 2: do not need this money like it's crazy you know it's like
- 1:34:46Track 2: why i don't get it so like it does kill
- 1:34:48Track 2: their aura it totally like makes it to where like i think there was like an
- 1:34:52Track 2: uber eats commercial with like adam driver pedro pascal or something like that
- 1:34:55Track 2: and it's like that that person you can't be a movie star after that you know
- 1:34:59Track 2: like timothy chalamet doing like a high fashion yeah that's fine i'll give it
- 1:35:04Track 2: a pass you know one man who's never been in a commercial yeah.
- 1:35:06Track 3: You do like a cologne commercial or whatever you know yeah it's like all right.
- 1:35:10Track 2: That's okay yeah but like one man who's never done a commercial robert pattinson
- 1:35:14Track 2: you know that's why he's the last true living movie star i think he's done like.
- 1:35:18Track 3: Cologne ads like we said but yeah otherwise.
- 1:35:21Track 2: Yeah like high fat if you're doing like you're doing the black Black and white.
- 1:35:24Track 3: Like you're rolling around in a bed.
- 1:35:25Track 2: That's fine. Slow motion. That's fine. Yeah, that's cool. If it's like high.
- 1:35:32evan: If it's a cigarette ad, I think I could maybe give it a price.
- 1:35:34Track 3: Or if you're Jim Varney doing Ernest, you're already in my book.
- 1:35:39Track 3: I mean, a camel cigarette goes back to Ernest.
- 1:35:42evan: Haynes underwear, like back when, like, you know.
- 1:35:44Track 3: You need to be a celebrity from commercials if you're going to do it.
- 1:35:48Track 3: You can't be a celebrity doing commercials.
- 1:35:50evan: Yes, right.
- 1:35:51Track 3: Ernest, you're famous. Or we just don't do advertising. That's the...
- 1:35:57Track 3: the ideal outcome.
- 1:35:59evan: What's so funny though is like so many ads now that people are getting are generally
- 1:36:04evan: on like your phone or a tablet or things like you don't even.
- 1:36:07Track 2: Get like.
- 1:36:08evan: You're not even necessarily even watching most of it so i guess the idea is
- 1:36:12evan: they will pay these celebrities enough they're like oh like paul rhodes in this
- 1:36:15evan: i guess i'll watch this ad or something i don't know this is just my theory yeah.
- 1:36:20Track 3: And it's an it's it's like the commercial from when i was a kid so it's i remember this.
- 1:36:24evan: Yeah i.
- 1:36:25Track 3: Remember that type thing.
- 1:36:27Track 2: It makes like um it makes
- 1:36:31Track 2: tv unwatchable i think there's like a direct tv commercial
- 1:36:34Track 2: and it's like paul giamatti and steve uscemi doing voiceover like they're pigeons
- 1:36:41Track 2: yeah it's like pigeons watching me cable yeah i'm like is that fucking paul
- 1:36:47Track 2: giamatti and steve like that's that's a bummer dude like that's yeah that's weird.
- 1:36:51Track 3: That's so weird.
- 1:36:52Track 2: Like but we talked I mean there's like plenty of filmmakers who talk about like
- 1:36:56Track 2: they can't they don't really have money if they live he takes a paycheck and
- 1:37:00Track 2: you're like that sucks you know like ah man but I don't get it I don't know
- 1:37:04Track 2: economically what is going on in Hollywood right now complete mystery to me absolutely yeah.
- 1:37:09Track 3: I wouldn't imagine that David.
- 1:37:11evan: Wayne is like you know she's probably doing alright but not.
- 1:37:14Track 3: Yeah you know he uh he hasn't made a movie since that uh Netflix movie uh,
- 1:37:21Track 3: A stupid and futile gesture about like Doug Kinney from National Lampoon,
- 1:37:26Track 3: which we've talked about it on the show multiple times and I forget why.
- 1:37:31Track 3: Maybe it has to do with like period movies being made now.
- 1:37:34Track 3: And like, yeah, there's like, you know, you have like an inherent vice or like
- 1:37:38Track 3: the master or, you know, a well done period movie.
- 1:37:42Track 3: And then you have like American Hustle and like things where it's like,
- 1:37:46Track 3: oh, they're wearing wigs, you know?
- 1:37:47Track 2: Type thing yeah it kind of ties into like
- 1:37:50Track 2: this film because yeah like because like this
- 1:37:53Track 2: film it's a period piece but it's like it's still really well done
- 1:37:56Track 2: even though it's like a comedy uh and stuff but yeah
- 1:37:59Track 2: the the duck kinney film it's like yeah i don't know if
- 1:38:02Track 2: it's because it's shot digitally so it's like i always feel
- 1:38:05Track 2: like there will be this like weird uncanny thing of like digital film
- 1:38:08Track 2: looks better it's higher quality but it makes everything look worse because you
- 1:38:11Track 2: see how it actually looks there's not like that distorting layer whatever that
- 1:38:14Track 2: you get with like the organic uh process of film
- 1:38:17Track 2: but yeah the duck kinney movie like it it's so
- 1:38:20Track 2: off-putting like because we talk about american hustle it's like
- 1:38:23Track 2: it's a film that's a period piece but it's so much looks like modern day people
- 1:38:26Track 2: pretending and that's how that duck kinney feel that like david wayne movie
- 1:38:30Track 2: so it felt like yeah like it was like people like uh it was like modern comedians
- 1:38:35Track 2: like just doing dress up and pretending to be like the original snl people and it's like ugh.
- 1:38:41Track 3: It's like in The Irishman when Jim Norton shows up as Don Rickles and it's like
- 1:38:46Track 3: that's Jim Norton it's like that.
- 1:38:48Track 2: I tortured myself the other day by watching the SNL the Reitman Jason Reitman SNL film.
- 1:38:53Track 3: Oh yes yes Saturday Night yeah.
- 1:38:55Track 2: That's another in the genre of like it's just it's literally just like kids
- 1:38:59Track 2: pretending to be like oh hey look and some of them are actually pretty good
- 1:39:03Track 2: like the guy who plays Dan Ackroyd is pretty good obviously the guy from New Girl So, yeah, like,
- 1:39:10Track 2: the guy is Chevy, but, like, it's so clearly it's just, like,
- 1:39:14Track 2: TikTok, SNL, you know?
- 1:39:16Track 3: Well, and with the We're Not American Summer, too, I think it's funny.
- 1:39:20Track 3: Like, yeah, like, I saw the opening of this movie, the slow-mo of them at the bonfire.
- 1:39:26Track 3: I was like, damn, like, this is 2001, and I was like, that wasn't that long
- 1:39:31Track 3: ago. And this looks so good.
- 1:39:33Track 3: Like, it just looks like a movie. Like, yeah.
- 1:39:36Track 2: They recreate it sort of they do like an updated version
- 1:39:39Track 2: at the beginning of the prequel uh first day
- 1:39:42Track 2: of camp or whatever and it's so like
- 1:39:45Track 2: it's kind of a bummer honestly seeing them side to side it's like i remember
- 1:39:49Track 2: someone showed like footage from the original matrix and then like from the
- 1:39:53Track 2: newest one and you're like oh like uh like them shot on film oh my god it looks
- 1:39:58Track 2: so fucking good and then the modern day matrix is just like it's like a fucking
- 1:40:01Track 2: commercial it's just you know this sucks It's just flat and small.
- 1:40:05evan: What's crazy about the bonfire scene in this one is they had a hard time filming it because of the rain.
- 1:40:12evan: They filmed that in the middle of the night. Finally, it stopped raining.
- 1:40:16evan: They are able to build the fire with wood they had to bring in because all the
- 1:40:20evan: wood was wet from all the rain. It looks so good.
- 1:40:24Track 3: Yeah, the camp director or whatever for the camp that they were using had to
- 1:40:28Track 3: build them a fire, I think.
- 1:40:29evan: Oh, I don't know if I saw that.
- 1:40:31Track 3: Work their magic. but the camp also.
- 1:40:32evan: Saw the film afterwards they didn't know they thought it was supposed to be
- 1:40:35evan: a family comedy and they were apparently.
- 1:40:37Track 3: Horrified which i
- 1:40:39Track 3: think is pretty funny like the critical response to
- 1:40:42Track 3: this like uh was really bad because i and i
- 1:40:45Track 3: think one of the best bits is that they took this to sundance and
- 1:40:48Track 3: it screened it's at sundance it was one of the like 200 movies chosen or whatever
- 1:40:52Track 3: like i'm just imagining a sundance crowd watching this like what the fuck like
- 1:40:57Track 3: this like it just looks like porkies or whatever like meatballs yeah like but
- 1:41:02Track 3: it's like clearly like tongue-in-cheek and like esoteric in a weird way and.
- 1:41:06Track 2: They didn't have like the thing of like oh all of these people are famous now you know it's like.
- 1:41:11Track 3: Who are these people are these weird weird yeah isn't the guy from frazier yeah
- 1:41:17Track 3: yeah the guy from frazier's in this he got uh yeah.
- 1:41:21Track 2: I was gonna i forgot i was wanting to look up how many emmys he had it by this
- 1:41:24Track 2: point because it's crazy like I.
- 1:41:26Track 3: Don't like that.
- 1:41:27Track 2: Show is fucking huge like Frasier is so it does feel like a pro I mean if anything
- 1:41:33Track 2: I feel like he's the guy that really gives this film credibility and Janine Garofalo I think.
- 1:41:38Track 3: Whenever like a got an actor like that will do a movie like this i always like
- 1:41:43Track 3: gain so much respect for them i'm like for sure yeah they see the vision and
- 1:41:47Track 3: get it and he came back yeah same with bradley cooper he had three emmys three oh.
- 1:41:51Track 2: That's see that's crazy like imagine being like yeah the guy on fraser who had
- 1:41:56Track 2: three emmys and you're like making this film with a bunch of like honestly nobodies you know.
- 1:42:00Track 3: Yeah this guy hosted like snl and it's like this guy's had an mtv show that
- 1:42:04Track 3: was also not very popular yeah yeah.
- 1:42:08evan: He also had a swell yeah he had he'd been nominated he was nominated every year
- 1:42:12evan: from 1994 to 2004 for fraser.
- 1:42:15Track 3: Oh wow that's incredible and he won four of.
- 1:42:17evan: Them three of them.
- 1:42:18Track 3: Only won two tonys too uh after this but still i mean truly slumming it like you.
- 1:42:25Track 2: Know like doing everyone a real.
- 1:42:27Track 3: Like jeff daniels doing dumb and dumber like level yeah I mean,
- 1:42:30Track 3: but, but also like Jeff Daniels in double number, he comes through and he,
- 1:42:34Track 3: and he doesn't like pretend like he's like better than the movie. So it makes him good.
- 1:42:39Track 2: What I love is that like, cause they get Bradley Cooper back for the prequel,
- 1:42:43Track 2: but for the sequel, like it's too much, it's like too much screen time and they couldn't get him back.
- 1:42:48Track 2: So Adam Scott, yeah. And he's like, Oh, I got my, uh, my deviated septum.
- 1:42:54Track 2: Everyone's like, Oh, everyone's like, you look way better now.
- 1:42:57Track 3: Yeah, the whole joke is that he's not Bradley Cooper in the sequel one.
- 1:43:03Track 3: Adam Scott fits right in with all of these people. He's a perfect fit for these guys.
- 1:43:08evan: Yeah, like in Step Brothers kind of style.
- 1:43:11Track 2: Exactly yeah john um john ham's
- 1:43:14Track 2: in the prequel as well and he has some he has like a fight scene with
- 1:43:17Track 2: christopher maloney that's really like a sniper and he's
- 1:43:21Track 2: uh he's ronald reagan's assassin and it's so funny because i remember hearing
- 1:43:28Track 2: stories of like before he before madman like he was at like poker games with
- 1:43:32Track 2: doug benson and stuff he's another guy who like was slumming it with comedy
- 1:43:36Track 2: people or he was a big time dramatic actor but it is crazy to be like he.
- 1:43:40Track 3: Still he still kind of is like i feel like he never really like after madmen
- 1:43:44Track 3: you know he's kind of like stuck.
- 1:43:46Track 2: In a weird because he'll show up on doug doug benson and there's like a recent
- 1:43:49Track 2: episode of how did this get made where like it opens with somebody doing a theme
- 1:43:54Track 2: song and they're like oh that was john by the way yeah i feel he'll come.
- 1:43:58Track 3: He'll show up on comedy bang bang at least once.
- 1:44:00Track 2: A year i feel So like.
- 1:44:01Track 3: I think, yeah, he used to play poker with like Scott Ackerman and all those
- 1:44:06Track 3: guys, Doug Benson and stuff.
- 1:44:08Track 2: Yeah.
- 1:44:08Track 3: He's just a hunk that happens to really like alt comedy.
- 1:44:13Track 2: Yeah. I mean, yeah. He'll always get respect for me. Because also,
- 1:44:16Track 2: I mean, Don Draper. I mean.
- 1:44:18Track 3: Yeah. I'm just like him. He's just like me.
- 1:44:22Track 2: I know. I mean.
- 1:44:25evan: Yeah. I like him on 30 Rock.
- 1:44:27Track 3: Yeah. Oh, yeah. He's great on 30 Rock. He's just playing like a himbo. Yeah.
- 1:44:34Track 3: Well, Wet Hot American Summer. Did I have anything else?
- 1:44:38evan: My colonel.
- 1:44:40Track 3: Just scrolling through my notes. Just like clute. I do like the switching of
- 1:44:45Track 3: the jackets scene. That's very funny.
- 1:44:48evan: Oh, I was going to mention that one too. And then my, actually the best part
- 1:44:50evan: of that is later when she pulls the flannel out of the tiny little box.
- 1:44:55Track 3: Like a clown. Yeah, it's like...
- 1:44:58Track 3: and like uh oh yeah there's one camper we haven't
- 1:45:01Track 3: talked about it what is his name what's his name seth the the
- 1:45:04Track 3: guy that he looks like um what's his name uh oh the guy yeah he looks like i
- 1:45:11Track 3: forget what the that actor's name is but uh and the character too i'm forgetting
- 1:45:15Track 3: the character's name now too but he's like an alien like he's like it's like
- 1:45:19Track 3: there's like a magical spell or it's like yeah.
- 1:45:23Track 2: He does like he conjures the wind or.
- 1:45:25Track 3: Whatever i think like.
- 1:45:26Track 2: Jj mentions that he's his brother like uh.
- 1:45:29Track 3: Yeah he's in.
- 1:45:30Track 2: A big bank mckinley's like your brother's weird.
- 1:45:32Track 3: Oh big bang oh.
- 1:45:33Track 2: Yeah he's the guy that i think they're doing i think they're doing like a spinoff
- 1:45:37Track 2: that was starring him or something on a kevin i believe.
- 1:45:40Track 3: Okay yeah i.
- 1:45:41Track 2: Saw a headline of that the other day.
- 1:45:43Track 3: Hate to play among us with that guy am i right it is crazy that like they that.
- 1:45:47Track 2: They got like um like a star is born bradley cooper you know to.
- 1:45:52Track 3: Yeah have like a sexy with john peter that is one One of my favorite jeans with
- 1:45:57Track 3: all the sports equipment falling off the wall.
- 1:46:01Track 3: And they're like putting their feet up higher up onto things,
- 1:46:04Track 3: like getting a leg up over there. It's really good.
- 1:46:09Track 2: Like in the VO, it's like it's JJ and Gary, I think.
- 1:46:14Track 2: And they're like, they're like, we should get him a Debbie. No, not that Debbie.
- 1:46:18Track 2: Tall Debbie. And they're just like four different Debbies that they run through.
- 1:46:22Track 3: Dude, yeah. Michael Ian Black is so funny. that that's what makes it such a
- 1:46:27Track 3: bummer that he's he is the way he is in real life because like,
- 1:46:30Track 3: he's one of the best parts of stella like his just the way he says things and
- 1:46:34Track 3: like the way he can like be like so serious and like i don't know he he's he
- 1:46:39Track 3: cracks me up so it's a bummer that he,
- 1:46:42Track 3: really just is hanging it up with uh old maggie mccain yeah you know what are
- 1:46:48Track 3: you gonna do it was a big bummer ben domino's uh ex-wife they're not even married anymore did.
- 1:46:55Track 2: He ever hang out you think he hung out with john.
- 1:46:57Track 3: He helped him put his jacket on or whatever i bet.
- 1:46:59evan: He did yeah.
- 1:47:00Track 3: They did riffs let me get it sir i have got you they.
- 1:47:04Track 2: Did riffs about iran or whatever.
- 1:47:06Track 3: I was thinking about the nick mullen tweet of like daddy pick me up and it's
- 1:47:10Track 3: like uh vietnam on my shoulder.
- 1:47:14Track 3: That's a mean tweet, but it's funny.
- 1:47:18Track 2: Michael Ian Black was probably really mad about Trump when he said that he liked
- 1:47:21Track 2: his pilots who don't crash or whatever. I like when my pilots don't crash.
- 1:47:26Track 3: My war heroes don't crash.
- 1:47:27Track 2: Probably made Michael Ian Black really mad, you know?
- 1:47:30evan: Oh, man. Yeah, but I think we got everything we can out of Wet Hot American
- 1:47:38evan: Summer. And I'm going to...
- 1:47:40Track 3: It's one of those movies where you just are like, this scene is pretty good.
- 1:47:43Track 3: Like, literally every day. This way to talk about it is like,
- 1:47:46Track 3: yeah, exactly. Just like, remember this part? Like, that's, yeah.
- 1:47:49Track 3: It's up there with like, the Ocean's movies of just like, this scene is awesome.
- 1:47:54Track 3: This scene is funny. Like...
- 1:47:56evan: Yeah, just like that too. The cast is across the board, funny.
- 1:48:03evan: There's no really weak links.
- 1:48:06evan: Even the kids do good, everything about it.
- 1:48:09evan: But yeah, I appreciate it. Ryan Estee, thank you for coming on.
- 1:48:14Track 2: Oh, thank you. We appreciate it.
- 1:48:16Track 3: You taste like a burger. We don't like you anymore. We're leaving.
- 1:48:20evan: The name of the game is Snaps.
- 1:48:23Track 3: Yes. And we're going to play Snaps now for 10 more minutes. But yeah,
- 1:48:30Track 3: thank you. It was great to be back.
- 1:48:31Track 2: Yeah, thank you.
- 1:48:32evan: Of course. And everyone should go check out Altmania and the Demi episodes.
- 1:48:38Track 3: We're getting Demi-fied. We're just about to hit Melvin and Howard, which is a big one.
- 1:48:44Track 3: But hey, check out his other movies too before that. Crazy Mama,
- 1:48:48Track 3: Citizens Band. Those ones were some highlights for sure.
- 1:48:51Track 2: The Cage Sheet episode, I think, is one of my favorites we've done so far in the demi-arc.
- 1:48:56Track 3: Yeah.
- 1:48:56Track 2: It was really good.
- 1:48:57Track 3: I got a DM from two different people about that episode.
- 1:49:01Track 2: Oh, really?
- 1:49:02Track 3: Some good DMs, not bad ones.
- 1:49:04Track 2: Oh, okay.
- 1:49:05evan: Yeah, the one.
- 1:49:05Track 2: I was wondering, yeah, no one, because I hadn't heard anything.
- 1:49:09Track 2: It is weird when you make a podcast and you're like, does anyone hear that?
- 1:49:11Track 3: Right, yeah. It's just like, ah.
- 1:49:14Track 2: I usually hear compliments secondhand through other people.
- 1:49:18Track 3: Yeah, we have a, I guess we can plug stuff. like we have a discord oh yes please
- 1:49:22Track 3: hang out there we have a patreon where we do two bonuses a month we just did
- 1:49:26Track 3: earnest goes to jail which is why we've been referencing earnest a lot in this
- 1:49:30Track 3: episode uh what are you talking about we just do it anyways but it's.
- 1:49:34Track 2: A surprisingly like deep and thoughtful episode i.
- 1:49:38Track 3: Think it's.
- 1:49:38Track 2: Kind of serious but it is and it's not like a bad movie yeah that's about noel.com
- 1:49:43Track 2: that's right i put a bunch of my writing up there i've taken a pause to write some,
- 1:49:49Track 2: longer foreign stuff but I'm working on something I'm going to post soon but
- 1:49:52Track 2: I recently wrote something a couple weeks ago for the 50th anniversary of Nashville very good,
- 1:50:00Track 2: Yeah, thank you. Thank you, Ryan. Yeah, we love doing the podcast.
- 1:50:03Track 2: And the Discord's been really active as well.
- 1:50:08Track 2: Twitch. Oh, yeah, we do Twitch streams every Thursday as well.
- 1:50:10Track 3: We do, yeah. We just did an episode with our friend Jake from Podcasting for
- 1:50:17Track 3: Me, who has been on this show, I believe.
- 1:50:20evan: He has been on the show. We did Halloween 3 and X2, X-Men, the first X-Men.
- 1:50:26Track 3: Oh, hell yeah.
- 1:50:27Track 2: It's great.
- 1:50:28evan: Completely unrelated films. I guess as are too.
- 1:50:31Track 3: If you like him, on our Patreon, we put those up for free. So you just have to follow us on Patreon.
- 1:50:38Track 3: And we put all our VODs up there.
- 1:50:41Track 3: And we watched Adventures in Hollywood, which is a 3-6 Mafia reality show that
- 1:50:47Track 3: lasted one season on MTV, I think.
- 1:50:50Track 3: It was really good. There's a guy named Computer on it that we took a really big liking to.
- 1:50:55Track 2: I literally really that that's just the uh like that's like irl uh grislin.com.
- 1:51:02Track 3: Like uh from 30 rock oh yeah don't you're so right damn i didn't even think
- 1:51:06Track 3: about it yeah from 30 rock i don't know if you watch the bear.
- 1:51:10evan: But there's also a character named the computer on that too.
- 1:51:12Track 3: There's a computer in the bear yeah just.
- 1:51:15evan: A guy named.
- 1:51:15Track 3: Computer he just like does lots of math in his head it's funny yeah i think
- 1:51:20Track 3: the whole thing in uh adventures in hollywood they call him computer because
- 1:51:24Track 3: like he uses the computer that's like he knows how to use the computer like he's.
- 1:51:29Track 2: The one guy in the in the group who like knows how to set up an email account so they're like yo look.
- 1:51:35Track 3: It's fucking computer computer over here damn yeah fuck it back he like printed
- 1:51:40Track 3: out a paper he's like check it out guys yeah but thank you i'm sorry yeah,
- 1:51:49Track 3: We love to yap. We love to talk.
- 1:51:51evan: Yeah, thanks for coming on. And you've been listening to Left of the Projector,
- 1:51:55evan: and we will catch you next time.
