- 0:00Speaker 1: William Conrad stars as Marshal Matt Dillon, with Parley Bear
- 0:04Speaker 1: as Chester in CBS Radio's Gunsmoke. In episode 75, Fawn,
- 0:11Speaker 1: first heard September 26, 1953, Dillon and Chester ride to
- 0:16Speaker 1: an army fort to meet Mrs. Phillips, returning after ten
- 0:19Speaker 1: years among the Cheyenne, and Fawn, an eight-year-old Cheyenne girl,
- 0:24Speaker 1: traveling with her. On the road toward Dodge City, Mrs.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Phillips awaits contact with her husband while the two newcomers
- 0:32Speaker 1: face an uneasy reception. John Meston wrote this early season
- 0:37Speaker 1: drama produced by Norman MacDonald, and now we return to
- 0:41Speaker 1: the original broadcast.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there's
- 0:56Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 0:59Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of Gunsmoke.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Gunsmoke Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the violence
- 1:26Speaker 2: that moved west with young America. The story of a
- 1:29Speaker 2: man who moved with it. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal.

- 1:58Speaker 4: Oh, now, where in the world could he be? Don't shoot, Mr.
- 2:03Speaker 5: Dillon.
- 2:03Speaker 6: It's Chester.
- 2:04Speaker 3: What? Oh, you darn fool.
- 2:09Speaker 4: I'm sorry, sir. I didn't see you laying there.
- 2:13Speaker 3: You're slamming doors. You always do that.
- 2:16Speaker 4: Who'd you think it was? Is there somebody after you?
- 2:20Speaker 3: There could be, Chester. A lot of people. Bill, what
- 2:24Speaker 3: do you got there?
- 2:25Speaker 4: A telegram. I happened to be passing by the depot
- 2:27Speaker 4: and they gave it to me.
- 2:28Speaker 6: Here.
- 2:29Speaker 5: Oh, you read it.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I haven't got my eyes on it.
- 2:31Speaker 7: All right.
- 2:35Speaker 4: My, it's from Washington, Mr. Dillon, from the government.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Well, then they still know where I am anyway. Well, yes, sir.
- 2:42Speaker 4: It's addressed to you.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Well, read it, Chester.
- 2:45Speaker 3: All right.
- 2:46Speaker 4: It says... Proceed to Fort Larned and receive return prisoner
- 2:51Speaker 4: from Colonel Bloor.
- 2:52Speaker 5: Stop. You will hold and dodge until arrival of Roger
- 2:55Speaker 5: Phillips of Boston. Stop.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Signed, C.J. Calvert, War Department. What's it mean?
- 3:02Speaker 7: Well, as usual, it doesn't explain much, Chester. But Fort
- 3:06Speaker 7: Larned is a 55-mile ride from here. I've got to
- 3:09Speaker 7: go over and pick up some prisoner.
- 3:10Speaker 3: And then ride 55 miles back to Dodge with him.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Yes, but what for, Mr.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Dillon? I don't know, Chester.
- 3:17Speaker 7: Maybe that man from Boston can explain it when he
- 3:19Speaker 7: gets here.
- 3:20Speaker 4: That colonel at Fort Larned must know.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Oh, he might.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Can I go with you?
- 3:25Speaker 3: All right. We'll start in the morning at daylight.
- 3:29Speaker 8: All right.
- 3:45Speaker 5: Have a chair, Marshal.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Oh, thank you.
- 3:47Speaker 7: Our quarters aren't luxurious here, but we'll find a place
- 3:49Speaker 7: of some sort for you tonight.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Well, there are two of us, Colonel.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Fine. And when will you want to start back to Dodge?
- 3:56Speaker 3: Tomorrow, if the prisoner's ready.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Prisoner?
- 3:58Speaker 7: Now, don't tell me they got everything mixed up again.
- 4:03Speaker 7: I came here to pick up a returned prisoner, whatever
- 4:05Speaker 7: that is.
- 4:06Speaker 5: And that's the only description you had?
- 4:08Speaker 3: That's all. I have to hold him in Dodge till
- 4:10Speaker 3: somebody from Boston comes after him.
- 4:12Speaker 5: I'd better explain, Marshal.
- 4:14Speaker 7: The prisoner was a captive of the Cheyennes and returned
- 4:16Speaker 7: to us several weeks ago.
- 4:18Speaker 5: Oh, I see.
- 4:20Speaker 7: Well, can't you keep him here at Fort Leonard or
- 4:23Speaker 7: just send him home?
- 4:25Speaker 3: It's a woman, Marshal. What?
- 4:28Speaker 5: Mrs.
- 4:28Speaker 7: Phillips and the man who's coming out from Boston for
- 4:31Speaker 7: her as her husband. It'll take him several weeks, so
- 4:34Speaker 7: it was thought best that Mrs. Phillips should be in Dodge.
- 4:39Speaker 3: I never heard of sending a woman to Dodge.
- 4:41Speaker 7: To be better off. But I'll take her there, and
- 4:44Speaker 7: that's what they want.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Where'd you find her, anyway?
- 4:48Speaker 5: Perhaps I should tell you the whole story. Mrs.
- 4:50Speaker 7: Phillips was captured while traveling to join her husband in
- 4:53Speaker 7: Denver ten years ago.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Ten years? That's a long time for a woman to
- 4:59Speaker 3: live with Indians.
- 4:59Speaker 5: Yes, it is.
- 5:01Speaker 7: Her stage was attacked by the Cheyennes, and everyone but
- 5:03Speaker 7: her was killed.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, how'd you get hold of her?
- 5:06Speaker 7: She won't talk much, Marshal, but evidently she managed to escape.
- 5:10Speaker 7: You see, we were chasing a band of Cheyennes led
- 5:12Speaker 7: by Chief Blackhorn a few weeks back, and we ran
- 5:15Speaker 7: into Mrs.
- 5:15Speaker 5: Phillips and a girl out on the prairie.
- 5:17Speaker 3: A girl? A Cheyenne, not a white girl. That's strange.
- 5:22Speaker 7: But anyway, what are you going to do with the girl, Colonel?
- 5:24Speaker 7: It's all been decided in Washington. She's to go on
- 5:27Speaker 7: to a reservation.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Oh, good.
- 5:29Speaker 7: Then I don't have to worry about her. Well, I'm afraid, Marshal,
- 5:31Speaker 7: it's going to take a little time.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Huh?
- 5:35Speaker 3: What do you mean?
- 5:36Speaker 6: Mrs.
- 5:36Speaker 7: Phillips absolutely refuses to be separated from her.
- 5:39Speaker 3: But right now I have to take them both to Dodge, huh?
- 5:41Speaker 5: I'm afraid so.
- 5:43Speaker 7: I'll send for the girl when Mrs. Phillips goes home.
- 5:45Speaker 7: How old's the girl, Colonel? Perhaps somewhere between eight and twelve.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Well, I suppose I'll meet them at supper.
- 5:52Speaker 5: I don't think so. She insists on eating alone with
- 5:56Speaker 5: the girl. Oh, and by the way, they're both still
- 5:58Speaker 5: in Indian dress. You'll have to do something about that
- 6:02Speaker 5: in Dodge.
- 6:04Speaker 7: Colonel.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Do you have a bottle of good whiskey hidden in
- 6:07Speaker 3: that desk?
- 6:08Speaker 5: Of course I have, Marshal. But don't worry. I'm sure
- 6:12Speaker 5: everything will go smoothly.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Sure. I'll ask the colonel if he can spare a wagon, Chester.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Well, it's going to be an awful slow trip in
- 6:32Speaker 4: a wagon.
- 6:32Speaker 3: That can't be helped. At least we're getting an early start.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Yes, sir. Hey, by golly, there's a colonel.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Soldiers always get up early, Chester.
- 6:40Speaker 4: That would keep me out of the army all by itself.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Good morning, colonel. Good morning, Marshal.
- 6:47Speaker 5: Chester.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Good morning, sir.
- 6:49Speaker 5: Mrs. Phillips is waiting inside, Marshal. Shall we go in?
- 6:52Speaker 3: Oh, well, you better stay here, Chester.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Yes, sir. Mrs. Phillips, I've brought Marshal Dillon.
- 7:08Speaker 8: How do you do, Marshal? Ma'am. Come in, gentlemen. This
- 7:17Speaker 8: is Gray Fawn. You may call her Fawn if you prefer.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Does she speak English, ma'am?
- 7:24Speaker 8: A little, but you mustn't expect her to talk. She's
- 7:27Speaker 8: a little too frightened of white men.
- 7:30Speaker 3: I've come to take you to Dodge, Miss Phillips.
- 7:33Speaker 8: I know. It's very kind of you. We're ready.
- 7:36Speaker 7: Good.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I forgot to ask you, Colonel, if I could borrow
- 7:38Speaker 3: a wagon.
- 7:39Speaker 5: Why, certainly, Marshal. And I'll send a soldier along to
- 7:41Speaker 5: drive it.
- 7:42Speaker 8: That won't be necessary, gentlemen. Vaughn and I have horses
- 7:45Speaker 8: and we can ride.
- 7:46Speaker 3: That's a long trip, ma'am.
- 7:48Speaker 8: I'm sure we've made longer ones, Marshal. We're ready to
- 7:51Speaker 8: leave when you are.
- 7:52Speaker 5: I'll have your horses brought up at once, Mrs.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Phillips.
- 7:54Speaker 8: Thank you, Colonel.
- 7:56Speaker 7: It's 55 miles, ma'am, and there's no place to spend
- 7:59Speaker 7: the night.
- 8:00Speaker 8: You forget, Marshal. I've been a Cheyenne for 10 years.
- 8:06Speaker 3: All right. Well, let's get started.
- 8:30Speaker 4: I swear, Miss Phillips, I don't think you and Vaughn
- 8:32Speaker 4: are half as tired as I am.
- 8:34Speaker 8: Chief Blackhorn insisted the women ride almost as much as
- 8:37Speaker 8: the men, Chester.
- 8:39Speaker 4: What sort of a fellow is he, ma'am? I was
- 8:41Speaker 4: never acquainted with any Indians real well.
- 8:43Speaker 7: Never mind that now, Chester. Let's stop here. This is
- 8:48Speaker 7: the Dodge house, Miss Phillips. I'll go see if they
- 8:51Speaker 7: have a room for you.
- 8:52Speaker 8: Thank you, Marshal.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Take my horse, Chester.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Chester, I got him.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Maybe you better tie them all up over there. I'm
- 8:58Speaker 3: sure they got plenty of rooms. I'll be back in
- 9:00Speaker 3: a minute. Good evening, Hank. Hello, Marshal. Where you been?
- 9:13Speaker 3: I got a couple of women outside, Hank. They'll want
- 9:16Speaker 3: a room here for maybe, oh, two weeks. And so? Sure, Marshal, sure.
- 9:22Speaker 3: I need some guests in this place. Two weeks? That's fine.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Give them your best room. They've come a long way. Certainly, certainly.
- 9:31Speaker 3: You just bring them right in. Chester.
- 9:36Speaker 6: Yes, sir?
- 9:37Speaker 3: It's okay.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Come on in.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Where are they from, Marshal? Well, it's a long story, Hank.
- 9:44Speaker 3: And don't ask them. Okay.
- 9:48Speaker 5: Well, I'll be.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Is this them? This is Hank Reisling, Miss Phillips.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Mrs. Phillips?
- 9:56Speaker 3: I'll get you some different clothes tomorrow, ma'am.
- 9:59Speaker 4: That's all right. right, Marshal.
- 10:01Speaker 3: You really a white woman? Yeah, of course she is.
- 10:08Speaker 3: What about the girl? The girl's Cheyenne, but she's staying
- 10:11Speaker 3: with Miss Phillips. No, no, not here she ain't. Now
- 10:14Speaker 3: listen to me, Hank.
- 10:15Speaker 7: Miss Phillips has been a captive of the Cheyennes for
- 10:17Speaker 7: ten years. She got away and brought this girl with her,
- 10:19Speaker 7: and they're tired, and they want a room.
- 10:21Speaker 8: Never mind, Marshal. It doesn't matter.
- 10:23Speaker 3: The white lady can stay here, but I ain't taking
- 10:26Speaker 3: in no filthy Indians.
- 10:27Speaker 8: You should be ashamed.
- 10:29Speaker 3: And by tomorrow, you'll have to get out of that
- 10:31Speaker 3: costume yourself. Shut up, Hank. I ain't running no hotels
- 10:34Speaker 3: for Indians. Or, come to think of it, Even for
- 10:38Speaker 3: them that looks like Indians.
- 10:40Speaker 6: No.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Come on, let's get out of here. I apologize for him,
- 10:51Speaker 3: Miss Phillips.
- 10:54Speaker 8: There'll only be trouble. I knew it.
- 10:57Speaker 3: I'll find a place for you. Don't worry. Chester.
- 11:03Speaker 8: Hmm?
- 11:03Speaker 3: Go over there and get Kitty, huh? Tell her I
- 11:06Speaker 3: want to see her right away.
- 11:06Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 11:12Speaker 8: It isn't going to work, Marshal.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Now, ma'am, nobody's going to bother you. I promise you
- 11:16Speaker 3: they won't.
- 11:17Speaker 8: It's been so long. So much has happened.
- 11:20Speaker 3: But you've escaped now. You're out of it.
- 11:23Speaker 8: No. No, Marshal, I didn't escape.
- 11:26Speaker 3: What?
- 11:27Speaker 8: I couldn't have escaped. I was allowed to leave. And
- 11:31Speaker 8: Fawn was allowed to go with me.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I never heard of Indians doing that before.
- 11:35Speaker 8: It was the chief, Blackhorn.
- 11:38Speaker 3: But why?
- 11:40Speaker 8: Well, you may not understand it. But after the first
- 11:43Speaker 8: few years, after I adapted myself to the tribe and
- 11:47Speaker 8: its ways, I was treated kindly. But even so, I
- 11:55Speaker 8: knew I could never be happy with the Cheyennes away
- 11:57Speaker 8: from my own people.
- 11:59Speaker 3: So Backhorn just lets you come back?
- 12:01Speaker 8: Yes. I know it seems strange, but he's a strong man, Marshal.
- 12:09Speaker 8: A very strong man.
- 12:10Speaker 5: All right.
- 12:12Speaker 3: But what about Fawn here? He must have known she'd
- 12:16Speaker 3: end up on a reservation.
- 12:17Speaker 8: No, never. Hello, Matt.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Oh, Kitty, this is Miss Phillips.
- 12:22Speaker 8: I know, Chester told me.
- 12:24Speaker 6: I'm glad to meet you, Mrs.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Phillips.
- 12:26Speaker 8: Thank you, Kitty. I got a room for you and
- 12:28Speaker 8: the girl.
- 12:28Speaker 9: It's out back of the Texas Trail. It belongs to
- 12:31Speaker 9: a friend of mine. She'll move in with me while
- 12:33Speaker 9: you need it.
- 12:34Speaker 8: Oh, that's very kind of you.
- 12:35Speaker 3: And her.
- 12:36Speaker 9: Well, I was never caught by the Indians, but... I
- 12:40Speaker 9: know what it's like to be a stranger in town.
- 12:42Speaker 9: Come on, I'll show it to you, and then we
- 12:44Speaker 9: can get something to eat.
- 12:45Speaker 8: I hope I can repay you. Nonsense.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Take the horses, will you, Chester?
- 12:49Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 12:51Speaker 6: Shall we go, Mrs.
- 12:51Speaker 8: Phillips? Excuse me, Kitty, I... I want to say something
- 12:55Speaker 8: to the Marshal first.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Sure.
- 12:57Speaker 8: Here, Fawn, you take my hand. We'll walk on ahead.
- 13:04Speaker 3: What is it, ma'am?
- 13:05Speaker 8: A moment ago, you asked about Fawn... You said she'd
- 13:09Speaker 8: go to a reservation.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Well, that's what the colonel said.
- 13:14Speaker 8: Fawn will stay with me, always.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Well, I guess you're pretty fond of her.
- 13:21Speaker 8: Yes, I am. You see, Marshal, Fawn is my daughter.
- 13:27Speaker 3: The End.
- 13:45Speaker 7: It took a lot of courage for Miss Phillips to
- 13:47Speaker 7: come back into the white man's world after ten years
- 13:51Speaker 7: among the Cheyennes and to bring her.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Daughter with her. I didn't tell anybody about it. I
- 14:00Speaker 3: figured she'd talk for herself when the time came.
- 14:04Speaker 7: A week passed, and while the people of Dodge regarded
- 14:07Speaker 7: Miss Phillips as a curiosity, they didn't take to her
- 14:11Speaker 7: treating the child as an equal. And so they avoided
- 14:15Speaker 7: them both. Kitty looked after them, though, and I saw
- 14:19Speaker 7: them whenever I could. But it was Doc they really impressed.
- 14:24Speaker 7: I never saw such a.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Pair, Matt.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Why.
- 14:31Speaker 6: Well, they'll live to be a hundred, both of them.
- 14:34Speaker 3: They look healthy, all right. Ah, there are a couple
- 14:37Speaker 3: of chairs, Doc.
- 14:38Speaker 7: Let's sit a while, huh?
- 14:40Speaker 4: Oh, yes.
- 14:44Speaker 10: I swear if I wasn't so old, I'd go live
- 14:47Speaker 10: with the Indians myself.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Don't think you'd like it, Doc.
- 14:52Speaker 4: I wouldn't.
- 14:52Speaker 5: Why not?
- 14:53Speaker 3: Too much work.
- 14:54Speaker 10: Oh, no, not for me, as far as I can tell.
- 14:56Speaker 10: There wouldn't be no patients. They're all too healthy. Before
- 15:01Speaker 10: you go, Doc, tell me something. Do you think the
- 15:07Speaker 10: girl is as frightened.
- 15:09Speaker 3: As she was at first?
- 15:11Speaker 11: No.
- 15:12Speaker 3: She'll come out of it.
- 15:13Speaker 5: Just give her time.
- 15:15Speaker 4: This is quite a change for her.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, it sure is. There's one thing about Fawn, though. What?
- 15:24Speaker 3: She isn't pure, Cheyenne. She isn't? You know as well
- 15:30Speaker 3: as I do this year, isn't it? That makes sort
- 15:35Speaker 3: of a problem for Miss Phillips, doesn't it, Doc?
- 15:38Speaker 10: People just treat her worse if they knew the truth, man.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Marshal Dillon. Hello. I'm Jeff Hunter. What can I do
- 15:47Speaker 3: for you?
- 15:48Speaker 5: I'm on my way to California, Marshal, so I ain't
- 15:50Speaker 5: gonna cause trouble.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Well, that's fine.
- 15:54Speaker 5: I want to talk to that woman, Mrs. Phillips, you
- 15:57Speaker 5: brought to Dodge.
- 15:59Speaker 7: Oh?
- 16:01Speaker 3: What for, Hunter?
- 16:03Speaker 5: I'll tell her that, Marshal. I just thought maybe it'd
- 16:05Speaker 5: be easier if you took me there. You can stay
- 16:08Speaker 5: while I'm talking to her, if you like.
- 16:12Speaker 3: All right, Hunter. She lives back on the Texas Trail here.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Come on, I'll show you the way. I'll see you later, Doc.
- 16:20Speaker 6: Sure, Matt.
- 16:29Speaker 3: You live around here?
- 16:31Speaker 5: I've been ranching, Marshal. It's too cold winters. I'm going
- 16:34Speaker 5: to California.
- 16:35Speaker 9: No?
- 16:35Speaker 5: No. Family?
- 16:40Speaker 4: No.
- 16:41Speaker 5: I'm alone.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Now, here we are.
- 16:54Speaker 8: Come in, Marshal. Oh, both of you.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Thank you very much. Miss Phillips, this is Jeff Hunter.
- 17:07Speaker 4: How do you do?
- 17:07Speaker 7: I'm proud to know you, ma'am. He wants to talk
- 17:10Speaker 7: to you, Miss Phillips. He looks like a good man
- 17:12Speaker 7: to me, or I wouldn't have brought him here.
- 17:14Speaker 8: Oh, you're most welcome, Mr. Hunter.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Miss Phillips, I've heard your story, some of it anyway.
- 17:21Speaker 5: I thought maybe you might know something about my wife.
- 17:26Speaker 8: Your wife?
- 17:26Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am. The Arapahos captured her about seven years ago.
- 17:31Speaker 5: I know there's some Arapahos and Cheyennes that are friendly,
- 17:34Speaker 5: and I was wondering if you ever heard of her.
- 17:37Speaker 5: Her name was Ruth.
- 17:41Speaker 8: The Arapahos had a white woman once. Blonde, captured on
- 17:46Speaker 8: the Solomon River. I never met her, though.
- 17:47Speaker 3: My wife's a blonde, and that's the place it happened. Oh. Mr.
- 17:53Speaker 8: Hunter, when I heard of her, she'd already died.
- 17:56Speaker 6: I'm sorry.
- 17:58Speaker 8: I'm sorry.
- 18:02Speaker 5: Ruth never was very strong.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Shouldn't have brought her to this country.
- 18:08Speaker 8: Wasn't your fault, Mr. Hunter. Things just happen sometimes, that's all.
- 18:14Speaker 5: Maybe it's better she died.
- 18:17Speaker 8: That could be.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Hope it wasn't too hard for you, ma'am.
- 18:24Speaker 8: It wasn't easy.
- 18:25Speaker 3: That's right, pretty little girl.
- 18:30Speaker 5: What's her name?
- 18:30Speaker 8: We call her Fawn.
- 18:32Speaker 3: Oh, that's a pretty name, too.
- 18:35Speaker 5: She takes after you, ma'am.
- 18:36Speaker 8: What?
- 18:37Speaker 5: Well, of course, she's a little different in color, but
- 18:39Speaker 5: she kind of has your mouth.
- 18:41Speaker 8: Marshal.
- 18:43Speaker 3: You know I've never said a word, Miss Phillips.
- 18:45Speaker 6: Mr.
- 18:45Speaker 8: Hunter, how'd you know Fawn's my daughter?
- 18:48Speaker 5: Well, I just knew, that's all.
- 18:50Speaker 8: How'd you know?
- 18:51Speaker 3: Well, I heard there was a little girl.
- 18:54Speaker 5: Nobody said so, but I figured she must be yours.
- 18:57Speaker 5: And then when I saw her just now, I knew
- 19:01Speaker 5: she was. I hope I haven't said anything to trouble you, ma'am.
- 19:06Speaker 8: No.
- 19:07Speaker 7: No.
- 19:08Speaker 8: You haven't. But people have already made it hard.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Sure.
- 19:14Speaker 5: People talk, but they don't know. They got no idea
- 19:17Speaker 5: what it was like.
- 19:19Speaker 8: That's very true.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Figured you were lucky you were able to bring her
- 19:23Speaker 5: with you.
- 19:24Speaker 6: Mr.
- 19:25Speaker 8: Hunter, Fawn is a chief's daughter. Blackhorn. It was he
- 19:30Speaker 8: who allowed us to leave the tribe.
- 19:35Speaker 3: I'll be going now, ma'am.
- 19:37Speaker 5: I hope everything will be all right with you.
- 19:39Speaker 8: Goodbye, Mr. Hunter.
- 19:40Speaker 5: Goodbye. Thanks for talking to me.
- 19:43Speaker 3: I'll see you later, Miss Phillips.
- 19:45Speaker 8: Yes, Marshal.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Jeff Hunter didn't leave Dodge right away.
- 20:02Speaker 7: Kitty told me that he ran into Miss Phillips on
- 20:05Speaker 7: the street the next day and had another conversation. Later,
- 20:10Speaker 7: I heard he took her and the girl fishing.
- 20:13Speaker 3: I figured he was good company for them and no
- 20:16Speaker 3: harm could come of it. I was busy and I
- 20:20Speaker 3: sort of forgot about it for a few days. When
- 20:24Speaker 3: one morning a man walked into the office.
- 20:27Speaker 6: Marshall Dillon.
- 20:30Speaker 3: I'm I'm Phillips. Roger Phillips. I've come for for my wife. Well,
- 20:39Speaker 3: when did you get into Dodge? Oh, I came in
- 20:41Speaker 3: the Santa Fe last night. Last night? I thought it
- 20:47Speaker 3: wisest to wait till morning.
- 20:50Speaker 5: Oh.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Well, it's your business, Phillips. Chester. Hmm? Go tell Miss
- 20:56Speaker 3: Phillips her husband's here. I'll bring him over in a
- 20:58Speaker 3: few minutes. Yes, sir.
- 20:59Speaker 4: I'll go tell her, Mr.
- 21:00Speaker 11: Dillon. Well, this is my first trip West in many years.
- 21:11Speaker 11: Ever since Mrs. Phillips was lost, in fact.
- 21:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Are you staying?
- 21:17Speaker 5: Staying?
- 21:17Speaker 3: Oh, no. No, we'll go straight back to Boston.
- 21:20Speaker 5: I much prefer it there.
- 21:22Speaker 3: I see. Well, Miss Phillips is fine, although I have
- 21:25Speaker 3: an idea you'll see some changes in her. I expect that.
- 21:30Speaker 5: I expect that.
- 21:31Speaker 3: She's been through a terrible experience, Marshal.
- 21:33Speaker 11: Of course, we'll... We'll get her back to normal soon enough.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Seems pretty normal to me right now.
- 21:42Speaker 5: Really?
- 21:43Speaker 11: That's hard to imagine after ten years among the savages.
- 21:50Speaker 11: I only hope she hasn't... well, lost too much. She
- 21:55Speaker 11: was a well-bred woman, Marshal.
- 21:58Speaker 3: And we... She still is. She's just learned more.
- 22:05Speaker 6: I told her, Mr.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Dillon.
- 22:07Speaker 3: All right, Chester. I'll show you where she's staying, Phillips.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Come along.
- 22:25Speaker 4: I sure didn't think much of him, did you, Mr. Dillon?
- 22:28Speaker 3: Not much, Chester.
- 22:30Speaker 4: Awful uppity. Seems a shame. A fine woman like that.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Well, maybe she can handle him.
- 22:36Speaker 4: If he's worth handling.
- 22:38Speaker 3: It's not our problem, Chester.
- 22:40Speaker 4: Well, no, sir, I guess not.
- 22:42Speaker 6: Marshal, I want to talk to you.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Good morning, Miss Phillips.
- 22:46Speaker 8: Good morning, Marshal.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Marshal, you listen to me. Yeah? What is it? Well,
- 22:53Speaker 3: I've just learned the full truth.
- 22:57Speaker 6: I understand you've known about it all along.
- 22:58Speaker 8: I hope you'll forgive me, Marshal. I told him you knew.
- 23:01Speaker 3: There's nothing wrong with that, ma'am.
- 23:03Speaker 11: The whole thing is wrong. A girl will go to
- 23:05Speaker 11: a reservation where she belongs. This was arranged in Washington, Marshal.
- 23:09Speaker 7: No, Roger.
- 23:10Speaker 6: Never, never.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Now, wait a minute, ma'am.
- 23:13Speaker 7: Look, Phillips, the colonel at Fort Leonard told me the arrangements,
- 23:16Speaker 7: but he didn't know the facts, and neither did the
- 23:19Speaker 7: people in Washington.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Things are a little different now, don't you think?
- 23:23Speaker 6: Well, you can hardly expect me to take that girl
- 23:26Speaker 6: back to Boston.
- 23:26Speaker 3: It's up to you, I guess.
- 23:29Speaker 11: Well, then go over there and get her, Marshal. And
- 23:32Speaker 11: hold her here in jail until we leave Dodge. And
- 23:34Speaker 11: then you can do what you like with her after that.
- 23:36Speaker 6: Roger.
- 23:37Speaker 3: You must be a pretty big man in Boston. Of
- 23:39Speaker 3: course I am. But this is Dodge City. Nobody ever
- 23:42Speaker 3: heard of you here.
- 23:42Speaker 7: Now, why don't you calm down and decide what you're
- 23:46Speaker 7: going to do?
- 23:47Speaker 6: I know what I'm going to do. I won't leave her, Roger.
- 23:50Speaker 6: I won't have her around here or anywhere else.
- 23:53Speaker 8: Then I'm sorry.
- 23:55Speaker 6: What do you mean you're sorry?
- 23:57Speaker 8: Go back to Boston. I'll stay here.
- 24:01Speaker 6: Do you know what you're saying? Yes, I do. I'll
- 24:05Speaker 6: divorce you. You'll never get a penny.
- 24:07Speaker 8: I don't want your money.
- 24:08Speaker 6: I wouldn't have it. Very well, then.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Stay.
- 24:12Speaker 6: No longer anything but a squire. Chester.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Yes, sir?
- 24:23Speaker 3: There's a train east leaving soon. Throw him on it.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Oh, I'll do it gladly, Mr. Dillon.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Miss Phillips, go to your place and wait there for me, huh?
- 24:34Speaker 3: I won't be long.
- 24:36Speaker 4: All right, Marshal.
- 24:37Speaker 11: The End.
- 25:03Speaker 8: Come in, Marshal.
- 25:05Speaker 4: Why, Mr. Hunter.
- 25:07Speaker 5: Marshal told me to come along, ma'am. I hope it's
- 25:09Speaker 5: all right.
- 25:11Speaker 8: Come in.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Thank you, ma'am. Uh, Ms.
- 25:19Speaker 5: Phillips.
- 25:21Speaker 7: I told Hunter here that, uh, your husband arrived and
- 25:26Speaker 7: that he's left.
- 25:27Speaker 6: Yes.
- 25:29Speaker 7: But, uh, I didn't tell him that he might still
- 25:33Speaker 7: try to cause trouble about the girl.
- 25:37Speaker 8: Could he?
- 25:37Speaker 3: Well, Colonel Bloor's orders were to put her on a reservation.
- 25:41Speaker 7: And it'd take a long time to change that through Washington.
- 25:47Speaker 3: And Phillips knows it.
- 25:51Speaker 8: What can I do, Marshal?
- 25:54Speaker 7: Clear out where they can't find you.
- 26:00Speaker 3: They'll all forget about it in time. That's a good idea, ma'am.
- 26:04Speaker 3: If you don't mind my saying so.
- 26:06Speaker 8: But how? I can't just ride back out onto the
- 26:10Speaker 8: prairie with her.
- 26:11Speaker 3: No. No, she can't. Can she, Hunter? Sure wouldn't be right. Well?
- 26:27Speaker 7: Ma'am?
- 26:29Speaker 8: Yes?
- 26:30Speaker 5: I'm heading for California, like I told you. I can
- 26:33Speaker 5: leave any time. I got plenty of room for two more,
- 26:37Speaker 5: like you and your pretty little girl.
- 26:41Speaker 8: Do you really want us?
- 26:44Speaker 3: I'll tell you.
- 26:46Speaker 5: I've been waiting around Dodge so as I'd be sure
- 26:48Speaker 5: that you were going to be all right.
- 26:54Speaker 3: You understand?
- 26:56Speaker 8: Yes. Yes, I understand.
