Transcript
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: This is Frontier, and this is Johnny.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: And welcome to conversations we never had.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: So we're going a little different.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: It's football season.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Week one.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: And like sports has a way, especially football, of um just excitement energy, almost like uh also I think memories of like the holidays coming and and just just excitement.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: So Johnny, you want to share a little bit about um why do you see that sports kind of like brings people together and and especially football?
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: What is it about football?
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: And hold off, I'll be right back.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Keep this rolling because got a little surprise he doesn't even know about.
- 1:01unknown: Sure, sure.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, so football's awesome.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Uh my favorite sport to watch live is definitely football.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: Um Dolphins are not gonna be too good this year, but you know, we're Dolphins fans, and sometimes that's how it is.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Uh haven't been good in a while, so yeah.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Um football's a good just a good way to um it's a good way to I guess connect with people and and um cherish moments and you know at the football games at Dolphin games we would go to we had season tickets in their best year, 2023, right?
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: Was it 2024?
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Wait, the Dolphins' best year, 2023, 1972, baby undefeated.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: I'm talking about Tua's best year.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Oh dude, I I don't know if it's a good one.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: I don't know if he's had a a good year, but that's the story for But yeah, we had season tickets, um, and we've gone to a lot of games, and it's awesome when they score a touchdown and you just have five of your fans and different people, and it's uh brings people together.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: So, what's your predictions for the season?
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Uh I think we're going undefeated with losses, to be honest.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I think we're gonna 1972 it the opposite direction.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: So why Dolphins fan, Johnny?
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, because my dad has always been a Dolphins fan, so follow his steps.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: Born and raised in Miami.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Um and yeah, the only player we got this year is A-Chain.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: So shout out to the 305 then.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Alright, so like as you can see, I I changed up into Raider Nation Jersey.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Uh I I got a lot of heat.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Um in uh in December, I saw, you know, I I I I I love football.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: I I I love sports, but I I love football.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: I've loved it for a while.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: But it almost for most of my life I allowed football, sports, it was a distraction.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: It was a distraction that just consumed me so that I didn't do the things that I dreamt of that I wanted to do, the impact I I wanted to make.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And I'd excuse myself.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I I was only lying to myself.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Um so the last few years I haven't followed it as much as as I'd like to, but there's probab you know, there's different priorities.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: I and I'm sharing that for for a reason.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: So I didn't really know much about Fernando Mendoza um throughout the year last year.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Uh I knew there was a guy who played for Cal, and the Canes beat him the year before in 2024, and then he transferred to Indiana, and he was supposedly the Heisman favorite.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: And I wasn't that impressed from 2024, so I I kind of let it go up until I heard the Heisman Trophy speech.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And I almost didn't watch it, and I heard that man speak, and it wasn't so much his words, because like in in communication, a lot of us get caught up in words, and words are only 7% of of of really what's felt, uh what's uh shared.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Uh close to 50% is body language, and the remainder is tone.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: And when I saw the hu the character of the human being, like that person, I I just became a huge, a huge fan.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: And so I I rooted and got um I I got torn up in South Florida when I put on an Indiana jersey against the you.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: And I'm not loyal and and you know, I'm I got all this crazy stuff, and and I'm I'm I'm getting somewhere with this.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: I want you to chime in.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: And this is the truth.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Are are we if my loyalty is questioned because I don't root for a teen, then it's not loyalty, it's tribalism.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: And if you don't know what that is, I I I'll I'll I'll explain.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Uh but my loyalty is to character, to principles, to my values, and and and then people try to get into like, whoa, you mean Crystal Ball doesn't?
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: No, that's not what I said.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: I think Crystal Ball's an exceptional man.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: But young people like as yourselves, who do you resonate with more?
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: The quarterback who's closer in your age, this is for the for this part's really for for young people, um, or with a head coach.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: And yeah, share a little bit about that and and why.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Um see, I don't know who I resonate with more.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Uh the probably probably the players.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: Um I'm an athlete myself and I play sports.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: I don't play football, but basketball I do.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: I played football freshman year.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Would have been one hell of a college safety for sure, definitely.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: I didn't like it that much, to be honest.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, I'd probably resonate more with players because like of the athleticism and stuff, and uh and basketball seeing what I could do better uh by watching them play.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: Um was that your question?
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Or well yeah, I was just you know I I find that that the closer somebody is in age, like you can resonate with them, like they're they're closer to you.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: And again, like I was a huge Tim Tebow fan.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: I was never a Gator fan, but uh I I I was a huge T Bowl fan when when Tebow played for the Broncos.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Like I was I I was T bowing it, like you know, getting on the knees, and I I wanted him to win because we need greater mentors, leaders for for for our young people.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Like that's for me, it's not about me.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Like selfishly, yeah.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: I'm a dolphins fan.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: But I'm not looking at the lens from like my team, my team.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but how about my people?
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Like us as human beings, us as like our future, like uh every day and twice on Sunday, pun intended, when it comes to the NFL.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm rooting for Mendoza, never been a part of the Raider Nation, but Mendoza winning represents to me the future of our young men, the future of what it is to lead, like real leadership, with grace, with character, with principles, with values, with with with faith that's aligned with what we want for our children.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Um so so that's really you know.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: So, what'd you think when you saw dad coming out with that, coming out with a jersey, and saying that guy, I'm dad, remember that.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Uh I don't know, he already has an Indiana jersey.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: So I guess uh Tim T, I mean Tim Tebu.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: If uh Mendoza switches teams, he'll get that jersey too.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: I I'm I'm rooting for Mendoza.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Like I I'm rooting for Mendoza, ride or die, and and and again, as a Dolphin fan, and I want to let let's what's gonna make this all well, yeah.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Let's go with this.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Um my favorite player in the NFL as a football player, and he may very well go on to be my favorite football player of all time, you know, is against like our arch rival, which is Josh Allen.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Josh Allen.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: So oh yeah, Josh Allen I see the comments drop like crazy.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Uh the way he plays, he plays with courage, with fire, with conviction, with leaving it all on the field.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: And you know that that's what what lessons can you learn from people like that?
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: What are your thoughts on on that from hearing that from your dad?
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, before I say that, um everyone's like Josh Allen, uh, Josh Allen, why is he your favorite player?
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: But if he was on the Dolphins, I know all of you guys would be really happy.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: So um he would he would have taken us to a Super Bowl, that's for sure.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Uh but yeah, I mean uh my dad's always said when I played, like, to give it all you got, leave it all on the floor.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: Um that he would never get mad at me if I score zero points or if I score 30.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: But that he just cares about how much effort I put, and um that's what Josh Allen does.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: He just he leaves it all on there, and he doesn't care if he gets hurt, he doesn't care what it takes, but he just wants to win.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: And he's a he's a winner, he hasn't won yet, but he will soon, that's for sure.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and what's what with the irony on that, there's just so many things I want to share on there.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: The irony on that is when I became like this Josh Allen fan, it was against the Dolphins, and I remember him, I don't know what the play was, and he's coming up, and he like comes crushed, dead on hit with Christian Wilkinson.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Like Christian Wilkins.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Wilkins, what Christian Wilkins, 320, 30 pound, big dude, and Josh Allen's just like, what's up?
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: No, come on.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: And it wasn't like you know, getting into like necessarily a fight, but it was that fire, that passion, and what I love, love about sports, and and what I love about that is and to what you mentioned, son, about leaving it all on the field most of you out there listening are not athletes, or you're not gonna be professional athletes, but you are gonna be in a profession in life.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: You are going to be, or you are going to desire relationships in life.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Love.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Love is the oxygen of life.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: If you don't put everything on the field in your profession, in your relationships, in your life, you're gonna have a life that's below average, or as you young uh people like to say, mid.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: Did I use mid right?
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, kind of.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Kind of.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: You're gonna have an average life.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: You're not average.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: No one was born to be average.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: You were born to be extra ordinary.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: So live that life.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: That's that's what I love about about sports.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: And in relation to to what is one of the things that that I've kind of like uh share.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: Well, I'll just add on to that.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Um the reason I tell I've told my son always, it doesn't mat like of course I want him to put up as many points and do great and lights out and everything else, but ultimately, like, who is it that you gotta face in the mirror after the game is over?
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Or after you're in a relationship and the person says, I'm out.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna fight?
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna fight with everything you have?
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna fight like you did to get at the beginning of the relationship?
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Because if you fought at the end, like you did in the beginning, there'd be no end.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: If we approach life with passion, with fire, with energy, with I'm gonna give it all my all I have in every avenue in life as a parent, as a teacher, as a leader, in your relationships, in whatever profession you are, doesn't matter what's in the bank account.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: You win at the game of life.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Um there?
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: Um, not really, no.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: So uh I I got fired up there.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: Um basketball season's coming up soon, too.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: So yeah, basketball season's coming up, and on that front, uh Son.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: You know, this is a great bridge here to where we're going.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: You mentioning the basketball.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: You dunked for the first time.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I did.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Taught him everything.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: So what was that, what was that like?
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: And how can yeah, sure.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Well, how was that like what did that feel like?
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, I've of course I've tried to dunk before and I haven't been successful, but we're in practice the other day and we're doing some transition drills.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: Um came down the middle of the floor, uh, I got the ball passed to me, and I just I yammed it.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: Yammed it.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's what we're parents.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm I'm I swear I'm building out like I'm building out this I'm building out a book.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: I've been building it up for a while.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm building out several books, but one particular to understand young people's language.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Yammed it.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: I hadn't heard that one before.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, my teammates got all hyped.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: My coach was like super impressed and shocked.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: Um it was a good feeling.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh I mean it's like it was it was awesome.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: I I I love it.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: I loved it.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Okay, so so pay attention, because I think I'm gonna drop a a gem here, uh a nugget.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Um did you really do anything differently than you've done before when you've attempted that?
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: No, I think I've just over over time, over the summer, I got it more explosive.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: Um I've been working on my quickness and stuff.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Uh so yeah, I mean I got more explosive, and honestly, I I think I before I would think about it too much, to be honest, like I just went up and like I wasn't even thinking about dunking, to be honest.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: I was just like I was going, I was gonna go for a layup and I I saw myself right there and I just turned my wrist and and I dunked it.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: And yeah, it was it was like just in the moment I didn't I didn't think about it, I just went up.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: So let me ask you on that.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: And what happened after that?
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: After that, my teammates got all hyped and or what happened to me?
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Did you try and do it again?
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, I did it again and I dunked it again.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: Um and then later on in practice I tried again, but I was already super tired, so uh I I missed, but that's cool.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: But but after you did it, that you had never done it before, you were able to do it again.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: And if you were to go back out now in the court when you go out and you wanted to do it.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, the day after I did it again, and the day after I did it again, so Because you just mentioned something.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: This is super powerful.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: I want you to sit with this and I want you to realize I want you to catch this.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: You mentioned that you were thinking about it, and you would think about it, and and and at this time when you finally got up, elevated and all the training and the explosiveness and all that.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: But the core was what happened fundamentally.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: You believed that you could.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: And you did it.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: And then what happened after you did it?
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: You you just said you did it again.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: You did it again.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Alex Bannister, uh, 1940s.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Nobody had ever broke broken uh I'm gonna share the story, the four-minute mile.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: They said it was doctors, physicians say it was impossible to do it.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: No one had ever done it.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: And in May, uh, I believe it was 1948.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Uh you can fact check me, maybe I'm off.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: But ran the mile.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Three minutes, 59 seconds, he broke the four-minute mile.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Within a year, six people broke it as well.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: Within a decade, over a hundred and some odd people had broken something that nobody had ever done before and said that it was impossible to do.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: But it happened because somebody, he believed he could do it, and then what happened after?
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Another person did it.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Another person did it because they saw it was possible.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: So this is like everything in our lives that it it starts with the fundamental belief that it can be done.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: And when you visualize it happening and you just go for it, like we go so often in our lives, and we're so afraid of not getting the thing.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Like when you didn't dunk, you were thinking, Oh, can I do it?
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: Can I do it?
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, I don't know, can I, can I?
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: When you just went up and said, You know what?
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: I'm going for it.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Am I putting words in your mouth, or is that and you did it, and then what happens?
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Probably put shoulders up.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what's up?
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Inside, I mean, you don't not not from a cocky place, but inside, man, it feels good to win because you defeated something within yourself that you're like, I want to do this, I wanna do this, and you did it, man.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like that five regrets of the dying.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: Number one regret is I wish I had the courage to live the life that I my own life.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: And what that has to do with this is is is to go for it.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Like, go for it.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Don't leave nothing on the table.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: You know, like uh you I want to share a story.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Um I want you to share a story about a couple years ago when you started uh one of the times you started with a team that you were at for a while in Travel Ball, and kind of like what happened.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: You remember with Coach Ralph that first tournament?
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Who was with Coach Ralph, the team?
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, with Coach Ralph and and like I mean, I used to get really, really I used to get really heated um after after the first game.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Um Yeah, my dad got mad at me.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: Uh was this one the one in Orlando or the one that was here?
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: It was somewhere, I don't know where it was.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I'm gonna mention two of the stories then.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: There was one in uh Deerfield Beach, DSportsplex.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Um and my dad got mad at me that day that I didn't put in my effort and stuff.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was like my first tournament, I think, with them.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: And uh my coach was like, nah, he played awesome.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: What do you mean?
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Uh he scored this and that points or whatever.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: Which I didn't really score that much anyways, but I mean whatever.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: So he said that to my dad.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: And my dad's like, I don't care about the points.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, he trust me, like he didn't give all he's had, uh all he got, and and I'll make sure he does like next game.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm gonna I'll I'll talk to himself.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: So my dad talked to me and said, like, um, if you don't give it all you got, like, this is gonna be your last last uh game with this team.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Um uh you've always like you've never played like you just did, and and you're thinking way too much and stuff.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: So I did.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: I I went out there and and I played and we we had a great game, and my coach was like even more impressed than he was the first game.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: Um Yeah.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: And there was this other game uh in Orlando that I don't know what happened that game.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: It wasn't about like my effort, I don't think.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: I think or maybe it was a little bit, maybe I was like maybe it was my attitude, I'm not sure.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Then the game after he put me, uh my dad told the coach to put me on the bench.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Um and he did, he put me the coach put me on the bench, and I came off the bench and and um I I popped off.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, scored a lot and played hard and yeah.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: This is the thing, and and I I'm not like I wanted him to share those stories because it wasn't about me writing him or I don't actually, you know, I I maybe I learned something, maybe there was part of that.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: I I don't know.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: I'm I don't this is all like the goal here by the way.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: He was writing me, but like I wanna be like when it comes to that, I wanna like get all the advice that I can, even if I'm stubborn sometimes, because sometimes they'll tell myself and I'll agree.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: But uh it's the truth.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, when you see a basketball game from the outside, there's a reason teams watch film, like if you see it from the outside, you see more of it than when you're actually playing because you're you're in the game.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: So yeah, he tells me stuff and I'm stubborn, but I I I listen.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: And and and what what where I'm getting at is it's not about writing him for mistakes he makes.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: I I I don't walk he's my son.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Like I I I Love him with everything I have, but I don't care.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Like I care, but I don't care.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Like what I care, like it because um and again I keep saying this, you know, I don't know what episode, but I'll I'll share kind of like my whole testimony, especially for those uh people.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: I know there's a lot of people who don't really know and they're getting clips, but I'll do a whole segment uh on that and share it all there.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Um but like I know what it's like to fight those those demons of I wish I could have, I would have, or if I only you know would have been this version of myself.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: Like I don't I don't want him to leave any regrets.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Like leave it all on the table.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: You give your best, you look in the mirror, you're like if I lost, I lost.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: But it's not a loss because you learn.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: It's only a loss when you stay in the sh I could have, I didn't, I was tired.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Gotta be a like I think you guys still say this right, be a dog, be hungry, you know, like not just in sports.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Sports is a metaphor for life.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: Like so perfect transition um here, son.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Uh, we're probably gonna go over on this episode.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: Um what do you think?
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Um I see a lot in sports parents living through their kids.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Like uh I don't know if you see that since you're like normally playing, but how how often do you see that a lot?
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: And what are your thoughts on that?
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: What do you mean by parents living through their kids?
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: Like sometimes, like um and and I I I'm alright, well then I'm gonna jump in here too for me.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm talking to parents in general, but I'm all I was also gonna get part two was kind of like if if I if you felt that way from from me as a dad, where I'm pushing you because part of me wishes that I would have continued.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Guarantee I could have believed all I wanted, and I was never going to dunk.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Never.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: I don't have his athleticism, by the way, and I don't have his height.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: He's got my DNA, but I I didn't get any of that hype.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: Um, but a lot of parents try and my sport was baseball and and martial arts.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: Try and live their their dreams through their through their children and push them because part of them, maybe you're too young to see this, or maybe not, like this is part of them wishes that they would have tried harder, looked at themselves in the mirror and pushed themselves further, and they live in the regret.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: Like do you see that sometimes when maybe like I mean, some kids maybe in high school, or maybe uh as you've seen, sometimes um let's call it for what it is.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Like you you see sometimes some parents, not so much the kids, but the parents switching kids to other schools, to other leagues, to other teams, so that they can get playing time thinking it's for the kid.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: But it's really not the kid.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: It's their kid, their younger self that wishes that they could still be playing, yet you're 50 years old and 40 something or something.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: Uh I mean I don't see it a lot in high school, to be honest.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think it's more of those transfers and stuff are the kids like decision, at least the people I know.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, middle school and stuff like that.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, I was referring to the majority of kids, like a lot of kids have played sports.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: When you get to high school, now you're talking about a a smaller group of people that are there.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: I'm talking generally about like throughout like the league, like, oh my son, I want him to play, and then you know, kind of like have you maybe this isn't something you sit with yet because you're you're young, but do you see that sometimes or or have you felt like sometimes their parents are pushing really hard for their kid when that's just not their their thing, they don't care, like the kids.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean like um big sport honestly is is cross country.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: A lot of kids like like I'll ask a bunch of kids like oh like when I used to like do cross country in middle school and like I I did it all my life till eighth grade.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: Um I was like, oh like did you like um like you wanted to do this or like you just got forced to and like I got forced to?
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: Like it was probably like 60-70%, or maybe even more honestly, like that they just got forced to.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: I understand cross country maybe like oh I want my kid to lose weight or stay active and stuff, but like there's a lot of other ways that you could do that.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: Um and like if the kid doesn't want to, I mean I wouldn't I'm not gonna force my kid to do something.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: I would love for him to play sports and stuff when I have kids, but I'm not gonna force for him to do something that he doesn't want to do.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: Like uh my dad, like my freshman year, I played football.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: I wanted to play football in my freshman year.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: I wanted to see how it was.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: My sophomore year I didn't want to play, and he kept like begging me and like almost forcing me to play.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: I was like, I'm not playing, like I don't I I don't like it, and it wasn't my thing.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: Um I looked fly I love flag football, it's a lot more action.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Um Well, let me just not say more action, but just like in high school, it was just like I played safety, so there's not a lot of like uh deep ball or anything like that.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: So it was hard.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: It was just like a boring position for me, to be honest.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: Like I didn't really have to do much, and I could have changed positions, but I just I decided not to.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: I decided to just stick to basketball.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: So yeah, well, I I I I well first I we're gonna we're not gonna agree on the cross country.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: I I think look, not kids, especially more than ever, like we're so disconnected.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: Um kids need to be active.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're too young.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: I think sports is should be.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm not gonna mandate anything on anyone, but I I think it's really it's crucial.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, i if you want to Yeah, I'm not saying like to keep your kids at home and stuff, like yeah, do something active with them, but it doesn't have to be like forced.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Like ask them what they want, you know, ask them what like what sports interests you or like what do you want to do.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: So that's really good.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: I'm glad you mentioned that because it's not just about sports, about active.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: Like a lot of people like, oh well, I uh I don't I I hate running, I don't want to lose weight.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: And they associate like activity with like running, and instead of well, what else do you like that's has movement?
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: Men don't don't.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: We're not going there.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: But like w what else do you do you like to dance?
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: Do you like biking?
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Do you like you know, what else do you enjoy doing that's maintaining active instead of clo yeah, would running, would you lose weight quicker?
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: But maintaining an active lifestyle, I'm I'm glad I'm glad you mentioned that.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Uh now, and yes, I still think he would have been a hell of a freaking football player.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: Uh just his natural instinct.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: So, son, to to kind of like start wrapping this up, you know, what do you think is is sports teaches people, those people who who are part of uh participating in sports, what do you think are the greatest lessons that people can l you know take in in sports that they can take with them in their in their life?
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: Um, leadership, teamwork, unity, selflessness is a big one.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: Um hard work that the work ethic that the athletes put in is it's like it's insane.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, even in high school, it's like football practices my freshman year.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: I'd get up at four in the morning, drive to school, get to school at five in the morning, practice after school, go wait weightlifting, then have practice for basketball at four.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: Like it was like ridiculous.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: There's your answer to why he didn't want to play football.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: He not at all.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: Um but it's a lot of work ethic and it's a lot of uh discipline.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: You need you need that discipline to make it a practice on time, responsibility, um know the plays.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: It's and it's it's a lot of like I said, like a lot of hard work and and getting up early, early mornings, late nights.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: Um you gotta be committed to that sport if you really want to play it.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: So So what you're sounding like is if you grab the forget the sports and the because it what you mentioned, you didn't really start diagnosing of like, you know, how to hit a layup from here, hit the three.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: You're talking about resilience, discipline, teamwork, how to work together.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: You know, I would just add one thing, how to lose with grace and and dignity.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: Um also knowing like just you want to win, you know, you gotta be like my dad said, you gotta be hungry, you gotta wanna win.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: Um yeah.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: So that that was that was perfect.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: Like that was you you you put together, uh I I can't I don't know how to pronounce the word in cap in cap We'll leave that for another moment.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Um But you you put together exactly how you grab those traits from sports, and if you transition those just those things into your everyday life, discipline, working as a team, making it about we, those people, parents in relationships, young people in relationships, not about I'm right or you're right, it's about we.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: This transitions into every avenue of your life as a team, you're gonna win at the game of life, without a doubt.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Uh any final thoughts, takeaways?
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: No, not really.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Uh good luck to the Heat.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: Can't really say good luck to the Dolphins because there's no really luck there.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: Well, actually, the luck is if they lose every game and then they get a manning, we get a manning in the house.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: Uh good luck to the Heat.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: I think that's it.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, I just said like about the takeaway.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: I just said about the togetherness.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: No, no, listen, listen, whatever you're doing, five, find togetherness, be in community.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: Do like it.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: If you're into the arts, find some people to do the arts with.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Learn to work together into a cohesive unit.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: Look, uh, we understand there's a lot of distractions going on, especially with social media.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: Put stuff away, put the phones away, get in in unison and in the bonding and part of the human experience and grow and fail and laugh and learn together.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: And for parents, this is my my biggest takeaway.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: When your kid, if your kid is playing a sport, when they lose, are you upset about them and the actual loss, or is it a part of you that is aching because you feel as it if you lost with them?
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: That's the difference if you're living your life through the lens of your kid, or if you're just supporting them.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: That's what we got.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: So that's it for this week of Frankie and Johnny conversations we never had.
