1:47
[SPEAKER_02]: That's me Kyle Meredith today talking with Steve Zahn and daughter and actress Audrey Zahn of course Steve who played everyone from a lini and that thing you do Mark in the white lotus he was Sammy in reality by Davis McAllery and Tramey
2:03
[SPEAKER_02]: he's had an incredible career and his daughter Audrey is now in in perfect women on Apple TV but we are going to be talking about turning their real-life father-daughter dynamic and the years that she spent in the competitive dance world into the the new heartfelt indie film called She Dances.
2:21
[SPEAKER_02]: Drawing from Audrey's upbringing in dance competitions and layering in a quiet, but powerful story of grief, the two are going to discuss how the film became a deeply personal family affair.
2:33
[SPEAKER_02]: Even featuring cameos from their, like, his wife is in it, their son is in it, you know, Audrey's brother, they get into the chaos and camaraderie of dance culture, the decision to avoid broad comedy and favor of something more honest, and how their new production company
2:51
[SPEAKER_02]: We'll also take a look at Indy filmmaking, how it's finding it's putting again with Kentucky as the backdrop.
2:57
[SPEAKER_02]: In fact, Steve and Audrey live not too far from me here at Louisville.
3:00
[SPEAKER_02]: They live a midway Kentucky, just a couple hours away.
3:03
[SPEAKER_02]: And how sometimes the most intimate stories do hit the hardest.
3:07
[SPEAKER_02]: We're talking all about the movie, she dances, it's Kyle Meredith with Steve Zahn and Audrey Zahn.
3:13
[SPEAKER_03]: Hello.
3:14
[SPEAKER_03]: Hi.
3:15
[SPEAKER_02]: How's it going?
3:15
[SPEAKER_03]: We're good.
3:17
[SPEAKER_03]: How are you?
3:18
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm well from I think just right down the road if you guys are back at home.
3:22
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm in Louisville, so.
3:24
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, right.
3:26
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
3:26
[SPEAKER_04]: That's right.
3:26
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
3:27
[SPEAKER_02]: We are on a farm outside Midway using Zoom to go all the way around the world up to a satellite.
3:33
[SPEAKER_02]: Just for being right down the road.
3:35
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, isn't there, buddy?
3:36
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like hey, I'm going to text you you're outside by the pond.
3:39
[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
3:41
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a satellite.
3:43
[SPEAKER_04]: It's insane.
3:44
[SPEAKER_02]: I do all the time.
3:45
[SPEAKER_02]: My son, you know, he'd just be down to this room.
3:47
[SPEAKER_02]: And instead of like yelling like it's, you know, the 80s, I can just, I can just text into.
3:52
[SPEAKER_04]: Whereas like my parents used to, I was in the basement.
3:54
[SPEAKER_04]: I had my room was in the basement.
3:56
[SPEAKER_04]: So they would just go.
3:58
[SPEAKER_04]: It was like three mom would go boom, boom, boom, that meant dinner.
4:02
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, up her face.
4:03
[SPEAKER_02]: He's in the basement.
4:04
[SPEAKER_02]: I've tried that.
4:05
[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't work for him.
4:06
[SPEAKER_02]: That would be great.
4:07
[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know attention.
4:07
[SPEAKER_04]: You've got a sound house.
4:09
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like for tornadoes.
4:13
[SPEAKER_02]: It's safe for tornadoes.
4:14
[SPEAKER_02]: She dances what a beautiful movie that you all made.
4:18
[SPEAKER_02]: No, thanks.
4:19
[SPEAKER_02]: And let's start with the obvious spot.
4:21
[SPEAKER_02]: Cause even I know you co-wrote this and everything.
4:23
[SPEAKER_02]: And this sort of dips into real life and this fictionalized version where it is this story come from.
4:29
[SPEAKER_04]: It comes from here.
4:30
[SPEAKER_04]: It comes from Audrey Dance since she was four.
4:34
[SPEAKER_04]: My son danced.
4:35
[SPEAKER_04]: for about five years, I'd say.
4:38
[SPEAKER_04]: And we were well entrenched in the subculture of competitive dance, going to, you know, sitting in parking, for me, sitting in parking lots and waiting for her, she danced for hours a day, five days a week and being a dance dad and being a charge of logistics.
4:59
[SPEAKER_04]: And it was a unique,
5:02
[SPEAKER_04]: thing to be involved with, and it was really beautiful, and it was horrible, and it was funny, and it was dumb, and it was all the things, right?
5:15
[SPEAKER_04]: Over a decade in this, and, but we knew that this was a world that we could represent truthfully, and so my partner Rick O'Meas, who directed this,
5:32
[SPEAKER_04]: And then it took on, you know, a story and the catalyst of grief and yeah, so that's the biggest thing like realizing Realizing the moments where it's like this could be something like this thing that we're just doing.
5:46
[SPEAKER_02]: It actually could be something.
5:48
[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
5:49
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
5:50
[SPEAKER_04]: I've never been involved with something that was like
5:53
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I got an idea, and now we're talking about it because you saw it, you know what I mean, and you have an opinion about it.
6:01
[SPEAKER_04]: That's really unbelievable.
6:04
[SPEAKER_04]: It's almost impossible to get to this point.
6:07
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, as an actor, I'm plugged in.
6:10
[SPEAKER_04]: We get plugged into projects that somebody else that is shepherded and prepped and put all this work into.
6:17
[SPEAKER_04]: And then when you go through the process, when you're plugged into that process, you do the best thing you can for them because you know how hard it is.
6:26
[SPEAKER_02]: but you're seeing it from the beginning to the end for the whole thing, and that's the impossible because a movie is impossible to make.
6:32
[SPEAKER_02]: That's the line, like it said a lot of movies and impossible things, so if you actually will it's impossible to make a bad movie?
6:39
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, just to show up on set the first day.
6:43
[SPEAKER_04]: Just to get there.
6:44
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, sometimes that's where you go on movies and there'll be like, it's kind of this you for it feeling, all the producers are like, we did it!
6:51
[SPEAKER_04]: And we're like, it's day one.
6:54
[SPEAKER_02]: You know for us, but you're not doing that, you're right, yeah.
6:58
[SPEAKER_04]: We could still really screw this up, guys.
7:01
[SPEAKER_02]: And sometimes you do.
7:03
[SPEAKER_02]: And we'll be right back right into this.
7:06
[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back, it's Kyle Minton with Steve and Audrey Zahn.
7:09
[SPEAKER_02]: Audrey, you have been dancing.
7:11
[SPEAKER_02]: You've done choreography for some stuff.
7:13
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I thought it was interesting.
7:15
[SPEAKER_02]: This was coming, you know, not too far off of Wildcat, which of yours you were both worked on too and everything.
7:21
[SPEAKER_02]: But we get that title screen introducing Audrey's on, which I don't know if your lawyer's a manager has had to argue for that, but...
7:32
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, they weren't one of my encouragements.
7:35
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I don't really have anything to do with it at all, but it was really fun to see that for the first time because I waited to watch the movie till it premiered at Tribeca, which, of course, I was freaking out so nervous for, so I'm never going to do that again.
7:50
[SPEAKER_03]: But it was, it was really cool, really cool experience.
7:53
[SPEAKER_02]: So how, when did you, like, they have this idea and it's going to dip into this world that you grow up in, you hadn't officially been acting at this point.
8:02
[SPEAKER_02]: And then, like, how does that happen?
8:04
[SPEAKER_02]: Is there a decision that has to be made?
8:06
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I was acting.
8:08
[SPEAKER_03]: I was just doing musical theater.
8:11
[SPEAKER_03]: after college and all that good stuff.
8:13
[SPEAKER_03]: But I knew about this movie for a long time.
8:16
[SPEAKER_03]: It was kind of in the works for like four years.
8:19
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
8:19
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, this has been in the family for a long time.
8:21
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
8:22
[SPEAKER_03]: And so it's put it during COVID.
8:23
[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
8:24
[SPEAKER_04]: So it's been a while.
8:25
[SPEAKER_04]: And so Audrey, you know, is fresh to her first feature, but she's also knows the reality of filmmaking just because
8:33
[SPEAKER_04]: She is in a family of filmmakers, so, um, and storytellers.
8:37
[SPEAKER_04]: So she understands that these things take time, and it might not happen, you know, and, and, and it did happen.
8:45
[SPEAKER_04]: And it all along that was Audrey and I, it was never like, you know, we got, we see something and you kid, we're gonna write you a script.
8:53
[SPEAKER_04]: It wasn't that.
8:54
[SPEAKER_04]: We just saw a really cool story.
8:56
[SPEAKER_04]: And the character that she plays, Claire, in our eyes, was only played by her.
9:03
[SPEAKER_04]: So if it wasn't played by her, then the movie wouldn't have happened.
9:06
[SPEAKER_02]: But there was no like sit down moment like, all right, do you want to be in the mood like it sounds like it happened very natural?
9:12
[SPEAKER_02]: I guess is what I'm getting at.
9:13
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I guess there was, yeah, there wasn't a moment.
9:15
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I remember the first time they gave me the script, but I had known about it for a while, but I just had it seen it yet.
9:22
[SPEAKER_03]: And I remember reading it and crying and going for a really long walk.
9:26
[SPEAKER_03]: Because it's very close to my childhood and how I grew up in competitive dance.
9:31
[SPEAKER_03]: It was close to home, but I always knew that it was going to be really special and I was excited to do it, and nervous, but excited.
9:38
[SPEAKER_02]: So what is it?
9:39
[SPEAKER_02]: What is it about that world, Audrey, about competitive dancing that is so interesting, that you all have put up on the screen very well?
9:47
[SPEAKER_03]: So many things, people don't realize how pressuring and crazy sauce it is.
9:54
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, if you go to a competition, there's going to be kids in the hallway with like sparkly crazy costumes with their legs behind their head.
10:01
[SPEAKER_03]: And then there's a ton of props, there's props, there's dance moms, and they're all really intense for some reason.
10:09
[SPEAKER_03]: you in the awards is like five hours and you're stuck in a theater for like three days It's hard to find your kid.
10:17
[SPEAKER_04]: They all look this You know, and everything's the same thing and the same like, wait, where are you?
10:22
[SPEAKER_04]: A bunch of makeup like sparsely and then like four or four girls turn around
10:26
[SPEAKER_03]: Which Audrey, Aubrey or Dree?
10:29
[SPEAKER_03]: I know.
10:30
[SPEAKER_03]: It's actually, it's pretty crazy, but it's so fun if you're a part of it.
10:36
[SPEAKER_03]: And you also have a great camaraderie with your other dancers, because you're just with each other all the time, sweating in a studio and then performing together.
10:43
[SPEAKER_03]: So it's a really cool experience.
10:45
[SPEAKER_02]: It seems like you all could have made a choice.
10:48
[SPEAKER_02]: If you wanted to go the route of like a best-in-show mighty wind, that type of a thing.
10:55
[SPEAKER_02]: But I feel like there's moments you do kind of slip in there a little bit as you're talking about.
11:01
[SPEAKER_02]: But to tell the story, you brought in the grief story.
11:03
[SPEAKER_02]: And that added so much weight into it.
11:07
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, where did that come?
11:09
[SPEAKER_02]: When did that come?
11:10
[SPEAKER_02]: How did that come?
11:11
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's interesting, it's our sensibility as filmmakers of macaroni art, our production company, we're just really kind of like, we're really void of any cynicism, it's really kind of our kind of one of our stamps that we were proud of.
11:25
[SPEAKER_04]: And so we didn't go the route of some kind of wacky comedy.
11:30
[SPEAKER_04]: And Jason Reed is one of our initial producer, who is a dear friend and an amazing producer, who's done huge stuff.
11:41
[SPEAKER_04]: And he came to us and he just said, I wanted, it was during COVID, it was like, I want something, I want to produce something that's like, it's just a story about people.
11:50
[SPEAKER_04]: It's simple, it's honest.
11:53
[SPEAKER_04]: And then we started pitching this thing and then we started talking about experiences and one thing we all share was grief.
12:00
[SPEAKER_04]: And we thought, wow, that's it.
12:03
[SPEAKER_04]: I think that's the hurdle that these guys gonna have to deal with.
12:10
[SPEAKER_04]: And it works really well.
12:11
[SPEAKER_04]: And we don't, what I love about,
12:15
[SPEAKER_04]: what we wrote and what ended up on screen and Kobe told on our editor is just as responsible for this.
12:23
[SPEAKER_04]: We never yell at you.
12:25
[SPEAKER_04]: We whisper, you know, it's always there.
12:28
[SPEAKER_04]: It's always kind of lurking right there.
12:31
[SPEAKER_04]: And it just pops up and it just punches you in the face, man.
12:34
[SPEAKER_04]: And it's it's it's it's it's it's not a gimmick how we do that.
12:38
[SPEAKER_04]: It's just you just get lost.
12:40
[SPEAKER_04]: You get lost in characters.
12:41
[SPEAKER_04]: It's really simple story.
12:42
[SPEAKER_04]: It's really honest.
12:44
[SPEAKER_04]: It was just kind of start laughing and he wrapped up in this world.
12:47
[SPEAKER_04]: And then all of a sudden, you know, you go to rehearsal room.
12:50
[SPEAKER_04]: See.
12:51
[SPEAKER_02]: And it's like that line man.
12:53
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
12:53
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
12:54
[SPEAKER_02]: Can we talk about him?
12:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Like as you're saying, it did.
12:57
[SPEAKER_02]: It just punches you right in the gut.
13:00
[SPEAKER_04]: You can.
13:01
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, right, we have this part of the story.
13:03
[SPEAKER_04]: I forgot about this.
13:04
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
13:06
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
13:06
[SPEAKER_04]: We have to rule with this.
13:07
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
13:08
[SPEAKER_02]: And watching the way your all's relationship develops over the course of the movie, too.
13:12
[SPEAKER_02]: Like I love the use of the split screens.
13:16
[SPEAKER_04]: you know, because because they're they're so at odds, but you can tell there's so much alike in these comments, you know, we were talking about it earlier, Rick and I, and it was like, you know, if it's done well, these things that, you know, we didn't come up with that, that's been in many movies.
13:31
[SPEAKER_04]: But if you use it in the right way, and it fits the movie, and in which I think we use it really beautifully, it feels like it's the first time, you know what
13:42
[SPEAKER_04]: It feels like you're using it for the first time.
13:45
[SPEAKER_04]: It just works and we've wrote it in the script.
13:48
[SPEAKER_04]: It was really important that we had that kind of element because we felt like we wouldn't waste time explaining too much.
13:56
[SPEAKER_04]: You could witness it, watch it.
13:58
[SPEAKER_04]: You could see that we...
14:00
[SPEAKER_04]: Love each other, but we live apart.
14:04
[SPEAKER_04]: Why?
14:04
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, because of this thing.
14:06
[SPEAKER_04]: But they're trying.
14:07
[SPEAKER_04]: They're at a place where they're working it out.
14:10
[SPEAKER_04]: They have codes for each other, white flag.
14:13
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, great.
14:13
[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to talk.
14:15
[SPEAKER_04]: And so it starts hopeful, you know what I mean?
14:18
[SPEAKER_04]: Which is kind of what I love about it.
14:22
[SPEAKER_04]: And you see how tight we are.
14:24
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
14:24
[SPEAKER_04]: You know.
14:25
[SPEAKER_03]: Even it's strange for you.
14:27
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
14:27
[SPEAKER_04]: We don't have to, we don't have the three other scenes
14:30
[SPEAKER_04]: some of a lot of my favorite movies like I think that's that's the tool that they use it's it's the not like I'm not going to explain to you everything I trust you as an audience you're going to get there right exactly exactly and you get pressure from like producers and people that we worked with you know along the way it was like we don't know about this we're going to go faster we're going to we got to get there quicker and you're like you know
14:59
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, explain that.
14:59
[SPEAKER_04]: What do you mean?
15:00
[SPEAKER_04]: Like shorter?
15:00
[SPEAKER_04]: Do you want to say that to in the movie faster?
15:05
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it's 90 minutes.
15:06
[SPEAKER_04]: You want it 70 minutes?
15:08
[SPEAKER_02]: But you trust your gut as a filmmaker.
15:10
[SPEAKER_02]: Someone who's been doing this for a very long time.
15:13
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and don't get me wrong.
15:14
[SPEAKER_04]: When I sit in this movie, I watch that I mean, we've watched that I don't even know how many times.
15:19
[SPEAKER_04]: But whenever this split screen comes in, I get nervous because I'm like, there are people going to
15:26
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like, well, this is a long scene, but it's really important in it pays off later.
15:32
[SPEAKER_02]: It pays off and we'll be right back right after this.
15:36
[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back.
15:37
[SPEAKER_02]: It's Kyle, man.
15:37
[SPEAKER_02]: It was Steve and Audrey's on.
15:40
[SPEAKER_02]: Audrey, I know you grew up seeing him and everything, but you know, in the acting portion of this, you're kind of mimicking him, but nuts.
15:48
[SPEAKER_02]: Again, we're seeing how similar you are, but like, was there any of that going through your mind?
15:55
[SPEAKER_03]: I never matched my dad on purpose.
15:59
[SPEAKER_03]: I think that my dad and I are very similar and I've grown up watching my dad, like I've been on set, watching him do his thing and also we watched the same movies.
16:09
[SPEAKER_03]: Like the movies that inspired my dad, he sat me down and I was young and we watched all of them and he would like pause in a million times and tell me what was going on and I was like, please stop pausing.
16:20
[SPEAKER_03]: But I learned a lot through that and acting all of the time is just kind of mimicking other people and making the things you like from them.
16:29
[SPEAKER_03]: So I think in that way, I've kind of, we've kind of developed similar things.
16:34
[SPEAKER_03]: But I love that.
16:34
[SPEAKER_03]: Like my favorite part is the split screen at the end when we're coming back to see each other again We make the same face.
16:42
[SPEAKER_03]: And that was just, you know, I love that part.
16:46
[SPEAKER_03]: So I like being compared to you.
16:49
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, my real mom said she's in the movie and then that moment is that Claire come on.
16:54
[SPEAKER_04]: We need to watch the child state.
16:56
[SPEAKER_04]: It's so great.
16:57
[SPEAKER_04]: No.
16:58
[SPEAKER_02]: It's a cat.
16:59
[SPEAKER_02]: It is.
16:59
[SPEAKER_02]: And Audrey, I imagine you also choreographed the actual dance, which by the way, I've had Kinsey on here.
17:04
[SPEAKER_02]: Kinsey's been on the show.
17:06
[SPEAKER_02]: No, cool.
17:07
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
17:08
[SPEAKER_02]: It was great to see her on there, too, and knowing her background and dance, everything.
17:12
[SPEAKER_02]: But like, who choreographed then?
17:14
[SPEAKER_03]: Jamie Harvner, so he was my dance teacher from 11 onward.
17:21
[SPEAKER_03]: He choreographed all my solo lessons.
17:23
[SPEAKER_03]: Here in Lexington, we actually went to the same studio for a little bit.
17:27
[SPEAKER_03]: He was one of the older kids.
17:30
[SPEAKER_03]: So I completely trusted him to choreograph this.
17:32
[SPEAKER_03]: He was the only person that I wanted to because we just have like a connection dance-wise where
17:40
[SPEAKER_03]: He kind of developed his choreography style on me and I developed my movement style from him basically so it was kind of the perfect match and another weird connection Haley fish who plays Marla was also a big girl at my dance school and Jamie and Haley won nationals with their duet.
17:59
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh wow.
18:00
[SPEAKER_03]: So it's all kind of
18:02
[SPEAKER_04]: So, you know, I've known Hayley and Jayme, he's lived here for a year.
18:07
[SPEAKER_04]: He's just a son.
18:09
[SPEAKER_04]: And Hayley, Hayley, and known them since they were in, like, early high school junior high, you know, Hayley's mom is in it.
18:17
[SPEAKER_04]: Her dad was her music supervisor.
18:21
[SPEAKER_04]: There's so many little connections.
18:22
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like my son plays, you know, my son.
18:25
[SPEAKER_04]: It's really, it's really cool.
18:29
[SPEAKER_04]: And Jayme, Harvner,
18:31
[SPEAKER_04]: I remember Rick and I were like, whatever happens, Jamie has to be paid more than Rick and I.
18:37
[SPEAKER_04]: We took the minimum, but we were like, Jamie is so important to this movie, because he's not only choreographing everything.
18:44
[SPEAKER_04]: He has the connection with Lexington Dance Factory, which really helped us out with all the dancers and the moms and dads and the hanging out for a week.
18:54
[SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, without them, we wouldn't have been able to make the movie.
18:58
[SPEAKER_02]: But what a perfect time that we're having here in Kentucky with the tax incentives and the crews are starting to come in.
19:06
[SPEAKER_02]: What a perfect timing it is for you all to do this and to be able to pull it off.
19:11
[SPEAKER_02]: And it sounds like I see the film community here in Louisville, a lot.
19:15
[SPEAKER_02]: I've started incorporating a lot of filmmakers into my show, from the DPs and everybody else to get those stories.
19:20
[SPEAKER_02]: but but to hear about what else is going on in the state and over on your side I mean it sounds like you guys got a great community going on over there as well
19:29
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean, you know, the state is kind of one big state.
19:32
[SPEAKER_04]: We're all in it together, and yeah, I'm really proud of the fact that we shot this all here and that it potentially will get out there.
19:43
[SPEAKER_04]: People are going to see, you know, we shot, we shoot at Holly Hill in midway and we to Michael, the chef plays Weeda.
19:51
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, it's great to hear Ethan Hawks say like, if you would have told me that in 10 years we would be standing in the parking lot of mid, midways, trendiest restaurant in my I don't know if it's the trendiest don't interrupt me.
20:08
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, there's only, you know, there's not many restaurants in midway, but um, but that's really, it's really cool.
20:14
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm really proud of that and the world.
20:16
[SPEAKER_04]: And hopefully it gets, it's some traction and it's not just shot here.
20:22
[SPEAKER_04]: It's something shot here that's, that's, that's really good and, and people really like that would really cool.
20:29
[SPEAKER_02]: And you've got the production company and, and which is still sort of new, right?
20:33
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, this is, you guys are still,
20:34
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, no macaroni art productions and we've we've shot a few things.
20:39
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean we're we're tiny we're tiny with two employees
20:44
[SPEAKER_04]: And, but we shot, we shot, I think, you know, DocuSeries called You Belong Here.
20:50
[SPEAKER_04]: And it's all about weda, Michael.
20:53
[SPEAKER_04]: And, and it really features the state and food and ingredients and culture and art and it's beautiful.
21:01
[SPEAKER_04]: And we're, we're gonna be at ATX down Austin.
21:05
[SPEAKER_04]: We're gonna be in Dallas in Denver at a field festival.
21:09
[SPEAKER_04]: We've got some interest there, so that's a show that hopefully I'm someone snags up.
21:14
[SPEAKER_04]: We have nine episodes that we made.
21:16
[SPEAKER_04]: And then all that all features just little brilliant people in small towns and big towns and in Kentucky and we highlight Louisville big time.
21:27
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm really glad you ended up here.
21:29
[SPEAKER_02]: That's for sure.
21:31
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and all that.
21:33
[SPEAKER_02]: There's two parts of the movie I do want to quickly ask about more than the trivial side.
21:38
[SPEAKER_02]: the impressions of Jennifer Coolidge, it's like it's taken straight from real life if I was just guessing.
21:43
[SPEAKER_02]: That's
21:44
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, dude, we were just doing it on set.
21:47
[SPEAKER_03]: And then Rick was like, well, Kenzie and I were because we figured out we both can do it.
21:52
[SPEAKER_04]: Rick was like, he was such a great director.
21:55
[SPEAKER_04]: He's like, he's like, he's like, just do the lines, but don't do him like, we're just going to have fun.
21:59
[SPEAKER_04]: So just do an accent or whatever.
22:02
[SPEAKER_04]: It's just kind of a way that we, you know, knock on cobwebs of a scene.
22:07
[SPEAKER_04]: And they, so they did, just cool.
22:10
[SPEAKER_03]: And he's like, don't, we only did Jennifer Coolidge, like, we had no other option.
22:15
[SPEAKER_03]: But when we shot, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, hilarious.
22:21
[SPEAKER_03]: No, but when he was shooting white lotus fun fact, I, I was in college, but I was still doing my Jennifer Coolidge impression.
22:30
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and dad was like, you should send a video so I should show it to Jennifer and I was like, okay, so I like took a video and I was like, oh, I'm sick, but like, here's my impression like, hi, and then he showed it to her and she's like, wow, she really sounds like me and then she sent a video back doing an impression of me, he's like, hi, I'm sick, I'm Audrey, I'm sick, but I'm going to do my Jennifer college.
22:56
[SPEAKER_02]: What an incredibly surreal, you know, this life kind of a moment, right?
23:02
[SPEAKER_03]: It was so great, and I think she did such a bad thing for you.
23:07
[SPEAKER_03]: She's been hiding on my dream.
23:09
[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't say it because it go both ways as well.
23:14
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we never got in unless I missed it.
23:19
[SPEAKER_02]: We never get to hear the road trip playlist.
23:22
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the playlist is like it's a mystery.
23:28
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a mystery.
23:30
[SPEAKER_04]: I like it when Ethan's like I brought it and I'm brought in play this.
23:33
[SPEAKER_04]: He's at cool It's like yeah, and then I go.
23:35
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a bunch of songs.
23:36
[SPEAKER_04]: We just sing when she was young.
23:37
[SPEAKER_02]: Super cool Like all this is gonna go south
23:43
[SPEAKER_02]: I did.
23:44
[SPEAKER_02]: I kept waiting for I kept waiting for the kid was like eventually I want to hear what's on this plate and I'd never know.
23:49
[SPEAKER_02]: We actually did.
23:50
[SPEAKER_04]: We did a sneaky scene at the end if if somebody wanted us to show that like the end like a winner or something and it was us singing in the car and slow motion as it just kind of went past this
24:05
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, that we're going down the interstate, and you see us like singing at the windows down and and then in the back seat was the trophy sticking out of the back.
24:15
[SPEAKER_04]: trophy.
24:15
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we didn't want to use that, but, you know, I love the way you ended it, it was, right, it just.
24:22
[SPEAKER_02]: What you give the contestant number, just enough, where it was like, oh, God, I got a real, what number was she?
24:28
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that's the whole thing.
24:30
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
24:30
[SPEAKER_03]: You listen for it, you'll figure it out.
24:32
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
24:32
[SPEAKER_04]: It's really, it's, yeah, it's really cool.
24:35
[SPEAKER_04]: It's, I don't know, I really, I'm so proud of this movie.
24:40
[SPEAKER_04]: I really, you know, I know, you're supposed to say that.
24:46
[SPEAKER_04]: But honestly, I think it's really, really beautiful.
24:52
[SPEAKER_04]: and I love watching it.
24:53
[SPEAKER_04]: I love watching with people.
24:55
[SPEAKER_04]: I love being an audience and people reacting to the thing that we birth.
25:02
[SPEAKER_04]: It's fun and it's Rick and I last night at the Kentucky.
25:06
[SPEAKER_04]: We were sitting there just listening to people and then we go like, oh, we got him there.
25:10
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, we got him there.
25:11
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, they're gonna be, oh, we're gonna break their hearts.
25:14
[SPEAKER_04]: It's really fun.
25:15
[SPEAKER_04]: It's really fun to watch.
25:17
[SPEAKER_02]: it's a beautiful movie and and I do I hope this leads to a lot more of you guys working like this and putting this type of content out there.
25:24
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I feel like I've just, I was mentioned this earlier, but I just feel like I've had more conversations about independent film and it seems to be we're going into another era.
25:38
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that reminds me of the 90s and all that stuff.
25:40
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, those goldenaires have independent film.
25:42
[SPEAKER_02]: Like it feels like we're getting back to something like that.
25:44
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know.
25:45
[SPEAKER_04]: So I think the pendulum, it starts swinging back, right?
25:47
[SPEAKER_04]: And maybe we've gone so far that it has to come back now.
25:52
[SPEAKER_04]: And remember, when I was a kid, when I was a youngster, like my daughter here, you know, 38 movies made, made movies.
25:58
[SPEAKER_04]: Now there's four.
26:00
[SPEAKER_04]: So an independent film, like ours, is really hard, man, because the metrics that they used to measure, it's success.
26:07
[SPEAKER_04]: All right, it's almost like you, it's, you're set up to lose, like no, there's no support for our movie.
26:14
[SPEAKER_04]: We have to come on shows and talk about it and get people aware of it and tell them go, go sit in a theater and watch it.
26:21
[SPEAKER_04]: And that's really difficult nowadays, you know, but we're asking people to find it.
26:26
[SPEAKER_04]: And if you can't find it, call it, call it your local AMC shaders.
26:31
[SPEAKER_04]: And you
26:34
[SPEAKER_04]: But tonight, Friday, you know, we're, you know, I don't know when this plays, but we're on Wednesday.
26:40
[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah.
26:41
[SPEAKER_04]: So we'll be, you know, next weekend, hopefully it's in your city.
26:45
[SPEAKER_04]: And if it's not, you can find it some some way.
26:49
[SPEAKER_04]: But it's, yeah, we made an independent American cinematic film for families.
26:55
[SPEAKER_04]: That's what we did.
26:56
[SPEAKER_02]: and it's beautiful.
26:57
[SPEAKER_02]: It's such beautiful.
26:58
[SPEAKER_02]: So I do.
26:59
[SPEAKER_02]: I hope people go out and find this movie.
27:01
[SPEAKER_02]: And I know how hard it is.
27:02
[SPEAKER_02]: I know that work that you have to put in, you know, it's it's so hard to make the movie.
27:06
[SPEAKER_02]: And now it's then you have to spin off.
27:09
[SPEAKER_02]: It's people see the movie.
27:10
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
27:12
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
27:13
[SPEAKER_02]: But I find that, you know, these are the great stories that are coming out there again, and people are taking chances on less cliché, and I'm not even knocking the other stuff.
27:23
[SPEAKER_02]: No, because they're great moments like that.
27:24
[SPEAKER_02]: But these stories that you can't get away with for, you know, the big companies or whatever, and these beautiful things, and I'm just so grateful that I'm witnessing this right now and seeing something like she dances because it is.
27:35
[SPEAKER_02]: It's incredible what you've done.
27:37
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, cool.
27:38
[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.
27:38
[SPEAKER_04]: Thank you so much.
27:39
[SPEAKER_02]: And it's been a pleasure to talk to both of you all.
27:42
[SPEAKER_02]: And I hope we get to talk about more of these films and Audrey, I mean, this is leading to more.
27:46
[SPEAKER_02]: Are you ready to jump in the big pool?
27:49
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I have a show out actually on Apple right now.
27:53
[SPEAKER_03]: It's cool.
27:54
[SPEAKER_03]: Perfect women.
27:55
[SPEAKER_03]: So please watch.
27:56
[SPEAKER_02]: I've been seeing that.
27:57
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
27:59
[SPEAKER_02]: Congratulations.
27:59
[SPEAKER_02]: Sorry, I connected the dots yet.
28:01
[SPEAKER_03]: No, that's okay.
28:02
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, it's not great.
28:03
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
28:04
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm at the beginning, but it's really cool.
28:06
[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to go in good so far.
28:08
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's incredible.
28:09
[SPEAKER_02]: Congratulations on that.
28:10
[SPEAKER_02]: It congrats to you both on this movie too.
