- 0:12Hi friends. It is Good Friday.
- 0:16I'm Sean and well, I'm not so delighted today.
- 0:22I am grateful that you join me because this is the hardest
- 0:27reading for me to do reading the good fighter story.
- 0:32This is grueling, this is cruel. This is what Jesus does for us,
- 0:39because he loves us and there's our hearts sink and our head
- 0:45shake. And a shoulders slump.
- 0:47Hearing the terrible story. We will just hear of this
- 0:53incredible love. That the son of the god of the
- 0:59universe has for you, and for me and lives it out today.
- 1:10So we prepare our hearts holy spirit that you would transform
- 1:15us as we hear Luke's words, we hear the story of Jesus
- 1:22sacrifice for us. Friends.
- 1:28There's nothing left to do, but to read this together, Luke
- 1:34chapter 23 Then the entire Council took
- 1:48Jesus to pilate the Roman Governor.
- 1:51They began to State their case. This man has been leading our
- 1:55people astray by telling them, not to pay their taxes, to the
- 1:59Roman government. And by claiming he is the
- 2:01Messiah, a king. So pilate asked him.
- 2:06Are you the king of the Jews? Jesus replied.
- 2:11You have said it pilot turn to the leading priests and to the
- 2:16crowd and said, I find nothing wrong with this, man.
- 2:21Then they became insistent, but he is causing riots by teaching
- 2:25wherever he goes, all over Judea From Galilee to Jerusalem.
- 2:30Oh, he is a Galilean pilate asked when they said that he was
- 2:36pilot sent him to Herod Antipas because Galilee was under
- 2:40herod's jurisdiction. And Herod happened to be in
- 2:44Jerusalem at the time. Herod was delighted at the
- 2:47opportunity to see Jesus because he had heard about him and had
- 2:51been hoping for a long time to see him perform a miracle.
- 2:55He asked Jesus question after question, but Jesus refused to
- 3:00answer. Meanwhile, the leading priests
- 3:03and teachers of religious law stood there, shouting their
- 3:06accusations then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and
- 3:10ridiculing, Jesus. Finally, they put a royal robe
- 3:14on him and sent him back to pilate Herod and pilate had been
- 3:20enemies before became friends that day.
- 3:24Then pilate called together, the leading priests and other
- 3:27religious leaders along with the people.
- 3:30And he announced his verdict. You brought this man to me the
- 3:35cused him of leading a Revolt. I have examined him thoroughly
- 3:41on this point, in your presence and find him.
- 3:45Innocent Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to
- 3:51us. Nothing this man has done one
- 3:54calls for the death penalty. So I will have him flogged and
- 3:59then I will release him in a mighty Roar Rose from the crowd
- 4:06with one voice. They shouted, kill him and
- 4:10release Barabbas to us. Barabbas was in prison for
- 4:14taking part in an Insurrection in Jerusalem against the
- 4:17government and for murder pilot argued with them because he
- 4:22wanted to release Jesus. But they kept shouting crucify
- 4:26him crucify him For the third time.
- 4:30He demanded. Why?
- 4:33What crime has he committed? I have found.
- 4:36No reason to sentence him to death.
- 4:40So I will have him flogged and then I will release him.
- 4:45But the mob shouted, louder, and louder demanding, that Jesus be
- 4:49crucified and their voices prevailed.
- 4:54So, pilate sentenced Jesus to die as they demanded.
- 4:59As they had requested, he released Barabbas the man in
- 5:04prison for Insurrection and murder.
- 5:07But he turned Jesus over to them to do as they wished.
- 5:13As they LED Jesus away, a man named Simon who was from Cyrene
- 5:18happened to be coming in from the countryside, the soldiers
- 5:22seized him and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind
- 5:26Jesus. A large crowd trail behind
- 5:32including many grief-stricken women.
- 5:35But Jesus turned and said to them.
- 5:38Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me, but weep for
- 5:43yourselves and for your children, for the days are
- 5:47coming, when they will say fortunate, indeed other women
- 5:52who are childless the wombs that have not borne a child and the
- 5:57breasts that have never nursed, People will beg the mountains
- 6:02fall on us and plead with the hills bury us.
- 6:08For if these things are done, when the tree is green, what
- 6:12will happen when it is dry? Two others.
- 6:18Both criminals were LED out to be executed with him when they
- 6:22came to a place called the skull and nailed him to the cross.
- 6:28And the criminals were also crucified one on his right and
- 6:33one on his left. Jesus said father forgive them
- 6:40for they don't know what they are doing and the soldiers
- 6:44gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.
- 6:50The crowd watched in the latest scoffed, he saved others.
- 6:54They said let him save himself if he is really God's Messiah.
- 6:59The chosen one. The soldiers mocked him to pay
- 7:04offering him. A drink of sour wine, they
- 7:07called out to him. If you are the king of the Jews,
- 7:10save yourself. A sign was fast and above him
- 7:14with these words. This is the king of the Jews.
- 7:20One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, so you're
- 7:25the Messiah. Are you proved by Saving
- 7:28yourself on us too while you're at it?
- 7:31But the other criminal protested, don't you fear God
- 7:37even when you have been sentenced to die, we deserve to
- 7:41die for our crimes but this man hasn't done anything wrong.
- 7:47Then he said, Jesus Remember me when you come into your kingdom.
- 7:53And Jesus replied, I assure you today, you will be with me in
- 8:01Paradise. By this time it was about noon
- 8:08and a Darkness fell across the whole land.
- 8:11Until three o'clock the light from the sun was gone and
- 8:16suddenly the curtain in the sanctuary of the temple was torn
- 8:20down the middle. Then Jesus shouted, father.
- 8:25I entrust my spirit into your hands. and with those words, he
- 8:32breathed his last when the Roman officer overseeing the execution
- 8:39saw what had happened, he worshipped God and said, surely
- 8:44this man was innocent And when all the crowd that came to see
- 8:50the crucifixion saw what had happened?
- 8:52They went home and deep sorrow. But Jesus friends, including the
- 8:58women who had followed him From Galilee stood at a distance
- 9:02watching. Now, there was a good and
- 9:06righteous man named Joseph. He was a member of the Jewish
- 9:10High Council, that he had not agreed with the decision and
- 9:14actions of the other religious leaders.
- 9:17He was from the town of Arimathea in Judea and he was
- 9:21waiting for the kingdom of God to come.
- 9:24He went to pilate and asked for Jesus body.
- 9:28Then he took the body down from the cross and wrapped it in a
- 9:32long sheet of linen cloth, and laid it in a new Tomb that had
- 9:37been carved out of Rock. This was done late on Friday
- 9:42afternoon, the day of preparation as Sabbath was about
- 9:46to begin. As his body was taken away for
- 9:51women From Galilee, followed and saw the tumor.
- 9:55His body was placed. Then they went home and prepared
- 9:59spices and ointments to anoint his body.
- 10:04But by the time they were finished, the Sabbath had begun.
- 10:09So they rested as required by the law.
- 10:27Jesus. We have no words.
- 10:32All we have is Hearts filled with sorrow. and with deep
- 10:38gratitude, And with love. Thank you for everything you do
- 10:48for us. And for loving us so much more
- 10:53than our minds can possibly fathom.
- 10:58You are good. And we just love you and are so
- 11:08thankful for you. And today, our prayer continues
- 11:17in your presence as we reflect on what you have done for us.
- 11:23So, we sit here and now in your presence and we adore you.
