- 0:02Speaker 1: you by our crafty cocktail partners in good old Utah
- 0:06Speaker 1: County clear Water Distilling. New bottle designs continue to roll
- 0:10Speaker 1: out right now. They're flavorful vodka. Check it out at
- 0:14Speaker 1: your nearest state liquor store or the clear Water Distillery
- 0:17Speaker 1: store in Pleasant Grove.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Drains of the feel all right Field Town under the weather.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Feel well here.
- 0:30Speaker 4: He is the barbarian of the Wine Academy of Utah,
- 0:36Speaker 4: Jimmy Santangelo Wine Academy of Utah dot com. Jimmy is
- 0:41Speaker 4: wearing a tracksuit today that you should go to X
- 0:44Speaker 4: ninety six dot com slash live and see. And so
- 0:48Speaker 4: he and Nick like two little schoolboys who little coordinated
- 0:52Speaker 4: their outfits.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yellow. Yeah you doing Nick?
- 0:57Speaker 1: Look, I know, I know I'm coming hot right back
- 1:01Speaker 1: at with the tracksuit. But when a man with the
- 1:03Speaker 1: last name Santangelo says he wants to wear a tracksuit
- 1:06Speaker 1: with you, That's all I've been thinking about. Here's that
- 1:10Speaker 1: tracksuit And what.
- 1:12Speaker 5: Better way to celebrate are is with svaka this morning
- 1:16Speaker 5: by Clearwater clear Water Distilling out in Utah County. What
- 1:20Speaker 5: this vodka distilled spirit you can use a variety of grains.
- 1:24Speaker 5: You can use corn, rye, barley, wheat. These guys are
- 1:27Speaker 5: you potatoes? You can use grapes, pretty much any formidable base.
- 1:32Speaker 5: And this is ninety corn. And you might be like, Okay,
- 1:36Speaker 5: what's a big deal there. Well, corn is a bit
- 1:38Speaker 5: more viscous, it's a bit weightier, cleaner, and it does
- 1:42Speaker 5: got a little snapier of a slight sweet finish on
- 1:46Speaker 5: the end. What they do that differentiates they being clearwater,
- 1:51Speaker 5: differentiates themselves from others is they do a filtration. They
- 1:55Speaker 5: filter this stuff out four times, three times, and so
- 1:59Speaker 5: it's a triple filtration, making it even smoother. And then
- 2:04Speaker 5: they're bringing it down to proof, uh, with the beautiful
- 2:08Speaker 5: water out there in Utah from it's.
- 2:11Speaker 3: A lovely vodkas.
- 2:12Speaker 4: I don't usually like straight vodka at all, but we're
- 2:15Speaker 4: just sampling it a little bit without any mix.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah it's good.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I'm just gonna have the exact same sentiment. Vodka is
- 2:21Speaker 1: my least favorite thing to drink on its own, and
- 2:24Speaker 1: this is fantastic.
- 2:25Speaker 5: It's nice and smooth, isn't it. Yeah, it's smooth than
- 2:28Speaker 5: you might expect with vodka. It's going to make a
- 2:31Speaker 5: great martini. We're featuring it today with a little bit
- 2:35Speaker 5: of fever tree blood orange ginger beer.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Want me to wet that up a little.
- 2:39Speaker 5: Bit for you, the empting dehydrated on you double remember
- 2:49Speaker 5: the Yeah, that ginger beer really has a bit of
- 2:52Speaker 5: a kick. Frankly, ye and it's nice.
- 2:54Speaker 2: So yeah, that's right, thank you. Sorry.
- 3:01Speaker 5: But the new package design, I think I showed it
- 3:04Speaker 5: up on my camera. They got this beautiful back label
- 3:07Speaker 5: that reverberates just the beautiful colors of the mountains, the
- 3:11Speaker 5: color you know this if you're gonna have anything from Utah, man,
- 3:14Speaker 5: this really represents in its packaging.
- 3:17Speaker 2: They've been doing a really great job with that for sure.
- 3:19Speaker 3: And again available at the Stage store.
- 3:22Speaker 5: They all at the State Store or at their location
- 3:24Speaker 5: over there in Pleasant Grove. They are open seven days
- 3:29Speaker 5: a week. So if you're like, oh no, I don't
- 3:32Speaker 5: have anything, it's a Sunday and that people are coming over,
- 3:35Speaker 5: you do have a package store that's available for you
- 3:38Speaker 5: to purchase products that they make.
- 3:39Speaker 4: So that's a twenty buck bottle of vodka. I think
- 3:42Speaker 4: the bottle itself is worth twenty dollars.
- 3:44Speaker 2: It's a sharp package. I mean it's really nice, No,
- 3:47Speaker 2: for sure.
- 3:48Speaker 6: Texture saying I'm going to my first whiskey tasting at
- 3:50Speaker 6: clear Water tonight.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Nice.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Yeah, they do a good job. They have a beautiful
- 3:54Speaker 5: tasting room there. It's all in set in like the
- 4:01Speaker 5: twenties thirties, you know, and they do a really good
- 4:03Speaker 5: job with the design.
- 4:06Speaker 2: The tasting's fantastic. You get a chance.
- 4:08Speaker 5: And you get it to walk through the distillery with
- 4:12Speaker 5: a brief tour, and you can have a tour there anytime.
- 4:17Speaker 5: You can schedule one. You can pop in for a tasting.
- 4:20Speaker 5: And then of course they have not only the package
- 4:22Speaker 5: room for their alcohol, but they got mixers, They've got
- 4:27Speaker 5: I'm here on holiday and I don't have a cocktail
- 4:31Speaker 5: shaker or something like that, bidders, things of that nature.
- 4:34Speaker 2: So they're really full the full deal.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Well that's that tour, by the way, that's you know,
- 4:41Speaker 4: boy Scout Troops, Girl Scout sho.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Church groups. This vodka one an award right, Yeah.
- 4:49Speaker 5: In twenty twenty four last year in San Francisco, the
- 4:52Speaker 5: golden medal winner at the San Francisco International Spirits Award,
- 4:57Speaker 5: which is in particular it's kind of difficult you win that.
- 5:00Speaker 5: It's a lot of competition. So these guys placed quite well.
- 5:04Speaker 4: And what now, why have you written here? Unless I
- 5:07Speaker 4: missed it? Soda water and expression of lemon.
- 5:09Speaker 2: That's what I initially wanted to do.
- 5:11Speaker 5: And I thought with the ginger beer coming up, and
- 5:15Speaker 5: people always like a moscow mule or something like that,
- 5:19Speaker 5: and I was thinking, so I went in just to
- 5:21Speaker 5: get ginger beer. But then I saw the blood orange
- 5:24Speaker 5: ginger beer, so it kind of got amped up from there.
- 5:27Speaker 5: But we've had this, I've had this vodka with soda water,
- 5:32Speaker 5: simple expression of lemon. And you always want to just
- 5:35Speaker 5: use a Collins glass for that, not like a small
- 5:37Speaker 5: Rocks glass, but a tall, narrow glass. Whenever you use
- 5:40Speaker 5: carbonated beverages, you want it to be tall and narrow.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Think of a champagne flute. You know, they used to
- 5:45Speaker 2: be in the champagne.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Coops like the bird bath looking cocktail glass, but all
- 5:49Speaker 5: the bubbles would dissipate up, So that's why it's tall
- 5:53Speaker 5: and narrow.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Same principle with cocktails.
- 5:55Speaker 4: And you know, you know the story about the champagne coop. Yeah,
- 5:59Speaker 4: tell the open glass there's supposedly was direct Marie Antoinette's
- 6:04Speaker 4: breast size.
- 6:05Speaker 2: That's right, the coop, not the tulip, not the flute.
- 6:09Speaker 4: That would be kind of that would be like that
- 6:11Speaker 4: would be sort of not that cold in that would
- 6:13Speaker 4: be a deformity.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:17Speaker 4: So so this is clear Water Distilling. Lucky to have them.
- 6:21Speaker 4: You have a really a wide array of products now.
- 6:24Speaker 5: Now absolutely they're doing a great job, new packaging, design.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Of the feel all right, feel the weather.
- 6:37Speaker 4: In the feel well. Listen, nobody's calling with questions for Jimmy.
- 6:41Speaker 4: But uh, Jimmy Santangelo. He knows all about wine and
- 6:44Speaker 4: spirits and restaurants and uh what kind of wine to
- 6:48Speaker 4: drink for Easter and all of that stuff.
- 6:51Speaker 3: We got to don't yet, we got a we got
- 6:55Speaker 3: a few questions.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Be a text here.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Okay, all right Tasha from Plain City.
- 6:59Speaker 6: Please, Jimmy, if I wanted to start collecting wine, how
- 7:04Speaker 6: do you know which wines are equitable?
- 7:07Speaker 2: Ah?
- 7:07Speaker 5: So maybe return on your investment or that will increase
- 7:11Speaker 5: with value as they age. There are a couple of
- 7:16Speaker 5: sources that you can refer to online of you know,
- 7:20Speaker 5: take a look at your points. Anything that a high point.
- 7:23Speaker 5: But what this is what you need and this is
- 7:25Speaker 5: what I want to get out is if you're gonna
- 7:27Speaker 5: purchase wine and you want to lay them down to age,
- 7:31Speaker 5: put the wine bottle on its side. Make sure the
- 7:33Speaker 5: wine bottle it's gonna need to have a cork. You
- 7:37Speaker 5: want to corked wine, and you want to keep that
- 7:39Speaker 5: wine in contact with the cork so that cork swells
- 7:42Speaker 5: and keeps that wine agent for a very long time.
- 7:45Speaker 5: If you have bottles out there that you're aging, that
- 7:48Speaker 5: you keep straight up. Well, now you have a head gap.
- 7:51Speaker 5: The cork's going to dry and more air is going
- 7:53Speaker 5: to float in there. It's not gonna be like it's breezy,
- 7:56Speaker 5: but enough that that wine will age much sooner, degrade
- 8:01Speaker 5: and things of that nature.
- 8:02Speaker 4: And when you have it so it's pointing down on
- 8:06Speaker 4: its side, or even pointing down a bit, Yeah, then
- 8:08Speaker 4: aren't you supposed to rotate the bottle?
- 8:10Speaker 2: That's right.
- 8:10Speaker 5: So everytime you do the you know, to change the
- 8:14Speaker 5: clock or you know the different seasons daylight saving time
- 8:18Speaker 5: or whatever, or just put on a calendar about quarterly
- 8:21Speaker 5: or twice a year. And we do see a lot
- 8:25Speaker 5: of wine trays that are becoming less vertical, and that's easy.
- 8:30Speaker 2: When you pull.
- 8:31Speaker 5: The tray out, this is like in a Eurocavo refrigerator
- 8:34Speaker 5: or something. What I like to do is just angle
- 8:36Speaker 5: it up just a little bit because gravity's strong. Gravity
- 8:40Speaker 5: will pull on that wine through the cork. But in
- 8:43Speaker 5: terms of equitable look at Bordeaux futures, you can do Bordeaux,
- 8:48Speaker 5: a lot of California high end wines, things like that.
- 8:53Speaker 5: But it sounds like a great hobby that you have.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Do people get into that as kind of a hobby
- 8:58Speaker 4: and maybe make a little money that they want to.
- 9:01Speaker 5: They do, and we have and forgive me, I don't
- 9:04Speaker 5: remember the gentleman's name I just reached out to.
- 9:06Speaker 2: We have an appointment next week.
- 9:07Speaker 5: There's a brand new facility up in Park City for
- 9:10Speaker 5: wine storage.
- 9:11Speaker 2: It's really yeah. I want to go up.
- 9:13Speaker 5: There and do a little interview with them and do
- 9:15Speaker 5: a little walk through with them and check out the space.
- 9:18Speaker 2: But we do have a lot of people that live here.
- 9:20Speaker 5: From you know, draper Lehigh all the way up of
- 9:23Speaker 5: course the Deer Valley, Park City and everywhere in between
- 9:26Speaker 5: that they may be moving here to our community. They
- 9:29Speaker 5: have a huge or large cellar and maybe it's just
- 9:32Speaker 5: for a temporary period of time. Maybe they have their
- 9:35Speaker 5: wine here in Deer Valley. But they're only in the
- 9:37Speaker 5: house for three months out of the year and they
- 9:39Speaker 5: don't want to keep everything. I knocking key, they can
- 9:42Speaker 5: throw it over to this facility.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 9:45Speaker 6: Here's another text question. Now this is this is an
- 9:48Speaker 6: odd one. I've never heard this before. I use vodka
- 9:52Speaker 6: in place of starch for ironing my quilting projects. What
- 9:57Speaker 6: is the starchiest vodka on a budget?
- 10:00Speaker 2: So, I would think potato, a potato based.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Like Idaho brand Nature.
- 10:08Speaker 3: I think there is one.
- 10:09Speaker 5: No, yeah, you would that'll have you know all the
- 10:13Speaker 5: there's not going to be any more carbohydrate left in
- 10:16Speaker 5: the product. But so playfully, I think it would be
- 10:19Speaker 5: a potato I would start there. But yeah, I've heard
- 10:23Speaker 5: that before. You know you uh you do? A little missed.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Is the thing. I have heard of this as well.
- 10:31Speaker 3: I've not heard of it.
- 10:31Speaker 4: When you're doing your ironing instead of water use but Bill,
- 10:35Speaker 4: you're supposed to not sprayed in your mouth.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Iron my clothes.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Are a spray for the shirt collar and a spray
- 10:43Speaker 3: for my mouth.
- 10:44Speaker 6: One for me, I'm making lamb on Sunday. Wanted to
- 10:47Speaker 6: ask Jimmy what red wine I should use to make
- 10:50Speaker 6: a red wine sauce.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Oh, the same wine that you'll drink with the dish
- 10:55Speaker 5: coke Drone red is excellent. It's a blend of Siah grenache,
- 10:59Speaker 5: things like that. If you want to get we also
- 11:02Speaker 5: call those gsms. If you were to get a GSM
- 11:06Speaker 5: Grana seramavedor out of Australia, nah, you're gonna get a
- 11:09Speaker 5: little new oak in there and you really want the
- 11:11Speaker 5: lamb to come out. So I was like recommending Southern Rhone.
- 11:17Speaker 5: Really great balance the wine. It is a little higher
- 11:20Speaker 5: in alcohol about fourteen two fourteen five. Wine's on average
- 11:24Speaker 5: at thirteen point five. So that's my go to red
- 11:28Speaker 5: with lamb for sure.
- 11:30Speaker 6: I bought a bottle of non alcoholic grape drink made
- 11:33Speaker 6: in Italy and sold at Costco, and they still id'd me.
- 11:38Speaker 6: Why do they card non alcoholic beer and wine?
- 11:41Speaker 3: I've seen this.
- 11:42Speaker 2: They do.
- 11:42Speaker 5: Yeah, they even here at Harmon's or Smith's or something
- 11:47Speaker 5: like that. It's just one more layer of control they
- 11:54Speaker 5: you don't. And the interesting thing is I asked when
- 11:58Speaker 5: I purchase some athletic brewing beer, and it was with
- 12:03Speaker 5: my son. I showed my idea it was non alcoholic beer,
- 12:07Speaker 5: and I said, do I have to be over twenty
- 12:08Speaker 5: one to buy this, And this was like in a
- 12:11Speaker 5: self checkout and the gal didn't know. She's like, oh,
- 12:14Speaker 5: I don't know, we just required ID. I think you
- 12:17Speaker 5: do have to be over twenty so maybe yeah, and
- 12:19Speaker 5: I should know. So I'm gonna find out.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Well, do they get.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Complete rid of the alcohol content or just does it
- 12:25Speaker 1: get to such low love.
- 12:26Speaker 2: That's a good question.
- 12:27Speaker 5: It's like a point oh five of a percent, so
- 12:29Speaker 5: perhaps that's but you can buy Bitterers without being id
- 12:32Speaker 5: and it's got trace amounts of alcohol.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Some places put the listine. They won't put the listerine
- 12:38Speaker 4: out out on the shelves because people come in and
- 12:42Speaker 4: steal it and drink it.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Yeah, because there is alcohol in it, you know. Let's
- 12:47Speaker 3: see here we go. Jimmy, I've gotten into bourbons the
- 12:50Speaker 3: last few years. Well, who hasn't.
- 12:52Speaker 6: I want I want to try infusing it with something
- 12:56Speaker 6: any recommendation.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, because I do that with vodka right right?
- 13:01Speaker 5: And when you infuse Carrie, do you put it right
- 13:04Speaker 5: in the bottle like in the in the bottle.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Is like with vodka.
- 13:08Speaker 6: I'll cut up fruit usually pineapple, nice and put it
- 13:11Speaker 6: in a jar.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Right, and then you transfer it into the So I'm
- 13:15Speaker 2: glad you do that.
- 13:16Speaker 5: So you get a mason jar with that self closed lid,
- 13:20Speaker 5: you know, the rubber gasket, so it's a really nice
- 13:22Speaker 5: tight fit.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Or you can I guess you can get the screw top.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I just like those big hinges, because.
- 13:26Speaker 5: They're using a lot the answer mint, do a little mint,
- 13:31Speaker 5: and do a little mint in there.
- 13:33Speaker 2: You can also do maybe a citrus.
- 13:36Speaker 5: So with bourbon, it's already rich, it's already vanilla, it's
- 13:40Speaker 5: already CARAMELI So by adding an extract or acid such
- 13:46Speaker 5: as peels of grapefruit or grapefruit segments, or tangerine. You
- 13:52Speaker 5: got some tangerine, so that orange angle. So but I
- 13:56Speaker 5: would love to do a little mint in there.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Uh uh.
- 14:01Speaker 5: And it really just gives it this heightened, this higher tone.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Note.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Now I read a really interesting little article yesterday, Jim
- 14:09Speaker 4: and I think we've talked about this before. Says my
- 14:12Speaker 4: grandmother ate seven or nine golden raisins soaked in gin
- 14:17Speaker 4: every day before she went to bed, and she said
- 14:20Speaker 4: that's kept the arthritis away. And the way the way
- 14:23Speaker 4: they the way they said they did, so it's got
- 14:25Speaker 4: to be golden raisins, the sultanas, and you put them
- 14:29Speaker 4: in a your jar. You cover them with gin and
- 14:32Speaker 4: put a piece of cheese cloth over it and let
- 14:35Speaker 4: the gin kind of evaporate out so that so that
- 14:38Speaker 4: they just it soaks into the.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Raisins and then you eat seven marinate them.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah. No, my nana did that. She did that. Yeah.
- 14:45Speaker 5: Well she had a little medicine old medicine container.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Filled it with uh, filled it with.
- 14:52Speaker 5: The golden raisins, the California white raisins, golden raisins.
- 14:56Speaker 3: So yeah, so you got event coming up tomorrow?
- 14:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I got an eventmorrow. I'll make it quick.
- 15:00Speaker 5: Saturday at three pm Literary Libations at Ken Sanders Where Books,
- 15:04Speaker 5: featuring a deep dive discussion of Wendell Barry. You'll receive
- 15:08Speaker 5: a sparkling whine upon arrival, charcooterie and beverage paired with.
- 15:11Speaker 2: The works of When. Where do you buy a ticket?
- 15:13Speaker 5: Go right to White Academy Utah dot com or go
- 15:16Speaker 5: to sen Ken Sanders Books.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Wine Academy of Utah dot com.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Thank you, Thanks everybody here.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Don't get out of here. I'm going to get a
- 15:23Speaker 3: picture with my tracksuit. You got it.
