- 0:42Speaker 1: Andrew, welcome in.
- 0:43Speaker 3: How you doing today, Josh, I'm doing great, man, Great
- 0:46Speaker 3: to be with you.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I'm glad to have you on, and Andrew.
- 0:48Speaker 2: It's not every day recently we've actually had good news
- 0:52Speaker 2: to talk about.
- 0:52Speaker 1: But for the Eagles there is good news.
- 0:55Speaker 2: One of is not the most important players on their offense,
- 0:59Speaker 2: has ance These returning. Lane Johnson confirmed on his own
- 1:03Speaker 2: social media previous reports earlier today that he will be
- 1:06Speaker 2: back for the twenty twenty six season. Just kind of
- 1:10Speaker 2: give your initial thoughts on Lane Johnson returning for next
- 1:14Speaker 2: season and what the weight of that means for the Eagles.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Well, first of all, it's enormous, but it would have
- 1:21Speaker 3: been tough to envision life without Lane Johnson. That would
- 1:24Speaker 3: have been very difficult to fathom, especially when you look
- 1:27Speaker 3: at how it ended for him, right missing the final
- 1:30Speaker 3: eight regular season games with the Lisz Frank sprain and
- 1:33Speaker 3: then of course the postseason game. This gives him the
- 1:36Speaker 3: opportunity to leave the game on his own terms. He's
- 1:38Speaker 3: still playing at the height. He's still at the height
- 1:41Speaker 3: of his game right, so there's no drop off in production.
- 1:45Speaker 3: He'll be thirty six years old in May. But if
- 1:47Speaker 3: you're someone like Sean Mannion and you're a first year
- 1:50Speaker 3: offensive coordator trying to get things rowing and reimagine this offense,
- 1:55Speaker 3: well you check off a major box by getting Lane
- 1:58Speaker 3: Johnson back in the fold. And his resume speaks for itself.
- 2:02Speaker 3: He's one of the greatest right tackles to play the game.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Six time Pro Bowler, five time All Pro, and the
- 2:10Speaker 3: Eagles are going to greatly benefit from his presence. I
- 2:12Speaker 3: thought Fred Johnson did a nice job stepping in, but
- 2:15Speaker 3: the Eagles sorely miss Lane Johnson and they're going to
- 2:17Speaker 3: have him for twenty twenty six.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And your nundre percent of right, this is not a
- 2:21Speaker 2: Fred Johnson stink. This is more of a Lane Johnson
- 2:25Speaker 2: is a future Hall of Famer, and even at thirty
- 2:28Speaker 2: six years old, he's probably still better than what ninety
- 2:31Speaker 2: percent of the league's tackles, and having him out there
- 2:35Speaker 2: is definitely going to be a benefit, not just as
- 2:38Speaker 2: you mentioned for the offense, but Sean mannin a first
- 2:42Speaker 2: time offensive play caller at former quarterback himself. I can
- 2:46Speaker 2: only imagine for him the relief that he is feeling today.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely, when you're trying to install an offense, it
- 2:56Speaker 3: certainly helps to have an all pro right tackle there
- 3:00Speaker 3: to really help, I guess get everything on the same page.
- 3:05Speaker 3: He's gonna pair with Jordan Malatta and you have Cam Jurgens.
- 3:08Speaker 3: I'm sure we'll talk about Landon Dickerson, Tyler Stein, So
- 3:11Speaker 3: there's continuity there, and Lane Johnson certainly fits what we're
- 3:15Speaker 3: all expecting the Eagles to look to implement this season
- 3:19Speaker 3: in terms of the run game, we have no way
- 3:21Speaker 3: of knowing, because we still have to let things play out.
- 3:24Speaker 3: But when you're talking about the outside zone stretch plays,
- 3:28Speaker 3: Lane Johnson is athletic as they come, and that would
- 3:32Speaker 3: really seem to favor what he's able to do in
- 3:34Speaker 3: terms of his skill sets. So it's great news for
- 3:37Speaker 3: the Eagles, needless to say. And I wrote about this
- 3:40Speaker 3: on Inside the Birds dot com. If you're listen close enough,
- 3:43Speaker 3: you could probably hear a collective cybe of relief across
- 3:46Speaker 3: the Delaware Valley and beyond.
- 3:48Speaker 2: So now let's talk about the rest of the other
- 3:50Speaker 2: line you mentioned about the news about Landon Dickerson. Derek
- 3:52Speaker 2: gotn of course, people can catch him on the Inside
- 3:55Speaker 2: of the Birds podcasting platform as well throughout the football season.
- 3:58Speaker 2: He reported that land and dick Dickerson he will return
- 4:02Speaker 2: as well despite all the injuries. And Dickerson a very
- 4:05Speaker 2: different conversation Andrew, because while Lane Johnson is thirty six
- 4:09Speaker 2: years old, Dickerson is ten years younger and his situation
- 4:13Speaker 2: was numerous knee surgeries in college, more injuries in the NFL.
- 4:18Speaker 2: So for him it was very much more a health
- 4:22Speaker 2: over anything else situation. So what does it say to you, Andrew,
- 4:25Speaker 2: that Dickerson is saying, you know what, I believe I
- 4:29Speaker 2: can still do this at a high enough level that
- 4:31Speaker 2: I am happy with.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, his litany of injuries has been well documented
- 4:36Speaker 3: and one thing that I always push back on. Whenever
- 4:39Speaker 3: the conversation came up in this early part of the
- 4:42Speaker 3: offseason about Lannon Dickerson, you would hear some that would say,
- 4:46Speaker 3: how can he walk away from the game. He's too young?
- 4:48Speaker 3: You know, well, you don't know what someone else is
- 4:51Speaker 3: dealing with. You don't know the amount of pain that
- 4:54Speaker 3: he had to I guess put aside because he was
- 4:59Speaker 3: clearly going through it last season, And you have to
- 5:01Speaker 3: ultimately think, if you're Lannon Dickerson, can I go through
- 5:05Speaker 3: another season doing this? Am I going to be able?
- 5:09Speaker 3: Is it going to affect my quality of life after
- 5:12Speaker 3: I'm done playing the game? And so sometimes you need
- 5:15Speaker 3: the offseason to unplug a little bit and recharge, and
- 5:19Speaker 3: it gives you a different perspective. I certainly think the
- 5:21Speaker 3: fact that Lane Johnson's coming back and you gain another
- 5:25Speaker 3: chance to play with your brother out there, it certainly helps,
- 5:28Speaker 3: but obviously Landon believes that he can step in there
- 5:32Speaker 3: and be the player that he's been throughout his career.
- 5:34Speaker 3: SAMs last season and he's even still he was better
- 5:38Speaker 3: than a lot of the guards in the NFL despite
- 5:40Speaker 3: the injuries that he was working through, whether it was
- 5:42Speaker 3: the ankle, the knee, the back, and others. I think
- 5:46Speaker 3: that he's telling you by coming back that he believes
- 5:49Speaker 3: that he can be an asset and pick things up
- 5:52Speaker 3: where he left off. And this is going to be
- 5:53Speaker 3: a huge offseason for him to really rest the body,
- 5:56Speaker 3: recover and get back after it. But again we talk
- 5:59Speaker 3: about Howane Johnson's at the top of his game, Landon
- 6:02Speaker 3: Dickerson when he's at full strength is among the NFL's
- 6:05Speaker 3: best guards. So that's a huge addition for the Eagles
- 6:08Speaker 3: as well.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and you could argue he's the second most important
- 6:11Speaker 2: alignment on this team because of all the things he
- 6:14Speaker 2: can do from that position, which kind of leads us
- 6:17Speaker 2: to the balance of the old line. So now we
- 6:21Speaker 2: know you're getting the two guys, Lane and Landon coming back,
- 6:25Speaker 2: arguably the two most important guys.
- 6:28Speaker 1: So let's go one by one.
- 6:29Speaker 2: What is the impact now of Lane Johnson and Lynn
- 6:34Speaker 2: Dickerson coming back on Cam Jurgens.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I think that that's certainly going to help.
- 6:42Speaker 3: We have to wait and see what happens with Cam Jurgens.
- 6:45Speaker 3: You saw that he was in medeen to get some
- 6:48Speaker 3: you know whatever, they were, those shots for his back.
- 6:51Speaker 3: That's obviously concerning. Because the season's over and the back
- 6:54Speaker 3: surgery was a year ago and it does take some
- 6:58Speaker 3: time to recover from it. That would suggest to me
- 7:02Speaker 3: that he still isn't feeling quite right and he's trying
- 7:05Speaker 3: to exhaust options to make sure that he's going to
- 7:07Speaker 3: return at optimum levels. But I think having the surrounding
- 7:11Speaker 3: talent that they have, if you can get Cam Jurgens
- 7:14Speaker 3: back to even a semblance of what he was in
- 7:17Speaker 3: twenty twenty four before he got hurt late in that season,
- 7:21Speaker 3: I mean, I think the Eagles are going to greatly
- 7:22Speaker 3: benefit from that. They had the NFL's best, that was
- 7:25Speaker 3: a historically good offensive line in twenty twenty four, and
- 7:28Speaker 3: they may not be quite that in twenty twenty six.
- 7:31Speaker 3: But having that continuity in those pieces in place not
- 7:34Speaker 3: always going to benefit the offense, but also Sean Mannion,
- 7:37Speaker 3: as I mentioned as he looks to mold the offense
- 7:40Speaker 3: in his vision.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Tyler Steen was not bad last year, but he was
- 7:45Speaker 2: not on the same level as some Eagles guards of
- 7:48Speaker 2: past year. Should he continue you look at him? Is
- 7:52Speaker 2: he like cemented as the right guard or should Philadelphia
- 7:57Speaker 2: maybe at least look into the idea of finding another
- 8:00Speaker 2: right guard?
- 8:01Speaker 3: Yeah? I don't know that he's cemented as the right
- 8:04Speaker 3: guard of the future. The Eagles could also draft a
- 8:08Speaker 3: tackle in this draft, and obviously, when you have Jordanillot
- 8:11Speaker 3: and Lane Johnson there, that tackle wouldn't have a spot.
- 8:15Speaker 3: But if they can offer guard versatility, well I would
- 8:18Speaker 3: imagine that there'll be a little bit of a competition
- 8:20Speaker 3: there if they're able to make that work and if
- 8:22Speaker 3: that rookie is up to speed or trusted enough to
- 8:27Speaker 3: take on a pretty prominent role. But I don't believe
- 8:31Speaker 3: that Tyler Steen was as big of an issue as
- 8:33Speaker 3: some are making it out to be, or some have
- 8:35Speaker 3: made it out to be. I don't think he was great.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I think he was fine. I also think that this
- 8:40Speaker 3: expected style in terms of the running game would lend
- 8:45Speaker 3: itself a little bit more favorably to Tyler Stein, who's
- 8:47Speaker 3: pretty good in space can climb of that second level.
- 8:50Speaker 3: And before anyone even says that I know Makai Becton
- 8:55Speaker 3: is released from the Chargers, no, because I don't. I
- 9:00Speaker 3: honestly don't think that he was a trop off, that
- 9:03Speaker 3: he was that much of an upgrade over Tyler Steen.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Different style of player, and certainly I don't think that
- 9:09Speaker 3: he would fit the mold of what the Eagles are
- 9:11Speaker 3: projected to do with Sean Mannion. And let's not forget, yes,
- 9:14Speaker 3: he thrived here in Philadelphia, but that was under Jeff Stoutlin.
- 9:18Speaker 3: That was one of Jeff Stalin's reclamation projects. That's not
- 9:21Speaker 3: to say that he would experience the same amount of
- 9:24Speaker 3: success if he were to come back a second time.
- 9:26Speaker 3: So I'm gonna go ahead and say to you know,
- 9:29Speaker 3: take a line from my guy John mcmow and hashtag no, I.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Mean that know you gave was on par with some
- 9:35Speaker 2: of those Vic Dangio press conference's last year in New
- 9:38Speaker 2: where he would just shut down the question and move
- 9:40Speaker 2: on to the next person.
- 9:42Speaker 1: That was great, shutting down much trouble.
- 9:44Speaker 3: By the way, with the Charger, he struggled greatly. So
- 9:46Speaker 3: he did, and that for several reasons, No, Yeah.
- 9:49Speaker 2: And by the way, I forget he didn't just struggle Andrew.
- 9:52Speaker 2: He then also complained about the struggles he was having,
- 9:56Speaker 2: so he didn't exactly handle it very well either to
- 9:59Speaker 2: Beckon lalast year with the Chargers into the Checko joining
- 10:02Speaker 2: US year for Football and four powered by the Inside
- 10:04Speaker 2: the Birds podcasts Inside the Birds dot Com. You mentioned
- 10:08Speaker 2: about the style of this offense with Sean Mannion. How
- 10:12Speaker 2: does that impact the offensive line? Because I think it's
- 10:15Speaker 2: not just the changing of the O line coach right Andrew,
- 10:18Speaker 2: it's also the big picture of what this style of
- 10:22Speaker 2: offense is going to ask of the offensive line.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's always risky to project, but all we really
- 10:29Speaker 3: have to go off of is the influences that Sean
- 10:31Speaker 3: Mannion's coming to Philadelphia with. And I kind of look
- 10:35Speaker 3: at it through the lens of more of the Kyle
- 10:38Speaker 3: Shanahan Sean McVay style, where you're asking your linemen to
- 10:41Speaker 3: play a little bit more horizontal rather than attacking full
- 10:46Speaker 3: head esteem vertically like they've done under Jeff Stoutlin, which
- 10:49Speaker 3: is going to require athleticism. It's going to require a
- 10:52Speaker 3: running back who needs to be patient and allow his
- 10:54Speaker 3: blocks to develop. Which for all the great things at
- 10:58Speaker 3: Sakwon BARKI doesn't know that patience is one of the
- 11:02Speaker 3: qualities that he carries As a running back. He's more
- 11:04Speaker 3: of a seat and go and I think that the
- 11:06Speaker 3: old style that they had implemented under Jeff Stotlin really
- 11:10Speaker 3: catered to his strengths. But you're going to need a
- 11:12Speaker 3: little bit more athleticism from your lineman, and they have
- 11:15Speaker 3: to have the range and the fluidity to be able
- 11:18Speaker 3: to maneuver in space. So it's when you look at
- 11:20Speaker 3: the offensive line right now, Landon Dickerson, We've talked a
- 11:23Speaker 3: lot about, but I think that, for example, he would
- 11:26Speaker 3: be a player that would be more adept at thriving
- 11:31Speaker 3: in the previous way, the previous iteration of the offense,
- 11:35Speaker 3: where it was more of that inside zone. He's more
- 11:38Speaker 3: of a mall or a rogue raider attacking downhill and
- 11:41Speaker 3: really getting his body and strength to bawl over defenders.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Not to say that he can't do it this way,
- 11:47Speaker 3: because he's pretty darn athletic for as big as he is,
- 11:50Speaker 3: but just kind of offering a little bit of context.
- 11:53Speaker 2: You mentioned the draft earlier, and I just thought of
- 11:56Speaker 2: something Andrew is there a possibility that the ego are
- 12:00Speaker 2: going to be evaluating when they look at offensive linemen
- 12:04Speaker 2: maybe a little bit differently because there is no longer
- 12:08Speaker 2: a Jeff Stoutlin as the coach.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm fascinated by that because we don't quite know
- 12:14Speaker 3: what style of offensive lineman Chris Cooper is going to
- 12:17Speaker 3: cove it. All we can go off of is the
- 12:21Speaker 3: lineman that that really thrived when he was with the
- 12:23Speaker 3: Minnesota Vikings and the players that he coached, and the
- 12:28Speaker 3: mold of those kind of guys, and typically whether it
- 12:32Speaker 3: was the Broncos of the Vikings, they're linemen who are
- 12:34Speaker 3: along a little bit more undersized category and have that athleticism. Now,
- 12:40Speaker 3: whether or not the egles look to that in the draft,
- 12:43Speaker 3: that's one of the more fascinating things for me because
- 12:46Speaker 3: I look at someone at twenty three, like a Caden Proctor.
- 12:48Speaker 3: He's six foot seven, three hundred and sixty six pounds,
- 12:51Speaker 3: So one would surmise that that's probably not the kind
- 12:54Speaker 3: of lineman that you would ideally want in this system,
- 12:59Speaker 3: but he would be a tremendous addition for a Jeff
- 13:02Speaker 3: Stotlin offensive line room. So I'm really curious to see
- 13:06Speaker 3: which direction they go, what kind of mold of offensive
- 13:09Speaker 3: linemen they're they're coveting here. But it's ultimately going to
- 13:13Speaker 3: be up to you know, Chris Cooper, Ryan Mahaffey, and
- 13:16Speaker 3: Sean Mannion to kind of collaborate there and figure out
- 13:19Speaker 3: what their vision is ultimately going to be and what
- 13:20Speaker 3: they're going to ultimately ask of their offensive lineman.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I think the other part of the interesting thing with
- 13:27Speaker 2: the offensive line and this offense is also Andrew the
- 13:29Speaker 2: reality that, you know, is there going to be a
- 13:33Speaker 2: bit of a maybe, yeah, shall we call it a
- 13:36Speaker 2: slow start to the season, like or do we have
- 13:39Speaker 2: to kind of give our expectations and temper them a
- 13:41Speaker 2: little bit and be like, hey, it might take a
- 13:44Speaker 2: little bit of time for the quarterback, the offensive line,
- 13:48Speaker 2: et cetera, to all be on the same page with
- 13:50Speaker 2: the quarter We might not see the best version of
- 13:54Speaker 2: this offense week one, two, or three.
- 13:58Speaker 3: I'm glad you mentioned that, Josh Patient. That's something that
- 14:01Speaker 3: sounds very appealing in February. But when you get to
- 14:06Speaker 3: the regular season and you're at Week four and the
- 14:08Speaker 3: offense is struggling a little bit or maybe not performing
- 14:11Speaker 3: to the outside expectations. That's where you start to see
- 14:15Speaker 3: so many criticizing the coordinator, the quarterback, the offensive line,
- 14:19Speaker 3: go down the list. Yes, everyone should be patient. The
- 14:22Speaker 3: expectations should be that it's going to take some time
- 14:25Speaker 3: if they are to implement drastic measures to reimagine this offense.
- 14:29Speaker 3: It's unrealistic and really unfair to expect them to kind
- 14:32Speaker 3: of come out of the shoot week one firing on
- 14:35Speaker 3: all cylinders, especially when they're asking a lot of these guys,
- 14:40Speaker 3: presumably to do things that they haven't had to do
- 14:44Speaker 3: under Nick Sirianni. So it's going to be a change,
- 14:46Speaker 3: not only for Jalen Hurts, possibly the offensive line, the
- 14:49Speaker 3: receivers and things like that. It's going to be a
- 14:51Speaker 3: little bit more intricate from a passing game standpoint. Jalen
- 14:55Speaker 3: Hurts is going to be asked to do certain things.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Sean Maddie not only has to be able to to
- 15:00Speaker 3: implement that, he has to learn his personnel. The personnel
- 15:03Speaker 3: has to learn him, and any good coordinator that you
- 15:06Speaker 3: bring in is going to tailor to the strengths of
- 15:08Speaker 3: his players rather than the square peg, round hole analogy.
- 15:13Speaker 3: And so I think there's just a lot of the
- 15:15Speaker 3: introductory phases that you have to get out of the
- 15:17Speaker 3: way learning your personnel. You can't even imagine your scheme
- 15:21Speaker 3: without knowing who your players are, without knowing who you're
- 15:24Speaker 3: going to be working with next season. So I think
- 15:27Speaker 3: because of all those things, you have to take that
- 15:29Speaker 3: into account when you're looking at this offense. It may
- 15:32Speaker 3: have several star studded players on there, there's no disputing that.
- 15:36Speaker 3: And it may see as it may seem as simple
- 15:39Speaker 3: as that, Well, they're talented enough, they should be able
- 15:41Speaker 3: to get rolling early. It doesn't always work that way.
- 15:43Speaker 3: You have to let things play out and really let
- 15:46Speaker 3: the system marinee.
- 15:47Speaker 2: You just rob an interesting meme that I don't think
- 15:49Speaker 2: we have talked about enough here on Nice seven three
- 15:52Speaker 2: es be able to check out Joadis for Football on
- 15:54Speaker 2: four powered by the Ends of the Birds podcast. And
- 15:57Speaker 2: we keep talking about the players, the quarterback, the old line.
- 16:00Speaker 2: What about the change of coaching staff's impact on the
- 16:04Speaker 2: head coach. We haven't talked enough about the fact that
- 16:08Speaker 2: this is the first time that Sirianni will not have
- 16:12Speaker 2: one of his guys all on the staff. You had
- 16:14Speaker 2: Kevin Batulo for the previous five years. He had Stiken
- 16:17Speaker 2: for a few years. Sirianni now is going into a
- 16:22Speaker 2: year with basically none of you know, quote unquote his
- 16:26Speaker 2: guys anymore.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Yeah, so there is obviously the collapse in twenty twenty three.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Then the Eagles won the Super Bowl in twenty four. Okay,
- 16:34Speaker 3: Nick Sirianni deserves the benefit of the doubt. Everyone knew
- 16:37Speaker 3: that Kevin Petula was going to be the desired promotion
- 16:40Speaker 3: there and that was Nick Sirianni's guy. It didn't work
- 16:43Speaker 3: again this season for many reasons, and so at this
- 16:47Speaker 3: point you have to come to the understanding that, Okay,
- 16:50Speaker 3: we're gonna really go for an outside an outside name,
- 16:54Speaker 3: and we're going to let them mold the coaching staff into,
- 16:59Speaker 3: you know, to their vision and to really allow any
- 17:02Speaker 3: offensive coordinator to put their stamp on it, you have
- 17:05Speaker 3: to allow them to identify certain coaches that they want
- 17:07Speaker 3: to bring in. Now, Sean Mannion, being just two years
- 17:11Speaker 3: into the NFL as a coach, probably doesn't have a
- 17:13Speaker 3: large rollodex of coaches to really be able to lean
- 17:18Speaker 3: on or call and bring over. But I think the
- 17:21Speaker 3: ones that he did bring in are pretty intriguing. From
- 17:25Speaker 3: a couple of different perspectives here. But for Nick Sirianni,

- 17:50Speaker 3: time to get fully onboarded and for the coaches to
- 17:54Speaker 3: learn the personnel, the personnel to really learn the coaches
- 17:57Speaker 3: and the scheme, and it's going to be it's gonna
- 18:00Speaker 3: be new for those who want to change. You're getting it.
