- 0:12How life, friends, it's shown here.
- 0:14It's Tuesday, it's the 20th of February, and hello, thank you
- 0:19for tapping on play and inviting me into your day on this
- 0:23Plimsoll Day. What on earth is Plimsoll Day, I
- 0:27hear you ask? Well, those of us who are
- 0:30shipped during folk might know, but there was a guy back in the
- 0:331800s by the name of Samuel Plimsoll, who himself grew up
- 0:36really poor, became a British Member of Parliament and decided
- 0:40the thing I need to do with my career.
- 0:42He stops so many people dying as they transport goods by ship
- 0:47back in the day. This is terrible.
- 0:49They used to call them coffin ships because they just claimed
- 0:52the lives of so many sailors because there was 0 safety
- 0:56procedures in place. And so he wrote something which
- 1:00became law in 1874. And that law was that each ship
- 1:05needed a mark on the outside of that ship.
- 1:08This line which when that line got pushed underwater by the
- 1:12weight of the the load on the ship, they needed to stop
- 1:16loading the ship so that it wouldn't become overloaded and
- 1:18sink. And that, would you believe, is
- 1:20known as, yes, the Plimsoll line.
- 1:23And they reckon that this little line saves 22 people every
- 1:28single day from shipping accidents around the world.
- 1:32Isn't that interesting? So today's Plimsoll Day, they're
- 1:35clever dude who decided to take on their greedy ship owners of
- 1:39the day. And so we still have this mark
- 1:42on the side of our ships, the Plimsoll line.
- 1:44And that is why we remember this.
- 1:48Oh dear. We remember this day on the on
- 1:51the 10th of February, not the 20th of February.
- 1:53So that was 10 days ago. Let's let's just pretend it's
- 1:56been a quick 10 days. That's still a great story and
- 1:58worth sharing, but that is not the 20th, that is the 10th.
- 2:01Today is the 20th of February. Friends.
- 2:03Well aren't you glad that I am not in charge of your shipping?
- 2:08Cause your goods would be 10 days late all the time.
- 2:11Oh dear, let us go back to Colossae.
- 2:15There you go. This is a lot more forgiving
- 2:16because it was a long time ago where Paul has written this
- 2:20letter to this young church to encourage them in the truth of
- 2:24who Jesus is. And that, my friends, does not
- 2:28change from day to day, year to year, century to century.
- 2:31So let us go back and read together Colossians Chapter 2.
- 2:46I want you to know how much I've agonised for you for the church
- 2:50at Laodicea, and for many other believers who have never met me
- 2:54personally. I want them to be encouraged and
- 2:57knit together by strong ties of love.
- 3:01I want them to have complete confidence that they understand
- 3:05God's mysterious plan, which is Christ himself.
- 3:09In the hymn lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and
- 3:13knowledge. I'm telling you this so no one
- 3:17will deceive you with well crafted arguments.
- 3:21For though I'm far away from you, my heart is with you, and I
- 3:25rejoice that you are living as you should, and that your faith
- 3:29in Christ is strong. And now, just as you accepted
- 3:34Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him.
- 3:39Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built
- 3:43on him. Then your faith will grow strong
- 3:47and the truth you were taught and you will overflow with
- 3:50thankfulness. Don't let anyone capture you
- 3:54with empty philosophies and high sounding nonsense that comes
- 3:57from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world
- 4:01rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the
- 4:06fullness of God in a human body. So you are complete through your
- 4:12union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and
- 4:16authority. When you came to Christ, you
- 4:20were circumcised, but not by a physical procedure.
- 4:24Christ performed a spiritual circumcision, the cutting away
- 4:28of your sinful nature. For you were buried with Christ
- 4:33when you were baptised, and with him you were raised to new life,
- 4:38because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ
- 4:42from the dead. You were dead because of your
- 4:45sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away.
- 4:50Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our
- 4:55sins. He cancelled the record of the
- 4:57charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.
- 5:02In this way he disarmed the spiritual rulers and
- 5:06authorities. He shamed them publicly by his
- 5:10victory over them on the cross. So don't let anyone condemn you
- 5:16for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain Holy
- 5:20days or New Moons, ceremonies or Sabbaths.
- 5:24For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come, and
- 5:29Christ himself is that reality. Don't let anyone condemn you by
- 5:35insisting on pious self denial or the worship of angels, saying
- 5:41they have had visions about these things.
- 5:44Their sinful minds have made them proud, and they are not
- 5:48connected to Christ, the head of the body.
- 5:51For he holds the whole body together with its joints and
- 5:55ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.
- 6:00You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the
- 6:05spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following
- 6:09the rules of the world such as don't handle, don't taste, don't
- 6:14touch? Such rules are mere human
- 6:17teaching about things that deteriorate as we use them.
- 6:21These rules may seem wise because they require strong
- 6:24devotion, pious self denial, and severe bodily discipline, but
- 6:30they provide no help in conquering a person's evil
- 6:33desires. Jesus, thank you for this
- 6:46reminder that you are enough. And then it's so hard for us to
- 6:52comprehend the totality of your victory for us that we continue
- 6:59to try and prop it up with our efforts and by following rules
- 7:04and thinking that there must be more to it than just your
- 7:08incredible sacrifice for us. But now you have done it all.
- 7:15You are the Supreme Head and we are your children.
- 7:20We are your disciples and we just need to follow you, to
- 7:25trust in you and to know that what you have done is enough.
- 7:31Thank you, Jesus, that in you we have complete victory and
- 7:35complete confidence that we don't need to have doubt and
- 7:40fear, but that it's your forgiveness and your sacrifice
- 7:45that entirely makes us right with you.
- 7:49With God we praise you, incredible Saviour, and it's in
- 7:56your name we pray. Amen.
