Transcript
- 0:00I think one of the keywords for this one was exactly fun because
- 0:05we threw away all the rules and darkness there is to writing
- 0:08death metal songs. And the only rule that was was
- 0:11that if we thought it was fun, it was going on the record.
- 0:15And that definitely helped us branch out as much as we have.
- 0:25What's up, everybody? It's Kefi Coast codemag.com as
- 0:29the sirens go on behind me. They're coming for me.
- 0:32I'm hanging out with Fandom Beast today.
- 0:34How are you doing, Sir? I'm doing good today, thank you
- 0:36and waiting for the single to drop in a couple hours.
- 0:39So pretty exciting times. Yeah, what an exciting time.
- 0:42New album Colossal coming soon ahead of this as we're recording
- 0:46this, and I'm super stoked. I've been following this band
- 0:49for a long time. Actually, the guitar player in
- 0:52my band, last time I saw him was rocking his shirt, his white
- 0:56long sleeve from the Arch Enemy tour you guys just did.
- 0:59So it's super cool. I see the band all the time.
- 1:02I listen to the band. I've been following you guys
- 1:05since, you know, maybe not quite the very beginning because the
- 1:08band is around for about 10 years now, but definitely since
- 1:11the first full album. So yeah, let's talk Colossal.
- 1:14And I'm so stoked for this record.
- 1:16It's so fun. I don't use fun a lot in music.
- 1:19It's a lot of this riffs, but I I have so much fun listening to
- 1:24the band and, and just, it seems like there's just so much love
- 1:28and passion put into this extremely aggressive, gnarly
- 1:32music. Yeah, man, I think one of the
- 1:34keywords for this one was exactly fun because we threw
- 1:39away all the rules and dogmas there is to writing death metal
- 1:42songs. And the only rule that was was
- 1:45that if we thought it was fun, it was going on the record.
- 1:48And that definitely helped us branch out as much as we have.
- 1:53And yeah, that's the way for us, I think.
- 1:55Amazing. And I feel like the profile of
- 1:58the band has been rising. You, you know, I think there's
- 2:01been some amazing music coming out of Denmark.
- 2:04It's not just a little drummer in Metallica and King Diamond
- 2:07anymore. It's a great scene of bands and
- 2:11I feel like you're helping put your country a little stronger
- 2:15on the map. It's hard with Finland and
- 2:17Scandinavia and all the other Swedish, you know, so all the
- 2:20Swedish bands. But like, I feel like Denmark is
- 2:22really The profile is raised now, finally, I think, to where
- 2:26it belongs. Yeah, that scene is exploding.
- 2:29We're going really good. We have the guys from Neck
- 2:32Breaker are really turning some hits now they're supporting
- 2:35Slayer and supporting Kujira. So those guys are going to be
- 2:38off like a rocket and that's that's really awesome.
- 2:40What a time to be alive as we, you know, I know we just lost
- 2:45Ozzy yesterday as we recorded this and it's a sad time for
- 2:49rockers and metal heads. But it is, it does seem like a
- 2:52very good time when you know, we still have a lot of classic
- 2:55bands out there or back like in the case of Slayer, we've
- 2:58covered a lot since they came back and new band, you know,
- 3:01newer bands, let's say not new, but new to us, especially in
- 3:05America and Western Europe. You guys have been working
- 3:08really hard and touring and I feel like very prolific.
- 3:12I don't know if you write all the time or demo stuff all the
- 3:15time, but it just feels like since the 2019 released the four
- 3:20foot, this is the fourth full length and lots of singles and
- 3:23lots of EPS. So it feels like you guys are
- 3:26working very hard. Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 3:28No, we do. We actually do a lot of
- 3:30songwriting on the route too, because, you know, we're
- 3:33spending so much time and so much time together and that just
- 3:37inspires everyone. And we talk about music all the
- 3:39time and and then we just get to writing and also we meet up
- 3:43every Monday morning to rehearse and do all the band stuff.
- 3:46So yeah, I think already on some four or something. 5 for the
- 3:51next record too, because it is really inspiring to release
- 3:55Colossal as it is a new new kind of new kind of path for us.
- 3:59So yeah, we tore a lot and we play a lot and then we have a
- 4:02lot of fun. Right on.
- 4:04I'm glad you do. It has to be fun for you.
- 4:06That's always the first instinct is I know people, especially
- 4:10music fans, we're very possessive of bands and the
- 4:12first time we hear from a band we end up loving and we want
- 4:15them to stay that way. But you're living in creature
- 4:18and you have experiences and you play the you tour the world and
- 4:21then you're like, oh, you know, I want to do something a little
- 4:24different this next time. So you're the first fan you have
- 4:26to impress. I always say that and you know,
- 4:31Colossal, such a strong record. There's no skips top to bottom.
- 4:36You know, every band says our new record is our favorite or
- 4:38our best, but this, I think this really is your best record
- 4:41actually. Thank you.
- 4:42I think it is. I don't know.
- 4:44Yeah, of course it's our favorite.
- 4:45But you know, some of the rifts are from when Leslie was 14,
- 4:48some of them is from when I was 15.
- 4:50And it's like a full circle kind of project.
- 4:53And everyone got their early influences to be a part of that
- 4:57record because we just all the rules we had processed.
- 5:01So yeah, I'm pretty excited to release it very soon and hear
- 5:04what people think. Right on.
- 5:05And I was a big fan, by the way, of Necro Sapiens.
- 5:08So just so everybody knows, I've been again, been following the
- 5:10band and, you know, you put out that first big, you know,
- 5:14release in 2019 and then the whole world ground to a halt.
- 5:18But you kept going and kept working, which was nice.
- 5:21And, you know, work ethic is a thing.
- 5:24Nothing gets handed to you. And it's in the music business.
- 5:27You have to earn your time, whatever that is.
- 5:30And, you know, I hope people appreciate and understand that.
- 5:33Seems like you know you've taken this very seriously and it's
- 5:36reflected in the in the quality of the records.
- 5:39I really hope so too. But definitely ready, You know,
- 5:41it's been going well for 10 years and now we're ready to
- 5:44bring it to the to the bigger stages too.
- 5:47We did that with Archie enemy. They put us on the tour in the
- 5:50in the US and Canada, which was the best tour we've ever done.
- 5:53And so so more of those to come, I hope.
- 5:57But nonetheless, we'll, we'll keep playing and keep writing no
- 6:00matter what happens. Right on.
- 6:02We want you back here. Like I said, by all accounts, a
- 6:05lot of impressed heads here in the West Coast.
- 6:08Archie Enemy. One of the most professional
- 6:10bands I've ever met, actually, and always very first class with
- 6:14everything, how they treat people, how they carry
- 6:17themselves, business dealings. You know, I'm always a big fan.
- 6:21So going all the way back. But you know, I love Michael.
- 6:25I'm sure as a guitar player you have to, you know, there's like
- 6:29everybody has like a little shrine.
- 6:30Michael is kind of the new Michael Scheckner.
- 6:33Michael Ahmad. He is, you know, the guitar
- 6:36hero's Guitar Hero. He's so good.
- 6:37He he is very much and he's not, he's not, he's not difficult to
- 6:41talk to. You know, he's open about
- 6:42talking about his gear, his shirt collection, his history
- 6:46in, in all the different bands. So he's an all around cool guy,
- 6:50like a normal rocker, and that's pretty cool to experience as
- 6:53well. Yeah, and I don't know.
- 6:54Yeah. He's so laid back.
- 6:56Also, he's unassuming, which is surprising because you know, if
- 7:00he was sort of like, oh, I'm, I'm Michael, you know, if he was
- 7:03a little egotistical, you could appreciate why, because he's so
- 7:06good. He's so good, but he's so nice.
- 7:10He always struck me as very nice a few times we've met in person.
- 7:13So very cool stuff. As far as Colossal is concerned,
- 7:17like I said, it's definitely a step up.
- 7:19It's definitely heavier and catchier than anything, but I
- 7:23love, again, the song quality. It feels like this album was
- 7:27done with so much care. It's long, but like I said,
- 7:30there's no there's no songs I would leave off or kick off the
- 7:33island if you will. I would keep everything, so I'm
- 7:35glad you did too. I'm glad we did.
- 7:38It's tough to decide. We have some bonus songs for the
- 7:42for the CD edition that didn't make the album.
- 7:46But yeah, I think we're very, very happy with it.
- 7:48We spent a long time doing, we were in the studio 5 or 6 times,
- 7:53so it was a long process, but I think that's the right thing to
- 7:56do. We got to play a lot of the
- 7:57songs live before recording them to see how they went on, you
- 8:01know, with an audience. So yeah, definitely the most
- 8:05different record recording, writing and sound wise we've
- 8:10ever done. Absolutely, and one of the
- 8:12trademarks of the band that beside great merch is always
- 8:15great artwork on the albums. I love this very distinctive
- 8:18artwork. It doesn't it's it's super
- 8:21eye-catching right with the colors, it's very vibrant, but
- 8:24it's also like, you know, just definitely represents the name
- 8:28colossal. It feels huge and I wanted to
- 8:31shout out your artists properly. Yeah, man, it's an amazing.
- 8:34It's an amazing cover. And he really understood right
- 8:37away when I talked to him about, you know, Judas Priest and Thin
- 8:40Lizzy Chinatown and all that era of covers that are just huge.
- 8:45And I think he hit it spot on. I think it's a great cover.
- 8:47It's very different from our other covers, but then again, it
- 8:50is a very different record. So I'm really happy how that
- 8:53turned out as well. Yeah, it's definitely not an
- 8:55atypical death metal related cover, but it definitely works.
- 8:59And I love that you mentioned then Lizzie.
- 9:01That's one of my favorite bands and clearly an influence on
- 9:04Beast and, you know, so underrated.
- 9:07I feel like people only you know, they know the hits radio
- 9:10here in America plays just the hit songs or the hit songs end
- 9:13up in a car commercial or movie. But such a fantastic band all
- 9:18the way through really from the beginning, you know, just an
- 9:22incredible run. And I just feel like here in
- 9:24America, they just didn't get to be as big as they should have.
- 9:27But you know, it makes me sad. But what an incredible band and
- 9:31I and I clearly a band that has their fingerprints on on your
- 9:34band. Very much, very much.
- 9:36Especially, you know, like the Beacons.
- 9:38That instrumental before the last track of the album is an
- 9:42homage to everything Irish and Cliffs of Dover and Mark
- 9:46Knopfler, and we listen to it a lot and we like that melodic
- 9:50rock. It's nice we got to put an
- 9:52instrumental like that into the album.
- 9:54And I'm glad to. We are right around the corner.
- 9:57You know, it's the midst of festival season in Europe and we
- 10:01have some festivals here in America.
- 10:02We're starting to do our part where we're catching up, but not
- 10:05quite. And you are playing Beyond the
- 10:07Gates, which we've covered last year and and we'll cover again
- 10:11in the future and super excited about that.
- 10:13Is there anybody beside your own performance that you're most
- 10:15excited to see on that lineup? I actually don't think we're
- 10:18playing beyond the gates. Oh, OK, sorry my bad.
- 10:21It's. All good, I got my.
- 10:23Schedule so continue. Yeah, we're playing.
- 10:29We're playing Summer Breeze where we're going to watch our
- 10:31friends in Coffin Feeder. We're going to play.
- 10:33Yeah, actually we're going to play twice at Summer Breeze
- 10:36because we have our normal set Wednesday and then Tuesday we
- 10:39have like a camping ground set where we're playing covers.
- 10:42We play some covers by Entombed, some by Motörhead and some by
- 10:45Black Sabbath. It's it's going to be a fun
- 10:48festival. I can't really remember the
- 10:50lineup, but I remember looking at it and being like holy shit,
- 10:53we're going to be so busy playing and busy watching other
- 10:56bands. So it's it's going to be
- 10:58awesome. Right on summer Vree is one of
- 10:59the, you know, best names in metal festivals and they've
- 11:03branched out to other countries and such a such a fun time and
- 11:08I'm excited. Cover set.
- 11:09You know, I would have met, you know, any covers you guys do
- 11:13would be, you know, hella good. But I'm really, you know, that's
- 11:16very exciting. Motörhead and Sabbath, of
- 11:18course. So yeah, you know, maybe we get
- 11:20some Thin Lizzy in there, some Thin Lizzy death metal, maybe
- 11:23like a death metal version of something.
- 11:25Yeah, maybe we really want to do Black Rose.
- 11:27Oh, Black Rose, Because. Yeah, it's a huge track.
- 11:30So we have Black Rose. We also talked about doing
- 11:32Kansas Carry On, My Wayward Son. Also, we talked about doing some
- 11:37Opeth covers when we get the time because we spend all the
- 11:40time writing our own. But someday we'll have the time
- 11:43to do a do a really fun. Nice.
- 11:46I'm surprised more people don't cover Opeth.
- 11:48They're so huge and such a rich catalog to pull from.
- 11:51If you love the early black and death metal, you have that.
- 11:54If you like the Stoner doom, you can do the newer stuff, a little
- 11:57psychedelic rock, the kraut rock stuff.
- 11:59So yeah, you know, there's a little something for everybody.
- 12:03I have definitely hurt myself trying to learn deliverance on
- 12:07bass really hard to get the rhythms, so shout out to them.
- 12:11So yeah, that's fun. What do you need to take with
- 12:13you on tour that you know to keep like a little essence of
- 12:16home so you feel good when you hit the road?
- 12:20I don't think we have anything in particular, but the guys all
- 12:23have families, so whenever they're Facetiming their wives
- 12:27or their kids, we're always saying hi, like as as a group.
- 12:31And that's really, really nice to get to get to see the ones at
- 12:34home. And it's really awesome that we
- 12:37get to be a part of the other guys family as well.
- 12:40We know the kids and yeah, talk to them when we're on tour.
- 12:44So yeah, that keeps us, keeps us safe and happy, I guess.
- 12:48Right on that's really important is a little piece of home.
- 12:52The road can be hard. You were here in the States for
- 12:54quite a while. I'm sure it's a big culture
- 12:56shock. Hopefully again, all the reports
- 12:59I heard were that you guys went over well and and really built
- 13:02the fan base. So I hope you come back, please
- 13:05come back and share some more riffs with us and and rage out
- 13:08with us. We need it.
- 13:09We need to distract ourselves from everything else out there.
- 13:12Yeah. It's hot tonight over there, but
- 13:15we didn't feel it that much. But for sure we'll be back.
- 13:18We're working on it right now. There was supposed to be some
- 13:21tours in the spring that didn't go anyways.
- 13:24And yeah, we're just waiting for the right opportunity and then
- 13:26we'll go right back because it's an awesome place to tour and you
- 13:29people over there are awesome, so why not?
- 13:32Right on. We appreciate you.
- 13:34You know, I always say like, especially for heavy music,
- 13:37especially for death metal. Nobody is here by accident.
- 13:40You're here because you want to be here.
- 13:41Nobody's a casual fan. I like Slayer once for a few
- 13:44minutes. Nobody like everybody's like
- 13:46slut. You know, death metal.
- 13:49That's that's how we are. We, we love our shit intensely,
- 13:52for better or worse as a people. So I'm glad you had a good
- 13:55experience here and I wish you the best spend from beast man.
- 13:59Thank you so much for hanging out with us today.
- 14:02Best of luck with Colossal coming out soon on Century Media
- 14:05Records and again just amazingly get to talk to you and and share
- 14:09this time. Thank you so much.
- 14:10Thank you man, thanks for having me.
