- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Hi guys, welcome back to Skincare Anarchy.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: This is Ekta, and I have another phenomenal guest for you guys.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: I know that you've seen her line everywhere.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: It is definitely an Instagram favorite.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: And I know when I was uh in my influencer stage, I definitely saw this line everywhere.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: So uh without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to Allie Perry Hatch, who is the founder of Earth Harbor Skincare.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the show, Allie.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: I am so excited to talk to you about your brand and about you and your whole journey.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: So I thank you so much for this honor.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Likewise, are you kidding me?
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: I already feel I already feel a deep connection between us, Ecta.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: So I'm excited for this.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: And for everyone listening, right for the the show recording, we were talking about Mercury retrograde and how we both like believe in it.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: So like if this whole meeting just craps out on us all of a sudden, that's why, right?
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: Both of us just starting.
- 1:53unknown: Yeah.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I want to get started.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: I want to talk about you first because I know that you know every founder has a beautiful vision and a reason behind why they start their brand.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: And I want you to tell us um what really led to Earth Harbor.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: You know, what what compelled you to start your own line?
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, I feel like whenever someone asks me that, it's like, where do I begin?
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: Because everyone has that short and long story, as far as I'm concerned, you know what I mean?
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: Just because life just kind of leads you and down all sorts of roads.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: Um, but I guess I'll sort of start at the beginning, but I won't, you know, bore you guys.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, I've got these talks of details.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: Well, I so I grew up on a little island off the coast of Georgia.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: Um, yes, Georgia has a coast, and yes, it has little islands.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, it's called St.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Simon's Island.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: And um it was just, you know, it's just kind of like a really small, like very rural place.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: And so I really just grew up roaming the beaches and the marshes there.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: Um, and just that's kind of where my love of really deep love of the environment and just like island life um at its core, like, like I guess was instilled in me.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Um and then I went to college and grad school, all that jazz, and just I think maybe a lot of that was because that influence of where I grew up.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: Um, I started um, well, I I did research and got my graduate degree in like health science.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: So I have my MPH.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Um, and what I did with that was um actually had a career in humanitarian humanitarian engineering.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: Um, and then along with that too, actually, um, because I studied in Singapore for a bit.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: And that's actually where I started.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was awesome.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: And um, that's where I actually started about a decade ago now, um, like practicing herbalism as well.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: So I've got this kind of like crazy, you like actually a really unique background I've come to find um for the industry that I'm in, even for indie clean beauty.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: Um, and so yeah, like, you know, so part of I guess the next crazy thing is like my husband and I, we like really sought to live like a mindful lifestyle.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, I had spent a lot of time traveling and doing research.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: Um I actually am a published researcher, um, but just trying to um, you know, seek out because I actually specifically like specialized in toxicology and environmental health.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: No way, me too.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Wait, are you serious?
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: No, I just did, oh my gosh, I'm uh this is a total tangent, but yes, of course.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: I just did I presented a poster recently about nanoparticle toxicity and lung pathologies.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: How did we miss that?
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: I don't, I just you know what, toxicology all day, dude.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Okay, legit.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Actually, I'm looking at your picture now and I see uh you got like a lab coat on, and yep, you're you're legit, Missy.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, that's why.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: And so you can just see where how this is like perfectly like have getting married into what Earth Harbor like has become.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: But like the uh again, it is seems like a tangent.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: Like all my friends are still like, wait, you're doing you have a skincare business, like a self-care business?
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: Like what, like, when did that happen?
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: And so what the like I guess what happened with that was um my husband and I, you know, we were like, we were just kind of like, okay, let's go like off the grid, start learning this like really like mindful lifestyle.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: We built a tree house um off the grid um and lived in that for like a few years.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: And within that time frame, um, we actually both of us, but specifically me, got like I got in a near fatal car accident.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: Um and it was it was yeah, no, it was uh I still have a lot of residual effects from that actually.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, it's definitely a continual healing process, and I've sort of had to come to terms with the fact that I will never be my pre-accident self again.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: But um in search of becoming myself, like getting back to at least kind of a baseline, you know, that's when I really started being super mindful and intentional of what I was putting both in and on my body.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: And also, though, at the same time, it just gets crazier and crazier, like what I told you, like how long do you want the story to go?
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: But um, like shortly.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: No, I mean, I want to know everything.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: That's crazy, dude.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: That you got into such a terrible.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: I'm so sorry.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, it was it was like mental, like I I actually like like basically it's like my brain exploded.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: Okay, no, not really, but like it um I just had you know, like a lot of mental injuries, like to my my brain, um, traumatic brain injury, um, and then also other like physical things.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Just it's just like a lot that goes on with that, right?
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, yeah.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: I won't get into the details, but uh it essentially like I had to quit my job, I had to quit um like traveling, I couldn't even look at computer screens, like I couldn't really like listen to music, just so many things that I loved.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: And so I basically just went back to this like low maintenance hobby that I'd had, and that was, you know, like tinkering around in the kitchen, like making skincare.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: Um, and so that's really like where my comfort zone was at the time.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: And then part of just, you know, okay, and then I skipped around, but I found out right afterwards that I was pregnant.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: And so that's when I was like, okay, like I obviously really need to be mindful of what I'm putting in and on my body, but then also like you kind of think of future generations.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: So you're like, well, now I also need to be super conscientious about like what I'm not just like putting in and on my body, but like the effects that's all having on humanity and like our planet, you know what I mean?
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: And so yeah, um what I fell short of was like finding actually like self-care that met all of like that encompassed all of that, that was like very like comprehensive, because I do believe that that's what we need for long-term health and beauty.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: Us and the planet needs that.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: Um, and so that's basically how Earth Harbor was born, just like finding like it within my own tinkering around in my kitchen, like that that's the only way I was going to like meet all of those strict standards that I had of being like actually all plant derived, you know, but proven.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: So like rooted in science.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: Um, and then beyond clean, you know, beyond non-toxic, beyond plant-based, because also what counts is being like sustainable, ethical, versatile, you know, enough for your ever-changing lifestyle and skin as well.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Um, just uh, and you know, I think the other two things too, because you hear that a lot with a lot of clean beauty brands, all that I just mentioned, but I think with Earth Harbor, it is that background that I have that really like like legitimizes it.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: So there are no like asterisks, you know, or like yeah, that makes the world of difference.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like that makes a world of difference.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, the fact that you have a background and you've studied herbal medicine and that you've actually done the homework, that's a huge difference between somebody who just is claiming that you know what, uh, I made this in my kitchen and it's non-toxic and it's clean and it's vegan and blah, blah, blah.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: No, like that, you know, no, absolutely not.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: You have to be your homework.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: And and then I think part of that too is like not just my background, but also I so I have been like diagnosed with what was formerly like Asperger's.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: And so um, like now it's known as autism spectrum disorder.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: And so I feel like that adds like an extra layer of like quirkiness kind of to the brand, if that makes sense.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it does.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, I I think there is just kind of this, that like inspirational, like, like uh what am I trying to say?
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: Not inspirational, but like it sparks like wonderful like joyment.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: I feel like, you know, like that's what I wanted with the brand.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: Um, and also just kind of like a you know, like affordable luxury, you know, it's not like the the cheapest, but it's also for like all the quality that you're getting and all of the um just beauty of it, you know, and quality, um, it really is actually um one of the more affordable ones that hits all those marks as well, like products on the market.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: But um no, absolutely.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: And I think that the way, you know, I I can tell you as a consumer, when I first saw your brand, and this was long before I had uh sent you an invitation to come onto the show, I uh you know, I'd seen the brand everywhere and I was just in love with the packaging.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: I just love the aesthetic of it, it made me feel happy, you know what I mean?
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: Looking at it.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: And I I talk about this on my podcast and I and I try to bring this concept up.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: And you know, I know there's a lot of criticism out there about just like packaging, but it's like, you know what?
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: If something doesn't resonate with me from a visual aspect, I'm not gonna want to buy it.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: So it's like when I look at something and it genuinely makes me happy or it makes me smile, go, ooh, I really want that.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: That makes a huge difference.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: And I think that, you know, yeah.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: Sorry, I I I have a I sometimes talk over people and I'm no, me too, me too.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: Don't worry.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: I like actually really bad about that.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: And I feel very two P's in our pod, Allie.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Seriously.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: Yes, I love it.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: I'm feeling it.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh I honestly don't even remember what I was gonna say.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm so sorry.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: But the packaging, the packaging, like it was oh, so what I was gonna say about that was just like I think the irony of like how like you're saying it made you feel happy, and it does.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: It that's what I wanted out of it, is that when I was like designing it and like just trying to find all of the you know, like the containers and closures and everything, like I was actually in such a dark place, you know what I mean?
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Like like my whole life got like turned upside down.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: Um, and even like fine, anyways, there was a lot of struggles going on.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: I was like financially, like I I lost my job.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: My husband had to quit his job to take care of me, you know.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: Like I was still paying, I just finished grad school, right?
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: So great financial situation to be in.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: The loans, yeah, the loans.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: I'm still paying off my medical school loans.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, dude, yeah, I know.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: I actually am very, very proud to say I just finished paying off my loans.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: So thank you, Earth Harbor, and thank you, customers, for helping that dream come true.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: And hey, Ecta, you got this, you'll do it too.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I hope so.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but no, that's that's amazing.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: And you know, honestly, here's the thing like I think that you know, when it comes to brands, for me as a consumer, I would rather know, and this is why I always start off my podcast with asking the guests that I've invited on to tell me about yourself because to me that's more important than just another moisturizer or another serum.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: It's like I want to know, like when I'm gonna be using your products, I want to think about Allie.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: I want to think about what she went through to create this brand.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: I want to think about all the hard work and all of the inspiration that went into this line.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: And that's why you're making sense, yeah.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so yes, absolutely.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: And I think that a lot of people feel that way.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Maybe some people don't, but it is.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: It's the it's the beauty of indie beauty, right?
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it is.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Now I want to ask you, where did the narrow the name Earth Harbor come from?
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: Is it from the island that you grew up on, or is it um it actually didn't?
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: Where did the name obviously just like you know, we uh I I I like to harness, you know, the power of earth and ocean, and I think just kind of bring those together, you know, it's skincare from like the land and sea.
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: So earth is just like, you know, obviously like the more land part of that, and then harbors the more sea, like ocean y aspect of that.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: Um so maybe that's how it just it just resonated with me.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: Um, and I actually was looking through old journals recently and I found like a little illustration I did with like Earth Harbor.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: It was it was way ugly, but I was just like, whoa, like this has been around in my brain for a long time, like even before the accident, actually.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: I was just kind of like, isn't that weird?
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: Like just so weird.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: But yeah, no, but you know, it's crazy because um, you know, we write in our journals or we do we do little things in our mo in our life, and then looking back, you know, I remember when I was uh very, very young, I was maybe I don't know, 11, 12 years old, and I still have my journals from back then, and but and I wrote out my name.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: I remember signing my name and writing MD and then something else like I wrote like all my credentials out because I always wanted to be a doctor, and so I was like, you know, and it is like yeah, like is time linear or circular or what?
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: Like right.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, I love you.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, I love you.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Yes, for real.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: No, time is a dimension on its own, and we there's no way for us to understand what it is, you know, and that's that's a beautiful, beautiful thing to bring up because honestly, it these kind of things, I mean, they're timeless, you know, inspiration is timeless.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: There is no limit to you know when we can attain what we always thought we wanted, you know.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: So it's it's it's a beautiful thing.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: And I love that you brought that up about the journaling because I think you know, I I see that a lot now.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Like I know that like you know, the buzz is all around like yoga and meditation and journaling and all that, but it's like for those of us who've been doing it for a while, like take it from us.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: It works, you know, like it really works.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it really does.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: And I should start doing more of it again.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: I would have got no, but I wanna I want to actually ask you because you have your products are so cool.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Like, I really like that you have um a nice array of products, but it's not like overwhelming in any way, nothing is redundant, nothing is like, you know, oh, here's a product, but she has like two other ones that are just like this.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: It's nothing is like that.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: And I want to talk to you about, you know, when you first started designing the line and like what you wanted um in terms of like, you know, your your Hallmark products or your first few products, what were what what did you have in mind?
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that's really cool that you asked that because it was all very intentional.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: So I'm actually glad to hear that that comes through.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: Um, like I would stay up at night just kind of like visualizing it all and like how it was all like connecting to each other and like routines or slash rituals, you know, as we like to call them.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: Um, and so I'd almost say, you know, going back to um, or maybe I hadn't mentioned this before, but I I did that was part of like what I was seeking out in a skincare line that I couldn't find, and that was the like comprehensive yet like holistic nature of it all.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: Um that that did all that was all intentional.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: Like I think now I see a lot of um brands, and it's cool like if they can do like, but like with the cocktailing and things like that's nothing new, but um, that's something that from the beginning I was like, this is how I want to formulate, you know, my products to like all be able to um yeah, be mixed, matched, like you know, just adapt again, like adaptability, versatility, personalization is really important.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Um, so I don't know if that's like really answering your question.
- 17:12SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, it does.
- 17:14SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, like I if again, like journals, like, you know, if you look through them, I, you know, was like writing out like the types of ingredients, like the functionalities that I wanted, what I had, what I didn't see out there yet.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, because there is benchmarking too.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: There is definitely, I think a lot of it was super serendipitous, um, to be honest.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Like, I think, you know, with any amount of success, like it kind of annoys me when people don't like acknowledge luck, you know.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: Um so I will be the first to acknowledge that.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: But um also there was a lot of thought and a lot of just again, like late nights, long hours, benchmarking and just doing things like that too.
- 17:57SPEAKER_02: So just kind of a combination of it all, you know.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: No, I love that.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: And I and I think that, you know, it's also important to figure out like what actually works, right?
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Because like when I go through your product, it's like you you have products that are actually things that, you know, they're not over-promising.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: And that's one of the biggest problems I see in this industry is like products that overpromise something.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: And I was talking to somebody the other day, just a friend of mine, and we talk, you know, we nerd out about skincare and ingredients and all that, you know, as if I'm not getting enough of that from the podcast.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: You know, I have to do it in my free time also.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Um, but like we were nerding out and we were talking about like retinol and stuff, and you know, and no hate towards retinol.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: But I personally like I really prefer like an exfoliating product more than I prefer retinol because for me, I've noticed a better response in my skin.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: And I know that your line has um a nice range of products that are geared towards like exfoliation and just renewal, you know, and just kind of like and like alternative to um, yeah, like botanical alternatives to, you know, like exactly.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: And I really like that.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: And I and I want to ask you like, is that is that intentional or is that something that you just prefer, like, you know, in your skincare?
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: Um, both.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, that was super intentional because um, and you know, part of I guess I should um preface that those late nights and all that time was spent with doing a lot of research, um, because you know, like having access to um a lot of databases that like not everyone has access to, just from being a student and researcher and stuff, you know, I was able to like really look into um those, you know, essentially like some of them I would save in botanical superiors to um, you know, those like usual actives that you see.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: Um, but but yeah, like I think just longing for because I I actually have very sensitive skin myself too.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: So that that was, I mean, it was if anything, not selfish, but I'm like, hey, like I want something for me too, you know, and like like so just going based off of you know my own skin.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: And now, of course, um, for the last like couple of years, we also um test on friends, family, usually getting up into like the hundred like zone, like 60 to 100 people that we test, you know, new formulas and stuff on.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: But uh, but yeah, I I can go into so much, like so many tangents on all these questions.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: I'm like, how do I like hone this in?
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: And my brain is a very good job at prioritizing what I talk about, I guess.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: Like, um, but yeah, feel free to keep asking questions.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: No, no, I love it, I love it.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: You're actually answering all of my questions, and then you know, the tangents are the way that you answer my questions because my questions are also tangents.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: So I totally get it.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: And you know, and I always like to say women, like honestly, I always say this, and I don't know if you can relate, but like I always say men are linear thinkers, women are circumferential thinkers.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: So we think in like 15 different directions at once, and that's how we answer questions.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: So, you know what?
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: That's how it works.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: It's true, and I've noticed recently too, um, just the more because you know, being like a founder and CEO, I have to I go out of my comfort zone like a lot to do podcasts, for instance, like this, because I am definitely a huge introvert.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: Um, and yeah, anyways, but uh, you know, it definitely does push me, but I've noticed as you know, just having to communicate on a regular basis with a lot of people all the time, that I out of all those tangents, for some reason, I start talking about like the least important ones and I build up to the most important.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: And sometimes I don't even get to the most important until my like I skip to another beat.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: I don't know, it's kind of weird, but yeah, no, I mean it happens.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: You know, we always like it's like you get focused on one thing and then you just keep talking about it.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: And I a lot of guests, you know, that I invite on do that.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Like I was talking to um the other day, I was talking to Dr.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Um Ben Van Handel, and he's the founder of this uh this new line.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: And and he was at the end of the thing.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: He was like, I didn't even get to tell you about my clinical trials or any of the things that I had on my list.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: I'm like, it's okay, come back, you know, go for part two.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: But like, so it happens.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: But I'm not for even making a list.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: I was like, should I do that?
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: No, it'll just drive me crazy.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: No, just leave it, you know.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: I like to do it.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: I like to have like a nice candid conversation, just relaxed.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: And and that's exactly what we're doing.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: And so I won't actually ask you because I know that you also have um a nice, you've kind of covered everything, really.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's not just about skincare, it's about overall care.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: And that's really how I look at your brand.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: It's just this beautiful self-care brand.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: And because you've got hair products, you've got like an this amazing, by the way, my mother is obsessed with your island jade uh gemstone facial therapy mask.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: She's obsessed with it.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: She uses it every night.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Every night.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: Whenever my intervention, I get like my heart gets extra warm.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: Like, oh my gosh, she loves it.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: And it's, you know, she told me because she has a hard time going to sleep at night because you know, she her blood pressure, she's one of those people that has like hypertension, but she like it goes up and down and she's on medication for it, but it still like fluctuates.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: So she told me that because it's weighted, it like really puts her to sleep.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: And so when she puts it on her eyes, it's like she's like, I don't know what it is, but it just like makes my whole body and my whole mind just calm down.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: It's like you know how like they say like ADHD people like they have like weighted blankets for them because it helps them.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like the same concept.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: Like, that's how she describes it.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: We hear that a lot.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, but that's so awesome.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, I definitely gave it to my dad too, who has like the same thing.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: So um it can't it's a unisex product, right?
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, all of your products are, but I want to actually ask you um how you like how was that?
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: Did you it did it take you a while to transition into like the other areas of self-care, like like hair care or like you know, just body care, or was it something that just you were like screw it, today I'm gonna make a body serum, and then you just went for it.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: How did that work business-wise?
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: That's great.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: So um, and actually the very we launched, I think, um, or like I guess I launch, I always say we now, but um, I launched Earth Harbor um with I forgot how many SKUs, but it was kind of a lot for like a new brand, but it was like we were so like little and scrappy that it was just kind of like it it wasn't like a scaling thing yet.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: So I actually started with uh face, hair, and body, um, believe it or not.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: Um, and that's just because that's personally like what like I was working on for myself.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: And again, now like we do have to take scalability into account, like with everything.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: And that sometimes is frustrating because it kind of like disrupts like my creative flow, you know.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: And so it's like bittersweet, you know.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, and actually I will let you know and let you in on something here, which I think is the first time I will have mentioned this, is that yeah, are working on um a shampoo and conditioner.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: So I'm so stoked about that.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: You better send it to me before everybody because I want to try it.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: Okay, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, so that's just really so exciting.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: That's so exciting.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: I know that you have um a beautiful hair product.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: It's called Beach Waves, and I love that you have that because I'm one of those people that never does my hair.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: Like I step out of the shower and I just spray it with some beach, like some like wave spray.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: But so I love that you have like like your products, like honestly, to me, remind me of like full-blown, like mermaid vibes, like just you know, natural, like island babe, like that that's what I think of when I think of Earth Harbor, like just natural, you know what I mean?
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: Like natural beauty, like just put on really and that's what I call it.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: Then like we're beach beauty minimalists, like you got it, like that's what it is.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the vibe, though.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: That's the vibe.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: I really love it, and I I'm so excited for you.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: That's I I'm sure it's gonna be amazing, just like everything else.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: It it's in what you're saying about the vibe, just I guess speaking to that too, is you know, that's something just like our core roots, like because we have really grown like insanely fast just being three years old, um, and really trying to stick with that, you know, like working with you know, people like all over the US now.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: And I don't know, I'm just like, how do we like keep to this very like core, like our you know, all these ethics, our mission, you know, everything like that.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: It's like I've definitely had to pass up on obviously like a lot of opportunities because of just trying to really hone that in.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: And I'm definitely like a micromanager and I'm working on that.
- 26:37SPEAKER_02: But at the same time, I think it's made us really unique in that um, you know, like we actually are one of the few um uh indie brands, even this is kind of a rarity, but um, that we we keep everything or are at least most things have already been in-house, but we're actually continuing to move even more in-house with um everything from ingredient sourcing to production, filling, fulfillment, like all that, you know, so that it's like it's every step of the way is Earth Harbor, like it's all us.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: It's it's again, it's kind of my obsession with um wanting to make sure everything really is like as sustainable and ethical like as it can be.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: And you lose that in every single step of the way and every even the product lifecycle, if you know, you don't have your hand in that as a company.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: Um, and so I guess I just wanted to throw that in there because it is something um that's unique about us, and we actually are the first skincare brand too, um, to be certified or becoming certified um plastic negative, carbon neutral, and of course, like our good old 1% for the planet membership, too.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, just um I don't know, it's like I I'm trying really hard.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: Like I anything I do, I do it like full force and with like such a great passion.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: And I loved my job and my career before, like as a humanitarian engineer.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: Like that's what I longed to do my whole life.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: And I just see a really great opportunity in the this industry to to bring that um to light here.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, and I feel like alright, it's not it's starting to really like lead the way or like kind of almost like a lighthouse.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: I hope to be like that, you know, um to bring in the harbor, the harbor puns.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: But um, but yeah, like continu like as as we grow and as we mature as a company, um, that's just that is my goal to just couple my background with like with the beauty industry.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: Like I think it's so needed and um just hope that's like a breath of fresh air for everyone.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Um and I think something this is uh kind of going off a little bit of topic, but I do want to make sure I mention that I do work with a chemist.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: Like at the very beginning, it was me um doing it.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: Um but once I started getting into water-based products, I I brought a chemist in right away because again, right, toxicology background, I was like, uh-uh, we ain't gonna have any mold, bacteria, fungus, none of that in our products.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: I think that's actually another unique thing about us is that like, yeah, you know, sometimes you get some of that grody stuff um in skincare, but all of ours are like tested.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: And um, I always say that it's like one year shelf life, but it's actually been proven all of our stuff is like well over two years because I get all that tested.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: That's so awesome.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: And you know, I want to ask you because I know a lot of people are dying to know where and how you come up with the beautiful colors in your products because they are just so vibrant and so beautiful.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: And like in terms of the chemistry, I'm very curious like how you get them to be like, you know, so beautiful.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: So vibrant.
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: Yes, I'm glad you asked that because I feel like some people are like, there's no way that that's all natural, or like that's gotta be fake.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: But nope, it's not, and that is like literally one of my favorite, favorite things.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: Um, and it, you know, it usually is towards the end of like a formulation or formulating process.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: Like sometimes I will have kind of the color in mind, like, I'd love for this to be this color, but like it may just not work out, you know, because uh like natural ingredients are just so finicky, it's insane.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: But um, but yeah, like one, it just it is, it's so magical, like literally like pure magic.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: Um, and so actually the most there there's some that are more like common, like blue tansy, um, you know, see buckthorn, and then you know, you you have like your like right, like a little bit of an art background in there where you, if you mix primary colors, you get other colors, you know.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: So that kind of comes into play too.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: But uh, we also found like a super cool um like really leading edge plant-based uh like biocolor lab in Singapore.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: And that's actually um who we work with a lot now for like a more stabilized color, um, because that is like something that's actually really like if something's exposed to like sunlight, sometimes for like multiple length, like like just a long time or just other factors like pH or whatever, like you know, you can get some crazy color changes.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: But this lab in particular um has like a really crazy process where like they coat it with like a like microscopically, like with like a wax, and it's just like it's yeah, I won't get into all of it, but that's that sounds really cool.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: No, it sounds really cool because like I know, like for example, like the the Helios anti-pollution use emple, like it is beautiful, it's like this beautiful saffron red, and it transitions into like an orange, like it might be the sunset.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: It's so beautiful, like it's just it's stunning.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: So thank you.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: That means a lot.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: No, I I love it.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: I love that you've you know you've created such a unique way to bring color into people's lives.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think self-care is just so much, right?
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: It's like there's so many aspects, you know.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: It's it's one thing to have wonderful products that are efficacious and they work and they are coming from our true science, you know, heavy background, but obviously we want to like what we're putting on our skin.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: So no, totally.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: That's why I think I've heard and I've gotten a lot of feedback, you know, not just from our our mer babes, aka customers, but um from buyers and like really prestigious, like retail buyers, you know, and that they're like, yeah, like this is so awesome that you really are like rooted in science and you know, like you are using um, you know, peer-reviewed like research to back up, you know, these certain like um botanical actives that you have, but then yeah, like it's just so like it's so happy, like you said at the very beginning.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: It's so happy.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: I love it, like this magical feeling, like it it does.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: And I just yeah, like everyone, you just everyone deserves that, like day in and day out.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Like you've got to, because you know, like we were talking about, like we don't even have time to journal anymore, even though we see how like wonderful that is for our lives, you know.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: Um I think we should make a journal, Allie.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: You and I should do like a Earth Harbor and essay collab and make a journal.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, I would.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: And it would be handwritten and not a blog.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, it would.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: That's that and that's what's I feel like so missed now is like I do miss the the manual, not like not the analog or you know, whatever.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: Um but um no, I love it.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, I actually want to ask you because I am a huge fan of like face masks.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna lie to you.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Like, I I think that's my favorite, like all time favorite skincare product is a face mask.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: Like I love them.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Like, and people like hate on me because they're like extra, like there are so many great, like, you know, what about serums and all that?
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, yeah, I love a good serum, but yo, I love a great face mask.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Don't you know what I mean?
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Yes, and you have such amazing, such amazing masks.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, what made you go in that direction?
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: And and do you I mean, are they some of your best-selling products?
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: Because I'm really wondering if people still like masks because people look at me so weird when I say that.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: So I I want you to tell me that is kind of true.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: Um, so they are um some of our best-selling products, and the the only thing I would say, like to to note um or you know, adjust for um in your interpretation of this, is that they are also some of our, I guess, like a larger for a more affordable price product though.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: So I'm like, I don't know if that feeds into why it's like a better seller, like Citrine C, um, which can be used, you know, like as an exfoliating mask, like slash purifying mask.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: Um, and then uh blue crush, which is, I think that one's like 22 bucks.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: It's like$20, 22 bucks.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: Um, but then yeah, but then there's nymph nectar.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: I don't know, like, yeah, no, I they are there are best sellers.
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: I'm just like trying to think through it now.
- 34:54SPEAKER_02: And like nymph nectar, again, that's like definitely a multi-use bomb, but I feel like most people that I've talked to prefer that as a nighttime mask.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: So um, and that one is now one ounce for like$36.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, like I think masks are still still in, you know, things ebb and flow, right?
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: Like for popularity, and you know, there's always things that like float around too about like uh I'm just trying to think, like essential oils, like you know, that's like a hot topic now, and like like they're proven for certain skin types to actually still be like efficacious, even sensitive skin, but maybe not like the most and you know, extremely sensitive skin.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: Just yeah, but things things come in and out, and you know, I think you just have to stick to what you know science continually tells you, and um, but then face masks are great.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: I that I just like jumped again, but but yeah, yeah, no, I I I agree, I completely agree, and I think that you know, I I want to see you come out with like an overnight face mask, honestly, because I love them, and I can honestly tell you, like, I like for me, masks it the way I look at it is obviously it's like a scientist approach, right?
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: So I think of a petri dish, and I'm like, well, the top layer of my skin is a bunch of dead cells, so let me just put them in like a petri dish full of nutrients, you know.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: So that's how I see face masks.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: I'm like, it's just a bunch of stuff.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I love it.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Um, I wanna, I you know, I I I wanna actually close off the conversation and I wanna um just mention to everyone listening that you know, um Ali's range of products is it's it's extraordinary, you know, there's something for everyone here.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: And I really mean that.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, you've got you've got resurfacing serums, you've got masks like we just talked about, you've got hydration products, you know, and it it's I love that.
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: And I love that it's a line that everyone can really go to and get something from.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: And I that's very, very rare to see in this industry.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: You hit it, you hit it, yeah, right there.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: You pierced it into the soul.
- 37:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's it's that's so much of like what I was after with Earth Harbor and continue to be.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: Like you just summed that up so nicely, and it always amazes me how many different walks of life and how many different skin types and different like like lifestyles that I I just hear the best feedback from for our entire line.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, it's just yeah, it really is.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: It's it's just creates um, it was created with like a breadth of people in mind, and to really be able to accomplish that, like I'm like very grateful that um that that's really come to fruition.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: And you've done such a beautiful job.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: And by the way, my favorite name of all of your products is mermaid milk.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: No mermaids harmed or milked in the process, right?
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, I love it.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: But yes, I gotta say, that's probably mine too.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: I'm like such a sucker for alliteration, too, if you couldn't tell from my.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: Well, he did have a house in Key West, Florida, so there you go.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: Well, see, there you go.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, and it reminds me of that.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: It's like the craziest things.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: Like when I see like products, like it's so weird.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: Like, it reminds me of the weirdest little like things I want to do or that like you know, I've imagined myself doing.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: And so, yeah, like your line is just it's beautiful.
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: And it really's crazy that you say that because um of what we were just talking about, you know, since the beginning and a very circular conversation here.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: Um, and that, you know, journaling and like I actually have always gone had such a love of writing that you saying that just like like enlightened me.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: I was like, wow, like that's something else that's come out of this line.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: Like I didn't even realize that, but it is I love writing, I love wordsmithing.
- 39:15SPEAKER_02: Um, I might not in person, like right now, be like loquacious and know exactly what to say, but I am a definite wordsmith, like when it comes to writing.
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: And so interesting that you picked up on that.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: Like it's like subconscious for me, like I that I never even thought of on a conscious level.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: I think of how, yeah, that's that's come out in our packaging and branding and you know, all that good stuff.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: No, it definitely does.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: And the word, you know, the the wording you've chosen for all of your products is just you know, like siren silk, you know, and it's it's beautiful, like it's just beautiful.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: Like it's just when you say it, you're like, oh my god, yes, please put that on my skin.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: Like so.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: So yeah, yeah, I can definitely see the wordsmith aspect.
- 39:57SPEAKER_01: I can definitely see that your writing, um, you know, that writing is a part of your life, and and I love it.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: And so, yeah, I just want to thank you so much, Allie.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: This has been so lovely chatting with you.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: You're so like you know, awesome.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: And I love I I want to invite you back anytime you have the time because I would love to chat again.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: Um about this.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: Time is is a crazy thing right now.
- 40:18SPEAKER_02: I just I I'm and I think part of this too, I gotta lay out there is that I I call it newborn brain, like pregnant pregnancy brain's a thing, but I swear newborn brain is too.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: And like I just had like my third kid like four months ago now.
