- 0:50Speaker 2: course have some fun along the way. For episode to twelve,
- 0:56Speaker 2: I am chatting with Kaisa Karenin.
- 0:59Speaker 3: She is a fitness a.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Coach, co founder of Just Move, and known to her
- 1:04Speaker 2: more than a million followers on Instagram as Kaisa Fit.
- 1:10Speaker 2: You know, I feel like I've been following Kaisa for
- 1:12Speaker 2: a really really long time now, and I am always
- 1:16Speaker 2: astounded at both her positivity and also her dedication to
- 1:21Speaker 2: her mission, which she talks about in today's episode is
- 1:25Speaker 2: literally just encouraging people to move and meet themselves with
- 1:29Speaker 2: where they're at now. If you listen to the show,
- 1:31Speaker 2: you know that that is definitely something that I can
- 1:34Speaker 2: get behind. In today's episode, Kaisa talks to me about
- 1:38Speaker 2: her foundations playing soccer and running track growing up and
- 1:43Speaker 2: navigating a battle with depression which she only recently opened
- 1:49Speaker 2: up to her family about and then her community. The
- 1:53Speaker 2: Seattle based wellness expert talks to me today about a
- 1:57Speaker 2: whole bunch of things, from the moment that she knew
- 2:00Speaker 2: that she wanted to dedicate her life's work to encouraging
- 2:03Speaker 2: others to move, to the hard times that she faced
- 2:07Speaker 2: during the pandemic only recently, she confesses coming back out
- 2:12Speaker 2: of a really difficult time, something that I think a
- 2:15Speaker 2: lot of people will be able to relate to When
- 2:18Speaker 2: listening to this convo, Kaisa opens up about what her
- 2:21Speaker 2: priorities are right now in terms of her movement practice,
- 2:24Speaker 2: as well as how she takes care of herself, what
- 2:26Speaker 2: her self care's routine looks like, and we talk about fueling,
- 2:30Speaker 2: what she puts in her body, what she focuses on,
- 2:33Speaker 2: plus what she's excited about coming down the pipe. Loved
- 2:37Speaker 2: this conversation. We talk about how it's been a super
- 2:39Speaker 2: long time coming, years in the making. In fact, I'm
- 2:42Speaker 2: happy that we're able to connect and finally make it happen.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Make sure, as always.
- 2:47Speaker 2: That you are following along with Hurdle over on social media.
- 2:50Speaker 2: It is over at Hurdle Podcast. I myself over at
- 2:53Speaker 2: Emily a Body and for those of you that may
- 2:56Speaker 2: be in Eugene organ for the World Athletic champions later
- 3:00Speaker 2: this week, I am getting my bags packed, getting my
- 3:03Speaker 2: act together, and I'll be out there as well.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I listed all the details.
- 3:07Speaker 2: What I've got going on out in Oregon in last
- 3:10Speaker 2: week's edition of the Weekly Hurdle newsletter.
- 3:12Speaker 3: If you're out of the loop, get in it.
- 3:14Speaker 2: The Weekly Hurdle is so much of the same stuff
- 3:17Speaker 2: that you love about the show, motivation and gear picks,
- 3:20Speaker 2: stories from me, listener questions, Hurdler spotlights, et cetera in
- 3:25Speaker 2: your inbox every single Friday morning, and you can subscribe
- 3:28Speaker 2: for free.
- 3:28Speaker 3: The link to do.
- 3:29Speaker 2: That is in the show notes. I think that's it
- 3:34Speaker 2: for now. If you haven't yet rate and review the
- 3:36Speaker 2: podcast in Apple Podcasts or wherever you are listening to this,
- 3:41Speaker 2: And with that, let's get to Hurdling. Today, I am
- 4:03Speaker 2: sitting down with Kaisakuran and that she told me not
- 4:06Speaker 2: to say her last name.
- 4:07Speaker 3: But I feel like you get both.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I mean, I like the Oprah vibes you're giving me
- 4:11Speaker 2: with just the first name Basis.
- 4:13Speaker 3: I didn't even intentionally do that.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I just my I am looking out for you because
- 4:17Speaker 1: the name is so hard to say that, I'm like,
- 4:19Speaker 1: just skip it.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Don't worry about it.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Girl, I get it. My last name is a body.
- 4:23Speaker 2: I've heard a bata, a bait a baby. I'm just like,
- 4:26Speaker 2: it's cool. Whatever works for you works for me.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yeah. I'm kind of with that too. I don't even
- 4:30Speaker 3: correct people anymore.
- 4:31Speaker 2: So, well, welcome to the show. I'm so happy to
- 4:35Speaker 2: have you here. I feel like this has been a
- 4:36Speaker 2: long time coming. I don't know if you remember this.
- 4:38Speaker 3: You might not. I'm gonna tell you though.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Right before the pandemic, I was going to come to
- 4:45Speaker 2: Seattle as part of like a crazy like tour I
- 4:49Speaker 2: was doing with Hurdle and we were going to link
- 4:52Speaker 2: and I had to cancel this trip, like I think
- 4:53Speaker 2: I was.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Supposed to be there on March sixteenth.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Okay, when I got the email that I was. I
- 5:00Speaker 1: was like, I know her from something somewhere at some
- 5:04Speaker 1: point in time. But that's also the story of my
- 5:07Speaker 1: life where I'm like, Guisie, you don't actually know that person,
- 5:09Speaker 1: you just know them from social so you're not all.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Well, here we are two and a half years later. Wow,
- 5:17Speaker 3: meant to be.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'm really excited for this conversation, so thank you for
- 5:20Speaker 1: having me.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Of course, so happy to have you.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I'm sure in the intro the hurdlers will know this
- 5:26Speaker 2: about you by now, but you are the co founder
- 5:29Speaker 2: of just Move, a personal trainer. You've got your MS
- 5:31Speaker 2: and exercise science. You're all about the beauty of us
- 5:36Speaker 2: moving our bodies. Yes, hashtag just move, hashtag just move.
- 5:42Speaker 2: So something to kick us off here. I see you
- 5:45Speaker 2: sitting here with this pretty microphone. You've been getting into
- 5:48Speaker 2: the podcast game. How does that feel for you?
- 5:50Speaker 3: And I don't.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I am not getting into the podcast game. Okay, let
- 5:53Speaker 1: me just say that I'm trying to dip my toes.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I am trying to talk more. I think what I've
- 5:58Speaker 1: curated on social media is an image of a woman
- 6:02Speaker 1: that does crazy workouts, but there's so much more behind that.
- 6:06Speaker 1: And if I don't talk about my why, then nobody
- 6:09Speaker 1: gets to know why. And so I think, you know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: having a podcast now and starting to open up a
- 6:14Speaker 1: bit more has been the goal.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Really very slowly.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I get it, and you know, regardless of how people
- 6:23Speaker 2: are creating, it is so impressive for anyone to be
- 6:28Speaker 2: making content as regularly as you have gotten it down.
- 6:33Speaker 2: So to see you branch out beyond the really informational
- 6:39Speaker 2: and super expertly crafted stuff that you already have going
- 6:43Speaker 2: on and like dip your toe in this new vertical,
- 6:46Speaker 2: there's something to be said for that.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Thank you. I actually really appreciate that because I think
- 6:50Speaker 1: a lot of times people think social media one like
- 6:53Speaker 1: it's not a real job, or two like you just
- 6:55Speaker 1: film stuff and put it up.
- 6:56Speaker 3: I'm like those videos that.
- 6:57Speaker 1: You see take me like two hours to edit, so
- 7:01Speaker 1: like there's so much work that goes.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Into making this all happen, but also like the programming
- 7:06Speaker 2: that goes into the video before you even go to
- 7:09Speaker 2: shoot the video. So to give some more context into
- 7:13Speaker 2: what you do, Now, why don't we start there and
- 7:16Speaker 2: then we'll rewind it back to talking about that why
- 7:19Speaker 2: that you said is so important, So talk to us
- 7:21Speaker 2: a little bit about what you're working on now and
- 7:25Speaker 2: what maybe your day to day looks like.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Yeah, so no day to day is the same, but
- 7:29Speaker 1: the overall, the biggest project that I'm working on is
- 7:31Speaker 1: just Move, which is our platform that has movement for
- 7:35Speaker 1: everybody and everybody, so we have anything from someone who
- 7:38Speaker 1: is just starting their movement journey to advance movers and
- 7:41Speaker 1: it's all in the just Move platform.
- 7:43Speaker 3: So that was always my dream and so to be.
- 7:46Speaker 1: In this space where it's actually happening and that's what
- 7:48Speaker 1: I'm working towards every single day is amazing. And then
- 7:52Speaker 1: where a lot of people see me as on social media,
- 7:55Speaker 1: so you'll see a lot of my day to day
- 7:57Speaker 1: in terms of the workouts that I'm doing and just
- 7:59Speaker 1: like a day in the life of me on social
- 8:01Speaker 1: But the work is always being done to build Just Move.
- 8:05Speaker 3: That's really the big goal. Got it? Got it?
- 8:08Speaker 2: And so for you when it comes to your programming,
- 8:11Speaker 2: how are you focusing your training these days? Like what
- 8:15Speaker 2: is maybe your main focus when it comes to you
- 8:17Speaker 2: and your body.
- 8:18Speaker 1: My main focus these days is one to feel so
- 8:24Speaker 1: good in my body because, as we all did, we
- 8:26Speaker 1: went through a pandemic and I just felt so disconnected
- 8:29Speaker 1: to my body for you know, two and a half years.
- 8:31Speaker 1: So number one, just feel so damn good in my body,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and then two, just to feel like the most badass
- 8:37Speaker 1: version of myself. I'm training like a hardcore athlete right
- 8:41Speaker 1: now because one, that's just what makes me feel good
- 8:44Speaker 1: and it's what I enjoy the most. So for the
- 8:47Speaker 1: past four months, that's what my training has entailed. And
- 8:50Speaker 1: I feel great and I'm loving it. And that's the
- 8:52Speaker 1: season I'm in. I know seasons we ebb and flow,
- 8:55Speaker 1: and I'm just really embracing a season of just feeling
- 8:58Speaker 1: like a badass and training like one.
- 9:00Speaker 2: So you haven't always been stringing together like broad jump
- 9:03Speaker 2: after broad jump after broad jump and really speedy fast
- 9:07Speaker 2: fashion and people are like, how the hell do you
- 9:08Speaker 2: do that?
- 9:09Speaker 3: You haven't always been able to perform like this.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Talk to me a little bit about what movement was
- 9:14Speaker 2: like for you from a young age.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Oh, Emily, well, one, thanks for watching that Instagram video.
- 9:20Speaker 3: I appreciate that. So movement for me at a young
- 9:24Speaker 3: age started.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Okay, We're going to go all the way back because
- 9:27Speaker 1: I do like I feel like it pairs two things together,
- 9:30Speaker 1: which is my obsession with shoes and my love for movement.
- 9:33Speaker 1: So it all started when my mom put me in
- 9:36Speaker 1: a race at Norstrom and I want a pair of
- 9:38Speaker 1: shoes by crawling and I wasn't even.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Able to crawl.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I pull I like Army crawled, pulled myself across I
- 9:45Speaker 1: want a pair of Nike shoes, and that was my
- 9:47Speaker 1: first race, and then from there I had a lot
- 9:50Speaker 1: of energy as a kid I still do as an adult,
- 9:52Speaker 1: and my mom just had me in all types of movement,
- 9:55Speaker 1: but I never committed to a specific type of movement
- 10:00Speaker 1: until my eighth grade year when I committed to soccer,
- 10:03Speaker 1: and then I was on a club team and then
- 10:04Speaker 1: that really became my sport. Coincidentally, I did track in
- 10:08Speaker 1: college because I ended up wanting to go to Division
- 10:11Speaker 1: one instead of Division two, which was my soccer opportunity,
- 10:14Speaker 1: and then from there I became a trainer. So I've
- 10:16Speaker 1: always been about movement in some way, shape or form,
- 10:19Speaker 1: because it's always been the thing that helps me connect
- 10:22Speaker 1: back to myself and ultimately take care of myself.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Very important. But taking care of yourself, especially in high school,
- 10:30Speaker 2: took out a whole new meaning when you had to
- 10:34Speaker 2: work your way through some anxiety, a little bit of
- 10:38Speaker 2: mental health troubles.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Talk to us about that.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yeah, so I wouldn't say a little bit. It was
- 10:43Speaker 1: a lot of mental health. And I realized, I don't
- 10:46Speaker 1: talk about this enough, but I deal with As much
- 10:48Speaker 1: as I work on my physical health, I'm working on
- 10:51Speaker 1: my mental health. I mean, I've seen therapists for many,
- 10:55Speaker 1: many years. I constantly value where my mental state is
- 10:58Speaker 1: at because my mental health is really important to me.
- 11:01Speaker 1: And I am somebody who can tend to go into depression.
- 11:05Speaker 1: And I didn't recognize that until my freshman year in
- 11:08Speaker 1: high school, which was just it was a really difficult time.
- 11:12Speaker 1: There were so many things that were going on for me,
- 11:14Speaker 1: and so as I look back now, I know it
- 11:16Speaker 1: was you know, family life. It was going into from
- 11:18Speaker 1: a very tiny private school to a big high school,
- 11:21Speaker 1: not feeling like I fit in, not feeling like I
- 11:23Speaker 1: found my people, And so I definitely went through a
- 11:26Speaker 1: really deep dark time and ultimately contemplated leaving this earth.
- 11:31Speaker 3: And I ended up thinking.
- 11:33Speaker 1: To myself, which is crazy because as a freshman you
- 11:35Speaker 1: are twelve or thirteen, But I remember this moment like
- 11:38Speaker 1: it was yesterday, and I remember thinking because every single
- 11:40Speaker 1: day I would walk down to the park at the
- 11:42Speaker 1: bottom of my hill with my soccer ball and I
- 11:45Speaker 1: would just go spend some time there, and I remember thinking,
- 11:47Speaker 1: one day, I have to make a decision. I can't
- 11:50Speaker 1: keep being in this space and I have to decide
- 11:52Speaker 1: what I'm going to do. And if I'm going to
- 11:55Speaker 1: stay here, what is the one thing that's going to
- 11:57Speaker 1: kind of keep me anchored to this earth and that
- 12:00Speaker 1: movement And for me at that time, movement was soccer.
- 12:03Speaker 1: And so I was a freshman in high school, and
- 12:06Speaker 1: I that was the moment that I decided, like, I
- 12:07Speaker 1: want to stay on this earth, and I'm going to
- 12:09Speaker 1: dive straight into the one thing that makes me happy,
- 12:11Speaker 1: which was being a soccer player. And so I dedicated
- 12:15Speaker 1: my life for the next four years to soccer, and ultimately,
- 12:18Speaker 1: you know, that is the thing that saved my life.
- 12:20Speaker 1: And then it was also through that time that I realized,
- 12:22Speaker 1: like I, movement means everything to me, Like my love
- 12:27Speaker 1: for movement helps me connect to my body, helps me
- 12:29Speaker 1: work through very very difficult dark times, helps me have
- 12:33Speaker 1: fun and enjoy life. And so I think that's where
- 12:36Speaker 1: my deep appreciation for movement and for my body started
- 12:40Speaker 1: to develop.
- 12:41Speaker 2: I think that something that can be helpful for a
- 12:44Speaker 2: lot of individuals is when someone kind of paints the
- 12:49Speaker 2: picture of what their personal depression looked like. So would
- 12:54Speaker 2: you mind maybe talking a little bit about what that
- 12:57Speaker 2: looked like for you.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Yeah, My personal depression at the time when I was
- 13:05Speaker 1: a freshman looked like severe anxiety. Like working up to
- 13:10Speaker 1: going to school every morning was like like going to battle.
- 13:16Speaker 3: Having to prep. I just having to prep.
- 13:19Speaker 1: What I would do when I didn't have something to do,
- 13:21Speaker 1: like lunch breaks caused me a ton of anxiety. I
- 13:25Speaker 1: would make up things to do or pretend like I
- 13:27Speaker 1: had to go run an errand and go walk to
- 13:29Speaker 1: a store. Like it was constantly having to think about
- 13:33Speaker 1: what I'm gonna do day to day, step to step
- 13:36Speaker 1: in my life to distract myself. And so I was
- 13:39Speaker 1: very goal oriented. I mean I always have been, but
- 13:42Speaker 1: I was goal oriented in like, Okay, lunch is at
- 13:44Speaker 1: eleven forty five, you're gonna walk to Bartel Drugs. You're
- 13:46Speaker 1: gonna pretend like you have to get this. Lunch ends
- 13:49Speaker 1: at twelve thirty, you're gonna Like. That's where it was
- 13:51Speaker 1: for me. And it was constantly a deep dark place
- 13:55Speaker 1: like there was no I couldn't see an out to
- 13:58Speaker 1: anything that I was doing. And I think because my
- 14:02Speaker 1: own the only time that I hadn't out was soccer,
- 14:05Speaker 1: that I knew that there was some escape at some
- 14:07Speaker 1: like things would get better at some point in time,
- 14:09Speaker 1: if there was one moment in my life where things
- 14:11Speaker 1: were better, and I just had to keep going towards
- 14:13Speaker 1: that and doing it more and more. I mean I
- 14:16Speaker 1: was someone who spent hours upon hours. I mean from
- 14:20Speaker 1: the outside world, everybody felt like this girl is so
- 14:23Speaker 1: dedicated at thirteen years old. I mean she's out at
- 14:25Speaker 1: the soccer field for like two to three hours. You know,
- 14:28Speaker 1: she's on the weekends. She doesn't go anywhere or do anything.
- 14:30Speaker 1: She's playing soccer, she's practicing, she's training. I was a
- 14:33Speaker 1: thirteen year old that was like out running stairs and
- 14:36Speaker 1: getting it, you know, like working on things that I
- 14:39Speaker 1: wish someone would have looked at and said like this
- 14:41Speaker 1: isn't this, this isn't this isn't normal, and this isn't okay.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Did you talk to anybody about how you felt? No?
- 14:48Speaker 1: Never, never. Wow, I didn't tell my mom, who I
- 14:52Speaker 1: was really close to. I never told her until NASM
- 14:56Speaker 1: about four or five years ago, asked me to do
- 14:59Speaker 1: the keynote, and I was going to tell my story
- 15:02Speaker 1: to my peers for the first time. And a huge
- 15:05Speaker 1: piece of the story is why I'm so in why
- 15:07Speaker 1: I'm so obsessed with movement is because it saved my life.
- 15:09Speaker 1: And my mom was going to be there, and so
- 15:11Speaker 1: I had to tell her my story before she heard.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Me tell it live. Yeah.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Wow, And that must have been like such an interesting
- 15:19Speaker 2: and introspective moment for her, uh, you know, with the
- 15:22Speaker 2: questions that she had for herself.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Where was I What was I paying attention to?
- 15:27Speaker 2: And I can sympathize as someone who's been on both
- 15:30Speaker 2: sides of the coin, feeling as though you wish that
- 15:33Speaker 2: you could have been there for someone who was struggling,
- 15:36Speaker 2: but without knowing, without establishing you know, that open communication,
- 15:41Speaker 2: it can just be really hard all around. Yeah.
- 15:44Speaker 1: And I always say to my mom, my mom, there
- 15:45Speaker 1: were four of us siblings, you know, like, and my
- 15:47Speaker 1: mom was a very young parent and she was trying
- 15:49Speaker 1: to survive. And so I also hid it, like I
- 15:53Speaker 1: hid everything that I was doing and massed it with perfectionism,
- 15:57Speaker 1: Like I worked my ass off as a student, you know,
- 16:00Speaker 1: as an athlete. I don't think. I think you could
- 16:03Speaker 1: have tried to be aware that I was doing a lot. Maybe,
- 16:06Speaker 1: but I don't think I didn't have the quote unquote
- 16:09Speaker 1: typical symptoms of depression. And now we know there aren't
- 16:11Speaker 1: any typical symptoms. But I don't know that you would
- 16:14Speaker 1: have ever known.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Yeah, So for you, as you graduate high school, you
- 16:20Speaker 2: go on to college, did you think that you would
- 16:25Speaker 2: become a professional athlete?
- 16:27Speaker 3: Did you think that you were going to go pro? Okay, yes, Emily,
- 16:30Speaker 3: But I don't even know.
- 16:31Speaker 1: When I look back, I'm like, cause, what, like, what
- 16:34Speaker 1: did that mean for you?
- 16:36Speaker 3: Because what did that mean for you? I don't know.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I just never saw my life beyond athletics. I never
- 16:46Speaker 1: saw my life past college.
- 16:48Speaker 3: All I ever.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Wanted from the moment that I realized I could play
- 16:52Speaker 1: sports in college was to play sports in college. And
- 16:56Speaker 1: then apparently like life ended after that. I never thought
- 16:59Speaker 1: beyond that. And so and then what professional would mean.
- 17:03Speaker 1: At the time, I don't know that I was, you know,
- 17:05Speaker 1: a track athlete or a soccer player and getting paid
- 17:08Speaker 1: to train.
- 17:09Speaker 3: I don't know. I was so young. No, and what
- 17:13Speaker 3: track are you running? Process? I was doing the heptathlon.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Okay, wow, see out of the box event there, yes,
- 17:21Speaker 2: almost see.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Yeah, everything about my life is out of the box.
- 17:24Speaker 1: So the story is really that I Soccer was the
- 17:27Speaker 1: sport that I that I gravitated towards and I loved
- 17:29Speaker 1: because I really loved being around a team. But I
- 17:32Speaker 1: ended up being better in track, and so I had
- 17:35Speaker 1: an option for D two soccer or D one track
- 17:38Speaker 1: and you know, ego at eighteen, I wanted to go division.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Once I went to the University of Washington and did
- 17:44Speaker 1: the heptathlon.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Wow, wow, favorite part of the heptathlon.
- 17:50Speaker 3: The javelin by far and away. Wow, that is.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Not I don't know if we've ever had anyone on
- 17:56Speaker 2: the show who considered themselves a good javlin thrower.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Yeah, qull it happened to be pretty much my best event.
- 18:04Speaker 1: But the javelin. The way that the scoring works, you
- 18:07Speaker 1: get points for each event, but the javelin is an
- 18:10Speaker 1: event that you get a lot of points in, so
- 18:12Speaker 1: it you know, it didn't really work out your favors
- 18:14Speaker 1: absolutely shirks.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Okay, So I mean, after being a stellar heptathlete at
- 18:19Speaker 2: the University of Washington, then where does your mind go?
- 18:22Speaker 2: Because you are thinking, okay, like I'd love to play pro,
- 18:27Speaker 2: but like, did you think that you were going to
- 18:28Speaker 2: start training to go to the Olympics and do like
- 18:31Speaker 2: at that point, who knows to kathlon? No?
- 18:34Speaker 1: Okay, well, correction, Emily, I was not stellar. This is
- 18:38Speaker 1: where this is where the whole thing takes a turn.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Like Kaisa, you have gotten here, You've worked your ass
- 18:46Speaker 1: off to get here, you think you're going pro, you
- 18:48Speaker 1: think this is the rest of your life, and you're
- 18:50Speaker 1: just broken like I wasn't. I wasn't good because I
- 18:54Speaker 1: was broken every single year overtraining to the max. I mean,
- 18:59Speaker 1: I had never ever lifted a weight until I went
- 19:02Speaker 1: to college. And when you go to Division one, when
- 19:04Speaker 1: you go to college, but when you go to Division one,
- 19:06Speaker 1: they don't necessarily care about you a lot as an individual.
- 19:10Speaker 3: You just are part of the masses.
- 19:11Speaker 1: So there was not a lot of like detailed oriented
- 19:15Speaker 1: programming towards Kaisa. It was fit in with the masses.
- 19:19Speaker 1: So I was broken every single year. So when I
- 19:22Speaker 1: graduated from college, I just had this moment of knowing
- 19:25Speaker 1: how much movement meant to me and knowing that I
- 19:27Speaker 1: needed to be able to move for the rest of
- 19:29Speaker 1: my life. There was no way I could be twenty
- 19:30Speaker 1: three and broken and injured and in pain and not
- 19:34Speaker 1: being able to move.
- 19:35Speaker 3: And so I went to go.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I got certified as a trainer, but not the train
- 19:40Speaker 1: I never had any intention of training individuals. And I
- 19:42Speaker 1: know this is crazy, Like when you look at it now,
- 19:45Speaker 1: I'm like, Kaisa, how did you not think that the
- 19:47Speaker 1: thing that you loved so much you wanted to do?
- 19:51Speaker 3: I didn't put all of that together.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I mean one also in my depression, like I think
- 19:55Speaker 1: a lot of me is just trying to survive and
- 19:57Speaker 1: put one step in front of the next. Right I
- 20:00Speaker 1: knew was that I wanted to become a social worker.
- 20:03Speaker 1: So I did know deep down that I did want
- 20:05Speaker 1: to work with humans. And so to carry on with
- 20:07Speaker 1: this story, the reason I'm a trainer now is because
- 20:09Speaker 1: I was nanning at the time, getting ready to go
- 20:11Speaker 1: back to school to get my master's in social work.
- 20:15Speaker 1: And the woman that I was nanning for said, can
- 20:17Speaker 1: you since you're becoming a trainer, can you come run
- 20:19Speaker 1: a boot camp? And I was like, Leslie, I'm not
- 20:21Speaker 1: becoming a trainer. I'm just learning about my body right now.
- 20:24Speaker 1: So no, and all somethher long, she asked me, and
- 20:26Speaker 1: finally I said yes. At the end of the summer,
- 20:28Speaker 1: and I coached one boot camp with probably like five
- 20:32Speaker 1: of her friend's. Best moment of my life. It was like,
- 20:35Speaker 1: you know, the sun was just shining down and it
- 20:38Speaker 1: like made me so aware of what I wanted to
- 20:40Speaker 1: do for the.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Rest of my life. But that's what I knew.
- 20:42Speaker 1: I wanted to be a trainer, and that's when I
- 20:44Speaker 1: knew I wanted to bring movement to the masses.
- 20:46Speaker 2: How did you even know like about what formatting or
- 20:49Speaker 2: whatever the hell you wanted to do with this group
- 20:52Speaker 2: of five six women.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Emily, I didn't, okay. I was like, Guisa, just make
- 20:56Speaker 1: it through. I have now recently been diagnosed with like anxiety,
- 21:02Speaker 1: and so now I know that like all of the
- 21:04Speaker 1: preparation for everything and all these stories that I tell myself,
- 21:08Speaker 1: like I'm like, okay, well now I can like attribute
- 21:10Speaker 1: it back. But I probably didn't sleep for like a week,
- 21:12Speaker 1: like I was trying to do everything perfect. I was
- 21:13Speaker 1: probably at the time there was no social media, so
- 21:16Speaker 1: I was probably looking at like every YouTube boot camp
- 21:18Speaker 1: video to figure out like how do you have them
- 21:20Speaker 1: move and how do you have them work out? But
- 21:22Speaker 1: I did know it was a group of like thirty
- 21:25Speaker 1: to four year old women, and I just wanted them
- 21:26Speaker 1: to have fun with movement, Like I've always had that
- 21:29Speaker 1: in me that I just want people to have a fun,
- 21:31Speaker 1: good experience. And so somehow we made it through and
- 21:34Speaker 1: they had a good time. And I ran that boot
- 21:37Speaker 1: camp at Green Lake for Pro for months for a
- 21:40Speaker 1: long time until I decided to commit to an actual
- 21:42Speaker 1: gym and be a trainer.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Wow.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Okay, so you commit to being an actual trainer at
- 21:47Speaker 2: a gym, and how do you feel about some of
- 21:50Speaker 2: the rigidity that came with that.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I mean, looking back, it's all one big it's like
- 21:55Speaker 3: all hilarious.
- 21:56Speaker 1: So I became a trainer at a gym and I
- 21:58Speaker 1: was so excited to help encourage people to move, and
- 22:03Speaker 1: time and time again, every single client that came in
- 22:05Speaker 1: for a consultation was.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Here to lose weight.
- 22:08Speaker 1: And so I was like, oh, wow, Okay, I guess
- 22:11Speaker 1: I'm not the trainer for you, but you can go
- 22:12Speaker 1: train with them or train with them, and I'm like
- 22:14Speaker 1: waiting for the client that comes through and is like
- 22:16Speaker 1: I'm so excited to learn how like you know, be
- 22:19Speaker 1: a better version of myself or learn how to squad
- 22:21Speaker 1: and do push ups. Well, months and months go by
- 22:24Speaker 1: and I have no clients, so I had to have
- 22:27Speaker 1: like a reevaluation of there are so many people. The
- 22:31Speaker 1: majority of people that come into movement is because they
- 22:34Speaker 1: want to change the way that they look, and if
- 22:37Speaker 1: I discourage that or don't meet them where they're at,
- 22:41Speaker 1: then I'm not doing my part. And so I decided
- 22:44Speaker 1: to not okay and not co sign the message that
- 22:47Speaker 1: they were initially coming in with, but just not discourage it.
- 22:50Speaker 1: So I started to pull clients in. I started to
- 22:53Speaker 1: create really really fun and encouraging programs for them to do,
- 22:57Speaker 1: and I would allow them to tell their own stories,
- 22:59Speaker 1: but I would never co sign it. And then six
- 23:02Speaker 1: years later I had formatted and created my own business
- 23:05Speaker 1: all around performance training, and it was mainly middle aged
- 23:08Speaker 1: women and it was incredible.
- 23:11Speaker 2: So, like ten years ago, women in performance training, like
- 23:15Speaker 2: ten years ago is like kind of the beginning of
- 23:17Speaker 2: the middle of the CrossFit phase. It's like, there aren't
- 23:20Speaker 2: a ton of women that we're seeing in conventional media
- 23:25Speaker 2: that are doing explosive movements, that are lifting barbells, that
- 23:29Speaker 2: kind of stuff. So you were really a little bit
- 23:32Speaker 2: ahead of feeling as though like this is like something
- 23:35Speaker 2: that we all need.
- 23:36Speaker 3: To be doing.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Yes, And thank you for saying that, because I do
- 23:39Speaker 1: think it's important to note. And this was even before CrossFit,
- 23:42Speaker 1: because there was no social media. Crossbit was around, but
- 23:44Speaker 1: it wasn't. It wasn't blown up the way that it's
- 23:46Speaker 1: very different. Yeah, and they're the only thing that I
- 23:49Speaker 1: saw was Jillian Michaels on The Biggest Loser because the
- 23:52Speaker 1: only platform for fitness and movement was TV and that
- 23:56Speaker 1: was the only show. And so and I just knew
- 23:58Speaker 1: absolutely no, not to Jillian because she has done her thing,
- 24:01Speaker 1: but I just knew that wasn't That wasn't my message,
- 24:05Speaker 1: and that wasn't what I wanted to do, and that
- 24:06Speaker 1: wasn't how I wanted to encourage people to move. And
- 24:10Speaker 1: because I had always had an experience of being proud
- 24:12Speaker 1: of what my body was physically doing as an athlete,
- 24:16Speaker 1: I wanted to start bringing that to other people, and
- 24:19Speaker 1: really to women. I just I loved training women and
- 24:22Speaker 1: having them come in and think that they were not
- 24:25Speaker 1: capable of doing anything in their body, and then starting
- 24:28Speaker 1: to train and starting to get them to squad and
- 24:30Speaker 1: lift weight and do a push up, and you know,
- 24:32Speaker 1: like it was just the most incredible experience to witness
- 24:37Speaker 1: them start to just really appreciate their body and become
- 24:40Speaker 1: empowered in their body.
- 24:42Speaker 2: So when then do you make a little bit of
- 24:45Speaker 2: the transition over to putting some of your programming and
- 24:49Speaker 2: getting more involved in social media.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Well, so I took a little detour. So I was
- 24:55Speaker 3: running my own business.
- 24:56Speaker 1: I was having a great time, but my depression came
- 24:59Speaker 1: in again, like really intensely. I was overworked. So from
- 25:03Speaker 1: the outside like very successful, but I was overworked. I
- 25:05Speaker 1: was extremely tired, and I had no energy to do
- 25:08Speaker 1: anything except for to get to the training sessions. And
- 25:12Speaker 1: so at that time, I thought like, Okay, I still
- 25:15Speaker 1: want to be in this world, but maybe this isn't
- 25:17Speaker 1: the spark that I want.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Maybe I'm missing something.
- 25:19Speaker 1: And so that's when I went back to school and
- 25:21Speaker 1: decided to get my master's in sports performance because I thought, Okay,
- 25:24Speaker 1: the thing that's gonna, you know, bring you back to
- 25:26Speaker 1: life is going to be training athletes. Day one of
- 25:31Speaker 1: my internship, so I had to quit. I put my
- 25:34Speaker 1: entire business on hold to go back into an unpaid
- 25:37Speaker 1: internship and to take out a loan for like sixty
- 25:40Speaker 1: or seventy grand to go back to my master's program.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Day one in the internship, I'm like, oh shit, like
- 25:48Speaker 1: what did I just do? I don't think this is
- 25:51Speaker 1: the right thing. So slowly, over time I had an
- 25:54Speaker 1: incredible experience, because not every choice in life takes you
- 25:58Speaker 1: to the next perfect step. I think sometimes a backward
- 26:01Speaker 1: step is also an actual forward step, and so I
- 26:04Speaker 1: just recognized, like it showed me so much, how it
- 26:07Speaker 1: showed me how much I loved training general population, and
- 26:10Speaker 1: how much I loved training all the women that I
- 26:12Speaker 1: was training, and how much I loved encouraging them to
- 26:15Speaker 1: start moving.
- 26:17Speaker 3: And so it solidified that.
- 26:18Speaker 1: But I went through the whole program, got my master's
- 26:20Speaker 1: in sports performance, and then social media started coming around
- 26:24Speaker 1: at the time, and a friend wanted to be on
- 26:27Speaker 1: the cover of a magazine and we were already training together,
- 26:29Speaker 1: and she was like, well, you start creating content with me,
- 26:31Speaker 1: and so.
- 26:32Speaker 2: We did you make it sound like so effortless. It's like,
- 26:35Speaker 2: so we did at the beginning, knowing your background, and
- 26:39Speaker 2: you articulated it this way of perfectionism. How did you
- 26:43Speaker 2: feel about creating content from the get go awful.
- 26:48Speaker 1: I did not want I was I didn't want to
- 26:50Speaker 1: be on social media. I didn't want people to see me.
- 26:52Speaker 1: I liked to live my life behind the curtains. I
- 26:57Speaker 1: wanted nothing to do with it because I didn't I
- 27:00Speaker 1: think because I couldn't vocalize at the time. But the
- 27:01Speaker 1: fear of judgment and criticism was I was putting myself
- 27:05Speaker 1: on display for that. But my friend at the time
- 27:08Speaker 1: wanted the cover of a magazine so bad, and I
- 27:10Speaker 1: was like, Okay, if this is what you want, Like,
- 27:12Speaker 1: if this is what you want to do, I will
- 27:14Speaker 1: show up and I will do this for you. In
- 27:16Speaker 1: the back of my mind, I've also always loved business,
- 27:19Speaker 1: so when we started creating content really quickly, I was
- 27:23Speaker 1: seeing like, okay, one, this is the way that you
- 27:26Speaker 1: speak to the masses. Because when we were on Instagram,
- 27:29Speaker 1: it wasn't big, it wasn't like this huge thing. We
- 27:31Speaker 1: were before the wave of Instagram. But I could see
- 27:34Speaker 1: right away that it wasn't just our friends and family
- 27:36Speaker 1: that were paying attention to what we're doing, Like this
- 27:38Speaker 1: was starting to grow and months in we had people
- 27:41Speaker 1: all around the world seeing what we were doing and
- 27:43Speaker 1: repeating our workouts, and so for me, I was like, oh, okay,
- 27:47Speaker 1: one my mission of getting the world to move, this
- 27:50Speaker 1: is going to be a huge factor in it. And
- 27:52Speaker 1: then two, like, this is becoming business. We were getting
- 27:55Speaker 1: approached by companies and that's when my light bulbs kind
- 27:58Speaker 1: of turned on. So and that's when I started having
- 28:01Speaker 1: really a lot of fun with it.
- 28:02Speaker 2: So, when you start to get approached by companies, what
- 28:05Speaker 2: did those conversations look like and where did you get
- 28:09Speaker 2: you articulated being really interested in the business side of things,
- 28:13Speaker 2: But did you have anyone that was a mentor for
- 28:15Speaker 2: you when it came to figuring out how to go
- 28:18Speaker 2: about establishing these relationships price costing, quoting, prices and whatever
- 28:23Speaker 2: comes with that.
- 28:24Speaker 1: No, And this is where I love talking to like
- 28:27Speaker 1: influencers now or people in this world now. I'm like,
- 28:29Speaker 1: it was literally a shot in the dark for every
- 28:32Speaker 1: single thing that we were doing. But it was a
- 28:34Speaker 1: shot in the dark for me, and it was a
- 28:35Speaker 1: shot in the dark for the companies as well. Because
- 28:37Speaker 1: social media was so new, nobody really knew how to
- 28:42Speaker 1: regulate anything, nobody knew what to charge for things, and
- 28:46Speaker 1: that ended up being a short lived So my friend
- 28:49Speaker 1: and I had started Two Bad Bodies that ended up
- 28:51Speaker 1: being short lived because she didn't really want it to
- 28:53Speaker 1: explode the way that it was, and I was loving it.
- 28:57Speaker 1: So we went our separate ways, and then I got
- 29:00Speaker 1: the taste of being able to do something and really
- 29:02Speaker 1: encourage the world to move and turn it possibly into
- 29:04Speaker 1: a business, and so the rest is history for me.
- 29:06Speaker 1: That's when kaisa fit started on social media and it
- 29:10Speaker 1: has been a roller coaster ride. It's really testing a
- 29:13Speaker 1: lot and seeing what works and figuring out what your
- 29:15Speaker 1: worth is. I have a good friend who's in the
- 29:18Speaker 1: business as well, and so he's helped me a lot
- 29:20Speaker 1: on you know what he charges for things, So it
- 29:22Speaker 1: was like we grew up together in this, but there
- 29:24Speaker 1: was there were no rules, there was no guidelines, there
- 29:26Speaker 1: was no you know, handbook to follow.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to talk to you
- 29:36Speaker 2: about my sponsor at Open. Open is a digital mindfulness
- 29:41Speaker 2: platform combining breathwork, meditation, and movement. It is also one
- 29:46Speaker 2: of my relatively new favorite parts of my morning routine. Now,
- 29:53Speaker 2: I'll be real, when someone used to talk to me
- 29:55Speaker 2: about breathwork before, I just felt a little bit like
- 29:58Speaker 2: this was never going to be something that was right
- 30:00Speaker 2: for me, and that really was until I tried Open.
- 30:06Speaker 2: In just three to five minutes a day, I am
- 30:09Speaker 2: able to find my colm using Open's super simple platform.
- 30:15Speaker 2: After doing breathwork in the morning, I feel now like
- 30:18Speaker 2: I sleep better, I stress less, and I have more
- 30:22Speaker 2: energy and focus throughout my day. I love that Open
- 30:26Speaker 2: meets me where I'm at in that they have options
- 30:28Speaker 2: that start at a short time period and get super
- 30:31Speaker 2: lengthy up to twenty or thirty minutes, so it's easy

- 31:05Speaker 2: That address to try Open today with Open dot Com
- 31:10Speaker 2: slash hurdle cnclass.
- 31:19Speaker 3: What would you say was the biggest challenge at first?
- 31:22Speaker 1: I mean, so many challenges. One the biggest misnomer is
- 31:26Speaker 1: that it worked right away. I put my entire business
- 31:30Speaker 1: in life on hold for a year and a half.
- 31:33Speaker 1: I created my own content every single day, So I
- 31:37Speaker 1: was working like eighty plus hours a week unpaid because
- 31:40Speaker 1: when we went our separate ways, I didn't have a
- 31:42Speaker 1: big enough platform for anybody to want to care or
- 31:45Speaker 1: pay me anything.
- 31:45Speaker 3: But I had a vision and a goal. I edited
- 31:48Speaker 3: my own content.
- 31:49Speaker 1: I created all of it, and that was all unpaid,
- 31:52Speaker 1: And that was all like not a lot of eyes
- 31:53Speaker 1: were on me. I go back and I look, and
- 31:55Speaker 1: I was so motivated, and like three people saw the video.
- 31:58Speaker 1: But like, so that was for me. My goal was
- 32:02Speaker 1: never to have the biggest following in the world. My
- 32:04Speaker 1: goal was always to be able to have a platform
- 32:07Speaker 1: that my message could reach more people. And because I
- 32:10Speaker 1: was so anchored to that, I was so motivated.
- 32:13Speaker 3: For so long.
- 32:15Speaker 1: When I got none of the reward, nothing was coming
- 32:17Speaker 1: back to me. I was just still out there every
- 32:19Speaker 1: single day asking people favors, like can you film this
- 32:22Speaker 1: for me?
- 32:23Speaker 3: Real quick? Like it was a hustle and it was
- 32:25Speaker 3: a grind. It was not glorious.
- 32:28Speaker 2: How did you get over the hurdle of becoming the
- 32:31Speaker 2: person in front of the camera. I would imagine this
- 32:35Speaker 2: also relating to this idea of having so many eyes
- 32:39Speaker 2: on you on social media these days, especially with over
- 32:43Speaker 2: a million followers, how have you dealt with maybe unsolicited
- 32:48Speaker 2: feedback or the just pressures that.
- 32:52Speaker 3: Can go with people having an opinion on your body.
- 32:54Speaker 3: So I'm going to take you back a little bit.
- 32:55Speaker 1: I think my entire life, I knew I had depression anxiety,
- 32:59Speaker 1: but it was not labeled, and so I had tactics
- 33:03Speaker 1: and skills to deal with things. Growing up, I was
- 33:05Speaker 1: known as a bitch just because I created a shell
- 33:08Speaker 1: that I wanted no one to approach me. I wanted
- 33:10Speaker 1: no one to talk to me. I wanted to just
- 33:12Speaker 1: go about and do my own thing because it was
- 33:13Speaker 1: so much anxiety about how I would show up, how
- 33:16Speaker 1: they would judge me, what would I say? And so
- 33:18Speaker 1: I literally like, that's what I was known for in
- 33:20Speaker 1: high school and in college, and so taking that in
- 33:24Speaker 1: a positive spin to it, when I went on social media,
- 33:26Speaker 1: I created an alter ego.
- 33:28Speaker 3: So kaisafit is my alter ego. It's like my Sosha fears.
- 33:31Speaker 1: And so she was something that I could like stand
- 33:34Speaker 1: behind and she was like the best.
- 33:36Speaker 3: She still today is the best version of myself.
- 33:39Speaker 1: I try to live up to be kais of fit
- 33:41Speaker 1: in all of my life, but she is the best
- 33:43Speaker 1: version of myself. So I think for me, I started
- 33:45Speaker 1: to learn ways to cope with how I was going
- 33:50Speaker 1: to handle all the pressure. But I was not going
- 33:54Speaker 1: to allow it to hold me back. And that is
- 33:55Speaker 1: one thing I'm always so proud of, and so I
- 33:57Speaker 1: knew I had to have tools in my belt to
- 33:59Speaker 1: like be able to work through this. And it was
- 34:02Speaker 1: definitely it was creating the ulter ego. And I didn't
- 34:04Speaker 1: realize that until recently when I've started to do a
- 34:07Speaker 1: lot more deep diving work into myself. But yeah, it's
- 34:11Speaker 1: been the alter ego and she's been there this whole time.
- 34:13Speaker 2: I feel like someone listening to this, here's the deep
- 34:17Speaker 2: dive work into myself and wants to know more about that.
- 34:19Speaker 3: Can you talk about that a little? Yeah.
- 34:21Speaker 1: The deep I mean deep dive work for me is therapy.
- 34:24Speaker 1: We all went through a difficult time during the pandemic.
- 34:27Speaker 1: I went through a very difficult time both family, life, business,
- 34:30Speaker 1: all of the things. And I kind of just came
- 34:33Speaker 1: out of that in January of this year and just
- 34:35Speaker 1: recognize like I know now when I start to spiral,
- 34:38Speaker 1: I've done enough work to start to realize, like things
- 34:40Speaker 1: are getting dark and they can get really dark, and
- 34:42Speaker 1: before they get really dark, you got to start pulling
- 34:44Speaker 1: yourself out and having the tools to do that.
- 34:47Speaker 3: And so the deep dive has.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Been in more therapy and more regular therapy every single
- 34:52Speaker 1: week and really working on that, and also just very
- 34:55Speaker 1: intentional movement and being in a space where I feel
- 34:57Speaker 1: very taken care of right now now. The place that
- 35:01Speaker 1: my coach and the place that I move is amazing
- 35:03Speaker 1: and has been life changing for.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Me during the pandemic.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Reflecting on how difficult it's been, you mentioned having a
- 35:11Speaker 2: hard time talk to us about where you were with
- 35:14Speaker 2: your business at the beginning of twenty twenty.
- 35:18Speaker 1: So the beginning of twenty twenty, just Move actually wasn't
- 35:21Speaker 1: even created. It was still the vision, but we were
- 35:23Speaker 1: selling single products of me in hopes to kind of
- 35:28Speaker 1: like be able to put my products out there and
- 35:31Speaker 1: have people interested in what I was doing before we
- 35:33Speaker 1: went to a full platform. And then twenty twenty happened
- 35:37Speaker 1: and everybody wanted to work out at home, and we
- 35:39Speaker 1: were perfectly set up for that to happen, and so
- 35:43Speaker 1: for the next two years, I was experiencing life very
- 35:48Speaker 1: different than my family and my friends and most of
- 35:51Speaker 1: the world around me because I had never been busier,
- 35:55Speaker 1: and so it was such a disconnect.
- 35:57Speaker 3: I had never been busier. Nobody could relate.
- 36:01Speaker 1: I had never been busier, So I'd never been more
- 36:03Speaker 1: unhealthy because I had no time to take care of myself.
- 36:07Speaker 1: And so just this massive separation of my body and
- 36:10Speaker 1: myself started to happen. And it wasn't until late late
- 36:16Speaker 1: last year. It wasn't until I got COVID in December
- 36:20Speaker 1: of this past year that things had to stop and
- 36:22Speaker 1: I had to be like I am so I am
- 36:25Speaker 1: in a dark place like this, I am not healthy.
- 36:28Speaker 3: This is not good.
- 36:29Speaker 1: And if I don't recognize that, I'm in a place
- 36:32Speaker 1: that can go deeper. Right now, like this is going
- 36:35Speaker 1: to get bad and I have to make some adjustments.
- 36:37Speaker 1: And so that's when I started making some adjustments, and
- 36:40Speaker 1: we're coming out of it. We're coming out of it.
- 36:43Speaker 1: What did not healthy look like for you? Absolutely no
- 36:47Speaker 1: energy to do anything. I'm very extreme in general, but
- 36:52Speaker 1: when I have no energy and no motivation to even move,
- 36:57Speaker 1: then I know that things are going not so well.
- 37:01Speaker 1: But because I am moving twenty four to seven, It's
- 37:05Speaker 1: like you could have seen this happening a mile away,
- 37:08Speaker 1: you know what I mean. You could have seen this
- 37:10Speaker 1: all happening, And it wasn't until COVID where I wasn't
- 37:12Speaker 1: allowed out of my house so I wasn't allowed any
- 37:14Speaker 1: distractions and I had to sit there with myself. And
- 37:17Speaker 1: you could say I didn't have energy because of COVID,
- 37:19Speaker 1: but I didn't have energy before that to do anything.
- 37:22Speaker 1: And also there's a lot of pressure on social media.
- 37:25Speaker 1: I want to show up for people as the best
- 37:28Speaker 1: version of myself every single day. If I'm putting content
- 37:31Speaker 1: out there, I want that content to be uplifting, and
- 37:33Speaker 1: I had no energy to put content out and I
- 37:36Speaker 1: think all of it started to be massive red flags
- 37:39Speaker 1: for me.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Yeah, and as someone who feels so passionate and is
- 37:44Speaker 2: such an authentic human, I would imagine that that felt
- 37:48Speaker 2: really frustrating and challenging to feel as though you can't.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Show up so icky. It felt it felt false, It
- 37:56Speaker 1: felt so fake. And I feel like I've prided myself
- 38:00Speaker 1: over the course of being on social being just real
- 38:03Speaker 1: and just showing up as myself and so yeah, it
- 38:07Speaker 1: felt it felt like I needed to have like a
- 38:09Speaker 1: come to Jesus moment with myself and with the team
- 38:11Speaker 1: on Social and just be like, here's really where I'm at,
- 38:14Speaker 1: and we're gonna work through this together.
- 38:15Speaker 3: You're gonna watch my journey. You know.
- 38:17Speaker 1: People have an expectation of how I am and think
- 38:20Speaker 1: that that's just like so easy for me to show
- 38:22Speaker 1: up every single day, work my ass off with a smile,
- 38:24Speaker 1: and it's so it's important to start getting real.
- 38:27Speaker 3: Oh so, you're so much more relatable when you're real.
- 38:29Speaker 3: That's the other thing. I'm like. That was what started
- 38:31Speaker 3: to get so frustrated with me.
- 38:32Speaker 1: I'm like, how are you showing up every single day
- 38:34Speaker 1: with a fake smile and trying to act like everything's
- 38:37Speaker 1: okay when the rest of the world is also probably
- 38:39Speaker 1: dealing with shit, Like, show up real, Kaisa, tell them
- 38:42Speaker 1: that you're.
- 38:42Speaker 3: Dealing with shit.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Tell them that shit's hard right now, Like, be real,
- 38:46Speaker 1: how did that go for you?
- 38:47Speaker 3: Great?
- 38:48Speaker 1: I mean the team on Social I have the best
- 38:51Speaker 1: community on Social. People are incredible, Like that's the thing
- 38:55Speaker 1: I always am, Like, my mind is blown by how
- 38:59Speaker 1: supportive the team on Social is. They are the reason
- 39:02Speaker 1: why I've gotten through so many things in my life
- 39:04Speaker 1: and they will never know, but like they are always
- 39:07Speaker 1: so powerful and so supportive and I wouldn't be here
- 39:11Speaker 1: without them.
- 39:12Speaker 2: Yeah, can you give us some insight as to how
- 39:16Speaker 2: that conversation went and maybe what's some of the feed.
- 39:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I just the conversation. I think it
- 39:22Speaker 1: has started throughout the pandemic. I started talking about self love.
- 39:25Speaker 1: I thought, I started talking about going through a hard time,
- 39:27Speaker 1: and I started opening up a bit more. And for me,
- 39:30Speaker 1: it's I'm connecting in the way that they're commenting or
- 39:33Speaker 1: direct messaging me, and so that's how I'm connecting, and
- 39:35Speaker 1: that's how I'm seeing and I'm just answering back and
- 39:37Speaker 1: I'm talking to people. And that's when I really started
- 39:39Speaker 1: to realize, like people need to hear this message because
- 39:42Speaker 1: they're we're all going through this together.
- 39:44Speaker 3: We're all going through this.
- 39:45Speaker 1: And when somebody can out loud say this is where
- 39:49Speaker 1: I'm at and you can connect with them, you then
- 39:51Speaker 1: feel connected. You don't feel like you're on your own,
- 39:54Speaker 1: like isolated on an island. And so I think for me,
- 39:57Speaker 1: I realized like I felt alone a lot. I know
- 40:00Speaker 1: this might sound crazy, but I feel I felt so
- 40:02Speaker 1: much more connected to people even though it was through
- 40:04Speaker 1: a screen, even though it was through Instagram, and that
- 40:07Speaker 1: started to help me pull out as well.
- 40:11Speaker 3: I love that. I love to hear that.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I totally co sign this idea that like perfection
- 40:17Speaker 2: isn't relatable, vulnerability is relatable. So getting to this place
- 40:22Speaker 2: where we step down and like sometimes it can get
- 40:26Speaker 2: easy to like put this front on because it's easier
- 40:28Speaker 2: than confronting how you really feel.
- 40:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean there's for me, the thing is I
- 40:34Speaker 1: have to go back and be okay with it all
- 40:36Speaker 1: because I wasn't ready. I wasn't in a space to
- 40:40Speaker 1: be able to actually deal with you know, how dark
- 40:43Speaker 1: things were what I was going through, And so I
- 40:45Speaker 1: know now I just have a little grace for myself
- 40:47Speaker 1: and you go through it when you're ready to go
- 40:49Speaker 1: through it. But it's a reminder to me to always
- 40:52Speaker 1: be as open and honest as I'm comfortable being. And
- 40:57Speaker 1: the team has always been there to support and friends
- 40:59Speaker 1: and family are always there to support as well.
- 41:01Speaker 2: So as you're going through these health struggles of sorts,
- 41:05Speaker 2: what's your relationship.
- 41:06Speaker 3: Like with your diet? So my relationship with my diet.
- 41:10Speaker 1: I always say like I don't care, I'll eat whatever,
- 41:13Speaker 1: whatever is in front of my face, I'll eat. But
- 41:16Speaker 1: during the pandemic one, I don't really enjoy cooking. And
- 41:20Speaker 1: during the pandemic, when I was so busy, I was
- 41:22Speaker 1: eating out like uber eating uber eating every single day,
- 41:26Speaker 1: sometimes twice a day, which no matter what you're getting,
- 41:29Speaker 1: like it's that's just not a healthy way to eat.
- 41:31Speaker 1: And so that was really difficult. My body didn't feel
- 41:34Speaker 1: good with all of that. And then also I like
- 41:36Speaker 1: to escape. I like to drink, and I like to party,
- 41:39Speaker 1: and when things are getting really rough, like that's also
- 41:42Speaker 1: something I turned to. So for me, it's like I
- 41:45Speaker 1: know when my behavior starts to change in this way,
- 41:49Speaker 1: I know what's coming. It just takes a lot for
- 41:51Speaker 1: me to then have a moment to pause and reflect
- 41:54Speaker 1: and look at it.
- 41:55Speaker 3: But I know all the trickling effects of everything.
- 41:57Speaker 1: So one thing for me that when I start to
- 42:00Speaker 1: spiral that way, like alcohol, like I start to just
- 42:02Speaker 1: try to remove one thing. Alcohol is an easy thing
- 42:04Speaker 1: for me to remove and to start looking at things clearly.
- 42:09Speaker 1: I started having somebody help me with food, so I
- 42:11Speaker 1: have food in my fridge, so I'm not uber eating. Like,
- 42:14Speaker 1: it's just tools that I have in my tool belt,
- 42:16Speaker 1: and they're different for everybody, but it's just things that
- 42:19Speaker 1: I can go to to help kind of like pull
- 42:21Speaker 1: me out of where I'm headed.
- 42:22Speaker 2: Yeah, because that like hurtle moment, that turnaround point that
- 42:26Speaker 2: you turn can be really debilidating.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and and it takes me a long time
- 42:31Speaker 1: to get there. I will know in my mind, like
- 42:34Speaker 1: I will be like, oh, oh oh, we're spiraling right now,
- 42:37Speaker 1: Like we are spiraling, this is this isn't going good.
- 42:39Speaker 3: It could be a year like I knew I was spiraling.
- 42:43Speaker 1: It takes a long time to get to the point
- 42:45Speaker 1: where like something is either the final straw or there's
- 42:49Speaker 1: enough thing's going on. A lot of times it's my
- 42:51Speaker 1: body feels something, so I'm like in pain or I'm tired,
- 42:55Speaker 1: I don't have and I like get sick of that feeling.
- 42:58Speaker 1: But there's a lot of those like kind of bottom
- 43:00Speaker 1: moments for me that start to realize I got to
- 43:02Speaker 1: change something.
- 43:03Speaker 3: Also change one thing. That's what I've learned over the years.
- 43:06Speaker 1: Do not change everything, change one thing and start to
- 43:11Speaker 1: see how like pay attention to how that starts to
- 43:14Speaker 1: either give you more energy or creates a rippling effect
- 43:17Speaker 1: of things. Alcohol for some reason, like because it's such
- 43:20Speaker 1: a go to that was an easy thing for me.
- 43:22Speaker 1: But it's also kind of protecting my space, not going
- 43:25Speaker 1: out as much, staying home more and just trying to
- 43:27Speaker 1: work through some things on my own.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and as you mentioned, the idea of the toolkit
- 43:33Speaker 2: is really really important when you reflect on your current toolkit,
- 43:39Speaker 2: what's in there to help you show up regularly, whether
- 43:42Speaker 2: it's journaling or like even specific products.
- 43:45Speaker 3: Where would you.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Get My toolkit right now is movement, which is my
- 43:49Speaker 1: coach and going to that space. And I have a
- 43:51Speaker 1: coach because I know that there's a lot of pressure
- 43:55Speaker 1: around creating my own programming, and then also accountability. My
- 43:58Speaker 1: life is very very busy, and it's really easy to
- 44:00Speaker 1: not show up for myself. It's really easy to put
- 44:03Speaker 1: myself last. And so I have a coach because I
- 44:06Speaker 1: am accountable to him and I will show up for him.
- 44:09Speaker 1: I have therapy, Like I said, that's been huge for
- 44:12Speaker 1: me the past four months. I've had therapy throughout my
- 44:15Speaker 1: entire life, but for the past four months that's been
- 44:17Speaker 1: a game changer nutrition for me. I have someone helping
- 44:21Speaker 1: make me food, which is huge.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Sleep.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Like, there's a lot of easy things that we can
- 44:26Speaker 1: do tools that don't require you know, money, sleep, hydration.
- 44:30Speaker 1: So it's like, I really just try to focus on
- 44:32Speaker 1: the daily things, the simple things that I can do.
- 44:34Speaker 1: I am trying to work on sitting still a little
- 44:37Speaker 1: bit more. But I'm not a meditator. I think I
- 44:39Speaker 1: meditate through movement. I'm not a calm person. So that
- 44:43Speaker 1: doesn't that's not going over so well, not going over
- 44:47Speaker 1: so well.
- 44:48Speaker 3: Wow.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Okay, So a lot of really basic things in the toolkit,
- 44:52Speaker 2: and to your point earlier, one thing at a time.
- 44:54Speaker 2: If all of these things sound like they could be
- 44:58Speaker 2: beneficial for you, the listener and spoiler alert, they are,
- 45:01Speaker 2: there's no need to implement them all at once.
- 45:04Speaker 3: So if you want to get better with your sleep,
- 45:07Speaker 3: start there before.
- 45:08Speaker 2: You also pick up your journal, pick up a movement practice,
- 45:12Speaker 2: think about what's in your fridge, break things up into
- 45:15Speaker 2: little doables so that they don't feel completely overwhelming.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think that's huge because you can tend
- 45:20Speaker 1: to make like somebody could make up a whole story
- 45:22Speaker 1: about like I've got it all perfectly and I'm doing
- 45:24Speaker 1: it right.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Like because you could see that from outside world, not
- 45:27Speaker 3: at all. I'm working on one thing at a time.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Once I get that one thing and it's going well,
- 45:34Speaker 1: I'm trying to add one more thing. Like for minor
- 45:37Speaker 1: little example supplementation, I've been knowing I need to add
- 45:40Speaker 1: a few more things, but it's overwhelming. It has been
- 45:43Speaker 1: to look at all the supplements. But now that I
- 45:45Speaker 1: have my food, now that I have my sleep, now
- 45:47Speaker 1: that I have my movement, the past few months, I've
- 45:49Speaker 1: been like, I can add my supplementation. That's something I
- 45:51Speaker 1: can handle right now. So it's really just about knowing yourself,
- 45:54Speaker 1: knowing what you can do. My first step is always
- 45:57Speaker 1: into movement, but that might not be your first step,
- 45:59Speaker 1: Like maybe it is sleep, maybe it's better nutrition or
- 46:02Speaker 1: proper hydration. Like just find something that's doable for you
- 46:05Speaker 1: and not overwhelming. What does supplementation look like for you
- 46:09Speaker 1: these days?
- 46:09Speaker 3: Oh it's a lot.
- 46:11Speaker 1: But I'm working with thorn supplements and like I'm always
- 46:14Speaker 1: have been so hesitant about supplements because I just it's
- 46:17Speaker 1: very gimmicky and I'm just not about that. And I
- 46:21Speaker 1: think you can get a lot of your nutrients from
- 46:22Speaker 1: your food. But thirty six. I want to stay moving
- 46:26Speaker 1: and feeling good forever, and Thorn has just continuously come
- 46:31Speaker 1: highly recommended. So I've been working with them now for
- 46:33Speaker 1: the past four months on supplementation and I can't give
- 46:40Speaker 1: them all the credit because I think it's a handful
- 46:42Speaker 1: of things, but I feel phenomenal and it's made a
- 46:45Speaker 1: huge difference. But I've also you know, added more movement,
- 46:50Speaker 1: better nutrition and hydration, all the things, but supplementation has
- 46:53Speaker 1: been at the top of the list in.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Terms of like what types of supplement are supplements are
- 46:58Speaker 2: you taking? Are you taking like a multivitamin, are you
- 47:00Speaker 2: taking fish oil?
- 47:01Speaker 3: Like what are we leaving?
- 47:02Speaker 1: So I'm taking a lot And because it's overwhelming, I
- 47:04Speaker 1: actually created a page on my website to have the
- 47:07Speaker 1: top five that are recommended from their brilliant team, and
- 47:12Speaker 1: so we have them like I have their recovery protein,
- 47:14Speaker 1: their catallite which is their electrolytes, their multi vitamin, their
- 47:18Speaker 1: amino complex, and they're creating are the top five if
- 47:22Speaker 1: you are a big mover, and then from there it's
- 47:26Speaker 1: all going to be suggested out. But because supplements are like,
- 47:29Speaker 1: oh my god, it's so debilitating, Like am I supposed
- 47:31Speaker 1: to take a million things.
- 47:32Speaker 3: No, you don't have to start there at all. Right,
- 47:35Speaker 3: And I see you sitting there with a C four can.
- 47:41Speaker 2: What's the deal with the C four I feel like
- 47:42Speaker 2: I've been seeing a lot about it on social.
- 47:44Speaker 1: I know everyone's like, how do you get through your workouts?
- 47:46Speaker 1: And I'm like, my C four Energy, I just am
- 47:48Speaker 1: somebody like I have the brand C four in general.
- 47:52Speaker 1: They are so fun to work with and their product
- 47:55Speaker 1: I've been using for years and so it's like a
- 47:57Speaker 1: perfect partnership for me. And they're just a really fun brand,
- 48:01Speaker 1: Like we meet energy to energy and their products are awesome.
- 48:04Speaker 1: Obviously I love them. You'll see them in all my
- 48:07Speaker 1: videos and so I've gotten the whole team on our
- 48:09Speaker 1: C four Energy. But you know, we're trying to do
- 48:11Speaker 1: a lot in life and I need some energy to
- 48:13Speaker 1: carry me through.
- 48:14Speaker 2: I was like, I just need to comment on this can.
- 48:16Speaker 2: Now I'm seeing you sip as we sit here. You're like,
- 48:19Speaker 2: this is actually my secret super power drink that helps
- 48:22Speaker 2: me get through everything everything I have going on. So,
- 48:27Speaker 2: like we said, pandemic was a hard time, lots of
- 48:30Speaker 2: challenges coming out of it. Now, when you think about
- 48:32Speaker 2: what excites you for you and your business at this point,
- 48:35Speaker 2: where are you going?
- 48:36Speaker 3: What's on deck?
- 48:37Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing that excites me is getting
- 48:39Speaker 1: the world to move and getting more people into movement
- 48:41Speaker 1: every single day.
- 48:42Speaker 3: That's always been the thing that's excited me.
- 48:44Speaker 1: It's always been the thing that's gotten me out of
- 48:46Speaker 1: bed every single morning.
- 48:48Speaker 3: It's also for me really.
- 48:50Speaker 1: Recognizing that in as an industry as a whole, we
- 48:55Speaker 1: don't help encourage people to start their movement journey. And
- 48:58Speaker 1: so that's really what I'm focusing on as well, is
- 49:01Speaker 1: helping people understand you have a body, you are a mover.
- 49:05Speaker 1: And I think in general, the fitness industry tends to
- 49:08Speaker 1: focus on people that are already moving, and I love
- 49:11Speaker 1: focusing on those people, but I really want people who
- 49:14Speaker 1: have never moved before, who are possibly in pain, who
- 49:17Speaker 1: don't know what to do. I want them to have
- 49:19Speaker 1: a place to go to. And that is what we're
- 49:21Speaker 1: trying to build with Just Move and my start Moving level.
- 49:25Speaker 3: I want to.
- 49:25Speaker 2: Ask you on like a woman to woman level female
- 49:29Speaker 2: entrepreneur level, I to can sympathize and relate to this
- 49:33Speaker 2: idea of putting myself last, it gets.
- 49:35Speaker 3: To be really easy.
- 49:37Speaker 2: How do you find the time or make the time
- 49:39Speaker 2: to give back to you, and what do you feel
- 49:42Speaker 2: like maybe something that you've sacrificed when it comes to
- 49:46Speaker 2: building your brand.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm going to start with the sacrifice. I've sacrificed everything.
- 49:51Speaker 1: I think this is the thing where when people from
- 49:54Speaker 1: the outside world and you can tell yourself your own
- 49:56Speaker 1: stories and they maybe look at what I do and
- 49:59Speaker 1: think that they want that. I've given up almost everything
- 50:02Speaker 1: in my life to be here, like relationships. So you know,
- 50:05Speaker 1: my siblings are all married and there's children and everything
- 50:08Speaker 1: going on, and then they look at my life and
- 50:09Speaker 1: I'm like, my business is my baby.
- 50:11Speaker 3: It has been my entire life.
- 50:13Speaker 1: I work twenty four to seven, so you know, my
- 50:15Speaker 1: friend group is very small. I get to travel a
- 50:18Speaker 1: little bit, but I don't do a ton of crazy
- 50:20Speaker 1: things just for pleasure, even though I love what I do,
- 50:25Speaker 1: So that is what brings me a lot of joy.
- 50:27Speaker 3: But I've sacrificed.
- 50:28Speaker 1: I would say everything, everything to be at this point,
- 50:31Speaker 1: and I would do it again.
- 50:32Speaker 3: It's not a negative. I would do it again.
- 50:34Speaker 1: I would do it over and over and over again
- 50:37Speaker 1: because I absolutely love what I do and I love
- 50:41Speaker 1: the challenge of trying to get more and more people
- 50:44Speaker 1: into movement, and I love what it means when people
- 50:46Speaker 1: start their movement journey and how much that transforms their lives,
- 50:49Speaker 1: and I'm motivated by that every single day. I think
- 50:52Speaker 1: in terms of prioritizing myself again, it goes back to
- 50:55Speaker 1: I hired a coach because I know that I will
- 50:58Speaker 1: be accountable to him. I think when it's prioritizing yourself,
- 51:01Speaker 1: you have to be very realistic with yourself.
- 51:02Speaker 3: You have to know yourself.
- 51:04Speaker 1: I will not make time for myself unless it's on
- 51:06Speaker 1: the calendar and I'm accountable to somebody because at the
- 51:09Speaker 1: end of the day, every damsels to end my day
- 51:11Speaker 1: with a ten minute don't do anything, just breathe for
- 51:16Speaker 1: my therapist, and I don't do it because she's not
- 51:17Speaker 1: here leading me through it. And so like, now I
- 51:20Speaker 1: know myself and rather than beating myself up, I'm like,
- 51:23Speaker 1: I have now scheduled and a point with her every
- 51:25Speaker 1: single week. I have my trainer every single week, I
- 51:27Speaker 1: have somebody helping with nutrition. So I just do what
- 51:32Speaker 1: I set myself up for success. I do what works
- 51:35Speaker 1: for me, and I try not to judge it and
- 51:37Speaker 1: I try not to analyze it, and I just know
- 51:38Speaker 1: what works for me, and I stay moving with that.
- 51:41Speaker 2: For someone listening to this who resonates with your message
- 51:45Speaker 2: of the importance of just beginning, of just starting, they
- 51:49Speaker 2: may feel a little intimidated on it, but they really
- 51:52Speaker 2: do want to give it a whole hearted go. What
- 51:57Speaker 2: advice do you offer to that.
- 51:59Speaker 1: I I first want to say, you go, and you
- 52:02Speaker 1: got this, and it is just about getting started. The
- 52:05Speaker 1: number one thing I say is, even though you want
- 52:08Speaker 1: to start your movement journey, not every single day do
- 52:11Speaker 1: you have to move. But what you have to do
- 52:13Speaker 1: is carve out two minutes three minutes every single day
- 52:17Speaker 1: to just take a minute. You can be sitting in
- 52:18Speaker 1: your chair, you could be stretching, you can be breathing,
- 52:21Speaker 1: but you have to start forming the habit and then
- 52:24Speaker 1: from there the habit will grow. And when you are
- 52:27Speaker 1: ready for that habit to grow, go to start moving
- 52:29Speaker 1: dot com because I've got.
- 52:30Speaker 3: You covered like I am here for you.
- 52:33Speaker 1: And the number one thing with moving is most of
- 52:35Speaker 1: the time people who are not moving a lot are
- 52:39Speaker 1: in pain. And the misnomer here is that if you
- 52:43Speaker 1: start moving, you're gonna be in more pain.
- 52:45Speaker 3: But it's exact opposite.
- 52:47Speaker 1: You're probably in a lot of pain because your joints
- 52:49Speaker 1: are not moving, and so we're gonna start moving very gently.
- 52:53Speaker 1: Most of our workouts start actually in a chair, so
- 52:56Speaker 1: I've got you covered, and then from there you're gonna
- 52:58Speaker 1: build up your strength and you're gonna be really empowered
- 53:01Speaker 1: and what your body can do, and the rest is history.
- 53:03Speaker 3: You can do anything you want. Who empowers you aside
- 53:05Speaker 3: from your community.
- 53:06Speaker 1: I was gonna say it's the team. It's the team
- 53:09Speaker 1: on social media. I get so much energy from that team,
- 53:14Speaker 1: and I'm so motivated to continue to show up for them.
- 53:16Speaker 1: I'm so motivated to be my best version, the best
- 53:20Speaker 1: version of myself for them.
- 53:21Speaker 3: So it's one hundred percent of the team hand in
- 53:23Speaker 3: hand with building your business.
- 53:25Speaker 2: I'm sure a lot of people you turn to every
- 53:30Speaker 2: now and again for advice. If you have to reflect
- 53:32Speaker 2: on the best advice that you've been offered as an entrepreneur,
- 53:35Speaker 2: what comes to mind.
- 53:37Speaker 1: I think the best advice I've gotten is there's no
- 53:39Speaker 1: right way. So for me, as a perfectionist, I'm constantly thinking.
- 53:44Speaker 1: I'm constantly thinking I'm dumb. I don't have the answers
- 53:47Speaker 1: I can't do this. What am I doing? How did
- 53:49Speaker 1: I get here? I shouldn't be here? And the best
- 53:53Speaker 1: advice that I keep getting from somebody that's very important
- 53:56Speaker 1: to me is there's absolutely no right way. You're here
- 53:59Speaker 1: for a reason. You've gotten this far. There's more to go,
- 54:02Speaker 1: and you're doing it right. Like, look back and reflect.
- 54:05Speaker 1: Don't keep looking forward all the time. Look back and
- 54:07Speaker 1: reflect at what you've achieved, Be proud of that, use
- 54:10Speaker 1: that as fuel to move forward. And you don't have
- 54:12Speaker 1: to be like anybody else, because you're not like anybody else.
- 54:15Speaker 2: You touched on before, the idea that the journey isn't
- 54:19Speaker 2: necessarily linear, I would assume, and I know because this
- 54:24Speaker 2: is how it is.
- 54:24Speaker 3: That there have.
- 54:25Speaker 2: Certainly been some tear filled professional setbacks as you've been
- 54:32Speaker 2: building your brand. What did you look to How have
- 54:39Speaker 2: you had to pick yourself up when those difficult moments
- 54:44Speaker 2: have struck for you?
- 54:47Speaker 3: That is an awesome question.
- 54:49Speaker 1: I think the truth is is that I'm so anchored
- 54:52Speaker 1: in my purpose, in my mission that the entire roller
- 54:57Speaker 1: coaster ride is worth it, and that when it gets really,
- 55:01Speaker 1: really low, I just go back to that. Like, when
- 55:04Speaker 1: it gets low could mean a deal fell through. Could
- 55:08Speaker 1: mean you know, sales are not what they should be.
- 55:11Speaker 1: It could mean so many things. But if my ultimate
- 55:14Speaker 1: goal is to get the world to move, and I'm
- 55:17Speaker 1: attached to that always, and I can attach back to
- 55:19Speaker 1: that as fuel, then I can weather any storm and
- 55:23Speaker 1: I can get through anything. And I think for me,
- 55:26Speaker 1: that's just kind of always been that anchoring part that
- 55:29Speaker 1: pulls me through.
- 55:30Speaker 2: The most important takeaway that I offer to whoever will
- 55:35Speaker 2: listen is that getting through doesn't mean not having those
- 55:39Speaker 2: moments of sadness or giving yourself a second to mourn
- 55:43Speaker 2: your hard work that didn't pan out as you'd hoped.
- 55:46Speaker 2: You get to do that, but then you also get
- 55:49Speaker 2: the opportunity to pick yourself up and keep going.
- 55:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and there are lessons I really try to look,
- 55:53Speaker 1: I mean pause when something happens.
- 55:55Speaker 3: I go through all the emotions. I do not try
- 55:57Speaker 3: to ignore them.
- 55:58Speaker 1: I definitely go through being super upset or disappointed, but
- 56:01Speaker 1: I also try to reflect on like what is this
- 56:04Speaker 1: Am I supposed to go through a different door? Is
- 56:06Speaker 1: this trying to lead me somewhere else? And just like
- 56:09Speaker 1: I said before, I've had so many opportunities in my
- 56:11Speaker 1: life where you would think that a forward step looked
- 56:15Speaker 1: like this, and you would think that a backward step
- 56:17Speaker 1: looked like this, But what looked backwards was propelled me
- 56:21Speaker 1: like slingshotted me so far forward. So I do try
- 56:25Speaker 1: to look at things in life as like lessons, and
- 56:27Speaker 1: once I've gotten through the emotion, try to analyze them
- 56:30Speaker 1: and just see if it's trying to push me in
- 56:32Speaker 1: a different direction.
- 56:34Speaker 3: Right, like why is this happening for you?
- 56:36Speaker 2: As a question, I'm always asking myself, even when what's
- 56:39Speaker 2: happening is nothing that I wanted.
- 56:42Speaker 1: It was so much of what we've envisioned. I know
- 56:45Speaker 1: where I want to go, I do not know how
- 56:47Speaker 1: I'm going to get there. Like I say all the time,
- 56:49Speaker 1: I know the type of cake I want to bake,
- 56:51Speaker 1: I have no idea what the recipe is, And I'm
- 56:53Speaker 1: okay with it switching up and I'm okay as long
- 56:56Speaker 1: as I'm anchored to the right end point. I'm okay
- 57:00Speaker 1: with things taking a lot of detours or going a
- 57:02Speaker 1: different route because I've started to realize it's only my
- 57:05Speaker 1: ego in here that says the route has to be
- 57:08Speaker 1: this way. So I'm starting to be a lot more
- 57:10Speaker 1: flexible with We're gonna bend and turn and twist and
- 57:13Speaker 1: go all over as long as we all know we're
- 57:15Speaker 1: going for this end goal.
- 57:16Speaker 2: When someone comes to your Instagram page, they see a
- 57:20Speaker 2: woman that is followed by many, who loves to work out,
- 57:24Speaker 2: has her ms and exercise science. When you look in
- 57:27Speaker 2: the mirror, what is it that you see looking back
- 57:29Speaker 2: at you.
- 57:30Speaker 3: Oh, that's gonna make me emotional.
- 57:33Speaker 1: Well, when I look in the mirror, in all honesty,
- 57:36Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, we got a lot of work to do.
- 57:38Speaker 3: We're trying to get the whole world to move.
- 57:39Speaker 1: We're not there yet, but I do try to reflect,
- 57:42Speaker 1: and in moments like this, I do appreciate you bring
- 57:44Speaker 1: that up because I do reflect on like I never
- 57:47Speaker 1: in a million years would have thought that I would
- 57:51Speaker 1: have been here through everything that I've gone through. I
- 57:53Speaker 1: never in a million years could say, I mean, technically,
- 57:57Speaker 1: I am a professional athlete because I move and I
- 57:59Speaker 1: get paid for it.
- 58:00Speaker 3: So that is like one bucketless item that I'm always like.
- 58:03Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh, you had no idea how it was
- 58:06Speaker 1: going to happen, but you are officially here and I'm
- 58:09Speaker 1: so proud of that. And then also just that I've
- 58:11Speaker 1: I've created a platform that encourages the world to move,
- 58:14Speaker 1: which was always my goal and my passion, and that
- 58:17Speaker 1: is what I'm going to continue doing.
- 58:20Speaker 3: You're wearing a sweatshirt right now that says I am
- 58:22Speaker 3: more than my body.
- 58:24Speaker 2: If you had to call out some of the characteristics
- 58:28Speaker 2: that you have that make you truly proud of who
- 58:32Speaker 2: you've become, what would those be?
- 58:35Speaker 1: I mean, I think my biggest characteristic is the fact
- 58:38Speaker 1: that I never get up give up. I think my
- 58:40Speaker 1: biggest characteristic is that I'm a hard worker. At the
- 58:44Speaker 1: end of the day, I don't take no for an answer,
- 58:47Speaker 1: and I believe in myself. It's been many, many years
- 58:51Speaker 1: of working on myself, but I believe in myself. And
- 58:54Speaker 1: I think I'm you know, uniquely me and starting to
- 58:56Speaker 1: become more and more proud of that. But yeah, I
- 58:59Speaker 1: think I've gotten to where I've gotten today because I.
- 59:03Speaker 3: Have a tough shell.
- 59:04Speaker 1: I have a very very soft right below the shell
- 59:07Speaker 1: is very soft and very sensitive. But I'm willing to
- 59:10Speaker 1: put in a lot of work. I'm willing to do
- 59:12Speaker 1: a lot of the things that a lot of people
- 59:13Speaker 1: don't want to do because I am so attached to
- 59:16Speaker 1: my mission and my purpose and why I think I'm
- 59:19Speaker 1: even here on this earth.
- 59:21Speaker 2: The last thing that I want to touch on with
- 59:23Speaker 2: you here today is injury. I know that you have
- 59:26Speaker 2: gone through a few major ones as someone who is
- 59:31Speaker 2: so passionate about movement, who really credits it as the
- 59:35Speaker 2: thing that keeps her saying, talk to me about how
- 59:38Speaker 2: challenging some of these major injuries have been for you
- 59:42Speaker 2: and what were they?
- 59:43Speaker 1: Yeah, so injuries have always been have always plagued me.
- 59:46Speaker 1: The more you move, the more you're going to have injuries.
- 59:48Speaker 1: But there always something that allows me to have a
- 59:51Speaker 1: total shift in what's going on in my life. So
- 59:54Speaker 1: I think the biggest injury for me was when I
- 59:56Speaker 1: broke my leg, and that was that was like six
- 59:59Speaker 1: or seven years years ago, and it was just when
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: social media was starting and I was on my own,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: and I was thinking, this is over, Like everything I've
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: worked for is over if I can't if I don't.
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: Have a leg that works right now, how am.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: I going to create workout videos? So at a very deep,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: dark moment, and then I realize I can do a
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: lot of movement on one leg and with my corn
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: with my upper body, and that ended up kind of
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: catapulting me, because then I became the crazy lady with
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: a pink cast that was doing you know, movements. But
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: in that moment, I had a conversation with myself that
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: recognized that I was not listening to her, I was
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: not taking care of her. My leg was broken because
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: that was a final thing for my body to get
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: me to sit down on my couch and listen to her.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: But there were a lot of things that were happening
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: before that, and so I literally had a conversation with
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: my leg and I said, if you heal faster than
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: the doctor said you're gonna heal, I promise I will
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: take care of you. I will listen to you, I
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: will do anything that you need, and I will put
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: you first for the rest of my life. And I
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: have done that and I have taken care of her.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: And I just had this conversation where I looked at
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: my body as something other than me, and I looked
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: at like, she is my best friend and I need
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: her to get through this life. And if I don't
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: start honoring her and listening to her and taking care
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: of her, she will not be able to show up
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: for me. And so that was the biggest turning point
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: for me. And then I've had many injuries along the road,
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: nothing as major, but I just think injuries now, like
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: I'm not saying they're like positive, but they are a
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: moment to reflect. There are a moment to look at
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: some other things that are going on in life. There
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: are a moment, you know, where your body just gets
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: to slow you down and have you, you know, look
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: around and see what else you could possibly be working on.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: I've been dealing with a little bit of like planter
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: fasci itis, which is like the sexiest term, isn't it
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: like planter or fasci itis. But I feel like I
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: have been thinking of her as you put it the
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: same way. And also you know how people talk to
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: plants and they grow better. I'm like, oh, if I
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: just speak kindly toward the direction of my right heel,
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: then we're gonna be all good. Emily, that like totally
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: makes my day.
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: It is. It is why I started the eye am
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: more than my body.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: And I know that sounds like a negative, but it
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: was to help I use it for me, but it's
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: to help people understand that you are one thing. Your
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: body is another thing. She it They are always listening
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: to you. So when you have this negative self talk,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: whatever's going on in your head, when you define your
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: body by simply what it looks like all of these things,
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: your body is absorbing all of that. And so I
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: actively have my client's practice, and not in a gimmicky way,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: not in standing in front of the mirror and being
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: like I love myself, not that, just like one positive
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: thing you can say, or if a negative thought goes through,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: then can you switch that and say something For me,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: I have some big ass arms. It's always a thing.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: I'm like, oh man, those arms are huge. And then
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: I'm like, yes, and that's why you can do these
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: crazy pull ups and push up. You know. It's like
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: changing that thought process. And just like I do reps
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: in the gym, I do reps with my positive self
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: talk all the time. But I think it makes a
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: huge difference. So I would say, keep on with that.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: We love a positive self talk rep, but not in
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: a gimmicky way.
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: That's where I'm like, it's not calling you, no, I'm
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: with you. I'm with you because i I'm with yeah.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: Because I'm like, the whole self love culture turns into
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: this like where it just becomes fake and you're not
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: actually connected. But I think if you can start to
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: appreciate your body as like your best friend, I think
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: that relationship really takes a turn in a positive direction.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: All right, Guisa, Right now you have an opportunity to
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: give yourself a piece of advice, looking back at the
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: hurdle moment, which was back in high school, pulling yourself
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: out of that negative self talk spiral, finding some purpose
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: with the knowledge that you have. Now, what advice do
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: you give yourself that is so hard?
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: I mean, I think I would have just given myself
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: a hug. I would have just given myself some love.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: I would have just showed up for myself in a
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: very different way. And I always look back at young
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: Kais and I'm like, oh, always feel so I'm like,
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: oh God, it's so dark and sad. I'm like, I
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: wish I could have just been there to be like,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: you are going to make it, and you are going
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: to do epic things, and you are so worth all
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: of this, and the journey is so incredibly hard right now.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: But because you're going through these low lows, you are
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: going to be able to go to some high highs.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: You're gonna be able to take that story with you
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: and show up in so many different ways for people.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: So just like, stay with this, just stay with this,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: because I wouldn't, honestly, Emily, I wouldn't go back and
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: change anything because all of those lessons taught me so
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: much about myself, taught me what I could work through,
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: what I could go through. It taught me to relate
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: to other people in a very different way. So I
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: think I would just I would just give her the
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: biggest hug and say, like, you're gonna make it, just
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: like keep going one step in front of the other.
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: One step in front of the other. Kaisa, I'm so
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: glad that we were able to do this. If they
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: don't follow you yet, how do the hurdlers keep up
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: with you?
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: How do they follow along with you? Give me all
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: the details.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: Well, you can come move with me on just move
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: dot com, and you can come hang out with me
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: on social media, which is caise of fits, and if
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: you have any questions, like, I am the one that
