- 0:00Speaker 1: Government's banned puberty block of pbscriptions for new patients it's
- 0:03Speaker 1: under eighteen's those who are transgender. Ban comes into effect
- 0:07Speaker 1: from the nineteenth and December last until the UK finishes
- 0:11Speaker 1: clinical trials into the drugs. They say this is about safety.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Dame Sue Bagshaw is School of Medicine, University of Otago,
- 0:17Speaker 1: christ Church. Dame Sue, good morning, good morning, Good to
- 0:21Speaker 1: have you on the show. Are these drugs safe?
- 0:26Speaker 2: Well, the experience we've had so far of the last
- 0:29Speaker 2: ten twenty years has been that they're very safe, They're reversible,
- 0:34Speaker 2: and I think obviously we always need to be aware
- 0:39Speaker 2: of safety. We always need to be aware of the
- 0:42Speaker 2: pros and cons of ani medicine we've prescribed. But it
- 0:46Speaker 2: seems sad that politicians get involved in something that really
- 0:50Speaker 2: should be a health issue.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Is the health issue being sorted though? I mean, are
- 0:55Speaker 1: we giving out drugs that aren't safe? Why it was
- 0:58Speaker 1: the UK doing this study into the safety of them.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Why around bureaucrats saying we can't say that they are safe.
- 1:07Speaker 2: That's a very good question, and I wondered about myself
- 1:10Speaker 2: because we have no evidence either way. What we do
- 1:14Speaker 2: we have some evidence, so that they're pretty safe and
- 1:18Speaker 2: we have had no disasters so far compared with things
- 1:22Speaker 2: like aspirin, which is pretty unsafe and you can buy
- 1:25Speaker 2: that over the counter. So, you know, I think it's
- 1:29Speaker 2: a it's a worry that we're getting political influences on
- 1:36Speaker 2: what could be a very life saving medicine.
- 1:40Speaker 1: So the Ministry of Education, the sorry, the Ministry of
- 1:43Speaker 1: Health here in New Zealand, the UK, you know, the
- 1:47Speaker 1: NH is the concerns that have been raised by government
- 1:51Speaker 1: bureaucrats around the world. You're saying they're being politicized.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I do gender is a social intent and I think
- 2:03Speaker 2: social influences are being brought to bear names.
