Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Medical debt ad EXPOSES party divide on affordability, rural healthcare
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: One of the red states giving Republicans a surprising run
- 0:03Speaker 1: for their money is Kansas. There, Republican Senator Roger Marshall
- 0:08Speaker 1: continues to face criticism after recent New York Times reporting
- 0:12Speaker 1: revealed that he, as a doctor, he sued hundreds of
- 0:17Speaker 1: patients over unpaid medical bills.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Can I ask you, Rev, in 2026, is there a
- 0:22Speaker 2: worse sort of ad to be able to run against
- 0:26Speaker 2: an opponent than... Somebody in the medical field suing a
- 0:33Speaker 2: single mother and her ultimately going to jail over unpaid
- 0:37Speaker 2: medical bills because unpaid medical bills right now. You talk
- 0:41Speaker 2: about epidemics, pandemics. That's what's going on right now because
- 0:45Speaker 2: people can't afford to pay their medical bills.
- 0:49Speaker 3: And for the millions of people, millions that can't pay
- 0:53Speaker 3: their medical bills either on time or for prolonged periods
- 0:57Speaker 3: of time. To hear about people that literally went to
- 1:01Speaker 3: jail because of this guy.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Because a rich guy.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:03Speaker 2: And why can't.
- 1:05Speaker 5: They afford their medical bills?
- 1:07Speaker 3: And they can't because of affordability. And here's a guy
- 1:10Speaker 3: making money off of it. And you want to put
- 1:12Speaker 3: him back in government to continue to do what he's doing.
- 1:17Speaker 3: And he's oblivious to this kind of pain on regular people.
- 1:20Speaker 3: And this goes across racial lines and economic lines.
- 1:23Speaker 2: And they passed their bill. What they call the big,
- 1:27Speaker 2: beautiful bill. It was a nightmare for Americans. They slashed
- 1:31Speaker 2: so much in health care spending while extending tax cuts
- 1:35Speaker 2: to billionaires and multinational corporations.
- 1:38Speaker 6: The other thing I don't understand about this candidacy is
- 1:41Speaker 6: Kansas is a fairly small state. So you've got to
- 1:43Speaker 6: figure that this guy has a reputation locally. I mean,
- 1:48Speaker 6: the hubris it takes. To treat people in your care
- 1:52Speaker 6: that way as a doctor and then run for public office?
- 1:57Speaker 3: And he's running against the pastor of the largest Methodist
- 2:01Speaker 3: church in the country, who's very much humanitarian. I mean,
- 2:04Speaker 3: you couldn't have had a larger example of the contrast
- 2:09Speaker 3: of what parties are representing what party. This guy is
- 2:12Speaker 3: a almost looked upon almost saintly in Kansas that he's
- 2:15Speaker 3: running against.
- 2:16Speaker 1: So speaking of his challenger, Adam Hamilton is out with
- 2:19Speaker 1: a new political ad featuring one of the senator's former patients.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Take a look.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I'm Adam Hamilton, and I approve this message.
- 2:29Speaker 5: One evening I see lights. I open the door and
- 2:33Speaker 5: it's a police officer.
- 2:35Speaker 4: They arrested me because I didn't make a $ 50 payment
- 2:38Speaker 4: to Roger Marshall. I was eight months pregnant and I said,
- 2:42Speaker 4: please do not handcuff me in front of my two-year-old daughter.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Roger Marshall preyed on the low-income families of Kansas. The
- 2:51Speaker 4: healthcare system is broken, but not for Roger Marshall. He's
- 2:55Speaker 4: absolutely profiting from it.
- 2:57Speaker 2: A guy that is worth $ 10 million begins legal actions
- 3:04Speaker 2: that has a mom who is eight months pregnant. handcuffed
- 3:10Speaker 2: in front of her children. It neatly, I just got
- 3:18Speaker 2: to say, it just sort of neatly summarizes the difference
- 3:25Speaker 2: between how these two parties look at medical debt and
- 3:30Speaker 2: how they look at affordability and how they look at
- 3:33Speaker 2: the world.
- 3:35Speaker 7: And We've had the privilege around this table of traveling,
- 3:38Speaker 7: I think, to other countries where it just doesn't have
- 3:42Speaker 7: to be like this.
- 3:43Speaker 5: This is the most important thing.
- 3:44Speaker 7: It just doesn't have to be like this. It is
- 3:46Speaker 7: a choice to have people in circumstances like that. It
- 3:51Speaker 7: is a social choice we collectively make, and we can
- 3:54Speaker 7: make very different choices.
- 3:56Speaker 2: And the Republicans made that choice this year. They made
- 3:59Speaker 2: the choice to take money away from people like her.
- 4:05Speaker 2: to take away health care from people like her, and
- 4:09Speaker 2: to have millionaires and billionaires like Roger Marshall get tax cuts.
- 4:14Speaker 2: It's that simple. They made that choice. And yeah, to
- 4:20Speaker 2: cause a growing crisis with rural hospitals across Kansas, across Nebraska,
- 4:28Speaker 2: across Iowa. They made that choice. And it's not like
- 4:31Speaker 2: we're like, Monday morning quarterbacking here. We warned Republicans every
- 4:36Speaker 2: day while they were thinking about voting for that bill
- 4:38Speaker 2: that if they did it, they were going to savage
- 4:42Speaker 2: rural health care. And they did it because they had
- 4:46Speaker 2: to give tax cuts to millionaires like Roger Marshall, billionaires,
- 4:50Speaker 2: multinational corporations. And this is where it ends up. Take
- 4:54Speaker 2: a look at this ad again. That's when I was mouthing,
- 5:00Speaker 2: play the ad again while he was talking here. Here,
- 5:03Speaker 2: watch here. Hold on, hold on. Let go, let go.
- 5:07Speaker 2: That's what that means, TJ.
- 5:10Speaker 8: Just roll the ad.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I'm Adam Hamilton, and I approve this message.
- 5:13Speaker 5: One evening, I see lights. I open the door, and
- 5:18Speaker 5: it's a police officer.
- 5:19Speaker 4: They arrested me because I didn't make a $ 50.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Payment to Roger Marshall.
- 5:25Speaker 4: I was eight months pregnant and I said, please do
- 5:28Speaker 4: not handcuff me in front of my two-year-old daughter. Roger
- 5:31Speaker 4: Marshall preyed on the low-income families of Kansas. The health
- 5:36Speaker 4: care system is broken, but not for Roger Marshall. He's
- 5:39Speaker 4: absolutely profiting from it.
- 5:42Speaker 9: That's a devastating ad, one we might be talking about
- 5:44Speaker 9: for a long time. It is certainly a microcosm of
- 5:47Speaker 9: where these two parties stand right now. But also in
- 5:48Speaker 9: this moment, the fact that we're seeing ads like this,
- 5:51Speaker 9: that we're talking about the Senate race in Kansas, shows
- 5:54Speaker 9: you Republicans are on.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Their back foot.
- 5:57Speaker 5: Well, there's no question.
- 5:58Speaker 6: But I also think that what's powerful about the ad,
- 6:01Speaker 6: not just the story itself, but it's doing something that
- 6:05Speaker 6: I think establishment Democrats and leadership leaders Don't lean into
- 6:11Speaker 6: hard enough, which is it's not just talking about affordability
- 6:14Speaker 6: as this concept that you can pull from the air.
- 6:17Speaker 6: It's talking about real people. And it's also explaining who
- 6:21Speaker 6: is to blame and who has been profiting and benefiting
- 6:24Speaker 6: off this deeply unequal and increasingly unfair country with corrupt
- 6:30Speaker 6: officials at the top. And that is why, by the way,
- 6:33Speaker 6: the Democratic socialists understand that, which is why they're making
- 6:38Speaker 6: inroads elsewhere. But that doesn't have to be a far
- 6:40Speaker 6: left message. This is about fairness. And I think people,
- 6:44Speaker 6: even in red states, of course, they understand this. This
- 6:48Speaker 6: isn't a red-blue issue. And that's why the Republicans are struggling,
- 6:51Speaker 6: because it's clear to American voters that they're not working
- 6:56Speaker 6: for them. They're working for their billionaire friends.
- 6:59Speaker 5: There's an opening.
- 7:00Speaker 2: You know what else is looking clear to me as
- 7:02Speaker 2: I'm as I'm watching the ads, at least in the
- 7:05Speaker 2: ad wars, you know, two years ago, I was saying
- 7:09Speaker 2: on the show and anybody would listen. Hey, listen, that
- 7:13Speaker 2: Trump ad or that Republican ad about trans prisoners, taxpayer,
- 7:19Speaker 2: trans surgeries, convicts. It all lines up. This is going
- 7:24Speaker 2: to kill you with working class men. And they just
- 7:28Speaker 2: kept hammering that. And, you know, in 22, the trans
- 7:31Speaker 2: issue didn't work, didn't work in 20 or 18, but
- 7:34Speaker 2: it worked in 24, that ad. So I thought it
- 7:38Speaker 2: was very interesting seeing that ad and gasping and seeing
- 7:42Speaker 2: a lot of random Republican ads. Josh, Terry, there's a
- 7:45Speaker 2: liberal socialist. They're all over the place. They've got no message.
- 7:51Speaker 2: They've got no purpose. Things to hide. They can't even
- 7:54Speaker 2: scare people. Like, they're... It's it's interesting. And so I
- 7:59Speaker 2: saw that through the college football games across the Midwest.
- 8:02Speaker 2: The only thing that's broken through this weekend is this
- 8:04Speaker 2: horrible to add where Donald Trump reminds everybody everything he's
- 8:09Speaker 2: done wrong and then has the U.S. government pay for
- 8:11Speaker 2: it at the end.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Yeah, great.
- 8:13Speaker 2: That is a net negative negative for the Republicans.
- 8:16Speaker 8: Hey, it's me, Rachel Maddow. If you like the story
