- 0:00Speaker 1: It's a Texa on Tuesday here on sports Radio AM
- 0:06Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone. As we say, always in the
- 0:09Speaker 1: two o'clock hour, one of our return cuts is from
- 0:11Speaker 1: the immortal Stevie Raygaughn. In the four o'clock hour we
- 0:14Speaker 1: hear from the King George Strait, but always in the
- 0:16Speaker 1: three o'clock hour the iconic Willie Nelson. And on Tuesdays
- 0:20Speaker 1: in the three o'clock hour, it's our Tuesdays with Tip
- 0:23Speaker 1: feature with Greg Tepper, the editor in chief of Dave
- 0:26Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, who can probably identify with this
- 0:30Speaker 1: particular Willie Nelson cover of the classic all of Me,
- 0:35Speaker 1: Which is Must, Which is must be how you feel
- 0:38Speaker 1: right toward the end of public when you get to
- 0:41Speaker 1: publication time, when everybody's pulling on you to get it
- 0:45Speaker 1: the magazine to the finish line before you finally get
- 0:48Speaker 1: Am I right about that?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yes?
- 0:50Speaker 3: Yes, it's a whole effort, and it's a whole body
- 0:55Speaker 3: effort there that like you know, those final weeks before
- 0:59Speaker 3: you send the press, you're exhausted, You're just trying to
- 1:02Speaker 3: get past the finish line. Uh, and then you can relax,
- 1:06Speaker 3: and then you can relax But what's funny is that
- 1:08Speaker 3: now and I've I've made this comment before because my
- 1:11Speaker 3: wife is an elementary school teacher, and and so we
- 1:16Speaker 3: kind of actually have stumbled into a pair of careers.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Where are our schedules kind of line up?
- 1:23Speaker 3: Because we send the press around the last day of
- 1:25Speaker 3: school and now it's back to school. My boys are
- 1:28Speaker 3: already back in school. Uh, but it's it's it's about
- 1:32Speaker 3: to get busy for for me too. So like summer
- 1:34Speaker 3: vacation is over, so uh, once again, all of me
- 1:38Speaker 3: will be required for another high school football season.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Are both of your boys now in school? Your youngest, Steven.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Match is in pre k? So he is, you know,
- 1:47Speaker 3: he is in school. He's got a teacher, you know what. Yes,
- 1:51Speaker 3: we need to drop him off somewhere. So yeah, he's
- 1:53Speaker 3: he's in pre k. But then Hank is in second grade.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Okay, all right, Yeah, time flies, no doubt about it.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:59Speaker 1: We made reference to the magazine, and uh, we're giving
- 2:03Speaker 1: We've been giving away copies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football
- 2:05Speaker 1: magazine for low these three weeks. And uh and and
- 2:09Speaker 1: we're gonna do it again, give it. We gave away
- 2:11Speaker 1: a copy of the two o'clock hour, we're gonna give
- 2:12Speaker 1: away a copy year in the three o'clock hour, one
- 2:14Speaker 1: in the four o'clock hour, we're gonna do.
- 2:15Speaker 2: It the rest of the way. Uh.
- 2:16Speaker 1: But as I pointed out before you came on tap,
- 2:19Speaker 1: I did this last hour. I said, Uh, the magazine
- 2:22Speaker 1: is wonderful and it's got everything you need to kind
- 2:24Speaker 1: of prepare you for the season in high school and
- 2:25Speaker 1: college football in the state of Texas. But I said, uh,
- 2:28Speaker 1: and it's not even a supplement, it's a great partner
- 2:31Speaker 1: with it is the actual website. And I mentioned if
- 2:34Speaker 1: you go to Texas Football dot com, there's lots of
- 2:36Speaker 1: great UH things you can read and and and several
- 2:40Speaker 1: of those are free. And then there are those that
- 2:42Speaker 1: are there for subscribers. Now correct me if I'm wrong.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Anybody that subscribes UH online at Texas Football dot com
- 2:50Speaker 1: also gets a copy of the magazine, don't they?
- 2:52Speaker 2: You get a copy of the magazine too, Yeah, Uh,
- 2:55Speaker 2: don't worry about that.
- 2:55Speaker 3: You get the whole hog with it. You get our
- 2:57Speaker 3: you get all the content on textab all dot com.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Let me get them our streaming content. Are all the
- 3:03Speaker 3: live games that we've got on text and live too.
- 3:05Speaker 2: So yeah, you get the.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Whole halt, and that leads me into asking you to
- 3:09Speaker 1: give you a chance to pump it up.
- 3:10Speaker 2: You You've got too.
- 3:12Speaker 1: In addition to the text and live telecasts that come in,
- 3:15Speaker 1: you have too full on produced high school games of
- 3:20Speaker 1: the week, one on Thursday night, one on Friday night,
- 3:22Speaker 1: one of which you're calling the play by play on
- 3:24Speaker 1: on the Friday night. But don't folks about those two
- 3:26Speaker 1: games that are coming up on Thursday nights and Friday
- 3:28Speaker 1: nights this fall.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah, we've got on Thursday nights we're going to have
- 3:32Speaker 3: our Rising Game of the Week. Rising is kind of
- 3:34Speaker 3: our recruiting vertical, and so it's going to be focused.
- 3:38Speaker 2: A lot more online.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Star Power's going to be focused more on like the recruits,
- 3:40Speaker 3: and so our recruiting team, Greg Powers, Mallory Hartley, Carter
- 3:44Speaker 3: Yates are going to be out there, you know, calling
- 3:46Speaker 3: the game and stuff like that with a specific focus.
- 3:48Speaker 3: We're covering in the high school football and the way
- 3:50Speaker 3: that you come to expect from Dave Campbells. But also
- 3:52Speaker 3: if you're just interested in watching some of the three
- 3:55Speaker 3: four five star recruits, we're going to be spotlighting them
- 3:58Speaker 3: Friday nights are going to be uh, Friday night football,
- 4:01Speaker 3: uh where with myself and Matt Stepp in the booth
- 4:05Speaker 3: calling one of the best high school football games in
- 4:08Speaker 3: the States that week, and and and kind of a
- 4:09Speaker 3: true game of the week. I'm sure we'll touch on recruiting,
- 4:13Speaker 3: because especially like now in high school football's impossible to
- 4:16Speaker 3: disentangle those two things. But our focus is going to
- 4:19Speaker 3: be on, hey, here's a great high school football game.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Wh't you locked in with us?
- 4:22Speaker 3: And so yeah, we're we're really excited about that, and
- 4:24Speaker 3: and and giving people what they want. It's going to
- 4:27Speaker 3: be you know, uh on on Friday night, people on
- 4:29Speaker 3: football on Thursday night.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Under way this year with Dave Campbell's.
- 4:35Speaker 1: And and I might add all of that content is
- 4:39Speaker 1: free with the subscription.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Correct correct, I will say, yes, all of that is free.
- 4:44Speaker 3: But also the Thursday night and Friday night games of
- 4:47Speaker 3: the week, so the rising game of the Week on
- 4:48Speaker 3: Thursday and Friday night football game of the week on Friday.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Uh, those are free as well. Those are free for everybody.
- 4:53Speaker 3: We just want you to jump in the pool, come
- 4:55Speaker 3: hang with us, and stuff like that we.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Want to give away. We would certainly love for you
- 4:59Speaker 2: to subscribe.
- 5:00Speaker 3: That would be awesome, but also just you know, come
- 5:02Speaker 3: on and hang with us on Friday night and and
- 5:04Speaker 3: come watch us some good high.
- 5:04Speaker 1: School I always want to give folks the opportunity to
- 5:08Speaker 1: do that, for them to be able to jump in
- 5:11Speaker 1: and uh and subscribe to they want to. Now, I
- 5:14Speaker 1: speaking of the website, I wanted to ask your thoughts
- 5:18Speaker 1: on a piece. Are are a good friend and your
- 5:20Speaker 1: colleague Mike Craven Rights? And the headline is the twenty
- 5:25Speaker 1: twenty six college football season is critical for several Texas
- 5:28Speaker 1: a FBS coaches. Here are the five head coaches under
- 5:31Speaker 1: the most pressure. Uh and and and uh. I've known
- 5:36Speaker 1: Mike for many years, and I think the world of him.
- 5:38Speaker 1: I also think sometimes he has all He's an incredibly
- 5:42Speaker 1: talented writer. He can have all of the emotional grip
- 5:48Speaker 1: of a googless uh uh you know devil he can.
- 5:52Speaker 2: He can really.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Write without a soul at all. And so when it
- 5:57Speaker 1: comes to a piece like this, Uh, he's really good
- 6:00Speaker 1: at being able to say, look, you know you've got
- 6:02Speaker 1: You've got teams out there that much is expected of them,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and if they're not uh performing, These coaches are going
- 6:09Speaker 1: to be on the hot seat. He has no proclivities
- 6:12Speaker 1: at all about saying was this his idea to come
- 6:14Speaker 1: up with this particular piece.
- 6:16Speaker 3: It was and and and here's here's what I can
- 6:19Speaker 3: say unequivocally about my career. And he will call balls
- 6:22Speaker 3: and strikes like he is. He's a guy who who
- 6:25Speaker 3: who will well will call it right down that he
- 6:26Speaker 3: will call it like he season. So yeah, we he's
- 6:28Speaker 3: got a piece up about the five FBS coaches, uh
- 6:31Speaker 3: that you know under the most pressure heading into the season,
- 6:34Speaker 3: you know, you know, on the hot seat.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Whatever you wan call.
- 6:36Speaker 3: I think I would draw two different distinctions. You've got
- 6:41Speaker 3: guys who are their jobs are on the line. If
- 6:44Speaker 3: they have a poor season, they're probably heading for the
- 6:46Speaker 3: unemployment line and stuff like that. And I would put
- 6:49Speaker 3: the top two on his list, Scottie Walden at UTEP
- 6:51Speaker 3: and Dave Randa at Baylor in that mix and both
- 6:55Speaker 3: these guys, you know, I think for for Randa, I
- 6:58Speaker 3: think right now.
- 6:59Speaker 2: You would call all this like one last gass.
- 7:02Speaker 3: I think there was a number of people, including myself,
- 7:05Speaker 3: who was kind of surprised he was retained for this
- 7:07Speaker 3: year coming off of last year.
- 7:08Speaker 2: But they're giving him one more shot. They've loaded up
- 7:11Speaker 2: in the.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Transfer portal, especially former Mester Texas football DJ Lagway from
- 7:14Speaker 3: Florida to kind of save his job. But like, make
- 7:17Speaker 3: no mistake, another six and five record, another you know,
- 7:20Speaker 3: or six and six record, kind of down the middle,
- 7:22Speaker 3: he's going to mark the end almost certainly for David Randon.
- 7:24Speaker 2: The other one is Scotty Walden.
- 7:26Speaker 3: And and you know, look he's he's five and nineteen
- 7:29Speaker 3: since he took over in twenty twenty four. And I
- 7:32Speaker 3: love Scotty Walden. I think he is a whale of
- 7:35Speaker 3: a guy and a whale of a coach. And I
- 7:37Speaker 3: think a lot of this is just how hard playing
- 7:40Speaker 3: and simple. It's just it's a hard, hard, you know,
- 7:44Speaker 3: program to do it. Now he feels good about getting
- 7:46Speaker 3: it going into twenty twenty six. But I also think
- 7:49Speaker 3: that you know, he he understands the score, and he
- 7:52Speaker 3: understands that this is a that college football is a
- 7:54Speaker 3: business that's a cadgy. The other thing where I would
- 7:57Speaker 3: say is that these guys need to win people from
- 8:01Speaker 3: saying bad things about them on the internet, you know,
- 8:04Speaker 3: I mean, and so he for example, number three on
- 8:07Speaker 3: his list is Steve Sarkisian, uh down there in Austin.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I don't think anybody is under any illusion that Steve
- 8:13Speaker 3: Sarkisian's job is at risk. Right, of course, if things
- 8:17Speaker 3: can happen, if they were to go oh to twelve,
- 8:19Speaker 3: like maybe things could get but like, I don't think
- 8:22Speaker 3: there's any realistic expectation that Steve Sarkisian's job is on
- 8:25Speaker 3: the line. Same thing I think goes with Joey McGuire
- 8:28Speaker 3: at Texas Tech. I don't think anybody thinks that Joey
- 8:30Speaker 3: McGuire is going to be out of a job if
- 8:31Speaker 3: they have a poor season. But I do think that
- 8:34Speaker 3: there is high expectations and when you fall short, if
- 8:39Speaker 3: you were to fall short of those expectations, there's a
- 8:42Speaker 3: cumulative effect of the heat, let's just say.
- 8:45Speaker 2: And it kind of builds.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Uh So, these guys are under pressure to perform, But
- 8:50Speaker 3: I don't think that necessarily they they are worried about
- 8:52Speaker 3: getting a pink slip on their on their desk or
- 8:54Speaker 3: anything like that they would have coourse.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I think it's more like, hey.
- 8:57Speaker 3: High expectations, you probably better up to it, or people
- 9:00Speaker 3: are going to start talking about you in ways you
- 9:02Speaker 3: don't like.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Do you think that Sonny Dyke's at TCU is kind
- 9:05Speaker 1: of in between those two categories. I mean it would
- 9:07Speaker 1: it would have to take a big falling off for
- 9:09Speaker 1: them to decide to part company with him by the
- 9:12Speaker 1: same token, you know, they're expecting more of him than
- 9:16Speaker 1: what has been delivered of late.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Yeah, he's the strange one in this category, you know,
- 9:21Speaker 3: because I think you're right, he kind of splits the
- 9:23Speaker 3: difference here because look, overall, his resume is he can
- 9:28Speaker 3: say something that I believe no other team for coach
- 9:32Speaker 3: in the state can say, which is he's coaching the
- 9:35Speaker 3: national championship game.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Like he's he's took tc to a national championship game
- 9:38Speaker 2: in this decade.
- 9:39Speaker 3: But at the same time, since since then, TCU is
- 9:44Speaker 3: fourteen and thirteen in Big twelve play, they've been absolutely average,
- 9:48Speaker 3: dead bang average there, and that is not what they've
- 9:50Speaker 3: wanted to do. And more importantly, I think that Mike
- 9:53Speaker 3: writes about this on the site, TC's kind of had
- 9:56Speaker 3: a bad, bad habit of losing games they shouldn't and
- 10:00Speaker 3: that I think doesn't bode well for him. I I
- 10:03Speaker 3: don't know, it was one of those things where he's
- 10:05Speaker 3: probably one of those guys where like I said, it's
- 10:08Speaker 3: if Steve Starkesian were to go like four and eight,
- 10:11Speaker 3: I think that he would still be the head coach
- 10:13Speaker 3: of Texas next year. If TCU were to go like
- 10:16Speaker 3: three and nine or four and eight, then suddenly it
- 10:19Speaker 3: becomes an active question for Sunny Dyke's uh and and
- 10:23Speaker 3: his his.
- 10:24Speaker 2: His nury and forward.
- 10:25Speaker 3: I think that's probably he probably splits that difference between
- 10:28Speaker 3: true hot seat the scene is preheated. Let's say that
- 10:33Speaker 3: you know what I mean, it's it's it's it's it's
- 10:34Speaker 3: preheatd it's.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Been defrosted, which is the tougher job in the state
- 10:39Speaker 1: of Texas right now, UTIP or Sam Houston Man it's
- 10:46Speaker 1: it's I would say it's probably U TEP simply because
- 10:49Speaker 1: we've seen Seim. He's been win at a high level,
- 10:52Speaker 1: right We've seen them, Uh, you know there's a team
- 10:54Speaker 1: that has won you know, ten games, and they've they've
- 10:57Speaker 1: been a really good program. Furthermore, they do not have
- 11:01Speaker 1: the hurdles literally geographically that you that you TEP has
- 11:05Speaker 1: of getting kids out to El Paso to go play there.
- 11:08Speaker 1: The other thing about it is that I think that
- 11:11Speaker 1: the conference makeup.
- 11:13Speaker 2: I think kind of uh kind.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Of works in the favor of Sam Houston, you know,
- 11:20Speaker 3: you know, being in Conference USA gives them a little bit.
- 11:24Speaker 2: More of a a.
- 11:26Speaker 3: I think there's a little bit more affiliation with the
- 11:28Speaker 3: state of Texas there, and you can convince people, hey,
- 11:31Speaker 3: come play in the state of Texas.
- 11:32Speaker 2: And except the Mountain West, and you're like, okay, well, like,
- 11:38Speaker 2: I don't know, TCU was there at one point.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Like it's it's a strange it's a strange confluence of
- 11:43Speaker 3: that regard.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So I think that there's a lot.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Of Bill Teners at UTEP that make it harder to
- 11:48Speaker 3: get talent out there than it would be there to Hampston.
- 11:51Speaker 1: That's a look at college football across the state of Texas.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Coming up will shift our focus to high school football
- 11:57Speaker 1: in a weekly conversation with Greg Tepper Dave Campbell's Texas
- 12:00Speaker 1: Football Magazine.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Not only.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Are the Doobie Brothers performing tonight Movie Center, the great
- 12:10Speaker 1: Santana will be there. Carla Santana, We'll be there. This
- 12:14Speaker 1: is one of sant Heanna's biggest hiss. The uh always
- 12:18Speaker 1: popular and well aged. So uh, that's it. It's good
- 12:27Speaker 1: uh to have that as we continue our conversation here
- 12:31Speaker 1: with the editor in chief of Dave Campbells Texas football magazine,
- 12:33Speaker 1: Great Tipper.
- 12:34Speaker 2: All right, let's jump to high school.
- 12:36Speaker 1: I want to start off with the news that came
- 12:38Speaker 1: down last week and you're you're your partner and colleague,
- 12:41Speaker 1: Matt step laid it out pretty succinctly about the changes
- 12:45Speaker 1: for the UIL State football Championships. Now, if you're want
- 12:48Speaker 1: to be with changes, what changes changes in the schedule.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Although it's still four days from Wednesday to Saturday, sixteenth
- 12:54Speaker 1: to the nineteen the December and his step rights the
- 12:58Speaker 1: Wednesday format relatively unchanged. The one A six man games
- 13:02Speaker 1: will be the first two games this year. It's the
- 13:04Speaker 1: Division two state championship game that'll be played Wednesday night,
- 13:08Speaker 1: and that alternates every year. It'll be too AD one
- 13:10Speaker 1: next year. And then, as he writes, Thursday night is
- 13:14Speaker 1: when the changes start to be made. Instead of the
- 13:16Speaker 1: two A Division one game opening at eleven am, they
- 13:19Speaker 1: start with a three A Division two state title game,
- 13:22Speaker 1: then the two A Division one state championship game in
- 13:25Speaker 1: the middle, followed by the three A D one game
- 13:28Speaker 1: Thursday night Friday. Here's where the major change noticeable change
- 13:33Speaker 1: will happen. Four A, five A, and six A Division
- 13:37Speaker 1: two state championship games will start it off. The six
- 13:40Speaker 1: A Division two state title game will have a Friday
- 13:44Speaker 1: night instead of Saturday afternoon or Saturday night as it's
- 13:48Speaker 1: been and it's the first time since the single site
- 13:50Speaker 1: format was implemented that a six A state title game
- 13:53Speaker 1: will be played on Friday, and the Saturday schedule will
- 13:56Speaker 1: feature the same schedule as Friday, but the day will
- 13:59Speaker 1: feature the D one schools. So there will be a
- 14:02Speaker 1: four A Division one state championship game on Saturday, and
- 14:07Speaker 1: that'll be SAD in the middle game Saturday afternoon, the
- 14:09Speaker 1: five A D one game eleven o'clock in the morning
- 14:12Speaker 1: on Saturday, and the six AD one game at seven
- 14:16Speaker 1: o'clock Saturday night. I abut your thoughts on this change.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Yeah, and and and so I want to make sure
- 14:23Speaker 3: go to tex football dot com see the whole schedule.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Sometimes it's get to visualize it, but basically on Thursday,
- 14:28Speaker 3: the big changes are gonna be on Friday and Saturday,
- 14:30Speaker 3: where Friday is gonna be Division two day and they're
- 14:33Speaker 3: gonna go five A, four A, six A, and then
- 14:36Speaker 3: they're gonna take that same thing and they're gonna do
- 14:37Speaker 3: for Division one on Saturday, and so the six A
- 14:40Speaker 3: games will be on on.
- 14:42Speaker 2: On Friday night and on Saturday night. Uh.
- 14:45Speaker 3: To make sure I have a hard divide between what
- 14:48Speaker 3: I know and what I speculate.
- 14:50Speaker 2: So here's I know.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Because I've had conversations with folks in the u I
- 14:54Speaker 3: L about this. There has been concern att state about
- 15:00Speaker 3: a phrase that I got to learn about, ingress and egress, okay,
- 15:03Speaker 3: which is basically people coming in and people going out.
- 15:07Speaker 2: And if you've been.
- 15:08Speaker 3: To at and C Stadium on a Saturday, those concourses
- 15:12Speaker 3: get really crowded because you've got a huge crowd leaving
- 15:15Speaker 3: and another huge crowd coming in. And I know the
- 15:18Speaker 3: UIL has told me, they've said the Fire Marshal has
- 15:21Speaker 3: gotten on to us, like they've said, hey, you've got
- 15:23Speaker 3: to you've got to figure things out, and they try
- 15:25Speaker 3: to do their best, but with that many bodies there,
- 15:28Speaker 3: that is a challenge. So that is one thing that
- 15:29Speaker 3: I know that they wanted to address, and this is
- 15:32Speaker 3: a way to address it. So that is the thing
- 15:34Speaker 3: the reason that I know now I'm gonna move hard divide.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Here's me speculating. Okay, I don't have this confirm. Okay,
- 15:41Speaker 3: I do know, you know I last year there were
- 15:45Speaker 3: a number of altercations. There are a number of fights
- 15:47Speaker 3: in the stands and in the concourses between these you know,
- 15:51Speaker 3: you've got schools, especially when you've got schools that are
- 15:54Speaker 3: from the same part of town.
- 15:55Speaker 2: You know last year.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Last year you had North Shore and ce King who
- 15:58Speaker 3: are basically neighbors in our rival that were sharing the
- 16:01Speaker 3: same state side of the same You've got Duncanville and
- 16:03Speaker 3: De Soto, you know, on the same side, and stuff
- 16:05Speaker 3: like that. There have been fights in the stands that
- 16:09Speaker 3: I think, Uh, the UIL it was, it went little
- 16:13Speaker 3: viral online. I think it's the UILE thinks it's a
- 16:15Speaker 3: bad look. I think again, speculate that they think that
- 16:19Speaker 3: this would help with that and kind of ease that
- 16:22Speaker 3: because you're kind of separating the two biggest classifications. Furthermore,
- 16:26Speaker 3: the other thing that and this is me speculating again
- 16:30Speaker 3: from a TV perspective, this is kind of exactly what
- 16:33Speaker 3: you would want if you were scheduling this like the
- 16:37Speaker 3: NFL schedules, then you would put stick, say on prime
- 16:40Speaker 3: time on Friday night and on Saturday Night, right, Yep,
- 16:43Speaker 3: Like there's a reason that the Dallas Cowboys are on
- 16:45Speaker 3: Sunday Night Football all the time, and ain't because they're
- 16:48Speaker 3: winning a ton, It's because they're the biggest brand names, right.
- 16:51Speaker 3: And so again speculating by setting this up, you now
- 16:56Speaker 3: have a prime time six A matchup on and on
- 17:00Speaker 3: Saturday night and if you, if you, you know, if
- 17:03Speaker 3: the UIL is concerned about viewership and about ratings, that
- 17:07Speaker 3: would be a pretty good way to boost that viewership
- 17:10Speaker 3: and those ratings. So I think that that is that
- 17:12Speaker 3: is certainly something that that's from to mind when when
- 17:15Speaker 3: this first came down.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Well, and to your point with regard to some of
- 17:18Speaker 1: the uncomfortable feelings that happened, I know from working in
- 17:22Speaker 1: the network television booths, and you have as well that
- 17:26Speaker 1: on that on that that level, on that concourse level
- 17:30Speaker 1: where the television boots are. It's in the two hundred
- 17:33Speaker 1: section the way that it is set up because they
- 17:35Speaker 1: really don't have any other way to set this up.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Fans who are there safe for the first game of
- 17:40Speaker 1: a session that are sitting in that middle section, which,
- 17:42Speaker 1: to be honest, is a better vantage point than sitting
- 17:44Speaker 1: down low you can see the field better. So there's
- 17:47Speaker 1: people in there for a game going on, and then
- 17:50Speaker 1: the people for the next game are queuing up in
- 17:53Speaker 1: that lobby, in that concourse, and it gets real.
- 17:56Speaker 2: I'll tell you what.
- 17:57Speaker 1: For those of you who suffer from claustrophobia, you don't
- 18:00Speaker 1: want to be anywhere near that when that happens. That
- 18:02Speaker 1: gets that gets pretty scary. And then there is a reluctance.
- 18:07Speaker 1: And it doesn't matter if it's Inner City, it doesn't
- 18:09Speaker 1: matter if it's Panhandle, it doesn't matter if it's South Texas.
- 18:12Speaker 1: There's a reluctance by some folks to give up their
- 18:15Speaker 1: seat even though their team is done, they're playing, they're
- 18:18Speaker 1: supposed to clear out and let people come in for
- 18:21Speaker 1: the next thing. And there's there's a bit of inconsideration
- 18:23Speaker 1: that goes on there, and so nerves get a little
- 18:25Speaker 1: bit afraid for people who want access to the seats
- 18:28Speaker 1: they hold tickets for, and then those who who want
- 18:32Speaker 1: to stick around and watch from their spot the next
- 18:34Speaker 1: game of a session.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Am I right? Yeah?
- 18:36Speaker 2: I think so.
- 18:37Speaker 3: I think that there are you know you can you
- 18:39Speaker 3: can when you buy a ticket, you get to.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Sit anywhere you want and that's awesome.
- 18:44Speaker 3: The problem is that you get to sit anywhere you want,
- 18:46Speaker 3: including a seat that somebody else might want, and and
- 18:48Speaker 3: that especially when your team has left it. I say,
- 18:52Speaker 3: I believe a lot of those, as you said, some
- 18:53Speaker 3: of those altercations happened because people aren't going to give
- 18:56Speaker 3: up their seats or something like that, or hey move,
- 18:58Speaker 3: I want to sit there, like I'm gonna watch my
- 19:00Speaker 3: team or my kid or something like that. And so
- 19:03Speaker 3: I think the U I l by by doing this.
- 19:05Speaker 3: It's by going five A, then four A than six A.
- 19:08Speaker 3: You've got four a crowd and six a crowd passing.
- 19:11Speaker 3: So a smaller crowd on the way out with a
- 19:14Speaker 3: bigger crowd on the way in will alleviate a lot
- 19:18Speaker 3: of those concerns, especially you know, if you want to
- 19:21Speaker 3: think about it that like if there is a Dallas
- 19:23Speaker 3: area team, if you're in Dallas, like you're you're likely
- 19:26Speaker 3: to just stick around and keep keep watching the game.
- 19:28Speaker 2: But if you've got to go back.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Let's just say hypothetically, part that you were to be
- 19:31Speaker 3: in the state championship game, well, it's about a three
- 19:33Speaker 3: three and a half hour drive to Penola County. You
- 19:35Speaker 3: might want to get on the road a little bit,
- 19:36Speaker 3: and so I think that there are this is going
- 19:38Speaker 3: to be a really interesting experiment. The one will say,
- 19:41Speaker 3: and this is a you know, I think that the
- 19:43Speaker 3: u nothing. One thing I've learned about the UIL is
- 19:47Speaker 3: that nothing is ever set in stone, and so I
- 19:51Speaker 3: think the UIL is going to try this. Uh, if
- 19:54Speaker 3: there were if it didn't solve the problems that they wanted,
- 19:57Speaker 3: or hypothetically if attendance were to take a huge dip
- 20:01Speaker 3: or something like that, then I think that they would
- 20:03Speaker 3: rethink it and go back to the drawing board. As
- 20:05Speaker 3: far as the schedules, it's a big reason why they
- 20:07Speaker 3: haven't been back to Houston. There's one hundred thousand sands
- 20:10Speaker 3: less the one year they were at NRG as opposed
- 20:13Speaker 3: to what it usually is on average in Arlington. So
- 20:16Speaker 3: you're right, they're responsive in that. Okay, before we get done,
- 20:20Speaker 3: we want to continue our high school previews.
- 20:22Speaker 1: We're on the five A. Okay, the Southern. Now we
- 20:24Speaker 1: can close up the feature. No, you know, let's listen.
- 20:28Speaker 1: When you've got a state champion at the six A
- 20:31Speaker 1: level dropping down in classification with a lot of people,
- 20:34Speaker 1: including one of the best running backs in the state
- 20:36Speaker 1: and Sarrod Baker coming back. You don't have to be
- 20:40Speaker 1: fleany to figure it out that they're going to be
- 20:42Speaker 1: the preseason choice.
- 20:44Speaker 3: They're the number one team in our five A D
- 20:46Speaker 3: one rankings and for all their I mean, look, this
- 20:49Speaker 3: is a team like I think people may not think
- 20:51Speaker 3: about like I don't know why, but I think that
- 20:54Speaker 3: people maybe have a disconnect about De Soto and the
- 20:57Speaker 3: world dynasty. But they've won three titles in four years.
- 21:00Speaker 3: That is, in my estimation, the very definition of the dynasty.
- 21:03Speaker 3: And now they are dropping down a classification where they
- 21:06Speaker 3: will be theoretically the big fish in the small pond. Now,
- 21:10Speaker 3: I will say this, you mentioned Sarad Baker. Their defensive
- 21:12Speaker 3: line is going to be really, really good as well.
- 21:15Speaker 3: But I have a couple of concerns about them, you know,
- 21:19Speaker 3: especially I think kind of on the edges. You know,
- 21:22Speaker 3: they graduate Booby Feaster, who's now at USC. They need
- 21:27Speaker 3: to find a quarterback. That's gonna be a question. Although
- 21:29Speaker 3: they always just snap the ball to Sarad Baker. That's
- 21:31Speaker 3: a pretty good plan. The other but I will say this,
- 21:34Speaker 3: it's like you you look at this at the at
- 21:37Speaker 3: the the five ad one rankings man, there is star
- 21:41Speaker 3: power everywhere.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Okay, Smithson Valley, Let's not forget.
- 21:45Speaker 3: The two time raigning five AD one champs, right they are.
- 21:49Speaker 3: They're gonna be different in the way that like a
- 21:51Speaker 3: lot of the big Hog Molly's they've got and their
- 21:53Speaker 3: strength that they've had in the trenches situated, but they
- 21:57Speaker 3: have something that they haven't had in this run back
- 22:00Speaker 3: back Totaate Championship, which is a known commodity. A star
- 22:03Speaker 3: at quarterback in ty Can Newtson. By the way, speaking
- 22:05Speaker 3: of stars at quarterback, you've got frisk a lone star
- 22:08Speaker 3: with right, they're Trey Wright, They're outstanding junior quarterback.
- 22:12Speaker 2: He's a star. Oh yeah.
- 22:14Speaker 3: By the way, Richmond Randall's moving up to five A
- 22:17Speaker 3: D one and they have a guy who is on
- 22:18Speaker 3: the gate pole covering the magazine and Landon Williams kallis
- 22:21Speaker 3: the Texas committe He's unbelievable. Denton Ryan's going to be
- 22:24Speaker 3: in the mix with their new head coach, Shane Tollison.
- 22:27Speaker 3: If you're looking for a team that is kind of
- 22:30Speaker 3: like a newcomer, a party crasher, because we named a
- 22:32Speaker 3: lot of brand names. Flugerville, Weiss by Stock now they
- 22:38Speaker 3: are going to be really really good. Coach Malcolm Hill
- 22:41Speaker 3: his second year there and they are absolutely loaded with
- 22:45Speaker 3: frontline talent and our recruiting people go nuts about Weiss.
- 22:49Speaker 3: That is a team that I want you to buy
- 22:51Speaker 3: stock in.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Okay, And in five eight two, since Randall has moved
- 22:55Speaker 1: over to five A D one, it would be logical
- 22:58Speaker 1: at South Oakcliff would seemingly holds an annual ticket to
- 23:01Speaker 1: playing there in Arlington would be the preseason joint.
- 23:05Speaker 3: I mean, I don't even think about another has consecutive
- 23:10Speaker 3: state championship games, like like saying about the program that
- 23:13Speaker 3: have never done that, okay, Like like there's tons of
- 23:16Speaker 3: the very best programs in Texas high school fall Highland
- 23:20Speaker 3: Park has never done that, Okay, Like some of the
- 23:22Speaker 3: best programs in texantized school fotball history have done it,
- 23:24Speaker 3: haven't done it.
- 23:25Speaker 2: South Oakcliff has. They have some questions.
- 23:29Speaker 3: I'm interested to see, especially what happens kind of at
- 23:32Speaker 3: the at the skills spots. They need to have some
- 23:34Speaker 3: some some dynamic playmakers. But I know they've got some
- 23:36Speaker 3: young guys they are really excited about. One of these
- 23:38Speaker 3: really interesting They've got quarterback in Jaydan Williams like he
- 23:41Speaker 3: was the real difference maker for them last year. He's
- 23:43Speaker 3: back for his senior year. I like what Argyle brings
- 23:46Speaker 3: as probably the favorite region one. They get the transfer
- 23:50Speaker 3: from prosper Wille of Growth Hayes Hackney. He will throw
- 23:53Speaker 3: to one of the best receiver corps in the state
- 23:55Speaker 3: out wide with Julian Calwell. Even the way Port and
- 23:59Speaker 3: Asius Groves looms as well. Now moving back over to
- 24:01Speaker 3: the other side of the bracket, they're going to be
- 24:03Speaker 3: interesting because I think they're gonna run the ball really well.
- 24:05Speaker 3: But I like they're for the first time kind of
- 24:07Speaker 3: in this run of there. They got to replace some
- 24:10Speaker 3: big pieces up front, and then by the way the
- 24:13Speaker 3: teams looking that I feel like nobody's talking about is Bernie. Okay,
- 24:17Speaker 3: Bernie in reagion four, I think they're the I think
- 24:20Speaker 3: they're in my estimation, the clear region for a favorite.
- 24:23Speaker 3: They bring back Grant Sweeney, who is one of the
- 24:24Speaker 3: state's leading passers last year.
- 24:26Speaker 2: They are I think going to be a real problem there.
- 24:29Speaker 3: And whoever they they were, I think a Bernie Portnations
- 24:31Speaker 3: Growth State semifinal would be box office stuff.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Really really good.
- 24:35Speaker 3: So I think five eight two actually is more wide
- 24:38Speaker 3: open than five AD one, even though five A eight
- 24:41Speaker 3: one I think has the.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Star power edge.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and and could you see a semi final in
- 24:46Speaker 1: five A D two between our Gyle and Southolkcliffe like
- 24:49Speaker 1: we saw a few years ago.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Oh one hundred percent.
- 24:53Speaker 3: My questions for our guy are going to be on
- 24:54Speaker 3: the defensive side, but their offenses, they're gonna have.
- 24:57Speaker 2: One of the very best offenses in Texas.
- 24:59Speaker 3: The other team keep an on Terrell after a breakout
- 25:02Speaker 3: year last year, can they do it again? Is this
- 25:04Speaker 3: the new normal for Terrell? Got a reload on defense.
- 25:07Speaker 3: But that's a Tigers program that I think.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Is on the rise.
- 25:10Speaker 1: He's Greg Tepper, editor in chief of Day Campbell's Texas
- 25:12Speaker 1: Football magazine. We have Tuesdays with TEP each week. Next
- 25:16Speaker 1: week we finished the high school previews with the largest
- 25:19Speaker 1: of the classification, six A, and as TEP pointed out,
- 25:22Speaker 1: six A D two will be a Friday night, the
- 25:23Speaker 1: championship D one on Saturday, So anyway, we'll look forward
- 25:27Speaker 1: to that. Hey, appreciate the time as always. Thanks, and
- 25:30Speaker 1: we'll do it again next week. Looking forward to it, guys.
- 25:32Speaker 1: All right, that's Greg Tepper. We have more coming up
- 25:35Speaker 1: here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of
- 25:36Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app.
