- 1:00:10Welcome to the City Center podcast from
- 1:00:12West Palm Beach. I'm Jerry Marcela.
- 1:00:16Few cities have gone through the changes
- 1:00:17that West Palm Beach
- 1:00:18has seen in recent years.
- 1:00:21Once a quiet little city in the shadows
- 1:00:23of places like Miami, Tampa, and Orlando,
- 1:00:27West Palm Beach is now a hotspot of
- 1:00:29cultural and financial
- 1:00:30prosperity, firmly on the map
- 1:00:33with famous
- 1:00:34destinations from around the globe.
- 1:00:36But if we could turn back the hands of
- 1:00:38time even further, we
- 1:00:40would find a West Palm Beach
- 1:00:41far different from what we could imagine.
- 1:00:44A place that 50 years ago
- 1:00:45lived life a little differently.
- 1:00:49On the podcast today, we have a guest
- 1:00:50that started a career working for the
- 1:00:52city of West Palm Beach 50 years ago.
- 1:00:56And he's here today to share a
- 1:00:57perspective about our city that is a half
- 1:01:00century in the making.
- 1:01:02Greg Mihalko, welcome to the podcast.
- 1:01:05Thank you. I'm happy to be here. I
- 1:01:06appreciate the opportunity.
- 1:01:08Well, we appreciate you being here. I
- 1:01:10mean, 50 years with the
- 1:01:11city, that is no small feat.
- 1:01:14Actually, we double-checked it and I am
- 1:01:17the longest tenured employee.
- 1:01:19So it's actually a little over 50 years.
- 1:01:21It's 50 in August 12th. So it's 50 years,
- 1:01:24two months, and a few days.
- 1:01:25That is nutty. Okay, so 1974 is when you
- 1:01:30started. Tell us about
- 1:01:31how you came across the job
- 1:01:34and what it was like during those very
- 1:01:36early days working for the city.
- 1:01:38So I moved here in 1973 and I started off
- 1:01:43in construction with no
- 1:01:45basic skills or anything.
- 1:01:46I was right out of high school. I was 18
- 1:01:47and I was digging
- 1:01:50ditches for construction.
- 1:01:52And at that point, construction went a
- 1:01:54little low and they
- 1:01:56were laying people off.
- 1:01:58So eventually I ended up losing that job
- 1:02:01and got hired on by somebody else.
- 1:02:03But again, because construction was low,
- 1:02:06I ended up losing that one.
- 1:02:08So I was actually out
- 1:02:09of work for three months.
- 1:02:11And I had I actually after after almost
- 1:02:15three months, I had interviews with FPL
- 1:02:17and the city of West Palm Beach.
- 1:02:21The city of West Palm
- 1:02:21Beach actually hired me first.
- 1:02:24I don't remember exactly how I found out
- 1:02:26about it, but I remember thinking, well,
- 1:02:30you know, a city job
- 1:02:31can be pretty secure.
- 1:02:34Construction, you don't work when it's
- 1:02:35raining, you know, you don't have the
- 1:02:38holidays, you don't
- 1:02:39have different things.
- 1:02:40And city, you know, city have pension,
- 1:02:43you have holidays,
- 1:02:44you have vacation days.
- 1:02:47And I'm going to get paid
- 1:02:4852 weeks out of the year.
- 1:02:51So I was making 450 an hour when I was
- 1:02:54working construction and I started here
- 1:02:56at 235, I think it was an hour.
- 1:03:00Oh, my goodness.
- 1:03:01Less than what is. But in my
- 1:03:03head, again, I had benefits.
- 1:03:06I had health
- 1:03:06insurance. I had all that stuff.
- 1:03:09And I'm working 52 weeks out of the year.
- 1:03:11I didn't have to worry about putting
- 1:03:12three months aside for rainy days and,
- 1:03:16you know, slow seasons or
- 1:03:19hurricanes and things like that.
- 1:03:20And to give perspective, I mean, I mean,
- 1:03:21I could imagine that I'm not sure off the
- 1:03:23top of my head, but a gallon of gas was
- 1:03:26probably 60, 70 cents
- 1:03:28or something like that.
- 1:03:29Yeah. When I started when
- 1:03:29I was 14, it was 25 cents.
- 1:03:32I think it was like 60 or 70 when I was,
- 1:03:34you know, by the time here.
- 1:03:35Yeah. Now you said that you were thinking
- 1:03:37about construction gig and then you sort
- 1:03:39of saw that the construction construction
- 1:03:41was a little slow around here.
- 1:03:43Was it a slow period of time? There
- 1:03:44wasn't a lot of a lot of growth.
- 1:03:46It was no, it wasn't. It
- 1:03:49wasn't a lot of growth.
- 1:03:50And the actually the construction job
- 1:03:53that I was on was bringing houses in.
- 1:03:56And there were duplex or triplexes and
- 1:03:59they were cadding them together, back
- 1:04:00together and they were moving them from
- 1:04:02one location to another.
- 1:04:04And I don't remember what that other
- 1:04:05location was going to be used for, but
- 1:04:07they were decent houses.
- 1:04:09So instead of tearing them down, they
- 1:04:10moved them to, they were
- 1:04:11moving them to another location.
- 1:04:14And that job started falling through as,
- 1:04:16you know, the market, I
- 1:04:18guess, was falling down.
- 1:04:20And being young, I didn't understand
- 1:04:22exactly everything that was going on.
- 1:04:24But I knew it was
- 1:04:25really hard to find a job.
- 1:04:28It's hard to imagine when we look at the
- 1:04:30city now about a time when things were
- 1:04:32slow as far as building and growth.
- 1:04:36Yeah, it is. I mean, looking at it,
- 1:04:39looking at what's going on around here
- 1:04:41now, I really seriously wonder how we
- 1:04:45keep up with it, how planning and
- 1:04:48engineering, you know, keep up with all
- 1:04:50the building that's going on, because
- 1:04:52it's a tremendous job to do all of that.
- 1:04:56And the landscape has
- 1:04:58changed. I mean, it has changed.
- 1:05:02Sure. No, yeah. I mean, just any kind of
- 1:05:06photograph from that period of time.
- 1:05:08And, you know, the 70s, I mean, it is 50
- 1:05:10years ago, almost a half century, but it
- 1:05:12is, it isn't like forever.
- 1:05:15It wasn't like 18 something or anything.
- 1:05:17It's fairly, you know,
- 1:05:18it's in recent memory.
- 1:05:20And yes, the city has changed so
- 1:05:22drastically over those years.
- 1:05:24City Hall was in a small building on
- 1:05:25Second Street when I
- 1:05:26started here. Wow. Wow.
- 1:05:29The engineering department was a
- 1:05:30beautiful two, two or three story
- 1:05:33building that was on 7th Street.
- 1:05:36Yeah. Where down by the railroad tracks
- 1:05:39were 7th Street dead ends off
- 1:05:40of Dixie by the railroad track.
- 1:05:42It was in a beautiful building there,
- 1:05:44beautiful hardwood floors.
- 1:05:45I mean, just the landscape, the stairway
- 1:05:48going up, the building was phenomenal.
- 1:05:51Yeah. Unfortunately not there anymore,
- 1:05:53but that's where the
- 1:05:53engineering department was.
- 1:05:56When the old City Hall was on Second
- 1:05:58Street, I never really got beyond the
- 1:06:00basement because my most of my workings
- 1:06:05with anything in City Hall was with the
- 1:06:07printing department,
- 1:06:08which was in the basement.
- 1:06:09Yeah. So if we needed something printed
- 1:06:11or something like that, I would run down
- 1:06:13there and pick it up for him since I
- 1:06:14worked in this area.
- 1:06:15I started off as a laborer and I was
- 1:06:18working in the downtown area, what we
- 1:06:21called the Cove at the time, which was
- 1:06:23from Banyan to Okeechobee.
- 1:06:26And then we had different parks like
- 1:06:28Okeechobee Boulevard. We
- 1:06:29did Chillingworth Park.
- 1:06:34You know, so we had other small, some
- 1:06:35outer areas, but our main focus was down
- 1:06:37here because the library was here and we
- 1:06:40had Klamata Street at the time.
- 1:06:42Did you actually live in West Palm Beach?
- 1:06:44I did when I first moved here, yes.
- 1:06:46Okay. In 74, I take it that it was more a
- 1:06:51more sense of local community. It wasn't
- 1:06:53like we were sort of sprawling. It was
- 1:06:54just the folks who lived here sort of
- 1:06:56dealt with each other.
- 1:06:58Yeah. I don't know a whole lot of people
- 1:07:01that – well, there was a lot of people
- 1:07:04that I know that did not
- 1:07:05live in West Palm Beach.
- 1:07:08But most of the – most of us that I
- 1:07:10worked with, the labor – you know, the
- 1:07:12labor end of it, a lot of us did live
- 1:07:14either in West Palm or just
- 1:07:17right outside of West Palm.
- 1:07:18Sure.
- 1:07:19Some of them lived in Riviera Beach or
- 1:07:20Lake Worth or something like that.
- 1:07:22Sure. You know, I lived in Palm Beach
- 1:07:24County at the same period of time. This
- 1:07:26story is not about me. It's about you.
- 1:07:27But the – what – I lived up in
- 1:07:30Jupiter, Jupiter, Dequesta area, and man,
- 1:07:32getting down to West Palm – that was a
- 1:07:34big deal. That was a trip.
- 1:07:35You're coming down to West Palm, going
- 1:07:37downtown to go to Berdynes and go to
- 1:07:39those stores that are down here.
- 1:07:41And there was a sense of separation that,
- 1:07:44you know, you lived up in this community
- 1:07:46and you weren't going to go down there.
- 1:07:47That seems to have really disappeared
- 1:07:49over the years. It's like – we're like
- 1:07:50one big Metroplex now.
- 1:07:52Yeah. It's a lot – well, definitely a
- 1:07:54lot easier to get around. I mean, 95 is
- 1:07:56finished and 95 was just
- 1:07:58a dead end and whatnot.
- 1:08:00That's right.
- 1:08:01It was funny. But, yeah, I mean, even for
- 1:08:05those in West Palm to head up to Jupiter
- 1:08:07was like, well, what do
- 1:08:08we want to go up there for?
- 1:08:09Right.
- 1:08:10There was not really much for us to go up
- 1:08:12there for. We stayed here.
- 1:08:14We had the Palm Beach Mall.
- 1:08:17You know, we had the auditorium at the
- 1:08:19time. We had the baseball stadium.
- 1:08:22So just about anything you wanted was
- 1:08:25pretty much local anyway, even though
- 1:08:27there was a lot more now.
- 1:08:30But at the time, we
- 1:08:31had everything we needed.
- 1:08:33When – in the 50 years ago, was it a
- 1:08:36younger community? Was
- 1:08:37it a lot of retirees here?
- 1:08:39What kind of profile did
- 1:08:41you recall from that period?
- 1:08:45Well, my first few years, you know, the
- 1:08:48first two or three years as a laborer, I
- 1:08:50was not really
- 1:08:50dealing with the community.
- 1:08:52Right.
- 1:08:52I was in the parks. I was on the
- 1:08:54roadways. I was doing
- 1:08:55what we needed to do.
- 1:08:57But as I became a supervisor and started
- 1:08:59dealing with people, it wasn't – I
- 1:09:03would say there were a lot
- 1:09:05less retirees here at the time.
- 1:09:07Yes. And, you know, people have stayed
- 1:09:10here. Obviously, it was a, you know,
- 1:09:13great place to live.
- 1:09:14There was a lot going on around here. And
- 1:09:16as things increased, I
- 1:09:17think people realized that.
- 1:09:19So they stayed here. And you started
- 1:09:21getting more and more people that were
- 1:09:23retired because, what?
- 1:09:25They lived in that house all their life.
- 1:09:27Right.
- 1:09:28I've talked to people that have grown up
- 1:09:30in that house from their childhood.
- 1:09:32Yeah.
- 1:09:33You know, families that were here that
- 1:09:35maybe their parents were involved
- 1:09:38politically or their parents were, you
- 1:09:42know, had – were business
- 1:09:43owners and things like that.
- 1:09:45And, you know, they had
- 1:09:46businesses on Klamata Street.
- 1:09:48And I've somehow met up with them for
- 1:09:50whatever reason they were calling the
- 1:09:52city and had to go talk to them.
- 1:09:54But, you know, you got to get to talking
- 1:09:55and find out that, oh, yeah, you know, my
- 1:09:58grandfather owned a bakery on Klamata
- 1:10:00Street and, you know, things like that.
- 1:10:02Sure.
- 1:10:02So, you know, I've met a
- 1:10:04lot of people that way.
- 1:10:05Sure.
- 1:10:06That's really – was really interesting.
- 1:10:08It kept the job interesting, for sure.
- 1:10:10So as you move through, you know, the 70s
- 1:10:13until later 70s, what sort of changes did
- 1:10:16you see in play? Would
- 1:10:17things change for you?
- 1:10:19Well, the biggest changes, I think,
- 1:10:22really happened, like in the 90s when
- 1:10:25they started changing to downtown.
- 1:10:28When we moved the library, when the city
- 1:10:31hall was built over on Banyan Street
- 1:10:35across from the Banyan Garage, when they
- 1:10:37built that city hall,
- 1:10:38there was a big change there.
- 1:10:40Things started changing and the city
- 1:10:42started growing that way.
- 1:10:44And for folks who may not be familiar
- 1:10:45with that older city hall, not the one
- 1:10:48that we're in now, but it also showed the
- 1:10:49city hall was just across the street from
- 1:10:51what is now is the Palm Beach County
- 1:10:54Center of Government there.
- 1:10:56Right.
- 1:10:57Right. Okay.
- 1:10:58Yeah. It's across from there, almost
- 1:11:00across from their parking garage.
- 1:11:02Right.
- 1:11:02More in line with that. That's where –
- 1:11:05it's there. It's now a
- 1:11:06hotel and restaurant.
- 1:11:07Right. Right.
- 1:11:08And businesses on the bottom.
- 1:11:10And then we had – we also had in that
- 1:11:14area where the Chamber of Commerce is,
- 1:11:16when I started here, we actually called
- 1:11:19that Flamingo Park, and
- 1:11:22that was a senior center.
- 1:11:26So we had a building there, and it was
- 1:11:28staffed, and they played – you know,
- 1:11:30they had checkers and
- 1:11:31chess and card games.
- 1:11:33And it was organized and shuffleboard,
- 1:11:34and it was a pretty active center for, as
- 1:11:38I said before, not that many retirees,
- 1:11:40you know, compared to what it is now.
- 1:11:42It was still really active.
- 1:11:44It was a nice active center.
- 1:11:46And the park that we call Flamingo Park
- 1:11:49that's on Dixie, Dixie and Park Place,
- 1:11:53had a small building there, and it ran a
- 1:11:56summer program out of there for kids.
- 1:11:58Right.
- 1:11:59So things have definitely gotten bigger
- 1:12:03and, you know, in some cases better. In
- 1:12:06some cases, sometimes
- 1:12:07bigger is not better.
- 1:12:08I understand. So about 1990, you saw a
- 1:12:11seat – a real change taking place.
- 1:12:13When we started doing the waterfront and,
- 1:12:15you know, started developing all of that
- 1:12:17and, you know, building this city hall
- 1:12:20here, which was later on, you know,
- 1:12:23building this city hall here and things
- 1:12:25like that, things started growing.
- 1:12:27That's when I noticed the city getting
- 1:12:30busier. You're now drawing more people in
- 1:12:33with Clamatus by Night.
- 1:12:35You had the – you know, all the
- 1:12:38waterfront stuff going on, you know,
- 1:12:40getting ready to build that, which I love
- 1:12:43that, by the way, because I got to travel
- 1:12:44with the landscape architects all over
- 1:12:48– all over the state looking for trees.
- 1:12:50You know, we went to Homestead. We went
- 1:12:51to the middle of the state.
- 1:12:52We went all over the place.
- 1:12:53We spent weeks looking for all of the
- 1:12:55streets down there. And as a certified
- 1:12:57arborist, that was
- 1:12:57just my dream. I loved it.
- 1:13:00But, you know, it was – things were
- 1:13:02really blowing up and people were taking
- 1:13:07more of an interest in West Palm.
- 1:13:08And, you know, and then we started having
- 1:13:10City Place develop, you know, and that
- 1:13:13whole area there, you know,
- 1:13:16reconstruction in that whole area there.
- 1:13:18So those were probably the biggest
- 1:13:21changes that I've seen.
- 1:13:23I've heard that around that period of
- 1:13:26time, Clamatus wasn't as busy at night as
- 1:13:30it is now. Is that – do
- 1:13:31you recall it being that way?
- 1:13:32Clamatus was very slow.
- 1:13:34Really?
- 1:13:34Yeah. After five or six o'clock, you can
- 1:13:37pretty much walk around here and throw a
- 1:13:40rock and not hit anybody.
- 1:13:41Holy cow.
- 1:13:42Yeah. It was pretty dead. We had some
- 1:13:46really, really tall
- 1:13:47Washingtonian palms there at the time.
- 1:13:50And we used to trim them. We don't trim
- 1:13:53palm trees anymore for your health, but
- 1:13:55we used to trim them.
- 1:13:56And we would have to come in after
- 1:13:58everything closed. So we would come in
- 1:13:59about midnight to trim them.
- 1:14:02And for a period of time, it was okay. It
- 1:14:05was nice. There was hardly anybody there.
- 1:14:08Then as Clamatus Street started getting
- 1:14:11more popular and different bars started
- 1:14:14opening and restaurants started opening,
- 1:14:16it got a little bit harder for us to keep
- 1:14:20coming in here and trimming because we
- 1:14:21would have to hit that time period when
- 1:14:25everything closed down
- 1:14:27and we could work without worrying about
- 1:14:29somebody walking underneath us as we were
- 1:14:31dropping the fronds and everything.
- 1:14:33And I was so happy when they did
- 1:14:35re-landscaping there that we didn't have
- 1:14:37to worry about those anymore.
- 1:14:38But now for a long period of time,
- 1:14:41Clamatus was very, very slow.
- 1:14:45You touched on something. You mentioned
- 1:14:47that you were fearful of hurting somebody
- 1:14:49with the palm fronds.
- 1:14:51Where I was headed was, gee, middle of
- 1:14:53the night, Clamatus, kind of quiet. Was
- 1:14:55there a problem with crime back thing?
- 1:15:00Well, they say there was, but we never
- 1:15:04had a problem as we were working.
- 1:15:06But it wasn't as, I would say, it wasn't
- 1:15:09as safe as it is now.
- 1:15:12So we've made an improvement.
- 1:15:14Oh, absolutely.
- 1:15:16Absolutely.
- 1:15:17That's great. That's great.
- 1:15:18We were talking earlier about some of the
- 1:15:20places that people used to congregate at
- 1:15:23and have dinner and have lunch.
- 1:15:26Tell me a little bit about that because
- 1:15:28that's usually where you see sort of the
- 1:15:30profile of the community,
- 1:15:32the culture that the area had.
- 1:15:34Tell me a little bit about that.
- 1:15:36Clamatus Street had Woolworths. I mean,
- 1:15:39you wouldn't think, but the Woolworths,
- 1:15:40the little diner inside Woolworths was a
- 1:15:43spot for a lot of the business owners on
- 1:15:46Clamatus Street to like Mrs. Perry.
- 1:15:48They owned the locksmith shop, her and
- 1:15:50her sons owned the locksmith shop right
- 1:15:53next to Sewell Hardware.
- 1:15:54And some of the guys from Sewell
- 1:15:55Hardware, I'd see them in there.
- 1:15:57And it was close enough.
- 1:15:59We had a half an hour for lunch.
- 1:16:01And if we happened to be working in that
- 1:16:03area, it was actually close enough that I
- 1:16:05could run out there.
- 1:16:06And if they knew you, they kind of
- 1:16:08started putting your order in as they saw
- 1:16:09you walking in and have it ready for you
- 1:16:12almost by the time you were sitting down,
- 1:16:13you'd be able to eat real fast and run
- 1:16:15back and get back to work in time.
- 1:16:18So it was the culture was
- 1:16:20people knew other people.
- 1:16:23That's another big difference is now
- 1:16:26everything is so big.
- 1:16:28Everything is so rushed that people don't
- 1:16:31get time to know the other people.
- 1:16:35And you were able to go in there.
- 1:16:39And like I said, you know, if the people
- 1:16:42behind the counter would see you and they
- 1:16:44start putting your order in right away
- 1:16:45because they knew they knew pretty much
- 1:16:47what you were going to get.
- 1:16:48That's great. It sounds like I'm
- 1:16:50listening to a scene out of a 1960s
- 1:16:52sitcom or something.
- 1:16:54Almost was it was almost like walking in
- 1:16:56a happy days or something.
- 1:16:58It was funny.
- 1:17:00That one. And there was
- 1:17:01a place called the hut.
- 1:17:03And it was down where Phillips Point is
- 1:17:05where Trinity Park is on Flagler Drive
- 1:17:07close to Okeechobee Bridge.
- 1:17:09It was just a big building with a big
- 1:17:11open up kind of front
- 1:17:13awning kind of thing.
- 1:17:15Just a counter.
- 1:17:16And that was it.
- 1:17:17It was a drive up.
- 1:17:18You went up, you ordered your stuff and
- 1:17:19sat in your car and ate.
- 1:17:21You know, if we were mowing the grass
- 1:17:22down here or doing something down here,
- 1:17:24you took a riding mower down and you
- 1:17:25grabbed the hot dog, sat in a riding
- 1:17:27mower, ate the hot dog and went back to
- 1:17:29work right after lunch was over.
- 1:17:30That's really cool.
- 1:17:31You know, we had it was nice working in
- 1:17:34this area because we had those little
- 1:17:36things that so many
- 1:17:38other crews didn't have.
- 1:17:40You know, we it was kind of a kind of a
- 1:17:42perk of the work in the area.
- 1:17:44Now, we talked a lot about downtown.
- 1:17:46Did you do anything up
- 1:17:47in the Northwood area?
- 1:17:49I was mainly focused
- 1:17:51downtown when I started.
- 1:17:52And then then I started running crews.
- 1:17:56They saw potential in me.
- 1:17:58So I started running crews when the
- 1:18:00supervisor was out or on vacation or
- 1:18:03maybe resigned for some reason.
- 1:18:06They would put me in place till they till
- 1:18:08they found somebody else.
- 1:18:10And so I got to work up in the north end.
- 1:18:12So I got to work at Fogelman Park,
- 1:18:14Sullivan Park, Coleman, all those parks.
- 1:18:18And it gains, you know,
- 1:18:19all of those over the years.
- 1:18:21And then as I became a next level up
- 1:18:25supervisor, I had all of those parks.
- 1:18:29So I had all the parks in the city.
- 1:18:31So I got to work in either mowing the
- 1:18:34grass in them or inspecting
- 1:18:36them for some reason or whatever.
- 1:18:38All the parks throughout the city that
- 1:18:40were, you know, that we had.
- 1:18:44And there's, you know, like, of course,
- 1:18:47there was big changes down in Druerer
- 1:18:48Park when they redeveloped
- 1:18:49the north end of the park.
- 1:18:51Gaines Park had big developments, you
- 1:18:53know, with the ball fields and, you know,
- 1:18:55redoing the ball fields.
- 1:18:56And now they're going through and they're
- 1:18:58redoing the rec
- 1:19:00center up there now again.
- 1:19:02So that's going to be
- 1:19:03really nice once that's done.
- 1:19:05Coleman Park has an addition onto it and
- 1:19:07remodeling and everything.
- 1:19:09That's going to be really nice.
- 1:19:10So we've taken that bond
- 1:19:13money and put it into good use.
- 1:19:15And I think the residents are going to be
- 1:19:18really happy with the
- 1:19:19results once they're finished.
- 1:19:20That's fantastic.
- 1:19:21Okay.
- 1:19:22Let me ask you this sort of all those
- 1:19:24kind of mind bending questions.
- 1:19:27You have a perspective
- 1:19:28that very few people have.
- 1:19:29You've been here
- 1:19:30literally a half century.
- 1:19:33What message if you could magically go
- 1:19:35back in time and talk to young Greg as he
- 1:19:37was starting his career,
- 1:19:39what would you tell yourself now that
- 1:19:41you've been here for 50 years?
- 1:19:43What message?
- 1:19:47Maybe the biggest thing I would have done
- 1:19:49a little differently.
- 1:19:51And I don't know if it would have changed
- 1:19:53my perspective on how I
- 1:19:55wanted to take my career path.
- 1:19:59But I think maybe the biggest thing I
- 1:20:01might have done would be go back to
- 1:20:04school and get my either
- 1:20:06associates or bachelor's degree.
- 1:20:08And either business or some
- 1:20:11kind of bachelor's degree.
- 1:20:15Because that I mean
- 1:20:17everybody looks for that.
- 1:20:19And sometimes that's great.
- 1:20:22Sometimes experience is just as good.
- 1:20:27But just as a afterthought, I don't know,
- 1:20:33I might have done that, but I was never a
- 1:20:35college type person.
- 1:20:39I always wanted to do something.
- 1:20:41I always wanted to be out in the field.
- 1:20:43I always wanted to work.
- 1:20:45I liked being outside.
- 1:20:46I always liked being outside.
- 1:20:48And you're never going
- 1:20:50to get rich doing that.
- 1:20:52But you can be rich being happy.
- 1:20:55And if you like what you're doing and you
- 1:20:57feel like you're actually doing something
- 1:21:00for somebody and serving the residents
- 1:21:03and you feel like you're doing the best
- 1:21:05job that you can, I think sometimes that
- 1:21:08outweighs some other things.
- 1:21:10And so I don't like I said, I don't know
- 1:21:12if I would have changed
- 1:21:13my career path at all.
- 1:21:15And but I think the I think that might
- 1:21:19have been something
- 1:21:20that I would have done.
- 1:21:21Sure.
- 1:21:22Well, Greg, we have an opportunity here.
- 1:21:24You have the mic.
- 1:21:26You have the opportunity to send a
- 1:21:27message not only to people who work here
- 1:21:30at the city, but also people who live
- 1:21:32here at the city of West Palm Beach.
- 1:21:34What would be the message you'd like to
- 1:21:35share with our friends looking back over
- 1:21:38your years working for the city?
- 1:21:40Well, looking back, those that are still
- 1:21:43here and a lot of people that have left
- 1:21:47if they happen to be
- 1:21:49listening to this podcast.
- 1:21:50I just want to say I have many, many
- 1:21:54people I'm going to miss.
- 1:21:55I've thoroughly enjoyed working with so
- 1:21:58many of the people here and they've been
- 1:22:01dedicated, hardworking and just have
- 1:22:05always the people that I've worked with,
- 1:22:08especially in the parks and the parks
- 1:22:10department, the employees that I've
- 1:22:12worked with and the
- 1:22:12supervisors that I've worked with.
- 1:22:16I'm going to say this and they know it.
- 1:22:18I put them through hell sometimes.
- 1:22:20We had jobs to do that
- 1:22:22just nobody else wanted to do.
- 1:22:24There were nasty jobs.
- 1:22:26Nobody liked them.
- 1:22:27And that team came together every single
- 1:22:30time and got it done.
- 1:22:33We moaned and groaned and hollered with
- 1:22:35each other and we would get in each
- 1:22:38other's faces and we'd say our pieces and
- 1:22:42turn around, walk away and go out.
- 1:22:44I have to work and
- 1:22:45have a beer or something.
- 1:22:46You know, I just we were
- 1:22:48a team and we still are.
- 1:22:49We still are a team and I have the
- 1:22:51deepest respect for those guys over there
- 1:22:53and other departments.
- 1:22:55I know people they're
- 1:22:56hardworking and to the citizens.
- 1:22:59I want them to realize that that when we
- 1:23:02say no, we can't do it.
- 1:23:04It's not because we don't want to.
- 1:23:07It's not because
- 1:23:07we're trying to be nasty.
- 1:23:09It's because we either have an ordinance
- 1:23:11that tells us we can't or we just don't
- 1:23:14have it in our budget to do it.
- 1:23:16And we have to go buy a budget.
- 1:23:19Otherwise, it's like your own home.
- 1:23:22If you don't go buy your budget, you're
- 1:23:23going to go bankrupt.
- 1:23:25That's right.
- 1:23:25So I know it sounds bad when you tell
- 1:23:30somebody no, that I can't
- 1:23:32do that or I won't do that.
- 1:23:35As far as like let's use trimming trees,
- 1:23:37for example, we have an ordinance that we
- 1:23:40have to go by and we have NCA 300.
- 1:23:42So we have to go by and as a certified
- 1:23:45arborist bound by those standards.
- 1:23:49I have to go by those
- 1:23:50standards when we trim a tree.
- 1:23:52So the same token body ordinance were
- 1:23:55bound by those ordinances.
- 1:23:57So I just I just want them to know that
- 1:23:59this is a dedicated city.
- 1:24:03They are they are dedicated to the people
- 1:24:05and to do the right things.
- 1:24:08And we try our best.
- 1:24:11Greg, I couldn't imagine you saying it
- 1:24:12any better than that.
- 1:24:14There is no way to condense everything
- 1:24:16you've done over the past five decades
- 1:24:19into just a very short podcast.
- 1:24:21But we've covered some
- 1:24:23things that are important.
- 1:24:24We've got an opportunity to look back a
- 1:24:25little bit on how our city has changed
- 1:24:27and how the future is
- 1:24:29really very bright for us.
- 1:24:31And for that, I want to thank you for 50
- 1:24:34years of dedicated service to
- 1:24:35the city of West Palm Beach.
- 1:24:37I know I have a lot of voices behind me
- 1:24:39that are saying the exact same thing.
- 1:24:41Thank you so much for being a part of
- 1:24:43what we do here in the city and making
- 1:24:45the city the
- 1:24:46wonderful place it is to live.
- 1:24:49Thank you very much.
- 1:24:50I thank you for this opportunity.
- 1:24:51And it's been it's been a long run and
- 1:24:55it's going to be an emotional goodbye.
- 1:24:57And by the way, my last day is Friday.
- 1:24:59Heading to Jacksonville to be with my
- 1:25:01grandkids and my kids and
- 1:25:03enjoying the rest of my life.
- 1:25:05Oh, there's nothing better.
- 1:25:06And hey, I want to thank all of you who
- 1:25:08are listening today.
- 1:25:09We appreciate you being here and enjoying
- 1:25:11our conversation with Greg.
- 1:25:13Please feel free to like and subscribe.
- 1:25:15We're here all the time.
- 1:25:16We want to hear from you as well.
- 1:25:17Leave us some comments.
- 1:25:19Let us know what kind of
- 1:25:20things you'd like us to cover.
- 1:25:21Again, this is Jerry Marcello and this
- 1:25:23has been the City Center podcast from
- 1:25:26West Palm Beach, Florida.
- 1:25:27And we'll be seeing you soon.
