- 0:00Speaker 1: That sweater is fire. Is that for Chattanooga? Yeah, this
- 0:05Speaker 1: is my alma mater, bro. What were you guys, the
- 0:08Speaker 1: Tennessee Chattanooga? Mocs. Moccasins. Moccasins. Yeah, but it's Mocs. Moccasins.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mocs. But Mocs for sure. Nobody wanted to put it
- 0:17Speaker 1: on a collection plate to think of some different names? No, no. Yeah,
- 0:20Speaker 1: it's kind of.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Similar to our next guest, you know, we're going to
- 0:24Speaker 3: have on the show, you know, because he has a
- 0:26Speaker 3: couple of names.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Right, right, right. We're going to shorten it up. What up, y'all?
- 0:29Speaker 4: This is Chris Spencer and Teal, and you're watching Get
- 0:32Speaker 4: to the Point. And please follow, like, and subscribe to GTTPod.
- 0:39Speaker 1: That's who he is. How you feeling?
- 0:53Speaker 2: Like I look.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Which is? I feel good. I feel good.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I look good.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Well, I feel good about our guest. Yes.
- 1:01Speaker 4: This dude, talent is an understatement. You may know him
- 1:05Speaker 4: from the internet or as my uncle used to say,
- 1:08Speaker 4: the intranet church, church material is some of the stuff
- 1:12Speaker 4: that's kind of.
- 1:12Speaker 3: I can't wait because I grew up in the church,
- 1:15Speaker 3: so I'm. Can't wait to hear some of the relatable
- 1:20Speaker 3: church stories. Yes.
- 1:22Speaker 1: You may know him from All Deaf and all the
- 1:23Speaker 1: different platforms he's been on.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Yeah, he's got, this dude wears so many hats. Content creating, writing.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Producing, directing. And he's married with two kids.
- 1:38Speaker 4: I don't know how he does all that and still
- 1:40Speaker 4: finds time to be a good husband and father.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Let's welcome Kevin Stage. You said it right. But again,
- 1:46Speaker 1: his name is Real name is Kevin Fredericks.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Dr.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Kevin Fredericks.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Doctor?
- 1:52Speaker 1: He's a doctor.
- 1:53Speaker 3: And not like Cheyenne Bryant doctor. Yeah, I was going
- 1:56Speaker 3: to say, wait a minute. He got some degrees. Is
- 1:58Speaker 3: he really a doctor?
- 1:59Speaker 4: Not like Dre, not like Jay, and not like Cheyenne.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I know Cheyenne personally. Can we get her on the show?
- 2:06Speaker 1: It's your show. It's our show. We can get anybody
- 2:08Speaker 1: you want. But it's your show. I'm asking you, can
- 2:10Speaker 1: we get it on the show? I'm saying don't call
- 2:11Speaker 1: no hospital looking for her. What up, Kev?
- 2:17Speaker 2: Hey, Kevin.
- 2:18Speaker 1: What up, man? Kevin Frederick.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Yeah. But again, earlier we were asking, I was like, yo,
- 2:23Speaker 3: is it, how does people pronounce your name?
- 2:25Speaker 1: Because people mess my name up all the time. How
- 2:27Speaker 1: do you say your name anyway? It's Terrell, but people
- 2:30Speaker 1: want to go with. Like Terrell, Texas.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:32Speaker 3: But people have heard it butchered so many years. on
- 2:36Speaker 3: all these media networks, they always say Terrell, but I'm like, no,
- 2:38Speaker 3: there's no E at the end. I'm like, but it's
- 2:41Speaker 3: still Terrell. I'm like, no, it's like Michelle. Like Michelle
- 2:43Speaker 3: has an E at the end. My name doesn't.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Have an E at the end, so it's not Terrell,
- 2:48Speaker 1: it's Terrell.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I was in, I ran into one time, I was
- 2:53Speaker 3: in Beverly Hills, I was going to Chipotle and they
- 2:55Speaker 3: always roaming around there. So I kept going in there
- 2:57Speaker 3: and then they spotted me.
- 2:59Speaker 2: They said, oh my God, yo, there's Terrell, there's Terrell.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I'm like, no, it's Terrell.
- 3:04Speaker 3: And they're like, no, no, no. no, I know your
- 3:07Speaker 3: name is Terrell. I'm like, kids, like, for real, my
- 3:10Speaker 3: name is Terrell. They go, no, it's not. It's always
- 3:13Speaker 3: been Terrell. I'm like, my mama named me Terrell. I
- 3:16Speaker 3: know my name.
- 3:17Speaker 2: You just said my mama named me Terrell.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Did I?
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yeah. Uh-huh.
- 3:22Speaker 1: See?
- 3:23Speaker 2: You've been lying. We got to the bottom of it.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Right. You don't even know your name now.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:28Speaker 1: It's confusing. But it's Terrell. Like, yeah, it's Terrell. But, yeah,
- 3:32Speaker 1: we have Kevin. Kevin. Kevin. For the sake of the show,
- 3:36Speaker 1: I'm just going to... Kev.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Kev is safe. Kev. Kev is safe.
- 3:39Speaker 1: How you doing, man?
- 3:40Speaker 2: I'm good, man. How are you?
- 3:41Speaker 1: I'm so proud of you.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Thank you. Thank you, Chris.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I mean, when I say grind.
- 3:45Speaker 2: But listen, his.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Grind came out of nowhere.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Literally, he went from high school basketball to the All-Star game.
- 3:53Speaker 2: What? Literally.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Kev, would you agree your ascent is a little different
- 3:59Speaker 4: than anybody else's? Because usually we've seen guys go open mic,
- 4:02Speaker 4: and then he's middle in this club, and then now
- 4:05Speaker 4: he's a headliner, and then, oh, he just did Comic View,
- 4:07Speaker 4: and like.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Where did you come from? Right, yeah.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I swear to God, I looked up. No, you're right.
- 4:14Speaker 1: You're right.
- 4:14Speaker 5: It's been a, I think my career has not had
- 4:17Speaker 5: a one big moment. So there's not like, you know.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Like Tiffany Haddish, for example, had been working for a
- 4:22Speaker 2: long time.
- 4:23Speaker 5: But Girls Trip, you can point to like, oh, she's
- 4:26Speaker 5: out of here. But she was on the Carmichael show
- 4:27Speaker 5: before that. And in clubs, you could see her.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Kevin Hart, too.
- 4:30Speaker 1: We saw the build. You saw the build.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Think like a man. Yes.
- 4:34Speaker 5: You can point to a lot of people having like
- 4:36Speaker 5: a moment. But mine has just been like a war
- 4:38Speaker 5: of attrition. I've just been like three, four videos a day.
- 4:42Speaker 5: This breaks, you know, COVID, keep your distance. Even when
- 4:46Speaker 5: you ask me what they like about me or where
- 4:47Speaker 5: they found me, there's not even a consensus. Some people
- 4:50Speaker 5: have known me since my kids were five and three.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Some just found out about me two weeks ago.
- 4:55Speaker 1: They've been living under a plant.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yeah. They've been living.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Under a plant. If they don't know who you are,
- 5:01Speaker 1: they wouldn't know who you are by the time we
- 5:03Speaker 1: end this.
- 5:03Speaker 5: Hopefully.
- 5:04Speaker 1: So where are you from?
- 5:05Speaker 2: So, It's a varied story, but I was born in
- 5:09Speaker 2: El Paso, Texas. And yes.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Ain't nobody in El Paso.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Ain't nobody in El Paso.
- 5:14Speaker 1: You're not even- Hispanic.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I'm one-eighth Mexican.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Yes.
- 5:18Speaker 2: What? Fun fact.
- 5:19Speaker 1: One-eighth?
- 5:20Speaker 5: I am one-eighth Mexican. My granddad is half. So my
- 5:24Speaker 5: mom's a quarter and I'm one-eighth Mexican. But that has
- 5:26Speaker 5: nothing to do with why we're in El Paso.
- 5:28Speaker 1: No.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Un poquito.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Just a little bit. One-eighth. Los Angeles. La Cienega.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Santa Clara.
- 5:35Speaker 5: All that stuff. All the cities in California, I could say.
- 5:39Speaker 5: But yeah, so I was born in El Paso. My
- 5:41Speaker 5: mom got married. So I moved from El Paso. My
- 5:45Speaker 5: dad was in the military. My stepdad. Fun fact, Terrell.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Fun fact. I love fun facts.
- 5:50Speaker 5: My real dad's family is from Alexander City, Alabama, where
- 5:54Speaker 5: you are the most famous person to ever come out
- 5:55Speaker 5: of there.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Look at his face.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Every time I see them, they're like, you know the
- 5:59Speaker 2: Terrell daddy, T.O. dad? You know when I went down
- 6:02Speaker 2: there the first time, they showed me your house? You
- 6:04Speaker 2: are like.
- 6:05Speaker 5: The only thing that people talk about from there, but
- 6:07Speaker 5: that's my real dad's side of the family.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Are you serious?
- 6:10Speaker 2: Dad's serious.
- 6:10Speaker 5: I just saw him on that side of the family
- 6:13Speaker 5: at my show in Birmingham a few weeks ago.
- 6:14Speaker 2: And he was like, we were just down there to
- 6:16Speaker 2: your daddy. We saw him. I think, did your dad
- 6:19Speaker 2: just pass away recently?
- 6:19Speaker 1: Yeah, he did.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Sorry for your loss. I appreciate it. He told me that.
- 6:24Speaker 5: Like, you know, he was like, they talk about you like, oh,
- 6:26Speaker 5: we seen him playing football. We was like, pride and joy.
- 6:30Speaker 5: When you're from Alexander City, you the man. Terrell Owens
- 6:33Speaker 5: is the man.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Don't act like you don't know. Are you over here blushing? No, no,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I am.
- 6:37Speaker 3: As dark as I, black as I am, I'm blushing
- 6:40Speaker 3: a little bit.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Yeah. No, you the shit in Alexandria, Alabama.
- 6:45Speaker 3: No, no, but for real, it's like, people in the city, like,
- 6:49Speaker 3: especially my family, my cousin, she was just You know,
- 6:53Speaker 3: trying to be a city councilman, you know, in the
- 6:56Speaker 3: political space. And they don't really have anything to recognize
- 7:00Speaker 3: me in my city. And so they're trying to do
- 7:02Speaker 3: a lot of stuff behind the scenes to, like, let
- 7:04Speaker 3: people know when they come into the city of, like.
- 7:07Speaker 1: That's where I'm from. Give them that. Yeah, I should,
- 7:11Speaker 1: I should. A bigger version of that. Yeah, I know.
- 7:13Speaker 3: But yeah, it's been a hard sell to get them
- 7:17Speaker 3: to do anything for me in Alexander City.
- 7:19Speaker 2: But the people, people there.
- 7:21Speaker 1: The people know. But again, you know, we got to,
- 7:25Speaker 1: you know what it is. Politics or whatever.
- 7:27Speaker 2: For sure, for sure.
- 7:28Speaker 3: But you would think that, yeah, like you said, I'm
- 7:30Speaker 3: the most famous person.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Is anybody else famous from Alexander City?
- 7:36Speaker 4: I don't think so cousin to cousin woman pretty soon
- 7:38Speaker 4: but yeah yeah shout out to Buffy yeah what up
- 7:41Speaker 4: Buffy good luck yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 5: But yeah so my dad was in the military so
- 7:44Speaker 5: we moved around from El Paso to Virginia North Carolina
- 7:50Speaker 5: back to El Paso and then I lived in Washington
- 7:52Speaker 5: State for 13 years and then I moved to LA
- 7:54Speaker 5: 13 years ago so I just usually say El Paso
- 7:57Speaker 5: to shorten it out but when I moved to LA
- 7:59Speaker 5: I said I came from Washington because that's where I
- 8:01Speaker 5: just live so people think I am from Washington right
- 8:04Speaker 5: But when you're a military kid, you don't want to
- 8:06Speaker 5: get into the whole thing.
- 8:07Speaker 1: And then where did the stand-up start?
- 8:09Speaker 5: So I technically started stand-up first when I was 16
- 8:12Speaker 5: at church. My brother put me up to it. There
- 8:14Speaker 5: was a church talent show, very Lifetime movie, BET movie.
- 8:19Speaker 5: So I did it in high school when I was 16.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Then I just started messing around with it. But what
- 8:24Speaker 5: really helped me is Nate Jackson.
- 8:25Speaker 2: You know Nate. Nate Jackson had a comedy room in Tacoma.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Super funny. Super funny comedy club.
- 8:32Speaker 1: It's a cocky ass name for a comedy club. And
- 8:34Speaker 1: your special.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Your special's called Super Funny with Nate Jackson.
- 8:38Speaker 2: But he's right though.
- 8:39Speaker 1: He's actually super funny.
- 8:40Speaker 2: He called his shot. You killed there, by the way.
- 8:42Speaker 2: One of my favorite sets of all time.
- 8:44Speaker 1: What do you mean?
- 8:45Speaker 2: You came to Nate's room.
- 8:46Speaker 1: You were there? Yes.
- 8:48Speaker 2: You did this joke. I don't want to spoil the
- 8:50Speaker 2: joke if you still do it.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Do it.
- 8:51Speaker 5: You had a joke where you were talking about Tasmanian Devil.
- 8:53Speaker 5: You ripped up some paper.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Chris, I said, because I would go for years. I
- 8:58Speaker 5: watched every single comedian. When I was learning stand-up, I
- 9:01Speaker 5: watched from the opener to the headliner. And I was like,
- 9:04Speaker 5: I'm watching everybody. See who's good, how they handle hecklers.
- 9:07Speaker 1: And all that.
- 9:07Speaker 2: And when you came, I was like, oh, my God.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Like, there's levels to comedy, and then there's levels to comedy,
- 9:14Speaker 5: and then you were, like, level. I was like, I
- 9:17Speaker 5: don't know how Chris Spencer isn't one of the best
- 9:19Speaker 5: comedians we are seeing. Like, your set was so... Because
- 9:23Speaker 5: Nate's room used to be.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Wait till I tell you this joke. It's crazy.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Nate's room used to be tough because.
- 9:28Speaker 5: half of the back half of the room would always
- 9:31Speaker 5: like be coming basically because it became a club after that.
- 9:34Speaker 5: So they would never pay attention. So you had to
- 9:36Speaker 5: like watching comedians navigate that back half who's at the bar.
- 9:39Speaker 5: They trying to holler at women. They half drunk. And
- 9:42Speaker 5: I'd seen very famous comedians not be able to handle it,
- 9:46Speaker 5: get frustrated, walk off. You had everybody. Otherwise, another tactic
- 9:51Speaker 5: people would use is like a really blue joke. would
- 9:53Speaker 5: get everybody's attention. You came in there with so much confidence,
- 9:57Speaker 5: you didn't do the blue joke, you came in with
- 9:58Speaker 5: such strong material, The whole room was like, oh, this, no,
- 10:02Speaker 5: I'm listening to this dude. And a lot of people
- 10:04Speaker 5: hadn't known you, you know, outside of the movies. They
- 10:06Speaker 5: didn't know you did stand up like that. But obviously
- 10:08Speaker 5: Nate and people who love comedy did. Man, when I
- 10:10Speaker 5: tell you, you crushed.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Do we have any pictures together from back then or anything?
- 10:13Speaker 2: No, I never bothered anybody.
- 10:15Speaker 1: So definitely a student of the game.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 10:18Speaker 5: I was like, it was like, it was like free
- 10:20Speaker 5: gang for like years. I mean, the whole time I
- 10:23Speaker 5: was there, I would watch every single comedian ever. That's
- 10:27Speaker 5: how I met Tony Baker. That's how I saw Tony.
- 10:29Speaker 5: But yeah, that's kind of where I grew. Shout out
- 10:31Speaker 5: to Nate. He gave me 20, 25 minutes every week
- 10:35Speaker 5: for two years.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Wow. That's crazy. You're shocked.
- 10:38Speaker 1: You're shocked, too. Yeah. I'm trying to figure. Listen, when
- 10:40Speaker 1: I say. Because you never know who's in the room.
- 10:42Speaker 1: You never know who's in the room. When I say
- 10:43Speaker 1: I thought he came out, I thought he just came
- 10:45Speaker 1: out of a bottle. This dude, I swear to God.
- 10:49Speaker 1: What about, what kind of bottle? Like a, here I
- 10:52Speaker 1: go right there. Where I'm at? A genie bottle right there.
- 10:55Speaker 1: A genie bottle. Right here. I swear to God, you
- 10:58Speaker 1: came on the scene like, you know what I mean?
- 11:02Speaker 2: Well, see, the other thing is I was.
- 11:03Speaker 1: You're like Dennis Rodman. Or you. You come from some Tennessee, Chattanooga.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Just come out of nowhere. And my brother put you on.
- 11:12Speaker 1: You ran a four and nine or whatever you ran.
- 11:13Speaker 2: My brother put me on to you.
- 11:14Speaker 1: We were 49ers.
- 11:15Speaker 2: My bad, my bad, my bad. That's my bad, Chris.
- 11:18Speaker 1: No, no, no. We tease him.
- 11:20Speaker 4: He was supposed to acknowledge it because he had a
- 11:21Speaker 4: bad 40 time and still became T.O.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Oh, did you? I don't really consider it a bad
- 11:26Speaker 1: 40 times.
- 11:26Speaker 4: For him.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Was it a 49?
- 11:27Speaker 1: No, it was 463. It wasn't that bad.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Oh.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Is that a bad?
- 11:31Speaker 3: You probably could run a 463 right now.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Boy. You could moonwalk a 463.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Me?
- 11:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I couldn't get to that door in 4.6 seconds.
- 11:41Speaker 1: But when he got the ball, he probably ran a 39.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing. Receiver speed, top end speed is
- 11:46Speaker 2: not really what you need.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:47Speaker 5: That's where Al Davis messed up with the Raiders. He
- 11:49Speaker 5: was just like 4-2, 4-2, 4-2. Right, yeah, yeah. You
- 11:51Speaker 5: got to separate. It's in and out of them breaks.
- 11:54Speaker 5: That's what really does. Once you get the ball.
- 11:56Speaker 2: T.O.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Is yak.
- 11:57Speaker 3: You give him a statue, Alexandria.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Alexander. Sorry. Alexander City. Alexander City.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Buffy, I know you didn't make mayor, but it's coming soon. Yes.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Come on, city. Buffy the city slayer.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Get this man a statue. That's hilarious. My aunt is
- 12:16Speaker 2: named Muffy.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Muffy, yeah.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Muffy is her. She's black? She's black. Johnny May is
- 12:21Speaker 2: her birth name, but she go by Muffy.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Johnny May. My neighbors, my neighbor, his sister's name was Muffy. See?
- 12:28Speaker 3: For real.
- 12:28Speaker 1: That's real. Pat Reese, yeah. One of my uncle's best friends.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Is it in the South? Yeah. Everybody got nicknames in
- 12:35Speaker 1: the South.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Pokey. Yeah. Yeah, everything. What was your nickname? I didn't
- 12:40Speaker 1: have a name. I didn't have a nickname.
- 12:41Speaker 2: He had a hard enough time explaining how his real
- 12:43Speaker 2: name is pronounced.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Ain't no time for another nickname.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Yeah, right. Chubb, Lil' Ditt, everything. It's D-I-T. I didn't say,
- 12:51Speaker 1: but it's Lil' Ditt. Lil' Ditt?
- 12:53Speaker 2: Yeah, foot.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Everybody has a nickname.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Foot is crazy.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Bro, yeah, everybody has a nickname when I said it. Bro,
- 12:59Speaker 1: I'm telling you, it's crazy.
- 13:01Speaker 5: But yeah, I didn't operate inside the regular lines. Like,
- 13:03Speaker 5: I was doing stand-up comedy in churches when I moved
- 13:05Speaker 5: to L.A.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:08Speaker 5: All the comedians were like, in order to get on,
- 13:09Speaker 5: I was like, how do you get on stage here?
- 13:11Speaker 5: Because Nate just put me on. I would do 20,
- 13:13Speaker 5: 25 minutes. But here was like a whole different politics.
- 13:18Speaker 5: So the comedians were like, what you got to do
- 13:19Speaker 5: is go to these nights. You won't be able to
- 13:21Speaker 5: go up. You got to hang out till 2 a.m.
- 13:24Speaker 5: You got to go to Denny's. You got to like
- 13:25Speaker 5: build with them.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Fake laugh. Fake laugh.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Stand outside the union in the store, in the laugh factory.
- 13:32Speaker 5: So I told my wife, I was like, okay, babe,
- 13:33Speaker 5: this is how I, first week, this is how I
- 13:35Speaker 5: get on. And she was like, absolutely not. I did
- 13:38Speaker 5: not move here for you to come and be up
- 13:41Speaker 5: out four or five nights a week till 2 a.m.
- 13:44Speaker 4: No.
- 13:45Speaker 2: So absolutely not.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Did you have a regular job at that time?
- 13:48Speaker 2: So when I first moved, I didn't. It was YouTube.
- 13:50Speaker 5: My kids were doing Awesomeness TV, so I was getting
- 13:53Speaker 5: paid to write, direct, produce, and edit their sketches on
- 13:55Speaker 5: Awesomeness TV.
- 13:56Speaker 1: With Brian?
- 13:56Speaker 2: With Brian Robbins, yeah. Wow. Shout out to Brian Robbins. Yeah,
- 13:59Speaker 2: Brian Robbins is the main reason.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Tracy, what up?
- 14:01Speaker 5: Brian Robbins and Tracy Evans are the two main reasons
- 14:03Speaker 5: we moved to L.A. And then I was just doing
- 14:05Speaker 5: YouTube stuff and doing stand-up. But I would only do
- 14:07Speaker 5: stand-up in churches. So nobody really in L.A.
- 14:09Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I didn't know you.
- 14:10Speaker 5: No, because I couldn't get on stage. So I was
- 14:12Speaker 5: just doing churches, churches, churches. I didn't really tour on
- 14:15Speaker 5: my own until 2018. And probably in L.A. I probably
- 14:18Speaker 5: performed in 13 years probably less than 25 times.
- 14:22Speaker 1: No chocolate sundaes, no fat Tuesdays.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I did chocolate sundaes one time. How did you do?
- 14:27Speaker 2: I did great. I did great. It was fantastic. But
- 14:30Speaker 2: it was like a two-year wait. I got my name
- 14:33Speaker 2: on the list. It was like a two-year wait. And
- 14:35Speaker 2: there's no way to speed it up.
- 14:37Speaker 1: No way to expedite.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Unless you go and hang out in case somebody drops off.
- 14:42Speaker 1: With no VIP line.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Ain't no VIP line.
- 14:45Speaker 1: We had this thing called first impressions. Yes.
- 14:47Speaker 4: And literally, you'd be like, when can I get on?
- 14:51Speaker 4: Two months, three months, six months.
- 14:54Speaker 1: What? We will see you in 2096.
- 14:56Speaker 5: It's up to like three years now, I think. Last
- 14:58Speaker 5: time I talked, they were like, it's like two and
- 14:59Speaker 5: a half, three years.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Yeah. So I just was like, well, that doesn't work.
- 15:04Speaker 2: The union, shout out to the union and Enz.
- 15:06Speaker 5: I got the most stage time still to this day
- 15:09Speaker 5: at the union.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I want to get a t-shirt that says, I miss
- 15:12Speaker 1: the comedy union.
- 15:12Speaker 2: I miss it.
- 15:13Speaker 5: Because he was the only one really putting black comedians
- 15:16Speaker 5: on every night of the week. Everybody else has a night,
- 15:19Speaker 5: but Enz was like every night.
- 15:21Speaker 2: To hear, had a room there. He would let me
- 15:23Speaker 2: work out there. To hear more.
- 15:25Speaker 5: So actually, if I take into account the union, it's
- 15:26Speaker 5: probably like 50 times. But all the other clubs, less
- 15:29Speaker 5: than 25 times.
- 15:30Speaker 1: But to see where you are now, you're definitely doing good.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 15:34Speaker 1: You're definitely doing good. You got that $ 500 t-shirt on. Balenciaga.
- 15:39Speaker 1: I know you're doing good. You're killing it. They're paying
- 15:42Speaker 1: probably $ 350.
- 15:42Speaker 5: These pants ain't number 90 bucks.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I bought the same pair of jeans from Paige. But,
- 15:49Speaker 2: you know, these are a little something. A little blitzy.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Your whole outfit probably like $ 1, 500. I mean, come on.
- 15:54Speaker 2: I'm coming to T.O. and Chris Spencer.
- 15:55Speaker 5: I don't know if Chris Spencer got bread. Chris Spencer
- 15:58Speaker 5: ain't even got no socks on.
- 15:59Speaker 2: He made a choice.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I forgot them. Yeah.
- 16:02Speaker 2: He got no laces.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Actually, Jordan is one of my sponsors.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Are these slippers? What is this?
- 16:08Speaker 3: I haven't even seen it. And I'm a brand Jordan guy.
- 16:10Speaker 3: And I haven't even seen those. T.O., what size you wear?
- 16:12Speaker 1: I'm a 14. What size you wear?
- 16:14Speaker 2: I wear 12.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Gentry, take care of these two. I got a guy
- 16:17Speaker 1: named Gentry. See what I'm talking about? See what I'm
- 16:19Speaker 1: talking about? Yeah, yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 4: So, Boom, you're doing the stand-up scene. When did you say,
- 16:25Speaker 4: were you auditioning? Did you have a commercial agent?
- 16:28Speaker 3: Nope.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Or you were making so much, not so much money,
- 16:30Speaker 4: but you were able to feed your family by doing
- 16:33Speaker 4: these other things outside.
- 16:35Speaker 2: So I was... Because this.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Is still pre-social media explosion.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I mean, no. At least before people like me and
- 16:43Speaker 1: him knew about it. Yeah, exactly, exactly. Especially now we're
- 16:46Speaker 1: in the age and era of content creating. Yes, for sure.
- 16:49Speaker 1: And making money from it. Right, and everybody is sort
- 16:51Speaker 1: of like these viral moments just exploding.
- 16:55Speaker 5: I think we can call it It's like before open
- 16:58Speaker 5: algorithms and post open algorithms. I think a lot of
- 17:03Speaker 5: this explosion is when you didn't have to follow somebody
- 17:05Speaker 5: and the algorithm just shows it to you. TikTok, kind
- 17:08Speaker 5: of like post-pandemic, you don't have to follow people and
- 17:10Speaker 5: you'll still see their content. But for me, I've been
- 17:13Speaker 5: doing YouTube videos consistently since 2012. A video a day
- 17:17Speaker 5: since 2012. I made at least one YouTube video every
- 17:20Speaker 5: single day since 2012. All right, let's just get.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Let's talk money. Okay. Okay, because....
- 17:28Speaker 4: Me and him are just probably learning about YouTube, people
- 17:30Speaker 4: making money within the last four or five.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Years, correct?
- 17:33Speaker 4: We watch YouTube for, for me, golf, MMA, fights, highlights, athletic.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Stuff, you know what I mean? Funny stuff. Just to
- 17:42Speaker 1: go get information. I did not know when you guys
- 17:44Speaker 1: were on there making these videos, you guys were getting
- 17:46Speaker 1: a check.
- 17:47Speaker 2: For sure.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Give me an example.
- 17:50Speaker 5: So the fun fact is I never made a lot
- 17:52Speaker 5: of money on YouTube, me personally. I've never made millions
- 17:57Speaker 5: of views or long videos. But when I was working
- 17:59Speaker 5: at All Def, man, and I was head of content
- 18:02Speaker 5: and talent relations at All Def for four years, and.
- 18:06Speaker 2: I didn't manage the talent.
- 18:07Speaker 1: That's All Def Digital.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Oh, All Def Digital, Russell Simmons' old company. I didn't
- 18:11Speaker 5: manage these talent, but I managed their relationship with All Def.
- 18:14Speaker 5: But there was people making 40, 50 grand a month
- 18:17Speaker 5: from YouTube every month.
- 18:20Speaker 2: And those are black creators. White creators.
- 18:23Speaker 5: $ 150, 000 a month.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Mr.
- 18:26Speaker 5: Beast and Mr. Beast is clearing millions, millions a month,
- 18:30Speaker 5: probably on YouTube. And that's just checks from YouTube. You
- 18:34Speaker 5: talk about brand deals. I remember at all. If I
- 18:36Speaker 5: made 75 grand a year and that was like, oh,
- 18:39Speaker 5: my God, this is great bread. I'm taking care of
- 18:41Speaker 5: my family. I remember there was brand deals. We would
- 18:43Speaker 5: give people 75 grand for a vine to promote a movie.
- 18:48Speaker 5: And they would make that six second Vine in our office.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Like the Batches of the World.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Batches, Brittany Furlan.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Melvin Gregg.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Melvin Gregg. People of that stature. Damn.
- 18:57Speaker 5: They would make my salary and then make that video
- 19:00Speaker 5: in my office. Like I remember one of these Viners
- 19:02Speaker 5: was like promoting whatever movie it was.
- 19:03Speaker 2: I remember the movie.
- 19:04Speaker 5: She was like, yo, I'm. X, Y, Z, man, go
- 19:06Speaker 5: check out this movie. It comes out in theaters on
- 19:08Speaker 5: August 13th.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Six seconds video. And behind you, they were on like,
- 19:12Speaker 3: was it on Twitter?
- 19:13Speaker 2: It was its own platform.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Own platform, but people were six seconds.
- 19:16Speaker 2: But people didn't put it on Twitter. Right, right.
- 19:18Speaker 1: It was only for six seconds. I know, I know.
- 19:20Speaker 5: She got like 70 grand for that video and then
- 19:23Speaker 5: submitted the invoice right then.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Like, didn't even leave. Signed the thing, made the video
- 19:27Speaker 2: in the office, submitted the invoice. It was like, cool,
- 19:29Speaker 2: I'll see you in that check.
- 19:29Speaker 1: And where is she now? I don't know. Her name
- 19:32Speaker 1: is Regina Hall.
- 19:34Speaker 2: She's a big news star.
- 19:36Speaker 5: But yeah, it's very lucrative now. Now kids dream of
- 19:41Speaker 5: doing this for a living, and it's a viable it's
- 19:44Speaker 5: a viable job opportunity for them do you think I.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Mean besides you but this question seems to be asked
- 19:53Speaker 4: Hollywood finally now respects you guys correct for sure yeah
- 19:56Speaker 4: there was a time it was like absolutely a little
- 19:59Speaker 4: little digital stuff over there.
- 20:02Speaker 1: If you want like a mainstream.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Yeah, there was a time you were not going to.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Cross over.
- 20:07Speaker 3: No.
- 20:07Speaker 5: They might throw in an influencer for a little pop,
- 20:09Speaker 5: but like a real, real show, never, never happening.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Ever.
- 20:14Speaker 3: So did you have to really like put a real
- 20:18Speaker 3: lot of thought into like your content creating, especially like
- 20:21Speaker 3: I was just saying, like if you weren't like a
- 20:23Speaker 3: top comedian, like what went into your thought process as
- 20:26Speaker 3: far as like your content creating?
- 20:27Speaker 1: Like, okay, well. Let me just come up with something
- 20:30Speaker 1: that's going to go viral.
- 20:31Speaker 5: For me, it was actually like, I'll use the baseball analogy.
- 20:35Speaker 5: It was like, I'm going to be like Ichiro Suzuki. Like,
- 20:38Speaker 5: I'm not going to be home runs, but it's just
- 20:40Speaker 5: like getting on base, on base, singles, singles, singles.
- 20:43Speaker 1: You weren't looking for the home runs.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I'm not looking for the home runs.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Were you not looking for the home runs or you
- 20:48Speaker 1: just weren't getting home runs?
- 20:49Speaker 5: I wasn't getting home runs, so I maybe switched my
- 20:51Speaker 5: strategy to like, let me just get on base.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Because at that time, when I first started, you needed money.
- 20:56Speaker 2: You needed cameras. You needed stuff. And I didn't have
- 21:00Speaker 2: any of that. So I was like, well, I can't
- 21:01Speaker 2: do that. So what can I do?
- 21:03Speaker 5: I can make a short video about whatever's trending, you know,
- 21:06Speaker 5: and just kind of just keep making it. So I've,
- 21:08Speaker 5: Still to this day, even though I have all these
- 21:10Speaker 5: other things going on now, to me that day-to-day connection
- 21:13Speaker 5: point with the audience is still why I knew I
- 21:16Speaker 5: was going to do this. We'd be here for an hour,
- 21:17Speaker 5: hour and a half or so. So I was like,
- 21:18Speaker 5: let me get two or three videos up before we
- 21:21Speaker 5: get in here.
- 21:22Speaker 1: In one day?
- 21:23Speaker 2: In one day. I have three videos posted already today.
- 21:25Speaker 2: It's 10 o'clock.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Where are they?
- 21:28Speaker 2: On Instagram, TikTok, Threads, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube Shorts. Every day?
- 21:35Speaker 1: Every day.
- 21:36Speaker 2: And that's just my short form.
- 21:37Speaker 5: I also have podcasts long form on another YouTube page.
- 21:40Speaker 5: I have a Patreon that I manage that has content
- 21:43Speaker 5: that doesn't ever see the public a lot of day.
- 21:45Speaker 2: And that's not to mention, like, this is great.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Is that when you cuss?
- 21:48Speaker 2: No, I'm not. That is where I cuss now. I'm
- 21:51Speaker 2: doing a little bit more every day. A little bit
- 21:53Speaker 2: more every day.
- 21:54Speaker 4: I saw your post where somebody said.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Wow, you know, he's on reels acting like he's a
- 22:00Speaker 1: regular person.
- 22:01Speaker 2: And then you wrote.
- 22:04Speaker 2: I don't remember this.
- 22:05Speaker 1: You said I'm just an ordinary nigga.
- 22:07Speaker 2: I was like, Kev on stage. I really am though.
- 22:14Speaker 1: But people put you on this pedestal.
- 22:16Speaker 2: And they shouldn't.
- 22:17Speaker 5: I'm just a nigga with the same internet you have.
- 22:21Speaker 2: I'm looking at the same.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Stories you see. Same platform, same options, opportunities.
- 22:26Speaker 5: Literally, I'm just, I really, the only difference between me
- 22:29Speaker 5: and most people is they comment, I create.
- 22:34Speaker 2: That's it.
- 22:35Speaker 5: Like, you might respond to a thread. I'm like, oh,
- 22:37Speaker 5: I'm making a video of that. I make my response
- 22:40Speaker 5: in video form, right? I don't just quote tweet you.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Sometimes I do. For the most time, most part, I'm
- 22:46Speaker 2: just doing the same thing you're doing.
- 22:47Speaker 5: I'm just turning that into content instead of just replying
- 22:50Speaker 5: to something like that.
- 22:50Speaker 1: How should me and T.O. below this?
- 22:52Speaker 4: I mean, we already number two or three. But how
- 22:56Speaker 4: do we get to number one? What would you do?
- 22:57Speaker 2: Man, you know what? It's like, Club Shay Shay is
- 23:03Speaker 2: airing today. Me and Tony did Club Shay Shay.
- 23:05Speaker 5: What Shannon has done, it's great interviews, and it's just
- 23:09Speaker 5: so many clips.
- 23:12Speaker 2: They will put out, man, Shannon will put out 30,
- 23:13Speaker 2: 40 clips.
- 23:14Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying.
- 23:15Speaker 5: It's like there's a stat that says somebody won't even
- 23:18Speaker 5: think about following you until they've seen 16 of your posts.
- 23:22Speaker 2: That they like. Brianna! Brianna! Taryn, listen.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Anthony.
- 23:27Speaker 5: So it's like you have to put out so much content.
- 23:30Speaker 5: So when they asked me to do this, I'm like, oh, great.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Whenever this comes out, it'll probably get two or three,
- 23:35Speaker 5: four clips out of this, hopefully. That's three or four
- 23:37Speaker 5: videos I don't have to make that day because as
- 23:39Speaker 5: I'm getting busier, it's harder and harder for me to
- 23:41Speaker 5: scour the internet making videos. So now I'm just repurposing
- 23:44Speaker 5: stuff that I've done. and making that a video so
- 23:47Speaker 5: I can hit my quota without having to create it
- 23:49Speaker 5: all myself.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Man, I'm listening to everything you're doing. I'm like, how
- 23:53Speaker 3: do you even have time to do anything?
- 23:55Speaker 1: How do you sleep?
- 23:58Speaker 2: The funny thing is, I get that question a lot.
- 24:00Speaker 2: I sleep a lot. Really?
- 24:02Speaker 5: I just am really efficient from when I wake up.
- 24:05Speaker 5: I usually am in the bed asleep by 10 p.m.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Almost every night.
- 24:08Speaker 5: If I'm not coming from a show or something like that,
- 24:10Speaker 5: I'm up at 5, go to the gym, But I
- 24:12Speaker 5: just like, when I take my five, six mile walk,
- 24:15Speaker 5: I'm scrolling TikTok threads. I'll make a video while I'm walking,
- 24:18Speaker 5: sometimes two. So by the time I get home and
- 24:19Speaker 5: take a shower, I'm like, okay, that's two videos down.
- 24:21Speaker 5: Then I get out of the shower, eating breakfast, I'll
- 24:23Speaker 5: scour the internet. You know, I often get three up
- 24:25Speaker 5: before 10 a.m. So then I can focus on whatever else.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Wifey and kids, they be like, dad, where does their time,
- 24:32Speaker 1: when do they have their time?
- 24:34Speaker 2: And that's one of the reasons. The other thing is,
- 24:35Speaker 2: that's a great question. This don't take long. Like, I'll do.
- 24:41Speaker 5: Something like this, right? I'll take less than three minutes
- 24:44Speaker 5: to make some. I'd be like, yo, I'm out here
- 24:46Speaker 5: with T.O. and Chris Spencer doing their brand new podcast. Man,
- 24:49Speaker 5: you know T.O. one of my favorite receivers. I didn't
- 24:51Speaker 5: tell you yet, but it's true.
- 24:52Speaker 2: T.O. out here, Chris Spencer, one of my favorite comedians.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Chris Spencer had.
- 24:56Speaker 2: My favorite joke. You'll check this podcast out soon, right?
- 25:00Speaker 2: So I'll post that.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:03Speaker 5: I've actually dumbed it down because the algorithm doesn't care
- 25:07Speaker 5: if the quality's high. It doesn't care. Like, it's actually
- 25:11Speaker 5: more successful stripped down now. Like, grainy videos work.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Raw, just raw, yeah.
- 25:16Speaker 2: People are craving authenticity more than anything.
- 25:19Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 25:19Speaker 5: Authenticity is working more than anything else people are saying
- 25:24Speaker 5: man you know what i like chris i like t.o
- 25:27Speaker 5: nobody back in the day in hollywood and you have
- 25:29Speaker 5: a long hollywood career the network had to tell you
- 25:32Speaker 5: in the marketing matter how to back you up that
- 25:34Speaker 5: was the only way so it was like force fed
- 25:36Speaker 5: force fed force fed now people are like i don't
- 25:38Speaker 5: care how many people won't even care how many views
- 25:40Speaker 5: it gets that's my show if this is their podcast
- 25:44Speaker 5: get to the point is their podcast they don't care
- 25:46Speaker 5: if it gets a million views or a hundred thousand
- 25:47Speaker 5: or five thousand That's my show. So you don't even
- 25:50Speaker 5: have to be having a lot of views to be successful.
- 25:54Speaker 5: You just have to have people who really, really rock
- 25:56Speaker 5: with you, who watch your stuff all the way to
- 25:58Speaker 5: the end, who buy your merch, who will come if
- 26:00Speaker 5: you do a live show. And virality is not an
- 26:02Speaker 5: important part of your business model. Consistency, equality, and authenticity
- 26:08Speaker 5: are much more important parts. I haven't really gone truly
- 26:11Speaker 5: viral that much in my career, if at all.
- 26:13Speaker 4: What's the definition of viral? Because people use that word
- 26:16Speaker 4: so loosely.
- 26:16Speaker 2: I don't even know how many views viral is now.
- 26:19Speaker 5: Because a average person, anybody can go viral, 30, 40
- 26:23Speaker 5: million views. But think about how many videos you watch
- 26:26Speaker 5: a day now.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Like, they don't hit.
- 26:28Speaker 5: A viral video like, say, Gungam Style 13 years ago,
- 26:32Speaker 5: everybody on earth knew what you're talking about. You could
- 26:34Speaker 5: be getting dragged on TikTok and the majority of the
- 26:37Speaker 5: world has no idea who you even are or ever
- 26:39Speaker 5: use TikTok.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I've been dragged on threads. The majority of Americans don't
- 26:42Speaker 2: even use threads. You know what I mean? So viral
- 26:45Speaker 2: is relative.
- 26:46Speaker 5: I say you have to be like 20, 30 million
- 26:47Speaker 5: views to be really viral. But even in that, if
- 26:50Speaker 5: that went viral, you can have a 20 million view.
- 26:52Speaker 5: video on TikTok and nobody even knows what you're talking about.
- 26:55Speaker 1: But then you got to ride that wave though.
- 26:57Speaker 2: And that's the hard part.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Right. You got to come back with something.
- 27:00Speaker 5: And that's why I go the Ichiro Suzuki model, just single, single.
- 27:04Speaker 5: That's why that three videos a day really helps me
- 27:05Speaker 5: because some days three videos would be 1.5 million, 1.7 billion,
- 27:09Speaker 5: 2 million on Instagram. The next day it'd be 5,000.
- 27:14Speaker 1: 50,000, 100,000. Like you said, consistency.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Either way, I got to put two or three videos
- 27:17Speaker 2: up a day.
- 27:18Speaker 1: When did you know you were funding?
- 27:20Speaker 5: I knew I was funny as a kid when I
- 27:21Speaker 5: realized my grandma was letting me get away with stuff
- 27:24Speaker 5: because I made her laugh. It was as simple as
- 27:26Speaker 5: I should be in bed by 8 o'clock, but she's like,
- 27:29Speaker 5: come here and do that.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Do this. Shout.
- 27:30Speaker 5: Sister Daniels did. And it'd be like 8.05. As long
- 27:33Speaker 5: as I was making her laugh, she's not like, go
- 27:35Speaker 5: to bed, go to bed, go to bed. So that's
- 27:37Speaker 5: the first time I realized, oh, there's some currency in this.
- 27:39Speaker 5: It's not money yet. And I didn't even care about money.
- 27:42Speaker 5: The most important thing in my life at that time
- 27:43Speaker 5: was not having to go to bed. So I realized,
- 27:46Speaker 5: and attention, right? Like my grandma and my aunts and
- 27:49Speaker 5: uncles motioning me over and be like, do that thing
- 27:51Speaker 5: that happened in church. Um, that's when I realized I
- 27:53Speaker 5: was funny. That's also when I realized people will not
- 27:55Speaker 5: laugh at something when they, when it happens, but still
- 27:57Speaker 5: think it's funny. And people be like, Oh, that we
- 28:00Speaker 5: have like a little bit of not, not hypocrisy, but like, sure.
- 28:04Speaker 5: I realized people think things are funny and they won't
- 28:06Speaker 5: publicly do it. And still to this day, I have
- 28:08Speaker 5: pastors who watch roast me and DM me like, Oh,
- 28:11Speaker 5: I love roasting, but I can never comment on it publicly.
- 28:14Speaker 2: You know? So that's what I realized.
- 28:15Speaker 5: Not only funny, get you stuff, but also, What's funny, publicly,
- 28:18Speaker 5: people won't always agree to that because how they might
- 28:21Speaker 5: be perceived. But yeah, I must have been like four
- 28:23Speaker 5: or five years old, maybe six or seven.
- 28:25Speaker 1: The wait is over.

- 29:35Speaker 6: When you said your grandma.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Said, dude, do such and such, that sister did a
- 29:38Speaker 1: shout in church. Yeah. White people probably don't know what
- 29:40Speaker 1: that means. No. Shouting in church? They have no idea.
- 29:53Speaker 5: One time I had a show in Yakima, Washington, and
- 29:56Speaker 5: we told this white dude to come up and shout.
- 29:59Speaker 5: It was a white church invite us. When that dude
- 30:02Speaker 5: got to it, we said, on the count of three,
- 30:04Speaker 5: we're going to play some music. You're going to shout
- 30:06Speaker 5: on the count of three.
- 30:07Speaker 2: One, two, three. You know what he did? Ah!
- 30:10Speaker 1: Bro.
- 30:11Speaker 5: When I tell you, we died laughing. He was like,
- 30:15Speaker 5: what are you doing? He was like, y'all told me
- 30:17Speaker 5: to shout. We were like, oh, we're living in two
- 30:20Speaker 5: different worlds.
- 30:21Speaker 1: And being that, like I said, you have a church background.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:25Speaker 3: I'm the same way. My grandmama, you know, raised us
- 30:28Speaker 3: in the church. We went to church pretty much every day.
- 30:30Speaker 1: That was Deacon. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Every day. Every day.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Monday day was Bible study. Tuesday was Deacon's meeting. Wednesday,
- 30:41Speaker 3: it might have been.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 30:43Speaker 3: Uh, sisters, uh, appreciation meeting, um, Thursday that, I mean,
- 30:49Speaker 3: it was, it was something, bro. It was always something every,
- 30:53Speaker 3: every day we went to church damn near, but to,
- 30:57Speaker 3: to hear you say shout.
- 30:58Speaker 1: That just, it just took me back with the tambourines,
- 31:00Speaker 1: the drums.
- 31:02Speaker 3: I mean, I mean, it get the Holy Ghost, the
- 31:05Speaker 3: Spirit coming into the.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Church to where it's like. That used to scare me. Really? Yeah.
- 31:10Speaker 3: I mean, to the point to where, like, the drummers
- 31:13Speaker 3: are getting so into it, bro.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Like, their sticks are breaking.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Like, stuff just everywhere. And then you're talking about people shouting.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Like, I'm used to, like, back in the day, like,
- 31:23Speaker 1: women didn't wear pants. Not the church anyway.
- 31:25Speaker 2: That's how I grew up, too.
- 31:26Speaker 1: But now, like you say, in the Bible, it says,
- 31:27Speaker 1: come as you are. So it's more accepting. Very casual, yeah. Yeah,
- 31:31Speaker 1: very casual. Very casual.
- 31:32Speaker 3: But one of the things that I remember about shouting, like, yeah,
- 31:35Speaker 3: you hear the shouting, they're feeling it, the Holy Ghost,
- 31:38Speaker 3: the Spirit is getting to them. But really one of
- 31:40Speaker 3: the things that really just kind of like was unexpected
- 31:43Speaker 3: to me when they were shouting so much and you
- 31:45Speaker 3: It's not demonic, but to the point to where they're
- 31:48Speaker 3: foaming at the.
- 31:49Speaker 5: Mouth, bro.
- 31:49Speaker 1: That's why it was scaring me.
- 31:50Speaker 2: It's terrifying.
- 31:51Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying.
- 31:51Speaker 2: As a kid, it's like, this is insane, man.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Yeah, man, and it's like an out-of-body experience. What were
- 31:56Speaker 1: you going to say about the dress? Did the dress
- 31:57Speaker 1: come up or something?
- 31:58Speaker 4: No, no.
- 31:58Speaker 3: How are you going to tease us with the dress
- 32:00Speaker 3: and not finish it? See how the devil, the devil
- 32:02Speaker 3: is really busy. Even in this show, the devil is busy.
- 32:05Speaker 3: I'm trying to educate these people.
- 32:07Speaker 4: You started off by saying they'd have on these dresses,
- 32:10Speaker 4: and now, shucks, they wear pants, see?
- 32:13Speaker 1: See what I'm talking about? Oh, they come as they are.
- 32:16Speaker 1: But when they used to wear them dresses, I was
- 32:18Speaker 1: in the back pew. I rebuke you in the name
- 32:20Speaker 1: of Jesus. The devil is alive. He is alive today.
- 32:24Speaker 1: It's not happening.
- 32:25Speaker 2: I thought it was.
- 32:26Speaker 1: We all thought it was. No, but as a little kid,
- 32:28Speaker 1: you know, they be shouting. You'll see some. They had slips.
- 32:34Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Slips. Slips and stockings.
- 32:37Speaker 2: I'm telling you now.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Slips and stockings. So you weren't really finna see no action. No, sir.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Not in church. Not at AOH. No, man.
- 32:47Speaker 1: No, sir.
- 32:48Speaker 2: No, man.
- 32:48Speaker 1: It wasn't none of that. No, sir. You weren't about to.
- 32:51Speaker 1: I ain't heard the word slip in 20 years. Right, exactly.
- 32:54Speaker 1: See that? That was like, ooh, you know what I mean?
- 32:56Speaker 2: That was too much.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Slip's too much.
- 32:58Speaker 2: That was too much. Slip, girdles, stockings. Right. Man, under armor.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Man, what? Man, it was almost spankish thing back then. Spank,
- 33:07Speaker 1: all of that. Man, I'm trying to tell you. I'm
- 33:10Speaker 1: trying to tell you, Chris. I'm trying to tell you now.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I knew there was a story. I knew there was
- 33:15Speaker 1: a story.
- 33:16Speaker 3: But just talking about being in church, like, I know
- 33:20Speaker 3: you don't want to go too deep into it, but
- 33:22Speaker 3: did that discourage you from doing certain type of content?
- 33:25Speaker 3: Because like I said, I know growing up in a
- 33:27Speaker 3: strict household, for me, getting my ear pierced, my grandmama
- 33:32Speaker 3: was like, Put me at the house.
- 33:36Speaker 2: For sure.
- 33:37Speaker 1: I didn't get an earring until I was in college.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Yes.
- 33:41Speaker 3: And when I knew I was grown enough to do it,
- 33:43Speaker 3: and I was scared to go home then.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Did you come home with it in your ear? Yeah, bro.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Did you have it in your ear when you came home? Yeah,
- 33:48Speaker 1: my grandma.
- 33:49Speaker 3: And I tried to hide it. You know, I tried
- 33:51Speaker 3: to hide it. You know, you try to do something
- 33:52Speaker 3: like this. You know what I mean?
- 33:55Speaker 2: Hey, grandma.
- 33:55Speaker 1: There's no way you can hide it. Right. And she
- 33:57Speaker 1: looked at me, and I felt fear, bro.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:01Speaker 1: What you doing with that earring in your ear? And
- 34:03Speaker 1: I mean... I'm like, I'm in college now. I don't
- 34:07Speaker 1: care about that. But I was still living with my
- 34:09Speaker 1: grandmama at the time.
- 34:10Speaker 5: Yeah, but it was a huge deal in the church.
- 34:14Speaker 5: Fred Hammond got an earring. My church was like, gospel
- 34:18Speaker 5: is dead. God is coming back.
- 34:20Speaker 2: There is no love for the like. It was huge. So, yeah,
- 34:24Speaker 2: coming from that, it's like. It's like Bobby Boucher and
- 34:28Speaker 2: the Waterboy. Once you say everything's the devil, it's just like,
- 34:30Speaker 2: all right, man.
- 34:31Speaker 5: We can't do nothing. We're having sex anyway. So yeah,
- 34:36Speaker 5: to answer your question, for a long time, I don't
- 34:39Speaker 5: think the church, it was the church thing. It was
- 34:41Speaker 5: like YouTube was very restrictive about anything outside the lines
- 34:44Speaker 5: would get your channel demonetized you wouldn't get you know
- 34:48Speaker 5: money so I wouldn't I didn't really cuss at that
- 34:50Speaker 5: time but I wouldn't say nigga or anything like that
- 34:52Speaker 5: because I didn't want I needed all that money even
- 34:54Speaker 5: if it was 180 bucks at that time so.
- 34:55Speaker 3: You had to censor your content yes tailored on what
- 34:59Speaker 3: they're absolutely but I think I was always kind of
- 35:01Speaker 3: bucking against the system of the church I never wanted
- 35:03Speaker 3: to be considered only a church comedian because that was
- 35:06Speaker 3: too limiting to me.
- 35:07Speaker 5: So when I was doing Nate's it was funny because
- 35:10Speaker 5: I would do churches and I would do my church jokes,
- 35:12Speaker 5: but at Nate's I would talk about anything that I
- 35:15Speaker 5: wanted to.
- 35:15Speaker 2: And people from church would come in there and they'd
- 35:17Speaker 2: be guilty.
- 35:18Speaker 5: They'd be like, well, this is a comedy club, Kev,
- 35:19Speaker 5: don't tell my pastor I'm here. I'm like, I'm about
- 35:21Speaker 5: to go on stage. If I tell him, I'm telling
- 35:24Speaker 5: on myself.
- 35:25Speaker 1: You still were relatively pretty clean.
- 35:27Speaker 5: Relatively clean at that time, but I wasn't only talking
- 35:29Speaker 5: about church stuff. To me, the world was just bigger
- 35:32Speaker 5: than that. I think when we first started going viral,
- 35:34Speaker 5: it was for the Playmakers YouTube channel, How to Shout
- 35:36Speaker 5: in a Black Church, Black church says, black parents say,
- 35:40Speaker 5: all that type of stuff. And then after like maybe seven,
- 35:42Speaker 5: eight videos, I immediately was like, I got to make
- 35:43Speaker 5: my own page because I don't want to only be
- 35:46Speaker 5: church boy, church, church, church, church. So I made KevOnStage
- 35:49Speaker 5: page just so I could.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Express all of this stuff. Before you even go any further,
- 35:52Speaker 1: where did the name KevOnStage come from?
- 35:54Speaker 2: So at this time I was on Twitter and people
- 35:57Speaker 2: were getting fired.
- 35:57Speaker 1: What year are we talking?
- 35:58Speaker 2: This is like 2008. Nine, nine, nine.
- 36:03Speaker 1: So you're in LA.
- 36:04Speaker 2: No, no, no. I moved to LA to 2013. Yeah. So...
- 36:08Speaker 2: There was people who were getting fired. So at that time, Facebook,
- 36:11Speaker 2: you could only use your real name.
- 36:12Speaker 5: You had to use your birth name or Facebook wouldn't
- 36:14Speaker 5: approve you. And on Twitter, people started using their real
- 36:17Speaker 5: name just from Facebook. But there were some instances where
- 36:19Speaker 5: people were like making jokes and people would find out
- 36:21Speaker 5: where you worked and they were getting fired. So I
- 36:23Speaker 5: was like, well, dang, I don't want that to happen.
- 36:25Speaker 5: So let me like at least change my name. So
- 36:26Speaker 5: I literally was like, my name is Kevin and I'll
- 36:29Speaker 5: be doing stand-up. So I'll be on stage. So I'm
- 36:31Speaker 5: just going to go by Kev on stage. It was
- 36:34Speaker 5: as simple as that. I wish I'd never done it.
- 36:37Speaker 5: I did not think I would be known as KevOnStage
- 36:41Speaker 5: for the rest of my life. People know me as
- 36:44Speaker 5: KevOnStage so much, some people have thought my last name
- 36:46Speaker 5: is Stage. And I'm like, you ain't never met nobody
- 36:48Speaker 5: with the last name Stage. I would much rather be
- 36:51Speaker 5: known by Kevin Fredericks, my actual given name. But at
- 36:54Speaker 5: the same time, If people know you, I'm not going
- 36:57Speaker 5: to complain.
- 36:57Speaker 1: I'm sure Cedric the Entertainer is doing just fine.
- 37:00Speaker 5: Literally don't need to know what Cedric the Entertainer's last
- 37:02Speaker 5: name is.
- 37:03Speaker 2: I know.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Dog is doing great.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Ice Cube is doing great.
- 37:07Speaker 3: I was one of those people. I thought your last
- 37:09Speaker 3: name was Stage. I thought it was. Right.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Yo, you ain't.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Never known nobody last named.
- 37:14Speaker 1: To be Stage ever. It's the first time for everything, bro. Hey,
- 37:18Speaker 1: I literally.
- 37:19Speaker 3: Hey, you're a different cat, bro. I was like, hey,
- 37:22Speaker 3: I know. Yeah, it's a black guy named Stage.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Because Babyface got a brother named Kevon.
- 37:28Speaker 2: He does.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Kevon Edmonds. I just thought it was just... It was
- 37:31Speaker 1: your first name, you just kind of tweaked it, and
- 37:33Speaker 1: then your last name was stage.
- 37:35Speaker 2: So I was like, all right.
- 37:36Speaker 1: But he's not the only one that thought that, right?
- 37:37Speaker 5: No, that's what I'm saying. A lot of people thought that.
- 37:41Speaker 5: But at the same time, it's like the dude who
- 37:42Speaker 5: played M'Baku in Black Panther. He does other movies. His
- 37:46Speaker 5: name is Winston Duke. We're like, man, we see M'Baku. Man,
- 37:49Speaker 5: look at him in this scary movie. M'Baku killing it.
- 37:52Speaker 5: So we just, that's how we are as black people.
- 37:54Speaker 5: I'm just glad people remember me at all.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 37:57Speaker 2: If you recognize my name, it's fine. There's worse problems
- 38:01Speaker 2: to have.
- 38:02Speaker 1: You mentioned the roast show. Yeah. And that's one of
- 38:05Speaker 1: my favorite things in the world. But I'm going to
- 38:08Speaker 1: tell you.
- 38:08Speaker 4: You always bring this up, Chris. Dude, this is the
- 38:12Speaker 4: most brilliant joke and painful joke in the world.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Brilliant and painful at the same time. We had a
- 38:18Speaker 1: roast for one of his dear friends, Tahir Moore, who's
- 38:20Speaker 1: in his little troop. Tahir Moore.
- 38:24Speaker 4: And he says to me, Chris Spencer is one of
- 38:28Speaker 4: the most wanted people in Hollywood.
- 38:31Speaker 1: But they want him behind the camera and not in
- 38:34Speaker 1: front anymore. Yo!
- 38:37Speaker 4: Tears rolled down my face from laughter and pain.
- 38:42Speaker 1: I was like, is this nigga right? Am I not
- 38:45Speaker 1: in front? Yeah, I did that, but that's because... Jamie
- 38:49Speaker 1: put me on, but it was so brilliant.
- 38:51Speaker 2: And that's when I was like, but you got go
- 38:53Speaker 2: on Hulu now though.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:56Speaker 1: Thank you very much. Go to Jason on Hulu.
- 38:58Speaker 5: But see, you're another example. Like you have my, my
- 39:01Speaker 5: milk of magnesia, right? Black people, you only got to
- 39:04Speaker 5: do one thing.
- 39:05Speaker 1: I know.
- 39:05Speaker 2: And we will love you. You mentioned real husband.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Real husband. You created, you're probably on your way to talk.
- 39:10Speaker 1: I'm going, Get there, Chris. I'm sorry. Forgive me.
- 39:12Speaker 2: But that was front page. Milk of magnesia. Can you
- 39:15Speaker 2: tap that white girl?
- 39:15Speaker 4: To this day, when I see people, especially athletes in
- 39:19Speaker 4: the airport, they'd be like, yo, I tried to name
- 39:22Speaker 4: some other credits.
- 39:23Speaker 1: I ain't never seen none of that shit. It's one.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Don't be a minister.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Excuse me, Sister Keith. tap that white dude? And they
- 39:31Speaker 1: make me do it in front of their family. Oh, God.
- 39:34Speaker 1: I don't want to do it.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Stop making you do it.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Do the shit. Excuse me, sister, can you tap that
- 39:38Speaker 1: white dude like you did it on the set?
- 39:43Speaker 2: That's what I love about being black, man. Yes.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Like you just said, they call you by the name
- 39:47Speaker 1: they know you from on TV. Listen.
- 39:49Speaker 2: And that's okay with me.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:52Speaker 2: I'm fine with that.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 39:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:54Speaker 1: So what did the church give you?
- 39:56Speaker 2: Man, you know what?
- 39:58Speaker 5: One of my friends said this, and I think it's
- 40:00Speaker 5: so true. The black church was like a conservatory. Like,
- 40:04Speaker 5: it gave you an opportunity to perform, develop your talents,
- 40:07Speaker 5: a stage, consistency, like, creative musicians. That's why we talk
- 40:11Speaker 5: about R & B in its heyday. And even prior to, like,
- 40:15Speaker 5: 90s R & B, from Ray Charles, like, Learning to
- 40:17Speaker 5: play and being in a black church and.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Having, like, you really be bombing.
- 40:21Speaker 5: They won't boo you, but you know when you're not
- 40:23Speaker 5: doing well at whatever you're supposed to be doing. So
- 40:26Speaker 5: the black church, like, I would not be who I am. First,
- 40:29Speaker 5: it gave me the material to make fun of.
- 40:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 40:32Speaker 5: But then it also let me be on stage. It's
- 40:34Speaker 5: the first place I did stand up. I used to
- 40:36Speaker 5: play the drums in church. I used to play the
- 40:37Speaker 5: bass in church. played the keys in church. I was
- 40:40Speaker 5: a youth pastor for many years. I was actually a
- 40:42Speaker 5: youth pastor doing stand-up and comedy at the same time.
- 40:45Speaker 5: I would invite people from the comedy club to church,
- 40:48Speaker 5: and people from church would come see me at the
- 40:50Speaker 5: comedy club. So it was like, it was my stage.
- 40:53Speaker 5: And still a big part of who I am and
- 40:56Speaker 5: why I am and where I'm from.
- 40:58Speaker 2: Me and T.O.
- 40:58Speaker 5: Never met each other, but had the exact same experience
- 41:01Speaker 5: in two different parts of America. I was in El Paso,
- 41:03Speaker 5: he was in Alabama. We were having the same experience,
- 41:05Speaker 5: so that connective tissue connection is it makes me be
- 41:08Speaker 5: able to speak your language. It gave me my first show,
- 41:11Speaker 5: Churchy on BET. I was pitching all kinds of shows,
- 41:14Speaker 5: and I remember Sheila Duckworth, I pitched her.
- 41:16Speaker 1: What up, Sheila?
- 41:17Speaker 2: Yeah, she gave me the best advice.
- 41:18Speaker 5: I was pitching some funeral show, and she was like,
- 41:21Speaker 5: did you grow up working in a funeral home?
- 41:23Speaker 2: And I was like, nah. She's like, does your family
- 41:25Speaker 2: own one? I was like, nah. She's like, why are
- 41:26Speaker 2: you pitching this? I was like, I just thought it'd
- 41:28Speaker 2: be funny.
- 41:28Speaker 5: She was like, you should pitch something that you know
- 41:31Speaker 5: inside and out that nobody else knows as well as
- 41:34Speaker 5: you do.
- 41:34Speaker 2: And you said Balenciaga. Yeah. And it was the church.
- 41:41Speaker 5: And even though I wasn't able to, like that show
- 41:43Speaker 5: never got bought, to answer one of your early questions, CO,
- 41:48Speaker 5: Hollywood is going to influencers because influencers don't need Hollywood.
- 41:54Speaker 5: And the best way to get Hollywood's attention is to
- 41:57Speaker 5: prove you don't need Hollywood at all.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Act like you don't.
- 41:59Speaker 2: Act like you don't exist.
- 42:02Speaker 1: A lot of y'all take pay cuts going to Hollywood.
- 42:05Speaker 2: You know what, Chris? I am not going to hold you.
- 42:08Speaker 2: I thought there was much more money in Hollywood than
- 42:11Speaker 2: there was.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Not the money y'all making.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Man, when I went, I booked a show at Disney.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Boy, they a penny pinch you, boy.
- 42:17Speaker 2: Man, when I got that check, I said, man, what?
- 42:21Speaker 1: Did you finally cuss? No. But I was.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Blowing my mind. So this is a big Disney show.
- 42:28Speaker 2: I got speaking role, like, clearly.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Right, yeah.
- 42:31Speaker 5: Man, when I tell you when that check hit my account,
- 42:33Speaker 5: it was like 800 bucks.
- 42:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 42:35Speaker 5: And I was like, that's why people think Oh, all
- 42:37Speaker 5: the things you do, what's the most lucrative? Stand-up comedy live.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Yes.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Hard tickets.
- 42:42Speaker 3: Yes.
- 42:43Speaker 2: Is where it's really at.
- 42:44Speaker 5: Now, when you get to the top of Hollywood, obviously,
- 42:47Speaker 5: it's lucrative. But for the majority of us, the majority
- 42:49Speaker 5: of people are not making that much money in Hollywood.
- 42:52Speaker 1: I love seeing you and Tony out there on stage.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. That's my dog.
- 42:56Speaker 1: Tell them about Tony Baker.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Tony Baker, one of my favorite comedians. He's on my
- 42:59Speaker 2: Mount Rushmore of comedians. So it's me, Tony. Well, don't
- 43:03Speaker 2: worry about it. You know, you are my favorite set mates. But, uh.
- 43:07Speaker 5: But no, Tony is just brilliant, and we just have
- 43:10Speaker 5: really good chemistry. Me and Tony have really good chemistry.
- 43:12Speaker 5: Me and Angel have really good chemistry. Bald Brothers, we
- 43:15Speaker 5: have a podcast. We have a live show. We have
- 43:17Speaker 5: a show on Tubi, which we went 16 dates.
- 43:20Speaker 2: I saw it.
- 43:21Speaker 5: Did fully improv stand-up. Brought people on stage. We were
- 43:25Speaker 5: trying to think of how we can make more material
- 43:28Speaker 5: for without burning our material. So we, like most comedians,
- 43:32Speaker 5: were like really precious about our material, because we don't
- 43:34Speaker 5: want you to hear our joke online and then you
- 43:36Speaker 5: come pay to see us and we're doing that same joke.
- 43:38Speaker 2: So I took a page out of 85 Styles' book.
- 43:40Speaker 5: I was like, can we create something that, I don't
- 43:43Speaker 5: care if I burn the whole hour, hour and a half,
- 43:45Speaker 5: and it was improv. So yeah, me, Rich Washington, who
- 43:49Speaker 5: runs TV and film for me, came up with this
- 43:51Speaker 5: idea to, you know, just freestyle whatever trending topic is
- 43:55Speaker 5: and then ask funny questions and interview people. And every
- 43:58Speaker 5: show is different. So we can put all the shows,
- 44:01Speaker 5: every clip out, and it doesn't change any of our material.
- 44:03Speaker 5: So it's been super fun, super helpful to us selling tickets.
- 44:05Speaker 5: How many seats, roughly?
- 44:06Speaker 4: Because some of the, you guys are- Long Brothers, man, we-
- 44:09Speaker 4: Y'all in theaters.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Over 1,000, yeah.
- 44:11Speaker 5: We could do, you know, we did 3,000 in D.C.,
- 44:14Speaker 5: 1,200 in New York. You know, we sold some tickets.
- 44:16Speaker 5: We did over 1,000 in London.
- 44:18Speaker 2: Like, we were selling. Not every city, but for the
- 44:21Speaker 2: most part, we was doing really well.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Were you blown away that your name was known overseas?
- 44:26Speaker 2: It blows my mind to this day.
- 44:28Speaker 5: That I can go to London and sell tickets, and
- 44:32Speaker 5: people not only come from London, people from Germany will
- 44:35Speaker 5: be like, okay, if London's as close as he's getting,
- 44:37Speaker 5: I'll go, I'll take a train from France, Belgium.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Mostly black people? All black people. A lot of people,
- 44:44Speaker 1: all black people.
- 44:44Speaker 4: And I want people to know, I want you to
- 44:46Speaker 4: say that again, because a lot of us think we
- 44:47Speaker 4: have to become mainstream, we have to.
- 44:52Speaker 4: Water down our material, make sure that that culture understands it, no.
- 44:58Speaker 4: You and Tyler Perry are living testimony to like, this
- 45:00Speaker 4: black audience will buy me Balenciaga. I'm going to do
- 45:05Speaker 4: it at least two more times today.
- 45:06Speaker 2: I should have worn my HBCU shirt. I was going
- 45:08Speaker 2: to wear the HBCU shirt.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Hey, man, look.
- 45:11Speaker 3: Hey, all I know is I only think I own
- 45:13Speaker 3: a Balenciaga shirt.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Come on, T.
- 45:16Speaker 3: I need to take your page out of your book, man.
- 45:18Speaker 3: I need you to start doing me some content. Creating content, producing, writing.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Listen, man.
- 45:24Speaker 1: You look good in that.
- 45:25Speaker 2: I work hard, man. I want to see it. I
- 45:27Speaker 2: want to do a thing or two.
- 45:28Speaker 4: It's thick.
- 45:29Speaker 2: That's heavy teeth.
- 45:29Speaker 1: That's quality, man. Say it like Tiffany.
- 45:32Speaker 3: What?
- 45:33Speaker 2: That's nice.
- 45:36Speaker 1: That's nice. Yeah, I like that.
- 45:39Speaker 5: But yeah, it's like, it's unbelievable that you, like you
- 45:45Speaker 5: see these videos, but you don't realize those videos get
- 45:47Speaker 5: millions of views.
- 45:48Speaker 2: Like that's actual people watching that. You know what I mean?
- 45:51Speaker 5: So selling out in London, the last time I was
- 45:54Speaker 5: in London at a church, I did like 3,000 Tickets
- 45:58Speaker 5: sold in London.
- 45:59Speaker 1: Incredible.
- 45:59Speaker 2: And it was like mind-blowing.
- 46:02Speaker 1: Kevon, sign this. Yeah. That's dope, dude.
- 46:06Speaker 4: And what's great about that is if you had a
- 46:08Speaker 4: show on NBC, CBS, it might not have.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Translated like that.
- 46:12Speaker 5: Chris, there's so many shows now. You can be the
- 46:16Speaker 5: number one show on a network, and people have never
- 46:19Speaker 5: even heard of that show. There's just so many shows,
- 46:23Speaker 5: so many networks. You could be like number one on Severance.
- 46:26Speaker 5: People are like, I ain't got Apple TV. Never heard
- 46:28Speaker 5: of that. Never heard of Ted Lasso. And these are
- 46:29Speaker 5: shows that get billions of views.
- 46:32Speaker 1: But you know what they do watch?
- 46:34Speaker 2: They watch Instagram.
- 46:36Speaker 1: Yeah, social media.
- 46:38Speaker 2: And that's what I told somebody.
- 46:39Speaker 5: It was like, if you're a Denzel fan, you love Denzel,
- 46:41Speaker 5: you watch everything he does in every interview about every movie,
- 46:43Speaker 5: you might have five to six hours of Denzel in
- 46:47Speaker 5: a given year. If you love Kev on stage, you
- 46:49Speaker 5: can watch me six, seven hours. And people often do
- 46:52Speaker 5: a week. Two podcasts, me and Angel do a podcast Tuesday,
- 46:56Speaker 5: or I'm sorry, Monday and Wednesday, hour and a half each.
- 47:00Speaker 5: People watch every episode. Me and Tony do the Ball
- 47:01Speaker 5: Brothers now twice a week. You might watch eight hours
- 47:04Speaker 5: of me just in podcast form. That's not talking about
- 47:07Speaker 5: videos on your phone. So the connection point feels much closer.
- 47:11Speaker 5: People know my son's in college. They know what school
- 47:12Speaker 5: he goes to. They know that he told me not
- 47:15Speaker 5: to come on campus and have lunch with him. I
- 47:16Speaker 5: was like, can I come have.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Lunch with him? Really? Absolutely.
- 47:18Speaker 1: How many kids? Two boys.
- 47:20Speaker 2: Two boys.
- 47:20Speaker 1: How old are they?
- 47:21Speaker 5: 20 and 17. The other one, my youngest one's turning
- 47:25Speaker 5: 18 in like three weeks.
- 47:26Speaker 3: So out of your kids and your family in general,
- 47:29Speaker 3: who's the most proud of you?
- 47:31Speaker 1: I know you have like, who's the most proud? That's
- 47:33Speaker 1: a great question.
- 47:34Speaker 2: That's a great question.
- 47:35Speaker 1: Now I got to think.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Probably my wife is probably the most proud of me.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Really?
- 47:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:40Speaker 5: She has seen and been instrumental in the growth. My
- 47:46Speaker 5: wife has seen so much stand-up. She tags my jokes everywhere.
- 47:49Speaker 5: She's told me why jokes that are working are not working.
- 47:52Speaker 5: This current hour that I'm working on, she is instrumental
- 47:57Speaker 5: in my success, and she's probably the most proud of me, easily.
- 48:00Speaker 5: My parents are probably second, and then her parents, and
- 48:04Speaker 5: then probably my kids. But my wife's number one. Yeah,
- 48:07Speaker 5: Melissa is number one, for sure.
- 48:08Speaker 3: Because even through my career, Chris' career, we're all going
- 48:13Speaker 3: to have those ebbs and flows, those ups and downs
- 48:17Speaker 3: throughout the course of our career.
- 48:18Speaker 1: I know reason you lost your brother. Tell us a
- 48:21Speaker 1: little bit about that.
- 48:22Speaker 3: And did that inspire you to like, you know, sometimes
- 48:25Speaker 3: we use grief to kind of like motivate us sometime
- 48:27Speaker 3: and we go through it and you like try to
- 48:29Speaker 3: find a purpose of why this and that happened.
- 48:31Speaker 1: Tell us a little bit about that, if you will.
- 48:33Speaker 5: So my brother was, like I said, he's the reason
- 48:36Speaker 5: I did stand up. He's the one that coached me
- 48:38Speaker 5: to go. And he was my manager. The reason I
- 48:43Speaker 5: got Spectrum commercials, he was instrumental in a lot of
- 48:46Speaker 5: those things. So we had dreams of like doing this
- 48:52Speaker 5: in Hollywood.
- 48:52Speaker 2: It's funny.
- 48:53Speaker 5: One of my favorite jokes from this grief tour, and
- 48:55Speaker 5: I've talked about it. He, he passed away, um, suddenly.
- 49:00Speaker 5: And my homeboy was my, my homeboys were, we were
- 49:03Speaker 5: in a group chat talking about Nia Long and Imei Wodoka,
- 49:06Speaker 5: that scandal.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 49:07Speaker 5: Um, he, he caught, got caught cheating on Nia Long, um,
- 49:11Speaker 5: that day. And one of the first jokes I wrote
- 49:13Speaker 5: about grief is my homeboy said, You know, we're.
- 49:18Speaker 2: Talking about Nia Long, like, man, she's so fine.
- 49:19Speaker 5: Like, if Imei cheated with Nia Long, like, who's the
- 49:22Speaker 5: other girl? And my homeboy was like, man, my girl
- 49:25Speaker 5: finer than Nia Long. And we were like, that's what
- 49:27Speaker 5: caused this heart attack. Oh, he saw that. He was like,
- 49:32Speaker 5: I'm gonna get up out of here, man. That's, that's
- 49:33Speaker 5: how egregious that statement was. And once I realized that
- 49:36Speaker 5: I could joke about that, I was like, I want
- 49:39Speaker 5: to honor him in comedy because that's the thing we
- 49:43Speaker 5: bonded over. It's the thing that we love is we
- 49:46Speaker 5: used to perform on stage together as the playmakers. Um,
- 49:49Speaker 5: and I think as a comedian, it's the thing I
- 49:52Speaker 5: do best is comedy. I always use the example. If
- 49:54Speaker 5: I was a, Painter, if my brother passed away, I
- 49:56Speaker 5: would have painted a portrait of him. If I was
- 49:58Speaker 5: a sculptor, I would have sculpted something. So because I'm
- 50:01Speaker 5: a comedian, I want to honor him with my gift,
- 50:04Speaker 5: with comedy. And at the same time, help myself grieve,
- 50:07Speaker 5: help other people grieve. So that's where this Grief Sucks
- 50:10Speaker 5: idea came from. That's what I'm touring right now. That'll
- 50:13Speaker 5: be on 2B in February, on his birthday. I'm going
- 50:15Speaker 5: to release a special on his birthday, February 2027. That's incredible.
- 50:18Speaker 1: So was it health related? Or was it just out
- 50:21Speaker 1: of the blue?
- 50:22Speaker 2: It was out of the blue. He had a heart attack.
- 50:23Speaker 2: And that's the crazy part is... You are just living
- 50:27Speaker 2: your life. You know, you're not expecting that.
- 50:31Speaker 1: How young was he?
- 50:32Speaker 2: He was 42. Wow. Same thing with David Arnold. Yeah,
- 50:35Speaker 2: David Arnold broke a lot of our hearts, right? I'm sorry.
- 50:39Speaker 5: David Arnold is another example of just living his life,
- 50:43Speaker 5: career going well, really just, yeah, like shows, Lele show,
- 50:48Speaker 5: and stand-up, and writer's room, doing all that stuff.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Netflix specials.
- 50:52Speaker 5: So you, you know, and the crazy thing is with
- 50:53Speaker 5: grief is like the world continues on without catching a break.
- 50:57Speaker 5: Like my brother passed away. People are still going to work.
- 51:00Speaker 5: They still getting gas. They still going to the grocery store.
- 51:02Speaker 5: Your bills are still due. You want the world to stop.
- 51:04Speaker 5: And the world's like, bro, we do not care about that.
- 51:06Speaker 5: Like it's a wrap. When we went to Houston, they
- 51:09Speaker 5: weren't like, oh, because your brother passed away, we're going
- 51:11Speaker 5: to give you the hotel rooms for free.
- 51:13Speaker 2: They're like, yeah, so sorry.
- 51:14Speaker 1: 389. And this car didn't work. Exactly. So yeah.
- 51:20Speaker 5: So yeah, I think comedy is a very helpful part
- 51:24Speaker 5: of dealing with grief, for sure.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Man, you still love it.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Comedy?
- 51:30Speaker 1: Stand-up.
- 51:30Speaker 2: No, not just comedy. Stand-up. If I could do nothing else.
- 51:35Speaker 1: People don't understand.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Stand-up is all I need.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Can you explain to people why?
- 51:40Speaker 5: There is, first of all, laughter's involuntary. So I have
- 51:44Speaker 5: to make you laugh. And fame can't make you laugh.
- 51:48Speaker 5: How funny you were in movies, TV shows, you'll get
- 51:50Speaker 5: a three minutes where people are like, ha ha, yeah.
- 51:52Speaker 5: If you're up there for 45 minutes, I don't care
- 51:54Speaker 5: if I love you. I see niggas I love bomb,
- 51:56Speaker 5: and I'm just like, hey, you can't have it today.
- 51:59Speaker 5: But when you are killing... And you have a whole room,
- 52:03Speaker 5: whether it's 200 or 2,000. And actually, I prefer comedy clubs.
- 52:07Speaker 2: I like people right up top of you. Intimate, hot.
- 52:10Speaker 5: But when you are killing, man, it is an unreal feeling.
- 52:14Speaker 5: When I make a video, I can't tell you like it.
- 52:17Speaker 5: I can see the comments and all that stuff. When
- 52:19Speaker 5: I make a joke that I know is, oh, this
- 52:21Speaker 5: is my closer or this, you're not going to expect this.
- 52:24Speaker 5: And watching it hit you. It's the best.
- 52:27Speaker 2: Feeling on earth.
- 52:27Speaker 5: It's the one thing I... You can take away all
- 52:30Speaker 5: the other stuff. Social media, TV shows, movies. If I
- 52:34Speaker 5: could just perform, stand up for the rest of my life,
- 52:36Speaker 5: I'll be like, bet.
- 52:37Speaker 1: I'm not going to even... I've never asked him this
- 52:39Speaker 1: question before. I'm sorry to interrupt you. Tell him the
- 52:42Speaker 1: feeling of when you have a.
- 52:44Speaker 4: New joke and how you have to take it to
- 52:47Speaker 4: the stage and then that feeling of when it works.
- 52:50Speaker 2: There's like....
- 52:52Speaker 5: The only thing I can compare it to, this might
- 52:54Speaker 5: sound crazy to non-comedians, it's like watching your baby learn
- 52:58Speaker 5: to walk. That's pretty good. Like having an idea in
- 53:03Speaker 5: your mind that you think, oh, this could be funny.
- 53:05Speaker 5: Because the thing about stand-up is everything I think is
- 53:08Speaker 5: funny is not.
- 53:09Speaker 2: It doesn't work in joke form.
- 53:10Speaker 5: I can't figure out how to make every funny thought
- 53:14Speaker 5: I have actually work as a joke. So sometimes you
- 53:17Speaker 5: take it out there and you try and try as
- 53:19Speaker 5: you might, work on it.
- 53:20Speaker 2: Remix it. Remix it.
- 53:22Speaker 1: Do it backwards.
- 53:22Speaker 2: Try a funnier word. Right, right.
- 53:24Speaker 5: There's nothing there. It just ain't got no legs. But
- 53:26Speaker 5: when you have an idea, the best part is you
- 53:28Speaker 5: have an idea and it kills from jump. Woo! But
- 53:30Speaker 5: the second best is like working something and saying, say
- 53:34Speaker 5: I got hit by a car, I got hit by
- 53:35Speaker 5: a Buick.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Because Buick is funnier than car.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Tweaking it a little bit.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Yeah, Buick Skylark is funnier than Buick.
- 53:40Speaker 1: Yes.
- 53:41Speaker 2: So, you know what I mean?
- 53:42Speaker 5: So, finally doing that and the best is getting that
- 53:44Speaker 5: joke to as funny as possible and then you have
- 53:47Speaker 5: to let it go.
- 53:48Speaker 2: Like, once it's at its point, you're like, oh, this
- 53:50Speaker 2: is great. But that feeling, the only thing that's even
- 53:53Speaker 2: close is like sex. Bussing a nut?
- 53:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:57Speaker 2: And killing in a stage.
- 54:00Speaker 1: Wow.
- 54:00Speaker 2: 1A, 1B. Wow.
- 54:02Speaker 1: Dr.
- 54:02Speaker 2: Reverend. Hey, I'd be busting nuts. Hey, pastors do that too.
- 54:08Speaker 1: Hey, man. I don't like him looking me in the
- 54:09Speaker 1: eye as he says it.
- 54:12Speaker 2: That's the closest thing to killing 200 people.
- 54:15Speaker 1: It's true though, T. I think he could do stand-up.
- 54:18Speaker 2: I think so too.
- 54:18Speaker 1: You, you think so? Absolutely.
- 54:20Speaker 5: You have the, you have the, you have the standup
- 54:23Speaker 5: is the master of like five other things. It's originality, creativity, um, pacing.
- 54:28Speaker 5: stage presence and reading an audience. So when you was
- 54:32Speaker 5: doing that press conference, that's stage presence. That's comedy. Yeah,
- 54:36Speaker 5: like you're not afraid of the moment. You know the
- 54:39Speaker 5: weight of it. Like when you run into that star,
- 54:41Speaker 5: you want the attention. So you know how to do that.
- 54:43Speaker 5: It's just, can you be original?
- 54:45Speaker 1: Sustain it. You got to be able to sustain it.
- 54:47Speaker 4: And you got to handle the days you're not funny.
- 54:49Speaker 4: And that's why a lot of people quit.
- 54:52Speaker 1: It's like football. Like every day, like I mean, Some
- 54:55Speaker 1: days you.
- 54:55Speaker 6: Don't have it.
- 54:55Speaker 2: Some days you ain't got it. One dropper class or
- 54:58Speaker 2: two or three or four.
- 54:59Speaker 1: You know what I mean? I've been there.
- 55:00Speaker 4: Let me tell you how easy it would be for you.
- 55:01Speaker 4: Not easy, but how you have the advantage, A, because
- 55:04Speaker 4: of your charisma and all that. But people love the storytelling.
- 55:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:08Speaker 4: It isn't so much, Joe, did you hear what happened this?
- 55:10Speaker 4: And you pick up USA Today and you read a
- 55:12Speaker 4: joke and talk about the president. You have story.
- 55:15Speaker 5: If you told a joke about the church, like, man,
- 55:17Speaker 5: you know, I seen women shouting in skirts. The way
- 55:23Speaker 5: you said you ain't got, you ain't no action because
- 55:25Speaker 5: the slips and the girdles.
- 55:26Speaker 1: You know, I already know. You can't bust no nut
- 55:29Speaker 1: looking at a slip. If you ain't had 100, you
- 55:32Speaker 1: probably could. That's true, that's true. But as like a young,
- 55:36Speaker 1: like a preteen. Look at your hands. That's a comedy hand.
- 55:39Speaker 1: That's funny.
- 55:42Speaker 3: Listen, bro, to see a woman slip, bro, or even
- 55:46Speaker 3: a slit on some legs.
- 55:47Speaker 5: Yes.
- 55:48Speaker 3: Bro, like, I was scared to, like, you in church,
- 55:50Speaker 3: you don't want to look. You don't want to get
- 55:52Speaker 3: caught looking too hard or too long. An ankle is
- 55:54Speaker 3: sexy when you can't see nothing.
- 55:55Speaker 1: Put some dates together for us. We're going to do
- 55:59Speaker 1: part two of y'all shit.
- 56:00Speaker 2: Yo, Chris Live.
- 56:01Speaker 1: Man, I'm trying to tell you. I'm trying to tell you. Man,
- 56:05Speaker 1: that's crazy.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Man.
- 56:08Speaker 3: But I felt you when you talk about seeing your
- 56:11Speaker 3: firstborn or your first child take that first step.
- 56:15Speaker 1: It's the one step and then the two, one, two.
- 56:18Speaker 5: Because you created that joke the same way you created
- 56:21Speaker 5: that kid. If you are original and you are not
- 56:24Speaker 5: hacky and stealing jokes and remixing other people's material, but
- 56:26Speaker 5: if you had an original thought and thought that would
- 56:28Speaker 5: be funny, that's your baby.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Tell me a joke that you're working on right now.
- 56:33Speaker 5: Ooh, I'm not really working on anything at the moment.
- 56:36Speaker 5: I'm really trimming.
- 56:37Speaker 2: The hour I have.
- 56:38Speaker 1: Oh, because you got to get ready.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm shooting a special in three weeks.
- 56:42Speaker 1: Where?
- 56:42Speaker 2: So at the Pacific Electric. I'll get y'all tickets if
- 56:45Speaker 2: y'all want.
- 56:46Speaker 1: Pacific?
- 56:46Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a new Live Nation venue. It opened recently
- 56:49Speaker 5: during Netflix's The Joke.
- 56:51Speaker 2: Where is that? It's like downtown, edge of downtown Chinatown.
- 56:55Speaker 1: The place is beautiful.
- 56:57Speaker 5: Yeah, but like what I'm going to work on right
- 56:59Speaker 5: after that is like, My kids are out of the
- 57:03Speaker 5: house as a father. I did everything and they abandoned me.
- 57:08Speaker 5: I should have abandoned them because at the end of
- 57:10Speaker 5: the day, we ended the same.
- 57:12Speaker 2: Day out the house. I did good.
- 57:13Speaker 1: Empty nesting.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Empty nesting. Like, what does that look like? I'm butthole naked.
- 57:17Speaker 2: The dog's naked. What is that?
- 57:19Speaker 5: I haven't I've been married for 22 years. I haven't
- 57:22Speaker 5: been without kids in our house ever. So now my
- 57:25Speaker 5: son's gone. My oldest son's out the house. This new
- 57:27Speaker 5: experience is what I'll be exploring. What's funny about that?
- 57:31Speaker 5: Because I like to talk about stuff that I'm going
- 57:32Speaker 5: through because it's at the moment because it's most present
- 57:35Speaker 5: and I can be most honest about it. But there's,
- 57:38Speaker 5: I don't know what's funny about that yet, but that's
- 57:39Speaker 5: what I, when I finish the grief tour, that's probably
- 57:41Speaker 5: what I'll be going to.
- 57:42Speaker 2: Actually, I have a whole church hour that I'm working
- 57:44Speaker 2: on after that.
- 57:44Speaker 1: It's totally separate.
- 57:46Speaker 2: Totally separate.
- 57:47Speaker 5: I just want to talk about the story of like
- 57:49Speaker 5: growing up churchy and what that means from beginning to
- 57:52Speaker 5: end from, you know, the truth about me From birth
- 57:57Speaker 5: to 30, I only missed Sunday church three times in
- 57:59Speaker 5: my life.
- 58:01Speaker 2: And then since then, yeah.
- 58:02Speaker 1: What?
- 58:03Speaker 5: Three Sundays from May 1st, 1983 to May 1st, 2003,
- 58:11Speaker 5: only three Sundays. Is that 30? Yeah. But then once
- 58:16Speaker 5: I started touring, I've missed a lot and how much
- 58:18Speaker 5: church has changed and all that stuff. I want to
- 58:20Speaker 5: explore what that looks like. not only has church, black
- 58:24Speaker 5: and white church are different, black church is not the
- 58:26Speaker 5: same now as it was in the early 90s. Like, it's,
- 58:30Speaker 5: that in and of itself is very different. So I
- 58:32Speaker 5: want to explore all those things probably in the next hour.
- 58:34Speaker 3: Like, yeah, I mean, because I just, like, even now, like,
- 58:39Speaker 3: just something about going to church in the South.
- 58:41Speaker 1: Yes. Versus going to a black church out here in California.
- 58:45Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 58:45Speaker 1: Which is where I went.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Very different. Every now and then.
- 58:48Speaker 3: Like I mentioned earlier, like, all women... they came to
- 58:53Speaker 3: church in dresses. Even men, like women, it was acceptable
- 58:59Speaker 3: for women to wear hats. Men weren't, it's a disrespect
- 59:02Speaker 3: for them to come into the house of the Lord
- 59:04Speaker 3: with a hat or a cap on. Like now, I
- 59:07Speaker 3: don't cringe, but I think it's so disrespectful to be
- 59:10Speaker 3: in the house of the Lord. Like I see guys
- 59:12Speaker 3: come in church with their L.A. Dodgers hat on.
- 59:15Speaker 2: For sure.
- 59:15Speaker 1: Or a fedora. I'm looking, I'm like, that's not right.
- 59:22Speaker 2: That church in you deep, T.O.
- 59:24Speaker 1: That's just me.
- 59:26Speaker 3: I know now it's more acceptable for even women to
- 59:29Speaker 3: come in with pants, but I just remember that wasn't
- 59:32Speaker 3: even a thing.
- 59:33Speaker 2: I grew up in church where you couldn't wear pants, period.
- 59:36Speaker 5: We had our church picnic, women playing volleyball in floral
- 59:39Speaker 5: jean skirts. Going to Six Flags in jean skirts. You
- 59:43Speaker 5: could not wear pants, period. In middle school, wearing jeans
- 59:47Speaker 5: underneath your pants. I mean, pants underneath your skirt. and
- 59:50Speaker 5: taking your skirt off and putting it in your locker.
- 59:52Speaker 5: But to people who don't go to church, you're like,
- 59:56Speaker 5: what are y'all talking about?
- 59:57Speaker 3: And honestly, I think that's when I first started seeing
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: women wear pants in church. My recollection was when I
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: came out to California.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: That was like 2012. We different.
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: Yeah, very different. LA church sometimes feel like casting calls.
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: There'd be beautiful people at church. When I was growing up,
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: most of the people in church were ugly because that's
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: how I know you love God.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: Because you're not putting no makeup on.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Please tell me that's in one of your sets.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: No, I just thought of that right now.
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: Hey, write that down for me. Listen, we can stay
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: with you all day, but tell them about four downs. Man,
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: we got four downs. I'll ask you four questions.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: Okay. It's almost like you're at the, I mean, you've
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: had a great career. You got four downs to score touchdowns.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: All right, we in the red zone.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: See, my guy, he already knows.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: First down. All right.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: Funniest person who deserves more recognition?
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Wow, that's a great question.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: Yeah, we come up with great questions.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: That is a really good question.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Let's talk to Brendan Carter.
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: I'm going to say Regina Hall. I think Regina Hall
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: is a comedic genius as an actress.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: I think.
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: Had she been born with white skin, she would have
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: had 20, 30 more movie opportunities than she's had. I
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: think she's brilliant. She was brilliant. Me and my wife
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: just watched a show with her, Five Night Weekend or
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: something like that. Very girly pop show. I was being
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: a good husband. She was brilliant as a dramatic actress.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Watching the show made you a good husband.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: Absolutely. I was locked in. Sometimes you gotta just lock
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: in on the show your wife watches.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: We watched Love Island Reunion yesterday.
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: I was right there for that.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: That's at least three rounds of golf for me.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: That's how it works.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: You got to trade. You got to trade.
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: But yeah, Regina Hall is, she was so funny in
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: the thing like the man interviews for the press conference. Man,
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: that's one of the funniest bits ever. But yeah, I
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: would say Regina Hall. Yeah, she's just brilliant. She's good
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: friends with a crush of mine.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I know who it is. No, you don't. S.L. How
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: do you know? I'm Chris Spencer. Go to secondary. That's
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: what I do for a living. Flag on the plate.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Jumped off. Flag on the plate.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: Jumped off.
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: Second question, man. Lesson you wish you knew at 25.
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: At 25, I wish I knew that I was already
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: on the right path. I think I thought there was
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: a certain way you have to do things.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: You got to move to LA. You got to do this.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: You got to do that.
- 1:02:28Speaker 5: I didn't realize that everything that was happening in my
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: life was important for the trajectory of my life. So
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: in 25, I was in Washington just doing plays, doing stand-up,
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: things like that.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: And I was just like, man, I'm not making it.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: I'm not doing it. All those things. But at that time,
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: I already was doing it. I was already building my thing.
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: And I was just like, I'm not going to be
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: able to make it unless I move to LA or
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: New York or Atlanta. But I was already building my pathway.
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: So the blueprint that you thought There's no blueprint.
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: The path that I'm on, I can't point to somebody
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: who's 20 years ahead of me who's walked this path.
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: Because of the internet, it kind of shook the traditional path.
- 1:03:10Speaker 5: When I was watching stand-ups, you had to get A
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: late night show on Carson, you know, that was going
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: to do it. Or if you were black, it was
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: Comic View, you know, Def Comedy Jam, that was going
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: to do it. Outside of that, I don't know how
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: you got a TV role or movie. For a stand-up, like,
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: everybody I watch, Bernie and Chris Tucker and Martin, they
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: all had a stand-up set you could point to, like, oh,
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: that's probably why he got that movie. So if you
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: can't get on those shows, I don't know what to
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: tell you. Like, I don't know how you get a
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: show built around you. You know, Chris Rock, like, They
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: were killing. So for me, it was like, now I
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: want to be somebody that you can point to, okay,
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: Kev on stage did this, this, that, and that, and
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: I can do that. But, you know, at 25, I
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: didn't see that, but I was still on the right path.
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: Kev, it's third down. You haven't gotten to the end
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: zone just yet. What haven't you done yet that you
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: would be excited to do?
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: I haven't done a big budget movie or TV show. Like,
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: Huge budget.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: No, no, I'm just saying, yeah. Not those $ 800 checks.
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly. I would love to see what it's like
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: to do things. Because the thing is, the less money
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: you have, the harder it is for everybody. The more
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: money a budget has, the less roles any individual person
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: has to do. When you're on my level, you might...
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: My brother-in-law works with me. He'll plan to travel, pick
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: up the crafty, arrange the thing, and then he might
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: have to be in a sketch.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: Like, hey, Greg, can you play the bouncer? No problem.
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: You know, when you're on that Disney set I was
- 1:04:33Speaker 5: talking about, all you do is push this dolly forward
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: and back all day long.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: You don't even touch nothing.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Not allowed to touch nothing.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: Union rules. If you ain't on the grip team, you
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: can't unplug that light.
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: You have to call radio for somebody on that with
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: the right union to unplug that light. And they will
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: go to blows over you touching that thing. It's like
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: legal ramifications, all that type of stuff. And they be
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: having a good lunch, too. And they be having pass-arounds,
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: hot food. They have fried chicken in New Orleans.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: You ain't missing none of that, huh?
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: I am missing that. That's what I want.
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: Got you.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: Got you.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: All right. Kev, fourth down. All right.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: You haven't gotten in the end zone yet. You're inching
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: in there. You're inching in there. You know what I mean?
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: You want Marshawn Lynch.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: I'm fair.
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: On the first carry, you didn't get in there.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: Fourth down.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: That's your team too, right?
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: That's my team. To this day, I don't understand.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: Nobody in the world does.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: Hand him the ball. If we go, if he gets
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: stopped every time, I could live with it. Hater. Why
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: y'all don't just hand it to him again? You on
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: the one yard line.
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: Fourth down, Kev. All right. What's the next version of
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Kevin Fredericks? Oh, my God.
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: Y'all are killing it.
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: My next version, I would love to be at a
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: point in my career where I could Take an idea
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: and a concept from somebody who's brilliant in Mississippi or
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: South Carolina. And because of my connections, clout, access to resources,
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: I can say that's a brilliant movie.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: I want to make that.
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: KevOnStage presents this person's movie. I can cast it, produce it,
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: and it become a success. I want to be big
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: enough that I don't have to be in it, but
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: my name carries enough weight that it'll get it made.
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: So you'll call the shots, because you wear so many
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: hats right now. So you want to just almost kind
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: of like wear one hat.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: After stand-up, the thing I like the most is creating
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: opportunities for other people.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: And there's so many talented black people out there who
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: don't have access to Los Angeles or the resources or whatever.
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: And I think when I get to that phase of
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: my career where it's like, okay, we got this to Kev.
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: He wants to produce this. He's going to cast X, Y,
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: and Z or whoever. And it's successful, whatever that means,
- 1:06:53Speaker 5: because it might not be box office by that time.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: It might be views.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: Whatever success is.
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: Whatever successful is, I would love to be that, to
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: have that much weight with what I do.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: Shot caller.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: Tell people where they can find you.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: You can find me everywhere. KevOnStage.com. Except TikTok, somebody stole
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: KevOnStage from me. So it's KevOnStage TikTok. I don't know
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: how they did it.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: Cheyenne Bryant, give them back KevOnStage. And they probably want
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: you to buy it. Yeah.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. It's not worth it to me.
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: On Tubi, you can see two seasons of Safe Space
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: right now, the Ball Brothers show, some podcasts. And this fall,
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: the airport will be on Tubi. I'm very excited about that.
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: And then February, Grief Sucks will be on Tubi.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: Churchy.
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: And Churchy is on Paramount +. You can watch two
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: seasons of that on Paramount +.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: So yeah, that's enough.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: Black people improv?
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: Black people don't do improv will be on Tubi soon.
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: It's on there a little bit on there now. Yeah,
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: black people don't do improv.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: We didn't get to talk about your huge Tubi deal.
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: Yes. Tell us a quick little snippet about that.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: Yeah, Tubi. Yeah, Tubi.
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: I have the blessing and privilege of signing the most
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: expansive creator partnership in Tubi's history.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: Three years, six projects.
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: How much?
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: Two features. You know, God is amazing. Yeah.
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: It's enough that I don't have to pay for it myself,
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: which is what I was doing in the past. I
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: maintain creative control over the projects, still own them. It's
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: licensed to 2B, and I have back-end participation on those.
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: So that sort of deal didn't exist in Hollywood.
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: They paying him a lot. He wearing a shirt with
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: some holes in it. It cost about $ 500. Ain't no
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: way my grandma would... Grandma, can you buy me this?
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: You can't buy a holey shirt. You can't have earrings.
