- 2:19Speaker 1: a play where a prop gun fires a real bullet,
- 2:23Speaker 1: narrowly missing this star Bella, declaring the theater a crime scene.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Travis has suspects galore, and luckily he has Amy by
- 2:31Speaker 1: his side, who uses her expertise in who Done it?
- 2:36Speaker 2: Our director and writer both returned from the pilot movie.
- 2:39Speaker 2: John Christian Plumber directed this and all seven Mystery one
- 2:42Speaker 2: oh one movies. This is the second and final Mystery
- 2:45Speaker 2: one oh one movie, written by.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Blair Hayes, Returning to our cast, we have Christopher Palaja,
- 2:52Speaker 1: Jill Wagner, Robin Thomas has Graham, Sarah Sarah Dugdell as
- 2:58Speaker 1: Claire Preston Vanderslice as Bud and Louriza Tranco as Lacey Luke.

- 3:06Speaker 2: Garage Sale Mysteries as well as Curious Cater on Hallmark.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Outside of the network, he has appeared in Family Law
- 3:12Speaker 2: and Hudson and Rex. For a total of forty eight
- 3:14Speaker 2: acting projects. Rika Sharma plays Bella Brightman. Rica has a
- 3:21Speaker 2: strong sci Fi presence among her eighty acting projects, including
- 3:25Speaker 2: including Battlestar Galactica, The one hundred and Roswell New Mexico.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Christy Burke plays Josie Hart. Speaking of sci Fi, her
- 3:33Speaker 2: most recent project is a starring role in the arc
- 3:36Speaker 2: available to stream on Peacock. Matthew Kevin Anderson plays Duncan
- 3:40Speaker 2: with one hundred and eleven acting credits. Anderson was last
- 3:43Speaker 2: seen on Hallmark's Love and Jane from twenty twenty four.
- 3:48Speaker 2: He also appeared in Lights Camerack, Christmas game set, Love
- 3:52Speaker 2: and fan favorite Flip That Romance. Colin Lawrence plays Sebastian
- 3:57Speaker 2: Ducaine Colin can currently be found playing the role of
- 3:59Speaker 2: Preacher Virgin River, but you might also recognize him from
- 4:02Speaker 2: his role on the Christmas and Evergreen collection of movies
- 4:06Speaker 2: and finally, the Mystery one on one movie Playing Dead,
- 4:09Speaker 2: originally aired on June twenty third, twenty nineteen. I have
- 4:14Speaker 2: a question for you, uh huh.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Before we break? Is it wild that they put three
- 4:20Speaker 1: of these movies out in one year?
- 4:22Speaker 3: Yes? I find that fascinating.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I like they've completely abandoned that kind of schedule. Yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five, given that we've had three total
- 4:32Speaker 1: mystery movies all year long.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Don't get misstarted.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Let's take a quick break and come right back with
- 4:38Speaker 1: first impressions. Hey, Wendy, what is your first impression of
- 4:50Speaker 1: Mystery one oh one Playing Dead? Well, I'd like you
- 4:53Speaker 1: to raise your hand if you also yelled nope. When
- 4:56Speaker 1: they had that monkey toy scene at the beginning. Was
- 5:01Speaker 1: that terrifying or was it just me? Truly the creepiest
- 5:05Speaker 1: thing I have ever seen. I have so many thoughts
- 5:07Speaker 1: on it, but my first.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Impression is you've heard of a love triangle.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I think this movie presents a love pentagon oh, I
- 5:16Speaker 2: didn't actually count it out figure out how many points
- 5:18Speaker 2: are involved. There's just so many interlocking relationships. And this
- 5:21Speaker 2: person likes this person, but it's betraying this person.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Is so much going on. It's a lot. It's a lot.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Let's talk about what we liked.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Well, May I speak to your first impression?
- 5:33Speaker 1: Sure?
- 5:33Speaker 2: I said in our last Mystery one on one review
- 5:36Speaker 2: that I find them to do a good job bringing
- 5:39Speaker 2: the creepy. I was not prepared for that monkey, and
- 5:44Speaker 2: I don't know if you saw it, but during that
- 5:47Speaker 2: scene when Claire is down I've got thoughts about this
- 5:50Speaker 2: in my wishes, but down on the ground investigating that monkey.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And the baseball bat polls the light's back, I was like, whoa,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I see that.
- 6:00Speaker 3: And then she gets whacked.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I mean a plus I wanted to stand up and cheer.
- 6:07Speaker 1: It was very creepy, very well done in the very
- 6:11Speaker 1: best way. I agree. I that whole scene with her,
- 6:17Speaker 1: I was like, look at badass Claire going in there
- 6:19Speaker 1: where the baseball baths, Like yeah, girl. But then also
- 6:24Speaker 1: that monkey scared the crap at me. I don't know
- 6:26Speaker 1: it just it was creepy, triggered some weird like horror movie.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Huh.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Something that I may have seen as a child that
- 6:35Speaker 1: really freaked me out when I I used to babysit
- 6:39Speaker 1: when I was in my teens, and I can remember
- 6:42Speaker 1: hearing over the baby monitor a sound in one of
- 6:45Speaker 1: the kids rooms, and I went in their room and
- 6:49Speaker 1: there was a toy on the floor of their room
- 6:51Speaker 1: that was like a dog with wheels on it, and
- 6:55Speaker 1: it was like flipped over on its back, so the
- 6:57Speaker 1: wheels were just spinning. Get hit ry, turned itself on.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I've never forgotten about that. It was terrifying. Oh my gosh,
- 7:07Speaker 1: oh my gosh, so scary, so scary. I gotta say,
- 7:11Speaker 1: along with that scary monkey, I did think that the
- 7:17Speaker 1: light crashing down on set when they're in the play,
- 7:21Speaker 1: that gave me a good jump scare as well. I'm
- 7:23Speaker 1: not looking to be like scared watching these movies, are
- 7:26Speaker 1: like frightened, but I thought, like I didn't see it coming,
- 7:30Speaker 1: so it scared me, like it wouldn't have scared everybody
- 7:33Speaker 1: else who was actually there. You know, I think it
- 7:37Speaker 1: was very well done. I think those those kind of
- 7:39Speaker 1: scary scenes were very well done in this movie. Something
- 7:43Speaker 1: that carries over from movie one is the Travis and
- 7:45Speaker 1: Amy Banter is chef's kiss to me, especially when Amy
- 7:51Speaker 1: she's a girl out from my own heart.
- 7:52Speaker 2: She starts telling like a deeply involved story and Travis
- 7:55Speaker 2: is like, you got to push through the backstory.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I loved it, loved it, loved it. One of my
- 8:00Speaker 1: favorite lines in the Holy movie. Yeah, loved it, loved it.
- 8:06Speaker 1: I know we've talked about, like at length in movie one,
- 8:09Speaker 1: about the chemistry between Travis and Amy, but I would
- 8:14Speaker 1: like to also point out that I think that Amy
- 8:17Speaker 1: and her dad Graham have fantastic not like romantic chemistry,
- 8:22Speaker 1: but just fantastic chemistry as.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Actors, Like huh.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I think Robin Thomas really grounds the scene that they're
- 8:30Speaker 1: both in, Like he's such a solid actor.
- 8:35Speaker 3: And it was during.
- 8:36Speaker 1: This movie that I was like, damn it. I think
- 8:40Speaker 1: I really like Joe Wagner as well. I think that
- 8:47Speaker 1: her portrayal, and I talked about this too, but her
- 8:49Speaker 1: portrayal of Amy is like it's rooted in like a
- 8:54Speaker 1: very realistic tone, like she doesn't do anything that's like
- 8:58Speaker 1: too reckless. I mean, she does do reckless things, but
- 9:00Speaker 1: like it's not she doesn't come off as like a buffoon, right,
- 9:07Speaker 1: My favorite part of it is that she just absolutely
- 9:10Speaker 1: refuses to listen to Travis and Hit, but her persistence
- 9:14Speaker 1: always pays off, like he always rolls over to her.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Yet that caring forward into some future movies, I'm like, girl,
- 9:21Speaker 2: at some point you do need to listen to the
- 9:24Speaker 2: actual police.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Officer in the room. Yeah, yeah, but it does work
- 9:28Speaker 3: for her there.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Yeah, their fire has not gone out at all for me.
- 9:34Speaker 2: In the last movie, we talked about the sheer volume
- 9:37Speaker 2: of characters and suspects, and that aspect carries over to
- 9:42Speaker 2: this movie as well. There are so many potential suspects
- 9:47Speaker 2: in this movie. I'm very curious from the listeners how
- 9:50Speaker 2: they feel about this level of storytelling when for me,
- 9:55Speaker 2: I find it hard to keep track of all of
- 9:58Speaker 2: the stories and the way these characters are interrelated. However,
- 10:02Speaker 2: I know we're still talking about likes. The storytelling is impressive.
- 10:07Speaker 2: I think they absolutely must have a murder board behind
- 10:11Speaker 2: the scenes when they're building these movies to tie them
- 10:13Speaker 2: all together. And we've seen mysteries with a lot of characters,
- 10:19Speaker 2: and what I will say about these mystery one on
- 10:22Speaker 2: one movies, the first two that we've talked about is
- 10:24Speaker 2: they do figure out how to make all of these
- 10:27Speaker 2: characters work together. Yeah, they're not just there. They all
- 10:32Speaker 2: have some little role. They all have some little role.
- 10:36Speaker 2: I really loved Colin Lawrence's Sebastian Jukne role. He's probably
- 10:40Speaker 2: my favorite external character, like non main character supporting character.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Goodness, I got there in this movie. He just gets
- 10:51Speaker 1: I think it's a very different role than we've seen
- 10:53Speaker 1: him play. His roles on Christmas and Evergreen is kind
- 10:56Speaker 1: of like a quieter dad fall in love with Holly Robinson.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Pete's character, his role on Virgin Rivers also kind of
- 11:03Speaker 1: I mean, he's a little more serious here. He just
- 11:06Speaker 1: gets to be fun and loud and obnoxious and I
- 11:09Speaker 1: really enjoyed it. And he's like, yeah, I did make
- 11:13Speaker 1: that light drop and I did shoot that bullet. Okay,
- 11:17Speaker 1: oh my gosh. That was so funny in that particular
- 11:20Speaker 1: scene where he's like, yeah, so what was like what? Yeah,
- 11:26Speaker 1: very funny. Speaking of all these characters, I did enjoy
- 11:30Speaker 1: the twist of Duncan and Josie being siblings and that
- 11:33Speaker 1: their parents were killed by Elliott's Scanley business like like
- 11:37Speaker 1: talk about like plotting it out right, But that was
- 11:40Speaker 1: such a good twist.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Uh huh.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I mean it took a lot to get there, but
- 11:44Speaker 1: I like what they did.
- 11:45Speaker 3: I like what they did. I like what they did too.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Finally, I'm just going to hear oh one two more
- 11:54Speaker 1: quick little things. I love And I know you you
- 11:58Speaker 1: referenced it earlier when Travis was like, Amy, you gotta
- 12:00Speaker 1: get to the point, because she's always seen always referencing literature.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And I actually really enjoy it because I think it
- 12:10Speaker 1: gives her some credibility as like she's someone who understands
- 12:15Speaker 1: the complexities of crime, and but she's she's got to
- 12:19Speaker 1: explain it to us the viewers at home too, right,
- 12:23Speaker 1: but as well as whoever she is she's within her
- 12:26Speaker 1: scene or whatever.
- 12:27Speaker 3: I like that.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I like it a lot.
- 12:29Speaker 2: This movie has a lot of exposition like that, where
- 12:32Speaker 2: she has to explain to the audience by explaining it
- 12:35Speaker 2: to people she's on screen with. She's like, oh, I'm
- 12:38Speaker 2: the drama turk for this play, and then she's like
- 12:39Speaker 2: a drama.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Turk is.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Like, Okay, you gotta dumb it down for the audience
- 12:46Speaker 1: a little bit. But this is the most I've seen
- 12:49Speaker 1: it happen in these movies where there's a lot of
- 12:53Speaker 1: external explanation. Yeah.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:56Speaker 1: My final like was and it's simple. It's the stunning
- 13:00Speaker 1: landscape shots and the I don't I have to like, look,
- 13:05Speaker 1: they are supposed to be in like Washington State, I believe, huh.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Obviously it's filmed in Canada, throughout Canada. But there's like
- 13:14Speaker 1: these gorgeous like mountainscapes behind them and they're like these
- 13:18Speaker 1: wide shot angles.
- 13:19Speaker 3: It's stunning.
- 13:21Speaker 2: I know that university. I was like, maybe, yeah, we
- 13:23Speaker 2: should go to college there.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Like, every time I see these movies with these that
- 13:28Speaker 1: these set in Vancouver movies with these gorgeous greenery wide shots,
- 13:32Speaker 1: I'm like, do we need to move to Vancouver for real?
- 13:36Speaker 2: So pretty, are you ready to talk wishes?
- 13:40Speaker 3: Okay?
- 13:41Speaker 2: I just want to follow up with something I said
- 13:43Speaker 2: in the last movie. In the pilot movie, I said
- 13:47Speaker 2: that with Retrospected, it was clear that they had been
- 13:50Speaker 2: laying clues all along, so that someone who was watching
- 13:53Speaker 2: carefully could have perhaps guessed who the murderer was. This movie,
- 13:58Speaker 2: in my opinion, takes an entirely different tape and that
- 14:00Speaker 2: there is information that we don't have until the end.
- 14:02Speaker 2: There's that surprise twist about the siblings and about what
- 14:05Speaker 2: might be their motive for committing murder. So it wouldn't
- 14:09Speaker 2: have been possible for us to do anything other than guess.
- 14:12Speaker 3: And so.
- 14:14Speaker 2: All I'm saying is for me as a viewer. This
- 14:17Speaker 2: is just me working out what I do and don't
- 14:18Speaker 2: like about mysteries. I think I personally like when the
- 14:22Speaker 2: clues are there for me to find. However, I have
- 14:25Speaker 2: another question for the viewers, and I'm curious, do you
- 14:29Speaker 2: like the surprise twist or do you want to be
- 14:33Speaker 2: able to solve the equation on your own?
- 14:36Speaker 1: I like a mix of both, to be honest, Yeah,
- 14:40Speaker 1: I like, give me enough, Like, give me enough.
- 14:45Speaker 3: To feel like I'm figuring out.
- 14:47Speaker 1: But then if you, like, you know, surprise me, yeah,
- 14:51Speaker 1: then I like that. Yeah.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I think if they're able to surprise you, sometimes the
- 14:55Speaker 2: surprises are like come on, But this one I was like, oh, hey,
- 14:58Speaker 2: I like where.
- 14:59Speaker 3: That came from.
- 15:00Speaker 1: M M. Do you have any other wishes I want
- 15:04Speaker 1: to say about Claire?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Yeah, much like I said, in the last movie, we
- 15:08Speaker 2: had someone who's a bad criminal, Claire's a terrible cop.
- 15:10Speaker 3: In the moment in.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Which she walks into that potential crime scene alone, at
- 15:16Speaker 2: no point does she check behind her.
- 15:19Speaker 3: She's in the dark.
- 15:20Speaker 2: There's a creepy monkey, and rather than looking around to
- 15:23Speaker 2: see who might there, she gets on the floor and
- 15:25Speaker 2: leaves herself completely vulnerable to attack.
- 15:27Speaker 1: The monkey alone should have been clue to like get out, reverse,
- 15:31Speaker 1: call for backup. I was kind of shocked. I was like,
- 15:34Speaker 1: what does she do running at five point thirty in
- 15:35Speaker 1: the morning. I mean, I know people exercise it earlier,
- 15:39Speaker 1: but I was like, that's too early for me.
- 15:41Speaker 3: The sun is not out.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Wow. Speaking of Claire, and speaking to something you mentioned
- 15:47Speaker 1: earlier in the Likes, Amy's reaction to Claire being attack
- 15:51Speaker 1: seemed under off. No. She was like, Claire your partner,
- 15:57Speaker 1: Bud's girlfriend. I'm like, okay, I see what you're doing here.
- 16:00Speaker 1: You have to explain to everybody who didn't see movie
- 16:03Speaker 1: one who Claire is. But in movie one, I believe
- 16:07Speaker 1: they established that Claire was actually a former student of.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Amy's at some point.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Like she knew who Claire was. Oh interesting, I could
- 16:19Speaker 1: be wrong, but she knew who Claire was. She's also
- 16:22Speaker 1: the daughter of the police chief. Yes, just this is
- 16:25Speaker 1: not like some random person. It just but I get
- 16:30Speaker 1: what I had to do. It just was funny. Here's
- 16:33Speaker 1: my other wish, And I'm curious what you think about it,
- 16:36Speaker 1: if you even bumped on this at all. But but
- 16:39Speaker 1: I had some concern when I saw that prop gun.
- 16:43Speaker 1: And of course this movie was made before the twenty
- 16:47Speaker 1: twenty one incident involving Alec Baldwin where a cinema photographer
- 16:52Speaker 1: was killed on set by a supposedly cold gun.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Yes, the movie this.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Made me all very very very uncomfortable to watch.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Yes, same, I did think about that.
- 17:03Speaker 1: As well, and I and I had wondered because like,
- 17:06Speaker 1: there are such strict rules in place and protocols in place. Obviously,
- 17:12Speaker 1: I don't know what happened on that movie Rust where
- 17:15Speaker 1: something somebody was killed, but how does that work in
- 17:20Speaker 1: like a community playhouse?
- 17:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I got it.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I have to assume they are absolutely not using guns
- 17:26Speaker 1: with blanks in them in the community playhouse. I would
- 17:29Speaker 1: be so uncomfortable with that as an audience member. Yeah, yeah, interesting,
- 17:33Speaker 1: but it didn't sit with me.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Well, no, I agree, it's not a knock on the movie.
- 17:39Speaker 1: It's in like, how are you supposed to know that?
- 17:41Speaker 1: And this was several years of anyway anyway, But that's
- 17:46Speaker 1: all for my wishes let's talk to you. You see that
- 17:49Speaker 1: I have a few Yeah, let's hear him. The Garrison
- 17:53Speaker 1: Hospital sign is clearly a digital overlay. Oh yeah, I
- 17:58Speaker 1: just hate when signed looks fake. Me too.
- 18:01Speaker 3: It's a pet peeve of mine. It just bothers me
- 18:04Speaker 3: so much.
- 18:06Speaker 1: It must be because back in my teen years when
- 18:09Speaker 1: I watched Beverly Hills nine or two Winner and they
- 18:11Speaker 1: would put like the fake hotel name where Dylan lived
- 18:16Speaker 1: as a teenager. Oh yes, I can't even it's not
- 18:19Speaker 1: even coming to me right now because I'm so old.
- 18:22Speaker 1: But do you remember where he lived?
- 18:24Speaker 3: Isn't it the Bellage? No, no, it's not. That's Las Vegas.
- 18:29Speaker 1: No, that's the BELAGIOH right, I can't remember the Bellage.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Maybe it was the Bellage. Yeah, I think you might
- 18:37Speaker 1: be right. Actually, anyway, it was a terrible shitty sign then,
- 18:42Speaker 1: and it stills a terrible shitty sign. In twenty seventeen,
- 18:46Speaker 1: two more little things in this movie, there was a
- 18:49Speaker 1: real like throwback to Amy and Travis questioning suspects. If
- 18:55Speaker 1: you remember in the first movie, they were going through
- 18:57Speaker 1: all the teachers or staff at the calle who had
- 19:00Speaker 1: the letter M, and I was like, they were doing
- 19:03Speaker 1: like those back to back like quick questioning kind of scene.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Well they did it in this one too, where it
- 19:09Speaker 1: was all the people who were like in the playhouse
- 19:11Speaker 1: that they were h m. Questioning.
- 19:14Speaker 3: It just was almost shot for shot, a nice throwback.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. And finally, my last digity that was was
- 19:22Speaker 1: Travis and Amy chasing Carl through a Christmas tree farm.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, I thought the same thing.
- 19:30Speaker 3: That's funny.
- 19:32Speaker 2: I'm like, this movie is going to be used and
- 19:33Speaker 2: it count down to Christmas movie in twenty nineteen.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, funny.
- 19:38Speaker 2: I have a few digitsy, that's one. This is only
- 19:40Speaker 2: semi relevant, But as I was watching this, my daughter
- 19:42Speaker 2: walked in and she was like, if you're watching Homewark,
- 19:44Speaker 2: how coma doesn't have a giant logo on the screen.
- 19:47Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, because this is Homewark Plus,
- 19:49Speaker 2: not Hallmark Channel. But I thought it was so interesting
- 19:52Speaker 2: that she noticed, because she's right. When you watch on
- 19:54Speaker 2: Hallmark Channel, there's a giant logo and often a giant
- 19:57Speaker 2: promo running across the bottom third of the screen, which
- 20:01Speaker 2: I find very distracting, which, in my opinion, is another
- 20:05Speaker 2: point in the favor of the Hallmark Plus streamer. A
- 20:09Speaker 2: funny comment, Amy says, Carl would have been halfway to
- 20:13Speaker 2: Canada by now, and my brain went obviously because they
- 20:16Speaker 2: are recording in Canada, and in my mind they are
- 20:19Speaker 2: in Canada, even though this movie.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Is set in Washington State.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and finally, my favorite line from an online review
- 20:27Speaker 2: of this movie is quote I like the idea of
- 20:29Speaker 2: English majors using their knowledge of Emma to take down criminals,
- 20:32Speaker 2: because what the hell else are we going to do
- 20:34Speaker 2: with this information?
- 20:36Speaker 1: From the blog Fits of Fury. It made me laugh
- 20:40Speaker 1: out loud. That's funny. What did you rate Playing Dead?
- 20:46Speaker 1: I gave it three point seventy five stars. I gave
- 20:49Speaker 1: it the exact same rating, same as last time.
- 20:51Speaker 3: It's a pore.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Sorry, yeah it is. It is spoiler alert. Things are
- 20:56Speaker 2: heading up in the future for me. Thank you for
