Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: I will never train another generation of Jedi.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: I came to this island to die.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: It's time for the Jedi to end.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: This is Def Wreck, a very unserious podcast about entertainment experiences you will definitely recommend.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Movie, minutia, and television tidbits get ranked, rated, reviewed, and skewed, and in the end, you'll know which one to Def Wreck.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: I'm John McBride.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I'm an authority on popular entertainment and pop culture because I have access to the internet.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Can a hero be happy?
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Belated sequels often think it's more interesting if a familiar character is found in dire straits.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Would it be so bland to see these legends living happily ever after?
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Do you think our heroes deserved better?
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: An honorable mention right off the bat is the diehard sequels.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: John McLean is known for battling terrorists, not talking out his feelings.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Still, it was nice to assume that the fateful phone call at the end of With a Vengeance would have smoothed things over with Holly Gennaro.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Instead, we live with some not so good days.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: It appears that Divorce Hard was more intriguing to the writers.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: A shining example of our faves getting a solid send-off is when Clark and Lois from Smallville appeared in the CW's Crisis crossover event.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Despite being depowered, Clark had delivered a satisfying conclusion, and it wasn't even that hard to do.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Creating conflict is standard, but over time, seeing our beloved heroes get a raw deal leaves viewers depressed.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Life isn't fair, sure, but fiction doesn't have to retread the same deconstruction over and over again.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Make heroes happy again.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: I understand the reasoning behind reintroducing a fan favorite in a dark time at a later point in their life.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Harrison Ford got it twice, once as Indy, and another as Han Solo.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Of course, the Star Wars sequel trilogy appears in this assessment, and that is largely due to the absolute misfire of what fans wanted.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: The approach is simple enough though.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Place the character in a rough spot, and their arc sees them grow, learn, and overcome.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Standard storytelling formula, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: However, these goals can be achieved without subjecting loyal fans to witnessing the heroes they grew up with become hollow shells of their former selves.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: There is being true to life's harsh realities, and then there is rehashing tired tropes.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: It's been done.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: I'm in favor of the fresher idea of watching the good guys have good lives.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: This will be a fairly short rundown since I've already talked about some of these films and also because they are downers.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: That being said, I do think this is an important topic to discuss.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: I'm sure all the big movie decider people will be paying close attention to what I have to say.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: So let's get right to it.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: I'll break down the top three movies that absolutely rain crap all over our favorite characters, and then I'll reveal which is the number one pick I recommend.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: The fifth indie film took the nice ending of a questionable movie and made it muddier.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Instead of watching Indy and Marion enjoy holy matrimony, we were treated to down and out Harrison Ford.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: At least they established that Mutt died on the way back to his home planet.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Reason to wreck.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: If you want to see the Indiana Jones franchise take an even bigger swing than Interdimensional Aliens, then this is the movie for you, The Flash.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Michael Keaton is a lot of fans' favorite Batman, so why not go with the tiresome trope of the stringy-haired, long-bearded recluse?
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: No Batman beyond, but rather a Batman that's beyond repair.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: And he wasn't even the worst one in the Flash movie.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Reason to wreck.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Michael Keaton fans will enjoy seeing him be Batman in a nostalgia trip, but will also be glad once it's over.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: The entire Star Wars sequel trilogy.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Feverish fans waited years to see Luke Skywalker's return, and when he did, it was a blue milk-soaked mess.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Having characters overcome adversity is expected, but no one wanted their expectations to be quite this subverted.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: We were left wishing this really was the Last Jedi.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Reason to Wreck.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: This set of films is a one-and-done viewing experience.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Most folks who grew up with Star Wars and were big fans felt compelled to watch these, and it's purely out of that sense of compulsion that I assume anyone would want to sit through these.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Def Wreck.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Trying to definitely recommend one of these movies is one of those times where I ponder why we do anything.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: We don't have to do any one thing.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Not if we don't want to, but I decided to do this, so I'm going to follow through and proclaim one of these films is worth watching, and that is The Flash.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: It isn't because it's funny when it's trying to be no, it's unintentionally hilarious when it's trying to be epic.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Follow for more entertainment videos about movies, TV, books, pretty much the main three things.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: And I write about superheroes and robots, and I post about pop culture.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Be sure to like and subscribe.
