- 0:01We bring into this life many propensities as well as genetic
- 0:04tendencies which are compounded and accentuated by early
- 0:09learning that takes place in the family and in the society.
- 0:15Prenatal influences, as well as learning that takes place after
- 0:18the birth process and in the very early childhood years, all
- 0:23help form the individual and his actions and reactions.
- 0:28Many traits are locked in during this period that reverberate
- 0:32throughout the life of the individual as they are stored in
- 0:35the subcontinent waiting for their opportunity to spring up
- 0:40and present themselves. We find, therefore, that certain
- 0:45tendencies tend to carry through from one generation to the next,
- 0:49such as tendency toward addiction, bullying behavior,
- 0:54attitudes towards others that lead to prejudice or misogyny,
- 0:59et cetera. Much of this is not a conscious
- 1:02process, but simply impressions that are imbibed and stored.
- 1:08For most people, these things represent the legacy of the past
- 1:12and bring continuity from one generation to the next.
- 1:17It can go much further back, however, as there are inbred,
- 1:21atavistic behaviors that stretch back into the evolution of the
- 1:25animal consciousness in nature. Fight or flight reactions are an
- 1:30example. As the individual takes up the
- 1:34practice of yoga, he begins to confront these deeply embedded
- 1:38tendencies and behaviors and finds that suppression does not
- 1:43eliminate them. They must be painstakingly
- 1:46examined, understood, and the knot of the complex unravelled
- 1:52in order to truly free the being from these things.
- 1:57This is why simply rooting around in the subconscient and
- 2:00allowing these things to rise up is not effective.
- 2:05There must be a controlling and understanding light of
- 2:08consciousness that can master these impulses and apply
- 2:12appropriate means to dissolve or transform them, the mother
- 2:18writes. Quote One is born with a slew to
- 2:22clean before 1 begins to live, and once you have made a good
- 2:27start on the way to the inner transformation and you go down
- 2:31to the subconcient root of the being that exactly which comes
- 2:36from parents, from atavism, well, you do see what it is and
- 2:41all. Almost all difficulties are
- 2:44there. There are very few things added
- 2:46to existence after the first years of life.
- 2:51This happens at any odd moment. If you keep bad company or read
- 2:56bad books, the poison may enter you.
- 2:59But there are all the imprints deep rooted in the subconscious,
- 3:04The Dirty habits you have and against which you struggle.
- 3:08For instance, there are people who can't open their mouth
- 3:11without telling a lie, and they don't always do this
- 3:15deliberately, that is the worst of it.
- 3:19Or people who can't come in touch with others without
- 3:21quarrelling all sorts of stupidities.
- 3:25They are there in the subconscient, deeply rooted.
- 3:29Now, when you have a goodwill externally, you do your best to
- 3:33avoid all that, to correct it if possible.
- 3:36You work, you fight, then become aware that this thing always
- 3:41keeps coming up. It comes up from some part which
- 3:44escapes your control. But if you enter this
- 3:48subconscious, if you let your consciousness infiltrate it and
- 3:53look carefully, gradually you will discover all the sources,
- 3:58all the origins of all your difficulties.
- 4:02Then you will begin to understand what your father's
- 4:05and mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers were.
- 4:10And if at a certain moment you are unable to control yourself,
- 4:13you will understand. I am like that because they were
- 4:18like that. End Quote Reference Sri
