- 0:00Yeah. Ay, I'm Zach Britt from dream On Dreamer and I'm here on
- 0:06Heavy chatting to Chris and it's a pleasure to be here. Yeah, utiful
- 0:10Zach, thanks for joining us, my man, no problem at all,
- 0:14man, thanks for having me, my pleasure. So there's some other pretty
- 0:18big coming up in the dream On Dreamer camp You're gonna get You're actually getting
- 0:22ready for a run and shows supporting of mice and Men starting February twenty thirty
- 0:26Adelaide and Gathererue, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. So it's not far away
- 0:30now, man, Like how many excitement levels. We're pretty pumped. Man,
- 0:35it's been a little while since we've had a run on field, so
- 0:38yeah, we've been on the bench a little long and yeah, we're really
- 0:42excited. We're excited to get out there and stretch our legs again. And
- 0:46it's always fun to just hang out. And especially as you've gone, as
- 0:49we've gotten older and not to it, you know, NonStop all the time.
- 0:54It's really nice when we get to do it now, we really appreciate
- 0:57the time we do get to do it. So yeah, we're pumped men
- 1:00and my cement as such. Heavy hitters. So yeah, it's a real
- 1:03privilege whenever you get to play with bands like that. And I think the
- 1:07more we've grown up now, the more we appreciate these tours because there was
- 1:10a lot of tours that we didn't really take stock, you know, while
- 1:14we were there, and now I think back to a lot of them being
- 1:15like, oh my god, I wish I was a little bit more present
- 1:18minded instead of having six sixty beers every day, and you know, there's
- 1:23good times for that. But I think we're just really excited to make the
- 1:26most of it and get out there with bands that are really epic. Yeah,
- 1:32and I understand yourselves and Siana Skys, who were personally selected by of
- 1:37my cement is that tually, I think so, as far as we've been
- 1:41told, I haven't had to chat to them personally yet, and I'm super
- 1:45excited to get to do that when we meet up on the road. But
- 1:49as these things go, Yeah, word on the grapevine is that they were
- 1:53really keen to get on the road with us, which is awesome. You
- 1:57know, you've got to take that as a massive complement from a band that
- 2:00does as well as they do. So yeah, we're super humbled. It's
- 2:06got to be a good feeling, like someone in their position actually asking for
- 2:10you, bro, Like, it shows that that you're reaching overseas, you're
- 2:14reaching the right people, and you're obviously doing the right thing. Yeah,
- 2:17it's very encouraging to keep to keep doing it, you know, as the
- 2:22Dreamer story goes, you know, we've only kind of really decided to pursue
- 2:25that friendship and in the band together and keep going. There was a lot
- 2:31of time there especially it was like pre COVID when we're really struggling part of
- 2:38me just struggling relationship wise and as a band. So it's really crazy to
- 2:45what you've asked there to have people chasing you, and it does reaffirm that
- 2:50we're we're doing the right thing. Just keep making music and keeping on.
- 2:53You know, maybe you're want to keep drinking those sixty bees per show mate,
- 2:57Maybe that's not impressed it. Maybe that's maybe that's what gets the good
- 3:00stuff done well if they have the sixty there for us, you know.
- 3:12And on that point, man, like, how good is it to see
- 3:15two Australian bands support and international in our own country? Like it doesn't happen
- 3:19enough that we get the recognition we deserved. Yeah, it's amazing. It's
- 3:23really great that they can come out here and be super confident as well and
- 3:27in grabbing bands and putting a lineup on that people are going to be really
- 3:30stoked to see. Yeah, and it's awesome for me as well to Like
- 3:35it's a real walk down memory lane because some of the first tours I ever
- 3:38did in my first band, The Dream the Chase, was with the Skies,
- 3:43Like that was who I dreamt of touring with when when I was a
- 3:46young whipper Snapper were coming up and we wanted the two of them really badly
- 3:51and we could jump on our first tour, played like eagleby town Hall or
- 3:54Eagle b Pise Sorry, all these other spots with them, and so yeah,
- 4:00that's like a friendship. I've known them and played with them for like
- 4:04over sixteen years now, which is pretty insane. Yeah, so or it
- 4:10would have been yeah, probably fifteen years. Fifteen years, so six Yeah,
- 4:15bridging on those two. So it's a pretty awesome thing. I don't
- 4:17see them all the time or anything like that, you know how it is,
- 4:20But now that I get to do that, Yeah, we'll we'll have
- 4:24a really old connection there, so it's awesome go share, and we sort
- 4:28of touched on this robot. You've played all over the world and supported our
- 4:30host of big names, but now are getting older bit, I suppose,
- 4:33and it's you're more focused on the actual music, Like how are you going
- 4:38to approach these shows with avice and men, You're going to approach a bit
- 4:41differently, or I think now I aim with the shows with a massive managed
- 4:47just to play the songs that have really resonated with people the most. You
- 4:51know, A lot a lot of times when we're doing our own headliner,
- 4:55we'll think about it a little more. But when we've only got forty you
- 5:00know, thirty five minutes for forty minutes to give people the best of Dreamer,
- 5:03then we definitely tend to lean towards playing the songs that just get played
- 5:09the most, Like we don't really want to confuse people or like think too
- 5:14hard about it. That's kind of what we agreed on when we came back
- 5:16as well, because sometimes it can all just get a bit convoluted in what
- 5:19you want to do and like maybe you're not feeling super fulfilled in playing a
- 5:25certain set list, but I think we all just get really excited now to
- 5:28play the songs that people want to jump up and down to the most and
- 5:32sing along to every word. So if you sing along to dream Of songs,
- 5:36then I think we're going to be playing those ones now. I didn't
- 5:40actually think about this when I wrote this question down, but you're probably going
- 5:44to have to think about your answer with this one. But yeah, do
- 5:48you treat something like this like you go out there with the attention that you're
- 5:54just there to warm up the crowd for the headliner, or do you go
- 5:56out there with the gend like I want to try and blow these guys off
- 5:59stage and leave a last impression. I think it's always about being a good
- 6:05support. I think you can blow people away without being trying to like outshine
- 6:12or anything like that. I really think there's like an art to that walking
- 6:15that line like and I think you can really do it in a way where
- 6:19the headlining band will really give some chops, will give flowers for that.
- 6:24At the end of the tour, it'll be like, man, it was
- 6:25hard to follow that, But I think in the end that's kind of what
- 6:30you're there to do. You're there to push them to do their best as
- 6:32Well, so if you can really light up a stage and like do something
- 6:36that you think is going to blow them out of the water, then you're
- 6:40going to get to see a better headline show anyway, in my opinion,
- 6:43because the headliners have to pull rank then, you know, so we try
- 6:47to push that, and I think it's all about definitely firing everyone up for
- 6:53that headliner. But if we can make them, you know, dig deeper
- 6:58and want to do better for the crew out, then I think we've done
- 7:00the right thing. Break you, I've grown up. That was the best
- 7:03diplomatic answer I've ever heard. Well, there you go. Maybe I get
- 7:10too many punches. I've got to add to those sixty beers. Maybe we'll
- 7:14do this. You've had those sixty beers, mate, We'll see. Yeah,
- 7:17like, man, there's these guys. Yeah, we're going to blow
- 7:20them out of the water. But what can we actually expect from your set?
- 7:28The shows? What he's not playing for us? We've just yeah,
- 7:31as I was saying, like some of the favorites we love playing don't Lease
- 7:35your Heart. We've got some of the heavy ones in there too. We've
- 7:40also got a bunch of new music coming out, So whether we flex some
- 7:44of that on this tour or not. We're not one hundred percent sure we're
- 7:46jumping into some production days soon, but I think people can just expect that
- 7:51vintage Dreamer, that the stuff that they really want to jump up and down
- 7:56to, and the stuff that there was always the ear worms from us that
- 8:00have kept people coming back. We love playing Runaway. That song's been going
- 8:05crazy online and we can't believe. Yeah, we keep just setting screenshots of
- 8:11how many streams are gone on in that song to each other, being like,
- 8:15oh, this is weird. It's just funny, you know, because
- 8:18all of us are pretty busy in our personal lives and have a lot of
- 8:22other things going on. So it's very encouraging when you get a message being
- 8:26like we just clocked eight million plays on this thing or something and it was
- 8:30just written at Chris's beach house or parents beach house in a real chill session,
- 8:35you know that one, And don't lose your heart for us. So
- 8:37like real favorites, because they were both just written very off the cuff and
- 8:43it was just like the simplest songs and now they're the ones that resonate the
- 8:46most of people. So yeah, people can just expect the ones they've been
- 8:50clocking up plays on, because yeah, they're the ones that we want to
- 8:54get everyone partying into, and that's what's going to push the headliner be better.
- 9:00Chris, I don't want to focus on the negatives here break And to
- 9:07be honest, it's no one else's business but yours. But Dream of Dreamer
- 9:11went on hiatus in twenty twenty and now some more shows last year. So
- 9:15what actually changed to make you come back and try again. I think a
- 9:22lot of it was relationship wise, like we just I mean all of us
- 9:26had that probably had that epiphany through COVID, like you just kind of come
- 9:30through after those two years of just really out outlandishly weird years. And things
- 9:37are still weird now, like to a degree, but those years were really
- 9:41crazy, and I think it made us just trip back what we thought was
- 9:45important. Really simply you get a lot of time to think about stuff then,
- 9:48and especially with music, it's just been gone totally. It was very
- 9:52like it was weird, and it felt like almost a weird, weird sign
- 9:58for us because we were meant to do that last two Everything was sold,
- 10:01like every show was sold, and there was suddenly like twenty six dates,
- 10:07and we had other dates on hold for it, and then we had to
- 10:11push it back like I think five times we pushed that tool back, and
- 10:15then in the end it was like, okay, it was the last decision.
- 10:18We're like, okay, we can, let's just refund everyone, Like
- 10:22we'll refund everyone's tickets. So we do that, and then like two weeks
- 10:26later or something and they're like, you can, okay, now shows can
- 10:30get announced again and all this stuff. But like, so there was a
- 10:33few there was moments like that where we're just like, man, like,
- 10:37what the hell was that? Like that's crazy, and and so that felt
- 10:41just didn't feel right anyway, like it just something weird was happening. So
- 10:46and then when we went to do the last shows, we were like,
- 10:48okay, nothing would work. Booking wouldn't work, so we could only do
- 10:52three shows or something like that. So yeah, again, I don't want
- 10:56to be too long winded, but it just felt it didn't feel right.
- 11:00And then over that time, our relationships all kind of started to grow again
- 11:03and get a lot. We got along a lot better in the times that
- 11:09we were together, and I think it was just the perspective of having those
- 11:13years just being like it didn't really seem that important now, the little things
- 11:18that you were all fucked up about. You know, it was nice to
- 11:24let go of that stuff and to just realize that it wasn't it wasn't healthy
- 11:30to hold on to grudges when you got to hang out with these people for
- 11:33twelve years, you know, and got to do some of the funnest stuff
- 11:37of your life with them. So I think, yeah, it's got to
- 11:41be more profound than that. So we let go of that, and I'm
- 11:45really really happy that we did. Have you been on a Buddhist retreat or
- 11:48some last pace, Yeah, pretty much. I'm pretty much lived a Buddhist
- 11:56retreat. It's amazing. Whatever it is, it's working right, it's working.
- 12:01Oh good, well, sending them all my way and tell them it's
- 12:05a dollar now. So shows coming back, mate, Like, you did
- 12:11a headline tour that was well received and attended, right, But did you
- 12:13did you feel like you had a point to prove when you came back?
- 12:18Yeah? We were all nervous as hell, man, we were. There
- 12:22were so many feelings and so many feelings are just like oh far out,
- 12:24Like do we make the right decision? Are we just flogs? Like are
- 12:28we are we doing the John Farnham right now? There's so many there's you
- 12:33just have imposts in drome doing things because you're like, am I just doing
- 12:37this because I want to come back and like do music for selfish reasons because
- 12:39I missed it. And then as soon as you get out in front of
- 12:45the first crowd, it's just you realize, oh, no, like is
- 12:48this was right? The first song, like just playing one song in front
- 12:52of Melbourne. We opened with the like World in front of Me or Loveless
- 12:56into the World in front of Me, which is the opening of that album
- 12:58anniversary. And it was the first time it was too loud. The crowd
- 13:03was too loud that I couldn't hear anything on stage because it was like I
- 13:07got the world in front of me. It was just like it. It
- 13:09was just so definitely loud, and we all looked at each other, everyone
- 13:13on stage, it's just like whoa okay, like and there was a little
- 13:18smile, like this little half smile of ourselves face as he like turned back
- 13:22to face the drummers drums and catch his breath, and I could just see
- 13:24that he was like whoa like that was that was mint and so I think
- 13:31that that was really a moment straight away. But we've all grown heats,
- 13:35so it makes a lot more sense now because everyone's pulling their weight, Like
- 13:39I'm not just drinking sixty beers and falling out of it. But yeah,
- 13:46there's a lot of crazy stories when we were young, and you think back,
- 13:50and I think for all of us, we'd all probably think like,
- 13:52oh, how did they put up with me at that moment, you know,
- 13:56And being able to think about all that stuff now, I think,
- 14:00yeah, it makes the relationship better because you're just like, oh, yeah,
- 14:03they've put up with some crazy shit we have from each other, you
- 14:05know, And now we can appreciate the fact that we've all changed a lot
- 14:09and everyone's there to like have a real crack and make sure that we're helping
- 14:13each other when we're all stressing out about shit. So I think that's going
- 14:18to make for a better show anyway from us, anytime you see us.
- 14:22So it's really good to be back. What was it like This is going
- 14:24to be hard for you to explain, but what was it like having that
- 14:28connection with fans again? Like when you got out there and you knew that
- 14:31they wanted you back, man, Like, what's that feeling? Like,
- 14:35it's crazy? It's yeah, I don't know. I was like, yeah,
- 14:43I was super spaced out on the whole every show really because it was
- 14:48just so I was like saving my energy every night really just to be able
- 14:52to talk to as many people as I could every night. And yeah,
- 14:56we all I'd say, we were all talking to fans and stuff like two
- 14:58hours every night, you like after the show and you just be there with
- 15:03with heaps of people. And then I think Melbourne had an after party and
- 15:07that party at Cherry Bar was just packed. It was just like and we
- 15:11hadn't had that. I don't think even when Dream was a band before,
- 15:13like we never had that kind of resonance with people. So it means heaps
- 15:18and everyone's story is about, you know, not having made the last shows
- 15:22and being so devo that they hadn't seen us. And then so maybe there
- 15:26is a there is a greater purpose or like a point behind what happened,
- 15:31because it kind of made people realize they wanted to come out and see us
- 15:35maybe or like that fear of lost thing. So maybe we'll just go now
- 15:41again. But no, no, I don't really. I think it's I
- 15:48think it's all changed so much that we're just all in so much better of
- 15:52a headspace that it can't It's not really going to be a negative thing.
- 15:56I don't think it could be. And yeah, any troubles you've ever had
- 16:00as a band growing up, I think we're all just like Inchiller anyway.
- 16:03You just double think yourself, don't you. You usually just got to get
- 16:07out of your own way. Yeah, that's it. That's probably the best
- 16:11way to describe it, to get out of your own way, because I
- 16:15am. Yeah, I'm the same man, and I think we a lot
- 16:19of us are. And I think that's usually some of the best advice.
- 16:23Me and Cal always remind each other, like in writing with Dreamer as well
- 16:27and in life stuff, just to be like, yo, just get out
- 16:30of your own way today. Like make sure you do, because usually the
- 16:34best stuff happens when you just stay out of the way. That's the inspiration
- 16:40of the year already. Bro. Yeah, awesome, man, I'm glad.
- 16:45I'm glad everyone's going to put it up on the wall. I'm sure
- 16:47I'm not the first person to say it, but I'll play it like you'll
- 16:51end up having to sign all these posts with people right that and be awesome
- 16:56your own way. I'm just gonna sell get out of your Own Way posters
- 16:59and the next to next song, Bro write a song called get Out of
- 17:03the Other Way. That'd be great. Yeah, I reckon that could work.
- 17:06There's great premise for a track. Me and cal will be back in
- 17:08the studio cooking some stuff up and Calum Marcel were just in the studio today.
- 17:14So heaps of epic stuff coming. We've got plenty of stuff coming then,
- 17:18so so excited to have it all in the works. Okay maybe,
- 17:21Well, I know people are excited to have you back, Bro, So
- 17:22thanks for your time that I've been pleasure as fucking always the choice. Thank
- 17:27your twenty thirty kicks off mate. I'll be at the Brisbane show so I'd
- 17:32expect to have at least least half of those beers with you anyway. Oh
- 17:36yeah, absolutely, dude. If there's sixty there, there's a few for
- 17:38you for sure, don't you worry. Absolutely legend bro Ro Well we'll see
- 17:42you seeing about a month's time. Yeah, absolutely, Chris, Thanks so
- 17:47much man, always a pleasure. Right to catch us soon.
