Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: A reserved college botany professor meets a spirited New York
- 0:04Speaker 1: nightclub singer, and before long, they are married. But when
- 0:08Speaker 1: he brings his bride home to Old Sharon, a conservative
- 0:12Speaker 1: college town, he has yet to tell his family. Meanwhile,
- 0:16Speaker 1: she is mistaken for the companion of his wayward cousin.
- 0:20Speaker 1: From January 6, 1941, CBS presents Lux Radio Theater, episode 289,
- 0:28Speaker 1: Vivacious Lady, adapted from the 1938 RKO radio pictures film.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Alice Fay and Don Ameche head the cast in this
- 0:37Speaker 1: romantic comedy of Manhattan high spirits meeting academic respectability. We
- 0:43Speaker 1: now take you back to the original broadcast.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Lux.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Presents Hollywood. The Lux Radio Theater brings you Alice Faye
- 1:04Speaker 3: and Don Amici in Vivacious Lady.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, Mr. Cecil B.
- 1:11Speaker 2: DeMille.
- 1:17Speaker 5: Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen. And a salute, an
- 1:21Speaker 5: extra special grade A four-star salute to 1941. We haven't
- 1:25Speaker 5: got a crystal ball handy, so we can't predict what
- 1:28Speaker 5: the hit plays of this new year will be. But
- 1:31Speaker 5: we can make another prediction, that whatever those hits are,
- 1:34Speaker 5: we'll have the cream of the crop right here in
- 1:36Speaker 5: the Lux Radio Theater. And that goes for the star crop, too.
- 1:40Speaker 5: But tonight, since 1941 is yet too young to have
- 1:44Speaker 5: plays of its own, We bring you a comedy that
- 1:47Speaker 5: would be a hit in any year. Vivacious Lady, with
- 1:50Speaker 5: two stars who'd pack any theater, Alice Faye and Don Amici.
- 1:55Speaker 5: You'll hear Don as a young college professor in this
- 1:58Speaker 5: adaptation of the RKO picture. A professor who acquires a
- 2:02Speaker 5: beautiful torch singer as a bride, brings her back to
- 2:05Speaker 5: college and totally upsets the academic calm of the campus.
- 2:10Speaker 5: Alice Faye is the lady, the vivacious lady, who won't
- 2:13Speaker 5: put up with academic calm. especially when it involves the
- 2:16Speaker 5: man she loves. It's a situation that producers call box office,
- 2:21Speaker 5: and that's how we want to start the new year.
- 2:23Speaker 5: You see, our box office is very different from the
- 2:26Speaker 5: kind they have in ordinary theaters, and our box office
- 2:30Speaker 5: reports tell a unique story. They tell of an audience
- 2:33Speaker 5: that covers an entire continent, an audience we have to
- 2:37Speaker 5: please in two ways, with our plays and with our product,
- 2:42Speaker 5: Lux Flakes. Here in the Lux Radio Theater, it takes
- 2:45Speaker 5: plenty of good hard work to please you. But once
- 2:48Speaker 5: you've tried it, we don't have to worry about our
- 2:50Speaker 5: product pleasing you. Summing up for the year 1940, our
- 2:55Speaker 5: box office story has a happy ending because the mailbag
- 2:58Speaker 5: is heavier than ever. From Boston Harbor to the Golden Gate,
- 3:02Speaker 5: more women are finding Lux flakes indispensable at home. And
- 3:06Speaker 5: now we begin 1941 on a very optimistic note by
- 3:09Speaker 5: raising the curtain on the first act of Vivacious Lady.
- 3:12Speaker 5: starring Don Amici as Peter and Alice Fay as Francie.
- 3:22Speaker 5: There's a hot time in the Club Velasquez tonight. Cover charge,
- 3:26Speaker 5: two dollars. The Velasquez is strictly a formal spot. That's
- 3:30Speaker 5: why Peter Morgan looks so out of place. Attired in
- 3:34Speaker 5: a light spring suit and top coat, he stands near
- 3:36Speaker 5: the entrance, his eyes roving anxiously around the room. He's
- 3:40Speaker 5: twisting his hat in his hands That's a mistake, too.
- 3:43Speaker 5: No gentleman in a New York nightclub is permitted to
- 3:46Speaker 5: remain in possession of his hat.
- 3:49Speaker 6: Check your hat, mister.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Oh, of course.
- 3:51Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 3:53Speaker 7: Say, maybe you could help me. I'm looking for a Mr.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Keith Beston.
- 3:56Speaker 7: Have you seen him?
- 3:56Speaker 6: Mister, we haven't seen anything but Mr.
- 3:58Speaker 8: Beston since last Tuesday.
- 4:00Speaker 7: Oh, then he's here?
- 4:00Speaker 6: The office table on the right near the wall.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Thank you, thank you very much.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Keith.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Keith!
- 4:10Speaker 9: Well, well, Peter!
- 4:11Speaker 4: Peter!
- 4:12Speaker 7: Keith, I've been looking all over for you. This is
- 4:13Speaker 7: the tenth place I've been in.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Why, Professor, you sound bitter.
- 4:16Speaker 7: We haven't got much time. Come on, you have to hurry.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Oh, sit down, Peter.
- 4:19Speaker 7: I can't. Do you know what time it is? Don't
- 4:20Speaker 7: you realize we have to catch a train for old Sharon?
- 4:22Speaker 4: Oh, now, don't you worry.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Don't.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Don't worry.
- 4:25Speaker 7: This is the last time I'm going to act as
- 4:27Speaker 7: your nurseman when you come to New York for one
- 4:28Speaker 7: of these semi-annual frolics. Now, come on.
- 4:30Speaker 10: No, I'm not going to budge from this chair till
- 4:32Speaker 10: the girl I've just fallen in love with says she'll
- 4:34Speaker 10: marry me.
- 4:34Speaker 7: Oh, so that's it. Well, it's a good thing I
- 4:37Speaker 7: found you.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Oh, Peter, she's beautiful, exciting.
- 4:40Speaker 7: You aren't serious.
- 4:41Speaker 4: I am serious. You haven't any monopoly on seriousness. Who
- 4:44Speaker 4: is this girl? A girl. She sings here like a bird.
- 4:48Speaker 7: Now, listen, Keith.
- 4:48Speaker 4: The 4 a.m.
- 4:49Speaker 7: Train leaves at exactly 4 a.m., and I'm going to
- 4:51Speaker 7: be on it, and so are you.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Waiter. Yes, sir?
- 4:53Speaker 7: Give this man a check. I'm going to get your
- 4:54Speaker 7: hat and coat.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Take your time, Professor.
- 5:00Speaker 2: There I go, bleeding with my heart again.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Sure.
- 5:05Speaker 7: And do you mind if I use your phone?
- 5:06Speaker 4: Go ahead, but it'll cost you.
- 5:09Speaker 11: Hello.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Hello.
- 5:10Speaker 7: Long distance, please.
- 5:10Speaker 12: Hey, Charlie.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Long distance.
- 5:13Speaker 9: All right.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I'll take care of it. Long distance.
- 5:14Speaker 7: I want to speak to old Sharon, Pennsylvania. Yes, old Sharon, 242.
- 5:18Speaker 7: Reverse the charge. I want to speak to Peter Morgan, Sr.
- 5:22Speaker 7: And if you can't get him at that number, try
- 5:24Speaker 7: the university.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Thank you. He's the president, you know.
- 5:27Speaker 6: Yeah, what's Roosevelt doing?
- 5:29Speaker 7: I mean the president of the university.
- 5:31Speaker 13: Oh.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Hello, hello, Dad? Hello, Dad, this is Peter.
- 5:35Speaker 6: There's a number going on.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Hello, Dad? Dad, I found him.
- 5:40Speaker 6: If you shout any louder, you won't need that phone.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Look, Dad, I'm in a nightclub. Now, now, now, don't
- 5:45Speaker 4: get excited. I'm leaving right away.
- 5:48Speaker 2: What?
- 5:49Speaker 4: It's a girl this time.
- 5:51Speaker 8: How's the mother doing?
- 5:52Speaker 4: She's fine.
- 5:53Speaker 14: What?
- 5:54Speaker 4: Yes, yes, Dad.
- 5:55Speaker 7: You know the type of girl you find in these places. Well,
- 5:58Speaker 7: if there are any entanglements, I'll straighten them out.
- 6:00Speaker 4: All right, Dad. Goodbye.
- 6:02Speaker 7: Thank you very much, Miss.
- 6:03Speaker 8: Give my love to Mother, Sonny.
- 6:08Speaker 7: Now, listen, I just phoned old Sharon.
- 6:10Speaker 13: Oh.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Hello.
- 6:12Speaker 7: Uh, how do you do?
- 6:13Speaker 2: Where's Keith?
- 6:15Speaker 7: I don't know. He was sitting right here, and I.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Well, he disappeared while I was doing my number.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Oh, then you.
- 6:21Speaker 7: Then you... Oh, oh, oh.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Well, what's the matter?
- 6:25Speaker 7: Uh, nothing, nothing. I just didn't expect you to be...
- 6:29Speaker 7: I mean, I expected you to be... Uh, you're so different.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Say, are you swacked?
- 6:36Speaker 7: I beg your pardon?
- 6:36Speaker 2: I said, are you tight?
- 6:39Speaker 7: Uh, no, no, I'm not intoxicated, if that's what you mean.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Well, that's what I meant, all right.
- 6:43Speaker 7: No, I'm just... Uh, well, the only way I can
- 6:45Speaker 7: explain it, uh, I can't.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Well, that's clear. I, uh, I.
- 6:50Speaker 5: Beg your pardon, sir.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Uh, yes, we do. Mr. Bessington asked me to tell
- 6:52Speaker 4: you he's gone to the hotel to pack. He'll meet
- 6:54Speaker 4: you on the train to Old Sharon.
- 6:55Speaker 7: Oh, uh, thank you. Yes. Well, I guess I, uh,
- 6:59Speaker 7: I better get along.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess you better. That friend of yours needs
- 7:02Speaker 2: somebody to take care of him.
- 7:04Speaker 7: Well, that's what I'm here for. Uh, Keith and I
- 7:06Speaker 7: are cousins.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Oh, cousins.
- 7:08Speaker 7: Yes.
- 7:09Speaker 13: You know, you know, I think he's a little wacky.
- 7:11Speaker 13: I've only known him a week, but every night since,
- 7:13Speaker 13: he's asked me to marry him. And every time I
- 7:15Speaker 13: say no, he gets wackier.
- 7:17Speaker 7: Well, I was appointed to Committee One. The folks thought
- 7:19Speaker 7: it would be an excellent idea if I came along
- 7:20Speaker 7: and saw that he got home safely.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good thing you're here. Look, is there
- 7:25Speaker 2: anything the matter with me? What? I mean, is my
- 7:29Speaker 2: hair on crooked or something? The way you keep looking
- 7:32Speaker 2: at me, I'm getting a little uncomfortable.
- 7:34Speaker 7: Why, I'm sorry. See, this is the first time I've
- 7:38Speaker 7: ever spoken to an actress.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Well, I'm not exactly an actress. I'm a singer. Oh. Oh.
- 7:44Speaker 2: So you don't have to be afraid.
- 7:46Speaker 7: Do you sing again tonight?
- 7:48Speaker 2: No, no. That was my last show.
- 7:50Speaker 7: Oh, all finished?
- 7:51Speaker 4: All finished.
- 7:52Speaker 7: Have a cigarette?
- 7:53Speaker 2: No, thanks.
- 7:55Speaker 7: Something to drink?
- 7:56Speaker 2: No. No, I never use it.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Oh.
- 7:58Speaker 7: I couldn't get you anything to eat. Yes.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Yes, I believe I would like something to eat.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Oh, fine.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Waiter. Oh, no, no, no.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Not in here.
- 8:06Speaker 2: The food's terrible here.
- 8:07Speaker 7: Oh, well, then.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Well.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Do you want to take me out or don't you?
- 8:11Speaker 7: Oh, yes, yes, I do. I want to take you
- 8:14Speaker 7: out very much.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Well, how about it?
- 8:16Speaker 7: All right, come on. If you don't have to hurry home,
- 8:21Speaker 7: we might see some in New York.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Huh? Oh, that'll be grand.
- 8:25Speaker 4: Did you call, sir?
- 8:26Speaker 2: No, don't bother, Charlie. We're leaving. I'm going out to
- 8:29Speaker 2: see New York. Good night.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Good night.
- 8:32Speaker 7: Now, there's a novelty.
- 8:33Speaker 4: See New York. Hey, Charlie, did he go?
- 8:35Speaker 13: Huh?
- 8:36Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, he went.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Oh, boy. Oh, boy.
- 8:39Speaker 15: Did I give him the runaround?
- 8:41Speaker 4: Boy, will he be sore. Boy, did we get rid
- 8:44Speaker 4: of him. Say, where's Francie? Oh, boy, did we get
- 8:47Speaker 4: rid of him. But Francie went with him.
- 8:50Speaker 9: Oh, boy.
- 8:51Speaker 14: Huh?
- 8:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:53Speaker 4: He's showing in New York. Oh, boy.
- 8:56Speaker 7: Oh, boy.
- 9:05Speaker 4: And there's big broad streets in Old Sharon with shade trees.
- 9:08Speaker 7: And flower gardens and great big roomy old houses with
- 9:12Speaker 7: ivy crawling up the.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Sides of the walls.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Oh, it sounds swell.
- 9:16Speaker 4: And it's so quiet, too.
- 9:18Speaker 13: What?
- 9:19Speaker 4: I said it's quiet in Old Sharon. Oh, I'd like that. Say,
- 9:23Speaker 4: if you're tired walking, we could go for a bus ride.
- 9:26Speaker 9: Yes.
- 9:27Speaker 6: Yes, I've always wanted to live in a nice, quiet place.
- 9:30Speaker 4: No, no, I asked if you wanted to take a
- 9:32Speaker 4: bus ride.
- 9:33Speaker 7: What?
- 9:34Speaker 2: A bus ride.
- 9:35Speaker 4: A bus ride.
- 9:46Speaker 7: So, you see, it's quite a wonderful place. Fascinating.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Old Sharon?
- 9:50Speaker 7: Yes, I can't imagine a finer place to live.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Sounds faintly like a picture of heaven, the way you
- 9:55Speaker 2: tell it.
- 9:57Speaker 7: Oh, look.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Did I miss it? something?
- 10:01Speaker 7: Oh, now, that's an inspiration, isn't it?
- 10:03Speaker 2: What is?
- 10:04Speaker 7: Those buildings. It's one of the greatest universities in the
- 10:06Speaker 7: country right there. You don't say. Wonderful, isn't it? Just
- 10:09Speaker 7: to see it, it gives you a kind of a lift,
- 10:12Speaker 7: doesn't it?
- 10:13Speaker 2: Well, I don't believe I ever noticed. Say, what are you?
- 10:17Speaker 7: Well, I'm a professor... Well, not quite. I'm an associate
- 10:22Speaker 7: professor in biology. My grandfather was president of Old Sharon University.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Oh, good.
- 10:27Speaker 7: My father's president now. Someday I'm going to be.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Say, that's really something, isn't it?
- 10:45Speaker 7: They look dead because they don't get enough nourishment and
- 10:47Speaker 7: because of noxious gases which destroy the chemical balance of
- 10:50Speaker 7: the soil. Some botanist friends of mine are working on
- 10:52Speaker 7: a tree that will thrive in the city atmosphere.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Well, if they ever find one that'll live on carbon monoxide,
- 10:56Speaker 2: I guess they've got something.
- 10:57Speaker 7: Yeah. You know, I'm afraid I haven't talked in a
- 11:03Speaker 7: great deal, have I?
- 11:04Speaker 2: Well, yes, you do talk a lot, but I like it.
- 11:07Speaker 7: I assure you, I've never talked this much before. I
- 11:10Speaker 7: just realized I'm trying to make an impression.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Well, you could let me say something. I'd like to
- 11:15Speaker 2: make an impression, too.
- 11:16Speaker 7: Oh, well, you don't have to say anything.
- 11:19Speaker 5: No?
- 11:19Speaker 7: No, you speak for yourself and very eloquently, too.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 11:24Speaker 7: Oh, say, it's late, isn't it? I guess I missed
- 11:27Speaker 7: my train.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Oh, that's too bad.
- 11:29Speaker 7: Oh, it's all right. There's another one tonight. I'll just
- 11:30Speaker 7: get hold of Keith and make sure we're on it.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Well, goodbye.
- 11:35Speaker 7: Goodbye? Why?
- 11:36Speaker 2: I live here.
- 11:37Speaker 13: Oh.
- 11:38Speaker 5: Oh.
- 11:40Speaker 7: Well, it certainly has been wonderful.
- 11:45Speaker 2: I don't know when I've had such a good time
- 11:46Speaker 2: seeing New York.
- 11:49Speaker 7: Oh, you know, I never thought seeing New York wasn't
- 11:54Speaker 7: much of a thrill for you.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Oh, but it was. Really, it was.
- 11:58Speaker 7: Look, it's my turn now. Is there anything the matter
- 12:01Speaker 7: with me? No.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Nothing at all. Bye.
- 12:07Speaker 7: Bye.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Wait.
- 12:08Speaker 7: Yes? Tell me, do you think things out carefully?
- 12:12Speaker 16: Things?
- 12:14Speaker 2: You mean small things or important things?
- 12:17Speaker 7: Everything.
- 12:18Speaker 13: Well, if they're small things, I never do. But if
- 12:22Speaker 13: they're important things, well, I never do either.
- 12:26Speaker 7: Well, I think you ought to think them out, don't you?
- 12:29Speaker 7: Because lots of times small things develop into very important things.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Yes, but if you think things out, they happen anyhow.
- 12:36Speaker 7: You mean there are some things you can't control, huh?
- 12:39Speaker 2: I don't think you can control anything.
- 12:42Speaker 7: Well, that's the way I feel. Say, did you kiss me?
- 12:51Speaker 2: Well, I thought you kissed me.
- 12:53Speaker 7: Well, this is silly, isn't it? This is.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Very silly.
- 12:58Speaker 7: But I don't mind. Do you?
- 13:01Speaker 2: No. Do you?
- 13:03Speaker 14: No.
- 13:04Speaker 7: Do you?
- 13:05Speaker 13: No.
- 13:15Speaker 7: Now, listen, Porter, he has brown hair, blue eyes, about
- 13:17Speaker 7: six feet tall, and his name is Keith Beston. I
- 13:19Speaker 7: ain't seen him, boss. Well, will you look for him?
- 13:21Speaker 7: He can.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Uh, wait, wait, wait, wait. Never mind.
- 13:23Speaker 7: There he is, right over there. Keith.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Keith, Keith.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Now, come on.
- 13:26Speaker 9: Wake up.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Wake up. Who is it? Oh, Peter.
- 13:30Speaker 14: Hi.
- 13:31Speaker 7: Keith, listen, the most wonderful thing has happened. Some people
- 13:33Speaker 7: would say it's a miracle.
- 13:34Speaker 4: And so?
- 13:34Speaker 7: But there's nothing particularly miraculous about it, Keith. It's just
- 13:36Speaker 7: a matter of chemistry. You see, anodes attract cathodes.
- 13:39Speaker 4: How cozy.
- 13:40Speaker 7: When we saw each other, our chemicals began to work.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:42Speaker 7: Finally, I came to the conclusion that she's the most
- 13:43Speaker 7: wonderful girl in the world. So, Keith.
- 13:45Speaker 4: I know, I know. Don't tell me you're in love.
- 13:48Speaker 7: Oh, no, no. I'm married.
- 13:50Speaker 4: Married to cathode? Cathode. What a funny name for a girl.
- 13:54Speaker 7: Her name is Francie.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Oh, Francie. Francie's a very pretty name.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Francie.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Hey, hey, that's my girl.
- 14:02Speaker 7: I've got to go now, Keith. I'll see you in
- 14:03Speaker 7: the morning.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Hey, hey, wait.
- 14:06Speaker 13: Wait.
- 14:08Speaker 8: Peter.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Peter, here I am.
- 14:10Speaker 7: Oh, oh, oh.
- 14:12Speaker 2: What are you trying to do, lose her?
- 14:14Speaker 7: Oh, no. I'm never going to lose you.
- 14:16Speaker 2: You better not. It only took a day to happen, but... Oh,
- 14:19Speaker 2: I'm in love with you for always. Think you can
- 14:21Speaker 2: stand it?
- 14:22Speaker 7: I'll try.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Peter, what did Keith say?
- 14:24Speaker 7: Oh, Ellie's a little startled at finding he's married.
- 14:26Speaker 2: So am I.
- 14:27Speaker 7: Tell me, did you get a drawing room?
- 14:28Speaker 2: Oh, I had a terrible time. There was only one
- 14:30Speaker 2: left on the whole train.
- 14:31Speaker 7: But you got it.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Right here. Drawing room A.
- 14:34Speaker 7: Oh, well, let's go in.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Wait, Peter. Yeah? Peter, I've never been married before.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Frightened?
- 14:41Speaker 2: Frightened. No.
- 14:43Speaker 13: As a matter of fact, I'm never going to be
- 14:45Speaker 13: frightened again now that I have you. You're my wall
- 14:47Speaker 13: to lean again.
- 14:48Speaker 7: Well, I've always tried to be a strong man. Uh,
- 14:51Speaker 7: in a... Conservative sort of way.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Well, my big, strong, and conservative man, you can get
- 14:56Speaker 2: your shoulders ready and carry me across our first threshold.
- 14:59Speaker 7: Oh, no, no, Francie. That's what people did a thousand
- 15:03Speaker 7: years ago. That's old stuff.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Oh, please.
- 15:05Speaker 7: Oh, all right, darling, all right.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Oh, Pico. Oh, Peter.
- 15:11Speaker 9: Step right in, folks. We love visitors.
- 15:13Speaker 6: Can't you knock before you come busting in on people?
- 15:16Speaker 7: Well, I beg your pardon.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Peter, Peter, put me down.
- 15:18Speaker 9: All right, buddy, I know just how it is.
- 15:20Speaker 8: Yeah, well, just how is it?
- 15:21Speaker 4: Will you keep quiet? Can't a man make a mistake?
- 15:24Speaker 2: Wait a minute. Isn't this drawing room A, car 71?
- 15:26Speaker 6: Yes, this is drawing room A, car 71, and.
- 15:29Speaker 4: There's our ticket.
- 15:30Speaker 7: Why, it's the same as ours.
- 15:31Speaker 9: So what?
- 15:32Speaker 13: Well, Elmer, what are you going to do about this traffic?
- 15:34Speaker 2: Throw them out.
- 15:35Speaker 4: Will you shut up?
- 15:36Speaker 9: Can't you see they're going?
- 15:37Speaker 7: Look, we just got married.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I don't know why it is.
- 15:39Speaker 6: Every time I go on a trip with you, something
- 15:41Speaker 6: always happens.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Is that so?
- 15:42Speaker 2: Listen. Yes, that's so.
- 15:44Speaker 10: Now, look, dear, why can't you be a nice baby
- 15:46Speaker 10: and keep quiet before.
- 15:47Speaker 4: I pin your big ears back? Oh, excuse me.
- 15:50Speaker 17: You heard him.
- 15:51Speaker 2: You're witnessing.
- 15:51Speaker 4: I wish you had a mother to go back to.
- 15:53Speaker 8: I wish I had another husband to go back to.
- 15:55Speaker 4: All right, all right.
- 15:56Speaker 9: Get one at the next station.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Oh, I'll bet when you two grow up, you're going
- 15:59Speaker 2: to be a couple of nasty people. Come on, Peter,
- 16:02Speaker 2: let's go.
- 16:04Speaker 7: Well, that's that.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Well, we could go sit in the observation car.
- 16:10Speaker 7: Yeah, I guess we could. Come on, darling. Oh, Sharon.
- 16:18Speaker 8: Oh, Sharon, Nick.
- 16:26Speaker 7: Come on, we're here, Francie. Hurry.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Oh, I know. Oh, Peter. Yes? Peter, what is it
- 16:33Speaker 2: a professor's wife has to do? I forgot to ask
- 16:35Speaker 2: you yesterday.
- 16:36Speaker 7: Well, mostly just keep the professor happy, that's all. Oh,
- 16:40Speaker 7: you're going to like old Sharon, Fancy. And you'll like
- 16:42Speaker 7: my family, too. Oh, and they're going to love you.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Oh, I hope so. Never having had a family of
- 16:47Speaker 2: my own, I sort of have an illusion about one. Morning, Peter.
- 16:51Speaker 7: Oh, good morning, Keith.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Hello, Keith.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Why, Francie, what are you doing here?
- 16:54Speaker 2: Well, I just thought of.
- 16:55Speaker 4: Oh, I remember. I married you last night. Darling, kiss me.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Wait a minute.
- 16:59Speaker 7: I married her.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Well, that's all right. Then we're cousins. I can kiss
- 17:03Speaker 4: my own cousin, can't I?
- 17:04Speaker 7: Uh, come on, come on, Francie.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Oh, there's your family, Pete. Yeah. Hey, the old man
- 17:09Speaker 4: looks kind of calm.
- 17:10Speaker 18: I thought he'd be pretty excited when he heard you
- 17:12Speaker 18: were married.
- 17:12Speaker 7: Well, I haven't told him yet.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Oh, you haven't told him yet? No. And save me
- 17:16Speaker 4: two good seats on the 50-yard line.
- 17:17Speaker 12: Well, I didn't want to tell him over the phone.
- 17:20Speaker 12: You know how excited Father gets over the phone. Why
- 17:22Speaker 12: limit him to the phone? He'd throw a fit anyplace.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Say, it sounds like I sort of walked into something.
- 17:27Speaker 18: Right up to your beautiful neck, lady. Peter's father is
- 17:30Speaker 18: Henry VIII of Old Sharon. He cuts the heads off.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Of our young brides.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Oh, yeah?
- 17:34Speaker 7: Oh, now, wait a minute, Keith. I'm old enough to
- 17:36Speaker 7: know what I'm doing. I thought this thing out very carefully,
- 17:38Speaker 7: and if Dad has anything to say, let him say
- 17:40Speaker 7: it to my face.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Oh, don't worry.
- 17:41Speaker 9: He will.
- 17:42Speaker 4: He will.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Look, maybe I'd better go someplace and wait until you've
- 17:45Speaker 2: had a chance to straighten things out.
- 17:46Speaker 4: Well, uh, you can come to my place. It's a
- 17:49Speaker 4: lovely place.
- 17:50Speaker 13: Oh, no.
- 17:50Speaker 14: Oh, no.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Maybe I'd better, Peter. Then you can tell them how
- 17:53Speaker 2: wonderful I am, and then I'll come over later.
- 17:56Speaker 4: No, no. I, uh.
- 17:58Speaker 7: Oh, I don't... I don't like this.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Uh.
- 18:02Speaker 7: All right.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Goodbye, Peter.
- 18:03Speaker 9: Goodbye, Peter.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Goodbye. What do you mean, goodbye? I'll see you in
- 18:05Speaker 4: just a few minutes. I'll carry your bag, Cousin Francie.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Wait a minute. Who is that over there?
- 18:11Speaker 4: Peter's father.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Well, I figured that, but who's the girl?
- 18:15Speaker 4: Oh, her. Her name's Helen. Just a girl Peter's engaged to.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Engaged? Why, he's the bickermas.
- 18:21Speaker 18: Only in the second degree. She's something the old man
- 18:24Speaker 18: whipped up. You know, blue blood and a black tongue.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Thoroughbred.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Come on. No, no, wait a minute. I want to
- 18:31Speaker 2: give her the one silver.
- 18:32Speaker 7: Sure, sure.
- 18:36Speaker 4: But, Dad, listen. Don't tell me.
- 18:38Speaker 9: I can see with my own eyes. I sent you
- 18:40Speaker 9: to New York to bring Keith home.
- 18:41Speaker 7: Yes, well, I brought him, Dad.
- 18:43Speaker 9: I didn't expect you to be weak enough to allow
- 18:45Speaker 9: him to bring that blonde with him.
- 18:47Speaker 17: Isn't that the girl you spoke to me about over
- 18:50Speaker 17: the phone?
- 18:50Speaker 7: Yes, that's the girl. But that was before.
- 18:55Speaker 17: She's a nice girl, Dad. Peter, you're 26 years old.
- 18:59Speaker 17: When you were 12, I informed you. And you still
- 19:01Speaker 17: don't know one woman from another. This is a subject
- 19:04Speaker 17: that doesn't bear discussing now. You may use the car
- 19:06Speaker 17: and take Helen home. I have a board meeting at
- 19:08Speaker 17: the university.
- 19:09Speaker 4: But, Dad, this is... Wait, wait, Dad.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Come on, Peter.
- 19:11Speaker 11: I know it wasn't your fault.
- 19:13Speaker 7: Uh, what do you mean, Helen?
- 19:14Speaker 11: Well, Keith is allergic to blondes. Every time he gets
- 19:17Speaker 11: near one, he breaks out.
- 19:18Speaker 2: In a race.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Oh, yeah?
- 19:19Speaker 11: I didn't want to tell you this before, but his
- 19:21Speaker 11: best friends.
- 19:22Speaker 7: Say that Say what? Go on.
- 19:25Speaker 11: Oh, never mind, dear. Why should you worry about it?
- 19:27Speaker 7: Well, I do, in a way. Oh, Mr.
- 19:29Speaker 18: Morgan.
- 19:29Speaker 11: Now, what's she coming over here for?
- 19:32Speaker 4: Oh, Mr.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Morgan, I want to thank you for everything you've done.
- 19:35Speaker 7: Listen, I... I had such.
- 19:37Speaker 2: A wonderful time in New York. Every time I think
- 19:40Speaker 2: of it, I break out in goose flesh all over.
- 19:42Speaker 4: Ah, nice.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Do you ever break out in goose flesh? Well, not lately.
- 19:46Speaker 7: Francie, listen.
- 19:46Speaker 4: I'll always think of you, Mr.
- 19:48Speaker 13: Morgan, as my cousin, and I suppose it's all right
- 19:50Speaker 13: for cousins.
- 19:51Speaker 2: To kiss goodbye, isn't it? There. Goodbye, Mr. Morgan. Well,
- 19:59Speaker 2: that was very pretty.
- 20:00Speaker 7: Helen, that girl is.
- 20:03Speaker 2: It's all right, darling.
- 20:04Speaker 11: We'll just consider her.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Your wild oats.
- 20:06Speaker 7: But, Helen... I might say right now I.
- 20:08Speaker 11: Don't think I care for her. Well, come along, Peter.
- 20:12Speaker 4: Well, Cousin Francie, ready?
- 20:15Speaker 2: I'm ready. You know something, Keith?
- 20:18Speaker 17: What?
- 20:19Speaker 2: I have a feeling, just a sneaky little feeling, that
- 20:23Speaker 2: someday I'm going to punch my husband's fiancé right on
- 20:27Speaker 2: the nose.
- 20:44Speaker 3: The curtain falls on Act One of Vivacious Ladies, starring
- 20:47Speaker 3: Alice Faye and Don Amici. Mr. DeMille presents Act Two
- 20:50Speaker 3: in just a moment. You know, there's an old saying
- 20:54Speaker 3: that good things go in threes. Well, here are three
- 20:57Speaker 3: good words that are growing more and more popular with
- 21:00Speaker 3: women every day.
- 21:01Speaker 7: New, quick, luxe.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Growing so popular that new, quick, luxe is now America's
- 21:06Speaker 3: favorite way of caring for nice things by a vote
- 21:10Speaker 3: of two to one. Yes, all over the country. It's
- 21:13Speaker 3: two to one for luxe flakes. Twice as many women
- 21:16Speaker 3: use luxe for stockings, under things, other nice things, too,
- 21:20Speaker 3: as use any other flakes, chips, or beads.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Well, no wonder, Mr.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Ruick.
- 21:25Speaker 2: There are three very good reasons why new quick luxe
- 21:28Speaker 2: is so popular.
- 21:29Speaker 3: First, new quick luxe is so fast, it bubbles into
- 21:33Speaker 3: suds at the touch of water. Why, in water as
- 21:36Speaker 3: cool as your hand, it dissolves three times as fast
- 21:39Speaker 3: as any of ten other leading soaps tested. Second, here's
- 21:44Speaker 3: the second reason women like New Quick Luxe. It goes further,
- 21:48Speaker 3: gives you more subs ounce for ounce, even in hard water,
- 21:52Speaker 3: than any of those other soaps. Third, third comes the
- 21:56Speaker 3: reason you all know, Luxe purity. New Quick Luxe flakes
- 22:01Speaker 3: are gentle and safe, have no harmful alkali. They're safe
- 22:05Speaker 3: for anything safe in water. Speed, thrift, and safety. New
- 22:11Speaker 3: Quick Flux gives you all three. Ask your dealer for
- 22:15Speaker 3: a big box tomorrow. It comes in the same familiar
- 22:18Speaker 3: package at no extra cost to you. And now, our producer, Mr.
- 22:23Speaker 7: DeMille.
- 22:24Speaker 5: Act Two of Vivacious Lady. Starring Donna Michie as Peter
- 22:27Speaker 5: and Alice Faye as Francie. It's later the same morning.
- 22:35Speaker 5: Peter Morgan, Jr. has arrived at home determined to break
- 22:38Speaker 5: the news of his marriage. In the living room, he
- 22:41Speaker 5: faces Peter Morgan, Sr. Peter Morgan, Jr. takes a deep
- 22:45Speaker 5: breath and plunges in.
- 22:48Speaker 7: Now, Dad, I want to tell you something.
- 22:50Speaker 17: Oh, by the way, Peter, the student council meets this afternoon.
- 22:53Speaker 17: As a member of the advisory committee, you're going to be.
- 22:56Speaker 9: There, of course.
- 22:57Speaker 7: All right.
- 22:58Speaker 4: Now, Dad.
- 22:58Speaker 9: Oh, yes, another thing that I wanted to speak to
- 23:00Speaker 9: you about. We're having the.
- 23:03Speaker 17: usual spring difficulties between our, uh, male and female students
- 23:08Speaker 17: a little early this season.
- 23:09Speaker 2: What?
- 23:10Speaker 9: There's entirely too much necking. There's entirely too much, uh,
- 23:13Speaker 9: fraternizing in the locker room.
- 23:15Speaker 7: Uh, all right, I'll take care of it. Now, Dad,
- 23:17Speaker 7: I want to explain to you about that girl at
- 23:18Speaker 7: the station.
- 23:19Speaker 17: Peter, I'm sure you'll be happy to know I've decided
- 23:21Speaker 17: to give it no more thought, as far as you're concerned.
- 23:24Speaker 7: Yes, but, Dad, you don't quite understand. The subject is closed. Oh, no, no,
- 23:27Speaker 7: the subject is not closed. It can't be closed.
- 23:29Speaker 9: Really? This whole matter is distasteful.
- 23:31Speaker 7: Well, at the risk of proving myself a bore, I
- 23:33Speaker 7: insist on talking about it.
- 23:34Speaker 9: And I insist that you respect my wishes.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Father, Peter, your voice is.
- 23:38Speaker 7: I'm sorry, Mother.
- 23:39Speaker 16: Is there anything the matter, dear?
- 23:40Speaker 4: Well, um.
- 23:41Speaker 17: Peter insists on talking about a thoroughly distasteful subject.
- 23:44Speaker 7: Well, it isn't distasteful to me, and I will not
- 23:46Speaker 7: be treated like an infant.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Don't shout!
- 23:48Speaker 9: Shouting is the effort of a limited mind to express itself.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Oh, my heart.
- 23:52Speaker 7: Oh, Mother, I'm sorry.
- 23:53Speaker 9: Quick, quick, get her to the sofa. Quickly now.
- 23:57Speaker 7: Now.
- 23:58Speaker 14: Now.
- 23:59Speaker 9: Now, see what you've done.
- 24:00Speaker 7: I'm sorry.
- 24:01Speaker 4: I didn't mean.
- 24:02Speaker 7: Get the smelling salts.
- 24:03Speaker 9: Get the smelling salts, I tell you. You know your
- 24:05Speaker 9: mother can't stand excitement.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Mother, mother.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Oh, I'm all right, dear.
- 24:09Speaker 7: Are you sure? I'm so sorry.
- 24:11Speaker 4: Mother, but.
- 24:12Speaker 7: But sooner or later, Dad.
- 24:13Speaker 4: Be quiet.
- 24:14Speaker 9: Haven't you caused enough damage?
- 24:15Speaker 7: All right, Dad. All right.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Hello?
- 24:31Speaker 14: Hello, darling.
- 24:32Speaker 4: This is Peter.
- 24:33Speaker 9: Oh, Peter.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Is it all settled? Have you told the folks?
- 24:36Speaker 4: Well, no, not yet.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Oh, Peter.
- 24:40Speaker 4: But look, I have an idea.
- 24:42Speaker 14: I want you to get all dressed up, as beautiful
- 24:44Speaker 14: as you are, and get Keith to take you to
- 24:46Speaker 14: the prom tonight.
- 24:47Speaker 4: My folks will be there.
- 24:48Speaker 2: All right, darling. I'll be even more beautiful than I am.
- 24:51Speaker 4: Is that my dear cousin Peter?
- 24:53Speaker 2: Keith, he wants you to take me to the prom tonight.
- 24:55Speaker 4: Hello? The prom? Give me that phone. Hey, Peter, why
- 24:59Speaker 4: bore Francie her first night here?
- 25:00Speaker 14: Now, now, Keith, listen to me. I want her to
- 25:03Speaker 14: meet the folks while I tell them. It'll be much
- 25:06Speaker 14: easier with all the music and atmosphere and everything. And
- 25:10Speaker 14: they're sure to love her.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Well, so far, everybody in the family who's met her
- 25:13Speaker 4: loves her.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Yes.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Now, Keith, you take good care of her, will you?
- 25:17Speaker 4: Don't worry, I will. We'll meet you in the locker room.
- 25:19Speaker 4: All right, thanks. No, no, you stay out of that
- 25:21Speaker 4: locker room!
- 25:30Speaker 2: Peter, you mean you still haven't told.
- 25:33Speaker 7: Oh, now, now, don't worry. Everything is going to be
- 25:35Speaker 7: explained tonight, just as soon as Mother and Dad get here.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Oh, do you think I'll like them? I mean, I mean,
- 25:41Speaker 2: do you think they'll like me?
- 25:42Speaker 7: Oh, nothing like you ever happened to the Morgans before.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Oh, darling.
- 25:47Speaker 7: Oh, Francie.
- 25:49Speaker 4: Break it up, break it up. The locker rooms are
- 25:50Speaker 4: over that way.
- 25:51Speaker 7: Oh, Keith, now listen.
- 25:52Speaker 4: You listen. Your fiancée is on her way over here.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Oh, Peter, I've been meaning to talk to you about her.
- 25:57Speaker 7: Not now, darling, not now, please.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Peter, where did you disappear to? Oh, hello, Helen.
- 26:03Speaker 7: Where have you been?
- 26:03Speaker 2: I'm checking your hat.
- 26:05Speaker 7: Oh, checking my hat, yes, yes. Helen, I want you
- 26:08Speaker 7: to meet Miss.
- 26:10Speaker 4: Uh, Miss, uh, Francie Brent.
- 26:12Speaker 2: How do you do? Oh, yes, I recognize you by
- 26:15Speaker 2: your goose flesh.
- 26:17Speaker 13: Oh, yes, it is nice having something that makes you
- 26:19Speaker 13: stand out from the crowd.
- 26:21Speaker 11: Your platonic friendships are becoming a little irksome, Keith.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Come, sweet.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll, uh, I'll be right back.
- 26:27Speaker 7: Excuse me, Miss Brent.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Come, sweet. Who does she think she is? Well, mow
- 26:33Speaker 2: her down.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Here, here, take it easy.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Look at them dancing. If she gets any closer to him,
- 26:38Speaker 2: she'll be behind him. I can't stand it another second.
- 26:41Speaker 2: I'm going to mow her down.
- 26:42Speaker 4: No, no. Come here.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Look at me. Look at me. I'm shaking all over.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Get outside. I'll cut in on Peter and send him
- 26:49Speaker 4: out to you.
- 26:50Speaker 12: Now, go on.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Go on.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Oh, I don't mean to be foolish, but the way
- 27:04Speaker 2: you were holding her.
- 27:05Speaker 7: Oh, now, darling, please.
- 27:07Speaker 4: She was holding me.
- 27:08Speaker 7: Peter....
- 27:10Speaker 13: Peter, would I be too much of a bore if
- 27:13Speaker 13: I suggested that you break off your engagement to that girl?
- 27:15Speaker 7: Francie, dear, the engagement is broken. She doesn't know anything
- 27:18Speaker 7: about it yet, but I just want to take one
- 27:20Speaker 7: thing at a time.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Well, you don't have to bite my head off about it.
- 27:24Speaker 7: Oh, gosh, sweetheart, here we are quarreling in public and
- 27:28Speaker 7: nobody even knows we're married.
- 27:30Speaker 2: That's just it, darling. We can't even quarrel in public
- 27:34Speaker 2: because you won't tell them we're married.
- 27:35Speaker 7: Well, on the other hand, if we want to quarrel
- 27:37Speaker 7: in public, why shouldn't we quarrel in public?
- 27:39Speaker 2: All married people quarrel. That's one of the nice things
- 27:42Speaker 2: about being married.
- 27:45Speaker 7: Oh, Francie.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Oh, darling.
- 27:49Speaker 7: All right. Now, you stay right here. I'm going to
- 27:51Speaker 7: tell them. And, Francie, I'm sorry I upset you.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Oh, no, I'm not upset about that. It's just that
- 27:59Speaker 2: I've got the shakes.
- 28:01Speaker 7: Why, darling, you are shaking. Well, there's nothing to be
- 28:07Speaker 7: afraid of there. They're just my mother and father. They'll understand.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Well, then why are you shaking?
- 28:16Speaker 7: Oh, sympathetic action. Now, hold your head up high and
- 28:21Speaker 7: then count to 100.
- 28:22Speaker 2: What for?
- 28:22Speaker 7: That'll calm you down and give you courage. All right.
- 28:25Speaker 7: Go on, hold it up. It's up. All right, now,
- 28:27Speaker 7: just stay like that. I'll be right back.
- 28:29Speaker 2: All right, one, two, three, four, five, six, Seven?
- 28:36Speaker 11: I wouldn't try that in a high wind. You might
- 28:38Speaker 11: take off.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Oh, very funny. I bet you thought that up yourself.
- 28:44Speaker 11: I wonder if you could stand the shock of my
- 28:46Speaker 11: saying that I dislike you intensely.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Look at me. I'm brooding. Now will you go away?
- 28:52Speaker 11: Not before I've had a few words with you. Peter
- 28:54Speaker 11: and I are planning to be married.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Oh, is that so?
- 28:57Speaker 11: Not that I think knowing that would make any difference
- 29:00Speaker 11: to you.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Well, no.
- 29:02Speaker 11: You see, Peter needs protection against a certain type of woman.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Well, I could work on that.
- 29:07Speaker 11: Are you going to mind your own business, or must
- 29:09Speaker 11: I really give you a piece of my mind?
- 29:10Speaker 2: Oh, I couldn't take the last piece. You, you little... Now, now,
- 29:15Speaker 2: what are you going to do that for? I only
- 29:17Speaker 2: have to hit you right back. You contemptible little blonde.
- 29:20Speaker 11: Who do you think you are hitting me?
- 29:22Speaker 7: Ow!
- 29:23Speaker 2: Now keep quiet. You can't do that to me. Well,
- 29:25Speaker 2: how dare you? Listen, listen, I don't want to fight. Well,
- 29:27Speaker 2: I do.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Take that.
- 29:28Speaker 14: All right.
- 29:28Speaker 4: All right.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Put them out.
- 29:29Speaker 8: I'll tear your eyes out.
- 29:31Speaker 2: You want to fight, huh? You want to fight.
- 29:33Speaker 6: I'll show you, you cheap little glutton.
- 29:35Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 29:35Speaker 7: All right.
- 29:36Speaker 2: I'll tear your hair off.
- 29:37Speaker 13: Oh.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Dad.
- 29:41Speaker 7: You've got to come outside with me.
- 29:42Speaker 9: What is this, Peter?
- 29:43Speaker 7: Well, it's somebody. I want you to meet it. It's
- 29:46Speaker 7: a surprise, Dad. I've sent Keith for Mother. I want
- 29:49Speaker 7: you both to be right there.
- 29:50Speaker 9: Well, it better be good.
- 29:51Speaker 4: Oh, Dad, this is good. Right out here.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Oh, kick me in the face, will you?
- 29:57Speaker 9: Francie, Helen!
- 29:57Speaker 4: Kill her, I'll kill her! Get off my head, I'll
- 30:00Speaker 4: tell you when! Francie!
- 30:01Speaker 9: Well, it is good, Peter, but don't you think it's
- 30:03Speaker 9: a little rough?
- 30:04Speaker 4: Francie, Helen, stop! Francie, this is my father!
- 30:07Speaker 2: He fouled me with a pin! Francie, here I am, here. Oh, Peter.
- 30:20Speaker 7: Listen, I'm running to a class.
- 30:21Speaker 4: Are you all right?
- 30:22Speaker 7: Did Helen hurt you much?
- 30:23Speaker 2: No, not much, but I was so frightened last night
- 30:25Speaker 2: when I saw your father, I just ran.
- 30:26Speaker 7: Oh, I worried about you all night. You know, for
- 30:28Speaker 7: a man of Dad's intelligence, he was pretty primitive about
- 30:30Speaker 7: the whole thing. He insisted on remaining upset. So I
- 30:33Speaker 7: just didn't tell him anything.
- 30:35Speaker 2: I hope I haven't ruined everything for you.
- 30:37Speaker 7: Oh, now try not to worry too much about it.
- 30:40Speaker 7: Just remember, bad beginning, good finish.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Well, I must be due for a load of happiness.
- 30:44Speaker 7: Oh, sure, darling, both of us.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Well, I'll run along. Oh, Keith said, will you hurry
- 30:48Speaker 2: up and settle everything so he could have his apartment back?
- 30:51Speaker 2: He stayed over at the dorms last night and he
- 30:53Speaker 2: says the beds are lumpy.
- 30:54Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, we've been posing Keith long enough. Uh, look, uh,
- 30:58Speaker 7: you get yourself an apartment over at the Martha Gregory and, uh,
- 31:00Speaker 7: I'll see you later.
- 31:01Speaker 2: All right, Keith.
- 31:01Speaker 8: Oh, Professor Morgan.
- 31:03Speaker 15: Who's that?
- 31:03Speaker 7: It's one of my students. Careful, careful. Uh, yes, Miss Wright.
- 31:06Speaker 8: I just wanted to tell you I finished that paper.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Would you like to read it, Professor?
- 31:09Speaker 7: I'll see you in class, Miss Wright.
- 31:11Speaker 8: Okie dokie.
- 31:12Speaker 7: Uh, Miss Brent, if you have any further questions, I'll
- 31:14Speaker 7: be glad to answer them later.
- 31:16Speaker 8: Good morning, Professor.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Thank you, Professor.
- 31:19Speaker 8: He's cute, isn't he?
- 31:20Speaker 2: Woo-woo!
- 31:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 31:22Speaker 7: Woo-woo!
- 31:31Speaker 15: Martha Gregory Apartments. I'll see if she's in.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Evening. Just a moment, sir.
- 31:37Speaker 15: Where do you think you're going?
- 31:38Speaker 7: Upstairs, Miss Francie Brent.
- 31:39Speaker 15: I beg your pardon, but this hotel is for ladies exclusively.
- 31:43Speaker 7: I know. That's why I sent her here.
- 31:44Speaker 15: I'm sorry, but you'll have to remain in the lobby.
- 31:46Speaker 7: Look, I'm her botany professor. See? Books.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Books.
- 31:49Speaker 15: Read the sign, please. During evening hours, gentlemen will visit
- 31:52Speaker 15: guests only in the lobby. Absolutely no exceptions.
- 31:55Speaker 9: All right.
- 31:55Speaker 4: All right. Will you call her up and tell her
- 31:56Speaker 4: I'm down here?
- 31:57Speaker 2: Yes, I will.
- 31:59Speaker 7: Thanks. I suppose it's all right with you if we
- 32:01Speaker 7: go out for a ride in my car?
- 32:03Speaker 12: Oh, yes, sir.
- 32:03Speaker 15: I recommend River Road, sir.
- 32:04Speaker 4: It's a very quiet thing. Oh, shut up.
- 32:12Speaker 7: Josh, Francine. Do you realize this is the first time
- 32:15Speaker 7: we've been alone since we were married?
- 32:17Speaker 2: Oh, darling. When I'm alone with you, I get the
- 32:20Speaker 2: same sensation I got when I rode on a roller
- 32:22Speaker 2: coaster for the first time.
- 32:23Speaker 7: Sinking or up in the clouds?
- 32:25Speaker 2: Way up in the clouds.
- 32:27Speaker 7: Oh, Francie, I love you so much.
- 32:30Speaker 2: And I love you. Oh, it's funny. We have to
- 32:33Speaker 2: go and park somewhere to say that.
- 32:35Speaker 7: Yeah. Anybody think I wasn't your husband? Including me.
- 32:39Speaker 2: If ever a girl fell unmarried, I'd do. Peter... You
- 32:44Speaker 2: think your father might be cooled off enough now so
- 32:46Speaker 2: that we could tell him?
- 32:46Speaker 7: Hot or cool, we're going to tell him tonight. He's
- 32:49Speaker 7: over at the university now. He's got to make a
- 32:50Speaker 7: speech tonight.
- 32:51Speaker 13: Well, I'd better wait outside. It's just my luck to
- 32:53Speaker 13: sneeze and kill his point.
- 32:55Speaker 9: Okay, okay.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Turn on those lights.
- 32:57Speaker 7: What?
- 32:58Speaker 2: Peter, it's a cop.
- 32:59Speaker 4: Evening, folks.
- 33:01Speaker 7: Nice evening, isn't it? Uh, yes. Yeah. Officer, we were studying.
- 33:08Speaker 14: Yeah?
- 33:09Speaker 7: Studying what?
- 33:10Speaker 2: Botany. I'm in his class.
- 33:12Speaker 7: Yes, class 207.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 33:14Speaker 13: You see, you see, I'm a backward student, and he's
- 33:18Speaker 13: been coaching me. I'll prove it to you. I'll show
- 33:21Speaker 13: you the book.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Here.
- 33:23Speaker 7: Uh-huh.
- 33:25Speaker 4: Well, this is a new wrinkle. All the comforts are home.
- 33:28Speaker 7: Now, now, wait a minute, officer. Just a second.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Oh, Peter. Peter, we can tell him.
- 33:31Speaker 4: Yes.
- 33:32Speaker 7: Officer, I haven't been able to tell this to anybody
- 33:34Speaker 7: else before, but I'm going to tell you. We're married.
- 33:37Speaker 2: What? Yes. We're married.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Now I've heard everything.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Get out of here before I run you in.
- 33:53Speaker 9: And all for what? For nothing. For applause. What is
- 33:57Speaker 9: applause to him or he to applause that he should
- 34:00Speaker 9: weep for him?
- 34:01Speaker 7: Dad, will you sit down for a minute?
- 34:03Speaker 9: Now, now, Peter, I've got to rehearse my speech.
- 34:04Speaker 7: But I have something I want to tell you.
- 34:06Speaker 9: Mr. Noble is endowing us with a new library. I
- 34:08Speaker 9: want you to be there, Peter.
- 34:09Speaker 7: Well, it just happens that this is much more important
- 34:11Speaker 7: to me than Mr.
- 34:12Speaker 9: Noble.
- 34:12Speaker 17: At the moment, your problems are secondary.
- 34:15Speaker 4: What is he to applause or applause to him?
- 34:17Speaker 7: Dad, do you know that girl that you think is
- 34:19Speaker 7: Keith's girl? What is he to applause or applause?
- 34:22Speaker 9: Well, she isn't.
- 34:22Speaker 4: She is my wife. What is he to applause.
- 34:26Speaker 2: What?
- 34:27Speaker 9: What was that you said?
- 34:28Speaker 7: I said that that girl is my wife. And, Dad,
- 34:32Speaker 7: I might add that she's the finest wife any man
- 34:35Speaker 7: could ever hope to have. Peter.
- 34:37Speaker 9: Are you mad?
- 34:37Speaker 7: I think I am, sir, and I hope it's a
- 34:39Speaker 7: permanent condition. I won't allow you to toss your life away. Well,
- 34:41Speaker 7: it's my life, and I wish you'd let me do
- 34:43Speaker 7: with it as I please. After all, it's a courtesy
- 34:45Speaker 7: you must concede to any ordinary human being.
- 34:46Speaker 17: Aren't you confusing courtesy and license?
- 34:48Speaker 4: Now, just a minute, Dad.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Father, Father, are you all right? What happened?
- 34:52Speaker 9: I'm all right. It's this boy.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Oh, I was so frightened.
- 34:54Speaker 7: Father, I'm glad you're here.
- 34:55Speaker 9: You be quiet. You know your mother has a weak heart.
- 34:57Speaker 7: Quiet? I've been quiet long enough.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Oh, my heart.
- 35:01Speaker 4: There, she's fainted. Go get some water. Mother, I'm sorry.
- 35:04Speaker 5: Father.
- 35:05Speaker 9: Are you all right, dear?
- 35:07Speaker 4: I'm all right.
- 35:09Speaker 9: Here, give it to me. You'll kill your mother.
- 35:11Speaker 4: Dad, this is something.
- 35:12Speaker 13: Quiet.
- 35:13Speaker 17: Until we can discuss this further, I wish you wouldn't
- 35:15Speaker 17: say anything about it to her.
- 35:16Speaker 4: All right, Dad.
- 35:17Speaker 7: Okay. So, you see, Francie, I couldn't say a word. Oh,
- 35:33Speaker 7: I see. We've always had to be very careful, Mother.
- 35:35Speaker 7: We never could do anything unexpected. Not that marrying a
- 35:39Speaker 7: woman is unexpected, but.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sorry about you, Mother Peter.
- 35:42Speaker 4: Really, I am.
- 35:43Speaker 2: But why should I be a shark?
- 35:45Speaker 7: Oh, you wouldn't be, darling.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Well, can't you break it to her gently?
- 35:49Speaker 7: Oh, I tried, but Dad was yelling, so I... Francie,
- 35:55Speaker 7: I'm awfully sorry.
- 35:57Speaker 2: So am I, Peter. Well, here's my prism.
- 36:02Speaker 4: The Martha Gregory. Why did I ever think of this
- 36:05Speaker 4: as a solution?
- 36:06Speaker 2: Peter, listen. Ever since I came here, I've been ducking corners,
- 36:11Speaker 2: sneaking around, hiding places. And if loving you means ducking
- 36:15Speaker 2: and sneaking somewhere, I'm willing to do it.
- 36:19Speaker 7: I don't want you to do it.
- 36:20Speaker 2: But it just seems that even that isn't enough. Don't
- 36:23Speaker 2: you think I ought to go back to New York?
- 36:25Speaker 2: I could get my job back.
- 36:27Speaker 7: Now, don't you ever say that again. That's my first
- 36:30Speaker 7: order as head of this family. Peter. Peter.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Kiss me. Goodbye, Peter.
- 36:39Speaker 7: I'll see you in the... Uh, you mean goodnight, don't you?
- 36:44Speaker 2: I meant what I said. Bye, darling.
- 36:46Speaker 7: Francie, wait.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Wait.
- 36:48Speaker 4: Francie. Francie, wait. After a short intermission, Mr.
- 36:59Speaker 3: DeMille returns with Alice Faye and Donna Meachie for Act
- 37:02Speaker 3: Three of Vivacious Ladies. Tonight we have some news for you.
- 37:06Speaker 3: News about an outstanding fashion event that's coming your way soon.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Here's Libby Collins, our fashion reporter, to tell you all
- 37:12Speaker 3: about it.
- 37:12Speaker 2: It's big news, Mr.
- 37:13Speaker 1: Roig.
- 37:14Speaker 19: We want to announce the 1941 edition of Luxible Fashions
- 37:17Speaker 19: on Parade. This is a unique style show of the
- 37:20Speaker 19: newest fashions for spring, which will be presented in 125
- 37:24Speaker 19: leading department stores during the next few months. Let me
- 37:27Speaker 19: tell you a bit about this exciting fashion event. In
- 37:29Speaker 19: the show, living models present a whole wardrobe of charming
- 37:33Speaker 19: new spring and summer fashions designed for American living.
- 37:36Speaker 2: And here's good news.
- 37:37Speaker 19: You can make all these clothes yourself at ever so
- 37:39Speaker 19: tiny a cost. Each dress is cut from a pattern
- 37:42Speaker 19: you can buy anywhere.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Easy to follow.
- 37:45Speaker 19: And more good news. Every one of the smart new
- 37:48Speaker 19: fabrics used is luxable. That means next to nothing in upkeep.
- 37:52Speaker 7: I imagine husbands will like that kind of a fashion show, Libby.
- 37:54Speaker 4: Yes.
- 37:55Speaker 19: And they'll like having their wives and daughters pointed out
- 37:58Speaker 19: as the best-dressed women in town because these clothes are
- 38:00Speaker 19: beautifully designed and the fabrics are lovely. You'll find fashion-right
- 38:04Speaker 19: clothes for every kind of activity, for these clothes are
- 38:07Speaker 19: planned for the many-sided life of.
- 38:09Speaker 2: Today's American woman.
- 38:10Speaker 19: Fashions for the homemaker, the clubwoman, the career girl, for
- 38:14Speaker 19: sports and for play, for daytime and evening. I think
- 38:18Speaker 19: you'll be excited at the new American feeling in the
- 38:20Speaker 19: colors and fabrics, too. You know, we're going to American
- 38:23Speaker 19: sources for our inspiration this year, Luxible fashions on parade
- 38:26Speaker 19: will bring you many of these new ideas. And since
- 38:29Speaker 19: being American means being practical, no wonder these lovely fabrics
- 38:33Speaker 19: are so easy to care for. All they need is
- 38:36Speaker 19: a bath in gentle, new, quick lux.
- 38:38Speaker 7: You know, leading stores everywhere advise lux, Libby.
- 38:41Speaker 4: Yes, indeed.
- 38:42Speaker 19: Stores all the way from New York to San Francisco.
- 38:44Speaker 19: And makers of nice.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Fabrics advise lux, too.
- 38:47Speaker 3: Of course, because they know that it's safe for anything
- 38:50Speaker 3: safe in water. Silks, woolens, rayons, colorful cottons. Watch the
- 38:54Speaker 3: papers in your city for Luxible Fashions on Parade. It
- 38:58Speaker 3: will tour 125 cities during the next few months. You
- 39:01Speaker 3: won't want to miss it. We pause now for station identification.
- 39:06Speaker 3: This is the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 39:10Speaker 4: The Curtain.
- 39:27Speaker 5: The curtain rises on the third act of Vivacious Lady.
- 39:37Speaker 5: Locked out from his lawful wife by the rules of
- 39:39Speaker 5: the Martha Gregory apartment, Peter decides to go upstairs anyway,
- 39:43Speaker 5: via the fire escape. He's just outside Francie's partly open window...
- 39:48Speaker 5: And he hears her talking on the phone.
- 39:51Speaker 2: Hello. Did you get that ticket? Yes. Yes, the one
- 39:55Speaker 2: I am for New York. And please send somebody up
- 39:57Speaker 2: for my bags. I'm leaving. Thank you.
- 40:02Speaker 4: Oh, Peter.
- 40:03Speaker 7: Francie, I know you ought to be angry with me
- 40:04Speaker 7: and leave, but please don't go.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Oh, I'm not angry, but I.
- 40:07Speaker 7: Well, you ought to be. I know that if you
- 40:08Speaker 7: were me and I were you, I'd be angry and
- 40:10Speaker 7: leave you, but don't leave me.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Oh, darling, please don't. It's darn difficult as it is.
- 40:16Speaker 13: Now, go on back down the fire escape before somebody
- 40:18Speaker 13: finds out you're here.
- 40:19Speaker 7: France, if you don't stop this, I'm going right out
- 40:21Speaker 7: in the hall and yell at the top of my
- 40:21Speaker 7: lungs and let everybody know I'm here. I've got a
- 40:23Speaker 7: right to be here. Now, come on. Let's talk this
- 40:26Speaker 7: thing over.
- 40:27Speaker 2: No, no, no. I've made up my mind.
- 40:29Speaker 7: But what about our mind? We're not supposed to have
- 40:31Speaker 7: separate minds.
- 40:32Speaker 13: Darling, I married you and I was so proud. And
- 40:36Speaker 13: I'm still proud of it. But I wanted you to
- 40:38Speaker 13: be proud of me, too. Well, don't you see?
- 40:41Speaker 2: It's not working out. Why don't you let me go
- 40:44Speaker 2: for a while anyway? It's all my fault.
- 40:47Speaker 7: Oh, no, it isn't.
- 40:49Speaker 2: I started off on the wrong foot. So far, I
- 40:51Speaker 2: have a perfect score for hurting everyone.
- 40:53Speaker 7: Well, if you go, I'm going with you.
- 40:54Speaker 4: No.
- 40:55Speaker 2: I think too much of a mother to do that,
- 40:57Speaker 2: even if you don't think enough of her not to. See?
- 41:00Speaker 2: There I go, hurting you again.
- 41:02Speaker 7: Oh, it's all right.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Peter, I wish we hadn't started out like this. It
- 41:07Speaker 2: has done so quickly.
- 41:08Speaker 7: Well, I'd do it again.
- 41:09Speaker 2: I guess I would, too. And even then, I'd have
- 41:13Speaker 2: to do what I'm doing now. Don't you see?
- 41:15Speaker 13: It can't work out as long as I stay and
- 41:18Speaker 13: explode a bomb every time I make a move. So
- 41:21Speaker 13: I'll go, and then maybe things can straighten themselves out,
- 41:24Speaker 13: and then maybe... Well, oh, Peter, do I make any sense?
- 41:29Speaker 7: Yeah, unfortunately, I guess you do. Just the same I'm
- 41:32Speaker 7: going to tell Mother. I'm going to tell her tonight.
- 41:34Speaker 7: I'll break it gently. She's got to know sometime.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Oh, goodbye, darling. I've got to pack.
- 41:40Speaker 7: Uh, Francie, couldn't I just Sit down and watch you
- 41:44Speaker 7: while you leave. I promise I won't say anything or argue.
- 41:47Speaker 7: I'll just sit here.
- 41:47Speaker 2: All right. Darling, please give me goodbye. We try to
- 41:56Speaker 2: be alone and can't. Now that we are alone, we
- 42:01Speaker 2: have to say goodbye.
- 42:03Speaker 7: But do we have to, darling?
- 42:06Speaker 2: You know we do.
- 42:08Speaker 7: Yes.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Goodbye, darling. Will you write me?
- 42:13Speaker 4: Every day.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Please make it twice a day.
- 42:17Speaker 7: Three times a day.
- 42:18Speaker 2: What will you say?
- 42:20Speaker 7: Well, I'll say, dear Francie... No, no, no.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Make it stronger.
- 42:26Speaker 7: Francie, darling.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Yes, dear?
- 42:29Speaker 7: Francie, darling, I'm miserable without you.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Three times a day?
- 42:33Speaker 7: Three times a day.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Goodbye, darling.
- 42:38Speaker 7: Goodbye.
- 42:39Speaker 16: Oh, darling.
- 42:42Speaker 2: I can't go. Don't let me go, Peter. Don't let
- 42:46Speaker 2: me go.
- 42:46Speaker 7: Now you're talking sense.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Who's there? The clerk.
- 42:50Speaker 15: I got your tickets for New York.
- 42:51Speaker 9: Your train leaves.
- 42:52Speaker 4: In 15 minutes. Well, never mind.
- 42:53Speaker 7: She's not going. You can take those tickets back.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Peter. Who's that in there with you?
- 42:56Speaker 7: What have I done?
- 42:58Speaker 2: Who is it?
- 42:58Speaker 4: Francie.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Oh, go out the window, quick. I'll see you tomorrow.
- 43:02Speaker 4: Open this door.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Goodbye, darling.
- 43:04Speaker 4: Goodbye.
- 43:04Speaker 7: Goodbye.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Miss Brent, you know this is against the rules.
- 43:07Speaker 17: Open the door.
- 43:09Speaker 4: Well?
- 43:10Speaker 2: Where is he? Where is he? What he? What do
- 43:15Speaker 2: you mean, he?
- 43:16Speaker 15: Why, what's the matter with you?
- 43:18Speaker 2: I have a cold and it makes me hoarse.
- 43:20Speaker 15: Oh, oh. Well, now you take some hot tea, lemon, molasses,
- 43:23Speaker 15: honey and butter and put them all together.
- 43:25Speaker 2: And it spells mother. Now get out of here.
- 43:26Speaker 13: Well.
- 43:28Speaker 16: Mrs.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Morgan. Yes, Gertrude?
- 43:34Speaker 8: There's a Miss Brent to see you, Mrs. Morgan.
- 43:36Speaker 13: Miss Brent.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Ask her to come in.
- 43:38Speaker 6: This way, please.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Thank you. Good morning.
- 43:42Speaker 9: Good morning.
- 43:43Speaker 15: Won't you sit down?
- 43:44Speaker 2: Thank you, Mrs.
- 43:45Speaker 14: Morgan.
- 43:46Speaker 2: Peter told me he was going to speak to you
- 43:47Speaker 2: last night.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Yes.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Oh, then you know. Oh, Mother, I'm so glad.
- 43:53Speaker 13: We've been so worried about telling you, and I was
- 43:56Speaker 13: so scared I'd lose him. I know it sounds silly
- 43:58Speaker 13: to fall in love with somebody so quickly, but I
- 44:00Speaker 13: just took one look at him, and I said, oh,
- 44:02Speaker 13: I said, that's the man. He's wonderful and intelligent, too.
- 44:06Speaker 13: I think that's why I married him.
- 44:09Speaker 16: You married him?
- 44:12Speaker 2: Well, yes. Didn't Peter tell you?
- 44:15Speaker 16: I haven't seen Peter since yesterday morning.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Oh, Mrs.
- 44:20Speaker 17: Morgan.
- 44:20Speaker 16: I think I'd better sit down.
- 44:22Speaker 2: Oh, Mrs. Morgan, I wouldn't have done this to you
- 44:24Speaker 2: for the world. Oh, you're hot. Would you like a
- 44:27Speaker 2: glass of water? I mean, do you feel all right?
- 44:30Speaker 2: You know, I think I'm going to feel fine.
- 44:32Speaker 9: May I have a cigarette?
- 44:34Speaker 2: Oh, but you're hot.
- 44:35Speaker 14: Oh, nonsense.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Peter told me you had heart trouble.
- 44:39Speaker 16: Oh, well, maybe I do have heart trouble when it's convenient.
- 44:42Speaker 16: Whenever my husband raises his voice, it saves so much
- 44:45Speaker 16: wear and tear.
- 44:47Speaker 4: Morning, Aunt Martha. I just came in to... Oh, excuse me.
- 44:51Speaker 4: I'm late for school.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Come back, Keith. It's all right, Keith. Mrs. Morgan knows everything.
- 44:56Speaker 4: Oh, yeah? How do you feel, Auntie?
- 45:00Speaker 2: I feel wonderful.
- 45:02Speaker 4: Fancy, dear.
- 45:03Speaker 16: I don't mean to be one of those inquiring relatives,
- 45:05Speaker 16: but tell me, did you do before you.
- 45:07Speaker 13: Married peter i worked in the club velasquez a club
- 45:12Speaker 13: a nightclub well yes.
- 45:14Speaker 4: Uh you see how wonderful wonderful.
- 45:16Speaker 16: Tell me fancy what's the lakonga like huh the dance
- 45:20Speaker 16: the lakonga i read so much about it in all
- 45:23Speaker 16: the columns did they ever do the lakonga in your
- 45:25Speaker 16: clubs Yes.
- 45:26Speaker 4: Sure.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Oh, it must be delightful.
- 45:29Speaker 6: I'd get anything to do the La Conga just once.
- 45:31Speaker 4: Uh, Francie, why don't you show Auntie how it goes?
- 45:34Speaker 2: Oh, I couldn't, Keith. Would you, dear?
- 45:36Speaker 4: Sure she would. I'll give her the piano. Go ahead, Francie.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Well, well, the first step is you take two steps
- 45:42Speaker 2: to the left, then you kick your foot out, and then.
- 45:45Speaker 4: And then you go, uh.
- 45:47Speaker 2: Uh, that's right. It's a... Well, you see, it's a bump.
- 45:52Speaker 2: A bump?
- 45:53Speaker 9: Oh, how nice!
- 45:55Speaker 2: One, two, three. Is that it?
- 45:58Speaker 14: That's it.
- 45:58Speaker 9: All together now.
- 45:59Speaker 3: One, two, three.
- 46:00Speaker 15: One, two, three.
- 46:05Speaker 4: Three, uh. One, two, three, uh. One, two, three, uh.
- 46:12Speaker 2: That's it.
- 46:13Speaker 4: You're doing strange.
- 46:14Speaker 9: Why, it's fun.
- 46:15Speaker 2: One, two, three, uh.
- 46:18Speaker 4: I had a girl. What's a girl? Oh, mother. Mother,
- 46:22Speaker 4: it's Mr.
- 46:22Speaker 2: Morgan.
- 46:24Speaker 16: One, two.
- 46:25Speaker 14: Oh, my heart.
- 46:28Speaker 4: My heart. The stranger turned his face to the wall
- 46:31Speaker 4: and died.
- 46:32Speaker 17: Well, just one surprise after another, isn't it?
- 46:34Speaker 2: Mr. Morgan, there'll be no more surprises. You came in
- 46:38Speaker 2: just as we were celebrating Mother knowing about Peter and me.
- 46:40Speaker 17: Mother, how very domestic. I think you'd better sit down,
- 46:44Speaker 17: my dear. You look like a very practical young lady.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Well, I'm practical enough to see that you don't approve
- 46:49Speaker 2: of me.
- 46:49Speaker 9: Did you expect to be approved of?
- 46:50Speaker 2: Why shouldn't I be approved of?
- 46:52Speaker 9: Well, a girl from a nightclub... Oh, Peter, you're impossibly narrow.
- 46:55Speaker 9: I ask you not to interrupt. Tell me, why did
- 46:57Speaker 9: you marry my son?
- 46:59Speaker 2: I love him, and I want to be his wife.
- 47:01Speaker 17: Miss Brent, do you know what it means to be
- 47:02Speaker 17: the wife of a university professor?
- 47:04Speaker 2: No, but I'm getting an idea.
- 47:05Speaker 17: Then you must realize your talents run under different directs.
- 47:08Speaker 2: Mr. Morgan, you don't know anything about me.
- 47:10Speaker 17: I know my son met you in a dance hall,
- 47:12Speaker 17: and before he had time to catch his breath, well,
- 47:14Speaker 17: to put it so you'll understand it, you hooked him.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Oh, I hooked him.
- 47:19Speaker 13: I hooked him for that very desirable but very underpaid
- 47:22Speaker 13: job of his, also his social positions.
- 47:24Speaker 2: I can't remember which. That's what you mean, isn't it? Exactly.
- 47:26Speaker 19: Exactly.
- 47:27Speaker 17: In marrying you, Peter is throwing away everything he's worked for,
- 47:29Speaker 17: and in the end, you'll be as unhappy as he'll be.
- 47:32Speaker 17: The simplest solution of an unfortunate situation like this is.
- 47:35Speaker 9: A quiet divorce.
- 47:35Speaker 4: Mr.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Morgan, you're not grading papers or dismissing classes. He's my husband.
- 47:39Speaker 9: Very well.
- 47:39Speaker 17: If you insist on being unreasonable, I shall be obliged
- 47:42Speaker 17: to ask Peter for his resignation.
- 47:43Speaker 2: Oh, no. No, you can't do that.
- 47:45Speaker 4: Peter, you.
- 47:46Speaker 9: That's enough, Martha. Come along now. I must be off
- 47:48Speaker 9: to the university. Come on.
- 47:49Speaker 2: Come on.
- 47:50Speaker 9: Come on.
- 47:50Speaker 15: Come here.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Go there.
- 47:52Speaker 16: Thirty years I've had of it. All for old Sharon,
- 47:54Speaker 16: for Alma Mater. Laugh when you want to cry, and
- 47:57Speaker 16: if you want to laugh, don't laugh too loudly. Alma mater,
- 48:00Speaker 16: your sons and daughters are true blue, and we love
- 48:03Speaker 16: you through and through. Even though you break my son's heart,
- 48:07Speaker 16: I'm still supposed to love you through and through. Well,
- 48:09Speaker 16: you can have your alma mater, and here is one
- 48:11Speaker 16: of her daughters that isn't true blue and won't love her.
- 48:14Speaker 4: Through and through anymore.
- 48:15Speaker 9: Are you coming, my dear? Coming?
- 48:17Speaker 15: I'm going.
- 48:18Speaker 2: And I'm going too, Mr.
- 48:19Speaker 3: Morgan.
- 48:19Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 48:27Speaker 7: Now, class, we come to leptosporangiate. Lepto, delicate, spora, seed, angiate, case,
- 48:32Speaker 7: or vessel. Is that quite clear now?
- 48:33Speaker 8: Professor Morgan.
- 48:34Speaker 4: Yes?
- 48:35Speaker 8: I still don't understand. In ferns, which matures first, the
- 48:38Speaker 8: male or the female?
- 48:39Speaker 9: Excuse me? Excuse me? Hey, Pete.
- 48:42Speaker 4: Keith, what are you doing here in this condition? Drowning
- 48:45Speaker 4: your sorrow.
- 48:45Speaker 7: Listen, this is my class.
- 48:47Speaker 4: Yes? Will you get out of here, Dad, showing Mr.
- 48:51Speaker 4: Noble around the school with his million dollars?
- 48:53Speaker 7: He'll be here any minute.
- 48:53Speaker 2: Professor! Yes?
- 48:55Speaker 4: What's the idea, Keith? This is the first time you've ever.
- 48:57Speaker 7: Done this to me.
- 48:57Speaker 4: This is the first time your wife's ever left you.
- 48:59Speaker 4: What did you say?
- 49:00Speaker 8: I said, which matures first, the male or the female?
- 49:04Speaker 4: I said your wife's leaving you on the four o'clock train.
- 49:06Speaker 7: Just a minute. But she can't.
- 49:07Speaker 4: She is, and your mother's going with her.
- 49:09Speaker 7: Let's get out of here.
- 49:09Speaker 4: I've got to talk to you.
- 49:10Speaker 7: Professor!
- 49:11Speaker 2: What?
- 49:11Speaker 3: What?
- 49:11Speaker 7: Come on, come on, Keith.
- 49:12Speaker 4: Come on down to that locker room. I've got another
- 49:14Speaker 4: bottle there.
- 49:14Speaker 8: Well, which is it, Professor? The male or the female?
- 49:17Speaker 4: I'll answer your question just as soon as I return. Culpepper,
- 49:18Speaker 4: take this class.
- 49:19Speaker 14: Okay.
- 49:20Speaker 4: My own wife. I'll go after it's what I'll do.
- 49:29Speaker 9: You hear?
- 49:30Speaker 4: I'll go after it.
- 49:30Speaker 10: My boy, don't toss away everything you work for on
- 49:33Speaker 10: a girl who'll only succeed in blackening the good name
- 49:36Speaker 10: of Morgan.
- 49:37Speaker 4: Blackening the good name of Morgan? Well, that's fine.
- 49:39Speaker 12: As if I couldn't blacken my own name. When I
- 49:41Speaker 12: get through, he'll think Francie's too good for me.
- 49:44Speaker 4: Take it easy. Take it easy. I'll disgrace myself. That's
- 49:47Speaker 4: what I'll do. Oh, Peter, we're pals, aren't we?
- 49:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 49:50Speaker 4: I mean, I'd do anything for you. You'd do anything
- 49:52Speaker 4: for me.
- 49:53Speaker 7: Wouldn't you?
- 49:54Speaker 4: Absolutely. As long as it doesn't take after 4 o'clock.
- 49:57Speaker 4: All right. Then do me a little favor, will you?
- 50:00Speaker 4: Divorce Francie so she can marry me. Now, what do
- 50:03Speaker 4: you say?
- 50:03Speaker 14: No.
- 50:04Speaker 4: Absolutely no. Answer? No. Mr.
- 50:08Speaker 5: Morgan.
- 50:08Speaker 4: What?
- 50:09Speaker 2: Mr.
- 50:09Speaker 4: Morgan, your father's in class. He's got a man with him. Oh,
- 50:12Speaker 4: that's Mr.
- 50:13Speaker 8: Noble.
- 50:13Speaker 4: He wants to know where you are.
- 50:14Speaker 12: Will you tell him I shall be there directly?
- 50:17Speaker 4: Yes, sir. Are you going to class like this?
- 50:20Speaker 2: Sure.
- 50:20Speaker 4: Give me some more of that stuff. I'm going to
- 50:22Speaker 4: blacken up.
- 50:27Speaker 12: Well, class, come to order. Class is now open to discussion.
- 50:33Speaker 12: Are there any questions?
- 50:34Speaker 8: Professor.
- 50:35Speaker 4: Yes, my dear. Now, what would you like to know, hmm?
- 50:38Speaker 8: In turn, which matures first, the male or the female?
- 50:41Speaker 4: What difference does it make, silly? Are there any more
- 50:46Speaker 4: silly questions? Oh, now, come, come, come, come. Now, you
- 50:50Speaker 4: all must have just oodles and oodles of questions that
- 50:52Speaker 4: need answering. I know I have. I know Culpepper has.
- 50:56Speaker 4: Haven't you, Culpepper, hmm?
- 50:57Speaker 2: Now, come on.
- 50:58Speaker 4: Speak up, man. Speak up. Come on. Well, yes, I have. Say,
- 51:02Speaker 4: you come from Texas, don't you? Yes, I do. Bless her.
- 51:05Speaker 4: Bless her.
- 51:06Speaker 7: Yippee! Yippee!
- 51:08Speaker 4: That's dismissed.
- 51:10Speaker 9: Peter. Peter, I want to see you at once.
- 51:18Speaker 4: What are you trying to do? I, sir, am a blackguard.
- 51:20Speaker 4: How am I doing?
- 51:21Speaker 7: In front of your class.
- 51:22Speaker 4: It's unpardonable.
- 51:23Speaker 9: What explanation can we make of it?
- 51:25Speaker 12: Well, sir, I thought that if I could do a
- 51:26Speaker 12: good job of blackening the good old Morgan name, she
- 51:29Speaker 12: might fit right in.
- 51:30Speaker 9: So that's it, is it?
- 51:31Speaker 7: Yes, that is it, sir.
- 51:32Speaker 9: Which convinces me all the more that you don't know
- 51:34Speaker 9: what's good for you.
- 51:34Speaker 4: Well, that one of us must be wrong.
- 51:36Speaker 9: While you're a member of my faculty, you must do
- 51:38Speaker 9: as I say.
- 51:38Speaker 4: All right, then. Consider me no longer a member of
- 51:42Speaker 4: your faculty.
- 51:43Speaker 9: Oh, now, now, Peter, you don't have to resign.
- 51:45Speaker 4: Ah! Ah, a surprise, huh?
- 51:47Speaker 12: A surprise that any morgue would place anything above the
- 51:51Speaker 12: universe is not there.
- 51:51Speaker 4: You listen to me. I love it here.
- 51:53Speaker 12: There's nothing in this whole world I would rather be
- 51:56Speaker 12: than be a professor right here, except a good husband
- 51:58Speaker 12: to my wife.
- 51:59Speaker 4: What time is it? Oh, whoa. It's four o'clock and
- 52:04Speaker 4: I've missed that train.
- 52:04Speaker 9: I won't let you go, Peter. You're not responsible for
- 52:06Speaker 9: what you're saying.
- 52:07Speaker 4: I have no time to talk. I have to catch
- 52:09Speaker 4: the train because she's on.
- 52:10Speaker 9: Well, why do you care?
- 52:11Speaker 4: Yes, and Mother is on it, too.
- 52:13Speaker 9: What?
- 52:13Speaker 2: Come on.
- 52:14Speaker 4: Come on.
- 52:14Speaker 1: We.
- 52:16Speaker 4: Peter! Oh, I'm dizzy. But, Peter, you... Peter!
- 52:21Speaker 2: Will you have another sandwich, Mother? Yes, dear, thank you. Oh,
- 52:33Speaker 2: I'm as hungry as a wolf.
- 52:34Speaker 9: Me too.
- 52:35Speaker 2: I guess it must be this freedom. I feel so
- 52:37Speaker 2: free now. Yes, doesn't one feel free? Oh, New York
- 52:41Speaker 2: will be so much fun.
- 52:42Speaker 8: So many gay places.
- 52:44Speaker 2: We can go where we want to. And do what
- 52:46Speaker 2: we want to.
- 52:46Speaker 16: And wear what we want to without any husbands to
- 52:48Speaker 16: bother us.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Mother, you don't feel good about leaving? I know I
- 52:56Speaker 2: don't fancy it.
- 52:58Speaker 4: Neither do I.
- 52:59Speaker 2: But what was I to do? I had to go
- 53:01Speaker 2: through with it. Oh, it's all my fault. You were
- 53:04Speaker 2: married so long, and I had to come along and
- 53:06Speaker 2: cause all this trouble. Oh, don't worry about me. You've
- 53:09Speaker 2: got troubles of your own. It doesn't matter about Peter
- 53:11Speaker 2: and me. I hardly know him. Oh! Oh, my goodness! Porter!
- 53:17Speaker 12: Porter!
- 53:17Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am.
- 53:18Speaker 9: Everything's all right.
- 53:18Speaker 15: What is it?
- 53:19Speaker 9: What happened?
- 53:19Speaker 4: We hit a car.
- 53:20Speaker 2: Goodness! Anybody hurt? No, ma'am.
- 53:22Speaker 4: Nobody was in it.
- 53:23Speaker 2: Oh, thank heaven!
- 53:24Speaker 4: We'll be on our way just as soon as the
- 53:25Speaker 4: track is clear.
- 53:26Speaker 2: I'll say goodnight, Mother.
- 53:31Speaker 6: Come on, come on, get on the train, Dad.
- 53:35Speaker 4: Quick, quick.
- 53:35Speaker 17: Peter, I still don't see the necessity of placing the
- 53:38Speaker 17: car across the track and having it wrecked. There must
- 53:40Speaker 17: be a more sane and less expensive way of stopping
- 53:42Speaker 17: a train.
- 53:42Speaker 4: All right, all right, Dad.
- 53:44Speaker 7: Next time your wife leaves, I'll let you figure one
- 53:45Speaker 7: out for yourself.
- 53:46Speaker 9: Porter, Porter.
- 53:47Speaker 7: Yes, sir? We're looking for two ladies, one older and
- 53:49Speaker 7: one younger. The young one's a blonde, about five.
- 53:50Speaker 4: Compartment C, sir.
- 53:51Speaker 9: And the other one?
- 53:52Speaker 4: Compartment D, sir.
- 53:53Speaker 7: So long, Dad. See you.
- 53:57Speaker 4: In New York.
- 53:57Speaker 7: Oh. Oh, excuse me. I got.
- 53:59Speaker 2: Oh.
- 53:59Speaker 7: Francis.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Oh, Peter. How did you get here?
- 54:03Speaker 7: Well, you're going on a honeymoon, darling. And I couldn't
- 54:06Speaker 7: let you go alone. Honeymoon's kind of silly without a husband,
- 54:09Speaker 7: isn't it?
- 54:10Speaker 2: Oh, yes, Peter.
- 54:11Speaker 7: Which is our compartment?
- 54:13Speaker 2: That one there.
- 54:14Speaker 7: Oh, all right.
- 54:15Speaker 9: Up you go.
- 54:16Speaker 2: Oh, Peter. You're going to carry me across the threshold?
- 54:20Speaker 4: I'll say I am.
- 54:20Speaker 2: Come on. Oh, darling. In you go.
- 54:24Speaker 8: Well, a nice thing.
- 54:25Speaker 4: Can't you knock? Oh, Francie. Oh, Peter.
- 54:40Speaker 7: In just a moment, Mr.
- 54:41Speaker 3: DeMille returns with Donna Meachie and Alice Faye for their
- 54:43Speaker 3: curtain call. Now, while we wait, let's listen in on
- 54:47Speaker 3: a conversation in an attractive tea room.
- 54:49Speaker 4: Young Mr.
- 54:50Speaker 3: Jones has taken his wife out for a celebration. There's
- 54:52Speaker 3: a pause in their conversation, and then Mrs. Jones suddenly says.
- 54:56Speaker 6: Bill, why are you looking at that woman over there?
- 54:58Speaker 7: Oh, nothing, dear. It was just.
- 55:02Speaker 4: Well, I was admiring her hands. They're quite beautiful, don't
- 55:06Speaker 4: you think?
- 55:06Speaker 2: I dare say they are. But mine would be, too,
- 55:09Speaker 2: if I didn't wash dishes every day for you, Bill Jones.
- 55:12Speaker 3: And there's where we'd like to give young Mrs. Bill
- 55:14Speaker 3: Jones a hint. She could get compliments, plenty of them,
- 55:17Speaker 3: about her hands, in spite of dishwashing. The secret is simple.
- 55:22Speaker 3: Change from harsh soaps to new quick luxe flakes. It's
- 55:26Speaker 3: a mighty inexpensive beauty precaution, and one that millions of
- 55:29Speaker 3: wives have learned. New quick luxe has no harmful alkali
- 55:33Speaker 3: to dry out your skin. It leaves hands soft, white,
- 55:37Speaker 3: and lovely. That's been proved. In hundreds of scientific one-hand
- 55:41Speaker 3: tests of five soaps widely used for dishes, Lux was mildest,
- 55:45Speaker 3: kindest to hands. Why not get a thrifty big box
- 55:49Speaker 3: of new, quick Lux? Let it do your dishes in
- 55:52Speaker 3: a jiffy and help you keep hands lovely, too. It's fast, thrifty,
- 55:57Speaker 3: and it saves you from ugly red dishpan hands.
- 56:01Speaker 7: Now, here's Mr.
- 56:02Speaker 4: DeMille with our stars.
- 56:04Speaker 5: We left our college professor and a certain very lovely
- 56:06Speaker 5: blonde behind the Thadak curtains.
- 56:08Speaker 4: And now, presto.
- 56:09Speaker 5: We've got Donna Michie and Alice Fay right here.
- 56:11Speaker 7: At the microphone. Thanks, C.B. Certainly great to do a
- 56:14Speaker 7: show here in the Lux Radio Theater with Alice Fay.
- 56:17Speaker 2: I'll bet you tell that to all the girls, Don.
- 56:19Speaker 7: Now, that's gratitude for you, C.B. I say something nice,
- 56:21Speaker 7: what do I get?
- 56:22Speaker 2: Well, you see, Mr. DeMille, if you've ever worked with
- 56:24Speaker 2: a practical joker, you learn to be.
- 56:26Speaker 4: On your guard. Sounds as though you speak from experience, Alice.
- 56:29Speaker 2: Oh, that's an understatement. One time after we'd been shooting
- 56:32Speaker 2: all day, I went over to my dressing room on
- 56:34Speaker 2: the set to take a little rest. Don had beaten
- 56:36Speaker 2: me to it. The door was gone, the curtains missing,
- 56:39Speaker 2: the furniture scattered from one end of the stage.
- 56:41Speaker 4: To the other.
- 56:42Speaker 5: Alice, there's an old saying in Hollywood, scratch Don Amici
- 56:45Speaker 5: and you'll find a cat in your arm, my kid.
- 56:47Speaker 13: Oh, but he's such a nice boy that you have
- 56:50Speaker 13: to forgive him for those things.
- 56:51Speaker 7: Yeah, I'll tell you how Alice forgives, C.B. The next
- 56:53Speaker 7: day I went to my dressing room for lunch and
- 56:55Speaker 7: I found the door locked, and through the window I
- 56:56Speaker 7: could see Alice eating the last sandwich.
- 56:59Speaker 5: The other cat in your arm, my kid. I'm glad
- 57:04Speaker 5: you two didn't tell me all these things until now.
- 57:06Speaker 5: I didn't know in what dangerous company I'd been all week.
- 57:09Speaker 7: What kind of company have you got for next week, Stevie?
- 57:12Speaker 4: Very distinguished company, Don.
- 57:14Speaker 5: Next week, our star is Ronald Coleman, making his first
- 57:18Speaker 5: appearance here in almost two years. And with him, we'll
- 57:21Speaker 5: have Otto Kruger and Francis Robinson. The play is Libel,
- 57:26Speaker 5: a great hit on Broadway, and one of the most
- 57:28Speaker 5: exciting dramas of the courtroom the stage has ever produced.
- 57:32Speaker 5: you'll hear Ronald Coleman as a war veteran, faced with
- 57:35Speaker 5: the almost impossible task of proving, against the testimony of
- 57:39Speaker 5: his friends and even his wife, that he is himself.
- 57:43Speaker 4: It's a play off the beaten track.
- 57:45Speaker 5: And with Ronald Coleman in the lead, one that has
- 57:48Speaker 5: thrills for all of us next Monday night.
- 57:51Speaker 2: Well, I know that Ronald Coleman is a guarantee of
- 57:53Speaker 2: fine acting, so I'll be listening. Good night, Mr. DeMille.
- 57:56Speaker 15: Good night, darling.
- 57:57Speaker 4: So long, everybody.
- 57:58Speaker 7: Good night.
- 57:59Speaker 12: Good night.
- 58:01Speaker 5: We've got another play coming up with your names on it.
- 58:09Speaker 5: I know our audience will be pleased to learn that
- 58:12Speaker 5: again this year, the Lux Radio Theater has been selected
- 58:16Speaker 5: as the Outstanding Dramatic Program of the Year. This award
- 58:20Speaker 5: comes from two polls of the nation's radio editors and critics,
- 58:24Speaker 5: conducted annually by Motion Picture Daily and by Radio Daily.
- 58:28Speaker 5: So to you, our audience, whose support made these awards possible,
- 58:33Speaker 5: and to the radio editors who voted in both these polls,
- 58:37Speaker 5: I would like to express the gratitude and appreciation of
- 58:41Speaker 5: our clients and of all of us here in the
- 58:43Speaker 5: Lux Radio Theater. Our sponsors, the makers of Lux Flakes,
- 58:51Speaker 5: join me in inviting you to be with us again
- 58:53Speaker 5: next Monday night when the Lux Radio Theater presents Ronald Coleman...
- 58:58Speaker 5: In Libel, with Otto Kroger and Frances Robinson.
- 59:03Speaker 4: This is Cecil B.
- 59:04Speaker 5: DeMille saying good night to you from Hollywood.
- 59:15Speaker 3: Don Amici and Alice Faye will soon be seen together
- 59:17Speaker 3: in the 20th century Fox picture, Road to Rio. Alice
- 59:20Speaker 3: Faye's current picture is Tin Pan Alley, and Don Amici's
- 59:23Speaker 3: is Down Argentine Way, both for 20th Century Fox. The
- 59:27Speaker 3: picture Vivacious Ladies, was produced by RKO Studios, whose latest
- 59:31Speaker 3: hit is Kitty Foyle, starring Ginger Rogers. Heard in tonight's
- 59:35Speaker 3: play were Frederick Mackay as Keith, Lou Merrill as Mr. Morgan,
- 59:39Speaker 3: Verna Felton as Mrs. Morgan, Jane Drummond as Helen, Ralph
- 59:42Speaker 3: Sedan as Clerk, Betty Jean Haney as June, Sally Payne
- 59:46Speaker 3: as Hat Check Girl, and Arthur Q. Bryan, Celeste Rush,
- 59:49Speaker 3: Wally Mayer, Jack Carr, and Bob Burleson. Our music is
- 59:53Speaker 3: directed by Louis Silvers, and your announcer has been Melville Ruick.
