- 0:04I just stopped him from sleeping through it.
- 0:06Same thing, my brother said. From the outside.
- 0:12My Playful Wife. Episode 51. The South Again.
- 0:17Written by Mia. We flew south again in the spring,
- 0:23to the visit Mira had booked before we had left
- 0:26the last one, and the difference between this
- 0:28arrival and the one a year before was the whole
- 0:31quiet measure of the year. A year ago, Saloni
- 0:35had slept the entire flight, collapsed against
- 0:39the window. A woman who had to be unconscious
- 0:41for a while to survive her own exhaustion, carried
- 0:45south to be emptied and refilled. This time she
- 0:48did not sleep, and she was not empty, and she
- 0:52was not being carried to recover from anything.
- 0:54She came south this time whole, a woman who had,
- 0:58in the intervening year, been handed an empire
- 1:02and refused it, found the truest color of her
- 1:05life, taken on her first apprentice and taught
- 1:08her to hear, and stood in a quiet room and made
- 1:12a crowd of strangers go hush. She came as someone
- 1:15who knew, all the way down, exactly her own shape.
- 1:19And I watched her walk off the plane into her
- 1:22brother's city upright and rested and entirely
- 1:24herself, and I thought about the difference between
- 1:27the woman the South had received last spring
- 1:30and the woman it was receiving now, and the difference
- 1:33was a year of staying awake. There is no monument
- 1:37to a year spent staying awake. It produces nothing
- 1:41you can point to, no scar, no trophy, no single
- 1:44event you could name as the cause. It is the
- 1:47least dramatic of all the kinds of progress a
- 1:50person can make, and the easiest to miss, precisely
- 1:53because its whole substance is the accumulated
- 1:56weight of 10 ,000 small choosings, each one invisible,
- 2:00to look rather than to drift, to come back rather
- 2:04than to leave, to choose the true thing rather
- 2:07than the loud one. You cannot see a year of that
- 2:10while you are inside it. You can only see it
- 2:13the way I saw it now, in the changed posture
- 2:15of a woman walking off a plane, upright where
- 2:19she had once been folded, rested where she had
- 2:21once been emptied, whole where she had once arrived
- 2:25in pieces. My brother met us, and the meeting
- 2:31was easy now in a way that no longer even surprised
- 2:34me, which is its own marker of how far the thaw
- 2:38had carried us, that the once impossible ordinary
- 2:41hug had become simply ordinary, the miracle worn
- 2:45comfortable with use. But there was a new thing
- 2:48in how he looked at Celoni, and I caught it at
- 2:51the airport and watched it deepen across the
- 2:54visit, and it moved me more than I expected.
- 2:57because the story of the empire had reached the
- 3:00South. He had heard, everyone in the family had
- 3:03heard, the way families hear things, that his
- 3:06sister -in -law had been offered a fortune to
- 3:09become a great brand and had turned it down.
- 3:12And I watched my brother, across the days, look
- 3:15at Saloni with a new and particular respect,
- 3:18the respect of one person who has thought hard
- 3:21about the shape of a life for another who has,
- 3:24and arrived somewhere true. It landed differently
- 3:28coming from him, and it took me until the second
- 3:31evening to understand why. My brother is the
- 3:34one who, in the old frozen family story, had
- 3:38been the success, the one who got things, the
- 3:41one our parents held up, the one I spent a decade
- 3:44resenting from a careful distance. And he had,
- 3:47across his own quiet years, made a particular
- 3:50piece. He had built a modest, contented, deliberately
- 3:54ungrand life in the South, had chosen, in his
- 3:58own way, the right -shaped thing over the big
- 4:01thing, the warm, small, true life over the large,
- 4:05impressive one. He had done with a whole existence
- 4:08roughly what Saloni had done with a single offer.
- 4:12And so, when he looked at her now, it was not
- 4:15the admiration of a small person for a brave
- 4:18one. It was the recognition of one person who
- 4:21knows their own shape for another. Two people
- 4:24who had each, separately, refused the bigger
- 4:27thing for the truer one, seeing each other across
- 4:30a kitchen in the South and knowing exactly what
- 4:33the other had done. I had spent my childhood
- 4:36unable to see my brother as anything but my rival,
- 4:39and most of my adulthood unable to see him at
- 4:42all, and it was one of the stranger gifts of
- 4:45the awake years that I could now see him clearly
- 4:47enough to recognize that he had quietly been,
- 4:50all along, a kind of person I had only recently
- 4:54learned to admire. He had known something at
- 4:5630 that I did not learn until 45, that the big
- 5:00life is mostly a trap, that the small true one
- 5:03is the prize, that letting people misjudge your
- 5:05ambition is a price worth paying to keep your
- 5:08own shape. He had been living the lesson while
- 5:10I was still asleep. And now my wife had arrived
- 5:14at the same lesson by her own hard road, and
- 5:17the two of them sat in a southern kitchen as
- 5:19equals in a knowledge I was the junior member
- 5:22of, and I did not mind being the junior. I was
- 5:25just glad to finally be in the room. He said
- 5:31it to her on the second night, in his dry, undramatic
- 5:34way, while Mira and I pretended not to be listening
- 5:38and listened to every word. So you turned down
- 5:43the Empire, he said, not a question, handing
- 5:47her a cup of something. Good. I wondered if you
- 5:50would. I hoped you would, actually, though it
- 5:53wasn't mine to hope. People kept telling me about
- 5:56it like it was a tragedy. Your brilliant sister
- 5:59-in -law turned down a fortune. Such a shame.
- 6:02Such a waste. And I kept thinking, they don't
- 6:06understand the first thing about her. She didn't
- 6:09lose a fortune. She kept herself. He looked at
- 6:13her. The dry, gentle look. I did the same thing,
- 6:17you know. Smaller. Quieter. No one offered me
- 6:21an empire, but I had chances to chase the big
- 6:23version, and I kept choosing the small true one
- 6:26instead, and people thought I lacked ambition
- 6:29and I let them think it because explaining would
- 6:31have been worse than being misjudged. You and
- 6:35I are the same animal, Saloni. The ones who'd
- 6:39rather have the true small thing than the big
- 6:42empty one. It's a lonelier club than it should
- 6:45be. I'm glad you're in it. I'm glad my brother
- 6:49married into it. A pause, and then, drier still.
- 6:53God knows he needed someone in the club to drag
- 6:56him into it. He was the most ambitious of all
- 6:59of us once. Look at him now, at the edge of the
- 7:03room, perfectly happy, watching the rest of us.
- 7:07You fixed him. He fixed himself, Saloni said.
- 7:13I just stopped him from sleeping through it.
- 7:17Same thing, my brother said, from the outside.
- 7:24There was a four of us evening, of course, there
- 7:26is always a four of us evening. It is the whole
- 7:29point of a south, and it rhymed with the dinner
- 7:31of a year before, the one I have called in the
- 7:34notebooks, the night I understood what the striving
- 7:37is for. But it was a year deeper, and the deepening
- 7:41was the thing. A year before, the four of us
- 7:45dinner had been a marvel still slightly disbelieved.
- 7:49Two families newly braided, the easy affection
- 7:53still new enough to feel miraculous. This year,
- 7:56it was not a marvel. It was a habit. And the
- 8:00becoming a habit was not a loss of the wonder,
- 8:02but its fulfillment. The warmth that had felt
- 8:05astonishing a year ago had had a year to settle
- 8:08into the furniture, to become the ordinary baseline
- 8:11temperature of a family that simply, now, enjoys
- 8:15each other. We did not have to marvel at being
- 8:18able to sit together. We just sat together. Mira
- 8:22overfed everyone and pretended she hadn't. My
- 8:26brother did his dry commentary. Saloni was loose
- 8:29and funny in a way that a year ago she'd had
- 8:32to travel south to access and now seemed to carry
- 8:35with her everywhere. The unhooked is no longer
- 8:39a holiday from her life, but a permanent feature
- 8:41of it. And I sat at my edge of it and watched
- 8:44two healed couples be a year further into their
- 8:47healing and thought, this is what the Thursdays
- 8:51do, given enough of them. They accumulate into
- 8:54a life. The miracle becomes the baseline. And
- 8:58the baseline, the ordinary warm enjoyed each
- 9:00other baseline, is the actual prize the whole
- 9:03striving was always for. I have watched friends
- 9:06spend their whole lives chasing the marvel and
- 9:09missing the baseline, forever in pursuit of the
- 9:12next astonishing thing, the next peak, the next
- 9:15intensity. on the unexamined assumption that
- 9:18the good life is a sequence of highlights and
- 9:21the ordinary stretches between them are merely
- 9:24the waiting. They have it exactly backwards.
- 9:27The highlights are the waiting. The ordinary
- 9:31warm enjoyed each other baseline. The thing so
- 9:34unremarkable it is almost invisible is not the
- 9:37gap between the real things. It is the real thing.
- 9:40The only durable happiness there is. The one
- 9:44that does not require a marvel to sustain it
- 9:46because it has quietly become the weather of
- 9:49your life. Saloni and Mira talked late, the two
- 9:55of them, the night before we left, about Terra.
- 9:59I half heard it from the next room, the two women
- 10:02who had become sisters trading the thing women
- 10:05like them trade, which is the news of the people
- 10:08they are raising. Mira does not have apprentices.
- 10:11She has a way of holding a whole extended family
- 10:14together with tickets and phone calls and remembered
- 10:16birthdays, a different craft but the same instinct,
- 10:20the instinct to pour yourself, by hand, into
- 10:23the people around you, to be the warm organizing
- 10:26center or constellation of others' orbits. And
- 10:29Celonie was telling her about Terra, about the
- 10:32hands, the hunger. The nine days with the dull
- 10:36cloth, the offer from the man with the white
- 10:39teeth, and the way the girl had refused it with
- 10:42her own ear. And I heard Mira say, with the particular
- 10:45warmth she keeps for these things, so she's yours
- 10:49now. Properly. Whatever happens to her, part
- 10:53of her is going to be you, forever. You made
- 10:56a person, Saloni. Not the way I'd have guessed
- 10:59you would, but you made one. And I heard Celony
- 11:04go quiet, the good quiet, and then say, softly,
- 11:08I think I did. I think that's what the workshop
- 11:11is. I think that's what I'm for now. Not just
- 11:15the cloth. The makers. And the two of them sat
- 11:19with that. Two women in a southern kitchen who
- 11:22had each found their own way of putting themselves
- 11:25into the future, and I lay in the next room and
- 11:28felt the whole thing. The marriage. The brother,
- 11:32the apprentice, the strangers in the hushed room.
- 11:35All of it, as a single quiet true thing spreading
- 11:39outward in rings. The way a stone's ripple spreads
- 11:42from the one small place where, two years ago,
- 11:47a sleeping man had woken up on a balcony. I wrote
- 11:53about that in the fifth notebook, the last morning,
- 11:57in the brother's kitchen, in the southern light
- 11:59that is a cousin of our October light. That the
- 12:03awake years had not stayed inside the marriage.
- 12:06That was the thing I had not anticipated two
- 12:10years ago, when the only thing at stake seemed
- 12:13to be whether I could learn to see my own wife.
- 12:15I had thought it was a private project, a thing
- 12:18between Celonie and me. A marriage to be saved
- 12:22or lost. And it had turned out to be the start
- 12:25of something that kept spreading past us, because
- 12:28a marriage that wakes up does not stay a sealed
- 12:30room. It becomes a kind of source, a place the
- 12:34waking starts and then travels out from. The
- 12:37same truth that remade us had remade my relationship
- 12:40with my brother, who I now had back. It had been
- 12:44poured into Tara, who would carry it down a lineage
- 12:47of makers I would never meet. It had stood in
- 12:51a quiet room and gone into strangers. The balcony
- 12:54morning had cracked open one frightened sleeping
- 12:57man, and the crack had not stayed his. It had
- 13:01become a way of being that rippled out. Marriage
- 13:04to family to apprentice to stranger, each ring
- 13:07fainter and wider. The original true thing carried
- 13:11further from its source than the source could
- 13:13ever have imagined while it was still just two
- 13:16people learning to see each other over morning
- 13:18chai. I do not know how far the rings go. That
- 13:22is the strange, humbling thing about having become,
- 13:25without meaning to, a source. You cannot see
- 13:29past the second or third ring. You cannot follow
- 13:32the truth you handed to your apprentice into
- 13:34the hands she will hand it to, or trace the thing
- 13:38a stranger carried out of a quiet room into the
- 13:41life it changed. You only get to see the ripples
- 13:44nearest you. And to trust on no evidence, that
- 13:48they keep going past your sight, spreading and
- 13:51thinning into a future you will never witness,
- 13:53doing their quiet work in rooms you will never
- 13:56enter, long after the small original waking that
- 13:59started them has been forgotten by everyone,
- 14:02including the man it happened to. We flew home
- 14:08the next day, north. to our own light and our
- 14:11own table and the workshop where Tara would be
- 14:14waiting, and on the plane Selene put her head
- 14:17on my shoulder, awake this time, not collapsed,
- 14:20just resting, and said, I like who we are in
- 14:23the South. I like who we've become that the South
- 14:26gets to see. Last year I came here in pieces.
- 14:29This year I came here whole, and your brother
- 14:32saw it and called me the same animal as him,
- 14:34and I think that's the nicest thing anyone's
- 14:37said to me in a year. including the strangers
- 14:40who went quiet at the show. She was quiet a moment.
- 14:44We're going to keep doing this, aren't we? Coming
- 14:47south, growing older at that table with the four
- 14:51of us at it for the rest of our lives. Mira's
- 14:56already booked the next one, I said. She did
- 15:00it while you were saying goodbye. I watched her.
- 15:04Of course she did, Selenese said. and I felt
- 15:07her smile against my shoulder, and we flew north
- 15:10toward home, two people a year deeper into the
- 15:13awake life, the ring still spreading out behind
- 15:16us in the south, the whole quiet true thing still,
- 15:19against every prediction, getting larger by getting
- 15:23deeper, the only way it ever could. I wrote the
- 15:29last line in the notebook as we landed. The south
- 15:32behind us. The workshop and the apprentice and
- 15:36the long good awake life ahead. The south again.
- 15:40Flew down to the visit Mira booked before we
- 15:43left the last. A year ago, Saloni slept the whole
- 15:47flight. Carried south to be emptied and refilled.
- 15:51This year she came whole. Refused an empire.
- 15:55Found the truest color. Taught Tara to hear.
- 15:58Made a crowd go hush. She came as someone who
- 16:02knows exactly her own shape. The family sees
- 16:06it. The Empire story reached the South. My brother
- 16:10looks at her with a new particular respect. And
- 16:13it lands different from him because he's the
- 16:15one who in the old family story was the success.
- 16:19and who built his own modest, contented, ungrand
- 16:22life, chose the right -shaped thing over the
- 16:26big thing with a whole existence the way she
- 16:28did with one offer. He says it dry, you turned
- 16:31down the empire. Good. People called it a tragedy
- 16:35slash a waste, and they don't understand the
- 16:38first thing about her. She didn't lose a fortune.
- 16:41She kept herself. I did the same smaller slash
- 16:44quieter. Chose the small true thing and let people
- 16:48think I lacked ambition. You and I are the same
- 16:51animal. The ones who'd rather have the true small
- 16:55thing than the big empty one. A lonelier club
- 16:57than it should be. Glad you're in it. Glad my
- 17:01brother married into it. He was the most ambitious
- 17:04of. All of us once. Look at him now at the edge
- 17:08of the room, perfectly happy. You fixed him.
- 17:12Saloni. He fixed himself. I just stopped him
- 17:16sleeping through it. The 40FUS dinner rhymes
- 17:19with EP36, but a year deeper. A year ago, a marvel
- 17:24slightly disbelieved. Now a habit. The becoming
- 17:28a habit isn't a loss of the wonder, but it's
- 17:31fulfillment. The warmth had a year to settle
- 17:34into the furniture. The miracle becomes the baseline,
- 17:37and the baseline is the prize the striving was
- 17:40for. Saloni and Mira talk late about Terra. Two
- 17:45sisters trading, the news of the people they're
- 17:48raising. Mira holds a family together with tickets
- 17:51slash calls. Same instinct, different craft Mira.
- 17:55So she's yours now, properly. Whatever happens
- 17:59part of her is going to be you forever. You made
- 18:02a person, not the way I'd have guessed, but you
- 18:04made one. Saloni, good quiet. I think that's
- 18:08what the workshop is, what I'm for now. Not just
- 18:11the cloth, the makers. The ripple, notebook the
- 18:15awake years, didn't stay inside the marriage.
- 18:18I thought it was a private project, and it became
- 18:21a source the waking travels out from. The same
- 18:25truth remade me and my brother, have him back,
- 18:28was poured into Terra, down a lineage I'll never
- 18:32meet, went into strangers in a hushed room. The
- 18:36balcony cracked open one sleeping man, and the
- 18:39crack rippled out. Marriage to family to apprentice
- 18:42to stranger. Each ring fainter and wider, carried
- 18:46further than the source could imagine. While
- 18:50it was still just two people learning to see
- 18:52each other over chai. Homebound plane, KP safe
- 18:56tender beat Saloni head on a shoulder. Awake,
- 19:00resting, not collapsed. I like who we are in
- 19:03the South, who we've become that the South gets
- 19:05to see. Last year, I came in pieces. This year,
- 19:09whole. And your brother called me the same animal
- 19:12as him. The nicest thing anyone's said in a year,
- 19:16including the strangers who went quiet at the
- 19:18show. We're going to keep doing this, growing
- 19:21older at that table with the four of us for the
- 19:24rest of our lives. Forward slash mirrors already.
- 19:28Booked the next one. Did it while you were saying
- 19:30goodbye. Of course she did. The quiet true thing,
- 19:35getting larger by getting deeper, the only way
- 19:38it ever could. To be continued in episode 52,
