- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 25th of
- 0:16March and I'm delighted to have your company.
- 0:19Thanks for tapping on play, inviting me in.
- 0:22You might be all on your lonesome saying come on Sean,
- 0:25let's read together. Oh, there might be a few of you,
- 0:27might be a family gathered around a table or tucked into a
- 0:30bed. However you roll at your place,
- 0:33wherever you are. Great to have your company as we
- 0:36continue to be a family on the wall.
- 0:39No, that's not even true. We continue to be a disciple
- 0:43with our Lord speaking to us and walking with us and just getting
- 0:49to be a part of those amazing moments when Jesus ministry was
- 0:53being lived out. And today's reading is no
- 0:56different. This is this wonderful discourse
- 0:58that he has with the Samaritan woman by the well.
- 1:01And this is one of those conversations that will just
- 1:03stay with you all day. Well, that's my hope and that
- 1:07you will just reflect on how Jesus is and his gentleness and
- 1:12the way he go about convicting people of his truth.
- 1:15Ah, how wonderful. Let's read it together, shall
- 1:18we? Reading together, John chapter
- 1:204. Jesus knew the Pharisees had
- 1:33heard that he was baptising and making more disciples than John.
- 1:37So Jesus himself didn't baptise them, His disciples did.
- 1:41So he left you, dear, and returned to Galilee.
- 1:45He had to go through Sumeria on the way.
- 1:48Eventually he came to the Sumerian village of Sikka, near
- 1:52the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
- 1:56Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired from the long walk,
- 2:00sat wearily beside the well about noontime.
- 2:05Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to
- 2:08her, Please give me a drink. He was alone at the time because
- 2:13his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.
- 2:16The woman was surprised, for Jews refused to have anything to
- 2:20do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, You are a Jew
- 2:26and I am a Samaritan woman, why are you asking me for a drink?
- 2:31Jesus replied, If you only knew the gift God has for you and who
- 2:37you were speaking to, you would ask me and I would give you
- 2:41living water. But Sir, you don't have a rope
- 2:45or a bucket, she said. And this well is very deep.
- 2:51Where would you get this living water?
- 2:54And besides, do you think you're greater than our ancestor Jacob,
- 2:58who gave us this well? How can you offer better water
- 3:02than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?
- 3:06Jesus replied. Anyone who drinks this water
- 3:09will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I
- 3:14give will never be thirsty again.
- 3:17It becomes a fresh bubbling spring within them, giving them
- 3:22eternal life. Please, Sir, the woman said,
- 3:26Give me this water. Then I'll never be thirsty again
- 3:30and I won't have to come here to get water.
- 3:34Go and get your husband, Jesus told her.
- 3:37I don't have a husband, the woman replied.
- 3:41Jesus said you're right, you don't have a husband, for you
- 3:45have had five husbands and you aren't even married to the man
- 3:49you're living with now. You certainly spoke the truth,
- 3:53Sir, the woman said. You must be a prophet.
- 3:58So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is
- 4:03the only place to worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here
- 4:08at Mount Gerizim where our ancestors worshipped?
- 4:12Jesus replied. Believe me a dear woman, the
- 4:15time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you
- 4:18worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.
- 4:22You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while
- 4:26we Jews know all about Him. For salvation comes through the
- 4:30Jews. But the time is coming.
- 4:33Indeed, it's here now when true worshippers will worship the
- 4:37Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those
- 4:42who will worship Him that way. For God is spirit, so those who
- 4:48worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.
- 4:52The woman said I know the Messiah is coming, the one who
- 4:56is called Christ, When he comes he will explain everything to
- 5:01us. Then Jesus told her I am the
- 5:06Messiah. Just then his disciples came
- 5:09back. They were shocked to find him
- 5:12talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask what
- 5:16do you want with her or why are you talking to her.
- 5:20The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to
- 5:23the village, telling everyone. Come and see a man who told me
- 5:28everything I ever did. Could he possibly be the
- 5:31Messiah? So the people came streaming
- 5:34from the village to see him. Meanwhile, the disciples were
- 5:38urging Jesus. Rabbi, eat something.
- 5:42But Jesus replied, I have a kind of food you know nothing about.
- 5:48Did someone bring him food while we were gone?
- 5:51The disciples asked each other. Then Jesus explained my
- 5:56nourishment comes from doing the will of God who sent me and from
- 6:00finishing his work. You know the saying, four months
- 6:04between planting and harvest. But I say wake up and look
- 6:09around. The fields are already ripe for
- 6:12harvest. The harvesters are paid good
- 6:15wages and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal
- 6:20life. What joy awaits both the planter
- 6:24and the harvester alike. You know the saying one plants
- 6:28and another harvests. And it's true.
- 6:32I sent you to harvest where you didn't plant.
- 6:35Others had already done the work and now you will get to gather
- 6:39the harvest. Many Samaritans from the village
- 6:44believed in Jesus because the woman had said, He told me
- 6:48everything I ever did. When they came out to see him,
- 6:52they begged him to stay in their village.
- 6:55So we stayed for two days, long enough for many more to hear his
- 6:59message and believe. Then they said to the woman, Now
- 7:04we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we
- 7:09have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed
- 7:13the Saviour of the world. At the end of the two days,
- 7:19Jesus went on to Galilee. He himself had said that a
- 7:23prophet is not honoured in his own hometown.
- 7:27Yet the Galileans welcomed him, for they had been in Jerusalem
- 7:32at the Passover celebration and had seen everything he did
- 7:35there. As he travelled through Galilee,
- 7:39he came to Cana, but he had turned the water into wine.
- 7:43There was a government official in nearby Katpernaum whose son
- 7:47was very sick. When he heard that Jesus had
- 7:50come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Jesus to come to
- 7:55Capernaum to heal his son who was about to die.
- 7:59Jesus asked. Will you never believe in me
- 8:03unless you see miraculous signs and wonders?
- 8:06The official pleaded. Lord, please come now before my
- 8:10little boy dies. Then Jesus told him, Go back
- 8:15home. Your son will live.
- 8:18And the man believed what Jesus said and started home.
- 8:23While the man was on his way, some of his servants met him
- 8:26with the news that his son was alive and well.
- 8:29He asked them when the boy had begun to get better, and they
- 8:32replied. Yesterday afternoon at 1:00 his
- 8:36fever suddenly disappeared. Then the father realised that
- 8:40that was the very time Jesus had told him.
- 8:44Your son will live and he and his entire household believed in
- 8:49Jesus. This was the second miraculous
- 8:53sign Jesus did in Galilee after coming from Judea.
- 8:56Oh Jesus, you truly are the gift
- 9:09that keeps on giving. Oh, you say here as you're
- 9:13speaking to the Samaritan woman, that you give us this gift of
- 9:18living water. Living water that we don't just
- 9:21drink once, but that with you, your presence, and your Spirit,
- 9:25it becomes within us a bubbling spring that will continue to
- 9:31overflow all the way through to eternal life.
- 9:36Jesus, thank you that you give us your spirit.
- 9:39Thank you that you are a God of abundance.
- 9:42Not just merely enough to scrape by, but Your love, Your grace,
- 9:46Your presence is more than what we could ever need or desire.
- 9:51And here you are, loving us, leading us day by day, providing
- 9:58for us. Thank You Jesus, for giving us
- 10:01Your spirit. Thank You for residing in us in
- 10:04this powerful, palpable, daily growing living way.
- 10:11Our Lord, make us keenly aware of Your presence in us, in our
- 10:15lives. Every step that we take today.
- 10:21Thank You that we are never alone, but we have you in us,
- 10:25with us, through us, around us. Lord, may we live our lives in
- 10:30You. And we pray all of this in your
- 10:33incredibly present name, Jesus, Amen.
