- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So today we are talking about our crazy ability to be able to
- 0:37look at other people and see what's wrong with them and not
- 0:41necessarily see that in ourselves because you're all
- 0:44laughing right now and I know you are because it's all true.
- 0:47We can always look at other people and we can always see
- 0:49what's wrong with them, but we rarely look at ourselves with
- 0:52the same, you know, finite glass and say, well, what is wrong
- 0:57with me as much as there is with other people.
- 1:00And we always look outside of ourselves for solutions rather
- 1:04than looking inside of ourselves to say, OK, I really need to
- 1:07look at myself instead of them or only them and trying to
- 1:10figure it out. So let's take one of our most
- 1:14important relationships that we have, which is with our family.
- 1:18And it doesn't matter how your family's made-up, doesn't matter
- 1:21what the composure or no composition of it is.
- 1:25It matters that you're looking at it and you're saying to
- 1:29yourself, OK, I can look at myself and I can see my role in
- 1:34this, in this layout of my family.
- 1:37And I can see everything that's wrong with them.
- 1:39I can see how they do all these things wrong.
- 1:41I can see how they answer me. I can see their actions.
- 1:43I can see everything that's wrong with them, but am I
- 1:46including myself in this critical analysis that I'm
- 1:49putting forward? Am I giving an honest opinion of
- 1:53myself outside of my critical eye for them?
- 1:57And the answer is a hard no. I already know that that's a
- 2:00hard no because that's the human nature that we live with.
- 2:03Each and every one of us is to look outside of ourselves for
- 2:06the problems before we look at ourselves for the problems.
- 2:09I myself do this. I can look at things and I can
- 2:12tell you everything that's wrong with my husband and my kids and
- 2:18how they're the cause of the issues as opposed to me.
- 2:21And maybe how I'm communicating things with them or how I'm
- 2:24describing things to them or my expectations of them, or how the
- 2:31expectations might just be absolutely unreasonable because
- 2:34no one is going to be as organized as I am in these
- 2:38situations. Or do it the way that I, I do it
- 2:40just because it's my way. And if it's not my way, then it
- 2:44must be the wrong way. Well, that was probably one of
- 2:47the hardest lessons I ever had to learn was that my way was not
- 2:50the only way to do something. And I think that when you can
- 2:55stop and you can pause, especially if you are willing to
- 2:59do this with your family, and then you can expand out, you
- 3:02know, you have concentric circles of how life life works
- 3:05and you can work yourself out and say, OK, well, what about my
- 3:08Co workers or people I lead or people that I have an effect on
- 3:12in my life? If you can start to work
- 3:14concentrically out from the core, then you get better and
- 3:17better and better as it goes and you can start to see how you
- 3:20affect other people. So profoundly, and you can start
- 3:25to see how you can look at yourself and say, OK, well,
- 3:28clearly I'm interacting in this in a way that's making this
- 3:33difficult for the other person as well.
- 3:35And if we really want to clean ourselves up, if we really want
- 3:38to clean the situation completely up and we want to
- 3:41make it so that we can hit new levels of greatness.
- 3:45Now you're all going to hear my little dog barking this morning
- 3:48because she's out here with me. You'll start to recognize that
- 3:52as you start to clean this up within yourself, you can start
- 3:56to see shifts in other people. Because it's impossible.
- 4:00And I'm really using that word truly meaning it.
- 4:03I'm not doing it just as a cliche.
- 4:05It is impossible for something to remain the same when a factor
- 4:09in the equation changes. It's the butterfly effect.
- 4:11So when something changes, even if it's a minute amount,
- 4:15something else has to change. And that is across the board.
- 4:18So when someone will say to me, OK, I'm willing to do this.
- 4:22And then there's a shift, they'll see a little shift in
- 4:24their partner or their Co workers or whatever and it will
- 4:28last for a period of time and they'll say, well, we're right
- 4:30back to where we used to be and I will check in.
- 4:32And I'll say, well, are you remaining consistent with how
- 4:34you changed? And there's inevitably the pause
- 4:37and they go maybe not. And I say, OK, so you slipped
- 4:41back into an old behaviour and they say probably, but because
- 4:47they weren't monitoring it, because they weren't critically
- 4:49on it, they could not discern if that was really what was
- 4:53happening in the moment. And they just slipped back into
- 4:55the behaviour. And so we went right back down
- 4:57the rabbit hole again. And as I always like to say, not
- 5:00only did you go down the rabbit hole, but you ended up seeing
- 5:02Alice and having tea with the rabbit and enjoying your time
- 5:07down in Wonderland and you didn't even realize it.
- 5:10So what's so important is that you're willing to measure
- 5:14success and failures over and over and over.
- 5:18This is another Mr. Miyagi moment from The Karate Kid.
- 5:21Wax on, wax off. You have got to be willing to do
- 5:24it over and over and over. And This is why I say you've got
- 5:28to track yourself and say, OK, what today?
- 5:32What were my wins? Where could I have been better?
- 5:35What can I do better tomorrow? And for most of us, that is to
- 5:39be very on track with monitoring our own behaviour, our own
- 5:43language, our own reactions, our own focus.
- 5:47Because when we do that, everything else change.
- 5:49Because I know you've heard me say this before and I sound like
- 5:52a broken record, but change is an inside job.
- 5:54And when you change yourself, everything else around you
- 5:56changes. So I'm going to challenge you to
- 6:00look at this and say, you know, am I willing to look at myself
- 6:03as critically as I am other people?
- 6:07And if you do that, even if you just start off today and you
- 6:09start to recognize how you showed up and you're, you know,
- 6:12point blank honest with yourself and you say, you know, all
- 6:16right, I was a complete Jackass today.
- 6:18I've had those days and not long ago where I was just a complete
- 6:21Jackass because maybe I didn't get enough sleep or maybe I
- 6:24wasn't hydrated enough or whatever.
- 6:26There's no reason. And I can come up with a million
- 6:29excuses, but the truth is I was dreadful and I needed to fix it.
- 6:32So start there, start with yourself, start looking at
- 6:36yourself and start asking the questions and I promise you we
- 6:39get some fascinating answers and you'll work yourself through it.
- 6:42So I hope you guys have a very blessed day discovering
- 6:44yourselves and love yourself anyway because guess what, this
- 6:47is a part of being human. This is who we are.
- 6:50So I will see you tomorrow and I hope you have a wonderful day.
- 6:54Bye.
