- 1:01Speaker 1: How you doing this week?
- 1:03Speaker 2: I'm doing great. Thank you.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It's so good to talk to you. And we're going
- 1:06Speaker 1: to talk this week about preparing and things to you know,
- 1:09Speaker 1: be ready for when it comes to a visit to
- 1:12Speaker 1: the veterinarian. And of course first visit there's probably a
- 1:15Speaker 1: lot of anxiety, a lot of things as new pet owners,
- 1:18Speaker 1: like oh my goodness, what do I need? And those
- 1:20Speaker 1: type of things, but also kind of follow up visits
- 1:23Speaker 1: as well, and before we get to some of the
- 1:24Speaker 1: questions that we may want to ask and things we
- 1:27Speaker 1: want to go over with our vet. I know, one
- 1:29Speaker 1: of the big things, and we've been talking about this now,
- 1:31Speaker 1: that checkout vet. You're seven days a week from nine
- 1:34Speaker 1: am until five pm. You've got a complete staff of
- 1:37Speaker 1: doctors and a great team around them, and a great
- 1:40Speaker 1: team at checkout Veterinary. I know. One of the things
- 1:44Speaker 1: that really good vets and really good folks are good
- 1:47Speaker 1: at asking questions, and as a vet, that's part of
- 1:51Speaker 1: you know, a big part of your job is asking
- 1:53Speaker 1: those type of questions.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Isn't it. Yes, Yeah, we want to get a lot
- 1:57Speaker 2: of good information, whether you've seen us, for whether you're
- 2:00Speaker 2: new to us. We typically take a pretty complete history
- 2:03Speaker 2: because it's really important to myself and my doctors that
- 2:06Speaker 2: we develop a plan based on your pet's lifestyle. So
- 2:10Speaker 2: not every pet gets the same vaccine recommendations, the same
- 2:14Speaker 2: heartworm and plan tick recommendations, the same recommendations for spaying
- 2:18Speaker 2: and neutering. We really customize everything so we don't have
- 2:21Speaker 2: a corporate approach to everybody gets this done the same way.
- 2:25Speaker 2: We customize it based on does your cat you know,
- 2:28Speaker 2: visit with friends, does your dog go to the dog park,
- 2:32Speaker 2: do you go to the groom or do do you
- 2:34Speaker 2: travel with your pet? Where do you travel to, do
- 2:36Speaker 2: you leave the state? What do we need for preventives,
- 2:39Speaker 2: what do we need for vaccines? So we're really pretty
- 2:42Speaker 2: specific about that. And even spaining and utering to us
- 2:45Speaker 2: is a really important decision. It's not just everybody gets
- 2:48Speaker 2: it done at six months of age. We look at
- 2:50Speaker 2: the breed, we look at the lifestyle, we look at
- 2:52Speaker 2: a lot of different factors, and we can make better
- 2:55Speaker 2: decisions because we know delaying spang and utering for a
- 2:58Speaker 2: lot of pets has a health benefit in spite of
- 3:00Speaker 2: what you've historically been told. So keep in mind that
- 3:03Speaker 2: we're going to ask you a lot of questions and
- 3:05Speaker 2: that does mean it takes a few extra minutes. But
- 3:08Speaker 2: we don't want you to feel like we do cookie
- 3:09Speaker 2: cutter medicine. We want you to feel that we're doing
- 3:12Speaker 2: a different approach for everybody.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Is there is there a little education that goes on
- 3:16Speaker 1: as well as you mentioned some of some of this
- 3:18Speaker 1: traditional you know, thinking as far as spay and neutering,
- 3:21Speaker 1: for example, when that should be done. I think for
- 3:23Speaker 1: a lot of people when they hear that, they go
- 3:25Speaker 1: wait what and then and kind of explaining why why
- 3:28Speaker 1: some of the some of the guidances has changed on
- 3:31Speaker 1: that stuff.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely, there's a lot of things that have changed
- 3:36Speaker 2: with spaying and utering. If you have a golden retriever,
- 3:39Speaker 2: I'm going to make a completely different different recommendation than
- 3:41Speaker 2: if you have a schnauzer. So I think that education
- 3:45Speaker 2: of the client is important. There's great material, it's out
- 3:47Speaker 2: there on the internet. We have a good bit of
- 3:49Speaker 2: information on our website at Veterinary Village that goes through
- 3:53Speaker 2: the Spain neuter controversy. It links you to a number
- 3:56Speaker 2: of articles and some videos from people way smarter than
- 3:59Speaker 2: me that connect explain the differences. But if you do
- 4:01Speaker 2: a little bit of reading, there's Facebook pages for the
- 4:04Speaker 2: over sparing spay. I mean, whoever knew. So if you
- 4:07Speaker 2: do a little bit of reading and you're interested in
- 4:10Speaker 2: those health benefits of delaying the spaying and utering. Of course,
- 4:13Speaker 2: the reason we spay neuter is to prevent pregnancy, and
- 4:16Speaker 2: because Americans typically are not good at managing their pets
- 4:20Speaker 2: sexual behaviors when we're kind of we've become dependent on
- 4:24Speaker 2: that since the seventies as the way we handle our pets.
- 4:28Speaker 2: But if you're really keeping up to date with the literature,
- 4:31Speaker 2: and you're maybe in the healthcare field, or you're just
- 4:35Speaker 2: you're doing competitions with your dog, or you know, you're
- 4:38Speaker 2: doing performance work with your dog, and you really want
- 4:40Speaker 2: to make sure their joints stay healthy, that their body
- 4:42Speaker 2: condition stays good, that a lot of benefits can be
- 4:45Speaker 2: benefited can come from this. We know golden retrievers are
- 4:49Speaker 2: four times more likely to tear accruciate if they are
- 4:52Speaker 2: spade or neutered. Young and a cruciate rupture. Oftentimes, if
- 4:56Speaker 2: it happens in one leg, it follows within six to
- 4:58Speaker 2: twelve months in the opposite leg. So you may now
- 5:01Speaker 2: have a five to ten thousand dollars procedure looming at
- 5:04Speaker 2: you because you did a spey or nuter on your
- 5:07Speaker 2: golden retrurier when she was six months old or your
- 5:09Speaker 2: lab when he was you know, five months old, or
- 5:11Speaker 2: whatever it happens to be. But there's increasing numbers of
- 5:14Speaker 2: articles in the literature that are published published for veterinarians
- 5:17Speaker 2: but also for clients. So if somebody wants to have
- 5:20Speaker 2: a conversation with us, by all means, make that appointment.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Come on in, let's talk to the doctors about it.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Let's see what makes sense for your lifestyle, and then
- 5:28Speaker 2: move from there, because we don't do everybody fits the
- 5:32Speaker 2: same mold kind of medicine.
- 5:34Speaker 1: That's a great thing with check out VET and getting
- 5:35Speaker 1: to know the doctors, it's a great day to start
- 5:38Speaker 1: that relationship. I can just pick up phone game a
- 5:39Speaker 1: call six soh eight three one eight sixty seven hundred.
- 5:42Speaker 1: That's six soh eight three one eight sixty seven hundred.
- 5:45Speaker 1: You can learn more online the website checkout vet dot com.
- 5:48Speaker 1: That's checkout vet dot com and talk about, you know,
- 5:51Speaker 1: questions to be asking your VET and things to bring
- 5:55Speaker 1: up during those appointments. Something I've always wondered is for
- 5:58Speaker 1: for people we've got like APA in those e mrs EMR,
- 6:02Speaker 1: I think is what they're the medical electronic medical records
- 6:04Speaker 1: that would make sense? Is there anything like that? Is
- 6:07Speaker 1: there like a parallel with pets or like if you
- 6:09Speaker 1: are let's say you know your your current VET as
- 6:13Speaker 1: retired or for some reason you're deciding you're gonna you're
- 6:16Speaker 1: going to make the change, are those records accessible at
- 6:20Speaker 1: your new VET or should you get a copy of those?
- 6:22Speaker 1: How does that? How does that process work?
- 6:25Speaker 2: Doctor? Yeah, we don't share records with other veterinary clinics.
- 6:28Speaker 2: We don't have anything nearly as robust as EPIC. I mean,
- 6:31Speaker 2: you know, most of the country doesn't know what EPIC
- 6:33Speaker 2: is and does. But because we're in the medicine area,
- 6:36Speaker 2: we're all pretty aware of how robust and how important
- 6:39Speaker 2: they are to insurance companies to our medical records, my chart.
- 6:44Speaker 2: You know, we've become really dependent on that as customers. Now,
- 6:46Speaker 2: we do have portals that allow you to go into
- 6:49Speaker 2: your pets record and see when their vaccines are due.
- 6:51Speaker 2: We do have a way to do your medication online
- 6:54Speaker 2: refills so that you can order from our online store
- 6:56Speaker 2: and they ship to you. So we have some of
- 6:58Speaker 2: those pieces, but if you're leaving one veterinary clinic and
- 7:01Speaker 2: going to another, you do need to get those records,
- 7:03Speaker 2: at least the vaccine history and the high points of
- 7:05Speaker 2: what kind of medical conditions that they've had, and then
- 7:08Speaker 2: we can put those into our records. We've actually started
- 7:10Speaker 2: using AI for our record keeping and for transcribing information
- 7:16Speaker 2: from the exam rooms. And what that does then is
- 7:18Speaker 2: we can take somebody's medical records. Say you have, and
- 7:21Speaker 2: I see this frequently, two hundred and thirty pages of
- 7:23Speaker 2: medical records from another clinic. That's like, oh, my goodness sakes,
- 7:27Speaker 2: what am I going to do with this as a
- 7:28Speaker 2: veterinarian before you come in the door. Well, our AI
- 7:32Speaker 2: can take that and summarize it all into a page
- 7:35Speaker 2: or two so that we don't have to pile through
- 7:36Speaker 2: two hundred and thirty pages to understand what your pets
- 7:39Speaker 2: need to have been And if you get those to
- 7:42Speaker 2: us ahead of time, that gives our AI a chance
- 7:44Speaker 2: to do that. So I think that is a really
- 7:45Speaker 2: important piece of information. And if you know your pet's
- 7:49Speaker 2: historically been anxious, nervous, maybe scratches or bites or something
- 7:54Speaker 2: at a veterinary clinic visit, because sometimes they do. And
- 7:57Speaker 2: one of the advantages to ours is that it is
- 7:59Speaker 2: a little bit less likely to create that because it's
- 8:01Speaker 2: a less intense situation. It's less stressful for your pets
- 8:04Speaker 2: and for you. If you let us know ahead of time,
- 8:06Speaker 2: we can get your pet, like your cat can be
- 8:08Speaker 2: on GABA pet and your dog can be on tresidone,
- 8:11Speaker 2: so when they come in as they've historically done that before,
- 8:14Speaker 2: we can do that. And it can just make your
- 8:17Speaker 2: whole visit a different experience, bringing them in on those
- 8:20Speaker 2: medications so that they're more at ease, more relaxed. Oh
- 8:23Speaker 2: my gosh, you know, I don't want to have to
- 8:25Speaker 2: fight with your dog to draw blood sample or do
- 8:28Speaker 2: a n ail trim or any of those things. I
- 8:29Speaker 2: think it's really important that we give our pets every
- 8:32Speaker 2: opportunity to have a pleasant experience. So the design of
- 8:35Speaker 2: the clinic, the way we handle them, the treats that
- 8:38Speaker 2: we give, the medications we can give ahead of time.
- 8:40Speaker 2: All of those things completely an important role in your
- 8:44Speaker 2: ability to be comfortable and relaxed and therefore your pets
- 8:47Speaker 2: at that visit.
- 8:48Speaker 1: One of the things that I don't know that I
- 8:49Speaker 1: mentioned enough, and I for folks that have been over
- 8:51Speaker 1: to check out vet dot com they're aware of that
- 8:54Speaker 1: fear free certification. And as we talk about with your
- 8:58Speaker 1: pets and making sure that not only is it good
- 9:01Speaker 1: to keep them comfortable, I've got to guess it's also
- 9:03Speaker 1: good to really do a thorough exam when you're not
- 9:07Speaker 1: fighting with it with about getting that stuff done. Doctors.
- 9:10Speaker 1: We talked this week with doctor Mardy Greer of Checkout Veterinary,
- 9:13Speaker 1: the website checkout vet dot com talk about things kind
- 9:16Speaker 1: of getting a little bit of a breakdown of questions
- 9:18Speaker 1: to be asking your fat obviously, and this is also
- 9:22Speaker 1: appropriate a human question as well, which is how's the
- 9:25Speaker 1: way oh, weight plays a huge role, doesn't it in
- 9:28Speaker 1: an overall health of any animal, including your pets?
- 9:32Speaker 2: It does, and so weight management is important and that
- 9:35Speaker 2: is something that we're willing to discuss with people. Now.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Some clients are a little offended, and we're not trying
- 9:39Speaker 2: to hurt anybody's feelings, but from a health perspective, it's
- 9:43Speaker 2: important that we do discuss that. We talk about what
- 9:45Speaker 2: food your pet is on. So before you come to
- 9:47Speaker 2: your vet clinic appointment, look at the bag of food.
- 9:50Speaker 2: I can't tell you how many people come in and say, yeah,
- 9:52Speaker 2: I get it, I get it at mounds and it's
- 9:56Speaker 2: a green bag. Okay, that doesn't help us a whole bunch.
- 9:59Speaker 2: So look at the maybe take a picture of it.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Tell us what treats your feeding because those are important things.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Look to see what you have left at home for
- 10:06Speaker 2: heartworm preventive and flee in tich medications. You should have
- 10:09Speaker 2: none from previous years, but you know, sometimes they just
- 10:13Speaker 2: put it in the back of the cupboard and you
- 10:14Speaker 2: forget about it. So if you have two doses left,
- 10:17Speaker 2: let us know so that we can send the right
- 10:18Speaker 2: number of doses with you at your next visit. So
- 10:22Speaker 2: all those things are really important. When we have people
- 10:24Speaker 2: that come in and we ask what they're pet is eating,
- 10:27Speaker 2: the kids always know. The children always know the name
- 10:30Speaker 2: of the food. The parents are like, I don't know.
- 10:33Speaker 2: So it's really pretty funny. So bring the kids along.
- 10:36Speaker 2: We're happy to have them it's a family event. We
- 10:39Speaker 2: are happy to have the kids coming in because we've
- 10:41Speaker 2: got plenty of room with the garage bays, and with
- 10:43Speaker 2: the way it's set up, it's very comfortable. The kids
- 10:46Speaker 2: can stay in the car, they can watch their videos
- 10:48Speaker 2: in the car, they can work on their homework, they
- 10:50Speaker 2: can run around the garage bay. You know, we're very
- 10:52Speaker 2: happy to have children there as well, because we are
- 10:54Speaker 2: a family friendly practice. We have a couple of doctors
- 10:58Speaker 2: that have new infants in their lives, so we like
- 11:01Speaker 2: that kind of family approach.
- 11:03Speaker 1: That is great, and of course you think about our
- 11:05Speaker 1: pets and what an important part of the family they
- 11:07Speaker 1: are and getting the kiddo's and the whole family involved.
- 11:10Speaker 1: What a great what a great concept. You mentioned two
- 11:12Speaker 1: real quick doctor heartworm flee and tick. And for like
- 11:16Speaker 1: a lot of these medications, people sometimes think, oh, I'll
- 11:19Speaker 1: just order online. I know from a couple of programs
- 11:22Speaker 1: ago you had mentioned getting those prescriptions, getting those medications
- 11:27Speaker 1: through your vet at like checkout vet Prime example of this.
- 11:30Speaker 1: It's actually you can actually save money doing it that way.
- 11:33Speaker 1: I think a lot of people are surprised to learn that, yes.
- 11:36Speaker 2: The companies provide us with rebates depending on how many
- 11:39Speaker 2: of each of those products you purchase. Then more you purchase,
- 11:42Speaker 2: of course, the bigger the rebate. And you can get
- 11:44Speaker 2: rebates from us that you can't get if you order
- 11:47Speaker 2: online from other services. Plus, we now have your pets
- 11:51Speaker 2: entire medical record in front of us, and we can say, oh,
- 11:53Speaker 2: this medication goes with this one, but it doesn't go
- 11:55Speaker 2: with that one. So we don't have a pharmacy that
- 11:58Speaker 2: oversees that. The way if you go to Walgrains or
- 12:00Speaker 2: Walmart or whatever, you've got a pharmacy that's got all
- 12:03Speaker 2: your drugs listed. But if you're peace mailing it because
- 12:05Speaker 2: you're getting some from here and some from there, we
- 12:08Speaker 2: may have pets that are on medications that they don't
- 12:10Speaker 2: need to be on if it don't play nice together.
- 12:12Speaker 2: So very important that we see that whole comprehensive medical
- 12:15Speaker 2: record and can be sure that all your meds are
- 12:18Speaker 2: suitable and compatible, and that they're the right size dose.
- 12:21Speaker 2: That we've weighed your pet and make sure that if
- 12:24Speaker 2: they're that forty four pound dog versus the forty five
- 12:26Speaker 2: pound dog, there's a break on medications right at that
- 12:29Speaker 2: weight range. So important that we know exactly what's going
- 12:33Speaker 2: on with your pet when we prescribe.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Dog this morning with doctor Murdy Greer of Checkout Veterinary.
- 12:37Speaker 1: The website checkout vet dot com. That's checkout vet dot com.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Well you have a chance and get a chance and
- 12:42Speaker 1: take the opportunity to other stop on in learn more online.
- 12:45Speaker 1: They'd love to see you as well at Checkout Veterinary
- 12:48Speaker 1: twenty seven to ten Prairie Lakes Drive. They'd love to
- 12:50Speaker 1: see your pet as well. Don't forget that first visit
- 12:53Speaker 1: that exam. It is free against great data. Start that
- 12:56Speaker 1: relationship at checkout vet. All the details online checkout vet
- 12:59Speaker 1: dot com. Pick a phone, give a call six so
- 13:01Speaker 1: eight three one eight sixty seven hundred. That's three one
- 13:04Speaker 1: eight sixty seven hundred. Doctor. I know if if somebody's
- 13:07Speaker 1: got you know, maybe they got a dog from the pound,
- 13:10Speaker 1: or maybe they've got a dog where they know they
- 13:13Speaker 1: know specifically what type of breed it is. I know
- 13:15Speaker 1: things like DNA testing can be helpful for those dogs
- 13:18Speaker 1: that you may have a question mark about. But is
- 13:20Speaker 1: that also something as far as that that conversation with
- 13:22Speaker 1: your vet. Obviously, as you were talking earlier about about
- 13:25Speaker 1: different breeds, specifically with dogs, for example, having different needs.
- 13:29Speaker 1: You really want to talk about breed specific things that
- 13:32Speaker 1: folks dizzy, common diseases, and other things based on a
- 13:35Speaker 1: pet's breed or a pet's age. Those are important conversations
- 13:38Speaker 1: they have as well, aren't they.
- 13:40Speaker 2: They are. So if you have that DNA profile that
- 13:42Speaker 2: you've done from when you purchase the dog, or you
- 13:46Speaker 2: you know you got it for a Christmas present, or
- 13:48Speaker 2: the breeder that you purchased the dog from has already
- 13:50Speaker 2: done it on either your puppy or the parents of
- 13:52Speaker 2: that puppy, if you can share that information with us,
- 13:55Speaker 2: it's again really valuable. Some of the panels now help
- 13:58Speaker 2: to have up to three hundred and fifty DNA tests
- 14:01Speaker 2: on them and that can help us direct your pets needs.
- 14:05Speaker 2: It tells us a lot about traits, It tells us,
- 14:07Speaker 2: of course about breed, it tells us about parentage. So
- 14:10Speaker 2: there's a lot of value in DNA and the more
- 14:12Speaker 2: information we have about your pets, the more accurately we
- 14:15Speaker 2: can medically manage them. If we know you have a
- 14:18Speaker 2: dog that's prone to bladderstones, we're going to you know,
- 14:21Speaker 2: get ahead of that. If you know your dog has
- 14:24Speaker 2: a history of the parents maybe didn't have great hips.
- 14:26Speaker 2: We're going to be monitoring those things, and new medications
- 14:29Speaker 2: are on the market. I just went to another meeting
- 14:31Speaker 2: last night about Librella and celensia, the arthritis injections that
- 14:35Speaker 2: we have for dogs and cats. There's some really amazing
- 14:38Speaker 2: things that we can do for your pets. So be
- 14:41Speaker 2: sure that you're sharing everything that you have with us.
- 14:43Speaker 2: If you have X rays from an emergency clinic, or
- 14:45Speaker 2: you have any information, all the medical records can be
- 14:48Speaker 2: put into your file electronically and then we, like I
- 14:51Speaker 2: said before, can with AI consolidate all those down into
- 14:54Speaker 2: a nice, neat little package so that we've got a
- 14:57Speaker 2: medical problem list. If you've you know, if you've been
- 15:00Speaker 2: you moved to Madison because you're a student or because
- 15:02Speaker 2: you've got a job here, and you have records from
- 15:06Speaker 2: where you did undergrad and then you have records from
- 15:08Speaker 2: when your dog was you know, when you were a kid.
- 15:10Speaker 2: We can put all that together and it's really helpful
- 15:13Speaker 2: for us to have that information just for a more
- 15:16Speaker 2: comprehensive approach to your pet's care.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Do those do those DNA tests and other things, and
- 15:21Speaker 1: obviously knowing about if you know who the the you know,
- 15:24Speaker 1: the lineage of your of your pet as well help
- 15:26Speaker 1: a diet and nutrition. Kind of going back to when
- 15:28Speaker 1: we were talking about that, are there areas like breed
- 15:30Speaker 1: specific things that you want to think about when it
- 15:33Speaker 1: comes to setting a diet for your pet.
- 15:36Speaker 2: There's actually a company that's going to be coming out
- 15:39Speaker 2: with pet food that matches your dog's DNA. It's called
- 15:43Speaker 2: helix Is the company that does the DNA and Bixby
- 15:46Speaker 2: is going to make the food. So there will be
- 15:48Speaker 2: DNA driven breed specific dietary recommendations for pets in the
- 15:54Speaker 2: next probably a year or two. So hang on to
- 15:57Speaker 2: your hats man. This is going to be really very cool,
- 16:00Speaker 2: like really sci fi cool.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Oh that is very very exciting and really that's really
- 16:05Speaker 1: cool to hear as we talk this morning with doctor

- 16:43Speaker 1: our conversation with doctor Marty Greer of checkout Vet. We'll
- 16:45Speaker 1: do that next as Ask the Experts continues right here
- 16:48Speaker 1: on thirteen ten double u ib A. This is Asked

- 17:12Speaker 1: it is a great day to make an appointment at
- 17:14Speaker 1: checkout vet. They're telephone number six oh eight three one
- 17:17Speaker 1: eight sixty seven hundred. That's three one eight sixty seven
- 17:19Speaker 1: hundred telephone number. And all that great information available to
- 17:22Speaker 1: you at checkout vet dot com. Don't forget seven days
- 17:24Speaker 1: a week. They are there for you. They are there
- 17:26Speaker 1: for your pets when you need them, every day of
- 17:28Speaker 1: the week, nine am until five pm. And that first visit,
- 17:31Speaker 1: that exam, it is free. You're not going to beat
- 17:33Speaker 1: that either. Doctor. We're talking this week about about questions
- 17:37Speaker 1: to be asking when you visit with your with your vet.
- 17:40Speaker 1: And I know we started this conversation off talking about
- 17:43Speaker 1: you had mentioned injuries five to ten thousand dollars repair
- 17:48Speaker 1: on on ligament damage and other things like that. Is
- 17:51Speaker 1: pet insurance something that that might be a necessity. Is
- 17:55Speaker 1: that something that that you generally recommend to folks if
- 17:58Speaker 1: it's if it's within their budget.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Pet insurance is really valuable. I have a client who
- 18:04Speaker 2: yesterday she's traveling, was out of state, and her dog
- 18:08Speaker 2: swallowed a dog toy and she ended up at the
- 18:10Speaker 2: emergency clinic having endoscopy done to remove the toy. If
- 18:14Speaker 2: she'd had insurance, it would have been really nice. She
- 18:16Speaker 2: wouldn't have had to say how much is that going
- 18:18Speaker 2: to cost? What do I do with that? The same
- 18:21Speaker 2: with the injuries, the same with cancer, with all kinds
- 18:24Speaker 2: of things. So yes, pet insurance is absolutely recommended. The
- 18:28Speaker 2: challenge is to figure out which company, because there's many
- 18:30Speaker 2: of them out there now and it can be a
- 18:32Speaker 2: little bit tricky to try to figure out which one
- 18:35Speaker 2: you want to go with. So talk to your veterinary clinics,
- 18:37Speaker 2: see who they recommend. Our preferences are going to be nationwide,
- 18:40Speaker 2: Trupanion and Rainwalk, so those are some to take a
- 18:44Speaker 2: look at. I'm not sure quite exactly how they come
- 18:47Speaker 2: up with those names because they don't make a lot
- 18:49Speaker 2: of sense to me. But okay, I mean, I'm you know,
- 18:51Speaker 2: Veterinary Pet Insurance VPI makes sense to me, but whatever,
- 18:55Speaker 2: So there's some good ones out there, so give them
- 18:58Speaker 2: a call. I mean, there's comparison. You can go to
- 19:00Speaker 2: a website and do the comparisons, but give them a
- 19:02Speaker 2: call and talk to them and say, so, I have
- 19:04Speaker 2: this breed and it is this stage, and these are
- 19:07Speaker 2: the concerns I have. Do you cover this? Because there's
- 19:10Speaker 2: going to be certain things that you may have had
- 19:12Speaker 2: a previous pet that had and you're going to want
- 19:14Speaker 2: to know that that's a trigger for you and that
- 19:16Speaker 2: you need to know if that insurance is going to
- 19:19Speaker 2: cover the kinds of things that you're concerned about. So
- 19:22Speaker 2: give them a call, talk to them see how they
- 19:24Speaker 2: handle their claim. True Panion, for instance, will pay the
- 19:26Speaker 2: veterinary clinic before you leave your appointment. Most of the
- 19:29Speaker 2: other ones are out of pocket. You have to pay
- 19:31Speaker 2: for it and then the insurance company reimburses you. One
- 19:34Speaker 2: of our doctors that works one week and a month
- 19:36Speaker 2: for US works for nationwide, so of course he's going
- 19:38Speaker 2: to be a pretty big fan of that. So True
- 19:41Speaker 2: Panion pays on the spot. Rainwalk covers some things that
- 19:45Speaker 2: other companies don't like breeding things. So just depending on
- 19:48Speaker 2: what kind of needs you have, you can really tailor
- 19:51Speaker 2: that insurance. And a lot of people are like, well,
- 19:53Speaker 2: you know, I'll just put fifty dollars a month or
- 19:55Speaker 2: one hundred dollars a month into a savings account, and
- 19:57Speaker 2: then it's something terrible happens to my dog, I've got
- 19:59Speaker 2: that money side. Well, reality is, we rarely do that,
- 20:02Speaker 2: and if something truly catastrophic happens. I've had clients coming
- 20:06Speaker 2: out of emergency clinics with bills of twenty and twenty
- 20:08Speaker 2: five thousand dollars And if you have insurance, you know,
- 20:11Speaker 2: you pay a fraction of that and you don't have
- 20:13Speaker 2: to look at the veterinarian materiarsy in your eyes and
- 20:15Speaker 2: say I think use in Asia might have to be
- 20:17Speaker 2: our conversation here. You can just say, yeah, I got this. Look,
- 20:21Speaker 2: here's my insurance company. Let's go. So, you know, those
- 20:25Speaker 2: are always things that happen when you're in a crisis.
- 20:27Speaker 2: It's never the routine stuff that you're covering. You're not
- 20:29Speaker 2: cover vaccines and HeartWare, mentally and tick. You're covering the
- 20:32Speaker 2: things that are really requiring catastrophic kind of care. Your
- 20:36Speaker 2: dog falls down the stairs, your dog jumps out of
- 20:38Speaker 2: the car window. Terrible things that happen. You need to
- 20:41Speaker 2: be covered and don't ever have to think twice about
- 20:44Speaker 2: the coverage that you have and whether you can afford it.
- 20:46Speaker 2: So just do it. You know, I'm just going to
- 20:48Speaker 2: say that's the safest thing to do.
- 20:50Speaker 1: And one of the great things as we're talking this
- 20:52Speaker 1: morning with doctor Greer, we talk about starting that relationship
- 20:55Speaker 1: and having that conversation with your bed you got questions
- 20:58Speaker 1: about this stuff. That's one of those those great things
- 21:00Speaker 1: when you get into get into check out VET talk
- 21:02Speaker 1: with your veterinarian kind of work through some of this stuff.
- 21:05Speaker 1: They are more than more than happy to talk with
- 21:08Speaker 1: you about these things and really make sure you've got
- 21:10Speaker 1: the best set up for your pet. And as we
- 21:13Speaker 1: talk about financial considerations, doctor, obviously insurance is huge, but
- 21:18Speaker 1: I mean all things, you know, whether it's whether it's
- 21:21Speaker 1: tests or treatments, all that prescription meds, that stuff that's
- 21:25Speaker 1: there is costs associated with that, and I think it's
- 21:28Speaker 1: and I know we're kind of trained as humans, and
- 21:31Speaker 1: I think especially as Americans, and we don't like to
- 21:33Speaker 1: talk about money, but financially costs and those type of things,
- 21:36Speaker 1: asking about cost estimates and other things are really important
- 21:39Speaker 1: conversations to have, aren't they.
- 21:42Speaker 2: They are, and veterinarians are happy to talk to you
- 21:44Speaker 2: about it. We just need to know what your boundaries are.
- 21:48Speaker 2: And if you tell us I can do this or that,
- 21:51Speaker 2: we again try to cover a number of different options
- 21:55Speaker 2: for clients so that it gives you the choices of
- 21:58Speaker 2: I can afford to do this, but I'm not going
- 21:59Speaker 2: to go that way. For instance, if a dog comes
- 22:02Speaker 2: in with something really serious and I say to them, well,
- 22:05Speaker 2: if we do an MRI or a ct scant, is
- 22:07Speaker 2: that going to change your opinion? If we tell you
- 22:10Speaker 2: that your dog has a brain tumor. Would you take
- 22:11Speaker 2: your dog to surgery to remove it? And they say no, Well,
- 22:14Speaker 2: then what's the point of doing the CT or the MRI.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I mean, it doesn't have any real logic to it.
- 22:20Speaker 2: But if it does, I can look at a dog
- 22:23Speaker 2: or a cat an X ray or blood work and say, Okay,
- 22:26Speaker 2: if it's this, it could have a good outcome. And
- 22:28Speaker 2: if it's this, it doesn't have a good outcome. But
- 22:30Speaker 2: if your dog has fluid in its chest, your cat
- 22:32Speaker 2: has flewed in its chest, there's nothing good that comes
- 22:34Speaker 2: of that. So I'm going to universally tell you. I'm
- 22:37Speaker 2: just going to tell you right now that the prognosis
- 22:39Speaker 2: isn't good. But if it comes down to, well, it
- 22:42Speaker 2: could be this or it could be that, and this
- 22:44Speaker 2: is a good disease, and this is not a good disease.
- 22:45Speaker 2: And of course you're going to go forward with those diagnostics.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Do you need to ask your veterinarian, what's the prognosis?
- 22:50Speaker 2: What kind of things are we looking for? How can
- 22:53Speaker 2: you help me? Is there somebody in Wisconsin? If I
- 22:56Speaker 2: go to a referral center, the vet school or one
- 22:58Speaker 2: of the referral centers, can they man this case? Those
- 23:01Speaker 2: are all really important things to ask because many times
- 23:04Speaker 2: that your local veterinarian doesn't have all the options that
- 23:07Speaker 2: a referral center does. So ask if you can go
- 23:09Speaker 2: to a tertiary center that has additional options. If that's
- 23:12Speaker 2: something you a are interested in doing, be have the
- 23:14Speaker 2: money for and see have insurance for. So we have
- 23:17Speaker 2: lots of options. I mean, you've all seen cool things
- 23:20Speaker 2: on TV with an animal planet and things, and veterinary
- 23:23Speaker 2: medicine is very advanced, but every clinic doesn't offer every
- 23:27Speaker 2: single service.
- 23:28Speaker 1: It's a really great data start. As we talk about
- 23:30Speaker 1: having a great conversation with the vet, it's always a
- 23:33Speaker 1: great data start that relationship at checkout Veterinary. Whether you
- 23:36Speaker 1: got a new pet, maybe you're looking for a new
